- 0:29Speaker 1: Norman Jolly, and Ken Mayer are also heard in the cast.
- 0:33Speaker 1: The script is credited to Lou Houston, with Larry Robertson directing.
- 0:38Speaker 1: For a late-hour visit to the solar system of Space Patrol,
- 0:42Speaker 1: we go now to Mars. And now, we return to
- 0:46Speaker 1: the original broadcast.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Rice Chex and Wheat Chex, the bite-sized cereals in the
- 0:55Speaker 2: red and white checkerboard packages, present Space Patrol! High adventure
- 1:02Speaker 2: in the wild, vast reaches of space, visions of daring
- 1:05Speaker 2: in the name of interplanetary justice. Travel into the future
- 1:09Speaker 2: with Buzz Parry, Commander-in-Chief of the Space Patrol! Space Patrol!
- 1:17Speaker 2: In today's transcribed space patrol adventure, Buzz and Happy, exploring
- 1:21Speaker 2: a wooded section of Mars, have just seen two men
- 1:23Speaker 2: in strange, primitive masks holding a girl as captive. As
- 1:27Speaker 2: the two space patrollers move to rescue her, Happy falls
- 1:30Speaker 2: into a pit covered with branches and leaves. Give me
- 1:33Speaker 2: a hand. I'll pull you out. Yes, sir. I can't
- 1:36Speaker 2: quite reach it. Lie down on the edge of the pit. There.
- 1:39Speaker 2: That's fine, sir. Now I can... Commander, look out! What's
- 1:42Speaker 2: the matter? Look behind you. There's a man in a mask,
- 1:45Speaker 2: and he's got a spear at your back! We'll return
- 1:48Speaker 2: in just a moment with today's exciting space patrol adventure,
- 1:52Speaker 2: The Mystery of the Masked Martians. Do you hear those drums,
- 2:02Speaker 2: space patrollers? They're coming from an ancient city on Mars,
- 2:10Speaker 2: and they're sending you a special message from Commander Corey
- 2:14Speaker 2: about the brand-new, super-scary, super-spooky-looking surprise Commander Corey has for you.
- 2:20Speaker 2: The man from Mars, Totemhead, with magic forehead vision. Now,
- 2:29Speaker 2: in just a few moments, you'll find out how you
- 2:31Speaker 2: can get one. And wait till you see it, gang. Wow!
- 2:34Speaker 2: This weird totem head is more than 12 inches high,
- 2:37Speaker 2: fits over your head, rests on your shoulders, makes a
- 2:40Speaker 2: complete disguise because that magic forehead vision plate lets you
- 2:43Speaker 2: see out, but nobody else can see in. It's got
- 2:47Speaker 2: a sinister-looking face in the front, a spooky-looking face in
- 2:50Speaker 2: the back, ears that flop, a swell beak-like nose, and
- 2:54Speaker 2: fang-like teeth. Put on your totem head, and your pals
- 2:57Speaker 2: won't know whether you're coming or going. They won't know
- 3:00Speaker 2: who you are either, because with a magic forehead vision,
- 3:02Speaker 2: you can see them, but they cannot see you. It's
- 3:05Speaker 2: like having an extra pair of X-ray eyes. Now, gang,
- 3:08Speaker 2: here's all you do to get your very own man-from-Mars
- 3:11Speaker 2: totem head. Just send our rice checks or wheat checks,
- 3:15Speaker 2: Box Top, together with your name and address and 25
- 3:19Speaker 2: cents in coin to Space Patrol, Box 686, St. Louis, Missouri.
- 3:25Speaker 2: Don't forget your 25 cents. That's Space Patrol, Box 686, St. Louis, Missouri.
- 3:37Speaker 2: And now today's Space Patrol adventure, The Mystery of the
- 3:40Speaker 2: Masked Martians. At regular intervals, giant towers rise up from
- 3:45Speaker 2: the Martian desert, ready to relay power along the equator
- 3:48Speaker 2: to a city far beyond the horizon. Around an uncompleted
- 3:52Speaker 2: tower is a cluster of temporary buildings and stacks of supplies.
- 3:57Speaker 2: In the office of Ed Hicks, superintendent of construction, Buzz
- 4:00Speaker 2: and Happy look on as Hicks points to a map
- 4:03Speaker 2: in this section of Mars.
- 4:03Speaker 3: We've got all these towers up without a bit of trouble, Buzz.
- 4:07Speaker 3: But from the minute we set up camp at this site,
- 4:09Speaker 3: things have happened.
- 4:10Speaker 2: A kind of thing.
- 4:11Speaker 3: Well, I suppose you could sum it up as sabotage.
- 4:14Speaker 3: Supplies disappeared, food mostly. The mess hall burned down three
- 4:18Speaker 3: nights ago.
- 4:18Speaker 2: We've had accidents. Accidents? Anyone hurt?
- 4:21Speaker 3: No, not seriously, but it slowed down our work considerably.
- 4:24Speaker 3: Men have reached a point where they don't trust each other.
- 4:27Speaker 2: Uh-oh. On a job like this, that's bad.
- 4:29Speaker 4: You're right, but still, there's nothing tangible to go on
- 4:32Speaker 4: outside of these accidents. And they might be due to
- 4:34Speaker 4: the men's nervousness.
- 4:36Speaker 2: No, nothing tangible. Except that one of my men is missing.
- 4:40Speaker 3: Oh?
- 4:41Speaker 2: One of the foremen, Turk Fowler, knew a man he
- 4:43Speaker 2: wasn't well liked. Could your men have ganged up on him?
- 4:46Speaker 2: In the present state of mind, possibly. One of our
- 4:49Speaker 2: scout tanks is missing, too. Then this man Fowler may
- 4:52Speaker 2: have run off. Yeah. But anyone with any sense would
- 4:55Speaker 2: have headed west toward the nearest settlement.
- 4:57Speaker 3: Tracks leading from the camp indicate the scout tank headed east.
- 5:00Speaker 2: East?
- 5:01Speaker 4: Nothing in that direction for hundreds of miles, except for
- 5:03Speaker 4: a wooded section about 30 miles away.
- 5:05Speaker 3: I know.
- 5:06Speaker 2: As far as you know, then, there have been no
- 5:08Speaker 2: strangers looking around the camp. No. No strangers at all,
- 5:11Speaker 2: except for the girl. Fucked her up. I don't know
- 5:14Speaker 2: her name.
- 5:14Speaker 3: She drove into camp yesterday in a surface car.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Wanted to buy some food. Seems to be why I'm
- 5:19Speaker 2: short of supplies. What is the girl doing out here?
- 5:22Speaker 2: I don't know. I didn't see her myself.
- 5:24Speaker 3: From what my assistant said, she was doing some exploring
- 5:26Speaker 3: over to the east.
- 5:28Speaker 2: Could there be any connection between this girl and the
- 5:30Speaker 2: mysterious events in the camp? Or the disappearance of Fowler?
- 5:33Speaker 2: I don't see none. Frankly, I can't see a sensible
- 5:36Speaker 2: explanation for any of them.
- 5:38Speaker 3: Fowler may have left because he was afraid of the
- 5:39Speaker 3: men or afraid of what's going on here.
- 5:42Speaker 4: Still, he seems to have headed in the direction the
- 5:44Speaker 4: girl did, toward the east. Well, if the men won't
- 5:46Speaker 4: talk to you, I doubt that I could get anything
- 5:48Speaker 4: out of him.
- 5:49Speaker 2: Right now, at least.
- 5:50Speaker 3: I'm worried about Fowler. He could have been in that
- 5:52Speaker 3: mysterious ship at the camp or sent somebody to look
- 5:55Speaker 3: for him. Fowler doesn't want to be found. A search
- 5:57Speaker 3: by air would give him a chance to find him.
- 5:59Speaker 3: Another scout tank could follow his tracks across the wasteland.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Have you got one available? Yeah, sure. I'll have one
- 6:06Speaker 2: fueled up right away. Fine. Happy and I will try
- 6:08Speaker 2: to find them. Mile after mile, Buzz and Happy follow
- 6:15Speaker 2: the tracks of the stolen scout tank across the Martian desert. Then,
- 6:19Speaker 2: across the almost level wasteland, they see a range of
- 6:22Speaker 2: low hills covered with what on Mars is thick vegetation.
- 6:26Speaker 2: As the spinning threads of their scout tank bring them
- 6:28Speaker 2: closer to the hills, happy turn for the Marshal. Commander,
- 6:31Speaker 2: this is all beginning to look familiar. Sure happened. We
- 6:33Speaker 2: were here a few weeks ago to rescue that girl scientist. Oh, yeah.
- 6:36Speaker 4: Hey, that knoll up there, that's where the spaceship crashed
- 6:39Speaker 4: 900 years ago.
- 6:40Speaker 2: The wreck that was supposed to have a treasure aboard. Uh-huh. Hey, Commander,
- 6:43Speaker 2: look up ahead. There's a vehicle of some kind. That's
- 6:46Speaker 2: not a scout tank. It's an ordinary circus car. It
- 6:49Speaker 2: looks like it stalled in the sand. Must be equipped
- 6:51Speaker 2: with special threads or couldn't maneuver on this terrain. Well,
- 6:54Speaker 2: didn't Ed Hicks say the girl who came into camp
- 6:56Speaker 2: was driving a surface car? Yes. Well, stop and have
- 6:58Speaker 2: a look. There's no one in the car, sir. No
- 7:06Speaker 2: one's in sight. The tracks of that scout tank continue
- 7:15Speaker 2: right past the car. And on toward those wooded hills.
- 7:18Speaker 4: Look at these footprints. They lead from the surface car
- 7:22Speaker 4: to the tank tank.
- 7:23Speaker 2: Then the girl got out of this car and into
- 7:25Speaker 2: the tank. And she must have gone willingly. There's no
- 7:27Speaker 2: sign of a struggle. Let's take a look in the car.
- 7:32Speaker 4: Let's see who this car's registered to.
- 7:37Speaker 2: Uh-oh. What is it, sir? Look what's lying in the
- 7:40Speaker 2: back seat. The mask.
- 7:43Speaker 4: Why, it's the same kind of mask we found weeks
- 7:44Speaker 4: ago near the wrecked ship and gave to.
- 7:47Speaker 2: What was that girl's scientist's name? Lauren. Son of Lauren.
- 7:51Speaker 2: It's the same mask.
- 7:52Speaker 4: Now we know who the girl was that visited the
- 7:54Speaker 4: construction camp. This car is registered to a vehicle renting
- 7:57Speaker 4: company in Lowell City. Then Miss Loring must have driven
- 8:00Speaker 4: all the way from Lowell City, hundreds of miles across
- 8:02Speaker 4: the desert all by herself.
- 8:03Speaker 2: Apparently she's not alone now. Do you think she's in
- 8:06Speaker 2: any danger from following? Perhaps not.
- 8:07Speaker 5: I don't know why he stole a scout car and
- 8:10Speaker 5: headed in this direction.
- 8:12Speaker 4: Come on, let's get back in the truck and follow
- 8:14Speaker 4: these tracks.
- 8:23Speaker 2: There's the tank, sir, right at the edge of the woods.
- 8:25Speaker 2: And over at the left is the wrecked spaceship. The
- 8:27Speaker 2: Black Star. I don't see anybody up on the nose.
- 8:30Speaker 2: Maybe they're poking around inside the wreck. If that's where
- 8:33Speaker 2: they were going, they wouldn't have parked the tank here
- 8:35Speaker 2: over here. They're probably exploring the woods now, since Fowler
- 8:43Speaker 2: may not be too delighted to see us under radar. Cautiously,
- 8:50Speaker 2: Buzz and Hattie work their way deep into the woods.
- 8:53Speaker 2: following a trail marked by broken twigs and an occasional footfall.
- 8:58Speaker 5: They seem to have a definite idea of where they're going.
- 9:00Speaker 2: Yes, sir. But who's doing the leading? Miss Lauren or Fowler?
- 9:03Speaker 5: The girl probably. Fowler may be holding a gun on them.
- 9:07Speaker 4: When we last saw her a few weeks ago, she
- 9:09Speaker 4: was convinced that the people attached to the ship were
- 9:11Speaker 4: space pilots and had hidden stolen jewels somewhere in this area.
- 9:14Speaker 4: Not only the jewel, but everything else.
- 9:16Speaker 2: I left a few figures still.
- 9:18Speaker 4: The last survivor of that wreck must have passed away
- 9:20Speaker 4: eight centuries ago. Hey, maybe he left a map, and
- 9:23Speaker 4: Miss Loring found it. There was one mystery about that
- 9:25Speaker 4: wreck that Miss Loring couldn't explain. When the pirates crashed,
- 9:29Speaker 4: they placed a phone to help.
- 9:30Speaker 2: According to the ancient records, there were 20 men and
- 9:32Speaker 2: women aboard the Black Star. Eighteen survived the crash. Yes, sir.
- 9:36Speaker 2: And help never arrived. Those graves up on the hill
- 9:39Speaker 2: near the wreck proved that. That's the mystery.
- 9:41Speaker 4: Remember, there are 20 graves. Who buried the last survivor? Hey,
- 9:46Speaker 4: that is a mystery.
- 9:47Speaker 2: Of course, it's a simple fact. The record was wrong
- 9:49Speaker 2: that there were 21 people aboard.
- 9:51Speaker 4: Miss Loring may have all the facts now, Commander.
- 9:53Speaker 2: It'll make quite a story. Those pirates landing with a
- 9:56Speaker 2: ship full of stolen museum relics from Earth. Yes, and
- 9:58Speaker 2: the choice they had to make. Between living out their
- 10:01Speaker 2: lives here on Mars or calling for rescue and going
- 10:04Speaker 2: back to Earth as criminals. And there could have been
- 10:06Speaker 2: a battle between those who wanted to stay and those
- 10:08Speaker 2: who wanted to go. Oh, wait a minute. There's a
- 10:15Speaker 2: movement in that book. Smoke and rockets. What was that? Commander,
- 10:26Speaker 2: it's an arrow. Listen, whoever shot it was running away.
- 10:30Speaker 2: Why would Fowler be using a primitive weapon like a
- 10:32Speaker 2: bow and arrow? It's a girl. Diana Loring. She's in trouble.
- 10:35Speaker 2: Come on, Hap. Easy, man. Let me go up here. Commander, look.
- 10:46Speaker 2: Am I losing my mind? I'm losing my mind. They're
- 10:51Speaker 2: holding fast. Just like the one we found.
- 10:54Speaker 5: The big teeth, the bulging eyes, and the feathers.
- 10:56Speaker 2: I can't understand.
- 10:57Speaker 5: These skis are like criminals. They're carrying bows and arrows.
- 11:01Speaker 2: They're heavy seas. They're wrestling. They'll start to shoot when
- 11:04Speaker 2: you're ready. What about Miss Lauren? Just like you're unconscious.
- 11:07Speaker 2: I can't wait to look at her. Importantly, if you've
- 11:09Speaker 2: got her away from those men, guess what I can't
- 11:12Speaker 2: be doing. Yes, sir. Hey! Happy. Happy, you hurt?
- 11:18Speaker 6: No, sir.
- 11:19Speaker 2: I didn't see this hole. It was covered up with
- 11:21Speaker 2: branches and leaves. Give me a hand. I'll pull you out. Yes, sir.
- 11:24Speaker 2: I can't quite reach it. Now lie down on the
- 11:26Speaker 2: edge of the pit. There. That's fine, sir. Now I can... Commander,
- 11:31Speaker 2: look out. What's the matter? Look behind you. There's a
- 11:33Speaker 2: man in a mask. He's got a spear at your back.
- 11:39Speaker 2: We'll return to Space Patrol in just a moment. Weird. Fantastic.
- 11:47Speaker 2: The man from Mars told him ahead. And you can
- 11:56Speaker 2: have one, space patrollers. In a second, you'll find out how.
- 12:00Speaker 2: And when you put on your own totem head, you'll
- 12:02Speaker 2: look just like a real space spook. Even your best
- 12:04Speaker 2: pal won't know you. It's more than 12 inches high,
- 12:07Speaker 2: and from head to shoulders, your identity is a complete secret.
- 12:11Speaker 2: That magic forehead vision lets you see out, but your
- 12:14Speaker 2: friends can't see in. Or tell who's wearing the Man
- 12:17Speaker 2: from Mars totem head. Think of the fun you can
- 12:19Speaker 2: have fooling them. They won't know which direction you're headed
- 12:22Speaker 2: either because the totem head has a face in the
- 12:24Speaker 2: front and one in the back, too. It comes in
- 12:26Speaker 2: real Martian colors, red and yellow, green and black, with
- 12:30Speaker 2: floppy ears, a beak-like nose, and fang-like teeth. Now remember,
- 12:34Speaker 2: the magic forehead vision, that's X-ray vision. You can see out,
- 12:38Speaker 2: but nobody can see in. Gang, to get your manful
- 12:41Speaker 2: Mars totem head, do this. Just send a rice check
- 12:45Speaker 2: or wheat check box top together with your name and
- 12:48Speaker 2: address and 25 cents in coin to Space Patrol Box
- 12:53Speaker 2: 686 St. Louis, Missouri. Don't forget your 25 cents. That's
- 12:58Speaker 2: Space Patrol Box 686 St. Louis, Missouri. This offer good
- 13:03Speaker 2: only in the USA and may be withdrawn at any time.
- 13:11Speaker 2: And now back to our space patrol adventure, The Mystery
- 13:13Speaker 2: of the Masked Martian. Buzz and Happy have trailed the
- 13:17Speaker 2: stolen scout tank across the Martian desert to a wooded area.
- 13:20Speaker 2: In a clearing deep in the woods, they saw Fana Loring,
- 13:24Speaker 2: a girl scientist struggling in the grasp of two strange
- 13:26Speaker 2: figures wearing weird primitive masks. As the space patrollers rushed
- 13:30Speaker 2: to a rescue, Happy toppled into a pit covered with branches.
- 13:33Speaker 2: As Buzz stretched himself, pulling on the ground at the
- 13:36Speaker 2: edge of the pit to assist Happy, another masked figure appeared.
- 13:39Speaker 2: Right now, Happy is looking up from the pit, horrified
- 13:42Speaker 2: as the man in the grotesque mask holds the punt
- 13:44Speaker 2: of a spear against the commander's back. Don't move, sir.
- 13:46Speaker 2: He looks like he's ready to jab you. You've got
- 13:49Speaker 2: your ray gun. Give him a glance.
- 13:50Speaker 5: It flew out of my hand when I said it.
- 13:53Speaker 2: I didn't get mine out of my holster without making
- 13:54Speaker 2: me suspicious. Oh! Did he hurt you? That's just a warning.
- 14:00Speaker 2: The other one they knew I was reaching for a weapon.
- 14:02Speaker 2: He's taking your gun. They're a savage. This one's smart.
- 14:05Speaker 5: He doesn't know how to use my ray gun. He's
- 14:07Speaker 5: making sure I won't use it.
- 14:07Speaker 2: He's leaving it out of reach with his foot. Help him.
- 14:11Speaker 2: Get that man out of pit. Come in. He talks English.
- 14:16Speaker 2: He must know everything you say. Hurry. All right. Give
- 14:19Speaker 2: me your hand, Hector. Yes, sir. Up you go. There.
- 14:26Speaker 2: You stay right there. Do not move, or I will
- 14:29Speaker 2: use my spear. We won't move. Who are you? I
- 14:33Speaker 2: am Borg. Captain Borg. Stay where you are.
- 14:37Speaker 3: I will kick your weapons into the pit.
- 14:41Speaker 2: I don't get this, sir. These people wear those masks
- 14:44Speaker 2: and use bow and arrows and spears, and yet they
- 14:46Speaker 2: can speak English. And this one calls himself Captain.
- 14:48Speaker 5: I could have finished this Borg with that spear, but
- 14:50Speaker 5: he didn't.
- 14:51Speaker 2: I could rush him more, sir. That wouldn't help John Alonzo,
- 14:54Speaker 2: even if he overpowered him. Sir? There go our guns.
- 14:58Speaker 2: Into the pit.
- 14:59Speaker 1: Go.
- 14:59Speaker 2: That way. Across the clearing. All right, Borg. Captain Borg.
- 15:04Speaker 2: Where are you taking us? To the village of my people.
- 15:08Speaker 4: You shot an arrow at us a while ago. Your
- 15:10Speaker 4: men are holding a girl. She's a friend of ours.
- 15:12Speaker 4: Now you're threatening us with your spear.
- 15:14Speaker 2: Why? We haven't harmed you. That is a lie. The
- 15:18Speaker 2: other man drew his weapon. It made big sounds. And
- 15:22Speaker 2: two of my men fell to the ground. The other man?
- 15:25Speaker 2: That must be Fowler. Borg, listen. Those men that fell,
- 15:27Speaker 2: there were no wounds on them, were there? No, but
- 15:30Speaker 2: they do not move. They're merely asleep. They'll wake up
- 15:33Speaker 2: and be all right again. Let us take the girl
- 15:36Speaker 2: and the other man, and we'll go away. No. You
- 15:39Speaker 2: are not of the Great Ones. You do not wear masks. Therefore,
- 15:44Speaker 2: you are evil. Great Ones? Who are the Great Ones?
- 15:47Speaker 2: We will not talk here. Go. I will follow you
- 15:53Speaker 2: with my spear at your backs. You better heal him, Hathoran.
- 15:56Speaker 5: I think Captain Borg will listen to reason eventually.
- 16:02Speaker 2: With the masked Martian walking behind them with Ray's spear,
- 16:05Speaker 2: Buzz and Happy make their way through the woods. At last,
- 16:08Speaker 2: they come to a clearing containing a few rude huts.
- 16:12Speaker 2: In the face of a cliff are the openings of
- 16:14Speaker 2: several caves. As Buzz and Happy are marching through the
- 16:17Speaker 2: tiny village, they're aware of faces peering at them through
- 16:20Speaker 2: the doorways of the huts. Captain Borg pods them toward
- 16:23Speaker 2: a cave guarded by a huge man, also wearing one
- 16:26Speaker 2: of the strange masks and holding a spear. The guard
- 16:30Speaker 2: stands as though he were made of stone, except for
- 16:33Speaker 2: a stiff salute to Borg with his long spear. Get
- 16:36Speaker 2: in the cave. I will come for you when my
- 16:40Speaker 2: crew has decided your fate. Do not attempt to escape.
- 16:44Speaker 2: All right, Captain Borg, but there are a couple of
- 16:46Speaker 2: facts you ought to know. Get in the cave! Get easy.
- 16:48Speaker 2: Come on, Hattie.
- 16:51Speaker 1: Yes, sir.
- 16:58Speaker 2: Amanda! Hey, the girl in the cave.
- 17:00Speaker 6: Amanda!
- 17:00Speaker 2: You all right, Miss Loring?
- 17:02Speaker 6: As well as can be expected.
- 17:03Speaker 2: What about Paolo? Is he here too?
- 17:04Speaker 6: He's asleep in the back of the cave. He was
- 17:06Speaker 6: hit by an arrow. He used his laser and engorged
- 17:08Speaker 6: him in.
- 17:08Speaker 2: Did you get that?
- 17:10Speaker 6: It's just a flesh wound in the shoulder. But we
- 17:11Speaker 6: should get him to a doctor before it becomes infected.
- 17:13Speaker 5: If he goes out of here, that isn't going to
- 17:15Speaker 5: be easy.
- 17:16Speaker 2: Hey, Miss Loring, who are these people? Do you know?
- 17:18Speaker 6: Yes, but the truth is so fantastic, you won't believe it.
- 17:21Speaker 5: They're descendants of the people who cracked open the Black Storm,
- 17:24Speaker 5: isn't that right?
- 17:24Speaker 6: Yes, Commander. It's the most amazing example of survival I've
- 17:27Speaker 6: ever heard of.
- 17:28Speaker 2: That ship crashed here 870 years ago. That means this
- 17:32Speaker 2: is about the 25th generation. But those graves on the hill,
- 17:36Speaker 2: they're exactly two. Why aren't there more?
- 17:38Speaker 6: That hill is regarded as sacred ground. It's reserved for
- 17:41Speaker 6: the greatness.
- 17:42Speaker 2: The greatness? Oh, that's the phrase Borg used.
- 17:45Speaker 6: These people believe that their remote ancestors were superior beings
- 17:48Speaker 6: who came out of the sky.
- 17:50Speaker 2: They came out of the sky, all right, but they
- 17:51Speaker 2: sure weren't superior. They were pirates.
- 17:53Speaker 5: Remember, Happy, in 800 years, facts can become distorted into legend.
- 17:57Speaker 2: Yes, but didn't they have any books on the ship?
- 17:59Speaker 6: In the struggle for survival, reading probably became a lost
- 18:02Speaker 6: art in the three generations.
- 18:03Speaker 4: It must have taken all of their efforts to obtain food.
- 18:06Speaker 4: Reading wasn't a practical skill.
- 18:08Speaker 5: But those crazy masks, they weren't practical either.
- 18:10Speaker 6: No, but they symbolized the great masks. Those masks are
- 18:14Speaker 6: copies of those that were aboard the spaceship. Relics of
- 18:17Speaker 6: primitive tribes that look like they're thousands of years ago.
- 18:20Speaker 2: Yet they're not quite like the old masks.
- 18:22Speaker 6: After all, these people are intelligent and creative. Each generation
- 18:27Speaker 6: probably added its own ideas and designs.
- 18:29Speaker 4: Yeah, but you'd think they'd know that people who fly
- 18:31Speaker 4: in spaceships don't wear primitive masks.
- 18:33Speaker 2: The first few generations probably did, I think.
- 18:35Speaker 4: For hundreds of years, everything these people know has been
- 18:37Speaker 4: passed on by word of mouth for 30 generations.
- 18:40Speaker 2: Yeah, I noticed that Borg calls himself Captain and refers
- 18:43Speaker 2: to his people as his crew.
- 18:44Speaker 6: Yes, those terms are carried over from the original survivors
- 18:46Speaker 6: of the spaceship crash. Each new leader of this colony becomes.
- 18:50Speaker 2: A captain of a crew. Sounds funny, but I guess
- 18:53Speaker 2: it makes sense.
- 18:54Speaker 5: How many people are there in this group now, Miss Lange?
- 18:57Speaker 6: Not more than six.
- 18:58Speaker 4: Hey, that's quite a mob when they've got bows and
- 19:00Speaker 4: arrows and we haven't got any weapons at all.
- 19:01Speaker 2: It's ironic, isn't it?
- 19:03Speaker 6: Those primitive weapons, those museum ones, hadn't been aboard that spaceship.
- 19:08Speaker 2: These people couldn't.
- 19:09Speaker 6: Have saved them.
- 19:09Speaker 2: That's right.
- 19:10Speaker 5: Chances are the ammunition for the modern weapons was exhausted
- 19:13Speaker 5: in a few years.
- 19:14Speaker 2: Well, right now I wish the spears and bows and
- 19:16Speaker 2: arrows were exhausted. How are we going to get out
- 19:18Speaker 2: of this fix?
- 19:18Speaker 5: The chief weapon now is to know how these people
- 19:20Speaker 5: think and.
- 19:21Speaker 2: What they think. Exactly.
- 19:23Speaker 6: Now, if we can convince him.
- 19:24Speaker 2: It's Boric. Well, Captain Borgman, what's the verdict? Verdict? I
- 19:31Speaker 2: do not understand. That's no matter. I have met with
- 19:36Speaker 2: my crew. We have agreed that you will not leave
- 19:39Speaker 2: our woods alive.
- 19:40Speaker 6: Then you keep us here.
- 19:42Speaker 2: It is nearly night. Deimos, the large moon, is already
- 19:46Speaker 2: climbing across the sky. When he is overtaken by a
- 19:50Speaker 2: swift little brother Phobos, I will come for you.
- 19:53Speaker 3: The best marksmen of my crew will aim their arrows
- 19:56Speaker 3: so that you will not suffer.
- 19:58Speaker 2: Oh, that's great. Thanks a million. The great ones will
- 20:00Speaker 2: be avenged. Until I return, goodbye. Goodbye. We've been in
- 20:11Speaker 2: some tough spots, but this is a nightmare.
- 20:13Speaker 4: He calls the moons of Mars by their right names,
- 20:15Speaker 4: and yet he's going to finish us off with bows
- 20:16Speaker 4: and arrows like some primitive savage.
- 20:18Speaker 6: What are we going to do?
- 20:19Speaker 4: Another half hour, it'll be dark. It'll give us about
- 20:22Speaker 4: an hour before Phobos passes the other moon.
- 20:28Speaker 2: How's that shoulder, Father? It's pretty sore. Otherwise, I feel okay.
- 20:39Speaker 2: All right, now listen. The worst I know about you
- 20:40Speaker 2: right now is that you stole a scout tank from
- 20:42Speaker 2: the construction camp. I can explain that. I had to
- 20:44Speaker 2: get away. The men were blaming me for that sabotage.
- 20:46Speaker 2: But I didn't have a danger. Never mind that. We're
- 20:49Speaker 2: going to get out of here. We've got to act now.
- 20:51Speaker 4: With that bad shoulder, you aren't going to be much
- 20:52Speaker 4: help in a fight. So happy now to jump the
- 20:54Speaker 4: guard outside the cave.
- 20:56Speaker 2: You should be ready to run and have a nice time.
- 20:58Speaker 2: Don't worry. He's standing out there, holding his spear. Let's go.
- 21:07Speaker 2: Look at that bonfire's burning. What a weird sight.
- 21:24Speaker 6: The whole living is out. He only knows now.
- 21:29Speaker 2: Pack of bloodthirsty savages. Wait. Stand still a minute. With
- 21:34Speaker 2: the bonfires and the light from those two moons, we're.
- 21:36Speaker 5: Going to have a tough time getting away from here
- 21:38Speaker 5: without being seen.
- 21:39Speaker 2: Commander, look. A couple of them are coming this way.
- 21:41Speaker 6: Oh, these things.
- 21:41Speaker 2: I don't think so. Not yet. Let's run for it. No, Father.
- 21:43Speaker 2: We wouldn't stand a chance.
- 21:45Speaker 5: Up ahead of the yard, there's another cave.
- 21:47Speaker 2: We'll duck in there until it's clear. Come on. We
- 21:55Speaker 2: made it. We are to be better off now than
- 21:58Speaker 2: we were before. Yeah? We haven't got a guard to
- 22:00Speaker 2: handle this. And Forbes' crew doesn't know.
- 22:02Speaker 5: We've escaped yet.
- 22:03Speaker 6: Just let the commander handle it.
- 22:04Speaker 2: Brother, turn off that light. Take it easy, Commander. My
- 22:07Speaker 2: back's to the cave opening. It won't show from outside.
- 22:09Speaker 2: One flash of that atomo light and we'd have the
- 22:11Speaker 2: whole village in here on our necks. Hey, look back
- 22:15Speaker 2: there in the cave. Looks like a museum. Brother, shield
- 22:19Speaker 2: that light with your hand. Happy you and Connor stand
- 22:21Speaker 2: close behind me. I'll never block any stray bees. Yes, sir. Wow,
- 22:25Speaker 2: look at all this stuff.
- 22:26Speaker 5: Masks, bows and needles, spacesuits and tools.
- 22:29Speaker 6: And drums. Primitive drums. This one is African. And this is...
- 22:34Speaker 6: This is a South Eastern angel. Corneo, perhaps.
- 22:37Speaker 2: Never mind the drums. Look at that. Wow. A whole
- 22:41Speaker 2: chest full of gem diamonds. Look at these emeralds. This
- 22:44Speaker 2: one is worth at least a million credits.
- 22:46Speaker 6: Remember, this cave is... It is sort of a shrine
- 22:49Speaker 6: to these people. Here are the relics from their ancestors' ships.
- 22:53Speaker 6: Reserved for centuries.
- 22:54Speaker 2: Interesting, isn't it?
- 22:56Speaker 4: Space suits of the 22nd century, next to prehistoric weapons.
- 23:01Speaker 4: It's all the same to these people. Father, leave those
- 23:04Speaker 4: jewels alone. Now, let's take what we can. What good
- 23:06Speaker 4: are they to these saboteurs?
- 23:07Speaker 2: Put them back. We aren't going to steal their treasures. Commander,
- 23:10Speaker 2: are you nuts? This was pirate loot to begin with.
- 23:13Speaker 2: Did their ancestors steal it?
- 23:14Speaker 5: We haven't got time to argue about efforts and honesty.
- 23:16Speaker 5: Do you want to walk out of this cave, or
- 23:18Speaker 5: do I carry you out?
- 23:21Speaker 2: No, no, kid. We could all be rich.
- 23:24Speaker 5: I'm more interested in getting away from here alive.
- 23:26Speaker 2: Commander, can I see if it's all clear outside the cave?
- 23:29Speaker 2: Wait a minute. These masks. If we each put on
- 23:32Speaker 2: a mask, we might be able to work our way
- 23:34Speaker 2: around the edge of the village without being challenged. You
- 23:36Speaker 2: are nuts. What about our clothes? A chance we'll have
- 23:38Speaker 2: to take.
- 23:39Speaker 4: If someone gets very close, our clothing will merge.
- 23:41Speaker 2: With the darkness.
- 23:41Speaker 6: It's worth a try. Sure.
- 23:43Speaker 2: Even if they know we've escaped, they'd never suspect us
- 23:45Speaker 2: of wearing these masks. Come on. Pick a mask and
- 23:47Speaker 2: let's get out of here. A moment later, four masked
- 23:55Speaker 2: figures emerge from the dark cave and stroll casually along
- 23:58Speaker 2: the perimeter of the village. At times, they pass within
- 24:02Speaker 2: a few yards of the villagers, and the weird masks
- 24:04Speaker 2: seem to change expression in the flickering glare of the bonfires. Buzz, Happy,
- 24:09Speaker 2: and their two companions at last reach the darkness of
- 24:12Speaker 2: the woods. Only then does Buzz permit them to remove
- 24:16Speaker 2: their strange disguises.
- 24:18Speaker 4: All right, we're safe now. Yeah, we can find a
- 24:21Speaker 4: scout coach. We can use Phobos up there as a guide.
- 24:23Speaker 4: I think they're almost due west of here. I don't
- 24:26Speaker 4: hear any excitement back at the village. I guess they
- 24:28Speaker 4: don't know.
- 24:28Speaker 2: We've escaped yet.
- 24:29Speaker 4: Maybe a few minutes. Let's get as deep into the
- 24:31Speaker 4: woods as we can before that mob comes after us.
- 24:34Speaker 6: Commander, what's going to happen to those people back there?
- 24:37Speaker 4: If I were you, I'd order a space patrol squadron
- 24:39Speaker 4: to wipe them out with blast guns.
- 24:40Speaker 6: Fowler, what a dreadful force.
- 24:42Speaker 2: Somehow, we've got to convince these people that we aren't enemies.
- 24:45Speaker 5: Take time and patience and understanding that.
- 24:47Speaker 2: Eventually they can learn to live in our modern society.
- 24:54Speaker 2: With the two moons of Mars racing across the sky
- 24:56Speaker 2: over them, Buzz and his party at last reach the
- 24:58Speaker 2: edge of the woods and stand beside one of the
- 25:01Speaker 2: scout tanks. Now let's get into the tank. It's a
- 25:03Speaker 2: long trip back to the construction site. Just a minute.
- 25:05Speaker 2: You three are staying here. Hey, what... Commander, he's got
- 25:08Speaker 2: a gun. Yeah, and it's a blaster. I'm going to
- 25:10Speaker 2: put your tank out of commission, Commander, and then I'm
- 25:12Speaker 2: heading for Lowell City. Where did you get that weapon from?
- 25:14Speaker 2: Back in the cave while you were picking out your masks.
- 25:16Speaker 2: I've also got a handful of those jewels. Don't be
- 25:19Speaker 2: a fool. You can't get away with this. I was
- 25:20Speaker 2: going to stop him. Better think it over. This is
- 25:23Speaker 2: a very stupid move. Oh, it is, huh? I've known
- 25:25Speaker 2: for weeks that Miss Loring was planning this little one-girl expedition...
- 25:29Speaker 2: And I knew if there was a treasure here, I'd
- 25:30Speaker 2: make her lead me to it.
- 25:32Speaker 6: Commander, I never saw this man until he came out
- 25:34Speaker 6: here next time.
- 25:35Speaker 2: Well, that's right. But I know your plans, Miss Lauren.
- 25:38Speaker 4: I got a job with the tower construction outfit to
- 25:39Speaker 4: put me near the treasure.
- 25:41Speaker 2: And to sabotage.
- 25:42Speaker 4: You engineered that to delay the construction on that particular
- 25:45Speaker 4: tower until Miss Lauren showed up.
- 25:46Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 25:47Speaker 4: And her visit to the camp saved me a couple
- 25:49Speaker 4: of scouting trips. Now just stand back, all of you.
- 25:53Speaker 4: I'll make sure you can't use this tank to follow me.
- 25:56Speaker 2: You see that gun, Fowler? Corey, I warned you... or
- 26:00Speaker 2: I'd have to get him to his feet.
- 26:02Speaker 6: Amanda, he had that gun pointed right at you. Why,
- 26:05Speaker 6: he pulled it.
- 26:06Speaker 2: He did pull the trigger. Oh, and you took that chance?
- 26:09Speaker 2: It wasn't much of a chance. Fowler found that gun
- 26:11Speaker 2: in the cave, right? Oh, then you figured it wouldn't
- 26:13Speaker 2: fire because it was so old. No, half old. Weapons
- 26:15Speaker 2: are often as deadly as new ones. I couldn't know
- 26:18Speaker 2: about the gun, but I do know of human nature. But, sir,
- 26:21Speaker 2: what's human nature got to do with the gun not firing?
- 26:23Speaker 2: Human beings don't use spears and bows and arrows if
- 26:25Speaker 2: there's a more powerful weapon available. I can be almost certain...
- 26:29Speaker 2: That gun had fired its last shot centuries ago. Okay, Hap,
- 26:33Speaker 2: let's get Fowler into the tank. We've got a long
- 26:35Speaker 2: trip ahead of us. In just a moment, a preview
- 26:42Speaker 2: of next week's exciting space patrol adventure brought to you
- 26:45Speaker 2: by Nestle's Quick for the greatest tasting chocolate milk and
- 26:49Speaker 2: those famous Nestle's chocolate bars. How do you do, Captain Tufeld? Hey,
- 26:57Speaker 2: what on the... Who's that? It's me, Happy. I fooled
- 26:59Speaker 2: you with this man from Mars' totem head, didn't I?
- 27:02Speaker 2: You sure did, Hat. Why, you can't tell who's inside
- 27:05Speaker 2: those spooky totem heads. That's magic forehead vision, space controllers.
- 27:09Speaker 2: It lets you see out, but nobody can see in.
- 27:12Speaker 2: You're completely disguised when you wear your totem head. Smoke
- 27:16Speaker 2: and rockets, the totem head is fantastic.
- 27:17Speaker 7: More than 12 inches high, all brightly colored with a
- 27:20Speaker 7: scary totem face in front and another face in back.
- 27:23Speaker 7: So your friends can't tell whether you're coming or going.
- 27:25Speaker 7: And remember, the magic vision forehead works only for you.
- 27:29Speaker 7: So you can see out, but nobody can see in.
- 27:31Speaker 7: Now here's how to get your very own totem head.
- 27:33Speaker 2: Send the lid or a tracing of the front of
- 27:36Speaker 2: the label of Nestle's Quick, together with your name and
- 27:40Speaker 2: address and 25 cents, to Space Patrol, Box 686, St. Louis, Missouri.
- 27:47Speaker 7: That's Space Patrol, Box 686, St.
- 27:51Speaker 2: Louis, Missouri. And now, a preview of next week's exciting
- 27:57Speaker 2: Space Patrol adventure. Buzz and Happy have entered a manufacturing
- 28:01Speaker 2: plant on Jupiter to capture a fugitive. Now, in a large,
- 28:05Speaker 2: empty storeroom, they find their search blocked by a locked door.
- 28:09Speaker 2: It must be in the next room, sir. I heard
- 28:11Speaker 2: a noise.
- 28:11Speaker 5: Let's get away from this door.
- 28:13Speaker 2: It looks pretty rugged. What happened to the lights? I
- 28:16Speaker 2: thought Mr. Hopper had met you, sir. Listen. This is
- 28:18Speaker 2: what's going.
- 28:23Speaker 3: On.
- 28:30Speaker 2: They've got ray guns. Quiet toward those sounds. We've got
- 28:35Speaker 2: to hit them before they hit us. Be sure to
- 28:40Speaker 2: join us next week for the thrilling story, The Tattooed Atom.
- 28:48Speaker 2: Space Patrol, created by Mike Moser, starring Ed Kemmerer as
