- 0:00Welcome back to Fostering Faith. Happy New Year,
- 0:03guys. And so we are so glad that you have came
- 0:05back for a new season. We did take a break off
- 0:09for a couple of weeks for the holidays and just
- 0:11to reset and get everything kind of squared away.
- 0:14And so we can go into this next year. And so
- 0:17this episode, we are going to call Holy Habits
- 0:19That Last. And so the January tone, I think,
- 0:22is going to be more fresh start and deep reflection.
- 0:25And so if you are new to to Fostering Faith,
- 0:28welcome. We are a podcast that doesn't have it
- 0:31all together. We are figuring out in the community
- 0:33and we are walking together. And so if you are
- 0:36returning listener, thank you for coming back
- 0:38home and let's get ready for a new season. And
- 0:42so I'm so excited to start this brand new year
- 0:44with you. There is some things about January
- 0:46that felt like a clean page, a fresh chapter.
- 0:49Maybe a holy reset, not because the calendar
- 0:51magically changed anything, but because sometimes
- 0:54we need a moment that reminds us that God still
- 0:57writes new beginnings. He still invites us to
- 1:00grow. He still calls us to be formed more and
- 1:03more into the image of Christ. And today we're
- 1:05going to be talking with and about something
- 1:09both simple and incredibly powerful. Holy habits
- 1:13that last. And so now listen, we're not talking
- 1:16about New Year's resolutions. We are not talking
- 1:18about wish lists. We're not talking about the
- 1:21kind of goals that we wrote down on January 1st
- 1:23and abandoned on January 20th. I'm talking about
- 1:26the quiet, consistent daily rhythms that shape
- 1:31your soul. And if you've ever listened to me,
- 1:34consistency, the things that we choose on purpose
- 1:37because God uses them to mold you, to strengthen
- 1:40you and to grow you. These are the habits that
- 1:43actually change your life. The ones that transform
- 1:45you over time because they are rooted in Christ
- 1:48and not willpower. And today I want to talk and
- 1:51walk through how we build on them and why they
- 1:55matter and how to make them stick when life gets
- 1:58busy, chaotic, and overwhelming. And so let's
- 2:03start with this. And so Matthew seven, Jesus
- 2:05talks with two builders, one builder on the rock,
- 2:08one builds on the sand. And we actually just
- 2:10went over this in scripture the other day for
- 2:13a class. And so it was you have two builders,
- 2:16two houses. And then we had you have two roads
- 2:19to choose. And then there is what Jesus says.
- 2:22He says, when the storm hits both houses, the
- 2:24wind and the rain and the flood, hard seasons
- 2:27are going to come for both. The only difference
- 2:30is and was the foundation, the one that stood
- 2:34firm and the one that fell. And I want you to
- 2:38hear this at the start of the year. The strength
- 2:40of your life is not dependent upon your storms
- 2:43you face because storms are going to come. It
- 2:46is determined by what you build. on before the
- 2:50storm ever comes. And so what's your preparation
- 2:53for the storm? And so you see all those people
- 2:55like in Florida and like wherever hurricanes
- 2:57happen and things of that nature, they board
- 2:59up their houses. They get prepared. They know
- 3:00the storm is coming. They see it on the horizon.
- 3:03But in life, you don't know. We don't have a
- 3:05meteorologist and say, hey, you're going to have
- 3:07a break up with your boyfriend on Tuesday. Hey,
- 3:09you're going to get a divorce in six months from
- 3:11now. Sometimes we have those things, but a lot
- 3:14of times we don't. And so we don't know when
- 3:16the storms are going to hit. a sudden death,
- 3:18a sudden breakup, a sudden loss of job or whatever.
- 3:21And so those storms in life sometimes are unpredictable.
- 3:24But what did we do when the storm wasn't here?
- 3:28Are we rooted in what these holy habits are?
- 3:31And so that is the power of the holy habits.
- 3:33Whenever we choose to build our life on prayer,
- 3:36on scripture, on worship, on obedience, on intentional
- 3:42time with God, you build the foundation for the
- 3:45storm. You're not waiting for the crisis. You're
- 3:48not waiting for fear to hit. You are waiting
- 3:52on nothing. You are not waiting for anxiety to
- 3:57knock you over. You are building now so that
- 4:00whenever life gets real, you can stand. And it's
- 4:05just like whenever you have your paycheck, you
- 4:06save for what? Don't even know you're just putting
- 4:09some money away and so you're putting scripture
- 4:11away on your house because someday you're gonna
- 4:13need that You're gonna you're building on the
- 4:15promises of what God because there's gonna be
- 4:17some days that you can't even remember your own
- 4:18name But you can remember the promises that he
- 4:21has put on your heart and you know what holy
- 4:24habits are not glamorous They're not loud and
- 4:27most people will never clap for you because you
- 4:30spent ten minutes in the word But these quiet
- 4:34rhythms become the difference between a year
- 4:36that collapses the year that stands firm. And
- 4:40so let's talk about these three holy habits that's
- 4:42gonna last. They're not flashy, they're not complicated,
- 4:46but they are powerful. And so number one, time
- 4:52in the word. And I have said this and said this
- 4:54on this podcast, and you've heard numerous of
- 4:56people talk about time in the word. And so Psalm
- 4:59119 says, Word is the lamp to my feet and the
- 5:03light to my path, not my feelings, not my emotions,
- 5:06not my opinions. The word of God is the light,
- 5:10lights the path. That means everything might
- 5:13be foggy, confusing, or even loud, but scripture
- 5:16reveals truth and direction. You can't grow in
- 5:22Christ if you do not sit with Christ. You cannot
- 5:25sit with Christ if you never open the book he
- 5:28breathed out. Open your Bible. read the word,
- 5:32read scripture. I cannot make it just any more
- 5:37plainer than that. Just read your Bible and then
- 5:40make sure that you get a version of the Bible
- 5:42that you guys like. And so make sure that if
- 5:45you like reading King James, read King James.
- 5:48If you like NIV, read NIV. If you need NLT, read
- 5:51NLT. There are so many different versions out
- 5:54there. There is something out there for everybody.
- 5:58And so what What I want is a simple goal for
- 6:02January. And so just like with my patients in
- 6:05clinic, I don't start with any fame fancy. If
- 6:06you're gonna come in here to lose weight, we're
- 6:08gonna start with your diet. We're gonna start
- 6:09with one thing at a time and then build on that.
- 6:12And so I want you to start simple. Not even an
- 6:15hour a day. Not five chapters a day. Not reading
- 6:17the Bible plan in a year. Just a daily touch
- 6:20point. If it's for you, one chapter is what you
- 6:24want, then do one chapter. If it's ten verses,
- 6:27do ten verses. If it's one psalm, one proverb,
- 6:31something small but consistent is better than
- 6:36reading five minutes every day, than once an
- 6:40hour, once a week. Because consistency changes
- 6:43you. Consistency roots you. Consistency forms
- 6:49you. Holy habits are about showing up, not perfection,
- 6:55not performance. Just presents. If you went to
- 7:00the gym or if you started a diet, if you just
- 7:03ate good once a week and had trash the rest of
- 7:07the week, are you ever gonna see change? No.
- 7:09If you go to the gym once and do one curl a week,
- 7:12are you gonna see change in the bicep? No. If
- 7:15you do one sit -up, are you gonna see abs? No.
- 7:18You have to be consistent with everything. If
- 7:21you want to keep your job, you consistently have
- 7:22to show up on time. If you want to save money,
- 7:25you consistently have to put money in the bank
- 7:27and spend less on what you're making. Consistency
- 7:30pays off. Number two, prayer that is honest and
- 7:38real. Bolivians 4, 6 says, Do not be anxious
- 7:40about anything, but in everything by prayer and
- 7:43petition, present your request to God. I want
- 7:47to hear I want you to hear this. Prayer is not
- 7:51performance. Prayer is not fancy words. Prayer
- 7:55is not a ceremony. Prayer is relationship. God
- 8:00wants honesty. He wants truth. He wants you to
- 8:05come exactly as you are, not as you think you
- 8:08should be. And yes, is he holy? Yes. Is he your
- 8:13father? Yes. Is he Abba? Yes. And so he already
- 8:18knows, but he wants you to come to him and trust
- 8:20him. Talk to him like you would talk to your
- 8:22best friend. Talk to him. Jesus gives us a way
- 8:24to go into prayer. Dear Heavenly Father, hallow
- 8:28be thy name. So he, in scripture, as you have
- 8:32read scripture now, he teaches you how to pray
- 8:36and just going to him and just talking to him.
- 8:38You don't have to be fancy. You don't have to
- 8:40have all these things and all the words. And
- 8:44just say, I'm frustrated. I need your help. Thank
- 8:48you for this day. God wants honesty. And this
- 8:53year, make prayer a rhythm, not a rescue plan,
- 8:56not the last resort, not the thing that you do
- 8:59when everything falls apart. Make it your first
- 9:02instinct. Whenever you are overwhelmed, pray.
- 9:05Whenever you're grateful, pray. Whenever you
- 9:08feel lost, pray. Whenever you're strong, pray.
- 9:12Prayer is a place where your heart is softened.
- 9:15It is where the Holy Spirit convicts you, comforts
- 9:19you, and directs you. It is where burden is lifted
- 9:23and where peace enters. It is where you trade
- 9:26your strength for His. A holy habit of prayer
- 9:30is not about long prayers. It's about regular
- 9:34transparency before God. Number three, worship
- 9:39as a lifestyle. Romans 12 says, Present your
- 9:43bodies as a living sacrifice. This is a sacrifice,
- 9:46a spiritual act of worship. Worship is not just
- 9:49singing on Sunday. Worship is surrender. Worship
- 9:53is obedience. Worship is saying, God, my life
- 9:57is yours, not just my songs. And this year, create
- 10:02a habit of worship through your choices, your
- 10:05attitude, your reactions, your priorities. Start
- 10:08your morning with one worship song. Lift your
- 10:11hands in the car if you're not driving. Let your
- 10:14worship become a reflex. Let it shape your atmosphere
- 10:19today. Your spirit becomes what you surround
- 10:24yourself with. Fill your environment with worship
- 10:27and watch how it shifts your heart. Now let me
- 10:31speak something over your year. I've already
- 10:35claimed 2026 is going to be my healthiest year
- 10:38for my patients. So I've already claimed that.
- 10:40I claimed that back in October of last year.
- 10:43And just really just every time I seen somebody
- 10:44I said, now remember 2026 is going to be your
- 10:47healthiest year yet. 2026 is going to be your
- 10:49healthiest years yet. And so we do not need a
- 10:52perfect January to have a holy year. You just
- 10:56need a faithful January. Faithfulness beats perfection
- 11:00every single time. And I want you to jot these
- 11:07questions down. I have two questions for you.
- 11:09One, what do I want God to form in me this year?
- 11:16What do you want God to form in you this year?
- 11:21Write it down, marinate about it, think about
- 11:24it, let it simmer. Question two, what small daily
- 11:30choices will support that transformation. Because
- 11:37the whole purpose of having a relationship with
- 11:40Jesus is to be transformed. Because habits are
- 11:46not formed by motivation. They are formed by
- 11:49repetition. By choosing over and over again what
- 11:55matters most. So here's your January challenge.
- 12:01Pick two habits. Just do one word based habit,
- 12:08one prayer or worship habit. Write them down,
- 12:13schedule them, put them on your schedule, put
- 12:14them on your calendar until they just become
- 12:17part of your daily routine and protect that space.
- 12:23My mornings with God are pretty protected. Unless
- 12:29an emergency comes up, I am in my word. every
- 12:33day, but then if emergency comes up, then me
- 12:35and him are having a conversation on the way
- 12:37to the emergency. So in that same instance, like
- 12:40those are protected. What else is protected in
- 12:43my life? Quite a few things, but another thing
- 12:45that is protected is my workouts at lunch. I'm
- 12:49done. I need that time to reset, to just clear
- 12:52out my mind, to get some energy out, to create
- 12:54new energy, to make sure that I have just more
- 12:57energy for my afternoon. And it just, it's a
- 13:00cleansing thing. And so their heart stops. And
- 13:02so again, unless there's an emergency, I am stopping.
- 13:05I'm turning off my computers and I'm working
- 13:06out at lunch. That's just about online. These
- 13:09are what's important to me. These are what is
- 13:12part of my habits. And that's what I'm willing
- 13:15to do. These are non -negotiables again unless
- 13:19there's an emergency then these are my non -negotiables
- 13:22time with God and Eating healthy is another non
- 13:27-negotiable because I'm just not willing to give
- 13:29that up either I'm not willing to feel like and
- 13:32compromise health that way that's another hard
- 13:34stop for me, but we won't get into that and so
- 13:36let so And let me tell you something and so it's
- 13:40God meets you in the small. He honors the quiet.
- 13:44He breathes all the things no one else sees.
- 13:47You might feel like your five minutes with him
- 13:50is nothing. But in the unseen, God is building
- 13:55something stable, steady, and unshakable. This
- 13:59year of holy habits that will last. This is a
- 14:02year that spiritual transformation happens. This
- 14:05is a year of consistency with Christ. And we're
- 14:09just getting started. And so if this message
- 14:12inspired you, send it to a friend. Maybe you
- 14:14guys could start a transformation together. Who
- 14:16do you know that is not real close with Christ?
- 14:19Who do you know that could grow in their faith?
- 14:21And so send this to them and maybe make this
- 14:23a challenge for you. Go back to those questions.
- 14:25What do I want God to form me in this year? And
- 14:29what small daily choices am I willing to support
- 14:32that transformation? And so we go through step
- 14:35one, time in the Word. Two, pray and be honest
- 14:39about it. And three, worship as a lifestyle.
- 14:42These are all super practical, super simple tips
- 14:46to help us start your January off right. And
- 14:50so we would love to pray for you. Dear Heavenly
- 14:52Father, thank you so much for these listeners.
- 14:53Thank you so much for allowing them this time
- 14:56as a refret, as a restart. Thank you so much
- 14:59for this month of January. Thank you that you
- 15:02are changing us. Thank you that you're molding
- 15:03us. Thank you that you are putting a clean perspective.
- 15:06Thank you that you're giving us created ideas
- 15:08of how to get in all that we need to get in a
- 15:11day and still have the energy and motivation
- 15:13to do what we want to do. Thank you that you
- 15:15are transforming us from the inside out. Thank
- 15:18you for all that you do. In Jesus name I pray.
- 15:21Amen. Thank you so much for beginning your year
- 15:23with me this year. I cannot wait to walk through
- 15:26this month with you. I will see you next week
- 15:28for episode two. discipline, desire, and doing
- 15:32it anyway. Have a great week. We love you guys.
- 15:34Bye.
