- Lucas: We’ve spent a lot of time in the previous episodes walking through the halls of Topkapı Palace or standing in the shadow of the Hagia Sophia, but if you want to understand the Istanbul that survived the fall of the Empire, you have to look away from the Sultanate. Luna: You mean across the water? Lucas: Exactly. We’re talking about Beyoğlu, which was historically called Pera. While the old city centered on imperial power and Islamic law, this hillside district became something entirely different—a place where European merchants, diplomats, and artists lived under their own legal protections. Lucas: It started with the Genoese building the Galata Tower in the fourteenth century, but it really exploded after the Capitulations expanded in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, granting foreigners extraterritorial rights. Luna: So they were basically living by French or British law while sitting in Turkey. Lucas: Precisely. By the mid-nineteenth century, the streets of Pera looked less like an Ottoman city and more like a provincial Paris. You had gas lamps, wide boulevards, and opera houses, all built by Armenian and Greek architects who were trained in Vienna and Rome. Lucas: One of the most important figures here is Krikor Balyan, whose family designed many of the early Neoclassical buildings in this district, blending Western aesthetics with local needs. Luna: Did the local Ottoman population actually go over there? Lucas: They did, especially the wealthy and the cosmopolitan elite. It became a hub for coffeehouses, theaters, and newspapers that pushed for modernization, often challenging the conservative grip of the Sublime Porte in Sultanahmet. Lucas: The Pera Palace Hotel, opened in 1892, became the epicenter of this world, hosting everyone from T.E. Lawrence to Mata Hari, and eventually serving as a refuge for Mustafa Kemal Atatürk during the War of Independence. Luna: That sounds like a total cultural clash. Lucas: It was, but it wasn’t always hostile. It was a symbiotic tension. The Ottomans needed the trade and the diplomatic leverage that these foreigners provided, while the foreigners needed the stability and markets of the Empire. Lucas: However, this dual-city structure created deep resentments. As the empire weakened and nationalism rose in Europe, the Pera district started to feel less like a bridge and more like a colony. Luna: How did the end of the Empire affect that dynamic? Lucas: When the Republic was founded, the new government wanted a unified national identity, not a patchwork of legal enclaves. The Capitulations were abolished in 1924, stripping the foreigners of their special privileges. Lucas: This led to a massive exodus. Many of the Greek, Armenian, and Jewish families who had built the commercial life of Pera left, taking their capital and expertise with them. Luna: Did the architecture stay behind? Lucas: Much of it did, which is why walking down İstiklal Avenue today feels like stepping into a museum of European styles. You see baroque facades, art nouveau entrances, and brutalist republic-era blocks all jumbled together. Lucas: The Çiçek Pasajı, or Flower Passage, is one of the few remaining remnants of that old café culture, still serving wine and meze in a space that hasn’t changed much since the late nineteenth century. Luna: It’s weird to think of Istanbul having such distinct European zones. Lucas: It’s the defining feature of the modern city. If you stand on the Galata Tower today, you can see the clear line between the domes and minarets of the historic peninsula and the flat roofs and towers of the north. Lucas: But beyond the visual difference, there’s a psychological one. Beyoğlu remained a place of liberal dissent and artistic freedom, even when the rest of the country was tightening its screws. Luna: Is that why it’s still the center of nightlife and protests? Lucas: Without a doubt. The spirit of the independent press and the secular intellectual tradition that flourished in Pera carried directly into the Republican era, making this district the heart of Turkish political opposition. Lucas: Even today, the Taksim Square area is where people gather to demonstrate, echoing the public squares of Vienna and Paris that inspired the original planners of the district. Luna: So the foreign influence never really left. Lucas: It transformed. It’s no longer about legal exemptions, but about a cosmopolitan ethos that refuses to let Istanbul become just another conservative capital. Lucas: If you listen closely to the street musicians in the alleys off İstiklal, or read the graffiti on the walls, you’re hearing the same conversation that started with those Genoese traders seven hundred years ago. Luna: It’s a city that keeps reinventing itself while staying exactly where it is. Lucas: And that’s the real story of Turkey—not just the rise and fall of sultans, but the everyday struggle of a city trying to hold two worlds together without breaking apart. Lucas: If you’ve been stepping into history with us episode by episode, the way these conversations stay ad-free is listener support — buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Luna: It helps keep the archives open for deeper dives like this one. Lucas: Thanks for helping us preserve these stories. Next week, we’re going to look at the agricultural reforms that tried to modernize the countryside during the same period.
