- 0:03Speaker 1: Welcome to pick up and deliver the podcast where I
- 0:05Speaker 1: pick up my audio recorder as I step off the
- 0:08Speaker 1: train and deliver an episode to you while I walk home.
- 0:10Speaker 1: I'm Brendan Riley. Well, greetings, Listen, it's a lovely day
- 0:22Speaker 1: here in suburban Chicago. The sun is out, the temperature
- 0:26Speaker 1: is warm, and I'm walking home from the train. I
- 0:29Speaker 1: thought I would take a few minutes today to talk
- 0:30Speaker 1: to you about my upcoming trades. I am participating in
- 0:36Speaker 1: the Chicago No Ship the Chicagoland No Ship math trade,
- 0:42Speaker 1: and so what I thought I would do is talk
- 0:43Speaker 1: about the games that I have put into the mass
- 0:45Speaker 1: trade and why they're there. I'm gonna get through as
- 0:48Speaker 1: many as I can, flipping along pretty quickly, and so
- 0:52Speaker 1: I'll give you like one thing I liked about the
- 0:55Speaker 1: game and why I'm getting rid of it, and we'll
- 0:58Speaker 1: move on from there. Okay, if you don't know what
- 1:01Speaker 1: a math trade is, I will take a moment to
- 1:03Speaker 1: explain that a math trade is an elaborate way for
- 1:08Speaker 1: groups of people to maximize the efficiency of board game trading.
- 1:13Speaker 1: So the premise, the starting point is that the idea
- 1:16Speaker 1: that you and I say, person a in person B
- 1:20Speaker 1: might not have anything that the other one wants, but
- 1:24Speaker 1: if you introduce person C in person D into the mix,
- 1:27Speaker 1: the odds increase that one person has something person A
- 1:30Speaker 1: wants and that person A has something that someone else wants.
- 1:35Speaker 1: So the way that math trades work is that you
- 1:37Speaker 1: make this A group of people get together and make
- 1:40Speaker 1: this giant list of games that they have that they're
- 1:43Speaker 1: willing to trade or that they like to trade for,
- 1:46Speaker 1: and then you get a period in which you're submitting trades.
- 1:50Speaker 1: It's a two week period which ends soon I think Friday,
- 1:54Speaker 1: and then there's a one week period where people can
- 1:56Speaker 1: tally up their wants. The way that works is you
- 2:00Speaker 1: go through for each game that you have in the trade,
- 2:04Speaker 1: and you mark every game that you would be willing
- 2:07Speaker 1: to take in exchange for that game in the trade,
- 2:11Speaker 1: and the computer figures out these elaborate rings of trades
- 2:17Speaker 1: in which you give your games away to some people
- 2:21Speaker 1: and you get different games in return, and it tells
- 2:24Speaker 1: you what game you're getting for what game, but you
- 2:27Speaker 1: aren't getting them from the same person you're giving them to.
- 2:30Speaker 1: So after the math trade is executed, you get a
- 2:33Speaker 1: list of the things that you're giving away and a
- 2:37Speaker 1: list of things that you're getting. It's an interesting idea
- 2:41Speaker 1: and it works pretty well. I've done it before. It
- 2:44Speaker 1: has a lot of benefits. You can get rid of
- 2:46Speaker 1: games you don't want anymore, you can try out new
- 2:48Speaker 1: games in exchange.
- 2:50Speaker 2: I love it.
- 2:51Speaker 1: So that is the Chicago Board Game Trading Group, No
- 2:57Speaker 1: Ship Math Trade. So that we'll talk about today is
- 3:01Speaker 1: the games that I am putting in the math trade
- 3:04Speaker 1: and why they're there. I'm gonna say one thing I
- 3:07Speaker 1: like about each game and then move on. So I
- 3:10Speaker 1: start with dream Home. I like this as a very
- 3:13Speaker 1: cute game. It's a set collection element drafting. It's just
- 3:18Speaker 1: way too light for my taste. Rattle Battle, Grab the Loute.
- 3:22Speaker 1: It's a neat idea, but it's a real time game
- 3:25Speaker 1: or you're throwing dice into a box. But it's way
- 3:27Speaker 1: too fiddly. The rules are too complicated for what it is.
- 3:31Speaker 1: But the pieces are nice, really good chunky cardboard, and
- 3:34Speaker 1: the balloon tokens are well. Paradox. This is kind of
- 3:39Speaker 1: like a board game inspired by Bejeweled. I guess it's
- 3:42Speaker 1: a match three board game, and then you're collecting stuff
- 3:46Speaker 1: to visit different planets. I think it's a really neat idea,
- 3:50Speaker 1: and we had a lot of fun playing it, but
- 3:53Speaker 1: it's just one of those ones that we aren't playing
- 3:55Speaker 1: it enough, and we have other games, Like when we're
- 3:57Speaker 1: in the mood for that level of game, we have
- 3:59Speaker 1: other games we want to play. It also suffers from
- 4:02Speaker 1: the problem of my wife doesn't really like space sci
- 4:06Speaker 1: fi games. So Role Camera the filmmaking board game. This
- 4:09Speaker 1: is a cooperative game in which you're making movies. I
- 4:12Speaker 1: thought it was really neat. Nobody else in my family
- 4:15Speaker 1: liked it, so a way it goes. The ideas phase
- 4:19Speaker 1: is a really cool idea, a really cool notion gimmick
- 4:23Speaker 1: where in between when the sort of the problems are
- 4:26Speaker 1: revealed and when you start the game, there's a phase
- 4:30Speaker 1: where you can call everybody together to try to generate
- 4:33Speaker 1: ideas to solve filmmaking problems, and those ideas are a
- 4:36Speaker 1: pretty neat There's a pretty neat little mechanism. There's a
- 4:39Speaker 1: little bit of spatial puzzle to it, a little bit
- 4:42Speaker 1: of a hand management, a little bit of disaster management,
- 4:45Speaker 1: sort of in pandemic style. It's a fun game. Role
- 4:48Speaker 1: Camera Bob Ross art of Chill Again. This is a
- 4:51Speaker 1: game that's really too light for us to play all
- 4:53Speaker 1: that often, and it's super mean, So not a game
- 4:56Speaker 1: we're interested in. Keeping Disney Villainous the worst take at all.
- 5:00Speaker 1: This is the original Disney villain miss game. I talked
- 5:02Speaker 1: about it when we played it. I thought it was fine,
- 5:06Speaker 1: but ultimately it's really mean and we're not big Disney heads,
- 5:11Speaker 1: so not really up our alley. Ready to go. Shadows Amsterdam.
- 5:15Speaker 1: This is the first of several combos that I've put
- 5:19Speaker 1: on here. Shadows Amsterdam is a team based deduction game
- 5:24Speaker 1: in which you are giving each other clues trying to
- 5:27Speaker 1: move around. But I've also thrown in several other party games, QuickLink,
- 5:31Speaker 1: Charity Party, and that's a question. These are all sort
- 5:34Speaker 1: of light, goofy party games, good for a selection of people,
- 5:38Speaker 1: and I figure if I give them all the way together,
- 5:41Speaker 1: maybe I can get somebody to take them at Land
- 5:43Speaker 1: Dice is a dice placement game, pretty simple, easy to play.
- 5:50Speaker 1: We've got what I'm calling the Mystery game Extravaganza. These
- 5:53Speaker 1: are several games where you're trying to solve a mystery
- 5:57Speaker 1: when you play it. We've got Echos the Microchip, We've
- 6:00Speaker 1: got Undo Cherry Blossom Festival. We've got Sherlock Don's Legacy,
- 6:05Speaker 1: Sherlock thirteen, Hostages, and Sherlock Propagation. These are all one
- 6:09Speaker 1: deck mystery games that we got when we're in Iceland.
- 6:12Speaker 1: It's pretty neat. They have now made new versions of
- 6:15Speaker 1: them here in the US, called the Sherlock Files, but
- 6:18Speaker 1: these are the original ones. It's an interesting system. The
- 6:22Speaker 1: idea is that you draw cards and you keep you
- 6:26Speaker 1: examined some and you discard some, and there's a limit
- 6:29Speaker 1: to how many you can examine before you fail or something.
- 6:34Speaker 1: I don't remember exactly, but it was a pretty interesting
- 6:37Speaker 1: bit because you could share the information with others, but
- 6:40Speaker 1: you had to remember it. You can only keep so
- 6:42Speaker 1: many in the evidence. Harah and Zeus is a really
- 6:45Speaker 1: good two player Laine Battler maybe done with cards. It's
- 6:49Speaker 1: a classic time Pirates is a pretty dumb set collection
- 6:54Speaker 1: game from Donald X Vacorino. If I am able to
- 6:58Speaker 1: get rid of this for anything, I will happily take it.
- 7:01Speaker 1: I've got a family card game, Combo Storted with Rainbow Nights,
- 7:05Speaker 1: which is a kind of real time family card game.
- 7:09Speaker 1: It's an interesting little game where you are making a
- 7:13Speaker 1: path as quickly as you can with these sort of
- 7:15Speaker 1: translucent cards. I've also thrown in Rhino Hero, Adorable Panda,
- 7:19Speaker 1: Ring Loot, and Zeus on the Loose. These are all
- 7:23Speaker 1: great kids games, easy to play, fun, good for teaching
- 7:27Speaker 1: different things. Agatha Christie Death on the Cards is a
- 7:32Speaker 1: mystery focused card game. I like this one. There's a
- 7:35Speaker 1: little bit of a little bit of social deduction, not much,
- 7:39Speaker 1: just a little a frizzon and the theme is fun.
- 7:43Speaker 1: But again, just I have too many games, so this
- 7:47Speaker 1: went on the pile for not getting played enough. Trash
- 7:50Speaker 1: Pandas is an interesting set collection game. This is meant
- 7:52Speaker 1: to be a small box card game thing, and I
- 7:55Speaker 1: actually call it the small blox card game Bonanza. So
- 7:57Speaker 1: I've also added Boss Monster Zsame Smile, Master of Rules, Crononauts,
- 8:02Speaker 1: Pod X, Badass Zombie Killers, Tessin, and Blood and Fortune.
- 8:07Speaker 1: So this whole sort of pile of small box card
- 8:10Speaker 1: games which I thought maybe somebody would be interested in
- 8:14Speaker 1: checking out. It's a couple gems in there. Bonfire is
- 8:17Speaker 1: a Stephenfeld game. This is one of the ones where
- 8:20Speaker 1: I do like it and I kind of don't want
- 8:22Speaker 1: to get rid of it, but it's also going to
- 8:24Speaker 1: be the ones that will get me a game I'm
- 8:26Speaker 1: really excited about getting, probably and one of the only
- 8:29Speaker 1: ones that's going to be sort of it's gonna be
- 8:31Speaker 1: one of the more attractive games I have, So I'm
- 8:33Speaker 1: gonna be very picky with what I'll take for Bonfire.
- 8:36Speaker 1: Then I've got a collection of games to tell stories
- 8:38Speaker 1: Once upon a Time, the storytelling card game. I have
- 8:41Speaker 1: Chooser and Adventure, House of Danger and Fast Forward Flee
- 8:45Speaker 1: and in between. These are all games that are sort
- 8:47Speaker 1: of varying kinds of storytelling, and I think they together
- 8:53Speaker 1: might make an attractive package that someone might trade for
- 8:56Speaker 1: the Game of Wolf is a social deduction Miscotonic School
- 9:02Speaker 1: for Boys is a social deduction game. Glass Road is
- 9:07Speaker 1: a classic Uve Rosenberg game. This is another one where
- 9:10Speaker 1: I think it's really good. I just it's only so
- 9:13Speaker 1: many mediumweight euros or even medium to heavyweight euros that
- 9:16Speaker 1: I need, and this one. I played it once, I
- 9:18Speaker 1: thought it was good. It's been like two years since
- 9:20Speaker 1: I played it. I haven't gotten to back out. At
- 9:22Speaker 1: some point getting it off the shelves I can make
- 9:24Speaker 1: room for other things makes sense. Bees This is an
- 9:27Speaker 1: interesting abstract puzzle game from Dan Hallstead. I like it
- 9:31Speaker 1: quite a bit, just again, it's about how much room
- 9:34Speaker 1: I have. Also, the game plays a little weird and
- 9:37Speaker 1: it didn't go over. I thought it would go over
- 9:39Speaker 1: better with my wife. I thought she would like it
- 9:41Speaker 1: better than she did. I've got a combo pack of
- 9:44Speaker 1: cat tasteless cats in trouble game. I've got exploding kittens
- 9:48Speaker 1: NSFW and kittens in a Blunder. Biblios is a good
- 9:52Speaker 1: little car card and card game. Some people might call
- 9:56Speaker 1: it a dice game. There are dice in it, but
- 9:58Speaker 1: it's not really a dice game. I don't think you
- 10:01Speaker 1: ever roll them. Maybe you roll them at the beginning,
- 10:04Speaker 1: but after that they are strictly after you roll them,
- 10:10Speaker 1: they are strictly adjusted up and down using cards. They
- 10:14Speaker 1: aren't rolled anymore. Blueprints is a really interesting little game
- 10:19Speaker 1: where you're building towers out of dice. The dice represent
- 10:22Speaker 1: different kinds of building materials. I think that that game
- 10:24Speaker 1: is actually pretty fun. I've played it a few times,
- 10:26Speaker 1: but again, it's been in my cupboard a long time
- 10:29Speaker 1: and I haven't played it, and I don't have any
- 10:31Speaker 1: sentimental attachment to it. So I figure, let's see if
- 10:33Speaker 1: someone else wants it, and I can bring in something
- 10:35Speaker 1: else to try. Railroad Ink Blazing Red addition, I like
- 10:39Speaker 1: Railroad Ink a few times I've played it, but it
- 10:41Speaker 1: wasn't super popular with my family, and so again, in
- 10:46Speaker 1: the interest of cycling games out of the collection the
- 10:49Speaker 1: way it goes. Hostage Negotiator Crime Wave is a sort
- 10:54Speaker 1: of story based expansion to Hostage Negotiator, which is also
- 10:58Speaker 1: included in the game. There's plenty of excitement in the
- 11:03Speaker 1: box if you are interested in that genre. Turing Machine
- 11:07Speaker 1: is a really interesting abstract game that I liked quite
- 11:11Speaker 1: a bit. Or it's an abstract deduction game I like
- 11:13Speaker 1: quite a bit, but again, wasn't super popular with my family.
- 11:18Speaker 1: I did enjoy it, but again, there's only so many,
- 11:22Speaker 1: so much room on the shelf, and for a game
- 11:23Speaker 1: that nobody wants to play, I guess not Takinoko. This
- 11:28Speaker 1: is one I sort of waiver back and forth on
- 11:30Speaker 1: because we had a lot of fun with it when
- 11:31Speaker 1: the kids were younger. It's a really good lightweight set
- 11:34Speaker 1: collection game with a couple different mechanisms. The pieces are
- 11:39Speaker 1: absolutely adorable, but again, who's got I don't have room
- 11:43Speaker 1: for every game I own, and I want to get
- 11:45Speaker 1: new games sometimes, so this is one that feels like
- 11:48Speaker 1: it's been a very long time since I've played it.
- 11:50Speaker 1: I bet other people could enjoy it more than I
- 11:52Speaker 1: have enjoyed it. Detective of Modern Crime board game this one.
- 11:55Speaker 1: We played the whole story and we enjoyed it, but
- 12:00Speaker 1: you know, a certain point, how many more I'm not
- 12:03Speaker 1: going to play it again. And we didn't play any
- 12:05Speaker 1: of the expansions, so I think time to let that
- 12:08Speaker 1: one go. Suburbia this was a one and done for me.
- 12:11Speaker 1: I liked it fine, but I like Castles of Mad
- 12:13Speaker 1: King Ludwig better. No reason to keep both. It's just
- 12:16Speaker 1: the base game. It doesn't have all the fancy stuff
- 12:18Speaker 1: in the like the Suburbia Collector's edition. Also, just the
- 12:22Speaker 1: theme isn't my favorite. The idea of billing Suburbia doesn't
- 12:26Speaker 1: appeal to me that much. Era Medieval Age, this one
- 12:29Speaker 1: feels like a rolling right but without roll and right pieces.
- 12:33Speaker 1: It was really good. I remember thinking it was a
- 12:35Speaker 1: really good lightweight game. But it's in a huge box.
- 12:39Speaker 1: And again we played it once, thought it was fun,
- 12:42Speaker 1: never touched it again, and a certain point, let's get
- 12:45Speaker 1: it on out of here. Alien Artifacts I really liked,
- 12:48Speaker 1: but the rule book was very hard to read and
- 12:50Speaker 1: it ended up being just super complicated. It reminds me
- 12:53Speaker 1: a little bit of fifty first State and Imperial Settlers,
- 12:58Speaker 1: neither of which I've played, but I've read the rules
- 12:59Speaker 1: for both, and in fact, they've started playing fifty first
- 13:02Speaker 1: State on board Game Arena right now, and these games
- 13:05Speaker 1: are Alien Artifacts. Is very similar, feels like it's of
- 13:09Speaker 1: the same genre as the other two. Porta Nigra is
- 13:13Speaker 1: one of the ones where I really hesitated to get
- 13:16Speaker 1: rid of it. I like it a lot. I think
- 13:17Speaker 1: it's a very interesting design, but I got it around
- 13:21Speaker 1: the same time that I got Palaces of Carrara, and
- 13:24Speaker 1: I think Palaces of Kara is the better game of
- 13:26Speaker 1: the two, and I'd probably be happy to play either
- 13:28Speaker 1: one at the same time. Same this goes for Princes
- 13:31Speaker 1: of Florence too, which I traded away because I don't
- 13:33Speaker 1: know how many sort of classic twenty tens euros I
- 13:37Speaker 1: need that are all in the same neighborhood at each other.
- 13:40Speaker 1: Important Niagra is interesting, like if it doesn't trade away,
- 13:43Speaker 1: I won't be sad, but I'd be happy to try
- 13:45Speaker 1: something new instead. And if I feel the itch to
- 13:47Speaker 1: play it, I'll just play Palace of Kara instead, risk
- 13:51Speaker 1: plants versus zombies. I bought this on a win the goodwill.
- 13:54Speaker 1: I'm happy to get rid of it for whatever. Pelican
- 13:56Speaker 1: Bay is an interesting little tile matching game, just very light,
- 14:00Speaker 1: and whenever we feel like playing something like that, we
- 14:02Speaker 1: could play Costa Rica instead. The Final Flick Tire is
- 14:05Speaker 1: a flicking game with a sci fi theme. Really neat.
- 14:08Speaker 1: I just don't have a lot of room for flicking
- 14:10Speaker 1: games in my collection. While a Mope is a wooden
- 14:14Speaker 1: abstract game, it's amusing somebody might want a wooden abstract game.
- 14:19Speaker 1: E Spirits of the Rice Patty is a fun little
- 14:21Speaker 1: economic game. I love the waterflow mechanism, but again, midwaight euros,
- 14:27Speaker 1: I have a lot of them. I don't need more
- 14:30Speaker 1: Kings of Aaron Steam. I'm calling the airships Ahoy Blast
- 14:33Speaker 1: on board blimps, so I'm not only giving away Kings
- 14:36Speaker 1: of Aaron Steam. I'm also adding in Deadly Dirigibles and
- 14:39Speaker 1: Dirigible Disaster, so it's a whole airship themed episode. Zombie
- 14:44Speaker 1: fifteen I've put up for trade. This is a real
- 14:47Speaker 1: time zombie game. It's pretty fun and I painted all
- 14:51Speaker 1: the minis, so hopefully somebody has a good time with it.
- 14:54Speaker 1: Don of the Peacemakers was an interesting game about trying
- 14:57Speaker 1: to It's a puzzle game where you're trying to make
- 15:00Speaker 1: neither side of a military conflict win too strongly. It's
- 15:04Speaker 1: a weird concept but interesting and I enjoyed it. But
- 15:06Speaker 1: it didn't get a lot of love in my family,
- 15:09Speaker 1: and I'm not going to keep playing a game it
- 15:11Speaker 1: didn't get a lot of love. K two is an
- 15:13Speaker 1: excellent mid entry level Euro game. I love the theme.
- 15:18Speaker 1: I think it's really interesting, but again, I've played it
- 15:20Speaker 1: a few times. I don't need to play it again.
- 15:22Speaker 1: On dice Settlers I really like, but it didn't I've
- 15:26Speaker 1: never been able to get other people to play it,
- 15:28Speaker 1: so there it goes. Terrors of London is a duck
- 15:31Speaker 1: building game that's relatively simple, and I have plenty of
- 15:34Speaker 1: duck building games, so who needed that? Well. That brings
- 15:40Speaker 1: me to the end of a very long list of
- 15:43Speaker 1: games that I'm trading in the No Ship Math trade.
- 15:46Speaker 1: I'd love to hear what games you have up for trade,
- 15:49Speaker 1: if you're trading anything, and otherwise, what games are you
- 15:52Speaker 1: thinking about getting rid of Do you have a list,
- 15:54Speaker 1: Share it over on board game Gee can guild three
- 15:56Speaker 1: T sixty nine where we can all marvel together in
- 16:00Speaker 1: the meantime. Thanks for joining me on my walk today.
- 16:02Speaker 1: I hope your next walk is a closant. His mind
- 16:04Speaker 1: was bye.
- 16:04Speaker 2: Bye, brought to you by rattle Box h
