- 0:00Dot com Welcome to The Daily Quote, a podcast designed to
- 0:07kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:10I'm your host, Andrew Mcgibbon for August 19th.
- 0:13Today is National Potato Day, celebrating one of the world's
- 0:16most beloved and versatile foods.
- 0:18Whether you call them spuds, taters, or just plain potatoes,
- 0:22these humble tubers have quietly become one of humanity's most
- 0:26important crops. The potato has an incredible
- 0:29history. Originally cultivated in the
- 0:32Andes Mountains of South America over 8000 years ago by the Inca
- 0:37people, potatoes were brought to Europe by Spanish conquistadors
- 0:40in the 16th century. From there, they spread across
- 0:44the globe and became a staple food and countless cultures.
- 0:48Today, there are over 100 different varieties of potatoes
- 0:51worldwide, and they're the 4th largest food crop on the planet
- 0:55after rice, wheat, and corn. Not bad for something that was
- 1:00once considered poisonous by Europeans who didn't know you
- 1:04weren't supposed to eat the green parts.
- 1:07What makes potatoes truly remarkable is their versatility.
- 1:11You can bake them, fry them, mash them, boil them, roast
- 1:14them, or turn them into chips, hash Browns, gnocchi, or French
- 1:17fries. Their comfort food at its
- 1:20finest. The reliable side dish that
- 1:22makes almost any meal better. Which brings us to today's quote
- 1:27from the brilliant author Terry Pratchett, who once said.
- 1:32The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people
- 1:35keep coming along and trying to put things in it.
- 1:40Now, you might be wondering what Terry Pratchett's witty
- 1:42observation has to do with potatoes, but bear with me.
- 1:48There's a connection that's both surprising and profound.
- 1:51Think about the potatoes journey through history.
- 1:54When it first arrived in Europe, people were incredibly close
- 1:58minded about this strange new food.
- 2:01They thought it was poisonous, associated it with disease, and
- 2:05refused to eat it. The French actually banned
- 2:08potato cultivation for decades because they believed it caused
- 2:12leprosy. But gradually, people began to
- 2:16open their minds. They discovered that potatoes
- 2:20were not only safe to eat, but incredibly nutritious and
- 2:24filling. In fact, potatoes became so
- 2:27important that when disease truck potato crops in Ireland in
- 2:30the 1840s, it caused a devastating famine.
- 2:36Pratchett's quote reminds us that having an open mind can be
- 2:40challenging. We're constantly bombarded with
- 2:43new information, new ideas, new foods to try, that sometimes
- 2:49those things people keep trying to put in our open minds are
- 2:53actually treasures in disguise. How many other opportunities,
- 2:57ideas, or experiences have we dismissed too quickly because
- 3:01they seem strange or unfamiliar at first glance?
- 3:07When I was a kid, we had potatoes for dinner every night.
- 3:11My mom is a good cook and she made all sorts of different
- 3:14kinds of potatoes. I especially like her mashed
- 3:17potatoes, and her scalloped potatoes are great too.
- 3:21But when I moved out I took a break from potatoes for a while
- 3:25and later my wife being from France got me hooked on
- 3:29zucchini, which has become the potato in our family.
- 3:34We have them all the time, either zucchini or green beans.
- 3:40But recently I've been returning to the potato, and I love it.
- 3:46Maybe not every day, though. So today, in honor of National
- 3:50Potato Day, maybe consider what Terry Pratchett was really
- 3:54getting at. That.
- 3:56Keeping an open mind despite the challenges often leads to
- 4:00discovering wonderful things we never knew we needed.
- 4:04Whether it's trying a new variety of potato, a different
- 4:07way of preparing them, or even just being open to unfamiliar
- 4:13experiences in general, remember that some of life's greatest
- 4:16pleasures come from the simple act of saying yes to something
- 4:19new. That's going to do it for today.
- 4:22I'm Andy McGivern, signing off for now, but I'll be back
- 4:28tomorrow. Same pod time, same pod station
- 4:34with another daily quote.
