- 0:08Speaker 1: What's happened? Everybody. Welcome into another edition of the check
- 0:12O Daily. Andrew Decheco here bringing you all of the
- 0:16news and notes from day eight. That's right, Day eight.
- 0:19I had to think about that of Eagles training camp,
- 0:23and it was a eventful practice, always really fast paced
- 0:27and well orchestrated, but it ran for about an hour
- 0:30and forty minutes and it was deemed yellow. The Eagles
- 0:33were in shorts and shells today and believe it or not,
- 0:37the preseasons right around the corner. Thursday, the Eagles open
- 0:41preseason play with the Cincinnati Bengals. So they'll practice Sunday, Monday,
- 0:47and Tuesday this week and it's going to be a
- 0:50very eventful and fast paced start too this week. And
- 0:54I'm one of those guys. You guys have followed me
- 0:57long enough now that you know that I enjoy preseason play.
- 1:01I really find it interesting in terms of which players
- 1:05are going to make the most of their opportunity. Who's
- 1:09going to take what they've done on the practice field
- 1:11and translate it over looking at certain position battles, the
- 1:16depth places in terms of safety, corner, defensive line, who's
- 1:22going to rise to the occasion on special teams. These
- 1:25are all things that I look for. A lot of
- 1:26these players that are going to be playing in these games,
- 1:29you have to remember, are those that I've scouted or
- 1:31evaluated during the pre draft process over the past few years,
- 1:36and have seen and evaluated in training camp. So I'm
- 1:39curious to see how some of these guys are going
- 1:42to fare in their first extended opportunity in an NFL game. Okay,
- 1:48So Sunday status report. Linebacker Zach Bond didn't practice, wide
- 1:55receiver A J. Brown didn't practice. Safety Lewis Scene didn't practice,
- 2:00or did running back Montreal Johnson, offensive lineman Trevor Keegan,
- 2:03wide receiver Terrace Marshall, cornerback Mac McWilliams at fullback Ben
- 2:08Van Sumeran for Brown seen Johnson Junior and Keegan their
- 2:13new additions. Brown actually stood and watched Sunday's practice from
- 2:17the sideline. Good news there, but he actually sat out
- 2:21the second half of Friday's practice, whereas McWilliams and Ben
- 2:26Van sumer And were sidelined for their second consecutive practice.
- 2:29Limited for the Eagles were linebacker Jahad Campbell, long snapper
- 2:33Charlie Hewlett, tight ond EJ. Jenkins, safety Drew mccooba, wide
- 2:36receiver DeVante Smith, and edge Nolan Smith. Mccoopa was withheld
- 2:41from team drills, and Smith Junior didn't partake in eleven
- 2:44on eleven's, but he did log some reps during seven
- 2:47on sevens. All right, so let's get right to it. Defensively,
- 2:52the Eagles opened in nickel today. If you remember back
- 2:55to my notes leading up to this point, the Eagles
- 2:57have opened in base Cooper dejen was playing safety with
- 3:02Red Blanketship, and then when he moved in to nickel,
- 3:05that's where you saw Sidney Brown come on. But today
- 3:08it was a little bit different. Their unit included Jalen
- 3:12Carter and Jordan Davis on the defensive line, jay Loox
- 3:15Hunt and Azizo Jilari, who aligned on the left side
- 3:18were your overhanged players Jeremiah Trotter Junior and Jahad Campbell
- 3:22at linebacker, and the safety tanem of Reed Blankenship and
- 3:25Sidney Brown. As I mentioned, the cornerback trio was comprised
- 3:28of Quinya Mitchell, Cooper Dejeen and Adri Jackson. Now, if
- 3:32you're keeping score, that now makes five practices in which
- 3:35Jackson has aligned opposite Mitchell at the start. Keey Ringo
- 3:41also mixed in today as well. Again, this is something
- 3:45that's going to persist likely through the preseason, so be
- 3:49be on high alert for that. And I don't necessarily
- 3:52know if one players ahead in this race. If so,
- 3:55it's very narrow. But you have five practices where Jackson's
- 4:00started with the ones. Three for Ringo. Wide receiver DeVante
- 4:06Smith actually returned to practice today in a limited capacity
- 4:09as I alluded to, but he missed someone with a
- 4:15back injury. But he picks up right where he leaves
- 4:17off and early in the session Jay when Hurts connected
- 4:22with Smith, who found the saut spot in coverage between
- 4:25Trotter Junior and Brown, it was a really nice crosser
- 4:28off to the left for a nice pickup. He is
- 4:30such a smooth criminal, that's what I refer to him
- 4:33as when getting in and out of breaks and creating separation.
- 4:37Smith also reeled in a nifty sideline grab during seven
- 4:41on seven's with Nolan Smith in coverage. This was fun
- 4:45because during an eleven on eleven period, Jayalen Hurts went
- 4:48for the juggular at one point, heaving a pass in
- 4:50the direction of a streaking Jehan Dawson. Now Johan Dotson
- 4:54had about three or four steps on a Dori Jackson,
- 4:58but he wasn't in position or he was in position
- 5:03to bring in the catch, but Jaywen Hurts put too
- 5:06much on it and it rendered the past incomplete felt
- 5:09just in front of him, and at one point Johan Dotson,
- 5:13who did have a nice day to day, he shook
- 5:15cornerback Eli Rix at the line with a sort of
- 5:18a crossover move and took off towards the middle of
- 5:22the field, had a lot of distance there, but Jaywhen
- 5:24Hurts overshot him. But I'll also say this because this
- 5:28was one of the better connections of the day, because
- 5:31Jaywen Hurts did eventually convert a perfectly executed back shoulder
- 5:35throw along the left side line to tight end Dallas Goddard,
- 5:38who really showcased impressive body control on that. And the
- 5:42coverage wasn't bad. Rookie linebackers Smile Mandan Jr. Was right there,
- 5:47so I thought that the coverage was pretty tight. But
- 5:50the sequence epitomized the rapport between Hurtz and Goddard that
- 5:54has been evident throughout the summer and without Brown and Marshall,
- 5:59Smith was actually on a limited basis. Mind you, Goddard
- 6:02was definitely peppered with targets more so than normal. Perhaps
- 6:08one of the more fun defensive plays which definitely sort
- 6:13of supplies some energy. There was edge rusher josh Usha,
- 6:17who hits a power rush off the right side, showcasing
- 6:21those active, violent hands. And he's really known more as
- 6:24a speed rusher, but he showed good power here and
- 6:28he strikes veteran left tackle Kendall Lamb and bowls him
- 6:33over in pursuit of Tanner McKee and McKee is flushed
- 6:37and eventually he doesn't find anybody and he has to
- 6:41throw the pass away. Look, and I've said this on
- 6:44different podcasts, the reality of the situation is is while
- 6:47Oujilari opened practice as the starter with Jay Walks Hunt,
- 6:53Osha has made more of his opportunities and every time
- 6:57he's on the field, more often than not hold something
- 7:00that'll catch your eye. Whereas o Jelari, aside from maybe
- 7:04the quote unquote sack of Jay when hurts on Friday,
- 7:07hasn't necessarily strung together too many impressive reps to the
- 7:11point where you feel comfortable anointing him as the third
- 7:14edge rusher in this rotation. Jahat Campbell had an active morning,
- 7:20while at times proving a bit vulnerable in coverage. I
- 7:23think that's fair to say, but he's also continuing to
- 7:26grow within the system. He did smother wide receiver Ania
- 7:29Smith on a short Hurtz toss over the middle to
- 7:32deny completion. He charged downhill and completely blanketed him on
- 7:37the play and Annius was unable to come up with it.
- 7:40And he this time working with the second team. In
- 7:43this instance, he swarmed EJ Jenkins on a short completion
- 7:46over the middle. EJ caught the pass, but I think
- 7:50it's important to note that Campbell was right there and
- 7:52he charged in to make the play. E J Jenkins
- 7:56returned to practice today after missing two with the hamstring
- 7:58injury and caught a couple of passes earlier in the session.
- 8:02And if I were to gauge the kickoff coverage alignment,
- 8:04and yes, I am one of those guys who I'm
- 8:07jotting down all the numbers of the players who are
- 8:09working on the first team. It looks like will Shipley,
- 8:13Sydney Brown, Key Lee Ringo, and Avery Williams are going
- 8:16to be core contributors. Now the first unit today also
- 8:21featured some interesting names of players who were vying for
- 8:24roster spots, such as linebacker Patrick Johnson, tight end Kylin
- 8:28Grantson in safety Andre Sam more on Sam. A little
- 8:32bit later, during a situational period, the Eagles attempted a
- 8:36hail mary pass with quarterback Dorian Thompson Robinson. The pass
- 8:41actually reached the end zone, but it was batted down
- 8:45and it was a heads up play by Reed blanket
- 8:47hip good, good presence of mind to make sure that
- 8:50you're not trying to come away with the interception. He
- 8:52swatted it down and then they moved on to the
- 8:55next period. It was really just a one time hail
- 8:58mary heave and that's the way that it went. And
- 9:01while we're on the subject of Thompson Robinson, the third
- 9:03year quarterback, piloted an offense during his during the situational
- 9:08period and the waning moments of practice, faced with the
- 9:11fourth down scenario, Thompson Robinson attempted to thread to pass
- 9:16in over the middle that was picked off by linebacker
- 9:19Dallas Gant and that play ended practice and the defensive
- 9:24his defensive teammates were fired up and came over to
- 9:28agreet him. As for the offensive line, we know who
- 9:32the starters are on the first team, but the second
- 9:35team offensive line from left to right left tackle Kendall Lamb,
- 9:38left guard Brett Toath, center Drew Kendall, right guard, Darren Kenard,
- 9:42right tackle Matt Pryor. Matt Pryor and fourth year pro
- 9:46Darren Kennard continued to flip flop at right guard and
- 9:48right tackle, but in my estimation, it seemed like Canard
- 9:51acounted for more reps at right guard and prior at
- 9:55right tackle. This is a player we don't talk about
- 9:58a lot, so this may act be the first or
- 10:01second time you're hearing his name, but maybe jot this
- 10:04one down. Undrafted wide receiver Darius Cooper he saw a
- 10:08lot more snaps than usual today because the Eagles had
- 10:11a shortage at wide receiver with no Aj Brown and
- 10:14no Terrorist Marshall, and he had some nice moments. During
- 10:16a seven on seven period, he was able to shake
- 10:19Dallas Ganton coverage and create some separation to rill in
- 10:23a Tanner McKee crosser, and he also pulled in another
- 10:26McKee throw, slipping past cornerback Eli Rix down the right
- 10:30sideline during a situational period and McKee drops a beautiful
- 10:35pass right in the bucket, and I think that may
- 10:38have been the best throw of the day all things considered.
- 10:41That rival is the one that Hurts had on the
- 10:44back shoulder to god her. But I thought that Tanner
- 10:46McKee had a really nice practice today by the way,
- 10:49just accurate, poised and is able to make all the throws.
- 10:55So for a number two quarterback, the Eagles are in
- 10:57a very good position with Tanner McKee there. He has
- 11:00had a series of really strong practices and you can
- 11:03see that his ability uplifts the second team offense because
- 11:07you have a capable quarterback who can make all the
- 11:09throws and you're able to see, you're able to get
- 11:12a better assessment of what that second unit looks like
- 11:15when you have a capable quarterback navigating it. But the
- 11:20day wasn't completely without a blemish because Cooper did fail
- 11:25to corral another McKee pass the ball went through his hands.
- 11:30But he did also have a long kickoff return during
- 11:32a special team's drew as well. So a series of
- 11:34good plays one bad. I know earlier in last week
- 11:38there was a time where I think it might have
- 11:40been Tristan McCollum knocked the ball out of his hands.
- 11:43He's got to have that. But I think for a
- 11:46younger player like that to step up and make some
- 11:48plays when you have those opportunities as something notable, I
- 11:51would expect him to get considerably a lot of reps.
- 11:56During the preseason game. One of the more entertaining matchups
- 12:01has been between wide receiver Elijah Cooks and Rix. While
- 12:05Cooks has turned some heads this summer Sunday absolutely belonged
- 12:09to Rix. During an eleven on eleven period, McKee attempted
- 12:12to connect with Cooks on a corner out to the left,
- 12:14but Rix broke on the ball, defended the pass, and
- 12:18Rix did climb the ladder and close quarters in the
- 12:20end zone during I think it may have been a
- 12:22red zone period and prevented a McKee jumpball to Cooks
- 12:26in the back of the end zone. And then on
- 12:28the ensuing play, McKee went back to the well once
- 12:30more to Cooks and Rix again rejected the past, this
- 12:34time it was a lower one than he dove for
- 12:36to break it up. Rix, earlier in the practice also
- 12:40closed in over the top to deny a completion to
- 12:44tight end Nick Muse as well. Eli Rix has quietly
- 12:47had a nice training camp. He's playing with more confidence.
- 12:51I have a story coming out on Eli Rix on
- 12:53Inside the Birds dot Com. It'll be out on Monday.
- 12:56But carrying himself with more confidence in bravado and you
- 12:59see that he's playing faster on the field as evidenced
- 13:03by these pass breakups, and he's just seeing the game
- 13:05a lot differently. It appears to me, at least that
- 13:08the game has slowed down for him. Another good day.
- 13:12Another player who had a good day, I should say,
- 13:14is safety Tristan McCollum, who collected a pair of pass
- 13:17breakups during the session. The first was during a situational
- 13:21period where McCollum extended to break up a McKey pass
- 13:24to Granson along the far sideline. That's tight end Kylon Granson,
- 13:28and then later Thompson Robinson tried to fit one into Muse,
- 13:33but McCollum was there for the deflection. Probably should have
- 13:36picked that one off, but he still got the PBu.
- 13:38That was at least two on the day that he had.
- 13:42Andre sam I mentioned him in terms of the kick coverage.
- 13:46He had an impressive breakup at the goal line during
- 13:50a situational period where he converged to prevent the touchdown.
- 13:54I think Samile Smile Manden may have been there as well.
- 13:58But sam is a player who often to me at
- 14:00least appears to be in the right position. Keep an
- 14:04eye on him this preseason as well. He's someone who
- 14:06I believe is going to get a lot of playing time.
- 14:08And then I want to round things out by mentioning
- 14:10a player who I've talked a lot about on this podcast,
- 14:14or at least I've mentioned him on this podcast and
- 14:17I wrote about him as an under the radar player
- 14:19to keep an eye on. Don't look now, but second
- 14:22year defensive tackle Gabe Hall, one of my pre camp
- 14:25under the radar players to watch, is beginning to stack
- 14:28some productive sessions. I've noticed him in the backfield on
- 14:31a handful of occasions, including once today, at least once today,
- 14:35and Hall also showcase some impressive power Friday during the
- 14:40offensive line and defensive line one on one drills. The
- 14:43Eagles typically prefer to go heavy in the trenches, so
- 14:46that could potentially qualify Hall as one the monitor of
- 14:49the preseason. Well, that's going to do it for this
- 14:52addition of the check odaily the Eagles are back on
- 14:55the practice field tomorrow at ten am and I will
- 14:58have all the news and notes for you with another
- 15:00edition of the Czech Odaly, and I will catch you
- 15:02on the next one.
