- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Uh, just very briefly back to choose.
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: Is it one of those where you're gonna have games like that across the season?
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: Are they more frustrating because of the way it happened, or can you find those easy to put behind because actually, you know what, we've done a lot of stuff pretty well?
- 0:13SPEAKER_01: Um I think a bit of both.
- 0:15SPEAKER_01: I think we can be very frustrated by it, but uh I think we've done enough sort of in the first half, especially to win the game.
- 0:22SPEAKER_01: Um I think on another day we score one or two of the chances that we created, and the mistakes that happened don't really get talked about.
- 0:30SPEAKER_01: So um yeah, you can be frustrated with it, but we've got to move on now.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: And I guess it it's one of those where because it you were much better going forward but didn't score the goals compared to like the the Lincoln game or the the Warsaw game, which but they were sort of similar things, and the fact you've only scored three goals at home, you you don't want it to be a problem, you don't want it to be in your head going into games at Ashton Gate.
- 0:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's it's difficult when teams come to Ashton Gate, they know to sit in a low block and um make it make it really difficult for us.
- 0:58SPEAKER_01: But we did cre I feel like we did create enough chances the other night.
- 1:01SPEAKER_01: It is just that final bit that we need to get right, um, and it will come, it just takes time.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: As we were chatting in the um in the contra on the night, you you had a sort of half chance there yourself, and it's it's it's been a while, hasn't it?
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: I think back to New Year's Day a few years ago at Watford, so uh surely this season it's got to come.
- 1:19SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, I hope so.
- 1:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, um I'm I'm trying to get myself higher up the pitch and yeah, like I said, like get into those positions where I can shoot or assist uh and help the team.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and because there are there are players who frankly don't look like they enjoy being at that end of the pitch, and and you're not really one of them.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: You're at your best, you you're up and down and and looking to cause problems down that left hand side.
- 1:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's just it's it's trying to get a little bit of consistency in my game now and try try sort of stay in the team and um yeah, get a bit of momentum, and that's that's what I enjoy doing up at up and down the up and down the pitch on the left side, so yeah, just a bit of momentum.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and and that consistency and momentum has been tough to come by last sort of well last season into this because you you haven't really had a run of games, have you, whether it was injury to start with or not or getting in the team?
- 2:03SPEAKER_01: I yeah, I had a good pre-season this year, um, and then took a little bit of a hit in the Warsaw game, which set me back slightly, but um I'm in a good place now and uh yeah, just keep working and hopefully get that momentum.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because because you know you've got it.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: We we've all seen it out there plenty of times.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: Is it one of those a bit like a striker when they get a goal, you have a good game, then okay, but we can start building on that and and and take it from there.
- 2:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, definitely.
- 2:27SPEAKER_01: I think that yeah, obviously, you just need to have confidence and grow, I suppose.
- 2:32SPEAKER_01: But um, yeah, I'm I'm doing my best to sort of help the team at the minute, which whichever way that may be.
- 2:38SPEAKER_01: Um, and it will, I feel like it will click eventually.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: And and I think that's probably true of the team as well, because you look at the the side from the other night, there's plenty that have been here, but there's a lot of new faces still in there, and and that going forward was better than some of the previous games.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: So you can kind of see the the work going on.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: What you need to do now is is put it all together and and try and get that run at some point, I guess, this side of Christmas.
- 3:03SPEAKER_01: I I we I I can see it coming.
- 3:05SPEAKER_01: It is it is we are playing well, I think.
- 3:08SPEAKER_01: Um it like I say, it's just taking those last bits in the box, in and around the box, and sort of stopping the the sloppy mistakes at the back and um conceding goals that we shouldn't really concede.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and and that, especially on a night like Tuesday, was gives doubly frustrating because they didn't really have any chances other than the goal, and and sometimes that's football, isn't it?
- 3:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I thought for for for the first 30 minutes I think we were um a lot better than them.
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: Um the goal was sort of against the run of play, and I think it was sort of like a hammer blow to us.
- 3:45SPEAKER_01: Like um after not scoring the two or three chances we had before, um, keeper pulling off like great saves.
- 3:52SPEAKER_01: It it was sort of a a hammer blow, and yeah, it was a frustrating one to take, but we we've we've got to deal with that better and um come come back from it and keep working.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and and that's the I guess as a group, the the squad as a whole is is the room for growth, isn't it?
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: That sort of resilience of okay, that's gone against us, let's just put it right, let's let's make sure before the final whistle we're not coming off that field feeling the way you did on Tuesday.
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, definitely.
- 4:17SPEAKER_01: And we've got we've got another game at the of the weekend at home, so we can we can do our best to put it right.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, against Sheffield United, who traditionally are one of those teams you'd expect to be there or thereabouts, uh going through a tough time.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: But I think any Chris Wilder team, you know you at the very least you're in for a tough afternoon.
- 4:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, definitely.
- 4:35SPEAKER_01: Um you you like you say you expect them to be up there, and um I think they've had a tough start to the season, but they're similar to us in in respects, a bit up and down.
- 4:44SPEAKER_01: Um, but it would be a tough game and very competitive.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: And just to get a win and get it back to to three wins, three defeats at home, but just try and get that little bit of momentum going into to some you know where you've been playing your better football away from home.
- 4:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think that's what it is.
- 5:00SPEAKER_01: Uh I think we just yeah, like say a bit of momentum at home and um try try get a f a few wins on the board.
- 5:07SPEAKER_01: Thank you very much.
- 5:08SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 5:09SPEAKER_02: Right, you mentioned kind of pre-season.
- 5:11SPEAKER_02: You had was it surgery right at the end of last year?
- 5:14SPEAKER_02: Were you but what was kind of what was that like?
- 5:16SPEAKER_02: Was that kind of with the aim of being ready to hit the ground running this summer?
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, um, so it wasn't it wasn't a major surgery, it was just a sort of clean up of my ankle.
- 5:26SPEAKER_01: Um so it wasn't gonna be a massive setback for me, but it was to uh hit the ground running pre-season, really, which I did.
- 5:34SPEAKER_01: Um, and then obviously the Warsaw game was a little bit of a setback, but uh yeah, I'm I'm fit and raring to go now.
- 5:41SPEAKER_02: You're someone that kind of copes with that sort of time where you know you've done all that hard work, I imagine you're going into that Warsaw game, really looking forward to the start of the season.
- 5:49SPEAKER_01: How how do you kind of cope with those moments?
- 5:51SPEAKER_01: It is a bit frustrating.
- 5:53SPEAKER_01: Um, you feel like you've worked six, seven weeks, it's always tough preseasons, the hardest six, seven weeks of being a footballer.
- 6:00SPEAKER_01: Um so yeah, it is frustrating the first game of the season.
- 6:03SPEAKER_01: You take a knock and it it's a big setback, but um yeah, you just gotta keep training well and keep going, really.
- 6:09SPEAKER_02: So I think when we spoke to Michael that evening as well, he said how well you've been playing it over pre-season.
- 6:13SPEAKER_02: Do you feel this system's kind of built to get the best out of you?
- 6:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it it is.
- 6:19SPEAKER_01: Um I'm sort of given a free roll to go up and down the pitch, which is which uh is a massive strength of mine, I think.
- 6:25SPEAKER_01: So yeah, it it helps me massively.
- 6:27SPEAKER_02: How does that kind of compare to what you were doing under Roy last year?
- 6:30SPEAKER_02: Because I think when we spoke to you before that Birmingham game, I think it would have been you mentioned how you felt that was kind of getting the best out of you.
- 6:36SPEAKER_01: I feel like it was a a little bit more simpler under Roy.
- 6:40SPEAKER_01: Um we were 4-4-2 generally, so um it was sort of I'm still I'm still I had a free roll to get forward, um, but it was having a winger in front of me rather than a 10.
- 6:51SPEAKER_01: So um it's it's still pretty similar for me.
- 6:55SPEAKER_01: Um where I was on the last line for Roy a lot.
- 6:58SPEAKER_01: I'm still on the last line now.
- 6:59SPEAKER_02: How have you found working under Michael in general?
- 7:02SPEAKER_02: What's what has he kind of brought brought to the camp?
- 7:05SPEAKER_01: I think it's been really good.
- 7:06SPEAKER_01: Um it it just takes uh a while for the the lads to sort of gel together, but we've been putting in some really good performances and hopefully it uh clicks soon.
- 7:15SPEAKER_02: I think we've asked um Joe and Scott kind of when there's that much change happening around you as a player in the summer.
- 7:20SPEAKER_02: What's kind of that like when you know you're coming in and there's new faces quite often and different things happening?
- 7:26SPEAKER_01: It's been exciting to be honest.
- 7:27SPEAKER_01: Um I've been here a while now, and this is the most I've seen sort of the club move in the summer um or any window to be honest.
- 7:36SPEAKER_01: Um so it's it's just really exciting to be around.
- 7:38SPEAKER_02: Do you feel like you've been around for as long as you have?
- 7:40SPEAKER_02: I was looking back and it feels like it's gone quite quickly with so much has happened in that time.
- 7:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it has gone quickly.
- 7:45SPEAKER_01: Um and it's it's been sort of frustrating at the same time because we do want to move forward, and I I can actually see that now.
- 7:52SPEAKER_02: I think when we spoke to you up, it would have been this almost this time last year.
- 7:55SPEAKER_02: You mentioned how you want to be part of that side when Bristol City make that step.
- 7:59SPEAKER_02: That ambition feels very present around the building at the moment.
- 8:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, definitely.
- 8:04SPEAKER_01: Again, going back to your your old question, I think um with the amount of change that's happened, I think we have now put a foot forward in the right direction to make that possible.
- 8:14SPEAKER_02: And that change brings a bit of competition as well.
- 8:16SPEAKER_02: I think everyone's been speaking a lot about Rio, and obviously Lysav can play left back as well.
- 8:19SPEAKER_02: Is that something you relish in?
- 8:21SPEAKER_01: Competition is always good.
- 8:22SPEAKER_01: I think I've played my best when I have had competition.
- 8:26SPEAKER_01: I think um any any team sort of needs it, uh, especially in the championship where there's so many games.
- 8:32SPEAKER_01: Um you see you've seen over the last few years um injuries at the bat.
- 8:36SPEAKER_02: We we need as many people as possible.
- 8:38SPEAKER_02: What have you made of kind of Rio's starters?
- 8:40SPEAKER_02: Imagine you'll be doing a lot of work together together.
- 8:42SPEAKER_02: It seems like he's really taken to the championship.
- 8:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he has.
- 8:44SPEAKER_01: He's um he's got a hell of a delivery on him.
- 8:47SPEAKER_02: Um he's he's done really well.
- 8:49SPEAKER_02: Do you um can you I guess can you help each other?
- 8:51SPEAKER_02: I think there's so much emphasis, isn't there, based on because you he's a younger head, maybe learning off the players around him.
- 8:56SPEAKER_02: But do you feel there's ways you can both learn from each other?
- 8:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, definitely.
- 9:00SPEAKER_01: Um I feel I feel like we're different kind of players, which like you say, we can learn learn different things off each other.
- 9:07SPEAKER_01: Um he's he he's he's a very good player.
- 9:11SPEAKER_01: I'm sure he'll have a very, very good future.
- 9:12SPEAKER_02: In terms of that backline as well, there's been a fair bit of change, and yourself included when you've come in and out of the site.
- 9:17SPEAKER_02: Does that affect trying to put that bit of consistency together, or is it just a case of when you're in the site doing your best to try to keep hold of that shit?
- 9:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, just just when you're in the side, do the best job you can.
- 9:27SPEAKER_01: Um, and consistency will come with it, I guess.
- 9:29SPEAKER_01: Um I think the defence has been quite solid to be honest.
- 9:34SPEAKER_01: I I think some of the goals we've conceded have been very sloppy, yes, but we haven't really gave teams many chances.
- 9:41SPEAKER_01: You see, the other night it was only two chances, and they were they were relatively low quality chances.
- 9:48SPEAKER_01: Um, so I think together we've been quite solid.
- 9:51SPEAKER_01: Um we just need to uh get firing in in the other end now.
- 9:56SPEAKER_02: Michael spoke quite a lot about the team learning, gelling together.
- 9:59SPEAKER_02: Do you do you still feel like you're still learning, even though you have been in this division for a while now?
- 10:03SPEAKER_02: Is there always still new stuff that you're picking up?
- 10:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, definitely.
- 10:06SPEAKER_01: Um it's always different faces in the championship, you play different players, so it's always um a learning curve.
- 10:13SPEAKER_01: Um and yeah, I've been in the championship now, so it's it's a lot of experience there.
- 10:19SPEAKER_01: Um, so it's it's helping the other players in the team as well.
- 10:22SPEAKER_02: Just in terms of kind of the mood after after Tuesday and this sort of change, I think Rob said like that was kind of baffled and similar with the result.
- 10:28SPEAKER_02: What's the kind of reaction been like around this place in the last few days?
- 10:32SPEAKER_01: Um frustration, but I think it's from a place knowing that we we we should be winning those games, and I think watching the game back, we've we've created so much and gave them so little.
- 10:45SPEAKER_01: Um we know we know one we know one game it's just gonna click and we're gonna be we're gonna be a top top championship team.
- 10:52SPEAKER_02: So and then Saturday do you kind of try to park that frustration, or can that be a bit of fuel heading into the weekend?
- 10:58SPEAKER_01: I think a bit of fuel.
- 10:59SPEAKER_01: I think um yeah, we got going to the weekend just uh like trying to put it right, really.
- 11:04SPEAKER_01: Um and then consistency comes off the back of that.
- 11:08SPEAKER_02: Imagine it'd be even more important to do that at Ashton Gate as well, because obviously away up away next weekend if you can go put in a result at home.
- 11:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, definitely.
- 11:16SPEAKER_01: Um we we obviously get frustrated because we want to make Ashton Gate a fortress.
- 11:20SPEAKER_01: Um obviously it hasn't worked out that way this season yet.
- 11:24SPEAKER_01: Um but yeah, we need we need to start winning at home.
- 11:27SPEAKER_02: Feels like it can be though.
- 11:28SPEAKER_02: I think back to those performances, even on Tuesday night, it it doesn't feel far away.
- 11:33SPEAKER_01: It's not it's not far away at all.
- 11:34SPEAKER_01: It's it's like I said, on another day I don't think we're talking about this because we we score one or two goals and yeah, it's it's not a big talking point.
- 11:44SPEAKER_01: The keeper made some unbelievable saves the other night, and uh yeah, on another day we're just not talking about losing Ashton Gate again.
