- 0:00Speaker 1: Roads where many young players across positions, frankly across sports
- 0:04Speaker 1: kind of hit after their first year. Drake May was
- 0:06Speaker 1: a red shirt, had a great first year at UNC,
- 0:09Speaker 1: lost a lot of talent and was not quite as
- 0:12Speaker 1: good but still good a second year. And that's based
- 0:14Speaker 1: coaching staff, coaching staff turnover to right. So the last
- 0:17Speaker 1: thing that comes for young players, especially at the quarterback
- 0:22Speaker 1: position is consistency.
- 0:27Speaker 2: That was a good take by you. Thank you, You're welcome. Hello, everybody,
- 0:30Speaker 2: it's Evan Lazar, It's Alex Bart. That's the nice thing
- 0:32Speaker 2: I've said to you in a while.
- 0:33Speaker 1: So especially after that, like usually the opening segment is
- 0:36Speaker 1: least was arguing.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Yeah, that's true, that's one hundred percent true. Hello everybody.
- 0:40Speaker 2: I hope you all are doing well. On this fine Wednesday,
- 0:43Speaker 2: we're an hour earlier than usual because head coach Mike
- 0:48Speaker 2: Rabel is going to talk to the media for the
- 0:50Speaker 2: first time since the Patriots set their initial roster yesterday
- 0:53Speaker 2: at about one point thirty this afternoon, and as the
- 0:58Speaker 2: very big j's at Alex and I, we'd like to
- 1:01Speaker 2: attend that press conference and tell you guys what's going
- 1:04Speaker 2: on there, So we push to show up here a
- 1:07Speaker 2: little bit of an hour early. We think, just one
- 1:10Speaker 2: more house keeping thing, and don't hoe me to this
- 1:13Speaker 2: because things always change and it's in flux. But we
- 1:17Speaker 2: think that we're going to be tend to noon on
- 1:20Speaker 2: Wednesdays in season. We're pretty sure that that's going to
- 1:24Speaker 2: be a safe time for us to do the show with,
- 1:27Speaker 2: Like you know, our media obligations. We do have day jobs,
- 1:31Speaker 2: as I like to say, which is covering this team,
- 1:33Speaker 2: so we do have to do those things. So tend
- 1:36Speaker 2: to noon on Wednesdays will be the live show. Of course,
- 1:40Speaker 2: you can listen to Cash twenty two wherever you get
- 1:43Speaker 2: your podcasts and on YouTube and on Patriots dot com
- 1:47Speaker 2: anytime on demand. But if you want to listen to
- 1:49Speaker 2: us live, then tend to to moving or tend to noon,
- 1:52Speaker 2: excuse me. Moving forward before Patriots Unfiltered will most likely
- 1:56Speaker 2: be our in season permanent times, which is good. I'm
- 2:01Speaker 2: glad we're gonna finally settle the show down here a
- 2:03Speaker 2: little bit and get a permanent slot going. So with
- 2:06Speaker 2: all that out of the way, now, Alex, we are
- 2:09Speaker 2: going to talk about the Patriots initial roster. I love
- 2:12Speaker 2: how we have to throw that caveat in there though,
- 2:14Speaker 2: that it's in flux. You know, it's fluid like anything
- 2:18Speaker 2: could change at any time, So we'll throw that caveat
- 2:21Speaker 2: in there. I do want to hit a little bit
- 2:24Speaker 2: on practice squad and Waiver Wire, but I'm hoping that
- 2:27Speaker 2: we might actually have the Waiver Wire live on the
- 2:30Speaker 2: show in the second hour, so I don't want to
- 2:32Speaker 2: do too much of that early on.
- 2:34Speaker 1: Yeah, I was gonna say it's not date the first hour.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Right because another you know inside baseball term, we want
- 2:41Speaker 2: evergreen content here on the Catch twenty two podcasts. So
- 2:44Speaker 2: if we give our waiver Wire takes and then at
- 2:47Speaker 2: twelve oh five we find out what the waiver Wire
- 2:50Speaker 2: claims were, then that whole segment is for not. So
- 2:54Speaker 2: what we're gonna do is we're gonna talk about the roster,
- 2:57Speaker 2: of course, and the initial roster as it current stands
- 3:00Speaker 2: at eleven am this morning, and I have some takes
- 3:05Speaker 2: to some facilitation points here I want. I want to
- 3:09Speaker 2: tee you up on Alex and we can discuss, but
- 3:12Speaker 2: I also want to start with just my opening take
- 3:14Speaker 2: or my big picture takeaway about this team. And I
- 3:18Speaker 2: know there's a lot of conversations about a lack of
- 3:21Speaker 2: depth across the roster, and I hear all of those things,
- 3:24Speaker 2: But I think the bigger takeaway that I had from
- 3:26Speaker 2: this cutdown day is there was a lot of rumors
- 3:29Speaker 2: about guys potentially being traded, name players, name brand players
- 3:34Speaker 2: that we know of. Kyle Dugger, Anthony Jennings, Kendrick Bourne,
- 3:39Speaker 2: you know, players like that that were in trade rumors,
- 3:42Speaker 2: even some rumors saying that they could just possibly be
- 3:45Speaker 2: cut in some instances. You know, Jennings has been pretty
- 3:49Speaker 2: steadily running with like the two's mean, you know, at
- 3:52Speaker 2: times maybe the threes playing laid into preseason games. Same
- 3:56Speaker 2: thing for Kyle Dugger. Kendrick Bourne hasn't practiced to August
- 4:00Speaker 2: one since the end stadium practice when he got rolled
- 4:03Speaker 2: up on in that practice, so he hasn't participated in
- 4:07Speaker 2: camp much. But my big takeaway from all of this
- 4:11Speaker 2: and the Patriots holding on to all these players for
- 4:14Speaker 2: now is that they were probably they're probably one off
- 4:18Speaker 2: season away from truly turning over the roster. So they've
- 4:23Speaker 2: turned over roughly somewhere around forty five percent of the
- 4:28Speaker 2: roster in one offseason. I think they have twenty five
- 4:31Speaker 2: new players. Twenty five players they acquired in the twenty
- 4:35Speaker 2: twenty five off season that were not on the team
- 4:38Speaker 2: previously are now on the roster currently. So that includes rookies,
- 4:43Speaker 2: That includes a couple of u DFAs rookie draft picks,
- 4:46Speaker 2: udfas agent signings, the whole gamut. So at some point
- 4:53Speaker 2: in time, probably next offseason, but maybe even beyond that,
- 4:58Speaker 2: Mike Rable will probably get his guys truly in here
- 5:01Speaker 2: in terms of schematic fits and guys that are going
- 5:05Speaker 2: to play their roles and play their positions the way
- 5:08Speaker 2: that Rabel is envisioning, especially on defense in terms of
- 5:13Speaker 2: like Anthony Jennings, Sturdy Edgesetter, probably not the first step explosiveness,
- 5:18Speaker 2: get off pass rusher that they're looking for in this defense.
- 5:22Speaker 2: Kyle Dugger hybrid safety, best to use it in the box,
- 5:25Speaker 2: probably not the quarters, and a deep safety type that
- 5:29Speaker 2: they're looking for right now at this point. But if
- 5:32Speaker 2: you had started to take those players off the team,
- 5:36Speaker 2: whether it was because of contract, scheme, fit, whatever the
- 5:39Speaker 2: case may be, all these conversations that people are having
- 5:42Speaker 2: about the lack of depth, to me, that was when
- 5:45Speaker 2: the depth was going to get dangerously thin. Is if
- 5:47Speaker 2: you start stripping away all these Belichick holdovers, Yeah, prematurely,
- 5:53Speaker 2: and so I think they wisely are hanging on to
- 5:55Speaker 2: these players.
- 5:56Speaker 3: Now.
- 5:56Speaker 2: Maybe part of it is the trademarket wasn't there and
- 5:59Speaker 2: all that good stuff. But the way I look at
- 6:01Speaker 2: it is, if you had to play Anthony Jennings, Let's
- 6:05Speaker 2: say there's injuries at edge rusher, they lose Chase On,
- 6:08Speaker 2: they lose Landry or Keyon White, and you have to
- 6:12Speaker 2: put Anthony Jennings in the rotation. Anthony Jennings an NFL player,
- 6:16Speaker 2: He's a starting caliber edge setter, So I feel okay
- 6:19Speaker 2: with having him out there. I feel okay if he's
- 6:23Speaker 2: right healthy. You know he's healthy physically healthy, mentally. Right
- 6:27Speaker 2: with Kyle dugger I feel good about Kyle Duggar playing
- 6:30Speaker 2: as an injury replacement, spot starter type safety or maybe
- 6:34Speaker 2: even a full time player if it starts to click
- 6:37Speaker 2: for him. So it would have been a little bit
- 6:40Speaker 2: hasty in my opinion, to move on from those guys now. Now,
- 6:44Speaker 2: next offseason, you'll have another free agency class, you'll have
- 6:47Speaker 2: another draft class, and maybe they get pushed off the
- 6:50Speaker 2: roster at that point. But you do it now, I
- 6:54Speaker 2: think you were going to be flirting with a dangerously
- 6:56Speaker 2: thin defense, especially, so I understand why they held on
- 7:00Speaker 2: to those guys.
- 7:01Speaker 1: I mean the offensive line too. Obviously they cut some
- 7:03Speaker 1: Belichick guys, but holding on a guy like Kayden Wallace
- 7:06Speaker 1: right or for Darius I guess was Vderian low Belichick
- 7:08Speaker 1: I was here in twenty three pre rapul guys, I
- 7:11Speaker 1: guess would be a better way to say it. Yeah,
- 7:14Speaker 1: but no, I I think it's a good point. The
- 7:16Speaker 1: roster turnover they've already had is tremendous. The roster turnover
- 7:22Speaker 1: that they've had, like a high number going back through
- 7:26Speaker 1: the last few years and looking at what teams have done,
- 7:29Speaker 1: A high number from week eighteen to week one is
- 7:32Speaker 1: like forty percent. And youo to them, what at twenty
- 7:34Speaker 1: five twenty five new guys, So that that's almost fifty
- 7:37Speaker 1: and it will that number will prop might exceed fifty
- 7:40Speaker 1: percent by the time we get done, you know, twelve
- 7:42Speaker 1: o'clock can today and we get those waiver claims. So
- 7:46Speaker 1: if you're looking for more, if you want to, you know,
- 7:48Speaker 1: parse individual players, should they have kept, you know, could
- 7:52Speaker 1: they have I r Kendrick Bourne yesterday and maybe kept
- 7:54Speaker 1: Braden Swinton if they believed in him, or was a
- 7:56Speaker 1: chance they could there was a chance that could have
- 7:58Speaker 1: held on to you know, got like Marcus, so I
- 8:00Speaker 1: know ask for his release. My guesses, that's depth related.
- 8:03Speaker 2: Sorry, twenty three new guys.
- 8:04Speaker 1: Twenty three new guys. Okay, so close enough, and they
- 8:07Speaker 1: need to get to twenty What don't make me do
- 8:10Speaker 1: math on the air? Half fifty three is twenty five
- 8:13Speaker 1: or half a fifty to twenty five to two B
- 8:15Speaker 1: twenty six, so they basically get to twenty seven to
- 8:17Speaker 1: twenty eight and they're at twenty three.
- 8:19Speaker 2: They're at twenty three, so that's basically forty four three percent.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Okay, so five more guys woul put in a fifty percent,
- 8:25Speaker 1: which would be again like forty five. Forty is usually
- 8:29Speaker 1: high forty flat, and they're at forty five. But to
- 8:32Speaker 1: your point, you look at next year one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
- 8:36Speaker 1: They have ten draft picks next year, and they've been
- 8:38Speaker 1: keeping a lot of their draft picks that they're going
- 8:40Speaker 1: to not have as much flexibility with free agency next
- 8:43Speaker 1: year capwise, but they will still have the ability to
- 8:46Speaker 1: add I mean, the last Belichick, the last player who
- 8:50Speaker 1: played for Belichick. And it's nothing against the guys Belichick
- 8:55Speaker 1: brought into Oh no, but Bill draft Gonzalez. Gonzalez is
- 8:57Speaker 1: gonna be heear so beyond Gonzales, like is Barmore and Barmore,
- 9:02Speaker 1: there's gonna be significant turnover. I mean, the turnover from
- 9:05Speaker 1: Belichicks last year is going to hit eighty five ninety percent,
- 9:07Speaker 1: I think relatively soon.
- 9:09Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I would agree with that.
- 9:10Speaker 1: Because even of those and I guess they cut a
- 9:14Speaker 1: lot of the Mayo guys, especially that draft, but even
- 9:17Speaker 1: factoring in the Mayo guys from where they were just
- 9:20Speaker 1: a couple of years ago, Like there's no more super
- 9:22Speaker 1: Bowl winners here. That was an understated I don't call
- 9:25Speaker 1: the milestone, but like checkpoint, Yeah, there's no more guys here.
- 9:28Speaker 1: They won a super Bowl here. That is a significant
- 9:31Speaker 1: turnover for how much they won. And I mean, maybe
- 9:35Speaker 1: I want to say it because we were it was
- 9:37Speaker 1: our first year twenty eighteen. It's a long time ago
- 9:40Speaker 1: in the NFL, but it's also not that long ago.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Like the turnover they've already done is significant. They need
- 9:46Speaker 1: more and more will happen. We said this back in January,
- 9:48Speaker 1: even they were not going to fix everything they needed
- 9:51Speaker 1: to fix in one off season is unrealistic. There's simply
- 9:54Speaker 1: too much to do. They took a good chunk out
- 9:57Speaker 1: of it though this offseason.
- 9:58Speaker 2: That's the way I look at it is it was
- 10:00Speaker 2: too much to do to turn over the entire roster
- 10:03Speaker 2: and rid yourself of all the Belichick holdovers that still exist.
- 10:07Speaker 2: And what I keep saying on defense specifically, because that's
- 10:11Speaker 2: really where the biggest scheme change is happening, right is
- 10:14Speaker 2: what's going on on defense where they're running an entirely
- 10:17Speaker 2: new defense compared to what they were doing by bringing
- 10:20Speaker 2: McDaniels back. They they are kind of outside of the
- 10:24Speaker 2: a VP year. They're kind of running the same offense
- 10:26Speaker 2: that they were running. But you know what, the majority of.
- 10:28Speaker 1: Belichi weired out a lot of the offense the last
- 10:31Speaker 1: couple of years ago to go to that West Coast
- 10:33Speaker 1: thing they were running with everybody else.
- 10:35Speaker 2: They did in some spots. Yeah, but I would still.
- 10:38Speaker 1: Say, who's still here offensively from twenty one born and
- 10:41Speaker 1: I mean he could Hunter Henry Andre Andre mike on WINU. Okay,
- 10:49Speaker 1: that's four players. It's not that many.
- 10:51Speaker 2: Yeah, but I still feel as though the carryover offensively
- 10:58Speaker 2: is more significant than the carryovers grammatically from a defensive standpoint.
- 11:02Speaker 1: To what Josh was doing. Yes, but it's not like
- 11:06Speaker 1: you have this through line of guys who were just
- 11:08Speaker 1: running that stuff the whole time. You have a lot
- 11:09Speaker 1: of guys who in between when they tried to run
- 11:12Speaker 1: the other stuff, were brought in.
- 11:13Speaker 2: But you even have guys that are coming in that
- 11:16Speaker 2: were in similar systems, like Matt Collins. Well, so I
- 11:20Speaker 2: guess the fon digs with Brian David.
- 11:21Speaker 1: But that's kind of my point. They turned it over
- 11:23Speaker 1: because they moved on from a lot of those guys
- 11:25Speaker 1: that they brought in to run the a VP or
- 11:28Speaker 1: the Patricia whatever bill O'Brien was running like that offense.
- 11:31Speaker 2: Yeah, well I would say that Patricia bill O'Brien offense
- 11:34Speaker 2: was this offense, but.
- 11:36Speaker 1: I thought Patricia's more West Coast. He tried to, he
- 11:39Speaker 1: tried whatever. Okay, that thing was beyond definition.
- 11:41Speaker 2: I think that that's my biggest takeaways. I would have
- 11:46Speaker 2: been I would have been disappointed if they had salary
- 11:52Speaker 2: dumped Kyle Duggar or salary dumped Afrety Jags. Now, if
- 11:56Speaker 2: a teammate come out and offered you legitimate draft capital
- 11:59Speaker 2: for Kyle dugger sure, go ahead and do it, But
- 12:02Speaker 2: I just think, like I said earlier, I think you
- 12:05Speaker 2: start to get dangerously thin if you're just moving on
- 12:09Speaker 2: these from these players, because Kyle Dugger is due ten
- 12:12Speaker 2: million dollars this season, and he's gonna be your third
- 12:15Speaker 2: or four safety, so it's just an expensive backup at
- 12:17Speaker 2: that point. I like the fact that they're holding their
- 12:20Speaker 2: water on those players. I think it's the right thing
- 12:23Speaker 2: to do, and I agree that they have dip thatches.
- 12:26Speaker 2: We've talked about the depth issues all summer long. Like,
- 12:29Speaker 2: I don't think that this is a new thing on
- 12:30Speaker 2: this show or a new thing on Patriots Unfiltered. We've
- 12:33Speaker 2: been highlighting areas where they're thin all summer long. But
- 12:38Speaker 2: I also don't think it's very surprising as a result
- 12:41Speaker 2: that they're We look at the roster and all of
- 12:44Speaker 2: a sudden, it's a thin roster. Yeah, Like we kind
- 12:46Speaker 2: of knew that they won four games over the last
- 12:49Speaker 2: two years, eight games combined for two seasons, you're gonna
- 12:51Speaker 2: have a pretty thin roster and draft picks and draft
- 12:55Speaker 2: classes that didn't work out. If that's you win four
- 12:58Speaker 2: games back to back seasons, you're gonna have a lot
- 12:59Speaker 2: of personnel moves that didn't work out. That that's just
- 13:02Speaker 2: the bottom line. So I wonder, in all seriousness, like
- 13:07Speaker 2: if you had looked at I know this is the
- 13:09Speaker 2: example we always go to, but I'm just gonna go
- 13:11Speaker 2: to it anyway, if you looked at the Commander's roster
- 13:14Speaker 2: at this time last year, Yeah, would you really be
- 13:16Speaker 2: looking at that roster and being like, Wow, one through
- 13:19Speaker 2: fifty three, this team is stacked. No, Like, they had
- 13:23Speaker 2: the exact.
- 13:23Speaker 1: Same thing where they were a little deeper.
- 13:25Speaker 2: They had their free agency class, they had their draft class,
- 13:29Speaker 2: and the difference was they had a coaching staff that
- 13:32Speaker 2: got them back to level and then they had a
- 13:35Speaker 2: rookie quarterback who was outstanding in Jaden Daniels that that
- 13:38Speaker 2: elevated them to that next level. I think the Patriots
- 13:41Speaker 2: are still on track to be in a similar spot.
- 13:44Speaker 2: I really do, to Washington to some of the other
- 13:46Speaker 2: teams that have done that. Now, that's not to say
- 13:48Speaker 2: they're gonna go out there and win twelve games. I
- 13:50Speaker 2: think the Commanders won twelve games last year. That I
- 13:53Speaker 2: don't know if that's gonna happen. But I still look
- 13:56Speaker 2: at this team and think that they're in the same
- 13:58Speaker 2: spot that I thought they were in six weeks ago. Like,
- 14:00Speaker 2: I don't necessarily think I learned any new information, So
- 14:04Speaker 2: that that was my big picture tape yet any other
- 14:06Speaker 2: big picture thoughts or should we move on to some
- 14:08Speaker 2: of the specifics.
- 14:09Speaker 1: That's pretty much it.
- 14:10Speaker 2: So I have like eight or nine things here on
- 14:13Speaker 2: my list that we can get to over the next
- 14:15Speaker 2: hour or so, and then we'll we'll open up the
- 14:17Speaker 2: calls and emails as well, and hopefully, like I said,
- 14:21Speaker 2: we'll get the waiver claims. Waivers do have until noon
- 14:24Speaker 2: today to submit waiver claims, and typically speaking, those come
- 14:27Speaker 2: out really quickly, you know, the Big Jay's Albert Breer,
- 14:31Speaker 2: Tom Pellisero, somebody will tweet them out like twelve O five,
- 14:34Speaker 2: twelve ten. Usually we have those. So the number one
- 14:37Speaker 2: thing on my list, though, alex is I think the
- 14:40Speaker 2: number one thing on everybody everybody's list. Eight wide receivers.
- 14:43Speaker 2: It's a big number. Now, I should say Kansas City
- 14:46Speaker 2: carried eight wide receivers too, So maybe this is just
- 14:49Speaker 2: becoming a little bit more normal. I think six became
- 14:52Speaker 2: normal maybe, like in the last three to five years,
- 14:56Speaker 2: they've started gravitating more towards six especially if you have
- 15:00Speaker 2: like returners and gunners and guys that are contributing on
- 15:03Speaker 2: special teams at the position. So there are a few
- 15:06Speaker 2: teams that carried eight, the bigger you know down the
- 15:10Speaker 2: depth chart here. We knew that they were going to
- 15:12Speaker 2: keep Digs, Pop, Booty Hollins, Kyle Williams, those guys were
- 15:16Speaker 2: all gonna be here. Those five were going to be here.
- 15:18Speaker 2: So the fact that Baker, Chisholm, Kendrick Bourne are all
- 15:23Speaker 2: here and in Bourne's case, are starting the season on
- 15:26Speaker 2: the active roster, I think is a little bit of
- 15:28Speaker 2: a surprise. I had them at seven with Bourne on
- 15:30Speaker 2: IR and they didn't go the IR route with Kendrick Bourne.
- 15:33Speaker 1: Well, just surprising because like I don't think, I know
- 15:35Speaker 1: some people had suggested just Bourne get moved to IR today.
- 15:39Speaker 1: That would just be a little surprising because they had
- 15:40Speaker 1: an extra spot to do it yesterday that you can't
- 15:43Speaker 1: take it with you. So I think all eight can
- 15:48Speaker 1: start the season. I don't think they all will. You know, Baker,
- 15:51Speaker 1: maybe we should just count him as a special teamer.
- 15:54Speaker 1: Maybe we shouldn't count him as a wide receiver. So
- 15:56Speaker 1: now you're back to seven, Does that mean Bourne's not
- 15:59Speaker 1: dressing on game day is maybe Eft and Chisholm banged
- 16:02Speaker 1: up to the point where he's not gonna be able
- 16:04Speaker 1: to go right away, but they didn't want to put
- 16:05Speaker 1: him on IR so he doesn't miss too much time.
- 16:08Speaker 1: So okay, now you really are at six with Bourn
- 16:11Speaker 1: like is that how it works? But I still think
- 16:13Speaker 1: another move is coming from one of those guys. Maybe
- 16:15Speaker 1: they didn't want to expose Baker to the initial round
- 16:19Speaker 1: of waivers. Sometimes teams will do that where we don't
- 16:21Speaker 1: want to expose him in the big one, but you
- 16:24Speaker 1: know the because yesterday was the big waiver period, or
- 16:27Speaker 1: yesterday and today, but now you're gonna have this whole
- 16:31Speaker 1: other round of waivers because today teams are gonna claim players, right, Okay,
- 16:35Speaker 1: now they need a wave players to get the room
- 16:37Speaker 1: for they claimed, and then that's a second wave, and
- 16:39Speaker 1: then it's the third wave, and it gets smaller as
- 16:40Speaker 1: you go. So sometimes teams may look at it and say,
- 16:43Speaker 1: we don't want to expose this guy to the first
- 16:44Speaker 1: round of waivers. When teams are more open to the
- 16:47Speaker 1: idea of we're gonna put in claims and we're fine
- 16:49Speaker 1: cutting players and blah, blah blah. Okay, let's get to Thursday,
- 16:52Speaker 1: let's get to Friday. It's a little more settled. We've
- 16:55Speaker 1: added some guys when you to open up a spot.
- 16:57Speaker 1: Now we're a little more comfortable waving Jevon Baby getting
- 17:01Speaker 1: him on the practice squad because other teams are more
- 17:03Speaker 1: settled and where they're at.
- 17:04Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a fair point. I think with eft and
- 17:06Speaker 2: Chisholm just starting there, I wouldn't be totally shocked Iffton
- 17:11Speaker 2: Chishm's a healthy scratch for a good portion of the
- 17:15Speaker 2: first half of the season, because really he's your backup
- 17:20Speaker 2: slot and probably your backup punt returner. But as long
- 17:24Speaker 2: as Marcus Jones is healthy, he's gonna be returning punts,
- 17:28Speaker 2: And as long as Pob Douglass and Stefan Diggs are healthy,
- 17:31Speaker 2: they're gonna be You're starting Z and you're starting slot receiver.
- 17:35Speaker 2: And then Kyle Williams is also here, and he's kind
- 17:37Speaker 2: of maybe got a chance to be a little bit
- 17:40Speaker 2: of both of those things as well, especially playing at
- 17:42Speaker 2: the Z spot. So at the end of the day,
- 17:45Speaker 2: I don't know if there's one hundred per game day
- 17:48Speaker 2: role immediately for Efton Chisholm because of the depth there,
- 17:53Speaker 2: And this is no different in a lot of ways
- 17:55Speaker 2: than like what Edelman experienced with Wes Welker early on.
- 17:58Speaker 2: Like it's not all that different than those different, you
- 18:01Speaker 2: know scenarios where a guy like Edelman really took Edelman
- 18:05Speaker 2: like three or four years until he got full time
- 18:08Speaker 2: playing time because of Wes Welker. So I'm not saying
- 18:11Speaker 2: that Pop Douglas is as good as Wes Welker, but
- 18:14Speaker 2: I think it's very clear that Pop Douglas is your
- 18:16Speaker 2: starting slot and there's really no argument there from anybody.
- 18:20Speaker 2: So Efton Chisholm is not a coverage player on special teams.
- 18:26Speaker 2: He's not gonna be covering kicks, I don't think on
- 18:29Speaker 2: special teams, whereas Javon Baker is going to be covering kicks.
- 18:33Speaker 2: So you could realistically see Javon Baker on three or
- 18:36Speaker 2: four different units on special teams, Wherefton Chishom's value on
- 18:40Speaker 2: special teams is really just on punt return, which is
- 18:43Speaker 2: he's not even the number one punt returner on the team.
- 18:46Speaker 2: So I could definitely see eft And Chisholm being a
- 18:50Speaker 2: healthy scratch with Javon Baker maybe having a game day
- 18:54Speaker 2: roll on special teams, But like you said that, then
- 18:57Speaker 2: there that leaves Kendrick Bourne. And my whole thing with
- 19:00Speaker 2: IR with Kendrick Bourne is that this is a nice
- 19:03Speaker 2: stash player where you know he's an NFL receiver. You
- 19:07Speaker 2: know he can play in this offense, did it in
- 19:10Speaker 2: twenty twenty one and in a pinch, if you have
- 19:13Speaker 2: a run of injuries that wide receiver, if Digs goes down,
- 19:16Speaker 2: if Pop goes down, I Booty goes down, if any
- 19:19Speaker 2: of those guys get hurt, then you have a veteran,
- 19:24Speaker 2: experienced receiver in Kendrick Bourne that you can activate off
- 19:27Speaker 2: injured reserve and hopefully it doesn't miss a beat. But
- 19:32Speaker 2: having him on the roster, I don't know what his
- 19:35Speaker 2: game day role is like, are you going to really
- 19:37Speaker 2: have seven? Like I can talk like I said, I
- 19:39Speaker 2: can talk myself into Chisholm not being active on game
- 19:42Speaker 2: day to start, but I don't know how you're gonna
- 19:45Speaker 2: keep boring anchism as healthy scratches or a healthy scratch
- 19:50Speaker 2: a veteran like Kendrick Born. That's a tough spot.
- 19:53Speaker 1: Unless unless they have a role form that we just
- 19:56Speaker 1: didn't see in camp because he was hurt.
- 19:58Speaker 2: Yeah, I guess, I just I've named those five guys
- 20:01Speaker 2: off the top. But you're gonna want all five of
- 20:03Speaker 2: those guys to play. You're gonna want to you know,
- 20:06Speaker 2: you're gonna have four of those guys playing, and Dig's
- 20:09Speaker 2: Booty Hollins and Pop and then you want to leave
- 20:12Speaker 2: the door cracked open for Kyle Williams if he starts
- 20:16Speaker 2: to make a push to have opportunities to play. So
- 20:19Speaker 2: it'd be interesting to see how they handle that on
- 20:21Speaker 2: game day and how they go about that. Anything else
- 20:25Speaker 2: on the eight wide receiver is just a big number.
- 20:27Speaker 2: It just I don't know if there's really much. I
- 20:29Speaker 2: just I don't know.
- 20:29Speaker 1: Are they keeping born just as depth. Maybe the idea is, Okay,
- 20:33Speaker 1: you're gonna have the five guys that are gonna play.
- 20:35Speaker 1: Chishm's banged up, but we don't want to put him
- 20:37Speaker 1: on ir somebody else gets hurt. Kendrick Bourne slides in,
- 20:41Speaker 1: and it's just they didn't want to wait if Chishm's
- 20:44Speaker 1: banged up, maybe they want them available for the first one.
- 20:46Speaker 2: Well, it's kind of like I take off the top
- 20:49Speaker 2: about the defensive guys, like Kendrick Bourne's one of your
- 20:52Speaker 2: best fifty three players. Yeah, and the way that they
- 20:55Speaker 2: built this entire roster out, it does feel like that's
- 20:58Speaker 2: just the path that they went down was just who
- 21:01Speaker 2: were the best fifty three guys in training camp, because
- 21:04Speaker 2: they do have some odd position like thresholds, like in
- 21:10Speaker 2: terms of positions, like eight wide receivers is a little
- 21:13Speaker 2: bit odd. They only kept five corners, They only kept
- 21:17Speaker 2: four true inside linebackers or off ball linebackers, so they
- 21:21Speaker 2: did kind of finagle the roster a little bit in
- 21:24Speaker 2: terms of the minimums at each position. So maybe that
- 21:27Speaker 2: that is the path that they just said, Hey, Kendrick
- 21:29Speaker 2: Burden's a good player, Like I don't know if he's
- 21:32Speaker 2: gonna play, I don't know if he's a trade candidate,
- 21:34Speaker 2: I don't know, but he's a good enough player to
- 21:36Speaker 2: make our team right now.
- 21:37Speaker 1: No, it felt like a big day for the concept
- 21:39Speaker 1: of the at large roster spots.
- 21:40Speaker 2: Yeah, you nailed that. Did you get how many did
- 21:43Speaker 2: you get? Did you get it right.
- 21:44Speaker 1: With the at large or the ross projection? Let me see,
- 21:48Speaker 1: I didn't even look.
- 21:49Speaker 2: Yeah, we're in the roster projection.
- 21:50Speaker 1: I guess, well, because the roster projection I did week one.
- 21:53Speaker 1: I didn't do the initial roster, okay, so I have
- 21:55Speaker 1: liked the TVD guys on there. We'll know soon. So
- 21:57Speaker 1: I had Here are the nineteen guys I had for
- 21:59Speaker 1: ten spots and tended to make it Born Baker, Low,
- 22:03Speaker 1: Wallace Jennings, Elijah Ponder, Truman Jones didn't make it right, No,
- 22:10Speaker 1: Kyle Dougart del Pettis. So eight of my ten bubble
- 22:13Speaker 1: guys made it. With Tavai on I R there you go,
- 22:18Speaker 1: all right, So who are the bubble guys? Who are
- 22:21Speaker 1: the guys not on the bubble that made it? There'd
- 22:25Speaker 1: have to be two more guys. I don't know.
- 22:26Speaker 2: Let's go to the second one here.
- 22:27Speaker 1: Maybe I just counted wrong.
- 22:28Speaker 2: So this one I just called biggest surprises. I don't
- 22:32Speaker 2: think there were any major surprises. But I think the
- 22:34Speaker 2: one surprise that caught everybody's eye was Brandon Swinson getting
- 22:39Speaker 2: h released, getting waved fifth round pick. I feel like
- 22:45Speaker 2: I talked about we talked about this a little bit,
- 22:47Speaker 2: that he was having a quiet summer. I wish I
- 22:49Speaker 2: kind of had hammered it home a little bit more.
- 22:51Speaker 2: I'm not overly shocked that they if they were just
- 22:55Speaker 2: evaluating camp, and they were all things created equal across
- 23:00Speaker 2: a board. Who had the better camp, Who were the
- 23:02Speaker 2: best fifty three guys on the roster? Like I just mentioned,
- 23:05Speaker 2: I'm not overly shocked that Braden Swinson didn't make the team.
- 23:08Speaker 2: I didn't think he had a really I didn't think
- 23:11Speaker 2: he really stood out in camp. I'm not gonna sit
- 23:13Speaker 2: here and say you had a bad camp, because I
- 23:14Speaker 2: don't know, Like maybe he was doing things that I
- 23:17Speaker 2: you know, little details and things like that, maybe he
- 23:19Speaker 2: was doing those correctly. Doesn't seem like it, though. And
- 23:21Speaker 2: I didn't think that his production was overly eye catching either.
- 23:26Speaker 2: I had a couple hurries in Minnesota in the in
- 23:29Speaker 2: the game, but it was in the fourth quarter of
- 23:31Speaker 2: a preseason game against guys that weren't going to make
- 23:34Speaker 2: the roster for the Vikings either. I never thought that
- 23:37Speaker 2: Braden Switson really made any positive momentum. I didn't necessarily
- 23:41Speaker 2: think I saw a ton of flashes. I actually thought
- 23:45Speaker 2: in a lot of ways. Obviously ponder, but I think
- 23:48Speaker 2: Truman Jones almost showed a little bit more in the
- 23:51Speaker 2: preseason and in training camp than Braiden Swinson. The other
- 23:55Speaker 2: angle with Braden Swinson was there was some draft scuttle
- 23:59Speaker 2: but but around the time that he was drafted, I
- 24:01Speaker 2: think we had we had somebody on. Maybe Dane Brugler
- 24:08Speaker 2: mentioned it like that some teams were a little bit
- 24:10Speaker 2: if he on Braiden Swinson in terms of his football
- 24:14Speaker 2: character and things like that. So there's a possibility that
- 24:17Speaker 2: maybe they look at it and say, twenty teams didn't
- 24:22Speaker 2: even have him on their draft board, so maybe he
- 24:24Speaker 2: does make it through waivers. Are you that surprised that
- 24:27Speaker 2: Braden Swinson got cut because I am not little.
- 24:30Speaker 1: Bit just in the turn like, yeah, he didn't really
- 24:32Speaker 1: have a super impactful summer, but it was also okay,
- 24:34Speaker 1: they have, you know, bit round pick. He was always
- 24:38Speaker 1: kind of a project player. Do they keep him around
- 24:40Speaker 1: as a developmental player if you're going just off the
- 24:43Speaker 1: production this summer, he wasn't one of their fifty three
- 24:46Speaker 1: best players. I thought they might hang on to him
- 24:47Speaker 1: for the upside. But that's that's why it wasn't overly shocking.
- 24:52Speaker 1: I was a little surprised about Truman Jones as well,
- 24:54Speaker 1: like you said, because he was playing core special teams
- 24:57Speaker 1: role as well. He's somebody I would think is going
- 24:59Speaker 1: to be back here on the practice squad if he
- 25:01Speaker 1: doesn't get claimed.
- 25:02Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a fair point. I just like I said,
- 25:05Speaker 2: I didn't really I was. I was really high on
- 25:08Speaker 2: Braden Swinson when they drafted him. Like I will fully
- 25:11Speaker 2: admit that. I guess I missed on that one, if
- 25:14Speaker 2: we want to say it already, I don't know. It's
- 25:16Speaker 2: a little early. Still even though he got cut, you know,
- 25:18Speaker 2: he could always catch on with another team or practice
- 25:21Speaker 2: squad and eventually make a you know, an impact in
- 25:25Speaker 2: his career in the NFL. It's the book is not
- 25:28Speaker 2: closed certainly on Braden Swinson's career. But I was high
- 25:33Speaker 2: on the pick when they made it, especially where they
- 25:35Speaker 2: got him in that fifth round. I think a lot
- 25:36Speaker 2: of people in the draft community and the media had
- 25:39Speaker 2: him valued a lot higher than the fifth round, like
- 25:41Speaker 2: a top one hundred player, probably like an end of
- 25:44Speaker 2: the top one hundred, you know, somewhere in that seventy
- 25:46Speaker 2: five to one hundred range, but certainly a guy that
- 25:49Speaker 2: a lot of people thought was going to go ended
- 25:51Speaker 2: Day two, early day three. Some of the things that
- 25:54Speaker 2: we heard after the draft about him off the field
- 25:57Speaker 2: or his football character. I think pushed him to the
- 25:59Speaker 2: fifth round. Yeah, but he had talent of a third
- 26:02Speaker 2: round pick, I would say, so I am surprised that
- 26:04Speaker 2: it didn't happen. But at the same time, it didn't happen.
- 26:06Speaker 2: It never he never got any momentum going. I never
- 26:09Speaker 2: thought that he flashed consistently in the practices or in
- 26:14Speaker 2: the game. So I'm not overly shocked if we're just
- 26:17Speaker 2: evaluating it now. I am a little bit surprised that
- 26:20Speaker 2: they gave up on a fifth round pick and didn't
- 26:22Speaker 2: just give him some leeway and a chance.
- 26:25Speaker 1: That's surprise was if there was one.
- 26:27Speaker 2: Yeah, But I would also put like I've seen a
- 26:30Speaker 2: lot of like, you know, bust, like waste of a pick.
- 26:34Speaker 2: They drafted him like one hundred and forty sixth overall.
- 26:36Speaker 2: It wasn't like they drafted him forty sixth overall. It
- 26:39Speaker 2: was Yeah, he was a fifth round pick. He was
- 26:41Speaker 2: a Day three guy. Yes, he had some buzz and
- 26:43Speaker 2: he had some hype coming into the draft, but let's
- 26:46Speaker 2: not get over his zealous and started acting like they
- 26:49Speaker 2: like cut a second round pick in his rookie season.
- 26:51Speaker 2: That's not what happened here. So Braden Swinson was probably
- 26:55Speaker 2: the biggest. Is there any other surprises to you? I
- 26:57Speaker 2: thought that really this was a pretty unsurprising honestly.
- 27:02Speaker 1: I mean, you're under the kickers. We'll get to the kickers, okay.
- 27:06Speaker 1: I it wasn't a surprise to me. I think it
- 27:08Speaker 1: came as a surprise to many. I understand why people
- 27:11Speaker 1: are surprised. It was something where how much of a
- 27:15Speaker 1: competition was it really right where we they kind of
- 27:19Speaker 1: started dropping the hands the last couple weeks, I guess
- 27:21Speaker 1: said we'll get to the kickers, but we.
- 27:22Speaker 2: Can get to the kickers now.
- 27:23Speaker 1: I just think that's the other thing that qualifies as
- 27:25Speaker 1: a surprise. On a day that it was finally, I
- 27:28Speaker 1: think we said off the air like he was one
- 27:29Speaker 1: of the most eventful cutdown days we've covered, even though
- 27:33Speaker 1: not much happened.
- 27:33Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't.
- 27:34Speaker 1: It was just eight wide receivers and there was a
- 27:36Speaker 1: bunch going on.
- 27:37Speaker 2: There's a lot of nothing.
- 27:38Speaker 1: We'll ever top to Cam Newton day when Quick Little
- 27:40Speaker 1: story time. We were up because it was during COVID,
- 27:43Speaker 1: so like me, there were only certain areas of the
- 27:45Speaker 1: media could work whatever, So we were up in like
- 27:47Speaker 1: the game day press box. It was just me and you.
- 27:49Speaker 1: I don't remember why we were up there.
- 27:51Speaker 2: Something.
- 27:52Speaker 1: Oh, we were going to record something for Cel and
- 27:54Speaker 1: Ass and we're waiting on the cuts and it was
- 27:56Speaker 1: a super uneventful. I think they cut like Miles Bryant
- 27:59Speaker 1: or somebody like, oh, Miles Bryant, Like that's I thought
- 28:03Speaker 1: he'd make the team. Evan goes to the bathroom. I
- 28:06Speaker 1: see the tweet. Jim McBride topprocate, right, I see the tweet.
- 28:09Speaker 1: Evan comes back. How do you go to the bathroom
- 28:12Speaker 1: and they cut Cam Newton. You didn't believe me for like,
- 28:14Speaker 1: I had to actually show you the tweet. You thought
- 28:15Speaker 1: I was screwing with you. Yeah, that was an interesting day.
- 28:18Speaker 1: But with the kickers, so part of Romo was the
- 28:22Speaker 1: better field goal kicker this summer. It was hit on
- 28:25Speaker 1: ninety I think it was ninety one percent of his kicks.
- 28:28Speaker 1: If he round up, it was ninety points, something like
- 28:30Speaker 1: ninety one percent of his kicks, which is a high number,
- 28:33Speaker 1: Like that's a significant number. Borgalis was around eighty four percent.
- 28:37Speaker 1: Now he attempted I think twelve more kicks. Ten twelve
- 28:41Speaker 1: more kicks. I can pull numbers up on my phone
- 28:42Speaker 1: in a second. Ten twelve more kicks than Romo did
- 28:46Speaker 1: because down the stretch there in Minnesota the last week
- 28:49Speaker 1: the Giants game, they were giving him everything and that's
- 28:51Speaker 1: what made it look like he was the starter. So
- 28:54Speaker 1: if Romo hit more of his kicks, why did they
- 28:58Speaker 1: go with Borgalis. There's a couple of reasons I can
- 29:00Speaker 1: think of. I don't know for sure. You know, we'll
- 29:02Speaker 1: try to ask about it today. Part of it is,
- 29:05Speaker 1: I know some people roll their eyes that they were
- 29:07Speaker 1: loyal to the draft pick. It might be out of it,
- 29:10Speaker 1: but it can also be like the upside. Yeah, Borgoalis
- 29:14Speaker 1: was a better kicker in college, and I know Romo's young,
- 29:19Speaker 1: but Borgallis was better kicker in college than Romo was.
- 29:22Speaker 1: You see a ceiling with There is more of a
- 29:24Speaker 1: ceiling with Borgolis than there is with Romo. The other thing,
- 29:27Speaker 1: and we had talked about this a few weeks ago.
- 29:29Speaker 1: Borgalis did appear to be the better kickoff kicker. And
- 29:32Speaker 1: that's not insignificant. We can't really qualify that, quantify that,
- 29:38Speaker 1: thank you the way we do. Okay, Well, this guy
- 29:41Speaker 1: hit X number of field? Was this guy hit X number?
- 29:43Speaker 1: But just based on what they were running and the
- 29:46Speaker 1: results and how the coaching staff seem to look at it,
- 29:49Speaker 1: react to different kicks and things like that. Borgalis seemed
- 29:52Speaker 1: like the better kickoff kicker, which does matter, so odds
- 29:55Speaker 1: are It's probably a combination of all of those things.
- 29:57Speaker 1: I understand why people are surprised by that. It'd be great,
- 30:00Speaker 1: right if they can get Romo back on the practice squad.
- 30:02Speaker 1: Is insurance. I don't know how realistic that is through waivers.
- 30:05Speaker 1: He has to go through waivers. The Dolphins need a kicker.
- 30:07Speaker 1: I know a couple of other teams with the Dolphins stand out.
- 30:09Speaker 1: Jason Sanders report yesterday is banged up, but that would
- 30:14Speaker 1: be my guest. I know that's something that's that surprised
- 30:17Speaker 1: a lot of people. It always looked like Borgolis is
- 30:20Speaker 1: going to win the competition in terms of the usage
- 30:22Speaker 1: the last two Not always, but like the last two
- 30:24Speaker 1: three weeks, they were using Borgolis like he was a
- 30:27Speaker 1: starting kicker. They weren't operating like it was a competition.
- 30:30Speaker 1: You want to say, the numbers suggested differently. The numbers
- 30:32Speaker 1: suggested differently. You're not wrong, But if we were just
- 30:35Speaker 1: playing a predictive game, this is what it always looked like.
- 30:37Speaker 2: So I I have a take and I have a
- 30:39Speaker 2: question for you on this. So the first thing with uh,
- 30:43Speaker 2: like my take on it is that they probably gave
- 30:47Speaker 2: up on Chad Ryland a little too quickly, and I
- 30:50Speaker 2: know that that wasn't verable and it's a little bit Yeah.
- 30:52Speaker 1: That's also did they give up on him too quickly
- 30:54Speaker 1: or did he ultimately just need a change of scenery.
- 30:56Speaker 2: Maybe, But I guess my point is is not necessarily
- 30:59Speaker 2: specifically about the chat Ryan situation. Yeah, but I do
- 31:02Speaker 2: think kickers in general, for some kickers, it does take
- 31:05Speaker 2: some time too. There is a develop in the NFL.
- 31:09Speaker 2: It's obviously a very between the ears kind of position,
- 31:14Speaker 2: and there's a lot more pressure kicking in the NFL
- 31:16Speaker 2: than there is kicking in college.
- 31:18Speaker 1: And it's not a position where you want to be patient, right.
- 31:21Speaker 1: You don't really want to go through growing pains like
- 31:22Speaker 1: with the quarterback. The reward is so high and there's
- 31:24Speaker 1: so few good quarterbacks. You go through the growing pains
- 31:27Speaker 1: with the kicker. You may not want to do that,
- 31:29Speaker 1: but there is a history of kickers finding success after
- 31:31Speaker 1: struggling his rookies. By the waygalis this is everything practice
- 31:35Speaker 1: games forty six of fifty five Parker. Romo was thirty
- 31:40Speaker 1: nine of forty three, and three of those formases all
- 31:42Speaker 1: came on one day.
- 31:43Speaker 2: So I just wonder if maybe they said it was
- 31:47Speaker 2: close enough between Borgoalis and Romo. We still trust our
- 31:50Speaker 2: evaluation on Borgalis that he has a higher ceiling. So yeah,
- 31:54Speaker 2: we might have to live with some growing pains early on,
- 31:57Speaker 2: but we're going to go with it. Like, for example,
- 31:59Speaker 2: the fifty seven yarder that he missed, uh that was
- 32:02Speaker 2: against Minnesota, right or was the Giants, I don't know,
- 32:04Speaker 2: honing together he missed a fifty seven yard field goal
- 32:07Speaker 2: in the preseason and watching it happen live and then
- 32:12Speaker 2: I believe Rabel confirmed this afterwards. That was more of
- 32:14Speaker 2: an operational issue.
- 32:15Speaker 1: So there was that angle to Borgals had a couple
- 32:18Speaker 1: misses that were on bad snaps and bad.
- 32:20Speaker 2: Holes and they were like laid on the field and
- 32:22Speaker 2: maybe there was some confusion about which guy was kicking
- 32:25Speaker 2: or something like that, so they were laid on the
- 32:26Speaker 2: field and then they basically had to like put the
- 32:29Speaker 2: ball down with like one second on the play clock,
- 32:31Speaker 2: snap the football, get the ball off, and kick the ball.
- 32:34Speaker 2: And it was a shank. It wasn't close, but maybe
- 32:37Speaker 2: they chalked that one up to just bad operation. Yeah,
- 32:41Speaker 2: and then the forty nine yarder that he missed, maybe
- 32:43Speaker 2: that one was a real miss. But my point is
- 32:46Speaker 2: is that you drafted the guy. You spent a six
- 32:50Speaker 2: round pick on the guy. You obviously saw something in
- 32:53Speaker 2: him in terms of a ceiling as a draft pick
- 32:56Speaker 2: that if it was gonna be close enough between him
- 32:58Speaker 2: and Parker Romo, it probably it made sense to go
- 33:01Speaker 2: with the guy that you think has the higher ceiling.
- 33:03Speaker 2: And now we'll see, we'll see what happens. You know,
- 33:05Speaker 2: this is kicking, it's kind of it's volatile. We'll see
- 33:08Speaker 2: where this goes. Now, my other question for you was,
- 33:11Speaker 2: so Romo kicked in the Vikings game, he did not
- 33:15Speaker 2: kick in the Giants game. Right now, is there any
- 33:20Speaker 2: chance that they are trying to hide Parker room certainly?
- 33:23Speaker 2: That was the other takeaway that I had was maybe
- 33:28Speaker 2: they know Parker rome was an NFL kicker, and by
- 33:32Speaker 2: not having him kick in the preseason finale, or at
- 33:34Speaker 2: least exposing him to fewer He didn't kick at all
- 33:37Speaker 2: in the Minnesota joint practices either. They did one extended
- 33:40Speaker 2: kicking period and it was all Borgalis and the joint
- 33:43Speaker 2: practices in Minnesota as well. So I just wonder if
- 33:46Speaker 2: maybe there was a little bit too much I know
- 33:48Speaker 2: it's funny to say kicker hype, but like there was
- 33:49Speaker 2: maybe a little bit too much hype about how good
- 33:51Speaker 2: Parker Romo looked this summer, coming from people like us
- 33:55Speaker 2: in the media that they wanted to that Belichick used
- 33:59Speaker 2: to do this all the time. He wanted to hide him.
- 34:02Speaker 2: So that hopefully here today, in an hour or so,
- 34:04Speaker 2: we'll find out that he made it through wave half
- 34:06Speaker 2: an hour and if he made it through waivers and.
- 34:09Speaker 1: Yeah, he's no, I think there's absolutely a chance at that.
- 34:12Speaker 2: Would you so you would keep Barcaromo on the practice
- 34:15Speaker 2: squad if you could? Yeah, And then if Borgoalos struggles,
- 34:18Speaker 2: Like how long of a leash do you give Borgols?
- 34:20Speaker 1: I mean there's you need a lot of context there,
- 34:23Speaker 1: like how bad is he missing? Is it? You know?
- 34:26Speaker 1: What are the I mean, it's pressure on the kid,
- 34:28Speaker 1: it's pressure on Borgos if you keep Romo. But if
- 34:30Speaker 1: he can't handle that pressure, I don't know if he's
- 34:31Speaker 1: an NFL kicker. I'm not saying you can't, but.
- 34:34Speaker 2: Do you Uh, if he's he's missing, like Justin Roroster,
- 34:38Speaker 2: then maybe if he's hitting the porter potties, he'd probably
- 34:40Speaker 2: make the change sooner rather than later. Poor Justin ro Roster,
- 34:43Speaker 2: I feel like he's the He's the litmus test is
- 34:46Speaker 2: like are you better than hitting? And just so people realize,
- 34:50Speaker 2: like the goalposts are one place, the porter potties are
- 34:53Speaker 2: probably what fifteen to twenty yards to the left.
- 34:56Speaker 1: If anybody's ever played the NCAA football video game, yes
- 35:01Speaker 1: they made the kicking hard because college kickers are wild.
- 35:04Speaker 1: The like red miss is what you're talking.
- 35:08Speaker 2: Very video of it, I can understand. Yeah, not good.
- 35:11Speaker 2: All right, Moving on from the kickers, The other thing
- 35:14Speaker 2: I had on my list was obviously the offensive line battles.
- 35:19Speaker 2: The roster battles on offensive line, and officially I think
- 35:23Speaker 2: we can close the book on the Cold Strange era
- 35:25Speaker 2: for the Patriots that that seems like that is over
- 35:29Speaker 2: with Cole Strange. I would say probably the most accomplished
- 35:34Speaker 2: or most experienced name to get cut by the Patriots yesterday,
- 35:38Speaker 2: a guy former first round pick, of course, a guy
- 35:40Speaker 2: that's made twenty nine starts in this league for the Patriots,
- 35:43Speaker 2: that left guard so Cayden Wallace and Ben Brown beat
- 35:47Speaker 2: out Cole Strange for the roster with the Patriots. Now,
- 35:51Speaker 2: Brown I feel like is more the guy that beat
- 35:53Speaker 2: him out because he's got that position flex on the interior,
- 35:58Speaker 2: can play center, he can play guard. It's kind of
- 36:00Speaker 2: the same thing as Cole Strange. And I think ultimately
- 36:03Speaker 2: what happened with Cole Strange is that Ben Brown's a
- 36:06Speaker 2: better center than he is and it didn't ever look
- 36:09Speaker 2: right or look great for Cole Strange at center, And
- 36:13Speaker 2: with the way the summer has gone for Garrett Bradberry,
- 36:16Speaker 2: I do think there's some uncertainty at the center position
- 36:19Speaker 2: that they said we might actually need our backup center,
- 36:22Speaker 2: and we feel better about Ben Brown as a backup
- 36:24Speaker 2: center than we feel about Cole Strange as a backup center.
- 36:28Speaker 2: And then you get to the Cayden Wallace of it all.
- 36:30Speaker 2: Kayden Wallace has been repping with this coaching staff exclusively
- 36:33Speaker 2: at guard, but in a pinch, could he play tackle
- 36:37Speaker 2: and go out to write tackle if he absolutely had to?
- 36:39Speaker 2: Probably it's his college position. I wouldn't say it's quite
- 36:43Speaker 2: as on the level of a mic on WINNU, but
- 36:45Speaker 2: a similar idea of this guy's a natural guard, but
- 36:48Speaker 2: he's a tackle flex if needed, So he had that versatility.
- 36:53Speaker 2: But Cole Strange no longer in the picture here with
- 36:57Speaker 2: the Patriots.
- 36:57Speaker 1: Yeah, the writing was on the wall with just how
- 37:00Speaker 1: how his reps had been distributed. Would you bring him
- 37:04Speaker 1: back on the practice quadif he clears?
- 37:06Speaker 2: I don't think so, And I think it's mostly just
- 37:08Speaker 2: because I think for everybody a fresh.
- 37:10Speaker 1: Start, change with you. But the writing was on the wall.
- 37:14Speaker 1: Once Ben Brown started playing guard and had that multi
- 37:16Speaker 1: positional versatility, I think that was it. You know, he
- 37:21Speaker 1: started camp as the starting center at the starting guard,
- 37:24Speaker 1: sorry left guard, and just never gained any traction there
- 37:28Speaker 1: so went backwards. Yeah, it went backwards. It just it's unfortunate.
- 37:32Speaker 1: You know, he is the injury two years ago when
- 37:35Speaker 1: it started, when it felt like he had started building
- 37:37Speaker 1: some momentum. But that's just the NFL happens.
- 37:41Speaker 2: Yeah, So Cole Strange out Wallace Brown, And I'm still
- 37:46Speaker 2: holding out a little bit of hope for Caden Wallace.
- 37:48Speaker 2: It's only a second year's third round pick last year.
- 37:51Speaker 2: I don't know if that means that. My hope level
- 37:54Speaker 2: is like he's going to be a starter down the
- 37:56Speaker 2: line here, but there's still some value. And I know
- 37:58Speaker 2: you want more out of a third pick, especially on
- 38:00Speaker 2: the offensive line. But if he is a guard tackle
- 38:04Speaker 2: flex and he's a top backup in that role, that's
- 38:09Speaker 2: still a role, and that still has some value for
- 38:12Speaker 2: your roster, especially on a rookie contract. So I'm still
- 38:15Speaker 2: holding out a little bit of hope that with Wallace.
- 38:18Speaker 2: He hasn't played a ton of guard in his career
- 38:20Speaker 2: going back to college, so it's a new position for him.
- 38:23Speaker 2: If he can get guard down. I think there were
- 38:25Speaker 2: some flashes in the last preseason game of him, but
- 38:28Speaker 2: like the big thing with him on the preseason tape
- 38:32Speaker 2: was more just reps. It was like timing and body
- 38:35Speaker 2: control and balance up to the second level. Like he
- 38:38Speaker 2: was coming off his double teams a little too quickly.
- 38:40Speaker 2: He wasn't hitting his landmarks on his climbs. But like
- 38:43Speaker 2: that stuff isn't physical, like he can't do it. It's coachable,
- 38:48Speaker 2: it's details, it's knowing the position, it's repping the position.
- 38:52Speaker 2: So physically, I thought, play strength wise, leverage wise, foot
- 38:57Speaker 2: speed wise, he could be a representative guard in the NFL. Now,
- 39:02Speaker 2: they just got to get him comfortable at guard right
- 39:04Speaker 2: and maybe there is something there with Caden Wallace, so
- 39:06Speaker 2: I'm holding out a little bit of hope with him.
- 39:08Speaker 2: I'm glad they decided to go this route because frankly,
- 39:12Speaker 2: I had given up on Cold Strange. Oh, as everybody knows,
- 39:15Speaker 2: I never really was on Cole Strange to begin with,
- 39:18Speaker 2: but I really just didn't ever see it with Cole Strange.
- 39:21Speaker 2: I never thought that Cole Strange showed well with the Patriots,
- 39:25Speaker 2: even going back, and I think there were some times
- 39:28Speaker 2: where people said, well, he's been good when he's been healthy.
- 39:32Speaker 2: I just never saw that with Strange, Like I think
- 39:35Speaker 2: he was always someone that was in over his head
- 39:39Speaker 2: here in the league as a starter. So that's the
- 39:42Speaker 2: offensive line, the five that I expect, I think we
- 39:45Speaker 2: all expect to see week one, Campbell, Wilson, Bradberry on
- 39:49Speaker 2: when new Moses. I think that group is pretty much solidified.
- 39:52Speaker 2: I know that Vrabels left the door open to kind
- 39:55Speaker 2: of a competition there on the interior, but I think
- 39:58Speaker 2: they're best off with Ben Brown being the top backup
- 40:01Speaker 2: at center and left guard and rolling with Wilson and
- 40:05Speaker 2: brad Berry going into the season. Do you agree with that?
- 40:08Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 40:09Speaker 2: Yeah, so next one on the list was a quarterback.
- 40:16Speaker 2: There's a lot of buzz, a lot of chatter in
- 40:18Speaker 2: the media sphere about them needing a third quarterback. Obviously
- 40:22Speaker 2: Ben Woolridge is not here anymore. It's just Josh Dobbs
- 40:25Speaker 2: and Drake May. I think that you that was what
- 40:29Speaker 2: was happening all along. I don't think there was any
- 40:31Speaker 2: real opportunity there to keep three quarterbacks on the roster.
- 40:35Speaker 2: You have the practice squad to carry quarterbacks nowadays, but
- 40:39Speaker 2: could you see them claiming or signing They're definitely gonna
- 40:43Speaker 2: sign a quarterback. Yeah, practice squad just to have the arm.
- 40:46Speaker 2: But could you see them signing or claiming like a
- 40:49Speaker 2: legitimate backup competition for Josh Dobbs.
- 40:52Speaker 1: Maybe Now, there's not that many of those guys out there.
- 40:54Speaker 1: I know Tommy DeVito has been floated. Who are the
- 40:56Speaker 1: other quarterbacks?
- 40:57Speaker 2: I read a couple down the veto McCord, Zappi, Jay
- 41:02Speaker 2: Hayner got cut by New Orleans.
- 41:04Speaker 1: On j Cayner.
- 41:05Speaker 2: Those were sort of the guys that are kicking around.
- 41:07Speaker 2: It's not it's not very much.
- 41:08Speaker 1: But I've heard another name that interests me in there.
- 41:10Speaker 2: I can't remember who was I've heard McCord's name a
- 41:12Speaker 2: little bit, and obviously everybody's on to veto you know
- 41:15Speaker 2: that that one's been popular.
- 41:16Speaker 1: Mike White, Mike White. I like Mike White's arm, so
- 41:20Speaker 1: I would take Mike White.
- 41:21Speaker 2: He's always had an NFL arm.
- 41:22Speaker 1: Desmond ridder.
- 41:27Speaker 2: Less, so on Desmond ridder.
- 41:29Speaker 1: Okay, Hendon Hooker, No, you know, you know, I'd be
- 41:33Speaker 1: in on Taylor el GERZMA. But he's a practice squad guy.
- 41:35Speaker 2: Yeah. I was watching the other day in the background
- 41:38Speaker 2: and I think he was with the Packers.
- 41:39Speaker 1: Right, Yeah, he had a good, good camp.
- 41:41Speaker 2: Yeah he was. I was like, oh, that's Alice's guy.
- 41:44Speaker 1: Did Taylor Heineke get waved?
- 41:46Speaker 2: Yes?
- 41:47Speaker 1: So Heinikey, there was who's there was one other who
- 41:51Speaker 1: would like started games? Who was it? Oh Trevor Simeon.
- 41:56Speaker 1: So the point being like, if you're going to add
- 41:58Speaker 1: a guy to the fifty three, you're bringing in somebody
- 42:01Speaker 1: who's pushing Dobbs for the backup job. If they're worried
- 42:04Speaker 1: about Dobbs and what he did this summer, do.
- 42:06Speaker 2: You say they don't seem overly worried about it, to.
- 42:08Speaker 1: Which they don't. But I'm saying like if they were
- 42:10Speaker 1: going to Ye. So I know these names aren't going
- 42:12Speaker 1: to get anybody excited, but Sime and de veto Heinike, Like,
- 42:18Speaker 1: I just don't think you're gonna do Zappy because of
- 42:20Speaker 1: what it would do with the fan base. But like,
- 42:22Speaker 1: those are the kind of guys to me, you're going
- 42:24Speaker 1: to add to the fifty three somebody who could actually
- 42:26Speaker 1: who started games in the league, who you could turn
- 42:28Speaker 1: to rare or maybe Snoop Huntley. I you know, if
- 42:32Speaker 1: he's the kind of guy, he's been around, he has
- 42:35Speaker 1: some experienced pro bowler, I think technically, right, technically, outside
- 42:39Speaker 1: of that, if you're just looking for a scout team quarterback,
- 42:41Speaker 1: you keep that guy in the practice squad. Yeah, Like
- 42:43Speaker 1: that's that's all that is.
- 42:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I think there's a chance. I don't know how
- 42:48Speaker 2: high of a chance there is, but I do think
- 42:50Speaker 2: there's a chance. Now we do this every year with
- 42:53Speaker 2: the with the practice squad versus in waivers and all
- 42:56Speaker 2: that good stuff, more guys make it through waivers than
- 42:59Speaker 2: you think.
- 42:59Speaker 1: I think, Uh, who's somebody's talking about it yesterday? Oh,
- 43:02Speaker 1: Phil Perry. Two percent of players get claimed, right.
- 43:04Speaker 2: Two percent of players get claimed, So a lot of
- 43:07Speaker 2: these veteran quarterbacks that we're talking about that have some
- 43:11Speaker 2: name value that you got, Like everybody knows who Tommy
- 43:13Speaker 2: DeVito is like that have some name recognition. You'd be
- 43:17Speaker 2: surprised that a lot of these guys that are gonna
- 43:19Speaker 2: end up going unclaimed and you can sign those guys
- 43:22Speaker 2: to practice squadse. Now there's no rules against.
- 43:24Speaker 1: That, You're right, But there's also a tipping point of
- 43:27Speaker 1: even if they don't get claimed, right, is de Vito
- 43:30Speaker 1: gonna get fifty you can still sign him to the
- 43:32Speaker 1: fifty three after they go and claimed, Like Defto's somebody
- 43:35Speaker 1: even if he doesn't get unclaimed, I would think is
- 43:37Speaker 1: going to have offers to be on a team's fifty
- 43:39Speaker 1: three man roster.
- 43:40Speaker 2: If he gets. If he goes unclaimed, though, then don't
- 43:42Speaker 2: I'd have to imagine that it would take an injury
- 43:45Speaker 2: or something like that to somebody's backup quarterback for him
- 43:48Speaker 2: to sign to a fifty three. Well why not just
- 43:49Speaker 2: claim them?
- 43:51Speaker 3: Uh?
- 43:51Speaker 1: You if you have someone with the contract you don't want.
- 43:55Speaker 2: Or isn't he on his rookie contract, I don't know.
- 43:57Speaker 1: Maybe you only want to put in X number of
- 44:00Speaker 1: claims based on the way your roster is structured, and
- 44:03Speaker 1: then you get through claims, you can get everybody you want. Okay, well,
- 44:06Speaker 1: now we have a spot that's available, Like there's there
- 44:08Speaker 1: could be any number of reasons it happens. It happens
- 44:11Speaker 1: a lot, and because sometimes you'll hear of guys. I
- 44:14Speaker 1: actually there was just a story somebody just had a
- 44:16Speaker 1: post about Sam Ellinger did this. Sam Ellinger had fifty
- 44:21Speaker 1: three man roster offers but turned them down because he
- 44:25Speaker 1: wanted to go to what he felt was the best situation,
- 44:27Speaker 1: which was Denver's practice squad. He felt like that was
- 44:29Speaker 1: a better situation for him than somebody's fifty three, which
- 44:32Speaker 1: can happen. Like you can absolutely be in that spot
- 44:35Speaker 1: where you look at it and say, all right, I'm
- 44:37Speaker 1: on the fifty three man roster here, but they could
- 44:39Speaker 1: cut me any week. If I'm on the practice squad,
- 44:41Speaker 1: I probably have more job security because they're not going
- 44:43Speaker 1: to move me from that. So there could be any
- 44:46Speaker 1: number of reasons that a guy doesn't get claimed and
- 44:49Speaker 1: then still ultimately signed to a fifty three man roster,
- 44:51Speaker 1: especially at quarterback.
- 44:53Speaker 2: Okay, fair enough. I just wouldn't be surprised if some
- 44:55Speaker 2: of the names that we've listed off or on practice
- 44:57Speaker 2: squads to start to see.
- 44:59Speaker 1: Yeah, they won't all be but DeVito's one real I'm like,
- 45:01Speaker 1: DeVito's probably gonna be on a fifty three man even
- 45:04Speaker 1: if he doesn't get claimed. Now, maybe it is the
- 45:06Speaker 1: Patriots fifty three. Maybe they deem him worthy of the
- 45:08Speaker 1: fifty three man spot. But you know, if he can
- 45:10Speaker 1: go to I don't know what the quarterback depth situation
- 45:13Speaker 1: is in other teams, but you know, because I just
- 45:17Speaker 1: I know they cut two quarterbacks just looking at that
- 45:19Speaker 1: list the Packers. The Packers want more depth, they'll put
- 45:21Speaker 1: to Vito on the practice squad, or he can come
- 45:23Speaker 1: beyond the roster. Here, Josh Dobbs is there, Like, what's
- 45:27Speaker 1: gonna happen. I'm gonna be there for three weeks. They're
- 45:29Speaker 1: gonna decide they like Dobbs better. I'm gonna get cut,
- 45:32Speaker 1: or I go to the practice practice squad where they
- 45:34Speaker 1: don't have a ton of quarterback depth. I'm not taking
- 45:36Speaker 1: up a roster spot, so I'm not in danger being cut.
- 45:39Speaker 1: I get a full season of paychecks. Like that could be.
- 45:43Speaker 1: It would depend on the player. There'd be a lot
- 45:45Speaker 1: of variables in play, but I'm not ruling it out.
- 45:46Speaker 2: So the last thing on the quarterbacks and then we
- 45:48Speaker 2: can move on. Is there any there was There was
- 45:52Speaker 2: a narrative when they traded Joe Milton that they traded
- 45:55Speaker 2: Joe Milton to clear the runway. I think was Nay
- 45:57Speaker 2: Grease's exact verbiage, Drake May, is there any credence sort
- 46:05Speaker 2: like does that factor into signing a third quarterback? Because
- 46:09Speaker 2: I don't think it will happen again with Zappy. I
- 46:12Speaker 2: don't think people. I don't think that's he's coming here.
- 46:14Speaker 2: I don't think that's happening again.
- 46:15Speaker 1: Okay, So that's stream example.
- 46:18Speaker 2: I think we're I think we're done with the Bailey
- 46:20Speaker 2: Zappy experience here in New England. With that being said,
- 46:24Speaker 2: a guy like Tommy DeVito if you saw what happened
- 46:28Speaker 2: with Tommy DeVito in New York.
- 46:29Speaker 1: Yeah, but something that was like he's one of them.
- 46:32Speaker 2: I know, but I'm just kid. It's is there any
- 46:38Speaker 2: chance that they think about that? And I'm not saying
- 46:41Speaker 2: it could be DeVito, could be somebody else, but someone
- 46:43Speaker 2: that's had starting experience in the league, that's had a
- 46:46Speaker 2: taste of success. And if let's say the first month
- 46:49Speaker 2: of the season does not go well for the Patriots
- 46:51Speaker 2: or Drake May. All of a sudden, you get Tommy Cutlets,
- 46:54Speaker 2: you know, bringing in the Cutlets. Right, They're crazy for thinking.
- 46:59Speaker 1: The most popular not a bad team as the backup quarterback. Right, So,
- 47:03Speaker 1: which Bailey Zappy was that? Bailey Zay proved that in spades. Yeah,
- 47:08Speaker 1: there's always gonna be that element. It probably Look do
- 47:11Speaker 1: you remember when they claimed Matt Corral off waivers? There
- 47:13Speaker 1: were there were people who jumped from Zappy to Corral.
- 47:16Speaker 1: There were a bunch of people that thought Mant Corral
- 47:18Speaker 1: somehow was going to be the future here. Yeah, but
- 47:22Speaker 1: I think you have Josh Dobbs almost as that buffer
- 47:26Speaker 1: because okay, well that guy whoever he is, has to
- 47:28Speaker 1: pass Dobbs sure, right. If I don't know, maybe people
- 47:31Speaker 1: will just say, no, script Dobbs was bad Drake May's play. Yeah,
- 47:35Speaker 1: it's probably a little bit of it.
- 47:36Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 47:37Speaker 1: I don't think the player is out there of that caliber.
- 47:40Speaker 1: De Vito is probably the closest. But I think some
- 47:43Speaker 1: of that was the Jersey guy playing for the Giants, right,
- 47:47Speaker 1: if he had played at Foxborough High, maybe it's another story.
- 47:52Speaker 1: But I don't know. I don't think so outside of Zappi,
- 47:56Speaker 1: which is a very unique situation because he has this,
- 47:58Speaker 1: I don't think happening. I don't think that's it. I
- 48:01Speaker 1: don't think Zappi's happening either.
- 48:02Speaker 2: Okay, so that's the quarterbacks. A couple more things and
- 48:06Speaker 2: then we'll open it up. I promise. Now I went
- 48:10Speaker 2: out of order. Now I've lost my place. Oh to
- 48:13Speaker 2: u pas make it right at Efton Chisholm and Elijah Ponter.
- 48:16Speaker 2: So that's now twenty one out of the last twenty
- 48:19Speaker 2: two seasons at the Patriots going back to two thousand
- 48:21Speaker 2: and four, have carried an Okay, I have the list,
- 48:25Speaker 2: I do it. Do you want me to list all
- 48:27Speaker 2: of them? I know there's too many.
- 48:29Speaker 1: No, because I want to make sure you get every
- 48:30Speaker 1: single one of them.
- 48:31Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I did get her for missing one guy
- 48:33Speaker 2: that made didn't make it to week one but made
- 48:37Speaker 2: the initial roster. Do you really want all of them?
- 48:40Speaker 2: Do you really want me.
- 48:41Speaker 1: To do you?
- 48:41Speaker 2: Miss?
- 48:42Speaker 1: Uh?
- 48:43Speaker 2: I don't even remember the guy's name now, Randall Gay,
- 48:46Speaker 2: Mike Wright, Peer Woods, Devin hur Hran, Matt Gutierrez, Gary Guyton,
- 48:52Speaker 2: who's a good player, Gary, Brett Lockett, Brian Hoyer, of course,
- 48:56Speaker 2: Steven Airy, Kyle Love, Dane Fletcher, Danny Aiken, Justin Francis,
- 49:02Speaker 2: Marcus Forston, Brandon Bolden.
- 49:04Speaker 1: Brandon Bolden shout out yeah.
- 49:06Speaker 2: Twenty thirteen they had five Wait so.
- 49:08Speaker 1: You missed Jeff Tarpinion again?
- 49:09Speaker 2: Oh shoot yeah twenty eleven, Jeff Tarpini, Stop missing Jeff Tarpinion.
- 49:13Speaker 2: Twenty thirteen they had won two, three, four, five, six guys.
- 49:17Speaker 2: That roster was obviously in a turnover period. Joe Vilano,
- 49:21Speaker 2: Kemberrol Thompkins, Zack Suddfield, Zack Sudfeld, Zachary sud filled the
- 49:25Speaker 2: Gronka preseason, Josh Klein, Chris Barker and then punter Ryan Allen.
- 49:31Speaker 2: This is where to give him his flowers. This is
- 49:35Speaker 2: where Belichick hits a heater with the udfas twenty fourteen,
- 49:39Speaker 2: Malcolm Butler YEP twenty fifteen. Chris Harper, Justin Coleman, David Andrews.
- 49:43Speaker 2: We all remember Harper's muff Like that's a big deal obviously, David,
- 49:47Speaker 2: like David Andrews, is a Patriot legend, Patriot Hall of Famer.
- 49:50Speaker 1: Justin Coleman, underrated NFL underrated player. Did he go to
- 49:53Speaker 1: Seattle or Detroit?
- 49:54Speaker 2: Seattle? Solid NFL player, David Andrews Gonna wear a red
- 49:58Speaker 2: jacket some day. Jonathan Jones, d J Foster the next year.
- 50:02Speaker 2: So Jonathan Jones twenty sixteen, Absolute hit twenty seventeen. Adam Butler,
- 50:06Speaker 2: good NFL player.
- 50:07Speaker 1: He's sill in the league, I think, Yeah.
- 50:09Speaker 2: Cole Crosston, Jacob Hollister, Harvey Longie.
- 50:11Speaker 1: Jacob Hollster I think is still hanging around as well.
- 50:13Speaker 2: Yeah, Adam Butler is a solid rotational interior pass rusher.
- 50:16Speaker 2: Good player twenty eighteen. We can beat goes on.
- 50:20Speaker 1: J C.
- 50:20Speaker 2: Jackson very good one. All Pro twenty nineteen. Continues to
- 50:25Speaker 2: just hit home runs here Kobe Myers, Gunnery Zchewski in
- 50:29Speaker 2: twenty nineteen.
- 50:30Speaker 1: Another All Pro twenty twenty, JJ Taylor JJ Taylor still
- 50:35Speaker 1: in the league somewhere. I know, yeah, because I saw
- 50:37Speaker 1: the other day somebody Adhaim on a ross projection. He's
- 50:39Speaker 1: still hanging around.
- 50:40Speaker 2: All right, you're gonna love this one. Twenty twenty one.
- 50:42Speaker 1: Yeah, you know it. You're in twenty twenty one.
- 50:46Speaker 2: You know it. In stadium practice, Oh, Quinn Nordin Quinn
- 50:49Speaker 2: Nordan Quinn Nordan made the initial riser.
- 50:52Speaker 1: I don't think he made it. So this is where
- 50:53Speaker 1: we started having to parse it because they had one
- 50:56Speaker 1: year where somebody made where a UDIF it was on
- 50:58Speaker 1: the initial roster but not on the week one, And
- 51:00Speaker 1: then I think Taylor was on the week one but
- 51:02Speaker 1: not on the initial roster. So we started splitting hairs
- 51:05Speaker 1: at one point with this. Yeah, but it was it was,
- 51:08Speaker 1: it was crawling, it was limping in the end at
- 51:11Speaker 1: the end by nor Dean.
- 51:12Speaker 2: Yeah. Twenty twenty two, Brendan Schooler good fine. DeMarcus Mitchell
- 51:19Speaker 2: who did not hang around too much, but Brennan Schooler,
- 51:22Speaker 2: he was.
- 51:23Speaker 1: He was the cour special teamer for a little bit.
- 51:24Speaker 2: He was Brendan Scoller obviously a first team All Pro
- 51:27Speaker 2: special teamer, so that that was a good one. Twenty
- 51:30Speaker 2: twenty three none, that was when they streak ended.
- 51:33Speaker 1: But they only had three udfa's that he was Malik Cunningham.
- 51:36Speaker 1: Milike Cunningham is Jordan Halig and Johnny Lumpkin.
- 51:40Speaker 2: So I would say Milike Cunningham is probably the best
- 51:42Speaker 2: player out of those three. He was in Baltimore's training
- 51:45Speaker 2: camp again this year on their ninety man roster, he
- 51:47Speaker 2: did not make it.
- 51:48Speaker 1: Johnny Umkin was with the Packers, he got cut. Okay,
- 51:51Speaker 1: I take Johnny Lumpkin back and he's a blocking tight.
- 51:53Speaker 2: End twenty twenty four, and this player stuck on the
- 51:56Speaker 2: roster this year as well. Del pettis yep, so he's
- 51:59Speaker 2: made it two years in a row, and them now
- 52:01Speaker 2: twenty twenty five, Elijah Ponder and Eftin Chisholm aka Julian
- 52:08Speaker 2: Edelman aka Danny Handola.
- 52:09Speaker 1: So the reason I kind of wanted you to go
- 52:12Speaker 1: through that, other than making sure you credited Jeff Tarpinion.
- 52:14Speaker 2: Sorry I forgot Jeff Tarpinion.
- 52:16Speaker 1: There's a wide range players on there. Yeah, so like,
- 52:18Speaker 1: well we'll see what these guys becoming can there's a
- 52:21Speaker 1: lot of range as to what these udfas can be.
- 52:23Speaker 2: To be fair, though, there is a lot of hits
- 52:25Speaker 2: on that list for undrafted rookie free agents, Like there's
- 52:29Speaker 2: that's a pretty good list, even guys like we mentioned
- 52:33Speaker 2: a guy like Gary Goyden. Gary Guiten's not Malcolm Butler,
- 52:37Speaker 2: and he's not David Andrews or Jonathan Jones, but Gary
- 52:41Speaker 2: Goeiten was a solid linebacker.
- 52:42Speaker 1: Serviceable player, which if you get again, this is the
- 52:44Speaker 1: guy you didn't draft, right, you just got you found.
- 52:49Speaker 2: So I don't think either one of us are too
- 52:52Speaker 2: surprised that Ponder and Chishm made the roster.
- 52:54Speaker 1: Though No, Ponder was a little bit of a late
- 52:57Speaker 1: push for me. I just thought Truman Jones was having
- 52:59Speaker 1: a good camp by thought they'd keep Bradon Swinston for
- 53:01Speaker 1: the upside. But he Ponder made that clear the last week,
- 53:04Speaker 1: week and a half.
- 53:05Speaker 2: Special teams obviously a big impact there will you have.
- 53:09Speaker 2: I don't know if he's gonna play a ton on
- 53:10Speaker 2: defense as a rookie. We'll see if he has a
- 53:14Speaker 2: game day role as well, maybe as a corese special teamer.
- 53:17Speaker 2: He does push for a game day roll. And then
- 53:19Speaker 2: of course Chisholm, I don't after that drive in Minnesota
- 53:23Speaker 2: a couple of weeks ago in the second preseason game,
- 53:26Speaker 2: the book was close on like Chishm was making this team. Yeah,
- 53:29Speaker 2: I don't think there was any question or any doubt
- 53:31Speaker 2: with Chishm there that that conversation ended when he went
- 53:35Speaker 2: nuclear on that one drive. Four catches, sixty three yards
- 53:39Speaker 2: and a touchdown on one drive against the twos and
- 53:42Speaker 2: that that was all she wrote. That was afton Chisholm
- 53:45Speaker 2: on the team. So that was your UDFA check in
- 53:50Speaker 2: two more one. Uh, that was just near and dear
- 53:53Speaker 2: to my heart, Marty Mapu making the roster outline back.
- 53:57Speaker 2: I love it. Never wrong, just early Marty Mapu linebacker
- 54:01Speaker 2: in full swaying now gets a little bit of help
- 54:04Speaker 2: with Julyan Device starting the year on ir so that
- 54:07Speaker 2: kind of opened the door. But he beats out cam
- 54:10Speaker 2: Riley Monte Rice like some of those other guys for
- 54:12Speaker 2: that fourth linebacker spot. I am cautiously excited about Martey
- 54:18Speaker 2: Mopu playing linebacker. I think that he might actually be
- 54:22Speaker 2: a serviceable coverage linebacker and special teamer. You play him
- 54:26Speaker 2: on third downs obvious past situations. I think there's a
- 54:29Speaker 2: chance here for Martin Mapu to stick because they don't
- 54:32Speaker 2: necessarily have linebackers outside of him that I feel great
- 54:36Speaker 2: about in man to man coverage on backs and tight ends.
- 54:39Speaker 2: Like I'm not putting him on brock Bowers in Week one, right,
- 54:42Speaker 2: but if they play a team that has like a
- 54:44Speaker 2: more run of the mill tight end or a running
- 54:46Speaker 2: back out of the backfield, I feel a lot better
- 54:49Speaker 2: about Marte Mapu covering those types of guys than Christian
- 54:53Speaker 2: Ellis or Robert Splain. Am I am I crazy for
- 54:55Speaker 2: thinking that no, no set seems like he's better at
- 54:59Speaker 2: it than those guys. So I'm I'm I'm excited. I'm
- 55:04Speaker 2: you know, obviously I've been pumping the tires and banging
- 55:08Speaker 2: the table for Marte mo Mapu to play a linebacker.
- 55:10Speaker 2: I'm glad that they finally moved him there. It obviously
- 55:13Speaker 2: fits in this defense because you want those linebackers to
- 55:16Speaker 2: be faster, more sidelined to sideline players, so you don't
- 55:19Speaker 2: necessarily need them to be doing you know, holding up
- 55:22Speaker 2: blockers and taking on pulling guards and like all that
- 55:25Speaker 2: good stuff that they used to do in the old defense.
- 55:27Speaker 2: That's not necessarily the way that they're gonna use their
- 55:30Speaker 2: linebackers this year. So his skill set definitely can fit
- 55:33Speaker 2: what they're trying to do. So that's the roster. I
- 55:36Speaker 2: think that, like we said, off the top, no like
- 55:39Speaker 2: real surprises, Like I wasn't blown away by anything. This
- 55:42Speaker 2: was not Cam Newton getting cut in twenty twenty one
- 55:45Speaker 2: level of a cut down day, but still some intrigue
- 55:48Speaker 2: and still some interesting things to break down. So we'll
- 55:50Speaker 2: open it up to you guys here in a second.

- 56:55Speaker 2: take your emails. Thanks for hanging on, Sean and Vancouver
- 56:58Speaker 2: you're up first. What's up, Sean?
- 57:00Speaker 4: Hey, guys, I'm actually in Montreal right now, but yeah,
- 57:04Speaker 4: still from Vancouver. So the question I have is we
- 57:09Speaker 4: spoke about this a while ago. Jack Westover made the
- 57:12Speaker 4: team as we expected, but Evan, you were saying if
- 57:15Speaker 4: another full back was cut, they might change that. So
- 57:19Speaker 4: what do you think the chances are that they'll pick
- 57:22Speaker 4: up Yakub Johnson now that he was cut from the Texans.
- 57:26Speaker 2: Yeah, thanks for the call. Sean in Montreal, moving around Canada,
- 57:31Speaker 2: ID no inside information whatsoever on Yakub Johnson. I'm still
- 57:34Speaker 2: going to say it's high. I think there's a high
- 57:35Speaker 2: chance that Yakub Johnson is on this team. Let's say
- 57:39Speaker 2: by the end of the day today or tomorrow. It
- 57:41Speaker 2: might be the practice squad, because not every team needs
- 57:44Speaker 2: a full back, right, so it might be the practice
- 57:46Speaker 2: squad at first. But I never I was impressed by
- 57:50Speaker 2: how quickly Jack Westover picked up the role. In terms
- 57:52Speaker 2: of the processing and the mental aspect of it. Full
- 57:56Speaker 2: back is one of those things where there is some
- 57:58Speaker 2: processing you have to. I think the biggest thing is
- 58:01Speaker 2: is that you want to make your offensive lineman right.
- 58:03Speaker 2: So if your offensive lineman gets beat at the first level,
- 58:06Speaker 2: you want to take first color and block the guy
- 58:09Speaker 2: that's the most the biggest threat to the ball carrier,
- 58:12Speaker 2: even if that's not necessarily your assignment. So there is
- 58:15Speaker 2: some post snap recognition or processing that it takes to
- 58:19Speaker 2: play full back, just to keep you know, on your
- 58:22Speaker 2: pie's and q's. It's not always going to be the
- 58:24Speaker 2: guy that you draw it up to be that you're
- 58:26Speaker 2: gonna block, so you do have to make adjustments on
- 58:28Speaker 2: the fly. I was impressed with the way that Westover
- 58:31Speaker 2: adjusted to that, but I still look at him, and
- 58:34Speaker 2: I look at his build and the way he carries
- 58:37Speaker 2: his way. I still think he's a little bit of
- 58:40Speaker 2: an upright, you know, uh taller kind.
- 58:44Speaker 1: Of listed the same build as Devlin and Johnson.
- 58:47Speaker 2: He's not He's not built like's not built like those guys.
- 58:51Speaker 1: No, I'm with you. I was surprised when I saw
- 58:53Speaker 1: that they're going to add a fullback. I feel pretty
- 58:56Speaker 1: confident about that, whether Johnson or somebody else. The one
- 58:58Speaker 1: thing I've seen people point out it's a fair point.
- 59:01Speaker 1: With Yakub Johnson, fallbacks generally don't have very long careers. Now,
- 59:07Speaker 1: if he wants to still play, I think he can
- 59:09Speaker 1: still play, but he is at seventy games. I think
- 59:12Speaker 1: James Devilin played eighty three, so you know, if he's good,
- 59:17Speaker 1: he might have won season.
- 59:18Speaker 2: Left.
- 59:19Speaker 1: Now all you need him for is really this season.
- 59:20Speaker 1: Then you can readdress it or brock Lamp he comes
- 59:22Speaker 1: back or whatever.
- 59:23Speaker 2: But yeah, it's happening. I'm telling you, I have no
- 59:29Speaker 2: inside information, but it's I.
- 59:31Speaker 1: Just hit noon. So I thought when you said that,
- 59:33Speaker 1: you really happened, because we're gonna get.
- 59:35Speaker 2: No, he's not. He's he's an invested veteran, so he's not.
- 59:38Speaker 2: He doesn't have to go through waivers. But I I
- 59:42Speaker 2: think that they're going to bring back Yakub Johnson because
- 59:46Speaker 2: he's just more traditionally. I know maybe they are listed
- 59:49Speaker 2: at the same size, but based off the eyes and
- 59:52Speaker 2: I think the biggest thing is just flexibility and leverage
- 59:56Speaker 2: to get underneath blocks. I still think Westover is truly
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: a tight end. Like he blocks up right, he blocks higher,
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: whereas like a guy like Yakub Johnson or James Devil,
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: and they were so good at getting underneath guys and
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: really leveraging blocks. I still don't look at west Over now.
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: The one thing in to be pro Westover just for
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: a second, just to play Devil's advocate. He definitely has
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: a little bit more versatility than a guy like Yakub Johnson,
- 1:00:23Speaker 2: where in theory he could catch some passes coming out
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: of the backfield. I don't know if you're ever going
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: to really target Yakub Johnson in the progression, like maybe
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: if he's a checkdown or a backside checkdown or leak
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: out into the flat, you might get to him eventually
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: at some point. But west Over, because of his tight
- 1:00:41Speaker 2: end background, you know, I could see west Over running
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: routes like I could see him coming out of the
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: backfield and getting into the scene or the rail, you know,
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: out on the wheel like things like that, Like he
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: could potentially do that. So there's a little bit more
- 1:00:55Speaker 2: I would say, like he's more of like a move
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: tight end or an h back then just like a
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: traditional fullback. So if they want to have that role
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: be a little bit more dynamic in terms of pass catching,
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: I suppose you could make that argument that Westover could
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: go ahead and do that. But if you're just looking
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: for the battering Ram, the James Devlin of it all,
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: then Yakub Johnson coming back to this team, I think
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: makes a whole lot of sense. Hugh is in Atlanta.
- 1:01:21Speaker 2: What's up, Hugh. We'll get Hugh back on the line.
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: He's been trying. Do you want my practice squad? I
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: know we're gonna do this at the end of the
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: of the day, probably anyways, get it before.
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: I'm hoping we get any second.
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: Now, well, we'll get the waiver claims. Practice squad will
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: be a little bit slower to fill out. So here
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: are the guys that I wrote down that I feel
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: like I would want back on the practice squad because
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: my opinion really matters.
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: Real quick, Kyle Hamilton for your one hundred million dollar extension.
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: Resets the safety market. Yep, let's take h I think
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: he's on here, and then we'll do my practice squad.
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: All right, here, you're there, Hey, what's up you?
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: Hey?
- 1:02:02Speaker 5: So I just I just I'm prob you guys, tell
- 1:02:07Speaker 5: me you.
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: Turn them up just a little bit. We can't we
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: can't hear him too well? What's that ce all? Right,
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: try again. What do you got y? Yeah? We go?
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: Oh man, you all right? He call it? Call back
- 1:02:21Speaker 2: in and we'll try one more time. I'll give you
- 1:02:23Speaker 2: my practice squad. Here we go, all right. So here
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: I have fourteen guys that were in camp with the Patriots.
- 1:02:30Speaker 2: David Olgiga doesn't count. They can sign him as a
- 1:02:33Speaker 2: free spot as an international pathway player, so he doesn't count.
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: And then I also did right down a quarterback three.
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: I did your placeholder thing, and I put a quarterback
- 1:02:42Speaker 2: three as a fifteen guy. Now they can carry sixteen.
- 1:02:45Speaker 2: So I would say that either I'm going to be
- 1:02:48Speaker 2: wrong or which is most likely, or maybe they'll they'll
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: sign some guys from out of house that are practice
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: squad players. But here were the fourteen guys that were
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: in camp with the Patriots that I'd like to see
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: them keep and continue to work with. Miles Battle, Yep,
- 1:03:02Speaker 2: Brayden Swinson, Kobe Minor, Truman, Jones, John Giles, Parker, Romo
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: g Scott Junior, Jeremiah Webb, Jack Conley, Mackai Butler. Jamichael
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: Hasty is a vested veteran, but you could sign him
- 1:03:20Speaker 2: to the practice squad as such. Terrell Jennings, cam Riley,
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: and Javari Retzi. I think of all fourteen of those
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: guys I thought showed enough in the preseason and in
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: the practices that i'd be I'd be. I'd call that
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: my ideal practice squad.
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: Did you know Jeremiah Webb on there?
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: I did have Jeremy Webb, and you didn't have Warrig,
- 1:03:41Speaker 2: I didn't I have Woolridge. I have a fifteen spot
- 1:03:44Speaker 2: reserved for a third quarterback yep, placeholder, yep. Was there
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: anybody that I missed?
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: So if I had to go through mine Miles Battle, Yes,
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: Jack Conley, yep. G Scott, Jamichael Hasty, Terrell Jennings, Truman Jones,
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: Kobe Minor. I'm not gonna count a Legg. I'm just
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: going to sixteen. Parker Romo, Braden Swinson, Jeremiah Webb. That's ten.
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: Kyle Pecko. I thought about Kyle and so that's eleven.
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: I thought about Kyle Peco. I thought Kyle Pecko had
- 1:04:19Speaker 2: a nice preseason and probably just caught on a little
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: bit too late.
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: Yeah, and he has the familiarity with Rabel.
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: I thought about him as another vestigation that would be
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: my group. Now I think it's going to be pretty
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: significantly new guys. I think around half new guys, just
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: based on the way Vrabel stocked. And that'll be the quarterback,
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: that'll maybe be a full back. Maybe it's a different
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: tight end because Dupree is a pure pass catcher. Maybe
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: they keep I could see them keeping two tight ends. Scott, Yeah, yeah, yeah, Scott,
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: Thank you, Scott. And then there's also the elements of
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: all right, if they claim guys on waivers, right, like,
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: all right, you know whoever they cut, like Javon Baker,
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: You're gonna try to get there if they cut him,
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: or Kite Wallace if they cut him. Those to me
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: are like the first two guys maybe born who are off.
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: I guess that's the other question. I put this on
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: on Twitter last night. I did a poll, Evan, I
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: did a poll on Twitter. Oh fancy how many new
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: players will be added to the Patriots fifty three man
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: roster between the initial roster in Week one and did zero,
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: one to two, three to four and five plus.
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: I'm going to go one to two. I think it's
- 1:05:17Speaker 2: gonna be less than people think.
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: People were overwhelmingly in the three to four.
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: I think it's going to be less than people think.
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: I think it's going to be three to four.
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: I think it's going to be less. I could be wrong.
- 1:05:27Speaker 2: I just knowing what we know about waivers, and if
- 1:05:32Speaker 2: they had carried, if they had put born on ir
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: and maybe even carried fifty two guys, and I would
- 1:05:37Speaker 2: be with the Lions.
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: Keep fifty I think I saw that.
- 1:05:41Speaker 2: Yeah, teams have done that all. You know, the Patriots
- 1:05:44Speaker 2: did it very famously with Bill in the beginning. I
- 1:05:46Speaker 2: think he only kept fifty two guys. So it's been
- 1:05:50Speaker 2: done many times. I think if I'm just looking at
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: the practice squad guys that we were talking about, the
- 1:05:55Speaker 2: guys I feel really strongly about that. I want back
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: that I pound the table for Miles Battle. I think
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: that not only in terms of playing cornerback, but I
- 1:06:06Speaker 2: also think they have a special team's developmental plan in
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: mind for him.
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: Yeah, Miles Battle.
- 1:06:11Speaker 2: Truman Jones, who I thought made the team. I had
- 1:06:15Speaker 2: him on my unofficial fifties three man roster projection. I
- 1:06:18Speaker 2: thought he was gonna make it.
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: Thought John Giles I think has been Did I not
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: say John Giles before I meant to say John Giles?
- 1:06:23Speaker 2: I think John Giles has flashed. I would keep.
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: John Giles, I keep him in Web around.
- 1:06:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I think John Giles. I'm a little higher on
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: Giles than Web, but I keep both of them. And
- 1:06:34Speaker 2: then Parker Romo should be here.
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: He's he showed some juices a.
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: He did. That's fair.
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: So that's why I keep like because that's going to
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: be an important role this year that I think people
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: don't realize.
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: Yeah, that's fair. So I that's the way I look
- 1:06:51Speaker 2: at it right now. In terms of the practice squad,
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: it'd be interesting to see how many of the guys
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: that are on assigned to the practice squad were with
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: the team in camp, because that might be where you
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: have the turnover, Like I said, one to two guys
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: in terms of the fifty three man roster, but the
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: practice squad, it might be that might be worth They
- 1:07:08Speaker 2: use is like kind of a tryout basis to get
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: some new bodies in here. All right, let's try one
- 1:07:14Speaker 2: more time here. This is your last chance though, all right,
- 1:07:16Speaker 2: what do you got here?
- 1:07:18Speaker 3: All right?
- 1:07:19Speaker 6: You guys got you now?
- 1:07:20Speaker 3: Yes?
- 1:07:20Speaker 6: So I feel like I feel like the fruit of
- 1:07:22Speaker 6: the looma logo, how it's changed and how they you know,
- 1:07:26Speaker 6: try to make it seem like it wasn't how it
- 1:07:28Speaker 6: was with Ben Brown. Can you guys give me three
- 1:07:31Speaker 6: skills that Garrett Bradberry possesses that Ben Brown doesn't, and
- 1:07:37Speaker 6: without mentioning leadership and experience, please thank you?
- 1:07:40Speaker 2: Hey, Hugh, you got a good point besides leadership and experience.
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: All right, that is one of them. You can't just
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: throw that out.
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: The one, the one I would give just to be
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: fair to Ben. To Garrett Bradberry, he's more athletic than
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: Ben Brown. Yeah, he's a better athlete. He's a first
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: round athlete, and he moves latterly and up to the
- 1:07:59Speaker 2: second level a lot faster than Ben Brown does. I
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: think that's the biggest concern that I would have about
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: Ben Brown at guard, because you do want those guys
- 1:08:07Speaker 2: to get up to the linebackers and stuff a lot
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: more than what you do with your center most of
- 1:08:12Speaker 2: the time. And Garrett Bradbury is in athletics center. That's
- 1:08:16Speaker 2: what got him drafted in the first round. Like, that's
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: why he's had success in this league. That's why he's
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: been a starter in the league for six years. So
- 1:08:26Speaker 2: he's a I would say, if you wanted like a
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: physical trait of what Bradberry is better at than Ben Brown,
- 1:08:33Speaker 2: it would be athleticism and range from the center position.
- 1:08:37Speaker 2: But Ben Brown's got size on him, He's got play strength,
- 1:08:42Speaker 2: I would say, on Garrett Bradbury, and I guess if
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: you want to use youth as like a positive right
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: like he's let's tread on the tires as well. But
- 1:08:53Speaker 2: if you wanted a physical attribute that Bradbury has over Brown,
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: I'd say athleticism. All right, Williams and Philly, what's up? William?
- 1:09:04Speaker 3: Hey?
- 1:09:04Speaker 7: Hey up?
- 1:09:04Speaker 2: And how you doing good? How are you all right?
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: Hey?
- 1:09:08Speaker 5: It's like hey, now, well one one question that's not
- 1:09:14Speaker 5: related to football. Another question is I'll just start with
- 1:09:17Speaker 5: the one that is first, Alic, if you talk about
- 1:09:21Speaker 5: what was the receiver you told me to look up
- 1:09:23Speaker 5: from Arizona's state, His name is Tyson.
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: Jordan Tyson, Arizona State.
- 1:09:28Speaker 5: Right, all right, look with the Patriots history right of
- 1:09:33Speaker 5: not be even too as far as get a receiver
- 1:09:37Speaker 5: or as far as drafting one or developing one or
- 1:09:40Speaker 5: anything like that. Only why I put only why I
- 1:09:42Speaker 5: told you Twain twenty seven though, is because I'm looking
- 1:09:45Speaker 5: at what's going on with the Patriot though you always
- 1:09:48Speaker 5: getting receivers that's thirty something years old, you know what
- 1:09:51Speaker 5: I mean, or or or you're drafting one that that
- 1:09:55Speaker 5: you you drafted the wrong one in the second, third round,
- 1:09:57Speaker 5: something in that magnitude whatever, you know, It just seems
- 1:10:01Speaker 5: like it just it seems to me like they're setting
- 1:10:03Speaker 5: things up for twenty twenty seven for the pictures.
- 1:10:05Speaker 3: To do that, you know what I mean.
- 1:10:06Speaker 5: Like my idea would be like, Okay, would you want
- 1:10:09Speaker 5: to take your the first round pick between twenty six
- 1:10:11Speaker 5: traded for I traded for twenty twenty seven that when
- 1:10:14Speaker 5: you have two first round picks and do whatever. I
- 1:10:17Speaker 5: don't know, I'm just saying that. I know that might
- 1:10:19Speaker 5: not be the great idea whatnot, but that's that's just
- 1:10:23Speaker 5: something I thought about. Though I don't know if y'all
- 1:10:26Speaker 5: would want to do that or anything like that. You know,
- 1:10:29Speaker 5: just they need a number one receiver bottom line period,
- 1:10:31Speaker 5: you know, I mean, a guy that can do it all,
- 1:10:33Speaker 5: that's a threat and everything, you know what I mean,
- 1:10:35Speaker 5: and they we haven't had that since Randy Moss.
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: You know. Yeah, I mean, I just if you're nobody's
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: trading out of the Jeremiah Smith or Ryan Williams picks.
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: They're just not going to trade out of that pick.
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: And if you're picking high enough to take one of
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: those guys, things have gone. They should not be in
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: that position. That would be more bad than good. As
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: good as those players are, they should be out of range.
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: So you know, I don't think you just win to
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: take a receiver until the perfect guy comes along. If
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: you're not in the right position, you're you're now in
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: serious trouble. So they can't just not take a receiver
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: this year because maybe we'll give up the entire franchise
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: to draft Jeremiah Smith in twenty twenty seven. Any number
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: of things can happen between now and then that could
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: get You can't have that long term of a plan
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: for one player in the draft.
- 1:11:20Speaker 5: Okay, And my question is basically, all right, so this
- 1:11:23Speaker 5: is not about football, all right, So you'll be on
- 1:11:25Speaker 5: ninety eight point point five a sports hub whatnot? Yeah,
- 1:11:29Speaker 5: could you tell me like the music that they be playing,
- 1:11:31Speaker 5: it's just instrumental like rock music. I think that's what
- 1:11:33Speaker 5: it is. Can you tell me where could I get different?
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: Where what the music they're using is bad music?
- 1:11:39Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 1:11:39Speaker 7: That's what?
- 1:11:40Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a great question.
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: I I we don't have like a playlist. Maybe we should,
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: that's a good question.
- 1:11:45Speaker 2: I'm sure you like have a library that you guys
- 1:11:47Speaker 2: pay for that has like instrumentals and like non copywritten music.
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: Well, are you talking about just in general, like one
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: specific song?
- 1:11:57Speaker 3: Well?
- 1:11:58Speaker 8: Was it's just something?
- 1:11:59Speaker 5: But it's just instrumental, That's what I saw it is.
- 1:12:01Speaker 5: Yet they don't play nothing but vocals anything mean by
- 1:12:03Speaker 5: saying it is just it is just instrumental, that's all
- 1:12:05Speaker 5: it is.
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: Well, some of that is songs that have a longer
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: instrumental intro and some of it I think it's just
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: going on YouTube and finding instrumentals. There's not one specific. Yeah,
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: I don't think there's like a big database.
- 1:12:18Speaker 2: I always found that thanks for the comedy, and I
- 1:12:20Speaker 2: always found that interesting about your station is that you
- 1:12:22Speaker 2: play copyright music and don't get in trouble for it.
- 1:12:26Speaker 2: Is that like an like because you're actually on the
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: rate like the physical.
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: There is I don't know you pay the answer to this,
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: I don't want to get anybody in trouble. I think
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: it has something to do with because the company that
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: owns the sports hub, which is easily so they run
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: ninety six nine and you know some other stations.
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: That makes sense because we can't play at music like
- 1:12:47Speaker 2: that here.
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: Right, So I think that they I think the company
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: that owns the sports Tub has the license and it
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: just it covers all of those stations.
- 1:12:55Speaker 2: Yeah, that makes sense. So I back to his football
- 1:12:57Speaker 2: question about the wide receivers. I want to We were
- 1:13:00Speaker 2: talking about this yesterday on PU. One of my goals
- 1:13:03Speaker 2: for this season for the Patriots is to make themselves
- 1:13:06Speaker 2: a desirable destination for star talent. In twenty twenty six,
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: I think.
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: I will say it's free agent wide receiver. Clear the
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: pre agent class is not great.
- 1:13:16Speaker 2: You can quantify that, though, however you want to quantify it.
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: But the next time. I don't know if it's going
- 1:13:22Speaker 2: to happen this time around because they're not there yet.
- 1:13:25Speaker 2: But let's just say the next offseason when the next
- 1:13:28Speaker 2: disgruntled wide receiver isn't going to get traded but acts
- 1:13:31Speaker 2: like he's going to get traded asked for a trade.
- 1:13:34Speaker 2: I want the Patriots to not get Brandon Aiyuke to
- 1:13:37Speaker 2: get right or Calvin ridleyed in free agency. I think
- 1:13:41Speaker 2: that's a big part and quantify that however, it looks
- 1:13:43Speaker 2: make the playoffs win, you double your win total. Maybe
- 1:13:47Speaker 2: it's just Drake May looks like a guy like if
- 1:13:50Speaker 2: Drake May has Justin Herbert is rookie season, I want
- 1:13:53Speaker 2: to say only one like four or five games, but
- 1:13:55Speaker 2: Herbert looked unreal, and so maybe it's just that whole thing.
- 1:14:00Speaker 2: But making yourself a desirable destination. For William to finally
- 1:14:04Speaker 2: get his number one receiver, I think is a really
- 1:14:07Speaker 2: big deal for them. They need to make the New
- 1:14:10Speaker 2: England and the Patriots a desirable team again.
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: So I'll just throw this out there. The pre agents
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: for next year, So these will be the guys that
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: are entering a contract year in twenty twenty six, So
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: essentially what McLaurin and met Kalf and all these guys
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: were this year. Tell me if you're interested. Drake London, Yes,
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: but he's gonna get extended. Darnell Mooney, No, they have enough.
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: Darnell Mooney's JSN.
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: Yeah, but he'll get extended.
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: Michael Pittman, Maybe Tyreek Hill.
- 1:14:40Speaker 2: Michael Pittman, didn't he sign an extension with the Colts. No,
- 1:14:43Speaker 2: he's on this. I think I thought he got a
- 1:14:45Speaker 2: new using over the cap. Maybe maybe it was a
- 1:14:47Speaker 2: short term, maybe it was a franchise tag. I mean
- 1:14:49Speaker 2: this is essentially a two year he signed. Okay, he
- 1:14:52Speaker 2: signed a three year deal. Yeah, so going into last season,
- 1:14:55Speaker 2: so that will be ye into last year that extension.
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, yeah. So the your guys you have trade
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: for these aren't free agency? Is the pre agent Michael Pittman?
- 1:15:04Speaker 2: I probably would, just because he's complimentary to what they have.
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: All right, Tyreek Hill, No Zay Flowers, yeah, obviously, but
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: no Jordan Addison.
- 1:15:15Speaker 2: Okay, we have some Patriots breaking news. Okay, Kendrick Bourne
- 1:15:19Speaker 2: has been released by the Patriots, according to Tom Pelisaro.
- 1:15:23Speaker 2: So Kendrick Bourn makes the team yesterday. And this is
- 1:15:27Speaker 2: when we always joke about the rosters. It's fluid and
- 1:15:30Speaker 2: it's in flux. Kendrick Bourn has been released by the Patriots.
- 1:15:34Speaker 2: This is from Pelisaro. And now everybody's.
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: Adam Schefter saying he requested his release.
- 1:15:39Speaker 2: So he requested his release. That's what Adam Schefter is saying. Yep,
- 1:15:43Speaker 2: requested his release. So Kendrick Bourne vested veteran so that
- 1:15:49Speaker 2: means that he does not have to go through waivers.
- 1:15:51Speaker 2: So now Kendrick Bourne, if released by the Patriots, which
- 1:15:54Speaker 2: he was according to these reports, is now free to
- 1:15:58Speaker 2: sign with any of the thirty one team in the league,
- 1:16:01Speaker 2: so he does not have to go through the waiver process.
- 1:16:04Speaker 2: This is not the breaking news I was expecting us
- 1:16:06Speaker 2: to get on the show. But I'm glad we had
- 1:16:08Speaker 2: got some breaking news on the show, Alex. Just your
- 1:16:10Speaker 2: instant reaction to this.
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: If I can just wax poetic about Kendrick Bourne for
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: a second, do it, because you know how I feel
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: about Kendrick Borne. Like I think Kendrick Bourne was a
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: fine I think Kendrick Bourne was a good player, and
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: he was on a thousand yard pace in twenty twenty
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: one before he got cold. He would have been the
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: patriots only thousand yard receivers sin settlement. If he doesn't
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: get sick that year, comes back the next year, and
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: that should have been like they should have been able
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: to build on that. Matt Patricia's offense was a mess.
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: He gets in the doghouse over some stuff he really
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: should not have been in the doghouse for that's a
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: lost year. The next year in twenty twenty three, okay,
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: ken Kendrick Bourne, and I think he signed an extension
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: before that year, before twenty twenty four, but comes back
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: in twenty twenty three. Okay, let's try this again. Let's
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: see what he can do. And he was not bad
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: off the rip his full season pace over the first
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: eight games eighty catches, eight hundred and sixty yards, eight touchdowns.
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: That would have been his full season pace. That's a
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: solid season. That would have been one of their better
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: wide receiver seasons in a while. Tears ACL in Miami
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: before Halloween season's over comes back last year, misses the
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: beginning of the season, he's coming off to torn ACL
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: and look, I know you guys get on me that
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: I won't quit Kendrick Bourne at this point and will admit,
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: thirty years old, it's coming off torn ACL chasing a
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: season that he had four years ago is just not realistic. Yep,
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: he was, And it's not so much reflection on this
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: coaching staff, because again, I think at this point it
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: is what it is. He's one of the bigger wasted offer,
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: not waste wasted potential or missed potential that I've covered,
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: and I think that's much more on the team than him.
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: He definitely wasn't perfect, but I think he was a
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: real fine in that twenty twenty one free agency class,
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: and they just were constantly missing each other, like they
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: never the window was never truly open and capitalized twenty
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: one season, and that sucks because he loved his mentality,
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: loved his mental makeup, loved his approach. I think he
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: he already was kind of a fan favorite, but a
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: guy that would have been really cool to see succeed here.
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: If we were to do like the short list of
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: guys I wish played with Brady after Brady left, he
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: might be at the top of that list. He's up there.
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: It's like him and Hunter Henry. But you know, we'll
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: see if he comes back on the practice squad. My
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: guess would be no. Since he requested his release, doesn't
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: seem like I wish him the best elsewhere. That sucks
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: because there was real potential there for him to make
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: a difference in between injuries and bad coaching. It just
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: never happened.
- 1:18:36Speaker 2: So I agree with everything he said. Kendrick Bourne also,
- 1:18:40Speaker 2: and I know this doesn't mean anything to anybody else
- 1:18:42Speaker 2: besides maybe the Beat, but just one of my favorite
- 1:18:46Speaker 2: people to talk to in the locker room over the
- 1:18:47Speaker 2: last couple of years. I really enjoyed his press conference
- 1:18:51Speaker 2: is getting to know him a little bit. Always a
- 1:18:54Speaker 2: smile on his face, always a nice dude. One thing.
- 1:18:56Speaker 2: I know again that nobody else cares about this, but
- 1:18:59Speaker 2: I just think it's saying he knew a lot of
- 1:19:02Speaker 2: us by name, and like cared to know a lot
- 1:19:04Speaker 2: of us by name. I thought that was really cool.
- 1:19:07Speaker 2: Just a really genuine good dude, like good spirited.
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:19:12Speaker 2: Always, Like I said, like you laid it out perfectly
- 1:19:15Speaker 2: in terms of his run here, it wasn't all sunshines
- 1:19:18Speaker 2: and rainbows for Kendrick Bourne in terms of what was
- 1:19:22Speaker 2: going on with the Patriots and what was going on
- 1:19:24Speaker 2: with him injuries twenty twenty two. The coaching staff didn't
- 1:19:28Speaker 2: like him for whatever reason that he gets hurt in
- 1:19:31Speaker 2: twenty three, when he was having a career start to
- 1:19:33Speaker 2: the year, in twenty three with Bill O'Brien tears his
- 1:19:36Speaker 2: ACL and halfway through twenty twenty three, so there was
- 1:19:39Speaker 2: all sorts of reasons for Kendrick Bourne to be MOPy,
- 1:19:42Speaker 2: to be disgruntled, to be disappointed, and he just never
- 1:19:45Speaker 2: was any of those things. So I give him a
- 1:19:47Speaker 2: lot of credit for that. He's a pros pro in
- 1:19:49Speaker 2: terms of all that kind of stuff. Now in terms
- 1:19:53Speaker 2: of the roster, we all got the roster yesterday and
- 1:19:56Speaker 2: saw eight wide receivers and were like, not surprised. This
- 1:19:59Speaker 2: is not just annable. There's too many receivers here.
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: So a little more I from Mandra Callahan here. The
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: Patriots are releasing wide receiver Kendrick Bourne upon request after
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: they failed to finalize a trade that would have sent
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: him to Minnesota. Per source, Born is healthy and it
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: was expected to practice he've made in New England, So
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: why did he make the initial roster. They wanted to
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: work the trade out right, They couldn't get the trade
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: done by four o'clock yesterday. They spent more time the
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: feel and trade happens this morning. That doors now closed.
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: He gets released.
- 1:20:28Speaker 2: Great point, great great connection there with Adam Feelin because
- 1:20:31Speaker 2: similar kind of receiver, right that was this morning, right, yeah, yeah,
- 1:20:33Speaker 2: and similar kind of receivers. I think they were going
- 1:20:36Speaker 2: to play similar roles in Minnesota if Minnesota had acquired them.
- 1:20:40Speaker 2: I'm not surprised that it's the Vikings that were interested,
- 1:20:42Speaker 2: not that Kendrick Born practiced in those joint practices, but
- 1:20:45Speaker 2: they obviously had a lot of back and forth behind
- 1:20:49Speaker 2: the scenes between Vrabel and Kevin O'Connell. I'm sure during
- 1:20:52Speaker 2: that week where they probably talked about each other's rosters
- 1:20:56Speaker 2: and the players that might become available. So I was
- 1:20:58Speaker 2: expecting that maybe there would be some roster change of
- 1:21:02Speaker 2: you know, exchanging going on between the Patriots and Vikings.
- 1:21:06Speaker 2: For that reason, you laid it out nicely in terms
- 1:21:09Speaker 2: of the ups and downs for Kendrick Bourne. I talked
- 1:21:13Speaker 2: about at the beginning of the show with the eight
- 1:21:16Speaker 2: wide receiver thing, It just I couldn't really envision a
- 1:21:21Speaker 2: game day role for Kendrick Born. Here there was the
- 1:21:24Speaker 2: five guys that we all have been mentioning at nauseum
- 1:21:26Speaker 2: that are really the top five in that room. Diggs, Douglas,
- 1:21:30Speaker 2: Booty Hollins, Kyle Williams. Those five guys are the guys
- 1:21:35Speaker 2: that I feel like are gonna have a chance to
- 1:21:37Speaker 2: play on game day on offense, Eft and Chisholm. I
- 1:21:40Speaker 2: think it might be a guy that's on the outside
- 1:21:42Speaker 2: looking into It's one thing to have an undrafted rookie
- 1:21:45Speaker 2: be a healthy scratch and his rookie season in his
- 1:21:47Speaker 2: first year in the NFL. Javon Baker potentially active for
- 1:21:50Speaker 2: special teams, and you mentioned this when we were talking
- 1:21:53Speaker 2: about the A wide receivers. Maybe we should just start
- 1:21:57Speaker 2: talking about Javon Baker in a similar way we talk
- 1:22:00Speaker 2: about Brennan Schooler. Like Brennan Schooler is technically on the
- 1:22:03Speaker 2: roster as a safety, but he's not playing safety. He's
- 1:22:06Speaker 2: playing special teams, and Javon Baker might be gravitating towards
- 1:22:09Speaker 2: that as well as a wide receiver that's playing special teams.
- 1:22:12Speaker 2: So the Kendrick Bourne run here is over. I think
- 1:22:16Speaker 2: it's over. There's no reason for him to ask for
- 1:22:18Speaker 2: his release if he was going to be on the
- 1:22:21Speaker 2: practice squad. So now that dovetails that, you know, turn
- 1:22:26Speaker 2: the page here. The Patriots now the fifty two guys
- 1:22:29Speaker 2: on the roster yeap, so they have an open roster
- 1:22:31Speaker 2: spot we should hopefully I was hoping that the news
- 1:22:35Speaker 2: that we were going to get while we were on
- 1:22:36Speaker 2: the air was the waiver claims. We should be hearing
- 1:22:39Speaker 2: about waiver claims here, not before long, but knowing that
- 1:22:42Speaker 2: they released Kendrick Bourne, I think it's pretty safe to
- 1:22:45Speaker 2: say that they at least put in a claim for
- 1:22:48Speaker 2: somebody that they think they're going to get to take
- 1:22:51Speaker 2: that roster spot, and that's why we're here. Are you
- 1:22:54Speaker 2: at all surprised with Kendrick Bourne that this didn't happen
- 1:22:56Speaker 2: yesterday or that he didn't go on io Like, it's
- 1:23:00Speaker 2: just kind of weird that twenty four hours later they
- 1:23:03Speaker 2: could have just done this yesterday. But I think maybe
- 1:23:05Speaker 2: you're right about the trade. Potentially they wanted to keep
- 1:23:08Speaker 2: the door of the trade over. Now, why couldn't they
- 1:23:09Speaker 2: get the deal done? What was the Feeling trade? It
- 1:23:11Speaker 2: was a sixth and a seventh. Uh, yeah, it wasn't much,
- 1:23:15Speaker 2: so I'll when you're talking.
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: I mean, Feeling had a good year last year, all
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: things considered for his age and all that. So I
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: what did they want for born? I'm guessing the Patriots
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: weren't getting a pick out right? It was probably a
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: pick soop.
- 1:23:29Speaker 2: It was a twenty twenty sixth seventh and twenty twenty
- 1:23:32Speaker 2: seventh fifth for Adam Feeling. I mean, there's a lot
- 1:23:38Speaker 2: of picks going back and forth, but.
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: If you're going to cut them anyway, I would have
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: just taken the one pick and done it. I wonder
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: if Minnesota wasn't going to do that. I wonder if
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: they were insisting on a pick swap and the Patriots
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: didn't want to, you know, net lose picks considering how
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: much we see Rabel wants to turn over the roster.
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: But I feel like that's something that that they should
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: have been able to get done.
- 1:23:59Speaker 2: So I'm gonna miss Kendrick Born. You miss having him around.
- 1:24:05Speaker 2: I already we already kind of waxed poetic about that.
- 1:24:08Speaker 2: That being said, I actually am cautiously optimist mystic about
- 1:24:12Speaker 2: their wide receiver room. And I was on with one
- 1:24:16Speaker 2: of your guys, McCarthy the other night, and I said
- 1:24:19Speaker 2: something along the lines of this is the best wide
- 1:24:22Speaker 2: receiver room that I can remember them having in quite
- 1:24:24Speaker 2: some time, and Matt correctly said, well, Evan, the bar
- 1:24:28Speaker 2: is not very high for that, right, the bar is
- 1:24:30Speaker 2: not very high. Which facts, the bar is not very high.
- 1:24:34Speaker 2: But I'm actually genuinely optimistic about the mix that they
- 1:24:38Speaker 2: have at wide receiver for the first time in a
- 1:24:40Speaker 2: while now. A lot of that hinges on Stefan Diggs
- 1:24:43Speaker 2: being what I think he's going to be, which is
- 1:24:45Speaker 2: Stefon Diggs. Maybe not prime Minnesota Buffalo Stefon Diggs, but
- 1:24:51Speaker 2: at least the guy at the end in Buffalo and
- 1:24:53Speaker 2: the guy last year in Houston before he tore his ACL.
- 1:24:55Speaker 2: I expect Stefon Diggs to play at that level for
- 1:24:58Speaker 2: the Patriots this year. And I also have been pleasantly
- 1:25:01Speaker 2: surprised by Matt Collins. I think mccollins is more of
- 1:25:04Speaker 2: a factor than I gave him credit for. I think
- 1:25:07Speaker 2: his catch radius and his size it lends itself well
- 1:25:11Speaker 2: to Drake May, who's not a pinpoint accurate quarterback all
- 1:25:14Speaker 2: the time, so he can and we saw him going
- 1:25:16Speaker 2: over the middle of the field in Minnesota and kind
- 1:25:18Speaker 2: of rescuing a high pass thereby Drake May off script
- 1:25:22Speaker 2: or out of structure playmaking. When May scrambles and he
- 1:25:25Speaker 2: starts running around, having a six foot four wide receiver
- 1:25:28Speaker 2: down the field to throw the ball to is a
- 1:25:30Speaker 2: nice thing to have for a quarterback. So we see
- 1:25:33Speaker 2: how comfortable Drake May is throwing to his tight ends,
- 1:25:36Speaker 2: you know, Hunter Henry Austin Hooper. I think it's similar
- 1:25:39Speaker 2: with mac collins because of his size and his catch radius.
- 1:25:42Speaker 2: So if Digs is Digs, mac Collins ends up being
- 1:25:46Speaker 2: like a nice fine maybe he has similar production to
- 1:25:49Speaker 2: what he had in Vegas a couple of years ago
- 1:25:50Speaker 2: with Josh McDaniels. And then you also have this emergence
- 1:25:55Speaker 2: of kind of both things happening at once, the re
- 1:26:01Speaker 2: emergence of the slot receiver and then Pop Douglas looking
- 1:26:05Speaker 2: like he can wear the suit of the slot receiver,
- 1:26:08Speaker 2: that thing happening coinciding at the same time. I look
- 1:26:12Speaker 2: at it and say, like, this is a decent room.
- 1:26:15Speaker 2: Is it the best room in the NFL? No, of
- 1:26:17Speaker 2: course not. But if they were the worst receiver room
- 1:26:20Speaker 2: in the league last year and maybe even the year before,
- 1:26:23Speaker 2: are they closer to middle of the pack this year?
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: Still think they're probably bottom third, but they're better. I
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: so much with Hinges on Diggs, so much.
- 1:26:32Speaker 2: With Kyle Williams, Like if Kyle Williams, if it's not Diggs,
- 1:26:36Speaker 2: and you know, the potential or the ceiling there comes
- 1:26:38Speaker 2: from Kyle Williams as well. But what I like about
- 1:26:41Speaker 2: the receiver room for me is like, along with just
- 1:26:45Speaker 2: thinking the talent level has improved there, I also just
- 1:26:48Speaker 2: like the fact that they have a nice mix of
- 1:26:51Speaker 2: skill sets. I think in the past they've had some redundancy,
- 1:26:55Speaker 2: they've been slow, they haven't had a field stretching element
- 1:26:58Speaker 2: to the offense. But you have a jitterbug slot in
- 1:27:02Speaker 2: Pop Douglas. You have a true technician and Stefan Diggs
- 1:27:06Speaker 2: to play the Z. You have a big body Dex
- 1:27:08Speaker 2: and Matt Collins, and you have a speed X and
- 1:27:11Speaker 2: Kyle Williams. And then I think Kishan Boody is kind
- 1:27:14Speaker 2: of in between Matt Collins and Kyle Williams. But I
- 1:27:19Speaker 2: like how they compliment each other. I like the mix
- 1:27:21Speaker 2: that they have there, and I just didn't feel like
- 1:27:24Speaker 2: there was enough space in that mix for Kendrick Bourne,
- 1:27:27Speaker 2: which is probably how we end up here. Yeah, So
- 1:27:31Speaker 2: anything else to add on kenner Bourne. I'll take a
- 1:27:32Speaker 2: lot these calls and.
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: That's pretty much it. All right, Let's get back to
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: the calls. Uh, Daniel is real quick report from San Francisco.
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: There's high interest from the forty nine ers bringing Kendrick Bourn.
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: I think that's where he ends up. I just I
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: don't know. I do don't want him to end up
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: in Kansas City. I think he'd succeed there, but I
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: don't want to have to watch him in Kansas City.
- 1:27:49Speaker 2: So San Francisco, you're saying, San Francisco, you brought up
- 1:27:52Speaker 2: San Francisco.
- 1:27:53Speaker 1: Here, No, so that did somebody brought up like Pittsburgh,
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: San Francisco, Kansas City as teams that need receivers.
- 1:27:58Speaker 2: Got it? So I could see sanfi Cisco reuniting with
- 1:28:01Speaker 2: Kyle Shanahan makes all those sense.
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: Well, you know what's gonna happen, then, right, he's gonna
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: be good. Well, if they win, I'm given Kyle Shanahan
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: no credit. Kendrick Bourne gets all the credit. That is
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: a full my guy versus you guy debate.
- 1:28:14Speaker 2: It'd be interesting to see, like, I don't know, I know,
- 1:28:17Speaker 2: we kind of get into this point and it's like,
- 1:28:19Speaker 2: could they have traded Kendrick Borne for like a conditional
- 1:28:22Speaker 2: sixth round pick that you obviously should take what you
- 1:28:26Speaker 2: can get for the player, But I wonder what was
- 1:28:29Speaker 2: really out there for him? Because if he just immediately
- 1:28:31Speaker 2: goes and turns around and signs with San Francisco, clearly
- 1:28:34Speaker 2: there was real motivation by the forty nine ers to
- 1:28:36Speaker 2: get Hendrick Bourne.
- 1:28:37Speaker 1: Or did the forty nine ers know when's the feeling
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: trade happened? All right, well they're gonna have to cut them.
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: Nobody else is gonna trade for him? Will wait it out.
- 1:28:43Speaker 2: They might have called their bluff.
- 1:28:45Speaker 1: Because I think if you're he'll have other suitors. Shanahan
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: probably knows he'll have a good chance to get him
- 1:28:51Speaker 1: back if he wants him back.
- 1:28:52Speaker 2: I feel like they probably could have gotten something for
- 1:28:54Speaker 2: Kendrick Borne. But if it again, if it was like
- 1:28:57Speaker 2: a conditional seventh round pick, I understand. Just give the
- 1:29:00Speaker 2: guy the freedom to decide where he wants to go
- 1:29:02Speaker 2: and just doing a solid by him. I know some
- 1:29:04Speaker 2: people that annoys people are doing teams do that, but
- 1:29:07Speaker 2: at the end of the day, if you're getting a
- 1:29:08Speaker 2: conditional seventh or a conditional six, like, what are we
- 1:29:11Speaker 2: really talking?
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: So I think the bigger thing is if it's a
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: pick swap and they were trying to net a pick here, yeah,
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: that would be.
- 1:29:16Speaker 2: That would have been probably better. All right, let's go
- 1:29:19Speaker 2: back to the phones. Daniel's in California. What's up, Daniel?
- 1:29:23Speaker 3: You guys don't good?
- 1:29:24Speaker 2: Pete.
- 1:29:26Speaker 9: So, yeah, I agree with you Evan about the wide
- 1:29:29Speaker 9: receiver room. I'm definitely optimistic about it. Like I don't
- 1:29:32Speaker 9: think it's one of the worst, which has been in
- 1:29:35Speaker 9: the past couple of seasons. I definitely think it's around
- 1:29:37Speaker 9: like the twenty twenty range, probably low twenties. But on
- 1:29:42Speaker 9: Pop Douglas though I did see that he's about the
- 1:29:45Speaker 9: on Edelman's podcast, or he already was not out yet.
- 1:29:49Speaker 9: I know that he's not like an every down player,
- 1:29:52Speaker 9: but you know, I have a feeling that he's due
- 1:29:54Speaker 9: for a breakout season. You know, if Drake, you know,
- 1:29:57Speaker 9: ends up being having a successful year, if Horse like
- 1:30:01Speaker 9: the people that I would think would get the credit
- 1:30:03Speaker 9: would be like Big Henry in the probably the running
- 1:30:05Speaker 9: back room. You know, But how do you feel that
- 1:30:09Speaker 9: you know what Pop season is, you know what his
- 1:30:13Speaker 9: potential was of being this season, and I can just
- 1:30:16Speaker 9: pick that off the air.
- 1:30:17Speaker 10: Thank you.
- 1:30:17Speaker 2: Yeah, Daniel, I actually have a story coming out probably
- 1:30:20Speaker 2: tomorrow on this exact topic and just the slot receiver
- 1:30:23Speaker 2: in Josh mcdaniels's offense in general, but also Pop Douglas,
- 1:30:27Speaker 2: Efton Chisholm and their role within that. And I actually
- 1:30:31Speaker 2: spoke to Edelman for it, so I have some good
- 1:30:35Speaker 2: stuff from Edelman on the role on playing in the slot,
- 1:30:39Speaker 2: also what he thinks of those guys. He's in the
- 1:30:42Speaker 2: media now so he pays attention to all this. Just
- 1:30:45Speaker 2: one little thing I'll share Edelman is really high on
- 1:30:49Speaker 2: both guys, but really high on Pop Douglas and said
- 1:30:52Speaker 2: he's he predicted somewhere between eighty to ninety catches this
- 1:30:55Speaker 2: year for Pop in this offense. And he just said
- 1:30:59Speaker 2: having Josh McDaniels is like McDaniels is, all he's gonna
- 1:31:02Speaker 2: do is hunt matchups in the inside with Pop and
- 1:31:04Speaker 2: get him on linebackers, and get him on safeties, and
- 1:31:07Speaker 2: get him in foot races that he can win off
- 1:31:10Speaker 2: the line of scrimmage. And he really was bullish about
- 1:31:14Speaker 2: the combination of McDaniels and Pop together and how good
- 1:31:18Speaker 2: that can be for Pop Douglas. And I'll just add
- 1:31:21Speaker 2: I've been really impressed with how well Pop Douglas has
- 1:31:23Speaker 2: handled some of the mental aspects of that position. I
- 1:31:26Speaker 2: wasn't one hundred percent certain that he was going to
- 1:31:28Speaker 2: handle some of the post snap processing. You basically have
- 1:31:32Speaker 2: to process the defense like you're a quarterback. You have
- 1:31:34Speaker 2: to read the coverage, you have to find the soft spots.
- 1:31:36Speaker 2: You have to know when it's quarterbacks right, you have
- 1:31:39Speaker 2: to know when it's man. I've been really pleasantly surprised
- 1:31:42Speaker 2: by how well Pop has picked all of that up.
- 1:31:45Speaker 2: And I know Drake May has talked about it lining
- 1:31:47Speaker 2: up in the right places, running routes with more detail
- 1:31:51Speaker 2: and more precise with his steps. And so I do
- 1:31:54Speaker 2: think that Pob Douglas is in I don't know if
- 1:31:57Speaker 2: we want to call it a breakout season, but I
- 1:32:00Speaker 2: think eighty catches is probably in play. You know, maybe
- 1:32:03Speaker 2: it's eighty for eight hundred. I don't know if it's
- 1:32:05Speaker 2: going to be a ton of yards per catch, if
- 1:32:08Speaker 2: it's going to be a very high number of yards
- 1:32:10Speaker 2: per catches, I think he'll probably be somewhere around ten
- 1:32:13Speaker 2: or eleven yards. But realistically, I do think eighty catches
- 1:32:16Speaker 2: it in play for Pop.
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: Yeah, So I'll just emphasize though, I don't think Pop
- 1:32:22Speaker 1: Douglass like he doesn't need to have a volume season
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: have a successful season. Yeah, right, it's big plays, it's touchdowns,
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: it's first downs, things like that. I don't think he
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: needs to catch a hundred passes to have a breakout season.
- 1:32:34Speaker 2: No, Yeah, that's fair, and maybe it is. You know,
- 1:32:37Speaker 2: we talked a little bit about in this piece, which
- 1:32:39Speaker 2: I think was you know, Edelman was really good about this.
- 1:32:42Speaker 2: Like we talked about the difference between the slot, which
- 1:32:46Speaker 2: is McDaniels and McDaniels offense is called the F receiver
- 1:32:50Speaker 2: and the Z which is like the flanker receiver, and
- 1:32:54Speaker 2: the differences between those two positions, and there is differences
- 1:32:57Speaker 2: in terms of where they play and how they've run
- 1:33:00Speaker 2: routes typically speaking, especially like the F is only in
- 1:33:04Speaker 2: a three receiver package, is only when there's the XDF
- 1:33:07Speaker 2: and the Z. So in order to be a base
- 1:33:10Speaker 2: receiver like a Z receiver, a DAD takes a lot
- 1:33:14Speaker 2: more in terms of blocking and different things like that,
- 1:33:16Speaker 2: playing more on the outside. So to your point about volume,
- 1:33:21Speaker 2: like Pop is a true slot, he's not gonna be
- 1:33:25Speaker 2: a typically a guy. The Patriots play a lot of
- 1:33:28Speaker 2: base offense with with two receivers on the field, I
- 1:33:30Speaker 2: don't think he's gonna be on the field a ton,
- 1:33:32Speaker 2: But the second that they go to three receiver eleven,
- 1:33:35Speaker 2: then he's gonna be on the field a lot. So
- 1:33:37Speaker 2: at the end of the day, that's probably a wash.
- 1:33:38Speaker 2: Like he's probably still going to be seventy seventy five
- 1:33:42Speaker 2: eighty percent of the snaps because they play so much
- 1:33:45Speaker 2: in eleven these days in today's NFL, But it's a
- 1:33:48Speaker 2: little bit in that respect, not in terms of their
- 1:33:51Speaker 2: skill sets. They're not comparable players in that respect, but
- 1:33:54Speaker 2: in terms of usage, it's a little bit more Ammondola
- 1:33:57Speaker 2: than it is Ediement. Yeah so yeah, so that that
- 1:34:00Speaker 2: I would say is a little bit different. All right,
- 1:34:02Speaker 2: let's go to Christian in LA. What's up Christian?
- 1:34:07Speaker 7: Hey, guys, you know, I don't get a chance to
- 1:34:10Speaker 7: call into your show so much, but I really loved
- 1:34:12Speaker 7: what you guys do. More of the exes and o's
- 1:34:14Speaker 7: and you really get into and break it down. So
- 1:34:15Speaker 7: I really respect the show and I really love it
- 1:34:18Speaker 7: on it still going.
- 1:34:19Speaker 10: Well.
- 1:34:20Speaker 7: Now, let me get on you because both of you
- 1:34:22Speaker 7: guys are doing the very thing that I really really
- 1:34:25Speaker 7: dislike about commentators and quarterbacks. If you cannot bring a
- 1:34:30Speaker 7: guy into your quarterback room because you're afraid it's gonna
- 1:34:33Speaker 7: somehow damage the confidence and the psyche of your stark quarterback,
- 1:34:38Speaker 7: he's not a starting quarterback. That's a child that needs
- 1:34:41Speaker 7: to develop more before you put him in lead of
- 1:34:43Speaker 7: your franchise. I get so mad when I hear, well,
- 1:34:45Speaker 7: you know, if you bring a man, people are gonna
- 1:34:47Speaker 7: start firing. For me, I was gonna break me of
- 1:34:49Speaker 7: my kids. That's ridiculous to me. You bring the best
- 1:34:51Speaker 7: talent into your room that you can possibly get, and
- 1:34:54Speaker 7: if someone outplays you, I don't care. If you got
- 1:34:56Speaker 7: a hundred million dollars contract you got over, you got lucky.
- 1:34:59Speaker 7: The guys that plays best belongs on the field. That's
- 1:35:02Speaker 7: That's one I'm gonna ask you guys for that. Did
- 1:35:07Speaker 7: I see that they cut that that swing guard that
- 1:35:11Speaker 7: that everyone was kind of getting high on because he
- 1:35:13Speaker 7: got injured? Is that something that they usually put a
- 1:35:16Speaker 7: guy on injured, reserved and see maybe you know he's talented,
- 1:35:19Speaker 7: Let's wait and see if he can get well, or
- 1:35:21Speaker 7: well he's so injured that they just said, you know,
- 1:35:23Speaker 7: let's release him and get rid of him. And then my, my,
- 1:35:25Speaker 7: my third thing is with us trying to attract players
- 1:35:30Speaker 7: to the Patriots. Winning does help, But in today's landscape
- 1:35:35Speaker 7: where players were trying to develop simultaneously their post post
- 1:35:42Speaker 7: football careers and brands and that kind of thing, do
- 1:35:45Speaker 7: you think that vrabel will will have the kind of
- 1:35:49Speaker 7: attitude to allow some of the stuff that needs to
- 1:35:51Speaker 7: go on for players to sort of develop that that,
- 1:35:54Speaker 7: you know, that brand name and style to do something afterwards.
- 1:35:57Speaker 7: Thank you, guys, I'll take you off the air, and again,
- 1:35:59Speaker 7: I love the show.
- 1:36:00Speaker 2: Thanks Christian. I appreciate the call so to just to
- 1:36:02Speaker 2: the quarterback thing, like, that's not us, that is that's
- 1:36:04Speaker 2: putting that out there. We're just reading their actions, like
- 1:36:07Speaker 2: if they didn't care about the dynamic in the locker
- 1:36:10Speaker 2: room and all these different types of things, and Joe
- 1:36:12Speaker 2: Milton would still be here. So this is not this
- 1:36:16Speaker 2: is just a thing, like I don't think it's a
- 1:36:18Speaker 2: media thing. We're just reacting to what these teams are
- 1:36:21Speaker 2: doing and whether Christian, you know, I understand your point,
- 1:36:25Speaker 2: but this is a legit thing that teams do. When
- 1:36:29Speaker 2: you have a young quarterback like Drake May who has
- 1:36:32Speaker 2: all the talent in the world but isn't quite proven
- 1:36:35Speaker 2: yet and isn't quite established yet, teams are weary about
- 1:36:38Speaker 2: bringing in competition and having that be uneasy in the
- 1:36:41Speaker 2: quarterback room. I think that that's a part of it. Obviously,
- 1:36:45Speaker 2: talent and all that stuff is probably a bigger deal.
- 1:36:48Speaker 2: But we saw this with Mac Jones and Bailey Zappy,
- 1:36:50Speaker 2: and I think we saw this a little bit with
- 1:36:52Speaker 2: Joe Milton and Drake May. And I think that's why
- 1:36:54Speaker 2: Joe Milton is no longer here. Yeah, so I don't
- 1:36:57Speaker 2: think we're that's a media driven thing. Two, I don't
- 1:37:00Speaker 2: know who's talking about that guard. There's a million guards.
- 1:37:03Speaker 1: Laydon Robinson, maybe Laden only god they put on I
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: r oh, no, he said, did they cut?
- 1:37:07Speaker 2: Yeah? Maybe maybe Leyden Robinson, I'm not sure.
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: And then I don't think there are any linemen. People
- 1:37:12Speaker 1: were high on them they cut?
- 1:37:13Speaker 2: No, no, not not super high on And then uh,
- 1:37:16Speaker 2: what was his last one? There? I had something to
- 1:37:19Speaker 2: respond to that one too?
- 1:37:21Speaker 1: What was the last one?
- 1:37:21Speaker 2: I don't remember? Sorry, Christian, here you come at us
- 1:37:24Speaker 2: with three different things, and you know there's there's too
- 1:37:27Speaker 2: much there. All right, let's take this one. Jeff is
- 1:37:30Speaker 2: in Maine. What's up? Jeff?
- 1:37:34Speaker 3: Hey?
- 1:37:35Speaker 2: Good?
- 1:37:37Speaker 3: Uh? So I have two things, neither of which are exes.
- 1:37:41Speaker 3: Those related one ft Chisholm's listen. I don't know how
- 1:37:47Speaker 3: no one has said this yet, so we'll do it
- 1:37:49Speaker 3: on this show. I'm not sure anyone is gonna get
- 1:37:52Speaker 3: a better nickname for him than E C. Three.
- 1:37:56Speaker 2: Not bad.
- 1:37:57Speaker 3: I feel I feel good about that too. So last
- 1:38:00Speaker 3: year my fantasy team was the Manhattan Project. Yes, this year,
- 1:38:06Speaker 3: I mean I feel like just with the last couple
- 1:38:08Speaker 3: of shows. Does it not have to be in Island? Yeah?
- 1:38:12Speaker 1: Yeah, probably, there you go, there you go.
- 1:38:15Speaker 2: I love it.
- 1:38:15Speaker 1: The only person show and talk fantasy football.
- 1:38:18Speaker 2: By the way, we have some emails about your hate
- 1:38:20Speaker 2: for fantasy football.
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: Well, so I gotta get you on the Punter League too.
- 1:38:25Speaker 2: That has Jeff f chism Island sounds right to me.
- 1:38:29Speaker 3: That sounds great, all right, And again I will be
- 1:38:33Speaker 3: the only fantasy football call that you will take all year.
- 1:38:36Speaker 3: You'll get a couple updates and I will talk X's
- 1:38:38Speaker 3: nose from now on.
- 1:38:39Speaker 2: I love it. I appreciate it. You're the only one
- 1:38:43Speaker 2: that we allowed to talk fantasy one, only one. All right,
- 1:38:47Speaker 2: Patty's in Agua. What's up, Patty? How you doing.
- 1:38:53Speaker 6: Doing?
- 1:38:53Speaker 3: All right?
- 1:38:53Speaker 8: So last week I had something for Evan. This week
- 1:38:57Speaker 8: got something for you, Alex. I heard I heard you
- 1:39:00Speaker 8: say two words on TB I think it was last week,
- 1:39:04Speaker 8: And when he said it, my intento went up those
- 1:39:06Speaker 8: two words. Nick Harbor, I can't wait, dude, I can't wait.
- 1:39:11Speaker 11: For this weekend.
- 1:39:11Speaker 8: Can't wait for the start of the college game.
- 1:39:13Speaker 11: Yeah, and I'm gonna keep I'm gonna get keep a
- 1:39:16Speaker 11: close eye on him. Because that dude is a bona
- 1:39:18Speaker 11: fide freak, and I'm hoping that he is a big
- 1:39:20Speaker 11: season because if he does, that's the guy I want
- 1:39:22Speaker 11: next year in the first round. So all I got,
- 1:39:26Speaker 11: let's freaking go. I know you're gonna be watching this weekend, Alex,
- 1:39:29Speaker 11: I'll be watching you.
- 1:39:31Speaker 2: Thanks for the call, Patty, how do you explain to
- 1:39:32Speaker 2: everybody who the heck.
- 1:39:34Speaker 1: Nick Harbor and Patty put him away? He's a player
- 1:39:36Speaker 1: to watch. I am not saying I want the Patriots
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: to draft him, not yet. I'm not saying I don't
- 1:39:40Speaker 1: want them to draft him because I got to see
- 1:39:42Speaker 1: how the season goes. Nick Harbor, Evan, We've been doing
- 1:39:45Speaker 1: this for eight years. Nick Harbor, I dare to say
- 1:39:49Speaker 1: will be the best raw athlete we've ever covered coming
- 1:39:53Speaker 1: out of the draft. I've reserved that for Jordan Davis.
- 1:39:56Speaker 1: The best raw, the best pure just athleticism. Okay, in
- 1:40:00Speaker 1: terms of athleticism, this guy was a five star crew
- 1:40:03Speaker 1: coming out of high school as a defensive end. Six five,
- 1:40:06Speaker 1: two thirty five goes to and he's a track star
- 1:40:09Speaker 1: to All American track star goes South Carolina. Wants to
- 1:40:12Speaker 1: play receiver. So six five two thirty five All American
- 1:40:16Speaker 1: in the one hundred yard dash two hundred yard dash,
- 1:40:18Speaker 1: Like the reports are, he can run a forty in
- 1:40:21Speaker 1: the high four threes. Again it's six five, two thirty five.
- 1:40:25Speaker 1: But because he was a defensive end play a little
- 1:40:28Speaker 1: tight end in high school, it's all incredibly raw. So
- 1:40:33Speaker 1: the big thing this year with Nick Harb it's the
- 1:40:35Speaker 1: first year's draft eligibly he's a true junior. He didn't
- 1:40:38Speaker 1: run track this year in the springs, the first time
- 1:40:40Speaker 1: he's ever done that. He dedicated himself fully to football,
- 1:40:43Speaker 1: to picking up the nuances of the position. All the
- 1:40:46Speaker 1: reports out of the South Carolina spring practices were there's
- 1:40:49Speaker 1: results there like that actually paid off. He's got a
- 1:40:52Speaker 1: Heisman caliber quarterback in Lenora Sellars, like we'll see right again,
- 1:40:58Speaker 1: player to watch if he actually put to work in
- 1:41:01Speaker 1: and there's some skill there. The athleticism, the size, the speed,
- 1:41:05Speaker 1: all of that speaks for itself. If not, well, big guy,
- 1:41:09Speaker 1: it's the fast and big guy runs fast and what
- 1:41:12Speaker 1: and he may end up staying another year in college
- 1:41:14Speaker 1: and trying to develop. Like again, he's a true junior.
- 1:41:17Speaker 1: He was the first ever true freshman to be at
- 1:41:19Speaker 1: the top of the Freaks List and the Athletic. He
- 1:41:22Speaker 1: was the first player to be number one on the
- 1:41:23Speaker 1: Freaks lits back to back years. In the Athletic he
- 1:41:26Speaker 1: was top five again this year, I think because they
- 1:41:28Speaker 1: just felt it was unfair to keep putting him at
- 1:41:30Speaker 1: the top. There is no more exciting prospect in college
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: football than Nick Harbor. Whether or not he ultimately that
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: pans out, we will see. This is a huge year
- 1:41:40Speaker 1: for him.
- 1:41:40Speaker 2: There's a proply guy that he told me he needs
- 1:41:42Speaker 2: to learn how to play football. Kind of yeah, okay,
- 1:41:44Speaker 2: well that's a pretty big deal. But so South Carolina's
- 1:41:49Speaker 2: got a good coaching staff. The reports are that this
- 1:41:52Speaker 2: spring just focusing on football and not running. I said
- 1:41:54Speaker 2: that tongue in cheek because he's never done like the
- 1:41:57Speaker 2: full calendar year of football. Okay, because he dedicates him
- 1:42:00Speaker 2: off the track. He did that this year. Let's see
- 1:42:02Speaker 2: what the results are. I'm fascinated by it. Maybe there's
- 1:42:04Speaker 2: nothing here. There's a real chance there's nothing here, and
- 1:42:06Speaker 2: then I will drop it. But if there is something,
- 1:42:10Speaker 2: I mean, you're talking like a DK Metcalf Josh Gordon
- 1:42:13Speaker 2: kind of receiver. So when you said the best raw
- 1:42:16Speaker 2: athlete that, yeah, we ever covered in a draft. DK
- 1:42:20Speaker 2: was the first one that comes to mind to me,
- 1:42:22Speaker 2: so that I know DK didn't have the agility testing,
- 1:42:24Speaker 2: but we're talking about a absolute alien. So six foot
- 1:42:28Speaker 2: four dude that runs a fourth.
- 1:42:30Speaker 1: He is among the elite athletes. He's at the top
- 1:42:32Speaker 1: of the list, like he's another level. So I'm excited
- 1:42:36Speaker 1: to see, if you think. But he's got a lot
- 1:42:38Speaker 1: of growing and needs to show this year.
- 1:42:39Speaker 2: All right, so we do have some the waiver thing
- 1:42:44Speaker 2: is going really slow this year for whatever reason.
- 1:42:46Speaker 1: Do a practice squad side, we have.
- 1:42:48Speaker 2: Some practice squad things. Looks like maybe Terrell Jennings from
- 1:42:51Speaker 2: Mark Daniels coming back on the practice squad. The couple
- 1:42:55Speaker 2: of the Titans reporters down there said the Titans claim
- 1:42:58Speaker 2: four guys on.
- 1:43:00Speaker 1: It doesn't help. I saw one I think was Juju Brentz,
- 1:43:03Speaker 1: who was a big draft guy of mine. For you,
- 1:43:05Speaker 1: I just want real quick. I want to say my
- 1:43:08Speaker 1: favorite thing about cutdown Day every year is getting tagged
- 1:43:12Speaker 1: in tweets about players that I draft crush on, like
- 1:43:15Speaker 1: three years ago, We're getting cut Honestly, like, I truly
- 1:43:18Speaker 1: appreciate that. I don't know if you get the same thing.
- 1:43:21Speaker 1: I truly appreciate. It actually means a lot to me
- 1:43:23Speaker 1: that you guys remember this stuff, because sometimes I maybe
- 1:43:25Speaker 1: don't even remember and got to go back and look
- 1:43:27Speaker 1: up what I wrote about the guy. So it does
- 1:43:29Speaker 1: mean to lots of me every year, like I got tagged, Juju,
- 1:43:31Speaker 1: Brents got cut. There are a couple other guys I
- 1:43:34Speaker 1: know when Bryceford Wheaton went on IR like I got tagged, Like,
- 1:43:38Speaker 1: I always appreciate seeing those guys.
- 1:43:40Speaker 2: So I'm a little disappointed. Usually by now, Tom Pelisaro
- 1:43:45Speaker 2: or Albert bre or somebody has the wire. The wire
- 1:43:49Speaker 2: data is post, the entire wire of who was claimed.
- 1:43:52Speaker 2: But right now what we're getting is we're getting slow
- 1:43:55Speaker 2: trickle outs of some of the insiders are going team
- 1:43:58Speaker 2: by team of who was So it sounds like the
- 1:44:01Speaker 2: Titans were the most active team. They claimed four guys
- 1:44:05Speaker 2: on waivers, Samuel Womack defensive back, a lot of defensive backs.
- 1:44:11Speaker 2: Let's see. Oh they came from Alabama, Jalen amwar Davis.
- 1:44:16Speaker 2: Uh yeah, they claimed him as well.
- 1:44:19Speaker 1: So they claimed two corners.
- 1:44:20Speaker 2: They claimed a handful of corners.
- 1:44:22Speaker 1: It sounds like that Patriots might be on a corner.
- 1:44:25Speaker 2: So there's there's a couple of things. But let's take
- 1:44:29Speaker 2: a few more of these calls. We have ten minutes
- 1:44:31Speaker 2: left and hopefully we can see definitively if the Patriots
- 1:44:35Speaker 2: have claimed anybody. Uh, let's go to Mark in Connecticut.
- 1:44:38Speaker 2: What's up, Mark?
- 1:44:40Speaker 10: What's going on? My brothers?
- 1:44:41Speaker 3: How are we good?
- 1:44:42Speaker 10: How are you too bad? Evan? Just a quick couple
- 1:44:47Speaker 10: of things to Gooby Myers, any real word on him
- 1:44:53Speaker 10: if he's actually gonna be available to get. And then
- 1:44:56Speaker 10: the other thing is that tight end. I still feel
- 1:44:59Speaker 10: like we need another really good tight end. And there's
- 1:45:02Speaker 10: two that are I believe on the waiver Wile, Josh
- 1:45:05Speaker 10: Wile and Greg Dulich, who actually just picked the crap
- 1:45:10Speaker 10: out of us that was on the New York Giants
- 1:45:12Speaker 10: over the last preseason game. I wanted to get your guys'
- 1:45:15Speaker 10: takes on those guys.
- 1:45:17Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, thanks for the call. Mark. So a lot
- 1:45:20Speaker 2: of conversations about those two tight ends. Deulich we all
- 1:45:23Speaker 2: just saw with the Giants in the preseason game. And
- 1:45:25Speaker 2: then Wile was drafted by Vrabel I believe in Tennessee. Yeah,
- 1:45:30Speaker 2: and then was released by the Titans. So maybe some
- 1:45:32Speaker 2: interest there on the tight ends on Jacoby Myers. I'm
- 1:45:36Speaker 2: glad somebody called in and asked the question. It does
- 1:45:38Speaker 2: seem like Dad's died down maybe a little bit about
- 1:45:41Speaker 2: Jacob Myers's trademarket, if there ever was one. My whole
- 1:45:45Speaker 2: take on Jacoby Myers, and I said this yesterday on
- 1:45:47Speaker 2: PU Alex, is that if you just want to say,
- 1:45:50Speaker 2: just get the best receivers and to get the best
- 1:45:52Speaker 2: talent on this roster full stop, I don't care about
- 1:45:55Speaker 2: redundancies and positions and z's and x's and all, then fine.
- 1:45:59Speaker 2: I'm not gonna sit here and argue with you because
- 1:46:02Speaker 2: I also like Jacoby Myers. But but that being said,
- 1:46:07Speaker 2: two of your biggest engines of your offense right now
- 1:46:09Speaker 2: are Stefan Diggs and Pop Douglas. And I think there's
- 1:46:12Speaker 2: a ton of positional overlap with Jacoby Myers and those
- 1:46:15Speaker 2: two guys. And I don't necessarily look at Jacobi Myers
- 1:46:19Speaker 2: and say that he's really what you need at the
- 1:46:22Speaker 2: receiver position. If this was the Jacoby Myers of outside
- 1:46:26Speaker 2: the numbers X receivers that can get down the field,
- 1:46:29Speaker 2: then I would be more all in on that.
- 1:46:31Speaker 1: I mean, Stefan Diggs.
- 1:46:33Speaker 2: Well, Stefan Diggs, but like Sefon Diggs canna play the
- 1:46:36Speaker 2: Z and I don't think he's gonna get that many
- 1:46:38Speaker 2: outside the numbers.
- 1:46:39Speaker 1: Oh no, I thought you meant like if it was
- 1:46:40Speaker 1: that version of Diggs.
- 1:46:42Speaker 2: Yeah, right, sure, Yeah, uh that as well, you could
- 1:46:46Speaker 2: play Pop and Digs and Myers together. I just think
- 1:46:50Speaker 2: that you really lack a true outside the numbers speed
- 1:46:54Speaker 2: and ball winner out there with that group. I think
- 1:46:57Speaker 2: it's a slower group compared to what they really want
- 1:47:01Speaker 2: to be. So long winded answer, but I guess they
- 1:47:04Speaker 2: kind of signed Stefon Diggs to play the Jacobe Myers
- 1:47:07Speaker 2: role within the offense. So if they then go ahead
- 1:47:09Speaker 2: and trade for Jacoby Myers, I'm not really sure how
- 1:47:12Speaker 2: the two of those guys fit together. Someone's gonna end
- 1:47:15Speaker 2: up playing on the outside too much, is my fear
- 1:47:18Speaker 2: with that, And that person is probably not going to
- 1:47:20Speaker 2: be used to the best of his abilities and therefore
- 1:47:23Speaker 2: not going to have the production that they're being paid
- 1:47:26Speaker 2: to have that they were acquired to have. And so
- 1:47:29Speaker 2: I think right now they might have too much redundancy
- 1:47:32Speaker 2: in the wide receiver room for Jacoby Myers.
- 1:47:35Speaker 1: Yeah. Look, I'm with you, like, you can't turn down
- 1:47:37Speaker 1: good players. But if you start taking targets away from Digs,
- 1:47:41Speaker 1: what does that do for him? I don't think this
- 1:47:43Speaker 1: is about Pop Douglas. Now is there a way you
- 1:47:45Speaker 1: can get all three of them on the field. Maybe
- 1:47:47Speaker 1: you're playing Digs out of position or at his old
- 1:47:49Speaker 1: position at the X, so there's complications that come with that.
- 1:47:53Speaker 1: In an ideal world, I think you'd wait a couple
- 1:47:55Speaker 1: of weeks, see how things pan out, and maybe if
- 1:47:57Speaker 1: Digs doesn't look right off the knee or guys are hurt,
- 1:48:00Speaker 1: and you re engage the conversations, now he may get
- 1:48:02Speaker 1: dealt or signed extension before then. But I just he's
- 1:48:06Speaker 1: not that Terry McLaurin level of player, right that you're
- 1:48:08Speaker 1: looking for. And I think at a certain point you
- 1:48:10Speaker 1: just got to go in and see what you have.
- 1:48:11Speaker 1: He definitely gives you a higher floor than Diggs does.
- 1:48:13Speaker 1: But at this point they need to take a shot
- 1:48:15Speaker 1: at wide receiver. I'll take the ceiling with Diggs, yeah,
- 1:48:19Speaker 1: because they know what Digs looks.
- 1:48:20Speaker 2: Like right right, And it's a good point just in
- 1:48:22Speaker 2: terms like, yeah, the talent is the talent. And if
- 1:48:25Speaker 2: you again, like I said, if you just are in
- 1:48:28Speaker 2: the school of thought that I just want to take
- 1:48:30Speaker 2: the talent and fine, But I do think that in
- 1:48:32Speaker 2: this case it's a little bit more complicated than that.
- 1:48:36Speaker 2: And I definitely feel like you want to see this
- 1:48:40Speaker 2: through with Stefon Diggs. And in order to see it
- 1:48:43Speaker 2: through truly with Stefon Diggs, I think you have to
- 1:48:45Speaker 2: play him at the Z and he has to be
- 1:48:47Speaker 2: a high volume guy because if he's not getting his
- 1:48:49Speaker 2: targets and he's not running the route tree that he
- 1:48:51Speaker 2: needs to be running, then this can go south on
- 1:48:54Speaker 2: them with Stefon Diggs. And I worry about that with
- 1:48:57Speaker 2: Admyer's involvement there. If it was Terry McLaurin that level
- 1:49:01Speaker 2: of player, you figure it out. If it was a
- 1:49:03Speaker 2: true outside the numbers guy, then you take that guy
- 1:49:06Speaker 2: and it's complimentary and it works out. It's just not
- 1:49:09Speaker 2: the case here with Myers. All Right, Ken is in Florida?
- 1:49:11Speaker 2: What's up? Ken? Ken? Ken? Going? Once? All right? Ken,
- 1:49:20Speaker 2: you can call back in. We have five more minutes
- 1:49:23Speaker 2: on the show. So if you call back in, can
- 1:49:25Speaker 2: can I can I humor you with something real quick?
- 1:49:30Speaker 2: So Curtis and Saint Louis has a bone to pick
- 1:49:32Speaker 2: with you, and most of the time it's bones to
- 1:49:33Speaker 2: pick with me. So I'm glad that this is happening.
- 1:49:36Speaker 2: Uh So he is very disappointed that you wag your
- 1:49:40Speaker 2: finger at fantasy football fans and the fantasy football community.
- 1:49:46Speaker 2: So he's gonna say this is what he has to say.
- 1:49:48Speaker 2: Uh you, I'm trying to like parse this down because
- 1:49:55Speaker 2: it's a lot of words. I generally agree with you your
- 1:49:57Speaker 2: points and takes. You've been my guy. But when you
- 1:49:59Speaker 2: come out out and say fantasy players are not real fans,
- 1:50:03Speaker 2: that is a huge slap in the face. Do you
- 1:50:05Speaker 2: think that fantasy people are not real fancy all right
- 1:50:08Speaker 2: over there?
- 1:50:08Speaker 1: Yeah, there's like some bug jumping around on me. I mean,
- 1:50:11Speaker 1: I think there are people who play fantasy football who
- 1:50:14Speaker 1: are real football fans. I'm not saying all fantasy football
- 1:50:17Speaker 1: players aren't. I think there are some people who play
- 1:50:19Speaker 1: fantasy football who think that alone qualifies them as and
- 1:50:23Speaker 1: not a football fan in the sense that I enjoy
- 1:50:25Speaker 1: watching the NFL, I mean a fan of the sport itself.
- 1:50:28Speaker 1: I think there are some people that play fantasy football
- 1:50:31Speaker 1: that they know the quarterbacks, the running backs, the wide receivers,
- 1:50:34Speaker 1: and the tight ends and that's it. And they you know,
- 1:50:38Speaker 1: they know the numbers and they don't maybe know what's
- 1:50:41Speaker 1: behind those numbers, how they get there and things like that.
- 1:50:44Speaker 1: That's the group I'm more talking to. There. There are obviously,
- 1:50:47Speaker 1: like real football fans who play fantasy football.
- 1:50:50Speaker 2: So I think what in general is maybe this is
- 1:50:52Speaker 2: kind of what you're getting at. I think what's what
- 1:50:55Speaker 2: bothers me a little bit about the fantasy community is
- 1:50:58Speaker 2: that they basically take the trenches out of their thinking.
- 1:51:02Speaker 1: And the defense entirely.
- 1:51:03Speaker 2: Well yeah, but like specifically, I would say the I
- 1:51:09Speaker 2: feel like if you only pay attention to fantasy and
- 1:51:11Speaker 2: that's how you base all your takes off of just
- 1:51:14Speaker 2: fantasy football. I'm not saying this is everybody. I'm just
- 1:51:16Speaker 2: saying people that do that, then to you, acquiring wide
- 1:51:20Speaker 2: receivers and running backs and tight ends is the only
- 1:51:22Speaker 2: thing that matters.
- 1:51:23Speaker 1: And these are the people I'm talking to.
- 1:51:25Speaker 2: Whereas when you talk about what we talk about on
- 1:51:29Speaker 2: this show, like the true x's and o's and the
- 1:51:31Speaker 2: true scheme in minutia of football, the most important thing
- 1:51:36Speaker 2: in football, and I will continue to pound the table
- 1:51:38Speaker 2: for this besides quarterback is offensive and defensive line play,
- 1:51:43Speaker 2: the game is won and lost there. Now, the quarterback
- 1:51:46Speaker 2: is the biggest factor. Everybody knows that. But besides the quarterback,
- 1:51:50Speaker 2: your offensive and defensive lines is the biggest factor. Now,
- 1:51:54Speaker 2: you could have a quarterback, as I can already hear Paul,
- 1:51:56Speaker 2: who's probably not listening, but if he was listening, he
- 1:51:59Speaker 2: would say, well, the Chiefs had a bad offensive line
- 1:52:01Speaker 2: last year and they still made it to the super Bowl. Yes,
- 1:52:04Speaker 2: if you have Patrick Mahomes quarterback and your team, then
- 1:52:07Speaker 2: you can make up for it. But more times than not,
- 1:52:09Speaker 2: you do not have Patrick Mahomes and so therefore your
- 1:52:13Speaker 2: offensive and defensive line really is the engine of your
- 1:52:16Speaker 2: football team. That is the foundation of your football team.
- 1:52:19Speaker 2: I think that sets the floor of what you can
- 1:52:21Speaker 2: be as a team besides the quarterback. If you don't
- 1:52:24Speaker 2: have that figured out and buttoned up, then it's hard,
- 1:52:27Speaker 2: it's hard times to be really truly competitive in this league.
- 1:52:31Speaker 2: So I do feel like sometimes the fantasy community does
- 1:52:35Speaker 2: sort of turn that into you know, the only thing
- 1:52:37Speaker 2: that matters is wide receivers, right, it's wide receiver ones.
- 1:52:40Speaker 2: It's you know, running backs. Overvaluing running backs and not
- 1:52:44Speaker 2: paying enough attention to the trenches there. All right, we're
- 1:52:49Speaker 2: gonna have to wrap up the show. And okay, so
- 1:52:52Speaker 2: we do have one claim. We do have one claim
- 1:52:55Speaker 2: by the Patriots. We have two minutes to break down
- 1:52:57Speaker 2: one claim. The Patriots did a little bit of breaking
- 1:53:01Speaker 2: news here at the end. According to Field Yates, the
- 1:53:03Speaker 2: Patriots have a claimed quarterback, Tommy DeVito, off of waivers.
- 1:53:07Speaker 2: So Tommy DeVito, the pies on himself, the chicken cutletman,
- 1:53:11Speaker 2: Tommy DeVito coming to the New England Patriots. You have
- 1:53:14Speaker 2: one minute to react to this, Alex and I have
- 1:53:16Speaker 2: one minute. What do you got?
- 1:53:18Speaker 1: I got to hope they opened it up between him
- 1:53:20Speaker 1: and Dobbs. Let's see. Yeah, it'll be behind closed doors.
- 1:53:23Speaker 1: We won't see.
- 1:53:24Speaker 2: But it's a great point this is.
- 1:53:26Speaker 1: Do you think do you think he could pass Dobbs
- 1:53:27Speaker 1: QB two?
- 1:53:28Speaker 2: I do. I do think he could push Dobs for
- 1:53:30Speaker 2: QB two. I think he's more consistent, I think he's
- 1:53:33Speaker 2: more accurate quarterback compared to Josh Dobbs. His being in
- 1:53:38Speaker 2: Brian Dables offense, which is very very similar to the
- 1:53:41Speaker 2: offense that Josh McDaniels runs, I think is a big deal.
- 1:53:45Speaker 2: Reason why they've made this claim having a guy that
- 1:53:49Speaker 2: basically ninety five percent of the offense that he was
- 1:53:52Speaker 2: running in the Giants is the same as the offense
- 1:53:54Speaker 2: that they're running here, So there shouldn't be too much
- 1:53:57Speaker 2: in terms of picking up on the scheme and all
- 1:53:58Speaker 2: that kind of stuff. Tommy DeVito claimed by the Patriots
- 1:54:02Speaker 2: off of waivers. He will be on the fifty three
- 1:54:04Speaker 2: man roster. This is not a practice squad situation. He
- 1:54:07Speaker 2: will be on the fifty three man rosters. So to
- 1:54:09Speaker 2: your point about challenging backup quarterback, I think that says
- 1:54:12Speaker 2: it all right there. If they just signed Ben Lurris,
- 1:54:16Speaker 2: if they just signed Taylor al Gerzma to the practice squad,
- 1:54:19Speaker 2: then it's just a practice arm, right. This seems like
- 1:54:21Speaker 2: more than a practice arm. They put in a waiver
- 1:54:23Speaker 2: claim for Tommy DeVito, and they awarded Tommy DeVito. So
- 1:54:27Speaker 2: we'll have more on Tommy DeVito and the Patriots waiver claims.
- 1:54:31Speaker 2: I haven't heard of any other ones just yet, but
- 1:54:35Speaker 2: we'll break those down for you tomorrow on Patriots Unfiltered.
- 1:54:38Speaker 2: We got to go on this show, but thanks so
- 1:54:40Speaker 2: much for watching, Thanks so much for listening.
- 1:54:42Speaker 1: Another claim, Charles Woods defensive back week.
- 1:54:45Speaker 2: We'll get to those next week and we'll be on
- 1:54:48Speaker 2: Ten to Do next week on Wednesdays. We'll keep you
- 1:54:50Speaker 2: updated on that on social media, but until then, signing off,
