- 0:01Speaker 1: Live from the Skying New Center. This is the Kenny Report.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Thank you Andrew Clonel. Andrew Clonel their Sky News political editor.
- 0:13Speaker 2: With our role and coverage of events from the Middle East.
- 0:15Speaker 2: This is an historic day. We believe twenty the twenty
- 0:19Speaker 2: remaining living hostages Israeli hostages held by Hamas will be
- 0:25Speaker 2: freed by the end of the day. So far seven
- 0:28Speaker 2: have been freed and are in the hands of the
- 0:31Speaker 2: Red Cross. So there are thirteen more live hostages to
- 0:34Speaker 2: be released today, and there are twenty eight bodies of
- 0:39Speaker 2: dead hostages as well. President Trump is due to arrive
- 0:42Speaker 2: in Israel in the next few minutes. We will take
- 0:45Speaker 2: you to that live when it occurs. We'll also cross
- 0:49Speaker 2: to Israel and cross to other events and other talent
- 0:53Speaker 2: around the country here as we look at these events
- 0:57Speaker 2: and consider their implications for the Middle East, for the world,
- 1:00Speaker 2: and for our own country. If you just joined me,
- 1:03Speaker 2: it's Chris Kenny here with the Kenny Report going on
- 1:06Speaker 2: for the next hour. As we continue here on Sky
- 1:08Speaker 2: News our rolling coverage of the hostage releases in Israel,
- 1:13Speaker 2: as Donald Trump arrives in Bengurion Airport and off to
- 1:18Speaker 2: Jerusalem to cement his peace deal. I'm joined at Sky
- 1:23Speaker 2: News here by Shary Markson. Sky News host Sharry Markson,
- 1:26Speaker 2: who's joined our rolling coverage and Shary tell us about
- 1:29Speaker 2: your personal thoughts about what you've seen unfold today.
- 1:34Speaker 3: Well, Chris, just for viewers who are just tuning in
- 1:36Speaker 3: now for your program, we might mention that seven hostages
- 1:41Speaker 3: have now been handed over from Hamas to the Red
- 1:45Speaker 3: Cross and they are now in the hands of the IDF.
- 1:50Speaker 3: Those seven hostages are presumably in terrible condition. We haven't
- 1:54Speaker 3: heard word of that, but we have been told that
- 1:56Speaker 3: they can all walk independently.
- 2:00Speaker 4: Look, this is.
- 2:01Speaker 3: An incredibly emotional night. The world is watching the release
- 2:06Speaker 3: of these hostages. We'd almost given up hope that they
- 2:11Speaker 3: would be released, that Hermas would let go of their
- 2:14Speaker 3: final leverage. There would fifty hostages, and then gradually over
- 2:18Speaker 3: time the number of living hostages kept falling. Now just
- 2:23Speaker 3: twenty of those fifty are alive, some of them fathers, brothers, boyfriends,
- 2:31Speaker 3: sons so young. So it's going to be just so
- 2:36Speaker 3: incredible when we finally do see them in the arms
- 2:40Speaker 3: of their loved ones, and we know that vision will
- 2:43Speaker 3: be shared on social media right around the world. Their
- 2:47Speaker 3: family members are just waiting to hold them.
- 2:49Speaker 4: For all of us. It means so much. Chris. Every night,
- 2:52Speaker 4: you and I both Chris. Every night.
- 2:55Speaker 3: We have reported on the plight of the hostages for
- 2:58Speaker 3: two years. We have told their stories. We have tried
- 3:03Speaker 3: to make sure Australians remembered why this war began, why
- 3:07Speaker 3: this war couldn't end. The Albanezi government constantly demanded a ceasefire,
- 3:12Speaker 3: called for Israel to withdraw. Never happen until these hostages
- 3:19Speaker 3: were safe and home.
- 3:21Speaker 2: We'll come back to some of those implications later. Sharry,
- 3:24Speaker 2: stay there with us. Vacan Shari Markson. We're going to
- 3:26Speaker 2: continue with the live pictures throughout this program of what's
- 3:30Speaker 2: unfolding in Israel. What you're looking at there is live
- 3:32Speaker 2: pictures of Hostages Square in Tel Aviv. People have been
- 3:36Speaker 2: gathering in this square for two years, the relatives, the friends,
- 3:40Speaker 2: the supporters of hostages, desperate for this day, desperate for
- 3:44Speaker 2: the day when the last of the hostages will be returned.
- 3:47Speaker 2: I want to cross live now to Hostages Square, where
- 3:50Speaker 2: we're joined by Linda ben Venish, who's with the Australian
- 3:53Speaker 2: National Council of Jewish Women. Linda great to talk to you,
- 3:58Speaker 2: let us know if you can hear us and tell
- 4:00Speaker 2: us about what's going on there is. The news must
- 4:03Speaker 2: have broken that seven of the hostages have now been
- 4:06Speaker 2: handed over to the Red Cross.
- 4:10Speaker 5: That's yes, absolutely amazing to speak with Electic seven of
- 4:15Speaker 5: the hospital the Red with the ideas and I know
- 4:22Speaker 5: the family. I now think the photographs of their their children,
- 4:26Speaker 5: their husbands and brothers some incredible here. And really what
- 4:32Speaker 5: I want to say is Jack the woman's media covering
- 4:36Speaker 5: turn away. Then they have never before they have seen
- 4:41Speaker 5: this war as some sort of because you know, a
- 4:47Speaker 5: war for war's stake, but it's not. It's always been
- 4:50Speaker 5: a war for the hostage. This is such a tiny country,
- 4:54Speaker 5: six nine and a half. Everybody knows somebody in the
- 4:58Speaker 5: defense of October seven, and literally we translate the Americans,
- 5:04Speaker 5: seven people were killed to nine and a half thousand
- 5:12Speaker 5: people were taking hostage. Cannot see of the trauma has
- 5:18Speaker 5: created in this society.
- 5:20Speaker 2: Yeah, and part of the reason the political response in
- 5:24Speaker 2: Israel has been so Fracturedlyn there is course, it's a
- 5:27Speaker 2: vibrant democracy, and some people want to continue to the
- 5:31Speaker 2: war till it's bitter end, to get rid of all
- 5:33Speaker 2: of Hummas. And there are other people who from the
- 5:35Speaker 2: get go have said basically surrender, give Hummas whatever they want,
- 5:38Speaker 2: we just want our hostages back. That's that's been the
- 5:41Speaker 2: divergence of views. And I've heard those views in Hostages
- 5:44Speaker 2: Square earlier this year, where people have so many different
- 5:47Speaker 2: views on how to how to secure the peace and
- 5:50Speaker 2: end the war. But the one thing they're all united
- 5:53Speaker 2: on is they desperate to get the hostages back.
- 5:56Speaker 6: Now.
- 5:56Speaker 2: Sadly, even those people whose loved ones have been killed,
- 6:00Speaker 2: they know they're dead, they're desperate to get their bodies
- 6:03Speaker 2: back just to have a burial. Tell us about that
- 6:06Speaker 2: sentiment that seems to be particularly strong in Israel.
- 6:11Speaker 5: And I will say, I think I think many of
- 6:15Speaker 5: these are square rounds on Saturday night and the chance.
- 6:19Speaker 7: And he's recurring and coming from the.
- 6:21Speaker 5: Station and.
- 6:24Speaker 2: Not left, not right.
- 6:25Speaker 5: Pically, only the hostages.
- 6:27Speaker 8: That's where the focus is.
- 6:29Speaker 5: Yeah, all of the coverage sentimental, even the families.
- 6:35Speaker 2: Of getting their.
- 6:36Speaker 5: Lives saying that their hearts are with those they are
- 6:41Speaker 5: not receiving. Incredibly sad it is their story.
- 6:55Speaker 4: There's anger, the.
- 6:58Speaker 5: Fear and anxiety says you know, a sense of disbelief and.
- 7:08Speaker 2: Focus on life time and.
- 7:13Speaker 5: Recognizing that we had to take care of.
- 7:20Speaker 2: And Linda, thanks so much for joining us. We'll try
- 7:28Speaker 2: and keep in touch with you, maybe cross back to
- 7:30Speaker 2: you a little later as we get more news of
- 7:33Speaker 2: hostages being released and President Donald Trump arrives in Israel.
- 7:37Speaker 2: That's Linda ben Manas she's with the National Council of
- 7:40Speaker 2: Jewish Women in Australia. She's the president of that organization.
- 7:44Speaker 2: She's in Tel Aviv, as you've just heard, and she's
- 7:47Speaker 2: sharing with the Israeli people. They're the joy after this
- 7:51Speaker 2: long haul of seven hundred and thirty seven days, two
- 7:54Speaker 2: years and a week, one hundred and five weeks, just extraordinary,
- 7:58Speaker 2: and seven hostage have been freed. I've been talking about
- 8:02Speaker 2: this with Sky News ho Shari Markson, who has been
- 8:05Speaker 2: a lioness for the Jewish community over the past two years.
- 8:08Speaker 2: And Shari, we were talking then about the importance of
- 8:10Speaker 2: getting the hostages back. Now you and I have both
- 8:14Speaker 2: been to Israel and met with hostage families and met
- 8:17Speaker 2: with people closely associated with this, and there's been stories
- 8:21Speaker 2: we've followed along the way, and every victim of this
- 8:25Speaker 2: horrible war is equal, and every story is worth telling,
- 8:28Speaker 2: but sometimes through our personal connections we follow them more closely.
- 8:33Speaker 2: And one story that I've followed closely, one person on
- 8:35Speaker 2: really desperate to see released today is Nimrod Cohen because
- 8:40Speaker 2: I met his mother in Israel earlier this year, and
- 8:43Speaker 2: I had her on the program going back a few weeks.
- 8:46Speaker 2: Nimrod Cohen was in the Israeli military, but he was
- 8:50Speaker 2: in a here we go, hang on, let's go live
- 8:53Speaker 2: to the first pictures here.
- 8:55Speaker 5: No, so, here we go.
- 8:56Speaker 2: We're going to these pictures here, not live. We're replaying
- 9:01Speaker 2: the vision of what occurred. Sorry, we've lost that. Now
- 9:05Speaker 2: we're relying on international feeds. Here. We're going to give
- 9:07Speaker 2: you the best coverage we possibly can. What you saw
- 9:10Speaker 2: a flash off then was live to USK. But these
- 9:13Speaker 2: were pictures shot some time ago, some fifteen or twenty
- 9:16Speaker 2: minutes ago, when the hostages were inside Red Cross vehicles.
- 9:21Speaker 2: In other words, that'd been handed over from Hamas to
- 9:25Speaker 2: the Red Cross, and they have been delivered then by
- 9:28Speaker 2: the Red Cross to the Israeli security forces. We will
- 9:31Speaker 2: get those pictures back if we can, as soon as possible.
- 9:35Speaker 2: But as I was saying, to you, here we go,
- 9:37Speaker 2: here are these pictures these are the first pictures of
- 9:40Speaker 2: the Red Cross vehicles leaving Gaza with the seven freed
- 9:47Speaker 2: Israeli hostages. I was saying Shari that one of the
- 9:50Speaker 2: people I'm desperate to see released today. Of course, we
- 9:52Speaker 2: will want all twenty living hostages released. But Nimrod Cohen,
- 9:56Speaker 2: I met his mother, I interviewed his mother. He was
- 10:00Speaker 2: and Israeli Defense Forces tank operative. He was working in
- 10:04Speaker 2: a tank trying to keep the border secure. The tank
- 10:07Speaker 2: was disabled. The terrorists lit a fire under it so
- 10:11Speaker 2: that the soldiers inside had to come out, and they
- 10:14Speaker 2: were captured. And here's what Vicky Cohen said about the
- 10:18Speaker 2: trauma of having her son captive for so long.
- 10:23Speaker 9: It's safe to end the war in Gaza and bring
- 10:27Speaker 9: back all the hostages that are there.
- 10:30Speaker 10: And one of them is my son. Nimod is still alive,
- 10:34Speaker 10: and he needs to be brought home.
- 10:38Speaker 9: And it's so many days, six hundred and twenty nine
- 10:41Speaker 9: days in Israel, and you cannot imagine to.
- 10:45Speaker 10: Wait so long. It's almost two years that they haven't
- 10:49Speaker 10: heard or see and I didn't. I didn't have the
- 10:56Speaker 10: ability to hold them and to hug him.
- 11:00Speaker 9: And it's time. It's time to hand war it's time
- 11:05Speaker 9: to finish this night mirror, Sherry.
- 11:09Speaker 2: That was Vicky Cohen some weeks ago. But that's the
- 11:11Speaker 2: human side of this. At some stage today, hopefully within
- 11:15Speaker 2: the next hour, Vicki Cohen will hug her son for
- 11:19Speaker 2: the first time in seven hundred and thirty seven days.
- 11:23Speaker 3: And by the way, Chris Nimrod, who've just been speaking about,
- 11:26Speaker 3: was only nineteen, a teenager, I mean, still really a boy,
- 11:30Speaker 3: nineteen when he was taken hostage in Gaza. And so
- 11:35Speaker 3: you mentioned he was a tank operative. There were three
- 11:37Speaker 3: other soldiers with him on that tank near one of
- 11:40Speaker 3: the kibbutzers, the nahal Oz Kibbutz, and those three other
- 11:46Speaker 3: soldiers with.
- 11:46Speaker 4: Him were all immediately killed.
- 11:49Speaker 3: Their bodies were dragged on October seven, and their bodies
- 11:52Speaker 3: were taken into Gaza.
- 11:54Speaker 4: So you think that Nimrod Cohen.
- 11:56Speaker 3: Survived, that he survived October seven, yet to watch his
- 12:01Speaker 3: three friends and colleagues being killed. Now he's twenty one.
- 12:05Speaker 3: Taken in there as a nineteen year old, he's lost
- 12:07Speaker 3: two years of his life now twenty one. He's not
- 12:11Speaker 3: in the first seven that have already are in the
- 12:14Speaker 3: safe hands of the IDF. He is meant to be
- 12:17Speaker 3: released around six pm our time. In that second group
- 12:22Speaker 3: of thirteen hostages. You know, and I also think you know,
- 12:27Speaker 3: as you say, there's so many stories. I mean, I
- 12:29Speaker 3: also think of Omri Moran, the father, the forty eight
- 12:32Speaker 3: year old father. He's a shiatsu therapist. He was the
- 12:35Speaker 3: head gardener at Kibbutz near Oz. He was abducted from
- 12:39Speaker 3: his home in front of his wife and two daughters.
- 12:42Speaker 3: I mean, can you imagine his two little girls. I mean,
- 12:45Speaker 3: we both have children, Chris. Can you imagine his two
- 12:47Speaker 3: little girls spending two years not knowing what had happened
- 12:51Speaker 3: to their dad. They saw with their own eyes the
- 12:54Speaker 3: terrorists kidnap him. He's meant to be in very poor
- 12:58Speaker 3: physical and mental condition, but he's coming home to his
- 13:04Speaker 3: family with his little girls.
- 13:06Speaker 2: Just incredible, sharing, just incredible. There is so much joy today,
- 13:10Speaker 2: even though there's so much uncertainty and so many problems
- 13:12Speaker 2: in the future. There is so much more. I'll come
- 13:14Speaker 2: back to you, Shari for more on that in a moment.
- 13:17Speaker 2: I just want to show you again those first pictures
- 13:20Speaker 2: of the hostages being freed. Here we are in these
- 13:23Speaker 2: Red Cross vehicles. Are the first seven hostages today released
- 13:27Speaker 2: by humas on their way back to Israel via the
- 13:30Speaker 2: Israeli Defense Forces. There they are leaving Garza. Just incredible
- 13:35Speaker 2: scenes to be reunited with their families within ours obviously,
- 13:39Speaker 2: medical checks and all the rest of it. Notwithstanding, let
- 13:42Speaker 2: me go now live to Jerusalem and catch up with
- 13:45Speaker 2: our good friend Gerald Steinberg. He's the professor of politics
- 13:48Speaker 2: at Bar Allahan University. We've spoken to him throughout this war.
- 13:53Speaker 2: Very good to talk to you again, Gerald. Can you
- 13:56Speaker 2: tell us about your thoughts today? Firstly, as in Israeli,
- 14:01Speaker 2: just the day unfolding where you were seeing the last
- 14:04Speaker 2: of the hostages return to your country. Unfortunately we've lost
- 14:14Speaker 2: Gerald Steinberg there in Jerusalem. We will come back to him,
- 14:17Speaker 2: but who are bringing instead now? Shari Marson is staying
- 14:20Speaker 2: with us. But also I want to go to Dave Shaman,
- 14:22Speaker 2: now the Liberal Senator for New South Wales and shadow
- 14:24Speaker 2: Assistant Minister for Treasury. He, as you know, has been
- 14:27Speaker 2: a regular guest on our program and he's the former
- 14:30Speaker 2: Australian Ambassador to Israel. Dave, you would have hoped to
- 14:34Speaker 2: see this happening for so long, but it's such a
- 14:38Speaker 2: momentous day. The joy of the Israelis must be palpable.
- 14:42Speaker 11: It's a hugely momentous day. Christen I, you know, along
- 14:46Speaker 11: with many thousands of others around the world, certainly hope
- 14:50Speaker 11: to see this day come, but we were never sure
- 14:52Speaker 11: we would say it, Let's be honest, you know. But
- 14:54Speaker 11: the fact that these twenty hostages are the last remaining
- 14:58Speaker 11: hostages who are still alive going home and back with
- 15:01Speaker 11: their families is an immense relief all throughout Israel. But
- 15:05Speaker 11: I think it should be for anyone who cares for
- 15:07Speaker 11: the sanctity of human life anywhere in the world.
- 15:10Speaker 2: Absolutely, Dave, Now, this is a day of great joy
- 15:14Speaker 2: and relief for Israeli's getting the hostages back. It's also
- 15:18Speaker 2: a great day of relief and hope for the people
- 15:21Speaker 2: of Gaza. Because the guns have fallen silent these past
- 15:24Speaker 2: few days. There is a ceasefire that can dare to
- 15:27Speaker 2: hope of an enduring peace. But in the political landscape
- 15:30Speaker 2: scape of Israel, just the return of the hostages, to
- 15:35Speaker 2: my mind, is momentous. Whatever else happens when it comes
- 15:39Speaker 2: to peace deals and medium term and permanent arrangements for
- 15:43Speaker 2: the Palestine, Palestinian territories and Gaza. Tell Us how important
- 15:47Speaker 2: it is to the government of Israel, to the Prime
- 15:50Speaker 2: Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and to the people that they've got
- 15:55Speaker 2: all the hostages back.
- 15:57Speaker 11: Look, it's massively important, Chris. I mean, you know, Israel
- 16:01Speaker 11: has spent years in the past, before this crisis, trying
- 16:06Speaker 11: to recover, years of effort releasing thousands of palasin in prisoners,
- 16:10Speaker 11: to recover one Israeli soldier or one Israeli a person
- 16:14Speaker 11: who's been kidnapped, or one body who they know that
- 16:17Speaker 11: is being held. So you know, the fact that two
- 16:21Speaker 11: hundred and fifty people were taken and I've over forty
- 16:24Speaker 11: eight still being held by hostage, you cannot overstate how
- 16:28Speaker 11: large that has loomed in Israeli politics. I mean, they
- 16:31Speaker 11: attach a very high value to getting their love one
- 16:35Speaker 11: time and even getting their bodies home if sadly they're
- 16:37Speaker 11: no longer alive. So this is massive, I mean, and
- 16:41Speaker 11: this has been one of their main military goals throughout
- 16:44Speaker 11: this campaign to recover the hostages.
- 16:46Speaker 2: It's a solemn national promise in Israel that whoever is taken,
- 16:50Speaker 2: we will bring you home, dead or alive, we will
- 16:53Speaker 2: bring you back to Israel. It's well known and it
- 16:55Speaker 2: is very solemn, and as you say, from the lowliest
- 16:59Speaker 2: soldier to the most high ranking politician, they know this
- 17:02Speaker 2: is a commitment they have to fulfill. And this is
- 17:05Speaker 2: obviously something that Hamas and other terrorist organizations have exploited
- 17:10Speaker 2: in the past.
- 17:12Speaker 11: Look, that's very true. I mean, you know Yaya Sinwa,
- 17:16Speaker 11: who was the mastermind of the seventh of October terrorist attacks.
- 17:19Speaker 11: He was released from an Israeli jail in exchange for
- 17:23Speaker 11: Gilad Shaleid, an Israeli soldier who had been abducted by
- 17:25Speaker 11: AMAS in the early two thousands. So you know, that's
- 17:29Speaker 11: the sort of price they are prepared to pay and
- 17:31Speaker 11: the risk they are prepared to run, because, as you say,
- 17:33Speaker 11: it's a covenant between the people and their government that
- 17:36Speaker 11: the government will leave no stone unturned to bring back Israelis.
- 17:41Speaker 2: Tell us about what you would know about Hostages Square.
- 17:44Speaker 6: We're seeing it there.
- 17:45Speaker 2: It may not have been Hostages Square last time you
- 17:48Speaker 2: were there, but I'm not certain if you've been there
- 17:51Speaker 2: over the last two years. But certainly it has been
- 17:54Speaker 2: a daily focal point of the country. There have been
- 17:57Speaker 2: relatives and supporters there, there have been displays. There is
- 18:00Speaker 2: even a tunnel fabricated there so you can walk through
- 18:04Speaker 2: a tunnel and experience what the hostages have been experiencing.
- 18:08Speaker 2: And so for hundreds of thousands of Israelis to be
- 18:11Speaker 2: gathering there today as they have done in the past
- 18:14Speaker 2: forty eight seventy two hours, it has become a real
- 18:18Speaker 2: full crumb of national pride enjoy at the moment it has.
- 18:22Speaker 11: And look, I knew Hostage Square before it was Hostage Square.
- 18:25Speaker 11: I've been there since I was there in May last year.
- 18:28Speaker 11: There's been a Hostage Embassy if you like, where the
- 18:31Speaker 11: families of hostages speak to international guests and dignitries. You
- 18:35Speaker 11: might have met with them there as well, Chris to
- 18:38Speaker 11: tell of their personal ordeal to urge international countries in
- 18:42Speaker 11: the world not to forget the plight of the hostages.
- 18:45Speaker 11: And it's been a focal point ever since the seventh
- 18:47Speaker 11: of October. I mean every day over the last two years,
- 18:50Speaker 11: there would have been people gathered in Hostage Square, people
- 18:53Speaker 11: making speeches, people urging people to sign petitions, flags waving,
- 18:58Speaker 11: just to keep the memory and the hope of the
- 19:00Speaker 11: hostages alive. And to see that hope now reward. It
- 19:03Speaker 11: is really a beautiful thing.
- 19:05Speaker 2: Now. The ugly side of this, Dave Schamra kind of
- 19:07Speaker 2: links the two things we've been talking about. We don't
- 19:10Speaker 2: want to underestimate the jaw here. It is on the
- 19:13Speaker 2: whole and momentous and joyous day. But of course Israel
- 19:16Speaker 2: as having to release terrorists. Terrorists have been arrested for
- 19:19Speaker 2: what they've been doing in Gaza and other parts of
- 19:23Speaker 2: the country, some of these known murderers. There must be
- 19:27Speaker 2: a huge security risk in allowing these people to be
- 19:30Speaker 2: free in the Palestinian territories or perhaps in third countries,
- 19:34Speaker 2: and also just a feeling of perhaps in security amongst
- 19:42Speaker 2: the Israeli people that these types of people are being
- 19:44Speaker 2: set free.
- 19:46Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 19:46Speaker 11: Look, I think that's right, Chris. I mean, I think
- 19:48Speaker 11: it's almost two thousand prisoners of being released from Israeli
- 19:52Speaker 11: jails and returned to Gaza. I don't know the details
- 19:57Speaker 11: of all of them. Some of them undoubtedly have boodles hands,
- 20:00Speaker 11: They've been involved in terror sacks, they've been involved in
- 20:03Speaker 11: the murder of some civilians, women, children, the elderly, been
- 20:07Speaker 11: involved in lynchings. I mean, just terrible stuff, and it's
- 20:13Speaker 11: it's sad and it's regrettable, but ultimately, you know, this
- 20:17Speaker 11: is a decision that Israel needs to make. I think
- 20:19Speaker 11: the Israeli public across the spectrum is overwhelmingly supportive of
- 20:25Speaker 11: doing this swap, because, as we were saying earlier, they've
- 20:28Speaker 11: always believed in making every effort, paying any price, really
- 20:32Speaker 11: to get their family members and loved ones back to
- 20:36Speaker 11: the state of Israel.
- 20:38Speaker 2: Joining us. Dave, we might come back to you in
- 20:40Speaker 2: a while if we can, because I just want to
- 20:42Speaker 2: catch up with Charry Marxsting and I know it's how
- 20:44Speaker 2: Strap says seven hundred and thirty eight days. I've been
- 20:47Speaker 2: saying seven hundred and thirty seven What is effectively this
- 20:49Speaker 2: seven hundred and thirty eighth day today? Indeed, so it
- 20:52Speaker 2: is just over two years. Let's bring in Shari Marks
- 20:56Speaker 2: And one of the things I wanted to ask you,
- 20:57Speaker 2: I think you might have some breaking news for us
- 20:58Speaker 2: as well. That's that first, Jerry, let us start what
- 21:01Speaker 2: you've we found out.
- 21:02Speaker 3: I just got off the phone from Israeli Prime Minister
- 21:05Speaker 3: Benjamin Nettinya, who's office, and I spoke with the spokesman
- 21:09Speaker 3: and he was with Nadi Yahoo at Bengurian Airport and
- 21:13Speaker 3: they were sitting with Steve Whitcoff Jared Kushna and Ivanka
- 21:18Speaker 3: Ivana Trump and they were waiting for the President's arrival
- 21:23Speaker 3: in minutes.
- 21:23Speaker 4: So I was just on the phone to Netdiya, who spokesman,
- 21:26Speaker 4: as I said, So Nadan.
- 21:27Speaker 3: Yahoo, Steve Whitcoff, Jared Kushner, and Evana are at Bengurion
- 21:33Speaker 3: Airport right now. President Trump's Air Force one is expected
- 21:38Speaker 3: to land within minutes, and we'll see Marco Rubio, Pete
- 21:41Speaker 3: Haig Seth, and Carolyn Levitt disembark as well. So that's
- 21:46Speaker 3: just minutes away. Then, Chris, I might also mention we
- 21:49Speaker 3: are starting to see some images now being released of
- 21:55Speaker 3: families speaking to their hostage.
- 21:58Speaker 4: The hostage.
- 21:59Speaker 2: Just what I was going to tell you, Sharry, I've
- 22:00Speaker 2: just been sent we're speaking about Nimrod Cohen, and I've
- 22:04Speaker 2: just been sent a video footage of him speaking on
- 22:08Speaker 2: an iPhone of facetiming his family from captivity. He's still
- 22:12Speaker 2: in captivity, but obviously he's on his way to them.
- 22:15Speaker 2: He's on his way via the Red Cross to his family.
- 22:18Speaker 2: And there he is, Nimrod Cohen, taken as you say,
- 22:21Speaker 2: when he was nineteen. His family seeing him now for
- 22:25Speaker 2: the first time in two years now to these twenty
- 22:27Speaker 2: one years old and Shary, just incredible. You're saying there's
- 22:31Speaker 2: more hostages in that situation as we speak.
- 22:33Speaker 3: So yeah, So Martan Zangorka, so he's the boyfriend of
- 22:38Speaker 3: Ilana Grizzutski. So we've got footage that I think your
- 22:43Speaker 3: producer has ready to play you in just a moment
- 22:46Speaker 3: of Matan speaking to his mother enough and Ilana over
- 22:52Speaker 3: the phone. Now, Chris, what's so significant is about this
- 22:56Speaker 3: is the IDF have not confirmed, We have had no
- 22:59Speaker 3: confirmation at all that that second group of thirteen hostages
- 23:03Speaker 3: have been.
- 23:03Speaker 4: Handed over to the I d F.
- 23:05Speaker 3: Yet all of this vision and images that we're starting
- 23:08Speaker 3: to see that is from the second group. So the
- 23:10Speaker 3: indications are judging by the fact this footage has been released,
- 23:14Speaker 3: is that that second group of thirteen hostages or they
- 23:17Speaker 3: must have been handed over to the I d F
- 23:20Speaker 3: from the Red Cross already.
- 23:21Speaker 4: Let let's play if we can't.
- 23:46Speaker 2: And just incredible stuff. There a family reunited digitally moments
- 24:06Speaker 2: or hours hopefully before they're reunited physically. Now, Sharry, I
- 24:10Speaker 2: don't speak Hebrew. I'll get an interpretation from you. In
- 24:12Speaker 2: a moment, we could all we could all hear the
- 24:15Speaker 2: elation and the excitement and perhaps the impatience about getting together.
- 24:19Speaker 2: I was just going to say when it came to
- 24:22Speaker 2: your earlier commentary too. They may be in the hands
- 24:24Speaker 2: of the Red Cross already, they may may have been
- 24:27Speaker 2: given phones and the like by the Red Cross, but
- 24:29Speaker 2: either them or all the weight to the Israeli military,
- 24:33Speaker 2: whatever it is, we know that second group of thirteen
- 24:36Speaker 2: hostages is on their way out and they're certainly out
- 24:39Speaker 2: of the hands of Hummas if they're engaging in that
- 24:41Speaker 2: sort of communication.
- 24:42Speaker 4: Right exactly. That's what's so incredible, is that.
- 24:47Speaker 3: Oh unless Hermas is allowing them to ring their family members.
- 24:51Speaker 3: I mean, that's the other scenario, because the reason I
- 24:55Speaker 3: called the Prime Minister's office was just to get clarification
- 24:58Speaker 3: on that have the second group of being released or not.
- 25:02Speaker 3: But as I said, he was at the airport awaiting
- 25:04Speaker 3: the arrival of President Trump, so he couldn't shed any
- 25:07Speaker 3: light on that fact. But we are seeing that second
- 25:10Speaker 3: members from that second group of thirteen hostages are making
- 25:14Speaker 3: contact with their family members. Chris, I actually don't speak Hebrew.
- 25:18Speaker 3: I did learn it when I was younger, but unfortunately
- 25:22Speaker 3: I cannot remember it. Now, so I can't tell you
- 25:24Speaker 3: what they're saying in that video, but like you, you
- 25:27Speaker 3: can hear the elation and the joy. And I spent
- 25:31Speaker 3: time with Matun's girlfriend, Ilana when I was in Israel
- 25:34Speaker 3: and know she was. I can't tell you just how
- 25:37Speaker 3: depressed she was. She couldn't move on knowing her boyfriend
- 25:41Speaker 3: was still in the tunnels of Gaza. And Chris, you
- 25:45Speaker 3: mentioned Nimrod Cohen, you'd interviewed his mother, and we just
- 25:47Speaker 3: saw his picture on the screen a moment ago, and
- 25:50Speaker 3: you can see in his face how emaciated he looks
- 25:53Speaker 3: when he was kidnapped at nineteen. And I've seen the images,
- 25:56Speaker 3: as have you and many of our viewers of him
- 25:58Speaker 3: as a nineteen year old, very handsome man, healthy looking.
- 26:04Speaker 3: I mean, we're expecting these hostages, Israeli officials have said,
- 26:08Speaker 3: we are expecting the hostages to come home weighing in
- 26:11Speaker 3: the early forty kilograms, and when Eli Sharabi went into Gaza,
- 26:17Speaker 3: he was there for nearly five hundred days, so these
- 26:20Speaker 3: hostages have been in for six months longer. He weighed
- 26:23Speaker 3: seventy kilos when he went in. When he came out,
- 26:25Speaker 3: he was just forty four kilograms and it's been a
- 26:28Speaker 3: long process for him to regain his health after all
- 26:32Speaker 3: that time. The conditions we're just so horrendous, unhasting, and.
- 26:38Speaker 2: Just to give people a perspective of the sacrifice of
- 26:42Speaker 2: Israeli families. Nimrod Cohen, as you say, has been through
- 26:45Speaker 2: that hill. We've talked about his mother, Vicki and her husband.
- 26:49Speaker 6: Have been through that two years of hell.
- 26:51Speaker 2: While Nimrod was held as a hostage, his older brother
- 26:54Speaker 2: was serving in the Israeli Defense Force in the war.
- 26:58Speaker 2: Three months after he was taken hostage, his twin sister
- 27:02Speaker 2: was called up for her compulsory service in the Israel
- 27:06Speaker 2: Israeli Defense Forces. So while I had one son held hostage,
- 27:11Speaker 2: they had their other two children serving in this war.
- 27:14Speaker 6: And they were very matter of.
- 27:16Speaker 2: Fact about it.
- 27:17Speaker 6: They were very happy about that.
- 27:19Speaker 2: They said, that's what we do in our country, that's
- 27:22Speaker 2: how we support our country. Stay with Ushry because I
- 27:25Speaker 2: want to just go back to Jerusalem again, because I
- 27:28Speaker 2: believe that we've managed to get on the line. Our
- 27:30Speaker 2: good friend Gerald Steinberg, who's the professor of politics at
- 27:33Speaker 2: bar Ilan University, Great to talk to you again. Gerald.
- 27:37Speaker 2: We've talked about the highs and lows of this war
- 27:40Speaker 2: today is very much a high share. Let us share
- 27:44Speaker 2: it first, just in your observations, as in Israeli, what
- 27:49Speaker 2: you were thinking about, what are you seeing unfolding? What
- 27:52Speaker 2: is your sense of relief, joy or pride.
- 27:56Speaker 8: I think there's a lot of tension released, certainly a
- 27:59Speaker 8: lot of happiness at this particular moment, but also there's
- 28:03Speaker 8: still a great deal of anger.
- 28:06Speaker 1: This real brings us all back to two years ago.
- 28:09Speaker 8: It's very important to get the hostages back, the ones
- 28:12Speaker 8: that are living in also to vary. Unfortunately, the number
- 28:15Speaker 8: that died that were killed, they didn't die, they were
- 28:17Speaker 8: murdered by Ramas. And I started talking about you said,
- 28:21Speaker 8: two hundred and fifty hostages were taken on October seventh,
- 28:25Speaker 8: two years ago and held in the most horrible, inhuman,
- 28:29Speaker 8: barbaric conditions imaginable. They were sending videos to the families
- 28:33Speaker 8: to try to get the families to put pressure to
- 28:36Speaker 8: release all these Palestinian terrorists as the price. This is extremely,
- 28:41Speaker 8: extremely inhuman in the behavior of Ramas and it's many
- 28:45Speaker 8: many supporters. There's going to be more and more anger
- 28:48Speaker 8: after the joy. I think we're going to see more
- 28:50Speaker 8: anger at what's called the international community. And yes, including
- 28:54Speaker 8: the Prime Minister of Australia and some of the leaders
- 28:57Speaker 8: who did not do anything that Israeli sought the the
- 29:00Speaker 8: hostages released. Instead, they were busy appeasing what they called protesters,
- 29:05Speaker 8: mobs of pro Palestinian, anti Israeli and anti human people
- 29:10Speaker 8: who are doing these terrible attacks in Sydney, in Melbourne
- 29:13Speaker 8: and other places and around the world. So there's going
- 29:15Speaker 8: to be a different kind of Israel. It's going to
- 29:17Speaker 8: be Israel as a society is going to be much
- 29:20Speaker 8: more cautious, much more skeptical about the international community. But
- 29:25Speaker 8: then you compare that to President Trump. You talked about
- 29:27Speaker 8: Prime Minister in the Tan Yahoo and the heads of
- 29:30Speaker 8: the Israeli government, along with the Trump's people who helped
- 29:34Speaker 8: negotiate this release that's taking place, Steve Whitcoff in particular,
- 29:39Speaker 8: who was very active in all of this, and also
- 29:42Speaker 8: Jared Kushner, and they're waiting to receive President Trump. President
- 29:46Speaker 8: Trump made this possible. Israelis are exhausted. Thomas has been defeated.
- 29:51Speaker 8: But you needed President Trump, not these international.
- 29:54Speaker 1: Leaders, whether Kiir Starmer or Albanese or others making all
- 29:58Speaker 1: these statements about a Palestinian state.
- 30:00Speaker 8: It's so ridiculous that you needed President Trump to say,
- 30:03Speaker 8: this is the deal.
- 30:03Speaker 1: We're going to do it. We're going to get these
- 30:05Speaker 1: people released.
- 30:06Speaker 8: That's real statesmanship, that's real acting as a.
- 30:09Speaker 1: Human being towards other human beings.
- 30:11Speaker 8: And what we see on our screens all the Israeli
- 30:14Speaker 8: celebrating the fact that these hostages have been basically tortured
- 30:18Speaker 8: for so many for two years. For its over seven
- 30:20Speaker 8: hundred days. President Trump does get very much a vote
- 30:23Speaker 8: of thanks from the Israeli people for this.
- 30:25Speaker 2: And there are signs welcoming him into Israel. Donald Trump
- 30:31Speaker 2: is due to arrive in Israel in the next few minutes.
- 30:34Speaker 2: We'll bring that to you live. But there are signs,
- 30:36Speaker 2: there are billboards, there are chants, and there are placards
- 30:40Speaker 2: praising Donald Trump and welcoming him and thanking him. I'll
- 30:44Speaker 2: come back to you on the foreign policy implications in
- 30:48Speaker 2: just a moment, Gerald, but I just want to update
- 30:49Speaker 2: our viewers.
- 30:50Speaker 6: We showed earlier that.
- 30:52Speaker 2: Emotional footage of the hostage mother having FaceTime with one
- 30:57Speaker 2: of the hostages who's just about to be free. We
- 31:00Speaker 2: didn't get the Hebrew translation at the time, I've had
- 31:03Speaker 2: some kind viewers text me. They're saying that she was
- 31:05Speaker 2: saying I love you, and she was saying I love
- 31:08Speaker 2: you a lot. So that makes a lot of sense.
- 31:11Speaker 2: And thank you so much for sending in that translation,
- 31:13Speaker 2: Gerald Steinberg. The other question I was going to ask
- 31:18Speaker 2: you is critically, when you look at where to from here,
- 31:22Speaker 2: Obviously Israel is more physically secure now than it was
- 31:26Speaker 2: before October the seventh, So that's a big positive. But
- 31:31Speaker 2: the big unknown is how do you reconstruct Gaza? How
- 31:36Speaker 2: do you put it back in place in a way
- 31:38Speaker 2: that will not only be prosperous but peaceful keeping the
- 31:41Speaker 2: Islamist terrorists at bay your thoughts.
- 31:45Speaker 1: We don't know.
- 31:46Speaker 8: There are a lot of plans. There are points, number
- 31:49Speaker 8: of points in Trump's peace plan twenty points. Most of
- 31:53Speaker 8: them relate after the hospitals are released today after for instance,
- 31:57Speaker 8: dis army COMMASUS still has weapons. They've still been firing
- 32:01Speaker 8: rockets at Israel. They assembled thirty forty thousand rockets before
- 32:05Speaker 8: the war. They have not all been used or destroyed.
- 32:09Speaker 8: Who's going to make sure that those are not available
- 32:11Speaker 8: to hit Israel? To disarm Hummus from all the terrorist tunnels.
- 32:15Speaker 8: Those tunnels, some of them still exist. They have to
- 32:18Speaker 8: be located and blown up. Now we've heard talks about
- 32:20Speaker 8: various Arab forces coming in some sort of international force.
- 32:24Speaker 1: Israelis have learned that.
- 32:25Speaker 8: Nobody else cares, nobody else does make sure that these
- 32:30Speaker 8: weapons are not used to attack Israelis except Israeli soldiers.
- 32:33Speaker 8: So there's a lot of uncertainty in the future if
- 32:36Speaker 8: Trump is able to follow through, and if what's called
- 32:39Speaker 8: the international community these forces are successful, not like in
- 32:43Speaker 8: Lebanon where they were working with Isabella, not like an
- 32:46Speaker 8: in Iran where they overlook the continuing development of the
- 32:49Speaker 8: nuclear program. But taking this job seriously so Israel doesn't
- 32:53Speaker 8: have to do it. We don't have yet another round.
- 32:55Speaker 8: This is not just a war that's started on in
- 32:57Speaker 8: October seventh. It's been going on at least two thousand
- 33:00Speaker 8: and seven, when Kamas forcibly took over the Gaza strip.
- 33:04Speaker 1: That has to be an end has to.
- 33:06Speaker 8: Be put to that period of history, and there's a
- 33:09Speaker 8: lot of uncertainty and the rest of the region has
- 33:11Speaker 8: to change.
- 33:12Speaker 1: Israel did an amazing job.
- 33:14Speaker 8: Israeli government, the Israeli military in particular Iran was defeated
- 33:18Speaker 8: tisbala Is halfway through being disarmed.
- 33:21Speaker 1: They were defeated.
- 33:22Speaker 8: But the rest of the job has to be done
- 33:23Speaker 8: because we know in the history they've gone back and
- 33:25Speaker 8: rebuilt their capabilities, not just since nineteen since two thousand
- 33:30Speaker 8: and seven, but also going all the way back to
- 33:32Speaker 8: nineteen forty eight when the First War started to destroy Israel.
- 33:36Speaker 8: That's what people, that's what political leaders have to focus on.
- 33:40Speaker 8: How do you tell Palestinian society you're not going to
- 33:43Speaker 8: go back to nineteen forty eight, You're not going to
- 33:46Speaker 8: destroy Israel, whether it's Hamas, whether it's some form of
- 33:49Speaker 8: the PLO. We all remember, yesa Arafat, that was his
- 33:52Speaker 8: entire life, was destroying Israel. Thomas is another version of that.
- 33:56Speaker 8: So the diplomatic effort that has to be made, must
- 33:59Speaker 8: be sustained, must be serious, must take security seriously.
- 34:03Speaker 1: We also need to worry a lot.
- 34:05Speaker 8: About the reconstructions the United Nations facilities that have been
- 34:09Speaker 8: used and stolen by Hamas.
- 34:11Speaker 1: With the assistance of people within the United Nations. That
- 34:15Speaker 1: has to end.
- 34:16Speaker 8: Israelis have no faith whatsoever, no trust in United Nations entities.
- 34:21Speaker 2: It has to be the they have for every right
- 34:23Speaker 2: as a humanitarian. They have every right to have lost
- 34:27Speaker 2: that trust. Gerald, thanks so much for joining us. I
- 34:29Speaker 2: appreciate it on this momentous day. Thank you Gerald Steinberg,
- 34:32Speaker 2: who's a professor of politics at Bar Alan University, joining
- 34:35Speaker 2: us live there from Jerusalem.
- 34:37Speaker 6: If you've just.
- 34:37Speaker 2: Tuned in, what you're looking at now is live pictures
- 34:40Speaker 2: of Hostages Square in Tel Aviv, where hundreds of thousands
- 34:44Speaker 2: have gathered to celebrate the release of the last remaining
- 34:48Speaker 2: living hostages from Humas back to Israel. Seven have been
- 34:53Speaker 2: transported out of Gaza by the Red Cross back into
- 34:57Speaker 2: Israeli hands. The second group of Third Team, we believe
- 35:01Speaker 2: are on their way. They've been making contact with their
- 35:03Speaker 2: families via FaceTime and the like, so they are obviously
- 35:07Speaker 2: on their way. I've got more analysis about what's going
- 35:10Speaker 2: on in Israel and the implications back home in just
- 35:13Speaker 2: a moment. But I want to cross back to Scott
- 35:15Speaker 2: and News host Sarry Marxon first, because you've had some
- 35:17Speaker 2: breaking news for a shriff.
- 35:19Speaker 4: Yes, well, a few things now.
- 35:20Speaker 3: Firstly, Donald Trump is just two minutes away from landing
- 35:25Speaker 3: in Israel.
- 35:26Speaker 4: His Air Force one is two minutes out.
- 35:29Speaker 3: Secondly, I have had confirmation, Chris, that that second group
- 35:32Speaker 3: of thirteen hostages are not in the hands of IDF.
- 35:37Speaker 3: So this is some bizarre decision by Hamas to allow
- 35:43Speaker 3: those thirteen hostages to make contact with their family. So
- 35:47Speaker 3: those thirteen that we're seeing, including Nimrod Cohen, are not
- 35:51Speaker 3: back in Israel. They're not even with the Red Cross.
- 35:54Speaker 3: They're still in Hamas' captivity. Now, Chris, we do have
- 35:57Speaker 3: another image of o Hell. He's just twenty to twenty
- 36:03Speaker 3: four years old. Sorry, his family seeing footage of him
- 36:06Speaker 3: being released for the first time.
- 36:08Speaker 4: On Israeli television.
- 36:09Speaker 7: Will will bring that now, dog, my dog.
- 36:31Speaker 3: He's just so beautiful to watch the delight of Alan's
- 36:35Speaker 3: mother Now, she had no idea if he was alive
- 36:40Speaker 3: or dead until Elie Sharabi's release in February this year,
- 36:45Speaker 3: and he became so close to Alan in captivity. He
- 36:49Speaker 3: was like a father figure to him. So the moment
- 36:51Speaker 3: he got out, he made sure he spoke to Alan's
- 36:54Speaker 3: mother to say he's still alive. He's promised he's going
- 36:57Speaker 3: to hang on until his released. And you know, the
- 37:02Speaker 3: difficulty that our Lon oh Hell had in those tunnels
- 37:07Speaker 3: of Gaza can't be understated. He really was in such
- 37:10Speaker 3: a bad way mentally also his health and Ali Sharabi
- 37:15Speaker 3: kept him going.
- 37:16Speaker 4: But the joy on the mother's face.
- 37:18Speaker 2: So look, I said, Shari, I've got instant, instant viewer
- 37:23Speaker 2: translation from the hebrewy on that clip. Now she was saying, darling,
- 37:27Speaker 2: my darling, my gorgeous, Oh my god, oh my god,
- 37:30Speaker 2: oh my god. So we got that sense from the tone.
- 37:33Speaker 6: It was just brilliant.
- 37:34Speaker 2: You don't have to speak Hebrew to understand the joy
- 37:37Speaker 2: and interpret the sentiments. There's beautiful stuff. Sharry, stay with us.
- 37:42Speaker 2: You are watching the Kenny Report, Sky and Newses rolling
- 37:45Speaker 2: coverage of events unfolding in Israel. We will be seeing
- 37:49Speaker 2: President Donald Trump landing in Air Force one in the
- 37:52Speaker 2: next few minutes. There's ben Urian Airport, which lays on
- 37:56Speaker 2: the planes down below Jerusalem between Jerusalem and Aviv effectively,
- 38:01Speaker 2: and there is that is where the President will be
- 38:05Speaker 2: arriving and will bring those pictures to you live. I
- 38:09Speaker 2: want to just bring in as we wait for that.
- 38:11Speaker 2: Alex Rivchen, who is the co chair or the co
- 38:14Speaker 2: CEO of the Executive Council of Australian Jury, and Alex,
- 38:19Speaker 2: we've spoken to you throughout the last two years, through
- 38:24Speaker 2: very very difficult days. There is much pain and trauma ahead,
- 38:28Speaker 2: but this is a day to celebrate, Chris.
- 38:33Speaker 12: It's an incredible day, and it's a day when the
- 38:36Speaker 12: heart saws and the spirit saws, and you put aside
- 38:40Speaker 12: the trivial and the mundane, and all of the pain
- 38:43Speaker 12: and sorrow we felt over the last two years. It's
- 38:46Speaker 12: instantly washed away. It reminds me of reading the accounts
- 38:49Speaker 12: of some of the great Israelis, people like Amos Oz
- 38:52Speaker 12: and Moshe Dian, when they wrote about being little boys
- 38:55Speaker 12: when Israel was going to get a state in nineteen
- 38:58Speaker 12: forty seven, when the UN vote to give the Jewish
- 39:00Speaker 12: people a homeland for the first time in two thousand years,
- 39:03Speaker 12: and seeing their fathers weep for the first time, and
- 39:06Speaker 12: knowing in that moment that everything would be different. And
- 39:09Speaker 12: maybe it won't be different, Maybe that's delusion, Maybe more
- 39:12Speaker 12: war and heartbreak will follow, but in this moment, none
- 39:14Speaker 12: of that matters, and we're seeing something truly beautiful, which
- 39:17Speaker 12: is life snatched from the jaws of death, and that's
- 39:21Speaker 12: something we should all cherish.
- 39:24Speaker 2: I want to bring you back to the horrible debate
- 39:26Speaker 2: we've seen in this country, and I think the peace
- 39:28Speaker 2: plans and being put in place this weekend and the
- 39:32Speaker 2: response of that by the protests in Australia has been
- 39:36Speaker 2: incredibly illustrative. I want to show you what Josh Lees,
- 39:40Speaker 2: who heads up the Palestinian Action Group, said at a
- 39:43Speaker 2: protest in Sydney yesterday.
- 39:46Speaker 4: As long as Israel exists, a genocidal and apartheid regime,
- 39:50Speaker 4: there will not be peace for the Palestinian people.
- 39:54Speaker 2: Alex Richard, as long as Israel exists, there won't be peace.
- 39:58Speaker 2: So this exposes the game, doesn't it. This is the
- 40:01Speaker 2: quiet part they've said out loud. They're not interested in
- 40:04Speaker 2: Palestinian aspiration in a two state solution. They just want
- 40:09Speaker 2: to get rid of Israel.
- 40:12Speaker 12: These people are warmongers. They are angry now, angry than
- 40:16Speaker 12: when the war was on because they want the wa
- 40:19Speaker 12: to continue. The war goes on and allows them to
- 40:22Speaker 12: keep projecting images of Israeli crimes as they see it,
- 40:26Speaker 12: to keep demonizing the Israeli people. It's extraordinary that those
- 40:29Speaker 12: people who loud us claim that there was a genocide
- 40:33Speaker 12: are the ones who are now most vocally against the
- 40:35Speaker 12: cessation of the war. What does that tell you? It
- 40:37Speaker 12: tells you these people have no morals, that they've been
- 40:40Speaker 12: lying to the world for two years now, and they
- 40:42Speaker 12: stand condemned, and they should be ashamed of themselves. They
- 40:45Speaker 12: won't be ashamed, because these people are incapable of feeling shame.
- 40:49Speaker 12: But at least the rest of us can see now
- 40:51Speaker 12: clearly what these people are and the extent to which
- 40:53Speaker 12: they've deceived and lied and misrepresented who they are and
- 40:58Speaker 12: what they stand for. These are people who I hold
- 41:01Speaker 12: in the lowest regard, but at the moment, I'm not
- 41:03Speaker 12: thinking of them, to be honest, I'm thinking of the
- 41:05Speaker 12: people who made this glorious day possible. I'm thinking of
- 41:08Speaker 12: the heroes of the IDF who sacrificed over nine hundred
- 41:12Speaker 12: fell in battle so that others may live. I'm thinking
- 41:15Speaker 12: of the United States that harnessed all of its diplomatic
- 41:17Speaker 12: and economic power for the ultimate good, the saving human lives.
- 41:21Speaker 12: And I'm thinking of people like you, Chris, who for
- 41:24Speaker 12: two years have elevated the voice that the hostages have
- 41:27Speaker 12: humanized them, have told their stories, have worn pins in solidarity,
- 41:32Speaker 12: have written and spoken about them. And I'm truly grateful
- 41:35Speaker 12: to you, Chris, and all the people out there many
- 41:37Speaker 12: of your viewers and your colleagues who have stood with
- 41:40Speaker 12: us through this bleak and horrible time.
- 41:42Speaker 2: We will like us forget that Alex stay with us
- 41:44Speaker 2: if you can. Yes, our viewers have been staunch supporters
- 41:47Speaker 2: of the Israeli people, as I believe the silent majority
- 41:50Speaker 2: of all Australians have been. But what you're now seeing
- 41:53Speaker 2: on your screens is history in the making. This is
- 41:56Speaker 2: Air Force One about the touchdown in Ben Gurion Airport
- 41:59Speaker 2: in Israel. With President Donald Trump in his second term
- 42:04Speaker 2: as president, arriving to deliver peace in Gaza and forge
- 42:09Speaker 2: a new future in the Middle East. Not only has
- 42:12Speaker 2: he convinced Humas through pressure on the Arab world to
- 42:15Speaker 2: lay down his arms, he's convinced Israel to do the
- 42:18Speaker 2: same while Hummas still had control of the central part
- 42:22Speaker 2: of Gaza City. He is also pulled together a coalition
- 42:26Speaker 2: of nations to try to reconstruct and rebuild Gaza and
- 42:30Speaker 2: forge a new dawn in the Middle East. He will
- 42:33Speaker 2: fly later today to Charmeal Shaikh in Egypt to meet
- 42:38Speaker 2: with the leaders of more than twenty countries to start
- 42:41Speaker 2: working on his medium term plan to reconstruct Gaza and
- 42:46Speaker 2: solidify this piece many, many difficulties and hurdles to come,
- 42:51Speaker 2: but the diplomatic prospects are perhaps more prospective than they've
- 42:56Speaker 2: been in many decades. Former Australian Ambassador to Israe Dave
- 43:00Speaker 2: Sharma is with us. This is a momentous opportunity. I
- 43:04Speaker 2: don't want to be too dewey eyed here when it
- 43:07Speaker 2: comes to being too optimistic, Dave, but the prospects obviously
- 43:11Speaker 2: are there for a real change in direction.
- 43:15Speaker 11: I think there are, and I think there is course
- 43:17Speaker 11: for optimism, Chris. It's never pays to be too optimistic
- 43:20Speaker 11: or naive when it comes to the Middle East. But
- 43:22Speaker 11: I think what's changed fundamentally is the regional alignment of
- 43:25Speaker 11: forces because of this war. Since this war started, we've
- 43:29Speaker 11: seen Iran, which is the main backer of terror groups
- 43:32Speaker 11: in the region, humbled. It's nuclear programs set back several years,
- 43:37Speaker 11: possibly decades. We've seen the Asad Reshim toppled. We've seen
- 43:40Speaker 11: hesbler and a senior leadership decimated. We've seen the Hooties
- 43:44Speaker 11: take a beating, and so suddenly the forces that are
- 43:47Speaker 11: constructive in the region, the positive forces in the region,
- 43:50Speaker 11: modern forward looking Arab golf states and Israel know They're
- 43:55Speaker 11: the dominant grouping within the region now, people who want
- 43:58Speaker 11: to live side by side, get on trade, engage, be
- 44:02Speaker 11: part of the modern world. They are a majority now
- 44:05Speaker 11: in the Middle East, and that I think is why
- 44:07Speaker 11: we should be a little more hopeful than we have been.
- 44:10Speaker 2: Turkey is there, Pakistan is there, Indonesia is there. This
- 44:14Speaker 2: also but speaks a notion, I suppose, almost an ideology
- 44:23Speaker 2: to make sure that the whole world embraces this problem.
- 44:26Speaker 2: It's an issue for the Muslim world to fix, not
- 44:29Speaker 2: just for the Middle East.
- 44:31Speaker 11: Yeah, and I think look, Donald Trump was quite careful,
- 44:34Speaker 11: and you know he curated this meeting three weeks ago
- 44:37Speaker 11: now on the margins of the General Assembly and invited
- 44:40Speaker 11: leaders from all the major Islamic nation, not just those
- 44:43Speaker 11: in the Middle East. So the leader of Turkey, the
- 44:45Speaker 11: President of Indonesia, Prime Mister Pakistan and they were all
- 44:49Speaker 11: part of this conversation and he got them to buy
- 44:51Speaker 11: in to his vision. His plan is twenty point planned
- 44:54Speaker 11: for the Middle East, and we're seeing the fruits of
- 44:57Speaker 11: that today with the release of the hostages, and hopefully
- 45:00Speaker 11: we will see another harvest tomorrow when they gather in
- 45:02Speaker 11: Chunnel shake for this historic summer. There hasn't been there
- 45:06Speaker 11: won't have been a summer like this for probably twenty years.
- 45:09Speaker 11: I would say, you know, we're bringing in leaders of
- 45:12Speaker 11: this group of countries to discuss peace in the Middle East.
- 45:15Speaker 11: It's not just peace between Israel and Ghars, but a
- 45:18Speaker 11: broader piece in the Middle East. So I think we
- 45:20Speaker 11: have good reason to be at least positive and less
- 45:23Speaker 11: hopeful exactly. And it's another example of very smart diplosa
- 45:27Speaker 11: diplomacy from Donald Trump. He's trying to make use of
- 45:30Speaker 11: that momentum, huge momentum today with this peace plan and
- 45:34Speaker 11: the freeing of the hostages. But later in the day
- 45:36Speaker 11: our time, he'll be trying to make some use of
- 45:39Speaker 11: that in Egypt. Live pictures here.
- 45:42Speaker 2: Of Benjamin Netta, who on the tarmac waiting to welcome
- 45:46Speaker 2: President Trump and the first Lady as the Air Force
- 45:49Speaker 2: one there pulls up alongside the red carpet. I want
- 45:52Speaker 2: to bring in Sharry Marks and Sky News host who's
- 45:54Speaker 2: with us on the program tonight, to get her thoughts
- 45:57Speaker 2: here as Benjamin Nettna who and Donald Trump two of
- 45:59Speaker 2: the most hated figures in the world when it comes
- 46:02Speaker 2: to the left side of politics. But there can be
- 46:04Speaker 2: no escaping the facts here, Sherry. They are the ones
- 46:08Speaker 2: who have delivered not just this peace for today, but
- 46:11Speaker 2: a realistic, new opportunity for lasting peace.
- 46:16Speaker 3: Exactly the most realistic peace plan that has been put
- 46:19Speaker 3: on the table. And so, Chris, we're just looking at
- 46:22Speaker 3: this vision of Air Force one has arrived at Bengurian
- 46:27Speaker 3: Airport in Israel. President Donald Trump is moments away from disembarking.
- 46:32Speaker 3: He'll be accompanied by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defense
- 46:36Speaker 3: Secretary Pete Hegseth. There's a military parade there to greet him.
- 46:41Speaker 3: As you can see, the red carpet is literally being
- 46:44Speaker 3: rolled out as we speak.
- 46:45Speaker 4: This is an incredible moment.
- 46:48Speaker 3: Israeli's will be welcoming President Trump with open arms. He
- 46:54Speaker 3: is being celebrated in Israel as a peacetime leader. You
- 46:59Speaker 3: can see there that's Israeli President Isaac Hertzog standing at
- 47:03Speaker 3: the top of the red carpet. There Israeli Prime Minister
- 47:06Speaker 3: Benjamin Nett and Yahoo right beside him with their wives.
- 47:11Speaker 4: I understand. Jared Kushna there you go.
- 47:13Speaker 3: Jared Kushna and Ivanka Trump are there as well to
- 47:16Speaker 3: greet the president.
- 47:18Speaker 8: So this is a.
- 47:19Speaker 3: Remarkable occasion, Isaac Hertzog, Benjamin Nette and Yahoo. In the
- 47:23Speaker 3: next few minutes, we will be watching President Trump disembark
- 47:26Speaker 3: from Air Force One. What a historic day, Chris, What
- 47:29Speaker 3: a privilege it is for all of us to be
- 47:33Speaker 3: watching this. This will go down in history, the peace
- 47:36Speaker 3: deal that Trump struck in Egypt when he came to
- 47:41Speaker 3: see the release of the twenty living hostages.
- 47:45Speaker 2: There is no doubt about this moment. There is no
- 47:47Speaker 2: doubt that this is an historic day. I want to
- 47:50Speaker 2: get your thoughts on this, Alex Ritchin, because if this
- 47:55Speaker 2: was the summit of the achievement, that the war was
- 47:58Speaker 2: ended in Gaza and all the ostages were returned, it
- 48:01Speaker 2: would be a momentous day. But I want to get
- 48:03Speaker 2: your thoughts, Alex on just how this day can actually
- 48:07Speaker 2: be a new dawn, How it can actually be rather
- 48:09Speaker 2: than the end of this war, the start of a
- 48:12Speaker 2: rebuilding where Palestinians will embrace peace, where the Islamist extremists
- 48:17Speaker 2: might be kept at bay, and where the Arab countries
- 48:20Speaker 2: and the wealthy Muslim nations will invest in that future
- 48:24Speaker 2: rather than funding terrorist groups.
- 48:27Speaker 12: Well, there's such a moment of hope right now. And
- 48:30Speaker 12: also the scenes that are projecting now of Air Force
- 48:34Speaker 12: one on a time up there. It's such a poignant
- 48:37Speaker 12: symbol of US power and goodness and contribution to the world.
- 48:41Speaker 2: And when you have the US.
- 48:43Speaker 12: Putting all its capacity towards something like this, the world changes.
- 48:48Speaker 12: That's what the that's what a superpower can do. And
- 48:51Speaker 12: so the world is seen over the last two years
- 48:53Speaker 12: what comes from terrorism, from misery, from war, the deprivation
- 48:59Speaker 12: and the whole that stemmed from it. But they've also
- 49:02Speaker 12: seen what can come from a good fighting force and
- 49:05Speaker 12: deployed for benevolent means. And that's what we've seen here.
- 49:09Speaker 12: And so the Palestinians, I think will be contemplating now
- 49:12Speaker 12: was it all worth it? Were the horrors of the
- 49:14Speaker 12: last two years worth it? Was October seven worth it?
- 49:17Speaker 12: And hopefully this will now turn a page and we
- 49:20Speaker 12: will see in your era.
- 49:23Speaker 1: Will ensure Sorry.
- 49:24Speaker 2: Christiness, Sorry Alex Alex Richard from the Australian Council of Jury.
- 49:30Speaker 2: We've got Sharry Marks and Sky News host online. We're
- 49:33Speaker 2: staying with Dave Shamatu, former Australian ambassador to Israel and
- 49:37Speaker 2: now a Liberal Senator for New South Wales. Will come
- 49:40Speaker 2: back to them. But as we watch President Trump disembark
- 49:44Speaker 2: from Air Force One, and that reminder from Alex Ritchin
- 49:47Speaker 2: that no matter what you think of Benjamin Netanyahu or
- 49:50Speaker 2: Donald Trump, it is their strength, it is their use
- 49:53Speaker 2: of military and diplomatic power that has brought us to
- 49:57Speaker 2: this point. There is no mistaking that matter of what
- 50:00Speaker 2: the rest of the world and they can do with it.
- 50:03Speaker 2: From here, let's just listen to see whether there's any
- 50:06Speaker 2: sound anything we should be listening to on the tarmac
- 50:08Speaker 2: there at Bengurion Airport, Israel. Yes, a pregnant pause, you
- 50:31Speaker 2: might say, there, as they all await at the other
- 50:34Speaker 2: end of the red carpet for the President and the
- 50:36Speaker 2: first lady to come down. Apart from the Israeli Prime
- 50:39Speaker 2: Minister Benjamin Nettan and his wife there, of course, the
- 50:43Speaker 2: Israeli President Isaac Hertzog is there. They are political foes
- 50:48Speaker 2: from days gone by, but both of course committed to
- 50:51Speaker 2: the security of their country, the return of the hostages,
- 50:55Speaker 2: and ending this war that has gone on now for
- 50:57Speaker 2: seven hundred and more. Is you also saw there Avanka
- 51:02Speaker 2: Trump and her husband, who's been absolutely instrumental in the
- 51:08Speaker 2: diplomacy here. Let's have a listening now, Dar. It is
- 51:39Speaker 2: nine fifty two a m in Israel. So President Donald Trump,
- 51:44Speaker 2: when he's been met at the airport here, he will
- 51:47Speaker 2: go some thirty forty kilometers up the road to Jerusalem,
- 51:51Speaker 2: where he will address the Knesset. There will be a
- 51:54Speaker 2: meeting there with some hostage families. We don't know whether
- 51:57Speaker 2: they're hostage.
- 51:59Speaker 6: Is released today or earlier releases.
- 52:02Speaker 2: And not long after that he'll leave Israel and fly
- 52:05Speaker 2: direct to Egypt Chaml Shak for that meeting with about
- 52:08Speaker 2: with more than twenty world leaders to talk about the
- 52:10Speaker 2: next phase. Let's have a look now as the Israeli
- 52:13Speaker 2: group meets with the President at the.
- 52:16Speaker 6: Stairs, nah a military parade will and Shu.
- 53:14Speaker 2: Once they come down the stairs, Dave Charma, the former
- 53:16Speaker 2: ambassador to Israel, will be well aware of the protocols
- 53:19Speaker 2: to be followed here. Obviously the Prime Minister there, the President. Dave,
- 53:23Speaker 2: also Jared Kushner and Ivunka Trump, who have been there
- 53:26Speaker 2: and been involved in the behind the scenes diplomacy, explain
- 53:32Speaker 2: how much preparation would have gone into this because this
- 53:34Speaker 2: has been a snap visit. They wouldn't have even been
- 53:36Speaker 2: thinking about this a week ago.
- 53:38Speaker 11: No, look, to be honest, from where I can see,
- 53:40Speaker 11: it looks quite well organized given him out of time
- 53:42Speaker 11: and effort that's involved here rather or they're in protocol orders.
- 53:45Speaker 11: So you've got the Israeli president Isaac Kurtzog, who, as
- 53:48Speaker 11: you said, was the political rival of Nisana, who's he
- 53:52Speaker 11: contested an election against him as the leader of the
- 53:54Speaker 11: Labor Party in twenty fourteen. From memory, and his wife
- 53:58Speaker 11: Benjamin Nessina who Sarah Nash his wife. I imagine the
- 54:03Speaker 11: American ambassador that is there, Mike cut can be as well,
- 54:07Speaker 11: plus heads to protocol Jerry Kushner of UNCA Trump, it
- 54:12Speaker 11: looks like a yeah, I can see Mike cut Canbee
- 54:13Speaker 11: now too. So it looks like the normal sort of
- 54:16Speaker 11: receiving line you'd have for something like this. And of
- 54:18Speaker 11: course it looks like there's an IDF Guard of Honor
- 54:20Speaker 11: tur and I expect they'll play the national anthems soon
- 54:24Speaker 11: after President Trump descends from Air Force One.
- 54:27Speaker 2: Now, of course, whatever the President travels, the security is extraordinary.
- 54:32Speaker 2: Tell us about just how particularly careful they would be
- 54:36Speaker 2: flying into this part of the world, and presumably that
- 54:38Speaker 2: explains why it is such a lightning visit, not a
- 54:41Speaker 2: long time on the ground in either Israel or Egypt,
- 54:43Speaker 2: a few hours in each location, and then back to
- 54:46Speaker 2: the US. That would be driven largely by security concerns,
- 54:50Speaker 2: wouldn't it, rather than the president's diary.
- 54:53Speaker 11: Look, I think probably probably a bit of both. Of
- 54:56Speaker 11: the fact that the visits happening at short notice in
- 54:58Speaker 11: some respects helps US security situation because it means that
- 55:02Speaker 11: you know, this is not a program well known in
- 55:03Speaker 11: advanced and advertency.
- 55:05Speaker 2: The president at the top of the stairs. Now, Dave, continue,
- 55:08Speaker 2: but we'll watch the president y.
- 55:10Speaker 11: Yeah, of course, cut me off when you need. But look, obviously,
- 55:13Speaker 11: the US has a lot of assets in the region,
- 55:15Speaker 11: and I would have prepositioned a lot of assets, including
- 55:18Speaker 11: you know, armored vehicles, personnel, personal protective, secret service details, helicopters, contingencies, evacuations,
- 55:28Speaker 11: redundancies for all sorts of transports. So these are big
- 55:31Speaker 11: things to arrange. But they've got a lot of experience
- 55:34Speaker 11: in doing it, and they can turn these things on
- 55:36Speaker 11: at pretty short notice. And in the Middle East things
- 55:39Speaker 11: often happened at short notice and you need to be
- 55:41Speaker 11: able to move quickly. And that's what President Trump has
- 55:43Speaker 11: done today.
- 55:44Speaker 2: And there is there a president met by the president,
- 55:46Speaker 2: of course, would be the protocol. Isaac Herzog there meeting
- 55:49Speaker 2: President Donald Trump first, then his wife, the first Lady,
- 55:53Speaker 2: and presumably Benjaminta, who will be next in line. There
- 55:55Speaker 2: he is arm in arm. You saw that little fist
- 55:57Speaker 2: pump from Donald Trump at the top of the stack.
- 56:00Speaker 2: Islet's listening.
- 56:12Speaker 6: Hand no hand, no hand, no hand, you're blocking everyone familiar.
- 56:33Speaker 2: I've had some tough discussions and some friendly discussions with
- 56:36Speaker 2: each other over the years. I thought that fist pump
- 56:40Speaker 2: from the President was so typical of Donald Trump Alex
- 56:43Speaker 2: Rivchin as we saw him at the top of the stairs.
- 56:45Speaker 2: It's said at all, it was understated, but fist pump
- 56:48Speaker 2: for victory as he's coming down the stairs to meet
- 56:53Speaker 2: with the most important leader in the region and later
- 56:56Speaker 2: today with other leaders, knowing that there is so much
- 56:59Speaker 2: more to be done.
- 57:04Speaker 12: Well not he knows that he's the peacemaker of this time.
- 57:07Speaker 12: And as you said, Chris in Primesina Nowaho and President Trump,
- 57:11Speaker 12: you have two are the most maligned and marginalized in
- 57:15Speaker 12: some of God's political figures around the world. But they
- 57:17Speaker 12: are political survivors. They are canny, they are successful and
- 57:22Speaker 12: here They have done something which I think a few
- 57:24Speaker 12: people thought possible. They have found a way to get
- 57:27Speaker 12: all the hostages home. They have settled on a peace
- 57:30Speaker 12: which will God willing to see how mus disarm. They
- 57:33Speaker 12: have charted a new course for the entirety of the
- 57:35Speaker 12: Middle East, and they deserve absolute credit for him.
- 57:38Speaker 2: So we'll nearly out of time, so I forgot to
- 57:39Speaker 2: ask you briefly before we hand over this coverage to
- 57:42Speaker 2: Peter Credlin at six o'clock. I just want to get
- 57:44Speaker 2: a brief thought from you about how much hope you
- 57:48Speaker 2: have for the anti Semitism and the social division in
- 57:52Speaker 2: this country subsiding. Because the war is over.
- 57:56Speaker 12: It won't simply evaporated, won't subside. And we've seen from
- 57:59Speaker 12: the testers that we spoke about earlier in the show,
- 58:02Speaker 12: the extremists, they're still at it. They're not going to desist.
- 58:04Speaker 12: They feel ascendant, they feel like they've formed a movement.
- 58:07Speaker 12: But looking at these scenes, this gives us greater strength
- 58:11Speaker 12: and courage to fight. If peace can come from the
- 58:14Speaker 12: clutches of the horrible war like this, then anything we
- 58:18Speaker 12: face here domestically, I think we can overcome. And there
- 58:21Speaker 12: are good people in this country. There are many who
