- 0:21Hello and welcome back to the Retail Podcast.
- 0:23Now. Actually it's not the Retail
- 0:25Podcast. This new show that we're going
- 0:28to be launching with the fantastic World Retail Congress
- 0:31and we'll meet Ian in one second, is a global look, World
- 0:35Retail Signals, where we take a look at the top narrative from
- 0:40retail across the globe, but more from an executive
- 0:43perspective, homing in on what leaders across the world are
- 0:46focusing in on the challenges that they're facing, what's
- 0:49interesting for them. But this is a prelude episode
- 0:52where we take a look behind world we tell Congress itself,
- 0:55which if hopefully, if you know what your tickets, you're gonna
- 0:58get your ticket soon. It's happening in April in
- 1:01Berlin and I'm very fortunate to be joined by my Co host of World
- 1:06Retail Signals, Ian, who is absolutely no stranger to me,
- 1:10dear. And and we'll, we'll get Ian.
- 1:12Why don't you actually, before we sort of dive into World
- 1:15Retail Congress and what you do there, can you just tell us a
- 1:18little bit about yourself? Yeah, sure.
- 1:21Hi, Alex. Great to be here and really
- 1:23looking forward to collaborating with you going forward.
- 1:26So, yes, I'm the founder and chair of the World Retail
- 1:29Congress, but I've prior to that, I've have spent pretty
- 1:34much a lifetime working lifetime in retail, not as a retailer,
- 1:37but as a retail journalist primarily and, and commentator
- 1:42on, on retail based in the UKI was editor of Retail Week in the
- 1:48UK and then looked after a portfolio of conferences and
- 1:52exhibitions, all in the retail space and magazines as they then
- 1:55were printed magazines. And yeah.
- 1:59And, and really from that in the early 2000s developed the idea
- 2:03for the World Retail Congress. Based on what we could see in
- 2:07this was in Retail Week, the, the industry was really
- 2:10internationalising, I guess one of the last big industries to
- 2:13internationalise in a way behind pharmaceutical and automotive.
- 2:16And of course that was really, really interesting to us from a
- 2:20content point of view, but also what, what could that mean?
- 2:22And was their interest in from retailers around the world in
- 2:28being part of something, you know, and could it be a
- 2:30magazine? And where we arrived at was that
- 2:33there really was interesting coming together, meeting at an
- 2:37event. Yes, there's lots of conferences
- 2:39and the number of conferences continue to, to grow in all
- 2:42sorts of sectors and markets. But but people really encouraged
- 2:46us to create a high end event that brought together the
- 2:50affected the leaders. And then we always think when
- 2:52we're bringing together the programme for the Congress each
- 2:55year that we, we think about CEO's primarily because you
- 2:57know, the the people that are leading retail businesses of
- 3:01whatever sector in whatever part of the world.
- 3:03You know, the, the concept was to create an event that I
- 3:06brought them together, but to really focus on each year.
- 3:09What, what are the things that are keeping them awake at night?
- 3:11What, what's, what could they benefit from learning from each
- 3:14other, from experts from around the world and, and people
- 3:18externally outside of the retail industry who have a vested
- 3:21interest in and voice in impacting on and helping shape
- 3:25retailing. So that's, you know, really what
- 3:27we created. And I feel like it's sort of
- 3:30dipped into all those years of experience that went before to
- 3:33bring this, this to life. And here we are, nearly nearly
- 3:3620 years on from when we launched it.
- 3:38Yeah. I mean, that's an incredible
- 3:39origin story. Well, I'm really curious as
- 3:42someone who is experienced in the industry, you've seen it
- 3:47come, you've seen them come, you see them go.
- 3:49What's the one thing that stood out for you over the 20 years in
- 3:53terms of the transforming world of executives within retail?
- 3:57Yeah, it's been quite a 20 years.
- 3:59When we launched in all honesty the impetus was around that
- 4:02internationalisation, you know businesses big and small were
- 4:06and brands were moving cross-border and into markets.
- 4:09But literally within 12 months of launching the Congress, we
- 4:12had the, the big financial crash.
- 4:15And at the same time we had in, you know, various terminology
- 4:20affected what we know as e-commerce was really starting
- 4:22to have its impact. And, and on, on it, on it goes
- 4:25in terms of the, the, the challenges that have faced
- 4:28retail and COVID obviously been the most dramatic.
- 4:31But I think I guess in answer to your question, the thing that
- 4:33strikes me through all of those near 20 years, and if I think
- 4:36back beyond launching the World Retail Congress, that there's an
- 4:39incredible resilience around retail and retailers and
- 4:42retailing. And no matter how big the
- 4:45challenges are. And we're certainly as an
- 4:47industry facing probably some of the most enormous challenges
- 4:50today in terms of on, on several fronts.
- 4:54And yes, you can get really dragged down by the sort of the
- 4:59almost dystopian sense of the what, how big those challenges
- 5:02are. But but it's, it is remarkable,
- 5:05I always feel this, that retailers primary, primary aim
- 5:09is how do we get through this? How do we find a way through
- 5:12this? What does this mean?
- 5:13How can we adapt? What is, you know, how can we
- 5:16get through to the the customer? How do we find a new way?
- 5:18And you know, when I, when I think back, you know, and, and
- 5:22I'm, I don't always like thinking back.
- 5:23It's important to think forward, but it's just really striking to
- 5:26me and I've had so many conversations as we get closer
- 5:29to this year's Congress. And you know, here we are only
- 5:33in month 3 of 2026 and you couldn't quite make it up
- 5:36really. But, but somehow retailers are
- 5:39still battling through to find a way through it and to make
- 5:44things work. And that's, you know, the, the
- 5:48short term geopolitical challenges and economic
- 5:51challenges. And that's without talking about
- 5:53the way the industry is being reshaped by technology.
- 5:56So, and, and that, that for me, I guess in answer to your
- 5:59question, is the my big takeaway.
- 6:01And I, I, I feel, I feel that's even more front of mind for me
- 6:05in listening to the conversations than ever before.
- 6:08It's it's that sense of resilience.
- 6:10Yeah, no, I love it. Resilience is, is, is, is a good
- 6:13one because you, you see that in terms of who survived.
- 6:17I've seen several charts, you know, in terms of who was the
- 6:19top retailer 10 years ago and who is in that top 10 still now
- 6:24and who's dropped out and how they're transforming.
- 6:26You know, a classic example is Walmart.
- 6:28Our Walmart is continued to keep pushing and pushing and adopting
- 6:32technology and optic change. And what's exciting for me and
- 6:35the hence why I don't think that we're, there's a couple of, you
- 6:38know, globally, there's some things happening that there is
- 6:42some negativity, but it's a re pivoting of who's going to be
- 6:46the winners and losers of the future.
- 6:49And one of the biggest themes is AI.
- 6:51Obviously that's going to be just like e-commerce in 20,000
- 6:55is now something like 18 to 20% of your business and and you
- 7:00know it's an interesting look at it a genetic and AI is that next
- 7:05wave in e-commerce yeah bringing it on to the Congress in terms
- 7:09of I mean I Love Actually it's always a delight because it's
- 7:12like oh where is it gonna be this year I've been to Paris,
- 7:14I've been to London I've been to Rome and this year is in Berlin
- 7:18and I don't know what was the thinking why Germany why Berlin
- 7:22not there's anything wrong with it I'm.
- 7:23Not, not at all. We have been in Berlin before,
- 7:27but not since 2011. So that, that was one factor.
- 7:32It's that when, you know, we look at where we know where we
- 7:35haven't been before or where we should return to.
- 7:37So a, that was one factor. And so often we haven't been to
- 7:41Germany since then. And you know, Berlin is, is a
- 7:43fascinating city. I think it's, it stands out
- 7:46because since 2011 it has really built reputation as being a tech
- 7:50hub, one of Europe's or even the world's sort of key tech hubs,
- 7:55which is interesting. The very nature of the city,
- 7:57it's got a dynamism about it and the creativity and emphasis on
- 8:02creativity. And you know, Zolando, of
- 8:04course, famously is born and resides in, in Berlin and other
- 8:08other retail businesses like HelloFresh, you know, they've
- 8:11all come out as that incubator of technology in, in Berlin.
- 8:15And, you know, retail is, you know, quite unique, you know,
- 8:18heavy emphasis on sort of newer, smaller, independent businesses.
- 8:24But that's good. That's all part of the mix.
- 8:25That's where new ideas come from.
- 8:27And, and the thing that is important, it's, you know, it's,
- 8:30you know, accessible, a great city to go to, makes attractive.
- 8:35You know, we have a model, as you suggested that we move every
- 8:38year, which, yeah, it's quite a challenge for us.
- 8:40There's organisers, but it is part of the dynamism of retail.
- 8:43You know, our, our audience is kind of demanding it in a way
- 8:47they, you know, where's it going to be next year?
- 8:48There's a real excitement. We announced when we were in
- 8:50London last year, we're in announced that this year is
- 8:52going to be in Berlin. And there was, I well, remember
- 8:55there was a big cheer went up from the from the audience
- 8:57because people were excited about that.
- 8:58And everyone was, I love leaving, leaving London saying
- 9:01see you in Berlin. A few tick boxes we have to get
- 9:05right. But we're really excited about
- 9:07return to Berlin. Me too.
- 9:10OK. So I want you to cast your mind
- 9:14and think about you are a young executive and a retailer right
- 9:18now. You're not quite CEO.
- 9:20Maybe you're as part of the, the, the, the team, right?
- 9:24You're a young, young aspiring exec that will be, you know,
- 9:28you're on that fast track. What do you think the conference
- 9:31has for someone in that sort of role before we get to what?
- 9:35Because I used to always say it's where CEO's come to learn,
- 9:37right? Yeah.
- 9:38You'll meet a CEO and you'll exchange some stuff and you'll
- 9:41learn some stuff. Yeah.
- 9:41But yeah. What do you think?
- 9:43And specifically, let's focus on this year and like the feeds
- 9:47that you're bringing in, what's the thing that you would be?
- 9:50Yeah. What would be in store for that?
- 9:52That person, yeah, it's funny. We've, we've, we take that group
- 9:55really seriously. I mean, we launched about 3
- 9:56years ago what we call an accelerator programme for those
- 10:00people at that level who aren't on the main board yet, but but
- 10:02pretty much soon will be. And because we and we've had
- 10:05great feedback from them. So we have a sort of discreet
- 10:08programme within the programme for them.
- 10:10But but more than that, they, they're allowed to be go to any
- 10:13any session that the Congress and the feedback we get and what
- 10:16our sense was that well, for anyone that comes really, it's
- 10:19that sense. You can you really do immerse
- 10:21yourself in this melting pot of all these retailers from all
- 10:25over the world, no matter what sector.
- 10:27And you know, I've been lucky enough to work in in retail
- 10:30across all sectors. And it's always strikes me the,
- 10:33the business of retail is the kind of the same no matter what
- 10:36sector you're in, what products you sell, what geography.
- 10:39Of course there's subtle differences and but but what
- 10:42makes retail tick is really important.
- 10:43So you, you know, any retailer, particularly sort of people that
- 10:47aren't on that sort of main board level or on to CEO yet,
- 10:50that opportunity to listen to and be part of that buzz.
- 10:54And, and you know, everyone is really open at the Congress and
- 10:56you you'd the chance to talk to retailers in different sectors,
- 10:59though you, you can learn so much from experiences.
- 11:02If you know, you in any retail business will undoubtedly be
- 11:05struggling with so many challenges, But to hear that
- 11:08there's someone else going through the same thing, although
- 11:11whether ahead of you, you can learn from that is, is one
- 11:13thing. We also think that, you know,
- 11:15making that step up is, is kind of quite a big step.
- 11:18You know, these are quite senior people anyway, they're running,
- 11:21you know, big teams and departments, but but to then
- 11:24move to the next level, you know, where you're on a board or
- 11:27an executive board, you know, you've suddenly got to take a
- 11:29holistic view of and have a view on how the whole business runs.
- 11:32And so being immersed in the Congress is, is, is, is part of
- 11:35that, that, that sense of hearing from so many people.
- 11:40And again, that opportunity to to share and to talk to and,
- 11:43and, and learn from, learn from each other is, is so important.
- 11:47And you know, you, you people will say they love coming to the
- 11:50Congress because you feel like you're part of this retail
- 11:53community. You know, it's, you know, from
- 11:55all over the world. And you know, people are, you
- 11:57know, what I said about retail is restless and dynamic.
- 12:00It's that everyone is hungry for, you know, to learn from
- 12:03each other. And you know, people do, you
- 12:04know, literally share, you know, how how things have been and you
- 12:08know, what they've learnt and things that have worked, things
- 12:10that haven't worked. And it's, you know, it's, you
- 12:13know, 3 days of a deep dive that you know, it's hard to get
- 12:17anywhere else really. And I think, you know, lucky
- 12:19enough that people of the level that you've described, Alex, you
- 12:22know, they, they, they come back and they, you know, they come
- 12:25back as CE OS in cases. So it's that's fun.
- 12:28Well, I didn't know. You had an accelerated
- 12:30programme, so that's good. I knew the CEO thing.
- 12:33So just focusing on the show sort of bringing us to a a wrap
- 12:37and a close yes. Tell me what again, just put
- 12:40you're you're you know, you're ACEO, you're you're on your
- 12:43flight back out of Berlin. What what, what what's going to
- 12:46be in my head? What am I going to be thinking
- 12:48about as you're? Leaving Berlin, you mean?
- 12:50Yeah, yeah, you know, No, it's and you it's a great question
- 12:53because that's how I always think.
- 12:54Like what do we want people to leave this event with and, or,
- 12:58or a session with? And I mean our, our, our theme
- 13:01for this year is retails road map to 2030.
- 13:04We, we deliberately want people to think and 2030 is less than
- 13:07five years away already, but it's, it's a good round Number
- 13:11to, to focus on because boy, there are some short term
- 13:14challenges. But if you don't think about
- 13:16where the road map is taking us and if you're not prepared for
- 13:20that, you, you could seriously be in big trouble as a business
- 13:24because there's the future is hurtling at US ever faster.
- 13:27And your competitors absolutely are, you know, making sure that
- 13:31they're on on the right journey and, and on that path.
- 13:34So, so we would want and hope people to feel like they've had
- 13:38a vision of where retail is going.
- 13:40I mean, it's a series of scenarios.
- 13:42That's the best anyone, even the best experts say.
- 13:44We know we can't tell you exactly what 2030 will look
- 13:47like, but being forewarned is forearmed.
- 13:50If you if you have a sense of what those different scenarios
- 13:53facing retail could be, you know, you need to be prepared
- 13:56for those. And we hope people go back to
- 13:58their businesses certainly with a better sense of that and a
- 14:02sense of urgency about what needs to be done today also help
- 14:05in that short term. You know, everyone is battling
- 14:07for those like for like sales and, you know, we're seeing
- 14:10inflation rising again and consumer confidence weakening
- 14:14because of what's happening in the world, you know, but there's
- 14:16still a way through through that for retail to to sharpen up and
- 14:20about being at the Congress, you know, they will learn from some
- 14:23great examples of what people are doing to to pivot to to
- 14:26change, to find new ways. So I think that's really
- 14:29important. So we we hope people they feel
- 14:31leave feeling inspired and void up by we're all in this
- 14:35together. You know what, what ideas, you
- 14:37know, can we take from it? That's a real practical
- 14:40examples, some of them proven because retailers will have
- 14:42shared we did this. That didn't work, but this
- 14:45worked. And and I know from previous
- 14:47years that is so powerful. And, you know, retailers go back
- 14:51to their businesses, some actually phone their businesses
- 14:53from the Congress to say we need to do this and what are we doing
- 14:56about that? So well, yeah, what are we
- 14:57doing, I think. That was more of the one or two
- 15:00ACO. What the hell are we doing about
- 15:02this? Exactly.
- 15:03Yes, yes, that's. Fantastic.
- 15:05Well, it's a lovely note to finish on.
- 15:07As I said, this is the prelude to us doing World Retail
- 15:11Signals, which will kick off hopefully next week based on all
- 15:14of our Diaries coordinating and the stars aligning.
- 15:17But Ian, thank you so much for taking the time to to join us on
- 15:21today's show and I look forward to seeing you on our weekly look
- 15:25at global retail. My pleasure.
- 15:27And it's been great to be here, Alex, looking forward to it.
