- 1:49Speaker 3: rare midweek appearance for Riley on Sports. Yes, but we
- 1:53Speaker 3: are excited. We continue to find things to talk about,
- 1:57Speaker 3: even though it is fully into the dog days of
- 2:00Speaker 3: summer here in the sports world.
- 2:02Speaker 7: Yeah, the only thing really going on right now is
- 2:04Speaker 7: like what trade deadlines everything? All that Baseball's in middle
- 2:08Speaker 7: Like we're past the middle part.
- 2:10Speaker 8: Of the season. So yeah, we'll see.
- 2:12Speaker 7: I mean, we're one step closer, I guess, to getting
- 2:14Speaker 7: right back into football.
- 2:15Speaker 3: You know what I mean, especially with media days getting started.
- 2:19Speaker 3: The Big Twelve I think was the first major conference
- 2:21Speaker 3: to have their media days. They just wrapped those up
- 2:25Speaker 3: about an hour ago. I think we will hear from
- 2:28Speaker 3: a couple of those coaches today and probably one or
- 2:31Speaker 3: two more Tomorrow. We'll have Willie Fritz, the University of
- 2:35Speaker 3: Houston head coach, at the bottom of this hour, and
- 2:38Speaker 3: then the top of the five o'clock hour we will
- 2:40Speaker 3: hear from Baylor head coach Dave Randa. Miranda's still in
- 2:44Speaker 3: the hot seat. We'll see if he can write it out.
- 2:46Speaker 3: Another year with a new quarterback, DJ Lagway should be interesting.
- 2:50Speaker 8: I don't know.
- 2:50Speaker 7: I went to Baylor my very first year and that was,
- 2:53Speaker 7: oh my gosh. His name just slipped my mind before
- 2:55Speaker 7: we went to the NHL, I mean, not done NFL
- 2:58Speaker 7: good coach Matt something.
- 3:00Speaker 8: I yes, not rule.
- 3:01Speaker 7: Yeah, loved him and everything, and then he wind up
- 3:04Speaker 7: going professional and everything.
- 3:05Speaker 3: And now he's back at Nebraska, which is weird.
- 3:08Speaker 7: Yeah, I still love him. He's one of my favorite
- 3:10Speaker 7: coaches of all time. I enjoyed watching him from the sideline.
- 3:12Speaker 7: He's just a very good coach over on my opinion,
- 3:15Speaker 7: and then he, you know, next person steps in and
- 3:18Speaker 7: Baylor's football team kind of went whoop.
- 3:21Speaker 8: So we'll see. We'll see.
- 3:23Speaker 3: Miranda had that one really good year where they went
- 3:25Speaker 3: to the Sugar Bowl. I think they won like eleven
- 3:26Speaker 3: games or something. That was Blake Shape's freshman year if
- 3:30Speaker 3: I remember correctly, But since then they really haven't been
- 3:34Speaker 3: able to rediscover it. But we'll see, we'll see what
- 3:37Speaker 3: he can do this year. We'll talk about all of
- 3:40Speaker 3: what big twelve Minia days had to offer. In the
- 3:43Speaker 3: five o'clock hour, We're also gonna get into the off
- 3:45Speaker 3: season news from the NHL and the NBA. Lots of
- 3:49Speaker 3: trades and free agency signings happening in those two leagues.
- 3:54Speaker 7: Especially the headline of Lebron James. Dude that as soon
- 3:58Speaker 7: as that possed up on my phone so hard, I'm like, oh,
- 4:01Speaker 7: here we go, Here we go again.
- 4:03Speaker 3: Let's see how many times we can say Lebron James
- 4:05Speaker 3: and this show honestly to drive the algorithm.
- 4:09Speaker 8: He's on our screen right now on the TV in here.
- 4:11Speaker 3: Of course he is. He's on I think Lebron James
- 4:13Speaker 3: probably occupies about ninety percent of the airtime on ESPN.
- 4:17Speaker 7: Yeah, he lives three in every what's the main espxcuse me? Yeah,
- 4:22Speaker 7: he lives rent free in that poor man's my ninety
- 4:24Speaker 7: nine percent.
- 4:25Speaker 8: Of the day.
- 4:26Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm not above it. I will talk about where
- 4:29Speaker 3: I think Lebron will go later, but we don't. We're
- 4:31Speaker 3: not going to get into that right now. Right now.
- 4:33Speaker 3: It is July eighth, twenty twenty six. Happy birthday to
- 4:37Speaker 3: Marcel Reed starting quarterback of your Taxa, A and m
- 4:40Speaker 3: Aggies for the Fall. He turns twenty two today. He
- 4:44Speaker 3: shares a birthday with the first ever Heisman winner for
- 4:47Speaker 3: the Taxa, A and m Aggies, John David Crowe. Fun
- 4:49Speaker 3: fact for you here on a Wednesday. John David Crowe
- 4:52Speaker 3: won the nineteen fifty seven Heisman under legendary coach Bear Bryant.
- 4:58Speaker 3: Crow later served as athletic director at A and M.
- 5:01Speaker 3: He passed away back in twenty fifteen. He would be
- 5:03Speaker 3: ninety one today. Rest in peace. But that's a fun
- 5:06Speaker 3: fact there, that Marcel Reid and John David Crowe share
- 5:09Speaker 3: a birthday. I didn't know that until I was looking
- 5:12Speaker 3: for whose birthday it was this morning and stumbled across
- 5:15Speaker 3: that little tidbit in the world of baseball. What we're
- 5:20Speaker 3: going to talk about mostly here in the first segment,
- 5:24Speaker 3: some interesting things that were happening last night. Royal's utility
- 5:29Speaker 3: man Tyler Tolbert picked up hits in twelve straight plate appearances,
- 5:35Speaker 3: which is a tying the MLB record, and twelve for
- 5:39Speaker 3: twelve is insane. That's that's just absolutely crazy thing to
- 5:43Speaker 3: do in the MLB. Props to him for that. That's
- 5:47Speaker 3: that might be one of the hardest records to break.
- 5:49Speaker 8: In sports, one hundred percent.
- 5:52Speaker 3: Ryan O'Hearn set a franchise record for the Pirates with
- 5:56Speaker 3: ten rbi on Tuesday against the Braves, a grand slam
- 6:00Speaker 3: and two three run homers through six innings of the game,
- 6:03Speaker 3: and then an eighth inning single to give himself a
- 6:06Speaker 3: four hit night. Four hits, three homers, ten RBIs in
- 6:10Speaker 3: one game, So nothing like a little stat padding there
- 6:13Speaker 3: for Ryan O'Hearn. Shoe Aotani has reached the three hundred
- 6:18Speaker 3: home run mark for his career in the MLB in
- 6:23Speaker 3: just his oney one hundred and second game, which is
- 6:26Speaker 3: the fifth fewest all time, So the fifth fastest player
- 6:30Speaker 3: to reach three hundred home runs Shoeotani He'll probably get
- 6:33Speaker 3: to five hundred, he might get to six hundred, who knows, uh.
- 6:36Speaker 3: And Boba Schett with hit number one thousand. So a
- 6:39Speaker 3: few fun milestones in the MLB world, a little bit
- 6:44Speaker 3: of you know, lower on the morale side of things,
- 6:49Speaker 3: the Twins have placed Byron Buckston on the injured list.
- 6:52Speaker 3: Byron Buckston, one of the most athletic and most talented
- 6:57Speaker 3: players that the MLB has, has just never I've never
- 7:00Speaker 3: really been able to stay healthy. He's only played more
- 7:02Speaker 3: than one hundred and two games in a season twice,
- 7:04Speaker 3: and this is his twelfth big league season.
- 7:07Speaker 7: Only I'm just saying, I'm just saying only because that's
- 7:10Speaker 7: so many games.
- 7:11Speaker 3: Well, sure, but it's one hundred and sixty two games season.
- 7:15Speaker 3: But yeah, in any other sport you play one hundred
- 7:17Speaker 3: games in a year and that's extremely impressive, But yeah,
- 7:20Speaker 3: in baseball, that's not really how it works. He has
- 7:23Speaker 3: a right hipstrain, which is an injury that he has
- 7:27Speaker 3: dealt with many times over the last years. He was
- 7:31Speaker 3: on the injury list for about a month back in
- 7:32Speaker 3: twenty twenty one with a right hip strain, and then
- 7:35Speaker 3: again in twenty twenty two twenty twenty four, he was
- 7:38Speaker 3: on the IL for a month, all with right hip inflammation.
- 7:42Speaker 3: So it's been a recurring problem for him. He's somebody
- 7:46Speaker 3: that's always brought up a lot in the trade deadline talks,
- 7:50Speaker 3: which is the season that we're in right now. This year,
- 7:53Speaker 3: it looks like he It's funny because he's one of
- 7:56Speaker 3: those guys that every year people are like, oh, he's
- 7:58Speaker 3: gonna get traded. He's gonna get trade, kind of like
- 8:01Speaker 3: Giannis in the NBA in the last couple of seasons.
- 8:04Speaker 3: But this year he has made it very clear he
- 8:06Speaker 3: wants to stay in Minnesota. He's going to exercise his
- 8:08Speaker 3: no trade clause if a team asks about him, so
- 8:13Speaker 3: he will be staying a Twin. We'll see how much
- 8:16Speaker 3: he's actually on the field for the Twins. I would
- 8:18Speaker 3: love to see him play more because he is one
- 8:20Speaker 3: of the most electric players in the sport when he's
- 8:22Speaker 3: on the field, but has had a very hard time
- 8:25Speaker 3: staying there in his career. Specific to the Astros, the
- 8:33Speaker 3: Mike Burrows experiment has taken a bit of a detour.
- 8:38Speaker 3: They sent him down to Triple A. They announced yesterday,
- 8:41Speaker 3: bringing back up Alimber Santa from Triple A sugar Land,
- 8:46Speaker 3: who has been very good this year. Honestly in his
- 8:50Speaker 3: bullpen work thirteen innings so far this season in a
- 8:53Speaker 3: one to three five ERA, so Santa has been pretty
- 8:55Speaker 3: solid out of the bullpen. I know that's really limited time,
- 8:59Speaker 3: but excited to see what he can do. This is
- 9:01Speaker 3: his first major league season. He's only twenty three years old.
- 9:04Speaker 3: I think he's a pretty solid bullpin arm. But this
- 9:07Speaker 3: is more about Mike Burrows and it is about Santa.
- 9:10Speaker 3: Burrows has not lived up to the hype that he
- 9:14Speaker 3: had coming into this season. He was a big addition
- 9:18Speaker 3: to this team. In the off season. Houston acquired him
- 9:22Speaker 3: in a three team trade in which we sent away
- 9:26Speaker 3: Jacob Melton and Anderson Brido. Jacob Melton was a outfield
- 9:30Speaker 3: prospect that had been highly touted for a couple of
- 9:34Speaker 3: years and didn't have a whole lot of big league
- 9:36Speaker 3: time in Houston, but did show some promise and he
- 9:39Speaker 3: was a left handed hitting outfielder, which we never have
- 9:42Speaker 3: enough of. But sent Melton and Brido to Tampa, and
- 9:48Speaker 3: Tampa sent Brandon Lowe, Mason Montgomery, and Jake Mangum to
- 9:54Speaker 3: the Pirates, and the Pirates sent us Mike Burrows. Burrows
- 9:57Speaker 3: was really solid last year in Pittsburgh, a three nine
- 10:01Speaker 3: four era. Struck out twenty four percent of the batters
- 10:04Speaker 3: he faced, so really good at missing bats. But that's
- 10:10Speaker 3: taken a bit of a downturn this year, down to
- 10:14Speaker 3: seventeen point seven percent strikeout rate, and he's had he's
- 10:19Speaker 3: been of qualified pictures. So for those of you all
- 10:22Speaker 3: who don't know how qualified pictures work, it's basically pictures
- 10:27Speaker 3: that have stayed in the starting rotation enough to be
- 10:30Speaker 3: considered like full time starters. Burrows is the only Astro
- 10:34Speaker 3: that I think hadn't missed any starts for injury reasons,
- 10:38Speaker 3: because every other picture on the roster had been out
- 10:40Speaker 3: at some point. So he had the most innings out
- 10:43Speaker 3: of everybody, but he also gave up the most runs
- 10:46Speaker 3: by far. He's had a ra just shy of six
- 10:50Speaker 3: oh yeah, five point nine to nine er oh yeah.
- 10:53Speaker 3: And then against the Nationals, I think that was on Monday,
- 10:58Speaker 3: he gave up ten runs in only four and a
- 11:01Speaker 3: third innings in a game that the Astros lost by one,
- 11:05Speaker 3: twelve to eleven. He was, you know, kind of the
- 11:08Speaker 3: backbreaker there for Houston in that road game, so it's
- 11:13Speaker 3: it'll be interesting to see. He's only twenty six, so
- 11:16Speaker 3: he still has some time to develop. But when they
- 11:19Speaker 3: when the Astros picked him up, it was seen more
- 11:22Speaker 3: of a someone who can contribute right now type of move,
- 11:27Speaker 3: not someone that needs to develop in Triple a little longer.
- 11:32Speaker 3: So he does have that he this is his last option,
- 11:37Speaker 3: his last minor league options, So if the Astros call
- 11:39Speaker 3: him up within the next twenty days, then they will
- 11:43Speaker 3: be able to retain that option and use it again
- 11:45Speaker 3: to send him down. But if he stays on the
- 11:47Speaker 3: on the Triple A the roster for more than twenty days,
- 11:49Speaker 3: then the next time he needs to be sent down,
- 11:52Speaker 3: they will have to designate him for assignment and hope
- 11:55Speaker 3: that nobody picks him up on waivers. So it's been
- 11:57Speaker 3: a very disappointing Mike Burrow's story on the Astros so far.
- 12:04Speaker 3: We'll see if you can pick it back up. Sometimes,
- 12:08Speaker 3: you know, getting sent down to Triple A and just
- 12:12Speaker 3: kind of rekindling that competitive fire is what a picture needs.
- 12:15Speaker 3: But we'll see what happens in the case of Burrows.
- 12:20Speaker 3: One more Astros headline to get to here. We talked
- 12:25Speaker 3: about the trade deadlines coming up here the very beginning
- 12:28Speaker 3: of August, so we're past the halfway point. Like Riley mentioned,
- 12:33Speaker 3: so teams really know for the most part what they are,
- 12:37Speaker 3: whether or not they're contenders this season. The Astros are
- 12:40Speaker 3: right there on the bubble of that. I would say,
- 12:43Speaker 3: I think there are only a couple games out of
- 12:45Speaker 3: a wild card spot right now. Yeah, game and a
- 12:47Speaker 3: half back of the Texas Rangers for that final wildcard spot,
- 12:51Speaker 3: so still very much in contention. If they do decide
- 12:55Speaker 3: to acquire at the trade deadline, which is what Dana
- 12:59Speaker 3: Brown and Jim Crane have been saying they're going to do,
- 13:02Speaker 3: they will most likely be looking for left handed hitting
- 13:04Speaker 3: outfielders because all of our outfielders except for Taylor Tremil
- 13:08Speaker 3: and now Lamont Wade, hit right handed and have not
- 13:12Speaker 3: hit very well at all. They've been the outfield group
- 13:16Speaker 3: this season has been one of the worst in the
- 13:17Speaker 3: majors on the offensive side of the ball, well below
- 13:22Speaker 3: league average. They've played great defense, I will give them that,
- 13:26Speaker 3: but they just sent down Jake Myers, so they have
- 13:31Speaker 3: Lamont Wade, Junior, Taylor Trammell, Cam Smith is the current
- 13:34Speaker 3: starting outfield. Zach Deznzo and Bryce Matthews the two backups.
- 13:41Speaker 3: But the thing about the Astros outfield is that most
- 13:43Speaker 3: of the year it's been players who were originally infielders
- 13:48Speaker 3: taking outfield reps. So it's been very impressive that they've
- 13:52Speaker 3: been good as good as they are defensively, but the
- 13:56Speaker 3: offense has not been not been good at all. Some
- 14:00Speaker 3: players that would be on the list for outfielders for
- 14:06Speaker 3: bats that the Astros could pick up include Large new
- 14:10Speaker 3: Bar of the Cardinals, Jake McCarthy and Mickey Moniac of
- 14:14Speaker 3: the Rockies. Those two seem the most likely as their
- 14:19Speaker 3: trade value isn't super high. They're both a little bit
- 14:22Speaker 3: older bats that have never really performed that highly, but
- 14:25Speaker 3: they've been pretty solid. Mickey Moniac in particular, has been
- 14:28Speaker 3: a guy that's shown a lot of pop. Granted, most
- 14:32Speaker 3: of that has been while he's been a Rocky, so
- 14:35Speaker 3: there's a little bit of homeful of advantage there when
- 14:37Speaker 3: you're playing your home games in Denver, But regardless, that's
- 14:41Speaker 3: definitely what they're going to be looking at. Maybe a
- 14:43Speaker 3: little bit of bullpen help, but any contender is always
- 14:45Speaker 3: looking for bullpen help, so that's not really something that
- 14:49Speaker 3: is news. It'll be interesting to see what they give
- 14:52Speaker 3: up in these trades if they try to acquire some
- 14:54Speaker 3: major league talent, because they do have one of the
- 14:56Speaker 3: worst farm systems according to the quote unquote experts. Anyway,
- 15:02Speaker 3: the Astros are always very good at developing those lower
- 15:04Speaker 3: ranked prospects into major league contributors. Xavier Nions is the
- 15:10Speaker 3: only top one hundred prospect in the Astros system right now.
- 15:14Speaker 3: He was drafted out of high school last season in
- 15:16Speaker 3: the first round, so still down in the low A.
- 15:20Speaker 3: But it'll be interesting to see what the Astros how
- 15:23Speaker 3: they go about acquiring at the deadline. And then last
- 15:29Speaker 3: topic here in our baseball segment that I want to
- 15:32Speaker 3: get at, So if you didn't see it last night,
- 15:38Speaker 3: I think it was the Brewers and the I don't
- 15:41Speaker 3: remember who they were playing, but they were up by
- 15:43Speaker 3: eight in the bottom of the ninth inning and Jackson
- 15:46Speaker 3: Cherio comes to the plate. I was the Cardinals, That's
- 15:49Speaker 3: what it was. So Jackson Cheerio comes to the plate.
- 15:51Speaker 3: He's a right handed hitter, has always hit right handed
- 15:54Speaker 3: through the miners and majors, and because they're up so
- 15:58Speaker 3: much and the Cardinals are so far behind. The Cardinals
- 16:01Speaker 3: have a position player pitching on the mound, you know,
- 16:04Speaker 3: to save the bullpen from pitching unnecessary innings. So since
- 16:09Speaker 3: there's a position player pitching and they usually just go
- 16:11Speaker 3: up there and lob the ball, Chario goes up there
- 16:14Speaker 3: and decides to bat left handed, just to see if
- 16:17Speaker 3: he could. And somebody on Twitter didn't like that. Here
- 16:25Speaker 3: was the tweet. It starts off with Boomer take alert,
- 16:29Speaker 3: but I'll own it, so at least he knows what
- 16:31Speaker 3: he is. But he says, Jackson Trio is not a
- 16:34Speaker 3: left handed hitter. He never has been yet last night
- 16:37Speaker 3: he batted left handed in the ninth. Playing MLB should
- 16:39Speaker 3: never be trivial. Many guys bust their butts for years
- 16:42Speaker 3: and never get this opportunity. This is a terrible look.
- 16:45Speaker 3: And while I understand that you don't want to make
- 16:47Speaker 3: a mockery of the game, when there's a position player
- 16:51Speaker 3: up there throwing forty mile an hour ephess, a major
- 16:55Speaker 3: League Baseball player can hit from either side of the
- 16:57Speaker 3: plate and be able to put it in play. Chario
- 16:59Speaker 3: hit a line drive to center that was caught, but
- 17:01Speaker 3: it was still hit hard, So I don't really think
- 17:03Speaker 3: he's making a mockery of the game by going up
- 17:06Speaker 3: there and hitting from the opposite side of the plate
- 17:08Speaker 3: that he normally hits from, because he's a major league
- 17:10Speaker 3: baseball player. If it's a forty mile an hour pitch,
- 17:13Speaker 3: any major league baseball player is gonna be able to
- 17:15Speaker 3: hit that. Like, I just don't understand his problem here.
- 17:21Speaker 7: Honestly, if I if I walked up and that'd be
- 17:26Speaker 7: I don't know. I feel like he was wasn't he's
- 17:28Speaker 7: doing a mockery. I think he's kind of just sounds
- 17:30Speaker 7: like he's being a smart button, you know what I mean.
- 17:32Speaker 7: He's walking up there, it's being like, oh, I'm gonna
- 17:34Speaker 7: do this just because I kind of can because of
- 17:36Speaker 7: this scenario or the situation in which when you're at
- 17:39Speaker 7: that level of play anyway, who's not gonna walk up
- 17:42Speaker 7: there and be like, oh I can do this, Like
- 17:43Speaker 7: I'm gonna do just because I can, you know.
- 17:45Speaker 3: Sure well, and if there was like an actual pitcher
- 17:48Speaker 3: up there throwing his best pitches, then I would understand it,
- 17:52Speaker 3: like that would be, you know, making a little bit
- 17:55Speaker 3: of a mockery of it. I get that, But it
- 17:57Speaker 3: was a game in which it was a top of
- 18:00Speaker 3: the ninth, the losing team was down by eight runs
- 18:04Speaker 3: and they were throwing a position player. So anytime you're
- 18:06Speaker 3: throwing a position player, I think anything that happens in
- 18:09Speaker 3: that scenario doesn't really matter. If a hitter goes up
- 18:15Speaker 3: there and just decides to take the biggest swings possible
- 18:17Speaker 3: because he wants to hit homers, he can do that.
- 18:19Speaker 3: You're throwing a position player out there, you're opening yourself
- 18:22Speaker 3: up to opening yourself up to all of these situations
- 18:26Speaker 3: like this. I don't I don't really see how this
- 18:29Speaker 3: is such a problem, but apparently some people believe that.
- 18:33Speaker 8: I think it's kind of funny, as I do.
- 18:34Speaker 3: I think it's really fun.
- 18:35Speaker 8: Person it's fun.
- 18:36Speaker 3: I think it's really funny. I think the players should
- 18:39Speaker 3: have fun when they're playing a game for a living,
- 18:42Speaker 3: but some people feel otherwise. Well, that's going to do it.
- 18:46Speaker 3: For our first segment here, we will take a quick
- 18:48Speaker 3: break and come back. We're going to talk a little
- 18:51Speaker 3: bit about the World Cup. Yes, the US men's national
- 18:53Speaker 3: team has been eliminated, but there are still a lot
- 18:55Speaker 3: of fun games going on. We will get to that
- 18:58Speaker 3: after this. Word for an insurance.
- 19:02Speaker 6: To Talk sports, but also Taylor Swift fly Fishing and

- 19:54Speaker 10: When you boil it down, most everybody has what you need.
- 19:57Speaker 10: You need a track, you need to go, weight room,
- 19:58Speaker 10: But well, the difference as the people and so that's
- 20:02Speaker 10: where the staff and all of us for people, everybody
- 20:05Speaker 10: that touches every aspect of the program needs to be
- 20:09Speaker 10: in one accord, pulling in the same or rowing in
- 20:12Speaker 10: the same direction, just trying to do everything in that
- 20:15Speaker 10: possible in their in their power to move the program forward.
- 20:20Speaker 10: The good thing is this program has had that for years,
- 20:26Speaker 10: and we just need to readjust to the changing landscape
- 20:31Speaker 10: and just be prepared for the things that will come
- 20:34Speaker 10: our way. And I think there's no place more equipped
- 20:38Speaker 10: to adapt to the changing landscape than Texas.
- 20:41Speaker 4: Enemy Tech SACS Live brought to you by David Gardner's

- 21:09Speaker 11: saying whiskey for my man, beer for my horse.
- 21:16Speaker 3: Welcome back all Willy Wednesday here on Chip Howard's Sports Talk.
- 21:19Speaker 3: This portion of our program brought to you by and
- 21:22Speaker 3: Co Insurance. It's the Zone eleven fifty AM, ninety three
- 21:25Speaker 3: points seven FM. Caleb Rapley here filling in for Chip
- 21:28Speaker 3: alongside Riley, and that was the great Toby Keith alongside
- 21:35Speaker 3: Willy beer for my horses. Just it's a It's always
- 21:38Speaker 3: a really fun song. Today also happens to be Toby
- 21:42Speaker 3: Keith's birthday. He would be sixty five today. Rest in peace. TK.
- 21:46Speaker 7: This weekend I was talking about this earlier because you know,
- 21:49Speaker 7: Fourth of July everything kind of going on. I've never
- 21:51Speaker 7: heard I love TOBKEI, so I have a problem with it.
- 21:54Speaker 7: I've never heard more Toby Keith in my life than
- 21:57Speaker 7: I did this past weekend, from Friday all the way
- 22:00Speaker 7: to Sunsure. The amount of people on the lake that
- 22:02Speaker 7: are listening to it, it was you'd have it on
- 22:04Speaker 7: your boat, and then you turn to the left, someone's
- 22:06Speaker 7: playing it over there, and then you turn the right,
- 22:08Speaker 7: someone's got a new one on and at one point
- 22:09Speaker 7: everyone's playing a different song.
- 22:11Speaker 8: At one point it was hilarious.
- 22:13Speaker 3: Toby Keith is just like the most American music. It's
- 22:16Speaker 3: it's very patriotic, it's great. It's perfect for Fourth of
- 22:19Speaker 3: July weekend, especially America. Two fifty. I listened to my
- 22:24Speaker 3: fair share as well. Personally, I think the random tangent
- 22:29Speaker 3: here Yes courtesy of the Red, White and Blue is
- 22:32Speaker 3: a great song, but made in America does not good
- 22:34Speaker 3: enough love, that's all I'm going I love. That might
- 22:37Speaker 3: be my favorite Toby Keith song. I think I'll probably
- 22:40Speaker 3: listened to that one like three or four times this weekend.
- 22:44Speaker 8: I love that.
- 22:45Speaker 3: So speaking of America, the United States men's national team
- 22:52Speaker 3: in the World Cup, you know, it's a pretty solid run.
- 22:54Speaker 8: We got to the banked.
- 22:56Speaker 3: The round of sixteen. Yeah, it was a really rough
- 22:59Speaker 3: way to end it against Belgium on Monday. Yeah, four
- 23:03Speaker 3: to one is not what you want to see, especially uh,
- 23:07Speaker 3: after all of the drama that went down with Balligan,
- 23:13Speaker 3: with the lawyers getting involved and even President Trump getting involved.
- 23:17Speaker 7: In fact, the President Trump picked up his phone and
- 23:20Speaker 7: the World's song.
- 23:21Speaker 8: That's probably the first time the US president has.
- 23:24Speaker 3: Ever done that allegedly.
- 23:26Speaker 7: Oh my gosh, this made me giggle. When we talked
- 23:28Speaker 7: about on the show. We were talking about on Monday,
- 23:29Speaker 7: it was like, only Trump would do that. Only Trump.
- 23:33Speaker 3: You know, I think you're probably right, But that was, uh,
- 23:37Speaker 3: that was all very interesting, No doubt I saw the clip.
- 23:42Speaker 3: I don't really know that. I don't think it really
- 23:44Speaker 3: warranted a red card. But and but that's not really
- 23:48Speaker 3: the point. It's just kind of a bad look to
- 23:50Speaker 3: put up this big of a stink to get a
- 23:51Speaker 3: player back on your team and then end up losing
- 23:54Speaker 3: the next game by three goals.
- 23:56Speaker 8: One hundred percent agree, one hundred percent.
- 23:58Speaker 7: I mean it was just I just remember when first started,
- 24:00Speaker 7: They're like, oh, red card, he's out for this, that.
- 24:02Speaker 12: And the other.
- 24:02Speaker 7: I'm like, well, I understand, I don't think I firmly
- 24:07Speaker 7: will stand on the hill, not just because I'm a
- 24:08Speaker 7: team USA obviously, but yeah, he should not have been
- 24:11Speaker 7: thrown out for the next game. But also I don't
- 24:14Speaker 7: know what happened to us when we went up to
- 24:16Speaker 7: Seattle to play this game, but something everything that could
- 24:19Speaker 7: have gone wrong just went wrong. Yeah, and I don't
- 24:23Speaker 7: even watch soccer, but I'm just saying you could kind
- 24:26Speaker 7: of see it, like just the body language of the players,
- 24:29Speaker 7: something about it just wasn't right.
- 24:32Speaker 3: They looked, Yeah, they didn't look fully fully locked in
- 24:36Speaker 3: Christian polistic again with just a stinker of a performance.
- 24:40Speaker 3: I've heard a lot of people say that he needs
- 24:42Speaker 3: to not be the face of the men's national team
- 24:46Speaker 3: in the next World Cup just because he has never
- 24:49Speaker 3: he hasn't really put on any good performances when we
- 24:52Speaker 3: need it. Oh, like we know that he's a talented player.
- 24:56Speaker 3: But if you don't, if you don't come up clutching
- 24:59Speaker 3: the big moments, no really cares, you know, But be
- 25:04Speaker 3: that as it may. The World Cup continues into the
- 25:07Speaker 3: quarterfinals after the round of sixteen, so four really interesting matchups,
- 25:13Speaker 3: the first of which is tomorrow at three o'clock as
- 25:17Speaker 3: France and Morocco go at it in Boston. France the
- 25:21Speaker 3: odds on favorite to win the whole thing. They are
- 25:24Speaker 3: plus one eighty to win the World Cup Final, best
- 25:28Speaker 3: odds by kind of a lot. Spain is next at
- 25:30Speaker 3: plus three seventy. Argentina and England right there next to
- 25:33Speaker 3: each other at plus four hundred and plus four seventy.
- 25:36Speaker 3: So France is definitely a big favorite in this game.
- 25:41Speaker 3: Killian Andmbappe has been probably he's either best or second
- 25:46Speaker 3: best player in this tournament. I would say, I'm not
- 25:49Speaker 3: really counting Messi because he's olds. Don't get me wrong.
- 25:53Speaker 7: When this you know how cool it'd be it for
- 25:55Speaker 7: Argentina to win the whole thing and then be like,
- 25:56Speaker 7: all right, I know it's probably not gonna happen, but
- 25:58Speaker 7: he's like, I can retire now going out. If I
- 26:01Speaker 7: was at his point in my life, like I was
- 26:03Speaker 7: with him or anybody else.
- 26:05Speaker 8: Honestly, go out on top.
- 26:07Speaker 7: If you win something huge, do not go out and
- 26:09Speaker 7: play again and have a losing season.
- 26:10Speaker 8: Be like all right, I'm done now.
- 26:12Speaker 7: I want to go out on top and be like,
- 26:14Speaker 7: all right, I won the whole thing. You can't say
- 26:17Speaker 7: anything after this point because I am the best.
- 26:20Speaker 3: Yeah, I agree. We were talking about it before the show.
- 26:24Speaker 3: My idea for this segment was kind of, yes, US
- 26:27Speaker 3: is eliminated, but for those American soccer fans that have
- 26:31Speaker 3: kind of gotten into it because of the tournament being
- 26:34Speaker 3: here here in the States, who are some teams that
- 26:38Speaker 3: we can root for now? And my first answer to
- 26:41Speaker 3: that question, and it's not just because they're playing England
- 26:45Speaker 3: on Saturday, but I really think Norway might be the
- 26:48Speaker 3: most fun team to watch, especially just with the fan
- 26:52Speaker 3: base and Earling Holland they're the face of the team there.
- 26:56Speaker 3: I think it's just lean into the whole Viking vibe
- 27:03Speaker 3: that that really does look like a lot of fun
- 27:04Speaker 3: to me. And there were there were pictures of him,
- 27:08Speaker 3: I think at like a bootstore in Dallas. Yeah, over
- 27:10Speaker 3: the past week getting all his cowboy gear On, So
- 27:15Speaker 3: that was a lot of fun. I think I think
- 27:17Speaker 3: Norway is the team that I'm gonna root for if I,
- 27:20Speaker 3: you know, happen to catch any more of these games,
- 27:22Speaker 3: it's definitely Norway. You were going with Argentina.
- 27:25Speaker 7: So these so for each like you know, we're in
- 27:27Speaker 7: the we're in the final eight. So for each of
- 27:29Speaker 7: the matches, I picked someone that I want to win.
- 27:31Speaker 7: I want France to beat Morocco because I just think
- 27:33Speaker 7: i'd be fun. I want Spain to beat Belgium because
- 27:35Speaker 7: I've a been dead and against Belgium.
- 27:37Speaker 3: Sure, Norway to beat.
- 27:38Speaker 7: England obviously, and then I want Argentina to beat Switzerland.
- 27:41Speaker 7: I just feel like those four teams would be fun
- 27:44Speaker 7: to watch. And then as they continued on, I just
- 27:46Speaker 7: feel like they'll give you the most entertainment out of
- 27:49Speaker 7: the final eight.
- 27:50Speaker 3: Yeah, I think I think that's probably true. France and
- 27:55Speaker 3: Spain are probably the two best teams on paper, and
- 27:58Speaker 3: they are going to meet in the semi finals, so
- 28:01Speaker 3: we will see one of the kind of underdogs get
- 28:05Speaker 3: to the final. I agree on Argentina, I don't. Switzerland
- 28:10Speaker 3: didn't look that great to me. No, when they played
- 28:12Speaker 3: Columbia yesterday. That game was scoreless and they had to
- 28:15Speaker 3: go to penalty kicks. Switzerland ended up winning four to
- 28:18Speaker 3: three on penalties. That game was not very fun to watch,
- 28:22Speaker 3: like the last ten minutes were pretty intense, just because
- 28:25Speaker 3: I mean it was basically sudden death if somebody scored,
- 28:27Speaker 3: but nobody did. But there were a bunch of other
- 28:31Speaker 3: good games. The Mexico England game was something that was
- 28:36Speaker 3: that was interesting about that.
- 28:38Speaker 7: Soccer was interesting. I played soccer growing up, so I
- 28:41Speaker 7: know a little bit about it. I love the sport,
- 28:44Speaker 7: but I always find it inching when you get to
- 28:45Speaker 7: this point where it's like you'll have zero zero score
- 28:48Speaker 7: because you know, the knockout point, or like when you
- 28:49Speaker 7: get to that like the sudden death part that your
- 28:52Speaker 7: point doesn't count. So I'm always like, well, this team won,
- 28:55Speaker 7: but it was zero to zero, so I'm just like
- 28:56Speaker 7: put the point on the board, like you know, is
- 28:59Speaker 7: your favorite.
- 29:01Speaker 3: The way they do their scores and the clock is
- 29:04Speaker 3: all very confusing.
- 29:07Speaker 7: That's a sport you definitely could dial back on how
- 29:09Speaker 7: long it is, sure, but it would also be nice
- 29:13Speaker 7: if we just knew how much time was left on
- 29:16Speaker 7: the clock and they didn't just at the end, they
- 29:19Speaker 7: just go, you know what, let's put in eight minutes
- 29:21Speaker 7: or nine minutes or six minutes and ten seconds, Like
- 29:26Speaker 7: where are they coming up with these numbers?
- 29:27Speaker 3: Why can't we just have a normal clock like literally
- 29:29Speaker 3: every other sport agreed, But I think my real pick
- 29:35Speaker 3: to win it is definitely France. I think they are
- 29:41Speaker 3: the best team. I think they will continue to show that.
- 29:46Speaker 3: So I didn't realize this until I just looked at it.
- 29:49Speaker 3: But Messi does have the most goals of anybody in
- 29:52Speaker 3: the tournament with eight, followed by Holland and then Bape
- 29:56Speaker 3: with seven, So you know he hasn't been I know
- 30:00Speaker 3: he's not peak linal Messi like he was for so
- 30:03Speaker 3: many years, but he is still getting it done. There's
- 30:06Speaker 3: no doubt. It would be really cool if Argentina wins it.
- 30:10Speaker 3: I'll be happy because it'll be cool to see Messi
- 30:12Speaker 3: go out on this on this big of a high,
- 30:14Speaker 3: the real goat of soccer. Sorry Ronaldo, but I'm also
- 30:17Speaker 3: not sorry.
- 30:18Speaker 7: No, he is Messy is the goat of soccer.
- 30:21Speaker 3: Yeah, it's Messy Messi. It would be really cool to
- 30:26Speaker 3: see him go out on top. I wouldn't have a
- 30:29Speaker 3: problem with Norway or France winning it. Basically, as long
- 30:33Speaker 3: as it's not England or Belgium.
- 30:36Speaker 7: As long as Belgium or England will win it, I
- 30:38Speaker 7: don't even mind England. As long as Belgium doesn't win,
- 30:40Speaker 7: I'm good.
- 30:41Speaker 3: Oh come on, we can't have England winning the World
- 30:44Speaker 3: Cup on American soil. That wouldn't That would be bad.
- 30:46Speaker 8: Never mind, England cannot make it, so the best cannot win.
- 30:50Speaker 3: Speaking of the final, they are going to have like
- 30:51Speaker 3: a super Bowl style halftime show.
- 30:54Speaker 8: No.
- 30:55Speaker 3: Just earlier this afternoon, it was announced that Justin Bieber
- 30:58Speaker 3: has been added to the lineup.
- 31:00Speaker 8: I know, I'm so excited. I love Justin Bieber.
- 31:03Speaker 3: It's a very interesting lineup. Justin Bieber now joining Madonna, Shakira,
- 31:08Speaker 3: bts burna boy perfected to perform in Yeah, There you Go.
- 31:15Speaker 3: So that's definitely a very interesting lineup of performers.
- 31:20Speaker 13: There.
- 31:20Speaker 3: It's gonna be an eleven minute halftime performance. And then
- 31:23Speaker 3: it says curated by Chris Martin from Coldplay. I don't
- 31:27Speaker 3: know what that really means, Like, I guess he picks
- 31:29Speaker 3: the songs, but that's just so random. They're like, oh,
- 31:32Speaker 3: look at all these.
- 31:33Speaker 8: You know, he like writes the majority of all those songs, right.
- 31:35Speaker 3: Yeah, but it's still just so random.
- 31:39Speaker 7: I I feel like, yes, but no, because I feel
- 31:41Speaker 7: like he's gonna be the one that matches it all
- 31:42Speaker 7: up and like sure, it's like, hey, this is how
- 31:44Speaker 7: we're gonna do this. We're gonna do it like this,
- 31:45Speaker 7: like this how I want the songs be played.
- 31:47Speaker 8: Let's do it like that.
- 31:48Speaker 3: Well, it definitely will be interesting. Uh. The quarterfinal round
- 31:53Speaker 3: gets underway tomorrow at three o'clock France versus Morocco. Friday
- 31:56Speaker 3: at two is Spain versus Belgium, and then Saturday at
- 32:00Speaker 3: Norway versus England. And wrapping up that round will be
- 32:04Speaker 3: Argentina versus Switzerland. So a lot of great actions still
- 32:07Speaker 3: to come in this World Cup tournament. And that's going
- 32:10Speaker 3: to take us to our second break of the show.
- 32:13Speaker 3: We'll be right back with more sports talk here on
- 32:15Speaker 3: the Zone eleven fifty A ninety three point seven FM.

- 35:23Speaker 3: in the show, so it's more fitting. But the night
- 35:27Speaker 3: life a a good life. But it's my life, all
- 35:33Speaker 3: Welly Wednesday here on the Zone eleven fifty ninety three
- 35:36Speaker 3: point seven FM, Caleb Rapley and Riley filling in for
- 35:41Speaker 3: Chip here on this Wednesday in July, and July is
- 35:48Speaker 3: the month that is the off season for so many sports.
- 35:51Speaker 3: We're gonna get into one of those right now, the NHL,
- 35:54Speaker 3: which is Riley's area of expertise. Yes, you're like the
- 35:57Speaker 3: lone hockey person up here, I feel that really knows
- 36:01Speaker 3: about it. Like I think there are other people that
- 36:03Speaker 3: enjoy hockey, but most people couldn't name any players like
- 36:07Speaker 3: I can name, like I feel like most of the teams.
- 36:09Speaker 3: But I definitely would be lost if you asked me
- 36:12Speaker 3: to name anybody other than Alex Ovechkin, who we're going
- 36:15Speaker 3: to talk about here in a minute.
- 36:16Speaker 7: Yeah, So before we kind of like dive into like
- 36:19Speaker 7: the trade the free agency, this just got released about
- 36:23Speaker 7: probably say, two hours ago.
- 36:24Speaker 8: Connor Bidard. I don't know if you know who that is.
- 36:26Speaker 3: He was the number one pick a couple years ago.
- 36:28Speaker 7: Right, Yeah, a beast obviously plays with the Chicago black Hawks.
- 36:31Speaker 8: This, that, and the other.
- 36:32Speaker 7: He is going to miss four months. He had surgery
- 36:36Speaker 7: a couple of days ago. He it was on his
- 36:39Speaker 7: left shoulder, is what it was announced. He will turn
- 36:42Speaker 7: twenty one on July seventeen, so he's still very young. Obviously,
- 36:46Speaker 7: he is a restricted free agent. He has been eligible
- 36:49Speaker 7: to sign a contract with Chicago through with Chicago since
- 36:53Speaker 7: July first, and they have no real updates on contract talks.
- 36:57Speaker 7: But also, I mean in the mid some all of
- 37:00Speaker 7: this injury now talk, I mean Connor. I love him,
- 37:03Speaker 7: great player, fantastic to watch. A little bit on the
- 37:06Speaker 7: smaller side, I would say, I mean obviously not small,
- 37:09Speaker 7: but a little bit on that end, just when you're
- 37:11Speaker 7: playing against these massive NHL players. But since playing in
- 37:16Speaker 7: the NHL, I don't think there's been a season he's
- 37:18Speaker 7: not been injured. You know, like his rookie year playing
- 37:21Speaker 7: New Jersey Devil's got his jaw broke, was out multiple
- 37:24Speaker 7: and then had to play with the giant cage round
- 37:26Speaker 7: of space, and then got injured last year. Now he's
- 37:29Speaker 7: injured again, Like we're gonna miss the whole start of
- 37:31Speaker 7: the season in Chicago already falls at the bottom of
- 37:34Speaker 7: the bracket in the standings, so it's a little bit
- 37:38Speaker 7: it's a little bit worrisomeone too. It does not help
- 37:42Speaker 7: at all in favor for Chicago because when you start
- 37:46Speaker 7: off behind, it's really hard to catch up, especially when
- 37:48Speaker 7: teams start really get rolling, because the first part of
- 37:51Speaker 7: the season for the NHL, it's one of those things
- 37:53Speaker 7: of you got to establish the new team you've got,
- 37:56Speaker 7: you've got to figure out how everything works in Unison.
- 37:58Speaker 7: And then by the time so we're in July, August, September, October, November,
- 38:03Speaker 7: he's go. It started in November when we're almost gonna
- 38:06Speaker 7: be we're gonna be through the majority of the first
- 38:09Speaker 7: half of the season, and then by the time you
- 38:11Speaker 7: get through Christmas break where they have their stuff back
- 38:14Speaker 7: and forth, when you get into January, it's a guns
- 38:18Speaker 7: of blaze and you cannot not be on twenty four
- 38:21Speaker 7: to seven because you can get made, made or broken
- 38:24Speaker 7: immediately in that part of the season. So pretty disappointing
- 38:27Speaker 7: to see Connor out again. The Chicago posted this morning.
- 38:32Speaker 7: Connor Bedard underwent successful surgery to repair his left shoulder.
- 38:37Speaker 7: Not sure, could have happened in the off season. I'm
- 38:39Speaker 7: not gonna lie. He's been practicing a lot here recently,
- 38:42Speaker 7: so this injury probably happened in off season or is
- 38:45Speaker 7: just underlying And while he was in the midst of
- 38:48Speaker 7: doing all of his preseason training, it just decided to
- 38:50Speaker 7: like flare up a little bit.
- 38:52Speaker 3: And says it happened on Thursday when he's practicing in Vancouver.
- 38:56Speaker 8: Well, okay, Well then in Vancouver that.
- 38:58Speaker 3: I don't know if he was just practicing saying, I
- 39:00Speaker 3: guess on his own because he's not technically under contract.
- 39:03Speaker 7: No, so he technically has been training. Oh my god,
- 39:06Speaker 7: who has he been training up in Vancouver with.
- 39:07Speaker 8: There's a whole group of them up there.
- 39:08Speaker 3: Okay, so he's been.
- 39:10Speaker 8: He's so, like HIL's a little bit different than most teams.
- 39:13Speaker 7: You will train with other team members, like for instance,
- 39:16Speaker 7: the most classes like that are like our twenty nineteen class,
- 39:21Speaker 7: or like the twenty twenty three, like your draft classes
- 39:24Speaker 7: will practice together and or inor family friends or have
- 39:27Speaker 7: older siblings in it. You'll practice as groups. For like instance,
- 39:31Speaker 7: the Hughes family. They practice in Michigan at the USA
- 39:34Speaker 7: facility and then like, but artist team Canada.
- 39:39Speaker 8: Right, so there's no telling. They'll practice different places.
- 39:41Speaker 7: But him getting hurt in the off season is not
- 39:45Speaker 7: a really good look.
- 39:46Speaker 3: Yeah, that's always really unfortunate when that happens, and in
- 39:49Speaker 3: any sport getting hurt in the off season is just
- 39:52Speaker 3: even if it was actually training, there's gonna be plenty
- 39:54Speaker 3: of speculation over was he doing something stupid in training,
- 39:58Speaker 3: was it actually outside of training? And then he just
- 40:01Speaker 3: blamed it on that, Like I'm trying to remember the story.
- 40:05Speaker 3: There was a baseball player a while back that got
- 40:08Speaker 3: hurt while he was chasing Ferrell Hogs around on his ranch.
- 40:12Speaker 8: All ready for this.
- 40:12Speaker 7: Jack Hughes, the star of the New Jersey Devils, was
- 40:15Speaker 7: at a dinner for away game, cut his hand open
- 40:19Speaker 7: with a knife, cutting his steak and was out for
- 40:21Speaker 7: six weeks because they had to stitch his hand to.
- 40:23Speaker 3: Cook's so embarrassing too.
- 40:25Speaker 8: Yeah when they did.
- 40:26Speaker 7: When the report came out Jack Hughes injured at dinner,
- 40:29Speaker 7: like everyone thought that he's gonna fight.
- 40:30Speaker 8: And come to find out he had open good night.
- 40:33Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, he got in a fight with himself and lost.
- 40:36Speaker 8: Yeah, so it's a little bit wild.
- 40:38Speaker 7: But yeah, that's kind of just to start us off
- 40:40Speaker 7: that bit ard under what surgery today is.
- 40:42Speaker 8: What I believe they said.
- 40:43Speaker 7: So yeah, we'll see how I'll keep you all updated
- 40:46Speaker 7: as this off season and then the season starts.
- 40:49Speaker 3: Pretty insane that he's about to turn twenty one and
- 40:52Speaker 3: we'll go be going into his fourth NHL Season's that's
- 40:58Speaker 3: just insane. Like you don't really see that in a
- 41:00Speaker 3: whole lot of other professional sports other than I guess soccer,
- 41:05Speaker 3: but baseball, football, basketball, you're usually at least nineteen or
- 41:09Speaker 3: twenty before you even have your rookie season, and he's
- 41:13Speaker 3: about to be twenty one and going into his fourth year,
- 41:15Speaker 3: so pretty wild.
- 41:17Speaker 7: Yeah, your number one overall picks for the NHL typically
- 41:20Speaker 7: get thrown into the NHL immediately that season, so like
- 41:23Speaker 7: you're eligible to enter into the NHL if you turn
- 41:27Speaker 7: eighteen within that year or if you're eighteen, so like
- 41:31Speaker 7: I think Connor was seventeen when the draft happened, and
- 41:33Speaker 7: then obviously like July seventeenth when he turned eighteen that year,
- 41:36Speaker 7: so you got to be in that class. But he's
- 41:38Speaker 7: a young in like they're all so young when they start.
- 41:41Speaker 7: It's kind of wild.
- 41:43Speaker 3: Yeah, so the Stars have been making a lot of moves.
- 41:47Speaker 3: Who were any players you're excited about?
- 41:50Speaker 7: So I keep up with the Stars, eh, a little bit,
- 41:54Speaker 7: not as much as I do other teams. I am
- 41:56Speaker 7: a Stars fan, but I am pretty excited that you've
- 42:00Speaker 7: got Jamie Benn. He has been with the Stars for
- 42:04Speaker 7: eighteen seasons. He's only ever played with the Stars. He
- 42:07Speaker 7: has decided to sign, and this was announced last Friday.
- 42:11Speaker 7: It was two weeks before his thirty seventh birthday. He
- 42:14Speaker 7: signed a one year deal for the twenty twenty six
- 42:16Speaker 7: twenty twenty seven season. He'll have a contract base of
- 42:19Speaker 7: eight hundred and fifty thousand, the league minimum, but with
- 42:22Speaker 7: potential bonuses that's in the million. So obviously, I mean
- 42:24Speaker 7: he's not not not faring well. Yeah, he obviously will
- 42:30Speaker 7: stay captain. His leadership commitment to the organization is truly unmatched.
- 42:34Speaker 7: That's kind of just what the general manager is saying.
- 42:36Speaker 7: And everyone's very excited that he and his family decided
- 42:39Speaker 7: to stay another year at the Stars. Because when you
- 42:43Speaker 7: have your veteran players that choose to stay and or
- 42:46Speaker 7: kind of like help establish with everything, it helps the
- 42:50Speaker 7: leadership overall. But also when you have your young players
- 42:52Speaker 7: that just join in. It kind of gives him that
- 42:55Speaker 7: one person above them to kind of set a foundation,
- 42:57Speaker 7: like a right this, how we're gonna run this organization,
- 42:59Speaker 7: how we're gonna play on the I like, right good overall,
- 43:02Speaker 7: just leadership. So very excited to see Jamie Benn returning
- 43:05Speaker 7: to the Ice. I truly didn't know. He's kind of
- 43:07Speaker 7: one of those players that was up in the air,
- 43:10Speaker 7: just like Alex Ovechkin, which there have been rumors going
- 43:14Speaker 7: on for months now that they didn't know if Alex
- 43:19Speaker 7: Betchkin was going to decide to come back, and the
- 43:21Speaker 7: Capitals kept it a secret. After the season ended. This
- 43:24Speaker 7: past season ended, him and his wife were like sat
- 43:26Speaker 7: down and she goes, we need to decide if you're
- 43:29Speaker 7: gonna continue to play if you're not going to and
- 43:31Speaker 7: Alex and Nan really he's very family oriented, sure, and
- 43:35Speaker 7: so he's like, after speaking with the wife, I will
- 43:39Speaker 7: be returning for maybe for the war this year, and
- 43:41Speaker 7: maybe a year after, maybe two more years. You never know,
- 43:44Speaker 7: we'll see it depends on how this season goes.
- 43:47Speaker 3: But so basically he said, I convinced her to let
- 43:50Speaker 3: me play at least one more year.
- 43:51Speaker 8: Yes, exactly.
- 43:53Speaker 7: And so he turns forty one in September, so I
- 43:56Speaker 7: mean he's been playing for a minute.
- 43:58Speaker 8: Yeah, but I love Alex Vechkin. I'm not gonna lie
- 44:01Speaker 8: to you.
- 44:01Speaker 7: When I found out he decided to make one more year,
- 44:04Speaker 7: I'm so happy because I didn't. I've not got to
- 44:06Speaker 7: see him, plain person. Yeah, that's one person that I'm
- 44:08Speaker 7: going to make the trip to Dallas just to see it.
- 44:11Speaker 7: Because who doesn't want to watch a legend play on ice.
- 44:14Speaker 3: It's like Chris.
- 44:14Speaker 7: Sidney Crosby too, Like you want to watch those two
- 44:16Speaker 7: before they decide to leave, Which, yeah, I don't think
- 44:18Speaker 7: Crosby's ever.
- 44:19Speaker 3: Gonna but Ovechkin is definitely one of the last of
- 44:23Speaker 3: that generation that's still playing. Yes, I do need to.
- 44:26Speaker 3: I do need to make it up to Dallas to
- 44:28Speaker 3: see one of those games. All right, Well, it's time
- 44:32Speaker 3: for the Astros Report. That's gonna do it for our

- 48:32Speaker 3: Welcome back to sports talk here on the Zone eleven
- 48:34Speaker 3: fifty AM ninety three point seven FM. Caleb and Riley
- 48:38Speaker 3: filling in for Chip here on a all Willie Wednesday.
- 48:42Speaker 3: We mentioned earlier Big twelve media days just wrapped up
- 48:44Speaker 3: earlier this afternoon yesterday. One of the coaches that spoke
- 48:49Speaker 3: was Willie Fritz from the University of Houston. Starting quarterback
- 48:53Speaker 3: for the Cougars this year, as it was last year,
- 48:55Speaker 3: is going to be former Texas A and M quarterback
- 48:58Speaker 3: Connor Wigman. So let's hear what coach Fritz had to
- 49:01Speaker 3: say yesterday.
- 49:02Speaker 12: Excited about being here.
- 49:03Speaker 20: What a great venue our I think our commissioner has
- 49:06Speaker 20: done a fantastic job having the event here with the Cowboys.
- 49:12Speaker 20: And my first media day was in nineteen ninety three
- 49:16Speaker 20: at Navaro Community College cafeteria, So this is a few
- 49:21Speaker 20: more people I had back in ninety three.
- 49:23Speaker 12: So with that, I'll go ahead and open it up
- 49:25Speaker 12: for questions, and.
- 49:27Speaker 21: If you have a question, please raise your hand and
- 49:30Speaker 21: keep it held up until we can get someone to you.
- 49:36Speaker 21: We'll go to left center.
- 49:37Speaker 12: First round.
- 49:39Speaker 1: Chris Baldwin, Paper City, Houston.
- 49:41Speaker 22: Hey, Willie, you've been open about talking about, you know,
- 49:45Speaker 22: international championship at uson eventually. How important do you think
- 49:50Speaker 22: that is to verbalize for your fans and your program?
- 49:54Speaker 22: And how about you talk to your team about goals?
- 49:58Speaker 20: You know, we don't talk about you a whole lot
- 50:00Speaker 20: as far as season goals are concerned. We talked about
- 50:03Speaker 20: doing the very best we can day after day after
- 50:05Speaker 20: day after day. But you know, we've certainly got the location,
- 50:09Speaker 20: We've got the university, we've got the facilities. There's no
- 50:12Speaker 20: reason why we can't do that at the University of Houston.
- 50:15Speaker 20: You know, a good template for us. He's been coach
- 50:17Speaker 20: Sampson and what he's done with men's basketball, and I
- 50:20Speaker 20: think every program at the University of Houston, you know,
- 50:24Speaker 20: aspires to be national champions and we certainly do.
- 50:26Speaker 23: In Football Center right there road, Hey, coach Jared Ramirez
- 50:31Speaker 23: with Red at or Sports dot com. Willie, you had
- 50:35Speaker 23: three games on Fridays last year. You've got to this
- 50:39Speaker 23: year with the conference offener against Texas Tech.
- 50:43Speaker 3: Do you get used to those games.
- 50:45Speaker 23: That are not on Saturdays, or do you just kind
- 50:47Speaker 23: of kind of roll with it as as the season
- 50:49Speaker 23: goes off.
- 50:50Speaker 20: Well, I think you just have to have a plan
- 50:52Speaker 20: for either, you know, playing with one less day of preparation.
- 50:57Speaker 20: And luckily it's not the first or Saturday this second
- 51:00Speaker 20: game that you know, it would be a little bit unique,
- 51:02Speaker 20: but uh, you just kind of have a plan for,
- 51:05Speaker 20: you know, preparing one last day. And I've been doing
- 51:08Speaker 20: this long enough before. I've been you know, quite a
- 51:10Speaker 20: few Thursday games, Friday games, and obviously a ton of
- 51:13Speaker 20: Saturday games. But there's a different way of preparation when
- 51:16Speaker 20: it's a Saturday morning game versus a Saturday night game.
- 51:20Speaker 12: So we have a plan that we follow at University
- 51:23Speaker 12: of Houston.
- 51:25Speaker 21: Okay, we go far left side for front Brice Cherry, Waito,
- 51:29Speaker 21: Trip Willie.
- 51:30Speaker 12: Good to see you probably make that love caf Terry,
- 51:36Speaker 12: weren't you? Yeah, no doubt.
- 51:38Speaker 24: Uh you gave the Bell brothers a promotion, both of
- 51:43Speaker 24: them this past offseason. What have you seen in those
- 51:47Speaker 24: coaches development? And uh, you know just what I know
- 51:51Speaker 24: you have my Historyherry with Brian, Like, are those guys
- 51:55Speaker 24: on the rise in terms of their coaching development.
- 51:59Speaker 20: Well, they do a fantastic job. He's talking about Sean Bell,
- 52:03Speaker 20: our assistant head coach, quarterback coach, passing game coordinator, Brian Bell,
- 52:08Speaker 20: who's our wide receiver coach. And Brian was my starting
- 52:11Speaker 20: quarterback in Sam Easton State for four years. I've known
- 52:15Speaker 20: the family forever and you know, they do a super
- 52:18Speaker 20: job recruiting.
- 52:19Speaker 12: They're very good coaches. I think they're tremendous.
- 52:22Speaker 20: Role models mentors to our student athletes, and that's what
- 52:25Speaker 20: you look forward with all your coaches.
- 52:28Speaker 12: I'm very fortunate to have those two guys.
- 52:31Speaker 25: Again, poor love side him. Mikaela Booker witte Hi coach Willie.
- 52:39Speaker 25: With a roster movement being a reality every year, can
- 52:43Speaker 25: you tell me how you develop bringing in experience chance
- 52:48Speaker 25: first while also the new high schools.
- 52:53Speaker 12: Well, you got to do both, no question about it.
- 52:55Speaker 20: And that's one of the areas I'm excited about this
- 52:57Speaker 20: season is we're gonna have a little bit more depth
- 53:00Speaker 20: because we've got some of these high school guys who
- 53:02Speaker 20: are going to be playing for us this upcoming year.
- 53:05Speaker 20: Maybe we're red shirted, I guess that's the thing of
- 53:07Speaker 20: the past, but we'll you know, have these high school
- 53:11Speaker 20: guys that are playing for us, and then also the
- 53:12Speaker 20: portal guys. When you bring a guy in, We've got
- 53:15Speaker 20: a few of them back there in the back. You
- 53:17Speaker 20: want to find guys that are going to fit your program.
- 53:20Speaker 20: You know, you got to be a great recruiter. You
- 53:22Speaker 20: have to be a talent evaluator, and you got to
- 53:25Speaker 20: be an information gatherer. You got to find guys that
- 53:28Speaker 20: fit the way you do things. And I see three
- 53:30Speaker 20: guys standing back there. Mackenzie Agnello. You know, he's a
- 53:34Speaker 20: guy that fit in perfectly. He's a Texas kid, wanted
- 53:37Speaker 20: to stay in the state of Texas. You know, Kin
- 53:40Speaker 20: Treill Webb, he's a guy that played for me over
- 53:42Speaker 20: at TU Lane. He's from Houston, wanted to get closer
- 53:45Speaker 20: to home. And then Jordan Allen back over there was
- 53:49Speaker 20: at LSU and wanted to transfer to a place close
- 53:52Speaker 20: to home where he could have an immediate success.
- 53:55Speaker 12: And all those guys have had that. So you got
- 53:58Speaker 12: to make.
- 53:58Speaker 20: Sure you find guys fit in your culture. And I
- 54:01Speaker 20: think we've done a fantastic job of that as coaches.
- 54:04Speaker 20: Utilizing the poor law advantage.
- 54:07Speaker 21: And if you have a question, please keep your hand raised.
- 54:09Speaker 21: So we can get someone to you who are a
- 54:11Speaker 21: left center here.
- 54:13Speaker 26: Hey, coach Geordia Edmnson's Coast Committee. And the question I
- 54:17Speaker 26: have for you is you've been a part of a
- 54:20Speaker 26: lot of program rebuildings. So what are the things that
- 54:25Speaker 26: tell you things are going on in the right direct
- 54:26Speaker 26: ruction before they show up in the win loss record.
- 54:31Speaker 12: Well, I think it's a culture that you have.
- 54:33Speaker 20: You know, one of the proudest a few seasons I
- 54:35Speaker 20: had is when I was at Too Lane and we
- 54:37Speaker 20: we got you know, we had to leave New Orleans
- 54:40Speaker 20: and went to Birmingham for thirty nights and you know,
- 54:45Speaker 20: we didn't have a great record that year, but I
- 54:47Speaker 20: had zero problems. And I think that's indicative of the
- 54:51Speaker 20: culture that you have. And uh, you know, it's something
- 54:54Speaker 20: that's hard to put your thumb on all the time.
- 54:57Speaker 20: You know, when you got it, and everybody's striving to
- 55:00Speaker 20: have it. But if you've got good coaches and good
- 55:03Speaker 20: players and great culture.
- 55:04Speaker 12: You're gonna have a fantastic team. So we're just around
- 55:08Speaker 12: our guys all the time.
- 55:09Speaker 20: As a head coach, I'm around our guys, you know,
- 55:13Speaker 20: almost on a daily basis.
- 55:14Speaker 12: And my assistant coaches are as well, and you know,
- 55:17Speaker 12: we just try to bring in the right guys. That's
- 55:20Speaker 12: so important.
- 55:21Speaker 20: I worked too hard to be around a guy who
- 55:24Speaker 20: doesn't know how to act, and it's hard for me
- 55:26Speaker 20: to change someone who's had a pad eighteen years. So
- 55:30Speaker 20: trying to find those guys who had a real good
- 55:32Speaker 20: eighteen years and we'll shine and polish them and help
- 55:35Speaker 20: them through that transition from eighteen to twenty two years
- 55:38Speaker 20: of age.
- 55:40Speaker 6: Far less side in the back.
- 55:44Speaker 3: Hey, Willie Kelly stropping that here from the witch Ta Eagle.
- 55:47Speaker 12: I was curious if you could tell.
- 55:48Speaker 21: Us a little bit what made you want to bring
- 55:51Speaker 21: Michael Bishop on as an assistant coach, and now that
- 55:53Speaker 21: you've been.
- 55:54Speaker 12: Working with them for a little bit, what is he
- 55:56Speaker 12: like as a coach? Well, he does an excellent job,
- 55:58Speaker 12: you know.
- 55:59Speaker 20: Michael play warming to Blynn Junior College in nineteen ninety
- 56:02Speaker 20: five and ninety six, and you know, I've been close
- 56:06Speaker 20: to him ever since.
- 56:06Speaker 12: I don't I don't think a month ever went by
- 56:08Speaker 12: where he and I didn't talk at least one time.
- 56:11Speaker 20: And you know, and he's always visited me at all
- 56:14Speaker 20: the different places that I've been at over the years,
- 56:19Speaker 20: you know, and he just is a he's.
- 56:21Speaker 12: A great person, great role model, mentor.
- 56:23Speaker 20: But you know, he's also a real smart football coach,
- 56:26Speaker 20: and you know, we're just fortunate to have him around.
- 56:29Speaker 20: He's a you know, it's also good to have somebody
- 56:32Speaker 20: that you know, you can really trust. You know, I've
- 56:36Speaker 20: known him forever and he understands how I do things,
- 56:39Speaker 20: and he's always got my back.
- 56:42Speaker 21: Time for one final question center right for from hey
- 56:46Speaker 21: coach cal Phillips the four Star Telegram. You guys got
- 56:50Speaker 21: one of the top rated quarterback recruits this past season.
- 56:54Speaker 16: Is there war?
- 56:55Speaker 12: Was there any commerce asercation of who is going.
- 56:58Speaker 21: To start Week one? Or are you guys gonna run
- 57:01Speaker 21: a two quarterback a system that owl?
- 57:04Speaker 20: No, Connor's a cool our starting quarterback without question. What's
- 57:07Speaker 20: been really neat is I've never had two five star
- 57:11Speaker 20: quarterbacks before, you know, any place I've ever been, I've
- 57:14Speaker 20: never had one. Much less to those guys are both
- 57:17Speaker 20: so unselfish. Everybody keeps asking me what what kind of
- 57:20Speaker 20: package you're gonna run with Keishawn. We're gonna run our
- 57:24Speaker 20: total package with him. He's he's really smart. Uh can
- 57:28Speaker 20: throw and run the ball. You know, so those guys
- 57:32Speaker 20: really really work well together in the quarterback room, and
- 57:35Speaker 20: I think it's a perfect situation for Keishawn to be
- 57:38Speaker 20: in there and learn from not only great coaches, but
- 57:43Speaker 20: you know, a fellow great player in Connor.
- 57:46Speaker 12: Coach. Thank you for your time today and good luck
- 57:48Speaker 12: this season. Thank you go Koog's all right.
- 57:51Speaker 3: That was Willie Fritz, the head coach of the University
- 57:54Speaker 3: of Houston Big Twelve Media Days yesterday. He spoke all
- 57:59Speaker 3: of the coach which is in each for each Big
- 58:02Speaker 3: twelve team, had a chance to go up there and
- 58:05Speaker 3: answer questions from the media. When we come back in
- 58:09Speaker 3: the five o'clock hour, the first segment, we will listen
- 58:12Speaker 3: into what Baylor head coach David Randa had to say,
- 58:16Speaker 3: and we'll talk about some of the other news surrounding
- 58:18Speaker 3: the Big Twelve. This is Chip Howard Sports Talk Caleb
- 58:21Speaker 3: and Riley filling in today.
