Latest / Whatever It Takes with Carli Lloyd and Jenny Taft / Our Own "Whatever It Takes" Moments
Transcript
- 0:11Speaker 1: Well, welcome to Whatever It Takes. I am your host,
- 0:14Speaker 1: Carly Lloyd, and I am, of course, joined by my
- 0:18Speaker 1: friend and co-host, Jenny Taft. So today we are actually
- 0:24Speaker 1: going to talk about our own Whatever It Takes. We've
- 0:27Speaker 1: had several episodes that we've come out with. And we
- 0:31Speaker 1: have yet to share our own, both on the professional
- 0:33Speaker 1: side and personal side. So I'm kind of excited about this.
- 0:36Speaker 1: I had to do some, you know, really deep diving
- 0:38Speaker 1: into my brain a little bit. I'm like, what does
- 0:41Speaker 1: whatever it takes mean to me? So really looking forward
- 0:44Speaker 1: to this, especially hearing your story, Jenny.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Want to dive in? Yeah, I'm excited.
- 0:49Speaker 3: We've shared this on a couple episodes, but the name
- 0:52Speaker 3: of the show, Whatever It Takes, I think really came
- 0:55Speaker 3: from you and your journey and you as an athlete
- 0:59Speaker 3: and getting to know you and just, you know, I've
- 1:01Speaker 3: said this and I'll keep saying it, but your success
- 1:05Speaker 3: is so inspiring. And I just have always viewed you
- 1:07Speaker 3: as someone who was going to do whatever it takes
- 1:09Speaker 3: to be the best of the best, which you accomplished.
- 1:12Speaker 3: And I think that's what's so cool. But it no
- 1:15Speaker 3: one knows the steps to get to that point, right?
- 1:17Speaker 3: So I think that's why our stories will be fun.
- 1:20Speaker 3: And we figured this episode, we could do a family, personal,
- 1:25Speaker 3: whatever it takes moment and a professional one.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that's perfect. I'm excited.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Okay. And you've done whatever it takes too. So don't
- 1:33Speaker 1: just single me out as, you know, this headlining this
- 1:36Speaker 1: podcast of ours.
- 1:38Speaker 3: I do, but it's funny because I so vividly remember,
- 1:41Speaker 3: I mean, this is weird too. I was like, taking
- 1:44Speaker 3: a shower and I was like, this is it, whatever
- 1:47Speaker 3: it takes.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Like it just hit me.
- 1:49Speaker 3: I kept thinking about, that's weird, I guess, that I
- 1:52Speaker 3: was thinking about the podcast of the shower, but whatever.
- 1:55Speaker 2: It is what it is.
- 1:56Speaker 3: But I was thinking about you and just those like words,
- 2:00Speaker 3: you know, we had so many ideas that were not great,
- 2:02Speaker 3: you know, I can't even remember.
- 2:05Speaker 2: We had a lot. We had a lot, but they
- 2:06Speaker 2: were great names.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:08Speaker 3: I mean, whatever it takes. And now we've had two
- 2:11Speaker 3: guests share their Whatever It Takes moments. And we do
- 2:13Speaker 3: want to encourage our listeners to share their Whatever It
- 2:17Speaker 3: Takes moments. So at least throughout the show, if you're
- 2:20Speaker 3: listening and something comes to mind, please do share it
- 2:23Speaker 3: with us on social.
- 2:23Speaker 2: We're going to try to be more active. Like, subscribe, review,
- 2:29Speaker 2: share all the things.
- 2:30Speaker 3: But we want to hear from our listeners too. And
- 2:32Speaker 3: I think that that's what will be so fun. This
- 2:34Speaker 3: is a community.
- 2:35Speaker 2: Yes, I agree.
- 2:36Speaker 1: And I think, you know, with whatever it takes doesn't
- 2:41Speaker 1: necessarily have to be, which is what I wanted to
- 2:44Speaker 1: throw out, doesn't have to necessarily be something that makes
- 2:48Speaker 1: you successful. I think whatever it takes can be doing
- 2:52Speaker 1: whatever it takes as a parent, as a spouse, as
- 2:54Speaker 1: a friend, as a sibling, all these different avenues of life, right?
- 2:58Speaker 1: And obviously we are in the business and you're in
- 3:02Speaker 1: the TV space. You know, I used to play and
- 3:05Speaker 1: those measures of success, we had to be willing to
- 3:10Speaker 1: do whatever it takes. So I think that's a good
- 3:13Speaker 1: point to put out to the listeners that you don't
- 3:15Speaker 1: have to be a professional athlete or a, you know,
- 3:20Speaker 1: mainstream TV sideline reporter.
- 3:23Speaker 2: So all good. Got to do whatever it takes.
- 3:25Speaker 3: I mean, I was thinking about last weekend, like the
- 3:27Speaker 3: interviews with coaches, like it's chaotic, it's crazy, whatever it takes,
- 3:31Speaker 3: like find a way. Sometimes they'll chat longer. Sometimes they'll
- 3:34Speaker 3: chat shorter. You know, you just got to be ready
- 3:36Speaker 3: to go with the flow.
- 3:37Speaker 2: So, okay. Let's get into it. Personal story first.
- 3:41Speaker 1: I want to hear this lacrosse story that you've got.
- 3:44Speaker 2: Oh, okay. This is fun.
- 3:47Speaker 3: You know, the other thing that's so unique, now living
- 3:50Speaker 3: in Boston again, and I know you know Matt is
- 3:52Speaker 3: now coaching at BU, so it feels like so many
- 3:56Speaker 3: of my college memories are coming back and just on
- 3:58Speaker 3: my mind living here. It's really been fun to be
- 4:01Speaker 3: back here, but My story that I wanted to share
- 4:04Speaker 3: with you, my whatever-it-takes moment that I always go back to,
- 4:06Speaker 3: as you know, I played lacrosse at BU, and I
- 4:09Speaker 3: was a walk-on. But what I probably didn't tell you,
- 4:13Speaker 3: I actually tried out and was cut first. So I'm
- 4:18Speaker 3: from Minnesota, which, of course, you know, in Minnesota, I
- 4:21Speaker 3: was a good lacrosse player. I won, like, Minnesota Lacrosse
- 4:24Speaker 3: Player of the Year, which seems very fancy, but at
- 4:27Speaker 3: the time, there were probably 20 of us playing.
- 4:29Speaker 2: So it was exciting, but I was also.
- 4:32Speaker 3: athletic so being good at lacrosse in Minnesota at the
- 4:36Speaker 3: time because it was kind of a new sport was
- 4:38Speaker 3: really just being athletic and being fast because I liked
- 4:41Speaker 3: lacrosse more than soccer and that's really why I made
- 4:43Speaker 3: the transition because it was so much more high scoring
- 4:47Speaker 3: and I was a forward I was a tack and
- 4:49Speaker 3: I wanted to score fast you had some I was
- 4:50Speaker 3: fast yeah like I was I was fast comparing how
- 4:54Speaker 3: fast some of my college teammates were I don't know
- 4:57Speaker 3: if I was that fast but at least in high
- 4:58Speaker 3: school I was fast and I wanted to score so
- 5:00Speaker 3: I would just run down the field and score. And
- 5:03Speaker 3: I was a lefty, which was definitely an advantage in lacrosse.
- 5:06Speaker 3: You know, strong side was my left side. So point
- 5:10Speaker 3: of the story is I had some opportunities to play
- 5:13Speaker 3: Division I hockey or D3 hockey or lacrosse, but mostly
- 5:17Speaker 3: D3 because lacrosse was still growing and I was kind
- 5:20Speaker 3: of not a name.
- 5:22Speaker 2: I tried to scout or recruit myself a little bit.
- 5:25Speaker 3: I would go to camps, but I was obsessed with
- 5:26Speaker 3: the idea of going to the East Coast to play
- 5:29Speaker 3: lacrosse or ice hockey. And there was this vision in
- 5:32Speaker 3: my mind that I could be the first Minnesota player
- 5:34Speaker 3: to play Division I lacrosse, which I think it had
- 5:37Speaker 3: happened before, but it was really just so.
- 5:39Speaker 2: Rare at the time.
- 5:40Speaker 3: So fast forward, I applied to every school, really wanted
- 5:46Speaker 3: to go to BC. And that's why this came to
- 5:48Speaker 3: my mind yesterday, because I had a babysitter come over
- 5:51Speaker 3: last night, a BC student. So I picked her up
- 5:53Speaker 3: on campus and I was like, wow, I really wanted
- 5:55Speaker 3: to go here. And I did not get in. And
- 5:57Speaker 3: it really hurt. Like, I thought my... I was going
- 6:01Speaker 3: to end up at BC. You know, it looks like Hogwarts.
- 6:05Speaker 3: It's got the Catholic background. I really liked BC.
- 6:08Speaker 2: That was your dream school. That was the dream. And
- 6:11Speaker 2: I didn't get in. From a young age? What was that?
- 6:14Speaker 2: From a young age? You always wanted to go there?
- 6:16Speaker 3: I don't know when it started, but it became this
- 6:19Speaker 3: like East Coast obsession. And they had a lacrosse and
- 6:22Speaker 3: ice hockey team. So in my mind... I was good enough.
- 6:25Speaker 3: I talked to the hockey coach a little bit. It
- 6:27Speaker 3: would probably still have been like a walk-on situation, but
- 6:30Speaker 3: I liked B.C. I did have this visual of B.C.,
- 6:33Speaker 3: and I got waitlisted, and then I got denied, and
- 6:37Speaker 3: that really hurt. Wow. That hurt Jenny Taft at Edina
- 6:40Speaker 3: High School. Not easy. But my dad had taken me.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Yeah, it hurt.
- 6:45Speaker 3: My dad had taken me on a Boston tour, and
- 6:48Speaker 3: he was an ice hockey player, and he played at Wisconsin,
- 6:51Speaker 3: and he said, I remember playing at B.U., And loving
- 6:55Speaker 3: the rink and the atmosphere. And we hadn't really even
- 6:57Speaker 3: thought about BU. I didn't know a lot about BU.
- 7:00Speaker 3: But BU had a great journalism school.
- 7:01Speaker 2: So I applied to BU. I fell in love with BU.
- 7:05Speaker 3: And I really do think, you know, I'm going to
- 7:08Speaker 3: try to walk onto the lacrosse team. And BU lacrosse
- 7:10Speaker 3: was really, really good at the time. We were top
- 7:12Speaker 3: 10 pretty much my whole four years.
- 7:14Speaker 2: Wow. You guys were Big East, right? We were Big
- 7:19Speaker 2: East at the time. Mm-hmm. I think we were Merrick
- 7:22Speaker 2: East at one point. Like, it changed a couple times.
- 7:25Speaker 2: Those are things I should know.
- 7:25Speaker 1: I'm getting confused because I feel like maybe Rutgers, we played,
- 7:29Speaker 1: maybe we did play Boston College, Big East.
- 7:32Speaker 2: I can't remember if they were playoffs. They've changed. Yeah,
- 7:36Speaker 2: the conferences. And it was a good team.
- 7:38Speaker 3: So I knew that it was going to be a stretch,
- 7:41Speaker 3: but I figured, why not? I think there were 10
- 7:44Speaker 3: girls who tried out as walk-ons. It was a new
- 7:47Speaker 3: coach at BU. So I went to the tryouts. I
- 7:50Speaker 3: think it was a week-long process. I knew I was
- 7:54Speaker 3: athletic enough, but it was very clear that my right
- 7:57Speaker 3: side was not as good as everyone else because I
- 8:00Speaker 3: just got away with it in Minnesota. There was really
- 8:02Speaker 3: no need to use left and right. So I was
- 8:05Speaker 3: very consciously aware that I was not up to par.
- 8:08Speaker 3: Like there were so many stick handling tests and my
- 8:10Speaker 3: right side just wasn't strong enough. And I mean, frankly,
- 8:13Speaker 3: it It still definitely isn't.
- 8:16Speaker 2: So they want a lot of players to be good
- 8:18Speaker 2: with both then? You have to.
- 8:20Speaker 3: Now it's pretty much not even, you always, of course,
- 8:23Speaker 3: have a dominant side, but you have to be able
- 8:28Speaker 3: to use both hands. Like it's just, yeah, you would
- 8:30Speaker 3: really stand out if you could not. So I just
- 8:34Speaker 3: didn't have to. The competition wasn't good enough in Minnesota.
- 8:37Speaker 3: So go to tryouts. I feel good about it. I
- 8:41Speaker 3: ended up being my best friend at school. Caitlin was
- 8:43Speaker 3: another walk-on. And she, end of the week, she texts
- 8:47Speaker 3: me that she makes the team, right? Or call, I
- 8:49Speaker 3: don't know if we were texting, emails me. And I
- 8:53Speaker 3: got an email that I did not. And I guess
- 8:56Speaker 3: it came from the head coach, Liz, at the time.
- 9:00Speaker 3: And I cannot, for the life of me, figure out
- 9:04Speaker 3: why I had the confidence to email her back and say,
- 9:10Speaker 3: I wish I could find the email. I looked and
- 9:13Speaker 3: it must have been my BU email so that I
- 9:16Speaker 3: don't have it anymore. But I put together a great
- 9:19Speaker 3: email and I basically listed all the reasons why that
- 9:22Speaker 3: was a mistake that I didn't make the team.
- 9:25Speaker 2: And I said, please give me another shot.
- 9:26Speaker 3: Like, just let me prove to you that I'm good
- 9:30Speaker 3: enough to be on this team because I really believe
- 9:32Speaker 3: that I am along those lines. And I remember sitting
- 9:36Speaker 3: there like, wow, I'm really, but why not? Like what,
- 9:39Speaker 3: where she says is absolutely not, this is crazy. And
- 9:42Speaker 3: I got an email back from her pretty quickly.
- 9:45Speaker 2: And all it said was like, please come to my office.
- 9:48Speaker 3: So I did, I sprinted over to the lacrosse office,
- 9:52Speaker 3: which was pretty close to my dorm at the time.
- 9:53Speaker 3: And she brought me in and she was like, I
- 9:56Speaker 3: have never had anyone do that. Like, respond to being
- 10:02Speaker 3: cut and say, no, no, no, you made a mistake
- 10:04Speaker 3: and I actually want to prove you wrong.
- 10:07Speaker 2: And she was like.
- 10:08Speaker 3: I don't know if I like it or I hate it,
- 10:10Speaker 3: but I guess I'm going to give you another shot.
- 10:12Speaker 3: And it was so crazy.
- 10:14Speaker 2: So I sat there. Wait, so your parents didn't tell
- 10:16Speaker 2: you to do it? Like nobody told you to do this? Mm-mm.
- 10:18Speaker 3: I remember someone, like my roommate, told me not to.
- 10:21Speaker 2: She was like, this is insane. You can't email her back.
- 10:23Speaker 2: I mean, I would probably say, yeah, probably not. Don't
- 10:26Speaker 2: do that. Don't do that.
- 10:29Speaker 3: And I just, I really truly believed that I was
- 10:32Speaker 3: supposed to play lacrosse at BU. I really felt it.
- 10:36Speaker 3: And I just, I did know I could be good enough.
- 10:38Speaker 3: And I did know I would improve given a chance
- 10:41Speaker 3: to play with such talented players. And I think she
- 10:47Speaker 3: kept me in her office and she ended up going
- 10:49Speaker 3: to the back and finding a jersey and some shorts.
- 10:52Speaker 3: And they were extra large. I do have a picture
- 10:55Speaker 3: of that. They were huge because she was like, I
- 10:57Speaker 3: don't have anything left. And I was number five. There
- 11:00Speaker 3: was no choice. She was like, this is the only
- 11:01Speaker 3: number we have left. And this is the only size
- 11:03Speaker 3: we have left. But yeah, you can come to practice
- 11:06Speaker 3: and we'll figure it out. So we had this plan,
- 11:09Speaker 3: like at the end of the month, we would reevaluate.
- 11:13Speaker 3: And it was the hardest month of my life, for sure.
- 11:17Speaker 3: And I did train and I would just sit on
- 11:19Speaker 3: the wall and just practice. And so my friend Caitlin
- 11:22Speaker 3: and I would do it together. We would just sit,
- 11:24Speaker 3: play wall ball and get better. Oh, man.
- 11:26Speaker 2: I did. I just I worked hard. I knew I
- 11:29Speaker 2: could hang.
- 11:30Speaker 3: And at the end of the month, she kind of
- 11:32Speaker 3: like I remember knocking on her office door and I
- 11:35Speaker 3: was like, hey, Liz, like and she was like, Jenny,
- 11:37Speaker 3: you know, you're on the team. Like, obviously, you made
- 11:40Speaker 3: the team. But I just still wanted her to say it.
- 11:43Speaker 3: So it was crazy. I mean, I truly got cut.
- 11:46Speaker 3: Emailed her back, said, please give me a shot. I
- 11:49Speaker 3: want to do whatever it takes to prove you wrong.
- 11:51Speaker 3: And It worked, and I played all four years, and
- 11:54Speaker 3: I ended up kind of earning scholarships along the way,
- 11:57Speaker 3: and it was an amazing experience, and I can't imagine
- 12:00Speaker 3: my BU time without lacrosse. I met Matt through playing lacrosse.
- 12:05Speaker 3: Just so many things. I think I truly was supposed
- 12:08Speaker 3: to be on that team. It took me a little
- 12:11Speaker 3: longer to get there, but yeah, that's my whatever-it-takes personal moment.
- 12:15Speaker 1: Wow, I absolutely love that. Were you always, do you
- 12:18Speaker 1: think you were always like that as a kid, young girl?
- 12:23Speaker 3: I was pretty confident and driven and not afraid to
- 12:27Speaker 3: share my opinion.
- 12:29Speaker 2: Although, you know, that's the part that's so crazy.
- 12:32Speaker 3: Like, I just, I've never had that thought before. Like,
- 12:36Speaker 3: I'm going to email a coach back after not making
- 12:38Speaker 3: the team. And maybe in a lot of ways, I
- 12:40Speaker 3: often did make the team. So I wasn't used to
- 12:42Speaker 3: that feeling. But yeah, I was not good enough when
- 12:45Speaker 3: I tried out. I know the level of my right
- 12:48Speaker 3: hand was not there.
- 12:49Speaker 2: So that was clear.
- 12:51Speaker 3: And I just felt like I needed more time to
- 12:54Speaker 3: to get better. And I'm just so grateful that I
- 12:57Speaker 3: was able to play the four years. And I, you know, Liz,
- 13:00Speaker 3: who is not the head coach anymore, but she's still
- 13:03Speaker 3: watches me like she'll send me notes at times like
- 13:06Speaker 3: about about, you know, watching me as a reporter and
- 13:09Speaker 3: remembering that.
- 13:09Speaker 2: So I think it's just one of those. It was
- 13:12Speaker 2: supposed to happen.
- 13:13Speaker 3: And I'm glad I followed that gut instinct to to.
- 13:17Speaker 2: Follow up there.
- 13:18Speaker 3: And she was she there the whole four years? She
- 13:21Speaker 3: was there the whole four years. And she had also
- 13:24Speaker 3: just gotten the job at BU. The previous coach left
- 13:29Speaker 3: kind of unexpectedly. So I think she was new. She
- 13:33Speaker 3: was like, I'm new.
- 13:35Speaker 2: You're new. You know, why not?
- 13:37Speaker 3: I can give this girl a try. But it's so,
- 13:40Speaker 3: I should probably ask her. Like, she really didn't have
- 13:43Speaker 3: to do that.
- 13:44Speaker 2: No, she didn't. And give me that opportunity.
- 13:46Speaker 1: I mean, she could have gave you an opportunity, but
- 13:48Speaker 1: she sounds like she Gave you the opportunity and said
- 13:52Speaker 1: you were on the team.
- 13:53Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
- 13:54Speaker 2: So I made the team. Pretty cool. And I knew it.
- 13:56Speaker 2: At the end of the month, though, I did know
- 13:57Speaker 2: I was good enough.
- 13:58Speaker 3: It wasn't like, oh, no, I'm still not good enough,
- 14:01Speaker 3: but I'm going to convince myself, convince everyone to let
- 14:04Speaker 3: me stay. So that was just, I just think back
- 14:07Speaker 3: on how different my BU experience would have been. I
- 14:10Speaker 3: actually went out to the sailing team. for like a
- 14:13Speaker 3: day before lacrosse tryouts had happened. I was like, well,
- 14:16Speaker 3: this ain't it. It's not sailing. So I really wanted
- 14:19Speaker 3: to be.
- 14:20Speaker 2: Lacrosse needs to work. I just wanted lacrosse. And maybe
- 14:23Speaker 2: I would have tried to walk onto the hockey team.
- 14:26Speaker 3: That's another thing that sometimes comes to mind because I
- 14:29Speaker 3: was close with the ice hockey coach. He was a
- 14:32Speaker 3: pretty legendary women's ice hockey coach. And I really, I
- 14:36Speaker 3: liked him a lot. And I'm like, I think I
- 14:37Speaker 3: would have maybe been a better ice hockey player in
- 14:40Speaker 3: the end. But look, I'm just glad that lacrosse happened.
- 14:43Speaker 3: And yeah, that's my story.
- 14:46Speaker 2: I love that. Worked out. It's no surprise with your
- 14:49Speaker 2: resilience and hard work now and what you're doing. That's
- 14:53Speaker 2: really cool. Well, thank you.
- 14:55Speaker 3: I'm like trying to think if I ever get cut
- 14:56Speaker 3: from any broadcast things.
- 14:58Speaker 2: Actually, guys, you have this wrong. Please give me another shot.
- 15:01Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 15:02Speaker 2: I mean, I wouldn't be surprised. Yeah, I'll probably will
- 15:04Speaker 2: do that one day.
- 15:05Speaker 3: But yeah.
- 15:06Speaker 2: Yeah. confident me back at.
- 15:08Speaker 1: BU drove through campus the other day that's great that's
- 15:13Speaker 1: awesome also we're old I feel old I know my
- 15:16Speaker 1: academic advisor I'm friends with actually started at Rutgers the
- 15:20Speaker 1: same time that I did and she just reminded me
- 15:23Speaker 1: actually 2001 because of all 9-11 coming up it was
- 15:27Speaker 1: 25 years she's like you've been out of college for
- 15:31Speaker 1: 25 years I'm like Oh, my goodness.
- 15:34Speaker 2: And she's like, and I've been at Rutgers for 25 years.
- 15:36Speaker 2: I'm like, wow. That is crazy. Crazy to think about.
- 15:41Speaker 2: It really is. It's going too fast.
- 15:44Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 15:44Speaker 1: Like, if only we could go back to our younger
- 15:46Speaker 1: years of not worry about some of the stuff that
- 15:49Speaker 1: we worried about and just kind of lived a little
- 15:52Speaker 1: bit more freely.
- 15:53Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 15:55Speaker 3: And it felt so complicated at the time and hard
- 15:58Speaker 3: and busy. And, you know, now I'm around so many
- 16:02Speaker 3: college athletes. And this new era, you don't stay for
- 16:06Speaker 3: four years. And it's so wild to think back, right?
- 16:08Speaker 3: Like how different college experience would be for us now.
- 16:12Speaker 2: So different.
- 16:13Speaker 3: Had we had the opportunity. Maybe I would have transferred.
- 16:15Speaker 3: Because I didn't play a ton at BU. I did play.
- 16:18Speaker 3: Like it was still, I was still on the bottom
- 16:20Speaker 3: of the level. I mean, I played, but I was
- 16:23Speaker 3: still not our star player. I'm not going to confuse
- 16:26Speaker 3: the two. But we were really good. So I wonder, like,
- 16:30Speaker 3: if I would have had the opportunity to transfer, would
- 16:32Speaker 3: I have transferred?
- 16:33Speaker 2: Done that? I don't know.
- 16:35Speaker 3: I know.
- 16:35Speaker 1: That's a whole another topic in itself, which we could
- 16:39Speaker 1: probably bring up at one point.
- 16:41Speaker 2: Yeah, I want to hear yours.
- 16:44Speaker 1: So my whatever it takes moment from a personal standpoint.
- 16:47Speaker 1: So I am the oldest of three. I have a
- 16:53Speaker 1: younger sister who's the middle, a younger brother. All of
- 16:57Speaker 1: us played sports for the most part. We all played soccer,
- 17:02Speaker 1: but I was always... You know, I was just, that
- 17:05Speaker 1: was my obsession. I, my sister was a little bit
- 17:09Speaker 1: more social than me, kind of enjoyed hanging with her friends.
- 17:13Speaker 1: My brother, you know, kind of did both. But for me,
- 17:17Speaker 1: I was always outside practicing. I was typical tomboy growing up,
- 17:22Speaker 1: played any and all sports. Our house, we sat on
- 17:25Speaker 1: the corner in Dahlrand, New Jersey, and there were just
- 17:29Speaker 1: kids everywhere, which was so much fun. A little bit
- 17:33Speaker 1: different than Harper and this next baby we'll be growing
- 17:36Speaker 1: up with. We live a little bit more secluded on
- 17:38Speaker 1: like eight acres. So I'm like, you know, there's pros
- 17:41Speaker 1: and cons to both. But I loved, absolutely loved my
- 17:44Speaker 1: childhood because I could go outside. I could play with
- 17:47Speaker 1: the neighbor across the street, you know, play football and basketball.
- 17:52Speaker 1: And I would actually play some roller hockey in the street.
- 17:56Speaker 1: We would, you know, do all sorts of games and
- 17:58Speaker 1: tag and jailbreak games. So I just kind of navigated
- 18:02Speaker 1: through that whole life of the sports world.
- 18:06Speaker 2: And there was a select team.
- 18:10Speaker 1: I played town or rec soccer in Duran and then,
- 18:15Speaker 1: you know, moved to travel. And unlike today's day and
- 18:20Speaker 1: age where kids are specializing at the age of five, six,
- 18:24Speaker 1: or seven, or, you know, getting a personal trainer at
- 18:27Speaker 1: those ages or jumping right to clubs, I kind of
- 18:31Speaker 1: took my time a little bit, and I was actually
- 18:33Speaker 1: one of the first few that kind of considered leaving
- 18:38Speaker 1: the town team, which was a huge deal.
- 18:40Speaker 2: Okay.
- 18:41Speaker 1: So I had this opportunity for the select team to
- 18:45Speaker 1: try out, and I went. It was, you know, I
- 18:50Speaker 1: think I was entering middle school age. And believe it or.
- 18:54Speaker 2: Not, I didn't make it. And I was like, whoa, like...
- 18:59Speaker 2: I mean, I thought I was pretty good. Really? And,
- 19:02Speaker 2: you know, it's funny how things work out.
- 19:04Speaker 1: Like you talk about you felt like you were meant
- 19:08Speaker 1: to play lacrosse there.
- 19:10Speaker 2: I do, yeah.
- 19:11Speaker 1: And for me, I feel like things worked out the
- 19:16Speaker 1: way that they were supposed to work out. And so
- 19:18Speaker 1: I didn't make this team. And there was a dad
- 19:22Speaker 1: who brought his daughter as well. She also didn't make
- 19:26Speaker 1: the team.
- 19:27Speaker 2: Hmm.
- 19:28Speaker 1: Their good friend didn't make the team as well. And
- 19:32Speaker 1: then there were these two other players that, you know,
- 19:37Speaker 1: were close by that didn't make the team as well.
- 19:39Speaker 2: So you had five of us that didn't make this team.
- 19:44Speaker 1: And so what the dad did was he created another
- 19:48Speaker 1: team shortly after that. And I got a letter from
- 19:51Speaker 1: him asking if I wanted to join this team. And
- 19:54Speaker 1: it was the Medford Strikers Soccer Club. Now the club was,
- 19:57Speaker 1: you know, there were other teams, other age groups. It wasn't,
- 20:01Speaker 1: I mean, we weren't, it wasn't like how clubs are
- 20:03Speaker 1: now where they're, you know, kind of fully integrated together.
- 20:08Speaker 1: Everybody sort of had their own, you know, their own
- 20:11Speaker 1: coach and their own trainer. And you maybe saw some
- 20:14Speaker 1: other teams and whatnot. And so, yeah, this dad started
- 20:18Speaker 1: the team. I was one of the five original players
- 20:21Speaker 1: that took place on this team. And it was honestly
- 20:25Speaker 1: the best team I had ever played on. And not
- 20:27Speaker 1: just from a successful standpoint. We did win two state championships.
- 20:33Speaker 1: But just the camaraderie, the friendships. The amount of time
- 20:37Speaker 1: we spent together.
- 20:38Speaker 2: I was one of... Myself and another girl were.
- 20:42Speaker 1: You know, we were a grade below everybody else. So
- 20:45Speaker 1: once everybody reached the senior level, that was pretty much
- 20:49Speaker 1: when our team had kind of dismantled and everybody went
- 20:52Speaker 1: off to college.
- 20:54Speaker 2: But we took trips together.
- 20:56Speaker 1: We... you know, traveled together. We had dinners at people's houses.
- 21:01Speaker 1: You know, we got recruited by colleges. We went to
- 21:04Speaker 1: college showcase tournaments. And that was, you know, when I
- 21:07Speaker 1: look back on my childhood, I'm like, of course I
- 21:09Speaker 1: had fun on all these other teams and fun playing
- 21:12Speaker 1: on the national team.
- 21:13Speaker 2: It's just a different type of fun.
- 21:15Speaker 1: But this was for me, like kind of where everything started,
- 21:21Speaker 1: where my dreams kind of started. I then got, you know,
- 21:24Speaker 1: offers for to go to college and And I think,
- 21:27Speaker 1: you know, my whatever it takes moment was I just
- 21:31Speaker 1: was willing to do what so many other players weren't
- 21:34Speaker 1: willing to do. And that was pretty much dedicate my
- 21:38Speaker 1: entire life to soccer because I loved it, you know,
- 21:40Speaker 1: and it was an easy choice for me to make.
- 21:43Speaker 1: But that just jumpstarted me through really everything. And my parents,
- 21:49Speaker 1: you know, I grew up, you know, my parents didn't
- 21:51Speaker 1: have a lot of money. It was expensive to play
- 21:54Speaker 1: back then, believe it or not. It's even more expensive
- 21:57Speaker 1: to play now. And I remember, you know, my dad
- 22:01Speaker 1: actually would talk about it and, you know, they were obviously,
- 22:05Speaker 1: you know, concerned about money and how they're going to
- 22:08Speaker 1: pay and this and that. And he told my mom, look,
- 22:10Speaker 1: I don't want you to complain about, not complain, but,
- 22:15Speaker 1: you know, worry or complain about money. You know, we're
- 22:20Speaker 1: going to do whatever it takes to give Carly the
- 22:24Speaker 1: opportunities that that she needs. We don't know where this
- 22:28Speaker 1: is going. We don't know if she's even going to
- 22:30Speaker 1: get a college scholarship. We know she loves it. She's
- 22:34Speaker 1: good at it. And we're going to do whatever it takes.
- 22:37Speaker 1: And so I thought that that was really cool, you know,
- 22:40Speaker 1: as parents to, yeah, I mean, to sometimes live paycheck
- 22:45Speaker 1: to paycheck and have to go away to Cocoa Beach
- 22:49Speaker 1: tournament and figure out, you know, how you're going to
- 22:51Speaker 1: pay for it.
- 22:52Speaker 2: But it just made me appreciate, you.
- 22:54Speaker 1: Know, obviously now as an adult, just appreciate the way
- 22:59Speaker 1: that I grew up. You know, I had one pair
- 23:01Speaker 1: of cleats. I had some Copa cleats that had to
- 23:03Speaker 1: last me an entire year. And I remember coming home
- 23:07Speaker 1: from training and games and cleaning them off and polishing
- 23:12Speaker 1: them up with some like leather conditioner just to make
- 23:15Speaker 1: sure that they would last. Having one ball I remember
- 23:19Speaker 1: giving my dad crap because he I had this brine
- 23:23Speaker 1: ball that was brand new. And when I was playing
- 23:26Speaker 1: through ODP, he decided to color every panel so that
- 23:32Speaker 1: no one would take because people would take the balls.
- 23:34Speaker 2: And I was like, you just destroyed my brand new ball.
- 23:38Speaker 2: I'm like, I'm forever.
- 23:39Speaker 1: I'm forever like, you know. tarnished from that um so
- 23:43Speaker 1: funny but yeah it just you know it kind of
- 23:46Speaker 1: made me appreciate a lot of things and obviously I'm
- 23:49Speaker 1: you know very grateful and it worked out you know
- 23:53Speaker 1: not every situation like that works out but that was
- 23:55Speaker 1: my kind of big moment that I would say that
- 24:00Speaker 1: yeah that just kind of laid the foundation of sort
- 24:03Speaker 1: of this trajectory of kind of where I went in
- 24:06Speaker 1: my career.
- 24:08Speaker 2: I love so much about that story, and I have
- 24:11Speaker 2: so many questions.
- 24:13Speaker 3: One thing about your parents, kind of whatever it takes
- 24:16Speaker 3: to make sure you had those opportunities, did you personally
- 24:20Speaker 3: feel that pressure?
- 24:21Speaker 1: I mean, I feel like we always, you know, when
- 24:23Speaker 1: Christmas came and we weren't a family that went out
- 24:27Speaker 1: to eat a lot, and I don't think a lot
- 24:30Speaker 1: of families did that back then, but Yeah, I mean,
- 24:33Speaker 1: I think being the oldest, I was four years older
- 24:36Speaker 1: than my sister, seven from my brother. I mean, I
- 24:39Speaker 1: knew that, you know, my parents, you know, we weren't
- 24:43Speaker 1: poor by any means, but I knew that, you know,
- 24:46Speaker 1: it took a lot out of them. It took that,
- 24:49Speaker 1: but I didn't feel any sort of pressure from that standpoint.
- 24:53Speaker 1: And like Christmas came and, you know, like we were given...
- 24:58Speaker 1: things that meant a lot to us. It wasn't like
- 25:01Speaker 1: a whole big extravaganza of gifts or like what Santa
- 25:06Speaker 1: was bringing. But yeah, they just made it, they made
- 25:09Speaker 1: it a great childhood for what they had and how
- 25:13Speaker 1: they could, you know, do the means of providing and
- 25:17Speaker 1: all of that. But I didn't really feel, I didn't
- 25:20Speaker 1: feel the pressure per se to make it. Like I
- 25:23Speaker 1: just watched Santa Djokovic's documentary on Amazon Prime.
- 25:27Speaker 2: I need to watch it. I don't know if you
- 25:28Speaker 2: watch that.
- 25:29Speaker 1: I need to.
- 25:29Speaker 2: Really good. Really good.
- 25:30Speaker 3: Okay.
- 25:31Speaker 1: I mean, from age 12, I mean, they were borrowing
- 25:34Speaker 1: money from people. They were asking for investments and not
- 25:37Speaker 1: only asking for investments, but him having, you know, contractually
- 25:43Speaker 1: repaying some people.
- 25:44Speaker 3: Wow.
- 25:45Speaker 1: The money that they provided and then also a percentage
- 25:47Speaker 1: on top of that. So, yeah, I didn't have anything
- 25:50Speaker 1: like that in regards to the pressure.
- 25:53Speaker 2: Interesting.
- 25:54Speaker 3: And then, How about your team that you were so
- 25:57Speaker 3: close with back then? Are you close with any of
- 26:00Speaker 3: those teammates still?
- 26:02Speaker 1: We've tried to keep in touch. I mean, we have
- 26:04Speaker 1: so many memories. And unfortunately, the coach, he had passed away.
- 26:08Speaker 1: You know, very sad. The five originals, they had all
- 26:13Speaker 1: kind of come to my retirement ceremony that I had
- 26:16Speaker 1: in my town recently. And they've been to, you know,
- 26:18Speaker 1: some of the local games. Actually, one of the girls, too, within...
- 26:23Speaker 1: The last year or two passed away as well, which
- 26:27Speaker 1: is heartbreaking.
- 26:28Speaker 2: Gosh, so hard. So, you know, things get weird as
- 26:31Speaker 2: you get older.
- 26:32Speaker 1: You know, things that you never thought about as kids. And, yeah,
- 26:37Speaker 1: it was really sad because we just had so many
- 26:39Speaker 1: memories together. But we're all, you know, we all, we haven't,
- 26:42Speaker 1: it's hard now. I mean, we've had, us five originals,
- 26:45Speaker 1: we kind of kept in touch. And then there were
- 26:47Speaker 1: obviously other players who... had kind of come and gone
- 26:51Speaker 1: throughout some of the moments. Some were only maybe there
- 26:54Speaker 1: for a year.
- 26:56Speaker 2: But yeah, we had just such a fun, fun, cool team.
- 27:00Speaker 3: You were meant to be on that team, right? I mean,
- 27:02Speaker 3: that kind of goes back to there was a reason
- 27:04Speaker 3: you didn't make that team. Yeah. And that was all
- 27:07Speaker 3: by design. And I don't think that stuff happens by chance.
- 27:12Speaker 3: But I also can't imagine you getting cut from anything.
- 27:15Speaker 3: It's really hard for.
- 27:15Speaker 2: Me to picture. I know. I can't see it. Hard
- 27:18Speaker 2: to believe, but I have been, I have definitely been
- 27:20Speaker 2: cut from teams. I just, I don't know that version
- 27:24Speaker 2: of you. I just don't know it.
- 27:25Speaker 1: I know.
- 27:26Speaker 2: Oh, well, I love that story. Thank you for sharing. Yeah.
- 27:30Speaker 1: And I guess we can maybe take a quick break
- 27:33Speaker 1: and then come back to our professional whatever it takes moments.
- 27:38Speaker 2: Maybe I'll figure out the lighting. I've got like the
- 27:40Speaker 2: sun beaming in on me. Yeah.
- 27:44Speaker 1: I think I hear Harper waking up from her nap,
- 27:46Speaker 1: so it's a perfect segue into our break.
- 27:49Speaker 2: All right, go check out Harper. We'll be right back.
- 28:01Speaker 2: Welcome back to Whatever It Takes.
- 28:04Speaker 1: Harper's not crying anymore, so I think Brian grabbed her.
- 28:08Speaker 1: Changed her. She can't get enough of being outside. She
- 28:11Speaker 1: is like an outdoorsy girl.
- 28:13Speaker 2: I love that.
- 28:15Speaker 1: Loves the quad, loves the tractor, tells Brian where she
- 28:19Speaker 1: wants to go on the rides.
- 28:21Speaker 2: She's got places to be.
- 28:23Speaker 3: How do you think that she will handle a little
- 28:28Speaker 3: brother running around too?
- 28:29Speaker 2: You know what? I don't know.
- 28:31Speaker 1: I'm really curious. Today, she actually had her first day
- 28:35Speaker 1: of school.
- 28:36Speaker 2: Yeah, how did that go? I meant to ask.
- 28:37Speaker 1: I mean, preschool, two and a half hours, two days
- 28:40Speaker 1: a week. She did really well, yeah. I mean, she
- 28:42Speaker 1: got a little weird when we were leaving, but they
- 28:45Speaker 1: said she did great. She's very independent. She loves being outside.
- 28:49Speaker 1: That's her happy place. They did sort of like handprints
- 28:53Speaker 1: on a pizza box, and she didn't want to do it.
- 28:56Speaker 1: I don't know if that's my, like, OCD of, like,
- 28:59Speaker 1: wiping her hands off all the time.
- 29:02Speaker 3: Probably.
- 29:02Speaker 2: She's like, I'm not getting messy. Yeah. But, yeah, no,
- 29:05Speaker 2: it was good. It's good, so. Oh, gosh. I'm happy
- 29:08Speaker 2: that she's doing that. How old is Harper exactly? She is, like,
- 29:12Speaker 2: a month shy of two. That's what I was thinking.
- 29:15Speaker 2: She's pretty young. She just started. Two and a half. Like, yeah.
- 29:18Speaker 2: And that's the class she's in.
- 29:20Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 29:20Speaker 2: It's technically two and a half. Two and a half. Yeah,
- 29:23Speaker 2: it's good for her.
- 29:30Speaker 3: I mean, I loved the little school that Gigi... She's
- 29:32Speaker 3: at a new school now, but I love the little community.
- 29:34Speaker 2: And you meet people in the same stage, which is
- 29:37Speaker 2: kind of fun. Yes, it's all good.
- 29:39Speaker 1: My sister sent all three of her girls there. Her
- 29:42Speaker 1: youngest is actually still there. So it was so cute
- 29:44Speaker 1: when we pulled up, you know, Evie and Harper saw
- 29:47Speaker 1: Evie ran to her.
- 29:48Speaker 2: And yeah, it was exciting to see. They love seeing
- 29:52Speaker 2: each other. So it was cool. Oh, I love it. Okay, well, I.
- 29:59Speaker 2: I'm still distracted by the light. The light, yeah, you
- 30:01Speaker 2: got some.
- 30:02Speaker 3: I'm just going to go really close to talk to you.
- 30:05Speaker 3: I would love your professional whatever-it-takes moment because there's so
- 30:10Speaker 3: many directions.
- 30:11Speaker 2: You could go. Soccer, broadcasting. Curious what comes to mind.
- 30:16Speaker 2: So I think it's interesting.
- 30:18Speaker 1: I kind of like to chop up my life into
- 30:22Speaker 1: like two halves, like the first half being a youth player,
- 30:26Speaker 1: second half being, you know, kind of in the professional
- 30:29Speaker 1: realm of things. I was, the way I was as
- 30:34Speaker 1: a young girl growing up, I was very talented.
- 30:37Speaker 2: I was very driven. Like you, I always felt like
- 30:40Speaker 2: I could prove people wrong.
- 30:42Speaker 1: And if somebody told me I couldn't do something, I
- 30:44Speaker 1: was going to be able to show them that I
- 30:46Speaker 1: could do it. And so all of that, that love, passion,
- 30:50Speaker 1: that dedication for Soccer in particular is what drove me
- 30:55Speaker 1: and what laid the foundation for everything. Had I not
- 30:58Speaker 1: had that or had my parents forced me to do things,
- 31:02Speaker 1: my career wouldn't have turned out the way that it did.
- 31:04Speaker 2: So I kind of went through.
- 31:06Speaker 1: Life just being the best on all the teams I
- 31:09Speaker 1: played on. And when I talked about my personal, whatever
- 31:14Speaker 1: it takes moment of not making that team. And you
- 31:17Speaker 1: were shocked to hear that I didn't make teams. Well,
- 31:20Speaker 1: I didn't make teams. And I think that that was
- 31:23Speaker 1: an important.
- 31:24Speaker 2: Aspect to a lot of things. And I was always
- 31:29Speaker 2: used to kind of making some teams.
- 31:31Speaker 1: And as I got older, I was on the under
- 31:34Speaker 1: 21 national team and I didn't make that team. There
- 31:39Speaker 1: was a selection for a Nordic Cup tournament that happened
- 31:42Speaker 1: every summer. And I was told that I was pretty talented,
- 31:47Speaker 1: but I wasn't fit enough and just wasn't good enough
- 31:50Speaker 1: to be on the team.
- 31:51Speaker 2: And I was pretty shocked.
- 31:53Speaker 1: And immediately, my reaction was to blame the coach and
- 31:57Speaker 1: blame the players and look for excuses of any which
- 32:01Speaker 1: way that I could. And I was angry, went home,
- 32:04Speaker 1: told my parents that I didn't want to play anymore and,
- 32:08Speaker 1: you know, just take the easy way out and just
- 32:11Speaker 1: finish out my collegiate career at Rutgers University. And then
- 32:15Speaker 1: I don't know what I would do. So obviously they
- 32:18Speaker 1: didn't want to see that happen. And I, you know,
- 32:22Speaker 1: had to figure out what I wanted to do. My
- 32:26Speaker 1: dad actually introduced me to a local trainer who I
- 32:31Speaker 1: ended up working with for a really long time, which
- 32:34Speaker 1: didn't end well, um, He's pretty narcissistic and controlling and manipulative.
- 32:41Speaker 2: At the time, we obviously didn't know that.
- 32:44Speaker 1: But what's really weird is in a strange, weird way,
- 32:49Speaker 1: he still helped me. And I obviously helped him pretty
- 32:54Speaker 1: much built his entire empire on the success that I
- 32:57Speaker 1: had as a player. And so one of the big
- 33:00Speaker 1: things with me was to change my mindset. I think
- 33:06Speaker 1: when I look at my whatever it takes moment of
- 33:09Speaker 1: why I made it, of course you can say, you know,
- 33:11Speaker 1: you got to work hard and you got to be
- 33:13Speaker 1: dedicated and do all these things. But I was willing
- 33:17Speaker 1: to do what most people weren't willing to do. And
- 33:20Speaker 1: it wasn't all the easy things. It was doing all
- 33:22Speaker 1: of the things that, quite frankly, was the reason why
- 33:25Speaker 1: I didn't make the under 21 team.
- 33:27Speaker 2: Or maybe I.
- 33:28Speaker 1: Didn't reach the heights that I could have in college.
- 33:33Speaker 1: I wasn't physically fit.
- 33:34Speaker 2: I wasn't mentally strong and tough enough. I made excuses.
- 33:39Speaker 1: I pointed fingers and nothing was being looked at internally of,
- 33:44Speaker 1: you know, how can I be the best? And so
- 33:46Speaker 1: I basically changed my mindset of competing against myself, putting
- 33:51Speaker 1: myself in uncomfortable positions, doing all the things that I
- 33:54Speaker 1: absolutely hated doing. And that meant starting to run and
- 33:58Speaker 1: starting to get myself fit. What's funny is that everybody
- 34:01Speaker 1: kind of talks about my career as, being fit.
- 34:04Speaker 2: And I'm sure you have.
- 34:06Speaker 1: Only known me as being someone that.
- 34:11Speaker 2: Would do whatever it takes, right? Would run through a
- 34:14Speaker 2: brick wall.
- 34:14Speaker 1: But I actually wasn't like that for the whole first
- 34:17Speaker 1: half of my life.
- 34:20Speaker 2: It was hard for me to even go on a
- 34:21Speaker 2: 10 minute run. No way.
- 34:23Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 34:24Speaker 2: Hated it. Brian knows because, you know, we've been dating
- 34:28Speaker 2: since high school. It took me, oh man.
- 34:31Speaker 1: Those first few runs, it probably took me an hour
- 34:34Speaker 1: and a half to get myself out of the door.
- 34:36Speaker 2: What? Like you would just... To go for a 12,
- 34:39Speaker 2: 10 to 12 minute run.
- 34:40Speaker 3: Really?
- 34:40Speaker 2: I'd get like a cramp and I'd get this, yeah.
- 34:44Speaker 2: It was really difficult. I was really unfit.
- 34:46Speaker 3: So the mindset, but unfit, okay, so that's still crazy
- 34:49Speaker 3: to me. You were still playing soccer though. You just
- 34:51Speaker 3: were not needing to be more fit at the time?
- 34:55Speaker 2: I was, I was talented. I.
- 34:59Speaker 1: could do a lot of things other players couldn't do,
- 35:02Speaker 1: there would be a moment, right? And I.
- 35:07Speaker 2: Would pull something out and do something. With a natural gift.
- 35:12Speaker 2: Natural gift.
- 35:13Speaker 1: But as we know, talent alone can only get you
- 35:17Speaker 1: so far. And so once you get to the national
- 35:20Speaker 1: team level, everybody's talented. Everybody has those unique traits that
- 35:25Speaker 1: make them great, that make them part of a national
- 35:28Speaker 1: team program. And so I had to do all these
- 35:30Speaker 1: other extra things to make sure that that is what
- 35:37Speaker 1: separated me from everybody else. So I was willing to then,
- 35:41Speaker 1: I made a commitment to myself at that point, from
- 35:45Speaker 1: the moment I start to the moment I'm done, that
- 35:48Speaker 1: I'm going to commit myself to do anything possible. to
- 35:51Speaker 1: do whatever it takes. And if that meant training on
- 35:53Speaker 1: Christmas morning, I would do that. If that meant, you know,
- 35:56Speaker 1: training nine.
- 35:57Speaker 2: O'clock at night, I would do that.
- 35:59Speaker 1: If that meant I'm doing an appearance on the road
- 36:03Speaker 1: and I'm in a hotel and I can't find a
- 36:04Speaker 1: patch of grass to do some extra running, I run
- 36:07Speaker 1: the stairwell. It's just no excuses, doing whatever it takes
- 36:12Speaker 1: to make something possible.
- 36:14Speaker 2: And that was sort of, that was just my MO,
- 36:17Speaker 2: like my entire career. And I didn't stop.
- 36:20Speaker 1: And I was obsessed with improving, doing extra, everything just
- 36:25Speaker 1: kind of consumed my mind, making sure I was getting
- 36:28Speaker 1: enough reps, you know, always thinking about, well, I know
- 36:31Speaker 1: I'm training more than this person next to me and
- 36:34Speaker 1: this player, but also just focusing on myself and competing
- 36:37Speaker 1: against myself. Like no one else was my competition, but myself,
- 36:40Speaker 1: holding myself accountable. And then, you know, obviously that bled
- 36:45Speaker 1: into kind of off the field things as well, all
- 36:48Speaker 1: the opportunities that I had and making sure I treat
- 36:50Speaker 1: people with respect and even people that could never do
- 36:54Speaker 1: anything for me. You know, that was just, I always
- 36:57Speaker 1: wanted to make people feel good about themselves and be
- 37:01Speaker 1: respectful of them. And yeah, taking reps, doing speaking engagements,
- 37:06Speaker 1: preparing for interviews. I was telling you before, I believe
- 37:09Speaker 1: in one of the interviews, one of the episodes that
- 37:12Speaker 1: we did.
- 37:12Speaker 2: Of, you know, that essentially helped my TV.
- 37:16Speaker 1: To this very, very day, you know, and doing that.
- 37:21Speaker 2: So, Yeah, I think that was the biggest thing is
- 37:24Speaker 2: just kind of that shift in mindset.
- 37:26Speaker 1: And I had to really do a complete like 360.
- 37:30Speaker 3: Do you remember the day where you made that commitment
- 37:34Speaker 3: to yourself or the situation? Were you at training? Was
- 37:38Speaker 3: this a conversation with your coach? And you just said, look,
- 37:41Speaker 3: I'm committing to this. I'm going to always do more.
- 37:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 37:46Speaker 1: Yeah, it was kind of, you know, sitting down with
- 37:48Speaker 1: him and talking about what I wanted. And I obviously
- 37:52Speaker 1: wanted to play on the U.S. Women's National Team. That
- 37:54Speaker 1: was my goal. And I would say that I was 90% there, right?
- 38:00Speaker 1: There's all these small margins when you get to the top,
- 38:04Speaker 1: but they make all the difference. So that extra 10%
- 38:08Speaker 1: of somebody believing in me, somebody helping me, steer me
- 38:14Speaker 1: in the right direction, change my mindset, you know, those
- 38:18Speaker 1: things were something that I needed that I really hadn't
- 38:22Speaker 1: gotten up until that point. So it was sitting down,
- 38:25Speaker 1: it was committing to that and saying, okay, like these
- 38:28Speaker 1: are the things I'm going to have to do.
- 38:30Speaker 2: It's not going to be easy. And it was not easy.
- 38:32Speaker 1: I mean, the beginning of, you know, having to barely
- 38:35Speaker 1: being able to run 10 minutes straight as a soccer player.
- 38:39Speaker 1: I mean, that's really quite embarrassing to then running 90
- 38:43Speaker 1: minutes straight. Like that was my goal.
- 38:45Speaker 2: And then it just became, it became part of me.
- 38:49Speaker 1: It became so easy to just go out and go
- 38:52Speaker 1: for a run and do what I needed to do.
- 38:54Speaker 2: And there were moments though, where I had.
- 38:57Speaker 1: To push myself a little bit more. And then again,
- 39:00Speaker 1: I feel like kind of every moment you get to
- 39:04Speaker 1: where you're pushing yourself a little bit more, it does
- 39:07Speaker 1: get a little harder. But then once you hit that threshold,
- 39:10Speaker 1: like then your body can be pushed even more. It
- 39:12Speaker 1: just is this cycle of just, yeah, pushing your body
- 39:16Speaker 1: to limits that you don't think you can, but the
- 39:20Speaker 1: mind is the most powerful thing. So yeah, I don't
- 39:23Speaker 1: think I was giving myself as much credit as I
- 39:27Speaker 1: should have because I was the woman in the arena. Yes,
- 39:30Speaker 1: I had someone helping me and people helping me, but
- 39:34Speaker 1: I was actually the one that was getting the job
- 39:36Speaker 1: done inside that arena.
- 39:38Speaker 2: Yeah, you had to show up.
- 39:40Speaker 3: And do you enjoy the running and the fitness now?
- 39:45Speaker 3: I mean, I know being pregnant is a different scenario,
- 39:47Speaker 3: but the work that went into your fitness, like, do
- 39:50Speaker 3: you still take joy in that?
- 39:52Speaker 1: It's definitely harder. I mean, I've been out of the
- 39:55Speaker 1: game now for five years, which is crazy. I think
- 39:57Speaker 1: this November will be five years. It was Carly. I don't, yeah, this,
- 40:02Speaker 1: this episode, I'm not sure when this episode will be dropping,
- 40:04Speaker 1: but I will definitely have had the baby by then.
- 40:09Speaker 1: So yeah, two, two kids later, I thought that I
- 40:12Speaker 1: was going to still have the passion to not hardcore train,
- 40:17Speaker 1: but like go out and it'd be easy, but it
- 40:21Speaker 1: wasn't that easy because I felt like it was, it
- 40:24Speaker 1: consumed me so much and I was motivated by wanting
- 40:28Speaker 1: to be the best that I possibly could be. So
- 40:31Speaker 1: it was easy to get myself out and go do that.
- 40:34Speaker 1: I think now it's turned into burning calories and just
- 40:38Speaker 1: keeping myself healthy and moving. But I am looking forward to,
- 40:41Speaker 1: you know, post-pregnancy of like getting myself back fit and
- 40:45Speaker 1: healthy and just all the things. But it was a
- 40:49Speaker 1: harder adjustment than I had thought. That makes sense.
- 40:54Speaker 2: Yeah, no, it does make sense. I went on a
- 40:57Speaker 2: run today.
- 40:57Speaker 3: It was like, I was back to the, it's hard
- 41:00Speaker 3: for me to run 10 minutes vibes today, but I
- 41:02Speaker 3: did it.
- 41:03Speaker 2: How long did you run?
- 41:03Speaker 1: I put it off.
- 41:04Speaker 2: I ran like three miles. It was slow. That's good.
- 41:07Speaker 3: It was a beautiful day in Boston. Frankly, the running
- 41:10Speaker 3: for me is more the mental I enjoy just being
- 41:14Speaker 3: outside and listening to music. I sometimes can listen to
- 41:18Speaker 3: a podcast, but most of the time I just want
- 41:21Speaker 3: to not, I just turn off my brain with a run. Yeah.
- 41:25Speaker 1: And I'm like a 20 to 30 minute runner now.
- 41:30Speaker 1: Just because I've beaten up my body so badly that,
- 41:33Speaker 1: you know, I prefer to be able to do this
- 41:36Speaker 1: as long as I can.
- 41:37Speaker 3: I think your mindset and just, I think at another episode,
- 41:41Speaker 3: we should dig into it even more, just the training
- 41:45Speaker 3: and the commitment, because I do think some listeners would
- 41:48Speaker 3: learn a lot from what you went through in that
- 41:50Speaker 3: respect and also listeners who have kids. And it still
- 41:54Speaker 3: has to be self-driven, the success. We could go in
- 41:57Speaker 3: about that, right? But how many athletes that we've now
- 42:01Speaker 3: been around, it has to come from the athlete. And
- 42:03Speaker 3: in your case, it was you. You made the choice
- 42:05Speaker 3: to be the best and you put the work in.
- 42:07Speaker 3: So it very much inspires me.
- 42:09Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. Yeah. And on the broadcasting side, just to
- 42:12Speaker 1: touch on that, like very briefly, it was, again, sort
- 42:16Speaker 1: of the same thing of just being uncomfortable.
- 42:20Speaker 2: Like I didn't want to do it. I didn't want
- 42:21Speaker 2: to enter the TV space, the media space. But I'm like,
- 42:24Speaker 2: you know what? This is what I did my entire career.
- 42:27Speaker 1: I put myself in uncomfortable positions and I worked on
- 42:31Speaker 1: things I wasn't good at and I was vulnerable and
- 42:34Speaker 1: I did it. And I was like really thankful that
- 42:37Speaker 1: I did it. So, and I'm very thankful that I
- 42:39Speaker 1: tried to be a studio analyst.
- 42:42Speaker 2: I love it. I love, I mean, thank goodness. Because
- 42:43Speaker 2: we probably wouldn't be doing our podcast together at all.
- 42:46Speaker 3: Oh, I'm so glad. Who would have thought? I always
- 42:49Speaker 3: think back on 2015. Jenny and Carla are going to
- 42:52Speaker 3: have a podcast one day.
- 42:53Speaker 2: That I love. I love the visual of the beginning.
- 42:56Speaker 3: Well, I love your story and I think it does
- 42:59Speaker 3: serve as a great reminder for so many that the
- 43:02Speaker 3: mindset and the strength needed, you can accomplish what you
- 43:06Speaker 3: want to accomplish if you put your mind to it,
- 43:07Speaker 3: which you're the perfect example of that. So I think
- 43:10Speaker 3: we should take a quick break and I will share
- 43:13Speaker 3: my professional whatever it takes moment after the break.
- 43:28Speaker 2: All righty. Welcome back.
- 43:29Speaker 1: To whatever it takes I'm out of breath because I
- 43:33Speaker 1: need to have this baby ASAP sitting here sitting sitting
- 43:38Speaker 1: has now become very uncomfortable we can.
- 43:41Speaker 3: Do standing podcasts together I know I know I'm like
- 43:45Speaker 3: yeah the sitting I can imagine that's it's time you're feeling.
- 43:49Speaker 1: It low feeling it but anyway so I've shared my
- 43:52Speaker 1: whatever it takes moment from a professional standpoint and now
- 43:56Speaker 1: it's time to hear yours.
- 43:59Speaker 2: Well, thank you.
- 44:00Speaker 3: It's fun to think about these because it does feel
- 44:03Speaker 3: like in various stages of life, we have examples. So
- 44:07Speaker 3: I'm going to share, you know, my early days at Fox.
- 44:11Speaker 3: And we've talked a little bit about it in some
- 44:13Speaker 3: other podcasts. But, you know, I got the job at
- 44:16Speaker 3: FS1 in 2013, moved to LA, knew no one, really
- 44:22Speaker 3: believed I should be a reporter and believed in myself.
- 44:25Speaker 3: But They hired me really without any idea of what
- 44:28Speaker 3: I would do. I got hired as a desk reporter,
- 44:31Speaker 3: and it was three things you need to know. So
- 44:33Speaker 3: I would come on air and we'd say, hi, I'm Jenny,
- 44:36Speaker 3: and here are three things you need to know happening
- 44:39Speaker 3: in sports today. That is since, you know, disappeared, that role.
- 44:43Speaker 3: But it was a great way to get in the door.
- 44:45Speaker 3: So I think I a little bit shared this story
- 44:47Speaker 3: with you, but my first real big break at Fox
- 44:49Speaker 3: was covering motocross.
- 44:51Speaker 2: And I a little bit lied.
- 44:53Speaker 3: I feel like lying isn't great to admit, but Jacob Ullman,
- 44:57Speaker 3: who's still at Fox, and a dear friend because he
- 45:00Speaker 3: really ultimately also trusted, you know, me enough to give
- 45:04Speaker 3: me the audition in the first place.
- 45:05Speaker 2: To get to FS1.
- 45:06Speaker 3: But he and I were passing each other in the
- 45:08Speaker 3: hallway and he was like, what do you know about motorcycles?
- 45:11Speaker 2: And I said, oh, Ricky Carmichael, he's the GOAT. And
- 45:14Speaker 2: that is true. I did know that. But that was it.
- 45:17Speaker 2: That was the extent of my moto knowledge.
- 45:19Speaker 3: And my brother had been a motorcycle fan, or at
- 45:21Speaker 3: least he was a BMX fan, you know, like the
- 45:24Speaker 3: video games back in the day and So I knew so,
- 45:27Speaker 3: so little. And they were looking for a reporter to
- 45:29Speaker 3: cover Supercross. It's going to air on FS1. It was
- 45:33Speaker 3: a 17-week season. So I would travel.
- 45:37Speaker 2: I know.
- 45:38Speaker 3: And I did it for five years, which thinking about
- 45:40Speaker 3: that now, a couple of years, I would do football.
- 45:44Speaker 3: Once I finally got the chance to cover football, I
- 45:46Speaker 3: was doing a football season and a Supercross season. So
- 45:49Speaker 3: I was pretty much on the road for two full
- 45:52Speaker 3: football seasons back to back. But I got a chance
- 45:56Speaker 3: to cover Supercross, and I had the most amazing producers
- 46:02Speaker 3: and teammates and, you know, co-workers because they all embraced
- 46:05Speaker 3: me and welcomed me, but I studied and studied and
- 46:09Speaker 3: learned it and just became a part of that Supercross community,
- 46:14Speaker 3: so much so that I still watch the races. You know,
- 46:16Speaker 3: some of the riders I'm still in contact with, their families,
- 46:20Speaker 3: but it was... this whatever it takes, I will do
- 46:23Speaker 3: whatever it takes to figure out this job, to learn
- 46:26Speaker 3: this sport. And it was so scary, but it was
- 46:31Speaker 3: also so rewarding at the same time. So I like
- 46:33Speaker 3: to remind reporters, the dream might be college football, and
- 46:37Speaker 3: I'm so glad, or football, that I'm covering it, but
- 46:39Speaker 3: that doesn't have to be the start. Like, you can
- 46:41Speaker 3: cover anything. You can learn any single sport. You can
- 46:44Speaker 3: learn anything. Like, you're never too old. You know, I
- 46:48Speaker 3: know a ton about ice hockey. I've never really worked
- 46:50Speaker 3: in it.
- 46:51Speaker 2: But it's just the repetition of... It's the reps.
- 46:54Speaker 1: Yes.
- 46:54Speaker 2: And Supercross was that.
- 46:56Speaker 1: I cannot imagine Super... I mean, it's not like you're
- 46:59Speaker 1: coming into this and it's like, I don't know, field hockey.
- 47:05Speaker 2: It was Supercross. So I knew nothing. Nothing.
- 47:07Speaker 3: And the thing about the sport that is so cool,
- 47:11Speaker 3: these are athletes that are incredibly talented. I would put
- 47:14Speaker 3: their fitness up against any sport because if you think
- 47:17Speaker 3: of it, almost like a jockey on a motorcycle and
- 47:20Speaker 3: how heavy a motorcycle is and how fit these guys are.
- 47:22Speaker 3: Their cycling, their fitness is just endurance. It's the cardiovascular training,
- 47:28Speaker 3: the endurance. I mean, just incredible athletes. And I absolutely
- 47:33Speaker 3: loved doing this. Like it was the highlight. One of
- 47:36Speaker 3: the highlights of my career was covering a sport I
- 47:38Speaker 3: knew nothing about with amazing people, amazing athletes.
- 47:42Speaker 2: And it was on.
- 47:43Speaker 3: Fox for five years. I think I did all five years.
- 47:47Speaker 3: So it ended up, it didn't get re-signed by FS1,
- 47:51Speaker 3: but I still watch it. I mean, I've gone to
- 47:53Speaker 3: the races. I'm in touch with one of the chiropractors who,
- 47:58Speaker 3: if you can put Supercross guys, moto guys back together,
- 48:01Speaker 3: you're a really good chiropractor.
- 48:02Speaker 2: It's a great sign.
- 48:03Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 48:03Speaker 2: And he's in Newport.
- 48:05Speaker 3: And I just visited him when I was there for
- 48:06Speaker 3: the World Cup and got an adjustment and just saw him.
- 48:09Speaker 3: So I just think that a lot of people, I
- 48:12Speaker 3: remember some other people that I worked with kind of
- 48:14Speaker 3: looking down on Supercross in a way of like, oh,
- 48:17Speaker 3: you're going to go cover motorcycle racing. And it was
- 48:21Speaker 3: the best thing that ever happened to me. So I
- 48:22Speaker 3: always just say, take the job, do the homework, you'll
- 48:26Speaker 3: figure it out.
- 48:27Speaker 2: And get the reps because Supercross, I was always on air.
- 48:31Speaker 2: I would do broadcasts.
- 48:32Speaker 3: It was actually one French rider, Melvin Musquin, and I
- 48:37Speaker 3: remember interviewing him in French. Like, had I not done
- 48:40Speaker 3: that at Supercross, there's no way I would have had
- 48:42Speaker 3: the confidence to do it with the French national team
- 48:44Speaker 3: at a World Cup. It's another whatever it takes a
- 48:47Speaker 3: little bit because my French isn't perfect, but I found
- 48:50Speaker 3: a way to make it work.
- 48:51Speaker 2: It sounded good to me.
- 48:52Speaker 3: You know.
- 48:53Speaker 2: It was good enough. It wasn't perfect.
- 48:55Speaker 1: And maybe if you had just gone right into college
- 48:59Speaker 1: football or some other big sport, not that there was
- 49:03Speaker 1: room for error for you, but you probably didn't feel
- 49:06Speaker 1: a whole lot of sense of enormous pressure, right?
- 49:10Speaker 2: So you could try to make some mistakes.
- 49:13Speaker 3: I did feel pressure because I was so new into
- 49:17Speaker 3: the sport. I was very aware of how I would
- 49:21Speaker 3: talk about the riders and the racing and the whoops
- 49:24Speaker 3: and the jumps. And I was just so aware that
- 49:27Speaker 3: I didn't want to make a mistake. But I also
- 49:29Speaker 3: really believed in my storytelling. And I agree with you.
- 49:32Speaker 3: You know, you have to get your rep somewhere. I
- 49:34Speaker 3: don't care if you go pretend to go if you
- 49:37Speaker 3: go if you want to be a reporter. I think now, too,
- 49:40Speaker 3: I get a lot of college students who want to
- 49:42Speaker 3: do what I'm doing. And I always say, well, what
- 49:44Speaker 3: are you doing now? And it's kind of hard for
- 49:46Speaker 3: me if they're not doing anything in terms of practicing.
- 49:49Speaker 3: Because nowadays, go to a high school football game, set
- 49:53Speaker 3: up a camera, and just pretend. Make up stories. Pretend
- 49:57Speaker 3: like you're going to interview the coach. You really can
- 49:59Speaker 3: practice nowadays. So for me, covering racing was this great
- 50:05Speaker 3: chance to do something totally new.
- 50:07Speaker 2: And there was... less pressure, yes, than a football game.
- 50:10Speaker 3: But, you know, Supergrass has this loyal fan base that
- 50:13Speaker 3: watches every Saturday and they'll let you know if.
- 50:18Speaker 2: You make a mistake.
- 50:19Speaker 3: So it was still very apparent that, you know, people
- 50:22Speaker 3: are watching and listening and in TV they always are.
- 50:25Speaker 3: But I just, I remember I got this huge book
- 50:28Speaker 3: about motorcycles, you know, and I just studied it and
- 50:31Speaker 3: I studied it, you know, I learned from others and
- 50:34Speaker 3: I absolutely loved it. So it's, Just you never know
- 50:37Speaker 3: what opportunities will come your way. But if you didn't
- 50:40Speaker 3: take that, what would have happened? I would not have
- 50:43Speaker 3: covered you at a World Cup.
- 50:44Speaker 1: So because you didn't know the sport and you had
- 50:46Speaker 1: to prepare a lot, did that help your preparation for
- 50:51Speaker 1: then going into all the other TV stuff that you did?
- 50:54Speaker 3: Sure.
- 50:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that's a great point.
- 50:56Speaker 3: I think so much of what I do, you know,
- 51:00Speaker 3: nowadays you just I had a girl shadow me last
- 51:03Speaker 3: weekend and she was like, how do you prepare for teams?
- 51:05Speaker 3: And there's no perfect way. I, especially in college football,
- 51:10Speaker 3: the teams change every week for me. I get lucky
- 51:12Speaker 3: that I have a, you know, this week I'm going
- 51:13Speaker 3: to Ohio State and then I'm going to have Ohio
- 51:15Speaker 3: State back to back. Incredible that I can just be
- 51:17Speaker 3: with teams back to back. But it really is just
- 51:20Speaker 3: deep diving on all the teams, players, just storylines. I
- 51:23Speaker 3: almost go down these crazy Google searches and just see what,
- 51:26Speaker 3: where I find stories and themes. You're watching a lot
- 51:29Speaker 3: of games with Supercrosses. With that as an example, I
- 51:32Speaker 3: would watch races back. I would watch what other reporters
- 51:35Speaker 3: would do. I would watch myself back. I mean, I
- 51:37Speaker 3: used to rewatch myself a lot.
- 51:40Speaker 2: And now I do. Which isn't easy. It's not easy.
- 51:44Speaker 2: It's not easy.
- 51:45Speaker 3: I mean, I just watched my report from halftime last
- 51:48Speaker 3: weekend because I thought I said something a little bit
- 51:51Speaker 3: weird and I actually didn't.
- 51:52Speaker 2: My hair looked bad. Like, I don't love watching myself back.
- 51:56Speaker 2: No one wanted to tell me just to like Uh-huh.
- 51:59Speaker 2: Your crew didn't tell you? I got to remind them, no.
- 52:02Speaker 3: I mean, it was a small minor, but, you know,
- 52:04Speaker 3: I did watch myself back and learn from it and
- 52:07Speaker 3: study it. And I'm just glad I was able to
- 52:09Speaker 3: get the reps of doing something like that and learning
- 52:13Speaker 3: a sport.
- 52:13Speaker 2: And it was just, it changed my life. So that's
- 52:16Speaker 2: a fun one for me. Yeah, I love that.
- 52:18Speaker 1: I mean, I think that's where I'm like, we're very
- 52:21Speaker 1: similar because I think nowadays, like you mentioned, today's generation,
- 52:27Speaker 1: they almost want to skip all these steps. And we've
- 52:30Speaker 1: talked on our pod before about the long game approach
- 52:33Speaker 1: and just doing all the steps that maybe aren't directly
- 52:39Speaker 1: as to what you want in your life or you're
- 52:42Speaker 1: striving for, but all these little steps just add up
- 52:45Speaker 1: and the repetition. And for me, speaking and taking some
- 52:51Speaker 1: of these small speaking engagements to little companies in the
- 52:55Speaker 1: beginning of my career, which I absolutely hated and was uncomfortable,
- 52:58Speaker 1: but then essentially has helped me now in my life,
- 53:02Speaker 1: you know, and, and doing all that and speaking publicly.
- 53:05Speaker 1: But I think that's what's, you know, you and I
- 53:08Speaker 1: both have just taken these opportunities and done whatever it takes.
- 53:12Speaker 2: And, you know, I mean, I don't know if I
- 53:15Speaker 2: could cover. You could.
- 53:16Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean, I know Brian, he does do a
- 53:20Speaker 1: little dirt bike riding and stuff.
- 53:22Speaker 2: Do you guys have a dirt bike in your backyard?
- 53:24Speaker 1: I mean, he does. I can't figure out the... I'm
- 53:27Speaker 1: a four-wheel girl.
- 53:29Speaker 3: Yeah. It's not a sport, as much as I enjoyed it,
- 53:32Speaker 3: it's a dangerous sport that I would have a hard
- 53:34Speaker 3: time watching my kids.
- 53:35Speaker 2: If they really wanted to... It's going to be hard.
- 53:37Speaker 3: If our kids are passionate about whatever they want to do,
- 53:40Speaker 3: of course, we're going to probably want to support them.
- 53:42Speaker 3: But that wouldn't be one I would push purely because
- 53:44Speaker 3: I've just seen so many injuries.
- 53:45Speaker 2: But I think a lot of people in that world
- 53:47Speaker 2: would say the same thing.
- 53:48Speaker 3: I mean, I've... There were times during Supercross, and there's
- 53:51Speaker 3: one specifically that I remember where I did not know if.
- 53:54Speaker 2: Someone was okay. Yikes.
- 53:57Speaker 3: And I'm going over there to find out. Of course,
- 53:59Speaker 3: there's a medical crew, but there are just some really,
- 54:02Speaker 3: really gnarly, dangerous injuries. But also, there's so much fitness
- 54:06Speaker 3: in it as well. And I just have so much
- 54:09Speaker 3: respect for them. Even NASCAR, race car drivers, Formula One.
- 54:13Speaker 3: I think when you don't know about the sport, you
- 54:16Speaker 3: don't know what it entails and what goes through it.
- 54:20Speaker 3: But yeah, those, those guys and gals. Yeah.
- 54:24Speaker 2: There's some gals. I know.
- 54:25Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
- 54:26Speaker 2: There's guys and gals. So where would you be stationed
- 54:29Speaker 2: when you were covering Supercross?
- 54:31Speaker 3: Supercross is fun because there's two different seasons in the,
- 54:35Speaker 3: the sport is motocross, right? There's a summer like season
- 54:39Speaker 3: and then there's Supercross, which is kind of the winter.
- 54:41Speaker 3: It starts after the new year and they race in stadiums. So,
- 54:45Speaker 3: The locations were actually very fun. Like we would be
- 54:47Speaker 3: in major stadiums. I went to see Supercross when it
- 54:51Speaker 3: was here in Boston at Gillette. So like you're in
- 54:54Speaker 3: major stadiums. So that's kind of fun. Like we'd go
- 54:56Speaker 3: to MetLife. We would go all over the place. So
- 54:59Speaker 3: I had a really good time kind of experiencing the
- 55:01Speaker 3: racing in that way.
- 55:02Speaker 2: And the fans are obsessed. Like they show up. So
- 55:06Speaker 2: it has a following. It has a niche audience. I
- 55:09Speaker 2: still get messages on my social like, come back to Supercross.
- 55:13Speaker 2: That's cool.
- 55:14Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 55:14Speaker 2: And Jamie Little. Yeah, it really is.
- 55:17Speaker 3: She's a great, we should have her on the podcast.
- 55:19Speaker 3: She's Fox's best of the best NASCAR reporter.
- 55:22Speaker 2: I don't know if, have you met Jamie before? I
- 55:24Speaker 2: don't know. I don't think I have. She's awesome. And she,
- 55:28Speaker 2: it's so fun. Her first big break was Supercross too. Oh,
- 55:31Speaker 2: no way.
- 55:32Speaker 3: And we kind of look alike. Like we look enough
- 55:36Speaker 3: alike where people are like, are you guys sisters? Like,
- 55:39Speaker 3: Some people would say, is this Jamie's sister doing Supercross now?
- 55:42Speaker 3: And her first big gig was Supercross racing, and now
- 55:45Speaker 3: she obviously covers NASCAR. So she's stayed in that moto world.
- 55:48Speaker 3: But we laugh about how it was just this big
- 55:52Speaker 3: break for both of us. And we should get her
- 55:54Speaker 3: on the pod. She's really, really great. And I think
- 55:56Speaker 3: NASCAR reporting is a fascinating gig.
- 55:59Speaker 2: So did she want to stay kind of in that?
- 56:01Speaker 1: She did.
- 56:02Speaker 2: Or she just happened to? She did. Yeah, I think
- 56:04Speaker 2: a little of both. She ended up at ESPN for
- 56:06Speaker 2: a while.
- 56:07Speaker 3: And.
- 56:08Speaker 3: We'll definitely have to get her on to go back
- 56:11Speaker 3: into that story. I think she would say back then
- 56:13Speaker 3: at ESPN, if you were hired to do one thing,
- 56:16Speaker 3: you kind of stayed in that role. So I'm not
- 56:19Speaker 3: sure if they had Supercross or if she just got
- 56:21Speaker 3: hired after Supercross to do NASCAR at ESPN.
- 56:25Speaker 2: And she's fascinating.
- 56:27Speaker 3: She was pregnant as a NASCAR reporter wearing those crazy
- 56:30Speaker 3: fire suits with this huge belly and just working, working, working.
- 56:34Speaker 3: And I very much respect her.
- 56:36Speaker 2: Right there, right? And you're in it.
- 56:39Speaker 3: So I think back then she kind of just did
- 56:42Speaker 3: racing and then Fox hired her. Gosh, she's probably been
- 56:45Speaker 3: back at Fox Sports for maybe 10 years now. She's
- 56:48Speaker 3: wonderful and we'll get her on. She's a fun working mom,
- 56:53Speaker 3: two kids. She'd be a really nice discussion.
- 56:56Speaker 2: So there you just then went into what? Well, Supercross.
- 57:01Speaker 3: I did the five seasons and it was during that
- 57:05Speaker 3: run was the women's world cup too right so i
- 57:08Speaker 3: still went back to supercross after after the women's world
- 57:10Speaker 3: cup had no i think my last season was 2017
- 57:14Speaker 3: of supercross and then football opportunities kind of slowly developed
- 57:18Speaker 3: but i did have so much more confidence coming off
- 57:21Speaker 3: of supercross and the reps yeah oh yeah absolutely.
- 57:24Speaker 1: That's cool i love that well whatever it takes hey
- 57:27Speaker 1: i mean i think that's what uh has made us
- 57:31Speaker 1: both you know successful in in our fields of just
- 57:35Speaker 1: taken our opportunities and maybe those opportunities aren't, you know.
- 57:39Speaker 2: What we are exactly wanting.
- 57:41Speaker 1: I know that a lot of people want quick, instant success,
- 57:44Speaker 1: but it definitely takes time.
- 57:47Speaker 3: I love that you've said that about nowadays kids just
- 57:50Speaker 3: kind of skipping the steps, but it is a good
- 57:52Speaker 3: reminder that you have to, I don't want to say
- 57:54Speaker 3: like pay your dues because I loved the opportunity, but
- 57:57Speaker 3: you do still have to learn and grow and with
- 57:59Speaker 3: any job, like it's not going to be immediately perfect
- 58:02Speaker 3: a lot of times and It's a good reminder. And
- 58:05Speaker 3: I think both of our stories, all of our stories
- 58:07Speaker 3: are kind of that. But we're hoping our listeners can
- 58:10Speaker 3: share their whatever it takes stories, family, sports, career. We'd
- 58:14Speaker 3: love to hear from you and share them as well.
- 58:17Speaker 3: Of course, give us permission to share the story. But
- 58:20Speaker 3: I think it'd be fun to get some listener stories.
- 58:23Speaker 2: It will. Yeah, I agree.
- 58:25Speaker 1: And again, doesn't need to be anything on the professional level.
- 58:29Speaker 1: This could be your parenting approach.
- 58:32Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
- 58:32Speaker 2: Accepting some criticism from your job, your spouse, whatever it is.
- 58:36Speaker 2: But yeah, we would love to hear it. We'd love
- 58:38Speaker 2: to hear it.
- 58:39Speaker 3: Oh, well, please subscribe and rate and review whatever it takes.
- 58:44Speaker 2: I've been signing off my emails with that.
- 58:45Speaker 1: I love it. Like, share, subscribe, review, feedback. And yes,
- 58:51Speaker 1: and make sure you follow us on social media. We've
- 58:53Speaker 1: got our own socials, Jenny Taft, Carly Lloyd, and then
- 58:57Speaker 1: whatever it takes pod.
- 58:59Speaker 3: Yeah. Thank you for listening and share your stories with us.
- 59:02Speaker 3: And Carly, sending all the love your way. I hope
- 59:06Speaker 3: next time we chat, we've got a baby.
- 59:07Speaker 2: Yeah. I'm like, right now I've got a... the restroom
- 59:11Speaker 2: and stand up for a second. All right. I'll talk
- 59:15Speaker 2: to you soon.
