- 1:10Speaker 1: and unlike our previous episode, this is actually the first
- 1:15Speaker 1: episode of the series with the titular character in it. However,
- 1:21Speaker 1: this was far from his mystery debut. This series was
- 1:26Speaker 1: descended from the Molay Mystery Theater, one of the great
- 1:31Speaker 1: mystery anthology series of the World War two and the
- 1:35Speaker 1: immediate era. Afterwards, the series moved to CBS and with
- 1:40Speaker 1: the influence of Anne and Frank Commert, best known for
- 1:43Speaker 1: producing soap operas as well as the longtime success I
- 1:48Speaker 1: should say long running success melodrama detective series Mister Keene,
- 1:53Speaker 1: Tracer of Lost Persons. The series began to focus on
- 1:58Speaker 1: the character of Hearthstone the Desk Squad, eventually becoming the
- 2:02Speaker 1: sole feature of the series. So this nineteen fifty one
- 2:06Speaker 1: launch came after essentially three years of being the lead
- 2:11Speaker 1: character on the series. Anyway, The series starred Alfred Shirley,
- 2:15Speaker 1: who is probably best known for playing Doctor Watson opposite
- 2:20Speaker 1: John Stanley's homes in the first season of New Adventures
- 2:25Speaker 1: of Sherlock Holmes for Mutual After Najo Bruce left and
- 2:29Speaker 1: the series moved back to New York. Anyway, Here's the
- 2:32Speaker 1: first episode of the series from August thirtieth of nineteen
- 2:36Speaker 1: fifty one. Here's The Unheeded Murder Case.
- 2:57Speaker 2: CBS Radio Again presents but I'm a Hearthstone of the
- 3:01Speaker 2: Death Squad, implacable manhunter of the Metropolitan Police in one
- 3:06Speaker 2: of his greatest investigations entitled The Unheeded Warning Murder Case,
- 3:13Speaker 2: with Ronald Long as Elliot Lindsay and Florence Williams as
- 3:17Speaker 2: Dela Parker. Now for Inspector Heartstone.
- 3:37Speaker 3: Of the Death Squad.
- 3:39Speaker 2: In The Unheeded Warning Murder Case. The scene opens in
- 3:44Speaker 2: the front office of the Lindsay Messenger Service, whose business
- 3:47Speaker 2: is the delivery of messages and small parcel A pretty
- 3:51Speaker 2: girl is seated at the desk. She looks up surprised
- 3:54Speaker 2: as the door opens and a young man, obviously excited enters.
- 3:58Speaker 2: The girl is Dela Parker. The young man is Bill Richards,
- 4:02Speaker 2: a newspaper reporter Della's fiance, and we hear Della say
- 4:06Speaker 2: the words that lead to violence and murder.
- 4:10Speaker 4: Oh, Phil, this is a surprise.
- 4:12Speaker 5: What are you doing here, Della?
- 4:13Speaker 3: Quick?
- 4:13Speaker 5: Put on your hat.
- 4:14Speaker 3: You've got to get out of this place.
- 4:16Speaker 4: You sound as dramatic as one of your stories in
- 4:18Speaker 4: the paper field.
- 4:19Speaker 5: I've come to warn you, Della.
- 4:20Speaker 4: All right, I'm warn.
- 4:22Speaker 3: But what about hurry? Della?
- 4:23Speaker 5: I'll tell you on the way out.
- 4:24Speaker 4: Oh he's sound awfully silly, Phil, But I love you anyway.
- 4:28Speaker 5: Dalla. Please be serious. You're in real danger here.
- 4:31Speaker 4: What on earth are you talking about?
- 4:33Speaker 5: This place? The Lindsay Messenger Service isn't what you think
- 4:36Speaker 5: it is.
- 4:37Speaker 4: Are you trying to kid me?
- 4:38Speaker 3: Phil?
- 4:39Speaker 5: Certainly I'm not.
- 4:40Speaker 3: This place isn't a messenger service at all. It's the
- 4:43Speaker 3: front for one of the worst criminal operations in New York.
- 4:46Speaker 4: Don't be silly.
- 4:47Speaker 5: My city editor, Martin Bayer just gave me the lowdown
- 4:50Speaker 5: on what goes.
- 4:50Speaker 3: On in this place.
- 4:51Speaker 4: What goes on.
- 4:52Speaker 3: He's ready to blow the whole dirty business wide open,
- 4:55Speaker 3: and when he does, one of the biggest stories.
- 4:57Speaker 5: Of crime and murder the paper.
- 4:59Speaker 3: Has ever printed, splash across the front page and rock
- 5:01Speaker 3: the town.
- 5:02Speaker 4: Oh will you talk like a scene from a ten
- 5:04Speaker 4: twenty thirty mel.
- 5:05Speaker 3: A draw right.
- 5:06Speaker 5: Don't listen to me, Della. Treat me like an idiot.
- 5:08Speaker 3: But whatever you do, come with me now, quit this job,
- 5:12Speaker 3: get away from this place before something happens to you.
- 5:14Speaker 4: If you think I'm going to give up a job
- 5:16Speaker 4: paying one hundred dollars a week because of some wild
- 5:19Speaker 4: idea born in a newspaper office, well I won't do it.
- 5:23Speaker 3: Is stupid.
- 5:24Speaker 5: You want to know.
- 5:25Speaker 4: I'm going to keep this job until long after we're married.
- 5:28Speaker 3: It's no wild idea, and Martin Bayard is not the
- 5:30Speaker 3: kind of city editor who chases rainbows.
- 5:33Speaker 5: I order you, Della, to leave here.
- 5:35Speaker 4: Now you order me, dude, You can't order me to
- 5:39Speaker 4: do anything.
- 5:40Speaker 5: I didn't know I was marrying a fool. But don't
- 5:43Speaker 5: say I didn't warn you.
- 5:44Speaker 3: What a stubborn imus so you are?
- 5:46Speaker 5: Goodbye.
- 5:47Speaker 6: Probably you've been reading too many detective stories, Jess.
- 5:53Speaker 4: He didn't hear that. Anyway, nothing's happened that the kids
- 5:57Speaker 4: won't cure.
- 5:58Speaker 3: Tonight, Beautiful, where's your boys?
- 6:01Speaker 4: If you mean mister Lindsey, he's in his office, and
- 6:04Speaker 4: don't call me beautiful. Would you like how mister Lindsey
- 6:08Speaker 4: wants to see him?
- 6:09Speaker 3: You tell him nothing? Baby, I'm going in there. Let's
- 6:12Speaker 3: just do it.
- 6:12Speaker 5: Anything, but you can't see.
- 6:13Speaker 4: Mister Lindsay without being announced.
- 6:15Speaker 3: Get out of my way. I'm going in you stay
- 6:18Speaker 3: right here, kidd. Well, Lindsey, who are you?
- 6:23Speaker 7: And what's your business?
- 6:25Speaker 3: You don't know bash Cagle.
- 6:27Speaker 7: Eh, try something new, Lindsey, I repeat, I don't know you.
- 6:32Speaker 7: We're going to get equated fast.
- 6:33Speaker 5: Lindsey and the bash Kegel.
- 6:35Speaker 3: You're trying to.
- 6:36Speaker 7: Throw to the caps and I just dropped by.
- 6:38Speaker 3: They tell you when we're chap and I'll kill you.
- 6:41Speaker 7: I've got my foot on an alarm bell. I we'll
- 6:43Speaker 7: bring everybody in this office here. I'll get this bash
- 6:48Speaker 7: Cagle if that's your name, I don't know you, never
- 6:51Speaker 7: seen you.
- 6:53Speaker 3: You've got the wrong idea somewhere anymore that, lindsay, and
- 6:56Speaker 3: I'll kill you right now.
- 6:57Speaker 7: When I mentioned the alarm bell to you, I didn't
- 7:00Speaker 7: mention this gun in my hand.
- 7:02Speaker 3: Now leave, get up there. That's it, okay, I'll leave and.
- 7:10Speaker 5: On my way out.
- 7:11Speaker 7: I can't that day, man.
- 7:12Speaker 3: I don't want to.
- 7:13Speaker 7: Try to keep me out of here. No, you won't
- 7:15Speaker 7: leave by that door. You'll leave through this back door
- 7:18Speaker 7: right here. Now move. I don't know that they came
- 7:30Speaker 7: from the back hallway. I look out open the doors.
- 7:36Speaker 6: Murdered the man who's forced his Randier office.
- 7:40Speaker 4: Oh God, terrible.
- 7:42Speaker 7: I'll call the police, Stella.
- 7:53Speaker 2: So once again, the steely called heart Stone of the
- 7:56Speaker 2: death Squad and his assistant Detective Sam Cook find themselves
- 8:00Speaker 2: on the scene of a strange and puzzling murder. And
- 8:04Speaker 2: we hear Inspector Hertstone with a Della Parker and her employer,
- 8:07Speaker 2: mister Lindsey, as he says, so yes, Storry.
- 8:11Speaker 3: Mister Lindsey's that the man you had never seen.
- 8:14Speaker 8: Before forced his way into your office. Ltned to kill
- 8:18Speaker 8: your left by the back door which you had closed
- 8:21Speaker 8: upon him, and was shot down in this hallway about
- 8:25Speaker 8: ten feet from the door of this office.
- 8:27Speaker 5: I'm sure he was.
- 8:28Speaker 7: Insane, Inspector Heartstone. He forced his way into my office.
- 8:31Speaker 6: Just what happened, inspect I'm Della Park and mister Linday's
- 8:35Speaker 6: confidential secretary.
- 8:37Speaker 4: The man rushed in with a mad look in his eyes,
- 8:40Speaker 4: wouldn't let me announce him, pushed me aside, and forced
- 8:43Speaker 4: his way in mister Lindsay's office and slammed the door.
- 8:45Speaker 3: So you were not in mister Lindsay's office while this
- 8:48Speaker 3: man was talking to him.
- 8:49Speaker 7: No, Della was outside in the reception room. But you'd see,
- 8:53Speaker 7: Inspector Hearthstone. She confirms my story exactly.
- 8:57Speaker 8: So I should expect to me your secretary. Mister confirming
- 9:01Speaker 8: employer's story is part of his secretary's job. But I
- 9:06Speaker 8: wonder will she confirm whatever explanation you make of that
- 9:09Speaker 8: forty five carabg gun on your desk.
- 9:12Speaker 4: A gun?
- 9:13Speaker 6: Oh, mister Lindsay usually keeps that and he's safe.
- 9:16Speaker 4: I have no idea how it.
- 9:17Speaker 7: Got there, Inspected I used it to frighten the man away, Inspector. Remember,
- 9:21Speaker 7: he was threatening to kill me.
- 9:23Speaker 3: Why I don't know.
- 9:25Speaker 8: They could cook and hand me that gun. P is
- 9:28Speaker 8: sair Inspector h I see it hasn't been fired.
- 9:34Speaker 7: Not much evidence is there, Inspector hearstle a gun that
- 9:37Speaker 7: hasn't been filed the body of a man out there
- 9:40Speaker 7: I've never set.
- 9:41Speaker 3: Eyes on before. I wonder who he was. I can
- 9:45Speaker 3: tell you, mister Lindsay.
- 9:47Speaker 8: His name is bash Cagel, and his business is that
- 9:51Speaker 8: of a dope peddler lot and your business is that
- 9:54Speaker 8: of a messenger and parcel.
- 9:56Speaker 3: Delivery sir, How dreadful? What dreadful? Well? She may be
- 10:01Speaker 3: formulating the idea, mister Lindsay, that the passive delivery service
- 10:05Speaker 3: would be an excellent way to distribute dope.
- 10:08Speaker 5: That will dropped that for the moment, this excited.
- 10:12Speaker 7: Girl is putting ideas into your mind. She hasn't the
- 10:16Speaker 7: haziest idea of.
- 10:17Speaker 3: What this business is.
- 10:18Speaker 8: Perhaps you should find the less excitedly secretary, mister Lindsay.
- 10:22Speaker 3: Probably say, Ella, oh Deela, I was afraid.
- 10:26Speaker 4: Of you, darling, I'm so frightened.
- 10:28Speaker 3: What's this girl? Richards in the Evening Star, Inspector Heartstone, Oh,
- 10:33Speaker 3: now I recall him. Detective Cook, Hello, Phil, what brings
- 10:37Speaker 3: you here? I came to cover the story and I
- 10:39Speaker 3: got Della out of here, Inspector Heartstone.
- 10:41Speaker 4: Tilla and I are to be married in Well. I
- 10:44Speaker 4: should have listened to you this morning.
- 10:46Speaker 3: This morning, were you here before this murder occurred?
- 10:50Speaker 5: Yes, about an hour before, Inspector hot Stone.
- 10:53Speaker 3: Looks like this guy gets an early inspector covers a
- 10:55Speaker 3: murder story before the murder comes off.
- 10:58Speaker 5: FA's work.
- 10:59Speaker 3: Well, that so I won't see Why were you here
- 11:02Speaker 3: this morning, Phil?
- 11:04Speaker 4: He came to warn me, Inspector Hospital.
- 11:06Speaker 3: That's certain, Inspector I had a tip from my city editor,
- 11:09Speaker 3: Martin Bayard, that he was ready to blow this Lindsay
- 11:12Speaker 3: Messenger service outfit to the sky. Said he just about
- 11:15Speaker 3: had the goods that it was the cover for a
- 11:17Speaker 3: big crime ring. What kind of ring?
- 11:20Speaker 5: Beer, Phil Well Bayard didn't tell me.
- 11:22Speaker 3: He's a pretty secretive sort of a guy until he
- 11:24Speaker 3: gets a story all lined up and tied together. But
- 11:26Speaker 3: believe me, he's got one, or he wouldn't be saying anything.
- 11:30Speaker 6: Bill came here terribly upset Inspector Horstnet to have me
- 11:33Speaker 6: leave my job, and I was silly enough to laugh
- 11:36Speaker 6: at him.
- 11:36Speaker 4: I called it melodrama.
- 11:38Speaker 3: Bill, get your city edit a moutain. Bayard to the phone,
- 11:41Speaker 3: for me. Okay, Inspector park Row eight nine nine seven,
- 11:45Speaker 3: oh and be quick, Hello st Our office, this is
- 11:48Speaker 3: Phil Richards. Put me on a Bayard at the city desk.
- 11:52Speaker 5: What.
- 11:53Speaker 3: Oh, that's impossible. When wait, let me tell this to
- 11:58Speaker 3: Inspector Heartstone. Listen, Martin Bayard was shot down by a
- 12:01Speaker 3: machine gun fire. What they got him just as he
- 12:04Speaker 3: was stepping into a lunch room behind the newspaper office
- 12:06Speaker 3: less than five minutes agoll.
- 12:08Speaker 8: So, Bayard's story on the Lindsay Messenger service was stopped
- 12:12Speaker 8: by the hand of death.
- 12:14Speaker 3: And I think I've got the answer, Inspector Hartston. This
- 12:18Speaker 3: man Lindsay here undoubtedly overheard me warning Della this morning
- 12:22Speaker 3: and tipped his mob to bump off Bayard. It could
- 12:24Speaker 3: be filled now, Lindsey.
- 12:28Speaker 7: I didn't overhear anything, Inspector Hearthstone. I didn't even know
- 12:32Speaker 7: this reporter was in here talking to Della.
- 12:34Speaker 3: It's ridiculous.
- 12:36Speaker 7: And why in the name of heavens should I want
- 12:38Speaker 7: the city editor of the Evening Star murdered.
- 12:41Speaker 3: As the evidence in this case unfold itself, the answer
- 12:44Speaker 3: to that, Christian may be revealed Lindsay In the meanwhile,
- 12:49Speaker 3: let's go back to the murdered dope headler in the
- 12:51Speaker 3: hall besh kegel his body at least is on these premises.
- 12:56Speaker 7: May I point out you, Inspector Hearthstone, that there is
- 12:58Speaker 7: only a single say, footprints on the floor leading from
- 13:02Speaker 7: this office to his body, his footsteps and no others.
- 13:05Speaker 8: No, you needn't, Lindsey. I noted that interest in fact myself.
- 13:11Speaker 8: That's why I didn't approach the body.
- 13:13Speaker 3: Now.
- 13:13Speaker 7: That makes it pretty clear, doesn't it that I didn't
- 13:16Speaker 7: follow him down the hallway and.
- 13:17Speaker 3: Kill him unless there's some very clever trick that I
- 13:20Speaker 3: haven't caught on to as yet.
- 13:22Speaker 7: Well, nobody ever goes down that hall, that is, except
- 13:25Speaker 7: very seldom. The floor was waxed this morning. The only
- 13:28Speaker 7: person walking over it was the murdered man, so it seems.
- 13:33Speaker 3: Now, tell me, mister Lindsey, did you use the phone
- 13:37Speaker 3: after the murder.
- 13:38Speaker 7: Only to call the police, Inspector Helstone.
- 13:42Speaker 3: Isn't that true, Della?
- 13:43Speaker 5: I don't know, mister Lindsey, that is that is what della.
- 13:47Speaker 6: Well, I'm sure, Inspector Harstone, mister Lindsay did not use
- 13:50Speaker 6: the phone.
- 13:51Speaker 3: Victor Cook, Sam, what did you find out from the
- 13:54Speaker 3: elevator man? He says he brought two tough looking characters
- 13:58Speaker 3: up here, Inspector, but they never came down with them.
- 14:00Speaker 3: This is only the third floor. I'd be essentially get
- 14:02Speaker 3: away down the stairs they were, and same the men
- 14:07Speaker 3: looking out of the back office near best Keegele's body.
- 14:11Speaker 3: I think he wants to talk to me, you know, Okay,
- 14:15Speaker 3: I'll get him. Come on, mister inspector wants you.
- 14:19Speaker 5: He certainly, Officer, I've got a note with the inspector.
- 14:22Speaker 7: You won't get anything out of him, Inspector Hoston, He's
- 14:25Speaker 7: only the man who handles the partles.
- 14:27Speaker 3: Henry Jones, Thank you, Lindsay, but I find out for myself. Hey, I,
- 14:31Speaker 3: Inspector Hastston, your name is Henry Jones. Wats your story?
- 14:36Speaker 3: Your story to all, Inspector Howstone. I just wanted to
- 14:39Speaker 3: give you this note that I've found. Thanks mister Jones.
- 14:43Speaker 3: Look at it.
- 14:43Speaker 5: What's in that note?
- 14:44Speaker 3: Jones? Nothing of immediate interest to you in there? I
- 14:50Speaker 3: think I take the point. Mister Jones will arrange it
- 14:53Speaker 3: just as this note suggests. Read this note think it's
- 15:00Speaker 3: a trek, Inspector Ratstan. I'm not so sure, Sam.
- 15:04Speaker 5: Come on, let's go back.
- 15:05Speaker 3: To headquarters like the headquarters, Inspector, with everything hanging in
- 15:08Speaker 3: the air, I don't catch you on. Come on, Sam oh,
- 15:12Speaker 3: thank you mister Lindsay for your help. I shall see
- 15:15Speaker 3: you later after your establishment has been gone over with
- 15:19Speaker 3: a fine tooth. Come searched. What and if you're interested
- 15:23Speaker 3: in what I'm looking for, it's dope, narcotics, drugs. Goodbye?
- 15:29Speaker 3: What about me and Della, Inspector Hartstone, who write your
- 15:32Speaker 3: story for the newspaper Phil about this murder and about
- 15:35Speaker 3: the killing of your city at at A martin Bayard.
- 15:39Speaker 3: Then look after your fiance. I think she may be
- 15:42Speaker 3: ready now to stop laughing at your warnings. It's note
- 15:47Speaker 3: from that guy Henry Johns. Looks tricky to me, Inspector
- 15:50Speaker 3: Ratstan says, can I see you at police headquarters? Have
- 15:54Speaker 3: the evidence you want? Afraid to talk here? I'm the
- 15:57Speaker 3: party who has given Bayard City editor of the Evening,
- 16:00Speaker 3: start aloud that Henry Jones. The note can be a trick, Sam,
- 16:06Speaker 3: or it can be legitimate. When we talk to Henry Jones,
- 16:09Speaker 3: we'll soon find out. My haunches will get Matham.
- 16:20Speaker 2: And Detective Sam Cook was right. For while he and
- 16:23Speaker 2: Inspector Hartstone are on their way back to headquarters. This
- 16:26Speaker 2: scene takes place with Henry Jones in his employer's office.
- 16:30Speaker 2: We hear mister Lindsay, the employer saying.
- 16:33Speaker 7: You'll tell me what that note you wrote to Hearthstone was,
- 16:37Speaker 7: Jones or you're out.
- 16:38Speaker 3: Of a job. It's got nothing to do with you,
- 16:40Speaker 3: mister Lindsey.
- 16:41Speaker 5: Believe me, were you.
- 16:42Speaker 7: By any chance making a date to talk to Hearthstone
- 16:45Speaker 7: outside of this office where you could talk and talk
- 16:48Speaker 7: and talk, feed him a lot of eyewash about what
- 16:51Speaker 7: you think goes on here.
- 16:53Speaker 3: No, I'm not meeting that cop anywhere.
- 16:55Speaker 5: Never had such an idea.
- 16:58Speaker 7: That's the phone ringing in your office. Johe no answers,
- 17:01Speaker 7: and then come back here.
- 17:03Speaker 3: All right?
- 17:04Speaker 5: Have you right back?
- 17:05Speaker 3: Missilogy?
- 17:10Speaker 5: Hello?
- 17:11Speaker 3: Hello, Hey, what is this?
- 17:17Speaker 5: What are you doing?
- 17:19Speaker 3: No? Who know?
- 17:21Speaker 5: Don't hear me?
- 17:41Speaker 2: Another mystery high spot on your CBS radio roster. Formerly
- 17:44Speaker 2: at this time is the line Up. The Lineup, taking
- 17:47Speaker 2: you behind the scenes into police cases and authentic police methods,
- 17:51Speaker 2: brings you stories of troubled human beings on both sides
- 17:54Speaker 2: of the law, exciting man hunts colored only by reality itself.
- 17:59Speaker 2: From now on, the line Up will be heard Wednesday
- 18:02Speaker 2: evening over most of these same CBS radio stations. And
- 18:15Speaker 2: now back to Harthstone of the Death Squad and the
- 18:19Speaker 2: unheeded warning murder Kate. When sudden murder strikes in the
- 18:24Speaker 2: offices of the Elliott Lindsay Messenger Service, Inspector Harthstone recognizes
- 18:29Speaker 2: the victim as Bash Cagele, a notorious dope peddler, and
- 18:33Speaker 2: he looks with suspicion upon Elliot Lindsay, especially when Phil Richards,
- 18:37Speaker 2: a newspaper reporter in love with Lindsay's beautiful secretary Della Parker,
- 18:42Speaker 2: tells Inspector Harthstone that his city editor, Martin Bayard, has
- 18:47Speaker 2: information that the Lindsay Messenger Service is being used to
- 18:50Speaker 2: distribute dope. Then Martin Bayard is murdered and a note
- 18:54Speaker 2: is delivered to Harthstone from Henry Jones, a clerk in
- 18:58Speaker 2: Elliott Lindsay's office, saying he has the evidence that will
- 19:01Speaker 2: point out the murderer. Now it is a short time
- 19:05Speaker 2: later the scene is police headquarters and we hear Inspector
- 19:09Speaker 2: Hartstone saying to Detective Sam Cook, oh.
- 19:12Speaker 3: Henry Jones should be here any minute now, Sam, I
- 19:15Speaker 3: still say the guys are Fannie, Inspector Hartstone speaking Inspector Hearthstone.
- 19:21Speaker 7: This is Elliott Lindsay. Another murder has been committed here
- 19:25Speaker 7: in my office. The man Henry Jones who gave you
- 19:28Speaker 7: that note has been shot Stone dead. A couple of
- 19:32Speaker 7: policemen are here already, but I thought i'd better phone
- 19:35Speaker 7: you myself.
- 19:36Speaker 3: Put one of those policemen on the line.
- 19:37Speaker 7: Lindsay, Officer, Inspector Heartstone, on's to speak to you.
- 19:42Speaker 3: That is after Kennythspecker.
- 19:44Speaker 8: Take Elliot Lindsay, a head of Lindsay messenger, servicing custody officer.
- 19:49Speaker 8: Bring him in handcuffed, have the officers surrounded so nobody
- 19:52Speaker 8: can get in or out.
- 19:54Speaker 3: And act at once. Goodbye. That's the third guy to go.
- 19:57Speaker 3: Inspector Listen. If we are not here for Sam, it
- 20:00Speaker 3: won't be the last. Well Sam. See if you can
- 20:03Speaker 3: reach Richards it is a newspaper. Tell him I want
- 20:06Speaker 3: to see him. Tell him to hurry over here.
- 20:09Speaker 5: That's a coincidence. I had a flash. You don't want me,
- 20:11Speaker 5: Inspector Hastone, so here I.
- 20:12Speaker 8: Am, Oh splendid Phil. I see you brought Dilla with you.
- 20:17Speaker 6: With dreadful Inspector Phil, and I hadn't even left the
- 20:19Speaker 6: Lindsay offices when that poor harmless old man Henry Jones
- 20:23Speaker 6: was q.
- 20:24Speaker 3: He was in Lindsay's office, Inspector murdered in Lindsay's office.
- 20:28Speaker 6: No, not que there, But I heard them calling to
- 20:31Speaker 6: Respector Howstone in mister Lindsey's office, and then Henry Jones
- 20:34Speaker 6: went to answer his phone and he was shot in
- 20:37Speaker 6: his own little cubbyho.
- 20:38Speaker 5: It's a since Lindsay, did it, Inspector.
- 20:41Speaker 3: Now, Della, tell Inspector Horstone what you told me about
- 20:44Speaker 3: Lindsay's phone call before my city editor was killed.
- 20:48Speaker 5: Well, don't hold back. There's nothing to be afraid of, Della.
- 20:51Speaker 6: Well, I heard mister Lindsey on the phone calling somebody
- 20:54Speaker 6: this morning after the first murder, and he said still
- 20:58Speaker 6: city Editor Martin Bayer usually ran out for a sandwich
- 21:02Speaker 6: at a lunch counter behind the newspaper office at about
- 21:05Speaker 6: two o'clock every day.
- 21:07Speaker 5: So there you are, Inspector. There's your case.
- 21:10Speaker 8: It seems that way, Phil, But every indication is that
- 21:13Speaker 8: Lindsay was not working alone. The dope bracket embraces many men,
- 21:18Speaker 8: many killers.
- 21:20Speaker 3: I want them all. That's what my murdered city editor
- 21:23Speaker 3: told me, Inspector and by the way, I went through
- 21:26Speaker 3: his private file and found one very peculiar thing.
- 21:29Speaker 5: Bill.
- 21:30Speaker 6: Isn't enough that three people have been killed already for
- 21:33Speaker 6: talking without your taking a chance.
- 21:35Speaker 4: So please get out of this case. I'm frightened, terribly
- 21:38Speaker 4: frightened for you.
- 21:39Speaker 5: Well, I'm a newspaper reporter, Della.
- 21:42Speaker 3: I write what I.
- 21:43Speaker 5: See, and I tell the police what I know.
- 21:44Speaker 4: Please, Phill, I'm so frightened.
- 21:46Speaker 6: You must take care of me. But with all those
- 21:49Speaker 6: people being killed from that horrible Lindsay messenger service all,
- 21:52Speaker 6: if I'm afraid to go home, I know somebody who
- 21:55Speaker 6: killed me. I've sit up all night.
- 21:57Speaker 3: I won't go to bed easy, sweetheart.
- 22:00Speaker 5: I've thought of that myself. So I've told my mother
- 22:02Speaker 5: you'll stay with her until this is over.
- 22:04Speaker 6: Oh, Phil, that's just what I hope you'd say your mother,
- 22:07Speaker 6: did dine.
- 22:08Speaker 3: Let me ask you, Phil, did you bring those notes
- 22:11Speaker 3: you took from your murdered city and it is a
- 22:13Speaker 3: private fire with you? No, But I can get them,
- 22:15Speaker 3: Inspector Heartstone. After I've taken Della to my mother's, I'll
- 22:19Speaker 3: go back to the newspaper and pick them up.
- 22:21Speaker 5: I'll bring them to you then? Is that all right?
- 22:23Speaker 6: So wouldn't it be quicker if we passed by the
- 22:25Speaker 6: newspaper office on our way to your mother?
- 22:27Speaker 4: If we get those papers then and so't you've left me?
- 22:30Speaker 6: It's mother and take a taxi and be back here
- 22:32Speaker 6: in a few minutes.
- 22:33Speaker 5: That's an idea, Della.
- 22:35Speaker 3: I'll be back inspect her heartstone that way before ten.
- 22:37Speaker 8: Excellent, Phil, You and Della had better run along. Now
- 22:41Speaker 8: go through the door of the lift.
- 22:43Speaker 5: Come on, Della, see about ten, inspector Heartstone.
- 22:45Speaker 3: Bye bye, Yes, come in.
- 22:50Speaker 8: I've got that man Lindsey outside inspect the heartstone.
- 22:53Speaker 5: You want him up there now? Yes?
- 22:55Speaker 3: Can you bring him in? I got with you, Kenny,
- 22:57Speaker 3: and get him myself? No? No, Sam?
- 22:59Speaker 5: Can he get him?
- 23:00Speaker 8: And you hurry down and put a good man, a
- 23:02Speaker 8: top man on the job of tailing Phil and Dela.
- 23:06Speaker 8: Don't stand staring at me, Sam, get on with it.
- 23:08Speaker 3: I'm sorry, Inspector. I put one of the boys and
- 23:10Speaker 3: a trail right away. The Wretchard and Della Cracker. Hi, Sam, Yes, Lindsay, inspact.
- 23:18Speaker 7: That it's better, Heartstone. If you're arresting me for murder,
- 23:22Speaker 7: you're on the wrong street.
- 23:23Speaker 3: Whyle, Lindsay, Because I didn't kill anybody, it's more likely
- 23:28Speaker 3: I myself will be killed again. Whyle, Lindsay, because it's
- 23:32Speaker 3: as plain as the nose on your face, that young
- 23:34Speaker 3: newspaper reporter Phil Richards and his girlfriend Della Parker committing
- 23:39Speaker 3: these murders. Oh really, thanks for the information, But tell
- 23:43Speaker 3: me what evidence of you to support that story, Lindsey.
- 23:46Speaker 7: The evidence of what I suppose is millions of dollars
- 23:50Speaker 7: in dope that I found concealed in our uptown warehouse.
- 23:54Speaker 7: The only people who could have concealed it there and
- 23:57Speaker 7: my secretary, Della Parker and her fiance newspaper reporter.
- 24:01Speaker 5: They're the only one.
- 24:02Speaker 8: It's a beautiful story of true, Lindsay, especially from a
- 24:07Speaker 8: man who's been on the scene in suspicious circumstances of
- 24:11Speaker 8: two murders.
- 24:12Speaker 7: I don't care where I was. I'm telling you the truth,
- 24:16Speaker 7: Inspector Heartstow.
- 24:17Speaker 3: Eh, all right, Lindsay, I'm going to do a funny thing.
- 24:23Speaker 3: Take a cook, then take the handcuffs off, Lindsay. Release him, No, child,
- 24:30Speaker 3: what release him? That's what I said, Sam. Release him.
- 24:35Speaker 3: You may go, Lindsay, but remember you may be watched.
- 24:39Speaker 5: You're letting me go.
- 24:40Speaker 3: I have my reasons. Show mister Lindsey out Sam.
- 24:52Speaker 2: And in the Meanwhile, Della Parker and Phil Richards are
- 24:55Speaker 2: walking along the dark street where Phil's mother lives, and
- 24:58Speaker 2: Phil is saying.
- 25:00Speaker 3: I think you were imagining things, sweetheart. Nobody was following us.
- 25:04Speaker 5: But just to settle you down, I got the idea
- 25:06Speaker 5: of slipping through one door of that restaurant and out
- 25:08Speaker 5: the other.
- 25:09Speaker 6: Still, I'm worried about you. What was that strange thing
- 25:13Speaker 6: you said was in those notes of your editor Martin Bayard.
- 25:16Speaker 6: I'm about to be your wife, Darling. We shouldn't have secrets, please, dear.
- 25:21Speaker 3: I think they had went nuts before he was killed.
- 25:24Speaker 3: His notes say a woman was in the dope bracket
- 25:26Speaker 3: with Lindsay.
- 25:27Speaker 4: And who was the woman? Phildarice? Oh, come kiss me
- 25:31Speaker 4: first and then tell me.
- 25:33Speaker 5: I tell you theyard big City editor and not was nuts?
- 25:37Speaker 5: It was you, Della.
- 25:39Speaker 6: You give me those papers that they had give him to.
- 25:41Speaker 5: Me, Tellah, God forgive me. It was you. I'll give
- 25:46Speaker 5: you nothing, God help me. You are murderess, a murderess and.
- 25:50Speaker 6: A queen of dope to now give me those papers, not.
- 25:56Speaker 7: Kill me and good for those papers.
- 26:03Speaker 6: Now into this tour with them and the gun.
- 26:09Speaker 5: Manest what's happened?
- 26:13Speaker 6: I feel safety kill for the phrase take me to
- 26:17Speaker 6: a phone, Officer, I'm a call Inspector Hudson. Yes, he's
- 26:21Speaker 6: working on the case.
- 26:22Speaker 4: That's led to this murder.
- 26:23Speaker 3: Well, you can use this police phone right here, I'll
- 26:26Speaker 3: get him. Hello, Officer Blake reporting a murder.
- 26:30Speaker 5: Give me, inspect A Hoststone.
- 26:33Speaker 6: Inspector Huston, this is Della Parker. That's terriful. Man Lindsay
- 26:38Speaker 6: is just murdered Phil Richards.
- 26:49Speaker 2: And a few minutes later we find an hysterical girl,
- 26:52Speaker 2: Della Parker, confronting Inspector Heartstone.
- 26:55Speaker 6: And I keep on saying, Inspector Horstone, you're responsible for
- 26:58Speaker 6: Phil's murder. You knew it, yes, Pkang of dope peddlers
- 27:01Speaker 6: with acron and you'll fail to protective.
- 27:03Speaker 8: I'll never live long enough to forgive myself something. Recriminations
- 27:08Speaker 8: won't get us anywhere.
- 27:11Speaker 3: All we can do is help each other.
- 27:13Speaker 8: And when I bring Phil's killer to justice, I hope
- 27:17Speaker 8: you'll find it in your heart.
- 27:20Speaker 3: Steady, my dear.
- 27:22Speaker 8: The first thing is did you actually see your employer
- 27:27Speaker 8: Lindsay shoot down Phil Dark But.
- 27:29Speaker 4: I'm sure it was, mister Lindley.
- 27:32Speaker 6: I'll swear it on the witness stand, and I'll swear
- 27:35Speaker 6: too that you were the cause.
- 27:37Speaker 3: Please, my dear child, forget your feelings toward me for
- 27:40Speaker 3: a minute. I only ask you to help me do
- 27:43Speaker 3: that first. Then hate me all you like. I'll understand
- 27:47Speaker 3: and forgive.
- 27:48Speaker 6: How can I help you inspect.
- 27:50Speaker 3: Your hostile Detective Cook? Bring Lindsay in. Come on, Lindsey,
- 27:56Speaker 3: not bry any tracks.
- 27:58Speaker 7: I wasn't near that report to Phil Richards when he
- 28:01Speaker 7: was killed. Detective Cook is mad.
- 28:03Speaker 8: Here are some reports from monarcotics squad. Lindsay, read these letters.
- 28:08Speaker 8: There are tips written into narcotics putting pree known dope
- 28:12Speaker 8: czars on the spot, and you are one of them.
- 28:16Speaker 3: I don't know anything about them.
- 28:17Speaker 7: There they're typewriton.
- 28:18Speaker 8: They were written on the typewriter in your office. And
- 28:22Speaker 8: here is a compidential report in arcotics from the murdered
- 28:25Speaker 8: city editor Mardin Bayard. The man Fiel Richard's workform.
- 28:29Speaker 3: What does it say? It tells a woman is the
- 28:31Speaker 3: head of your dope ring. And don't deny you were
- 28:35Speaker 3: operating one. Lindsay is that one.
- 28:37Speaker 6: With mister Lindsay's wife in Spectaharstle.
- 28:39Speaker 3: That's possible.
- 28:40Speaker 5: There's a lie, Inspectahastle.
- 28:42Speaker 7: My wife had nothing to do with dope.
- 28:44Speaker 3: Watch what you're saying, Lindsay, your wife may be the woman.
- 28:48Speaker 7: It's not my wife.
- 28:49Speaker 5: She's not the killer.
- 28:51Speaker 7: This girl, Della Parker, was the brains. She worked the
- 28:55Speaker 7: whole thing. She used my messenger service to pass dope.
- 28:59Speaker 6: What do you I'm saying, mister Lindsey's inspect her hearts don't.
- 29:02Speaker 4: Isn't it enough that Phil Richard's a fine clean boy?
- 29:05Speaker 4: You love me?
- 29:09Speaker 3: Why should you be murdered because Phil found out who
- 29:12Speaker 3: the leader of the dope ring was, who the wholesale
- 29:15Speaker 3: murderer was.
- 29:16Speaker 6: I take Phil to stay out of it.
- 29:18Speaker 8: And he undoubtedly knew who the woman was who operated
- 29:21Speaker 8: the dope ring.
- 29:23Speaker 3: She directed the murder to gain complete control for herself.
- 29:28Speaker 5: Why that your wh shot?
- 29:30Speaker 3: Get her Sam easy now, Della them Now tell us
- 29:35Speaker 3: just where you found the papers and the murder gun
- 29:38Speaker 3: that killed Phil. Sure, I got him out of the
- 29:41Speaker 3: sewer trays, no where he was shot a natural place
- 29:44Speaker 3: for a woman to throw them. And you, Della Parker,
- 29:48Speaker 3: were the only woman on the scene of Phil's murders.
- 29:51Speaker 3: That's right.
- 29:51Speaker 6: Accuse me for your own mistakes in sect of hostel.
- 29:55Speaker 3: I hope you'll forgive me for this, Della.
- 29:57Speaker 6: I'll not forgive you for anything.
- 29:58Speaker 3: Not even for the resting you for murder Simon hankerf
- 30:06Speaker 3: Your mistake, Della, was him being a little.
- 30:08Speaker 8: Too clever, too cooperative.
- 30:11Speaker 3: Too sweet with the unfortunate boy you murdered, probably the
- 30:15Speaker 3: only person who ever loved you.
- 30:17Speaker 4: You can't prove that I murdered him herself.
- 30:20Speaker 8: You'll find I can prove everything, Della, when I present
- 30:23Speaker 8: the evidence I have at your trial.
- 30:25Speaker 3: And you remember this when the dark and eternal door
- 30:29Speaker 3: of the execution chamber closes on you. No, no, that's all.
- 30:34Speaker 8: Sam charge her with murder and turned Lindsey over to
- 30:39Speaker 8: a narcotics division as a dope handler.
- 30:41Speaker 3: Okay, Inspector Heart's down.
- 30:44Speaker 8: My only regret is that the man we put the
- 30:47Speaker 8: trail this woman, then Phil Richards, on his murder journey,
- 30:51Speaker 8: lost them. I was trying to protect Phil from this
- 30:55Speaker 8: very thing, and.
- 31:16Speaker 2: Thus Heartstone of the death Squad writes solved in the
- 31:21Speaker 2: files of the Unheeded Warning murder case, the part of Inspector.
- 31:26Speaker 2: Host was played by Alfred Shirley and was written by

- 31:53Speaker 2: It's Joan Caulfield and Jeffrey Lynn in accent on You

- 32:01Speaker 2: this modern comedy about modern young folks in hilarious human
- 32:05Speaker 2: adventures when you hear Broadway Playhouse, which follows immediately over

- 33:14Speaker 3: to the great detectives of Old time radio.
- 33:23Speaker 1: Welcome back. I did mention Melo trauma, didn't I yeah.
- 33:27Speaker 1: This has all the hallmarks of the hummerd program, with
- 33:32Speaker 1: reputations of characters, full names and unnatural name ways, just
- 33:38Speaker 1: in case the audience forgot. Still an interesting case with
- 33:42Speaker 1: a good twist, even if we knew the solution before
- 33:46Speaker 1: Hearthstone revealed it. Anyhow, the death of the reporter was
- 33:50Speaker 1: essentially all his fault. At any rate, though, that will
- 33:53Speaker 1: do it for today. Remember we have two more weeks
- 33:56Speaker 1: of Hearthstone of the Desk Squad, and then we'll bring
- 33:58Speaker 1: you the crime files of Lament in the oh. And
- 34:01Speaker 1: I did recognize the voice of Gerald Moore, I should add,
- 34:05Speaker 1: and this is an example of just the wide variety
- 34:08Speaker 1: of shows and genres that Moore would appear in. But
- 34:11Speaker 1: at any rate, that really will do it now. Tomorrow
- 34:15Speaker 1: Gerald Moore does star as Philip Marlowe, and next Tuesday
- 34:19Speaker 1: join us back here for Hertstone of the Desk Squad.
- 34:21Speaker 1: In the meantime from Boise, Idaho, this is your host,
- 34:24Speaker 1: Adam Grahamson and off
