- 0:39Welcome back to hamster with a blunt penknife the Doctor Who
- 0:43commentary podcast mr. Peter, hello.
- 0:48Hello. I just called you mr.
- 0:49Peter, mr. Peter.
- 0:51Yes, Pisa. How are you today?
- 0:57I'm very well. Thanks and very, very pleased to
- 1:00be watching the Romans, which I'm very fond of.
- 1:03And I think you are, too. I think it's marvelous, would
- 1:06you mind telling other people are telling everybody, sorry.
- 1:09Where you poke a stick before? Cuz I know you haven't done a
- 1:11lot of this, but you have podcasting before, haven't you?
- 1:15Yes, I think I did a couple episodes of to watch who couple
- 1:20years ago, so it was defending the gun Fighters and then comes
- 1:27surely you were celebrating. Yes.
- 1:29Well, celebrating, I think that Mark, Mark and Farah, I can't
- 1:33remember whether they were entirely sold but yeah, anything
- 1:39Hartnell historical. And then I was came back for the
- 1:44underwater Menace, which again, I absolutely adore and you're a
- 1:48lot more solid ground. There, weren't you with the pair
- 1:50of, I remember with the particular, one with the
- 1:54underwater Menace that Mark and Sara, will more salt on it than
- 1:59the have been with the gun fires to watch, who you say, I've not
- 2:03heard of it, I'll have to give it a listen.
- 2:04Yeah, would recommend okay, but not sure about the guy that
- 2:09Strange opinions. So yeah, we are heading into
- 2:13black and white Doctor Who into William Hartnell Doctor, Who.
- 2:16And I got a feeling you're quite keen on black, and white era
- 2:20Doctor, Who why is that? So I'm just, I was just
- 2:24distracted by hartnell's watering of a plant pot upon a
- 2:29pot of plans. Yes, so I started watching all,
- 2:34damn it off. Pause it by accident.
- 2:36I started watching already. Yes, my wallet account is in a
- 2:41beer, really? Yeah, this is where I just talk
- 2:44to you at the beginning and then we're, I will literally can't
- 2:46you in five seconds? Five, four, three, two, one.
- 2:48I'm a my rewinding. Yeah.
- 2:50You need to go back to the site of the stalker.
- 2:53There we go. Oh I love it.
- 2:55The come on! Tell me about your love of black
- 2:57and white dogs. Hey, yeah, well, I think it so I
- 3:01became a fun in 2005 with Eccleston, watch the first
- 3:05series and then went on eBay. Actually, maybe it was before
- 3:10the Eccleston series even finished.
- 3:14Did the obvious thing of starting series 1 episode 1 with
- 3:17the series? Not really knowing quite how
- 3:19much to was out there. And again, not really, I think,
- 3:24I knew that episodes of missing, but I didn't quite normal.
- 3:29The episodes necessarily linked together in the weather.
- 3:32The Hartnell Series has our heart or cereals do so.
- 3:39Yeah, that was still. When I think most of them were
- 3:42released, some of them were released on DVD.
- 3:43A lot of them were VHS. So I definitely remember hub
- 3:45from the first three stories on VHS and yeah, I just absolutely
- 3:49love that era. I think just from a historical
- 3:55television history, point of view and I think it's just sort
- 3:59Charming, I love the cast and the characters, the two School
- 4:04teachers, I love that settle could start to start with
- 4:09watching 2005, Christopher X Doctor Who and then watching
- 4:131964, William Hartnell Doctor, Who like that?
- 4:17Such a jarring shift of Peter Cushing.
- 4:23I think I'd seen little bit of a cushion films so actually I
- 4:26possibly expected something a bit closer.
- 4:29To sort of colorful cheesiness obviously, without the color.
- 4:35And I think I watched a lot of old TV anywhere.
- 4:38I think that I was just a very strange sort of per ton of 12
- 4:43year old old films, but yeah, I think I was just so fascinated
- 4:48and I think another thing that I think there's something about,
- 4:51even though that obviously weren't broadcast live about the
- 4:56feels like that sometimes. Yes.
- 4:57And never The fact that it's a bit rough, the edges but the the
- 5:03fact that's the historic walls. I mean I'm a big history Geeks
- 5:07or for me if it's an asteroid or instant win and you know what,
- 5:13right we've with especially William Hartnell Doctor, Who one
- 5:18of the things I just love is there's no formula at this point
- 5:22so they try everything and they have you watched the entirety of
- 5:26William Hartnell dogs who or just gets to be picked?
- 5:28Watch everything I've watched. Just go everywhere.
- 5:31Then they like you just never know from week to week.
- 5:33One week, you're on the sense. Fear the next week you're on the
- 5:35planet V is the next week. You know, you're having fun and
- 5:39War Games with Saladin the next week.
- 5:41You'll with Nero in Rome, like and all done in the corner of
- 5:45lime, Grove students in up to production wise as well.
- 5:48I think it's all over the place in a good way in terms of
- 5:50experimentation with like something like Dalek invasion of
- 5:54Earth, they want of location work and then the sort of
- 5:58puzzle, In on the camera. And I remember having the sort
- 6:04of double Park VHS of the rescue and the Romans, which you
- 6:07always, oh yeah, everybody in the head has that as a minute
- 6:11that it was produced as one one block, wasn't it?
- 6:14And then you got the 2-part, followed by the full partner but
- 6:18for me, I think that it's essentially other.
- 6:21I mean, throw what you say about the The fact that it's so
- 6:26eclectic and everything, but it seems to settle down a bit more
- 6:29as a formula. From, when Susan leaves are feel
- 6:32at least for a short time. I was finding that the first
- 6:36series is anything goes the second series, they like doing
- 6:38Blockbusters aren't they like right, we're a success.
- 6:41Now, do ya, nors garlic invasion of Earth?
- 6:43The web Planet, the chase. You know I'm alone which is also
- 6:48pull it off but they have a go. Yeah and I think that obviously
- 6:51this is the first sort of friend who in there.
- 6:54Like comedy, and it's a very different sort of historical to
- 6:59what we've had before. I think the Vicki has, well I
- 7:03think just the inclusion of Vicki, Maureen O'Brien or I'm at
- 7:08Maureen O'Brien or should I oh, she was lovely.
- 7:12I mean, this was only about nine nine months ago, ish in
- 7:17pandorica, the, the convention in Sheffield, which is
- 7:20brilliant. And I never really went to
- 7:22conventions, but all sides. Pick a person.
- 7:25It's it's Maureen O'Brien. So we did you see more in
- 7:29O'Brien or course you did. You're a dog who fat in the
- 7:32Blu-ray, release the the advert for it.
- 7:35So, yes. So that was very exciting.
- 7:37That was hot that day. It was gorgeous.
- 7:40Yeah, and I think it's a love a love that.
- 7:42You never know what's going to come with those trailers.
- 7:43I think we're with my cut encounter with a was actually
- 7:49out of football. I've got a foot on the wall here
- 7:50somewhere of a million Maureen, O'Brien and cook William.
- 7:54And then I fought with her and Peter and then I got the
- 8:01quillion for tour signed and I remember I was chewing up and
- 8:04she was like, well, if you got the photo yet and the ignore
- 8:13haven't been that many of those conventions or anything, I think
- 8:16that the vibe I get is that she was always a bit distant from
- 8:20that scene. But now I think, I think she was
- 8:23quite honest with Just how to sort of embrace that especially
- 8:27the smaller events like that. And I think long-term ones, you
- 8:31know, she went along to one out of being out of fandom for
- 8:34years, and she has written a few books, and she was very honest.
- 8:37And she went, well, quite a few books to sell.
- 8:38So this far for me, I mean, I think, I think she was very, I
- 8:43think the fact that the Peter was there, like you said, they
- 8:46hadn't seen each other. Since I think it might have been
- 8:49the 2013 Excel and then I might be wrong there, but I think she
- 8:55said that that's what that particular event is what sort of
- 8:58made an Embrace. I think those conventions a lot
- 9:01when window on that because you've got the actors going
- 9:05along. I want to make a bark and fair
- 9:07enough and then you've got the fans going along who are just
- 9:10desperate to have their moment within.
- 9:13So everyone's a winner. Everyone comes away smiling.
- 9:16Yeah, and I love the hearing their insights into I'm ever
- 9:21one. Remember Peter purves tomorrow.
- 9:24No. But I'm asked, what had they
- 9:26seen much of the new series and moral Drive Bone.
- 9:30O'Brien said that she'd seen, I think she'd only watch drawers,
- 9:34and she absolutely loved it. And she said something about she
- 9:37was, she was singing the Praises of Eccleston without me having
- 9:41realized, I think by then she'd recorded a big finish with him.
- 9:45Well, I think I think she's playing a giant spider, like tap
- 9:49dancing spider or something? I hear, he's out now, isn't it?
- 9:52Yeah, that's yeah. And pick a Purvis was saying
- 9:57that I think he'd watched. Yeah, the rules.
- 10:01And then he'd watched, he said, I watched the first a 3D film in
- 10:06an audience for the 50th. So I did the doctor and he said
- 10:12it and yes, he was quite, he didn't have positive opinions on
- 10:17almost, always getting on a bit loud.
- 10:21Is quite fast. Paced, you know, I mean, I think
- 10:25they dropped, if you, if you haven't seen the episode since
- 10:27rules, you might have just been a bit perplexed.
- 10:30Possibly, I feel that every time I watch the Steven, Moffat
- 10:33script River Song is years, was he somebody who we're never
- 10:39going to meet in a convention, and that is William Hartnell.
- 10:41Unfortunately, a who is absolutely on forming this
- 10:45story. And that is the governor is
- 10:48there is the boss. He's the first doctor, he's
- 10:50great. Another, yeah, I love that.
- 10:53We see See a side of him with this, that I think he's, he's
- 10:58absolutely loving the comedies, loving the material, he's going
- 11:01and we'll talk about this a lot more, but I think I just it
- 11:05changes from being that the sort of the, the five doctors the
- 11:09sort of the perception of the fifth of the first doctor, being
- 11:12sort of, irascible, and grumpy and everything.
- 11:15And this, these completely unrecognizable from what he is
- 11:19in Early Child, really. I think the whole season is
- 11:22whole season 2 He's learned to relax a little bit and then,
- 11:26Maureen, O'Brien comes in a absolutely falls in love with
- 11:28her and the pair of them together in this like a pair of
- 11:32school kids to soar naughty, yeah.
- 11:34Brilliant. I've just thought I will get 0
- 11:38Roger but the pit where he says that in a barbecue either what
- 11:41you're insinuating I can't go off on my come on go come on
- 11:45child off we go. Yeah I love it.
- 11:48When he tells Vicki that she's going, they're going to Roman's
- 11:50just like mix, like a squeak. Like I'm really excited Square.
- 11:55It's basically like you and me, if we would have Doctor Who
- 11:57story, you know, we all Vicki and you know, I hate when, I
- 12:01promise we will start the singing the day I did say to you
- 12:04on a messenger, this does contain one of my favorite
- 12:08all-time favorite line readings and Doctor Who, and that is
- 12:11hartnell's deadpan. Kill me here.
- 12:14Oh, I beg your, pardon, he learns the plot that he's
- 12:18embroiled in ice just Sublime. What?
- 12:21See what should we watch the thing?
- 12:22Yes, let's do a nun. AAA a second time.
- 12:26Yes, okay, I'll see what I can do is in charge.
- 12:29Let's do that 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 off we go.
- 12:36You see my favorite hot? No historical.
- 12:41I think it's my favorite haunt historical.
- 12:43I'm able to watch. I think.
- 12:46What's in it? Maybe maybe it's time to do it.
- 12:48Maybe it's time with the Aztecs. Oh yeah.
- 12:50Sexy. Even even those two just saw
- 12:53such a different Beast. It is like comparing like chalk
- 12:57and cheese and that, they're only like, I don't know, I've
- 13:02had the Aztecs is I feel like it's like plotted to the hill,
- 13:06isn't it? Like it's, there's lots going on
- 13:09there more complexity and also all All that but this right of
- 13:12something that people level at 60 stops who are law, is there
- 13:15is slow and I think Dennis gonna get something absolutely right
- 13:19in this in the he gives a plot and doctor and Vicki to Ian and
- 13:24Barbara and we cut back from one to another to another every
- 13:27single episode. So it feels really Pacey.
- 13:30Yeah. It's a weird that I think
- 13:32obviously the three companions has been done and like before
- 13:36this and since this. And I think that the way of
- 13:39splitting the Worry pops wasn't the case with I don't know the
- 13:48name and shame. Yeah.
- 13:49Well yes it just it feels like these are just such like well
- 13:53drawn out characters and all of them with yeah I fell as well.
- 13:58Do. Like they've got fantastic
- 13:59chemistry, all of them you know and how when do we ever get to
- 14:04just chill out likes? It is one load.
- 14:08It's all like Jarring in a good way like I'll be like oh right,
- 14:13okay here we are but that's the time job which is unusual.
- 14:19I want going from the Tardis fallen over to there.
- 14:21Yeah. And of course I remember that
- 14:23the the video chairs of the rescue cut out the Cliffhanger.
- 14:30Oh I so it ends with it ends before it materializes on the
- 14:34cliff top because it was that all thing of when the release
- 14:38the VHS others, even though we really was in a double The get
- 14:41rid of the Cliffhangers on the next episode when it was leading
- 14:45into a different stories that the sort of stood alone, will
- 14:48you say double pack? There was a total cheat, you
- 14:50know, because there was a couple where they introduced, where
- 14:53they release VHS is, where was six episodes on one type.
- 14:57I could do it together keys of marinus, that was another one.
- 15:00Now being conned of our money, that's what it was telling that
- 15:05was the pot because I was getting the VHS is when the dog
- 15:08that all being released. I mean, this was 2005, So there
- 15:13were very weirdly Prime Ambani beer, you'd be paying like a
- 15:16heck of a lot of money for the time monster and then you'd pick
- 15:20up. I don't know.
- 15:23As an upset seven-part or something for the next to
- 15:26nothing. So what this thing was a weird
- 15:29thing about those VHS releases was just came out all over the
- 15:33place, yella Hartnell and then, you know Davison, then you had a
- 15:35McCoy was super, the DVDs to an extent, they gave.
- 15:39Yeah, that's what the DVDs of possibly to a bit more curated.
- 15:42In terms of I've read that there had an endgame of least five
- 15:47years in the end. The new that the last one was
- 15:48going to be Terror of the zygons.
- 15:52You know, that's very funny about both.
- 15:53VHS is I'm the DVDs is that invasion of the dinosaurs?
- 15:57Was one of the last ones released for both the VHS as if
- 16:01as if that story is so bad. Well Envision that I think it's
- 16:05a double whammy I think the one Black and White episode and
- 16:08hoping that it's surmountable by the time they get to the end of
- 16:10the range. Well did you see that colorized
- 16:13version of it? Yeah it wasn't it like colorized
- 16:17it was done via the system that did the whole lot mind of evil
- 16:21through so I don't think was actually Be colorized, was it
- 16:24was with the dots. Yeah, it was very I think you do
- 16:27with the dot. I prefer to watch it in black
- 16:28and white. I saw one, well, it's very
- 16:31telling that I think that's the special fit.
- 16:32The special feature is the colored version, whereas if you
- 16:35play it through, I think that might versions the default.
- 16:38Damn fact that they just, they're just about to go off.
- 16:41Oh no, hang on, they haven't gone off.
- 16:43You have like this is all them. Got a room yet, there's my key
- 16:45and Barbara going to the market. Yes, and Ian and the doctor Just
- 16:53chilling out back in the village Just Chillin.
- 16:56But yeah. And speaking of children here,
- 16:57like I said that when on the VHS you go in at the Romans Tardis,
- 17:02top was off a cliff, that's the start of the story and then
- 17:05suddenly you like right we like a month later, presumably with
- 17:09the just nestled in there. Pretty sure I'd love to.
- 17:12Hey I think there is a like a big novel things called
- 17:15Byzantium set in between. Don't do it, don't read it.
- 17:19I'm really okay. It's written by Keith topic and
- 17:22honestly It's Been a Good Year to sex and violence as they had
- 17:25a want to do back then in with the roots.
- 17:28Hmm. It's a very different portrayal
- 17:30of the Romans to the right. Oh, I'd love to or maybe that
- 17:35means that it's probably be careful what you wish for, but
- 17:38it's it's very intriguing thinking, right?
- 17:42Well, the top it off the cliff. I'd love to see them getting out
- 17:45and being like, oh, well oh well.
- 17:48Oh, what the hell have? I been up to for the last four?
- 17:51Yeah, and then when they stumble upon this, Villa and they just
- 17:54decide to like squat in a, I refused to Blink that this these
- 17:58for troublemakers, the dr. Ian Barbara and Susan managed to
- 18:02just chill out for four months, four months, four weeks, even
- 18:06Susan. I think, I think in a way
- 18:11though, I think it's Vicky Vicky is that extra thing, which I
- 18:15like as well. Maybe there would be chilling a
- 18:18bit more with the Susan and Vicki is even all the doing
- 18:22exactly the same. Thing in the plot was probably
- 18:25presumably story lined as a Susan story, I don't know.
- 18:29But you tell me that why does Maureen O'Brien as Vicki work so
- 18:35well? Whereas I don't know what?
- 18:37That's a good word to say how Carolyn Ford and Susan anymore.
- 18:41I think it's not Carolyn Ford. I think it's the, it's Vicki
- 18:45just loves being there. And traveling I think Susan has
- 18:49all this angst. And she, she has a Phobias,
- 18:53doesn't she? So there's a lot of things that
- 18:56she's scared of that era when she's in that sale rafts.
- 19:00Oh, yeah, she's screaming her head off and shit.
- 19:02And there's the rats and the screaming jungle, she doesn't
- 19:07like the noise was just grabbing a reddish, just go.
- 19:10Yeah, I feel like Vicki, like, if Vicky was too freaked out,
- 19:17you know, you know, you know, that things are bad.
- 19:20I like Vicky and Space Museum, you know, when she comes, right,
- 19:22I'm going to start with Ellucian he said let's break out the
- 19:26gums, you know, just yeah. It's just She just she's so
- 19:32joyous. I think her will see her with
- 19:34obviously Hartnell. And it's that whole thing with,
- 19:39I always prefer the companions who just really want to be there
- 19:42and really enjoy it. You know.
- 19:44Also, are you looking for an unusual contrast from the season
- 19:47to Vicki is I find from Perry to mail in the safety options when
- 19:52you got peruggia's wenge energy levels, the be there as you're
- 19:55supposed to go back to the tireless and then mail comes
- 19:57along and Terror voice and she's up for the adventure.
- 20:00She's, you know, Investigated in all the rooms and she, and it's
- 20:03just so refreshing. It's a breath of fresh air, and
- 20:05I think it's sort of like, it takes away.
- 20:06A bit of a barrier at the story. If there isn't somebody there
- 20:10who's finding up there, he is with us.
- 20:14That's Maximus. Battalion isn't?
- 20:15It actually was patella famous lyre player Quorum.
- 20:20I was watching this with the production subtitles on
- 20:23apparently he was only about 60 to.
- 20:24We look so tiny, man. Yeah.
- 20:28You see this fellow here? The assassin?
- 20:31Yes, he comes back. Doesn't it?
- 20:32Do you know what? Bro, we plays later on in Doctor
- 20:35Who turns into a Volga planned. I wanna see.
- 20:39Oh, is he into a bush and stabbed to
- 20:52death? I mean, but by another man who's
- 20:55had his tongue chopped out, But, I do like that about this, you
- 20:59know, it is blissfully funny this, but there is a bit of an
- 21:03edge to it. There's a scene later on, where
- 21:07Nero's stabs the Centurion and pulls out, and then you get see
- 21:11the blade with the blood on it, and then he just makes a comedy
- 21:15line. He goes, we didn't fight hard
- 21:16enough, but yeah, it's just very like, Gallows, dog humor.
- 21:19But it doesn't sound too violent or too dark, because it's sort
- 21:23of Sorry how campus hot? No happiness.
- 21:28My dear, absolute X and takes. William Russell says, in the
- 21:39documentary I was watching earlier that Dennis Spooner came
- 21:42in and he added all this humor and he said to suddenly the
- 21:45dialogue was just so sayable because it was how people
- 21:48actually talk to that great joke in a minute where he goes all
- 21:51Chesterfield. It's just a turn up.
- 21:53No, Barbara wants you, you know that it's really, really funny.
- 22:00Oh, so you're I could watch this.
- 22:01I could watch this. Those The Forum just hanging
- 22:04about having a bit of food. Oh, but I picture them being
- 22:08just as chummy in like the BBC. Come to, what?
- 22:11No. Do you know what they used to
- 22:12do? I do, I want to know he got a
- 22:15chance. So here's what this Bunch your
- 22:20filthy mind elsewhere. Spread it all out and have a bit
- 22:36of luxury. So it would be like this in real
- 22:38life. The sets are quite noisy, do you
- 22:44know? I've never noticed, but he's
- 22:45eating like, Maureen O'Brien. She's eating a real Apple.
- 22:48Whereas Susan Duncan version of Earth.
- 22:52There's that whole thing where she's every time she's gone a
- 22:54bit bite. An apple.
- 22:56She's distracted. It's one of those like plastic,
- 22:58proper apples, brother, frightened, they're threatened
- 23:02with that. He's getting, he's packing his
- 23:05grips and doctors off. And I love the fact that I treat
- 23:08him like this happens, a couple Of times in the first two
- 23:10seasons where he wants to go off.
- 23:12And they, oh my God, we got keep an eye on him.
- 23:14Like, he's gonna get into trouble, but he hasn't even
- 23:17planned. He's just like, yeah, I'm off to
- 23:18room and then Vicki's just like in the story.
- 23:21It's about the whole thing. So you love it as well when they
- 23:23get to Rome, right? And they realize they're in the
- 23:26middle of this conspiracy plot. They're just loving that as
- 23:29well. They like I'm gonna go from find
- 23:31out. I'll fix that was Vicky squeal.
- 23:33I love that she's great. She froze like still going
- 23:37strong. Yeah.
- 23:41You know, what can you, please make a comment in a second
- 23:43because there are some people that say that you know Barbara
- 23:46are post-coital in a minute when they're sitting around blissed
- 23:50out on yes. Roman any thoughts I think I was
- 24:04talking about this with your partner yesterday.
- 24:06What was she watched us? This first episode in?
- 24:09Ian and Barbara, I think it it from writer to writer the
- 24:13intention. I think changes.
- 24:15Yeah, I agree. And I think that I think this is
- 24:17a there's us, there's, obviously, Their chemistry.
- 24:24There's a lot of chemistry and the Very like player for.
- 24:30I don't think there was any hanky-panky in the toddler's,
- 24:33but I think that definitely, I love the idea that they sort of
- 24:37that relationship blossomed. Yeah, what happens in.
- 24:40Rome stays in the stairs and worlds never mentioned.
- 24:42Yeah, another thing as well, that's really sophisticated
- 24:46about this script is how the jokes.
- 24:51There's like a Delayed pay off in some of the jokes.
- 24:55So in the middle, when the, when the slave Traders come in and
- 25:00it's Barbara as much as the party.
- 25:01Yes. Yes.
- 25:03Hello. That is just hilarious because
- 25:04even the, what's the, What's the phrase that Ian says Enlighten L
- 25:08Temper Temper. Whatever she says that again, in
- 25:12final episode and it's like, like right normalities resume.
- 25:15Now, the back. But isn't that isn't that when
- 25:18he learned in the last episode that, she hit him over the head
- 25:21because you're responsible, For yes.
- 25:23Yeah. We're gonna ship and all of
- 25:25this. Oh, look at, oh, don't look.
- 25:27Don't look so different with the hair.
- 25:29Just slightly I live, I love this in historical Doctor Who's
- 25:36that? You get to get a make them up a
- 25:38bit differently. Didn't like that.
- 25:40So that's one thing I love about the heart and as well that ee
- 25:43obviously loves the dress and open I think well the character
- 25:46loves the dressing up and I think it's not something you
- 25:49always get in live here. Has I don't know too much about
- 25:55hartnell's pre Doctor. Who career.
- 25:57Have you done a lot of Comedy? I know you've done some, it was
- 26:00like just carry on sergeant. But yeah, I mean, to be honest.
- 26:04I mean, the only thing I've really seen a moment.
- 26:07Brighton Rock, always be nice. He is busy A Gangster, he's just
- 26:12very strange saying William Hartnell but like like slightly
- 26:16less all looking and remembering his lines.
- 26:20Yes because it was on film so you refuse this gag about the
- 26:26fridge. Oh yes, yeah, there's another
- 26:30one that's called back again. When he turns it on her in the
- 26:34final episode to get hurt. Look in the fridge.
- 26:40But he's also to go when he says very funny, very exams pissed.
- 26:44As a fart don't like the one that like normally is pretty
- 26:49good enough fire but he gets taken quite easily by the end.
- 26:54Yeah, these don't seem like the most sort of fearsome,
- 27:00especially I've never got the the I think it might be this bit
- 27:02here. The guy with the beard.
- 27:05Hmm. The sort of Junior of the to
- 27:08slave Traders, what he keeps missing a Scabbard.
- 27:11What's all that about dramatic effect?
- 27:14I'm not sure what. Yeah, I do.
- 27:16Is it trying to show that he's an apt?
- 27:17I mean yeah I don't know. All I see is on a scar.
- 27:21This is yeah this is the scene as and I am.
- 27:23Just a day off. I'm telling you, we fall out A
- 27:28Moment Like This you lied about afterwards, maybe not with a
- 27:33Roman goblet. I don't think there's enough but
- 27:40I love that as well. Exactly inhaled you know what,
- 27:50like there's very little like interview footage of Jack and I
- 27:55think there's one convention that she went to.
- 27:57It was filmed. It's on one of the DVDs man.
- 28:02She was good as Barbara there, wasn't she?
- 28:04Hmm. I was reading I read the
- 28:08biography about her. That was published a couple of
- 28:10years ago by some independent publisher.
- 28:15And but how let's just start it off, she worked like Cadbury's,
- 28:20I think some other convictions who worked in the factory
- 28:25because I think a family like said you've gotta leave school.
- 28:28You can't you got to like earn a living or whatever and sure I
- 28:33can Factory and then she ended up with obviously Alvin Rockoff
- 28:39breaks. I wasn't it?
- 28:40Yeah. And I read his memoirs a month
- 28:45or two ago, it's called I'm just the guy who says action I think
- 28:52it's about. It's very like chuckling Hills
- 28:57mentioned quite often but as a sort of him getting home and
- 29:01then her giving Pearls of Wisdom sort of thing, right?
- 29:05And it's all about him working for the BBC and the 50s and 60s
- 29:08and about him. She recommended Sean Connery.
- 29:16For Sean Connery's. First big break really multiple
- 29:20for Connery's Bond. Oh yeah the end so Jaclyn Hill
- 29:22and Sean Connery stards I think it's called a Requiem for a
- 29:26heavyweight which is I think missing now.
- 29:29But yeah she she suggested I think it was something like The
- 29:39casting decision was up to him and she went we can't we can't
- 29:42cast some Scottish cup. He said like he can't even make
- 29:48out what he's saying. He would casting her as an
- 29:49American and gently. He was just like yeah.
- 29:52But if you seen him like the the women are absolutely love them.
- 29:56And I think that was it. I think he just took her advice
- 29:58when Jackie other one of the best stories I ever heard about
- 30:01was from Ann Davies who play Jenny in Dorothea, they became
- 30:05like busy mace. And when she had her children
- 30:09she stop acting. So she came out of acting for
- 30:12like a decade or so. And she realized she'd been out
- 30:18too long and it's really hard to make your mark again afterwards.
- 30:22And apparently, and Davis goes on, well, I'll see what our
- 30:25fancy doing this open University and she was one of these go,
- 30:27let's get it done. People jacking, here she goes,
- 30:30right through all the brochures, she signed us up within a day.
- 30:33We were there doing it by the end of the week.
- 30:35She sounds like an incredible woman.
- 30:37Nobody in their production. If you speak to anyone, William
- 30:40Russell Carolyn for nobody has got a bow both say about 11.
- 30:47There's a very good mythmakers documentary that's about Jaclyn
- 30:52Hill. Hmm interviewing paranoia and I
- 30:56mean I'm a bit sad that of all things for a comeback thought
- 31:01was my glass as much as I mean, I quite like megawatts, it's
- 31:03fine. It does feel like you're sort of
- 31:07Wasting Jacqueline Hilbert. Do you see how she behaves in
- 31:10that? She just sort of gets shot
- 31:12doesn't stand in the way of Ramana but I think that you can
- 31:15tell it's probably filmed it 9:58 and then yeah.
- 31:19Just getting from that gun. All right.
- 31:24And as well I think I think it's just the it's maybe maybe it's a
- 31:29good thing that we muscle wasn't available from Waldron and dead
- 31:33because the probably wouldn't I mean he would have probably
- 31:37mentioned Barbara and her haven't seen her in years or
- 31:40something. Yeah and if I don't know there's
- 31:44there is that influences their that in the rusty Davis, was it
- 31:48death of the doctor? Yeah, the server Jen.
- 31:52Yeah, about the haven't is the coupling Cambridge.
- 31:57I see what? Yeah, he aged a fair bit there
- 31:59between that. Yeah, I mean, obviously caught
- 32:02up with them Barbara's at home. You love the fact that so Vicki
- 32:08in the dr. Cabot stumble across this body
- 32:10in the bush. Okay, and then he's immediately.
- 32:14Miss instead of just go know you've this is a case of
- 32:16mistaken. Identity is Iraq.
- 32:18Come on, we're going to get involved.
- 32:21It's so no way. I love it.
- 32:24I love it. I can't remember the name of the
- 32:26guys in person and there's well your jacket off and you're
- 32:29right. I was watching this without the
- 32:31dialogue. He's got a Christmas in this,
- 32:33isn't he? He could have armed with.
- 32:38Maximus Battalion, the music in this music during some of the
- 32:46fights over comic music. You've ever heard that fight
- 32:52scene in episode 20. It's just Priceless.
- 32:56Who's the fighter? Who's the Fighting episode 2?
- 32:58I'll try it without the way. It's not really much of a fight.
- 33:00It's there there. Assassin coming in to get the
- 33:04doc. Oh yes, of course, you in the
- 33:06very beginning of episode 2. Yeah, it gets tossed, out of a
- 33:08window is hilarious. I will do a bit of quote in
- 33:13length. I love the dialogue, so you read
- 33:15the black archive on this tin you or you've perused it.
- 33:19Yes, I'll read it a couple years ago when I think when I first
- 33:21came out and then I perused it before watching this.
- 33:24And yet it does make a point of the fact that this was obviously
- 33:28the first serious like comedy story.
- 33:32Obviously there's been stories with comedy in it before, but I
- 33:34think this is the first one way is built around the comedy.
- 33:38I mean as you I think you pointed out before like the so
- 33:41much dark stuff happening in it, it's all men getting killed in
- 33:44the bushes and everything, but All of that is sort of like
- 33:49spring all the waste, just the comedy and the, it would be a
- 33:53very different story. If it was played straight first
- 33:57shot, in fact, James Moran, who wrote fires of Pompeii.
- 34:01So that's like the ROM story in the new theories or Roman Empire
- 34:06story. He says that like the bit where
- 34:09teacher lioness is poisoned by Nero, is this poisonous,
- 34:13tigellinus try this, and then he dies because you know, this Also
- 34:17played for Laughs. This would be so long.
- 34:21And you hear of like little stories, especially in the East,
- 34:23where it's been written comedic, and then it's played straight.
- 34:26I think the Leisure Hive might have been one and I think that
- 34:31this is a one-way, could really be like, I mean, that the reign
- 34:35of terror is quite Bleak. And even though there's some
- 34:38comedy in that and I think it all just depends partly on the
- 34:41director and you can go the other way as well.
- 34:43I think Paradise Towers is written fairly seriously and is
- 34:47played. Mmm like a fart.
- 34:50Richard Rose, yeah, totally it's all a bit strange but it is
- 34:56quite serious. He enough, sir and Barbara is
- 35:00actually said taken to a market in a minute, isn't she?
- 35:02And I suppose it's their story. Line is the serious storyline
- 35:05with. I mean, Ricky and the doctor on
- 35:08the periphery of the serious stuff happening.
- 35:10But there's is basically the anything anything that has Nero
- 35:14in. They get all the best thing is
- 35:16going to be comedy. Yeah, the bit later on when He's
- 35:20in the sauna with Arnel. Hmm and it keeps waving The
- 35:25Sword in his face. It's just anything with hard or
- 35:31more in our brightest gold. Hey, what's occurring here?
- 35:35Oh, that's why I say saying, right?
- 35:36You didn't murder Maximus, Battalion, go and get to it.
- 35:41Hmm. Yeah, talks what he's done.
- 35:44What we see 8 is that his tongue cut out for whatever reason she
- 35:48didn't refer to it again like that, it's pretty dark in here.
- 35:52Hmm, it's new Assassin. This is bizarre Cliffhanger of
- 35:56that. Like it's not the moment of
- 35:58Jeopardy is the suspense that the Jeopardy is coming.
- 36:01Yes, yeah. I love this.
- 36:05I love the the music here, as well as I do.
- 36:24How do you think that thing as a scene setter?
- 36:28I think it's great. I think that the set I think It
- 36:33changes gears, it becomes more even more comedic.
- 36:36I think when we get to rule. But yeah, I think it definitely
- 36:42sets the scene. Well, I've heard a lot of people
- 36:44say that a lot of the comedy is contained in episode 3.
- 36:49Hmm, But I'd say that is some of the more uncomfortable comedy.
- 36:55In this story it's certainly I'm going to say the word rapist
- 36:59episode of Doctor Who yes, yes. There has ever been And I will
- 37:05get that. We will talk about that when we
- 37:06get there because this was a different time.
- 37:09This was the time of carry on with beans and about all over
- 37:12the place and things like that. But I think you're right.
- 37:15I think the comedy is Pace throughout the entire story.
- 37:20Yeah. Nothing that when you say about
- 37:21how the characters are split up, I think the tone as well is you
- 37:28know when the doctor turns up in this story that's going to be a
- 37:31light scene. Yeah.
- 37:33And yet, you know that I mean Ian Ian and Barbara prefer
- 37:37really put through the ringer in this story.
- 37:39They must know. Every time I go back in time
- 37:40now. Fuck sake.
- 37:41You know Jesus. No, I'll go through the ringer
- 37:44now. I mean she's a barber in the
- 37:46Crusade. Yeah, I mean that's still the
- 37:49comforter, isn't it? I mean that's very much still.
- 37:51I into the rescue and that. Yeah.
- 37:55Well she's dragging in front of Ella quiere.
- 37:57He says to her death is the or was it.
- 38:00Yeah. The only pleasure left for you
- 38:02is deaf. And If is very far away.
- 38:04Damn, it's dark. That's all right.
- 38:07And the amount of I mean yes like in 20 years time Perry has
- 38:13a quite bad as well with being listed over by men but Barbara.
- 38:17Yeah, I just feel like Barbara as a sort of mature woman, she
- 38:22can hold her own and difference between what happens with Perry
- 38:26and their stories and barber in. This is I basically think she
- 38:29runs rings around Nero despite the fact that she's the one
- 38:31problem. Yes.
- 38:33Mumbling fall. But yeah, and actually I think
- 38:36she does that a lot. She runs.
- 38:37I think she uses her intelligence and I think being
- 38:42able to tell the mindset of other people.
- 38:45Yeah. Well, that's all over fabulous,
- 38:50honestly. And I'm glad we saved a bit of
- 38:52time to talk about Jaclyn Hill. Should we skip into episode 2?
- 38:56Yes, let's start straight off but let's do it.
