- 0:00Gavin: Hey, I have a curiosity.
- 0:02Gavin: Can you guess my favorite Halloween movie?
- 0:07Aaron: Casper, Hocus Pocus?
- 0:09Aaron: I don't know.
- 0:11Gavin: Let's find out.
- 0:42Aaron: Welcome everybody to this week's episode of the Double Dram.
- 0:46Aaron: For our Halloween spooktacular.
- 0:50Gavin: I like how you did this.
- 0:51Aaron: Yep.
- 0:51Aaron: No, it's it it's everybody like this would be where the word spook tacular would normally be.
- 0:57Aaron: This week we delve into what makes Halloween fun.
- 1:04Aaron: Not the candy, not the costumes.
- 1:08Aaron: Scary movies.
- 1:11Aaron: Oh, scary movies.
- 1:13Aaron: Yeah, so Gavin and I thought we should create our own B-level scary movie.
- 1:20Aaron: And then we decided, you know what?
- 1:21Aaron: It sounds like a lot of work.
- 1:23Aaron: What if we just drink whiskey instead?
- 1:24Aaron: Yeah, right before we lost.
- 1:27Gavin: You know, if we're gonna make movies, we're gonna make whiskey movies, right?
- 1:30Gavin: I think that seems fair.
- 1:32Aaron: So tonight's theme is Halloween movies.
- 1:39Aaron: To that end, we created our own episode of Moonlight Monster.
- 1:47Gavin: Ooh, this sounds like it's gonna be very scary, and I love it.
- 1:52Aaron: Yeah, so part of what makes a good scary movie scary is that jumps and gets you.
- 1:59Aaron: Ooh, yes.
- 2:01Aaron: So I asked Gavin to find us a great whiskey to jumps out and gets a hold of us right out of the get-go, and then we drink no pre-poor tonight.
- 2:11Gavin: Yeah.
- 2:12Aaron: We are going straight into the deep end of the pool.
- 2:15Gavin: And and it is deep because um, well, before we really go into what it is, it we're going high proof right off the bat.
- 2:24Aaron: Yeah, I noticed the word cast strength on the side of the bottle.
- 2:27Gavin: Yes.
- 2:28Aaron: So that was enough to scare me a little bit.
- 2:30Gavin: We're drinking Moonlight Mayhem, the extended cut expression.
- 2:36Aaron: So the the extended cut means it is got some stuff that originally was on the cutting room floor.
- 2:42Aaron: Yes.
- 2:42Aaron: Put that back in.
- 2:43Aaron: Put it back in.
- 2:44Aaron: I got it.
- 2:45Gavin: All right, let's we might have to save that audio.
- 2:53Gavin: Man, that check out that core.
- 2:55Gavin: That's a great cat.
- 2:56Gavin: It's good looking.
- 2:57Aaron: It's good looking.
- 2:58Aaron: It's a fabulous stopper.
- 2:59Aaron: Kind of got a movie reel vibe about it.
- 3:02Aaron: See, fitting the theme.
- 3:04Aaron: Gavin, it Gavin, a plus on your bottle selection tonight.
- 3:07Gavin: Thank you.
- 3:08Gavin: So we are going to be sipping Filmland Spirits Moonlight Mayhem.
- 3:16Gavin: This is Cash Strength sitting at depending on which bottle you have, about 114 to 117.5.
- 3:28Aaron: This one comes this one comes in a little higher than that, right?
- 3:31Aaron: 117.4.
- 3:32Aaron: 117.4.
- 3:33Aaron: Yeah.
- 3:33Aaron: It's a good number.
- 3:35Gavin: Uh, mash bill on this guy is 75% corn, 21% rye, and 4% malted barley.
- 3:45Gavin: This is distilled in Indiana, and it's produced and bottled for Filmland Spirits.
- 3:51Gavin: So Filmland Spirits is an NDP and uh essentially means a non-distilling producer, right?
- 4:00Gavin: Um, what's really fun about Filmland is every expression you know, right over there.
- 4:09Aaron: Sorry, I was I was trying to hold that one in.
- 4:11Aaron: Yeah, that's a little secured inside you.
- 4:16Aaron: Keep your mouth open, breathe.
- 4:18Aaron: Like, try to cut down on some of those fumes.
- 4:21Gavin: It's like ghost dead, you know, and you you know, no, I have no idea what you're talking about.
- 4:28Gavin: You don't know the movie Ghost Dead?
- 4:30Gavin: No.
- 4:31Gavin: Oh is it a Halloween movie?
- 4:33Gavin: No, then don't talk about it tonight.
- 4:34Gavin: I don't remember.
- 4:35Gavin: It's been a long time.
- 4:37Aaron: It does have ghost in the title, yeah, so that seems reasonable.
- 4:40Gavin: Yeah.
- 4:40Gavin: The main character or the main actor is a dad, huh?
- 4:44Gavin: Is a dad?
- 4:44Gavin: Is a dad and he dies, and then he's a ghost.
- 4:48Aaron: And oh is it scary or like a warm heartfelt tale about a father's love from beyond the grave?
- 4:55Aaron: Yeah, that one.
- 4:56Aaron: I'm ready.
- 4:58Aaron: I'm ready to start writing taglines for our movie.
- 5:01Gavin: Our movie Moonlight Monster.
- 5:03Gavin: Moonlight Monster.
- 5:04Gavin: All right.
- 5:05Gavin: This uh so let's go back, film land spirits, all their expressions have something to do with like the B-rate, B style uh horror movies.
- 5:17Gavin: So this one, we've got uh a whole cast of characters here, but there's some werewolves and um diamonds.
- 5:27Aaron: Like the label looks like a B-rated horror flick poster, right?
- 5:34Aaron: Like the kinds of things that doesn't make your regular movie theater, but your little indie movie theater in town is running that kind of stuff.
- 5:42Aaron: Yeah, it's fabulous artwork on the bottle.
- 5:45Gavin: Yeah, and and everything about the label uh makes it look like it it's not just the front image, it's everything about the label looks like a movie poster.
- 5:57Aaron: Like even the even the uh the back of the label looks like movie credits.
- 6:02Aaron: Yep.
- 6:03Aaron: The must be 21 to buy this looks like it's a PG uh rated R or PG 13 label on the back.
- 6:11Aaron: Like they've done an excellent job fitting the motif.
- 6:14Aaron: And I will say, a stunningly beautiful bottle.
- 6:19Aaron: Like just the glass of the bottle is very pretty and elegant.
- 6:23Gavin: Yeah, uh, they've got it stamped on the on the back here, and like even the neck, the neck label.
- 6:29Gavin: Uh their tagline is a blockbuster in every bottle.
- 6:33Gavin: We shall see.
- 6:36Gavin: I don't know.
- 6:37Gavin: That's kind of small for a blockbuster video.
- 6:41Aaron: Anymore.
- 6:41Aaron: I don't know if there are blockbuster videos anymore.
- 6:44Aaron: I I think I I think I saw something that the last one had closed.
- 6:48Gavin: Well, then I think I saw something where somebody recreated one and it looks like an old nostalgia.
- 6:56Aaron: Like, why would you not?
- 6:57Aaron: If you had because nobody's renting movies anymore.
- 7:01Aaron: That's why you don't.
- 7:02Aaron: It's a horrible business idea.
- 7:04Aaron: I don't think it's a business, I think it's just a guy, it's like a museum.
- 7:08Gavin: Built one out in front of his house?
- 7:09Gavin: Yeah, that's ridiculous.
- 7:11Gavin: It's like a museum, man.
- 7:13Aaron: Do you like it?
- 7:14Aaron: I'm trying to think if there's ever been a store that I'm like, if they close the last one of those, I'm going to go build one because I like that store so much.
- 7:23Aaron: Oh man.
- 7:24Aaron: No.
- 7:24Gavin: Did you spend time at Blockbusters?
- 7:26Gavin: Of course, of course.
- 7:29Aaron: I I had two friends that worked at Blockbusters.
- 7:34Aaron: I'm gonna tell you, you're talking to a guy who worked at the competitors.
- 7:38Aaron: I worked at the grocery store's video department.
- 7:41Aaron: Uh-oh.
- 7:41Aaron: Which in every little small town I had, that was like if you didn't have a blockbuster, you had a video department at uh at your local grocery store.
- 7:51Aaron: I didn't know Pickley Weekly had a video.
- 7:53Aaron: No, actually, I where I grew up, they were called Dylan's, owned by Kroger, right?
- 7:59Aaron: But we had a video department.
- 8:01Aaron: And uh this was back in the days when uh Be Kind Rewind, because you had to rewind your VHS tapes, right?
- 8:08Aaron: Yep, that's right.
- 8:09Aaron: That's right.
- 8:10Aaron: I feel like this is not where we were planning on going.
- 8:12Aaron: We've already derailed it.
- 8:14Gavin: But I like it.
- 8:15Gavin: I like it.
- 8:15Gavin: This is fun.
- 8:17Gavin: Um, as we mentioned previously, we're gonna talk Halloween movies.
- 8:28Aaron: Yeah, it seems like a reasonable thing to do.
- 8:32Aaron: Yeah.
- 8:32Gavin: Are you are we ready to dive in?
- 8:34Gavin: Yeah, what do you want to talk about?
- 8:36Gavin: Um, good question.
- 8:37Aaron: I'll be honest, scary horror movies are not my typical genre.
- 8:45Aaron: So, this is probably in the knowledge pool, this is a shallow end for me, but I'd like to think I'm at least hip enough of the the culture that I know of or about most of these things.
- 9:03Aaron: So you're saying you're cultured?
- 9:05Gavin: Well, we're gonna find out.
- 9:06Aaron: Perhaps I'm wrong.
- 9:08Gavin: So, talking about scary movies and and kind of growing up.
- 9:13Gavin: Are there movies that scared the beetle juice out of you?
- 9:20Gavin: See what I did there?
- 9:22Gavin: It wasn't Beetlejuice.
- 9:24Gavin: Huh?
- 9:24Gavin: It wasn't Beetlejuice.
- 9:25Gavin: Beetlejuice was funny more than it was scary.
- 9:28Gavin: I mean, I didn't say I just said that it scare the beetle juice out of you.
- 9:33Aaron: Careful, you've said it twice now.
- 9:35Aaron: Um, I are you're talking like we should leave the closet light on or the hallway light on because going to bed tonight is going to be a little unnerving, kind of scary.
- 9:51Aaron: Or the you get that where like the hair on your arm stands up.
- 9:57Aaron: Yeah.
- 9:57Aaron: Um, or the like something happens and everyone in the room goes like that kind of scary.
- 10:02Aaron: I guess it's suspenseful.
- 10:03Aaron: Three completely different kinds of scares.
- 10:06Aaron: All quintessentially scary movie for sure, but not not the same.
- 10:13Gavin: Well, you could do all three of those together, but they could be separate.
- 10:17Gavin: Because you could be um laying in your bed and you're like, oh man, I I need it, I need a night light.
- 10:25Gavin: I need the nightlight because I'm scared.
- 10:28Gavin: But then you kind of get that that weird feeling, like maybe Freddie Krueger's gonna pop out of the bed mattress and hit you with the blades.
- 10:40Aaron: Yeah, yeah.
- 10:41Aaron: So I I grew up in a house where my parents were very strong into the you don't watch PG 13 movies until you're P until you're 13, and you don't watch rated R movies until you're 18.
- 10:56Aaron: Um, and so what that meant was I had to work at an opportunity to watch some of these movies.
- 11:02Aaron: So quite often we were watching, if I was watching a scary movie, I was watching it at a friend's house with a group of guys hanging out, which ultimately does soften the roughed edge of a scary movie, right?
- 11:18Aaron: Like alone, at home, in the dark.
- 11:23Aaron: That has to be the the the scariest way to watch a movie.
- 11:27Aaron: So I I will say, um for me, the movie growing up that really like mmm, I'm not comfortable with what that made me go through was The Exorcist.
- 11:41Aaron: Oh The Exorcist was that movie like, oh man, that makes my skin crawl.
- 11:47Aaron: Thinking about it afterwards made me feel uneasy, like that kind of level of scare.
- 11:55Aaron: Aside from all of the the classic jump scares where the guy jumps out with a knife and everybody jump, like to me that that's a brief moment of startled.
- 12:06Aaron: That's not the same as that kind of like makes me question things in my soul, kind of scary.
- 12:12Aaron: Yeah.
- 12:12Aaron: Um you know, there were I remember at the time when I went and saw the Blair Witch project, much later in life, right?
- 12:26Aaron: Did not scare me, but it was presented in a way in which movies had not been presented up until then, right?
- 12:33Aaron: It was it was touted as a documentary from what they had found, and it was shot as if like on a camcorder or something.
- 12:41Aaron: Yeah, like there was everything about it felt like, yeah, that that sounds legit.
- 12:45Aaron: Um, and so you watched it and you're like that that that is bothersome.
- 12:52Aaron: Um, I think I think the problem tends to be is so many of the movies we think of as Halloween movies really aren't actually Halloween movies.
- 13:03Aaron: Oh they're a different time of the year, right?
- 13:06Aaron: Like there's very not all, right?
- 13:10Aaron: Obviously, the movie Halloween is at Halloween, right?
- 13:15Aaron: Are you sure?
- 13:16Aaron: But there's like by definition, Friday the 13th can't be Halloween.
- 13:22Aaron: Halloween's on the 31st, right?
- 13:24Aaron: So is it close?
- 13:27Aaron: Yeah.
- 13:28Aaron: Um does it fit the genre and the feel and the style of what you want to watch on on Halloween or like that thing for sure, right?
- 13:36Aaron: I'm not I'm not suggesting that it's not a Halloween watcher.
- 13:41Aaron: But we had this whole debate when we talked about Christmas movies.
- 13:46Aaron: Does having a movie just set at Christmas time make it a Christmas movie?
- 13:50Aaron: And my argument was ultimately no, it has to be about the genre, the feel of Christmas, not just set in that time frame.
- 13:59Aaron: I would make the argument the inverse becomes also true when we talk about Halloween movies.
- 14:04Aaron: It doesn't have to be set at Halloween to become a quintessential Halloween movie.
- 14:08Aaron: Ooh, okay.
- 14:09Aaron: Right.
- 14:10Aaron: It just needs to convey the essence of what Halloween is to then become Halloween.
- 14:16Aaron: I growing up, classic ghost movie was Ghostbusters.
- 14:21Aaron: I knew it.
- 14:22Aaron: For sure.
- 14:23Aaron: Um again, I couldn't tell you if that actually occurred at Halloween and like if Halloween was one of the days in the movie or not.
- 14:33Aaron: I I it wasn't part of the integral part of the storyline, but what makes it a Halloween movie is it's ghost, right?
- 14:40Aaron: It's the paranormal, it's all that kind of stuff.
- 14:43Aaron: Um, I'd say the other movie that really got me was The Ring.
- 14:48Aaron: Do you remember that one?
- 14:49Aaron: Yeah, where you played the video and then like the gal crawled out of the TV.
- 14:53Aaron: Like I remember at the time thinking, oh like that one just runs shivers up your spine.
- 14:59Aaron: Um, I and I think a lot of it was because for me, a lot of these movies I didn't end up seeing until much later, just because of the struggles of parents who stopped you from watching things you weren't supposed to watch.
- 15:16Aaron: And I think that diminishes a bit of a scary movie if if time has passed since it came out.
- 15:23Aaron: My primary example was I had talked with my children, who I have one child who absolutely loves a scary movie.
- 15:31Aaron: There's nothing better than a horror movie for her, like that's her favorite thing.
- 15:35Aaron: And I was telling her and and and the other kids, like, man, like Exorcist was that one, like that one, like still to this day, kind of gets you like, oh, I feel uneasy.
- 15:44Aaron: All right, and so we we went and got it online, right?
- 15:48Aaron: Not Blockbuster, we just streamed it like every other person in the world now, and we watched it all together, and my kids are like, that was dumb, right?
- 15:58Aaron: I like that wasn't scary at all.
- 16:00Aaron: And I'm like, Nothing, got nothing, but the truth of the matter is they were kind of right, right?
- 16:08Aaron: Part of what makes a scary movie is that you've never seen anything like it before, and every movie after it borrows a little bit of that, and so it ultimately watching other movies after diminishes the first movie, right?
- 16:21Aaron: That's it, at least my interpretation.
- 16:23Aaron: I'm by no means a film expert, but I even going back watching it a second time, it's not the same.
- 16:31Aaron: Like, did you did you ever have a movie that like watched it the second time and you're like just as scary as the first time?
- 16:39Gavin: Uh I'm like you, I didn't I didn't really watch a ton of scary movies growing up, like all the time.
- 16:49Gavin: It wasn't like that genre, like really so.
- 16:52Aaron: So we've we've picked an a theme for an episode in which neither of us are anywhere close to an expert, but except for the drinking whiskey ball.
- 16:59Aaron: Yeah, we're pretty good at that.
- 17:01Aaron: Um, I'm still not sure we're experts, we're just really, really diligent amateurs.
- 17:08Gavin: Yeah, the whole college try for sure.
- 17:11Gavin: Um, I think I watched a lot of those movies when I shouldn't have uh growing up.
- 17:19Gavin: But then I remember being at like middle school parties and high school parties, and um they would be on the TV.
- 17:27Gavin: Like my friends would have them on the TV, and then we'd have them in the living room, and then uh music playing outside or in the other rooms or whatever.
- 17:36Gavin: But if you wanted to sit down and watch one of these movies, you should you know it's you could, and actually, uh one of my friends uh that I grew up with, um, her family owned a little movie store.
- 17:48Gavin: Um, not Blockbuster, it was called West Side Video.
- 17:53Gavin: And um that was out on the east side of town, right?
- 17:56Gavin: Yeah, exactly.
- 17:56Gavin: Actually, it was right on Main Street, uh but I remember like was it on the west side of Main Street?
- 18:03Gavin: I'm trying to help them out here.
- 18:05Gavin: Uh their last name was West, so it's that's why it was West Side Video.
- 18:10Aaron: And it wasn't his primary job, it was a side hustle.
- 18:13Gavin: So makes sense.
- 18:14Gavin: Um, but um in our hometown, the that movie store, their store was on the first floor, and then upstairs uh was aloft, and um they I don't know if they ever rented it out to anybody, but we would have parties up there.
- 18:30Gavin: But you could, you know, they had all the movies downstairs, so you could go upstairs and and watch the movies or whatever during the party.
- 18:38Gavin: But I I just remember um watching some of those again with other people and it didn't feel so scary.
- 18:46Gavin: Um, much like the Blair Witch Project, uh also growing up in small town Oklahoma, um we go out and just be out in the woods.
- 19:00Gavin: Um pasture parties pasture parties.
- 19:03Gavin: Yeah, you go I'm with you, like be out in the dark, like where the only light is the stars, because there was really no cell phones at the time, right?
- 19:14Gavin: So you didn't have that flashlight.
- 19:16Aaron: We we come from different generations, there was absolutely no cell phones when I was out there.
- 19:21Gavin: Um so yeah, I think um going back and watching some of those movies, I can see how silly and stupid they were, but there are some of them that's like, yeah, I I don't I don't know if I'd want to watch that by myself um and then go outside and be in the woods.
- 19:42Aaron: Yeah, I I mean now there are other movies that are shot in the first person, yeah, right?
- 19:47Aaron: And so like that doesn't that isn't startling, yeah.
- 19:51Aaron: Like when when the character runs away from the bad guy or the monster or whatever, like it doesn't feel the same when it's shot from outside as opposed to inside the first person.
- 20:03Aaron: Um, but now like my kids have seen that happen before.
- 20:06Aaron: Like that doesn't like that isn't groundbreaking kind of things anymore.
- 20:11Aaron: And it it it it saddens me, right?
- 20:14Aaron: As we're sitting here talking about this, I realize like the Exorcist was really old for me.
- 20:18Aaron: Like I was young when The Exorcist came out.
- 20:21Aaron: And thought it came out in the 40s.
- 20:23Aaron: It might have.
- 20:24Aaron: That's how young I was.
- 20:25Aaron: Um, but like it would have been a historical movie to some extent for you, right?
- 20:32Aaron: Like you're way younger than me.
- 20:33Aaron: Way younger.
- 20:34Aaron: I'm not way with I'm not way younger.
- 20:37Aaron: Um it takes more than one digit to count the difference in our age.
- 20:42Aaron: Pish posh.
- 20:45Aaron: All right, shall we talk whiskey though?
- 20:47Aaron: Yeah, let's talk whiskey.
- 20:48Aaron: Um, I mean, not that I don't enjoy the movie talk in a genre in which neither of us are qualified to talk.
- 20:54Aaron: Oh, oh, hold up.
- 20:55Aaron: I do want to I do want to do one thing.
- 20:58Aaron: When we started talking about um movies, it got me thinking about characters of movies.
- 21:05Aaron: And um, a friend of mine, Diane, from work, was gracious enough to lend to us, they're not bobbleheads, they don't actually bobble, but they are caricatures bobblehead-esque.
- 21:17Aaron: So she gave us the classic four guys, right?
- 21:21Aaron: Jason, Michael Myers, Freddie Krueger, and Ghostface.
- 21:26Aaron: Um, and so we wanted to say thank you, Diana.
- 21:29Aaron: Appreciate you.
- 21:31Aaron: Um, there is there is nobody I know that loves Halloween more than Diana.
- 21:36Gavin: No, definitely not.
- 21:38Aaron: Um she's had decorations up for about two months now.
- 21:40Aaron: Yeah, I think she keeps some of them out just year round.
- 21:43Aaron: She takes she takes some of them down for about a week and a half and then brings them back out.
- 21:49Aaron: She's ready for the next year.
- 21:50Aaron: Like she's all the all Halloween all the time.
- 21:55Aaron: Thank you.
- 21:58Gavin: It's great.
- 21:58Gavin: Uh Stock whiskey.
- 22:00Gavin: Sock whiskey.
- 22:01Gavin: Uh, my bottle.
- 22:02Gavin: I want to know what do you think about the nose on this?
- 22:06Gavin: Like, what are you getting?
- 22:08Aaron: So, obviously, the initial nosing in sit were much more powerful.
- 22:16Aaron: As we've sat here, talked, and kind of let it um breathe.
- 22:21Aaron: Take the edge off your palate a little bit and come back to it.
- 22:24Aaron: Um, I I wrote down two words, big and bold.
- 22:29Aaron: Lots of spiciness, cloves, cinnamon, maybe some nutmeg in there.
- 22:35Aaron: I a lot of baking spice kind of things going on.
- 22:39Gavin: Okay.
- 22:39Aaron: Um, as you co-taste it and come back, I actually get more sweetness on the nose.
- 22:47Aaron: Um, but again, not light sweetness.
- 22:50Aaron: This isn't light honey, this isn't white sugar.
- 22:53Aaron: I mean, this is dark, heavy, molasses, brown sugar kind of sweetness that I'm picking up on the nose.
- 23:01Gavin: Uh I agree.
- 23:03Gavin: I think to me, dark is a word that comes to mind.
- 23:08Gavin: I think there's uh dark cherry in there.
- 23:11Gavin: Um, I think that if there's such a thing as a dark caramel, like yeah, I I mean, like when you make sugars, yeah.
- 23:21Aaron: When you make candies, like how far into the um burnt realm do you get?
- 23:29Aaron: Like how how hot do you run your your syrups?
- 23:32Aaron: And they they turn into soft candies or hard candies, and and you get these kind of charred caramel notes.
- 23:38Aaron: I I absolutely know what you mean by dark caramel.
- 23:41Gavin: Um, I think you're right.
- 23:42Gavin: There's I put mint, I think the high rye.
- 23:45Gavin: I think there's there's mint to that.
- 23:48Gavin: And I I wrote it down.
- 23:53Gavin: Um, it just smelled like it was gonna be creamy to me.
- 23:57Gavin: There's almost like a creaminess that I would associate with it on the nose.
- 24:02Gavin: Do you feel like that tracks on the palate for you?
- 24:09Aaron: Yeah, I think a lot of that carries.
- 24:11Aaron: Um, on the palate, though, I get a fruit.
- 24:14Aaron: I get a dark cherry.
- 24:16Aaron: And you know what?
- 24:18Aaron: As soon as we took my first sip, I immediately thought back um the last time I tried a sip of stag.
- 24:30Aaron: Like has that dark, rich, high proof, got the bite on the palate, got that dark cherry.
- 24:39Aaron: It's not dark chocolate, it's not bitter like dark chocolate would be, but it's got a real rich, dark, chocolatey note.
- 24:50Aaron: Yeah.
- 24:50Aaron: When you say dark chocolate, you think of that like almost bitter cacao kind of thing.
- 24:55Aaron: And it's not that, it's still sweet, it's just sweet in a much darker way than like an MM would be.
- 25:03Gavin: I agree with that.
- 25:04Gavin: Um, I put cherry.
- 25:06Gavin: I didn't put dark cherry on this one, but I did put cherry.
- 25:08Gavin: Um, there's a butteriness to this, like it is viscous, it is creamy, um, there's it's it's velvety, if you will.
- 25:18Gavin: Like it's thick.
- 25:20Gavin: Um, much like what I get sometimes when I drink stag.
- 25:24Gavin: I do think that there is um a viscosity to that.
- 25:27Gavin: Um finish.
- 25:32Aaron: Yeah, so I not to sound like a broken record, but like dark brown sugar, molasses kind of shows up.
- 25:38Aaron: Um, here's where I think the oiliness really stands out to me.
- 25:42Aaron: Right?
- 25:42Aaron: Sometimes you take a sip of a whiskey, and while you're getting all of the sweet flavors, it's got a creaminess to it.
- 25:51Aaron: But as soon as you finish it, it immediately turns dry and you taste barrel.
- 25:56Aaron: This, exact opposite, this stays oily for so long and it just carries and carries, even still, like on the on the back of your palate, like it hasn't dried, right?
- 26:10Aaron: And so often whiskies get, in my opinion, over oaked, and that ultimately turns into a drying, almost acrid note of wood on the back end of the finish, which ultimately means you gotta go take another sip, right?
- 26:30Aaron: Like I do.
- 26:32Aaron: We've gotten into the finish to the point where I don't like it anymore.
- 26:35Aaron: Let me go put some more back on top.
- 26:36Aaron: But this, I don't I don't think you have to, right?
- 26:40Aaron: You can sit here for several minutes afterwards, still picking up some of that sweetness, still picking up some of that fruitiness and that spice.
- 26:49Aaron: I I wrote medium to long and then I scratched it out medium, right?
- 26:53Aaron: The longer I sit here, the more I realize the finish is longer than I thought it was.
- 26:58Gavin: Yeah, I put long, I think there it there's that oaky note.
- 27:05Gavin: Um, I think it's peppery.
- 27:10Gavin: You still get that rice spice.
- 27:12Gavin: Um, I also put hot, and maybe it's just because I'm a little warm in here.
- 27:18Aaron: But uh we haven't gotten to the cold part of the year here in Houston.
- 27:23Aaron: Yeah.
- 27:24Aaron: Um, we're still warm.
- 27:25Gavin: Yeah.
- 27:26Aaron: Um, yeah, I'm with you there.
- 27:27Aaron: I it kind of warms you from within.
- 27:30Aaron: Yeah, right?
- 27:31Gavin: It's radiating.
- 27:32Gavin: Um, but what caught my eye is as you were talking, and as much as we talked about the label, I didn't actually read uh the back label.
- 27:41Aaron: But don't admit that on the air.
- 27:43Aaron: Well, no.
- 27:44Aaron: This guy didn't do any of his research, he's just winging it every turn.
- 27:48Gavin: Winging it.
- 27:49Gavin: But what it says here is uh cast strength bourbon, cherries, and chocolate.
- 27:54Gavin: I mean, yeah.
- 27:55Aaron: I I sometimes marketing is way off.
- 27:59Aaron: Sometimes you take a sip and you're like, I don't know what bottle they were tasting when they put together the description, but I like both of those seem reasonable.
- 28:07Aaron: Yeah, do they put anything in there about big, bold, spicy with a long finish?
- 28:11Aaron: Because that's everything I got.
- 28:14Gavin: Uh creamy.
- 28:15Gavin: Yep.
- 28:17Gavin: Um they actually put finish of cacao, leather, applewood, enjoy meat, or with a drop of water.
- 28:28Aaron: This is this is what they refer to as quality entertainment.
- 28:32Aaron: Yes, watching Gavin read the link.
- 28:34Gavin: Read it here, let me get my spectrum.
- 28:36Aaron: And and I might point out, struggling to read on the dark side of the bottle.
- 28:42Gavin: What is this?
- 28:44Aaron: Hold on a second.
- 28:45Aaron: No, we need a number.
- 28:46Aaron: Oh, yes.
- 28:47Aaron: Do you have a number?
- 28:48Aaron: I've I've got a number to write down.
- 28:50Aaron: I haven't written it.
- 28:51Aaron: I haven't written it yet.
- 28:52Aaron: I know I need to go first.
- 28:53Aaron: Overachiever.
- 28:55Aaron: I'm gonna do it.
- 29:01Aaron: I'm gonna do something that's never been done before on this show.
- 29:04Aaron: Oh, geez.
- 29:04Aaron: We're in season three.
- 29:06Aaron: It's time to branch out, do something different.
- 29:11Aaron: You're gonna do a decimal, aren't you?
- 29:13Aaron: You son of a gun.
- 29:15Aaron: Don't now you're gonna do it just so that way I don't get to carry the honor.
- 29:18Aaron: I'll still actually.
- 29:20Gavin: I thought we had a decimal before.
- 29:22Gavin: Um no, no, we didn't.
- 29:24Gavin: Correct us if if we're wrong.
- 29:27Gavin: Jeez, I'm I'm struggling.
- 29:29Gavin: I'm struggling.
- 29:30Aaron: Go back.
- 29:30Aaron: Did Chad Taters give a decimal?
- 29:32Gavin: I don't know if Chad Taters gave us anything.
- 29:34Gavin: Oh, geez, that guy.
- 29:36Gavin: He took from us.
- 29:37Gavin: I was not gonna say.
- 29:38Gavin: He came here and drank our whiskey.
- 29:43Aaron: But he was kind enough to help fill in when I couldn't be here.
- 29:48Aaron: Yeah, yeah.
- 29:49Aaron: I I love finish your number.
- 29:51Aaron: Finish your number.
- 29:51Aaron: Come on.
- 29:52Aaron: All right.
- 29:55Aaron: We all love Chad Taters.
- 29:57Aaron: Yeah.
- 29:58Aaron: Except for Chad Tater stands for most of what we don't love.
- 30:02Aaron: But that's that's why we enjoy Chad Taters.
- 30:04Aaron: Yeah.
- 30:05Aaron: Uh in a in a time in which the world is divided, we have chosen to love our enemy.
- 30:13Aaron: That's right.
- 30:14Aaron: That's right.
- 30:15Aaron: All right.
- 30:16Aaron: My number, the hard part was deciding between two numbers, so I split the difference.
- 30:22Aaron: We are 87.5.
- 30:25Aaron: I really, really like this one.
- 30:29Aaron: This is an excellent bourbon.
- 30:32Aaron: Yeah.
- 30:33Aaron: Yeah.
- 30:34Gavin: Yeah.
- 30:35Gavin: I'm glad it's in the collection now.
- 30:37Gavin: I I'm very close to that.
- 30:40Gavin: And I was struggling uh between a couple numbers myself.
- 30:44Gavin: Uh just trying to figure out how to make the letters or the numbers?
- 30:47Gavin: Yeah, yeah.
- 30:49Aaron: It's hard.
- 30:49Aaron: It's a new pen, you know.
- 30:51Aaron: It happens.
- 30:52Aaron: He's normally left-handed.
- 30:53Aaron: It's very hard to do with this, right?
- 30:55Aaron: Um ambidextrous.
- 30:57Aaron: Amidex.
- 30:58Aaron: Amba.
- 30:59Aaron: Ambidextress.
- 31:01Gavin: Whatever it is.
- 31:02Aaron: Amber, one of each.
- 31:03Aaron: Yeah, I like it.
- 31:04Aaron: I don't know if that's what that means in Latin, but it sounded good though, didn't it?
- 31:08Gavin: You could have fooled me.
- 31:09Gavin: Ooh, geez.
- 31:10Gavin: It's alright.
- 31:11Aaron: It's alright.
- 31:11Aaron: It's alright.
- 31:12Gavin: Get your elbows.
- 31:13Gavin: This is my elbow space.
- 31:14Gavin: Uh, I I put this at an 86.
- 31:17Gavin: I think it's too low.
- 31:20Gavin: I it to me, this is uh it's really good.
- 31:24Gavin: It's solid.
- 31:25Gavin: Um I think it drinks almost hotter than it than it is for being 117.1.
- 31:32Aaron: Actually, I actually thought the opposite.
- 31:33Aaron: Really?
- 31:34Aaron: Yeah.
- 31:34Aaron: I as rough as that first sniff I took was, I was surprised at how I'm not saying it drinks soft.
- 31:44Aaron: It's big, it's bold, it's it's got all the things you expect it to be, but it wasn't over the top like I was afraid it was going to be.
- 31:51Aaron: Maybe that's just the difference between expectations and reality, not just reality.
- 31:58Aaron: Well, there we go.
- 32:00Aaron: All right.
- 32:00Aaron: 87 and a half for Aaron, 86 for Gavin for Farmlands.
- 32:08Aaron: Filmlands spirits, filmlands spirits, the Moonlight Mayhem Extended Cut.
- 32:16Aaron: Yeah, I was gonna say cast strength, but cast strength.
- 32:20Aaron: No, no, I like it.
- 32:22Aaron: Alright, shall we go to bottle number two?
- 32:24Gavin: Let's let's do it, and you know what that means.
- 32:27Gavin: You get to pour me.
- 32:30Gavin: Oh, is this your oh, is this your favorite part of the episode?
- 32:33Gavin: My favorite.
- 32:34Gavin: Now I was gonna say bourbon, but I don't think we're sipping bourbon anymore.
- 32:38Aaron: No, so when posed with the same question of a Halloween-themed whiskey, a Halloween-y.
- 32:49Aaron: A Halloween-ish whiskey.
- 32:52Aaron: Um, I said, what is more quintessentially Halloween than the super villain bad guy monster?
- 33:02Aaron: Right?
- 33:03Aaron: The creature from the black lagoon.
- 33:06Aaron: Hold on, hold on, hold on.
- 33:07Aaron: Or why does a monster have to be the bad guy?
- 33:11Aaron: That's how it works.
- 33:12Aaron: That's what monsters are.
- 33:13Aaron: Are you claiming that monsters are just misunderstood?
- 33:15Aaron: Yes, yeah, you're wrong.
- 33:17Aaron: All right, feelings too.
- 33:19Aaron: I went and got us a bottle of compass boxes, the peat monster.
- 33:25Aaron: All right, so Compass Bot Peat Monster is a blended malt scotch.
- 33:33Aaron: Gavin, tell the lovely viewers at home what blended malt scotch means.
- 33:41Gavin: Blended malt scotch.
- 33:43Gavin: Well, it's a scotch that is a malt and it's been blended.
- 33:48Aaron: Yeah, so the blend is all single malts.
- 33:53Aaron: So there's no single grains.
- 33:55Aaron: This is not a blended scotch, this is a blended malt scotch.
- 34:00Aaron: All right, so this clocks in at 46% ABV for those converting to American.
- 34:07Aaron: That is 92 proof.
- 34:08Aaron: This is a much lower step down.
- 34:10Aaron: Um, this bottle, not surprisingly, when you take a look at it, no artificial colors, no uh chill filtering.
- 34:19Aaron: Looks like a white wine.
- 34:22Aaron: Yeah, no, does not smell like white wine, does not smell like looks like white wine.
- 34:26Aaron: So, one of the fun things about compass boxes, compass boxes, I'll say relatively transparent about their blending.
- 34:34Aaron: And by that I mean they actually give you the breakdown of each release of their blended whiskeys, and that's all they do is blend, but they give you a breakdown of where that whiskey came from.
- 34:49Aaron: So this came, this actually is a combination of six different releases or um runs from a total of they listed as three distillers.
- 35:08Aaron: We actually know it's more than three, but I'll explain what that means.
- 35:11Aaron: So on on the website, you can go to it, it gives you a little pie chart that shows you what percentage comes from where and what the flavor profile they were drawing from that one.
- 35:22Aaron: So 46% of this is Caolh ila uh listed as a refill hogshead, picked for its sweet smoke.
- 35:33Aaron: The next largest percentage is 35% from a place called the Williamson Distillery.
- 35:42Aaron: Again, refilled hogsheads picked for its maritime and its um smoke flavors.
- 35:51Aaron: I want to come back to where Williamson Distillery is here in just a second.
- 35:55Aaron: Number three largest, 14%, also a coal ila, again a refill hogshead, different run, picked for its clean smoke flavors.
- 36:08Aaron: Then we get down to the small percentages, three percent Coal ila selected for its delicate smoke flavor, then we get down to the subtle ones.
- 36:19Aaron: 1% Caol ila selected for its fruit flavors, and then 1% what they refer to as the Highland malt blend.
- 36:30Aaron: This is why when I said it's um three distilleries, the Highland malt blend is more than one, so we know it's more than three, but that makes up the remainder with its clove and spice flavors.
- 36:44Aaron: That one specifically, proprietary two compass box.
- 36:49Aaron: They have blended multiple whiskeys from a couple different places that have then been aged in custom French oak, heavily toasted barrels.
- 36:59Aaron: Oh, that's their 11 herbs and spices, right?
- 37:04Aaron: Everything else is kind of building the body.
- 37:06Aaron: That's the thing, like this is our signature that we put into it.
- 37:09Aaron: So you don't really know what all of that 1% is made of.
- 37:13Aaron: Now, I want to go back and touch just for a moment on Williamson Distillery.
- 37:18Aaron: So, Williamson Distillery is listed as an Islay single malt.
- 37:22Aaron: Okay.
- 37:23Aaron: It doesn't take long to run down the list of Islay distilleries and realize there is no Williamson distillery.
- 37:29Aaron: So, for those who don't know, we need to do this at some point.
- 37:34Aaron: We need to do a Laphroaig episode.
- 37:37Aaron: The Laphroaig episode, at one point, when the initial owner passed away, he bequeathed the distillery to his assistant, and her name was Williamson.
- 37:53Aaron: She kept it as Laphroaig for all of the standard product.
- 38:00Aaron: But the implication here is that when they call it the Williamson Distillery, it is special releases that are pulled aside out of Laphroaig.
- 38:10Aaron: So this is predominantly run down the list, 46%, 35%, 14, 3%, and 1% all Islay single malts.
- 38:22Aaron: That means 99% of this bottle is an Islay single bolt.
- 38:27Aaron: Right?
- 38:28Aaron: With only 1% being Highland, that adds some level of other complexity.
- 38:33Aaron: Not that there isn't complexity already in the Islay whiskies.
- 38:37Gavin: There's that's that's a lot of herbs and spices.
- 38:41Aaron: Yes.
- 38:42Aaron: Yeah, no, it's I think as soon as you put your nose in the glass, you understand that the vast majority of this is from Islay, right?
- 38:50Gavin: But what would be fun and interesting is taking a bottle of this um and comparing it to a different bottle to see how well the herbs and spices.
- 39:06Aaron: Oh, are you saying a different peat monster from a different year's release?
- 39:11Aaron: Yeah.
- 39:11Aaron: Because those those percentages vary slightly, right?
- 39:14Aaron: As they as they go through and blend.
- 39:16Aaron: So each time they come back to it, it is a slightly different.
- 39:20Gavin: Okay, all right.
- 39:20Aaron: So it is so you'll see you'll see that with a lot of Compass Box releases.
- 39:24Aaron: Um, some of their stuff, like um their hedonism release, it has a different label from year to year, so you can keep tabs on it.
- 39:31Aaron: Some of their others um are less clearly defined as to which year it's from, but every time they kind of create a new batch, so to speak, um, they're shooting back towards the flavor profile.
- 39:46Aaron: They're not just replicating the recipe and hoping it tastes the same for sure.
- 39:51Aaron: Um, and what I'll say is I'm incredibly biased.
- 39:56Aaron: I enjoy most of what Compass Box has has done that I've tried.
- 40:00Aaron: Um one of the one of the more common characteristics of a blended scotch, right, or a blended malt scotch is it's very budget-friendly.
- 40:14Aaron: Now, this one happens to be one of the more budget-friendly bottles from Compass Box.
- 40:19Aaron: A bottle of uh Peat Monster runs somewhere around $60.
- 40:22Aaron: Um, but they have blended scotches and blended malts um scotches that run in the upper $200 to $300 a bottle range, some of which are incredibly um exquisite.
- 40:41Aaron: So this kind of breaks that trend to say, well, yeah, like if single malts are too expensive, go get a blend.
- 40:49Aaron: Not all blends are cheap, right?
- 40:51Gavin: Like, this is not all blends are created equally.
- 40:56Aaron: This guy should work in advertising or sales.
- 40:59Aaron: So while we while we while we taste this, we talked we talked a lot about movies, and I don't want to diminish horror films and Halloween movies, because I think a lot of them are are great movies.
- 41:15Aaron: However, your favorites, yeah, get it.
- 41:18Aaron: No, no, however, part of what makes a movie scary is the music in the movie.
- 41:28Aaron: That's how you know something bad's about to happen, right?
- 41:31Aaron: The music changes, like it builds suspense.
- 41:34Aaron: So I got to thinking about Halloween songs.
- 41:38Aaron: Okay, so what I did is I put together a list of a handful of Halloween songs and whittled it down until I felt I had got to what I deem to be the four most iconic Halloween songs.
- 41:57Aaron: Your choices.
- 41:58Aaron: My choice my four.
- 41:59Aaron: Okay.
- 42:00Aaron: Here's what I want you to do.
- 42:02Aaron: I will give you the four.
- 42:03Aaron: I want you to rank them in order from fourth to number one.
- 42:10Aaron: All right.
- 42:11Aaron: Okay.
- 42:11Aaron: All right.
- 42:12Aaron: You got a pen handy?
- 42:13Aaron: I'm gonna give you these songs.
- 42:15Aaron: I don't think you could ever, ever, ever talk about Halloween or go to a Halloween party and the song The Monster Mash by Bobby Boris Pickett's and the Crypt Keepers not play on the radio.
- 42:33Aaron: All right, that is as quintessential of Halloween song as I think you'll ever get.
- 42:39Aaron: Doesn't mean it's the best, but it's certainly quintessential Halloween.
- 42:44Gavin: Okay.
- 42:45Aaron: All right, what's next?
- 42:46Aaron: I don't know if I ever hear this song any other time of the year.
- 42:52Aaron: Somebody's Watching Me by Rockwell.
- 42:55Aaron: Okay.
- 42:57Aaron: Right?
- 42:58Aaron: You know which song I'm talking about?
- 42:59Aaron: This is the chance.
- 43:00Aaron: Gavin doesn't know the list, so there's a chance Gavin goes, I don't know that.
- 43:03Aaron: And my fear is you're gonna ask me to sing it.
- 43:06Aaron: Well, maybe.
- 43:09Aaron: Also, a song that you just never seem to hear any other time of the year, Werewolves of London by Warren Zevon.
- 43:19Aaron: Right?
- 43:22Aaron: Okay, and this is where it starts to get a little sturdy in my list.
- 43:27Aaron: Like I had a hard time pardon this down to four because there's a bunch of them that to me like that feels Halloween.
- 43:35Aaron: I don't know if this one feels quite as Halloween because you hear this song Beyond Halloween, but I cannot imagine a list of great Halloween party songs not playing Michael Jackson's Thriller.
- 43:52Aaron: Yep.
- 43:53Aaron: Those are your four.
- 43:56Aaron: All right Monster Mash, somebody's watching.
- 43:59Aaron: Me, We're Wolves in London and Thriller.
- 44:03Aaron: Alright, so we're gonna stop.
- 44:05Aaron: I want you to give this some thought.
- 44:07Aaron: While you give this thought, I'm just going to share some of the other ones that did not quite make the cut.
- 44:12Aaron: Okay.
- 44:13Aaron: I want to give you chance.
- 44:14Aaron: Like, contemplate this, right?
- 44:15Aaron: I don't want this.
- 44:16Aaron: This is this is not just right off the top of your head.
- 44:18Aaron: Give this some serious consideration.
- 44:19Aaron: I wish you would have given me headphones.
- 44:21Aaron: Oh, so you want to hear this?
- 44:23Aaron: Yeah, so I could listen to it.
- 44:24Aaron: The Ghostbusters theme song.
- 44:27Aaron: Ghostbusters is a classic Halloween movie.
- 44:29Aaron: That one feels like it it needs to be recognized.
- 44:33Aaron: Um, also Purple People Eaters.
- 44:38Aaron: As another song.
- 44:39Aaron: The Purple People Eaters.
- 44:41Aaron: Oh, okay.
- 44:41Aaron: That's another one that you never hear any other time of the year.
- 44:44Aaron: Also, Love Potion number nine is another only seems to come out at Halloween.
- 44:51Aaron: Um songs that you hear at other times, but still remind me of Halloween.
- 45:00Aaron: Black Magic Woman from Santana, and the Time Warp from the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
- 45:08Aaron: And then I think everybody knows.
- 45:12Aaron: Right?
- 45:16Aaron: Adam's Family is a classic Halloween party song.
- 45:23Aaron: So, that all being said, those were my honorable mentions.
- 45:28Aaron: I think they all deserve to make a list.
- 45:30Aaron: If you're putting together your Halloween party playlist, start with those 10.
- 45:36Aaron: Then let Spotify or Apple run wild with the rest of the night.
- 45:40Aaron: But that those have to be on your list in my mind.
- 45:43Aaron: All right, question becomes which one's the best of those four, yeah.
- 45:50Gavin: You want me to start with number four?
- 45:52Gavin: Yeah, yeah.
- 45:53Gavin: Well.
- 45:53Gavin: And then count down.
- 45:55Aaron: Where do you want me to start?
- 45:56Aaron: You you decide how you want to do this.
- 45:58Aaron: This is your show.
- 45:59Aaron: All right.
- 45:59Aaron: Do you do this like Miss America where you get all the way up to number one and number two, and then you pick number one, and everybody no one cares about number two?
- 46:07Aaron: Like if I had ten, I might do that, but I got four, so it's kind of hard to do.
- 46:11Aaron: I've always thought you should come out and say number three, number two, and then you have two left.
- 46:24Aaron: And that way, when you announce the winner, so you did three, two, one, and nobody ever mentions number four because no one gives a shit.
- 46:30Aaron: It's the fourth place.
- 46:31Aaron: You sorry, you were the biggest loser of the group.
- 46:34Gavin: Well, if there was five, you do it your way, buddy.
- 46:37Gavin: I'm gonna do it my way.
- 46:38Gavin: Uh, I'm gonna start.
- 46:40Gavin: I'm gonna start with number two.
- 46:43Gavin: Okay.
- 46:44Gavin: So I'm gonna go all kind of crazy on you.
- 46:46Gavin: All right, number two.
- 46:47Gavin: Number two.
- 46:48Gavin: Somebody's watching me.
- 46:50Aaron: Oh, that's a great one.
- 46:53Aaron: All right.
- 46:54Aaron: Why is that one number two?
- 46:58Aaron: Or do you want to give them all and then give us a reason?
- 47:00Gavin: Yeah, yeah.
- 47:00Gavin: I'm gonna give I'm gonna give it all.
- 47:02Gavin: I'm gonna give it, I'm gonna give it all.
- 47:04Gavin: Give it its all.
- 47:05Gavin: Give it its all.
- 47:06Gavin: Give give it give it your all.
- 47:09Gavin: I don't know, whatever, whatever.
- 47:10Gavin: All right.
- 47:10Gavin: Uh, so that's number two.
- 47:12Gavin: Number four, the monster mash.
- 47:21Aaron: Your list.
- 47:22Gavin: Your list, your list, my list.
- 47:24Gavin: I don't know how I'd have put it, but it's your list.
- 47:26Gavin: My list.
- 47:26Gavin: Number three is werewolves of London.
- 47:36Aaron: Well, now we know number one.
- 47:39Gavin: Number one, Thriller.
- 47:41Gavin: So you mentioned, uh, I mean, Thriller gets played all throughout the year, but obviously around this time, it's everywhere.
- 47:53Gavin: Um, we have a good buddy, uh Dillard, who like when I think of Thriller, I think of Dillard.
- 48:01Aaron: He the first kind of it's a song about the walking dead.
- 48:06Aaron: It does not bode well for Dillard.
- 48:08Gavin: No, Dillard dresses up as Michael Jackson, and it is phenomenal.
- 48:12Gavin: So I can't help it.
- 48:14Gavin: Can't help but think about Dillard.
- 48:17Aaron: Does he dress up as Thriller Michael Jackson?
- 48:19Aaron: Like with the curly hair and the zipper jacket.
- 48:22Aaron: Yeah, he's got the whole red bit.
- 48:24Gavin: Yeah, it is he and the glove.
- 48:28Aaron: He's got the glove.
- 48:29Aaron: Dude, I don't think the glove was in Thriller.
- 48:32Gavin: Was it?
- 48:32Gavin: I don't I don't know if it is or not, but he's he's definitely gonna have to go back and watch it.
- 48:36Gavin: You're just gonna have to go talk to the somebody's gonna tell us.
- 48:38Gavin: Somebody tell us um somebody's watching me.
- 48:42Gavin: I think that is also uh something that gets played fairly often throughout the radio.
- 48:49Gavin: Uh for the young whippersnappers out there.
- 48:53Gavin: There is a thing called the radio.
- 48:55Aaron: Um it was Spotify before Spotify.
- 48:59Gavin: Yeah.
- 49:00Gavin: Um, but Werewolves of London and the Monster Mash, those really, I feel like only get played right around Halloween.
- 49:08Gavin: Right.
- 49:09Aaron: Monster Mash is shtick fully, right?
- 49:15Aaron: Um like it was it was written almost as a comedic song, right?
- 49:21Aaron: Like I understand that.
- 49:22Aaron: Like nobody's sitting around on a Thursday afternoon in February listening to the Monster Mash.
- 49:31Gavin: Are you sure?
- 49:32Gavin: Could hey?
- 49:33Gavin: I'm pretty sure.
- 49:34Gavin: I'm pretty sure.
- 49:35Gavin: Yeah, maybe Miss Diana enjoys a little monster mash on her playlist.
- 49:41Aaron: I I I could see that.
- 49:44Aaron: I won't I won't I won't lie.
- 49:46Aaron: I could see that.
- 49:48Aaron: I could absolutely see that.
- 49:50Aaron: All right, I have a question for you.
- 49:52Gavin: Okay, oh a a rebuttal question.
- 49:54Gavin: A rebuttal.
- 49:55Gavin: All right, um, so we talked about Halloween specific kind of songs, right?
- 50:02Gavin: Time.
- 50:02Gavin: Are there other types of music or songs or genres that you tend to listen to right around this time of year?
- 50:11Gavin: Are you the kind of guy that's like, oh, I think of um pumpkins and spice and everything nice?
- 50:19Gavin: And uh No, I'm more of a snails and puppy dog tails kind of guy.
- 50:23Aaron: Okay.
- 50:24Aaron: Alright.
- 50:25Aaron: Snails and puppy dog tails.
- 50:28Gavin: Um, like if you're if you're going out.
- 50:32Aaron: Is I'm gonna say this.
- 50:34Aaron: Is Halloween music a genre that you listen to building up towards Halloween?
- 50:46Aaron: Like Christmas music, you will listen to weeks, if not months in advance, working up towards the excitement of Christmas Day.
- 50:56Aaron: Almost to the point that it makes Christmas Day seem what somewhat anticlimactic because you have spent so much time preparing for it.
- 51:03Aaron: It gets here and you're like, yeah, I've already done all the Christmas stuff.
- 51:07Aaron: I don't ever listen to Halloween music until you get to the party.
- 51:16Aaron: Like, that's kind of the fun.
- 51:19Aaron: Um, you know, like you decorate in your yard in your house and you have Christmas carols playing, right?
- 51:26Aaron: You play Christmas music while you put up the tree and you hang the garden.
- 51:30Aaron: Like, I don't put on Halloween music while we're stringing the the cobwebs across the bushes out in front of the house.
- 51:40Aaron: What you don't maybe I should.
- 51:43Aaron: I here's the here's the truth.
- 51:47Aaron: There is not so much in Houston, but there is a change that tends to happen in the month of October most everywhere else in the country, and it gets cooler, and it gets like grab a sweater, get your jackets out, um, leaves have started to fall, you're out right.
- 52:08Aaron: Like, there's a whole lot of stuff that happens, and Halloween is kind of that precursor to the holidays.
- 52:15Aaron: I say the holidays, Thanksgiving and Christmas, right?
- 52:20Aaron: So, in that, that does build a level of excitement.
- 52:25Aaron: I'm just not the big Halloween celebrator, right?
- 52:33Aaron: Like, we don't decorate the yard great big, like we then do.
- 52:37Aaron: No, no, this is just run everyday run-of-the-mill stuff.
- 52:41Aaron: We just keep this up all year long.
- 52:42Aaron: Yeah.
- 52:43Aaron: I the so I don't know as if there is a music genre that warrants it.
- 52:49Aaron: Other than what I'll say is we are obviously heading in towards cooler weather.
- 52:54Aaron: So when there's a crispness to the air, like you can't help but think of like bowls of chili or warm warm meals, and the smell of a campfire is coming, right?
- 53:09Aaron: Like that kind of stuff gets you excited.
- 53:11Aaron: So I don't know as if it's music specifically for me, but it certainly harkens in um a season of the year that I'm really excited to get to.
- 53:23Aaron: It's the pre-party to the party.
- 53:25Aaron: It's the pre-poor before the episode.
- 53:27Aaron: Yeah.
- 53:28Gavin: That's Halloween.
- 53:29Gavin: Starts with death.
- 53:31Aaron: Halloween, the pre-poor of the From Death to Life.
- 53:36Aaron: Yeah, I have you ever celebrated not all Hallows Eve, but all Hallows Day?
- 53:46Aaron: Do you ever get up on November 1st and go celebrate people who are not dead?
- 53:53Gavin: Yes, actually.
- 53:54Gavin: I mean people that are born on November 1st.
- 53:57Gavin: It's their birthday.
- 53:58Aaron: So yes.
- 53:59Aaron: Oh, do you know somebody specifically that has November 1st birthday?
- 54:02Gavin: Yes, absolutely.
- 54:03Gavin: All right.
- 54:04Gavin: Family.
- 54:05Aaron: No, that helps.
- 54:06Gavin: That helps.
- 54:07Aaron: That helps.
- 54:08Aaron: It's gonna be sad though when they die because you're like, we can't celebrate this anymore.
- 54:12Aaron: This is the live day.
- 54:13Aaron: Yesterday was the dead day.
- 54:16Gavin: Uh all right.
- 54:18Gavin: Shall we talk whiskey?
- 54:20Gavin: Sure, why not?
- 54:22Gavin: Did we already go past it?
- 54:24Gavin: Are you are you are you ready?
- 54:25Aaron: Are you you want to come back?
- 54:27Aaron: No, I didn't write much down, but I I I've got I've got ideas.
- 54:30Aaron: You got ideas?
- 54:31Aaron: I can figure this out.
- 54:32Aaron: All right.
- 54:33Aaron: My bottle.
- 54:34Aaron: Your bottle?
- 54:35Aaron: Your bottle.
- 54:36Aaron: My my bottle.
- 54:39Aaron: Your bottle.
- 54:40Aaron: All right.
- 54:40Aaron: Yeah, so start with the nose.
- 54:43Aaron: Gavin likes to change up stuff, so I just want to make sure.
- 54:46Aaron: I know it's season three.
- 54:49Aaron: All rules are off.
- 54:50Aaron: We even debated switching seats just to throw stuff.
- 54:53Aaron: Like, we're not doing any of that.
- 54:55Aaron: Traditional tasting.
- 54:57Aaron: Nose palate finish.
- 55:00Gavin: I was gonna shave my head and everything.
- 55:03Aaron: Oh my god, how how fun would that be?
- 55:05Aaron: I come in with a red beard and red hair, and you that sounds like too much work.
- 55:11Aaron: Never mind.
- 55:11Gavin: Yeah.
- 55:12Gavin: All right.
- 55:12Gavin: On the nose.
- 55:14Gavin: Uh to me.
- 55:15Gavin: Obviously, compass box.
- 55:18Gavin: I already know where it's gonna be.
- 55:21Gavin: Um, so it's obviously got a smoke flavor to it.
- 55:25Gavin: Um, there's a sweetness, uh salty, kind of briny note on the nose.
- 55:35Gavin: Um, I think there's also maybe a bit of um almost like a lemon custard.
- 55:42Aaron: Yeah, I was trying to I it's certainly citrus.
- 55:46Aaron: And I was trying to decide what it is.
- 55:48Aaron: Yeah, I think it's like on the nose, I think I think I'm with you.
- 55:51Aaron: I think it's more lemon, but I'm not positive that's how it tastes and finish.
- 55:56Aaron: Yeah.
- 55:57Aaron: That's a teaser.
- 55:58Aaron: That's a teaser for the the next three minutes.
- 56:00Gavin: Yeah, I would I'm gonna keep my mouth shut on that.
- 56:04Gavin: But um so I nosed it and then I took a sip of it, and then I came back to nose it.
- 56:10Gavin: And when I went back, I wrote the pecan goo of a pecan pie.
- 56:18Aaron: Oh, you think it's that sweet?
- 56:20Gavin: Yeah.
- 56:20Gavin: Like nose it, taste it, and go back to the nose.
- 56:26Gavin: There it is very sweet to me.
- 56:33Aaron: Yeah, I there's a nuttiness to it.
- 56:35Aaron: I'll give you that.
- 56:36Aaron: I don't know if I'd say quite pecan pie goo sweet, but um I can come closer to saying the first one was more pecan pie goo than this one.
- 56:47Aaron: Really?
- 56:48Aaron: Yeah, yeah.
- 56:48Aaron: Uh so I I'm with you.
- 56:51Aaron: I think you get a citrusy note.
- 56:55Aaron: There is a briny maritime nose to it.
- 56:58Aaron: Obviously, peat and smoke on there.
- 57:01Aaron: I will say lighter peat, um, more floral peat kind of things and less rough smoke.
- 57:10Aaron: Um yeah, I the nose to me, the nose to me is very consistent with the palette and finish as it moves forward, but there is subtle differences that happen with each move, right?
- 57:24Aaron: I not completely different, but not dissimilar from the concept of the first bottle, right?
- 57:30Aaron: Where Moonlight Mayhem like had a unifying theme that showed up in the nose, the palette, and the finish.
- 57:37Aaron: There were subtle variations, but it tracked collectively.
- 57:41Aaron: I think this, I think this bottle tracks through the sniff, sip, and savor.
- 57:50Gavin: Yeah, I I agree with it.
- 57:52Gavin: Um I think you said floral.
- 57:56Gavin: I put fruity.
- 57:57Gavin: I think there's a fruitiness on the palette.
- 58:00Aaron: Which kind of fruit though?
- 58:01Aaron: Are you thinking like light, like apricot pear kind of fruit?
- 58:05Gavin: I put like um maybe it's more of a stone fruit.
- 58:13Aaron: Kind of like almost a not fully ripened peach.
- 58:19Aaron: Like a white peach.
- 58:21Aaron: Yeah.
- 58:22Aaron: Alright.
- 58:23Aaron: Um, I'm with you there.
- 58:24Aaron: I I I'd have said pear or like a a light apple, not red delicious, not tart like a green, but like some one of those, I don't know, pick one of the 43 varieties at the grocery store that's somewhat in the middle, right?
- 58:42Aaron: Fuji or gala or something like that.
- 58:44Aaron: Green Smith.
- 58:45Aaron: Um something crisp.
- 58:48Aaron: Honey crisp.
- 58:48Aaron: Oh, the honey crisp, yeah.
- 58:49Aaron: That that kind of like it's got some sweetness, but yet it's still got a little bit of tartness.
- 58:54Aaron: A little bit of kind of this and a little bit of that.
- 58:56Gavin: And in betweener, yeah, I for the Halloweener.
- 59:00Aaron: In betweener for the Halloweener.
- 59:02Aaron: Um the to me, I get like orange marmalade.
- 59:11Aaron: Wow, okay.
- 59:12Aaron: On the palette, yeah, like especially as it turns into the finish, like that that kind of sharp citrusy of like orange peel, right?
- 59:24Aaron: Like that you get in like think English marmalade, right?
- 59:28Aaron: That has the little bits of orange peel in it.
- 59:30Aaron: Um, that's got that kind of bite, that citrusy, but yet still got a bit of a sweetness to it.
- 59:36Aaron: Um that's good stuff.
- 59:41Gavin: Yeah.
- 59:41Gavin: On the finish, it's I wrote lingers, but it does, it's not like a long linger.
- 59:50Aaron: I think it's it's probably more of a medium compared to I think linger is the right term.
- 59:57Aaron: I think long was the right term for film land.
- 1:00:01Aaron: Yeah, that bottle was big, bold, and flavorful all the way through.
- 1:00:06Aaron: Yeah, this lingers, like there's a distinct flavor, and then it kind of fades and it doesn't go away, it just lingers, right?
- 1:00:14Aaron: Like I think I think that's a fair way to put it.
- 1:00:17Aaron: All right.
- 1:00:18Aaron: Um, I get I get I still get a little bit of orange peel, I still get a little bit of fruit sweetness.
- 1:00:27Aaron: Obviously, there's I to me this is more like heavy heather kind of peat than maybe grassy peat.
- 1:00:41Gavin: Okay, right?
- 1:00:43Aaron: I and when I say that that there is a sweet smoke to this, right?
- 1:00:48Aaron: Um, if you've ever stood out next to the camp campfire or next to the smoker or getting your barbecue going or whatever, like some smokes have this very sharp acrid kind of note, like if you've ever stood next to a mesquite fire, like that it's it's a rough kind of bite that comes from that smoke.
- 1:01:10Aaron: This has much more of a soft wood, um, like like fruit wood, so like apple or pear, something like that, right?
- 1:01:18Aaron: That it's a dainty smoke, yeah.
- 1:01:20Aaron: A lady smoke, if you will.
- 1:01:22Gavin: Yeah, like it's it's not gonna punch you in the face, but it's it's there, but it's it's fruity, it's sweet, it's a softer smoke.
- 1:01:33Gavin: Uh dainty.
- 1:01:35Gavin: Um, I I agree with that.
- 1:01:39Gavin: I think I think well, I'm not ready to put a number.
- 1:01:43Gavin: I'll put a number to it.
- 1:01:44Gavin: I've got a number, you got a number of it.
- 1:01:46Gavin: All right.
- 1:01:46Gavin: Uh to me, I've owned a bottle or some of the peat monster.
- 1:01:55Gavin: I think I've only owned this.
- 1:01:56Aaron: Is not my first bottle.
- 1:01:57Aaron: I should immediately know this is at least my third or fourth bottle.
- 1:02:00Gavin: I think I've only owned one, but um, I've enjoyed Peat Monster.
- 1:02:04Gavin: I enjoyed almost everything that Compass Box comes out with.
- 1:02:07Gavin: I put it as a 91.
- 1:02:09Gavin: Um that's not kind of love.
- 1:02:11Gavin: That's really love.
- 1:02:12Gavin: That's like I I want you in my glass, and I'll put my mouth to it.
- 1:02:21Aaron: Mom, stop watching.
- 1:02:22Aaron: Mom, stop watching.
- 1:02:23Aaron: We made it further this time in an episode before I had to tell my mom to shut it off.
- 1:02:28Aaron: But here we are.
- 1:02:29Aaron: Okay.
- 1:02:30Aaron: For me, I like it.
- 1:02:36Aaron: Is it right home and tell my parents about how amazing the whiskey I had was?
- 1:02:42Aaron: No.
- 1:02:42Aaron: I'm in an 84.
- 1:02:44Aaron: It's absolute, it's an absolute fun bottle to have in the collection.
- 1:02:49Aaron: Here's my here's the reason I give it an 84.
- 1:02:54Aaron: Oh, you said 84, I think you said 94.
- 1:02:56Aaron: Oh, no, no, 84.
- 1:02:58Aaron: Oh, okay.
- 1:02:58Aaron: At 84, that comes from at $60, this tastes like Islay.
- 1:03:05Aaron: And it it's a good representation of a tasty Islay.
- 1:03:10Aaron: That any single malt you would buy from Islay would cost you $20 to $30 more per bottle.
- 1:03:17Aaron: Right?
- 1:03:18Aaron: So this is a budget friendlier version of Islay.
- 1:03:24Aaron: But it's still not a $30 blend.
- 1:03:29Aaron: Right?
- 1:03:29Aaron: This isn't a monkey shoulder, this isn't uh Scrabbles or Shieldaig or whatever insert big box retailer's house brand here that just says Islay single vault, right?
- 1:03:46Aaron: Like it's not, it's not there.
- 1:03:48Aaron: Um this is the kind of whiskey that I wouldn't feel bad passing the bottle around the campfire.
- 1:03:57Aaron: Doesn't cost a fortune.
- 1:03:59Aaron: Um, but this isn't uh crack this one open to celebrate the promotion either, right?
- 1:04:04Aaron: Like to me, you start getting in the 90s, that's like that that's celebration level.
- 1:04:09Aaron: That's a hey guys, I got a hell of a deal.
- 1:04:12Aaron: You guys got to get over and try this, right?
- 1:04:14Aaron: Kind of thing, or you you text your buddies and you're like, man, you guys gotta come over tomorrow.
- 1:04:19Aaron: I I've got something fun to share.
- 1:04:21Aaron: I I don't know if it's quite there for me.
- 1:04:23Gavin: For me, when I think about like a when it says peat monster, I think it scares people a little bit.
- 1:04:31Aaron: I I absolutely agree that the name is slightly misleading because it's not as knock your teeth out, smoky peaty as I thought it would be when I first tried it, right?
- 1:04:43Aaron: Like I having had a bottle before, I kind of knew what we were getting into on this one.
- 1:04:47Aaron: But yeah, standing in the standing in the store looking at this one and be like Peat Monster.
- 1:04:52Aaron: I don't I don't know about one called the Peat Monster.
- 1:04:54Aaron: Yeah there's a there's another brand called the Big Smoke or Smoke Head.
- 1:04:58Aaron: Smoke something, yeah.
- 1:04:59Aaron: And you look at it and you're like, it's got a skull on it.
- 1:05:02Aaron: It better be really smoky the way they've marketed it, right?
- 1:05:06Aaron: Um, I'm always hesitant to pull the trigger on something that feels like so overhyped market-wise, I'm like, I feel like it's gonna be a letdown every time.
- 1:05:15Gavin: Yeah.
- 1:05:16Gavin: To me, when I think about smoky peaty scotches,
- 1:05:21Aaron: Smoky peaks,
- 1:05:22Gavin: smotey peats.
- 1:05:22Gavin: Gotcha.
- 1:05:23Gavin: Um, I I love them, but also knowing where we live, I'm not gonna drink that all year round.
- 1:05:31Gavin: This is something that even though it's got the peat, it's sweet.
- 1:05:35Aaron: I could drink this.
- 1:05:37Aaron: We we are coming into the time of year where peat becomes the thing I head towards first, not a thing I'll eventually get to.
- 1:05:47Gavin: Yep.
- 1:05:48Gavin: It's gonna be a fun season three.
- 1:05:51Aaron: All right.
- 1:05:51Aaron: We've reached that time where we must say goodbye.
- 1:05:55Aaron: We encourage you to be careful.
- 1:05:58Aaron: Uh, carry a flashlight, a glow stick, or whatever.
- 1:06:01Aaron: Don't get hit by a car.
- 1:06:02Aaron: Check your candies.
- 1:06:03Aaron: Uh, yeah, you don't want razor blades in your popcorn balls.
- 1:06:06Aaron: Although I've never actually heard of somebody actually having razor blades in their popcorn balls.
- 1:06:11Aaron: That was a thing we absolutely checked for when we were kids.
- 1:06:14Aaron: Um, so until next week, enjoy your candy.
- 1:06:19Aaron: Try to avoid the diabetes until we see you guys again.
- 1:06:24Aaron: Cheers.
- 1:06:24Gavin: And Slainte Mhath.

- 1:07:04Aaron: Seriously though, Halloween adjacent things, are they Halloween ish or Halloween y?
- 1:07:14Gavin: Depends.
- 1:07:15Gavin: I like to say Halloween y.
- 1:07:18Aaron: Yep, that fits.
- 1:07:20Gavin: But if it's past tense, would it be Halloweener?
- 1:07:23Aaron: No, that would be Halloweened.
- 1:07:26Aaron: Oh.
