- 0:08Speaker 1: This is me eater podcasting in you shirtless, severely bug
- 0:13Speaker 1: bitten and in my case underwear listening past, you can't
- 0:18Speaker 1: predict anything. Did you see the note the email from
- 0:29Speaker 1: a guy about his his some guy who was camping
- 0:33Speaker 1: with getting mauled by a northern pike. No, yeah, I
- 0:36Speaker 1: didn't catch that one. Washing dishes in a lake off
- 0:40Speaker 1: at the end of a dock, and the Northern must
- 0:43Speaker 1: have been shiny plates or something. The Northern came up.
- 0:47Speaker 1: The Northern came up, and it was like a barracuda
- 0:50Speaker 1: came up and gashed the dude's hand real bad. And
- 0:52Speaker 1: then his hands started faster and about up being a
- 0:54Speaker 1: pike tooth stuck in there. No ship. Oh my god,
- 0:58Speaker 1: it's interesting, isn't it. No, You're never safe. I think
- 1:01Speaker 1: you're just washing dishes mould by a fish, by a northern.
- 1:07Speaker 1: You're feeling feeling all safe in those northern woods. You're like,
- 1:10Speaker 1: there ain't no griz here, no mountain lions, and all
- 1:13Speaker 1: of a sudden I might have talked about this fort
- 1:16Speaker 1: you know what haw to my brother in law. Um,
- 1:20Speaker 1: he would you know, remember when skiing, remember water skiing? Um? Yeah,
- 1:27Speaker 1: but water skiing lost its uh lost its cash a
- 1:31Speaker 1: with the advent of the wakeboard. When I was a boy,
- 1:37Speaker 1: people water skis, well, if you were really good at it,
- 1:40Speaker 1: you would barefoot you guys know what that is skiing with? Yeah,
- 1:47Speaker 1: like you lay on you put a wet suit on
- 1:48Speaker 1: or not. I think I think barefooters will typically wear
- 1:50Speaker 1: a wet suit. You put a wet suit on, and
- 1:53Speaker 1: you lay on your back and kind of like like
- 1:56Speaker 1: so you lay in your back and take the ski,
- 1:57Speaker 1: hold the ski handle obviously, and you grab the rope
- 2:01Speaker 1: with your feet. Oh, like you'd hold the rope so
- 2:05Speaker 1: you're supine that means laying back right, and you got
- 2:08Speaker 1: the you got your feet touched together and so like
- 2:11Speaker 1: the curves on the inside, your feet are are sort
- 2:13Speaker 1: of holding the rope. And the boat takes off and
- 2:17Speaker 1: pretty soon you're skimming on your back, laying on your back,
- 2:24Speaker 1: bracing the rope and your feet laid out feet towards
- 2:26Speaker 1: the boat, head back and you get to where you're
- 2:29Speaker 1: skimming along. And then he would just all of a sudden,
- 2:33Speaker 1: through like this little bit of magic, he'd pop up
- 2:35Speaker 1: and there he was skiing with those skis, and he'd
- 2:37Speaker 1: be like digging his heels into the water, like that's
- 2:40Speaker 1: what would brace you just toled your toes curled up,
- 2:45Speaker 1: and then the thing of it is then you you
- 2:46Speaker 1: have a wet suit on, so you're able to roll
- 2:49Speaker 1: around and spin on your back and it's like your
- 2:52Speaker 1: breakdancing on the end of a rope. So he's coming around.
- 2:57Speaker 1: This is the lake I grew up on. No, I
- 3:00Speaker 1: think it's a lake, the lake next to the lake
- 3:02Speaker 1: I grew up on. Um and hit a sunning blue gill.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, drove the dorsal fin into the bottom
- 3:11Speaker 1: of foot he had surgically removed. Oh my gosh, poor
- 3:16Speaker 1: blue gill. What are the chances you can look at
- 3:21Speaker 1: it either way? I guess so. Yeah, you're never safe there.
- 3:24Speaker 1: You are sixty three miles now or whatever. Bind some
- 3:26Speaker 1: boat and you can still get hurt. Um. I want
- 3:30Speaker 1: to return before we talk about what we're going to
- 3:32Speaker 1: talk about. Mostly, I want to return to you observing Tracy.
- 3:35Speaker 1: You want to introduce yourself. Sure, I'm Tracy Crane, okay.
- 3:39Speaker 1: And then Maggie, I'm Maggie Smith Seth Morris and of
- 3:45Speaker 1: course yeah, and it's beautiless. You're observing that Janice is
- 3:51Speaker 1: driving habits are off brand, pretty honest, what is brand?
- 3:59Speaker 1: I was just surprised, having spent multiple days driving behind Joannice,
- 4:05Speaker 1: the speeds at which Joannice drives. I think Janice's brand
- 4:09Speaker 1: is buttoned up conservative. He's sitting here in a nice
- 4:13Speaker 1: button down with a Kashmir sweater over reckless and I
- 4:20Speaker 1: could almost classify his driving at moments reckless is extreme.
- 4:25Speaker 1: But Mario and Dretti style, like, I was like, whoa,
- 4:28Speaker 1: he guns it? Well, you know what we call him.
- 4:36Speaker 1: I was trying to because that was in the morning,
- 4:39Speaker 1: right at the time you followed us, and so we
- 4:41Speaker 1: were trying to get to a roosted turkey before like, yeah,
- 4:45Speaker 1: you definitely had your eye on the prize that we
- 4:49Speaker 1: had our eye on the prize, and and we were
- 4:51Speaker 1: not driving quite to that degree, but you guys didn't
- 4:55Speaker 1: have as far to go, and we were leaving at
- 4:56Speaker 1: the same time. See, but there was a weird exchange
- 5:00Speaker 1: we talked about a fair bit. We pulled up to
- 5:04Speaker 1: you because we had to talk about something real quick,
- 5:09Speaker 1: and I commented on your fast driving, yes or maybe not,
- 5:13Speaker 1: but anyways, you said, why don't you go ahead because
- 5:17Speaker 1: you'll be driving faster than me. Where in the world
- 5:20Speaker 1: would you get that idea? Oh well, the whole time
- 5:23Speaker 1: coming down, I felt like you were tailgating me, and
- 5:27Speaker 1: so I was That's why I thought you pulled up
- 5:29Speaker 1: next to me. I was trying to keep I was
- 5:33Speaker 1: struggling to keep up. And then after he made that
- 5:36Speaker 1: comment to you, Steve, he started to roll the window
- 5:40Speaker 1: up and he gave a signal with his hand and
- 5:43Speaker 1: burned out. Yeah, And that someone was like, yeah, he's
- 5:49Speaker 1: a little spicy this morning. It's been said before. You
- 5:54Speaker 1: guys aren't the first group of people that have noticed
- 5:56Speaker 1: that I drive maybe a little bit more aggressed to
- 6:00Speaker 1: leave the most. But I can tell you, man, I
- 6:03Speaker 1: haven't had a speeding ticket in no no, but because
- 6:09Speaker 1: on roads where there's speed limits, I don't. I feel
- 6:12Speaker 1: like when I'm on dirt road, I feel like I
- 6:14Speaker 1: should just be driving where I feel safe and in control.
- 6:18Speaker 1: But I don't know how you kids in the car
- 6:20Speaker 1: all the time in good conscious on that on that
- 6:24Speaker 1: dirt road, it was a little old lady I gather
- 6:27Speaker 1: just by her decorations, who has out a sign. I
- 6:30Speaker 1: thought it was interesting that her sign is aimed up
- 6:34Speaker 1: towards the National Forest, not down towards the highway. She's
- 6:38Speaker 1: alerting drivers coming from up. Yeah, but that says something
- 6:43Speaker 1: like drive slow, please respect our roads coming there. That
- 6:51Speaker 1: direct is because people are coming downhill, so you're naturally
- 6:56Speaker 1: going to be driving faster going down the hill than
- 6:59Speaker 1: up the hill. It's what it is, that's well thought out.
- 7:02Speaker 1: It's real quick. I don't want to bore people to death.
- 7:04Speaker 1: I want to return to Yanni's brand. This is not
- 7:06Speaker 1: how he dresses because what the what's the first thing
- 7:09Speaker 1: I said to you this morning? Why are you so
- 7:10Speaker 1: dressed up? Every time I wear a collar shirt? He
- 7:13Speaker 1: said that he's going to uhum. His daughter's got a
- 7:17Speaker 1: little routine she's doing. I gotta go to one of
- 7:20Speaker 1: those this Sunday. Sunday Spring concert and art auction is
- 7:25Speaker 1: what we have tonight, No Saturday. Last year. Last year,
- 7:32Speaker 1: somebody that must have a little uh hobby farm uh
- 7:36Speaker 1: donated a peacock, and by the time I was done
- 7:40Speaker 1: googling can you eat a peacock? Eat peacocks? It already solved.
- 7:47Speaker 1: So this year I'm prepared ter than spending because the
- 7:51Speaker 1: whole deal is met peacock. Huh. I don't know is there.
- 7:54Speaker 1: I didn't know that there was two different things. I
- 7:56Speaker 1: don't know. I just feel people have him as I
- 7:59Speaker 1: feel like they're an ornamental. I do, and I'm guessing
- 8:03Speaker 1: that that's what it is donated for. But I don't
- 8:05Speaker 1: need an ornamental peacock, but I would rather because the
- 8:09Speaker 1: deal with with this art auction is that they're basically
- 8:11Speaker 1: saying like, hey, it's great fun, we're all gonna get
- 8:14Speaker 1: together do the little spring concert, but really we need
- 8:18Speaker 1: three hundred bucks from every for each kid, from every parent, right,
- 8:23Speaker 1: So if you have two kids, you gotta drop six
- 8:24Speaker 1: hundred bucks for the art program. Someone articulated this to you. Yeah. Yeah,
- 8:30Speaker 1: they're just saying, hey, we don't have enough funds for
- 8:33Speaker 1: like the art program that we want to have here. Right.
- 8:36Speaker 1: Funds are for funds for art and music all that
- 8:39Speaker 1: stuff are cut nationwide. Right, So if you want to
- 8:42Speaker 1: keep this going on, it's a problem. This is what
- 8:45Speaker 1: it did. Approximately costs US three hundred dollars per kid.
- 8:49Speaker 1: So I like to take that as I've got two
- 8:52Speaker 1: in their stroking a check for six hundred, whether I
- 8:54Speaker 1: walk out of there with some piece of art that yeah,
- 8:58Speaker 1: so this here, I'm coming for aired and if that
- 9:00Speaker 1: peacock shows up again or one of his offspring or
- 9:04Speaker 1: her offspring, I'm I'm bidden. So can you eat peacock?
- 9:11Speaker 1: And that's what you're gonna do with it, buddy. We'll
- 9:14Speaker 1: probably keep it around for a little bit. It's gonna
- 9:15Speaker 1: be cool to have peacock in the yard for a week.
- 9:17Speaker 1: And you're gonna wake your daughters up one day and say, girls,
- 9:22Speaker 1: oh no, I don't know where I keep the hatchet.
- 9:25Speaker 1: I've already talked it through with them. They know the deal.
- 9:28Speaker 1: We're gonna have peacock dinner party. I look forward to
- 9:32Speaker 1: being invited there. A little daughter have one of the
- 9:35Speaker 1: feathers after you. Exactly. They were a little suspect. I'm like, dude,
- 9:38Speaker 1: let me tell you the feathers. You think these turkey
- 9:40Speaker 1: feathers are cool, Wait till you have like a bucket
- 9:43Speaker 1: full of peacock feathers. Man, you're gonna be stuck. That
- 9:46Speaker 1: can make a little business out of that. Yeah, every
- 9:50Speaker 1: year they could sell what dozen peacock preathers. I feel
- 9:54Speaker 1: like you're gonna be ostracized from the the community. I
- 9:58Speaker 1: don't think so at all. If he were to kill
- 10:00Speaker 1: the peacock after after winning it in the auction, when
- 10:03Speaker 1: you walk up, when you walk up to get the peacock,
- 10:06Speaker 1: let's say there is one for sale, you purchase it.
- 10:07Speaker 1: When you walk up and you get and you get
- 10:09Speaker 1: a chance to speak into the microphone and you say, uh,
- 10:14Speaker 1: thank you everyone for turning out. Support. Um, I'm gonna
- 10:19Speaker 1: eat this peacock, watch and see watching and try to
- 10:25Speaker 1: gauge the audience response. Okay, I will do that. Maybe
- 10:29Speaker 1: I'll pose it as a question. I'll say, is anybody
- 10:31Speaker 1: ever eating one of these things? And I'll throw him off.
- 10:35Speaker 1: They'll be like, you think that guy might eat because
- 10:37Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, he's just joking. He's drunk. No, there's
- 10:43Speaker 1: no drinking that goes on at this event. Well you
- 10:46Speaker 1: look good either way. Hey, thanks well, and thank you
- 10:48Speaker 1: for the compliment. I liked it my how you described
- 10:51Speaker 1: my brand? Oh, goodhead, I'm glad we do that a
- 10:56Speaker 1: little more. What's seth brand? I quickly? When I do
- 11:01Speaker 1: you feel like in high school I was often definitely
- 11:06Speaker 1: part of the trouble making that was also I feel
- 11:09Speaker 1: like the person that was like, okay, we're going to
- 11:12Speaker 1: cross over the threshold right like this, this is the
- 11:15Speaker 1: part where if the cat pops catches like, we're gonna
- 11:17Speaker 1: be in really big trouble, so let's just take it
- 11:19Speaker 1: back a notch. That's a nice balance, right, and I
- 11:22Speaker 1: think that fits my brand now, I would agree with that.
- 11:25Speaker 1: I think that's a good evaluation. But those going to
- 11:33Speaker 1: curb it back. That's why he follows the speed limit
- 11:36Speaker 1: only on paved roads, not on dirt roads. You know,
- 11:41Speaker 1: that's a we'll button us up, But that's a I
- 11:45Speaker 1: think that's called type one morality. Not doing it because
- 11:50Speaker 1: you're afraid of getting caught, not doing it because you
- 11:53Speaker 1: fear the punishments. Like I think there's like these degrees
- 11:56Speaker 1: of morality interesting. So it's like you don't there's a
- 11:59Speaker 1: thing you like, you don't do it because you don't
- 12:01Speaker 1: want to get in trouble. And then the top morality
- 12:05Speaker 1: is you do it. This would be civil disobedience. The
- 12:08Speaker 1: top morality is doing it knowing you'll be in trouble,
- 12:13Speaker 1: like that's the only reason you're doing it, is basically
- 12:16Speaker 1: like so you get in trouble. No, I think it
- 12:18Speaker 1: goes and I'm not looking at it right now, but
- 12:19Speaker 1: I think it goes like the thing being like rolls
- 12:21Speaker 1: of parks, right, So she's doing it wrong. She's committing
- 12:26Speaker 1: it wrong, you know, according to civil civil law, committing
- 12:32Speaker 1: it wrong and there's trouble. But that's like a different
- 12:34Speaker 1: type of morality. It would be like like, oh, I'll
- 12:36Speaker 1: break a law so long as I know I won't
- 12:38Speaker 1: get in trouble. And since there's no police on these
- 12:41Speaker 1: back national forest roads, what are the odds, So therefore
- 12:45Speaker 1: it's okay. And then on the main road it's like, oh, no,
- 12:48Speaker 1: I drive the speed limit here because I don't want
- 12:49Speaker 1: to get in trouble. So he's the type one moral guy.
- 12:54Speaker 1: There's pluses and minuses to that. I think, uh, real quick,
- 12:58Speaker 1: this is a return to the brand thing, and then
- 12:59Speaker 1: we're gonna get on. Um. Does Seth have a brand? Absolutely,
- 13:04Speaker 1: because everybody has a brand. What's my brand? Um? Your brand?
- 13:11Speaker 1: You don't have to tell Seth Brandon. Here's what Seth
- 13:15Speaker 1: brand is. Seth brand is he's vivacious. He has a
- 13:22Speaker 1: little bit of um, kind of liking to push the envelope.
- 13:25Speaker 1: Dare devilish um, but but tones it down with kind
- 13:30Speaker 1: of that warm smile, that willingness to help that um,
- 13:36Speaker 1: you know, is a great turkey finder. That is the
- 13:41Speaker 1: biggest redeeming quality in my mind. And also the fact
- 13:47Speaker 1: that he's a he's a DP is also a winner
- 13:50Speaker 1: in my mind too. Not the kind we'll get to that.
- 13:57Speaker 1: We're not gonna cover that. Okay, I don't want to
- 13:59Speaker 1: destroy your career. I appreciate that. Um, Okay, you guys,
- 14:07Speaker 1: here's what we're here to talk about. You guys recently
- 14:12Speaker 1: Maggie and Tracy, Um, you gals, not guys recently embarked
- 14:20Speaker 1: on a life's journey. I would definitely say it was
- 14:24Speaker 1: that who wants to do? Which you would like to do?
- 14:27Speaker 1: A quick rundown of what exactly you just did? Go
- 14:30Speaker 1: for it, Maggie, you go forecau. Tracy already branded everyone. Well,
- 14:38Speaker 1: we went on our very first turkey hunt. But would
- 14:40Speaker 1: you have to do to prep um, we had to
- 14:42Speaker 1: get our hunting license, do hunters, d do some shooting
- 14:46Speaker 1: practice days and learn a little bit about turkeys as
- 14:51Speaker 1: as adults as like very literate adults who went through
- 14:54Speaker 1: hunters that. Um, can you give me some uh the
- 15:00Speaker 1: what's your impression just you know, casual impression about that process? Extensive?
- 15:07Speaker 1: That's exactly what comes to mind. I'm not sure. I
- 15:10Speaker 1: I'm not sure. I thought much about it in advance,
- 15:12Speaker 1: but I did not think it would be as robust
- 15:15Speaker 1: and as beefy as it is, and it took a
- 15:18Speaker 1: long time, understandably. So now kind of sitting back on
- 15:21Speaker 1: the other side, reflecting on it, I completely understand why
- 15:25Speaker 1: it's as extensive as it is. Totally, I totally agree
- 15:29Speaker 1: with that. I mean, I don't know. Was there ten
- 15:32Speaker 1: topics and the like? Within each topic, they were between
- 15:34Speaker 1: four and seven sub topics, and then within those sub
- 15:37Speaker 1: topics topics there are chapters. I mean it was. It
- 15:40Speaker 1: was lengthy, but it almost like, I don't know, kind
- 15:43Speaker 1: of freaked me out a little bit in some sections,
- 15:48Speaker 1: just like talking about injuries and they're saying, like turkey
- 15:50Speaker 1: hunting is the number one like situation when you're out
- 15:54Speaker 1: in the woods where hunters get injured, and I was like, WHOA, Okay,
- 15:59Speaker 1: He's like hunting was the easy way. Again, like the
- 16:05Speaker 1: thing with the different types of morality, it would be
- 16:09Speaker 1: easy to go find this out. And I'm gonna say
- 16:11Speaker 1: a thing that might be demonstrably wrong, but I feel
- 16:16Speaker 1: that the most common hunting accident is swinging on a
- 16:22Speaker 1: bird mm hmmm. And peppering someone with a shotgun. You
- 16:29Speaker 1: guys probably heard about that too, right, Yeah. They talked
- 16:31Speaker 1: a lot about your shooting zone, like what hamed with
- 16:34Speaker 1: what happened with Dick Cheney. He's hunning coil in Texas.
- 16:38Speaker 1: You're in thick brush, right, a bird jumps you kind
- 16:41Speaker 1: of focused on the bird. The birds a little low,
- 16:45Speaker 1: you know. And in the times that I've been shot
- 16:48Speaker 1: by a shotgun, never bad enough to even puncture my skin,
- 16:51Speaker 1: but I've been peppered. Uh, it was same thing hunting
- 16:54Speaker 1: up bird. I don't know if they said it was
- 16:57Speaker 1: number one, but they definitely said it was in uh
- 17:00Speaker 1: in the you know, one of the most um often
- 17:04Speaker 1: injuries they see because obviously you're in full camo and
- 17:08Speaker 1: you're hiding, so you're buckled down and you're calling, and
- 17:12Speaker 1: so people mistake when I when I took my hunter
- 17:17Speaker 1: safety back in Pennsylvania, they showed a video of this
- 17:22Speaker 1: guy calling to a turkey and he would like move
- 17:24Speaker 1: in on it. And as he was calling, he was
- 17:26Speaker 1: using a mouth call. He would wipe his mouth with
- 17:29Speaker 1: a white bandana. Why was he wiping his mouth just
- 17:33Speaker 1: from like I don't know, spitting and stuff. When he's
- 17:35Speaker 1: calling using a mouth call, when he wipe his mouth
- 17:39Speaker 1: and he like keeps getting like getting closer and close
- 17:42Speaker 1: to the turkey, and all of a sudden, like a
- 17:43Speaker 1: shot out of nowhere and the dude ends up getting shot.
- 17:47Speaker 1: Oh my god, who is filming this? It was It
- 17:50Speaker 1: was like a a simulated video, but it was just
- 17:54Speaker 1: a show like that's the most common honting accident in Pennsylvania.
- 17:59Speaker 1: So that's that they had someone and they're like, let's
- 18:02Speaker 1: have it be that you're out calling wiping your mouth
- 18:06Speaker 1: with a handkerchief as a handkerchief as a way to
- 18:09Speaker 1: demonstrate how one might get in a hunting accident. Yeah,
- 18:12Speaker 1: I don't know if it was just a way to
- 18:13Speaker 1: get into the conversation that like turkey hunting is like
- 18:19Speaker 1: the number one thing that where people you know, No,
- 18:22Speaker 1: I got that. I just don't know that I would have. Yeah,
- 18:27Speaker 1: I don't know. But what is the one thing that
- 18:29Speaker 1: like stuck in my head about that? For well, of course,
- 18:32Speaker 1: you know, I know that that's one of the arguments
- 18:34Speaker 1: against and states were allowed to use a rifle hunting
- 18:37Speaker 1: spring turkeys. Um, that's one of the big arguments against it.
- 18:43Speaker 1: Against that it's just no. There's a couple states that
- 18:47Speaker 1: allow you to use the right phone let you hunt
- 18:49Speaker 1: rifles in spring turkeys. And there's a story we don't have.
- 18:52Speaker 1: We probably talked about this. I had to take even
- 18:53Speaker 1: get into it, the story about what happened when they
- 18:55Speaker 1: tried to make it that you couldn't use rifles in
- 18:57Speaker 1: Florida for spring turkeys. Like where they got resistance from
- 19:00Speaker 1: where it's coming from turkey hunters. Turkey hunters were saying,
- 19:05Speaker 1: you know what, we're all wearing camo, We're making turkey noises.
- 19:09Speaker 1: This is a flat country. We use turkey decoys. We
- 19:13Speaker 1: feel that to be in the best interest of turkey
- 19:16Speaker 1: hunters and turkey hunting if you we're not allowed to
- 19:23Speaker 1: use rifles because they carry obviously they going a straight
- 19:26Speaker 1: line for quite ways, and people were uncomfortable with it.
- 19:30Speaker 1: And my understanding of this story is that it got
- 19:32Speaker 1: turned into like a gun issue and not like a
- 19:34Speaker 1: hunting issue, and it was it was misconstrued in a
- 19:40Speaker 1: in a in a weird way. But that's one of
- 19:42Speaker 1: the reasons why in most places they limited shotguns, probably
- 19:45Speaker 1: something to do with efficacy to right. It's like, yeah,
- 19:47Speaker 1: get a lot closer, but there's just the safety concern. Um,
- 19:52Speaker 1: do you guys realize, like, haven't gone through hunters safety.
- 19:55Speaker 1: What do you think when I tell you that there's
- 19:58Speaker 1: sort of a movement across the country to ease up
- 20:04Speaker 1: and make it easier, too easier to get licenses and
- 20:08Speaker 1: removing restrictions and allowing people to hunt multiple years with
- 20:13Speaker 1: a mentor before needing to do their hunters safety or
- 20:16Speaker 1: simplifying hunters safety, having done having kind of not been
- 20:21Speaker 1: raised around this and having done it, And when I
- 20:24Speaker 1: tell you that that's true, that's surprising to you or
- 20:26Speaker 1: you see that like, oh, I could see that. It's
- 20:29Speaker 1: surprising to me to lower the goal being to lower
- 20:32Speaker 1: the barrier to entry. I mean, I see why there
- 20:34Speaker 1: would be a push, but I don't agree with that
- 20:37Speaker 1: you fell those useful information. I didn't. I mean, some
- 20:40Speaker 1: of the videos were pretty funny. I think we could
- 20:42Speaker 1: do a better job in our department, but no, it
- 20:46Speaker 1: was very educational and personally, I really liked the section
- 20:49Speaker 1: all about conservation at the end. I mean that really
- 20:51Speaker 1: struck home as being someone that studied ecology and biology,
- 20:55Speaker 1: I mean that was I loved that they put that
- 20:57Speaker 1: in there. And I was like, you're not gonna necessarily,
- 21:00Speaker 1: depending on who your mentor is, get that side, you know,
- 21:04Speaker 1: or there's other things you might not get from a
- 21:06Speaker 1: mentor that are probably in there. I don't know, I
- 21:09Speaker 1: appreciated the extensiveness of it. You guys had coursework and
- 21:13Speaker 1: field work. We did our coursework online and then you
- 21:19Speaker 1: had a field day in person, got a test, and
- 21:22Speaker 1: you did some shooting at field day. We didn't actually,
- 21:26Speaker 1: and I think partly there was an option. It was
- 21:29Speaker 1: you could volunteer if you wanted to participate in that
- 21:31Speaker 1: section of the field day, but the majority of the
- 21:34Speaker 1: field day was focused on There were different stations that
- 21:37Speaker 1: were set up and you basically had to attend every
- 21:39Speaker 1: single station, and each station had a different kind of
- 21:42Speaker 1: objective of what it is. It was teaching you, and
- 21:45Speaker 1: then you could stay after if you wanted to shoot,
- 21:47Speaker 1: but we didn't because we knew we were going to
- 21:49Speaker 1: be doing practice work with you guys anyways, and it
- 21:53Speaker 1: was an interesting group of people that were there. I
- 21:58Speaker 1: don't know. I just was like, I'm not sure I
- 21:59Speaker 1: feel terribly comfortable staying here and shooting. They were like,
- 22:05Speaker 1: I don't know, how older, youngest, kid when you can
- 22:07Speaker 1: get your hunting license. Yeah. The majority of the attendees
- 22:11Speaker 1: were definitely children, children, and they were already the way
- 22:14Speaker 1: that they were handling the firearms during our stations, I
- 22:16Speaker 1: was like, OK, yeah, and I was like, how did
- 22:21Speaker 1: they pass is questionable? Is that a puny dynamic being
- 22:25Speaker 1: in there with the kids? Oh? Yeah, And we got
- 22:27Speaker 1: partnered with the kids and yeah. It was kind of
- 22:30Speaker 1: cool though at the same time because all of the
- 22:32Speaker 1: people who were facilitating the field day were adults, obviously,
- 22:36Speaker 1: and the majority of the people at the field day
- 22:37Speaker 1: we went to was in a small community. It was
- 22:40Speaker 1: very family oriented, so they had just passed on the
- 22:44Speaker 1: gentleman had been doing it for fifty years, had just
- 22:46Speaker 1: passed on kind of the leadership responsibility to his daughter.
- 22:50Speaker 1: So it was really like special to kind of see
- 22:52Speaker 1: that dynamic and um them talk a little bit about
- 22:55Speaker 1: how kind of important this has, you know, how important
- 22:58Speaker 1: this has been in their life. Um. But yeah, interacting
- 23:02Speaker 1: with the kids, it was like trying to get them
- 23:03Speaker 1: to talk what are you most excited about? What have
- 23:05Speaker 1: you learned? What stuck with you? It was like quiet.
- 23:09Speaker 1: They wanted nothing to do. You not my mom, You're
- 23:18Speaker 1: not the teacher. That was until where it got out
- 23:21Speaker 1: that we were part of meat eater, and then they
- 23:23Speaker 1: wanted to talk to us and they thought we were
- 23:25Speaker 1: really cool, and so did the parents. The parents then
- 23:29Speaker 1: start flogging over and we're like okay. So then the
- 23:35Speaker 1: next stage is right down for people. What you're um
- 23:41Speaker 1: exposure to firearms and exposure and impressions of firearms. Well,
- 23:47Speaker 1: I grew up in a very large city, so and
- 23:51Speaker 1: I was never exposed to firearms as a as a child,
- 23:57Speaker 1: as an adolescent, even as an adult, so like had
- 24:00Speaker 1: no experience. I think you guys were shocked to learn that.
- 24:04Speaker 1: But I've never shot a gun, thing like how would
- 24:06Speaker 1: you get through life? And you know, I was like, like,
- 24:10Speaker 1: is that that's not necessarily, you know, representative of everybody.
- 24:14Speaker 1: But I'd never I'd never held a gun. I never
- 24:16Speaker 1: shot a gun, Like I'd done nothing within the realm
- 24:19Speaker 1: at all. The more I thought about it, there's more
- 24:22Speaker 1: people that I have gone are in tracy shoes than
- 24:26Speaker 1: have gone through life and have shot a gun. I
- 24:29Speaker 1: think in this state, I think, in this state of
- 24:33Speaker 1: households at that I'm not surprised something like that. I
- 24:36Speaker 1: don't know here I am like, I keep shouting off
- 24:38Speaker 1: like figures and stuff that I don't know. I'm sure
- 24:43Speaker 1: you're in a lot of so go on, but I
- 24:48Speaker 1: remember um and I've never even really been in situations
- 24:52Speaker 1: where I had been able to see a firearm, you know,
- 24:55Speaker 1: like I wasn't in situations where besides like on a
- 24:58Speaker 1: police officer or something. I remember when we first bought
- 25:02Speaker 1: our place in Montana. I remember seeing one of the
- 25:06Speaker 1: farmers who has property neighboring us, and he was like
- 25:09Speaker 1: driving around in his I think it was his his
- 25:12Speaker 1: pickup truck and he had his rifle or shotgun, I
- 25:15Speaker 1: don't know, one of the two like hanging in the
- 25:17Speaker 1: back of his truck. And I was like, oh, okay,
- 25:21Speaker 1: like where WHOA Like I was like, now I feel
- 25:26Speaker 1: like I have you know, my my perspective has completely changed.
- 25:30Speaker 1: But I was like, oh, this is a different I
- 25:32Speaker 1: am in a different world. Yeah. Do you see that
- 25:36Speaker 1: there's a cover it's kind of a startling cover of
- 25:40Speaker 1: a New Yorker magazine from some time ago in the
- 25:43Speaker 1: last year, where it was like two cars pulled into
- 25:47Speaker 1: a turnout like a like a river launch, and there's
- 25:51Speaker 1: a pick It's like it's like an atypical campsite. Yeah,
- 25:54Speaker 1: it's like a campsite. I think. There's a pickup with
- 25:56Speaker 1: a shotgun in the window, so he's got his like
- 25:59Speaker 1: shot gun in the window rack. And there's a guy
- 26:02Speaker 1: getting a boat. He's got his little kids with them,
- 26:04Speaker 1: and they're like getting their unloading inner tubes or whatever.
- 26:07Speaker 1: And the guy's kind of like looking very uneasily because
- 26:11Speaker 1: this shotgun is like aimed over as he's unloading his
- 26:16Speaker 1: car with his kids, and it's kind of this a
- 26:18Speaker 1: little bit of eerie cover. Ye didn't see it. I
- 26:21Speaker 1: think it's like a certain you know, people who don't
- 26:23Speaker 1: I think that that's people don't have exposure to firearms
- 26:28Speaker 1: don't really like understand like how they function and what
- 26:30Speaker 1: purpose they serve in people's lives. It's kind of like yeah, totally. Well,
- 26:35Speaker 1: and then you add on top of it what we
- 26:37Speaker 1: see in the quote unquote news, and I think that
- 26:39Speaker 1: doesn't contribute in a positive way to how people who
- 26:44Speaker 1: don't have exposure view firearms. Yeah definitely, yeah, absolutely so, um,
- 26:52Speaker 1: well never shot one, no, and oh no, I know
- 26:58Speaker 1: you're baffled by that, but like I never had a chance,
- 27:02Speaker 1: like I would never have had a chance. I grew
- 27:04Speaker 1: up in New York City, Like I walked to school
- 27:07Speaker 1: every day. We didn't leave the city that often except
- 27:09Speaker 1: if we went on vacation and stuff like That. Was
- 27:12Speaker 1: not the life that I had as a as a child.
- 27:17Speaker 1: And then the first time you shot was with the
- 27:18Speaker 1: honest and what talk about that a little bit. Well,
- 27:24Speaker 1: I was fortunate enough to not go first, Maggie, go first,
- 27:28Speaker 1: because I think I was a little apprehensive, Maggie exposure
- 27:33Speaker 1: impressions prior to your your new found bill. Yeah. Not
- 27:38Speaker 1: in my family was I ever presented the opportunity like
- 27:41Speaker 1: my immediate family, my cousins. I want to know how
- 27:45Speaker 1: very much grew up hunting with my uncle, But my
- 27:48Speaker 1: family was just not on that page. In Minnesota. I mean,
- 27:51Speaker 1: I know there's a huge honey community in Minnesota, but
- 27:54Speaker 1: my family it's very liberal, I would say, And it
- 27:57Speaker 1: was just never presented to me. So I did it
- 28:00Speaker 1: to shoot one time with my cousins because my uncle
- 28:02Speaker 1: wanted me to go out and do that. It was
- 28:04Speaker 1: important to him. Yeah, it was important to him. And
- 28:06Speaker 1: the first gun I shot was might get this wrong? No, Uh,
- 28:09Speaker 1: was your military grade a R fifteen on the ground,
- 28:12Speaker 1: which was just like, holy moly, this thing's kind of fun.
- 28:17Speaker 1: So that was your first shooting experience the most people. Well,
- 28:22Speaker 1: then they handed me I think it was a twelve
- 28:24Speaker 1: gauge or twenty gage shotgun and they didn't tell me
- 28:26Speaker 1: about the kick, and man, I flew back on my ass.
- 28:31Speaker 1: How old were you when that happened? I think I
- 28:32Speaker 1: was like sixteen and then and then after that that
- 28:38Speaker 1: was it. Yeah, curious about him at all? Did you
- 28:43Speaker 1: ever think, like, you know, I'd like to buy one
- 28:44Speaker 1: of those things? No? No, never. I don't think my
- 28:47Speaker 1: boyfriend like go out and like every time we're in
- 28:49Speaker 1: a sportsman's or something, he wants to go look, and
- 28:51Speaker 1: I was just like, oh, not going to I don't know.
- 28:55Speaker 1: He's a carpenter. Yeah, but he doesn't own any No,
- 28:59Speaker 1: he hasn't own any He's he lived in Waomi though
- 29:01Speaker 1: for a while and did some hunting. But yeah, and
- 29:05Speaker 1: then when you went to shoot, what was that like?
- 29:07Speaker 1: I was scared of the unknown? Yeah, just I didn't
- 29:12Speaker 1: know what to expect. It's been a while. I don't
- 29:15Speaker 1: know why I was scared, but I just was. My
- 29:16Speaker 1: heart was like racy or your last experience with a shotgun. Yeah,
- 29:20Speaker 1: it wasn't a good knocked on your ass you said
- 29:22Speaker 1: so and laughed at So you got mocked and knocked yea, Um,
- 29:28Speaker 1: so you went you, you went shot, and you were scared,
- 29:30Speaker 1: but just scared of whatever, like not not necessarily the noise,
- 29:33Speaker 1: not necessarily the kick, but yeah, just apprehension. I think
- 29:38Speaker 1: about the whole situation. Was there any self loathing? No, no, no,
- 29:44Speaker 1: I was wanting to get it right. I think, like,
- 29:47Speaker 1: not mess it up, not hurt anybody. There's like a
- 29:49Speaker 1: lot of respect I've gained. And also like I think
- 29:53Speaker 1: that's partially wise intimidated, Like I don't think a firearm
- 29:56Speaker 1: something you just mess around with, you know, So I
- 29:59Speaker 1: want to make sure he's doing it right, not hurting anybody.
- 30:03Speaker 1: And then when when you shot, was it, um like,
- 30:07Speaker 1: did you enjoy shooting or does it more seem like
- 30:09Speaker 1: it's just a thing that you have to do in
- 30:11Speaker 1: order to then go out and go hunting. Um, I
- 30:13Speaker 1: think I enjoyed it for sure, after I got used
- 30:16Speaker 1: to it. For its own sake, Yeah, for its own sake.
- 30:18Speaker 1: It was fun to see like where I hit on
- 30:20Speaker 1: the target and everything, But it was totally different though,
- 30:24Speaker 1: like when it came it comes down to actually setting
- 30:26Speaker 1: up and like getting in that moment too. That's a
- 30:30Speaker 1: totally different feeling as well. But I got more comfortable
- 30:33Speaker 1: with it and the more we shot and felt better
- 30:35Speaker 1: about it. But the first one in the video, you screamed,
- 30:42Speaker 1: I like screamed. I was like, I think she's like.
- 30:45Speaker 1: That's also why I got the benefit of like witnessing
- 30:47Speaker 1: her doing it first, because she like felt the kick, like,
- 30:50Speaker 1: but she's tiny, and you could see the impact on
- 30:53Speaker 1: her body because I don't think she was expecting it
- 30:56Speaker 1: to be as much as it was, so you weren't
- 30:59Speaker 1: like prepared for so your body like really reacted. Yeah,
- 31:02Speaker 1: and the noise just scared me. But I get spooked easily.
- 31:05Speaker 1: So you made a strange little sound, yeah, scream or
- 31:10Speaker 1: I don't even know what as you as you pull
- 31:13Speaker 1: the trigger after no not as they each did a clip,
- 31:20Speaker 1: a five round clip out of my Yeah, not that.
- 31:26Speaker 1: But then I was like, what do you guys want
- 31:27Speaker 1: to do that? Some more? Okay, but hold on hold that.
- 31:30Speaker 1: What did you guys like shooting the twenty two? Well,
- 31:33Speaker 1: I find it to be easier for me too. It's
- 31:36Speaker 1: a smoother and more seamless experience. Right, Oh yeah, totally.
- 31:42Speaker 1: So it was like this was a very mild report. Yeah,
- 31:45Speaker 1: so I was like, oh, this is what we're talking about,
- 31:47Speaker 1: the recoil and report or minimal. Yeah, it was lovely,
- 31:51Speaker 1: kids love shooting. I can see why. Totally. I was saying.
- 31:55Speaker 1: I screamed not when I shot the twenty two. Okay,
- 31:58Speaker 1: so go on. Oh yeah, like I said, they only
- 32:02Speaker 1: did each a clip of that. I'm like, hey, you
- 32:04Speaker 1: want to do that some more because that's I figure,
- 32:06Speaker 1: that is a great way to get into it. At
- 32:08Speaker 1: least you're getting to do all the same motions. Almost
- 32:12Speaker 1: the loading is a little bit different. You realize you're
- 32:13Speaker 1: gonna have a lot of guys being like this that
- 32:16Speaker 1: a clip. It's not a clip magazine. What's the difference.
- 32:26Speaker 1: There's like a thing called a clip that's not that's
- 32:28Speaker 1: not what that one is. And I know what you mean,
- 32:30Speaker 1: and everyone knows what you mean. But people will right
- 32:32Speaker 1: in and well good, and I'm glad that you're addressing
- 32:35Speaker 1: it down. And these people don't have to write in.
- 32:38Speaker 1: They'll write a note that sounds like this, Now you
- 32:45Speaker 1: don't have to um so A five round magazine and
- 32:51Speaker 1: uh I thought we would, you know, run through a
- 32:55Speaker 1: box each so's difference? What is that actually different a
- 32:58Speaker 1: clip in a magazine? Well, I don't don't know if
- 33:00Speaker 1: there's a difference, but I know, um My, my body
- 33:05Speaker 1: and roommate Rick, who was in the Marine Corps, like,
- 33:09Speaker 1: if I call it a clip, He's like, what what? What? What?
- 33:12Speaker 1: Hell is the clip? Because it's like this little thing
- 33:14Speaker 1: that used to be like a clip. We always grew
- 33:17Speaker 1: up calling them clip. I never called him. I called
- 33:18Speaker 1: him clips too. But yeah, it's like, but then I
- 33:22Speaker 1: noticed people are always correcting you about it. Oh, here
- 33:25Speaker 1: we go, right? Am I right? Or am I right?
- 33:28Speaker 1: You can put in difference between MG and it will
- 33:31Speaker 1: auto filed magazine and clip. An amiation clip as a
- 33:35Speaker 1: device used to store individual rounds of ammunition together as
- 33:40Speaker 1: a single unit that is then ready for insertion into
- 33:44Speaker 1: the magazine of a gun. Yeah, we used to call
- 33:48Speaker 1: you Yanni Van's wall man. You're supposed to know this stuff. Interesting. Well,
- 33:57Speaker 1: we learned something new today, Yanni litt something about firearms.
- 34:01Speaker 1: Feels good. He's usually pretty, he's usually pretty. His brand,
- 34:08Speaker 1: his brand is known about firearms. Anyhoo, that twenty two
- 34:14Speaker 1: wasn't exciting. They wanted to jump right over exciting. I
- 34:20Speaker 1: think it was more at least fro my perspective. I
- 34:21Speaker 1: was like, come on, we're not going to be using this.
- 34:25Speaker 1: Let's practice what we're going to be using in this situation.
- 34:28Speaker 1: You want to get the real world training, Yeah, totally,
- 34:31Speaker 1: we didn't. You know. I wanted to be as prepared
- 34:33Speaker 1: as possible and utilize as much of the time as
- 34:35Speaker 1: we could. So you want to switch over to smooth bore?
- 34:40Speaker 1: Do you guys you've run not comfortable with lingo yet?
- 34:43Speaker 1: I mean, like you wouldn't uh Like he said, Seth
- 34:47Speaker 1: mentioned someone grab needing to grab their iron and you
- 34:51Speaker 1: didn't know what he's talking about. I could kind of
- 34:55Speaker 1: figure it out, but I did one of those you know,
- 34:58Speaker 1: those awkward pauses, and I was like, all right, so
- 35:02Speaker 1: you don't get to like, you don't run around saying
- 35:07Speaker 1: you're twenty two like a double dude. Old Betsy, there's
- 35:13Speaker 1: a whole new vocb Nelly Bells. That's what I call
- 35:17Speaker 1: my shotgun. Old Nellie tell us the origin of that name. Um,
- 35:25Speaker 1: I don't know. I'm not working. I have a friend
- 35:27Speaker 1: that that used to use that term just like like
- 35:31Speaker 1: old goodness for like general good firearms. What do you
- 35:36Speaker 1: mean like it just not a unique one, just firearms
- 35:40Speaker 1: in general. He would I just grabbed old nellye bells,
- 35:43Speaker 1: just like people would say grabbing my smoke poll. You're
- 35:45Speaker 1: gonna go hunting? Yeah, I don't know what kind of
- 35:48Speaker 1: just stuck with my shotgun. I don't call my rifle
- 35:50Speaker 1: that quick quiz for you goodness? Um? Do you when
- 35:56Speaker 1: I say a smooth board, do you know what I'm
- 35:57Speaker 1: talking about? Yes? I do. Mag Ahead, you took hunter
- 36:00Speaker 1: safety bars and a shotgun and a rifle. It's called
- 36:03Speaker 1: a rifle because the boar is rifled. There's like ridges
- 36:06Speaker 1: in there. What are the ridges called? Oh, the land
- 36:11Speaker 1: like the land and the yeah, lands and grooves, lands
- 36:16Speaker 1: and grooves. Yeah, you know why. They originally started cutting
- 36:20Speaker 1: those in to help the bullet travel in a strai
- 36:24Speaker 1: line to prevent fouling. Black powder's messy. M So you
- 36:30Speaker 1: shoot and it would be so much fouling um that
- 36:36Speaker 1: it would be hard to load it. And so they
- 36:38Speaker 1: originally started cutting grooves in their as a place for
- 36:41Speaker 1: all that powder to go, all that powder residue. And
- 36:44Speaker 1: then you realize you could get along, You could get
- 36:46Speaker 1: more groove by cutting them in spirals. I started throwing
- 36:52Speaker 1: a spin on that bullet and then people were like,
- 36:55Speaker 1: uh huh, comes out very stable. I just learned, and
- 37:00Speaker 1: then again that I didn't know before and didn't know
- 37:03Speaker 1: that that was the original intent. I started podcasts called
- 37:06Speaker 1: gun Talk. Um. Okay, so you want to switch over
- 37:11Speaker 1: to the smooth boar. Yeah, because I wanted real life practice. Yeah,
- 37:17Speaker 1: we were getting close to game time. We gotta get
- 37:20Speaker 1: the skills pumping And what was your impression of shooting? Um?
- 37:25Speaker 1: What was your guys impressions of shooting turkey targets with shotguns? Fun?
- 37:31Speaker 1: Not fun too much like loud noise and kicking. No,
- 37:34Speaker 1: it was fun it I mean I liked it better
- 37:36Speaker 1: than just the regular target. That's one of the heftiest
- 37:38Speaker 1: kicks out there. Yeah, turkey load twelve. Are you shooting
- 37:42Speaker 1: twenty gauge? But like, shooting a turkey load off of
- 37:44Speaker 1: shotgun is one of the healthier kicks on the market. Yeah,
- 37:47Speaker 1: and I've shot those same shotguns. They're shooting those same loads,
- 37:51Speaker 1: and it's that's not a walk in the park. Even
- 37:53Speaker 1: though it's twenty gauges. They pop you my brother's old girlfriend.
- 37:57Speaker 1: I told you this. She was shooting turkey loads and
- 37:59Speaker 1: she had a hammer cock shotgun, punched the whole right,
- 38:02Speaker 1: blow her eye through her skin with it, and then
- 38:04Speaker 1: his wife her collar bone shooting turkey loads. I was
- 38:08Speaker 1: so glad those those guys, both of those guys missed
- 38:14Speaker 1: the turkeys. Yeah, that's like say that like lingering in
- 38:21Speaker 1: the back of your head right for crying out loud?
- 38:25Speaker 1: What if I got myself into So you enjoyed shooting
- 38:29Speaker 1: at the targets? And what frustrations did you have? What
- 38:34Speaker 1: the I thing was like throwing me off because I'm
- 38:37Speaker 1: left more left eye dominant. I know you, yeah, really
- 38:40Speaker 1: are really struggled with that. Why why did you Van's
- 38:44Speaker 1: Wall want you guys to shoot if you're left eye dominant.
- 38:49Speaker 1: Why was he wanting you to shoot right handed? He
- 38:51Speaker 1: gave us the option, like when we started to share
- 38:54Speaker 1: with him what the frustration was and not being able
- 38:57Speaker 1: to keep that left eye close. It's my issue is
- 39:00Speaker 1: it takes a while to set up right if you're
- 39:02Speaker 1: not used to the position you're supposed to be in,
- 39:04Speaker 1: how to hold the gun, aiming, and just getting comfortable
- 39:08Speaker 1: before you shoot. So my left eye would be closed
- 39:11Speaker 1: for a while before I was like ready to shoot,
- 39:13Speaker 1: and then by the time I was ready to shoot,
- 39:15Speaker 1: my left eye was like fighting me so hard to
- 39:18Speaker 1: open that I felt like it was interfering with my
- 39:21Speaker 1: ability to like effectively aim. And he was like, well,
- 39:24Speaker 1: you can shoot left handed, but the idea of shooting
- 39:27Speaker 1: left handed felt a little bit intimidating to me because
- 39:29Speaker 1: I'm technically right handed, so the idea of like switching
- 39:32Speaker 1: over to the other side felt like I'm learning something
- 39:35Speaker 1: new altogether. Let's not throw like an entirely new factor
- 39:38Speaker 1: into the situation. Let's just figure out how to like
- 39:41Speaker 1: make this left eye cooperate a little bit more. Yeah,
- 39:45Speaker 1: And then you didn't weren't comfortable shoot with both eyes open. No,
- 39:49Speaker 1: I can't like see what I mean, you can see
- 39:51Speaker 1: with Boza is open, but you can't like narrow in
- 39:53Speaker 1: in the way that you want to be narrowing in.
- 39:56Speaker 1: Because he would tell us exactly where we were supposed
- 39:59Speaker 1: to be aiming, especially as we were like initially patterning
- 40:02Speaker 1: the shotgun like and with both eyes open, I felt
- 40:04Speaker 1: like I couldn't get to that specific of a spot totally.
- 40:09Speaker 1: I could only get there and both eyes open would
- 40:11Speaker 1: only work if they were shooting left handed, being left
- 40:14Speaker 1: eye dominant. We even toyed around with Tracy. We toyed
- 40:19Speaker 1: around making her a special pair of sunglasses. I feel
- 40:22Speaker 1: like I would like that, Like I feel like the
- 40:25Speaker 1: idea of like the fight, the battle with that left eye,
- 40:28Speaker 1: like like with a patch over it. It like creates
- 40:31Speaker 1: an ease. It's like I don't have to pay attention
- 40:34Speaker 1: to that fight when I'm when I am. I don't
- 40:37Speaker 1: know why I fight with it so much, And maybe
- 40:38Speaker 1: it would just get stronger and better over time the
- 40:40Speaker 1: more I do it. It would mostly I think most
- 40:43Speaker 1: experts would tell you, though, that since you're at this
- 40:46Speaker 1: beginning stage, you should be going left hand. And I
- 40:48Speaker 1: think that's really She's got the same thing going on.
- 40:54Speaker 1: And we did it this past time turkey hunting. We
- 40:57Speaker 1: just I did a pair of sunglass and just put
- 41:00Speaker 1: something I did tape. We did something anyways to cover
- 41:03Speaker 1: her left eye, and she shot great. You know, but
- 41:07Speaker 1: I think I'm just gonna tell her she's gotta she
- 41:09Speaker 1: mother left him probably more advantageous to get her into
- 41:13Speaker 1: it while she's yeah, the same for you, it's like
- 41:16Speaker 1: you only shot a gun now times. It's weird though
- 41:20Speaker 1: as an adult this is like an overarching thought, but
- 41:22Speaker 1: like as weird as an adult getting into something new,
- 41:25Speaker 1: especially something like this that is so um specific and
- 41:29Speaker 1: so nuanced and like it's not it requires like a
- 41:32Speaker 1: really built out specific skill set. Like it's very unnerving
- 41:38Speaker 1: because the idea of like starting something as an adult
- 41:41Speaker 1: and like, am I going to be able to do it?
- 41:42Speaker 1: Am I not going to be able to do it?
- 41:44Speaker 1: Nobody likes the idea of failing. Like you want to
- 41:46Speaker 1: start something and be good at it right away. And
- 41:49Speaker 1: that's like a whole mental journey that I went on
- 41:54Speaker 1: me too, not letting you guys down, wanting to like,
- 41:58Speaker 1: you know, live up to the expectation ends, all that
- 42:00Speaker 1: kind of stuff. I didn't have any expectations. Of course
- 42:04Speaker 1: you did, no, he told me. He said, I expect
- 42:09Speaker 1: nothing from these people. Um we Yanni, who was it? No?
- 42:16Speaker 1: I proposed, no one of us did that you'd block
- 42:23Speaker 1: your eye out. M Yanni thought you'd have a patch
- 42:28Speaker 1: so cute that you'd carry an eye patch. And I
- 42:32Speaker 1: proposed maybe will take and make you, um take your
- 42:36Speaker 1: shades and block the eye out. But then I thought,
- 42:41Speaker 1: did you, but you like shooting like that, right. I
- 42:45Speaker 1: liked it a lot, a lot, But then I thought
- 42:50Speaker 1: there's so much going on in the Turkey Woods that
- 42:56Speaker 1: I felt that it was um did it was just
- 43:00Speaker 1: like yet another thing, Oh I need to put my
- 43:03Speaker 1: special glasses, Like, hey, he's coming, and he's coming hot,
- 43:09Speaker 1: where's the eye patch? Hold on? Tell him to just
- 43:14Speaker 1: stay right there, hold on. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, you didn't
- 43:19Speaker 1: like that idea, which was a little heartbreaking and disappointing.
- 43:22Speaker 1: I understand why you you vetoed it. It just was
- 43:27Speaker 1: so nice to shoot, not battling this blinking thing that
- 43:31Speaker 1: kind of keeps opening. Yeah. Yeah, it would give you
- 43:34Speaker 1: a headache when you're sitting there blinking. And yeah, just
- 43:37Speaker 1: like every now and then you'd see more, I'd see less,
- 43:39Speaker 1: and then I felt like I'd have to like readjust
- 43:41Speaker 1: my aim because now I was off a little bit.
- 43:43Speaker 1: Like it just it flustrated me a little bit, honestly.
- 43:47Speaker 1: And when you're shooting is different too, because you're shooting
- 43:49Speaker 1: at the range. You have on your protection which you're
- 43:54Speaker 1: supposed to actually hunt with two interesting because they never
- 43:58Speaker 1: really cover that and and hunter safety and you don't
- 44:02Speaker 1: see that in real life application, you're supposed to have
- 44:05Speaker 1: your protection on. You know, I just put plugs and
- 44:08Speaker 1: you wouldn't put like a headset on your shoot with headsets,
- 44:12Speaker 1: you're shooting with glasses. It's just different. In Europe they
- 44:16Speaker 1: always everybody's got like actual muffs on their they're like
- 44:19Speaker 1: not hunting, but when they decide to shoot, they put
- 44:23Speaker 1: them once they decided. When I guide it, I used
- 44:25Speaker 1: to just wear a pair I think they made by
- 44:27Speaker 1: Howard Light. It's like a a lot of guys wearing
- 44:30Speaker 1: like on the job site, like an orange band that
- 44:32Speaker 1: goes around your neck like a shoe. And I just
- 44:35Speaker 1: got plugs and I used to wear that on my
- 44:37Speaker 1: neck and then you would put them in before as
- 44:40Speaker 1: soon as the client was about to shoot. I just
- 44:41Speaker 1: could Remy and cal Remy and Kell are very good
- 44:45Speaker 1: about your protection. Remy, Uh, where's one of those old
- 44:51Speaker 1: You know, it looks like a headset, but it's you
- 44:53Speaker 1: know what I'm talking about. It looks like what am
- 44:55Speaker 1: I getting? Net man, It's like your plugs on a
- 44:58Speaker 1: spring that you wear around your neck and what I
- 45:00Speaker 1: just described. But what is the world? But what is that?
- 45:03Speaker 1: If you're gonna look him up? What would you describe
- 45:05Speaker 1: it as, oh boy, they call it your pro or
- 45:09Speaker 1: is that something totally different? You know? I'm saying, like, well,
- 45:13Speaker 1: how do you describe a headset that plugs your ears? Yeah,
- 45:17Speaker 1: it looks like a big plastic horseshoe that has ear plugs.
- 45:20Speaker 1: I'll just just like an industry word for it. He's
- 45:23Speaker 1: real good about putting those in, and Cal wears him
- 45:26Speaker 1: around his neck. And when we were turkey hunting in Texas,
- 45:29Speaker 1: he sits down and no joke, we're calling to a turkey.
- 45:31Speaker 1: He don't know joke, puts the turkey, puts the ear
- 45:33Speaker 1: plugs in his ear? He does, but then can he
- 45:35Speaker 1: still like, that's why I can't do This' got special
- 45:38Speaker 1: high end ones that don't change. Yeah, Like you go
- 45:43Speaker 1: to a shooting range, man, it's rules. At a shooting range,
- 45:46Speaker 1: he protection rounded by a ton of people who are shooting.
- 45:50Speaker 1: Hearing protection, I protection. Now, we always like I always
- 45:53Speaker 1: wear my regular sunglasses and not but I've never got
- 45:59Speaker 1: in trouble for it. But they make like ballistic sunglasses.
- 46:04Speaker 1: But we were rightliar sunglasses And you need to talk
- 46:06Speaker 1: about what happened to you. Yeah, Howard Light just calls
- 46:09Speaker 1: it They're Quiet Band is the name of their products,
- 46:13Speaker 1: be honest. Um, So here's the thing where we're in
- 46:15Speaker 1: a little bit of a tricky ground because they're not
- 46:19Speaker 1: meant for this. But I don't know, like is it
- 46:24Speaker 1: We don't really know. They just say I protection, Yeah,
- 46:27Speaker 1: it's certainly better than not having any on as in
- 46:31Speaker 1: my case, certainly, you know, and I would think that
- 46:34Speaker 1: you definitely want to wear the plastic lenses and not
- 46:37Speaker 1: the glass lenses because glass could shatter and hurt you.
- 46:41Speaker 1: But um, yeah, I was shooting a gun while back,
- 46:45Speaker 1: and uh, I don't want to get into details about
- 46:47Speaker 1: this because it's like a chance that I'm a little
- 46:51Speaker 1: bit to blame. Like I'm like, I'm not blaming yet
- 46:56Speaker 1: I have to blame, yeah, but I'm mostly to aim
- 47:00Speaker 1: because I'm the one that loaded the rifle. But I
- 47:03Speaker 1: put a seven mm O eight into a two seventy
- 47:10Speaker 1: w s M, and uh, the difference in caliber and
- 47:14Speaker 1: dimensions of those two bullets is uh not much about
- 47:19Speaker 1: a You're going from I put to eighty into two
- 47:25Speaker 1: seventy point to eight zero into point to seven zero.
- 47:29Speaker 1: The bullets still exited the gun, actually still hit the target.
- 47:33Speaker 1: It wasn't. I mean, it was only I don't know,
- 47:35Speaker 1: eight inches off of bulls eye um. But that created
- 47:39Speaker 1: enough pressure to you could say, blow up the gun
- 47:43Speaker 1: that I was shooting. And it happened to be a
- 47:46Speaker 1: left handed gun. I was shooting it right handed and
- 47:49Speaker 1: had a shot a left handed the all the blowout
- 47:52Speaker 1: of the gun would have gone away from my face.
- 47:55Speaker 1: But because if you think about the way a rifle
- 47:58Speaker 1: is built, the you know, the bowl opens on the
- 48:01Speaker 1: right hand side of a gun, that's for a right
- 48:04Speaker 1: handed shooter, and it's made that way, so if you
- 48:07Speaker 1: do have a blowout, it's going away from your head
- 48:09Speaker 1: and your face right and so in this case, it
- 48:12Speaker 1: was made to go to myself to the left of
- 48:16Speaker 1: the gun, and that's where my face was. And so
- 48:20Speaker 1: basically like the trigger assembly snapped, the stock had two
- 48:25Speaker 1: big cracks in it. It blew out the bottom plate
- 48:29Speaker 1: um and then yeah, there's actually a chunk of it.
- 48:35Speaker 1: Was a Model seventy and one of the bars that
- 48:38Speaker 1: runs along the bolt came was dislodged and actually raked
- 48:42Speaker 1: my shoulder. There's a picture of that man there, and
- 48:47Speaker 1: came off smoking hot. I got a scar on my shoulder.
- 48:51Speaker 1: My blame is this well kind of finish, Yeah, but
- 48:55Speaker 1: I feel like you're like you're absolving me a little bit. Okay,
- 48:59Speaker 1: no fish story. Well, thank goodness that. Um. I try
- 49:06Speaker 1: to I try to always wear glasses when I'm shooting, right,
- 49:10Speaker 1: but I didn't have my for some reason. My range
- 49:12Speaker 1: bag didn't have my eye protection, so I was wearing
- 49:14Speaker 1: my coast of sunglasses and it ended up when I
- 49:19Speaker 1: went to the doctor just to get checked out. Later,
- 49:22Speaker 1: the picture looks a lot worse. I definitely had a
- 49:24Speaker 1: puffy face from it, but there's a lot of like
- 49:26Speaker 1: carbon blast is sort of like how I've been describing it,
- 49:30Speaker 1: that it kind of pockmarked my face. One side of
- 49:34Speaker 1: my face definitely made it swell up a little bit.
- 49:36Speaker 1: But the doctor couldn't find actually any chunks of anything
- 49:40Speaker 1: embedded in my face or my neck. I can tell
- 49:44Speaker 1: you that my coast is definitely I feel like, I
- 49:48Speaker 1: don't know if I would have lost any vision, but
- 49:51Speaker 1: they had a scratch and a and a and a
- 49:53Speaker 1: crack in them, and when I took them off, you
- 49:56Speaker 1: can very clearly see the outline. And I'm just very
- 49:59Speaker 1: happy that my eyes did not take that shot, you know,
- 50:03Speaker 1: like the way that the rest of my face did
- 50:05Speaker 1: when we were shoot. Was I wearing my souped up
- 50:07Speaker 1: yellow lens coasts? You were wearing some sort of coast
- 50:10Speaker 1: you are I think you were wearing the ones that
- 50:12Speaker 1: are like kind of like a camouflage patterns. Yeah, but
- 50:14Speaker 1: the light lens I can't remember. That's those are like,
- 50:19Speaker 1: that's meant to be my hunting ones because the lens
- 50:22Speaker 1: isn't that dark wearing in low light conditions, for low
- 50:26Speaker 1: light conditions. But then when I got him in Camo,
- 50:29Speaker 1: just so I think I just saw this. I have
- 50:31Speaker 1: a bunch of the aren't camel got him in Camo
- 50:33Speaker 1: and got the light kind of yellowy lens. So it's
- 50:36Speaker 1: like if the camel was property functioning, you'd think that
- 50:41Speaker 1: I just had yellow lenses. The yellow lenses were just
- 50:44Speaker 1: floating in the middle of what are those? That's yeah,
- 50:52Speaker 1: that's what I have. Though I typically just wear um,
- 50:57Speaker 1: I typically wear regular ones, but wearing and at the range,
- 51:00Speaker 1: I've never gotten grief for having I think it was
- 51:03Speaker 1: glad to have something on. But the plastic lens glass
- 51:07Speaker 1: lens thing isn't something I thought about too much because
- 51:09Speaker 1: I have both. But my camel ones have a plastic lens,
- 51:14Speaker 1: the glass lens, I like. But then when your kids
- 51:16Speaker 1: fire them across the tile floor. Yeah, I think, And
- 51:21Speaker 1: as far as I've always understood, because I owned glass
- 51:23Speaker 1: coast Is back in the day when I was guiding
- 51:26Speaker 1: a bunch um they, I think that the lens itself
- 51:30Speaker 1: is a little more durable like it just you just
- 51:32Speaker 1: won't get that um sort of that buff that kind
- 51:35Speaker 1: of happens on on a plastic lens eventually. Um. But again, yeah,
- 51:39Speaker 1: if you drop them, those plastic lens is oftentimes bounced
- 51:43Speaker 1: back and you put them back on your head and
- 51:45Speaker 1: go on about your business. Where you dropped those glass
- 51:48Speaker 1: onto the tile floor, like you said, and you're probably
- 51:51Speaker 1: gonna be out a lens. You know. I was in
- 51:53Speaker 1: Mexico once and I had my glass lens ones and
- 51:58Speaker 1: one of my kids just dropped my tale flour and
- 52:02Speaker 1: I sent them back in. Um, send him back into coast.
- 52:06Speaker 1: So they fixed him and send him back to me.
- 52:08Speaker 1: No problems where him for however long Again, then one
- 52:12Speaker 1: day my kids just standing there holding them with a
- 52:16Speaker 1: broken lens, like I didn't get to see, like how
- 52:18Speaker 1: he did it? Different? This is a different kid. This
- 52:22Speaker 1: is my younger one, Matthew, just like like walking around
- 52:24Speaker 1: with broken sunglasses. So he probably took a hammer and
- 52:27Speaker 1: hit him, sent him in like for the sent him
- 52:31Speaker 1: in for the warranty. They sent him back. Still have them,
- 52:35Speaker 1: and you know it's like, bro, take care of your glass.
- 52:41Speaker 1: Didn't get any grief about it, um, But now I have.
- 52:45Speaker 1: Now when I'm going on trips, bring two pairs smart
- 52:50Speaker 1: my glass lens which I just like to look through,
- 52:54Speaker 1: and then I bring some plastic lens ones after to man,
- 52:58Speaker 1: especially on like the trips that we do when you
- 53:01Speaker 1: know you're gonna be out and about whether it's the
- 53:04Speaker 1: beach or the mountains or whatever like. And I think
- 53:08Speaker 1: that I've heard is this true that like lighter colored
- 53:11Speaker 1: eyes or contend to be more sensitive, very sensitive. I
- 53:15Speaker 1: don't know about very but like I definitely feel again,
- 53:18Speaker 1: I've been wearing nice sunglasses now for probably close to
- 53:21Speaker 1: twenty years of my life, and if I get caught
- 53:23Speaker 1: out there without them, it's no. I have the same problem,
- 53:27Speaker 1: Like I cannot if I have to drive and it's
- 53:29Speaker 1: sunny out, it is impossible for me to keep my
- 53:32Speaker 1: eyes open, like they want to close the sun kills
- 53:35Speaker 1: them for some reason. I always have to have sunglasses on.
- 53:39Speaker 1: Oh I think, yeah, I think the more you wear
- 53:41Speaker 1: the more it's painful when you don't know. Maybe that's
- 53:43Speaker 1: what it is. You just adjust appropriately. Remember the first
- 53:48Speaker 1: time everybody says closet, but it used to say coose
- 53:51Speaker 1: to del Mar, which is still the name, but that
- 53:53Speaker 1: people used to say it. I remember the first time
- 53:55Speaker 1: I had a pair of the nineteen six I think,
- 54:01Speaker 1: long as time ago. But yeah, I can't stand it now.
- 54:06Speaker 1: But you can't get kids to wear them. And I
- 54:10Speaker 1: feel that kids. Uh you know, I was every parent
- 54:13Speaker 1: now I was all worried about sunscreen on their kids
- 54:15Speaker 1: all the time. No one thought about that before. Now
- 54:17Speaker 1: you're supposed to put sunglasses on your kids, put sunscreen
- 54:19Speaker 1: on your kids. And I kind of like fight against
- 54:22Speaker 1: that a little bit. It's like bike helmets. Always feel
- 54:24Speaker 1: a little guilty not putting it on them, but a
- 54:26Speaker 1: little guilty putting it on them. I don't. I would
- 54:31Speaker 1: wear my bike helmet when I got blocked away from
- 54:34Speaker 1: the house, take it off and ditch it in the woods. Sony,
- 54:42Speaker 1: ow um, there we are. We're gonna make you a
- 54:44Speaker 1: blocked out pair of shades. Yeah, but you xenate it.
- 54:49Speaker 1: It just made you tough up and learn how to shoot.
- 54:52Speaker 1: That was that was a you know a little a
- 54:55Speaker 1: little taste into what the future. I think one of
- 54:59Speaker 1: the hardest parts was just the positioning. That was just
- 55:02Speaker 1: like I did not expect it to be such a
- 55:05Speaker 1: like I can't even like a slunchdown. Yeah, it didn't
- 55:09Speaker 1: took a long time for that to feel comfortable, but
- 55:11Speaker 1: Sneaky Peet made me feel very comfortable after like the
- 55:15Speaker 1: twentieth time. Yeah, let's get into the hunt, the big hunt.
- 55:20Speaker 1: Who wants to go first? Well, what's the question? What
- 55:24Speaker 1: did you feel about it? I asked you what you
- 55:26Speaker 1: felt about hunter safety, how did it go? What you
- 55:29Speaker 1: felt about learning to shoot? M hmm, Okay, let me
- 55:33Speaker 1: let me do this. Let's let's enter into the hunting part.
- 55:35Speaker 1: Like this, you just wanted your first hun correct? Is correct?
- 55:40Speaker 1: Tracy successfully somewhat? Tracy successfully, Maggie had a great success,
- 55:49Speaker 1: and that it was a great time. But no dead turkey. Okay. Um.
- 55:54Speaker 1: If I asked you, let's put it this way. If
- 55:57Speaker 1: I asked you five years ago, do you think you'll
- 56:01Speaker 1: ever be a turkey hunter? What would you have said no.
- 56:06Speaker 1: If I said, what if I said, do you aspire?
- 56:11Speaker 1: You aspire to be an American hunter? Probably now that
- 56:16Speaker 1: would be a no. And if you asked any single
- 56:19Speaker 1: person who knew me at that time, who know me
- 56:22Speaker 1: at some point, their answer would also have been no way.
- 56:26Speaker 1: I would agree with that. And when you pictured it, No,
- 56:29Speaker 1: I'm not asking you to go back at the time
- 56:30Speaker 1: and think and then imagine your impressions five years ago,
- 56:33Speaker 1: but leading up to this and you pictured it, it'll
- 56:38Speaker 1: be like this and this is what happened. This is
- 56:39Speaker 1: what'll feel like. How um, how accurate was your How
- 56:44Speaker 1: accurate was your pre assessment or whatever I'm trying to
- 56:49Speaker 1: say that, like how accurate like your your mind movie,
- 56:51Speaker 1: your vision of it? How accurate was your vision of it? UM?
- 56:55Speaker 1: I would say there were there were some parts that
- 56:58Speaker 1: were accurate, and there were some parts that were vastly inaccurate.
- 57:01Speaker 1: Like I don't think I had an expectation that, um,
- 57:07Speaker 1: like everybody says it's it's hard to find turkeys, I
- 57:10Speaker 1: don't think I had an expectation that we would be
- 57:12Speaker 1: challenged as much as we were. Like actually hearing a
- 57:15Speaker 1: gobble like it was rigorous, not only into fault. We're
- 57:24Speaker 1: the because no no blame set um. But more also
- 57:29Speaker 1: in terms of like for those first couple of days,
- 57:33Speaker 1: I also felt like there were moments where I was
- 57:36Speaker 1: like physically challenged in ways that I didn't expect to
- 57:40Speaker 1: be physically challenged. Like I'm not sure I expected to
- 57:43Speaker 1: be climbing up you know, trying to keep up with
- 57:47Speaker 1: you as you're running, Like I I thought, where did
- 57:50Speaker 1: I run? You were running, but you're just so like
- 57:53Speaker 1: you you do this all the time and you're so strong,
- 57:56Speaker 1: and like I don't do a lot of this stuff
- 57:58Speaker 1: very often, And so my physical capabilities were tested in
- 58:02Speaker 1: a way that I probably didn't anticipate or expect to
- 58:05Speaker 1: be tested in that way, Like climbing over deadfall, I
- 58:10Speaker 1: was like getting blow it down, like we had we
- 58:12Speaker 1: had to cross to like blow down. Yeah, Like it
- 58:14Speaker 1: was just like wow, like there is you know, you
- 58:17Speaker 1: have to really be in like strong physical shape to
- 58:20Speaker 1: be able to be successful at it was like a hillside.
- 58:22Speaker 1: And I even said, you, when people talk about dog hair,
- 58:25Speaker 1: this that's what they're talking about. And when people talk
- 58:29Speaker 1: about blowdown, that's what they're talking about. This dog hair blowdown,
- 58:36Speaker 1: which is like a hillside of Lodgepole Pine where they're
- 58:39Speaker 1: like still like very densely packed, and then they get
- 58:42Speaker 1: leveled in a they get leveled in a windstorm, and
- 58:46Speaker 1: man it makes a mess. Well and I just was like,
- 58:48Speaker 1: he makes it look so easy. So I like, you know,
- 58:51Speaker 1: headed in thinking, oh, I'm just following Steve, and then
- 58:54Speaker 1: I was like, oh, my goodness, is not that easy.
- 58:58Speaker 1: So you didn't picture that part? No, Yeah, there's nothing
- 59:01Speaker 1: in yoga class that prepared No. No, it's defferent. It's
- 59:09Speaker 1: a completely different type of physical demand or straight and
- 59:15Speaker 1: it's not like it's just for a short period of
- 59:18Speaker 1: time like there were times where from you know, first
- 59:21Speaker 1: thing in the morning until the evening, you're out and about. Yeah,
- 59:27Speaker 1: and it's not like you're just walking flat, you know,
- 59:29Speaker 1: like you're really kind of experiencing, you know, a really
- 59:33Speaker 1: diverse terrain, or at least we did. I feel you
- 59:36Speaker 1: experienced a very you know, a western turkey hunt where
- 59:40Speaker 1: people back east are gonna hear you talking about this.
- 59:43Speaker 1: And sure there's places in West Virginia and you know,
- 59:47Speaker 1: part of other parts of Appalachia that you know, people
- 59:50Speaker 1: climb some hills turkey hunting, but like, well, you guys
- 59:53Speaker 1: went through, especially the first afternoon we went out. I
- 59:56Speaker 1: mean we pretty much did like a little Elk hunt,
- 59:58Speaker 1: you know what I mean, you've been same kind of
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: country and same stuff you would have covered going on
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: at Elk in the afternoon, you know, we slid on
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: my belly, so yeah, we had ye cut across a
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: couple of creeks. I was crawling on the way back
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: up Steve hillsides up and down. Maggie, you're a marathon runner.
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: Have you ran You've ran marathons and like mega trail runs.
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: Did you didn't find those hard walking around for turkeys?
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: Did you know? I think the physical part I was.
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: I felt like, yeah, I'm excited about this, but I
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: want to see if I keep honest and legs. Yeah,
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: I was excited about that. I think I kind of
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: had an idea in my head about what that was
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: gonna be. But I have an advantage, I'm like Tracy
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: does because I edit. You know, I've edited hunts. I've
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: seen what you guys do. So I was like, I
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: think I know it kind of goes into this, you know,
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: like I don't know everything, but physical part. I was like,
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: I think I got for the most part. And I
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: know you like chastise me for saying, like everyone says
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: they're always prepared for and they're not. And I was like, oh, yeah,
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: well that's like the two things. The two things everyone
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: says they're gonna do and don't that they're going to
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: break their boots in when I wore them to the office.
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: Always they're gonna like their boots and they're gonna like whatever.
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: Get in shape means I probably it was in pretty
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: decent shape. Oh yeah, you were. I mean you and
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: I were waiting on the two camera was impressive. What
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: was the thing that was most um, what was the
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: thing Maggie that was most surprising about actually going out hunting,
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: Like something that as much as you had exposure to it,
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: Like what was the thing And you're like, oh, I
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: get it now or I didn't picture this being like this.
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: The emotional side to it, Like, I mean, I was drained.
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: Every emotion I had in my body was put out there.
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: Tell me more. I mean, it was excitement, then there
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: was like disappointment at certain points, frustration, then I felt pressure.
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: Then when I had my opportunity, I felt guilt and sadness.
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: But then they were like came back and I was
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: like one of vengeance. I mean, and then there was
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: times too, but I was like I just loved it,
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: Like I really was out there and I was like,
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: this is like not on a trail like hiking. I
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: don't know if I want to go to like a
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: trailhead now and just go for a hike. Like I
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: loved it. We were just like off trail just moving
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: through country like that was just listening but then stopping
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: and just looking at stuff because the trail is such
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: a different experience and out there and immersed and I
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: like loved that part about it. Like that was just
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: because like you learn you see how the animals are
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: running contours and like the animals don't move across the
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: landscape and asked backwards way they very much like go
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: with the flow of the landscape. You know. It's cool
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: to see totally and just like learning from the honest too.
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: I was like, wow, you know so much, you know,
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: and like a lot of this stuff you don't get
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: to see when you're editing. You know, you can get
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: a really capture emotion. You have to feel it when
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: you're having emotions. Did you remind yourself that like we're like,
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: but it's just a game, or did it feel sort
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: of more real? You know? I mean, because how do
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: you untangle it? You know, it's like a pastime, but
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: but it brings out emotions that a lot of pastimes
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: do not. I mean, people who play golf get pissed
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: whatever they miss a shot, can get really mad, and
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: they like bend their golf clubs. So it's like legit anger.
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: But I feel like it doesn't have that. It doesn't
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: and not being a golfer. Maybe I'm wrong, but it's
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: hard for me to picture bringing about the full suite
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: of emotions that come out. Yeah, I didn't expect that. Definitely,
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: not a hundred rounds in my day and there's no
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: not even close. I can tell you running a marathon.
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: I was like when I did that, it's like, oh,
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: it's the hardest thing. Is just an emotional journey. No,
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: So what do you think gets attributed to then that
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: it's so vastly deeper and more complex. I don't know
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: if I can really answer that for you. I don't
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: know that it just surprised me. I'm still processed. Yeah, totally,
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: I did. That is just like came out of left field. Yeah.
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: My brother describes it, um that he has that he
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: gets very lusty. Yeah, he wants like because he's trying
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: to find the right word to sort of capture how
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: badly he wants success. Oh. I definitely felt that. It's
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: like he feels that the word lust almost does more justice. Yeah,
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: I would agree. So lusty for like elk or turkeys
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: or whatever. It's just you just want to get that
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: thing and be successful so bad. Yeah. And I think
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: what added to that is the turkey beer Tracy. And
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: I mean, there wasn't very many gobbles, but we heard
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: him on the first day and I'll never forget that.
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: And I came back and it's like I heard him,
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: and you guys we're like, are you sure. I don't
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: think there's any other noise. It sounds like a turkey
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: out there. But I'll never forget that. Talk about your opportunity,
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: tell us about your opportunity. It's like still heartbreaking. Um,
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: we got their first light a little bit before a
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: little bit before for sure, you guys had named the
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: turkey m hm, sneaky. Yeah, we'd already been I think
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: that was the third morning that we have been on him.
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: We had hunted him like literally almost most of the
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: prior two days. I mean, and you know where he roosts.
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: He makes noise from the roost, hits the ground, does
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: some gobbles, but will never come in. Yeah, we knew
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: like his general zone. We sort of like we knew
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: where he dusted himself even, I mean, we like knew
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: his territory. But you hadn't had to experience yet at
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: a distance. Maybe I think you did well, No, you
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: did that first morning you saw him down. He saw
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: a glimpse of him cut across the hill. And that's
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: you know, knowing that information and knowing like the layout
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: of where he was roosting. We knew that at least
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: twice he had gone, you know, looking up the hill,
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: he had gone to the left and kind of gone
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: down into this bowl. And that, you know, that's why
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: we decided to set up there as opposed to on
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: the ridge like the morning before, because he didn't come
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: down the ridge towards us, kind of cut across the
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: toe of the hill and went down into a into
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: a bowl. Yeah, he evaded us. Oh man, he's good
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: at evading. Yeah, so your opportunity there we are out
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: in the woods sitting all set up. Honest, has got
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: the decoys like how far? Yeah, like right where we
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: know he's gonna walk, and it's just the waiting game. Now.
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: My heart is just like in my throat, I'm like
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: sweaty much over a hundred yards from his roost tree.
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: And it was a full hour until and luckily he
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: got He would gobb well every five ten minutes from
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: where he was, so we knew he hadn't drifted off
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: in a different direction. Were you calling him or he
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: would We had already I had already called enough the
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: prior two days, and I was not gonna make his peep.
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: So how were you playing on him finding you? Because
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: we knew his direction to going the other way off
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: this this ridge? Um, it was kind of hellhole ish,
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: like there was more blowdowns, it was steep. It just
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: wasn't And we had heard him in this bowl and
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: wash him go into this bowl and just had like
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: he's been spending a bunch of time in this bowl.
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: So they just seen the natural path he's gonna eventually take.
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: You were ambustion them, Yeah, yeah, yeah, yep, we're all
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: set up and just give him the silent treatment. Yeah, yep. Yep, yep, yep,
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: he's going to go off in some other direction. We
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: at this point I figured he was probably a little
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: smart or like new something. Yeah, but I will never
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: forget when I first saw the hen come and she
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: was I mean two hands and they were huge and
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: puffed out, and I was like, oh my god, and
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: she were like no, like you're like kind of fenders.
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: They were like big. I'm just remembering like they were
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: side by side in front of him, basically like and
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: I was like, oh my god, is that the collar.
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: I didn't know. I hadn't seen him at that point,
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: and you you remember he said you will know. And
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: when he came through, I was just like in my head,
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: I was like, I could not believe that that's how
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: they strutt around the forest when we are not around,
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: Like this is just like what these animals do. That
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: like weird to me, thought, But last spring I called
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: in a turkey for a guy who never hunted turkeys,
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: and when the turkey showed up, we couldn't see very far,
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: like off in one direction. All sudden he's just like
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: there and remember before he shot, he goes, Oh my god.
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: That's kind of how I felt because also, here's this
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: like absurd blue head coming through the you know. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: it was. He's all puffed up, you know, with his ladies.
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: And then he came in and est was like, are
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: you ready? And he called and the hens looked at
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: directly at us, did not give a shit about the decoys. Yeah,
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: that was my mistake. I mean, retrospectively, I should have
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: not called. You know, we always we talked about not
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: shooting him in strut because the head is more compact.
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: He's kind of tucked into his body, right, and so
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: if he's just standing there and his head is wrecked
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: and up, the targets bigger. It's it's clear away from
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: the body. It should be easier to hit, you know.
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: And he's at twenty yards coming and strutting. And at
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: the time when I said so, he just happens to
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: be coming through the woods at twenty yards. Well, dude,
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: like I said, moving quicker slow, I mean, understand what
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: you're saying. He's like they're just fake walking, like they're
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: gonna feed. Well, once he saw the decoy, he was
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: probably moving a little bit quicker at the decoy, and
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: you tried to give him a call or an alarm
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: putt oh, no, I just gave him just a couple
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: of the alps, and the hands were like, I'm out
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: of here. Yeah, the hands heard that, and we're like,
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: that didn't come from those two hands I'm looking at.
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: That came from up the hill twenty yards, you know.
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: They just spun one eight went back the way they came.
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: And of course he's sort of following gobbling the whole time.
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: And every time I call, I'm like, I continue to
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: call now because he's but again, there's a stump that
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: when I set the decoys, I was didn't see like
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: see the stump and go, oh, that's going to cause
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: an issue. But he went behind the stump, came out
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: on the other side. I called, and he I mean
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: he turned and got behind that stump so fast, and
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: then coming out on the other side of the stump,
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: he was he had like definitely had some giddey up going,
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: And in hindsight, you feel like you should have gotten
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: a couple of cracks off. Maybe yeah, maybe isn't he
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: was strutting? Sure, No, I should have just had you
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: shoot him. Listen, I know about that whole thing. Not
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: doing that. I think that is just I think that
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: is some b s personally twenty yards Yeah, just shoot? Yes,
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: I knew it. I mean I was sad and upset.
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: Did he feel your head full of that? Not to
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: shoot him when he's in strut? We had talked about that,
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: of course. Yeah, why do you think we're in this
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: predicament right now? I don't know if she can't she
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: arrived at it naturally. Oh no, no, no they didn't.
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: They didn't teach that her safety Like, oh, one last
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: thing class, never shoot him in strut? Are you aware
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: of this seth the whole not shooting him in strut movement? Well,
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: I always tried to like not shoot him in struct
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: you know, but why well just because like, um, I
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: don't know, you have a better chance of hitting me
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: press me, um, And like I've I've shot turkeys in
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: the strap before and just like totally blue there, fan
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: apart and like all sorts of stuff, you know. But
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: if it comes down to it, I have no problem
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: with it. Yeah, no, if if everyone knows what's up.
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: Like while I was something, my friend Jared Faint because
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: he you know, he's a he's been he's a seasoned
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: turkey hunter. And we had a turkey come in, and
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: I knew that he was getting ready to shoot the
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: turkey and turkeys in full Stratt and I gave the
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: turkey up an alarm put and he lifted his head
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: up and he shot. But that's because I know that
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: he's like a guy who's been shooting turkeys his whole life. Yeah,
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: this year, I was calling a turkey in for Rick,
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: and uh he the turkey never left Strutt except for
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: when he would gobble, which is all that's a risk
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: a little, that's a risky shot, you know, just shooting
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: when he when he gobbles. But I made a call
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: in a turkey gobble, and Rick shot him when when
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: he gobbled, just because it was the only time his
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: head would leave, you know, being tucked up against his body. Yeah.
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: But so there he wanders off unscathed, and you had
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: an emotional outpouring. Pull my hat down over my eyes
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: and to adrenaline left my body and I was vibrating.
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: Did you get a chill? Adrenaline left your body? Man?
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: But you know what's real when you get the chill.
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: And in my head, I just kept replaying and be
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: like now now, now, now, I just like which someone
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: would have just whispered like now, but that was just
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: my you know, it was everything I did not expect
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: it to be. I thought I was prepared after all
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: the setups in your mind, in your mind movie, you
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: didn't picture that being something that would happen. And then
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: Tracy had something happened in her thing like even just
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: you saying that makes my heart began beating fast again. Okay,
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: talk about your opportunity which you capitalized on. So we
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: had been I mean this was this was basically the
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: first day. I think it was day four, the first
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: day where we actually had heard a gobble like we
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: had been kind of trying to find birds for a
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: long time. We hunted three I think we hunted three days.
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: I heard one gobble in three days. You heard zero gobbles.
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: Have we hunted three days? Yeah? I think so. And
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: we went to we handed three days on all on
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: forest land, national forest land, hunting three days on national
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: forest I never heard of gobel. And then went to
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: a private parcel, went to a private farm parcel and
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: behold and behold, lo and behold, we we found some birds,
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: which I mean, having spent that amount of time without
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: seeing any birds, like the change and emotion and the
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: change and feeling that you feel physically. I was like,
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: oh my god, we're here, this is we're getting close.
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: This is go time. And I think not only like
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: do you start to think about how is this going
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: to play out? Am I going to know what to do?
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: Thinking about what you guys had taught us, like just
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: making sure that like everything was like in check. And
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: I think you anticipate that it's all going to kind
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: of happen exactly like you anticipated happening, and I'm prepared,
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: and then you know that doesn't happen, and you know
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: you're kind of in this situation where, um, you know,
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: you're outside of your comfort zone and the intensity of
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: it all is a lot to handle. Our turkey we
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: we we were actually about to head inside because it
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: was starting to pour rain, and I was shocked actually
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: that Steve had kind of said, you know what, I
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: think we should go inside for a little while. I
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: was like, really, Stephen, I wouldn't say we should go
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: inside for a little while. Yeah, Well I didn't wanna.
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: I'm trying to you know, I don't want to sell
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: you short, but I'm trying to make it be that
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: you're having a decent time, right, which I absolutely was.
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: And then literally upon completion of you finishing that sentence,
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: we heard a gobble. Oh, the hen came in. Hand
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: started and we started communicating with the hen and she
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: came out and she was a little feisty. She was
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: a little feisty bad. I was shocked. She she marched
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: right up to the decoys, kind of had our little
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: moment with them, like she was like, what's happening over here?
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: And then she was like nothing, I'm not interested in
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: and off she went. She's like, hey, you're not alive,
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: but she didn't. I was so surprised because she was like,
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: you're not alive. I'm moving on. She wasn't like what
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: is this? She was like, this is a little different.
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: I've seen him be baffled by it sometimes, like kind
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: of birds will attack it totally. And I also last
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: year had this really amazing experience of watching the hand
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: come up to one and just purring at it and
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: pecking at it. Really yeah, five minutes, really five minutes.
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: That must have been incredible. The stage interest saying yeah
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: and got irritated with it. Fascinating. Yeah, she was. She
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: had bigger, bigger things. Actually, five minutes, felt like yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: And that was the first bird we had really seen.
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: We'd obviously seen some birds and other capacities, but like
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: that was the first bird we'd actually seen. Where we
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: were set up, we were kind of in a different mindset,
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: if you will, Like I felt like we were kind
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: of in go time. So then you know, it starts
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: to get real. Then all of a sudden, and I'm
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: thinking through my head because the day before, Steve was
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: like when you see a turkey, you do not move
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: an inch, not an inch. So I'm like, you know,
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: I definitely don't want to be the one that f
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: everything up. So I'm thinking in my mind all the
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: things that you told me that I'm making sure, I'm
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: I'm good, I'm prepared. And then we've been here to
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: Gobbler Kindest and he was obviously with some hands. Can
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: you kind of hear him go back and forth and
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: you never got closer. You can make him gobble, but
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: it didn't do any good. And I never knew exactly
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: where it was, Like We're all kind of like, where
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: is that coming from? Like you weren't totally like some
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: couple hundred yards away some direction. But then all of
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: a sudden, he's like, it's like, oh, he's coming. Oh yeah,
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: And then all of a sudden there was one gobble
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: where literally he could have been sitting in my lap.
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: Like I was like, that is so close. I was
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: loud as anything but double heard around the world. Absolutely yeah,
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: And it was so loud. There's where guys, I want
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: to like talk a little bit because I'm a big
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: part of your mishap. It wasn't even a misshap. We
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: keep calling, I keep calling to miss that, but we
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: felt to me, I felt, but it wasn't. Actually I
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: can think he's going to take the line of travel
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: and come from our to our left, like the hen
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: did sort of kind of like calling from where she
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: was calling um and then the gobble herd around the
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: world felt like it was in my lap literally, but
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: he wasn't in my lap, and I couldn't see him
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: in front of me, and I was so confused. And
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: the only place I could think that it was was
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: like clear across the fielding, So I'm like, how could
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: it start? A blind sign behind us is solid and
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: to the right is blind side. So it's just like
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: it feels like he's like yelling in my ear. But Mike,
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: where is he right? And I'm like, he, is it
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: at all possible that it is somehow across this field?
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: And it sounded like that, and so I'm staring trying
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: to find it. And then out of the corner of
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: my eye here running at us, running at us as
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: a turkey like sprinting, Yes, as fast as the turkey
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: runs yeah. And then and I like and sets down there.
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: We got a camera guy down there. A turkey running
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: is not a good sign. Typically, typically not a good sign.
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: And in the second that I registered this happening instead
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: of there's there's two thoughts, and like they're racing, and
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: there's a thought in my head that was behind in
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: the race, which is the true thought that he's running
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: up to the decoy. He's so jacked up that he's
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: literally running to the decoy. But that thought is lagging
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: behind in this race. To the four of my mind,
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: it is losing the race. The thought that's like that
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: turkey is out of here because something spooked it. But
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: he's extremely close, close close enough where I say shoot
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: the turkey. And all all we had prepared for was
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: this stationary, this turkey that's standing there at thirty yards
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: perfect to a box, right exactly as prepared to its
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: perfect scenario. I knew exactly what I was supposed to
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: be aiming. I feel like I would have a little
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: more time. It didn't really work out. It's hard to
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: recreate the running turkey in you know, well, maybe somebody
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: should come up with that, because it would be nice
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: to have some experience with a moving target. That was
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: my hardest thing too. It was like, wow, setting up
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: and trying to move would not move a lot. Because
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: if you're trying not to speak him. Yeah, if you
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: have met anyone, they'll tell you never shoot at a
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: moving turkey. But I got I have the lust. I
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: have the lust, and I can see why, Like I
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: kind of felt like I even had the lust, and
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: this was my first freaking time, Like I can see
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: where that that's like a very real reality totally, especially
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: after you feel like you've spent so much time grinding
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: for this moment. Like I was like, here he is,
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: and if we had waited a second, he would have
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: stood there for thirty seconds a minute, strutting, kicking that thing,
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: nuzzling it. But instead I just like, but I will
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: tell you, just it doesn't even make sense that I
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: miss judged because he didn't have his head positioned. How
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: spook Turkey does. His head was tucked. I just screwed up,
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: but I was grateful I screwed up to though, Steve,
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: because I didn't shoot as well as I would have
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: liked to do. That was a chip shot. I am.
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: I am working on my status, but it is clear
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: that I am not at that level. I'm working now,
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: come on, you'll get there, But um, you know what
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: you gotta do to get there, and you don't want
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: to do that. Probably not we told you? What? What
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: how you tell true outdoors? I don't think you told
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: me that. Yeah, we we distilled one single thing. Lay
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: it on me. I wasn't there. I don't want to
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: remind you. You can't talk about it, so honest, and
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: I know this secret. We told you. We told you.
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: I did hear about it. Told about trapping. No no, no, no, no,
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: no go on no. Okay, a seasoned shooter. You in
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: ten years okay, you in ten years? Would that would
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: be not a bad shot? Next year? Okay? So you're
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: going to practice? You take over whatever I'm saying. You
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: were agitated. I can tell you I've been in that
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: position before, buddies. He's scream, whisper in your ear shott.
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: It is not cool. But but on the flip side,
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: I actually feel very grateful that he was doing that
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: because a shot on your own, I'm not sure like
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: I shot it standing there, but I I appreciated the guidance,
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: you know what I mean, Like it was it was
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: an intense guidance. Don't get me wrong. It was not
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: like Tracy shoot the birds time. It was shoot shoot
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: the bird, you know. And I was like, Okay, it's
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: a real problem of mine. It's a real problem of mine. Um.
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: I feel that that when I'm mentoring new hunters, I
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: typically let them down at at at at the moment
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: of truth. I don't feel like I was let down.
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: I think I'm running out of different uh I am.
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: I'm not sympathetic to the pacing that they that they
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: feel as comfortable. Well, I want to force them to
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: a more quicker pacing, right yeah. But I mean for
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: me personally, like I actually think it was helpful because
- 1:24:56Speaker 1: I like to be pushed a little bit, Like I
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: I like that challenge. So I didn't mind that it
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: was more a matter of because he came out from
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: the right so unexpectedly, and I think you had us
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: on him slightly before I even did. And then I
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: was like, oh my god, there he is, Oh God.
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: And then you're like, shoot the bird. And then I
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: was like, this is time that I felt like I
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: couldn't really like get my good shot. Obviously I didn't
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: get as good of a shot as I would have wanted.
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: Walked through the shooting, but you have to use the
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: word blouch instead of bang. Okay, I feel like some
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: of it is like very foggy because it was all
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: It's all happened so damn fast too. So okay, So
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: I'm set up, I'm hunched down, I'm ready to go,
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: and I see this bird come like shockingly out of
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: my right hand side, and then you're like, shoot, shoot
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: the bird. And I was like, hey, so I I
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: pulled the trigger, blouch, and I'm like, oh yeah. The
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: bird flies up in the air. The wings are kind
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: of like and I was like, and I at that
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: moment was like, Johann has told me that when you
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: sometimes when you kill a turkey, that they can like
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: flounder flap for a little bit before they die. Is
- 1:26:18Speaker 1: that what's happening, Steve, I don't know at that point,
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: I didn't know. Okay, take it to farming for a minute. Okay,
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: in the old days and still today, in some cases,
- 1:26:34Speaker 1: people will dispatch the chicken, say by beheading it. Ye,
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: and what do those chickens do? Did they just fall over?
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: Never even twitch? No, they kind of like doing they
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: run around the barnyard. Oh yeah, Okay. So when you
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: get a direct hit on a turkey, it doesn't like
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: the best direct hit on the turkey oftentimes doesn't immediately
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: register to one as a lethal hit because there is
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: a lot of activity that happens. Our action his head
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: is his head has been like effectively removed right by
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: a direct shot from a shotgun. But there's a lot
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: of movement. So that's what I was thinking was potentially transpiring.
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: For a split I think you said something. You were like, yes,
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: you got him or something like that, and I was like, oh, really,
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: Like I was a little taken aback by shot, and
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: then literally you were like shoot again. Yeah. It's funny
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: how fast they can go from flopping too having their
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: legs underneath them. You have their legs underneath them, and
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: that's what Steve said he was like, I saw that
- 1:27:48Speaker 1: he was getting his legs underneath him, and it wasn't
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: a lethal shot. And at that point, I think my
- 1:27:53Speaker 1: mind was so flustered that I was like, oh goodness, gracious,
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: Like I was a little bit a wreck kind of that.
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: I don't think I could focus enough to like regroup
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: and like shoot effectively. Again, I think that was the
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: issue because I was stressed and I was panicked, and
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: I was like, I've hit him, but I haven't lethally
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: hit him, And now we have an issue. And we
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: had two more shells in the old clip, that's correct,
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: the old tube. Neither one of them touched a bird.
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: I shot them, but they did not touch the bird.
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: And I was like, this is a disaster. Then it
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: started to like sink in and I was like, this
- 1:28:36Speaker 1: is exactly what I was most fearful would happen. That
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: I would injure a bird and not lethally shoot him,
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: and then I would cause pain and suffering into an animal.
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: And that was exactly what happened. So but like you
- 1:28:51Speaker 1: don't really have a chance to like process at all,
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: because you're like, we gotta go, we gotta go find him.
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: You know what I mean, Like you're like, we gotta go,
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: we gotta go to find the bird. So it's like
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: you're trying to process all of what just transpired, but
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: like no time because you're off running across the field
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: looking for tracks, trying to locate him, trying to find him,
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: trying to find where he went. Like while that all
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: is happening, like you still have a lot of adrenaline
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: going but I couldn't help but like in my mind,
- 1:29:19Speaker 1: think about what that poor bird was going through, which
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: probably isn't necessarily realistic, but that was exactly where my
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: head went. It was like he's in pain, he's suffering, Like,
- 1:29:30Speaker 1: you know, he didn't expect this. This isn't fair, Like
- 1:29:33Speaker 1: I was going through all of those types of emotions,
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: couple with the fact that I was like, goddamn it,
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: why did I suck so bad? Like I was annoyed
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: that I felt like I had not capitalized successfully and
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: like impressively on the moment. Let's say we had had
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: your first hunt. We had decided was going to be
- 1:29:55Speaker 1: a uh deer hunt mm hmmm, rifle deer hunt m hm,
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: and we knew that in the best case, like how
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: it typically goes best case scenario, we would instruct you
- 1:30:06Speaker 1: to when we get a chance at a deer, we're
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: gonna shoot behind the front shoulder so that we punch
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: a hole through its lungs. We don't waste to either
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: shoulder meat. Okay, And we knew that what would happen
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: would be you hit the deer, the deer is gonna
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: run off ten yards a hundred yards and runoff, bleed out,
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: pile up and die. And we knew going to new
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: that's what it was gonna look like. How would you
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: feel that happened? Because effectively, you shoot a turkey, it
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: has some moment a panic, runs off, dies, there's a
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: little bit of time expires, but runs off, gets in
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: the brush, dies, and sometimes some whatever minutes elapsed. Um,
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: But it wasn't what we thought what happen because we
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: thought the typically shoot turkey just dies. If I like,
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: how much of it was disappointment that it didn't go
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: as we planned, and how much of it was the
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: whore of it having this brief moment of confusion and pain.
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: So I think it's the second That second point was
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: probably what I was struggling with the most. But then
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: after I kind of processed those emotions. I was like, oh,
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: the disappointment of not having it go exactly as I
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: had hoped or as you guys would have wanted it
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: to go. That that was secondary. So we had shot
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: a deer and I was like, perfect shot, but the
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: deer ran off and we see it like going, it
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: crosses the creek and goes and runs over a hill,
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: and You're like, oh my god, I'm nervous, and I'm like, no, no,
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: it's perfect shot, and we gold narrat is dead. Would
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: you have been really upset about the distance? The time
- 1:31:43Speaker 1: and distance that elapsed not upsetting to you know, I
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: think it would have been upsetting to me. However, Like,
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: given the fact that we were in I was in
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: a situation with you kind of guiding me and providing
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: your expertise and your experience and perspective. If you had
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: counseled me in that situation to say this is quite common,
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: I guarantee you that you know we'll find him, you know,
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: very close, or would have you that would that would
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: ease my concern? Well, I was shocked that we found it.
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: That's why I think I could eat that from you.
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: And I was like, this is a tricky like we
- 1:32:22Speaker 1: now have it a very tricky situation. You guys got
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: lucky people. When bird gets out of sight of you,
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: they don't leave a blood trail. I it was a
- 1:32:33Speaker 1: range of emotions because we got the first thing we
- 1:32:35Speaker 1: did went and checked the river bank and couldn't find
- 1:32:39Speaker 1: running turkey tracks crossing it, and Seth had had enough experience.
- 1:32:44Speaker 1: Even though Seth behind the scenes said that enough experience
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: where he's like when they hit the stick stuff, they yeah,
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: it seems like that were like most birds, you know,
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: when water fell hung like, their defense is to fly away.
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: So when they can't do that, they just find a
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: spot of talking and they just sit very still. And
- 1:33:07Speaker 1: I've seen turkeys do that before. So no, I feel
- 1:33:11Speaker 1: very grateful that we were able to recover him. Honestly,
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: it took a while to process at all emotionally. But
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: had that not been a final outcome, I feel like
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: I would have felt very differently about my whole experience.
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: Have you eaten a needed turkey yet? I have? What
- 1:33:27Speaker 1: did you do with it? I made turky schnitzel, just
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: like you told me to. It was a huge success,
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: and I'm going to make some more turkey schnitzel this
- 1:33:34Speaker 1: weekend because Jeremiah's dad and brother are in town, and
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: so I figured it would be fun to cook up
- 1:33:41Speaker 1: some turkey your future father in law, future brother in law. Yeah,
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: and walking to you how you made your schnitzel? I
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: followed your recipe? Okay, oh absolutely, I'm not just like
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: singing my turkey schnitzel. I followed the expertise recipe by
- 1:33:57Speaker 1: the book. Did you put saran rap that? When he
- 1:34:00Speaker 1: hammered it out? It was awesome? The lemon makes all
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: the difference in the world. Lemon is is is critical?
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: Um here in this How do you feel about this, Maggie?
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: That that um that you haven't had any I just
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: want to go back out there and get one, did
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: you guys? You guys notice, but um you should probably
- 1:34:22Speaker 1: Tracy pass a little bit of turkey. Did Steve give
- 1:34:28Speaker 1: me a little more crest than that? She did? She
- 1:34:31Speaker 1: shared with me. So I'm very grateful for appreciative after
- 1:34:36Speaker 1: our after our hunting, and our surprise about the turkey,
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: not just pile them up dead? Um, I thought for
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: a couple of minutes later's a zero percent chance Tracy
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: will be doing this again. And then an hour later
- 1:34:48Speaker 1: I put it to you and you were already at
- 1:34:50Speaker 1: ninety yeah, and I would tell you I'm at a
- 1:34:52Speaker 1: hundred now, like even with further distance from it and
- 1:34:56Speaker 1: the reflection of it, and just the um kind of
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: respective that I have on the whole experience and how
- 1:35:03Speaker 1: magnificent it was, and also just the connection to the
- 1:35:06Speaker 1: outdoors and spending that time kind of connected to nature.
- 1:35:10Speaker 1: Like even probably if I hadn't got a bird, I
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: would probably tell you now I'd be a percent likely
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: to do it again that I want to do it again.
- 1:35:17Speaker 1: And partly there's this mentality of like I want to
- 1:35:19Speaker 1: do it again better, like I want to improve upon
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: my previous experience. I want to get more comfortable, I
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: want to be more accurate and effective, like I want
- 1:35:27Speaker 1: to get better at it. Where are you at, Maggie?
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: And it's funny that it's weird to see this in you.
- 1:35:35Speaker 1: Where not that it contradicts something I thought about you,
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: but it's weird to seeing you. There's sort of like
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: a um like a friendly sort of vendetta kind of
- 1:35:45Speaker 1: thing going up. I mean, like because you're competitive, you
- 1:35:49Speaker 1: obviously competitive, and so you I can see that you
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: don't like, like you don't like the feeling of having
- 1:35:56Speaker 1: not been successful, but not in a powerty way, but
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: in a way where you're this isn't over. I'll figure
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: this out. Yeah, definitely. And I mean I think that's
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: what draws me to running and individual sports and then
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: get go and I'd say, huneting, it's definitely falls. I mean,
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: it's not sport necessarily. I mean there's more to it
- 1:36:15Speaker 1: than that, but you do it and like you're going
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: out there for a purpose. There's a thing you want
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: to happen, and you're gonna and you're wanting to make
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: that thing happen. Yeah. And I think that's why I
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: was a decent athlete in college is that I didn't
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: get down if I didn't perform well in a race.
- 1:36:28Speaker 1: It was not like that's like the end all be all.
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: You know, there's a room to improve and reflect on
- 1:36:34Speaker 1: that and get better. And I don't know, I came
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: away with just so much appreciation that just and fun,
- 1:36:40Speaker 1: Like I had so much fun it makes me just
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: want to go do it again. Maggie went to Josh
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: Pristine when we got home and order yourself up a
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: O eight. I didn't that synthet just got worried. I'm
- 1:36:54Speaker 1: getting it. Yeah, so the drive is there? Seriously, is
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: this gonna be the first firearm in your household the
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: first time? My mom's probably hearing about it right now.
- 1:37:12Speaker 1: American gun owner. Yeah, I think I think to our
- 1:37:15Speaker 1: experience just from like chasing that one bird and having
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: it be so intimate. Like we tried other places. I
- 1:37:21Speaker 1: was always like, yeah, let's go here, Sure, be honest,
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: whatever you think, but that intimate moment was just I
- 1:37:29Speaker 1: don't know. That's addicting. You gonna up, You're gonna ring
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: up safe place in your house to keep it. You
- 1:37:35Speaker 1: gotta you guysn't have kids run around them. M hm,
- 1:37:39Speaker 1: I need your help. Yeah, tell me what to do.
- 1:37:42Speaker 1: Um of grown ups. I mean it's different, but no kids,
- 1:37:48Speaker 1: that's exciting. Yeah, what are you gonna hind deer this year?
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: If you guys will help teach me? Sure? Okay? Any
- 1:37:59Speaker 1: final thought? Mm hmmm, I don't know. No speaking, he's
- 1:38:05Speaker 1: still out there. I mean Turkey still live. Checked another
- 1:38:10Speaker 1: day he were he oh man, did you make a
- 1:38:13Speaker 1: fool of me that day? Um? But set's going this weekend.
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: I think he's gonna we're gonna go. I'm gonna I'm
- 1:38:19Speaker 1: gonna check on him. He should see if you're still around.
- 1:38:23Speaker 1: I'm out of days. Man, he's too he's a little
- 1:38:25Speaker 1: too far away. If he was like ten to thirty
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: minutes away, i'd probably work something out. But he's two
- 1:38:31Speaker 1: hours away. So yeah, you're going camping for the whole
- 1:38:34Speaker 1: weekend up there. Yeah, so you can put some time in. Yeah,
- 1:38:37Speaker 1: it's just beautiful too. Oh, it's gonna be a good
- 1:38:40Speaker 1: Turkey weekend in Montana. Man. Yeah, yeah, Tracy. Got any
- 1:38:45Speaker 1: final thoughts too, Final thoughts that I want to share.
- 1:38:48Speaker 1: One is, you know, I feel like a lot of
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: people talk about the importance of like having a mentor
- 1:38:53Speaker 1: as you get into hunting, and I never really understood.
- 1:38:56Speaker 1: I mean, of course, you always want to have somebody
- 1:38:58Speaker 1: that can help teach you or you kind of show
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: you the ropes. I never really understood the real value
- 1:39:04Speaker 1: of being able to try something new with people who
- 1:39:09Speaker 1: are so experienced and so um so much of an
- 1:39:13Speaker 1: expert in kind of the the area. Um and I
- 1:39:17Speaker 1: feel like I would have never been able to kind
- 1:39:19Speaker 1: of embrace this new adventure without that. So really grateful,
- 1:39:22Speaker 1: honestly for you guys taking the time to kind of
- 1:39:26Speaker 1: introduce us, because the knowledge that was imparted, the experience
- 1:39:32Speaker 1: that was imparted, the level of security that I felt
- 1:39:36Speaker 1: knowing that I had somebody next to me who is
- 1:39:40Speaker 1: an expert who could help guide and navigate any situation
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: that would potentially arise was monumental. And I would say
- 1:39:49Speaker 1: to anybody who's looking to kind of try something new,
- 1:39:52Speaker 1: especially in the world of hunting, finding that is so valuable,
- 1:39:57Speaker 1: like that is that was a critical part of UM
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: me being able to experience this and wanting to experience
- 1:40:04Speaker 1: it again. And then two, I would just say it
- 1:40:06Speaker 1: was really grateful to be surrounded by people who are
- 1:40:09Speaker 1: just badass people that really like to just also have fun.
- 1:40:13Speaker 1: So like, while things were really tough, had there not
- 1:40:16Speaker 1: been the laughter that there was, I would have been
- 1:40:19Speaker 1: a whole different ball game. And so being able to
- 1:40:21Speaker 1: infuse a little bit of that fun and that laughter, like,
- 1:40:24Speaker 1: I felt like I had a really awesome group around
- 1:40:26Speaker 1: me supporting me even in my worst moments, because you
- 1:40:30Speaker 1: guys saw a lot of ship that you probably would
- 1:40:33Speaker 1: never you know have seen. UM that was really grateful
- 1:40:36Speaker 1: for that. Thank you, Thank you. Take you back on
- 1:40:39Speaker 1: that too. I mean, how many times you try something
- 1:40:41Speaker 1: new and it's like an expert trying to show you
- 1:40:43Speaker 1: totally not willing to come down near your level, or
- 1:40:46Speaker 1: like they make you feel dumb in that situation and
- 1:40:49Speaker 1: you don't know what they're talking about. I mean, this
- 1:40:51Speaker 1: was like eye opening, and I don't know, very appreciative
- 1:40:55Speaker 1: and grateful for the experience and knowledge that's like bestowed
- 1:40:58Speaker 1: at me. I mean, that's not laws on me. I
- 1:41:01Speaker 1: still think about turkeys when I'm going to bed at night.
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: What what's fun? What what's fun about? Uh? Going out
- 1:41:08Speaker 1: with you guys and showing you some things there is
- 1:41:10Speaker 1: that you're open about, kind of open about what you
- 1:41:15Speaker 1: know and don't know. And it's nice to see things
- 1:41:18Speaker 1: through new eyes, you know, and for people to be
- 1:41:21Speaker 1: like have the sort of self confidence and willingness to
- 1:41:24Speaker 1: kind of like fess up about what they aren't aware
- 1:41:27Speaker 1: of or what they haven't seen before, because it helps
- 1:41:30Speaker 1: you sort of guide someone and understand what they're going through.
- 1:41:34Speaker 1: And I think there's a lot of times there's a
- 1:41:35Speaker 1: way that some people get in new situation, they feel
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: like they kind of want to bluff m their way along,
- 1:41:41Speaker 1: and that bluffing along can actually be a real impediment
- 1:41:45Speaker 1: to a kind of meaningful progress because they're sort of
- 1:41:47Speaker 1: a posturing someone might have like, oh this is nothing
- 1:41:51Speaker 1: new to me, and oh yeah, and it just it
- 1:41:54Speaker 1: gets awkward and weird. But to have to to be
- 1:41:56Speaker 1: with people who have that self confidence to kind of
- 1:41:58Speaker 1: like to express marvel or express interest and what you
- 1:42:04Speaker 1: don't know and do know, what you're comfortable with and
- 1:42:06Speaker 1: not comfortable with, makes the whole thing pleageable and easy.
- 1:42:08Speaker 1: And there's never there's no um weirdness or tension that
- 1:42:12Speaker 1: arises yet from someone who like from someone being a bullshitter, right, totally,
- 1:42:19Speaker 1: totally yes, Yeah, hoping a year from now, you guys
- 1:42:24Speaker 1: just roll in about eleven one morning. You guys are like, dude,
- 1:42:30Speaker 1: there he was have like some real good, you know,
- 1:42:33Speaker 1: hunting stories that you guys weren't with Steve or myself.
- 1:42:37Speaker 1: Drag and a couple of rope greggors behind you. We're
- 1:42:40Speaker 1: coming in and yeah with dead turkeys come checking out,
- 1:42:44Speaker 1: um behind my desk. Yeah, I hope to see that. No.
- 1:42:49Speaker 1: I was gonna say, Tracy, you should really play up
- 1:42:51Speaker 1: the like the provider role when you are serving this
- 1:42:56Speaker 1: Turkey this weekend to your to your soon to be
- 1:42:59Speaker 1: in law us, because this is great. I just like,
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: I just I want to like imagine that you're in
- 1:43:04Speaker 1: there and your father in law and your brother in
- 1:43:06Speaker 1: law and you're like, yeah, well you know, someone around
- 1:43:09Speaker 1: here's got to bring home to me. Serve it up, guys,
- 1:43:15Speaker 1: guys do that? Well, well, little lady, what do we
- 1:43:18Speaker 1: have here? Like just something nice shot? It's a little
- 1:43:23Speaker 1: something nice shot out in the woods. Yeah. I think
- 1:43:26Speaker 1: they're all just a bit shocked. You're like, oh, it
- 1:43:30Speaker 1: didn't expect this out of you knew you were moving
- 1:43:32Speaker 1: to Mount Canada. I got a lot of hats and
- 1:43:34Speaker 1: a lot of gusts bloods for Christmas year, but we
- 1:43:36Speaker 1: did not expect this. I just keep getting shocked from
- 1:43:40Speaker 1: everyone too. So I leveled off Old Betsy really Nellie
- 1:43:46Speaker 1: Bells bells, and old Nellie bell barks. Alright, so next
- 1:43:55Speaker 1: time we'll talk with you, guys, we'll talk after we
- 1:43:57Speaker 1: do hunt this fall. Come down, let's do it. Okay,
- 1:44:01Speaker 1: I'm game. I gotta get some practicing in the meantime
- 1:44:04Speaker 1: so that you got any final things would be good.
- 1:44:07Speaker 1: Go ahead. I was just one of the most memorable.
- 1:44:09Speaker 1: I think meat eater shoots that I've been on just
- 1:44:11Speaker 1: because of laughing and like the just seeing like two
- 1:44:15Speaker 1: people have never done this thing before. Um, we're a
- 1:44:18Speaker 1: lot of fun. We laughed a lot. It was a
- 1:44:21Speaker 1: good time. We need to frame that, Ninja Ninjammer. Oh
- 1:44:26Speaker 1: I fo you weren't a true outdoors and that's right,
- 1:44:28Speaker 1: the beaver trapping thing come dark. That one night you
- 1:44:32Speaker 1: wanted to go to bed. I was like you because
- 1:44:37Speaker 1: YA was gonna like you canna go outside a little
- 1:44:39Speaker 1: steel and you wanted to go to bed. I was down,
- 1:44:42Speaker 1: but you advised me would not be a good idea.
- 1:44:46Speaker 1: All right, thank you. Everyone stops offstros Past Control feat
