- 0:05Speaker 1: John Snyder's gonna win. Okay, let's just I know, I
- 0:08Speaker 1: know you like to forget about the team up north, Ken,
- 0:10Speaker 1: but John Schneider is gonna win. Okay, He's gonna win
- 0:12Speaker 1: this award just because he's there in the A. L.
- 0:14Speaker 1: E's and everyone's gonna look at him and say, oh,
- 0:16Speaker 1: the Yankees and Red Sox, but the Blue Jays. But hey,
- 0:20Speaker 1: that's fine. I get it. You forget about him sometimes.
- 0:23Speaker 2: I got you. I got whatever he's saying about it.
- 0:30Speaker 1: That's fine.
- 0:31Speaker 3: What is that pen?
- 0:32Speaker 2: Drop?
- 0:33Speaker 1: Pen? Is that like that? Like a small pan?
- 0:37Speaker 2: A lot before you even talk. I brought this up
- 0:40Speaker 2: to you yesterday. You didn't even remember it. I had
- 0:42Speaker 2: mentioned at the time Stephen Vogue could be Manager of
- 0:44Speaker 2: the Year because the Guardians were on this incredible run
- 0:48Speaker 2: and you had to run your mouth. And that's what
- 0:50Speaker 2: happens Mann.
- 0:51Speaker 1: You know, you know, you know what you know. What
- 0:53Speaker 1: I didn't know at the time is that you were
- 0:56Speaker 1: like Jerry Reinsoref and Tony LaRussa, trying to get certain
- 0:58Speaker 1: people into the Hall of Fame. You were on this
- 1:00Speaker 1: committee that voted for al Manager of the Year. You
- 1:02Speaker 1: didn't give me all the information. Ken I didn't know
- 1:05Speaker 1: behind this you were preaching out all.
- 1:08Speaker 2: These people young. That's today. That's my only vote this year.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Null and void, Ken, null and void.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Okay, okay, you're in the middle of this. You can
- 1:22Speaker 2: go to the bbw A website and see who voted
- 1:25Speaker 2: for each award. You will not see Ken Rosenthal's name
- 1:28Speaker 2: on ale mander aj. Now you got to click on something,
- 1:32Speaker 2: read something to figure this out.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Here you go, Ken, ready, I'm sorry, Ken, I'm happy
- 1:39Speaker 1: for Steven. Vote again. You'll think that Ken had some
- 1:43Speaker 1: behind the scenes scenes, back back dealing that I don't
- 1:46Speaker 1: know about. So because he was way too confident about
- 1:49Speaker 1: this one, which is which is what vot vote?
- 1:52Speaker 2: Yes, I understand over the years how guys think and
- 1:55Speaker 2: women think when they're voting. Yeah.
- 1:58Speaker 1: True, congratulations even vote an Pat Murphy obviously, all.
- 2:02Speaker 4: Right, age, I have to side with Ken on this,
- 2:04Speaker 4: having been towards vote a few times as well. It's
- 2:06Speaker 4: a lot less conspiratorial than some people think out there.
- 2:09Speaker 4: That's not quite what people seem to think. But with that, Ken, obviously,
- 2:14Speaker 4: first of all, thank you so much for joining us
- 2:15Speaker 4: here on the inside Scoop. You've written a lot recently.
- 2:17Speaker 4: I want to jump in with an article you wrote
- 2:19Speaker 4: with Evan Drelich yesterday about Major League Baseball and representatives
- 2:23Speaker 4: from the Major League Baseball Players Association met for a
- 2:26Speaker 4: preliminary meeting on labor. With the expiration of the CBA
- 2:30Speaker 4: just a little more than a year away. This is
- 2:31Speaker 4: obviously a very very big topic in the game, executives, agents,
- 2:35Speaker 4: everyone's talking about it. What can you tell us about
- 2:37Speaker 4: this meeting and what came out.
- 2:38Speaker 2: Of it, Kyle, I don't know that I can tell
- 2:41Speaker 2: you a whole lot about what happened at the meeting. Basically,
- 2:43Speaker 2: the story is that a meeting took place, and we
- 2:46Speaker 2: determine that because of the nature of these negotiations in
- 2:52Speaker 2: the past, the acrimony that has existed over the years,
- 2:55Speaker 2: we determined at the Athletic that that alone was worth
- 2:58Speaker 2: a story. That they've met and that whatever happened happened.
- 3:01Speaker 2: But at least there is some conversation. Now. I was
- 3:04Speaker 2: told this morning that there's more conversation Nick goes on
- 3:07Speaker 2: than we think, maybe, and that's fine. But this was
- 3:11Speaker 2: a formal meeting, and again I don't expect that anything
- 3:15Speaker 2: substantive happened at it. But the mere fact that they're talking.
- 3:19Speaker 2: We determined that was a news story and that's why
- 3:21Speaker 2: we wrote it. So is it a good sign or
- 3:24Speaker 2: a bad sign? I don't know that it changes Kyle
- 3:28Speaker 2: the tenor at all. This is gonna be what it is.
- 3:31Speaker 2: We all know what's coming. A lockout is coming, a
- 3:34Speaker 2: dispute is coming. But it would be actually, it would
- 3:38Speaker 2: behoove both sides to meet and meet often now and
- 3:41Speaker 2: try to get this thing done, maybe before even the
- 3:44Speaker 2: lockout date of December one, twenty twenty six. That's the
- 3:48Speaker 2: expiration of the CBA long time ago, back in two
- 3:52Speaker 2: thousand and six. I remember during the World Series the
- 3:56Speaker 2: agreement was expiring December, and they reached agreement during the
- 3:59Speaker 2: World Series. I don't expect that to happen this time,
- 4:02Speaker 2: but it's not impossible. It's happened before.
- 4:06Speaker 1: Ken. Come on, Ken, you know they're gonna drag this out.
- 4:08Speaker 1: They're not gonna get it done, gonna they're gonna drag
- 4:11Speaker 1: it out because guess what they get paid for dragging
- 4:13Speaker 1: it out. Why haven't they been meeting the whole time?
- 4:15Speaker 1: I don't understand. I just don't understand why we just
- 4:17Speaker 1: can't meet the whole time. And go from there. But
- 4:20Speaker 1: what I really don't understand is why were you not
- 4:21Speaker 1: in on this meeting?
- 4:22Speaker 3: Ken?
- 4:23Speaker 1: You could have just squeezed through the keyhole and sat
- 4:25Speaker 1: in there and listen and then given us the inside
- 4:27Speaker 1: scoop a j That's.
- 4:30Speaker 2: A great point, and I wish I had been at
- 4:32Speaker 2: this meeting and many others over the years. There was
- 4:35Speaker 2: one time in my career where the Oriols were being
- 4:38Speaker 2: sold in a bankruptcy auction. This was in nineteen ninety
- 4:41Speaker 2: three and it was taking place in a courthouse in Manhattan,
- 4:45Speaker 2: and I did sneak into a meeting because there were
- 4:47Speaker 2: all these people in suits and I was actually in
- 4:48Speaker 2: a suit too, and no one knew who which group.
- 4:52Speaker 2: So I snuck into this meeting and I was successful
- 4:54Speaker 2: and I found out some stuff. But in the past
- 4:57Speaker 2: thirty two years, I really haven't done that again. Hasn't
- 5:00Speaker 2: worked out for me?
- 5:02Speaker 3: Are there because of the contentious negotiations and like kind
- 5:07Speaker 3: of some misdealings accused from both sides. Is there any
- 5:12Speaker 3: chance that some of these meetings have to be held
- 5:15Speaker 3: with an arbitrator in it, or because these are preliminary meetings,
- 5:18Speaker 3: they don't have to have any kind of fair. I'm
- 5:21Speaker 3: not even sure what the legal term is like fair
- 5:23Speaker 3: negotiating tactics in these meetings, because last year it was
- 5:27Speaker 3: or last CBA, they came to the meeting and they said, hey,
- 5:30Speaker 3: here's our offer, and then part of fair negotiating, you're
- 5:33Speaker 3: supposed to make a counteroffer, and there was never counteroffers.
- 5:36Speaker 3: So is there anything like that that has to happen
- 5:38Speaker 3: this time?
- 5:39Speaker 2: No, And what you're referring to, I think eric is
- 5:44Speaker 2: a charge of unfair labor practices that might result from
- 5:48Speaker 2: contentious negotiation that ultimately could be part of the outcome
- 5:53Speaker 2: here I don't necessarily expected. But you don't have an
- 5:56Speaker 2: arbitrator sitting there, even in these kinds of meetings, and
- 5:59Speaker 2: you don't have one sitting there at the end. It's
- 6:01Speaker 2: not how this works. They just meet, they negotiate, they
- 6:05Speaker 2: go back talk to their own people on both sides,
- 6:08Speaker 2: and try to figure out solutions. And that's just generally
- 6:12Speaker 2: how these things work.
- 6:15Speaker 5: Krats pop quiz. What has thirty five grams of protein,

- 7:16Speaker 2: KEN.
- 7:17Speaker 4: In terms of on the field, the Texas Rangers are
- 7:19Speaker 4: one of the more interesting teams this offseason. Of course,
- 7:22Speaker 4: we saw them win their first World Series in franchise
- 7:24Speaker 4: history in twenty twenty three. Twenty twenty four, things didn't
- 7:28Speaker 4: go the way they'd hope. They finished under five hundred
- 7:30Speaker 4: last year eighty one and eighty one. Right at five hundred,
- 7:33Speaker 4: Bruce Bochi stepped away. Skip Schumacher is now their new manager.
- 7:37Speaker 4: This is just an interesting team to kind of figure
- 7:39Speaker 4: out what direction they're going in. What are you hearing,
- 7:42Speaker 4: what are you seeing, and what do you expect from
- 7:44Speaker 4: the Texas Rangers here moving into twenty twenty six.
- 7:47Speaker 2: First of all, Kyli agree with you. They are quite
- 7:49Speaker 2: an interesting team. And first off, they've got to figure
- 7:53Speaker 2: out where the payroll is and they're like a number
- 7:56Speaker 2: of clubs right now that don't have a clear direction yet.
- 7:59Speaker 2: Perhaps the results of the luxury tax payrolls will influence
- 8:06Speaker 2: them one way or the other. It seems were under
- 8:09Speaker 2: based on what was out there publicly, but they want
- 8:12Speaker 2: to know for sure they were under, rather than perhaps
- 8:14Speaker 2: being over and getting penalized again as a third time offender.
- 8:17Speaker 2: So that's one thing that's going on. But they are
- 8:21Speaker 2: in a position where they are going to reduce payroll
- 8:23Speaker 2: and that's not really a secret. The question is how
- 8:26Speaker 2: do you do it. You've got two guys they can
- 8:29Speaker 2: non tender. I don't expect them non tender both, but
- 8:31Speaker 2: it could be certainly one of them. Adolis Garcia and
- 8:34Speaker 2: Jonah heim Garcia is making more money than him, and
- 8:39Speaker 2: by non tendering one or long shot both, you would
- 8:44Speaker 2: save some money and then you could go forward with
- 8:48Speaker 2: what you want to do in the off season. But
- 8:50Speaker 2: I don't expect them to be as aggressive in the
- 8:52Speaker 2: off season as they've maybe been in the past couple
- 8:55Speaker 2: of years. And what would really be interesting would be
- 8:58Speaker 2: if they could move one of their bigger cons. Now
- 9:00Speaker 2: I don't see that happening. Marcus Simeon would probably be
- 9:03Speaker 2: the only one, and he's in decline and he's owed
- 9:05Speaker 2: a lot of money still. But the question I think
- 9:09Speaker 2: is how far will they go to free up money
- 9:11Speaker 2: so they can do other things knowing that their payroll
- 9:14Speaker 2: is going to go down. And they're an interesting case
- 9:16Speaker 2: study for other reasons as well. Kyle, here's a team
- 9:21Speaker 2: that were kind of the anti Blue Jays last year.
- 9:24Speaker 2: The blue Jays I was critical of in the past
- 9:26Speaker 2: for not getting the most out of their talent. The
- 9:28Speaker 2: Rangers have kind of been that way offensively for a
- 9:31Speaker 2: couple of years now. They're better on paper than they
- 9:34Speaker 2: play on the field, and it's going to be really
- 9:37Speaker 2: interesting to see how that dynamic might change. With Drew
- 9:40Speaker 2: Mocker now taking over. They also need to address their
- 9:43Speaker 2: pitching and they've got some other things that they're going
- 9:47Speaker 2: to have to do as well. But it is one
- 9:49Speaker 2: of those teams that, yeah, you're gonna be watching closely
- 9:52Speaker 2: this offseason because they can go in a couple of
- 9:55Speaker 2: different directions.
- 9:57Speaker 1: Keim, what do you think? I mean? Yes, they can
- 9:59Speaker 1: go in a couple different directions. But then you have
- 10:01Speaker 1: like the Twins who are also saying, oh, we could
- 10:04Speaker 1: try and compete, but we don't know yet, Like when
- 10:06Speaker 1: do you know? You should already know, right, because like
- 10:10Speaker 1: the Rangers know what they're gonna do. They know who
- 10:13Speaker 1: they have on our contract, and they know what they need.
- 10:15Speaker 1: The Twins know what they need. They traded their whole
- 10:17Speaker 1: team away, so now they're gonna say, we're gonna try
- 10:19Speaker 1: and compete, so now we have to buy all these guys.
- 10:21Speaker 1: Like that's what I understanding, Like when do you know
- 10:23Speaker 1: as a team January first, after the winter meetings? How
- 10:27Speaker 1: do you not know? Like you should know it?
- 10:30Speaker 2: And I hear this from a couple of teams or
- 10:32Speaker 2: a number of teams. Actually the Twins are one of
- 10:34Speaker 2: them that we don't have our budget yet, we're not
- 10:36Speaker 2: sure exactly what we're dealing with. That's an ownership call.
- 10:40Speaker 2: Ownership has to make that decision where they are with
- 10:42Speaker 2: the budget and how much they're going to allocate from
- 10:45Speaker 2: major league payroll. All of that. Now, the Twins are
- 10:49Speaker 2: really interesting as well, because if you read Dan Hayes's
- 10:52Speaker 2: story in The Athletic Today and you see Derek Falvey's quotes.
- 10:57Speaker 2: Derek is the president of baseball operations for the Twins,
- 11:00Speaker 2: he is basically saying he wants to compete. He doesn't
- 11:03Speaker 2: want to go backwards anymore. He wants to go and
- 11:05Speaker 2: add to this team. They have talent they can build
- 11:08Speaker 2: around Pablo Lopez, Joe Ryan, and Byron Buxton for starters
- 11:13Speaker 2: and that's a pretty good nucleus of players that But
- 11:18Speaker 2: will they continue what they did at the deadline, which
- 11:21Speaker 2: is just tear it down And here's an ownership group
- 11:24Speaker 2: that just took it on the two minority investors. A
- 11:27Speaker 2: big part of that they're thinking was to help pay
- 11:31Speaker 2: down the debt. Have the minority investors the money that
- 11:33Speaker 2: they're infusing into the organization pay down their significant debt.
- 11:37Speaker 2: But how about putting money back into the team at
- 11:41Speaker 2: a time when you've also liked the Rangers hired a
- 11:44Speaker 2: new manager, Derek Shelton, and at a time also when
- 11:48Speaker 2: your fans are as alienated as I can ever remember
- 11:51Speaker 2: Twins fans being. And maybe I'm a victim of recency
- 11:55Speaker 2: bias here, but I don't remember the last time Twins
- 11:57Speaker 2: fans with this disaffected with their team, and two and
- 12:01Speaker 2: two that's a long time ago. Okay, that's fair, but
- 12:05Speaker 2: that's a long time ago. And the way to get
- 12:08Speaker 2: fans back is to show you care about the product
- 12:10Speaker 2: on the field, and that's what's been lacking the last
- 12:13Speaker 2: couple of years.
- 12:14Speaker 3: Do you believe, then, when these teams say it, because
- 12:16Speaker 3: these teams are owned by billionaires who run businesses, if
- 12:20Speaker 3: the billionaire was going up to the last month before
- 12:22Speaker 3: the fiscal year and said, just not shore our budget.
- 12:25Speaker 3: They're setting their budgets sometimes years out in advance. Do
- 12:29Speaker 3: you believe these teams really don't know their budget or
- 12:32Speaker 3: is it just the hey, you know, we're putting on
- 12:34Speaker 3: the face of we're not sure how much we're gonna
- 12:36Speaker 3: spend free agency. Sorry, you're not gonna get a lot
- 12:39Speaker 3: of money.
- 12:40Speaker 2: Eric. Is a curious thing to me, and maybe you're
- 12:44Speaker 2: right that it's masquerade to show the players, and we
- 12:48Speaker 2: don't know exactly what we're gonna spend, then you should
- 12:50Speaker 2: be too excited. I don't know, but when you hear
- 12:53Speaker 2: the Baseball operations people talk about this particular kind of
- 12:57Speaker 2: situation that we don't know our budget yet, I don't
- 13:00Speaker 2: believe they're lying. For whatever reason. Maybe ownership or just
- 13:05Speaker 2: ownerships are just taking stock of what happened in the
- 13:08Speaker 2: season and trying to figure out where they are and
- 13:11Speaker 2: not entirely sure yet.
- 13:13Speaker 4: But you're right.
- 13:14Speaker 2: It's November twelfth here, offseason has started, free agent market
- 13:18Speaker 2: is open in the meetings are a couple of weeks away.
- 13:21Speaker 2: Let's go, And I would anticipate that even for a
- 13:25Speaker 2: team like the Twins that has had off field things
- 13:27Speaker 2: going on right, left and right, the ownership situation, with
- 13:31Speaker 2: the investors coming in, the firing of a manager, they
- 13:34Speaker 2: can get to the budget at some point soon, you
- 13:37Speaker 2: would think, if they haven't gotten to it already, I.
- 13:40Speaker 1: Know how to get under the budget.
- 13:41Speaker 3: Have a guy sign a sixteen million dollar contract that
- 13:44Speaker 3: you didn't know he was going to pick the option
- 13:46Speaker 3: up and he could be worth fifty million on the market.
- 13:48Speaker 3: Can you talk about the Shane Bieber not fall out,
- 13:52Speaker 3: because I think it's awesome for him if he's happy.
- 13:55Speaker 3: But what you've heard from executives other teams around the
- 13:59Speaker 3: league him accepting what we feel like is below market.
- 14:03Speaker 2: Yes, I wrote about this yesterday and I've heard consistently
- 14:08Speaker 2: from executives since he decided to pick up his sixteen
- 14:11Speaker 2: million dollar player option that this was one of the
- 14:13Speaker 2: more stunning decisions they've seen, A bizarre decision, baffling decision
- 14:18Speaker 2: by a player who just came off Tommy John surgery,
- 14:22Speaker 2: eighteen months removed, but was very successful for the Blue
- 14:25Speaker 2: Jays in the time that he pitched, and effectively what
- 14:29Speaker 2: he did was take a one year, twelve million dollar
- 14:32Speaker 2: deal because he had a four million dollar buyout if
- 14:34Speaker 2: he declined the player option. So it was curious to
- 14:37Speaker 2: a lot of people, and it remains curious now. Shane
- 14:40Speaker 2: Bieber hasn't really spoken publicly at all about this yet
- 14:44Speaker 2: what his motivations were. We do know that, like I said,
- 14:48Speaker 2: he is eighteen months removed from Tommy John and it's
- 14:51Speaker 2: a process, and he obviously was comfortable in Toronto, happy
- 14:55Speaker 2: in Toronto, like all the Blue Jays players were, and
- 14:57Speaker 2: their families. That's a big thing, and maybe that was
- 15:00Speaker 2: a huge part of his decision, But he could have
- 15:04Speaker 2: turned down the player option and perhaps negotiated a better
- 15:06Speaker 2: deal with the Blue Jays. One question that has been
- 15:09Speaker 2: raised by the executives was or is okay? Is Shane
- 15:13Speaker 2: Bieber entirely healthy? Is there something going on there? There's
- 15:17Speaker 2: no indication of that. And if you remember, in Game
- 15:20Speaker 2: four of the World Series, he pitched really well, five
- 15:22Speaker 2: and a third innings, one run, that was it. Picked
- 15:25Speaker 2: Game seventy pitched him relief. He gave up the homer
- 15:28Speaker 2: to Will Smith, but he was pitching on three days rest.
- 15:31Speaker 2: It was his first relief appearance since twenty nineteen, at
- 15:34Speaker 2: the end of a long grind for him, coming off
- 15:37Speaker 2: Tommy John surgery. I wouldn't say that indicates a physical issue,
- 15:41Speaker 2: but again, we don't know exactly what his thinking was.
- 15:45Speaker 2: But as I wrote, until we hear from him and
- 15:48Speaker 2: get a better read on this, there's gonna be a
- 15:51Speaker 2: mystery about this. And it just remains curious to a
- 15:55Speaker 2: lot of people that he did what he did, and
- 15:57Speaker 2: people say, oh, it's great, he took money to stay
- 16:00Speaker 2: in a place he loved. Yes, I get that, but
- 16:03Speaker 2: he could have stayed in a place he loved and
- 16:05Speaker 2: probably got more money. And he certainly could have gotten
- 16:08Speaker 2: a lot more money someplace else, assuming he's healthy. So
- 16:12Speaker 2: while we all would love to paint this as an
- 16:14Speaker 2: altruistic act of loyalty, and maybe it is, I'm not
- 16:19Speaker 2: so sure that's the case. It just seems that there
- 16:21Speaker 2: may be other things going on here. Ken.
- 16:24Speaker 4: Speaking of former Sign Award winners who pitched the Blue
- 16:26Speaker 4: Todays last year, Max Scherzer. You spoke to him. He
- 16:29Speaker 4: says he wants to come back. He's forty one years old,
- 16:32Speaker 4: and look, he's a first ballot Hall of Famer, one
- 16:34Speaker 4: of the greatest pitchers of his generation. He also had
- 16:37Speaker 4: an ERA over five last year. He has not thrown
- 16:39Speaker 4: a hundred innings either of the last two seasons due
- 16:42Speaker 4: to injury. Realistically, what do you expect Max Scherzer's market
- 16:45Speaker 4: to look like?
- 16:47Speaker 2: That's a great question. Last year, Kyle, he earned fifteen
- 16:50Speaker 2: point five million from the Blue Jays, and that was
- 16:52Speaker 2: probably an overpay based on what happened. Right, he did
- 16:55Speaker 2: pitch great in the World Series. Maybe it was worth
- 16:57Speaker 2: it for that alone. But I would expect he's probably
- 17:02Speaker 2: a one year, maybe ten million dollar guy. Maybe it's
- 17:04Speaker 2: fifteen again. I don't know, but the dynamic with him
- 17:08Speaker 2: is interesting. Do the Blue Jays want him back to
- 17:11Speaker 2: the San Francisco Giants? Under his former pitching coach at Missouri,
- 17:16Speaker 2: Tony Vitello won him in kind of a pitching role, obviously,
- 17:21Speaker 2: but also a leadership role, kind of as a buffer
- 17:24Speaker 2: between the players and Vitello, or a guy who just explains,
- 17:26Speaker 2: hey is so this guy thinks he kind of serves
- 17:29Speaker 2: as his advocate in the clubhouse. That would seem to
- 17:32Speaker 2: me to make a lot of sense if you're the Giants.
- 17:34Speaker 2: So I do expect he is going to pitch again.
- 17:36Speaker 2: He says he's healthy, his thumb issue is behind him.
- 17:40Speaker 2: The question is where, and the question is how much.
- 17:43Speaker 2: He certainly has made a ton of money in his career.
- 17:45Speaker 2: He does not need to hold out for X dollars,
- 17:48Speaker 2: But at the same time, it's a respect question and
- 17:51Speaker 2: he's not going to want to play for a minor
- 17:54Speaker 2: league deal either. So we'll see how it plays out.
- 17:57Speaker 2: But I am pretty certain that Max Schurzer is going
- 17:59Speaker 2: to be in a maze juigue camp in spring training
- 18:01Speaker 2: and getting ready for his age forty one season.
- 18:06Speaker 1: We will see what happened san Diego. Can Kyle Glazer
- 18:10Speaker 1: can facilitate the deal san Diego one year deal would
- 18:13Speaker 1: be perfect for him.
- 18:15Speaker 2: San Diego needs starting pitching. I can't rule it out.
- 18:19Speaker 4: We will see what happens.
- 18:20Speaker 2: Ken.
- 18:21Speaker 4: Thank you so much for joining us, and everyone, please
- 18:23Speaker 4: don't forget to check out Fair Territory. Yesterday's episode is
- 18:26Speaker 4: out right now, and Ken will be back tomorrow with
- 18:29Speaker 4: a fresh episode at twelve thirty pm Eastern.
- 18:36Speaker 2: Camp.
- 18:39Speaker 4: All right, guys, so yesterday Ben Charrington spoke to reporters
- 18:43Speaker 4: and let everyone know that Paul Schemes will not be trained.
- 18:48Speaker 4: He will be a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates in
- 18:50Speaker 4: twenty twenty six. This is something that I think realistical.
- 18:54Speaker 4: We all knew, but people like to talk about it,
- 18:57Speaker 4: especially given the pirates unwillingness to spend agent. I'll start
- 19:01Speaker 4: with you, Paul Skiing remaining in Pittsburgh for at least
- 19:04Speaker 4: one more season. What are overall thoughts.
- 19:08Speaker 1: It says in the twenty twenties. It just says in
- 19:10Speaker 1: the off season. It doesn't say it the trade deadline.
- 19:12Speaker 1: It says in the off season. Okay, let's get it
- 19:15Speaker 1: because this will be what will happen if they do
- 19:17Speaker 1: get a great deal and they trade him, they'll be like, well,
- 19:19Speaker 1: we said we weren't trading him in the off season,
- 19:21Speaker 1: but we can get stuff for him. So I'm not
- 19:24Speaker 1: surprised they have to do this. Listen, They've already have
- 19:26Speaker 1: no good will right now. We talked about the Twins
- 19:28Speaker 1: earlier and how they don't have a lot of good
- 19:29Speaker 1: will with their fans. The pirates don't have a lot
- 19:32Speaker 1: of good will with their fans. When the fans are
- 19:33Speaker 1: chasing the owner through the concourse, you know, there's not
- 19:36Speaker 1: a lot of good will. So this is not a surprise.
- 19:39Speaker 1: I think he will eventually get traded because he's gonna
- 19:41Speaker 1: price himself out of Pittsburgh. But the hero at this year,
- 19:44Speaker 1: he's only in his third year. He hasn't even got
- 19:46Speaker 1: the arbitration yet. Of course they're not trading him. He's
- 19:48Speaker 1: making the league minimum. He's the best deal in the world.
- 19:52Speaker 1: Ben Chington.
- 19:54Speaker 4: Ben Ben Charrington's response. Officially, you know, the question gets asked.
- 19:59Speaker 4: It's always respectful. Teams have to ask the question, right.
- 20:02Speaker 4: I suspect that won't end. But the answer has been
- 20:04Speaker 4: consistent and aj to your point, Paul Skins is making
- 20:06Speaker 4: the minimum. The Pirates still have team control over him
- 20:09Speaker 4: for the next four seasons. He's going to bring back
- 20:12Speaker 4: a Hall three years from now if it comes to it.
- 20:14Speaker 4: It's not like if they don't trade him now, they're
- 20:16Speaker 4: not going to get some massive package. So it does
- 20:18Speaker 4: make sense. Hey, you have this generational talent, build around them.
- 20:25Speaker 1: This is the love that was funny Kyle. Yeah, that's why.
- 20:33Speaker 3: And that's why as laughing, like like, build around him
- 20:36Speaker 3: or have a plan. We talked about with Ken. Teams
- 20:39Speaker 3: have plans. Owners know how much money they're going to spend.
- 20:42Speaker 3: And I'm not even just talk about like money spending
- 20:45Speaker 3: with the Pirates here because they're not going to it's
- 20:48Speaker 3: what's your plan? When do you truly see your current
- 20:51Speaker 3: roster maturing developing being in the big leagues? It's Connor
- 20:56Speaker 3: Griffin going to be that guy? Is Connor Griffin going
- 20:58Speaker 3: to be Andrew Cutchen Because you have to you have
- 21:02Speaker 3: to look at the past and say, well, how did
- 21:03Speaker 3: we do it before? Because we got we got Andrew McCutcheon,
- 21:08Speaker 3: Neil Walker, Pedro Alvarez, guys that were coming up, and
- 21:11Speaker 3: then you supplemented some older minor league guys that ended
- 21:15Speaker 3: up doing well in there, like a Garrett Jones type,
- 21:18Speaker 3: And then you had Garrett Cole and you added Russell Martin,
- 21:23Speaker 3: you added aj Burnett like this is how you made
- 21:26Speaker 3: it to and Starling Marte was then a little bit
- 21:29Speaker 3: behind those guys.
- 21:30Speaker 1: This is how you made it to the playoffs.
- 21:32Speaker 3: So if you truly want to win, which is a
- 21:34Speaker 3: little deep asque, I think there's a better chance Bob
- 21:36Speaker 3: Nutting wants to spend money then he wants to win.
- 21:40Speaker 3: But as a front office you gotta want to win.
- 21:43Speaker 3: At some point, why not say, Okay, Paul Skeen's is
- 21:47Speaker 3: gonna cost us ten Linsicum type of money and arbitration
- 21:51Speaker 3: because nobody's done what Paul Skeens is done besides linccom.
- 21:54Speaker 3: I think he had two syms before his arbitration, and
- 21:57Speaker 3: I think he signed for two forty million. Well you
- 22:02Speaker 3: know that ain't happening. So to me, Paul Skeens should
- 22:06Speaker 3: not be a Pirate after this season. Pirate fans might
- 22:09Speaker 3: get pissed at me, but I see it as if
- 22:11Speaker 3: I'm Ben Charrington, I want to say, what will put
- 22:14Speaker 3: us in the driver's seat to be in the playoffs
- 22:18Speaker 3: without ever getting any free agents. And to me, if
- 22:22Speaker 3: Juan Soto got a James Wood cj Abrams, Mackenzie Gore,
- 22:31Speaker 3: I forget Robert Haslin. I think he was the other
- 22:34Speaker 3: one in that deal, four of their current big leaguers.
- 22:37Speaker 3: Then what can the Pirates get for Paul Skeens if
- 22:40Speaker 3: they trade him after this next season because they don't
- 22:42Speaker 3: want to pay his arbitration money. Even if it is arbitration,
- 22:46Speaker 3: there's no good one year deal for the Pirates if
- 22:48Speaker 3: it's over ten million, and Paul Skeens is gonna get
- 22:50Speaker 3: a ton of money. So think outside the box. From
- 22:52Speaker 3: you're Sharrington, they're gonna fire you soon anyway because they
- 22:55Speaker 3: don't want to spend money and that's tough to win.
- 22:58Speaker 3: So do something outside the box.
- 23:02Speaker 4: So in terms of Paul Skins' future, again, ben Cherrington's
- 23:05Speaker 4: saying that they will not.
- 23:06Speaker 1: Ben Rington doesn't want to. Ben Cherrington doesn't want to
- 23:09Speaker 1: be the guy that traded Paul Skeins because you know
- 23:11Speaker 1: what what happened to hein blue Heim Balloon's legacy. I
- 23:13Speaker 1: even know a lot of these guys are Heine Bloom
- 23:15Speaker 1: draft picks that are there now. He's the guy that
- 23:17Speaker 1: traded Mookie Bets. I understand that. But people don't look
- 23:23Speaker 1: at him blue and say, man, he drafted Anthony Meyern
- 23:25Speaker 1: Campbell and all these other guys. They're like, Oh, he's
- 23:27Speaker 1: the guy that traded Mookie Bets for Jeter Downs and
- 23:31Speaker 1: Connor Wong and whoever the heck else they got for him. Right,
- 23:33Speaker 1: that's the legacy, and that's for Ben Cherrington. If he's
- 23:36Speaker 1: the guy that has to trade Paul Skeins and all
- 23:40Speaker 1: the players he get back don't hit, that's gonna be
- 23:44Speaker 1: his lasting legacy and he's gonna have a hard time
- 23:46Speaker 1: finding another job.
- 23:47Speaker 3: I'm sorry, do it.
- 23:48Speaker 4: So if and when the Pirates do decide to make
- 23:52Speaker 4: a move. There's an interesting article in NJ Advanced Media
- 23:55Speaker 4: the other day. According to a Pirates teammate who spoke anonymously,
- 23:59Speaker 4: Skens has quote no confidence the Pirates are ever going
- 24:02Speaker 4: to win end quote with him in Pittsburgh, and he's
- 24:05Speaker 4: quote hoping for a trade end quote well before he
- 24:08Speaker 4: can become a free agent after the twenty twenty nine season.
- 24:11Speaker 2: Quote.
- 24:11Speaker 4: Trust me, he wants to play for the Yankees. The
- 24:14Speaker 4: Skins teammates said I've heard him say it multiple times.
- 24:17Speaker 4: When asked, Ben Sherrington responded, I do dismiss it, but
- 24:21Speaker 4: I understand it. What we're going to focus on is
- 24:23Speaker 4: just how do we win games with him in a
- 24:25Speaker 4: Pirate's uniform? Future Paul Skins with the New York Yankees? Eric,
- 24:31Speaker 4: what do you think?
- 24:32Speaker 1: I mean New York Yankees.
- 24:34Speaker 3: They're like, yes, please, we'll take it. We would definitely
- 24:38Speaker 3: take of Paul Skins as with all twenty eight other teams,
- 24:41Speaker 3: because the Pirates have him right now. And for him
- 24:45Speaker 3: to say that to it from an anonymous source, I'm
- 24:48Speaker 3: not saying it's a lie that this person said it,
- 24:50Speaker 3: but you know, what was the context? Where would you
- 24:53Speaker 3: like to Where would you like to play? I want
- 24:55Speaker 3: to play somewhere where I'm freaking in the playoffs every
- 24:58Speaker 3: single year? And as a baseball don't you want Paul
- 25:01Speaker 3: Skins in the playoffs every year? Don't we want Mike
- 25:04Speaker 3: Trout in the playoffs every year? Like you talk about
- 25:06Speaker 3: wasting years of a player's career, He's gonna win another
- 25:09Speaker 3: Cy young and he's not sniffing the playoffs after May?
- 25:15Speaker 3: How is that? How is that good for baseball? It's
- 25:18Speaker 3: not So Paul Skeins is just saying the same thing
- 25:21Speaker 3: that every other that every other fan is saying. I mean,
- 25:24Speaker 3: I'm sure that some fans that are like, well I
- 25:25Speaker 3: don't want to see him go to the Yankees, Well,
- 25:27Speaker 3: you don't have a choice. The Yankees would sell the farm.
- 25:32Speaker 3: I talked to a scout that said, how hard would
- 25:34Speaker 3: it be? It would not be hard for a team
- 25:36Speaker 3: to trade for Paul Skins. It's hard for the Pirates
- 25:39Speaker 3: to trade Paul Skins because how do you even put
- 25:43Speaker 3: a value on what you're getting back? Like, and who's
- 25:46Speaker 3: to say, Like AJ said that each of those guys
- 25:49Speaker 3: is gonna hit, not just not just hitters but pitchers too,
- 25:52Speaker 3: who's to say each of those guys is going to
- 25:54Speaker 3: be a big league player. But yes, the Yankees would
- 25:59Speaker 3: love it. Yes, he would it because he wants to
- 26:00Speaker 3: be in the playoffs. You can see it, like sometimes
- 26:02Speaker 3: he comes off the field and he's like looking.
- 26:04Speaker 1: Around, like, man, I would love to be winning this game.
- 26:08Speaker 3: But again, eleven runs in his ten in his ten losses, Like,
- 26:14Speaker 3: you're not You're not set up to win. Imagine what
- 26:16Speaker 3: this guy could do if he was put in a
- 26:18Speaker 3: situation where hey, we need you to go seven tonight.
- 26:21Speaker 3: Why oh, because we got to get the dub this.
- 26:24Speaker 3: He's built for this.
- 26:28Speaker 1: I mean I played with Mark Burley. I played with
- 26:31Speaker 1: Mark Burley, right, he was he was always mister Cardinal.
- 26:33Speaker 1: I want to play for the Cardinals. I want to
- 26:35Speaker 1: play for the Cardinals. He never went to the Cardinals
- 26:37Speaker 1: like I was. I was a Braves fan growing up, right.
- 26:40Speaker 1: I finally got to play the Braves when I was
- 26:42Speaker 1: a free agent at the end of my career, and
- 26:44Speaker 1: they were dog crap, right, But I got to go
- 26:46Speaker 1: there and play there and it was awesome. But just
- 26:49Speaker 1: because like guys talk about this all the time, I
- 26:51Speaker 1: want to go here. I want to play here. I
- 26:53Speaker 1: want to But it doesn't always work unless you're a
- 26:55Speaker 1: free agent and they give you the best money. But
- 26:57Speaker 1: for someone like Skiens, he might not get to where
- 27:00Speaker 1: he goes until he becomes a free agent. So this
- 27:02Speaker 1: is just again who said it? You know, you put
- 27:05Speaker 1: your name on it.
- 27:07Speaker 4: One of the things with Skemes is he is not
- 27:10Speaker 4: the biggest personality. Right, He's pretty bland. There's not a
- 27:15Speaker 4: whole lot he's gonna say that's controversial, And we had
- 27:17Speaker 4: seen that type of personality really thrive with the New
- 27:21Speaker 4: York Yankees. You look at a Derek Jeter, you look
- 27:23Speaker 4: at an Aaron Judge, Eric, what do you think about
- 27:26Speaker 4: just his personality and how it would play in the
- 27:28Speaker 4: Big Apple. Because we know that talent's a big part
- 27:30Speaker 4: of it, but playing for the Yankees, it's a whole
- 27:32Speaker 4: different ballgame, and who you are as a person plays
- 27:34Speaker 4: a big, big role in how you're treated, both by
- 27:36Speaker 4: the fans on the media.
- 27:38Speaker 3: Hey, dude, plenty fine he gives. I mean when we
- 27:42Speaker 3: talked to him, I thought he was I thought he
- 27:43Speaker 3: was very personable. You know, he puts off this like
- 27:45Speaker 3: quiet persona. But when he was on our show, we
- 27:49Speaker 3: had a good time. He seemed to loosen up. But look,
- 27:53Speaker 3: if he was in the Big Apple right now, with
- 27:55Speaker 3: the career that he's had, there is nothing they could say,
- 27:59Speaker 3: There is no they would they will love this man
- 28:02Speaker 3: as long as he does well. There's there are no
- 28:05Speaker 3: players that do really well in the Big Apple that
- 28:09Speaker 3: fans are like, yeah, this guy's a bomb, Like yeah,
- 28:13Speaker 3: Aaron Judge becomes a bum in the playoffs because the
- 28:16Speaker 3: fans are like, yeah, you always got a hit in
- 28:19Speaker 3: the playoffs.
- 28:19Speaker 1: They're never pleased.
- 28:21Speaker 3: Paul Skeens has never had He hasn't had a blip
- 28:24Speaker 3: in the radar, so there's nothing for them to not
- 28:26Speaker 3: be pleased about. But I think it's to me as
- 28:28Speaker 3: demeanor looks. See it looks and seems obviously don't know
- 28:32Speaker 3: the guy, but it looks and seems like he would.
- 28:33Speaker 1: He would thrive, there.
- 28:36Speaker 2: No question about it.

- 29:56Speaker 4: One piece of news that came out today, David Fletcher,
- 29:59Speaker 4: long time Major League infielder who tried to convert to
- 30:02Speaker 4: a two way player, mounts his retirement today after seven
- 30:05Speaker 4: seasons in the Majors. Had a few very very productive
- 30:08Speaker 4: years with the Angels. Looked like he could have been
- 30:10Speaker 4: a long term piece for them. Ultimately just wasn't able
- 30:12Speaker 4: to sustain it. I did think it was interesting he
- 30:14Speaker 4: tried to reinvent himself as a knuckleballer and a two
- 30:17Speaker 4: way player. Clearly didn't quite work out, but again, all
- 30:21Speaker 4: in all, play seven seasons in the big leagues. That's
- 30:23Speaker 4: a career to be proud of.
- 30:26Speaker 1: Congratulations on a great career. You gave it everything you had.
- 30:29Speaker 1: He even tried to be a knuckleballer. It's not as
- 30:31Speaker 1: easy as people think. But congratulations on a great career.
- 30:34Speaker 3: I mean, cool, one hundred and one innings, eighteen starts
- 30:39Speaker 3: in the bushes. I mean he was throwing a knuckle
- 30:41Speaker 3: puck up there. So I don't know, I don't know.
- 30:45Speaker 3: I like, obviously somebody that bounced around from Triple A
- 30:48Speaker 3: to the big leagues to go back to be a
- 30:51Speaker 3: starting pitcher, and then you're like, hey, we need you
- 30:53Speaker 3: to go back to High A to start pitching and
- 30:55Speaker 3: learning pitching again. I'd be like, maybe I don't want
- 30:59Speaker 3: to go to pitching again.
- 31:02Speaker 4: Since both you guys were catchers, Eric, I want to
- 31:04Speaker 4: start with you. Is there a place for knuckleballers in
- 31:07Speaker 4: today's game with the emphasis on velocity.
- 31:09Speaker 3: If you get out, you get out.
- 31:11Speaker 1: Yes, if your ball avoids hard contact one hundred percent,
- 31:16Speaker 1: there is a place for you. You don't have to throw
- 31:17Speaker 1: There's a dude on Twitter the other day. I think
- 31:20Speaker 1: he threw his knuckleball like eighty nine miles an hour.
- 31:23Speaker 1: We don't need that. We don't need somebody throwing the
- 31:24Speaker 1: ball that hard like you're gonna hurt a catcher. Just
- 31:28Speaker 1: get that knuckle pup moving.
- 31:29Speaker 4: That's it, guys, A legend is being replaced. The Freeze
- 31:34Speaker 4: is going to have a new man behind the mask
- 31:36Speaker 4: in Atlanta a J. I want to ask you during
- 31:39Speaker 4: your tenure with the Braves, did you ever meet the Freeze?
- 31:41Speaker 4: Did you have any interactions with Oh?
- 31:43Speaker 1: Because he wasn't there because it was they weren't in
- 31:46Speaker 1: the new stadium, so they didn't have the Freeze. All
- 31:48Speaker 1: they had was the tool race. And if you haven't
- 31:53Speaker 1: seen the video of me dominating the tools and letting
- 31:56Speaker 1: two bit the drill win, you should google it because
- 31:58Speaker 1: it's amazing when I tackled Hammering and the rest of them.
- 32:01Speaker 1: So he was not there, But I'm mad he was
- 32:04Speaker 1: not there because I would have liked to have watched
- 32:07Speaker 1: these people try and fail miserably to beat him. And
- 32:09Speaker 1: it's a sad day. If they can't find a new Freeze,
- 32:11Speaker 1: they're gonna have to do something.
- 32:13Speaker 2: Now.
- 32:13Speaker 1: People keep saying that I should do that. Nobody likes running,
- 32:16Speaker 1: even people that run, they don't like running. They're lying.
- 32:19Speaker 1: They're lying to you saying they like running. Nobody likes running.
- 32:22Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 32:23Speaker 4: The list of requirements is interesting. On the job description.
- 32:26Speaker 4: Must be physically fit and in good health to endure
- 32:28Speaker 4: conditions including extreme high and low temperatures. Must be able
- 32:33Speaker 4: to run during the racetrack, beat the freeze on field promotion.
- 32:36Speaker 4: Previous mascot or athletic experience preferred, but not acquired. Rely
- 32:39Speaker 4: to interact with large crowds, families and children. It's a
- 32:42Speaker 4: pretty long job description with Look, this is something where
- 32:44Speaker 4: it's not just going to be hey, an Olympic sprinter.
- 32:46Speaker 1: They want a lot yeah, and then they want a
- 32:49Speaker 1: lot of time and you have to be there and
- 32:50Speaker 1: you have to wear those tights too. I don't know
- 32:52Speaker 1: that I could pull off the tights. The tights would
- 32:54Speaker 1: be a problem, especially if it's cold. Man. I don't
- 32:58Speaker 1: want to be out there running running tights and tights only.
- 33:00Speaker 4: All right, guys. One of your fellow brethren, catcher Austin Nola,
- 33:03Speaker 4: signed a minor league contract this winter with the Braves,
- 33:06Speaker 4: but he's actually been granted his release to become the
- 33:09Speaker 4: Mariners new bullpen coach. Ah, I'll start with you in
- 33:13Speaker 4: this transition from behind the plate to a bullpen coach.
- 33:17Speaker 2: What do you see?
- 33:18Speaker 4: What are the challenges, and just what do you make
- 33:19Speaker 4: of this news?
- 33:21Speaker 1: Great for Austin Nola. I mean, he probably wasn't gonna
- 33:23Speaker 1: make the Braves out of spring training, so you know
- 33:25Speaker 1: what he gets, he gets a guaranteed big league job.
- 33:27Speaker 1: I don't know if he's gonna be on the pension
- 33:28Speaker 1: and all that stuff, but I think this is awesome.
- 33:30Speaker 1: Good for him. He played there, he played in Seattle,
- 33:33Speaker 1: so they know him. I think they like him, and
- 33:35Speaker 1: I think bullpen coach is the one job Cratzy that
- 33:39Speaker 1: is great. You know why, because they never fire the
- 33:41Speaker 1: bullpen coach. Bullpen coaches last forever if you're good at it.
- 33:44Speaker 1: I mean, I had Rick stell Mazic in Minnesota. He
- 33:47Speaker 1: was there for like forty five years. He was there forever.
- 33:50Speaker 1: And bullpen coaches they don't ever get fired. They just
- 33:55Speaker 1: I'm just gonna stand there with my clipboard and tell
- 33:57Speaker 1: whoever's coming andres munios when you come in. Though, that's
- 34:00Speaker 1: that Nobody can hit. Look how good I am.
- 34:02Speaker 3: And look at the last bullpen coach that got hired
- 34:05Speaker 3: out of Seattle, Steven Vote. He's now back to back
- 34:09Speaker 3: manager of the Year, So there's something in there. I
- 34:12Speaker 3: saw Austin last year in Boston and it was a
- 34:15Speaker 3: grind for him. He dealt with playing, he dealt with
- 34:18Speaker 3: concussions and it kind of got him out of the game.
- 34:20Speaker 3: He was like, you know, I was playing, I was
- 34:22Speaker 3: playing through these concussion symptoms and the sort of finally
- 34:26Speaker 3: get back to the big leagues last year. This is
- 34:28Speaker 3: this is awesome. We'll go from playing essentially in the
- 34:31Speaker 3: bushes to now coaching in the big leagues.
- 34:34Speaker 2: Sweet.
- 34:36Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 34:37Speaker 4: And also know why I got to cover him a
- 34:39Speaker 4: lot when he was in San Diego and one of
- 34:41Speaker 4: those guys that you could tell had to coaching future,
- 34:43Speaker 4: very very bright, natural leader all the way around. And
- 34:46Speaker 4: like you said, Ed Jay, bullpen coaches is a pretty
- 34:48Speaker 4: sweet gig. We just saw, you know, Ben Fritz got
- 34:51Speaker 4: a multi year extension from the Padres And again it's
- 34:54Speaker 4: a job that you rarely get fired, but sometimes you
- 34:56Speaker 4: can get that nice extension.
- 34:58Speaker 1: Yeah, And does anybody know who most bullpen coaches are?
- 35:02Speaker 1: Does does anybody really pay attention to All they know is, Hey,
- 35:04Speaker 1: there's this guy that's standing there with the clipboard next
- 35:06Speaker 1: to the guy warming up, but he's just like, who
- 35:09Speaker 1: knows what he's saying. They can be talking about dinner, resort. Look,
- 35:11Speaker 1: I got reservations for the next road trip lined up.
- 35:13Speaker 1: You want to see him? Maybe we can go together, right,
- 35:16Speaker 1: I mean, and they usually can throw BP. I'm assuming
- 35:18Speaker 1: Austin Olla cold throw some VP. They a lot of
- 35:20Speaker 1: bullpen coaches sometimes have to rub the balls up before, so,
- 35:23Speaker 1: I mean, they have duties, but kind of like the
- 35:26Speaker 1: assistant pitching coach a little bit too
