- 0:29Speaker 2: Mini camp wrap up show. I'm Fred Evans here do
- 0:33Speaker 2: so we'll be bye later. Paul's out golfing, but we'll
- 0:37Speaker 2: be here for about the next hour or so talk
- 0:40Speaker 2: about what we saw. And uh, I think we're gonna
- 0:43Speaker 2: throw it to Drake when he starts talking.
- 0:45Speaker 1: Drake, may, are we gonna do that?
- 0:47Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 0:47Speaker 1: I'm looking at Matt. No, we're not gonna do that.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Okay, so you'll catch that later on Patriots dot com.
- 0:54Speaker 1: But I would say high energy. Would you agree?
- 0:57Speaker 6: It's a fun practice. Yeah, it's a fun practice for
- 1:00Speaker 6: this time of year. And I was saying to you earlier,
- 1:02Speaker 6: I don't know what it all means. I don't know
- 1:04Speaker 6: if it means anything about, you know, how many games
- 1:06Speaker 6: they're gonna win or anything like that. But fun and
- 1:08Speaker 6: competitive are the two words I would use. There's an
- 1:11Speaker 6: energy of offense makes a play, defense makes a play,
- 1:15Speaker 6: and iron sharpening iron and all that good stuff that
- 1:18Speaker 6: I don't know if we had that in the last
- 1:20Speaker 6: couple of years. It's like more like the defense made
- 1:23Speaker 6: five good plays to every one offensive play, right, and
- 1:26Speaker 6: now it's a little bit more. Even so, it's it's
- 1:27Speaker 6: good to see another really sharp day. I thought for
- 1:30Speaker 6: Drake may I thought he looks better and better with
- 1:32Speaker 6: each practice.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean what I saw on eleven on eleven's
- 1:35Speaker 2: things look smooth. They looked in rhythm, and we're not
- 1:38Speaker 2: just talking about little dump off passes. We're talking about
- 1:41Speaker 2: you know, you know, ten twelve yard passes down the
- 1:45Speaker 2: middle of the field, a lot of in cuts and
- 1:48Speaker 2: you know I saw Hunter Henry caught a nice ball
- 1:51Speaker 2: and stride.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Kyle Williams might have had the play of the day.
- 1:54Speaker 6: Yeah, Yeah, that was That was the best one of
- 1:57Speaker 6: the day. It was from Josh Dobbs and just ran
- 1:59Speaker 6: right up the the middle of the field between the
- 2:01Speaker 6: two safeties and looked like ye had the linebacker is
- 2:04Speaker 6: trying to stay underneath him, that the safety's over the top,
- 2:07Speaker 6: and he just ran right through the entire defense for
- 2:09Speaker 6: about a forty yard bomb, So that's what you want
- 2:11Speaker 6: to see from him.
- 2:12Speaker 1: Yeah, he just definitely beat the coverage and I was like,
- 2:14Speaker 1: who's eighteen u s. Kyle went yeah, good, yeah, good, Yeah,
- 2:18Speaker 1: I'm glad.
- 2:19Speaker 6: Yeah. And then Treyvon Henderson had a touchdown in the
- 2:21Speaker 6: low red zone work that they were doing towards the
- 2:24Speaker 6: end of practice, a little angle route on a linebacker.
- 2:26Speaker 6: So both rookies. We were looking the part today, so
- 2:29Speaker 6: that was good to see. And I thought Will Campbell
- 2:31Speaker 6: had some reps against Keon White where he held his own.
- 2:34Speaker 6: So just in general, a good day for the offense.
- 2:37Speaker 6: And there haven't been a lot of times that we
- 2:39Speaker 6: can come on the show right after practice and say
- 2:41Speaker 6: good day for the offense. So we're moving in the
- 2:43Speaker 6: right direction on that side of the ball.
- 2:45Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:45Speaker 2: So they were out there for what about ninety minutes
- 2:47Speaker 2: or so? Yeah, yeah, and like we said, I sense,
- 2:52Speaker 2: you know, really positive energy. Rabel was out there like
- 2:55Speaker 2: he always is, bouncing around. You know, you definitely hear
- 2:59Speaker 2: him almost after every play in eleven eleven saying something.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Josh McDaniels is his usual self.
- 3:06Speaker 2: So just a lot of good energy out there a
- 3:09Speaker 2: lot of positive plays and you know the defense did
- 3:11Speaker 2: well too.
- 3:12Speaker 6: Yeah, they had some moments as well, and Carlon Davis
- 3:15Speaker 6: had a pass breakup. I thought early on in practice
- 3:17Speaker 6: there was a decent amount of pressure on the quarterback.
- 3:20Speaker 6: They seem to clean that up a little bit offensively
- 3:23Speaker 6: as practice went on, but you still see, you know,
- 3:25Speaker 6: Milton Williams, Christian Barmore, those two guys especially were giving
- 3:29Speaker 6: them some problems early on. There was another one where
- 3:32Speaker 6: it looked like an assignment issue. Jabrill Peppers just came
- 3:34Speaker 6: in unblocked on the Bulleitz. Things like that that they
- 3:37Speaker 6: were still working on early on in practice. Jotted down
- 3:40Speaker 6: a few stacks and their quotes that maybe it looked
- 3:44Speaker 6: like there was enough pressure on the quarterback there. But
- 3:47Speaker 6: in general, I think this offense is the ball is
- 3:50Speaker 6: starting to come out on time. The rhythm of the offense,
- 3:52Speaker 6: Drake may looks a little bit more comfortable than what
- 3:55Speaker 6: we saw at the beginning of the spring. So they're
- 3:57Speaker 6: starting to at least be able to hold their own
- 3:59Speaker 6: against a good And.
- 4:00Speaker 2: I'm sure you're wondering, you know, with Stefan Diggs there, Yes,
- 4:03Speaker 2: he was taking part in positional drills, not taking part
- 4:06Speaker 2: in the team drills yet, he's not quite ready. I
- 4:09Speaker 2: looking at his right leg, it's not it's I don't
- 4:12Speaker 2: see you know, I'm not a doctor, Yeah, but I
- 4:15Speaker 2: don't see full extension. And definitely the muscles aren't where
- 4:18Speaker 2: the left one is yet. So he's not ready to,
- 4:21Speaker 2: you know, fully participate. But he's out there and he's
- 4:24Speaker 2: looking good.
- 4:25Speaker 6: Yeah, And I think the encouraging part from a mental
- 4:28Speaker 6: rep standpoint is when they go into those walkthroughs, he
- 4:30Speaker 6: is participating in the walkthroughs, so they're getting him up
- 4:35Speaker 6: to speed in terms of what they're running from the
- 4:37Speaker 6: playbook perspective. So hopefully that means that once he is
- 4:40Speaker 6: cleared medically and is one hundred percent healthy and he
- 4:43Speaker 6: gets thrown into the team drill portion, he's not behind
- 4:47Speaker 6: from that perspective of knowing the playbook and knowing the
- 4:49Speaker 6: routes he's going to be running and all that kind
- 4:52Speaker 6: of stuff. So they did enough of that over these
- 4:54Speaker 6: last couple of practices that he's been there, whether it's
- 4:57Speaker 6: eleven one to eleven's in the middle of the field
- 4:59Speaker 6: walkthroughs or red zone work today, routes against air he's
- 5:02Speaker 6: still out there participating in those things, so hopefully he
- 5:06Speaker 6: can hit the ground running.
- 5:07Speaker 7: Large media contingent today, I would say, nice media contention.
- 5:11Speaker 1: It was a cool day.
- 5:13Speaker 2: You know, it wasn't particularly warm, so perfect day for
- 5:15Speaker 2: practice for players standpoint a lot of you know, overcast,
- 5:20Speaker 2: so that not a lot of sun, but no rain
- 5:23Speaker 2: and you know, i'd say around sixty degrees or so,
- 5:26Speaker 2: so it was just a perfect day for guys to
- 5:28Speaker 2: get out there and ball.
- 5:31Speaker 6: As you would say, it kind of felt like that, honestly,
- 5:34Speaker 6: like watching those red zone periods towards the end of
- 5:37Speaker 6: practice that were competitive live periods like that was fun
- 5:41Speaker 6: like that that had some juice and there had some
- 5:43Speaker 6: energy there and some back and forth the guys chirping
- 5:46Speaker 6: guys and things like that, and that's what you want
- 5:49Speaker 6: to see. I think. You know, the sequence land larising
- 5:51Speaker 6: on the wheel route, you know, over the shoulder from
- 5:54Speaker 6: Josh Dobbs, followed right by the pick six from Isaiah Bolden.
- 5:57Speaker 6: So the offense had a moment to sell break and
- 6:00Speaker 6: the defense at a moment to give it back to
- 6:02Speaker 6: the offense. And this time of year, that's just what
- 6:05Speaker 6: seaking of.
- 6:05Speaker 1: Juice, I mean, what's going on.
- 6:08Speaker 3: Not much practice is great.
- 6:16Speaker 4: I'm in a weird position because I haven't talked to
- 6:17Speaker 4: anyone about this practice yet, so I feel a little
- 6:19Speaker 4: bit weird, like watching the competitive piers for its probably
- 6:22Speaker 4: just jump in without I thought it was a good
- 6:25Speaker 4: I thought it was a good day for Drake May.
- 6:26Speaker 3: I don't know if anyone else has said that yet.
- 6:28Speaker 1: Ye completed a lot of passes.
- 6:30Speaker 4: I just I wasn't There were times when I'm just wondering, like,
- 6:33Speaker 4: is the pass rush kind of turning it off after
- 6:34Speaker 4: a second here or what like.
- 6:36Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 6:36Speaker 4: Some of the periods to me just didn't seem as
- 6:38Speaker 4: competitive as I thought they've been in the past, perhaps
- 6:41Speaker 4: with just the pass rush stuff. But uh, I just
- 6:44Speaker 4: thought for him, great day overall. He just looked brilliant command.
- 6:47Speaker 4: It looked like a continuation of of OTAs UH continues
- 6:51Speaker 4: to progress, and that was a big thing we talked
- 6:52Speaker 4: about on the pregame show of you know, is he
- 6:55Speaker 4: going to continue to take those steps? So I thought
- 6:56Speaker 4: it was a great day for him. Throughout the day, though,
- 6:58Speaker 4: I think was was it was Josh Dobbs to Kyle
- 7:02Speaker 4: Williams down the field. I don't know you were off top, Evan.
- 7:04Speaker 4: How far was I like fifty yards forty?
- 7:06Speaker 1: Yeah, it was, it was.
- 7:07Speaker 2: It was a bomb. It was a really nice throw.
- 7:09Speaker 2: The good thing about it, he's just split the d
- 7:10Speaker 2: and just beat them. It was he just flat out.
- 7:12Speaker 1: Yeah, that was pretty.
- 7:14Speaker 3: It was pretty play.
- 7:14Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 7:15Speaker 3: That probably play of the day overall. But you know,
- 7:17Speaker 3: just a lot of consistency from Drake.
- 7:19Speaker 8: Uh.
- 7:20Speaker 4: One other question I had for you have is, uh,
- 7:22Speaker 4: it was his last red zone period. I think somebody
- 7:24Speaker 4: caught one along the back line of the end zone.
- 7:26Speaker 6: Is Kendrick Borne was born again? Yeah, that's who it was.
- 7:28Speaker 3: I just couldn't quite.
- 7:29Speaker 6: See that was an incomplete in mind.
- 7:30Speaker 4: No, Yeah, because I knew there was some debate about
- 7:32Speaker 4: that one. I was like at the weird angle.
- 7:34Speaker 6: It was also late, so I just thought it was
- 7:36Speaker 6: kind of a win for the defense. Rep. Yeah, put
- 7:39Speaker 6: it that way.
- 7:39Speaker 4: Otherwise, I mean the you know, they were in the
- 7:41Speaker 4: mid zone, mid midfield a little bit. It seemed like, yeah,
- 7:44Speaker 4: maybe one throwaway. Otherwise it was he was on. I
- 7:46Speaker 4: mean he was finding guys three nine, eighty four, eighty
- 7:49Speaker 4: five three.
- 7:50Speaker 1: Again, good day, good day for Drake.
- 7:52Speaker 4: I think it was encouraging to see him continue to
- 7:54Speaker 4: progress some looking command of the team.
- 7:56Speaker 6: Yeah, there was a throw early on in practice to
- 7:59Speaker 6: Kaishan Booty is a nine stop you know, run down
- 8:02Speaker 6: the field nine steps stop on the dime, and Drake
- 8:05Speaker 6: may threw it on like the sixth step instead of
- 8:08Speaker 6: the ninth step and Booty turned around and the ball
- 8:10Speaker 6: was just right on him. And those are the types
- 8:12Speaker 6: of you know, the timing anticipation of the throws that
- 8:16Speaker 6: you want to see from from Drake that I thought
- 8:19Speaker 6: was is getting better and better with every spring practice
- 8:22Speaker 6: that we have seen from him. So I love anticipatory
- 8:25Speaker 6: throws like that where he throws it before the guy's
- 8:27Speaker 6: breaking And that's another one of those we were talking
- 8:30Speaker 6: about on the show before you know, where it adjusts
- 8:33Speaker 6: based off the coverage, so both guys got to be
- 8:35Speaker 6: on the same page. You got to adjust it properly.
- 8:37Speaker 6: And that was a good looking throw.
- 8:39Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean on time, that's what I sens like.
- 8:41Speaker 2: There wasn't a lot of you know, bringing the ball
- 8:44Speaker 2: down and you know where you know, we wouldn't have
- 8:47Speaker 2: that much time in a real situation and we could
- 8:49Speaker 2: just see, Hey, the right because joining us Jalen Hawking.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Have a scene, join us just off the practice field.
- 9:01Speaker 1: Jalen Hawkins joining Patriots unfiltered. Jalen, it's Mike yourself, Frank
- 9:05Speaker 1: kersh Evan Lazar.
- 9:07Speaker 5: I guys doing good.
- 9:08Speaker 1: Thanks for joining us.
- 9:10Speaker 5: Appreciate all.
- 9:11Speaker 1: So how was today for you?
- 9:12Speaker 9: Today was cool man? Good practice? You know, the offense
- 9:15Speaker 9: was doing anything today came lie. Defense did well, we
- 9:18Speaker 9: got the ball, we got to turnover. We executed some things.
- 9:22Speaker 9: We're learning still. So overall, you know, it's always good
- 9:24Speaker 9: to just get reps and connect with the guys and
- 9:27Speaker 9: get the chemistry and you know, get the understanding of
- 9:30Speaker 9: what we're doing and what we're trying to see.
- 9:31Speaker 2: Yeah, we were saying before you got in that you
- 9:33Speaker 2: know we were out there too, and we just sense
- 9:35Speaker 2: a lot of positive energy, like you know, upbeat positive energy.
- 9:40Speaker 9: You agree with that, Yeah, for sure. You know, every
- 9:42Speaker 9: day we out there trying to get better. We out
- 9:43Speaker 9: there on the mission. We're out there playing together. No
- 9:47Speaker 9: matter who's in we all just helping each other out,
- 9:49Speaker 9: embracing each other, embracing each other's rooms, you know, and
- 9:52Speaker 9: just connecting. You know, that was one of the big
- 9:54Speaker 9: emphasis in the beginning of this ots was to connect,
- 9:56Speaker 9: you know, and I feel like we're doing that and
- 9:58Speaker 9: we're working to tours some special.
- 10:01Speaker 4: How does it feel to be able to come back
- 10:02Speaker 4: to New England? You're here last year, but a bunch
- 10:04Speaker 4: came back.
- 10:04Speaker 5: Yeah, it feels good.
- 10:05Speaker 9: You know, I'm happy to be, you know, with the
- 10:07Speaker 9: guys man with some of the guys I played with
- 10:09Speaker 9: last year, and with the new guys and the new
- 10:11Speaker 9: staff and everybody knows it's a good spot, good area.
- 10:14Speaker 5: I enjoyed it last year, so it's a blessing to
- 10:16Speaker 5: be back.
- 10:17Speaker 3: Just what has the adjustment been like from the two defenses?
- 10:19Speaker 3: I mean, we're not getting too much detail, but I
- 10:21Speaker 3: can't get.
- 10:21Speaker 9: Answer, you know, but just you know, we're working towards
- 10:25Speaker 9: you know, our goals and you know, like I said,
- 10:27Speaker 9: we're trying to connect, train and learn and get understanding.
- 10:30Speaker 5: So it's been good.
- 10:32Speaker 6: I know you can't get into details, but just general anyway,
- 10:36Speaker 6: I'm gonna try generally speaking, you know, is it the
- 10:39Speaker 6: same different? Like how different is it truly? For your position? Specifically?
- 10:43Speaker 6: You know, playing at safety?
- 10:46Speaker 5: Safety is safety?
- 10:49Speaker 9: You know, like I said, we're already just trying to connect,
- 10:51Speaker 9: train and learn and we're embracing each other and we're
- 10:55Speaker 9: all just you know, learning together. So that's just the
- 10:58Speaker 9: biggest thing. And we're trying to just get better, that's it,
- 11:00Speaker 9: and win today. How about coach Frabo? His style, good
- 11:04Speaker 9: coach man. Love what he's doing, Love the culture he's
- 11:08Speaker 9: bringing to this team. Like I said, the connecting part
- 11:11Speaker 9: is so big. We're playing for one of another, playing
- 11:14Speaker 9: for our coaches, playing for our team. We're all close.
- 11:16Speaker 9: We're all tight knit and together, and that's that's a
- 11:19Speaker 9: big deal.
- 11:20Speaker 5: You know. Those those things add up and help.
- 11:22Speaker 1: You know.
- 11:23Speaker 9: We also work hard, man, and everything we do we
- 11:26Speaker 9: try to finish, you know, from running to place to everything.
- 11:31Speaker 5: It's finished, you know, So it's good.
- 11:33Speaker 3: What do you say about the safety room. You've guys
- 11:35Speaker 3: got such a wide array of vets.
- 11:37Speaker 4: You've got a rookie, you've got you know, a free
- 11:40Speaker 4: veteran free agent came in with it with apps.
- 11:42Speaker 1: I mean, del Pattis had a good year last year.
- 11:43Speaker 1: What's that room like.
- 11:45Speaker 5: Man, it's a good room.
- 11:46Speaker 8: Man.
- 11:47Speaker 9: We're all we all embrace each other, man, and we
- 11:49Speaker 9: all learn from each other. We all help each other out, man,
- 11:52Speaker 9: because you know, we need everybody and and I'm like
- 11:55Speaker 9: having a close knit room you can learn from and
- 11:57Speaker 9: go out there and compete with every day. You know,
- 11:59Speaker 9: it only makes you better, makes the other for your
- 12:01Speaker 9: teammate better, and it just helps your game overall.
- 12:04Speaker 5: Man.
- 12:05Speaker 9: And it's just good to have, man, because every day
- 12:08Speaker 9: is growth. Every day is something new. We all learn
- 12:10Speaker 9: it from. We all learned from each other.
- 12:11Speaker 4: Man.
- 12:12Speaker 5: And uh, coach book is doing this thing.
- 12:14Speaker 9: And you know, like I said, the goal is to
- 12:16Speaker 9: win the day and continuously strive to get better.
- 12:19Speaker 5: And that's that's that's what I feel like we're doing.
- 12:21Speaker 2: All right, forget about football for a second. Tell our
- 12:24Speaker 2: fans something they don't.
- 12:25Speaker 1: Know about you. About Jalen Hawkins, I.
- 12:28Speaker 4: Could tell you something after last summer, right right, Well, well,
- 12:32Speaker 4: I gotta tell quick story real quick. The last summer
- 12:34Speaker 4: I thought, you know, James having a good camp and
- 12:36Speaker 4: I'm like, I want to go talk to him, roll
- 12:37Speaker 4: a little piece on him. Then we had a day
- 12:39Speaker 4: off and I'm down at our spot Cape Cod, you know,
- 12:42Speaker 4: having a lobsterle by family.
- 12:43Speaker 3: And then I look, I'm like, it's freaking jaling luck.
- 12:46Speaker 1: It's walking intout Like if all the spots.
- 12:47Speaker 3: In Cape cod he found.
- 12:49Speaker 4: I think your girl found it though, right the number
- 12:51Speaker 4: one lobster role plays, so I don't know plays.
- 12:53Speaker 6: He was very excited.
- 12:55Speaker 5: I I'm not seeing my dude. I'm like.
- 13:00Speaker 1: King, like the spot, like the Cape.
- 13:03Speaker 9: I love the cave man, I love the beats. I'm
- 13:05Speaker 9: West coast baby, Okay, water, you know, I love the water.
- 13:08Speaker 9: I love being on the coast. So you know, I'm
- 13:10Speaker 9: glad that they're somewhere out here I can go to.
- 13:13Speaker 9: It's very therapeutic for me. So that's something I do
- 13:15Speaker 9: from time to time if I can, whenever I have
- 13:18Speaker 9: the availability.
- 13:18Speaker 2: Okay, Yeah, I drive up from the Cape every day.
- 13:22Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I make the trip every day.
- 13:24Speaker 5: Nice, I do area.
- 13:26Speaker 1: So okay, so you like the Cape, I guess. But
- 13:29Speaker 1: what else?
- 13:29Speaker 2: What something that fans you want fans to know about
- 13:32Speaker 2: you that they wouldn't know.
- 13:33Speaker 1: From you know, maybe reading the media guide.
- 13:35Speaker 5: M I'm a creative, yeah, you know, from close to.
- 13:42Speaker 9: Home interior stuff too, making beats, yeah, you know that's
- 13:50Speaker 9: I'm into all that stuff.
- 13:51Speaker 1: If you got together with Marcus, I ain't with Marcus.
- 13:54Speaker 9: I ain't going with Marcus or you know, it is
- 13:57Speaker 9: very talented to leave on my boy, pad, I ain't
- 14:01Speaker 9: got none of them yet, but that would be cool.
- 14:03Speaker 9: That would be something, you know, one of these times
- 14:06Speaker 9: on a free camp if we have a free day
- 14:08Speaker 9: or something like that, you know, we can connect on that.
- 14:10Speaker 9: But okay, that's something I'm very interested and I'm a
- 14:12Speaker 9: big travel guy for sure.
- 14:14Speaker 1: Okay, what's your favorite place to go.
- 14:17Speaker 5: As of right now? M M.
- 14:19Speaker 9: I love Japan just of just you know, if I
- 14:23Speaker 9: want to go to the city, I'll go to Japan.
- 14:25Speaker 9: I love Japan. Fire wow.
- 14:28Speaker 5: If I want to go to the beach or something
- 14:29Speaker 5: like that and vibe Brazil.
- 14:33Speaker 1: Okay, so you do travel? Sounds like my travel is
- 14:37Speaker 1: like to the hardware store.
- 14:40Speaker 6: Maybe playing a game in Brazil someday.
- 14:42Speaker 1: You know.
- 14:44Speaker 5: I know that we have Patriots Brazil my correct.
- 14:47Speaker 1: Yeah, that's one of our home markets. Nice.
- 14:49Speaker 3: Yeah, beach probably.
- 14:53Speaker 1: Focus your You're Panamanian.
- 14:57Speaker 9: Panamanian, half Panamanian, and I'm half African American can Yeah,
- 15:01Speaker 9: so yeah, that's that's. My mom's side is Panamanian. Also
- 15:06Speaker 9: my grandfather he's Panamanian and Cuban. My grandma is full
- 15:08Speaker 9: of Panamanian.
- 15:09Speaker 1: Okay, cool.
- 15:10Speaker 5: So I don't speak no Spanish though, trying to get better.
- 15:15Speaker 2: And you know, yeah, I hear that. So what's your
- 15:19Speaker 2: plans once mini camp goes? You have anything planned? You're
- 15:22Speaker 2: gonna go do any traveling between now and training camp?
- 15:24Speaker 9: Actually wednesday, I'm going for a few days on my
- 15:26Speaker 9: honeymoon with my wife.
- 15:28Speaker 5: Yeah that's right, we just got married.
- 15:30Speaker 1: Still saw that on I g Yeah, So go down there.
- 15:34Speaker 9: With her, Go down to south of France with her
- 15:37Speaker 9: actually for a couple of days, come back and train
- 15:42Speaker 9: and get ready for camp.
- 15:43Speaker 1: All right, you're racking up those miles.
- 15:45Speaker 9: Man, I'm racking up my mom's my points there you go.
- 15:48Speaker 9: You know those cars, all those cars, I got benefits
- 15:51Speaker 9: I got you know.
- 15:53Speaker 2: All right, Well, listen, we really appreciate you coming by.
- 15:56Speaker 2: I know you've got other stuff to do today, but
- 15:58Speaker 2: I appreciate anytime you want to come.
- 15:59Speaker 1: This is where we are.
- 16:00Speaker 5: Okay, sure, I appreciate you, guys, man coming by.
- 16:07Speaker 2: And if you need any Cape Cod recommendation the guys, yeah, okay,
- 16:13Speaker 2: all right. Jalen Hawkins stopping it.
- 16:15Speaker 6: There you go. Yeah, that's your neck of the woods.
- 16:17Speaker 1: That's right.
- 16:18Speaker 5: I know.
- 16:18Speaker 3: It's so funny.
- 16:19Speaker 1: I mean, like, so he was down at the Suet.
- 16:21Speaker 3: Harbor, Suet Harvard right at the old Lobster Roll place.
- 16:23Speaker 4: I mean it was like you know, and I literally like,
- 16:25Speaker 4: you know, you guys know me, like I picked my
- 16:26Speaker 4: spots with interviews with some of these guys and hey,
- 16:31Speaker 4: but it was like I think that's him, you know,
- 16:33Speaker 4: walk over with the kids and stock and hockey lough.
- 16:35Speaker 4: He was great and you know, just always gives you
- 16:38Speaker 4: an end to talk to these guys. You go in
- 16:39Speaker 4: the locker room like, hey man, I was the loss
- 16:41Speaker 4: Arl you know that kind of stuff. But active day
- 16:43Speaker 4: for him though, Kyle Dugger, he was out there a lot.
- 16:45Speaker 4: He was getting a lot of work. So, uh, busy guy.
- 16:48Speaker 4: Busy guy today for sure.
- 16:49Speaker 5: On the field.
- 16:49Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 16:50Speaker 2: So I mean there was one season I think in
- 16:52Speaker 2: Atlanta where I think he started every game.
- 16:55Speaker 6: Yeah. Yeah, he played a lot for the Falcons two
- 16:57Speaker 6: years ago before the Patriots signed him in free agency
- 17:00Speaker 6: last offseason. So another one of those guys that maybe
- 17:03Speaker 6: can play a little bit of free safety, a little
- 17:04Speaker 6: bit of deep safety and free up you know Peppers
- 17:07Speaker 6: and Dugger and let those guys do their things. So
- 17:10Speaker 6: another content guy though for another creative Yeah, another one
- 17:13Speaker 6: of those.
- 17:13Speaker 3: Yeah, I didn't know Peppers was into music too. They
- 17:16Speaker 3: dropped out on that then.
- 17:17Speaker 5: I don't know, a.
- 17:18Speaker 2: Little collaboration should get a little competition with the guys,
- 17:22Speaker 2: have a music showing in like a wrap off or something.
- 17:29Speaker 2: All right, right now, uh May is talking, So you'll
- 17:33Speaker 2: we'll have all of that on Patriots dot com, so
- 17:36Speaker 2: you won't you won't miss anything. We'll have the full
- 17:39Speaker 2: uh interview press conference up on Patriots dot com as
- 17:43Speaker 2: soon as it's over all. Right, eight five to five
- 17:45Speaker 2: past five hundred is the hotline, Mike. We were before
- 17:49Speaker 2: Jalen came in. You were kind of filling us in
- 17:51Speaker 2: with some of your observations.
- 17:53Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I just uh, I don't know.
- 17:56Speaker 4: I mean, brock Lampy get some action, a little bit
- 17:59Speaker 4: of action in the red zone.
- 18:00Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean, if they, like I said earlier, if
- 18:02Speaker 6: they're gonna call on a true full back, like he's
- 18:05Speaker 6: the only one here right, nobody else has Philip plays
- 18:08Speaker 6: that role. And it's kind of like you know, when
- 18:12Speaker 6: ye as a lacrosse player, and like it's like goalie, right,
- 18:14Speaker 6: like you only have one or two of them, right, So,
- 18:16Speaker 6: like every time they call out the package for the
- 18:19Speaker 6: full back, it's like there's only one guy that can run,
- 18:22Speaker 6: so it's you know, if they're gonna have it, then
- 18:24Speaker 6: it's gonna be him. Probably.
- 18:26Speaker 7: It's similar with Jack Westover again, it's just some opportunity reps.
- 18:29Speaker 1: You never know, like.
- 18:30Speaker 4: Sometimes they think the coaches just throw guys in there
- 18:32Speaker 4: to see, you know, if they can swim with the
- 18:34Speaker 4: big guys and look, don't look out of place. But
- 18:37Speaker 4: it just catches your eye when all of a sudden
- 18:39Speaker 4: there are guys like Jack Westover, brock Lampy, you know,
- 18:41Speaker 4: with all guys you've been seeing out there. So doesn't
- 18:44Speaker 4: mean that they're making a roster push or anything, but
- 18:47Speaker 4: at least they're on the radar and clearly the coaches
- 18:49Speaker 4: are taking notice of them and giving them some opportunities.
- 18:51Speaker 4: But interesting with all the receivers coming back Kendrick Bourne.
- 18:55Speaker 1: Nice day, you know, a bunch of catches stuff.
- 18:57Speaker 4: For that one.
- 18:57Speaker 3: I guess he was out of bounds.
- 18:58Speaker 4: It was tough for Michael because you know, the defensive
- 19:00Speaker 4: guys on the dline are all going, nope, nob he's out,
- 19:02Speaker 4: he's out.
- 19:03Speaker 3: And the offensive guys are spreading celebrating. So hard to tell.
- 19:06Speaker 4: But with those guys back in the mix a little bit.
- 19:08Speaker 4: Good to see him make some plays. Pop Douglass made
- 19:10Speaker 4: some plays, Hunter Henry made some plays. So it's just
- 19:13Speaker 4: you're starting to see the offenses starting to come together
- 19:17Speaker 4: a little bit, and it's just it's reassuring. I know
- 19:20Speaker 4: it was coming to this point, but anytime you get
- 19:22Speaker 4: out to that first ota and you saw some interceptions
- 19:24Speaker 4: from Drake, it's easy to overreact.
- 19:26Speaker 1: And be like, oh God, what are we doing?
- 19:28Speaker 3: We blow up the offense.
- 19:29Speaker 4: It kind of worked last year and this but I
- 19:31Speaker 4: think the signs are all pointed in the right direction
- 19:33Speaker 4: with Josh.
- 19:33Speaker 2: So we will be doing this again tomorrow practice. We'll
- 19:37Speaker 2: be out there at noon. Does Rabel have a press.
- 19:40Speaker 6: Conference again tomorrow?
- 19:41Speaker 2: I think okay, So he'll talk again at twelve fifteen.
- 19:43Speaker 2: Then we'll turn our cameras to the field and we'll
- 19:45Speaker 2: be up there until they tell us to turn our
- 19:48Speaker 2: cameras off. Then we'll watch practice and we'll come back
- 19:51Speaker 2: here in the studio at around two thirty and do another.
- 19:53Speaker 1: Wrap up show.
- 19:54Speaker 4: I thought it was pretty fun today, from which is
- 19:56Speaker 4: our perspective of doing the show this way. Sometimes it's
- 19:58Speaker 4: hard to talk and take things in at this same
- 20:00Speaker 4: time we talked through some of the early individual periods
- 20:04Speaker 4: and so it wasn't you were messing up. But then
- 20:05Speaker 4: for the team periods, we were able to get down
- 20:06Speaker 4: there and really take that stuff in, which I think
- 20:08Speaker 4: is we'll have to.
- 20:09Speaker 2: Come up with some storylines because we can't repeat what
- 20:11Speaker 2: we said today, so we'll come up with I wish
- 20:14Speaker 2: we could do the eleven on eleven, but I understand.
- 20:17Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, they don't want all that on film.
- 20:20Speaker 6: They don't want people like me seeing that on film.
- 20:24Speaker 3: You're breaking it down twenty five times now.
- 20:27Speaker 4: It's but yeah, I think as you watch more of
- 20:29Speaker 4: these Rabel practices, you start to see a little to
- 20:31Speaker 4: a little bit of the method to the madness. I
- 20:33Speaker 4: don't know, maybe if it's just me getting you know,
- 20:35Speaker 4: six or seventh year now actually watching every practice, but
- 20:38Speaker 4: you start to see, all right, they practice it in
- 20:40Speaker 4: the red zone, then they get together and they play
- 20:42Speaker 4: it in the red zone, and they practice in the midfield,
- 20:44Speaker 4: and then they get to you know, so you see
- 20:45Speaker 4: how everything fits together.
- 20:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean that's no different from a Belichick. Yeah
- 20:50Speaker 2: that's something you said. Maybe it's just me starting.
- 20:53Speaker 6: This is getting back to more I would say what
- 20:55Speaker 6: the rhythm of practice is similar to a Belichick practice,
- 20:58Speaker 6: whereas last year they had the West Coast coaches on
- 21:01Speaker 6: the offensive side and those guys just slow everything down
- 21:05Speaker 6: right where it's like play talk about it, play talk
- 21:10Speaker 6: about it, and like, you know, this practice is really
- 21:14Speaker 6: like everybody to the side. The coordinators are relaying the
- 21:17Speaker 6: plays through the headset and it's like a game and
- 21:19Speaker 6: we're just running plays.
- 21:21Speaker 1: And just keeping the speed up.
- 21:22Speaker 6: Yeah, it's not to say that there's that's the wrong
- 21:25Speaker 6: way to do it where you know last year, because
- 21:28Speaker 6: that's what a lot of those coaches do from that tree.
- 21:31Speaker 6: So it's not like it hasn't been successful, but there's
- 21:34Speaker 6: definitely a more volume and more pace to this type
- 21:37Speaker 6: of practice and what we saw last year.
- 21:39Speaker 2: It's like we'll talk about it after in the classroom.
- 21:41Speaker 2: Yeah right, all right, let's.
- 21:43Speaker 1: Go to the phone. Sean'son Vancouver. What's up, Sean, Yeah,
- 21:47Speaker 1: let me just pick up.
- 21:50Speaker 10: I just wanted to clarify the whole Wings thing of
- 21:54Speaker 10: the wings actually don't use drumsticks, those are really big.
- 21:58Speaker 10: They use drummet which are straight, so they get the
- 22:00Speaker 10: bunch get confused with the drumpsticks. Right, that's the thing.
- 22:03Speaker 10: It's not it's not actually leg it's it's part of
- 22:06Speaker 10: the wing, is.
- 22:06Speaker 1: The drum man, right, and they're attacked, right, they get separated.
- 22:10Speaker 10: Yeah, yeah, exactly one session I have about practice and
- 22:14Speaker 10: maybe he said I didn't hear. Did Carlton Davis participate today?
- 22:18Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 22:19Speaker 6: He did a pass break up?
- 22:20Speaker 10: Yeah, yep, he did o great, okay, terrific.
- 22:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 22:23Speaker 2: I think on Patriots dot com we had a nice
- 22:25Speaker 2: picture of he and Gonzo running down the field.
- 22:27Speaker 1: Together, so, uh cool. Yeah, that's going to be a
- 22:30Speaker 1: good duo.
- 22:31Speaker 6: Yeah, they had Hunter Henry tried to do one of
- 22:34Speaker 6: those sit on the goal line and just kind of
- 22:36Speaker 6: be big, and carl Davis got those long arms in
- 22:38Speaker 6: there and broke up the pass.
- 22:40Speaker 4: The length stands out to me seeing him in person,
- 22:42Speaker 4: once he gets you know, the pads on until you
- 22:44Speaker 4: get to this point a little bit of a sense
- 22:46Speaker 4: of the size of these guys.
- 22:47Speaker 1: Yeah, he's just he's a long dude. He's gonna make
- 22:49Speaker 1: a compliment.
- 22:50Speaker 2: Yeah, I know Polk didn't participate all in eleven eleven,
- 22:54Speaker 2: but he looks like you put on some good weight.
- 22:56Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 22:57Speaker 3: There are quite a few guys, I think they're looking
- 22:58Speaker 3: good shape.
- 22:59Speaker 4: I mean, Polk, it seems like he is maybe in
- 23:01Speaker 4: the middle of the rehab process because he's not quite
- 23:03Speaker 4: there for the live periods, but in the in like
- 23:05Speaker 4: the walk through stuff, he'll put it on a yellow
- 23:07Speaker 4: opinion and go. So he's not as far as way
- 23:09Speaker 4: as some of the guys like on when you he's
- 23:11Speaker 4: not really doing much. Kyle Duggar not doing much yet,
- 23:14Speaker 4: the rookie Jared Wilson, He's not really doing much right now.
- 23:19Speaker 4: So there's definitely some guys that are still working their
- 23:21Speaker 4: way back and that maybe exkews some of the reps
- 23:23Speaker 4: a little bit.
- 23:24Speaker 2: Barton Poland writes in should we be worried about the
- 23:27Speaker 2: DC situation with Terrell Williams having a health scare, being
- 23:31Speaker 2: absent from the team activities and only working remotely so far?
- 23:34Speaker 2: Do you think this is something we should be more
- 23:36Speaker 2: concerned about? It feels like the topic isn't getting much attention,
- 23:40Speaker 2: but a formation coordinator not being there for the first
- 23:43Speaker 2: few months seems pretty important to me.
- 23:45Speaker 6: It's a fair point. I mean, I don't know, the
- 23:48Speaker 6: word concern has a lot is heavy, but he has
- 23:53Speaker 6: a health thing and you never want to like be
- 23:56Speaker 6: alarmist about that, like he's got to take care of
- 23:58Speaker 6: his health, right, you know, that's some important thing, but
- 24:01Speaker 6: it's not nothing. You know, certainly that's not the setup
- 24:05Speaker 6: that they had in mind. And Zach Kerr's mostly qualified.
- 24:08Speaker 6: He has had some interviews in the past for defensive
- 24:12Speaker 6: coordinator positions, so it's not like he's totally unqualified to
- 24:16Speaker 6: be in that role. But everyone I think we're waiting
- 24:20Speaker 6: and seeing if Terrell Williams is going to come back. Yeah,
- 24:23Speaker 6: I think.
- 24:23Speaker 4: It's it's a little reassuring to know that he's coach
- 24:26Speaker 4: with at Kerr.
- 24:27Speaker 3: I think he's coach with cletmc millan.
- 24:29Speaker 4: As well, Scott Booker stuff, so they have experienced together.
- 24:33Speaker 3: So and I also you know that Terrell.
- 24:36Speaker 4: Williams is said he's been around, he's been on Zoom,
- 24:38Speaker 4: so I think the team is familiar with him.
- 24:41Speaker 3: I think it's good that.
- 24:42Speaker 4: They have guys that are experienced with him though, because
- 24:44Speaker 4: if this was a little bit of a Frankenstein staff
- 24:47Speaker 4: like it was last year, where you had a mix
- 24:49Speaker 4: of new and old, then if you wonder are they
- 24:51Speaker 4: delivering the same message. I still have confidence that they
- 24:54Speaker 4: are and I also just wonder if maybe a positive
- 24:58Speaker 4: for this is that the team's going to rally around
- 25:00Speaker 4: and when he does get here, there you know, they
- 25:01Speaker 4: know he's been dealing with something.
- 25:03Speaker 1: I wonder if he's going to come here having lost
- 25:05Speaker 1: a lot of weight.
- 25:07Speaker 6: Yeah, you know, yeah. I think the one big thing
- 25:09Speaker 6: to me with Williams isn't necessarily about them installing the
- 25:13Speaker 6: system and all that, because, like due said, all these
- 25:15Speaker 6: coaches have been in the system rables here, so he's
- 25:18Speaker 6: going to make sure the system gets installed properly. But
- 25:21Speaker 6: to my knowledge, Joe Williams doesn't have a ton of
- 25:23Speaker 6: play calling experience, and you know that he's going to
- 25:26Speaker 6: be the play caller that's the plan or the setup,
- 25:29Speaker 6: and so these practices kind of serve as practice for
- 25:33Speaker 6: the coaches too, and he gets in there and it's
- 25:36Speaker 6: a live practice. And Josh McDaniels is one of the
- 25:40Speaker 6: best play callers in the league. On the other side, like,
- 25:43Speaker 6: that's really good practice against McDaniels. To go up against
- 25:46Speaker 6: him and try to out you know, chess match and
- 25:48Speaker 6: out smart Josh McDaniels in some of these calls. That
- 25:52Speaker 6: is valuable. So in that respect, I think that's probably
- 25:55Speaker 6: the most important thing is you know, relaying the calls,
- 25:57Speaker 6: the communication and knowing how to you know, go up
- 26:01Speaker 6: against the coordinator like Josh, who's gonna mix it up
- 26:03Speaker 6: and give you different looks and things like that. So
- 26:06Speaker 6: it's tough. You can't really replicate that in any other way.
- 26:08Speaker 2: I would assume like he's getting the tape of practice
- 26:11Speaker 2: and yeah, you know, he's keeping up to speed at
- 26:13Speaker 2: least with what's going on for sure.
- 26:15Speaker 4: I think Evans is that that's probably the best point
- 26:18Speaker 4: of what you should be concerned about.
- 26:19Speaker 1: And small seat concerned.
- 26:21Speaker 4: Still plenty of time to catch up a couple of
- 26:23Speaker 4: sets of joint practices.
- 26:24Speaker 1: He'll get some experience.
- 26:25Speaker 4: But you know, even expanding upon that, it's hearing the
- 26:28Speaker 4: voice in your aid for the defenders and you know,
- 26:31Speaker 4: knowing the cadence of how they want things done. So
- 26:33Speaker 4: it's I'm not too worried about it. I think it's
- 26:35Speaker 4: things that can all be ironed out. It's just it's
- 26:37Speaker 4: just not ideal.
- 26:37Speaker 6: Yeah, and calling defense is different than calling offense, Like
- 26:40Speaker 6: calling defense is a lot I know easier. Honestly, frankly,
- 26:44Speaker 6: it's easy man, Like, Yeah, that's not there's only so
- 26:47Speaker 6: many defenses you can play, and it's very situational, like
- 26:51Speaker 6: we kind of play our base stuff on first and
- 26:53Speaker 6: second down, then you get after it on third down.
- 26:55Speaker 6: So like it's not like offense where you could be
- 26:58Speaker 6: having these like ten word calls and things like that.
- 27:01Speaker 6: It's it's much more streamlined than that.
- 27:03Speaker 2: Yeah, I think the more complicated thing on defense is
- 27:05Speaker 2: getting your groupings right, getting your subs right.
- 27:08Speaker 4: Yeah, I think that too, And I'm sure that Terrell Williams,
- 27:10Speaker 4: like I said, you know, it's hard to really get
- 27:12Speaker 4: a sense of these guys to see him in person.
- 27:13Speaker 1: It's probably killing him not to be able.
- 27:15Speaker 3: To see these guys on field and really get a.
- 27:17Speaker 1: Sense for how they're moving. You can watch the film.
- 27:19Speaker 3: But at the same time, there's something special.
- 27:21Speaker 4: About being there, feeling the vibe that these guys give
- 27:24Speaker 4: off when they play together.
- 27:25Speaker 6: Was it was it Boyer, one of the assistant coaches
- 27:28Speaker 6: the Patriots had over the years, was apparently the best
- 27:32Speaker 6: spotter of what the personnel the offense was running on
- 27:37Speaker 6: the field.
- 27:37Speaker 1: Maddy p said that, and it.
- 27:38Speaker 6: Was like he was automatic to get the defense in
- 27:41Speaker 6: the right personnel package, and usually that guy sits up
- 27:44Speaker 6: top in the in the sky booth and radios.
- 27:48Speaker 1: There's a skill to that. Yeah, there really is.
- 27:50Speaker 2: Yeah, let's go to Robert who was in Henderson, Nevada.
- 27:55Speaker 1: What's up, Robert?
- 27:57Speaker 8: Hello? So I was calling because listening to Jalen Hawkins
- 28:03Speaker 8: and Bred talking about Cape cod and it don the
- 28:07Speaker 8: question because I want to visit the Cape sometime in
- 28:11Speaker 8: the near future, and recommendations on where to go getting
- 28:17Speaker 8: there and if it's like a thing of you do
- 28:21Speaker 8: the Cape, Martha's Vineyard and Nantuck or is it just
- 28:25Speaker 8: kind of you do want it? What's kind of like?
- 28:28Speaker 1: I mean, it all just depends on how much time
- 28:31Speaker 1: you have.
- 28:32Speaker 2: I mean, if you have a lot of time, you know,
- 28:34Speaker 2: like two weeks, you know, you spend some time on
- 28:37Speaker 2: the Cape and then take the ferry over to Nantucket
- 28:40Speaker 2: and then visit Martha.
- 28:41Speaker 1: If you can do the whole thing, but you need
- 28:43Speaker 1: some time to do that, you know.
- 28:46Speaker 6: Yeah, I would say Nantucket's a day trip. You could
- 28:48Speaker 6: do Nantucket in the day. It's not as big as
- 28:50Speaker 6: Martha's Vineyard if you want to hit like all the
- 28:53Speaker 6: different little towns in Martha's Vineyard, you know, ob and
- 28:56Speaker 6: you know, like all those different places, and you probably
- 28:59Speaker 6: would need more time than one day, but Nantucket you
- 29:02Speaker 6: could definitely which.
- 29:03Speaker 1: One's the best. What do you like to do? Like, like,
- 29:07Speaker 1: you know.
- 29:07Speaker 8: I like the water, I like to be on the water.
- 29:09Speaker 8: I like to visit shops like Relax.
- 29:12Speaker 2: Okay, so so Martha's viny and I think it's it's bigger.
- 29:17Speaker 1: But if you stay on the.
- 29:18Speaker 2: Cape, you know, if you if you like waves and
- 29:23Speaker 2: stuff like that, you want to go on the south
- 29:24Speaker 2: side of the Cape.
- 29:25Speaker 1: Uh for those types of Uh.
- 29:27Speaker 2: If you don't care, then the north side is probably
- 29:30Speaker 2: more scenic, it's more historic. And if you like shopping
- 29:34Speaker 2: and eating, I would take a day where you go
- 29:37Speaker 2: all the way to the end of the Cape to
- 29:38Speaker 2: a place called Provincetown And there's a street there called
- 29:42Speaker 2: Commercial Street, and all it is is stores and restaurants
- 29:48Speaker 2: and the people watching is second to none.
- 29:50Speaker 1: It's it's a really cool place.
- 29:53Speaker 2: I would do that during the week not on a weekend, yeah,
- 29:57Speaker 2: because it'll get packed. But Province Town, not Providence Provincetown. Yeah,
- 30:02Speaker 2: it's all the way at the end of the Cape
- 30:04Speaker 2: and it's a really really cool place.
- 30:05Speaker 6: Yeah. You can definitely do the vineyard in the day
- 30:08Speaker 6: two and the ferry, we'll take you right into Oak Bluffs,
- 30:11Speaker 6: which has beach shop restaurant exactly what you're talking about.
- 30:16Speaker 6: But you know, Nantucket has like one town center, whereas
- 30:20Speaker 6: the Vineyard had like three or four different little pockets
- 30:23Speaker 6: of centers. And so it just depends on what you're
- 30:25Speaker 6: looking for.
- 30:26Speaker 4: Nantucket you can probably do without. I mean, it's kind
- 30:28Speaker 4: of a very special thing. And I mean, personally I
- 30:30Speaker 4: love the cape. I found like Martha's Vineyard is Martha's Vineyard.
- 30:33Speaker 4: But at the end of the day, you're still like
- 30:34Speaker 4: looking at saltwater taffy shops and little you know, it's
- 30:37Speaker 4: very similar no matter where you go.
- 30:39Speaker 3: But Fred's right Province Town.
- 30:40Speaker 4: And then I just throw on Main Street Hyghennas if
- 30:42Speaker 4: you don't want to drive all the way to the
- 30:44Speaker 4: tip of the cape. Hyennas right in the middle of
- 30:46Speaker 4: the cape and they've got similar lot of stuff shop.
- 30:48Speaker 1: All right, thanks Robert, Well, enjoy your trip to the Cape.
- 30:51Speaker 6: Yeah, sure, some good advice there.
- 30:54Speaker 3: You come to the right place for this advice.
- 30:56Speaker 2: Oh yeah, we didn't even get into like what restaurants
- 30:59Speaker 2: to but that's a whole other show. Yeah, Brandon and
- 31:04Speaker 2: Main write sin as a distinction the resident curmudgeon Paul
- 31:07Speaker 2: will appreciate.
- 31:09Speaker 1: I hear a lot of hype.
- 31:10Speaker 2: And excitement for Diggs as wide receiver one, including you, Evan.
- 31:14Speaker 2: Do you all think he really is a wide receiver
- 31:17Speaker 2: one or is he just our number one? He just
- 31:19Speaker 2: screamed volume guy to me the last couple of years.
- 31:22Speaker 2: And while he's better than what we have, I'm not
- 31:24Speaker 2: expecting him to be a key for unlocking mace potential
- 31:28Speaker 2: or that of the offense.
- 31:31Speaker 1: I think you agree with his premise.
- 31:33Speaker 6: Uh yeah, And that's like what I've been saying the
- 31:36Speaker 6: whole time. Like he's in now at this point of
- 31:38Speaker 6: his career, he's a chain mover. He is not the explosive,
- 31:41Speaker 6: big play over the top receiver that maybe he was
- 31:44Speaker 6: a little bit in Buffalo and at the end of Minnesota,
- 31:47Speaker 6: like he is turned into at this stage of his career.
- 31:50Speaker 6: He's kind of turned into that we're oute running technician
- 31:52Speaker 6: that on third down he's going to be a guy
- 31:55Speaker 6: that's going to get past the sticks and move the chain.
- 31:57Speaker 6: So in that sense, if that's like sort of what
- 31:59Speaker 6: he's then I hear that. I don't know. I'm I
- 32:03Speaker 6: think Doozy might be on the same page with me.
- 32:05Speaker 6: The whole wide receiver one thing's starting to bug me,
- 32:07Speaker 6: like it just like I don't know what that means.
- 32:10Speaker 6: Like yeah, like I get what you're trying to say,
- 32:12Speaker 6: but like I just I don't know, like is he
- 32:14Speaker 6: a wide receiver? I don't know, Like maybe like I
- 32:17Speaker 6: will see.
- 32:19Speaker 1: Like like well, he mentions, is he just our wide
- 32:22Speaker 1: receiver one?
- 32:23Speaker 2: Like yeah, so can a wide receiver one look different
- 32:26Speaker 2: on different teams? Like you know in your mind, like
- 32:28Speaker 2: the obvious one is justin Jefferson Jamar Chase. Those are
- 32:31Speaker 2: like wide receiver, right, you know, but like if Stefan
- 32:35Speaker 2: Diggs and our team has one hundred and ten catches, yeah,
- 32:40Speaker 2: what's wrong with that?
- 32:41Speaker 5: Right?
- 32:41Speaker 3: But they're chain moving catches and not like bomb bomb.
- 32:45Speaker 6: Yeah right, yeah, I hear. I get what it is.
- 32:48Speaker 4: I just think there's like a handful and you named
- 32:50Speaker 4: a couple of them from of guys that everybody wants,
- 32:53Speaker 4: like the superstar wide receivers.
- 32:54Speaker 3: Stefon Diggs still a superstar wide receiver.
- 32:57Speaker 1: I don't know if he's still so he has a
- 32:58Speaker 1: couple of would you rathers?
- 33:00Speaker 2: I didn't mean to pick on him you know me
- 33:03Speaker 2: Gigs at.
- 33:06Speaker 7: This point, Yeah, Young, same thing with Wilson, right, yeah,
- 33:12Speaker 7: Young Jerry, Judy Diggs, Ye Flowers.
- 33:18Speaker 6: I do love to save Flowers. I don't know, there's
- 33:20Speaker 6: such different players, Like I think this is the hard
- 33:22Speaker 6: part with me with the receiver, like what like that's
- 33:26Speaker 6: they're just differult I wouldn't.
- 33:27Speaker 3: Tell you that Flowers is number one receiver right now.
- 33:29Speaker 6: They keep searching for him.
- 33:30Speaker 1: Honestly, Courtland Sutton, who.
- 33:33Speaker 6: I mean, Courtland Sutton is like a jump ball outside,
- 33:36Speaker 6: big bodied receiver and we're comparing.
- 33:38Speaker 1: Him to it.
- 33:40Speaker 6: It's hard.
- 33:40Speaker 1: It's like I think on our team, I take Diggs
- 33:43Speaker 1: me too.
- 33:43Speaker 6: I know what I'm saying. I just think that's the
- 33:45Speaker 6: thing for me is like if Diggs is going to
- 33:46Speaker 6: fill into that role that we've seen and maybe it's
- 33:50Speaker 6: a little bit more outside than it than like Edelman
- 33:52Speaker 6: and Welker and like those types of guys, but if
- 33:55Speaker 6: he's going to be the engine of the offense, then
- 33:58Speaker 6: he then he's a wide receiver one like he he's
- 34:00Speaker 6: the engine like and to me, you know, I think
- 34:02Speaker 6: this is where like Paul always will say, well, you
- 34:05Speaker 6: know it's why like catch for eight yards. It's like, well,
- 34:07Speaker 6: if it's third and seven, then I'll take the eight yards.
- 34:10Speaker 6: And that's gonna be the type of guy that he's
- 34:12Speaker 6: gonna be. He's not going to be Courtland Sutton. He's
- 34:14Speaker 6: not going to be a six foot four outside receiver
- 34:17Speaker 6: that's gonna like catch jump balls fifty yards down the field.
- 34:20Speaker 6: It's not gonna be his game.
- 34:21Speaker 4: I just I just don't get the premise though, that
- 34:23Speaker 4: somehow that that receiver would be better for Drake May's
- 34:25Speaker 4: development than a route technician who's gonna get open on
- 34:29Speaker 4: third down.
- 34:29Speaker 3: Like, to me, the way you're keeping confidence building.
- 34:32Speaker 4: Right, Like Diggs is kind of, like I said on
- 34:34Speaker 4: the pregame show, like he just is going to get
- 34:36Speaker 4: you out of that rut and give you somebody you
- 34:38Speaker 4: always say, Fred they're easy to defend, Like Diggs is
- 34:41Speaker 4: somebody that on third down you probably are gonna have
- 34:43Speaker 4: to figure out where he is and have a plan
- 34:45Speaker 4: to cover him and stop him. I know we've watched
- 34:48Speaker 4: plenty of Patriots games against when he was with the
- 34:49Speaker 4: Bills and even.
- 34:50Speaker 1: Last year when he was in the Texans.
- 34:51Speaker 4: Where you're like, third down, make sure you cover digs,
- 34:53Speaker 4: and then it's like Yeah, this little, you know, quick
- 34:55Speaker 4: route that's perfectly executed and the ball's right on him
- 34:57Speaker 4: and it's first down.
- 34:59Speaker 3: That to me seems like it's it's gonna be a
- 35:00Speaker 3: great bonus for Drake.
- 35:01Speaker 6: There's no doubt that there's a question about the overall,
- 35:04Speaker 6: like the explosiveness still of this offense. Like they they
- 35:08Speaker 6: have guys like Hunter Henry and Stefan Diggs that within
- 35:11Speaker 6: that twenty yard box of the line of scrimmage can
- 35:13Speaker 6: make plays. Is there anybody that's going to break out
- 35:16Speaker 6: of that twenty yard box? And maybe it's Kyle will it's.
- 35:19Speaker 3: Going to bring that up.
- 35:19Speaker 1: We saw that today.
- 35:20Speaker 4: So if that's an element that Kyle Wims is going
- 35:22Speaker 4: to bring and Drake may ain't afraid to throw those
- 35:24Speaker 4: deep balls.
- 35:25Speaker 3: That might come together the way that people want. Now
- 35:27Speaker 3: who's the one, who's the two?
- 35:29Speaker 1: I don't know, but it could be a very hard offense.
- 35:32Speaker 2: Audrey said on the show that we did it looked
- 35:34Speaker 2: like we were at a morgue.
- 35:36Speaker 1: She said, is that a covered body in front of
- 35:38Speaker 1: you guys? So I don't know what it looked like.
- 35:42Speaker 6: The black criticism that's okay, said Sor Right, Okay, Sor right,
- 35:48Speaker 6: let's get back to the phones.
- 35:50Speaker 1: We'll go to Kendall in North Carolina. I hate Kendall.
- 35:53Speaker 10: Hey, what's going on, guys doing all right?
- 35:57Speaker 11: Yeah?
- 35:57Speaker 10: Well, and will y'all impressed with the cal Williams his
- 36:02Speaker 10: day today and just overall, what y'all spring and I
- 36:05Speaker 10: take it up there.
- 36:06Speaker 2: I appreciate it, Okay, thanks Kendall. I mean, we saw
- 36:08Speaker 2: him make the catch of the day today.
- 36:10Speaker 6: The juice is real, Like, there's definitely burst and speed
- 36:13Speaker 6: to his game. I'm sure that there's a lot of
- 36:15Speaker 6: little details that he's still getting, you know, caught up
- 36:19Speaker 6: on and learning at this you know level of football.
- 36:23Speaker 6: I mean, but there's no doubt that he moves well,
- 36:25Speaker 6: like I mean, we saw it today, ran right through
- 36:27Speaker 6: the middle of the defense and nobody touched him, you know,
- 36:30Speaker 6: so that that's definitely encouraging. I would say the same
- 36:34Speaker 6: thing about Trevon Henderson. Now, is he grasping it? You know,
- 36:38Speaker 6: is he running the right routes and is he doing
- 36:40Speaker 6: the right things at all the time? Like I don't know,
- 36:42Speaker 6: you know, Josh McDaniels would have to tell you that,
- 36:44Speaker 6: but I think you're encouraged by the way he moves.
- 36:46Speaker 5: It's gonna be a.
- 36:47Speaker 1: Big joint practice guy. Like, how's he get off the line?
- 36:50Speaker 11: Like?
- 36:50Speaker 4: Does that release pass translate to physical press corners?
- 36:53Speaker 6: It's a great point. That's the number one thing is
- 36:57Speaker 6: you know when they get into the pads and they
- 36:58Speaker 6: start pressing him. He's a smaller guy, He's one hundred
- 37:02Speaker 6: and ninety pounds, Like, is he gonna be able to
- 37:03Speaker 6: get off press at this level? If not, then he's
- 37:06Speaker 6: you know, you're gonna have to maybe play him inside
- 37:08Speaker 6: and off the line of scrimmage a little bit more.
- 37:11Speaker 2: All right, let's next go to Colin in Connecticut. What's
- 37:15Speaker 2: up Colin?
- 37:17Speaker 1: Colin? Hello, Yeah, Hello.
- 37:23Speaker 11: A couple of questions. I'll make it click. What's your
- 37:26Speaker 11: biggest worry with the defense? I know you've mentioned big
- 37:30Speaker 11: plays being a possible worry, but anything else. And then
- 37:36Speaker 11: you guys mentioned Jared Wilson and Mike and Winu hooking
- 37:40Speaker 11: about an injury.
- 37:43Speaker 4: Yeah, they're they're just rehabbing. Yeah, they're they're rehabbing right now.
- 37:46Speaker 4: They're limited there, yeah, limited, you know, we're working through stuff.
- 37:49Speaker 4: They're in some drills, they're not others. I would say
- 37:51Speaker 4: my two biggest concerns are speed off the edge and
- 37:55Speaker 4: rangey free safety like coverage on.
- 37:57Speaker 5: The back end.
- 37:57Speaker 6: Yeah, I was gonna say pass rush off the edge. Yeah,
- 38:00Speaker 6: I think that's right.
- 38:01Speaker 1: Now.
- 38:02Speaker 6: I'm pretty confident that Harold Andry is going to be solid.
- 38:05Speaker 4: He seems very excited in the post game post practice interviews.
- 38:08Speaker 4: He seems like he's re energizing it.
- 38:09Speaker 6: Yeah, I'm sure he's going to be solid. He's been
- 38:12Speaker 6: a solid run defender even last year, throughout his entire career.
- 38:16Speaker 6: Are they going to have enough juice off the edge?
- 38:18Speaker 6: You know, they're gonna get the pressure up the middle
- 38:20Speaker 6: from the two guys, you know, Barmore and Williams. But
- 38:22Speaker 6: who's going to clean up? Who's going to get the
- 38:24Speaker 6: edge rush? You know that's going to be.
- 38:26Speaker 4: You can expect both those edge guys to get one
- 38:29Speaker 4: on one matchups, probably because Barmore and Williams are probably
- 38:32Speaker 4: gonna draw some double teams in attention, and those guys
- 38:35Speaker 4: have to be able to take advantage of those of
- 38:37Speaker 4: those one on one.
- 38:38Speaker 2: I mean, my my fear is like we brought all
- 38:42Speaker 2: these free agents in and they look good, they seem
- 38:45Speaker 2: to fit. It's the right guys, but rarely when you
- 38:49Speaker 2: bring in that many like do they all hit?
- 38:51Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 38:51Speaker 2: And I think for this team, we need them kind
- 38:54Speaker 2: of all to hit, you know, the higher ones. You know,
- 38:57Speaker 2: we need Spelane to be good, we need Judie would
- 39:00Speaker 2: be good, We need you know, obviously Williams to be good.
- 39:04Speaker 1: You know, they all have to hit for this defense
- 39:07Speaker 1: to be good this year.
- 39:08Speaker 6: It's a great point, like you get teams. You know,
- 39:10Speaker 6: last year, the Tennessee Titans spent a bunch of money
- 39:13Speaker 6: in free agency, and they won as many games as
- 39:15Speaker 6: the Patriots. Right now, the Washington Commander spent a bunch
- 39:18Speaker 6: of money in free agency, went to the NFC Championship game. Yeah,
- 39:21Speaker 6: and when you when you have this model, there doesn't
- 39:23Speaker 6: seem to be a middle ground there where it's like
- 39:25Speaker 6: we won eight games right right, It's like you're either
- 39:27Speaker 6: a playoff team because of it or it didn't work
- 39:30Speaker 6: and it blew up in your face and there's really
- 39:32Speaker 6: no in between.
- 39:33Speaker 2: You know, throw Carlton Davison there too, Like sure, I
- 39:35Speaker 2: mean these are all good players that you brought in,
- 39:37Speaker 2: but that doesn't always mean that every free agent that
- 39:41Speaker 2: you bring in, you know, hits.
- 39:43Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean you're putting a lot on a lot
- 39:44Speaker 4: of these guys. It's remarkable to me. I mean, you guys,
- 39:47Speaker 4: have you guys, Fred and Paul had some experience watching
- 39:51Speaker 4: coaching changes and wholesale changes on defense. You know last
- 39:55Speaker 4: year there wasn't wholesale changes on defense. It was in
- 39:57Speaker 4: large part the same defense. So that's it's a new
- 40:00Speaker 4: experience for me now looking out there and seeing just
- 40:03Speaker 4: so many new faces on the defensive side of the ball,
- 40:05Speaker 4: not only in.
- 40:06Speaker 1: Support roles, but really calling the defense.
- 40:09Speaker 4: And like the key guys are like Robert Splaine and
- 40:11Speaker 4: Milton Williams and Harold Landry, Like, yeah, these are the
- 40:13Speaker 4: key pieces to the defense this year that we have
- 40:15Speaker 4: no real experience watching it.
- 40:17Speaker 6: I mean Roberts, yeah, Robert Splain is like probably gonna
- 40:20Speaker 6: be your green dot.
- 40:21Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 40:21Speaker 6: And he's never played a game in the Patriot uniform before.
- 40:24Speaker 6: Now he's been in this defense before, so he has
- 40:26Speaker 6: some experience with it. But like he's your starting Mike linebacker,
- 40:30Speaker 6: so you think he's the one calling the defense.
- 40:32Speaker 4: I just I have more confidence too, because I think
- 40:34Speaker 4: we've washed away the feeling of like Bill Belichick's defenses
- 40:37Speaker 4: are so complex and there's gonna be week to week,
- 40:40Speaker 4: we're gonna change and we can be anything. They don't
- 40:43Speaker 4: really seem interested in that. They're just like, we are
- 40:45Speaker 4: going to get after you really fast and be aggressive.
- 40:47Speaker 4: You might land a couple punches on us, but I promise.
- 40:49Speaker 1: You we're going to lay some on you. It all
- 40:51Speaker 1: starts with Gonzo and Davis. If they can do their jobs,
- 40:55Speaker 1: if they can truly be.
- 40:57Speaker 2: True one on one cornerbacks, and obviously they've shown that
- 41:00Speaker 2: they can in this league, that frees up everything. Then
- 41:04Speaker 2: you don't have to be so you know, game plan specific,
- 41:08Speaker 2: because we're going to take out two of your guys
- 41:11Speaker 2: and we're going to free up the rest so that
- 41:13Speaker 2: you know, we don't have to double you know, certain
- 41:15Speaker 2: players and that that is so freeing for a defense
- 41:19Speaker 2: to have two shutdown corners on your team.
- 41:22Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean it buy it buys time for the
- 41:24Speaker 4: edge rush you know that we're talking about. It also
- 41:27Speaker 4: means that they don't have to run as many games,
- 41:29Speaker 4: and I think that's you know, when defenses start to
- 41:31Speaker 4: get in trouble and can't get pressure conventionally, when guys
- 41:34Speaker 4: can't win one on one matchups, that's when you start
- 41:36Speaker 4: going to you know, stunts and loops and all that
- 41:39Speaker 4: stuff that I'm sure they're going to do anyway. I mean,
- 41:41Speaker 4: that's you know what verybol and Williams did in Tennessee.
- 41:44Speaker 4: But you just don't want to have to be overly
- 41:46Speaker 4: relying on it. You don't want to have to be
- 41:47Speaker 4: able to have to scheme up pressure. You want to
- 41:49Speaker 4: be able to produce pressure. The interior guys should not
- 41:53Speaker 4: have a problem doing that, But you just don't want
- 41:55Speaker 4: defense or offenses to be able to say, protect the middle,
- 41:58Speaker 4: make sure he can step up. They don't have the
- 42:00Speaker 4: juice to get around the edge on us or just
- 42:02Speaker 4: step up in the pocket. As long as we hold
- 42:04Speaker 4: with those two guys, we're gonna have enough on the pockets.
- 42:06Speaker 2: But you know, you talk about complimentary defense, and you know,
- 42:10Speaker 2: the pass rush compliments the coverage. The coverage compliments the
- 42:14Speaker 2: pass rush. And I think we're from the from the
- 42:18Speaker 2: get go. We've got two guys that can really set
- 42:21Speaker 2: the tone now and juries are going to happen, you know,
- 42:24Speaker 2: so you always have to be concerned with depth. That's
- 42:27Speaker 2: a concern for every team. So you know, if one
- 42:31Speaker 2: of those guys goes down, you know that that's an issue,
- 42:35Speaker 2: and I'll look at linebacker. I think I'm a little
- 42:38Speaker 2: bit worried about depth at linebackers as well.
- 42:40Speaker 6: I would say, really at all three levels of the defense.
- 42:43Speaker 6: Like I feel like they've made a lot of progress
- 42:46Speaker 6: on both sides of the ball with the starting eleven
- 42:48Speaker 6: on both sides, and you start to put the you know,
- 42:51Speaker 6: the projections together and you're like, all right, this is
- 42:54Speaker 6: a pretty good starting defense. But in pretty much all
- 42:57Speaker 6: areas they have questions about depth. You know, they really
- 43:00Speaker 6: don't have much, you know, into your defensive line depth.
- 43:03Speaker 6: You're going to start to get into you know, the
- 43:05Speaker 6: Jeremiah Farms is and you know, maybe the Joshua Farmer
- 43:09Speaker 6: and like, yeah, you know, rookies playing and things like that.
- 43:12Speaker 6: But I'm sure that's true for a lot of teams.
- 43:14Speaker 6: And we're just we are hyper focused on this team,
- 43:17Speaker 6: but on on offense too, Like if Will Campbell gets hurt,
- 43:21Speaker 6: god forbid, Like who's playing its Madarian Lowe back out
- 43:25Speaker 6: there left tackle, right, Like they don't necessarily have that
- 43:28Speaker 6: layer built up yet, And you start looking at like
- 43:31Speaker 6: the two deeps and stuff.
- 43:32Speaker 4: I mean, I just you take Landry out, he take
- 43:35Speaker 4: splane out.
- 43:36Speaker 3: He taken Zalis out, like.
- 43:37Speaker 4: Yeah, there's a couple of key threads and every like
- 43:39Speaker 4: you said, every team has those things. But that's why
- 43:42Speaker 4: you look at a guy like Jack Gibbons maybe or
- 43:44Speaker 4: one of the young guys would would get a chance.
- 43:46Speaker 1: But you can only rebuild so much. In what I mean,
- 43:49Speaker 1: it is.
- 43:49Speaker 2: Hard to have quality depth in the NFL throughout. I
- 43:52Speaker 2: think where teams really get hurt is when you get
- 43:55Speaker 2: that slew of injuries at one in one area. Then
- 43:59Speaker 2: it's like almost possible. But on a good team, well coached,
- 44:03Speaker 2: everybody knows what they're doing, so you can weather that
- 44:06Speaker 2: storm if they're sprinkled in different places, you know. So
- 44:10Speaker 2: if it's just a farm's coming in, you know, and
- 44:12Speaker 2: it's not two guys having to come in, then you
- 44:15Speaker 2: know a lot of times good teams will they'll be
- 44:17Speaker 2: able to handle that, you know.
- 44:19Speaker 6: But my favorites is the Djenga theory. It's like you
- 44:23Speaker 6: know Jenga, Yeah, and it's like every piece isn't the same, right,
- 44:26Speaker 6: every Like they're all different spots and stuff like that.
- 44:28Speaker 6: So each team has like, you know, pieces that if
- 44:31Speaker 6: you pull it out, the tower is gonna come down.
- 44:33Speaker 6: Like Drake May gets pulled out the tower it goes to.
- 44:36Speaker 6: But like the are certain players that like it will
- 44:38Speaker 6: be wobbly, but you can probably like get away with it,
- 44:41Speaker 6: you know, I think, you know, Drake may Gonzo, I
- 44:44Speaker 6: would say at this point, Will Campbell, just because of
- 44:46Speaker 6: what they have behind him at left tackle is a
- 44:48Speaker 6: very you know, important piece, and you know, maybe a
- 44:51Speaker 6: couple of.
- 44:51Speaker 2: Why they call them pillars, pillar falls, the house falls,
- 44:55Speaker 2: Destiny writes in I was having a discussion with some
- 44:58Speaker 2: friends about the GPS tra that the athletes use, the
- 45:01Speaker 2: ones that look like they're wearing a bra. What do
- 45:04Speaker 2: you guys think about the look of it? Well, I
- 45:07Speaker 2: mean it's underneath, you know, like the soccer players more
- 45:10Speaker 2: before the football player. It's kind of got a sports
- 45:12Speaker 2: bra vibe.
- 45:12Speaker 1: It does, you know, it certainly does.
- 45:14Speaker 6: It's not something I considered myself with too often, but
- 45:18Speaker 6: I do. Like he was asked again, verybel was asked
- 45:20Speaker 6: again today about the role of analytics. And we often
- 45:23Speaker 6: think about analytics in terms of like fourth down decision
- 45:26Speaker 6: making and stuff like that, but the sports sciences is
- 45:29Speaker 6: maybe analytics adjacent that we don't bring up as much,
- 45:33Speaker 6: And that type of stuff has come a long way
- 45:35Speaker 6: in terms of like almost being able to be predictive
- 45:38Speaker 6: about certain injuries, like especially like soft tissue and stuff
- 45:41Speaker 6: like that, where it's like this guy's had a few
- 45:44Speaker 6: too many live practice reps and like we're worried that
- 45:47Speaker 6: he's starting to get some wear and tear, so let's
- 45:50Speaker 6: pull him out of practice, you know a little bit
- 45:52Speaker 6: this week and or something along those lines. It's kind
- 45:55Speaker 6: of cool, like they're able to really almost guess, you know,
- 45:58Speaker 6: be predictive about anticipating injuries. You know, you obviously can't
- 46:02Speaker 6: anticipate all of them, but some of them, which is
- 46:05Speaker 6: kind of cool. That's what that thing does. Sports problem.
- 46:08Speaker 1: But I think Destiny was just worried about what the
- 46:11Speaker 1: look it does.
- 46:13Speaker 3: It could probably improve a little bit. It could probably
- 46:14Speaker 3: be like a necklace or something.
- 46:16Speaker 6: Well there's sensors on it, right, Like it's a hard
- 46:18Speaker 6: monitor and like stuff like that.
- 46:20Speaker 1: Yeaheah.
- 46:20Speaker 2: You got to have something that's very tightly fit and
- 46:25Speaker 2: doesn't you know, impede any of the other equipment.
- 46:27Speaker 1: So I guess it makes sense that it's style that way.
- 46:31Speaker 4: It is pretty remarkable that, I mean, we look at
- 46:33Speaker 4: the portal or what she's a blanket on the name
- 46:36Speaker 4: the next gen stats that we watch and like the
- 46:38Speaker 4: next day when those that stuff comes out, all the
- 46:40Speaker 4: stats and everything that they they're able to tabulate max speed,
- 46:44Speaker 4: you're not even you don't even see all of them.
- 46:47Speaker 1: I even imagined.
- 46:48Speaker 4: But it's it's, you know, it's just really interesting sometimes,
- 46:50Speaker 4: like who ran the fastest yesterday?
- 46:52Speaker 1: And like there is you know, it's cool.
- 46:54Speaker 2: Yep, let's see who was this? This is Ram? Yeah,
- 46:59Speaker 2: Ram is writing in he was, he said, listening to
- 47:04Speaker 2: your podcast and your references to the great seventies team,
- 47:08Speaker 2: I thought about a player who I rooted against but
- 47:10Speaker 2: wish was ours as a comparison for Drake May.
- 47:13Speaker 1: And that's Baltimore's Burt Jones.
- 47:15Speaker 3: Oh god, Burt Jocks.
- 47:20Speaker 2: He threw for over three thousand yards in a fourteen
- 47:22Speaker 2: game schedule, twenty four tds, nine interceptions, logged over one
- 47:27Speaker 2: hundred season passer rating only one of three in the seventies,
- 47:31Speaker 2: and won an MVP in seventy six. So he goes
- 47:34Speaker 2: down the line as to you know why he did.
- 47:37Speaker 2: But I hope he's not just Burt Jones, because Burt
- 47:40Speaker 2: Jones really wasn't that mobile. You know, he was a
- 47:42Speaker 2: pocket passer, but he says, these days, I think we
- 47:46Speaker 2: want to see a contemporary icon in our own players.
- 47:48Speaker 2: Drake May can't be Mahomes, Rogers, Alan or Jackson. He
- 47:52Speaker 2: has to craft his own identity. But in the past
- 47:55Speaker 2: there have been players who have had very similar skill
- 47:57Speaker 2: sets to May that have excelled in the most competitive eras.
- 48:00Speaker 2: If May can grow into what Burt Jones at his peak,
- 48:04Speaker 2: I think we should all be a static.
- 48:05Speaker 6: We'll take it, I know.
- 48:07Speaker 3: I mean, he's no Burt Jones.
- 48:10Speaker 4: We'll throw that a policy if he can pick that
- 48:12Speaker 4: one up. But yeah, no, I mean I like it.
- 48:14Speaker 4: I mean it's just Drake. Drake May's got a car of.
- 48:16Speaker 1: His own way, no question.
- 48:18Speaker 4: There's a lot of focus on him this year and
- 48:20Speaker 4: his development and how does he do when the game's
- 48:24Speaker 4: hanging in the balance, in the clutch? You know, those
- 48:26Speaker 4: are those to me, are are the biggest questions that
- 48:28Speaker 4: want to see him him answer this year to get
- 48:30Speaker 4: the opportunity. Heard Abel bring it up again today in
- 48:33Speaker 4: his press conference, seeing a clip of of being good
- 48:35Speaker 4: enough to.
- 48:36Speaker 1: Take advantage of bad football.
- 48:37Speaker 4: That's the bar right now for this team, and I
- 48:39Speaker 4: think if they can get to that point though they'll
- 48:41Speaker 4: win some games.
- 48:42Speaker 6: I hate like looking ahead to the schedule because things
- 48:45Speaker 6: change drastically, and like teams come out of nowhere and
- 48:47Speaker 6: they're good when you think they're going to be bad.
- 48:49Speaker 6: But if they can do the bare minim of taking
- 48:51Speaker 6: advantage of bad football, like Rabel keeps bringing up, the schedule,
- 48:55Speaker 6: sets up that they can win a lot a lot
- 48:57Speaker 6: of that. But do it now right right, and it
- 48:59Speaker 6: might not. It might be like the twenty twenty two
- 49:01Speaker 6: season where there's some rock fights in there and it's
- 49:03Speaker 6: not pretty. But like if they do that at the bottom,
- 49:06Speaker 6: you know, that's their their bottom, you know their their floor.
- 49:10Speaker 6: That's probably good enough for seven or eight wins with
- 49:12Speaker 6: this schedule, Like I mean.
- 49:14Speaker 4: I think you need to too, Like I just I'm
- 49:15Speaker 4: like looking at the players out there and remembering some
- 49:18Speaker 4: of the training camp practices that I watched in twenty
- 49:20Speaker 4: twenty and twenty twenty one and twenty twenty two and
- 49:22Speaker 4: twenty twenty. You know, they're building a little better here now.
- 49:26Speaker 4: Like it just it feels like there's something going on
- 49:28Speaker 4: where it's not just like, oh please God save us
- 49:30Speaker 4: from Ander Stevens, and it's Travion Henderson is in back
- 49:33Speaker 4: of him now, and you know it's not Oh God,
- 49:35Speaker 4: Kendrick Bourne, please save us, like Stefan diggsists here now.
- 49:37Speaker 1: Yeah, you know you're starting.
- 49:39Speaker 6: A number one.
- 49:39Speaker 4: That's one ben't see. But it's there's a lot more excitement.
- 49:45Speaker 4: There's a lot more reason to believe. I think in
- 49:47Speaker 4: the past you were kind of counting on the coaching
- 49:50Speaker 4: staff Bill Belichick specifically, would pull this together and somehow
- 49:54Speaker 4: make a winner out of these guys. It's not as
- 49:57Speaker 4: much of a lift. It feels like there's more talent
- 49:59Speaker 4: on this team across the board, and then there's more speed.
- 50:01Speaker 4: Frankly too, I think you just you feel that kind
- 50:04Speaker 4: of coming off the practice field.
- 50:06Speaker 3: Again.
- 50:06Speaker 4: We'll see if it's translated, but I just I think
- 50:08Speaker 4: there's a lot of reasons to be more optimistic right
- 50:10Speaker 4: now than you might have been in years past, just
- 50:12Speaker 4: based on the personnel.
- 50:13Speaker 6: Well, the good news about going four and thirteen back
- 50:16Speaker 6: to back years as you pick up the top of
- 50:18Speaker 6: the round to get down right, right right, So you
- 50:20Speaker 6: picked Drake May, you pick Will Campbell, and then you're
- 50:23Speaker 6: in the top of the round every round. So you're
- 50:25Speaker 6: picking you know, hot players that like Travon Henderson and
- 50:28Speaker 6: Kyle Williams, Like these are guys we talked about and
- 50:30Speaker 6: guys that were on everybody's boards and everybody was excited about.
- 50:34Speaker 6: And when you're picking in the thirties and then you're
- 50:36Speaker 6: picking again in the sixties and you have that high
- 50:39Speaker 6: pick every single round that if you hit, and theory
- 50:41Speaker 6: you should start to hit on some of these guys.
- 50:43Speaker 2: So, yeah, I didn't hear any you know, reaches this
- 50:48Speaker 2: year during the draft, you know, like.
- 50:50Speaker 1: Now that was a reach.
- 50:51Speaker 6: I mean, you know, Woodson probably the first one and
- 50:55Speaker 6: really the only one.
- 50:56Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean the only one that was.
- 50:57Speaker 4: But I mean as we watch him a little bit,
- 50:58Speaker 4: you understand what they were looking at. And he again
- 51:02Speaker 4: was involved today. And just to echo what I said
- 51:04Speaker 4: in the in the first part, you know, still looking
- 51:07Speaker 4: at Swinson and ponder like can one of those guys
- 51:09Speaker 4: be one of the answers to the thing we're talking
- 51:11Speaker 4: about with concerns about age.
- 51:13Speaker 2: So, like I said at the top of the show, tomorrow,
- 51:16Speaker 2: we're going to be doing it again. Twelve fifteen is
- 51:19Speaker 2: when Rabel starts his press conference. We'll start our cameras
- 51:22Speaker 2: at noon, so we'll you know, hit up the field
- 51:25Speaker 2: and see guys arriving.
- 51:26Speaker 1: Then we'll go to Rabel.
- 51:27Speaker 2: Then we'll go to practice, and we'll keep the cameras
- 51:30Speaker 2: on and we'll be on until they tell us to
- 51:32Speaker 2: turn the cameras off, and then we'll be back in
- 51:35Speaker 2: the studio tomorrow at two thirty.
- 51:37Speaker 1: To wrap it up again.
- 51:39Speaker 2: So I guess it's public knowledge now that they're not
- 51:42Speaker 2: going to practice on Wednesday.
- 51:43Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, they emailed media. Yeah okay, it sounds like
- 51:47Speaker 6: they're going to be working on the field doing some
- 51:50Speaker 6: conditioning and stuff, but not an actual practice.
- 51:53Speaker 2: Okay, so and we're not invited. We are not, Okay,
- 51:56Speaker 2: all right, So.
- 51:57Speaker 1: It'll be two days of this.
- 52:00Speaker 2: Uh. You know, you wonder like what's going to be
- 52:06Speaker 2: a good camp in Rabel's mind, Like, you know, what
- 52:09Speaker 2: will they do today and tomorrow that afterwards he'll say, Okay,
- 52:13Speaker 2: that was good, We're on the right foot.
- 52:15Speaker 1: What are the things he's looking?
- 52:16Speaker 4: I mean, I would just highlight one small thing, which
- 52:19Speaker 4: was I think we had one defensive off sides today
- 52:22Speaker 4: that was a penalty. But we haven't seen a lot
- 52:24Speaker 4: of false starts, mental errors. The sprints happened, I know,
- 52:28Speaker 4: Mike Reese, I think wrote about it in his notes
- 52:30Speaker 4: this weekend, like it's Drake May calling out the cadence,
- 52:33Speaker 4: then it's Rabel calling out the cadence working on starting
- 52:36Speaker 4: on time.
- 52:37Speaker 1: We'll see if that stuff translates.
- 52:38Speaker 4: But I think when Rabel talked at the beginning of
- 52:40Speaker 4: these camps and again he said today, these are really
- 52:42Speaker 4: extension of OTA's, it's just about being on the same page,
- 52:45Speaker 4: not making mental mistakes, not making the same mistakes twice.
- 52:48Speaker 3: And from what I've seen, it seems like they're progressing.
- 52:51Speaker 6: Okay. You'd like to hope that when you end this
- 52:53Speaker 6: that you have the foundation set of the playbooks on
- 52:57Speaker 6: both sides, so that when you get into training camp
- 53:00Speaker 6: you can have some fun, right, Like, that's when you
- 53:01Speaker 6: can really start scheming stuff up and really start putting
- 53:05Speaker 6: in the fun stuff into the especially on the offense,
- 53:07Speaker 6: so can you get your basic install installed. And then
- 53:12Speaker 6: usually the first couple of days of training camp is
- 53:14Speaker 6: a refresher of what you did during OTA's. But at
- 53:18Speaker 6: that point there, once we get into the joint practices,
- 53:20Speaker 6: they're really starting to scheme stuff up, and it's not
- 53:23Speaker 6: just you know, Frankly, a lot of the plays they
- 53:25Speaker 6: run are like high school teams run a lot of
- 53:27Speaker 6: the same plays, right, so once you get to that level,
- 53:30Speaker 6: you know, hopefully you're you're at a different level coming
- 53:33Speaker 6: training camp, where As I think the last couple of
- 53:35Speaker 6: years they were kind of stuck on basic install for
- 53:37Speaker 6: maybe a little bit longer than they wanted to be.
- 53:40Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, we're going to wrap it up. Thank
- 53:43Speaker 2: you for listening. Remember we're going to be back at
- 53:46Speaker 2: noon tomorrow live at noon tomorrow.
- 53:48Speaker 1: We'll see you then. Hey, this is deuced. Thanks for
- 53:53Speaker 1: tuning into the show.
