- 0:04It's the third hour of the Morning Show with Preston Scott, Monday, October
- 0:08the sixteenth. Good to be with you this Morning Show, fivey twenty eight.
- 0:12That's Grant Allen. I'm Preston Scott and this is the managing editor of
- 0:17war chant dot Com, Iras chafelle Ira. How in the world are you.
- 0:22I'm great, Preston, How are you? I'm doing terrific. It
- 0:25was fun being at the game. Florida State wins. What was Mike Norvel's
- 0:32feeling after that game? He was very upbeat about that game, you know
- 0:39he I think he was. He felt like this was the most complete game
- 0:43they've played. He was really excited about the defense, the fact that the
- 0:46defense held Syracuse to three points. They really only had two drives where they
- 0:52even threatened to score and they missed a field goal, and the other one
- 0:55they had one where they an interception at the very end of the game against
- 0:58the backups. But really, I think he thought it was a very complete
- 1:00game, even though they weren't efficient in the second quarter where they had a
- 1:03couple of stops on the fourth downs. He blamed himself for those. He
- 1:07thought they were either poor decisions or poor play calls, and so yeah,
- 1:11I think he came out of that game feeling like that was maybe the best
- 1:15game they played all around all season. Correct me if I'm wrong. Didn't
- 1:19this quarterback give us fits running and throwing before? Yeah, I think two
- 1:25years ago he did. Last year they dominated them, But yeah, two
- 1:29years ago he did. And it's kind of been a weird career for him.
- 1:32Grett Trader, he transferred from Misissippi State to Syracuston. Early on,
- 1:36he had a lot of success, but for whatever reason, I think they've
- 1:38had some injuries at receiver and maybe on the line, so he doesn't have
- 1:42as much talent around him. But the last few weeks he has not played
- 1:47real well and he certainly couldn't do anything on Saturday. It would be fair,
- 1:52I think, to say that we have yet to see the best of
- 1:55the Florida State offense. Why do you think that is? You know,
- 2:00I think if you look at the circumstances, you know, it's just been
- 2:04kind of a weird season. You know, they they obviously you had,
- 2:07you know, some really good opponents early in the year. That Clemson defense,
- 2:09I still think is one of the best in the country. And then
- 2:13you had the injuries on the offensive line where Robert Scott was out and where
- 2:15he Smith was out, and then you got other experienced guys playing, but
- 2:20they're new to Florida State. And then you know, I think you've had
- 2:23a couple issues with you know, just working you know, the running game,
- 2:28getting the running game going. I think they've had a hard time with
- 2:30that. This is not the same offensive line as a year ago. You
- 2:34know. I think we all when they went out and got three veteran transfers,
- 2:38three guys who played a ton of college football, we figured, Okay,
- 2:40well, they'll just replace Dylan Gibbons and they'll just come in and and
- 2:44and they'll be, you know, exactly what you had a year ago.
- 2:46And also the jazzon turning time was another veteran starter they had last year,
- 2:52and we thought they wouldn't miss a beat. Well, that hasn't been the
- 2:54case. And so I think they're starting to figure out the running game.
- 2:58I think they've had to take a different approach with it. And I think
- 3:00in the second half, I think we're going to see this offense really start
- 3:04to click. You know, I think some of us that watched the best
- 3:08of the Bowden years have this expectation that might be pretty unrealistic of just beating
- 3:15teams down every single week, And I don't know is that possible in this
- 3:22day and age. For the most part, I don't think it is.
- 3:27Yeah, you might have a rare team, you know, the twenty thirteen
- 3:29team obviously had that ability, but it's pretty rare if you look across college
- 3:34football. I mean, Georgia, you know, is in a fight for
- 3:36a while against Vanderbilt. You know, they had a game earlier this year
- 3:39where they were trailing late. You know, I just think it's it's the
- 3:43talent is so spread out. I mean back then in the nineties, and
- 3:46you know, that's when so many of us just loved the way the state
- 3:50of Florida played football. Florida State, Florida, and Miami. All of
- 3:53the talented kids in the state wanted to play at those three schools. You
- 3:57know, if they went to a team outside of the area, you didn't
- 4:00They didn't know if they'd be on TV or not. Well, now everybody's
- 4:02on TV, everybody's got an il money, everybody's got good facilities, and
- 4:06I just think the players are going there. It's all spread out. Now,
- 4:11So I just think the parody is, uh, it's too tough to
- 4:14to dominate every week. But I think this, you know, this team,
- 4:17the way that they these last couple of weeks, they're starting to show
- 4:20they have that ability. Well. I bring that up because I feel like
- 4:24for coach Norville and the staff, this still shakes out as best case scenario.
- 4:30You're winning games, but you're still not really clicking on all cylinders,
- 4:34so there's plenty to coach up heading into Duke Oh. I agree completely,
- 4:41and I think that that's you know, I also liked after each of these
- 4:44last two games, I've really liked what we've heard from FSU's players that they
- 4:47feel that way. You know. It's not like they've you know, there
- 4:49have been times even the last few years where Florida State has you know,
- 4:54won a game and looked good and the players kind of were maybe boastful or
- 4:58felt good about themselves after the game. You're not seeing that. I thought.
- 5:00If you watch the interviews after this past game, Lawrence to Philly,
- 5:03Josh Farmer, even Keon Coleman, who had a huge game, they all
- 5:08came off as very humble and very hungry. They think they can be a
- 5:11lot better than they've been so far. Another few minutes with Iraschaffelli's covered Florida
- 5:18State football for years and is kind enough to make time for US weekly during
- 5:23the season and now and then in the offseason. Ira. Before we get
- 5:27to Duke, the ninety three team was honored. Leroy Butler was honored,
- 5:30which of course was fun for me as a Green Bay Packer fan and the
- 5:33inventor of the Lambeau Leap. But it seems like Mike Norvel has found that
- 5:40that magic of embracing, learning about and making the former players feel welcome,
- 5:46and they seem to be responding in kind. Yeah, they've done a really
- 5:50good job with that. And you know, look, you know, I
- 5:54don't want to say that Florida State has never done that or hasn't done it
- 5:58in a while. Jimbo Fisher, there was a stre where I thought he
- 6:00was pretty good about it, but then it seemed to kind of fall off.
- 6:02Ye will Willy Taggert tried to do it, but then once the players
- 6:06saw the product on the field, they didn't really want to come back visit
- 6:10very much anymore. But now, no, I do think it's it's in
- 6:13a good place and they've they've done a good job. I know that their
- 6:15staff has a mailing list and they're emailing and they're constantly trying to reach out
- 6:20to those more players and create opportunities like this to get those guys back.
- 6:25And you know, they're they're they're welcome to practices and games, and it's
- 6:29important and I think it's important to the current players. Again, it was
- 6:32cool to hear Lawrence tow feeling some of these players talk about what it was
- 6:36like being around those guys from the ninety three team, and one of the
- 6:39things that really impressed them was how close those guys are still together and the
- 6:43memories they have. And I think the current players want to be able to
- 6:46have those kinds of memories to look up look back on as well. So,
- 6:49yeah, it's it's one of the cool things I think about the sports
- 6:53in general. But right now, this team Douke comes to town. For
- 6:57those that don't necessarily watch a bunch of football, what should they know about
- 7:01Duke? How are they winning games? Man, They've got an excellent defense.
- 7:06Mike Elko is their defense, is their head coach, and he's a
- 7:09defensive coordinator by trade. He's been at some of the top programs in the
- 7:13country. Really one of the best defensive coaches in football, and he went
- 7:16out and went heavy in the transfer portal. This is not your typical duke
- 7:20football team. I mean, they got kids from Miami and other schools that
- 7:24are transferred in and they've got a really good defense. I think they've only
- 7:27given up fourteen points more than once more than fourteen points one time all season.
- 7:31I think they've given up like fifty nine or sixty points in five to
- 7:35six games, So they're outstanding. I think for of their games they've held
- 7:40opponents to a touchdown or west, so they're legit on defense. The big
- 7:44question on offense Riley Leonards, their quarterback, is dynamic. He's a guy
- 7:47that can throw, but he's also a very good runner, extremely athletic.
- 7:51He's sprained his ankle a couple of weeks ago against Notre Dame, and that's
- 7:55going to be the big question this week is whether or not he's going to
- 7:58play or not. He did not play Saturday State, but againstinc He State,
- 8:01but they still won that game twenty four to three. They didn't ask
- 8:05the offense to do a whole lot of defense, create a lot of opportunities,
- 8:09but that's gonna be the big The high profile matchup is going to be
- 8:11Florida State's offense against Duke's defense. And then the other question is whether or
- 8:16not Riley Leonard that plays. If he doesn't, I think Duke's offense is
- 8:18gonna have a tough time against that issues defense. Any rumor of a white
- 8:22out, this is the perfect game for it. Yeah, I'm with you,
- 8:31man, if they do it, I just hope they do it and
- 8:33announce it and everybody knows it, because it seems like that's always the big
- 8:37issue in Florida State is when they do try to do something like that,
- 8:41you don't see one hundred percent participation like you do at Penn State or somewhere
- 8:45like that. Let me look ahead to the Duke game and you mentioned the
- 8:48offense versus Duke's defense, and do that by looking back at the Syracuse game
- 8:52for just another moment, it seemed as though we finally struggled inside the red
- 8:58zone. Was it play calling, play play execution or did Syracuse figure out
- 9:03something. I think it was more I leaned towards play calling an execution.
- 9:11I don't think it was Syracuse's defense is decent, but it felt like to
- 9:16me, I did not like either of the fourth down calls personally. You
- 9:20know, first of all, the one time I would have taken the field
- 9:22goal, the fourth and goal from the four, I think Mike Norvell just
- 9:26he felt it looked like to me, he felt like Syracuse had no chance
- 9:30of going ninety six yards, so let's go ahead and get the touchdown.
- 9:33But the problem is, you know, now you don't score on the next
- 9:35one, and now it feels like you're stalling on these drives, and so
- 9:39the next drive they end up going on fourth and one. I didn't love
- 9:43that play call. You go chaheen Bell in the Wildcat, and that's one
- 9:46of those plays where you only have one option to score. With Jordan Travis
- 9:50his ability to run and throw, I feel like you're much better off with
- 9:52the ball in Jordan Travis's hands in those situations. So it sounded like Mike
- 9:56Norvell was kicking himself a little bit for that play call. Well, I
- 10:01always appreciate your time, and we'll talk again next week. Thank you,
- 10:03sir, same he here present. Take care, Iraschaefell war Chant dot com.
- 10:09Subscribe you'll love it. Seventeen minutes past the hour,
