- 0:00What would you recommend for somebody who lets assume that somebody wants to start their
- 0:15own business to reinvest in themselves?
- 0:20You said, okay, you have frugal living tips, but is that the best way is it to save money
- 0:26first or is it just to start investing, start a side hustle?
- 0:32First of all, is mindset locked in?
- 0:34What do they do next to build their own thing?
- 0:37Perfect.
- 0:38Great question, Scott.
- 0:39So, I think before even thinking about money at all, for me at least, what worked well
- 0:44was finding a mentor.
- 0:46For me, my mentor helped, he was probably like six decades older than me.
- 0:52Very well seasoned, executive, I was very fortunate to meet him and he taught me some of the
- 1:01basic steps that I would need to work and focus on in order to build a successful business
- 1:06down the road.
- 1:08So that includes looking at finances, but not just finances.
- 1:12Figuring out how to interact with prospects, figuring out how to hold myself in conversations
- 1:21in the boardroom, whatever it is.
- 1:23So I think finding a mentor in your area, whatever it is, if it's a blog, if it's actually
- 1:28building a brick and mortar business, find a mentor who's willing to give you the time
- 1:33and help you literally jump ahead of the rest of the game because I personally think that
- 1:38mentors are the ultimate shortcut in life.
- 1:41They can give you so much advice and help you save time, energy, and money.
- 1:46So that's number one.
- 1:47And then number two, when it comes to money, yes, so I would probably recommend starting
- 1:53off at paying off high interest debt, so like credit card debt, right?
- 1:56So I mean, definitely don't live with high interest debt.
- 2:01The second thing then is yes, focusing on investing in the stock market, for example, I'm
- 2:07a big believer in just investing in low-cost index funds.
- 2:11So very passive, yes, I do know a lot more stock market terminology, but for my own personal
- 2:18purposes, I just do a dollar cost averaging strategy, which is automatic.
- 2:24It's a set amount of money over a very long period of time for me.
- 2:28It's going to be like four, five, six decades down the road, investing and sticking to that
- 2:33strategy.
- 2:34That's my ultimate plan.
- 2:36But I think it even boils down to simpler terms.
- 2:39It's just quite simply spend less than you earn.
- 2:43And I think, you know, it becoming a millionaire or a hundred thousandaire, whatever the goal
- 2:49is in your personal life, it really just comes down to spend less than you earn.
- 2:54It's that simple and anything that, oh, go ahead.
- 2:57And now I was going to say, where do people spend and waste the most money?
- 3:02Oh, yes.
- 3:03I think number one is cars, especially newer cars.
- 3:08I'm just going like, oh, just thinking, oh, maybe, yeah, she's not wrong.
- 3:15I mean, yes, cars are, I mean, I myself, actually, I love cars.
- 3:18I'm a big car geek.
- 3:20I love everything about cars, especially racing, all of that type of stuff.
- 3:25So I'm definitely into that, but I do know that if you want to focus on building your wealth,
- 3:33especially in the long term, it's probably not a good idea to spend money on depreciating
- 3:38assets.
- 3:39Now, I know not all cars are depreciating assets.
- 3:41I know that there are some luxury cars out there that probably appreciate, but it probably
- 3:46takes a couple hundred thousand to buy them.
- 3:50So, yes, not the average Toyota, that's right.
- 3:56So definitely stay away from brand new cars.
- 3:59I think they depreciate the second you drive them off the parking car law, actually.
- 4:04So stay away from that.
- 4:06The second thing that I see a lot of people overspend money on is actually subscription
- 4:10services.
- 4:11If you look through your budget and take a look at how much recurring money that comes
- 4:18off of your credit card, for example, so we're talking Spotify, Netflix, any other subscription
- 4:24service, it actually adds up over the long term.
- 4:27And what I like to do is add up your subscription services over one month.
- 4:32So let's say it costs you 30 bucks for all of your subscription services.
- 4:36Okay.
- 4:37Multiply that over a year, right?
- 4:40So that's 360.
- 4:41And then multiply that by 10 years.
- 4:43That's 3,600 bucks.
- 4:44Right?
- 4:45So if you look at it in the long term, what could you do with 3,600 bucks?
- 4:50Like, a lot of different things.
- 4:52So again, it's all about looking in the long term and it will change your life.
- 4:58You're sort of like living, you know, you eat your own dogs, you're living all the things
- 5:02that you teach over entrepreneurship.
- 5:04But now let's go into the millennial portion.
- 5:06You've owned your own home since 23.
- 5:09These are all smart things.
- 5:10So okay, let's start it off, millennial money myths.
- 5:13What are some?
- 5:14All right.
- 5:15Let's go for it.
- 5:16So it's actually say the number one millennial money myths I've heard over and over again
- 5:20is that to be successful in America, you have to own a home.
- 5:24And I know it's really funny coming from a home owner, but honestly, I'm going to be,
- 5:29you know, totally honest about it.
- 5:31It is not all what it's out to be.
- 5:32It's really not.
- 5:33Home ownership might not be right for you.
- 5:36And that's totally fine.
- 5:37Like, you do not need to own a, you know, $300,000 or whatever it is at home in order to
- 5:42be considered, you know, you've made it.
- 5:45And honestly, it's because of liquidity, you know, again, the house isn't necessarily
- 5:49liquid like a bank account.
- 5:51You have super high initial costs, right?
- 5:53You talk about a preferably at least 20% down payment of your home.
- 5:57You got inspectors fees, not to mention all of the maintenance and the repair work that
- 6:02has to be done.
- 6:03Like, I have an air conditioner that's about to go yesterday.
- 6:06We had a pretty bad thunderstorm actually.
- 6:08So I was really worried.
- 6:10I turned it off.
- 6:11I'm like, no, please don't hit my air conditioner.
- 6:15The plumbing, I mean, I have plumbing issues too.
- 6:18So I went through probably a couple of hours on YouTube myself, you know, try to save
- 6:23money, figure out plumbing issues, which is not a good site.
- 6:27So no, it's not always, you know, amazing and you do not need a house apartment lifestyle
- 6:31or condo lifestyle or whatever it is that you want is definitely okay if that's what works
- 6:37for your lifestyle.
- 6:38So that's number one, you don't need a house to be successful.
- 6:42Number two, an excuse I often hear is that I don't earn enough money in order to invest
- 6:48today and I'll do it tomorrow.
- 6:49So that is, I think, honestly, like I said, it's an excuse.
- 6:54And the real reason behind it is because thanks to modern technology like investment platforms
- 7:01such as M1 Finance, you got a corn, so you got, I think Robin Hood, you got stash, you
- 7:07know, the list goes on.
- 7:09There's something called fractional investing.
- 7:11And what fractional investing is is that you don't need $3,000 to buy one share in Amazon.
- 7:17You literally can have five bucks and you can already be a fractional owner of Amazon
- 7:23and also in Apple, et cetera, et cetera.
- 7:26So no, you don't need hundreds or thousands of dollars to start investing.
- 7:30You can literally start with five bucks and I'm pretty sure everyone can do that.
- 7:35So no marks uses there.
- 7:37And the third one that I hear very often is, honestly, it's about life insurance.
- 7:43I hear that life insurance is a total waste of money.
- 7:46And I get it because I think that life insurance has gotten a pretty bad rap over the last
- 7:53couple of years because of, you know, sleazy life insurance salesmen.
- 7:57They try to push their products on you in exchange for pretty nice commissions.
- 8:03And typically speaking though, there are two types of life insurance products.
- 8:07There's one called a term life insurance product, which is like the simplest, the cheapest
- 8:11form of life insurance.
- 8:12And it's often recommended for millennials.
- 8:15And then there's something called a cash value life insurance.
- 8:18And that's kind of like an umbrella terminology, which covers whole life insurance universal
- 8:24life.
- 8:25The list goes on and on.
- 8:26And what's a cash value life insurance product?
- 8:29That's typically what's pushed onto millennials.
- 8:32Those are expensive.
- 8:33Those are permanent.
- 8:35And typically speaking, they don't match a millennial lifestyle.
- 8:38So anyway, long story short, life insurance isn't always a waste of money.
- 8:42If you have a family, if you have people depending on you for income, if you have a big liability,
- 8:48like a mortgage and you have a spouse, for example, that might need your help down the road.
- 8:54A term life insurance policy could actually help.
- 8:56You can get half a million dollars, a million dollars of death benefit for 30 bucks a month.
- 9:02You know, it's not that bad.
- 9:03So that's the last myth that I hear very often.
- 9:07Yeah.
