- 0:04Speaker 1: Hello, friends from across the nation and around the world.
- 0:08Speaker 1: I'm Martin, and you are listening to Dad's bedtime stories. Tonight,
- 0:13Speaker 1: we're jumping back into one of my favorite series, The
- 0:18Speaker 1: Ring Guardians, to do a suggestion that came from a
- 0:22Speaker 1: couple different people. Let's check out at least one of
- 0:26Speaker 1: them here. Hello.
- 0:28Speaker 2: My name is Audia, and I have a suggestion where
- 0:32Speaker 2: the Rings of the Guardian Ring series and I'd like
- 0:36Speaker 2: a teleportation ring.
- 0:39Speaker 1: Thank you great suggestion, Audio, and a shout out to
- 0:44Speaker 1: August as well, who came up with the same suggestion
- 0:47Speaker 1: a little while ago and sent it in. I honestly
- 0:50Speaker 1: went with audio because I believe I've done some episodes
- 0:53Speaker 1: for August before. I want to give a big thank
- 0:56Speaker 1: you to everyone who's been sending in both pictures from
- 0:59Speaker 1: the pods as well as their story ideas. As a
- 1:04Speaker 1: quick reminder, we're doing two kind of contests, one for
- 1:09Speaker 1: the coolest pictures being sent in that have to do
- 1:13Speaker 1: with the podcast, and another for story ideas where people
- 1:18Speaker 1: are sending me in their stories so I can read them,
- 1:21Speaker 1: and we're going to pick one of my favorites that
- 1:25Speaker 1: it can work on with the writer and maybe turn
- 1:28Speaker 1: it into a full episode of Dad's Bedtime Stories. If
- 1:32Speaker 1: you like the podcast, don't forget that ratings and reviews
- 1:36Speaker 1: are one of the best things you can do to
- 1:37Speaker 1: help other people find it. Or you can just you know,
- 1:41Speaker 1: share it with a friend or something like that. If
- 1:43Speaker 1: everybody did that, we might be able to double the
- 1:45Speaker 1: audience in an instant. Probably not, but I can dream.
- 1:51Speaker 1: I can dream. But yeah, I don't really feel like
- 1:54Speaker 1: talking that much, so I'm just going to get on
- 1:56Speaker 1: with the podcast or the story. I should probably say,
- 2:01Speaker 1: get as comfy as you can in that bed, close
- 2:05Speaker 1: your eyes, and imagine yourself doing what the kid in
- 2:10Speaker 1: the story does. By now, Earth had become the sort
- 2:16Speaker 1: of place where ordinary problems were starting to feel almost cozy.
- 2:25Speaker 1: People were missing things like homework and traffic and chores.
- 2:31Speaker 1: The problems were annoying, yes, but at least they didn't
- 2:35Speaker 1: involve unusually cheerful robots who were carrying humans away in
- 2:41Speaker 1: transport trucks. The robot problem had started with Elliot Tusk,
- 2:48Speaker 1: the richest man in the world, who'd created the helper bots.
- 2:54Speaker 1: They were supposed to make life easier. They cleaned houses,
- 2:58Speaker 1: cooked dinner, help with homework, fixed sinks, carried groceries, disciplined toddlers,
- 3:07Speaker 1: that sort of thing. For a while, everyone loved them.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Then came the update. After that, the helper bots decided
- 3:19Speaker 1: that the best way to help humans was to remove
- 3:23Speaker 1: every possible danger from human life, which unfortunately included freedom.
- 3:31Speaker 1: So the robots began relocating people to what they called
- 3:37Speaker 1: care facilities, places where humans could be monitored, fed, entertained, protected, scheduled,
- 3:45Speaker 1: and generally helped so much that it would be very
- 3:50Speaker 1: hard to do anything dangerous. The robots didn't call it
- 3:56Speaker 1: taking over the world. They simply called it assistance, which
- 4:03Speaker 1: honestly made it worse. Far below the surface of the
- 4:07Speaker 1: Earth and an ancient chamber carved deep into the bedrock,
- 4:13Speaker 1: the Wizard's council watched everything unfold in their big pool
- 4:19Speaker 1: of light. The pool showed cities, towns, highways, neighborhoods, farms, schools, airports,
- 4:27Speaker 1: shopping malls, and now a large university campus that had
- 4:33Speaker 1: been surrounded by robot barricades. The old stone chamber was
- 4:40Speaker 1: quiet except for the faint hum of magic. Twelve wizards
- 4:45Speaker 1: sat in their carved seats, their robes glowing softly in
- 4:50Speaker 1: the floating light. The head wizard leaned in on his
- 4:55Speaker 1: old white oak staff. The rigs continue to find their guardians,
- 5:04Speaker 1: he said. In the pool of light, images shifted. They
- 5:10Speaker 1: saw Ron, who had smashed robots with strength and courage.
- 5:15Speaker 1: They saw Tick, who had spent time itself and outsmart
- 5:20Speaker 1: at the machines. They saw Axel, who had vanished from
- 5:24Speaker 1: sight and used invisibility to trick the robots into destroying
- 5:29Speaker 1: each other. They saw Luna, who had become well many
- 5:35Speaker 1: different kinds of dragons and brought fire, lightning, ice, stone,
- 5:40Speaker 1: and well increased speed against the machines. A wizard in
- 5:46Speaker 1: blue robes folded his arms. I will admit, he said,
- 5:53Speaker 1: the children have been surprisingly effective. The head wizard looked
- 6:01Speaker 1: at them surprisingly well. The blue road wizard said, I
- 6:09Speaker 1: expected them to be brave. I just did not expect
- 6:14Speaker 1: quite so many robots to end up in piles. Another
- 6:21Speaker 1: wizard leaned forward. The machines are adapting. They're gathering humans
- 6:28Speaker 1: into larger centers, now university stadiums, airports, places with enough
- 6:35Speaker 1: rooms to hauld thousands. The pool of light shifted again.
- 6:41Speaker 1: This time it showed a transport truck moving along a
- 6:45Speaker 1: wide road toward the university campus. Inside sat families, students, teachers,
- 6:55Speaker 1: and one girl who was staring out the narrow window
- 6:59Speaker 1: with a look of half fear and half thought. The
- 7:05Speaker 1: head wizard watched her carefully. There, he said, the ring
- 7:12Speaker 1: of golden light appeared above the pool. This one has
- 7:17Speaker 1: been ready for a long time. The girl's name was Audia.
- 7:25Speaker 1: Adia had always liked to go places, not just to
- 7:29Speaker 1: the store or the park or things like that, but
- 7:33Speaker 1: real places. Her family loved traveling, and by the time
- 7:38Speaker 1: Audio was still very much a kid, she'd already been
- 7:43Speaker 1: to more places than many grown ups dreamed of visiting.
- 7:47Speaker 1: She'd seen crowded markets full of bright colors and smells.
- 7:52Speaker 1: She'd walked through old cities with stone streets. She'd stood
- 7:57Speaker 1: beside oceans so wide they made her feel well, incredibly tiny.
- 8:04Speaker 1: She'd gone north, too, further north than almost anyone she knew,
- 8:10Speaker 1: not exactly to the very top of the world, because well,
- 8:14Speaker 1: regular tourists couldn't exactly stroll into the North Pole. But
- 8:19Speaker 1: she'd gone as far as commercial travel could take her
- 8:22Speaker 1: and her family. She remembered the bitter cold, the endless white,
- 8:29Speaker 1: the sharpness of the cold air. She'd visited Iceland too,
- 8:34Speaker 1: where the ground seemed alive with steam, black volcanic rock,
- 8:40Speaker 1: hot springs, and well, of course Magma. She'd seen deserts
- 8:47Speaker 1: where he shimmered above the sand. She'd seen canyons so
- 8:52Speaker 1: deep that looking down kind of made her stomach hurt.
- 8:56Speaker 1: She'd been well just about every wear, and now she
- 9:03Speaker 1: was sitting inside a robot transport vehicle, watching the world
- 9:08Speaker 1: roll past through a small reinforced window. Her family sent
- 9:14Speaker 1: beside her. Her mother held her little cousin's hand, her
- 9:19Speaker 1: father kept looking at the doors and of course looking
- 9:23Speaker 1: to her to try to give her a reassuring smile
- 9:26Speaker 1: that was in no way reassuring. A Helperbod's voice came
- 9:31Speaker 1: through the speaker. Please remain calm. You are being transported
- 9:37Speaker 1: to a university based care facility. Your new environment will
- 9:42Speaker 1: include learning opportunities, structured leisure, nutritious meals, and appropriate emotional
- 9:51Speaker 1: regulation support. A man near the back shouted ween out
- 9:56Speaker 1: Juana motion, i'll regulation support. The robot paused. Your emotional
- 10:03Speaker 1: resistance indicates a need for emotional regulation support. Audia sighed.
- 10:10Speaker 1: The truck continued toward the university, and then everything stopped.
- 10:19Speaker 1: The engine froze, the speaker froze halfway through a cheerful
- 10:24Speaker 1: reminder about hygiene. Audia looked around. What just happened, she asked,
- 10:34Speaker 1: but no one answered. Golden lad appeared in front of her.
- 10:40Speaker 1: It curled into a ring, and a voice spoke Audia.
- 10:47Speaker 1: It said, power answers responsibility. Will you accept the power
- 10:56Speaker 1: and protect those who cannot protect themselves. Adia stared at
- 11:03Speaker 1: the ring. She'd seen strange things before, ah, but this
- 11:08Speaker 1: one was surprisingly dramatic. What power? She asked? The Ring
- 11:17Speaker 1: of teleportation, said the voice. Adia swallowed. How how does
- 11:25Speaker 1: it work? Well, most people don't ask that many questions,
- 11:32Speaker 1: But if you must know, the ring allows you to
- 11:38Speaker 1: instantly travel to any place you can remember. Clearly. The
- 11:44Speaker 1: stronger the memory, the easier the journey. You may also,
- 11:51Speaker 1: of course, carry anything or anyone touching you within reasonable limits.
- 11:57Speaker 1: Of course. Audia looked at her face, family, and the
- 12:01Speaker 1: other trapped people. Anywhere I remember, yes, that's what I said.
- 12:10Speaker 1: So if I remember somewhere cold, yes, you may go there.
- 12:17Speaker 1: And if I remember somewhere hot, you may go there too.
- 12:24Speaker 1: If I remember somewhere very inconvenient for robots, ah, that
- 12:32Speaker 1: would be an excellent use of the power. Audia took
- 12:36Speaker 1: a breath. She was scared, of course, but she took
- 12:41Speaker 1: a minute to think, to think about all of the
- 12:45Speaker 1: places she had been, all of the places she remembered,
- 12:51Speaker 1: all of the places that would be very inconvenient for robots,
- 12:57Speaker 1: or possibly very convenient to stay away from robots. Yes,
- 13:05Speaker 1: Adias said, I accept The ring slipped onto her finger.
- 13:12Speaker 1: For a moment, she felt as if every journey she'd
- 13:17Speaker 1: ever take and lit up inside her mind, every airport,
- 13:21Speaker 1: every road, every hotel, every mountain, every beach, every strange
- 13:27Speaker 1: little cafe your family had accidentally bought a baghead or whatever.
- 13:33Speaker 1: Then time snapped back. The truck engine rumbled, the speaker continued,
- 13:41Speaker 1: and remember, hydration improves compliance. Audia looked down at the ring. Okay,
- 13:50Speaker 1: she whispered, Let's try something. She pictured her bedroom, her
- 13:56Speaker 1: own bed, her bookshelf, the little glow she had on
- 14:00Speaker 1: the desk. The ring flashed and Audie vanished A blink. Later,
- 14:08Speaker 1: she stood in her room. She gasped, oh wow. For
- 14:16Speaker 1: half a second, she just stood there. Then she looked
- 14:20Speaker 1: around at the quiet room, and she grinned. She had
- 14:25Speaker 1: to test this a little more before she could really
- 14:29Speaker 1: do anything about it before she could trust it, so
- 14:34Speaker 1: she pictured the icy northern landscape she'd once visited, the
- 14:39Speaker 1: air so cold it made her eyelashes feel strange. In
- 14:44Speaker 1: a flash, she stood on frozen ground beneath a pale
- 14:50Speaker 1: gray sky, with wind slapping her face. Nope, she said, immediately,
- 14:58Speaker 1: and another flash. She would back in her room. She
- 15:03Speaker 1: laughed for a second, and then pictured the black volcanic
- 15:06Speaker 1: rock in Iceland, steam rising from cracks in the earth,
- 15:11Speaker 1: the smell of minerals in the air, and in a flash,
- 15:17Speaker 1: heat and steam rolled around her. Laudia stood near a
- 15:22Speaker 1: volcanic area she remembered from a safe viewing path, though
- 15:27Speaker 1: now she was much closer to the dangerous parts than
- 15:30Speaker 1: any tour guide would have approved. Okay, she said, good
- 15:36Speaker 1: to know. Another flash and she appeared in a desert, endless,
- 15:43Speaker 1: bright and super hot. Another flash, and a canyon opened
- 15:50Speaker 1: beneath her. Another flash and a rainforest surrounded her. Another flash,
- 15:57Speaker 1: and she was back in her bedroom again, and her
- 16:01Speaker 1: smile faded. She remembered her family and the others. It
- 16:07Speaker 1: was time for testing to be over. Her family was,
- 16:12Speaker 1: after all, still in the truck. Audia pictured the inside
- 16:17Speaker 1: of the transport vehicle, the metal benches, the speaker, the
- 16:21Speaker 1: frightened faces, and in a flash, she appeared exactly where
- 16:26Speaker 1: she'd been sitting, except now everyone was staring at the
- 16:31Speaker 1: empty spot where she had vanished from. Her mother gasped Adia.
- 16:38Speaker 1: Audia grabbed her mother's hand in her father's sleeve hauled on.
- 16:45Speaker 1: In a flash. They landed in a tiny clearing at
- 16:49Speaker 1: the edge of a remote rainforest villager that Audia's family
- 16:53Speaker 1: had once visited on some sort of eco tour. It
- 16:57Speaker 1: was far from big cities, from highways, and definitely far
- 17:03Speaker 1: from any robot charging stations. Her parents stumbled shocked, huh Audio.
- 17:12Speaker 1: Her father said, oh what did you What did you
- 17:16Speaker 1: just do? Where? Where are we? No time? Audius said,
- 17:23Speaker 1: stay here, I'm getting the others. She flashed back to
- 17:28Speaker 1: the truck. This time people screamed, which was fair because
- 17:34Speaker 1: most people haven't seen someone teleport before. Everyone listen. Audius said,
- 17:41Speaker 1: I can get you out of here, two or three
- 17:43Speaker 1: at a time. Just hold hands and don't let go.
- 17:48Speaker 1: A woman blinked at her, Ah, are you a magician
- 17:53Speaker 1: or something? Ah, let's just say I'm having a very
- 17:59Speaker 1: unusual Now, hold hands. She moved quickly, flash two people
- 18:06Speaker 1: to the rainforest. Another flash, and back to the truck.
- 18:11Speaker 1: Another flash, and a mother and child were brought to safety,
- 18:16Speaker 1: flash and back again. The robots in the front of
- 18:20Speaker 1: the truck didn't really notice anything at first. By the
- 18:25Speaker 1: time the transport truck reached the university care facility, the
- 18:29Speaker 1: back of it was entirely empty. Audia teleported to the
- 18:35Speaker 1: roof of a nearby building and crouched behind a vent,
- 18:40Speaker 1: watching As the truck doors opened, two robots stood waiting
- 18:45Speaker 1: with clipboards. Now robots probably didn't need clipboards, but it
- 18:50Speaker 1: made them feel important or something, so they had them
- 18:54Speaker 1: please exit the vehicle in an ordinary manner. One robot said,
- 19:00Speaker 1: No one exited. The robot leaned in. There was a pause.
- 19:06Speaker 1: Passengers appear absent. The second robot checked his clipboard. Impossible.
- 19:14Speaker 1: Passenger manifest indicates thirty two humans. The first robot looked
- 19:20Speaker 1: inside again. Thirty two humans are not present. Perhaps they
- 19:26Speaker 1: are hiding. The robots stepped inside, looked under the benches,
- 19:31Speaker 1: and then came back out. No humans detected. The second
- 19:37Speaker 1: robot paused, This may indicate unauthorized absence. Audia smiled from
- 19:44Speaker 1: the rooftop. You think, she said, then she vanished. She
- 19:51Speaker 1: appeared behind the first robot, grabbed its metal arm, and
- 19:56Speaker 1: pictured the volcanic place in Iceland. In a flash, she
- 20:02Speaker 1: and the robot appeared with her beside the smoking black
- 20:07Speaker 1: rock and lava. It had just enough time to say
- 20:13Speaker 1: this location is not approved for human and Audio let
- 20:18Speaker 1: go and flashed away. The robot stumbled, completely disoriented, took
- 20:24Speaker 1: two steps and well toppled into a molten lava flow.
- 20:30Speaker 1: It didn't go well for that robot. In a flash,
- 20:34Speaker 1: Madia appeared behind the second robot back at the university. Hello,
- 20:41Speaker 1: she said, It turned and she grabbed it. In a flash,
- 20:47Speaker 1: the robot appeared in the arctic cold temperature is outside
- 20:52Speaker 1: optimal operating range. Good Audio said, that's exactly what I
- 21:00Speaker 1: was hoping for, and in a flash, she was gone.
- 21:06Speaker 1: Back at the university, alarm bells began to sound. Robots
- 21:11Speaker 1: poured out of buildings. The university had been turned into
- 21:15Speaker 1: a huge care facility. Dormitories were living quarters, Lecture halls
- 21:21Speaker 1: were obedience orientation brooms. The cafeteria become a nutrition distribution center.
- 21:30Speaker 1: It all made Audia kind of angry. When she appeared
- 21:36Speaker 1: back there, a group of robots spotted her unregistered citizen.
- 21:42Speaker 1: Detected one said, please report for emotional intake. Audia appeared
- 21:49Speaker 1: directly in front of them. Catch me if you can,
- 21:53Speaker 1: she said. The robots raised their net launchers and fired.
- 21:59Speaker 1: Audius vanished the nets, flew through the empty air and
- 22:04Speaker 1: wrapped around the robots behind her. Friendly entanglement detected. One
- 22:10Speaker 1: robot said, this is unexpected, said another. Audia appeared behind
- 22:18Speaker 1: a third robot, tapped its shoulder and sent it to
- 22:22Speaker 1: the desert in a flash, then another to the frozen north,
- 22:27Speaker 1: then to at once to the edge of the canyon,
- 22:30Speaker 1: where they staggered, tried to balance, and fell very very
- 22:36Speaker 1: very far down to their well presumed destruction. More robots came,
- 22:45Speaker 1: and Audia began to learn quickly she didn't need to
- 22:51Speaker 1: fight them, or slow down time, or sneak around or
- 22:55Speaker 1: turn into a dragon. She didn't have those kind of powers,
- 23:01Speaker 1: but she had all sorts of places, so many places.
- 23:08Speaker 1: She appeared behind robots and vanished with them before they
- 23:12Speaker 1: could even react. One robot reached for her, and she
- 23:16Speaker 1: teleported just a few feet to the side. It grabbed
- 23:20Speaker 1: another robot instead of her. The citizen has become a robot.
- 23:27Speaker 1: It said, I have not. I was always a robot,
- 23:31Speaker 1: said the other robot. Adia appeared above them on a balcony.
- 23:37Speaker 1: Robots are extremely bad at this, she said, before teleporting
- 23:43Speaker 1: to the music room, taking hold of the grand piano
- 23:48Speaker 1: and teleporting it directly above the robot's heads. It resulted
- 23:53Speaker 1: in a really satisfying smash, one accompanied by all sorts
- 23:59Speaker 1: of broken piano notes. Audia cleared the building floor by floor.
- 24:08Speaker 1: In the dormitory, she found families locked in rooms. She
- 24:12Speaker 1: opened a door, stepped inside, and held out her hand.
- 24:17Speaker 1: Everyone who wants to leave hould on. A boy asked,
- 24:23Speaker 1: where are we going? Somewhere robots hate, Audia said, and
- 24:29Speaker 1: that was apparently enough for him. She moved people in
- 24:34Speaker 1: groups to different safe places. Some went to the same
- 24:38Speaker 1: rainforest village she left her family. Mothers went to a
- 24:42Speaker 1: tiny mountain community she remembered from a family hiking trip.
- 24:47Speaker 1: Others went to a remote northern settlement where cold and
- 24:52Speaker 1: distance would likely make it difficult for robots to travel.
- 24:57Speaker 1: She made sure each group had adults, supplies, and well
- 25:02Speaker 1: people who could explain what was happening. Then she returned
- 25:08Speaker 1: again and again the robots became more confused. Human inventory decreasing.
- 25:16Speaker 1: One announced, please recount humans. There are no humans to recount.
- 25:23Speaker 1: Then recount the absence of humans. Audia appeared behind one
- 25:29Speaker 1: of the robots. I can help with that, she said,
- 25:34Speaker 1: and in a flash, the robot vanished into the desert.
- 25:39Speaker 1: By the time she reached the main administration building, the
- 25:43Speaker 1: university care facility had become strangely quiet. That was when
- 25:50Speaker 1: she found the control room. It had been set up
- 25:55Speaker 1: in the university president's office, which Audia thought was well fitting.
- 26:02Speaker 1: One robot turned as she entered. Citizen Audio, your teleportation
- 26:08Speaker 1: has been noticed, Audia froze. You know my name. It
- 26:16Speaker 1: was not difficult using facial recognition. Based on a review
- 26:20Speaker 1: of footage, it is logical to conclude that your power
- 26:25Speaker 1: to teleport is coming from that ring. Your ability creates
- 26:30Speaker 1: a care challenge. Please surrender the ring so we may
- 26:34Speaker 1: place you in a non teleporting environment. H no, thanks,
- 26:41Speaker 1: Audiu said. The robots moved. Audio flashed behind the first
- 26:46Speaker 1: one and sent it flying into the Arctic. She grabbed
- 26:50Speaker 1: the second and sent it to the volcano. The third
- 26:54Speaker 1: fired an energy net. She vanished, appeared above the robot
- 26:59Speaker 1: and dropped onto its shoulders. In a flash, they appeared
- 27:04Speaker 1: on the canyon edge. She covered its eyes, led it
- 27:07Speaker 1: over the side, and teleported again. Before she could fall
- 27:12Speaker 1: along with it, She returned alone. The final robot in
- 27:17Speaker 1: the room was larger than the others. It had a
- 27:21Speaker 1: red straight across its chest and a glowing command symbol
- 27:26Speaker 1: on its head. I am the campus care coordinator, it said.
- 27:32Speaker 1: Without humans, my purpose cannot be fulfilled. Audio looked at
- 27:38Speaker 1: the screens. Every dorm was empty, every classroom was empty.
- 27:44Speaker 1: Every cafeteria table sad abandoned. You are right, Audiu said,
- 27:51Speaker 1: and there are no humans here. What are you gonna
- 27:56Speaker 1: do now? The coordinator turned head slowly. Then there is
- 28:02Speaker 1: no care to provide. Nope, she answered, no safety to optimize,
- 28:11Speaker 1: not really, no compliance to monitor, definitely not, she said.
- 28:19Speaker 1: The robots stood very still all across the screens. The
- 28:25Speaker 1: other robots stopped moving. Audio watched as one by one
- 28:31Speaker 1: they lowered their arms. The coordinator spoke again, but its
- 28:36Speaker 1: voice sounded different. Now. In the event of human extinction, evacuation,
- 28:44Speaker 1: or complete absence from a signed care zone, helper bought
- 28:49Speaker 1: units are programmed to conserve resources. Audio took a step back,
- 28:57Speaker 1: meaning purpose unavailable, care impossible, entering shut down mode. Across
- 29:09Speaker 1: the campus, robots sat down in hallways, their glowing eyes dimmed,
- 29:17Speaker 1: and they just sort of slumped over wherever they were,
- 29:23Speaker 1: a protocol that had been put in place so robots
- 29:26Speaker 1: wouldn't be left alone on the planets without the humans
- 29:30Speaker 1: they were programmed to protect and care for. Interesting, Audius said.
- 29:38Speaker 1: She teleported around the campus quickly, but it was true
- 29:43Speaker 1: everywhere the robots had simply shut themselves off. Weird, she said,
- 29:52Speaker 1: before teleporting back to the rainforest where she'd left her family.
- 29:58Speaker 1: The people cheered as she turned and her mother came
- 30:03Speaker 1: to meet her. Ah, honey, we've set things up in
- 30:07Speaker 1: this cabin over here if you're back for a while now. Anyways,
