- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here and it is the 8th of September.
- 0:15It's a Monday. It's the start of a new week.
- 0:18Great to have your company. I hope you're going well.
- 0:20Thank you for inviting me in so that you and I can continue
- 0:23reading through this. Incredible journey through the
- 0:26book of Acts, and today we come to a fascinating chapter as the
- 0:32very first council of the church kind of gets together with all
- 0:36the bigwigs, all of the apostles and the church leaders, and they
- 0:39think through what does church look like if it's including
- 0:43Gentiles? How do we do this?
- 0:45What do we let go of as Jews and what do we hold onto?
- 0:50What is what is the essence of this new faith that Jesus has
- 0:54brought us? So it's a fantastic wrestle with
- 0:58these big questions and a fascinating outcome too.
- 1:01So let us dive in and read it together.
- 1:04As we read together Acts chapter 15, while Paul and Barnabas were
- 1:18at Antioch of Syria, some men from Judea arrived and began to
- 1:22teach the believers. Unless you were circumcised, as
- 1:26required by the Law of Moses, you cannot be saved.
- 1:30Paul and Barnabas disagreed with them, arguing vehemently.
- 1:33Finally, the church decided to send Paul and Barnabas to
- 1:36Jerusalem, accompanied by some local believers, to talk to the
- 1:40apostles and elders about this question.
- 1:43The church sent the delegates to Jerusalem, and they stopped
- 1:46along the way in Phoenicia and Samaria to visit the believers.
- 1:50They told them, much to everyone's joy, that the
- 1:53Gentiles too were being converted.
- 1:56When they arrived in Jerusalem, Barnabas and Paul were welcomed
- 2:00by the whole church, including the apostles and elders.
- 2:03They reported everything God had done through them.
- 2:07But then some of the believers who belonged to the sect of the
- 2:09Pharisees stood up and insisted the Gentile converts must be
- 2:14circumcised and required to follow the Law of Moses.
- 2:18So the apostles and elders met together to resolve this issue.
- 2:23At the meeting, after a long discussion, Peter stood and
- 2:26addressed them as follows. Brothers, you all know that God
- 2:30chose me from among you some time ago to preach to the
- 2:33Gentiles so that they could hear the good news and believe.
- 2:38God knows people's hearts, and He confirmed that He accepts
- 2:42Gentiles by giving them the Holy Spirit, just as He did to us.
- 2:46He made no distinction between us and them, for He cleansed
- 2:50their hearts through faith. So why are you now challenging
- 2:53God by burdening the Gentile believers with a yoke that
- 2:57neither we nor our ancestors were able to bear?
- 3:01We believe that we are all saved the same way by the undeserved
- 3:05grace of the Lord Jesus. Everyone listened quietly as
- 3:10Barnabas and Paul told about the miraculous signs and wonders God
- 3:14had done through them among the Gentiles.
- 3:16When they'd finished, James stood and said, Brothers, listen
- 3:23to me. Peter has told you about the
- 3:26time God first visited the Gentiles to take from them a
- 3:30people for himself. And this conversion of Gentiles
- 3:34is exactly what the prophets predicted as it is written.
- 3:39Afterward, I will return and restore the fallen House of
- 3:43David. I will rebuild its ruins and
- 3:46restore it so that the rest of humanity might seek the Lord,
- 3:51including the Gentiles, all those I've called to be mine.
- 3:55The Lord has spoken, He who made these things known so long ago.
- 4:03And so my judgement is that we should not make it difficult for
- 4:06the Gentiles who are turning to God.
- 4:08Instead, we should write and tell them to abstain from eating
- 4:13food offered to idols, from sexual immorality, from eating
- 4:17the meat of strangled animals, and from consuming blood.
- 4:22For these laws of Moses have been preached in Jewish
- 4:25synagogues in every city, on every Sabbath for many
- 4:29generations. Then the apostles and elders,
- 4:33together with the whole church in Jerusalem, chose delegates
- 4:37and they sent them to Antioch of Syria with Paul and Barnabas to
- 4:40report on this decision. The men chosen were two of the
- 4:44church leaders, Judas, also called Barsabbas and Silas.
- 4:48This is the letter they took with them.
- 4:51This letter is from the apostles and elders, your brothers in
- 4:55Jerusalem. It is written to the Gentile
- 4:58believers in Antioch, Syria and Sicilia.
- 5:01Greetings. We understand that some men from
- 5:04here have troubled you and upset you with their teaching, but we
- 5:08did not send them. So we decided, having come to
- 5:12complete agreement, to send you official representatives, along
- 5:15with our beloved Barnabas and Paul, who have risked their
- 5:18lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 5:22We are sending Judas and Silas to confirm what we have decided
- 5:26concerning your question, for it seemed good to the Holy Spirit
- 5:30and to us to lay no greater burden on you than these few
- 5:34requirements. You must abstain from eating
- 5:37food offered to idols, from consuming blood or the meat of
- 5:40strangled animals, and from sexual immorality.
- 5:44If you do this, you will do well.
- 5:47Farewell. The messengers went at once to
- 5:51Antioch, where they called the general meeting of the believers
- 5:54and delivered the letter. And there was great joy
- 5:57throughout the church that day as they read this encouraging
- 6:01message. Then Judas and Silas, both being
- 6:04prophets, spoke at length to the believers, encouraging and
- 6:08strengthening their faith. They stayed for a while, and
- 6:11then the believers sent them back to the church in Jerusalem
- 6:14with the blessing of peace. Paul and Barnabas stayed in
- 6:17Antioch. They and many others taught and
- 6:21preached the word of the Lord there.
- 6:23After some time, Paul said to Barnabas, Let's go back and
- 6:27visit each city where we previously preached the word of
- 6:29the Lord and see how the new believers are doing.
- 6:32Barnabas agreed and wanted to take along John Mark, but Paul
- 6:36disagreed strongly. Since John Mark had deserted
- 6:40them in Pamphylia and had not continued with them in their
- 6:43work, their disagreement was so sharp that they separated.
- 6:47Barnabas, took John Mark with him and sailed for Cyprus.
- 6:51Paul chose Silas, and as he left, the believers entrusted
- 6:55him to the Lord's gracious care. Then he travelled throughout
- 6:59Syria and Sicilia, strengthening the churches there.
- 7:14Jesus, thank you that your Kingdom is a Kingdom of
- 7:17inclusion and a Kingdom of freedom, not a Kingdom of
- 7:20burden. And we hear these wrestles as
- 7:24these early believers try to work out what to do with all the
- 7:27rules that had that had been a part of their life for so long.
- 7:33My Lord Jesus, I wonder what rules we hold on to.
- 7:36I wonder what restrictions we have had imposed on us or
- 7:40imposed upon ourselves. My Lord, I pray that you would
- 7:45shine a bright light on them so that we can let them go and we
- 7:49can focus instead on you and your ways and your Kingdom and
- 7:56your priorities. And Lord, we see these
- 7:59priorities at the early church. Ask those Gentile believers to
- 8:02follow, not because that's what was needed to make them holy in
- 8:05your sight, but that's what was needed so that they could live
- 8:09in fellowship with the Jewish brothers and sisters who
- 8:12believed in you. So, Lord, I pray that you shape
- 8:15our heart for community, that we can do all we can to bring peace
- 8:21and inclusion and unity in our context here in our communities,
- 8:27in our churches, so that together we can glorify you as
- 8:31our one and only priority. We love you and we glorify you
- 8:36here and now. And we pray all of this in your
- 8:39holy name, Jesus, Amen.
