- 0:04Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Craig Way Show and the Voice
- 0:07Speaker 1: of the Longhorns.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Craig Way.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Follow Craig on social media at Horn Voice.
- 0:18Speaker 3: Eighteen minutes after three o'clock here on a Wednesday, Thursday.
- 0:24Speaker 3: On Wednesday, it's Thursday afternoon. Here on sports Radio AM
- 0:28Speaker 3: thirteen hundred ZO, We're going to hear from Texas men's
- 0:32Speaker 3: basketball coach, trying to hear in a few minutes. The
- 0:35Speaker 3: long Horn football team was doing very little for the
- 0:38Speaker 3: front part of this week. Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkisian
- 0:42Speaker 3: wanted to give them some time away, both physically and mentally.
- 0:47Speaker 3: And we'll hear more from sark coming up in the
- 0:48Speaker 3: next segment. But of course, the players who involved in
- 0:53Speaker 3: the college Football awards presentations, they've been a little bit busy.
- 0:57Speaker 3: For example, Jake Major who was a Campbell Trophy finals
- 1:03Speaker 3: he didn't win it. Jalen Milroe actually won it. It's
- 1:07Speaker 3: for the player best student athlete with academic, community service
- 1:12Speaker 3: and excellence on the field, I think, and Jalen Milroe
- 1:16Speaker 3: actually won it. But Jake Majors was a finalist for it,
- 1:19Speaker 3: and so afterwards he was asked about how his team's doing.
- 1:24Speaker 3: What's the mental state like of the team coming off
- 1:27Speaker 3: the loss to Georgia in the SEC Championship. Remember there's
- 1:31Speaker 3: been no player interview, press conference, media availabilities of any
- 1:36Speaker 3: kind as a team for Texas, but as the individual
- 1:39Speaker 3: players kind of fan out. Calvin Banks was asking things
- 1:42Speaker 3: last night when he won the Lombardi Award, and Jake
- 1:46Speaker 3: Majors was asked about the current mental and physical state
- 1:49Speaker 3: of this football team heading in the next week's playoff.
- 1:52Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, we're going to take some time to
- 1:53Speaker 4: get our bodies back, but you know we're gonna get
- 1:56Speaker 4: back to it. We're going to start preparing, to start installing,
- 1:59Speaker 4: you know, doing our routine that we always have every
- 2:02Speaker 4: week when it comes to the season, and you know,
- 2:05Speaker 4: as a team, we just gotta, you know, go out
- 2:07Speaker 4: there and play like we're.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Trying to keep our family together.
- 2:09Speaker 4: Because hell, what's so special about this team as we're
- 2:12Speaker 4: all bought into the culture and it feels like a brotherhood,
- 2:15Speaker 4: like a true brotherhood, Like everybody loves each other and
- 2:18Speaker 4: we got to fight for our brotherhood.
- 2:19Speaker 2: So it's gonna be a fun time.
- 2:22Speaker 3: Yeah, looking forward to it, getting looking forward to getting
- 2:27Speaker 3: back together and working together. That's one thing that Sark
- 2:29Speaker 3: has talked about quite a bit. It's about how this
- 2:31Speaker 3: group has been really good at doing that. All right,
- 2:35Speaker 3: on to basketball and Texas comes off the loss to
- 2:39Speaker 3: Yukon on Sunday. Texas had managed to when they were
- 2:46Speaker 3: down big in the game, came all the way back
- 2:51Speaker 3: and cut it to eight, had a chance to cut
- 2:53Speaker 3: at six, but couldn't hit a key shot down with it,
- 2:55Speaker 3: missed a couple of key shots, and then Yukon finished
- 2:58Speaker 3: it off to win. So now Texas at seven and two,
- 3:02Speaker 3: gets ready to go back to work and playing New
- 3:04Speaker 3: Mexico State tonight at Moody Center. Yesterday, Long WRNS head
- 3:08Speaker 3: coach Rodney Terry took part in the media zoom when
- 3:11Speaker 3: he visited with the local media talking about the current
- 3:14Speaker 3: state of his team getting ready for this matchup.
- 3:17Speaker 2: Good aff and our team.
- 3:18Speaker 5: I apologize if you were asked us before, but you
- 3:21Speaker 5: talked about that sense of urgency, you talked about it
- 3:23Speaker 5: Sunday night against Yukon. Just how much of that is
- 3:26Speaker 5: an eight within a player and how much of that
- 3:29Speaker 5: or within a player and a team, and how much
- 3:31Speaker 5: of that is something that you have to instill within
- 3:33Speaker 5: your team.
- 3:35Speaker 6: You know, Eric, I tried to from a coaching standpoint,
- 3:38Speaker 6: I think a lot of coaches do, not just myself,
- 3:40Speaker 6: but I think you try to prepare your team for
- 3:43Speaker 6: what they're about to embark on. You never want them
- 3:45Speaker 6: to go into a game where they were like, oh, man,
- 3:49Speaker 6: I didn't know this team was going to be ready
- 3:50Speaker 6: to play off. I didn't know that these guys were
- 3:53Speaker 6: going to play the way that they're playing right now.
- 3:55Speaker 6: You know you coming in you because won the last
- 3:58Speaker 6: two national championships a well coached They went over to Hawaii,
- 4:03Speaker 6: they didn't have.
- 4:03Speaker 2: Their best game.
- 4:04Speaker 6: They didn't play, uh, you know, to the best of
- 4:07Speaker 6: their ability over there on the road. Their next opportunity
- 4:11Speaker 6: to go on the road is to come to Austin,
- 4:12Speaker 6: Texas and play against US. Here, we knew, and I
- 4:16Speaker 6: told our guys we were gonna get their best game.
- 4:19Speaker 6: We were gonna get a team that was gonna be
- 4:21Speaker 6: extremely focused and challenged to come in and play at
- 4:24Speaker 6: a high level. And anytime you've got six guys that
- 4:28Speaker 6: they all have a national championship ring, and you know
- 4:32Speaker 6: three or four of those guys were significant players on
- 4:35Speaker 6: last year's team, there's a lot of there's a lot
- 4:38Speaker 6: of proven and want to to on the other side
- 4:41Speaker 6: over there, and I thought they came in and they
- 4:42Speaker 6: played extremely well.
- 4:44Speaker 2: I think again again, I'll take ownership on it myself.
- 4:49Speaker 6: With my defensive standpoint, they're one of the elite offensive
- 4:52Speaker 6: execution teams and all the college basketball. You know, we
- 4:56Speaker 6: we've had some success early in our journey this year
- 4:59Speaker 6: with this team to where we could switch and and.
- 5:02Speaker 2: Uh and do pretty good with that. Really hard to
- 5:05Speaker 2: do it against you gun.
- 5:06Speaker 6: We started the game switching, and they really started dicing
- 5:10Speaker 6: us up a little bit in terms of our.
- 5:11Speaker 2: Switches and UH, and so we had to change.
- 5:14Speaker 6: That up and make an adjustment during the game and say, hey,
- 5:16Speaker 6: you know what, we've got to play with the sense
- 5:18Speaker 6: of urgency in terms of how hard we play on defense.
- 5:21Speaker 6: Well going out me and we're not gonna switch, We're
- 5:23Speaker 6: gonna stay with our guys. And I thought that really
- 5:26Speaker 6: kind of change the game for us, UH on that.
- 5:28Speaker 2: End of the floor. Brian Davis, please, hey, coach UH.
- 5:35Speaker 2: Two questions of easy one.
- 5:37Speaker 7: First, how how did how's Kayden doing here in the
- 5:41Speaker 7: days after all that, I mean, playing all those minutes
- 5:44Speaker 7: and getting worried about his shoulder.
- 5:48Speaker 2: You know what. You know, he he had.
- 5:50Speaker 6: He had two great successful shoulder surgeries last year. He
- 5:55Speaker 6: had a great summer. He's had a lot of contact, uh.
- 5:59Speaker 2: Prior to that.
- 6:00Speaker 6: He played in some physical games this year as well.
- 6:03Speaker 2: He did take a hard fall to the floor.
- 6:06Speaker 6: In the contest the other day, bounce back up, played
- 6:09Speaker 6: through it. You know, it was more of like a
- 6:14Speaker 6: bruised type of situation for me. Wasn't anything structural.
- 6:18Speaker 2: Uh.
- 6:18Speaker 6: So you know he's come back the last two days
- 6:20Speaker 6: here in each practice, well, first day was a lot
- 6:23Speaker 6: more sore, just to be expected. Today was better today
- 6:28Speaker 6: as well. So look for him to be bout. He's
- 6:31Speaker 6: been able to push through it to this point right now.
- 6:34Speaker 2: Cool, very very good.
- 6:36Speaker 7: The other question I had is just looking at the schedule,
- 6:38Speaker 7: looking at the games you have the rest of this month,
- 6:42Speaker 7: is is your mindset now got to use these games
- 6:47Speaker 7: to you know, really ramp up and get ready for
- 6:51Speaker 7: for A and M and SEC play.
- 6:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I think right now. I think again.
- 6:56Speaker 8: You know.
- 6:58Speaker 6: The thing that I said to our guys that day
- 7:00Speaker 6: after the ball game, you know, and even you know
- 7:04Speaker 6: leading up to practice yesterday, because we have to take
- 7:07Speaker 6: the falling day off after the game. You know, I
- 7:10Speaker 6: think we're at a point in our season right now
- 7:12Speaker 6: where we have to be fully committed to really work
- 7:15Speaker 6: at hard.
- 7:15Speaker 2: And fixing the things we needed to fix from.
- 7:18Speaker 6: An office standpoint, defensive standpoint, and then we needed to
- 7:22Speaker 6: have a really good.
- 7:24Speaker 2: Level of urgency that we're playing with.
- 7:27Speaker 6: When we cut, we have to have a purposeful cut
- 7:30Speaker 6: on how hard we do it well. Initiate offense, we
- 7:33Speaker 6: have to initiate offense with a great pace of play
- 7:36Speaker 6: in terms of how we want to play. We spread
- 7:39Speaker 6: back on defense, we have to have one hundred yard
- 7:41Speaker 6: dash mentality getting back. But being fully committed with a
- 7:45Speaker 6: high level of urgency and being consistent with what we do.
- 7:49Speaker 6: That's been the biggest thing that I've tried to preciate
- 7:51Speaker 6: between now in the time that we take a break
- 7:54Speaker 6: and we come back from my break, we have to
- 7:57Speaker 6: have that that that all that that has to be
- 8:00Speaker 6: a part of who we are. We're committed, we have urgency,
- 8:04Speaker 6: and we play with consistency.
- 8:07Speaker 2: Corey mose, please, what's up our team?
- 8:11Speaker 8: So just kind of picking back and off of Brian's
- 8:14Speaker 8: question last month of the season before SEC play starts,
- 8:19Speaker 8: but I just want to ask before SEC play starts,
- 8:22Speaker 8: what is something that you figured out about your team
- 8:25Speaker 8: to this point that you may not have known before
- 8:27Speaker 8: the first season.
- 8:28Speaker 2: How many first game of the season.
- 8:30Speaker 6: Well, yeah, I think you know, man, I pretty much
- 8:33Speaker 6: have given you a standard question that a lot of
- 8:35Speaker 6: people in college basketball have giving you. You know, anytime
- 8:38Speaker 6: you're trying to navigate through the landscapeable one year roster.
- 8:43Speaker 6: You know we got ten new players. You're just really
- 8:46Speaker 6: trying to get your guys to jail and understand your
- 8:48Speaker 6: schemes and develop an identity in November. Right now, it's
- 8:53Speaker 6: about us coaching the details and us trying to get
- 8:55Speaker 6: our guys better. We know we have to get better
- 8:58Speaker 6: offensively with our pace of play, our cuts, our ball movement.
- 9:02Speaker 6: So that's something we're really harping on right now at
- 9:05Speaker 6: a very high level. Get the ball moving, it doesn't
- 9:07Speaker 6: need to stick, and then each get side to side,
- 9:09Speaker 6: and we need to be able to plot.
- 9:10Speaker 2: We attack the paint.
- 9:12Speaker 6: You know, the other day was our lowest scoring output
- 9:16Speaker 6: in the paint.
- 9:17Speaker 2: We've been able to do a great.
- 9:18Speaker 6: Job against opponents to this point right now, really attacking
- 9:22Speaker 6: the paint. All we did a pretty good job of
- 9:25Speaker 6: trying to play inside out against yukon the other day
- 9:28Speaker 6: as well. We put eight fouls on those guys and
- 9:31Speaker 6: you know, put the big guys in foul trouble. But
- 9:34Speaker 6: I think the one thing that that I didn't know
- 9:37Speaker 6: at that that as we continue to go through our journey, uh,
- 9:41Speaker 6: is that you know, we still have to be able
- 9:44Speaker 6: to to work games. You know, we uh we we
- 9:48Speaker 6: we can't give up twenty minutes in terms of uh
- 9:51Speaker 6: this is a group that can't pick up things pretty quick.
- 9:54Speaker 2: But I think that maybe.
- 9:56Speaker 6: Old estimated our learning curve to this point right now, know,
- 10:00Speaker 6: with trying to play a switching defense against a really
- 10:03Speaker 6: good offensive team. So again I own that I'll take
- 10:06Speaker 6: that on a little bit. We've been pretty good though
- 10:08Speaker 6: in big moments, being able to switch and Gordon, you know,
- 10:12Speaker 6: switching Gordon different actions against against pretty.
- 10:15Speaker 2: Good offensive teams.
- 10:16Speaker 6: But when you play against an elite offensive executing team,
- 10:19Speaker 6: we had to kind of go back to our base
- 10:21Speaker 6: defense and not stay in it as long as we did.
- 10:26Speaker 9: Have time for three last ones in the huge and
- 10:27Speaker 9: then Brown.
- 10:28Speaker 10: Please, hey, coach, My question was just with sec play
- 10:32Speaker 10: looming and you mentioned how there was a lot of
- 10:34Speaker 10: you guys coming to the team, what was the biggest
- 10:36Speaker 10: thing that you saw that gives you your team confidence
- 10:39Speaker 10: as well as your yourself heading into ac play.
- 10:43Speaker 6: Well, I think our guys are still learning how to
- 10:45Speaker 6: play hard and and uh and again, I never asked
- 10:48Speaker 6: any any guy to go in or our team to
- 10:52Speaker 6: go in and play a perfect game. No one's gonna
- 10:55Speaker 6: play a perfect game, no one's gonna coach a perfect game,
- 10:58Speaker 6: not gonna have an officiated game is perfect. But I
- 11:01Speaker 6: do ask our guys to go in and play extremely hard,
- 11:04Speaker 6: uh every night and play with a high.
- 11:07Speaker 2: Sense of urgency.
- 11:08Speaker 6: And I really challenge our guys to endear themselves to
- 11:12Speaker 6: our to our to our fan base. How do you
- 11:15Speaker 6: endure yourself to our fan base and and long Hunt
- 11:18Speaker 6: Nation by being a team that's crappy, that plays hard
- 11:22Speaker 6: every possession, that that really cares about about the name
- 11:27Speaker 6: on the front of the jersey and not the name
- 11:28Speaker 6: on the back of the back of the jersey, and
- 11:31Speaker 6: then just playing for one another and having a joy
- 11:34Speaker 6: in doing that. And so you know, that's really kind
- 11:37Speaker 6: of what we really try to instill.
- 11:39Speaker 2: In our guys. Uh and uh.
- 11:42Speaker 6: I think that's what we try to hang our hat
- 11:44Speaker 6: on every night.
- 11:46Speaker 2: Terry Middleton.
- 11:48Speaker 9: But uh, so you talked about urgency, the cutting, the joy,
- 11:55Speaker 9: getting you know, to the ball. Is it fair maybe
- 11:58Speaker 9: accurate to say you're kind of describing Kendall Weaver. I
- 12:02Speaker 9: mean this is when you're saying all this, I'm like,
- 12:04Speaker 9: that's Kendall Weaver.
- 12:05Speaker 2: Is that their.
- 12:08Speaker 8: Yeah?
- 12:09Speaker 2: I mean, Jerry, you're you're right.
- 12:10Speaker 6: You know, Kendall does play with a high sense of
- 12:13Speaker 6: urgency when he's on the floor.
- 12:14Speaker 2: He plays with a chip on his shoulder.
- 12:17Speaker 4: Uh.
- 12:18Speaker 6: He's the guy that executes when when we call an
- 12:22Speaker 6: action or we're in and you know, whether it be
- 12:25Speaker 6: a transition offensive action that we're running, a half court
- 12:28Speaker 6: act action that we're running. He's a guy in a
- 12:31Speaker 6: driving offense that will make a great forty five cut
- 12:34Speaker 6: with a great purpose. He will try to finish at
- 12:38Speaker 6: the rim. He rebounds his position, he defends his position. So, yeah,
- 12:43Speaker 6: you have a whole team full of Kendo of Weavers.
- 12:45Speaker 6: You got a monster tea last one.
- 12:51Speaker 9: Georgie Reeves from TSCV, go.
- 12:53Speaker 11: Ahead, please all right, good afternoon, coach, Thank you for
- 12:56Speaker 11: taking your time out, and like I just want to
- 12:58Speaker 11: bounce off of what that last question was. You know,
- 13:00Speaker 11: New Mexico State they have been un a capitalized on
- 13:02Speaker 11: defensive laps, Like, how are you going to prepare your
- 13:05Speaker 11: team and just kind of get them, I guess get
- 13:07Speaker 11: a team of Candle or Kendle Weavers. And in Texas
- 13:11Speaker 11: men's basketball, well, I.
- 13:13Speaker 6: Think again, we we worked the whole month of trying
- 13:15Speaker 6: to establishment identity defensively, and I thought we we've got
- 13:18Speaker 6: it pretty well. I mean, we're we're pretty good defensive team.
- 13:21Speaker 6: We can sit down and we can guard. You know,
- 13:23Speaker 6: we've shown that we uh that in big moments in
- 13:27Speaker 6: several of our games early in the season, that we
- 13:29Speaker 6: can make switches, we can switch Kayden out and go
- 13:32Speaker 6: to go to guard and and and feel like at
- 13:35Speaker 6: times that our big wings could could man up uh
- 13:38Speaker 6: with the big guys inside as well. But but but again,
- 13:41Speaker 6: I think the message has been for us is just
- 13:43Speaker 6: to sit down, play with urgency, give it, you know,
- 13:47Speaker 6: give it your all. In terms of how hard you
- 13:49Speaker 6: can go defensively. When the shot goes up, we have
- 13:52Speaker 6: to have all five guys trying to have a physical
- 13:54Speaker 6: block out uh. And then I think if we're able
- 13:56Speaker 6: to do that, we're able to play our strengths. We
- 13:58Speaker 6: can get out and we can run. You know, New
- 14:01Speaker 6: Mexico State's a well coach team. They got older players,
- 14:04Speaker 6: they've got sized they're one of the best rebounding teams
- 14:08Speaker 6: in all of college basketball. So they're gonna challenge us
- 14:11Speaker 6: on the glass. And when they're shooting the ball really well,
- 14:14Speaker 6: like they did the other night they made fourteen threes,
- 14:17Speaker 6: They're an extremely dangerous team against anyone anywhere on any
- 14:22Speaker 6: given night. So whoever I hands forward with them, they're
- 14:24Speaker 6: an older team, They're not gonna be intimidated coming into
- 14:27Speaker 6: our building playing. They just went into the pit sixteen
- 14:30Speaker 6: thousand and be the good New Mexico team, So they'll
- 14:35Speaker 6: We've got a huge challenge with a well coached team
- 14:39Speaker 6: in the New Mexico State Aggage Company.
- 14:41Speaker 3: And that game is tonight at seven o'clock. You'll hear
- 14:43Speaker 3: it here on the Zone six thirty airtime seven o'clock tip.
- 14:47Speaker 3: Also on ninety eight point one FMK Vets at the
- 14:50Speaker 3: Arnold joined me for the call of that. We'll hear
- 14:51Speaker 3: more from Rodney Terry about his basketball team and getting
- 14:56Speaker 3: through what they're going through right now. In the non
- 14:58Speaker 3: conference portion, of the schedule that'll be coming up next hour.
- 15:00Speaker 2: Up next more from coach sark Long WRN
- 15:03Speaker 3: S head coach Steve Sarkishan when we continue on sports
- 15:06Speaker 3: Radio AM thirteen under the Zone in the iHeartRadio app
