- 0:01When we look back at the history of human civilization, we can
- 0:05see that many ideas have been attempted to try to develop a
- 0:08fair, balanced, and prosperous society.
- 0:12Thinkers, philosophers, political scientists, and
- 0:15economists have all weighed in with their dreams and
- 0:19considerations about how to perfect human life on Earth.
- 0:24We can also see, however, that none of these ideas has actually
- 0:28worked out in practice. We have changed forms of
- 0:32government. We have changed political
- 0:34systems. We have changed economic
- 0:37systems. We have changed the elements of
- 0:40our communal life. We have tried capitalism,
- 0:44socialism, communism as well as tribal community, democracy,
- 0:50republics, dictatorships and imperial controls.
- 0:55We have seen secular societies and religious societies.
- 1:00In each case we developed our ideas with the power of our
- 1:04mental consciousness, if not purely through habits and
- 1:08instinctive behaviour based in the vital nature.
- 1:12And we have thus far failed to find the solution that brings
- 1:16harmony, well-being and progress to humanity.
- 1:22When any one system gets too extreme, a countervailing force
- 1:26arises and we go through cycles of development which have been
- 1:31codified by those who make a special study of history and the
- 1:35patterns of governance that succeed one another.
- 1:38As one attempt dies off and gives rise to the next
- 1:43iteration, we see that the failing of each one is due to
- 1:48the limitations and weaknesses of our basic human nature.
- 1:52And this has given rise to the idea that we are doomed to
- 1:56failure as we have not succeeded through any of these external
- 2:00means to make a meaningful change in human nature itself.
- 2:06And yet the human aspiration for development of a more perfect
- 2:11society and life of our communal existence continues to persist
- 2:16and press for yet another attempt.
- 2:20People have tried various means to effectuate a change of human
- 2:24behaviour and the consciousness that creates it.
- 2:28Great religious figures have asked us to love one another, to
- 2:32respect others, to treat others as we wish to be treated.
- 2:37Some have posited that we need benign, educated rulers to set
- 2:42down laws and principles and enforce them.
- 2:45These attempts have, however, not succeeded in the magnitude
- 2:50or breadth of change required to bring about a better existence.
- 2:56We can appreciate the goodwill that underlies these attempts
- 3:00and not hold it against those who have been willing to try.
- 3:06What is missing in all of this is the understanding of the way
- 3:09consciousness develops and evolves.
- 3:12The physical, vital and mental consciousness prevalent in the
- 3:16world today is simply not capable of the changes needed.
- 3:22While we see progress and development over time, and we
- 3:26see various advancement and expansion of understanding has
- 3:30taken place, these are all limited by the boundaries of our
- 3:34current status of consciousness, representing a melding of the
- 3:39physical, vital and mental powers into an imperfect
- 3:42configuration. Srioro Bindo looks at this
- 3:47historical perspective in the light of the evolution of
- 3:51consciousness and determines that the development of
- 3:55consciousness is not finished, that in fact the mental
- 3:59consciousness is a transitional stage.
- 4:03It is through the change of consciousness that comes with
- 4:06the next stage that a new form of harmony based in oneness and
- 4:11understanding is destined to manifest, Sri Aurobindo observes
- 4:18quote. A contempt for others is out of
- 4:21place, especially since the Divine is in all.
- 4:25Evidently, the activities and aspirations of men are not
- 4:29trivial and worthless for all. Life is a growth of the soul out
- 4:34of the darkness towards the light.
- 4:36But our attitude is that humanity cannot grow out of its
- 4:40limitations by the ordinary means adopted by the human mind.
- 4:44Politics, social reform, philanthropy, etcetera.
- 4:49These can only be temporary or local palliatives.
- 4:53The only true escape is a change of consciousness, a change into
- 4:59a greater, wider and pure way of being, and a life and action
- 5:04based upon that change. It is therefore to that that the
- 5:09energies must be turned once the spiritual orientation is
- 5:14complete. This implies no contempt, but
- 5:18the preference of the only effective means over those which
- 5:22have been found ineffective. End Quote reference Srioro Bindu
