- 0:04Today's July 1st, Faithful Today.
- 0:07The stone, progress is not about perfection.
- 0:10It is about doing what is right today and trusting that it is enough.
- 0:15Ripple One Practical.
- 0:17Today I will focus on doing my best and what is in front of me.
- 0:21I will not be overwhelmed by everything left undone.
- 0:24Faithfulness and small daily actions build a meaningful life over time.
- 0:30The Father is at work in my life, shaping me with care and purpose.
- 0:34As I follow Christ, the Holy Spirit forms me step by step.
- 0:39I do not need to see the finished result.
- 0:42I need to trust the one who is shaping me.
- 0:45Today's faithfulness is part of a greater work.
- 0:49But, you know, it says progress is not about perfection.
- 0:52And, man, you know, I'm going to kind of go on a little rant, but that's okay.
- 0:57On page 60, it says, we claim spiritual progress rather than spiritual perfection.
- 1:05Man, and I've heard a lot of things in different rooms of people being like, well, you know, I'm an alcoholic, so progress over perfection.
- 1:15And go on screwing up, screwing over people and being, you know, havocs to people in their life.
- 1:22And, you know, I say people and that was me at one time in my life.
- 1:27But, you know, I think, you know, we claim spiritual progress rather than spiritual perfection because this work is spiritual.
- 1:34And, yeah, you know, I'm not going to be perfect.
- 1:37But, you know, just because I am, you know, I have a problem when I drink and I have a problem when I drink too much, you know, oh, my goodness, I don't want to go against anybody's thoughts or opinions.
- 1:48But, you know, I don't agree that because I was, you know, I got a problem drinking when I drink too much or after a sort of point of time after that, that gives me a right to hurt other people.
- 2:03Or that gives me a checkmark to say, oh, well, you know, I'm an alcoholic.
- 2:07This is why I do it.
- 2:09But I'll make amends.
- 2:10You know, that's not how this works.
- 2:13You know, like, you know, man, I don't think it's right.
- 2:17Because, you know, I'm not blaming anybody anymore.
- 2:20You know, I've been the problem my whole life.
- 2:23And when I go through this work, you know, it's just crazy.
- 2:26Because when I go through this work, it says, so our troubles we think are basically of our own making.
- 2:30That's a lot simpler than making it everybody else's problem.
- 2:34And blaming it on a fact of the matter that when I drink, I want more.
- 2:40And a spiritual thing, because there's literal, there's work to be done.
- 2:45And, you know, my sponsor talks to me a lot about, you know, where I practice this.
- 2:50And I talk to other dudes about this, where I practice this.
- 2:53This is my home first, my occupation and my affairs in that order.
- 3:00You know, my significant other goes and does something every Tuesday night and then, you know, does other things, you know, through the week.
- 3:08And I have little bits and times that I get to have that I get to do this.
- 3:12I get to work with others.
- 3:13I get to go to the here gym.
- 3:15And I'm so grateful for that, that I'm allowed.
- 3:20Well, you know, when people ask me if I can do something, I'm like, hey, I got to talk to my manager first.
- 3:24But, you know, because I need to be there for them.
- 3:28That's my primary thing.
- 3:30And I don't get to treat her badly because, you know, I have a spiritual malady.
- 3:36Because I have steps in order to get me through that spiritual malady and steps.
- 3:41And if I'm not doing those steps and I'm just blaming it on this, man, and throwing out progress over perfection, I do not agree with that.
- 3:50You know, but it says in the Ripple One Practical, today I'll focus on doing my best.
- 3:57What is in front of me all?
- 3:57I will not be overwhelmed by everything left undone.
- 4:03And so I used to do this practice, and I probably should start doing it again.
- 4:10On page 86, there's some things that it tells me to do at night because it says when we retire at night, we constructively review our day.
- 4:21And it tells me all the things to look at.
- 4:24And I used to do this and, you know, because like one of the things it tells me to do is what we could pack into the stream of life.
- 4:35That's one of the questions.
- 4:36What could I have packed into the stream of life?
- 4:38And there's some other things in there.
- 4:39And I'll be like, man, I could have done more.
- 4:43I could have done more.
- 4:46But it's important the next sentence after that, it says,
- 4:49we must be careful not to drift into remorse or morbid reflection,
- 4:55because that would diminish our usefulness to others.
- 4:58Because if I'm all in my feelings and all upset,
- 5:01I'm not going to be of use to my family.
- 5:03I'm not going to be of use at work.
- 5:05I'm not going to be used to the people that I can serve.
- 5:09The people I can serve is with this book and with this message.
- 5:13And, but I found, you know, I really like Colossians 3, 23 through 4.
- 5:24And Colossians 3, 23 says,
- 5:27Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men,
- 5:33since you know that all you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward.
- 5:39It is the Lord Christ you are serving.
- 5:41Anyone who does wrong will be repaid for his wrong, and there is no favoritism.
- 5:47You know, that's kind of, that's deep.
- 5:52But you know, when I read this, whatever you do, work at it with all your heart as working for the Lord,
- 5:59and I was talking to my son the other day
- 6:01and I was like, you know, man, we're all God's kids.
- 6:05You, your mom, me, other people in your life
- 6:09are all God's kids.
- 6:11So we want to treat each other equally
- 6:13on that standpoint and with love.
- 6:16Not, you know, and I'm not saying
- 6:18he's not treating other kids good, bad,
- 6:20but I'm saying like, if I look at it in that manner
- 6:23and like, even like, you know, my home,
- 6:26Play my occupation, right?
- 6:28There'll be times that I'm like, man.
- 6:30And, you know, I'm not working in that occupation just to take their money.
- 6:36I mean, you know, I like the paycheck.
- 6:38But, you know, I need to treat everybody as God's kids as well, even the owner, even the
- 6:42dudes I work with.
- 6:45And have, you know, have some, I guess, you know, some quality of work as well and care
- 6:51about what I'm doing.
- 6:52Because I think, you know, when I look at it in that standpoint, and we're all God's kids, you know, it makes me look at life a little differently.
- 7:02And then the last part, it says, anyone who does wrong will be repaid for his wrong, and there's no favoritism.
- 7:09And that's like a, that's a little bit of a, it's like almost a, yeah, that's a promise too.
- 7:16It looks like, I mean, if it was, if there was a promise in the Bible, I would imagine that's a promise.
- 7:23And then in the Ripple thing, it says,
- 7:25the Father is at work in my life, shaping with care and purpose.
- 7:31And, you know, when I read that, it took me to page 77 when I was thinking about it,
- 7:36because our real purpose is to fit ourselves to be a maximum of service to God and the people about us.
- 7:42And so when I go to there and I think about, so, and this might be a little bit much,
- 7:49And, you know, if you're tired of me reading about literature, that's the only thing I know.
- 7:53So that's okay.
- 7:56But so when I think about how that works, and me and my sponsor were talking about this the other day, because on page 75, it tells me, and this is a fifth step promise.
- 8:11It tells me the feeling that the drink problem has disappeared will often come strongly.
- 8:18we feel we are on the broad highway,
- 8:21walking hand in hand with the spirit of the universe.
- 8:24And also above that,
- 8:25but now we begin to have a spiritual experience.
- 8:27So I'm beginning to have a spiritual experience
- 8:29on page 75 after the fifth step.
- 8:31I think that's an important part of this whole piece.
- 8:35And that's a big promise too for someone like me
- 8:38that the drink problem has disappeared.
- 8:40That's crazy because that's why I came
- 8:42into the rooms I came into
- 8:44because I couldn't stop drinking
- 8:46because I couldn't stop hurting people.
- 8:48And that's an important promise, right?
- 8:50Because that's the whole reason I'm here.
- 8:52So to me, and I couldn't see this probably
- 8:55because I couldn't see when I couldn't see anyways,
- 8:59but like that means I need to get to step five, right?
- 9:02That means I need to get through this work.
- 9:05And so when I think about that,
- 9:08and I think about what's on page 76,
- 9:10and we were talking about this and it says,
- 9:14Can he now take them all?
- 9:15It's all about the things that are objectionable.
- 9:18And I think you can sum up the objectionable things by my selfishness, my dishonesty, my
- 9:24resentments, and my fears.
- 9:28Can he now take them all?
- 9:29Everyone, if we still cling to something, we will not let go.
- 9:32We ask God to help us be willing.
- 9:35Well, in the 12 and 12, on page 64, and this is on step six.
- 9:43So this is coming out of step five into step six.
- 9:46And this clarifies what we're doing as well.
- 9:50It says, having been granted a perfect release from alcoholism.
- 9:54And that's what I was doing there, right?
- 9:57Why then should we be able to achieve by the same means a perfect release from every other
- 10:04difficulty or defect?
- 10:07So when I look at that and I think I'll be willing, and then the ripple says, shaping
- 10:12me with care and purpose.
- 10:13Well, you know, that's crazy because the seven-step prayer says, my creator.
- 10:19And I think about how, and I heard this, so this is not our original thought.
- 10:23My creator.
- 10:24So, like, my creator, because he's recreating my life.
- 10:28I'm now willing that you should have all of me, good and bad.
- 10:31Because, man, you know, the way I was explaining it, I'm going to have to explain this now, and I'm sorry.
- 10:35But good and bad, because when I came in, I thought my biggest defect was because I drank.
- 10:41and that has become my biggest asset to help another dude that is broken as I was.
- 10:47So, and then, you know, so it goes good and bad.
- 10:50I pray that you remove from me every single defect of character
- 10:54which stands in the way of my usefulness to you and my fellows.
- 10:57Not so I can make, you know, and I think this is the best representation.
- 11:01Not so I can make this, you know, because I got to imagine like a video game, right?
- 11:05And I'm making a character on this video game.
- 11:07Well, I'm able to put the stats in there.
- 11:09Like I want to be a little bit humble.
- 11:11I want to be a little bit honest.
- 11:13I want to look like this.
- 11:14No, it's not for me to do that.
- 11:16That's God's job.
- 11:18Because I don't know what I'm supposed to do anyways.
- 11:20And that's a God thing.
- 11:22So when I hear today, oh, I'm just working on my character defects.
- 11:27Well, on page 62, it says, neither could we reduce our self-centeredness by wishing or trying on our own power.
- 11:35We had to have God's help.
- 11:37So that's crazy for me to be working on my defects or working on a resentment or working on this stuff.
- 11:43God's doing it.
- 11:44And that's a huge piece of this, right?
- 11:48So it says, characters, we're saying the way my usefulness to you and my fellows,
- 11:51grant me strength as I go out here to do your bidding.
- 11:55So doing your bidding.
- 11:56Man, I say the seven-step prayer on my knees every morning because to me what it means.
- 12:01And this is truth for me today.
- 12:03And I think truth is interesting because, so truth can be something at different points
- 12:10because truth moves around or some things do.
- 12:13So truth, you know, at one point was flat earth.
- 12:16Today, the truth is not flat earth.
- 12:19So truth has changed.
- 12:22So to me today, what truth is and what this means to me is grant me strength as I go out
- 12:28here to do your bidding.
- 12:31So the bidding is, that's the seventh step prayer.
- 12:34and then the next words
- 12:36says we have completed step seven.
- 12:38Now we need more action
- 12:39without which we find
- 12:40that faith without works is dead.
- 12:42All right, so I know
- 12:43I'm getting in a rant now,
- 12:44but that's okay
- 12:45because if you're headed to work
- 12:46or doing something,
- 12:47just listening,
- 12:48this is cool stuff.
- 12:49So faith without works is dead
- 12:51is on this page
- 12:53and this is talking about amends.
- 12:55Writing our amends,
- 12:56step eight and nine
- 12:58and doing amends.
- 12:59So that says faith without works is dead
- 13:02on this page
- 13:02And so on page 88, it says going into chapter working with others.
- 13:07So faith without works is also working with others.
- 13:11And then if we rewind to page 14 and 15, it says faith without works is dead as well.
- 13:18And that isn't talking about self-sacrifice and helping others.
- 13:22So I think it's an interesting thing because that, to me, kind of talks about the work.
- 13:27And then it goes to say, let's look at steps eight and nine.
- 13:30So we're looking at that, and then on page, so I think this connection is cool, though, because from 75, it says we begin to have a spiritual experience, to 79.
- 13:4379 tells me, although these reparations take innumerable forms, it's talking about amends.
- 13:51There are some good general principles which we find guiding.
- 13:55And this is where it tells reminding ourselves that we have decided to go to any length to find a spiritual experience.
- 14:02And I wonder if they're talking about a spiritual experience is through the amends.
- 14:07So that's crazy because like, you know, so 75 through 79, amends.
- 14:13And faith without works is dead, is the work.
- 14:16So we got 8, 9, 12.
- 14:17I mean, I would even argue, because it says on page 84, we've vigorously commenced this way of living as we cleaned up the past, right?
- 14:25And then on page 66, I think, yeah, it says,
- 14:31But with the alcoholic, whose hope is the maintenance and growth of a spiritual experience, this business of resentment is infinitely raised.
- 14:40Well, I think that in the business of not just resentment, I think there's more than that, because on page 145, it tells me the greatest enemies of an alcoholic are resentment, jealousy, envy, frustration, and fear.
- 14:56I think I can put that back into selfishness, this honesty, resentment, and fear.
- 15:01But I think all that's really cool because when I go through this work, God forms me step-by-step.
- 15:10Just how this ripple says, I do not need to see the finished result.
- 15:13I don't.
- 15:14Because, man, at this point in my life, I'm trusting and relying on God.
- 15:19My life is something that I can never explain.
- 15:23And then it goes, today's faithfulness is a part of a greater work.
- 15:27And, you know, I, yeah, man, that's, it's a cool deal being able to talk about this literature in a way that, well, that makes sense to, I mean, I hope, I don't know if it makes sense to other people, but it kind of aligns in a way in my head.
- 15:47And maybe there's other people that think it aligns with them too.
- 15:51You know, I hope it does.
- 15:52And, you know, if anybody ever wants to talk about this, we do have like an email.
- 15:57And, you know, I think I love talking about the literature.
- 16:00I found a lot of hope.
- 16:04I see what to do in here.
- 16:07You know, on page 29, it says,
- 16:09Further on, clear-cut directions are given to show us how we were covered.
- 16:14The word recovered in this book is in there 27 times.
- 16:19I think attitudes is in there 24.
- 16:22And that means it's pretty important.
- 16:24Anyways, I'm going to end it with this.
- 16:26This paragraph is pretty important,
- 16:28especially talking about the literature.
- 16:30It says, we in our turn sought the same escape
- 16:33with all the desperation of drowning men.
- 16:36What seemed at first a flimsy reed
- 16:38has proved to be the loving and powerful hand of God.
- 16:42A new life has been given us,
- 16:43or if you prefer a design for living that really works.
- 16:48Thank you, God, and I'll end this with a prayer.
- 16:50Father, help me be faithful in this day.
- 16:53Through your Spirit, guide my actions and shape my life
- 16:56according to your purpose, through your Son.
- 16:59Amen.
- 17:04Thank you, God, for letting me rant, talk, and giving me the opportunity.
- 17:09Like I said, man, I don't want to come off on like a spiritual high place.
- 17:13I'm just trying to, you know, I think carrying this message, which this message is to me in this book and this literature.
- 17:20And I'd like to, you know, help people that are interested in that.
- 17:24So thank you again.
- 17:25Have a good day.
