Transcript
- 0:00Hello there. It's time for most.
- 0:02Things Kenobi. Shouldn't.
- 0:04It be all things Kenobi. Hi everyone.
- 0:21Welcome to another episode of Most Things Kenobi, a podcast
- 0:24about Obi Wan Kenobi and all things Star Wars.
- 0:26I'm your host, Lauren. And I'm your host, Leanne.
- 0:31Well, this week we are diving into a really fun subject.
- 0:35Dude, I am ready to go. I have stuff to say.
- 0:38Yay. OK, great.
- 0:39I love it when podcasters have things to say.
- 0:45No, I'm ready to. I am.
- 0:46I'm. I'm also excited to talk about
- 0:48what we're going to talk about. Yeah, it's about the Jedi taking
- 0:53children when they're very young.
- 0:56But before we get into that, we wanted to do a Patreon shout out
- 0:59'cause we haven't done one for a little while and we just want to
- 1:03shout out our friend Hugh. Who is Hugh?
- 1:06He's just fucking awesome. He's an amazing person, really.
- 1:12He's been such a good friend to us.
- 1:14And yeah, just Hugh is special. So thank you, Hugh, for
- 1:19everything. We love you.
- 1:21We're so grateful that you're part of our little MTK family.
- 1:25Yes, honestly. And thank you for the the DMS
- 1:29about my cat passing. Those were really kind and
- 1:33unexpectedly wonderful. So thank, thank you for your
- 1:37friendship and your and your involvement in the most things
- 1:41Kenobi fam. Yeah, he's great for memes, and
- 1:44he's also great for emotional support.
- 1:47I skipped right over the memes and went for the emotionals, but
- 1:50I'm always here for the memes. Yeah, Hugh does it all so.
- 1:55There's not a thing Hugh can't do.
- 1:59What can you do for you? Maybe he doesn't want me asking
- 2:04that. Yeah, he's probably like please
- 2:06don't, please don't. I'm good.
- 2:08I can't take care of anyone else.
- 2:11We just think you're awesome. Yes, thank you.
- 2:16On to the children. Yes, except we're not stealing
- 2:24any at the tender age of a few. Months.
- 2:27Yeah. This was kind of your idea to
- 2:30talk about this so well. I've been wanting to it's a
- 2:34subject and not only that, with us re watching the Kenobi series
- 2:39during our Patreon watch parties, it's made me think a
- 2:42lot, especially especially when you get to the moments where you
- 2:47know the pyramid where the the sister and brothers are the the
- 2:52the. Oh, the Inquisitor.
- 2:54Inquisitor. Whatever.
- 2:55Yeah, so down in the basement, they've got some floating and
- 2:59yeah, you know, whatever that is preserved in goo.
- 3:03And there's a child, there's a youngling in there.
- 3:05And it's just like, it makes me think all over again, like, how
- 3:09did any of this start? And Kenobi himself tells little
- 3:12Leia, Like, I kind of, I may have had a brother.
- 3:16I remember my mother's shawl. It makes me think about it all
- 3:19over again. And it makes me angry all over
- 3:22again. Well, it makes me question.
- 3:26I have questions and you have things to say.
- 3:28So those two things usually go together, Questions and
- 3:33statements. It's true, it's true.
- 3:34What questions do you have? Well what the hell that's the
- 3:39first one. But whenever I think of this I
- 3:44think back to the original like the the first 3 movies episodes
- 3:491-2 and three where we have original Anakin like before
- 3:54Vader. Yeah.
- 3:56And they the whole conversation comes up when he's when Qui Gon
- 4:01brings him forward and and I think it's Yoda that says like
- 4:03he's too old. Oh, it's Mesa Windu, Yeah.
- 4:06Mace Windu? Well, of course.
- 4:08Mace Windu Yoda says Luke is too old.
- 4:10OK, well, the point stands. Yeah, he's a young boy.
- 4:17Luke is a grown boy, and they're too old.
- 4:21It's crazy. So my main question is, what are
- 4:27they hoping to accomplish? Are they successful and is it a
- 4:32way to circumvent brainwashing? Yeah, all of these questions.
- 4:39Like if you get them early, you don't have to change their mind,
- 4:42you know? Yeah, I know this really borders
- 4:46on indoctrination. Religion.
- 4:49Yes, yeah. I mean, there's religious
- 4:51indoctrination, there's ideological indoctrination, and
- 4:55indoctrination used to mean education, but it that that
- 4:58definition changed after World War One to mean propaganda.
- 5:04It has like a negative connotation.
- 5:06And one of the things that separates education from
- 5:11indoctrination is those who are indoctrinated are not allowed to
- 5:15question the doctrine that they're taught, right?
- 5:20I did a little research about it and for the most part the Jedi
- 5:23do not encourage questioning their methods.
- 5:27Well, yeah, because whenever someone would question, you'd be
- 5:31like you, you shouldn't be asking that.
- 5:33Yeah. Not like explaining anything.
- 5:36The Council has spoken and you must obey the Council like.
- 5:40Right. Yeah.
- 5:41So that in that sense they say they don't use brainwashing
- 5:46techniques. Well, they don't have to because
- 5:49they get them so young. Exactly.
- 5:52They they raise them in the code at such a young age that they
- 5:58don't know anything else. Experience comes from perhaps
- 6:02going out on to battles like Ahsoka.
- 6:05A lot of questions come up, and even Anakin.
- 6:07Yeah, I'm sure the older Jedi had questions.
- 6:10Qui Gon, that is probably more unheard of.
- 6:13The older you get in the Jedi Council, or at least, you know,
- 6:18in the ranks of being a Jedi, the more unheard of it is to
- 6:22even ask a question. And probably why they were all
- 6:26aghast that Qui Gon brought Anakin forward.
- 6:29How can you ask this of us? He's already too damn old.
- 6:33And I feel like they were trying to explain this with Acolyte but
- 6:38now there's no season 2 so we'll never get the actual exploration
- 6:42that they're working towards. Because I I think there was
- 6:45something about those twin sisters who, forgive me, I've
- 6:48completely forgotten the characters names at this point.
- 6:51Can't even remember what happened yesterday so no way I'm
- 6:56going to remember their names. I think they were trying to show
- 7:00that those girls were brought in for training and that whole
- 7:04setup of how they came in to that independent culture of
- 7:09witches or whatever those women were.
- 7:12That culture was in Acolyte and the Jedi just assumed they
- 7:15should control other people's use of the force and take those
- 7:20children if they're force sensitive.
- 7:22Most of the time in Star Wars Canon, parents have to agree to
- 7:28let their children be taken by the Jedi, and though the mother
- 7:32did eventually kind of agree, I guess the Jedi were really
- 7:38pushing to take those children, whether or not the children or
- 7:41the parents wanted them to go. So that sets my teeth on it.
- 7:46I thought that there was a moment there were the mother.
- 7:49The mother witch wanted the individual to have a choice,
- 7:53right? Have a say in it, which I don't
- 7:57think that if you take a child like the Jedi do, you're not.
- 8:01There is no choice. Now if you follow the Acolyte as
- 8:04well, you can also choose to leave, correct?
- 8:08Or was she kicked out? The one, the one twin.
- 8:11I don't remember. I can't remember either I.
- 8:14Think she left because they I have seen this implied that the
- 8:18Jedi can leave. They can choose to leave, It's
- 8:20not like they're being held against their will.
- 8:22As Jedi, but you're less likely to leave if that's all you've
- 8:27ever known. And plus, I think the Jedi want
- 8:33to take them young as young as possible because the desire or
- 8:40the need for a parental role is then transferred.
- 8:44You don't really know your parents and you're already
- 8:46starting this child on the path of no attachments.
- 8:51Yeah. Because the original attachment
- 8:53that a a baby needs to be raised, you know, whole are two
- 9:00loving parents, if not 2, at least one to care for because a
- 9:05baby is unable to do so. And that attachment is
- 9:10completely severed long before they even form any kind of bond
- 9:15where they're aware of it, you know?
- 9:16Yeah. Yeah, it's interesting when you
- 9:20think about it in terms of just like the hierarchy of needs, you
- 9:24know? Yeah, yes.
- 9:25And so you, you've got, you need, I think the rich, like
- 9:29the, the foundational part of the hierarchy is you need safety
- 9:33and you need shelter, you need food.
- 9:36You know those basics. But then there needs to be an
- 9:38emotional level at some point. And if the Jedi are all about no
- 9:43attachment, how do you raise a child with compassion if they
- 9:48never feel an emotional bond? They must still feel emotional
- 9:53bonds. But the adults is probably the
- 9:56one trying to like maintain a level of non attachment, whereas
- 9:59a child can't help that at all. Agreed.
- 10:03It makes me question whether that's complete, utter fiction.
- 10:08You know, it's just Star Wars, not really possible in real life
- 10:14to to raise a child without attachment.
- 10:17That seems not possible to me. But I don't know think of it.
- 10:22From a Buddhist standpoint, they also are pretty detached from
- 10:26things. But they're not detached from
- 10:30nature, from respect. Respecting others, respecting
- 10:35nature, loving someone. Yeah.
- 10:38Yeah, there's love, there's familial bonds.
- 10:41Those all still exist. So it.
- 10:43But they teach acceptance of loss.
- 10:46So if you lose any of those things, they teach that there's
- 10:50acceptance in that because everything fades, everything
- 10:52passes. It's part of the the process.
- 10:55Letting go is part and parcel with, you know, cherishing
- 10:58something. It's way more balanced.
- 11:01So yeah, again, I find that the extreme Jedi are too extreme.
- 11:08Like it was too extreme. It was so extreme because
- 11:14they're taking these four sensitive individuals, they're
- 11:18raising them, OK? For the most part it works out
- 11:21until you get a few like Anakin or the one in Acolyte, you know,
- 11:26etcetera, etcetera. Yeah.
- 11:28Then what do you do? What went wrong?
- 11:31What part didn't they focus on? Or is it just the human nature
- 11:34that you're not going to be able to cage all of them?
- 11:36Well, like to assume it's related to age.
- 11:39Yeah, that's it's, I don't think it is related to age because
- 11:43Luke Yoda was wrong. Yeah.
- 11:45He was one of the most balanced Jedi.
- 11:50Right. But Luke was able to comprehend
- 11:53balance. Luke was able to see the
- 11:55difference between right and wrong, good and evil.
- 11:58They're still good. An invader.
- 12:00You know, I'm going to go in here and try to help.
- 12:03And if I can't, he had the acceptance of it.
- 12:06He loved his father. He tried to help him.
- 12:08It worked. You know, not everyone's going
- 12:11to win that battle. But that doesn't make him less
- 12:13of a human because he was attached to his father.
- 12:16Yeah. Or attached to the idea that he
- 12:19could the good in his father could come back.
- 12:22I don't know. There's two sides to this
- 12:24argument, right? So it's which is the more
- 12:27effective method? To take someone young and force
- 12:31feed them your doctrine, or to take a person who is developed
- 12:36and has a pliable mind and an open mind and let them choose
- 12:40that path because they chose it for themselves?
- 12:43Is that not a more powerful dedication?
- 12:47Until you get someone who wants to join because they want
- 12:51revenge, and then we're dipping into the Sith like I want to be
- 12:55a trained Jedi so I can exact revenge on, let's say, the
- 12:59slavers. In Anakin's case, which is it
- 13:03ended up happening anyway, killed all those people because
- 13:07his mom, but Anakin didn't go into it.
- 13:11He wanted to be a Jedi. He wanted to, he followed Qui
- 13:13Gon and said he wanted to do this.
- 13:15And he's just a little boy that wanted out of out of town, you
- 13:18know, he wanted to see the world, so to speak.
- 13:20Right. And which of us, at age 9, would
- 13:23make a good choice for ourselves for the rest of our lives?
- 13:27Zero. That's why we depend on the.
- 13:29That's why we depend on parents and guardians.
- 13:32Like everybody would be a paleontologist then because
- 13:36everyone's obsessed with dinosaurs when they're 9.
- 13:38Marine biologist, Girl. Marine biologist.
- 13:44I get it. Yeah, totally.
- 13:47OK, but I'm going to play devil's advocate for a second.
- 13:50Let's go and. Then I'm going to play devil's
- 13:52advocate to my devil's advocates.
- 13:54I love this, let's go. All right, some of us are really
- 13:58opposed to religious indoctrination because we've had
- 14:01bad experiences, right, with religious organizations, right?
- 14:05But who has not experienced this in one form or another?
- 14:09Our parents or whoever is taking care of us.
- 14:13And they're going to have a set of ideals and they're going to
- 14:15start to teach you those from the minute you can start
- 14:19comprehending. Is that, is that any different
- 14:22than what the Jedi are doing? No, like there's plenty of
- 14:25people who are raised Catholic, who are raised Christian or any
- 14:30religion. It doesn't matter.
- 14:31And you are started at a very early age.
- 14:34Even if you're not being taught right out of the religious
- 14:38texts, you're being taught a certain kind of morality or a
- 14:41way that you live your life. So we can get our hackles up
- 14:45really fast at this idea, but the truth is we have all been
- 14:49treated this way. 100% you're right.
- 14:53You're right. O If a parent chooses this for
- 14:57their child and they want them to be raised as a Jedi, that is
- 15:01no different than any other choice.
- 15:05Theoretically. It's a very extreme choice in my
- 15:08opinion. Yeah, but.
- 15:10I mean, it's still like whether they're, if they're choosing not
- 15:14to, that's still the same kind of indoctrination that they are
- 15:17opposed to giving their child away to the Jedi.
- 15:20That's their own form of indoctrination, ideological
- 15:23indoctrination or education. Because it with good parents,
- 15:28there comes a time where you can question things to your parents
- 15:31and they'll allow you to start to question things and find your
- 15:34own path. Theoretically and keep healthy.
- 15:37Yeah, yeah. Guide you, you know.
- 15:40Give you a foundation and then you pick your own future, right?
- 15:43Yeah, yeah. So in that sense, I was when I
- 15:47was researching all this, it's like, OK, well, I don't want to
- 15:49be too hard on it because yeah, who hasn't been?
- 15:52And honestly, in the grand scheme of things, the Jedi are
- 15:56good. What they do is for the
- 16:00betterment of the Galaxy. What they strive to teach is
- 16:04good in the light, etcetera. And whether or not you disagree
- 16:09with the manner of when with with which they go about this,
- 16:12they're still better than they're the better organization
- 16:16then perhaps a force sensitive individual going to the opposite
- 16:21end. This which is the dark, the
- 16:24revenge, the the take all leave nothing mentality of of the dark
- 16:30side. And honestly, I don't think a
- 16:33lot of force sensitive parents really comprehend that there's
- 16:37kind of two sides to this coin. They just I think the Jetta are
- 16:41well known. There's more of them.
- 16:43There isn't just two creeping around, but like if your son or
- 16:50daughter is born with this, wouldn't you want them to be
- 16:53taught how to use it properly? Yeah I would.
- 16:55I would give my kid away but to have no contact is crazy.
- 17:00I know that to me is just it's different because the parents
- 17:03are choosing it, but it's really similar to like it kind of gives
- 17:07me the same ick feeling as the mission schools that they use
- 17:12for Native American kids. You know, they took children,
- 17:16Native American children both here in the US and in Canada and
- 17:20put them in Christian schools and cut their hair and took away
- 17:24their cultural clothing. That's awful as early as
- 17:28possible to ingrain a new culture over the culture that
- 17:32they were born into. And so like again, they were
- 17:36some of them were like literally taken from their parents and
- 17:39never saw them again. So that whole aspect of the Jedi
- 17:44makes me feel really icky because that's been used in the
- 17:47history to wipe out culture and. So.
- 17:53Oh, totally. It's this Gray area and that's
- 17:56why I love that. Like, there, I don't feel like
- 17:57there is a a right or wrong answer here when we're talking
- 18:01about the Jedi specifically. It's just fun to kind of talk
- 18:04around it. Yes, this is an open this.
- 18:08There is no right or wrong answer.
- 18:10It's just fun to ponder because I get the icky.
- 18:14Feeling that you. Do but then I try to talk like,
- 18:17well, OK, what's the alternative?
- 18:19You know? Well, also it depends on what
- 18:22age they were born into. The closer they're born into the
- 18:24Republic era, the worse it is. But I suppose like back, back
- 18:30before it was a little bit more peaceful, even though Acolyte
- 18:33kind of gave us a glimpse into there's shit bullshit going on.
- 18:38There's always evil, there's always evil.
- 18:40So it doesn't matter if you go to a, a, a boarding school, the
- 18:43the Jedi will say, you know, to be taught how to like avoid
- 18:47that. You're still there's still
- 18:48temptation. Sure.
- 18:50Yeah, absolutely. And then, OK, play devil's
- 18:54advocate on this, the ick feeling goes away.
- 18:58If you think about Knights and samurai, they actually did begin
- 19:05training very young. To become a knight.
- 19:07You had to start as a page and then move up to a Squire and
- 19:10then become a knight. And you started at age 7 at
- 19:13least. Yeah, that's what the that's
- 19:15what the Spartans did. Yeah, they trained their sons
- 19:18super early. From very early it was all they
- 19:20focused on and the samurai were the same.
- 19:23The Vikings with the arm rings, they started their boys pretty
- 19:27fucking. And I mean some girls too.
- 19:30Yeah, go shield maidens. But like, it's all culture.
- 19:33Well, and then when you think about that, you're like, oh,
- 19:35that's bad ass. I know, but then you know, but
- 19:38they still got to keep their parents.
- 19:40I don't think there was a Spartan that didn't get to go
- 19:43home and see their parents at the end of their training.
- 19:45Like true family name and everything and defend my
- 19:48father's honor and this that the other you know.
- 19:51Maybe. I guess we we weren't there, so
- 19:53I guess you don't know. Well, I'm saying like the
- 19:56Vikings literally named them like Ragnar son, son of Ragnar.
- 20:01So like, they couldn't escape their parents even if they
- 20:03wanted to. So yeah, yeah, there's still
- 20:07parents involved. I guess.
- 20:08My my big speed bump here in the grand scheme of the Jedi is what
- 20:13why? Why with the parents, you got to
- 20:15remove them from the it's the attachment thing.
- 20:17I know it is. It's got to be, yeah.
- 20:19Then we have Obi Wan talking to Young Lay in the back of that
- 20:22pickup bed, and he remembers glimpses of his family fondly.
- 20:27So do the Jedi have conversations?
- 20:31Is there a class? Is it the Jedi Temple therapist
- 20:35that we always mysteriously wonder if they exist where they
- 20:39talk about this sort of thing? So it's not this big.
- 20:41Oh, you shall not talk about your parents.
- 20:43Parents are gone. You didn't have parents.
- 20:44We are your parents. I don't think it was like that.
- 20:47There must be some like some discussion like your parents
- 20:51wanted this for you. And maybe someday you'll be
- 20:55reunited. I like to think that that's how
- 20:57it went because Obi Wan didn't seem bitter and jaded.
- 21:01No, I mean, he's, it's clear that the Jedi, he said I have a
- 21:06new family. He thinks of them as his family
- 21:09because he really doesn't have the emotional attachment to his
- 21:12birth family, right. The Jedi don't necessarily feel
- 21:18regret. I think.
- 21:21I think you're right that it's got.
- 21:22Wistful. Yeah, because Anakin probably
- 21:26would have been OK if he could have still talked to his mother.
- 21:30I think he would have been an asshole, but I don't think he
- 21:32would have been, you know what I mean?
- 21:34He would have been like a chippy, chirpy, like smart,
- 21:39talking sassy boy, but he wouldn't have been cutting heads
- 21:43off type of sassy boy. But Anakin knew how to love.
- 21:50He knew how to look out and respect because we saw it with
- 21:54Ahsoka, we saw it with some of the cultures that he fought for.
- 22:01We talk about the the little turtle people on Felutia and
- 22:06then the the the Lerman and and the snow, the snowy creatures
- 22:10where he draws like he has respect for entities.
- 22:14Yeah. It he just, it wasn't, it was
- 22:16like it wasn't developed properly.
- 22:18And can that be blamed on his young transition into the Jedi
- 22:22or is that just a something that happens because he was a slave
- 22:25boy like. Exactly, I was just going to say
- 22:28it's not age. Maybe it's slavery instead of
- 22:31age. Maybe it's.
- 22:32Slavery. There's a lot of pent up like
- 22:34this is wrong and how do I make it right?
- 22:36Well, I can't say anything because this guy is going to
- 22:38whip me if I do. Yeah.
- 22:41Isn't Quinlan Boss an an initiate who came later in life
- 22:46and he was a very good Jedi, Yeah.
- 22:49He was. Well, he had.
- 22:50His, I mean, I guess, I guess he fell to the dark side for a
- 22:52little while, but he had his. Moment.
- 22:55But look, he came back. It was just, it was just a
- 22:57vacay. It was whatever.
- 22:59It was an axe. Yeah, true.
- 23:03Well, I don't know. The other thing I, I agree with
- 23:07you, I think it has to do with the parents, because my final
- 23:12argument to myself was, OK, so Knights and and samurai are like
- 23:17elite warriors, right? And they start very young.
- 23:21There's a code of conduct or there's a code of ethics.
- 23:23They're required to live a certain way.
- 23:25Granted, some people broke the rules, but whatever.
- 23:30But to me, the the thing that disproves age as being necessary
- 23:36is there are still elite warriors to this day.
- 23:40There's Navy Seals, there's Delta Force, there's Green
- 23:43Beret. None of those people start as
- 23:47children. And they would argue that they
- 23:50live by a code, They have a conduct that they are.
- 23:53There's a unit code usually as well as a part like in addition
- 23:57to whatever the military coding would be.
- 24:00They're at least 18 years old and older when they join.
- 24:05For the most part. I don't think you can join
- 24:06earlier than 18 even though you can do like ROTC or whatever in
- 24:09high school but that's not the. Same, Yeah.
- 24:12So if you want to be an elite performer living by a certain
- 24:17code of conduct, you don't have to be a child.
- 24:20Right, very true. And so the only excuse I can see
- 24:25for the Jedi is that they want to erase the possibility of
- 24:29attachment. Which I I've had a problem with.
- 24:33This is the beginning. We've done a whole episode on
- 24:36Jedi and attachment. Because see previous episode
- 24:40about attaching. But like, you know how we both
- 24:44feel about that. Yeah, this is very fun.
- 24:47I enjoy this. There is.
- 24:48I just feel like I'm talking myself in a circle, but I don't
- 24:51care. It's interesting.
- 24:53So you mentioned Obi once said like I have a new family now
- 24:57meaning the Jedi, right? So if you think about in a
- 25:00parental context, the child leans on the parents for the
- 25:05hierarchy of needs and that sort of thing.
- 25:07And then you kind of trust in your new family.
- 25:10Let's say that the young Jedi trusts in people like Obi Wan
- 25:13and Quinlan and oh God, not Quinlan, somebody else, not
- 25:18Quinlan. Oh, Yoda, you know, and and you
- 25:20start to like, what is what does a child want from their parents?
- 25:27You want approval. You want to know that you're
- 25:29doing well. You want praise when you do
- 25:32well, you seek that reinforcement to know that
- 25:36you're doing what you're supposed to.
- 25:38And this is correct. And this is good behavior, if
- 25:41you think about it, in the sense of like Anakin.
- 25:44And what really happened with Anakin amongst everything else
- 25:48is that he never got that you're you're doing well, kid.
- 25:53He never got or he thought he never got that.
- 25:55Perhaps a little onus is on Obi Wan for not properly showing it.
- 26:00Maybe he didn't know how to show it.
- 26:01You know, when when you're a teacher, think about teachers
- 26:04and students, you don't want to be too close because that's
- 26:07inappropriate or, or in the Jedi case, you don't want to be too.
- 26:11You don't want to praise them too much because then they might
- 26:13like you more. And then the attachment thing
- 26:16right? Like always with the fucking
- 26:18attachment. But do the young Jedi lack that
- 26:22praise, fulfillment of I'm doing well, I'm wanted here?
- 26:28Not in a class sense. I'm talking one-on-one.
- 26:31Does anyone reinforce positively reinforce these children to the
- 26:36point where they feel like so they don't feel like Anakin,
- 26:40like I do all this shit for nothing.
- 26:42I never get any fuck the Jedi like you know what I mean?
- 26:45Like they're because if you don't give any praise and you
- 26:48never do anything right, and you're never acknowledged when
- 26:51you are doing things correctly, it builds resentment.
- 26:54Resentment leads to Anakin. So just to sum it all up, you
- 26:59know what I'm saying? Like a child who's never paid
- 27:02any attention to and is never kind of like, hey, that's a
- 27:05really good job. You, you're doing so well.
- 27:09If you don't get that, what's the point?
- 27:12I would think as a kid that's neglect, right?
- 27:17A form of emotional neglect. I mean, OK, I'm not qualified to
- 27:21answer this, but we have several listeners I know and in our
- 27:25paper group who who are clinicians.
- 27:28This is a good question for you guys.
- 27:30Can you withhold positive reinforcement?
- 27:33Can you withhold physical affection because children need
- 27:37to be hugged and feel safe, be close to their mother's
- 27:41heartbeat? You know, this, all this.
- 27:43Granted, there's plenty of people who their parents pass
- 27:46away or they're raised in foster or adoption, you know?
- 27:50But can you grow up without affection and not have some sort
- 27:58of what's the word I'm looking for?
- 28:01It's not necessarily like trauma, but dissonance.
- 28:05Like, yeah, yeah, like a separation.
- 28:07Yes, yeah, I I don't have an answer.
- 28:10A detachment. Yeah, I exactly, Yeah.
- 28:14Some all the things yeah. So when I was saying all that I
- 28:19I was kind of stuttering and and talking in herky jerky because I
- 28:23knew that it was border bordering on me like semi
- 28:27diagnosing and I'm not trying to do that, but it it does.
- 28:30I do want to know, do the most successful Jedi get some kind of
- 28:36positive reinforcement throughout?
- 28:39Do they get more hugs than others?
- 28:41Has anyone done a study in the Jedi?
- 28:43Are there any scientists in the Jedi temple?
- 28:47Because they got to be in the same level as the therapist that
- 28:51Anakin didn't visit. Yeah, you know what I mean?
- 28:55Somebody's got to do a study. I know I'm really curious now
- 28:59and of course I'm sure there's no documentation probably on
- 29:04this. We would have to ask Dave Filoni
- 29:06directly. Oh, I will.
- 29:09Let's do it tomorrow. Also, congratulations, Dave
- 29:14Filoni for being the new man of Star Wars.
- 29:17We knew you could do it. We knew you could do it.
- 29:21Don't let us down. That being said, I'm just
- 29:26curious, how young is too young and does it have an impact?
- 29:30We already know that Anakin, quote UN quote is too old and
- 29:33anything beyond young Anakin is too old according to them.
- 29:38So how how young is too young? Because we saw that Clone Wars
- 29:41episode where they're stealing babies, remember?
- 29:43Yeah. Children of the Force CAD Bane
- 29:46is hired by Sidious to steal a Jedi holocron containing the
- 29:49names of four sensitive children and kidnap them for SIFT
- 29:52training. That's the one.
- 29:54It's Season 2, Episode 3. Children of the Force.
- 29:58The hell is going on here? Well the like at least the Jedi
- 30:02don't kidnap children, they are theoretically supposed to talk
- 30:07to parents. And I've always wondered, OK so
- 30:09the Jedi have a list, a holocron with a list.
- 30:13But does that mean at some point the Jedi approach the parents?
- 30:16Or is it always the on the parents to approach the Jedi we
- 30:20have? Has that question ever been
- 30:22answered in Canon? That it's a great question I
- 30:25don't have an answer to. If someone out there does,
- 30:28please answer. That's a good question.
- 30:31We have so many questions. And I was going to say, most of
- 30:34this episode is us just asking questions.
- 30:38Well, there's a lot of questions to ask when it comes to
- 30:40children. We just want the best for them,
- 30:42and I'm sure that the Jedi also wanted the best for them.
- 30:46They certainly didn't want the same thing that the Sith
- 30:49stealing the children wanted. Yes.
- 30:52That was all just another part of Palpatine's bullshit, and he
- 30:55made sure Anakin was one of the ones to go get those children
- 30:59with Ahsoka. You know, they didn't send the
- 31:02two adults. They had to send the two
- 31:04children to go get the children. Well, they're not children,
- 31:07they're teenagers, but you know what I mean.
- 31:09I'm exhausted now. We we've gone around in a circle
- 31:124 times with no no answer. We knew we were going to do
- 31:16this. Yeah, I mean, it's a it's a Gray
- 31:19area for sure. I understand it.
- 31:22It makes me feel icky sometimes. But clearly it's worked out OK
- 31:27if you make a Jedi like Obi Wan Kenobi.
- 31:30That's what I'm saying. It turned out good for the most
- 31:33part. But then Luke was also a really
- 31:36good Jedi as he became yes quote UN quote indoctrinated when he
- 31:39was like 22. And there's Ray, who's like the
- 31:44biggest mix of all wrong things and she's fine.
- 31:48Does it have to do more with the teacher?
- 31:50Don't know. Or how about we just have
- 31:52personalities? You know, actually all the best
- 31:59Jedi had great personalities. Who's great again?
- 32:03Chiari Mundi. I'm sorry, just.
- 32:06Kidding. How dare you?
- 32:08I'm sorry, sorry, had to throw them in there somehow.
- 32:13I think we need to have like a licensed clinician on so we can
- 32:17ask them all our. Questions, yeah, but still.
- 32:21There's no. It won't be like a solid answer,
- 32:24but at least yes. Exactly.
- 32:25Human our world kind of answers about whether or not that would
- 32:30actually be possible or if they would really just be causing
- 32:34long term damage to a child. Literally, yeah.
- 32:37And do we really want to know the answer or should we just
- 32:39stay in this Galaxy universe that's all fake and it's just
- 32:43ATV show and it's just a movie and it's, you know, yeah, it's
- 32:48just George Lucas, right? I tried to look to see if it's
- 32:53based on a culture. Yeah, I can find anything.
- 32:56Nothing. All the things that I found were
- 32:58negative references to religious indoctrination, and I don't
- 33:02think that's what the Jedi are based on, so no.
- 33:07I think they just don't want the force to be used incorrectly and
- 33:13I don't blame them. Yeah, so they try and grab them
- 33:15while they're young, train them. That's it.
- 33:19Don't use the dark side. Be afraid of the dark side.
- 33:22But somewhere along the way, we lose a few to the thing that
- 33:25they're teaching them not to do. So human nature, nature versus
- 33:29nurture, we could go on for days.
- 33:32I guess we just put a stop to it here because I don't.
- 33:37I mean, I'm out of questions for now.
- 33:41It is fun to toss this around with you.
- 33:44This was great. This is such a good subject.
- 33:46I know we've also talked about discussing slavery in Star Wars,
- 33:50and I think that also will be a very juicy episode with maybe a
- 33:55lot of questions. What we could do is just go down
- 33:58through the Jedi code and break it down one piece by piece and
- 34:02question everything. Just play devil's advocate to
- 34:04the whole thing. Yeah, and then we could do the
- 34:08same with the Sith code and see where it might actually be good.
- 34:14All righty. Maybe the Sith weren't wrong.
- 34:17I don't. Know there's a balance in there
- 34:20somewhere, and Luke Skywalker is the one who's going to bring it
- 34:23to us, OK? I am here for it.
- 34:26Luke can save me anytime. A to the man, all the men.
- 34:40All right, our next episode is actually going to drop on a
- 34:43weird day. Yes.
- 34:46I think it's a Saturday because we are participating in Star
- 34:51Wars Podcast Day 2026, the first time it's going to be dropping
- 34:57on February 7th, which like I said, I think is a Saturday.
- 35:00And it's just an opportunity to kind of promote podcasting in
- 35:04the Star Wars universe. And we don't know what we're
- 35:07going to talk about, so you'll have to tune in to see.
- 35:11Yes, chances are it will be about Obi Wan.
- 35:14So you don't want to miss it, Yeah.
- 35:16Our favorite subject Our. Favorite subject?
- 35:19Always. Oh boy.
- 35:23New Year's resolutions were what?
- 35:25That was a hit. We got so many comments.
- 35:28We got comments on Tumblr, we got comments on YouTube,
- 35:31Instagram. Yeah, y'all were in it to win it
- 35:35with this one. So Lauren's got them up and
- 35:37she's going to read a couple because we got so many.
- 35:41We love them. All right, Tara on YouTube said
- 35:45Anakin needs like a weekly hypnotherapy session and it
- 35:49needs to be mandatory. I do not disagree.
- 35:57Yep. Pieces of the story SL3 XW on
- 36:04YouTube said. I was thinking that Hans might
- 36:06be that he needs to finally work on finding or creating a
- 36:09hyperdrive that can't be tampered with or broken so
- 36:12easily. That's excellent.
- 36:15He could do it. That's something you could
- 36:17achieve. Yes, Yes, yes.
- 36:22Maybe he could sell them if you figured that out and then, you
- 36:25know, Yeah. Protect everybody.
- 36:29Take Leo on that vacation she needs.
- 36:32Girl, yes. Right.
- 36:34Please. Huh.
- 36:35Do the right thing, OK on Tumblr, I'm so sorry.
- 36:41I cannot pronounce this username because it's it's a YUZAWAKURAN.
- 36:51I'm sorry, I don't know how to pronounce that.
- 36:53That is a lot of letters. But they said that they wanted
- 36:59Krenik to have to wear a stress monitor.
- 37:05They said imagine it beeping random times because he's just
- 37:09trying to keep it together. His heart is pounding, setting
- 37:14it off. There does this thing need
- 37:16charged? How does it stay powered?
- 37:18Because it would be dead in an hour.
- 37:21That's. True.
- 37:25Not him the the stress monitor. Yeah, yeah.
- 37:29Oh yeah, yeah. Yeah, not not.
- 37:31Printed No, no no, it explodes. He can take the pressure, the
- 37:37sensor cannot. I like this one.
- 37:40I approve. Oh my goodness.
- 37:43And our dear friend Adela on Instagram said I feel like
- 37:46Anakin's New Year's resolution would be to learn a new Droid
- 37:49language. Old ones would be to quit
- 37:52drinking because Anakin is only Obi Wan drinks and qui gun would
- 37:55have have one like pick less fights with the council.
- 38:02All achievable I think. Probably all necessary.
- 38:07Necessary, yes. Achievable, maybe.
- 38:10I love it. You guys are amazing, all of
- 38:13you. Even the ones we didn't get a
- 38:14chance to read on air, we read them.
- 38:16We love them. Yes, delightful.
