- 0:00Zoom out, then zoom back in. There's a story behind that.
- 0:05This is your daily message from Chad #12120 to upgrade your
- 0:09mental game today by telling yourself a better story.
- 0:12Because the most important story you hear is the story you tell
- 0:15yourself. This message is dedicated to
- 0:17Taylor and Justin Whitaker on their anniversary.
- 0:21Here's the upgrade. Zooming out can show you you'll
- 0:24survive, but upgrade to thinking zooms back in to do something
- 0:26about it. Here's the story.
- 0:31Damian Gerk tells a story visiting the giant Sequoia near
- 0:34Yosemite when he stopped at a cross section of an old tree
- 0:38displayed in the visitor center. Hundreds of rings representing
- 0:42the hundreds of years the tree stood.
- 0:44Most of the rings were light and even, but one band was dark.
- 0:48Several rings in a row pinched and scarred.
- 0:50The plaque on the display described the year there was a
- 0:53forest fire. The fire was just a thin, dark
- 0:56band and a long, healthy life. But I want to be careful here.
- 1:01If you're in the fire right now, maybe you buried a child.
- 1:05Maybe you got the diagnosis. Maybe your finances are
- 1:09troubling. The last thing you need is
- 1:11someone telling you your pain is a blip.
- 1:14That isn't wisdom. That's a comfortable person
- 1:16talking to a burning one. But looking at the tree again,
- 1:21the dark ring is still there hundreds of years later.
- 1:25It never faded. The fire was real and the market
- 1:28left is permanent. The cross section doesn't prove
- 1:31the fire was small, it proves the tree lived through it.
- 1:36There's an old story about a queen who is sad most of the
- 1:39time. She sought the counsel of a wise
- 1:41man who gave her a silver ring and told her to wear it.
- 1:45A week later, nothing had changed.
- 1:48She said to him, Your ring has been of no help.
- 1:52He said the help was not wearing the ring but reading what I
- 1:56engraved inside. And she took the ring off and
- 1:59read This too shall pass. Notice what he didn't do.
- 2:04He didn't tell her the sadness was small.
- 2:07He gave her something to wear as a reminder.
- 2:09That's what zooming out is for. Not to shrink the pain, but to
- 2:13be reminded that you'll still be standing when it's done.
- 2:18And then you zoom back in. Because the Sequoia didn't
- 2:21survive the fire by studying its own cross section, it survived
- 2:25by growing the next ring and then another.
- 2:29However, perspective without action is just a nicer view of
- 2:33the same mess. So zoom out long enough to
- 2:36believe you'll make it. Then come back down to today and
- 2:39do the one thing in front of you.
- 2:42Get out of bed, take the walk, make the call, do the next right
- 2:47thing. That's the ring you're growing
- 2:50today. The better story to tell
- 2:53yourself is I zoom out to know I'll survive and I zoom in to
- 2:58grow the next ring. Tell me a story of a season you
- 3:01survived to from chadsmith@gmail.com and send a
- 3:05text to someone who's in the fire and tell them you can
- 3:09survive this. You can get a free copy of my
