- 0:00Welcome to unspoken career truths.
- 0:02I'm Cara Wood. And I'm Lauren Levac Gilbert.
- 0:05And we're here to be the Co workers you can trust.
- 0:08In just 10 minutes, we'll cover the strategies you need, the
- 0:11mistakes to avoid, and the insider secrets no one tells you
- 0:15so you can show up with confidence at work.
- 0:21All right, everyone, we are about to have a really important
- 0:24conversation and one that car and I actually haven't had
- 0:27before, but I've had with many, many, many of my friends and
- 0:30it's always an ongoing conversation and it's a.
- 0:33Bad conversation is the one that I have when I figure out if I'm
- 0:36going to be friends with someone.
- 0:38I'm really surprised that you and I haven't had it because
- 0:42usually this conversation is how I know that I have found someone
- 0:47that I agree or get along with. I think we bonded in a work
- 0:51environment where we just found that we like each other and can
- 0:55work together and respect each other.
- 0:57And I'm really excited to hear your buckets now.
- 1:00Please don't defriend me if you hear my buckets and you don't
- 1:02like them. No, it's more about wanting to
- 1:06have this conversation because there are some people that don't
- 1:08want to talk about how they organize their lives and I, I
- 1:12often don't have as much in common with those those folks.
- 1:15So. That's all.
- 1:17So the topic finding your buckets, and no, we're not
- 1:21talking about your buckets in your garage.
- 1:24We are talking about the many things that actually make you
- 1:28you and all of the things that you need to be fulfilled.
- 1:31So real human stuff. What gives you energy?
- 1:34How do you identify yourself? What fulfills you?
- 1:37And those buckets, when they're full, make you feel alive and
- 1:41make you feel like you want to get out of bed in the morning
- 1:44and you feel like you can tackle any problem.
- 1:46And it's a really big balance between all of those different
- 1:51things at different times of your life.
- 1:53Yeah, I mean, I can definitely, I definitely feel it when one of
- 1:57my buckets is like been neglected and just sitting there
- 2:01in the dusty garage and I need to do something so that I feel
- 2:04more whole, more balanced. And I remember the first time I
- 2:08ever had this conversation and it was so exciting to me because
- 2:13I was in one of those moments car where I was just like, like
- 2:15something is wrong, like something's not right.
- 2:18I feel off. And I'd never thought about the
- 2:21concept in this way. And it really kind of changed
- 2:26the way I approach things. And now when I get in a rut like
- 2:28that, I think about my buckets and I say, oof, whoops, I didn't
- 2:32fill this bucket. And that's why maybe why I feel
- 2:34like this. So it just gives you like a
- 2:36really good approach to how to plan your life and make sure
- 2:38that you're feeling fulfilled. And I think we have a culture of
- 2:43like, you have to have it all and you have to be perfect and
- 2:46you have to do everything. And that's just not sustainable.
- 2:49And it's just not the reality. And we have many different
- 2:53buckets, but we only have one glass of water to fill it up,
- 2:55which is the amount of time in a day.
- 2:57And we've talked about time management.
- 2:59So really kind of defining what your buckets are is is super,
- 3:03super important. Yeah, I was introduced to this
- 3:06topic actually at 18 when my best friend bought me a copy of
- 3:09Anna Johnson's 3 Black Skirts. And Anna Johnson is not the
- 3:13first person to, like, have this, like, topic.
- 3:16But it is that life coach approach that people have where
- 3:19they're like, what are the areas of your life you care about?
- 3:22And it is honestly the way that I now organize my time and my
- 3:26thought. And again, some, some months,
- 3:28some weeks, some, you know, days you don't get to every bucket.
- 3:31But I at least kind of identify like what I hope to do, want to
- 3:36do, and what fulfills me from each of those areas.
- 3:39None of us are perfect, so we just try to figure out the
- 3:42buckets the best we can. I have now said buckets more in
- 3:46a 3 minute span than I think I've ever said in my life.
- 3:48So let's talk about what those buckets could be.
- 3:51So some examples of a bucket, right?
- 3:53So your career, your family, your health, your spirituality,
- 3:59your sense of community there. There's so many different
- 4:02buckets that we can really be defined for you.
- 4:05I know for example, my my buckets are friends and family,
- 4:08like a really big core for me. Creativity.
- 4:12I have to do things creatively. I have to like touch and feel
- 4:15things. I have to make things like that
- 4:16is a core part of who I am. Health and exercise, like really
- 4:20feeling good, eating right, moving around.
- 4:22That's a really big bucket for me.
- 4:24I do have a big career bucket. I think that bucket has evolved
- 4:28a bit overtime where I would have said it was a bigger bucket
- 4:31and would have taken a lot more space.
- 4:34And then the other thing is the me bucket.
- 4:36And I say that because when I first started thinking about
- 4:40this, I never had a me bucket. And I know this is all about
- 4:44you, like the you personally in your buckets and what fills you
- 4:47up, but like really specifically focusing on yourself and all of
- 4:50those areas is really important for me.
- 4:52So Cara, what are what are your? Buckets.
- 4:54That's really cool. Well, so I organize mine by
- 4:56color and metaphor. So yeah.
- 5:00So I have 3. They're kind of three baseline,
- 5:03what I'd call baseline ones are for like heart, like you were
- 5:06talking about, like people you care about your like I, I bucket
- 5:10community service, like people I care about and how I am feeling
- 5:14in that kind of red bucket green, which is my like both
- 5:18financial well-being and honestly how clean my house is.
- 5:21But I sort of label that one like chores, you know, like the
- 5:24to do bucket and then blue, which is my body, like how my
- 5:29body is feeling and what I'm eating, you know, and sometimes
- 5:32I throw in like what I'm wearing and how fabulous it makes me
- 5:34feel. So those are my sort of base
- 5:37buckets. And when you talked about
- 5:38career, my other three are like career.
- 5:41I think of orange as just like, how is my career trajectory
- 5:44going? Like what are my passions?
- 5:45What's going on usually in my immediate workplace?
- 5:48And then there's kind of purple, which is my creative.
- 5:52Am I doing like creative things that fulfill me?
- 5:54I call that like my wellspring. And then I have yellow, which is
- 5:58like that spark of stuff that's just fun and fabulous.
- 6:01And usually that's new skills that I want to learn or new
- 6:06things that I want to expose myself to.
- 6:07A lot of times travel falls into that bucket.
- 6:10You know what's so funny, Carl? All my buckets are blue.
- 6:13Everybody has different buckets in the way they think about
- 6:15this. But I, it's funny because as you
- 6:16were saying that I was like, well, actually all of my buckets
- 6:18are blue and they're all clear. And I think about like marbles
- 6:23and like how I put the marbles in each of the buckets so
- 6:26everybody can have. Their own tenant buckets, yeah.
- 6:30And that's to your point, Carl. That's how I plan my month.
- 6:33So I try to look out on a monthly basis and like if I go a
- 6:37whole month without hanging out with a friend or having a phone
- 6:41call with a friend or doing something fun or just like
- 6:44having that fun adventurous moment with someone I love in my
- 6:49life. Like I really have that moment
- 6:51where I'm like, what is wrong? Something feels off.
- 6:53And it took me a while to really figure that out.
- 6:55And I think I went a little bit too much in that bucket where I
- 6:57was like once a week I have to do this.
- 6:59And then kind of life happened. But you have to kind of
- 7:02calibrate and figure out what works for you.
- 7:05Yeah, agreed. I actually, I plan my year with
- 7:09like, you know, when people, when other people are setting,
- 7:14you know, New Year's resolutions, I'm usually
- 7:16thinking by bucket what my kind of goals are.
- 7:19And then I have monthly milestones and I have actually
- 7:22weekly milestones and I often reflect on it with like every
- 7:25day or so just kind of like where I'm at in my, but I'm a
- 7:29very, I like to sort of feel on track and then also just kind of
- 7:33readjust so that I can win my buckets.
- 7:36I love that. That's awesome.
- 7:38You know, it's funny you say that because I make my New
- 7:40Year's resolutions based on my buckets too.
- 7:42And I think it's a really good way of kind of thinking about
- 7:44your life. And one thing I did this year
- 7:47that I thought was really interesting is I actually told
- 7:49my husband my buckets because it was really helpful for me to
- 7:53tell him so that he was aware, like if he saw me in a funk or
- 7:57something, He was like, did you hang out with your friends?
- 8:00I was like, oh, man. So telling a friend, telling a
- 8:03partner to like, help them keep you accountable because it can
- 8:06be really hard to get caught up in the like, hey, I have to do
- 8:09the laundry. I have to make dinner.
- 8:10I have to do this, I have to go to work.
- 8:11But like, your buckets are what makes you feel like you are a
- 8:16human being who is happy and healthy.
- 8:18And if you ignore all of that and put everything into one
- 8:22bucket, it really means that you're just neglecting all of
- 8:26the other parts of you and you'll feel off it.
- 8:29This won't feel right. Yeah, one of the ways that I
- 8:31hold myself accountable is actually like my calendar is
- 8:34often color-coded. But again, because I've got a
- 8:36color scheme, so my sometimes I just look back at my time and I
- 8:40can really see how I've spent my time.
- 8:42And honestly, orange always dominates, right, because I've
- 8:45got a busy job and I've got a full job.
- 8:48So it's not about necessarily balancing it perfectly, but it's
- 8:51about seeing that you have what is necessary for each of those
- 8:55buckets sort of covered. And I mentioned this already,
- 8:58but your buckets can change and that's OK.
- 9:00You know, when when I was like fresh out of college, like my
- 9:04buckets were very different than my buckets are now, right?
- 9:07I have more responsibilities, I have more stuff that I have to
- 9:09worry about, which is fine. But it's really kind of
- 9:12understanding the core of what makes you happy and what will
- 9:15make you feel fulfilled. And to Cara's point, I love that
- 9:18you reevaluate it because there can be a time in your life where
- 9:22like, hey, maybe something's happening with your family or
- 9:24like maybe something's happening with your kids and you really
- 9:27you have to put so much more into that bucket.
- 9:29Even if you take 5 minutes for yourself or or 10 minutes of
- 9:34something that like makes you feel fulfilled, it's like really
- 9:37just kind of taking those baby steps.
- 9:39It's not about like, hey, you have to go on a vacation every
- 9:42month because travel is something that fulfills you.
- 9:44Like even just planning one trip and then looking forward to it.
- 9:47It doesn't have these be these big extreme things.
- 9:50It can be kind of those micro moments.
- 9:52Yeah, it's funny, My buckets haven't changed literally since
- 9:56like JG. And my buckets haven't changed,
- 9:59but my what's in them has like, and also the order, like the
- 10:04priority order, you know, and that sometimes changes on a
- 10:08weekly basis. And actually kind of interesting
- 10:09to see like, oh, I'm valuing this more right now or this,
- 10:13like you said, there's, there's a fire, you know, that I need to
- 10:17fix this. Focus on.
- 10:18Yeah. Well, that's a great point,
- 10:20Cara. I, I think the in terms of
- 10:23order, my bucket when I got out of school was like really career
- 10:27focused and I like really over indexed on that.
- 10:31And I think as I got older, I really kind of figured out there
- 10:35was much more of a balance and that's OK.
- 10:38Again, like you can figure out what works for you and it can
- 10:42change and it will change and that's natural.
- 10:44And you can have a conversation with your friends about this.
- 10:47Actually, we encourage you to do this.
- 10:49Cara and I now have had the conversation together, have this
- 10:51conversation with your friends and also help them kind of keep
- 10:54you accountable. If you're calling your best
- 10:56friend, you're just like, oh, I'm in a funk.
- 10:58Maybe she can be like, did you fill that bucket?
- 11:01Like, just something to think about.
- 11:03Yeah, I like, I, like I said at the start, I love having this
- 11:06conversation because I also learn a lot about other people's
- 11:09values and how they make time for things that are important to
- 11:12them. And you kind of learn your
- 11:13through this. Like in some ways you sort of
- 11:15learn your friends love language a lot of the time where you
- 11:17learn what like makes your friend feel whole or your
- 11:20partner feel whole. And that's, that's really cool.
- 11:23I love it. OK, so key take away.
- 11:25We need more than one thing to help us feel fulfilled, so we
- 11:29need to figure out what those things are.
- 11:31You can call them whatever you want.
- 11:32We're calling them buckets. You can call them whatever makes
- 11:36sense for you and whatever makes you feel good about it.
- 11:38The sooner you define what your buckets are, the sooner than you
- 11:41can really kind of calibrate your life to make sure that
- 11:44you're feeling fulfilled and kind of getting out of any of
- 11:46those funks. It's OK that they change.
- 11:49It's OK that you're going to recalibrate throughout your
- 11:52life. That's what's supposed to
- 11:54happen. And I really encourage you to
- 11:56ask yourself just a a few questions, right?
- 11:58Like which buckets do I have right now?
- 12:01Which ones are important to me? Maybe which buckets have I been
- 12:04neglecting? And what can I put on the
- 12:07calendar, whether it's a micro moment or one specific thing to
- 12:10make me feel better? And just how can I realign with
- 12:15what is making me feel, what will make me feel fulfilled?
- 12:18So just some questions to ask yourself and we encourage you to
- 12:21have this conversation with your friends.
- 12:22Yeah. I'll add one more question,
- 12:24which is like, do you need accountability for your bucket?
- 12:26And then what would bring you that accountability?
- 12:28And not all buckets need accountability because you might
- 12:30feel it, but some of them it actually benefits to have some
- 12:33forcing function that make sure you you kind of fulfill that
- 12:36bucket. I love it.
- 12:38All right, everybody go find your buckets.
