- 0:15Speaker 1: Saving Serial Data and Serial Sisters.
- 0:18Speaker 3: You'll be addicted and addicted.
- 0:20Speaker 2: Fast to the number one tabloid real life podcast. Listen in,
- 0:24Speaker 2: listen up.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Woo, woo. Heather MacDonald.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Juicy Scoop.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Hello and welcome to Juicy Scoop. I have a fellow
- 0:34Speaker 1: podcaster here, first time on Juicy Scoop, Jessica Rothschild. We
- 0:40Speaker 1: have talked, we had a long conversation a while ago
- 0:43Speaker 1: on the phone, and then you told me about your
- 0:45Speaker 1: new podcast that was coming out, which is like a series,
- 0:49Speaker 1: a specific series, like a docu-series, right? It's a docu-series, yeah.
- 0:54Speaker 1: And you're like, I think this is right up your alley.
- 0:56Speaker 1: I'm like, yeah, it is. It is... The secrets behind
- 1:00Speaker 1: the soul cycling, everything we, all those weird things that
- 1:05Speaker 1: we'd hear of strange stuff going on. The podcast is
- 1:09Speaker 1: called Cult of Body and Soul.
- 1:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:12Speaker 1: So I want to just, let's just start. Yeah, let's go.
- 1:16Speaker 1: So just give me a little background on you and
- 1:18Speaker 1: all the different things you do and then how– and
- 1:21Speaker 1: obviously you're very fit. You have a tiny little worked
- 1:24Speaker 1: out body.
- 1:24Speaker 2: I mean you did grope me as I was coming up.
- 1:26Speaker 1: I was like, oh, I can see.
- 1:28Speaker 2: You fully like– I'm like, look at this little tiny waist.
- 1:32Speaker 1: But no, you're like a little petite worked out thing.
- 1:35Speaker 1: And so you got into this exercise. But prior to
- 1:40Speaker 1: getting into the exercise, just give us a little background
- 1:41Speaker 1: on what your career was up until doing this podcast. Yeah.
- 1:45Speaker 2: So– I, back in the day, I started as a writer.
- 1:48Speaker 2: I helped, I was a founding writer of like the
- 1:51Speaker 2: largest independent lesbian website, like period. It still exists.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Oh, great.
- 1:56Speaker 2: And there I interviewed like everyone I ever wanted, like
- 2:01Speaker 2: everyone from the L word, Sandra Bernhardt, Margaret Cho, any
- 2:05Speaker 2: like tangentially related, like so lesbian person.
- 2:08Speaker 1: Yeah, so lesbian. That's a great name.
- 2:11Speaker 2: And that is where I first met Julian Brandy. We
- 2:14Speaker 2: go way back because they used to do video movie
- 2:17Speaker 2: reviews for that site, which is called Autostraddle. OK. And
- 2:23Speaker 2: so that's why I've known Julie and Brent. We've like
- 2:25Speaker 2: traveled together. We've like been in tents together. Like we've
- 2:29Speaker 2: done it all. And so that was where I really
- 2:32Speaker 2: learned how to like book guests and like write an
- 2:34Speaker 2: email that will get a response. I was like a
- 2:36Speaker 2: below nobody, nothing. And. Then years later, I mean, I've
- 2:41Speaker 2: worked in tech full time, but, like, this was really
- 2:44Speaker 2: my passion. And then when I was always a podcast listener,
- 2:49Speaker 2: and specifically yours was actually one of the first podcasts.
- 2:53Speaker 2: Aside from Howard Stern, you were really, like, the first
- 2:57Speaker 2: true podcast, like, on the iPod that I ever got into.
- 3:01Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 3:02Speaker 2: I was ahead of the curve with the technology. And
- 3:04Speaker 2: so anyway, and so I've been listening since, like, the
- 3:07Speaker 2: early days. Like, podcasts weren't, like. And I fell into podcast.
- 3:13Speaker 2: Like I was always a behind the scenes, but like
- 3:15Speaker 2: a writer and like a journalist. And I somehow like
- 3:20Speaker 2: I got real. My ex really got me into the housewives,
- 3:23Speaker 2: like something that I never thought I'd get into. And
- 3:25Speaker 2: she's like, you just need to understand Bethany Frankel. And
- 3:29Speaker 2: then I realized she is my soulmate. I realized, oh,
- 3:36Speaker 2: this is I can really. And she's like, you need
- 3:38Speaker 2: to understand Jill Zarin.
- 3:39Speaker 1: And so, of course, I... Because you're a New Yorker. Obviously,
- 3:42Speaker 1: we hear you're a New Yorker in your voice.
- 3:43Speaker 2: I'm a Long... Yeah, I'm from Long Island. Originally, I'm
- 3:45Speaker 2: from Long Island.
- 3:46Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:46Speaker 2: Much like Jill Zara. Yes. Yeah. And so, of course,
- 3:51Speaker 2: because I'm then going to take it to the extreme, I, like,
- 3:54Speaker 2: begin doing a podcast. And I just take it, you know,
- 3:57Speaker 2: all to the extreme. And so I was doing, like,
- 4:00Speaker 2: a Bravo-related... But, like, every New York housewife has, like,
- 4:03Speaker 2: been in my apartment. So then I interviewed... Because I
- 4:05Speaker 2: had that background in interviewing, like, I knew... how to
- 4:08Speaker 2: be really meticulous with research and how to make people
- 4:12Speaker 2: really feel comfortable. And then because I was such a
- 4:15Speaker 2: Howard Stern fan, I really understood the art of the
- 4:21Speaker 2: audio medium and how to do it just because I
- 4:25Speaker 2: was a listener. So I just innately understood. And then
- 4:29Speaker 2: it grew, the show, I moved away from Bravo and
- 4:34Speaker 2: I started really like going back to my roots, like, interviewing, like,
- 4:38Speaker 2: Sandra Bernhardt, Margaret, like, now in audio form. And, like,
- 4:42Speaker 2: Rosie O'Donnell was, like, a huge, that was a.
- 4:44Speaker 1: Big, like, breakthrough.
- 4:45Speaker 2: Of course, during COVID, everyone's, like, doing nothing. So, like,
- 4:47Speaker 2: I was able to do all these major interviews. And
- 4:50Speaker 2: then I, I've always loved documentary, but, like, how would
- 4:56Speaker 2: I make a, I'm not a filmmaker. Like, and then
- 4:58Speaker 2: I realized, oh, I can just use my medium. And
- 5:02Speaker 2: I just figured it out. And this is my second medium.
- 5:04Speaker 4: Employers, rewarding your staff with vouchers this year? Here's the
- 5:08Speaker 4: good news. With OptionsCard.ie, there's no forms, no uploads, no delays.
- 5:14Speaker 4: Just choose who to reward and how much. OptionsCard handles
- 5:18Speaker 4: the rest. Your team gets one voucher, opening a world
- 5:21Speaker 4: of choice. They can even re-gift some of the value.
- 5:24Speaker 4: One reward, endless choice.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Skip the hassle, reward the easy way. OptionsCard.ie. And your
- 5:33Speaker 1: first one was?
- 5:34Speaker 2: On the History of Fire Island.
- 5:36Speaker 1: Which is a gay, not a gay island. I mean,
- 5:40Speaker 1: it's an island. It is a gay island. But I mean,
- 5:41Speaker 1: you don't have to be gay to be there. But
- 5:43Speaker 1: it was like the first kind of like vacation East
- 5:47Speaker 1: Coast vacation homes for gay people to go to, right?
- 5:52Speaker 2: Starting in the 50s.
- 5:54Speaker 1: Oh, okay. So it was like there and Palm Springs.
- 5:58Speaker 1: But I feel like Palm Springs wasn't, it was, Palm
- 6:01Speaker 1: Springs was more of, like, an escape from Hollywood. But
- 6:04Speaker 1: because there were so many secret gay people in Hollywood
- 6:07Speaker 1: is where it then became such a, like, a gay community.
- 6:11Speaker 1: I never thought you were right. Yeah.
- 6:13Speaker 2: But this was, like, back when being gay was illegal. Right. Like,
- 6:16Speaker 2: you couldn't, like, they would arrest people. Like, they had
- 6:20Speaker 2: a quota of people. And even on Fire Island, there
- 6:22Speaker 2: was a quota of people they had to round up. And, like,
- 6:25Speaker 2: they would arrest them. And people would lose their jobs.
- 6:29Speaker 2: for having like public sex, you know, they'd be written
- 6:31Speaker 2: up in the newspaper and then they, because they were outed,
- 6:35Speaker 2: they would lose their jobs.
- 6:37Speaker 1: Oh my God.
- 6:37Speaker 2: And so, but in that series, I interviewed people who
- 6:41Speaker 2: have been there from the 50s all the way to
- 6:43Speaker 2: like Joel Kim Booster to like make this a sellable product.
- 6:46Speaker 1: Right.
- 6:47Speaker 2: But there, like I interviewed this like 90 year old
- 6:49Speaker 2: drag queen who like, he's the oldest living drag queen, period.
- 6:52Speaker 5: Amazing.
- 6:53Speaker 2: He's like an icon on Fire Island. He's in like
- 6:55Speaker 2: in a suit singing like Judy Garland.
- 6:57Speaker 1: Amazing.
- 6:58Speaker 2: Yes.
- 6:59Speaker 1: So you do all that. And at the time, the
- 7:02Speaker 1: SoulCycle thing was something that I personally, I think I've
- 7:07Speaker 1: done it like twice. I had every friend of mine
- 7:09Speaker 1: that was into working out loved it. It just wasn't
- 7:13Speaker 1: for me.
- 7:14Speaker 2: Were you ever like into fitness?
- 7:17Speaker 1: I actually hate cardio. No, I like Pilates. I like yoga.
- 7:21Speaker 1: I like going on like a four mile walk.
- 7:24Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 7:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:25Speaker 1: I just was never into like cardio jazzercise.
- 7:29Speaker 2: Like classes.
- 7:30Speaker 1: Yeah, and the classes. And like, you know, but it
- 7:33Speaker 1: was fine. Like when people would invite me, I would
- 7:35Speaker 1: go and I'd feel good about myself. But I never
- 7:37Speaker 1: like joined one where I was going three days a
- 7:40Speaker 1: week at 9 a.m.
- 7:41Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 7:42Speaker 1: And it just seemed like it was such a big thing.
- 7:45Speaker 1: And then there were stories that came out about it.
- 7:48Speaker 1: And then there was like, wasn't there like a SoulCycle
- 7:50Speaker 1: guy that like became super famous?
- 7:52Speaker 2: Yes.
- 7:53Speaker 1: That also was, like, on Dancing with the Stars or something? Like,
- 7:55Speaker 1: the actual people doing the stuff became celebrities, right?
- 8:00Speaker 2: Particularly the New York. Because it started in New York.
- 8:04Speaker 2: Spinning really started in L.A. Like, actually, the first episode,
- 8:09Speaker 2: the title of it is Made in L.A. Uh-huh. Because
- 8:11Speaker 2: this all, if you trace back, like, spinning and indoor cycling,
- 8:16Speaker 2: the story starts here. And so it.
- 8:20Speaker 1: Was such.
- 8:22Speaker 2: You know where I first heard the word spinning? The
- 8:26Speaker 2: year is 1997. And Helen Hunt is about to win
- 8:30Speaker 2: the Oscar for As Good As It Gets. And she's
- 8:32Speaker 2: interviewed on the red carpet. I can't believe this memory
- 8:35Speaker 2: is coming back to me. I've never said this outside
- 8:37Speaker 2: my head. And she's interviewed on the red carpet. And
- 8:41Speaker 2: they're like, oh, because she lost weight from Mad About You,
- 8:44Speaker 2: which I was such a fan of that show. And
- 8:46Speaker 2: they're like, oh, my God, what are you doing? And
- 8:48Speaker 2: she's like, I've been doing a lot of spinning. And I, like,
- 8:53Speaker 2: I don't know if I Google, like, Yahoo, whatever, you know, like,
- 8:56Speaker 2: what is spinning? Like, because it was 97.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:59Speaker 2: But in L.A., it was happening at, like, Gold's Gym.
- 9:04Speaker 1: I remember a Patti Stanger when she would, like, do
- 9:07Speaker 1: her show, Million Dollar Matchmaker, and even when she talks now,
- 9:10Speaker 1: she would say, oh, so you like a spinner? You
- 9:12Speaker 1: like a little spinner girl? Meaning, like, a small, skinny
- 9:16Speaker 1: girl that could do a spinning class.
- 9:20Speaker 2: Like, and She would say that to the guys.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Yeah, like, is that the type that you want?
- 9:25Speaker 2: Yeah, to the millionaires. I remember that.
- 9:27Speaker 1: You want, like, a little spinner, like, you know, of
- 9:29Speaker 1: what it is. And, you know, right now, I want
- 9:34Speaker 1: to get into the whole thing, but, like, I do feel, like,
- 9:37Speaker 1: in the exercise world, especially in LA, because people are
- 9:39Speaker 1: always looking for the fix, you know? Now, it's a shot,
- 9:44Speaker 1: you know? Like, get your shot on. It's so wild.
- 9:48Speaker 1: But you still need to work out.
- 9:49Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:50Speaker 1: But it's amazing, like, how... My friends that were really
- 9:53Speaker 1: into exercise.
- 9:54Speaker 2: Tell me.
- 9:55Speaker 1: So it was, they were into spinning. They were into
- 9:59Speaker 1: the bar method. which was like ballet with a bar
- 10:02Speaker 1: or something where you're like, I don't know. Those were classes.
- 10:05Speaker 1: Those were franchises that you could do.
- 10:08Speaker 2: Remember Tracy Anderson?
- 10:09Speaker 1: Then Tracy Anderson would do this weird like where people
- 10:13Speaker 1: were like, okay, allegedly she Weren't people, like, breaking ankles
- 10:17Speaker 1: and stuff? Correct. Because you would, like, do a weird, like, jumping, like,
- 10:21Speaker 1: on wood. It was.
- 10:22Speaker 2: The stories that would come out of that were crazy.
- 10:25Speaker 1: Okay, can we talk about some alleged stories? I'm trying
- 10:27Speaker 1: to remember. What was that? Because that was, like, the
- 10:29Speaker 1: Gwyneth Paltrow... No, you hit it.
- 10:30Speaker 2: That's the... I'm remembering that story.
- 10:33Speaker 1: What you just said. Yeah, and I remember, like, when
- 10:35Speaker 1: I was on Chelsea Lately, they'd talk about it, or
- 10:37Speaker 1: maybe Chelsea was very athletic, so I think maybe she
- 10:39Speaker 1: tried to do it. And then she became a celebrity
- 10:42Speaker 1: on her own, the Tracy Anderson... Method, yeah.
- 10:45Speaker 2: And.
- 10:45Speaker 1: Yeah, and then I saw you did an interview recently
- 10:49Speaker 1: where they were talking about the old Bravo show.
- 10:52Speaker 2: Workout with Jackie Warner.
- 10:54Speaker 1: Yes.
- 10:55Speaker 2: I could do an hour on Jackie Warner if you
- 10:57Speaker 2: want to go there. I mean, do you remember?
- 10:59Speaker 1: Were you with?
- 11:00Speaker 6: Yes.
- 11:00Speaker 1: First of all, I was watching Bravo when it was
- 11:05Speaker 1: just the guy in front of the college kids talking
- 11:09Speaker 1: to an A-list actor. What was that called?
- 11:11Speaker 2: Inside the Actor's Studio.
- 11:12Speaker 1: Inside the Actor's Studio, and then The first reality show
- 11:15Speaker 1: I ever saw on Bravo, which I bring up at
- 11:18Speaker 1: least three times a year. And it's something that we
- 11:22Speaker 1: will never be able to redo because it was locked
- 11:25Speaker 1: in a certain time in L.A., which was showbiz moms
- 11:29Speaker 1: and dads. And the kids come out for pilot season
- 11:33Speaker 1: and they live at those apartments. I can't even think
- 11:37Speaker 1: of the name.
- 11:38Speaker 2: The Oakwood Apartments. The Oakwood Apartments.
- 11:41Speaker 1: And they're trying to get a sitcom. And they had
- 11:44Speaker 1: like a toddler and tiara type of person. They had
- 11:47Speaker 1: like a mom trying to make her son, her son,
- 11:50Speaker 1: like a country singer. It was, it was like one
- 11:54Speaker 1: of the greatest, if I could just go back to
- 11:56Speaker 1: that time of my life, God said, do you want
- 11:58Speaker 1: to go back? Like that would be one of the
- 11:59Speaker 1: times that I'd be like, just take me back to
- 12:01Speaker 1: that house that I was living in and watching those shows.
- 12:05Speaker 1: Cause I, it was just fascinating to me because, um, I, I,
- 12:09Speaker 1: We had an agent growing up. My nieces and nephews did.
- 12:14Speaker 1: So it was just very interesting. But with Jackie Warner,
- 12:18Speaker 1: she had a gym.
- 12:19Speaker 2: Sky Sport and Spa.
- 12:20Speaker 1: And she's a lesbian. A big one. What does a
- 12:25Speaker 1: big one mean? Are you a little one because you're little?
- 12:29Speaker 2: It's a quote from the first Wives Club.
- 12:32Speaker 1: Oh, okay. A big one.
- 12:36Speaker 2: So what happened to her? I have a five-part miniseries
- 12:42Speaker 2: out on my regular show. I've interviewed her five times.
- 12:45Speaker 1: Where is she now? Ohio. Doing what?
- 12:49Speaker 2: She trains people on Zoom, if you're interested.
- 12:51Speaker 1: Okay. But did she have, in a nutshell, and then
- 12:54Speaker 1: everybody go back and listen to your five-part series. Did
- 12:56Speaker 1: she have like a breakup with fame after the show
- 13:01Speaker 1: or what was it?
- 13:01Speaker 2: Okay. I'll quickly give you the Jackie Warner like.
- 13:04Speaker 1: Okay.
- 13:04Speaker 2: I'm going to do a tight three on Jackie Warner.
- 13:06Speaker 1: Okay. You can do a tight four. Okay.
- 13:09Speaker 2: I mean, I could talk for hours. This is so interesting.
- 13:11Speaker 2: Her whole story is interesting. So first of all, you know, she.
- 13:16Speaker 1: So it was a gym show. I'll just tell you.
- 13:18Speaker 1: It was a show about her running her L.A. gym.
- 13:21Speaker 1: I think she had a partner. She had a couple
- 13:22Speaker 1: people who worked there. And it was just the drama
- 13:24Speaker 1: that happened.
- 13:25Speaker 2: It was the drama with the trainers.
- 13:26Speaker 1: With the trainers at a very exclusive, like, L.A.
- 13:28Speaker 2: Gym. Yes.
- 13:29Speaker 1: And there's some celebrities that pop in and make a cameo.
- 13:31Speaker 2: Oh, she trained, like, Alanis Morissette. Jodie Foster would work out. Like,
- 13:35Speaker 2: they all became, like, her clients.
- 13:38Speaker 5: Okay.
- 13:38Speaker 1: So tell the story.
- 13:39Speaker 2: So prior to her opening, so she was with Jillian
- 13:44Speaker 2: Michaels for six years.
- 13:45Speaker 1: As a couple?
- 13:46Speaker 2: Yes.
- 13:47Speaker 5: Oh, okay.
- 13:47Speaker 1: I didn't know that.
- 13:48Speaker 2: And that was not public information. I knew it, but
- 13:51Speaker 2: it was not public until our first interview.
- 13:54Speaker 1: And Jillian Michaels, for people to remember, she was the
- 13:58Speaker 1: pretty brunette trainer that was on the weight loss show
- 14:02Speaker 1: where they'd make the people take off their shirts and
- 14:04Speaker 1: weigh themselves.
- 14:05Speaker 2: Biggest loser.
- 14:06Speaker 5: Yes.
- 14:06Speaker 2: With Bob Harper, who was on this year's Traders.
- 14:10Speaker 1: Oh, interesting.
- 14:11Speaker 2: Yeah, remember him?
- 14:12Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. He's got the tattoos. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 14:15Speaker 1: They were the trainers and they would.
- 14:18Speaker 2: But she was known to be really, Jillian was known
- 14:20Speaker 2: to be like really abusive, allegedly.
- 14:23Speaker 1: Verbally to the people you mean?
- 14:25Speaker 2: Just in general.
- 14:27Speaker 1: Okay.
- 14:27Speaker 2: To everybody in society. She's banned from Watch What Happens Live.
- 14:31Speaker 1: Oh, well, I probably am too. I don't know about that. Anyway,
- 14:34Speaker 1: go on. Yeah.
- 14:35Speaker 2: So they, what people don't know is they opened the
- 14:39Speaker 2: gym featured on Workout. They co-owned that gym. And then
- 14:45Speaker 2: producers- approach. So she, they opened that gym. Producers are
- 14:50Speaker 2: casting the biggest loser. They go to Jackie Warner first.
- 14:54Speaker 2: And she's like, I don't want to do that. I
- 14:55Speaker 2: just opened this gym and then puts Jillian up for it.
- 14:59Speaker 1: Who was her girlfriend.
- 15:00Speaker 2: Yes. Okay.
- 15:01Speaker 1: Okay, cool. And, and wasn't, but wasn't Jillian, which is
- 15:05Speaker 1: kind of interesting because I interviewed her once. Wasn't Jillian,
- 15:08Speaker 1: I thought the story was this. So this is interesting.
- 15:12Speaker 1: I thought the story was Jillian was like an agent's assistant.
- 15:17Speaker 1: She was an agent's assistant. And then somehow heard about
- 15:22Speaker 1: the show and was already in fitness and put herself
- 15:25Speaker 1: up for it.
- 15:26Speaker 2: No.
- 15:26Speaker 1: Okay. But I might have the wrong story. And I'm
- 15:30Speaker 1: not saying that Jillian told me that. For some reason,
- 15:32Speaker 1: that's what I remember. Well, this is what Jackie.
- 15:34Speaker 2: Warner told me. So who are we believing? You can choose.
- 15:38Speaker 1: It's not a bad story. Either one is fine. Either
- 15:40Speaker 1: one is. So what? You still were a star on
- 15:42Speaker 1: the show, Jillian. Yeah. You know, you still made the show.
- 15:45Speaker 1: So go on. Yeah.
- 15:47Speaker 2: So ultimately. So then, of course, Jackie gets workout. Very successful.
- 15:53Speaker 2: Becomes like the go to fitness person in all the
- 15:57Speaker 2: magazines like self like she's on the cover. And whenever
- 16:00Speaker 2: they need a quote from like an expert.
- 16:02Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 16:03Speaker 2: They're going to her because she's the face of health
- 16:06Speaker 2: and fitness. But then here's what happened. She went to sleep.
- 16:13Speaker 2: She took an Ambien to go to sleep. And she,
- 16:17Speaker 2: remember when people were like tweeting on Ambien and like
- 16:21Speaker 2: eating like crazy in the middle.
- 16:23Speaker 1: Of the night? Yeah, like getting up in the middle
- 16:24Speaker 1: of the night and like driving.
- 16:26Speaker 2: That's exactly what happened to her. And she drove to
- 16:30Speaker 2: 7-Eleven in like her panties and like no shoes to
- 16:35Speaker 2: like get chips. And they arrested her.
- 16:40Speaker 1: For a DUI.
- 16:41Speaker 2: Like, she didn't even do anything. She was, like, it
- 16:45Speaker 2: looked intoxicated because you're, like, out of it. She was
- 16:47Speaker 2: in a blackout. It was, like, an Ambien blackout. And DUI,
- 16:52Speaker 2: the mugshot TMZ.
- 16:53Speaker 1: Is Ambien even still around? I feel like no one
- 16:57Speaker 1: talks about Ambien anymore. Because it was also, like, the
- 17:00Speaker 1: stories of, like, Tiger Woods would take Ambien and be
- 17:03Speaker 1: with his lovers.
- 17:04Speaker 2: And isn't that what Roseanne blamed those tweets on?
- 17:08Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 17:08Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 17:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 17:10Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 17:10Speaker 1: Okay. So they arrest her for that. And also that
- 17:12Speaker 1: looks bad because you're buying chips.
- 17:15Speaker 2: That's the least of her problems was the chips. So
- 17:19Speaker 2: she said in our third interview, I finally got around
- 17:23Speaker 2: to like, so why did you go home to Ohio?
- 17:25Speaker 2: You know, like she left, she... coincidentally left L.A. right
- 17:29Speaker 2: before the pandemic.
- 17:31Speaker 1: Okay.
- 17:31Speaker 2: She's from Ohio, so her family is there.
- 17:33Speaker 1: So the show had been off for a while, like
- 17:36Speaker 1: 10 years, and she was still being a successful trainer.
- 17:40Speaker 5: Yes.
- 17:40Speaker 1: Took the Ambien, got arrested for that, and then left.
- 17:43Speaker 1: That's a career killer.
- 17:45Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 17:45Speaker 2: Yeah, like, it all dried up. Like, the appearances, like,
- 17:48Speaker 2: the jobs really dried up. Like, that's.
- 17:52Speaker 1: The worst thing maybe that could have happened. How did
- 17:54Speaker 1: she feel about... the role that the TV show played
- 17:59Speaker 1: in her overall life and career? Was it all positive, negative?
- 18:03Speaker 2: I think mostly all positive.
- 18:04Speaker 1: Okay.
- 18:05Speaker 2: Yeah. I think mostly all positive.

- 18:28Speaker 5: I'm Darman, and this is What Happens Next. Each week
- 18:32Speaker 5: on the show, I sit down with extraordinary people who
- 18:35Speaker 5: have faced tremendous setbacks and yet somehow have found a
- 18:39Speaker 5: way to turn them into their greatest strengths.
- 18:42Speaker 2: Life is one long lesson of chaos.
- 18:45Speaker 1: I'm heading to the Emmys, and I have police complaints
- 18:47Speaker 1: filed against me. When your free will was about to
- 18:49Speaker 1: be taken from you, what would.
- 18:51Speaker 2: You do if it was given back?
- 18:53Speaker 5: Where did that need come from where you thought that
- 18:56Speaker 5: you had to succeed in order to feel loved?
- 18:58Speaker 1: He said, I have a work dad.
- 18:59Speaker 5: I need a home dad.
- 19:00Speaker 1: What happens next?
- 19:01Speaker 4: When I came in, he started crying.
- 19:03Speaker 5: Everybody in life encounters hardships. What defines them is not
- 19:08Speaker 5: those hard moments that they go through. It's about what
- 19:10Speaker 5: happens next.
- 19:11Speaker 1: I decided to risk it all. I realized how valuable
- 19:14Speaker 1: every day was. You're worth the work. Listen, Dara, I'm
- 19:17Speaker 1: not going to pull punches. You can use your voice
- 19:19Speaker 1: even if it's shaped.
- 19:20Speaker 5: The stories are different, but the impact is the same.
- 19:23Speaker 5: Only one question matters. What happens next?
- 19:34Speaker 1: So you're in New York. You're into this. Tell me
- 19:38Speaker 1: a little bit about your experience and then why you
- 19:40Speaker 1: felt that there was a whole story to be told
- 19:43Speaker 1: on a multi-episode series here. Yeah. So I was always
- 19:49Speaker 1: into working.
- 19:50Speaker 2: Out. And, like, I always went to the gym. And
- 19:54Speaker 2: I would occasionally take spin classes at my gym and
- 19:58Speaker 2: hated it. But I kept going back. I don't know why.
- 20:01Speaker 2: I don't know why. I don't have an answer. And then...
- 20:06Speaker 2: A friend was like, my friend.
- 20:07Speaker 1: But do you believe that working out can be an addiction?
- 20:09Speaker 2: 100%. It's called orthorexia. Oh, interesting. Whatever goes in has
- 20:15Speaker 2: to come out. Well, not in an eating disorder way,
- 20:18Speaker 2: in like an exercise compulsion way.
- 20:20Speaker 1: Oh, of course. Why? That sounds like the worst addiction.
- 20:24Speaker 1: Not something I never have to worry about.
- 20:25Speaker 2: I think I have it.
- 20:27Speaker 1: Really?
- 20:27Speaker 2: Do you think you might a little bit? Well, I
- 20:28Speaker 2: think I'm very, I definitely have like addict compulsive energy.
- 20:34Speaker 2: But luckily it manifests in like healthy things.
- 20:38Speaker 1: Okay.
- 20:39Speaker 2: Rather, I mean, that can be really impulsive.
- 20:41Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 20:41Speaker 2: But also that can be good too.
- 20:43Speaker 5: Right.
- 20:44Speaker 2: But it's not, I never was into like drinking or drugs,
- 20:47Speaker 2: but I can like do this.
- 20:50Speaker 6: Okay.
- 20:51Speaker 1: So you never ended the spinning at your gym.
- 20:53Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 20:53Speaker 1: And so then how did you?
- 20:55Speaker 2: A friend of mine lived next to a studio.
- 20:58Speaker 1: Okay.
- 20:58Speaker 2: Now like cut to like we're in Manhattan.
- 21:00Speaker 1: What year is this now?
- 21:02Speaker 2: This was like, 2011. Okay. So SoulCycle had opened, but
- 21:05Speaker 2: it was just like one studio at first.
- 21:08Speaker 1: And so.
- 21:10Speaker 2: What's interesting, I mean, the way SoulCycle was founded is
- 21:13Speaker 2: like very juicy and interesting. And that's all. It's basically,
- 21:16Speaker 2: without like giving it, without like telling the whole story,
- 21:19Speaker 2: it's basically what happens when three women come together. You
- 21:24Speaker 2: know how like three's a really bad number?
- 21:26Speaker 1: I always remember my sister picking up her daughter from
- 21:30Speaker 1: a play date and she then she goes, oh, and
- 21:34Speaker 1: we should, next time we should also include whatever, little Jenny.
- 21:38Speaker 2: That's the beginning and the end.
- 21:39Speaker 1: And the mom goes, I don't think threes work.
- 21:43Speaker 2: Why'd she say that?
- 21:44Speaker 1: The mom just said it. And it always just, and
- 21:46Speaker 1: I was just, I was not a mom at the time.
- 21:49Speaker 1: And my sister was like, why not? Like everyone can,
- 21:53Speaker 1: you know, the more the merrier and they're all friends.
- 21:56Speaker 1: And so it just is stuck into my head. And I,
- 21:58Speaker 1: it's not a rule I, you know, ever attested to it.
- 22:02Speaker 1: I've had lunches with three people. It's fabulous. Like, whatever.
- 22:05Speaker 2: You know what? Think of, like, the White Lotus.
- 22:08Speaker 1: Yeah, that's what was so interesting, the White Lotus aspect.
- 22:10Speaker 2: That is the perfect dramatization of this phenomenon that happens
- 22:17Speaker 2: in female friendships. Like, I think it's the first episode
- 22:20Speaker 2: of the White Lotus where, like, you find them, like,
- 22:22Speaker 2: talking shit about each other.
- 22:24Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 22:24Speaker 2: And, like, it's all, like, great when they're together. But inevitably,
- 22:28Speaker 2: and this is women. Gossip is the social lubricant of society.
- 22:34Speaker 2: And women will always be talking about each other. Even
- 22:40Speaker 2: if they love, there's just a thing.
- 22:43Speaker 1: No, I mean, that's why, I mean, look, I was
- 22:47Speaker 1: always scared to walk to school, walk into a classroom
- 22:49Speaker 1: and have someone be like, I heard what you said
- 22:51Speaker 1: about me. And before there were podcasts where now everybody
- 22:54Speaker 1: just freely talks about each other and at least we
- 22:57Speaker 1: can make money at it. But it is weird when
- 23:00Speaker 1: you actually now in this day and age can listen
- 23:03Speaker 1: to your friend or a cohort person, someone who does
- 23:07Speaker 1: what we do, and hear them like tell some story
- 23:09Speaker 1: about you. And you're like, well, that's not even true,
- 23:13Speaker 1: but I don't know if I want to address it.
- 23:15Speaker 1: And then it becomes a big thing, whatever. And I'm like,
- 23:18Speaker 1: this is so weird because It used to be that, yeah,
- 23:21Speaker 1: everyone talked behind each other's backs, but we didn't know
- 23:23Speaker 1: what they were saying. Unless you did the three-way call,
- 23:27Speaker 1: which you might have been too young for. Oh, I
- 23:30Speaker 1: was not too, of course. Where you could like secretly
- 23:34Speaker 1: have someone listen. I think they might have done it
- 23:37Speaker 1: in the movie Mean Girls. But like you could call
- 23:40Speaker 1: and you'd be like, okay, shut up, don't say a word.
- 23:43Speaker 1: And then the girl would call another girl and they would,
- 23:46Speaker 1: that girl would get, the person to talk about the
- 23:49Speaker 1: one who's on silent. And this would happen like in
- 23:54Speaker 1: high school. And it was just, and weirdly enough, I
- 24:00Speaker 1: don't really think that as we mature, you know, our
- 24:06Speaker 1: priorities become our partners and our kids, if we're mothers
- 24:09Speaker 1: or our careers, or we just are like, oh, the
- 24:11Speaker 1: petty stuff doesn't matter as much. But the reason Real
- 24:15Speaker 1: Housewives is so popular is because essentially it is about
- 24:19Speaker 1: women's friendships. That's all these shows are about, are women's friendships.
- 24:23Speaker 1: And that's our sporting event, is watching can these people
- 24:26Speaker 1: be friends because they tell each other off who's right,
- 24:29Speaker 1: who's wrong. And then they sit back and they're like, oh,
- 24:31Speaker 1: but I love those two together. I'm like, you writing
- 24:34Speaker 1: in the comments is what tore these two people apart
- 24:37Speaker 1: or whatever. And then if we don't think it's authentic...
- 24:40Speaker 1: Then we're like, oh, well, they're just doing it for
- 24:42Speaker 1: the show. And so getting back to your thing, so
- 24:45Speaker 1: three women.
- 24:45Speaker 2: So this is, I'm going to give it to you
- 24:47Speaker 2: in like a quick nutshell to like illustrate this. So
- 24:50Speaker 2: the way SoulCycle was founded, and this is just like
- 24:53Speaker 2: a taste of like, this is like the initial jumping
- 24:58Speaker 2: off point. Essentially to like really boil it down, you
- 25:03Speaker 2: have a woman who was a talent agent in LA.
- 25:06Speaker 2: She worked for Benny Medina.
- 25:08Speaker 1: Oh, okay.
- 25:08Speaker 6: Okay.
- 25:09Speaker 2: So that's the person- That's J-Lo's big manager agent. So
- 25:11Speaker 2: she understood how to turn celebrities into brands.
- 25:14Speaker 5: Okay.
- 25:14Speaker 2: So like J-Lo, Tyra Banks, P.
- 25:16Speaker 1: Diddy. Okay?
- 25:18Speaker 2: So that's one of them. And so she understood LA.
- 25:22Speaker 2: She winds up moving back to New York. Another woman
- 25:28Speaker 2: was successful. Her husband worked in finance. They had money.
- 25:32Speaker 2: And then this third person was just a spin instructor,
- 25:35Speaker 2: teaching spin at a gym. And- separately, the talent agent
- 25:41Speaker 2: and the woman with money say to their spin instructor,
- 25:44Speaker 2: they did not know each other. They separately say to
- 25:46Speaker 2: the spin instructor, I have dreams of opening a spin
- 25:51Speaker 2: studio because boutique spin didn't exist.
- 25:53Speaker 1: Okay. Okay.
- 25:55Speaker 2: And so the spin instructor is like, let's go to lunch.
- 25:59Speaker 2: So they go to lunch at the Soho house. This
- 26:01Speaker 2: is 2006.
- 26:02Speaker 1: The three of them together or she does a lunch
- 26:04Speaker 1: with each? No, no, no.
- 26:05Speaker 2: She goes, let me introduce you.
- 26:07Speaker 1: Okay.
- 26:07Speaker 2: Because the one had money.
- 26:09Speaker 1: Okay.
- 26:09Speaker 2: They didn't have money, but the other one.
- 26:11Speaker 1: The talent agent didn't have money.
- 26:12Speaker 2: No.
- 26:13Speaker 5: Okay.
- 26:13Speaker 2: Even though she was an agent.
- 26:14Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 26:16Speaker 2: Story of LA. So, says the New Yorker. So, spin
- 26:23Speaker 2: instructor goes, let's all go to the solo house and
- 26:25Speaker 2: like talk. Like, I think this other woman can like
- 26:26Speaker 2: help us out. Like, she has the same dream and
- 26:29Speaker 2: has money. Like, the point.
- 26:30Speaker 1: Like, she had money to throw into a startup.
- 26:32Speaker 2: They go to the Soho house in like January of 2006.
- 26:38Speaker 2: Four months later, they open the first SoulCycle. A year later,
- 26:45Speaker 2: the spin instructor is cut.
- 26:47Speaker 1: Out of the deal. How does that happen?
- 26:50Speaker 2: Because allegedly, and she wrote this in a book, it
- 26:58Speaker 2: is true, she did not have legal protection.
- 27:02Speaker 1: In place oh she never did like a contract with them.
- 27:06Speaker 2: The contracts weren't written right or they weren't didn't exist
- 27:11Speaker 2: that's a little bit fuzzy that part's a little like
- 27:15Speaker 2: why wouldn't you have your contract written like that's a
- 27:17Speaker 2: question that like we may not know or that's an
- 27:20Speaker 2: off the record thing but essentially you have these two
- 27:24Speaker 2: really savvy businesswoman. You have a shark from LA who's
- 27:28Speaker 2: a talent manager who knows how to build celebrities and
- 27:31Speaker 2: build a brand and knows how to market. And you
- 27:33Speaker 2: have this other woman who is really great at real
- 27:35Speaker 2: estate and who has a husband in finance, understands money.
- 27:39Speaker 2: And then you have a fitness instructor. Yeah. She becomes
- 27:44Speaker 2: the face of it, like brings her clientele and her riders.
- 27:47Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 27:48Speaker 2: And so for the first year, they're all her riders
- 27:51Speaker 2: from like the gym she had been teaching at.
- 27:53Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 27:54Speaker 2: The other two basically realized she didn't want to run the,
- 28:00Speaker 2: she didn't know how to run a business.
- 28:01Speaker 5: Right.
- 28:02Speaker 2: She was a fitness, she was a spin instructor.
- 28:03Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 28:04Speaker 2: And she, there was just like a personality clashing and
- 28:10Speaker 2: just like what happens when like one doesn't fit in.
- 28:13Speaker 1: So do they at least like give her a chunk
- 28:14Speaker 1: of money and buy her out?
- 28:17Speaker 2: Eventually what happens is they sell, cut two years later.
- 28:22Speaker 2: They sell SoulCycle to Equinox. And the two remaining.
- 28:28Speaker 1: How much?
- 28:29Speaker 2: The two remaining get $ 90 million each. Do you know
- 28:35Speaker 2: how much this.
- 28:35Speaker 1: In two years, Equinox bought this? It grew that fast? No,
- 28:39Speaker 1: that happened in 2016. Well, five years. No, 10 years.
- 28:44Speaker 2: 2006 to 2016. Okay.
- 28:45Speaker 1: Still, that is kind of amazing. Okay.
- 28:48Speaker 2: Yeah. So they walk away with $ 90 million... each the
- 28:54Speaker 2: fit the spin instructor who introduced them is long gone
- 28:58Speaker 2: she went on to co-found flywheel.
- 29:00Speaker 1: But the flywheel didn't last yeah there was a flywheel
- 29:05Speaker 1: near my house.
- 29:05Speaker 2: But do you know how much she got from from
- 29:09Speaker 2: which deal from the equinox buying soul cycle.
- 29:12Speaker 1: Let me guess 500 000 zero oh yeah and then
- 29:20Speaker 1: where is she now What happened with Flywheel's not around either.
- 29:23Speaker 2: Well, she went on. I mean, she definitely is a success.
- 29:28Speaker 2: She co-founded the two most successful indoor cycling companies.
- 29:33Speaker 1: Yeah. Period.
- 29:35Speaker 2: They sold Flywheel. I mean, eventually went out of business.
- 29:39Speaker 2: But shut up. I think she made her money with
- 29:41Speaker 2: flywheel and she was also older like she was her
- 29:45Speaker 2: kids were like in high school whereas the other two
- 29:49Speaker 2: they had like five month old babies so there is
- 29:52Speaker 2: that different there was you can imagine it's a different.
- 29:56Speaker 1: Life it's like I feel like, and then didn't something
- 30:00Speaker 1: recently happen politically with like Peloton?
- 30:05Speaker 2: I don't know about that.
- 30:06Speaker 1: Politically. I feel like there was a Peloton, something happened
- 30:11Speaker 1: with like Theo Vaughn and Peloton and like Dana White
- 30:15Speaker 1: or something.
- 30:15Speaker 2: Oh, I don't know about that.
- 30:17Speaker 1: And then Dana White was like, take Peloton out of
- 30:20Speaker 1: all of my gyms. Oh, I don't know. And so
- 30:24Speaker 1: I just wonder, like, are people like on the bikes
- 30:27Speaker 1: like they used to be? The bike as a thing
- 30:30Speaker 1: kind of like not as people are not as like
- 30:34Speaker 1: into it.
- 30:34Speaker 2: Well, in the pandemic. It was huge. In the pandemic,
- 30:38Speaker 2: Peloton like ran. You could do.
- 30:40Speaker 1: The walking Peloton. You could do the ride bike. And
- 30:43Speaker 1: they'd have like the videos of like how you could like,
- 30:45Speaker 1: you know, go through a field in Tuscany or something.
- 30:48Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 30:49Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
- 30:50Speaker 2: But like that's the kickoff. But your question, are people
- 30:53Speaker 2: still on the bike? It's not what it was. It's
- 30:59Speaker 2: not in the heyday of SoulCycle was like 20. The
- 31:04Speaker 2: apex of its popularity was, I would say, 2012 to 2018.
- 31:09Speaker 1: OK.
- 31:09Speaker 2: Especially in New York. I mean, it was very big
- 31:14Speaker 2: here in L.A., too. But in New York. a lot of,
- 31:20Speaker 2: I mean, those instructors, it was like the real housewives
- 31:23Speaker 2: of SoulCycle. They were in Page Six.
- 31:25Speaker 1: They were... But how much could, like, a SoulCycle instructor get?
- 31:30Speaker 1: Were they able to, like, live in the city while instructing?
- 31:33Speaker 1: Or were they only getting, like, a hundred bucks a ride?
- 31:36Speaker 2: No, the top instructors were making over a million dollars
- 31:38Speaker 2: a year.
- 31:39Speaker 1: How would they make a million dollars a year?
- 31:41Speaker 2: Because they sold out those classes. The two women, the two.
- 31:48Speaker 2: The ones who stayed, they understood how to, the reason
- 31:52Speaker 2: SoulCycle was so successful was because they wanted to make
- 31:56Speaker 2: it so that SoulCycle was their career. Okay, that's cool.
- 32:02Speaker 2: So the New York versus LA at the time was
- 32:06Speaker 2: in LA, like the trainer, the fitness professional would be
- 32:12Speaker 2: teaching at Gold's Gym. They'd have private clients. They'd be
- 32:15Speaker 2: like driving all around And then by the time they
- 32:17Speaker 2: got to your 5 o'clock class, they're, like, exhausted.
- 32:20Speaker 5: Right.
- 32:20Speaker 2: Because they've been running around. And so the main concept
- 32:25Speaker 2: behind SoulCycle was we're going to invest in our talent.
- 32:30Speaker 2: And they always said this is not a fitness business.
- 32:33Speaker 2: It's a hospitality and talent business. Yeah. They never saw
- 32:38Speaker 2: it as a fitness business.
- 32:38Speaker 1: I remember, like, there was really good, like, SNL sketches
- 32:41Speaker 1: about it and, like, you know, with the.
- 32:44Speaker 2: And so.
- 32:46Speaker 2: They made superstars out of these regular people riding a
- 32:52Speaker 2: fucking bike.
- 32:53Speaker 1: And this is really kind of before social media. So, like,
- 32:56Speaker 1: what other deals could they get? Like, where does the
- 32:59Speaker 1: culty part of it come about?
- 33:02Speaker 2: Cult of personality.
- 33:03Speaker 1: Oh, okay.
- 33:04Speaker 2: Yeah. The relationships between the riders and the instructors would...
- 33:11Speaker 2: They were– so a big thing that's been gatekept. So
- 33:15Speaker 2: that cut to me like getting– my story is like–
- 33:20Speaker 2: I'm very much like– I'm telling my story.
- 33:23Speaker 1: Okay.
- 33:24Speaker 2: You're hearing like my story with this and also the
- 33:27Speaker 2: company story like what I just explained with the three women.
- 33:30Speaker 2: So you'll hear like how I like get sucked in,
- 33:35Speaker 2: like how I get hooked.
- 33:36Speaker 1: Okay.
- 33:37Speaker 2: And– I loved it. Like, no complaints. I love a cult. Like,
- 33:40Speaker 2: I love it. Like, so, I'm not, this isn't, like,
- 33:43Speaker 2: a negative, like, I had 100% positive experience.
- 33:47Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 33:47Speaker 2: Which is why I'm the perfect person to, like, tell this.
- 33:49Speaker 2: I don't have an ax to grind.
- 33:50Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 33:50Speaker 2: I'm just telling the truth and making it very entertaining.
- 33:54Speaker 1: Okay.
- 33:55Speaker 2: So, something, so when I was, I used to say
- 33:59Speaker 2: to friends, I want to, I would joke that I
- 34:05Speaker 2: wanted to, like, go through the instructor training program, like
- 34:09Speaker 2: become a SoulCycle instructor.
- 34:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 34:12Speaker 2: Not because I wanted to teach SoulCycle, but because I
- 34:15Speaker 2: was so fascinated by the training program because it was known,
- 34:21Speaker 2: it was a thing in New York City that it
- 34:25Speaker 2: was like this like eight week program that they would
- 34:29Speaker 2: do in-house at SoulCycle. And it's like, So what would
- 34:35Speaker 2: they do?
- 34:36Speaker 1: What would they say?
- 34:37Speaker 2: They would teach them, and this is what you hear instructors, like,
- 34:40Speaker 2: take me through the training program. And, like, they were
- 34:43Speaker 2: taught how to seduce the riders.
- 34:47Speaker 1: I don't get it.
- 34:49Speaker 2: No, in a sense of how to get, for example, Heather, right?
- 34:52Speaker 1: Okay.
- 34:53Speaker 2: How to make it so you're taking a random, it's
- 34:55Speaker 2: your first time or whatever. Or, like, you've gone a
- 34:57Speaker 2: few times.
- 34:57Speaker 1: Okay, I'm on the bike.
- 34:59Speaker 2: I'm the instructor.
- 35:01Speaker 1: Okay. So.
- 35:02Speaker 2: There's a part, so they have their candles, like it's
- 35:05Speaker 2: dark and it's candlelit and everyone is sweating. It's sexual.
- 35:08Speaker 2: You're like fucking the bike for like 45 minutes.
- 35:12Speaker 1: Okay. Okay.
- 35:13Speaker 2: And then there's a moment, there's a moment toward the end.
- 35:18Speaker 2: And like the first three songs are all about seduction.
- 35:21Speaker 2: Like my voice is going to be really slow and
- 35:25Speaker 2: very deliberate and soft. And the songs are like, I
- 35:29Speaker 2: can't think of like a good example, but maybe like some,
- 35:33Speaker 2: For some reason, I want to say Usher, but, like,
- 35:34Speaker 2: not Usher.
- 35:34Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 35:35Speaker 2: Like, a good Rihanna song that's, like, a slower song that's, like,
- 35:39Speaker 2: easier to ride to.
- 35:41Speaker 1: Okay.
- 35:41Speaker 2: And you're all riding to the rhythm. So it's like
- 35:44Speaker 2: you're dancing. Okay. It's like SoulCycles for people who can't dance. Okay.
- 35:49Speaker 2: And it makes you feel like... Okay?
- 35:53Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 35:54Speaker 2: And the instructors are cast. Like, they used to lay
- 35:57Speaker 2: out headshots.
- 35:58Speaker 1: Uh-huh.
- 35:58Speaker 2: Like, the cast, the talent agent, she would lay out
- 36:01Speaker 2: headshots and be like, who's going to work really well
- 36:04Speaker 2: on the Upper East Side versus who's going to work
- 36:07Speaker 2: really well in the West Village. Two different clientele. And
- 36:10Speaker 2: she understood how to cast it, how to change the clothes,
- 36:14Speaker 2: what they should do to their hair. She knew how
- 36:17Speaker 2: to turn these people.
- 36:18Speaker 1: So how is this never a reality show? They must
- 36:21Speaker 1: have been approached.
- 36:22Speaker 2: So I've been told they tried to do a reality
- 36:27Speaker 2: show with the instructors. Couldn't get done.
- 36:30Speaker 1: I was told....
- 36:32Speaker 2: I've had this idea for a very long time.
- 36:35Speaker 6: And.
- 36:36Speaker 2: Because I knew this was so interesting.
- 36:38Speaker 1: Okay, how are people... What is this life like for, like,
- 36:41Speaker 1: people's knees as they get older?
- 36:43Speaker 2: We're talking hip replacements. We're talking... Like, a lot of
- 36:47Speaker 2: the instructors... That's a whole other conversation.
- 36:52Speaker 1: Right, it's not... The whole other... Like, how long can
- 36:55Speaker 1: you be this, like, sexy instructor?
- 36:57Speaker 2: Well, eventually... Eventually, they... teach off the bike they teach
- 37:03Speaker 2: from the floor the old ones let's not say that
- 37:07Speaker 2: but you can have a very long career teaching from
- 37:13Speaker 2: the floor okay like a yoga instructor is like walking
- 37:16Speaker 2: around yeah and then they have like a young hot
- 37:18Speaker 2: one on the bike okay and um you could teach
- 37:23Speaker 2: forever And so where is.
- 37:25Speaker 1: Tell us some of the salacious stuff that we can
- 37:28Speaker 1: look forward to.
- 37:29Speaker 2: So, I mean, for me personally, I find the details
- 37:33Speaker 2: of the training program to be... That's the thing that
- 37:37Speaker 2: years ago I was so obsessed with. Like, what is
- 37:40Speaker 2: going on?
- 37:41Speaker 1: At least with these people, though, they were making good money.
- 37:45Speaker 2: Yes.
- 37:45Speaker 1: So no one felt... That's not an element of this.
- 37:48Speaker 2: Until they sold to Equinox.
- 37:52Speaker 1: Oh. Then.
- 37:53Speaker 2: The founders, when they say we're zeroing in, I'm like,
- 37:57Speaker 2: the spin instructor gets fucked. She's out.
- 38:00Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 38:00Speaker 2: So the two who are known to be like the
- 38:02Speaker 2: beloved heroes, Julie Rice and Elizabeth Cutler, they are known
- 38:07Speaker 2: as the founders, even though there is this secret third co-founder, whatever.
- 38:12Speaker 1: They are beloved. Okay. Beloved.
- 38:15Speaker 2: And they eventually, there was kind of a culture war
- 38:19Speaker 2: between SoulCycle and Equinox. Equinox is a behemoth. And very
- 38:25Speaker 2: different politics. There was a culture war between the two.
- 38:32Speaker 2: And that was when they left and sold for $ 90 million.
- 38:35Speaker 2: Equinox takes over and now you've got that corporate trickle down.
- 38:41Speaker 2: Their pay, they're no longer being paid what they were.
- 38:46Speaker 2: Like I had stories of instructors saying how by the
- 38:50Speaker 2: time they left, they were making less than half. of
- 38:54Speaker 2: what they were making at their height. People had their
- 38:58Speaker 2: pay structures changed like four times. Like the way Equinox ran,
- 39:04Speaker 2: they just weren't compatible. It wasn't compatible. It went from
- 39:07Speaker 2: this small homegrown company that was about, that was also,
- 39:12Speaker 2: by the way, very gay. The company, like they're all
- 39:15Speaker 2: performers and dancers and actors. Like these are why they
- 39:19Speaker 2: were so charismatic and why they could like, they knew
- 39:22Speaker 2: how to perform.
- 39:24Speaker 1: And were there soul cycles like all over America popping up?
- 39:28Speaker 1: And could you, were they ever frantic? Like could I
- 39:31Speaker 1: have opened one?
- 39:32Speaker 2: No, that was why they sold to Equinox. They had
- 39:35Speaker 2: an initial partnership with Equinox to bring them to LA
- 39:38Speaker 2: because eventually, there's this weird thing with entrepreneurship or with like, yeah,
- 39:43Speaker 2: with entrepreneurship where in my research for this, there comes
- 39:47Speaker 2: a point where suddenly you need, like, $ 100 million. Like,
- 39:51Speaker 2: in order to grow, you need, like, an enormous influx
- 39:54Speaker 2: of cash. So they did this initial partnership with Equinox,
- 39:59Speaker 2: and that's how they were able to open, like, L.A.
- 40:01Speaker 2: And then there were studios, like, Beverly Hills, like, all
- 40:03Speaker 2: over L.A. And then Equinox wanted it on, like, every...
- 40:10Speaker 2: It went from being, like, the restaurant you couldn't get
- 40:12Speaker 2: into to, like, Applebee's. So, yeah, once you're in Michigan,
- 40:19Speaker 2: I mean, with all due respect, but, like, once you're in, like,
- 40:22Speaker 2: the suburbs of Virginia, it's no longer– it lost that–
- 40:29Speaker 2: there was an exclusivity factor. And, like, celebrity– if you
- 40:32Speaker 2: want the Kelly Ripa. Yeah.
- 40:33Speaker 1: Yeah, like, it became known, like– Like, how did you– but, like,
- 40:37Speaker 1: when you say it was sell it out, how– was it, like,
- 40:39Speaker 1: impossible to get in? Oh, yeah. Would you have to,
- 40:41Speaker 1: like– Yes. Like, how would you sign up? Then would
- 40:45Speaker 1: some people– be like a vip and they could get
- 40:48Speaker 1: in or what was.
- 40:49Speaker 2: It so you you would have like your regular and
- 40:52Speaker 2: and they also soul cycle also um they invented the
- 40:57Speaker 2: paper class model what's that like you literally pay like
- 41:01Speaker 2: 34 dollars per class you can't like there's no membership
- 41:04Speaker 2: got it you can buy like a 10 pack and
- 41:06Speaker 2: like maybe you're saving two dollars but like okay it's
- 41:09Speaker 2: a paper class model so Very early on, Kelly Ripa,
- 41:14Speaker 2: and I credit Kelly Ripa and I think they would too.
- 41:17Speaker 2: Kelly Ripa was the first person on, who like had
- 41:21Speaker 2: a television show talking about SoulCycle and her favorite instructor
- 41:25Speaker 2: every day. She would have the bikes at live, you know,
- 41:30Speaker 2: the live with, I guess, Kelly and whoever.
- 41:34Speaker 1: Regis, Michael, whoever the people are.
- 41:36Speaker 2: And she was really responsible for, I mean, the power
- 41:42Speaker 2: of television like it yeah it became this like cultural
- 41:45Speaker 2: awareness and even in the early days it would like
- 41:49Speaker 2: Brooke Shields was right.
- 41:50Speaker 1: She truly is a spinner she's a spinner yeah but
- 41:54Speaker 1: yeah like it was always known to be this like celebrity.
- 41:59Speaker 2: That cloud of like Chelsea Clinton was always riding and
- 42:02Speaker 2: Brooke Shields Kelly Ripa Tiki Barber yeah all these Kira
- 42:07Speaker 2: Sedgwick like all these people in New York, just like
- 42:10Speaker 2: New York, Katie Couric was a big one too.
- 42:13Speaker 4: Wow.
- 42:13Speaker 1: So people just want to be where they are.
- 42:15Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 42:16Speaker 1: They'd be next to be spinning next to that.
- 42:18Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 42:19Speaker 1: And then we're like, and.
- 42:20Speaker 2: Yes, you could, what you said before about, could you
- 42:23Speaker 2: pay more? Yes. So the, the other side of it
- 42:26Speaker 2: is the writers or all these like, imagine like, Oh,
- 42:29Speaker 2: you know, who's banned from soul cycle? Sonia Morgan. That
- 42:33Speaker 2: gets revealed. Why?
- 42:36Speaker 1: What happened?
- 42:37Speaker 2: Because she was, She was making out with her boyfriend
- 42:41Speaker 2: in the front row and like talking really loudly during class.
- 42:44Speaker 1: Wait, were you before class or as the class was going?
- 42:46Speaker 2: During class. I don't know.
- 42:48Speaker 1: On the bikes they were making out?
- 42:49Speaker 5: Yes.
- 42:50Speaker 2: How can you reach over?
- 42:51Speaker 1: How can you even fit?
- 42:53Speaker 2: No, you're very close together. The bikes are.
- 42:55Speaker 1: And so they're like doing it and she stops pedaling
- 42:57Speaker 1: to make out.
- 42:58Speaker 2: I wasn't there, but the instructor told me.
- 43:00Speaker 1: So this is pre-Housewives or you don't know? No, no, no, no.
- 43:03Speaker 2: This is Housewives. Housewives is happening. And so- The studio
- 43:07Speaker 2: manager like went over and was like, hey, after the
- 43:11Speaker 2: class was like, hey, listen, like if you're in the
- 43:12Speaker 2: front row, like no talking, like we're trying to like
- 43:15Speaker 2: really like follow what's going on in the class. And
- 43:17Speaker 2: she pulled the like, do you know who I am?
- 43:19Speaker 2: And threw a huge, and then she was banned.
- 43:22Speaker 1: She's banned from that other restaurant. I know. What's the
- 43:24Speaker 1: name of the restaurant? I can't remember.
- 43:26Speaker 2: Oh, it's in NoHo, which is an area of New York. Yeah.
- 43:30Speaker 1: And then the next week I talked about this, but
- 43:31Speaker 1: I got a little more info. Allegedly- She threw some
- 43:36Speaker 1: fit at a restaurant. She said she was helping some
- 43:39Speaker 1: elderly woman at a restaurant who was not feeling well.
- 43:43Speaker 1: And then the ambulance came. And then she was allegedly
- 43:50Speaker 1: acting so bizarre and weird that they were like, either
- 43:54Speaker 1: you come in the ambulance with us or we're going
- 43:58Speaker 1: to have to call the police. So the story is
- 44:01Speaker 1: then she just went in the ambulance. which sometimes can happen.
- 44:05Speaker 1: Like either you're at, you know, and then you have
- 44:07Speaker 1: to pay for that, you know, ambulance ride and everything.
- 44:09Speaker 1: But at least you're not like, don't have a mugshot
- 44:13Speaker 1: for being like, you can just say, well, you know,
- 44:16Speaker 1: like why are you acting so weird? I don't know.
- 44:18Speaker 1: I better just go to the hospital versus like being
- 44:20Speaker 1: crazy and then having that thing on your record. But yeah. So,
- 44:26Speaker 1: but you know, she's a good time. So she gets banned.
- 44:30Speaker 1: That's amazing. She was banned.
- 44:31Speaker 2: I mean, there were all these like, It truly, it
- 44:35Speaker 2: was like the real housewives.
- 44:37Speaker 1: Wait, how did you, sorry, how could you then get
- 44:41Speaker 1: so that you would get in the class? Like you
- 44:43Speaker 1: could call?
- 44:43Speaker 2: Like a priority.
- 44:43Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 44:44Speaker 2: So the classes would all, I mean, this is to
- 44:46Speaker 2: this day.
- 44:47Speaker 1: How many were in each class? Isn't it small?
- 44:51Speaker 2: On average, on average, we'll say 50 bikes.
- 44:54Speaker 1: I mean, and everyone's sweating and it's hot in there.
- 44:56Speaker 1: Does this fucking smell like ass or what? Or the
- 44:59Speaker 1: candles smell good? And the candle's kind of a fire hazard.
- 45:04Speaker 2: You're making a lot of points.
- 45:06Speaker 1: That's why I never got into it. Didn't you have
- 45:11Speaker 1: to buy special shoes?
- 45:13Speaker 2: You have to, you clip into the bike.
- 45:15Speaker 1: Okay. All right. And so, like, I hate all this. Like, I, yeah.
- 45:24Speaker 1: Whenever someone tried to get me into it and just
- 45:26Speaker 1: say how fun things were, like, I just, I can't.
- 45:28Speaker 2: I mean, it had this.
- 45:31Speaker 2: It became, because you know what it was? When I was,
- 45:36Speaker 2: I used to like, I don't fucking get it. When
- 45:38Speaker 2: I was, here's the thing. Because I was really into fitness,
- 45:42Speaker 2: I would actually work, because remember when you asked me
- 45:45Speaker 2: something hilarious on the phone. I sent you the trailer.
- 45:48Speaker 2: There's a little peek behind the curtain. I sent Heather
- 45:50Speaker 2: the trailer. We get on the phone and you're like,
- 45:52Speaker 2: I gotta ask you a question. I have friends who spin.
- 45:57Speaker 2: Why do these women who spin not lose weight? And
- 46:00Speaker 2: that's a great, Because it raises the question of, is
- 46:04Speaker 2: this a good workout?
- 46:05Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 46:07Speaker 2: And the answer is. When you're just doing cardio.
- 46:15Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 46:16Speaker 2: If you are only doing cardio. Your body gets first.
- 46:22Speaker 2: It spikes a lot of cortisol, which is like the
- 46:24Speaker 2: stress hormone. So your body is like constantly in like
- 46:27Speaker 2: a fight or flight.
- 46:29Speaker 1: Situation.
- 46:31Speaker 2: And if you're not... Cardio doesn't change your body. It just, like,
- 46:37Speaker 2: burns sugar and, like, burns fat. Okay. And your body
- 46:41Speaker 2: adapts to the... You become a slave to that level
- 46:46Speaker 2: of cardio.
- 46:47Speaker 1: Oh, really?
- 46:48Speaker 2: So.
- 46:48Speaker 1: God, have I made some right choices in my life?
- 46:51Speaker 2: You have. You have. Because what I've learned is the
- 46:56Speaker 2: actual true secret to.
- 47:00Speaker 1: Being fit.
- 47:00Speaker 2: To being fit is you absolutely need to lift weights.
- 47:04Speaker 2: That's the thing that transforms the way you look. Yeah.
- 47:08Speaker 2: But you actually want to do the minimum amount of
- 47:12Speaker 2: cardio you need to stay where you are. Because you
- 47:17Speaker 2: don't want to be a slave to it.
- 47:19Speaker 1: Right.
- 47:19Speaker 2: Because then you're constantly chasing that. You're like circling the drain.
- 47:23Speaker 2: It's like.
- 47:24Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 47:25Speaker 2: It becomes a vicious cycle of like, oh, my God,
- 47:27Speaker 2: I got to I got to run off the like
- 47:29Speaker 2: who wants So if you're just like walking and also
- 47:32Speaker 2: spinning because it's so high intensity, it spikes your hunger.
- 47:37Speaker 2: So a lot of people who just do high intensity cardio,
- 47:42Speaker 2: they eat way more than you would eat if you
- 47:45Speaker 2: were to like lift weights or quite frankly, not work
- 47:48Speaker 2: out at all. Like just go for a walk.
- 47:50Speaker 1: Right.
- 47:50Speaker 2: It wouldn't spike your hunger. So you have to know
- 47:53Speaker 2: that delicate. If you get addicted to spin, like it's, it's,
- 47:59Speaker 2: Your body isn't going to look the way. It's not
- 48:03Speaker 2: going to transform your body.
- 48:04Speaker 1: So did anybody start to, like, realize that after, like,
- 48:08Speaker 1: losing three years of their life in this smelly room? Oh, that?
- 48:11Speaker 1: Did anyone, like, start to, like, go, oh, my God,
- 48:14Speaker 1: I never really lost weight. I never really got fit. Like,
- 48:17Speaker 1: I actually stayed the same amount.
- 48:19Speaker 2: You know, instructors I talked to told me, former SoulCycle
- 48:24Speaker 2: instructors told me that they actually gained weight. Teaching at Seoul.
- 48:29Speaker 1: What a fucking nightmare.
- 48:33Speaker 2: Because they didn't have time to, like, take other... Like,
- 48:37Speaker 2: they were teaching, like, 12, 16 classes a week. Yeah.
- 48:39Speaker 2: They didn't have time to, like, go to Barry's boot
- 48:41Speaker 2: camp and, like, lift weights or go to the gym.
- 48:43Speaker 1: There was no time.
- 48:44Speaker 2: And they were starving.
- 48:45Speaker 1: And did people... They were starving? Oh, yeah.
- 48:47Speaker 2: Well, they were hungry. Like, there was just how many, like,
- 48:49Speaker 2: shakes can you... Just because they're running around. There was
- 48:52Speaker 2: no time to really, like, take care of yourself.
- 48:54Speaker 1: And then... Were people then like fucking their trainers or spinners?
- 49:00Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. Yes.
- 49:02Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 49:03Speaker 5: Yes.
- 49:04Speaker 1: And then does that get you kicked out?
- 49:06Speaker 2: No, that's celebrated kind of.
- 49:07Speaker 1: Oh, really? A little bit.
- 49:09Speaker 2: The bad behavior.
- 49:10Speaker 1: Was there ever like someone knowing, like was there ever
- 49:12Speaker 1: some housewife that was fucking like a straight trainer who that, oh,
- 49:16Speaker 1: you know.
- 49:16Speaker 2: No, a woman was served divorce papers on her handlebars.
- 49:20Speaker 2: because she was fucking her SoulCycle instructor. That's a legendary story.
- 49:24Speaker 1: And they got, oh my God.
- 49:25Speaker 2: Can you imagine? She was served divorce papers on the handlebars.
- 49:32Speaker 2: Clipped in.
- 49:33Speaker 1: Did she finish the class? Her feet were clipped in.
- 49:37Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 49:37Speaker 1: Did she finish the class?
- 49:39Speaker 2: Let's say yes and.
- 49:41Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 49:43Speaker 1: Oh, my God. Well, okay. Well, everybody can listen to it.
- 49:47Speaker 2: I mean, it's juicy. If I don't know, I mean,
- 49:50Speaker 2: it's a lot.
- 49:51Speaker 1: Yeah, we're going to listen to it. I wanted to
- 49:53Speaker 1: talk a little bit about, this is from the Real
- 49:55Speaker 1: Housewives Zone.
- 49:56Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 49:57Speaker 1: You know, let's talk a little bit about that you
- 49:59Speaker 1: are a New Yorker. Give the people some Bravo juice.
- 50:03Speaker 1: Real Housewives of New York had two seasons with this
- 50:07Speaker 1: brand new cast. And then there was talk that it
- 50:11Speaker 1: was being canceled. Then Andy goes, it's not being canceled.
- 50:14Speaker 1: I don't know where that's coming from. We are actively
- 50:17Speaker 1: talking to 10 different women who, to join the cast.
- 50:21Speaker 1: I don't know if that means, you know, of that,
- 50:24Speaker 1: it's going to be a brand new cast of seven,
- 50:26Speaker 1: if they're going to keep one or two, what that means.
- 50:30Speaker 1: But he definitely was saying like, New York is not
- 50:32Speaker 1: dead and buried as we know it. So what is
- 50:35Speaker 1: your thoughts, scoop, theories?
- 50:39Speaker 2: I mean, I've been shouting from the rooftops the thing
- 50:43Speaker 2: that now everybody says, which is that they should move
- 50:46Speaker 2: Lindsay Hubbard over from Summer House. Yeah. I've always loved
- 50:51Speaker 2: Summer House. I mean, I love Vanderpump, too. But Summer House,
- 50:55Speaker 2: because it's the Hamptons, it's New York. I've always loved
- 50:58Speaker 2: that show. And I think if they moved Lindsay and Paige,
- 51:03Speaker 2: I mean, actually, here's my theory. I think if I
- 51:08Speaker 2: was producing it, I would move Lindsay, Paige, and Amanda
- 51:14Speaker 2: over and she would never do it. I would also
- 51:18Speaker 2: throw Hannah Burner in there because that's the only way
- 51:22Speaker 2: that there can be resolution in that friendship. You know
- 51:25Speaker 2: the Paige, Amanda, Hannah Burner?
- 51:27Speaker 1: But then where does that leave Summer House? Just get
- 51:29Speaker 1: all new younger people. Summer House should be a young thing.
- 51:34Speaker 1: I mean, it should be what it is. Like in
- 51:37Speaker 1: your 25 to 35, You share a house and summer house.
- 51:41Speaker 1: It should be like... It should be newer people. It
- 51:44Speaker 1: shouldn't be married couples. It shouldn't be people having kids.
- 51:48Speaker 1: It should be, you know.
- 51:48Speaker 2: I think you can keep... I think totally keep the
- 51:52Speaker 2: people like Sierra, of course, like West and Jessie.
- 51:55Speaker 1: And... But graduate the other people out.
- 51:59Speaker 2: Maybe Kyle and Amanda can still do it, but I
- 52:02Speaker 2: think there's a blending that could certainly work.
- 52:06Speaker 1: You know, I just... I think like, you know, with
- 52:09Speaker 1: Hannah and Paige, they're so successful doing their own thing.
- 52:14Speaker 1: But then I also think people get burnt out on
- 52:17Speaker 1: this too, on the podcasting, the touring and stuff. And
- 52:23Speaker 1: so I would say if the opportunity came up and
- 52:25Speaker 1: they were to ask me my opinion, maybe not Hannah,
- 52:28Speaker 1: but certainly Paige, I think it could be a really fun,
- 52:33Speaker 1: different thing to keep her going and, And she could
- 52:36Speaker 1: still do her thing with Hannah and to just keep,
- 52:40Speaker 1: to just keep doing it because you've already put it
- 52:42Speaker 1: all out there anyway. So it's not like a big,
- 52:46Speaker 1: that's what I was saying when I was interviewing these
- 52:48Speaker 1: two really young people that were on Vanderpump Villa, which
- 52:52Speaker 1: is on Hulu. I was like, now there was a
- 52:56Speaker 1: time when I would interview the, the original Vanderpump kids
- 53:00Speaker 1: and they were like, you know, we were scared to,
- 53:03Speaker 1: to take the leap and be on this show. They
- 53:05Speaker 1: had to really be convinced because they were all trying
- 53:08Speaker 1: to be actors. And at that time, their agents were like,
- 53:11Speaker 1: if you go on a reality show, then no one's
- 53:14Speaker 1: going to take you seriously when you come in for
- 53:16Speaker 1: a casting on a sitcom or a drama or whatever.
- 53:19Speaker 1: Now I feel like the industry is so weird that
- 53:25Speaker 1: it's a great move to go be on a reality show.
- 53:27Speaker 1: You're already putting your life out there on Snapchat and
- 53:31Speaker 1: TikTok and everything. And they don't care. There's no shame.
- 53:35Speaker 1: No one cares about what your body count is or
- 53:38Speaker 1: who your OnlyFans, whatever. So you might as well just like,
- 53:42Speaker 1: you know what I mean? Like the kids on Below Deck,
- 53:45Speaker 1: I'm always like, I can't believe there's like cameras in
- 53:47Speaker 1: those tiny rooms and we're actually like seeing you guys fuck. Like,
- 53:52Speaker 1: and you're still having to like, make pancakes in the morning. Like,
- 53:55Speaker 1: what is this? Why don't you just be a full
- 53:57Speaker 1: porn star? Like, I'm sometimes confused by it.
- 53:59Speaker 2: Let me ask you a question.
- 54:00Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 54:01Speaker 2: Okay. Who would you, if you were producing... Okay, I
- 54:05Speaker 2: gave you my, like, dream scenario.
- 54:06Speaker 1: Yes, I'll tell you, yeah.
- 54:08Speaker 2: What would you do if you were producing and casting this?
- 54:12Speaker 1: Well, I love the idea of, like, graduating a few
- 54:14Speaker 1: people over, like Lindsay and Paige. I think that would
- 54:19Speaker 1: really be good. And Amanda... But then I guess she
- 54:23Speaker 1: still has to deal with her husband. I don't know.
- 54:24Speaker 1: I'm not totally keyed into the summer house. So I
- 54:28Speaker 1: know it's super popular. But I know all the players.
- 54:31Speaker 1: Of these people. Who would you keep?
- 54:36Speaker 2: I know it's tough.
- 54:36Speaker 1: It really is. Definitely not Jenna Lyons. Sorry. I'm sorry.
- 54:44Speaker 2: Can I tell you something? I think I'm responsible for
- 54:48Speaker 2: getting our cat.
- 54:50Speaker 5: Why?
- 54:50Speaker 1: Tell me.
- 54:50Speaker 2: It's too long of a story.
- 54:52Speaker 1: I just didn't understand when she came and the fandom
- 54:57Speaker 1: over it, it was the same thing in the fandom
- 54:59Speaker 1: over SoulCycle. I was just like, I don't get why
- 55:02Speaker 1: everyone's like fucking losing their shit over the girl.
- 55:04Speaker 2: I was the one losing their shit.
- 55:06Speaker 1: Why? What is so amazing?
- 55:08Speaker 2: It doesn't translate. She's not made for real.
- 55:11Speaker 1: She... I just didn't think there was anything that like
- 55:16Speaker 1: she didn't... She wasn't... I mean, I think she's like
- 55:18Speaker 1: a fine person. You know, that's the thing. All of them... Nobody,
- 55:23Speaker 1: except for maybe Brynn, was really annoying. I didn't feel
- 55:26Speaker 1: like anybody was annoying. I don't feel like anybody's an
- 55:29Speaker 1: unintelligent person or anything. Just they weren't like silly or
- 55:34Speaker 1: fun to watch at all. They just weren't. And they
- 55:36Speaker 1: didn't have a history. They were cast. And then you
- 55:40Speaker 1: come into something this many years in and like you're
- 55:44Speaker 1: kind of making a bigger deal out of something or
- 55:46Speaker 1: the producers might be pushing you.
- 55:48Speaker 2: They almost need to find people You almost need to get, like,
- 55:53Speaker 2: 70-year-olds who have, like, never seen Housewife. You need to...
- 55:58Speaker 2: Who is the person who isn't self-producing and doesn't know
- 56:02Speaker 2: how to use Instagram and hasn't been watching 20 years of... Like,
- 56:08Speaker 2: who is that person? It's like, you have to go.
- 56:11Speaker 1: I don't even know how you do it. You know what?
- 56:13Speaker 2: That's why I'm saying, like, it's tough.
- 56:14Speaker 1: Because it's like The Valley, you know, I watch The
- 56:17Speaker 1: Valley and I like it. But after a while, like...
- 56:21Speaker 1: You are just watching people, like, break up and get divorced.
- 56:26Speaker 1: And sometimes it's a little too dark and a little
- 56:28Speaker 1: too sad and a little too real. I don't know. But,
- 56:31Speaker 1: I mean, I'll still watch it. I don't like Jessel
- 56:34Speaker 1: and her husband trying to be funny all the time.
- 56:36Speaker 1: So she can go. Sorry. Uba's super annoying, in my opinion.
- 56:42Speaker 1: Totally annoying. Oh, I'm the prettiest. I'm the best. I'm
- 56:45Speaker 1: the greatest, darling. You know, like, that was too much.
- 56:48Speaker 1: That wasn't funny.
- 56:49Speaker 2: We watched two seasons of her. And we know nothing
- 56:54Speaker 2: about her.
- 56:55Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 56:57Speaker 2: Why did they cast her?
- 56:59Speaker 1: Just because she's pretty and, like, whatever.
- 57:00Speaker 2: We know nothing.
- 57:01Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 57:01Speaker 1: Terrible. She was terrible. Psy, again, a cool chick. I
- 57:06Speaker 1: interviewed her. But, like, not particularly funny or anything on camera. Just, like,
- 57:11Speaker 1: not popping. I mean, when you think about what made
- 57:15Speaker 1: Real Housewives of New York, the original, so great, is
- 57:20Speaker 1: because they... We had been watching reality TV for 15 years.
- 57:24Speaker 1: They were women who were stars in their own mind.
- 57:28Speaker 1: They did lead an exceptional lifestyle that's unique to being
- 57:34Speaker 1: in New York. If you could make it here, you
- 57:36Speaker 1: could make it anywhere. New York is unique. You have
- 57:39Speaker 1: to be a badass. You have to either have come
- 57:42Speaker 1: from nothing and made it or come from something and
- 57:44Speaker 1: you're still making it. That's what we wanted to see
- 57:47Speaker 1: as people who don't live there. So you can't have
- 57:51Speaker 1: people just like moving there and doing nothing or being
- 57:55Speaker 1: like Leah McSweeney, who, again, there was, you know, nothing
- 57:59Speaker 1: really interesting. She wasn't wealthy. Like, I just. So I
- 58:03Speaker 1: don't know who to cast.
- 58:04Speaker 2: The reason why the original New York cast worked was
- 58:08Speaker 2: because they were all characters.
- 58:11Speaker 1: And they all knew each other. Jill put them all together.
- 58:15Speaker 2: Jill's a character. Luann is a character. Ramona is a
- 58:19Speaker 2: Bethany character. And the other ingredient is each of those people,
- 58:25Speaker 2: I mean, don't forget Alex McCord, is they all have
- 58:28Speaker 2: a level of delusion.
- 58:30Speaker 1: Right. You have to be, that's what I'm saying.
- 58:32Speaker 2: These are just like my neighbors.
- 58:34Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 58:35Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 58:36Speaker 1: Oh, the other thing I think that killed it is
- 58:39Speaker 1: they all were you know, everyone has to be on
- 58:42Speaker 1: social media. I get it. But if I was a producer,
- 58:46Speaker 1: I would say you're not doing your content. Like you're not,
- 58:50Speaker 1: what do you call it? Moonlighting. You're not going to
- 58:52Speaker 1: moonlight when you're filming, when you're filming, you're not taking
- 58:57Speaker 1: video of your outfits or any of that stuff. When
- 59:01Speaker 1: you guys are on camera, if you want, we can
- 59:05Speaker 1: have someone take some photos of your outfit at the end,
- 59:07Speaker 1: but like, give us your phone. check it every hour
- 59:11Speaker 1: like it's the phone thing that made oh my god
- 59:14Speaker 1: it like levitated yeah it's like sliding like um my
- 59:19Speaker 1: phone my drink was falling anyway um Yeah, I think
- 59:22Speaker 1: that's a big part. It's time. Following the lifestyle of
- 59:28Speaker 1: a social media brand person, it's not interesting. Zero. It's not, okay,
- 59:33Speaker 1: you've got to take three things of this and do
- 59:36Speaker 1: the ad. Okay, whatever. It's just not that juicy. It's
- 59:40Speaker 1: not like being on a movie set.
- 59:42Speaker 2: What do you think is the future of Andy?
- 59:44Speaker 1: Well, I don't think anybody wants to see someone else
- 59:49Speaker 1: take over the reunions. And, you know, the way he
- 59:54Speaker 1: does his thing is special. They had one time, remember
- 59:56Speaker 1: they had Nicki Minaj do one? Potomac. Potomac. I think
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: they were like testing out, like, could we have other
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: people do it? So I think we still need him
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: to do that. Watch What Happens Live is still fun.
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: I get that they get bigger stars and I think
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: that's great for the show. But I remember seeing that
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: those were the ones that actually don't do that well.
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: Oh, I know. It's all the housewives who do.
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: But I also think the influx of all the after shows,
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: like there's after shows of every show.
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: And then everyone has a podcast. So I don't think
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: like Watch What Happens Live is as valuable as it
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: was in like, oh, my God, we've got the two
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: people sitting here after they're seeing the episode for the
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: first time. How do they feel about it?
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: They've already filmed that after show a month ago.
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: And then they put them in the positions of asking
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: the really mean, snarky things. Like Joe Schmo from Beaver Creek,
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: you know, Ireland, says, why does your face look so different?
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: What kind of work did you have done? Like the mean,
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: like to get the snarky stuff out. And then it's
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: always like, well, you'll see in the show. I don't know.
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: So what's the future of it?
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't know. I think they do
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: a really good job. When I catch it, I like it.
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: But I just, yeah, I think that he should just
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: stay on the shows, maybe. I feel like he... Just
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: do the TV part.
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: Remember how, like, there was that rumor of, like, there
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: was an announcement that, there was an announcement coming, which
- 1:01:29Speaker 2: never came.
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: Right. In April, which I had heard, and I talked
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: about it, I said, I don't believe that he would
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: ever step down voluntarily, and I don't believe they would
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: get rid of him and replace him with who? The
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: guy that's, you know, that said the shitty stuff about
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: Shannon Bedore on... love hotel. I'm like, no, we don't
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: need a 30 year old that has no life experience
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: talking to these women. So I, I don't think there's
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: anyone that we'd want. So unless there was something horrible
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: salacious in which there was one of these things, like
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: we're going to do a mutual goodbye. I don't think
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: he would not do it. Dad or not. You can,
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: adjust it so like everything's done in three days and
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: you're home by six.
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: I think the only I think if there's an the
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: rumor I heard literally last night at dinner was the
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: announcement because like they didn't want to be scooped is
- 1:02:21Speaker 2: that they're gonna.
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: Juicy scooped like I did I guess yeah.
- 1:02:23Speaker 2: They they're gonna it's now gonna something maybe announced at
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: BravoCon we'll see if that happens but I truly think
- 1:02:30Speaker 2: that the The only sort of announcement would be that
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: he's no longer going to be the executive producer.
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: Why would... I don't believe that.
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: Really?
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: Because why... the only announcements that are going to have
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: at Bravo con have to be positive. Do you imagine
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: telling a group of alone? And by the way, we
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: have a big announcement next Bravo con. I won't be here. Like, no,
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: no way. It won't be anything negative. If there is a,
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: I feel like the announcement was all the shakeups of
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: the shows. Maybe, maybe there wasn't anything big. I don't
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: think he's going anywhere. I think he's going to continue
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: to do, um, You know, these things. But maybe he'll
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: scale back in other ways or something. I don't know.
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: He said on the radio last week that.
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: Maybe he won't do reunions, though. That would be a bummer.
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: That would be a real bummer.
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: And then they'll bring in Jill Combooster to host the reunion?
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: Please, no. No, that would suck to, you know... Yeah.
- 1:03:26Speaker 2: I think I'm the only person on Earth who hates
- 1:03:29Speaker 2: all reunions. I know that I'm in the minority. I
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: know people only watch them.
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: They definitely get dragged out too long, especially when the
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: season didn't really have that much going on. And so
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: much gets resolved, like, is sort of resolved by the
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: time they get there. Like, the only thing juicy out
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: of Beverly Hills is that Garcelle quit. Like, that was it. Like,
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: there was nothing else that came out of there that was, like,
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: an awe moment. We still didn't know if... Oh, so
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: what do you think as a lesbian?
- 1:03:58Speaker 6: What.
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: What do you think of Kyle? I go back and
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: forth every day. Not every day, probably every week. I
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: know that her daughter had an engagement party. I saw
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: a photo of her with some other housewives. I don't
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: know if Morgan Wade went. I don't know what's going
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: on there. What do you think?
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: I think she confirmed that they had, or that she.
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: She never confirmed anything. She has never said, Kyle has
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: never said, I... You know, Morgan and I were more
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: than friends, and who knows if we'll be more than
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: that later. She has never said that. She's hinted over it.
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: There was a reunion two years ago. She goes, who knows?
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: Maybe Morgan will be sitting next to me next year. Hint.
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: She then says Morgan doesn't want to be part of anything.
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: Then the last one was I had to talk to
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: my daughters about what was being said, but she still
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: never said, and, you know, like Kathy's laughing, she still
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: never said, I have been with a woman and I
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: like it.
- 1:04:59Speaker 2: You know what it is?
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: What is it?
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: Their relationship is unstable. So she can't. It's clear that
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: if she's not confirming anything, it's because their actual relationship.
- 1:05:12Speaker 2: She and Morgan. Or whatever the situation, the relationship just
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: in like viscerally, you know, the relationship is probably a
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: bit up and down and not in any kind of
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: solid we're friends or it's probably this weird gray area.
- 1:05:28Speaker 2: So what is there really to say?
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:05:32Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:05:33Speaker 2: Very common with women.
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: I don't really think they're romantic in a romantic thing anymore.
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: In my personal opinion, I don't. I think they did
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: have something in it.
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: Are they still dressing like Wayne's World?
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: No, and I think they're just kind of friends and,
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: you know, like, do you, so, like, Julie Goldman, who
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: is a lesbian, I was like, do, can lesbians stay
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: friends after they break up? That's the whole thing. Because
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: it seems like gay men can. Can women? I mean, obviously,
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: these are general statements.
- 1:06:06Speaker 2: Generally speaking, every lesbian's, like, Best her crew of three
- 1:06:12Speaker 2: best friends or her exes.
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: OK, so it can happen. No, that's like usually the
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: way it works. Oh, I thought it was the opposite. No.
- 1:06:19Speaker 2: And in fact. One of my really good friends, like
- 1:06:24Speaker 2: over in January, she's like, I have to tell you, like,
- 1:06:26Speaker 2: we're getting divorced. What if she and her wife, they're
- 1:06:30Speaker 2: already like on Instagram, it's kind of nuts to watch,
- 1:06:34Speaker 2: like besties, my sister, wife. I'm like, this is embarrassing stuff.
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: She's calling her ex-wife now her sister-wife?
- 1:06:40Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: Something like that. I'll show you after. It's weird.
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: Hopefully she's not watching. But yes.
- 1:06:46Speaker 5: Okay.
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: Does Erin stay? I think so. Erin Brynn?
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: I think Erin's great. Erin gives me that Jewish New Yorker.
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: She's that influx of the Jills, Erin, Bethany. She feels familiar.
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: I just felt like I still watched it. I liked
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: their outfits. I love a New York background. They're all
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: very gorgeous. I just, it felt like sometimes when I
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: watch these shows, it is work because I talk about them.
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: But I mean, I'd be falling asleep. I couldn't get
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: through it. I think I just kind of, my guess
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: would be that actually none of them are going to
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: come back.
- 1:07:26Speaker 2: The reason I react that way.
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: And I'm not saying I want it to. I just
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: have a feeling.
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: So the reason why I react that way, like sort
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: of like surprise, is because that would be... Bravo admitting
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: that it failed.
- 1:07:40Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: And they were clinging to the idea of, like, it working. Unless, like,
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: maybe they can be cool and be like, the audience
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: was right. It didn't work. We're going to try again. But, like,
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: can they do that?
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: That's so. Okay. If they keep two, I think it
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: will just be Aaron and Psy.
- 1:08:00Speaker 6: Okay.
- 1:08:01Speaker 2: My guess, if they keep two, it's going to be
- 1:08:03Speaker 2: Aaron and Jessel. Okay.
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: Okay. definitely definitely Erin can be kept because she's like
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: normal and keeps it moving yeah and she's super pretty
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: so yeah all right well if you're looking for a
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: juicy can you just look at Alec Baldwin oh my
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: god Alec Baldwin was there with Hilaria so that's funny
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: at on SoulCycle look at this girl in the back.
- 1:08:25Speaker 2: Okay that's not her what if I was like what
- 1:08:28Speaker 2: if I didn't know I'm like oh my god that's
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: me um So at a studio in the Hamptons, the
- 1:08:33Speaker 2: East Hampton studio, something that was cool about soul is
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: like they'd always like try stuff. It was very like
- 1:08:38Speaker 2: culture of yes. So they would like do random stuff.
- 1:08:40Speaker 2: So you know how Eladia was a yoga instructor?
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: Yes.
- 1:08:43Speaker 2: So at the East Hampton studio, the basement, she was like, oh,
- 1:08:47Speaker 2: I want to teach yoga here. And so for like
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: a summer, she just had a pop-up like yoga thing
- 1:08:52Speaker 2: in the basement of the soul cycle.
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: And did people come? Yeah.
- 1:08:55Speaker 2: It was just like random and weird.
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: I remember that. And was she speaking in a Spanish
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: accent back then?
- 1:09:01Speaker 6: Of course.
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: Oh, back then she was. And did you think she
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: was from Spain? Yeah.
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: Leonardo and my children.
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: Leonardo who? DiCaprio?
- 1:09:11Speaker 2: No, Leonardo. Doesn't one of her kids named Leonardo?
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: Oh, yes, yes, yes, yes.
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: That was the name. Carmen and Leonardo. Yes.
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: Oh, okay.
- 1:09:20Speaker 2: Just that image, for some reason, I find this photo
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: to be so funny. The visual of Alec Baldwin struggling
- 1:09:28Speaker 2: through one of these classes, to me, is just very funny.
- 1:09:30Speaker 2: I don't know why. So that's why I sent that.
- 1:09:32Speaker 2: It's so funny.
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: Well, yeah, she's doing fine in life. Hilaria. And, yeah,
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: she just says she has like a coding problem where
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: she just goes back and forth to thinking she's Spanish
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: or I don't know. She never really explained it. Never,
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: you know. Hilaria, Blake Lively, Sherry Papini. Who else could
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: they all hang out with? Meghan Markle.
- 1:10:00Speaker 2: Oh, are you casting the show?
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm just calling those, all those weirdos could get together.
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: All the like, the misfits of New York City.
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: Yeah, kind of liars. I don't know. I know that
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: she was always being talked about to join that Housewives,
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: but got her own show instead, which is probably what
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: he would have wanted. So, Everybody, if you're looking for
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: a juicy thing and you lived this life or never
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: lived it, thank God you didn't. It's called A Body

- 1:10:50Speaker 2: with the clients yelling about like, why am I in a,
- 1:10:52Speaker 2: why do you move my bike? I should be on
- 1:10:54Speaker 2: bike six, like yelling all like sort of dealing with
