- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome into another episode of Inside the Charge. I'm Maddi Glab.
- 0:03Speaker 1: In today's episode, we've got cornerbacks. Forere Suell Douglas and
- 0:06Speaker 1: Christian benfor joining us. They're on opposite sides of the
- 0:09Speaker 1: field during the game, but off the field, these two
- 0:12Speaker 1: are best friends. They get into how that friendship started,
- 0:16Speaker 1: how the defense has been playing at a high level
- 0:19Speaker 1: this season, and we talk a little game day fashion.
- 0:21Speaker 1: It's an episode you don't want to miss, all right,
- 0:33Speaker 1: Rasul and Christian, thanks for sitting down with us straight
- 0:35Speaker 1: off of the practice field. Christian, when I asked you
- 0:38Speaker 1: about this interview, you said I would do it if
- 0:41Speaker 1: you had some jokes or riddles for me. So I'm
- 0:44Speaker 1: gonna test my luck with these riddles. I don't know
- 0:47Speaker 1: how hard they are. They were hard for me, but
- 0:49Speaker 1: I'm sure they're way too easy for you.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Guys. Here's the first one. You can work together. What
- 0:56Speaker 2: question can you never say yes to? What question can
- 1:01Speaker 2: you what question can you never say yes to?
- 1:06Speaker 3: That?
- 1:09Speaker 4: That one that you just asked.
- 1:12Speaker 2: Question.
- 1:14Speaker 4: I don't want to say this. I feel like it's sad.
- 1:16Speaker 4: Is it a sad answer?
- 1:18Speaker 2: No, it's not.
- 1:19Speaker 1: It's something we do every single day.
- 1:25Speaker 4: Are you sleep?
- 1:26Speaker 2: Yes?
- 1:27Speaker 4: I know that's like on tell you two questions.
- 1:30Speaker 1: What question can you never say yes to? Are you asleep? Okay,
- 1:34Speaker 1: here's the here's the next one.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Good job. People make me, save me, change me? Raise me?
- 1:41Speaker 2: What am I? People make me, save me? Change me?
- 1:46Speaker 2: Raise me?
- 1:47Speaker 4: What am I?
- 1:49Speaker 2: That would be correct? Can you?
- 1:52Speaker 5: Can you?
- 1:53Speaker 2: I guess you could save a kid? It's an item.
- 1:57Speaker 4: People make me, save me, change me?
- 1:59Speaker 1: And last one, raise me and raise you?
- 2:02Speaker 5: And don we use every day?
- 2:04Speaker 2: We use it on most days.
- 2:05Speaker 1: I would say you probably use this every single day.
- 2:12Speaker 5: Fine water, I'm saying.
- 2:14Speaker 2: Anything you ready for the answer?
- 2:19Speaker 5: No, no, no, no, no, give me like it was like,
- 2:21Speaker 5: hold hold on.
- 2:23Speaker 4: Be mad?
- 2:24Speaker 2: People make me, save me, change me, raise me? What
- 2:29Speaker 2: am I?
- 2:30Speaker 4: Raise you? I think the raised me partsed on me off.
- 2:33Speaker 1: What's something that can go up and can go down?
- 2:37Speaker 1: It can fluctuate, move your mood? You know it's it's visible?
- 2:46Speaker 5: Mm hmm.
- 2:48Speaker 4: Make me you smile?
- 2:50Speaker 2: I don't not emotions. You ready for the answer? Money?
- 2:58Speaker 2: People make me, save me, change me? Raise me?
- 3:07Speaker 1: Okay, all right, I'll give you one more. What five
- 3:11Speaker 1: letter word? What five letter word becomes shorter when you
- 3:17Speaker 1: add two letters to it. Don't think about this one
- 3:22Speaker 1: too hard. What five letter word becomes shorter when you
- 3:27Speaker 1: add two letters to it?
- 3:33Speaker 4: You say, it becomes shorter when when you.
- 3:35Speaker 1: Add two letters to it.
- 3:40Speaker 2: Good job, all right, way to go. I'm I'm impressed.
- 3:46Speaker 2: Two out of three.
- 3:47Speaker 1: I think that's pretty good average right there. We'll have
- 3:52Speaker 1: more in the in the next episode if you guys
- 3:54Speaker 1: decide to return after these fun questions. Okay, you guys
- 3:59Speaker 1: have doing such a great job this year as a defense.
- 4:03Speaker 1: There's been a lot of injuries on both sides of
- 4:04Speaker 1: the football, but specifically on defense. How have you guys
- 4:08Speaker 1: continued to step up in the absence of others?
- 4:11Speaker 2: Rusull, I'll start with you, Uh.
- 4:13Speaker 4: We just got the next man mentality. We all preach
- 4:18Speaker 4: it and we all have that understanding of when it's
- 4:22Speaker 4: my time, you want to take advantage of it because
- 4:24Speaker 4: you never know when you can get it back. So
- 4:27Speaker 4: we just always feel like that when we do get
- 4:29Speaker 4: the opportunity just to show off our talents, we practice
- 4:32Speaker 4: that way. Everybody gets reps, everybody sees it so that
- 4:36Speaker 4: if case anything does happen, you've been there before, You've
- 4:39Speaker 4: been in a position where everyone trusts you to do
- 4:41Speaker 4: your job. And I think that's where it really stems from,
- 4:44Speaker 4: just all of us just trusting in each other.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Christian Russell got traded here last year at the end
- 4:50Speaker 1: of October. How quickly did he fit into the defense
- 4:54Speaker 1: and into how you guys operate day and day out here?
- 4:58Speaker 3: You're feeling pretty quickly, O would. So he's he's a
- 5:02Speaker 3: pretty open guy, vocal, so relationships wasn't hard to to
- 5:08Speaker 3: create with him. He's a good spirited so and for
- 5:13Speaker 3: the system wise, he's a ball hawk. That's one thing
- 5:16Speaker 3: that we speak on, getting the ball no matter what
- 5:19Speaker 3: and how whatever, however, you need to get the ball.
- 5:23Speaker 3: So that's one thing we preach on here. And what
- 5:26Speaker 3: soon was that type of guy? He's a he's a
- 5:28Speaker 3: ball hog. He's a ball getter. However you need you,
- 5:30Speaker 3: however you want you, he get the ball.
- 5:32Speaker 1: So Russell, was it easy to feel at home here
- 5:36Speaker 1: pretty quickly? Or or did it take a few months
- 5:38Speaker 1: to feel like, Okay, I got it. I know, I understand,
- 5:41Speaker 1: I understand my teammates, I understand the system.
- 5:44Speaker 4: Uh nah, I fell in like the first day, like
- 5:47Speaker 4: I said when I first got here, like Ed vond
- 5:49Speaker 4: and all of them, they came up to me, you know,
- 5:51Speaker 4: dab me up. It was like, come on, man, we're
- 5:52Speaker 4: a family here. And when I first got on a
- 5:55Speaker 4: practice field, before I made anybody, they was just speaking
- 5:57Speaker 4: worse than my old sub bro, like this is who
- 6:00Speaker 4: I am, this is who I am. We are family
- 6:02Speaker 4: with a team here, or you gonna like it here,
- 6:04Speaker 4: things like that, and then you know, eventually you build
- 6:06Speaker 4: relationships with the guys, and it felt good right away.
- 6:10Speaker 1: If you spend a day at practice, a day around
- 6:13Speaker 1: this building, it's easy to see that you guys spend
- 6:16Speaker 1: a lot of time together. You're in the same position group,
- 6:18Speaker 1: so it makes sense. But it's also easy to see
- 6:21Speaker 1: that there's a friendship as well. Christian, when did that
- 6:23Speaker 1: friendship begin?
- 6:25Speaker 5: That's tough.
- 6:27Speaker 3: I generally believe it probably it probably sparked when he
- 6:30Speaker 3: first got here because like he didn't really like obviously
- 6:36Speaker 3: he didn't know where to go, what to do in
- 6:38Speaker 3: certain like transitions and team from teen period to team period.
- 6:41Speaker 3: And then it was just like he was like, yo, bro,
- 6:43Speaker 3: come this way, come this way. So it's like here,
- 6:46Speaker 3: come that's way.
- 6:47Speaker 4: Yo.
- 6:47Speaker 3: Heah, like yo, where we're going? And I'd be like, yo,
- 6:50Speaker 3: follow me. I got you ready, but me And when
- 6:52Speaker 3: Dane was here, it was me Dane, We're like, bro,
- 6:54Speaker 3: come this way or it's this way. Were about to
- 6:56Speaker 3: do it like that and the more and more than
- 6:59Speaker 3: I have, Man's That's that's when it started. That's why
- 7:02Speaker 3: I feel like when you when he originally got here,
- 7:04Speaker 3: that's why I feel like our relationship started and it
- 7:06Speaker 3: sparked because it was just like respect rip you know
- 7:09Speaker 3: what I'm saying.
- 7:10Speaker 5: It was just like a good bond.
- 7:13Speaker 1: There's respect there. But I also feel like, you guys
- 7:15Speaker 1: have a lot in common. How did that play into
- 7:18Speaker 1: the friendship?
- 7:18Speaker 2: Risul?
- 7:19Speaker 5: Uh, Yeah, we do.
- 7:23Speaker 4: Yeah, we got got in common. But it's just you know,
- 7:26Speaker 4: he's coming here being new, like he said, and then
- 7:28Speaker 4: him just you know, showing me what they do and
- 7:30Speaker 4: how they do things here because I was new, and
- 7:32Speaker 4: then us just talking man and then talking ball. We
- 7:36Speaker 4: both like you know, watch each other saying each other
- 7:38Speaker 4: play and uh, just tips of like oh how do
- 7:40Speaker 4: you see this or how did you play this? Or
- 7:42Speaker 4: things like that, and it helped us and then like
- 7:44Speaker 4: we kind of like just carried it off the field,
- 7:46Speaker 4: were just texting each other, and then I just I
- 7:48Speaker 4: just met his family, then he met my family, and
- 7:50Speaker 4: then you know, we both got a kid. I got
- 7:53Speaker 4: a son and he got a son as well, so
- 7:55Speaker 4: they kind of matched together and been cool. So it's
- 7:59Speaker 4: really just turned into that. And then we both like
- 8:00Speaker 4: believe in God. We both believe in God heavy, and
- 8:03Speaker 4: we put him first before everything. So that kind of
- 8:06Speaker 4: air just just really spark it and took it crazy.
- 8:09Speaker 4: So now he kind of like my best.
- 8:10Speaker 1: Friend brother Christian. How does that help when you have
- 8:14Speaker 1: you both have a son, you both are one of
- 8:17Speaker 1: multiple siblings, you both have a dog multiple I know
- 8:21Speaker 1: you have multiple versoul, but how does that help when
- 8:24Speaker 1: you have those commonalities? And then on top of that,
- 8:26Speaker 1: he's a brother in christ as well?
- 8:30Speaker 2: What you have? What know?
- 8:32Speaker 4: How did you know he had a dog?
- 8:34Speaker 2: You have a dog?
- 8:35Speaker 1: Oh it was on your profile on the website.
- 8:43Speaker 3: Now, I feel like relationships become easier and stronger when
- 8:50Speaker 3: when you understand somebody, like when some when somebody else
- 8:54Speaker 3: you have like related things y'all can relate to, because
- 8:58Speaker 3: again a lot of people in this world can't relate
- 9:00Speaker 3: to you in a certain aspects, especially at matority level or
- 9:03Speaker 3: when they walk with Christ. Some people there, some people
- 9:07Speaker 3: not there, and that's okay, and like everybody got their
- 9:09Speaker 3: own path in this world, but it's it's easier when
- 9:14Speaker 3: it's when it's somebody that.
- 9:16Speaker 5: Understands you a little bit.
- 9:18Speaker 3: And we all got like tough pass and tough obstacles
- 9:21Speaker 3: that God shared, and again, it makes it kind of
- 9:24Speaker 3: easier to talk to somebody that understands you know what
- 9:27Speaker 3: I'm saying, that really feels that pain, not just somebody
- 9:29Speaker 3: that's listening just.
- 9:30Speaker 5: To be like all right, yeah you right, yo, you alright.
- 9:33Speaker 3: Nah, somebody that really be like, yo, bro, I feel
- 9:35Speaker 3: you I've been there, and they give their own example
- 9:37Speaker 3: like it hit different, you know what I'm saying. And
- 9:40Speaker 3: then it's like on top of that, it's like you
- 9:43Speaker 3: could you kind of could trust somebody that that been
- 9:46Speaker 3: has been where you've been, you know what I'm saying.
- 9:48Speaker 3: And I feel like trust is kind of like my
- 9:50Speaker 3: biggest thing, like on relationships, like gota be able to
- 9:54Speaker 3: trust somebody to build a good bond with them, you
- 9:56Speaker 3: know what I'm saying. I'd be able to go through
- 9:58Speaker 3: the fire with them to build a good bond with them.
- 10:00Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying, we have the same we
- 10:03Speaker 3: my kids six, his kids six. Shoot, we've been like
- 10:07Speaker 3: you know what I'm saying sometimes sometimes growing up. So
- 10:12Speaker 3: all that stuff kind of plays the part into relationship.
- 10:15Speaker 3: Even God says that like the in the scripture telling
- 10:17Speaker 3: me understanding God more and that God God's relationship type God.
- 10:22Speaker 3: Know what I'm saying, understand Jesus more will bring your
- 10:24Speaker 3: relationship with Jesus closer, stronger. What I'm saying, understand him,
- 10:27Speaker 3: He'll understands you d all close to God and God
- 10:30Speaker 3: with all close to you, you know what I'm saying,
- 10:32Speaker 3: and the same thing like that mean and sure yeah, shoot,
- 10:34Speaker 3: we can been through the same thing.
- 10:35Speaker 5: J all close to one another.
- 10:38Speaker 1: That's having that factor and relationship where in friendship where
- 10:42Speaker 1: it feels like, Okay, this is real.
- 10:44Speaker 2: He is one of my best friends. On this team.
- 10:46Speaker 2: We talk about more than just football. It's real life
- 10:49Speaker 2: with us.
- 10:49Speaker 1: We feel like we have commonalities and our experiences. When
- 10:53Speaker 1: you have all of that and you have that foundation, restul,
- 10:56Speaker 1: how does that play into your relationship on the field.
- 11:01Speaker 1: When the ball is snapped, you guys are on separate
- 11:03Speaker 1: sides of the field, But having that friendship off the field.
- 11:06Speaker 1: How does that play into how you operate when it's
- 11:09Speaker 1: time to play well?
- 11:10Speaker 4: The like like you said, the trust is is there.
- 11:13Speaker 3: Uh.
- 11:13Speaker 4: We both hold each other accountable. We both are like
- 11:15Speaker 4: hot standards. Uh, we said all the time to each other,
- 11:18Speaker 4: so we both it's easy to just help hold him
- 11:21Speaker 4: accountable and easy for him to hold me accountable. And
- 11:23Speaker 4: and we talk every play even though we playing both
- 11:25Speaker 4: sides field. We let each other know what we seeing
- 11:27Speaker 4: every time we come off of the field, and and
- 11:30Speaker 4: all type of we always communicating and talking. But just
- 11:33Speaker 4: like y I know what I'm go'a get out of him,
- 11:35Speaker 4: you know, and we know each other so I know
- 11:37Speaker 4: if a play happened, I know how he gonna respond.
- 11:40Speaker 4: Like before, like once it happened, I see it. I
- 11:41Speaker 4: really know he gonna respond. So I know when I
- 11:43Speaker 4: come out to the bench, but see me, don't he
- 11:45Speaker 4: don't wanna talk. So like sometimes I tell DoD like, YO,
- 11:48Speaker 4: leave him alone, you know what I mean, Like I
- 11:49Speaker 4: cause I know him, you know what I mean. I
- 11:51Speaker 4: be like, YO, leave him alone?
- 11:52Speaker 5: He good?
- 11:52Speaker 4: Like trust me, like he I.
- 11:54Speaker 5: Know what he know.
- 11:55Speaker 4: He know what you about to say, like you ain't
- 11:57Speaker 4: got to say it, and I just look at him.
- 11:58Speaker 4: I'll be like, you're good and he just be like
- 12:00Speaker 4: good and which is on to the next And he
- 12:02Speaker 4: know me for me, He's he know how I am.
- 12:05Speaker 4: And maybe sometimes when I be messed up in the
- 12:06Speaker 4: game and he'd come up to me and be like, Sue,
- 12:08Speaker 4: be good, bro, trust God, bro, process and not the result.
- 12:13Speaker 4: And I be needing sometimes to you know, clear my
- 12:15Speaker 4: manket Sometimes I'd be like, I get frustrated easy. So
- 12:19Speaker 4: like sometimes I'd be coming to him and he'll just
- 12:21Speaker 4: talk to me and be like, Yo, you're good, bro,
- 12:22Speaker 4: trust God, process everything, just those words you just sometimes
- 12:25Speaker 4: you just need them in the game.
- 12:27Speaker 1: So knowing how you guys operate and knowing that sometimes
- 12:31Speaker 1: there doesn't need to be worse to understand how the
- 12:33Speaker 1: person next to you is feeling. Christian, how do your
- 12:36Speaker 1: personalities fit with each other, because from the outside it
- 12:39Speaker 1: seems like opposites. Rasuel, you can hear Christian you always.
- 12:43Speaker 1: You can't always hear you.
- 12:45Speaker 4: That's the crazy thing. Because he'd be talking more than me. Oh,
- 12:50Speaker 4: all the huddles and everything. He'd be leading the huddles,
- 12:52Speaker 4: all of that, Bro, he be doing most of all
- 12:54Speaker 4: the talking keeping everybody mind right and letting everybody know
- 12:57Speaker 4: the standard and the goals. He'll be him. I don't
- 12:59Speaker 4: be saying that I be letting him do his thing.
- 13:02Speaker 3: I feel like, in a sense I want to say,
- 13:08Speaker 3: it's like Yin and yang, like you pick up where
- 13:11Speaker 3: the other persons like it's putting down almost you know
- 13:13Speaker 3: what I'm saying, or it's lacking, not lacking, but you
- 13:15Speaker 3: know what I'm saying. Where in the sense like he
- 13:20Speaker 3: he mad social, like he's a social butterfly.
- 13:23Speaker 2: Like respect respectfully.
- 13:27Speaker 3: I feel like I can be when I need to be,
- 13:29Speaker 3: but I don't really like shoot to be. You know
- 13:30Speaker 3: what I'm saying, Like if I'm out, If I'm out,
- 13:32Speaker 3: I don't feel like I'm about to shoot a conversation
- 13:34Speaker 3: with somebody off rip, but he might.
- 13:37Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying, I feel like could talk
- 13:38Speaker 1: to anybody anything, find something in common with that person.
- 13:43Speaker 3: He got that that's that's must respect me, that's going
- 13:48Speaker 3: to like. That's why I say he picked up where
- 13:50Speaker 3: like I might I might miss, or like I might
- 13:53Speaker 3: pick up where he might miss in any aspect, And
- 13:55Speaker 3: I feel like that's what that's what helped us the
- 13:58Speaker 3: most be like be connected.
- 14:00Speaker 2: Do you guys sit here and laugh? Sometimes it's just
- 14:03Speaker 2: like how.
- 14:06Speaker 1: Tight you've become in the short amount of time that
- 14:08Speaker 1: he's been here.
- 14:09Speaker 2: I mean, Rustuill, you've it's been just a year.
- 14:11Speaker 1: Yeah, just over a year, and I feel like from
- 14:15Speaker 1: the outside looking in, you guys seem like you've played
- 14:18Speaker 1: together for five years.
- 14:20Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 14:20Speaker 4: Now we definitely Even everybody said like like and and
- 14:23Speaker 4: all of them comeing to them like, yo, y'all do
- 14:24Speaker 4: that every day or for the games, y'all always pray together,
- 14:27Speaker 4: y'all I'll be like, yeah, bro, Like, we got a
- 14:29Speaker 4: little routine that we do, and we do it every day.
- 14:32Speaker 4: We stay on the field every day at the practice
- 14:34Speaker 4: for like thirty forty five minutes sometimes and go through
- 14:37Speaker 4: what we need to go through that we feel like
- 14:38Speaker 4: we're gonna get in a game. That's every day. We
- 14:41Speaker 4: pray together before every game. We talk to each other
- 14:44Speaker 4: before were about to go into all the team periods,
- 14:46Speaker 4: just to keep our mind clear. So we just got
- 14:48Speaker 4: our own routine and how we do it. But man,
- 14:50Speaker 4: even in the offseason when we wasn't here, we was
- 14:52Speaker 4: calling each other all the time that what you want,
- 14:54Speaker 4: what you doing with you out there all I'm gonna
- 14:55Speaker 4: come out there, you come out here, and that just
- 14:57Speaker 4: we just built the bond like that.
- 14:59Speaker 1: Do you feel like Christian because you spend the time
- 15:01Speaker 1: after practice, because He's spend the time after meetings going
- 15:05Speaker 1: through things, mapping out this could happen on Sunday, this
- 15:09Speaker 1: might happen. Does that help you come game time to
- 15:12Speaker 1: anticipate and know I need to be on my p's
- 15:15Speaker 1: and q's here or I need to expect this there
- 15:18Speaker 1: because you guys spent that extra time to go through things.
- 15:21Speaker 3: Yeah, because you got When you feel prepared, it helps
- 15:26Speaker 3: on the field. Like when game time come, it's almost
- 15:28Speaker 3: like days of woos sometimes and obviously sometimes they're gonna
- 15:31Speaker 3: come out with different things when y'all communicate and talk,
- 15:33Speaker 3: you know how, like he said earlier, like you know.
- 15:35Speaker 5: How he played, I know what he might like.
- 15:38Speaker 3: Well, he might choose like nah, I don't want to
- 15:39Speaker 3: play like that, or he might want to play like that.
- 15:41Speaker 3: So when game time come, we're going to prepare all
- 15:43Speaker 3: this week talking about the film, talking about doing releases
- 15:48Speaker 3: or anything like that, top of the route, anything like that.
- 15:51Speaker 3: So game time come, it's like all right, boom, you
- 15:53Speaker 3: see something different. It's not like a we about to
- 15:55Speaker 3: freeze up. We already know what's up, like we know how,
- 15:58Speaker 3: we know how we each other are, and it's easy,
- 16:00Speaker 3: it's easy to execute when we prepare and take those
- 16:03Speaker 3: times off the field outside, outside, being with the coaches,
- 16:06Speaker 3: watching films together and hearing each other's mindset, picking each
- 16:09Speaker 3: other's minds.
- 16:10Speaker 2: So game day fashion, do you guys have the same fashion? Suns? Different?

- 16:21Speaker 4: I'd be matching it up. I'll be mixing it up.
- 16:24Speaker 4: I think one time we came in here like each
- 16:25Speaker 4: other once. That was the home one home game? Was that?
- 16:27Speaker 4: Was that Tennessee? The game you ain't cause you ain't wait?
- 16:30Speaker 4: Did you that you're talking Tennessee when we had the
- 16:33Speaker 4: low the low shoes on the black loafers. Yeah, but
- 16:36Speaker 4: that was like one time with the cow we had
- 16:37Speaker 4: the collar shirt on cause I had to sweater and
- 16:40Speaker 4: I had to overall sweater on. You did too, white
- 16:43Speaker 4: and black. I wasn't saying see, I was recenting time flies.
- 16:50Speaker 4: I wore the Loafers what it was a home game.
- 16:54Speaker 4: It was you know what I'm talking about.

- 17:33Speaker 3: that like put it, put it on, and everybody everybody
- 17:38Speaker 3: got their own style. So it just depends on like
- 17:40Speaker 3: what you what you like, what you like, you like casual,
- 17:43Speaker 3: do you like street?
- 17:44Speaker 4: Where? Do you like sweat pants? Like whatever? Whatever you like?

- 18:50Speaker 4: walking around like his lunch. Yeah, just be walking around
- 18:54Speaker 4: like what you're doing. But he'd be like nothing. But
- 18:57Speaker 4: then I see him be like sixteen laps outside like
- 19:00Speaker 4: I don't know, he just ran, Yeah, and just start
- 19:02Speaker 4: running out of nowhere, like you look at him too long.
