- 0:11Speaker 1: Moment addition, as the Bengals look to keep their playoff
- 0:15Speaker 1: hopes alive by beating Baltimore for the second time in
- 0:19Speaker 1: three weeks. Coming up, former Bengals safety Solomon Wilcotts joins
- 0:24Speaker 1: me to discuss Joe Burrow's return and how to make
- 0:27Speaker 1: sure the Bengals are not fighting for their playoff lives
- 0:31Speaker 1: at this time next year. My one on one player
- 0:34Speaker 1: interview is with a potential first time pro bowler, DJ Turner,
- 0:39Speaker 1: and in this week's Know the Faux segment, former Ravens
- 0:41Speaker 1: linebacker Brad Jackson explains what's gone wrong in Baltimore. The

- 1:19Speaker 1: since installing a new shower head. I am the world's
- 1:24Speaker 1: least handy person. I can barely fill a gas tank
- 1:28Speaker 1: or change a light bulb. But one of the showers
- 1:30Speaker 1: in our house had an old shower head, so I
- 1:33Speaker 1: replaced it this week. Now, admittedly it's not hard to do.
- 1:37Speaker 1: It required a vice grip to twist off the old one,
- 1:40Speaker 1: and then the new one was easy to screw on
- 1:43Speaker 1: by hand. But the difference after that easy do it
- 1:47Speaker 1: yourself project is a total game changer. Remember the Seinfeld
- 1:52Speaker 1: episode where Kramer bought a black market shower head that
- 1:56Speaker 1: was used to wash off elephants at the zoo. Well,
- 1:59Speaker 1: that's what it's like at our house. So the next
- 2:02Speaker 1: time you see me, if it appears that I have
- 2:05Speaker 1: just had a massage, you'll know why. Now let's get
- 2:10Speaker 1: to football. No team in the NFL has produced more
- 2:14Speaker 1: great broadcasters than Cincinnati Bob Trumpy, Chris Collinsworth, Boomer Asiasin,
- 2:20Speaker 1: and Dave Lapham, to name a few. This week, I
- 2:23Speaker 1: spoke to a former Bengals safety who hosts the opening
- 2:27Speaker 1: Drive show every weekday morning on satellite radio. You can
- 2:32Speaker 1: hear him on Sirius XM NFL Radio and on the
- 2:35Speaker 1: Believe In Bengals podcast. And this week we get to
- 2:39Speaker 1: benefit from Solomon's wisdom as we are joined by former
- 2:42Speaker 1: Bengal Solomon Wilcotts Sally. What has Joe Burrow shown you
- 2:46Speaker 1: over the last couple of weeks, both in terms of
- 2:48Speaker 1: his on the field play and his.
- 2:50Speaker 2: Leadership, that he is the ultimate competitor, that at the
- 2:54Speaker 2: end of the day, his superpowers in all quarterbacks and
- 2:58Speaker 2: you have them if you're good one right. His superpower
- 3:02Speaker 2: is what Vince Lombardi called is the talent from the
- 3:05Speaker 2: neck up, his cerebral ability to diagnose defenses, to understand
- 3:10Speaker 2: what to do, how to do it, and where to
- 3:12Speaker 2: go with the football at critical moments. And you know,
- 3:15Speaker 2: he's hit the ground running other than you know, maybe
- 3:18Speaker 2: a little rust in that first half of the game
- 3:20Speaker 2: against the Ravens on Thanksgiving Night, it's been clicking. You
- 3:25Speaker 2: saw what he did against Buffalo. He came out, they
- 3:28Speaker 2: scored on three of their first four possessions in the
- 3:31Speaker 2: first half, and then kind of got it going late. Look,
- 3:35Speaker 2: the law of averages is that you're gonna ultimately throw
- 3:37Speaker 2: an interception fourteen that throws it as much as they do,
- 3:40Speaker 2: as many dropbacks as they have, if the ball's gonna
- 3:43Speaker 2: get tipped and it's gonna come down in the opponent's hands.
- 3:45Speaker 2: But I think the Bills are very fortunate they know
- 3:48Speaker 2: that those interceptions were critical.
- 3:50Speaker 3: To them being able to win.
- 3:51Speaker 2: But at the end of the day, I'm gonna bet
- 3:55Speaker 2: on Joe and I'm riding with him. He's a competitor
- 3:58Speaker 2: and the guy is very Cerebro gives the Bengals a
- 4:01Speaker 2: chance to win each and every week.
- 4:03Speaker 1: So in his two games so far, he beat Baltimore
- 4:06Speaker 1: in Baltimore by eighteen. The Bengals obviously went toe to
- 4:10Speaker 1: toe with the Bills. That took a superman effort by
- 4:12Speaker 1: Josh Allen to allow Buffalo to come away with a
- 4:15Speaker 1: home win. If the Bengals could get into the playoffs,
- 4:18Speaker 1: and admittedly the odds are long, would they be a
- 4:22Speaker 1: scary opponent for the rest of the AFC.
- 4:24Speaker 3: Yeah, I think it's just like last year.
- 4:26Speaker 2: At the end of last year, no team wants to
- 4:28Speaker 2: see Joe Burrow, Jamar Chase the t. Higgins and particularly
- 4:34Speaker 2: the Bengals offense in the playoffs, because they already know
- 4:37Speaker 2: this is a team that can come in and beat
- 4:39Speaker 2: us even if you're playing at home.
- 4:41Speaker 3: It was kind of like the twenty twenty one season, and.
- 4:43Speaker 2: You recall because it didn't matter who they were playing, right,
- 4:47Speaker 2: they could go into anywhere into Tennessee, it gets sacked
- 4:51Speaker 2: nine times and still beat you. They can go into
- 4:53Speaker 2: arrow Hits Stadium and still beat you as long as
- 4:56Speaker 2: they've got Joe Burrow. I mean, they know that that's
- 5:00Speaker 2: a team that's very deadly and there's no team that
- 5:03Speaker 2: wants to face this team in the postseason.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Sally, you're starting safety on the Bengals nineteen eighty eight
- 5:09Speaker 1: Super Bowl team, So, you know, defense, do you see
- 5:13Speaker 1: any signs of progress on that side of the ball
- 5:15Speaker 1: right now?
- 5:16Speaker 2: You know, what I do see is just the fight
- 5:20Speaker 2: that's in this team. You are seeing some improvement with
- 5:24Speaker 2: guys like Chris Jenkins up front on the you know
- 5:27Speaker 2: you're seeing you know, DJ Turner I think has been
- 5:30Speaker 2: the most significant improvement of any player on the defense
- 5:33Speaker 2: of that young group of players that we all wanted
- 5:37Speaker 2: to see improve right and the way Dj is playing
- 5:40Speaker 2: it makes you proud. They still just so much more
- 5:45Speaker 2: improvement is needed. You know, when our offense score thirty points,
- 5:49Speaker 2: those are games that we should win. That's how I'm
- 5:52Speaker 2: looking at it, because if the defense is doing its job,
- 5:55Speaker 2: they ought to be able to hold a team under
- 5:56Speaker 2: twenty points, right, But so far this season, you know,
- 6:03Speaker 2: when we've scored thirty or more points in the six
- 6:07Speaker 2: games where it's happened, we've only won half of those games.
- 6:11Speaker 2: If you can win the other half, this team is
- 6:13Speaker 2: vying for position in the playoffs. Let mean, just think
- 6:16Speaker 2: about that. So the offense is producing at a high level.
- 6:20Speaker 2: The defense, while there has been some improvement, it needs
- 6:23Speaker 2: to get even better, particularly untackling and pass rushing.
- 6:28Speaker 3: You've got to be more disciplined.
- 6:30Speaker 2: You can't allow the quarterback to escape on a consistent
- 6:33Speaker 2: basis and hurt you with his legs like third and fifteen.
- 6:38Speaker 3: You got to be able to get off the field.
- 6:39Speaker 2: You can't allow the quarterback to just gut you with
- 6:42Speaker 2: a seventeen yard run and that essentially ended the game.
- 6:47Speaker 1: The Bengals have really had a hard time covering tight ends.
- 6:51Speaker 1: Help us understand why that's been such a big issue.
- 6:55Speaker 3: Wow. You know.
- 6:57Speaker 2: I talked about this at a Big Goes lunch in
- 7:00Speaker 2: just a week ago, and this is very critical, just
- 7:05Speaker 2: understanding how the leverage of how to cover, particularly the
- 7:11Speaker 2: middle of the field, because you have to close off
- 7:13Speaker 2: the middle of the field. Dan any quarterback in this league,
- 7:17Speaker 2: if you give them a direct thro ut right, because
- 7:20Speaker 2: they can see right down the middle of the field,
- 7:23Speaker 2: right down the pipe right, they're gonna throw that every time.
- 7:27Speaker 2: And it's about see if they see their color jersey
- 7:31Speaker 2: and there's no obstruction between themselves and that big tight end,
- 7:35Speaker 2: which is kind of like throwing the ball to a
- 7:38Speaker 2: mac truck because they're bigger.
- 7:39Speaker 3: They're like a power forward.
- 7:41Speaker 2: Who's boxing out a safety over the middle of the field. Well,
- 7:45Speaker 2: you can't allow them to cross your face. So if
- 7:47Speaker 2: I'm the safety, I can't let that player cross my face.
- 7:51Speaker 2: I've got to cut him off. I can't let It's
- 7:54Speaker 2: like being a good defender in basketball. I cannot let
- 7:58Speaker 2: you cross my face. You're gonna have to go around me,
- 8:00Speaker 2: and I'm not you know, I'm not getting even to
- 8:02Speaker 2: let you do that. So I'm gonna stay in front
- 8:04Speaker 2: of you. Because if that quarterback he's taught that if
- 8:08Speaker 2: you see your big power for it tight end across
- 8:11Speaker 2: the face of the safety, throw it because he's gonna
- 8:15Speaker 2: he's gonna shield you away from the ball.
- 8:17Speaker 3: He's gonna catch it. They're taught to trust that.
- 8:21Speaker 2: So if they see my color jersey right, they're not
- 8:24Speaker 2: gonna throw it. In fact, what we used to do
- 8:27Speaker 2: to bait quarterbacks is we try to hide behind that
- 8:30Speaker 2: tight end knowing that we still could get that intercept
- 8:33Speaker 2: angle and forcing the quarterback to throw it anyway.
- 8:37Speaker 3: But we're not doing that. We're not holding positions.
- 8:40Speaker 2: Even DJ Turner, he allowed the tight end to get
- 8:43Speaker 2: across his face, allow him to get inside. He tried
- 8:45Speaker 2: to come underneath. But a good throw is gonna beat
- 8:48Speaker 2: that position every single time. And Josh Allen soon as
- 8:52Speaker 2: he saw that big tight endcross the face of DJ Turner,
- 8:54Speaker 2: he cut it loose. And they're doing it because they're
- 8:57Speaker 2: seeing it happen week after week. You can go back
- 9:00Speaker 2: to Chicago and you saw it happen. You could go
- 9:02Speaker 2: back game after gaming. Right, it's happening, and so other
- 9:06Speaker 2: teams are saying, hey, we believe we can make these
- 9:09Speaker 2: same plays because they don't defend the middle of the
- 9:12Speaker 2: field very well in the passing game, particularly against the
- 9:15Speaker 2: tight end. So you're going to see it again this
- 9:17Speaker 2: week coming up, because last night I checked, Baltimore has
- 9:20Speaker 2: two pretty good tight ends, and Mark Andrews and Isaiah Likely.
- 9:25Speaker 1: We're visiting with Solomon Wilcott's. As Joe Burrow has said before,
- 9:29Speaker 1: his Super Bowl window is his entire career. So the
- 9:32Speaker 1: Bengals want to be back in contention as soon as possible.
- 9:36Speaker 1: Give us a few off season priorities to get the
- 9:40Speaker 1: Bengals back to where they want to be.
- 9:42Speaker 2: Number one priority is there's no way that we're going
- 9:48Speaker 2: to have an organization that have Joe Burrow as its
- 9:51Speaker 2: quarterback and be sitting here now three years.
- 9:56Speaker 3: Of missing the postseas.
- 9:58Speaker 2: I'm putting the entire building on those I'm putting everyone unnoticed,
- 10:01Speaker 2: even everything is under evaluation because it's just you and
- 10:08Speaker 2: I both know it. You can't have it happen. I mean,
- 10:10Speaker 2: these are the golden years. These should be consistent years
- 10:15Speaker 2: of getting into the playoffs when you have this kind
- 10:18Speaker 2: of player as your quarterback. Now, I know he's gotten
- 10:21Speaker 2: hurt or whatever, but at the end of the day,
- 10:23Speaker 2: those opportunities are still there. You got to say to yourself,
- 10:27Speaker 2: we got to have a backup player that comes in right.
- 10:30Speaker 3: But more importantly, you have to protect.
- 10:32Speaker 2: Him to make sure that that you can keep him healthy.
- 10:35Speaker 2: And you've got to coach and play in a way
- 10:38Speaker 2: that keeps him healthy. What does that mean, I'm playing
- 10:41Speaker 2: him under center more. And I like that about Zach Taylor.
- 10:44Speaker 2: I think since Joe has come back, we've seen him
- 10:46Speaker 2: under center more in these two games, since he's been back, then,
- 10:51Speaker 2: I think we've seen in his entire career. Now, what
- 10:54Speaker 2: does that do that helps the offensive line? It helps
- 10:58Speaker 2: slow down a pass rush, right, It helps protect your
- 11:02Speaker 2: quarterback because defenders before they can pin their ears back
- 11:06Speaker 2: and come after the quarterback Dan excuse me, they have
- 11:10Speaker 2: to decide is it a round or is it a pass?
- 11:13Speaker 2: Soon as you put the quarterback on the center, you
- 11:14Speaker 2: put more more of a pause into their evaluation. And
- 11:20Speaker 2: it's helping the process and the entire operation of the
- 11:23Speaker 2: offense in the run game and the pass game, play
- 11:25Speaker 2: action pass. It goes a long way into slowing down
- 11:29Speaker 2: the defense and protecting your quarterback. So I'm having those
- 11:33Speaker 2: conversations in the building. I've got to be able to
- 11:36Speaker 2: run the football in multiple ways, not just.
- 11:40Speaker 3: In our zone blocking scheme. But I want to see
- 11:43Speaker 3: us be more powerful.
- 11:44Speaker 2: We have big offensive tackles, we have a big offensive line,
- 11:47Speaker 2: by the way, but we're not using that leverage. We're
- 11:50Speaker 2: not pinning and pulling, we don't get a lot of
- 11:52Speaker 2: double teams, and we're not coming down here and using
- 11:57Speaker 2: the power of our offensive line in a much greater way.
- 12:00Speaker 2: That also slows down a pass rush. You want to
- 12:03Speaker 2: slow down Miles Garrett, make him defend the run some Okay,
- 12:07Speaker 2: if everything that we've been doing isn't shotgun zone reads,
- 12:11Speaker 2: our offensive lineman like Orlando Brown and Amaria's men's they're
- 12:16Speaker 2: running backwards more than they're running forwards.
- 12:19Speaker 3: So I think I think.
- 12:20Speaker 2: All of those things are under evaluation. I know Zach
- 12:23Speaker 2: Taylor knows these things. In fact, I see them doing
- 12:26Speaker 2: more of those things as of late, when Joe Flacco
- 12:28Speaker 2: came and started playing, they started to do more of
- 12:30Speaker 2: those things. And it's got to be even a higher
- 12:33Speaker 2: volume of that. We need to have a higher run
- 12:37Speaker 2: play percentage. And I know we have this great quarterback,
- 12:41Speaker 2: but if you want to help him be better, that's
- 12:44Speaker 2: what That's what Jim Harbaugh is doing for Justin Herbert.
- 12:47Speaker 2: With the LA charge, their run play percentage has gone up,
- 12:50Speaker 2: so their overall production and efficiency on offense has gone up.
- 12:55Speaker 2: I think Zach Taylor's doing a great job. We've scored
- 12:58Speaker 2: thirty or more points in fourteen games over the last
- 13:02Speaker 2: since the start of last season.
- 13:03Speaker 3: Problem is we've lost half of those games.
- 13:07Speaker 2: So that means now we got to get to the
- 13:09Speaker 2: defensive side of the ball and we've got to be
- 13:11Speaker 2: better at the point of attack. We've got to be
- 13:13Speaker 2: able to win the line of scrimmage. Teams can't run
- 13:16Speaker 2: on us with impunity. We've got to be better tacklers
- 13:20Speaker 2: at the second level. That's our linebackers, that's our safety,
- 13:23Speaker 2: that's our cornerbacks. We've got to take better angles to
- 13:27Speaker 2: the to the to the runner, and we've got to
- 13:30Speaker 2: learn that our shoulder pads are for a reason. Man,
- 13:32Speaker 2: you got to put shoulder pads on people. You can't
- 13:35Speaker 2: grab a man and get him on the ground. You
- 13:38Speaker 2: got to hit with the same foot, same shoulder on
- 13:41Speaker 2: the ball carrier, and you got to wrap him up.
- 13:44Speaker 2: Those are the three fundamentals of tackling. Same foot, same shoulder,
- 13:49Speaker 2: wrap him up, get him on the ground and you
- 13:51Speaker 2: gotta be physical.
- 13:52Speaker 3: I want to see remember when Mike Zimmer was here.
- 13:57Speaker 2: I remember the first day Mike Zimmer practice as the
- 14:00Speaker 2: defensive coordinator with the big I was blown away.
- 14:03Speaker 3: I said, thank you.
- 14:05Speaker 2: I said, we finally have someone around here who's not
- 14:08Speaker 2: afraid to hit a Chant Johnson or TJ. Hushman's out
- 14:11Speaker 2: may are you know, you got to hit those guys
- 14:13Speaker 2: in the defense has to have a priority. And I'm
- 14:16Speaker 2: not saying we got to hurt our receivers. That's not
- 14:18Speaker 2: where I'm going. But physicality is something that's practice. It's
- 14:24Speaker 2: not just mentioned. You've got to practice it every day
- 14:27Speaker 2: you step on the field. It's got to be a
- 14:28Speaker 2: point of emphasis. And I know Al Goden will get
- 14:31Speaker 2: there in his second year, so but those are just
- 14:33Speaker 2: if you're asking me. The point of emphasis is some
- 14:36Speaker 2: of the things that I'm addressing. We haven't even gotten
- 14:38Speaker 2: to personnel yet. But just from a mentality of how
- 14:42Speaker 2: the game ought to be played on both sides of
- 14:43Speaker 2: the ball, that's what I would offer.
- 14:46Speaker 1: Sally. Let's turn to the Ravens. They come to town
- 14:48Speaker 1: at six and seven. They've lost back to back home
- 14:51Speaker 1: games to Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. What's wrong with Baltimore.
- 14:55Speaker 3: I don't think Lamar Jackson is completely healthy.
- 14:59Speaker 2: This goes to show you, you know, just because the
- 15:02Speaker 2: guy's out there now you're playing with some You're playing
- 15:04Speaker 2: with some deficiencies. He's not the quarterback that we had
- 15:08Speaker 2: seen over the over the last several years when we've
- 15:11Speaker 2: played him. He's not as twitchy, he's not as mobile.
- 15:15Speaker 2: He's I think that growing injury is hindering him and
- 15:19Speaker 2: forcing him to be less elusive, even in the pocket.
- 15:24Speaker 2: I don't think their their passing game is as creative
- 15:27Speaker 2: as it once was. They're not scheming guys open as
- 15:30Speaker 2: well as they had in the past.
- 15:33Speaker 3: They seem to be out of sync in the passing game.
- 15:36Speaker 2: To be honest with you, he's really good with the
- 15:39Speaker 2: tight ends, but when he has to go to the
- 15:41Speaker 2: receivers further down the field and out on the perimeter,
- 15:44Speaker 2: unless it's off play action, it's just not there and
- 15:48Speaker 2: he's not able to buy as much time as he
- 15:50Speaker 2: used to where there's elusive abilities, where coverage breaks down.
- 15:55Speaker 2: That's what Josh Allen did to us, By the way,
- 15:57Speaker 2: stand there, run around by a little more time, stand
- 16:00Speaker 2: the play coverage can't last forever. That's something that Lamar
- 16:04Speaker 2: has been very good at and as of late, he's
- 16:06Speaker 2: not been able to do it. You know, they I
- 16:09Speaker 2: think they end up having two hundred yards rushing against
- 16:13Speaker 2: Pittsburgh last week, still lost the game. That's surprising, and
- 16:18Speaker 2: so that, you know, I want to see, Like if
- 16:20Speaker 2: you were looking, you know, I'm pulling for the Bengals
- 16:23Speaker 2: in this game, but if you want it, if you
- 16:25Speaker 2: were on their team and saying, Okay, what do they
- 16:27Speaker 2: need to do better?
- 16:28Speaker 3: I think they've got to begin to lean more into.
- 16:30Speaker 2: Derek Henry, not less with Lamar aling they should be
- 16:34Speaker 2: giving the opponent a higher dosage of Derek Henry. I
- 16:38Speaker 2: don't want to see that happen in our game once someday,
- 16:41Speaker 2: but that's probably what they will look to do the
- 16:45Speaker 2: last couple of weeks. You know, we our defense could
- 16:49Speaker 2: do a much better job at defending the run. The
- 16:52Speaker 2: Bills had over one hundred and eighty yards rushing in
- 16:55Speaker 2: that game, and I got to believe that the Baltimore
- 16:57Speaker 2: Ravens are gonna see that and lean in to that
- 17:00Speaker 2: more so.
- 17:01Speaker 1: The Bengals have a chance to beat Baltimore twice in
- 17:04Speaker 1: three weeks sweep the regular season series for the first
- 17:08Speaker 1: time since the Super Bowl year back in twenty twenty one.
- 17:10Speaker 1: Give us a few keys for the Bengals to come
- 17:12Speaker 1: out on top this week.
- 17:14Speaker 2: I think it's going to be getting defensive stops. You
- 17:16Speaker 2: got to get more turnovers like what happened last time.
- 17:19Speaker 2: I look, I don't expect them to get five turnovers
- 17:21Speaker 2: in the game. But when you fly around and you're
- 17:25Speaker 2: aggressive and your physical on defense, and believe me, the
- 17:28Speaker 2: Bengals defense was that night on Thanksgiving Night at M
- 17:31Speaker 2: and T Banks Stadium, the ball comes out and you
- 17:34Speaker 2: saw what happened with James Cook, and you know the
- 17:37Speaker 2: way that DJ Turner was flying around and flash the
- 17:40Speaker 2: ball comes out. So you have to be able to
- 17:41Speaker 2: do that. More importantly, you've got to cut off these
- 17:45Speaker 2: tight ends over the middle of the field once you
- 17:47Speaker 2: stop the run game. That's what they want to do.
- 17:49Speaker 2: They want to get the ball to Mark Andrews, they
- 17:51Speaker 2: want to get the ball to Isaiah likely force Lamar
- 17:55Speaker 2: to win throwing the ball out on the perimeter, because
- 17:58Speaker 2: I don't think he's as efficient when doing that. And
- 18:01Speaker 2: then offensively, the Ravens defense has.
- 18:05Speaker 3: Just not been good.
- 18:06Speaker 2: They're giving up a lot of points, they're giving up
- 18:08Speaker 2: a lot of big plays, and they don't like defending
- 18:12Speaker 2: against Jamar Chase.
- 18:13Speaker 3: They don't like defending against t Higgins.
- 18:16Speaker 2: And I hope he is going to be well enough
- 18:17Speaker 2: to play, and if not, Mitchell Tinsley is going to
- 18:20Speaker 2: have to just hit on a higher ratio of the
- 18:24Speaker 2: plays when he is targeted. But look, Goseki's been really good.
- 18:28Speaker 2: So we just got to continue to do what we're
- 18:31Speaker 2: doing on offense. And don't forget about Chase Brown both
- 18:34Speaker 2: in the running and receiving game, because he's a weapon
- 18:37Speaker 2: back there. And so I just think continue to be
- 18:40Speaker 2: balanced on offense, have a considerable run ratio play of
- 18:45Speaker 2: at least forty percent because that goes a long way
- 18:48Speaker 2: into helping the passing game.
- 18:49Speaker 1: Sally really appreciate your time as always. Keep up the
- 18:52Speaker 1: great work and happy holidays.
- 18:54Speaker 3: Thank you, Dan, thanks for having me, and happy holidays
- 18:57Speaker 3: to you as well.
- 18:58Speaker 1: Sally spent four years playing in the Bengals secondary and
- 19:01Speaker 1: my one on one player interview this week is with
- 19:04Speaker 1: the best member of that crew. This year. DJ Turner
- 19:08Speaker 1: leads the NFL and passes defense and is getting high
- 19:11Speaker 1: marks from Pro Football Focus. He's graded twelfth overall among cornerbacks,
- 19:16Speaker 1: and his past coverage grade is fifth best in the NFL.
- 19:21Speaker 1: AL Golden and Zach Taylor say that Turner is playing
- 19:25Speaker 1: at a pro bowl level.
- 19:26Speaker 4: We've asked him to do a really hard job each week,
- 19:31Speaker 4: take on the go to guy, and he's done it
- 19:34Speaker 4: at and performed at a.
- 19:35Speaker 5: Really, really high level.
- 19:37Speaker 4: I think he'll be the first to say, you know,
- 19:39Speaker 4: he doesn't really want to talk about any of that,
- 19:42Speaker 4: just wants to put his head down and go to work.
- 19:44Speaker 4: Certainly he should be in the conversation based on his performance,
- 19:49Speaker 4: his approach and consistency. Everybody forgets that part of it,
- 19:53Speaker 4: just a consistent part of it that separates you when
- 19:56Speaker 4: you get to that level.
- 19:57Speaker 6: He's earned all this. You know, he's not a guy
- 20:00Speaker 6: that just speaks and doesn't put in the work. I've
- 20:03Speaker 6: told you stories all season about training camp conversations with
- 20:07Speaker 6: him and just really proud of him the way he's
- 20:09Speaker 6: handled everything and the way that he just fights every week.
- 20:12Speaker 6: And you can just feel the I mean, you can
- 20:13Speaker 6: genuinely feel the confidence from him oozing off of him.
- 20:17Speaker 6: And he's he's been a tremendous asset for us. He's
- 20:21Speaker 6: a really good communicator. It's really important to him. He
- 20:25Speaker 6: understands what it means to cover their best guy. He
- 20:27Speaker 6: understands all that that entails, the good in the bad,
- 20:30Speaker 6: and he's willing to embrace it all and proud of
- 20:32Speaker 6: the season he's having. And he'll just continue to lead us.
- 20:35Speaker 6: And there's some great opportunity here starting with this game
- 20:38Speaker 6: as well, So I'm excited to watch DJ finish out
- 20:40Speaker 6: the year.
- 20:41Speaker 1: I spoke to the twenty five year old corner back
- 20:43Speaker 1: this week about his breakout season.
- 20:47Speaker 3: DJ.
- 20:47Speaker 1: We're about three weeks away from the Pro Bowl rosters
- 20:50Speaker 1: being announced now. Golden said the other day that he
- 20:53Speaker 1: believes you are deserving. Have you given it much thought
- 20:56Speaker 1: and what would it mean to be selected?
- 20:58Speaker 7: I mean, yeah, I'm definitely. I've never you know, got
- 21:00Speaker 7: it thought for sure. You know, I grew up trying
- 21:02Speaker 7: to make Pro Bowl, all Pro all that. I'm not
- 21:05Speaker 7: gonna let it determine any outcome. Yeah, that's the biggest thing.
- 21:09Speaker 1: How do you think you've improved this year? And what's
- 21:12Speaker 1: the biggest reason why?
- 21:13Speaker 7: Honestly, I just improved in every aspect of my game
- 21:17Speaker 7: and It was just from all the preparation I do,
- 21:20Speaker 7: from the hardworking off season and the body right, mental right,
- 21:23Speaker 7: and just a combination and everything.
- 21:25Speaker 1: Visiting the DJ Turner, I saw a story recently that
- 21:28Speaker 1: described how you've added daily meditation to your routine. How
- 21:32Speaker 1: did that come about?
- 21:33Speaker 7: Came about from just traveling kind of, Like I said,
- 21:38Speaker 7: I went to like a whole bunch of Southeast countries
- 21:41Speaker 7: and they talk about meditation all the time out there,
- 21:44Speaker 7: so I was like, you know, kind of looked into it,
- 21:46Speaker 7: and then I used the comap a lot. They always
- 21:48Speaker 7: talked about that son and then on the com mapp
- 21:50Speaker 7: Jay Shaddy, so they just keep telling my meditation. I
- 21:52Speaker 7: just kept on hearing it. So I was like, I
- 21:53Speaker 7: got to try it and tried it consistently. I started
- 21:57Speaker 7: meditating last year, so I'm like in a year and
- 22:00Speaker 7: you know, I'm seeing positive results.
- 22:01Speaker 1: Jay Shetty wrote a book, How to Think Like a Monk?
- 22:04Speaker 1: What does that mean to you?
- 22:06Speaker 5: How to just get mentally strong?
- 22:08Speaker 7: It's different ways to get there's a different path for everybody,
- 22:12Speaker 7: and just just really trying to perfect yourself, you know,
- 22:16Speaker 7: just know how to get yourself into, you know, your
- 22:19Speaker 7: best mental state. And it's not the same for everybody.
- 22:22Speaker 1: Representing with DJ Turner. We are so used to non
- 22:25Speaker 1: stop stimulus, looking at our phones, looking at our tablets,
- 22:29Speaker 1: et cetera. I would think that meditating might be hard.
- 22:32Speaker 1: Did you have to kind of learn how to do it?
- 22:35Speaker 7: No, for sure, it's definitely hard. Like I tell everybody
- 22:38Speaker 7: else close.
- 22:38Speaker 5: To me, and now with this platform, I'm trying to
- 22:41Speaker 5: get more people.
- 22:42Speaker 7: But like my closest friends, my family did my teammates
- 22:46Speaker 7: always say just sitting around for like fifteen minutes with nothing,
- 22:49Speaker 7: you know, and no phone, no nothing, just at the
- 22:52Speaker 7: time instead of fifteen minutes.
- 22:54Speaker 5: And you realize how long fifteen.
- 22:56Speaker 7: Minutes can really be, And so that's really it's definitely
- 22:59Speaker 7: hard for or you know, just to start out, you
- 23:01Speaker 7: do like three minutes, four minutes, five minutes, and as
- 23:03Speaker 7: gradual keep going.
- 23:04Speaker 5: But it's definitely hard to you know, do it first.
- 23:06Speaker 1: I'd give my nineteen year old son about two minutes.
- 23:08Speaker 5: Get this point for real.
- 23:10Speaker 8: For real.
- 23:11Speaker 5: I was like, that's it. Though, I was like that's
- 23:12Speaker 5: it when I first started.
- 23:14Speaker 1: We're visiting the DJ Turner. You've been following the other
- 23:17Speaker 1: team's best wide receiver more often than not describe that responsibility.
- 23:23Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean I wanted that role. I told him
- 23:26Speaker 7: I was gonna get that role.
- 23:29Speaker 5: That's yes.
- 23:30Speaker 7: I mean that I just want the best, you know,
- 23:33Speaker 7: like the best versus best. If I think I'm the best,
- 23:35Speaker 7: I'm gonna go against the best. That's really how I
- 23:37Speaker 7: think about it. And I told him that, and I've
- 23:39Speaker 7: earned that role, and that's really how I look about it.
- 23:42Speaker 1: You're currently leading the NFL and passes defense, pass breakups.
- 23:47Speaker 1: However you want to look at it with seventeen you
- 23:49Speaker 1: had five and one game against Green Bay. Now that
- 23:51Speaker 1: we're this close to the end of this season, is
- 23:54Speaker 1: it a goal of yours to lead the league in
- 23:56Speaker 1: that statistic?
- 23:57Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean it can be.
- 23:58Speaker 7: Like I said, I'm not I've gotten away from goal setting.
- 24:02Speaker 7: That's one of the things I gotten away from because
- 24:04Speaker 7: I did it Rooky year, and once numbers or stuff
- 24:08Speaker 7: like that don't go to where you want, you start
- 24:11Speaker 7: trying to make too much happen and you try to
- 24:13Speaker 7: play out your game. So, like I said, I'm I'm
- 24:16Speaker 7: not getting into like goals or anything like that. I'm
- 24:18Speaker 7: just second care of my responsibility and week by weekest
- 24:21Speaker 7: the number one receiver.
- 24:22Speaker 1: You are approaching the end of your third season with
- 24:24Speaker 1: the Bengals. After this year, you will be eligible for
- 24:27Speaker 1: a second contract. Is it your hope to sign an
- 24:31Speaker 1: extension prior to next year?
- 24:32Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean that's always a goal.
- 24:34Speaker 7: But you know, I'm a I'm gonna regather all that
- 24:37Speaker 7: after the season with my agents.
- 24:39Speaker 5: And everything like that. Like I said, right now, I
- 24:41Speaker 5: got the Ravens.
- 24:43Speaker 1: Well, let's talk about that. How does Lamar Jackson impact
- 24:47Speaker 1: covering somebody?
- 24:49Speaker 5: Just mainly extending the plays.
- 24:51Speaker 7: That's the you know, I'm going against some I don't
- 24:53Speaker 7: even know how many times over the through, you know,
- 24:55Speaker 7: but a lot of times and just extending the plays.
- 24:58Speaker 7: The players will last.
- 25:00Speaker 5: How long?
- 25:02Speaker 1: I think you're listed at one hundred and eighty five pounds.
- 25:04Speaker 1: At some point on Sunday you'll have to tackle two
- 25:06Speaker 1: hundred and fifty two pound Derek Henry. How do you
- 25:09Speaker 1: go about doing that?
- 25:10Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 25:10Speaker 5: I mean that's just numbers. I don't care. You know,
- 25:13Speaker 5: I'm gonna get them down.
- 25:15Speaker 1: Is it all about the fundamentals? Is it getting your
- 25:18Speaker 1: shoulder into the right spot and having the proper leverage
- 25:21Speaker 1: to get the job done.
- 25:22Speaker 5: Yeah, that is about will.
- 25:25Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean, I'll play it him multiple times too,
- 25:28Speaker 7: you know, the responsibility, that's all it come out.
- 25:30Speaker 5: We all play football.
- 25:31Speaker 1: A little smile came to your face even when I
- 25:33Speaker 1: brought it up.
- 25:34Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean because I can actually just make it Taple.
- 25:37Speaker 5: You know, that's just it is what it is football
- 25:39Speaker 5: and football.
- 25:40Speaker 1: You just got to make it Taple, definitely part of
- 25:42Speaker 1: the gig. Let me wrap it up with this question.
- 25:45Speaker 1: Most of the people in the locker room call you Drago.
- 25:49Speaker 1: Have you ever thought about legally going by that as
- 25:53Speaker 1: opposed to DJ?
- 25:54Speaker 7: Well, I mean my legal name is one Drago, right,
- 25:58Speaker 7: so I mean that is my legal dame.
- 26:00Speaker 5: But I don't go by Drago to the public because.
- 26:04Speaker 7: My dad goes by Okay, so my dad is Drego,
- 26:07Speaker 7: so like everybody will call my dad, you know, that's
- 26:10Speaker 7: my dad's named Drego. So I won't go buy a
- 26:13Speaker 7: DJ That's why, and just a whole bunch of stuff
- 26:16Speaker 7: like that. But if I have a sign, he can
- 26:20Speaker 7: go by whatever, you know, I mean.
- 26:22Speaker 1: I'll pass it nine and he'll be the next one Drego.
- 26:24Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, yeah, we'll do that all right.
- 26:27Speaker 1: Congratulations on a great season, Todate. I really appreciate your
- 26:30Speaker 1: time and I hope to see your name selected for
- 26:32Speaker 1: the Pro Bowl soon. Nah.
- 26:33Speaker 5: Yeah, appreciating me so.
- 26:35Speaker 1: The Bengals Booth Podcast is brought to you by Pai Core,
- 26:38Speaker 1: Proud to be the Bengals Official HR software provider, by

- 26:49Speaker 1: Health the best care for the best fans. Kettering Health
- 26:52Speaker 1: is the official healthcare provider of the Bengals. Finally, it's
- 26:57Speaker 1: time for this week's Know the Faux segment. Last week,
- 27:00Speaker 1: the Ravens celebrated the twenty fifth anniversary of their first
- 27:03Speaker 1: Super Bowl winning team, featuring one of the best defenses
- 27:07Speaker 1: in NFL history. Marvin Lewis was the defensive coordinator and
- 27:12Speaker 1: his linebacking corps included former UC Bearcat Brad Jackson. Brad's
- 27:18Speaker 1: remained in the Baltimore area and he joined Dave Lapham
- 27:21Speaker 1: and me on The Bengals Game Plan Show this week
- 27:23Speaker 1: to explain why the Ravens are a game under five hundred.
- 27:28Speaker 9: Lamar missed some games, but they were one to three
- 27:30Speaker 9: before you know, He's had his injuries and I mean.
- 27:33Speaker 8: It's bad all the way around.
- 27:35Speaker 9: I mean, I'm here, and you know, obviously this this
- 27:37Speaker 9: past week, after losing to the Pittsburgh on Sunday, you know,
- 27:41Speaker 9: and going under five hundred to you know, the you know,
- 27:44Speaker 9: the fish grease has been ratcheted up on everybody one
- 27:47Speaker 9: Coach Harball, you know, to be fired. And you know,
- 27:51Speaker 9: I'm sure if the outcome of Sunday's game would have
- 27:54Speaker 9: been different, in the outcome would be in Pittsburgh, it'd
- 27:57Speaker 9: be fire coach Tomlins. So it's gonna go back and
- 27:59Speaker 9: forth between fans and media and the talking kids. But
- 28:02Speaker 9: there's just a lot Lamar's not playing well. I think
- 28:05Speaker 9: he hasn't had a touchdown in his last three and
- 28:07Speaker 9: a half games, and so like in any capacity of
- 28:11Speaker 9: you know, so obviously they had one that you know
- 28:15Speaker 9: likely kind of should have had, but you know, unlikely
- 28:19Speaker 9: that that would be a call with this the referees
- 28:22Speaker 9: in this day and age. So you know, defensively, they've
- 28:24Speaker 9: had their issue special teams. You know, that was a
- 28:27Speaker 9: big component. Even in Sunday's game. You missed the pat
- 28:30Speaker 9: you miss the field goals. It's just a collective effort
- 28:34Speaker 9: for whatever reason of why the Ravens are six and seven.
- 28:36Speaker 9: When you know, I mean if you look at you
- 28:40Speaker 9: know what every publication and you know, the four Letter
- 28:44Speaker 9: Broadcasting Network and you know, Worldwide Leader of Sports and
- 28:48Speaker 9: any other network, everyone would think that the Ravens would
- 28:50Speaker 9: be one of the top.
- 28:51Speaker 8: Four teams in the AFC, and unfortunately they're on the
- 28:54Speaker 8: outside looking in.
- 28:55Speaker 9: And uh, it's just been you know, a a collaborative
- 29:01Speaker 9: effort from all three phases as to why they've been
- 29:06Speaker 9: unsuccessful and then that point and unfortunately, there's most people
- 29:10Speaker 9: who thought that this team was gonna win fourteen games
- 29:13Speaker 9: minimum this year.
- 29:13Speaker 8: When you come into the.
- 29:14Speaker 9: Season and you look at you know, who they had
- 29:16Speaker 9: on the schedule, they were already circling wins. And so
- 29:20Speaker 9: unfortunately that's not been the case. And here they are
- 29:23Speaker 9: trying to battle with what four weeks I believe it
- 29:26Speaker 9: left to go and having you know, the Bengals, you
- 29:29Speaker 9: know here on Sunday, and then you got the Patriots
- 29:31Speaker 9: and then the Packers and then the Steelers. So you know,
- 29:34Speaker 9: there's some hope, but there's also a realistic opportunity.
- 29:38Speaker 8: That you could actually go, you know, lose.
- 29:40Speaker 9: The last six, you know, losing to the Bengals on
- 29:42Speaker 9: Thanksgiving night and then losing to the Steelers on Sunday,
- 29:45Speaker 9: and you know, if they go out to Cincinnati and
- 29:48Speaker 9: and don't get it done, and then you got to
- 29:49Speaker 9: go you know, you got the Patriots and then you
- 29:51Speaker 9: finish on the road in Green Bay and you guys know, Lap,
- 29:54Speaker 9: you've played there.
- 29:55Speaker 8: You've done it, Hordy, you've done it.
- 29:57Speaker 1: You know.
- 29:57Speaker 9: I was fortunate enough that whenever I played the Packers,
- 29:59Speaker 9: it was no later than October. So I can't even
- 30:02Speaker 9: imagine him going to Lambeau and he's December twenty.
- 30:04Speaker 8: Seventh and trying to figure out what that what that
- 30:07Speaker 8: weather is going to be like, and.
- 30:09Speaker 9: Then finish up with the Steelers in Pittsburgh. So it's
- 30:12Speaker 9: a daunting task. And like they said, the fat Lady
- 30:15Speaker 9: isn't singing, but she's humming.
- 30:18Speaker 10: Yeah. You know, you look at the Baltimore Ravens got stars,
- 30:25Speaker 10: I mean, superstar players. Dereck Henry's a stud.
- 30:28Speaker 3: What a load man.
- 30:29Speaker 10: You know, he's two hundred and fifty pounds sixty three
- 30:33Speaker 10: plus probably closer to six four. I mean that looked
- 30:36Speaker 10: that's like a big linebacker lining up at the running
- 30:39Speaker 10: back position coming downhill and trying to punish you and
- 30:42Speaker 10: punish people. I do think that it's a challenge. Obviously
- 30:47Speaker 10: the game's left for the Ravens, but it's not an impossibility,
- 30:51Speaker 10: particularly if they get that running game going and take
- 30:54Speaker 10: some pressure off Lamar and let Lamar you know, play
- 30:57Speaker 10: action pass and utilize is tight end one of the
- 31:01Speaker 10: best in the business, maybe the best in the business.
- 31:04Speaker 5: I think.
- 31:05Speaker 10: I think that Baltimore is still, you know, some a
- 31:08Speaker 10: football team that people respect and are you know, know
- 31:12Speaker 10: that they have to bring it in order to win
- 31:16Speaker 10: the football game against the Baltimore Ravens. What do you think, Well, I.
- 31:21Speaker 8: Mean, you're right, you know that. But the problem is
- 31:23Speaker 8: is Baltimore fans.
- 31:24Speaker 9: And I hear it a lot, you know when I'm
- 31:25Speaker 9: out in public and started Christmas shopping and doing the events,
- 31:29Speaker 9: and you know, I mean, you look at this season
- 31:31Speaker 9: and you got five games, only five games where Derrick
- 31:34Speaker 9: Henry has had more than.
- 31:36Speaker 8: Twenty touches to than twenty carries, like so they.
- 31:39Speaker 9: I mean you're talking about games where, for example, against
- 31:42Speaker 9: the Bengals and you guys were there on Thanksgiving night,
- 31:44Speaker 9: he's averaging six yards of carry and he finishes with
- 31:47Speaker 9: ten carries and for ten for sixty with along of
- 31:50Speaker 9: twenty eight. He's it's almost like, you know, you remember
- 31:52Speaker 9: the Michael Jordans and Kobe Bryant and basketball players, and
- 31:56Speaker 9: you know, I remember my Bearcat teammates like Melo Levy
- 31:59Speaker 9: used to always argue with Hugs and Ruben Patterson and
- 32:01Speaker 9: those guys that the more shots they got up, the
- 32:04Speaker 9: more of a rhythm that they got into. We've all
- 32:06Speaker 9: been around the game of football for a long time
- 32:08Speaker 9: that it's no different than running backs. The more opportunities
- 32:11Speaker 9: that they get, the more that they get into rhythm,
- 32:14Speaker 9: the more that that engine gets going. And then, of course,
- 32:17Speaker 9: like you said, Lap, the more that it wears on
- 32:18Speaker 9: the defense when you have a two hundred and sixty
- 32:20Speaker 9: pound guide that's.
- 32:21Speaker 8: Still running a four or five, and that is a
- 32:23Speaker 8: home run.
- 32:24Speaker 9: Hitter realistically every time he gets into the secondary, because
- 32:27Speaker 9: we all know this league does not hit anymore of
- 32:30Speaker 9: their a bunch of.
- 32:30Speaker 8: Armed tackling grab on and hold on.
- 32:33Speaker 9: And hope for tacklers, and so you have to give
- 32:36Speaker 9: him the volume. And that's been a frustrating thing that
- 32:38Speaker 9: has been in the Baltimore media.
- 32:40Speaker 8: You know, whether it's social print or television. It's the
- 32:43Speaker 8: fan base. And of course you know Harves.
- 32:46Speaker 9: Is stood up there and answer the questions, and you
- 32:48Speaker 9: know that they tried to do this thing, but you
- 32:50Speaker 9: know they could kind of skate away from it.
- 32:52Speaker 8: When you were playing the.
- 32:53Speaker 9: Bears, who at that time were not hot, and you know,
- 32:56Speaker 9: the Ravens beat him, and then they had Miami and
- 32:58Speaker 9: Minnesota and Cleveland and the Jets, and so when you're
- 33:01Speaker 9: you're kind of it's almost like for yazy, you know,
- 33:04Speaker 9: for the for the young folks out there, that's the
- 33:06Speaker 9: fake gold, you know, where they got into this false
- 33:09Speaker 9: sense of.
- 33:09Speaker 8: Security where they're like, Okay, we can get.
- 33:11Speaker 9: There for fifteen and eighteen and eleven and twelve and
- 33:14Speaker 9: still win games.
- 33:16Speaker 8: And then when you're you know, you're you're running around.
- 33:18Speaker 9: And even the Buffalo lost early in the year, they
- 33:21Speaker 9: lost forty one to forty. He had eighteen carries for
- 33:24Speaker 9: one hundred and sixty nine yards and they basically put.
- 33:27Speaker 8: Him in that, you know, put a jacket on him
- 33:29Speaker 8: in the third and fourth quarters of those games.
- 33:31Speaker 9: So it's frustrating because I know, winning a Super Bowl.
- 33:35Speaker 9: Our team was built because Trent Gill for our quarterback
- 33:38Speaker 9: Tony Banks, our quarterback. They were not the guys that
- 33:40Speaker 9: were going to go out there, and they obviously didn't
- 33:42Speaker 9: have the MVP talent that Lamar Jackson has, and so
- 33:46Speaker 9: we relied on the running game. And so when you're
- 33:48Speaker 9: struggling on offense, as the Ravens have been, with pass protection,
- 33:52Speaker 9: with the offensive line, with Lamar's inaccuracy, with wire receivers
- 33:56Speaker 9: running the wrong routes, with wide receivers dropping the.
- 33:58Speaker 8: Ball, you know, then get act of what you can
- 34:00Speaker 8: do that.
- 34:01Speaker 9: You can count on to hang your hat on, and
- 34:03Speaker 9: that's running Derrick Henry and Keaton Mitchell and those type
- 34:07Speaker 9: of players in the running backs, and obviously Justice Hills
- 34:09Speaker 9: be down and then you have a li you know,
- 34:11Speaker 9: the rookie from Marshall. You know, these are all guys
- 34:14Speaker 9: that are all different backs, that are all been explosive
- 34:16Speaker 9: and can make plays. But yet for some reason, the
- 34:20Speaker 9: offensive coordinating to play calling. And I'm not in the
- 34:22Speaker 9: building right now, you know, I don't even what I
- 34:24Speaker 9: am in the building.
- 34:25Speaker 8: I tend to go to the defensive side and try
- 34:28Speaker 8: to sit and see what's going on there.
- 34:30Speaker 9: You know, But there is a question and a problem
- 34:33Speaker 9: of why you're just not saying Derrick Henry is December.
- 34:36Speaker 9: We've kind of managed your workload all week, all year
- 34:39Speaker 9: for the most part, whether intentionally or unintentionally.
- 34:43Speaker 8: So guess what you're gonna get twenty five.
- 34:45Speaker 9: To thirty carries this Sunday and we're just going to
- 34:48Speaker 9: see what happens. And you know, we did that with
- 34:50Speaker 9: Jamal Lewis, and that's you know, like you said earlier,
- 34:53Speaker 9: that that's why we were world champions. We played to
- 34:55Speaker 9: our defense, we played what was working and what the
- 34:58Speaker 9: other team allowed us to get, and then you were successful.
- 35:01Speaker 8: And that's that's the whole point of the game.
- 35:03Speaker 9: You have to find out every week, in every quarter,
- 35:05Speaker 9: in almost every series, as you guys are well aware of,
- 35:07Speaker 9: it's going to be different and you have to make
- 35:09Speaker 9: those adjustments and find out what can we take advantage
- 35:12Speaker 9: of with our weapons.
- 35:13Speaker 8: And Derek Henry is one of the biggest and best
- 35:16Speaker 8: weapons you could.
- 35:16Speaker 9: Have in the National Football League, which is why he's
- 35:19Speaker 9: over another thousand yards with four games ago.
- 35:22Speaker 1: Our thanks to Brad Jackson, and here's a quick invitation
