- 0:40SPEAKER_06: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talk and Tech Podcast, powered by Guns Up Nation, part of the Guns Up Nation Podcast Network.
- 0:46SPEAKER_06: I'm your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host, Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:49SPEAKER_06: Tristan, it's here.
- 0:51SPEAKER_06: It's game week, baby.
- 0:53SPEAKER_08: A long time coming, sir.
- 0:56SPEAKER_08: We are here we are at the dawn of a new era in Texas Tech football, man.
- 1:02SPEAKER_08: It feels so good.
- 1:03SPEAKER_08: It feels good to be excited about football season again, man.
- 1:05SPEAKER_08: I I know, I know you could probably go back and quote tweet us on last season saying, you know what?
- 1:12SPEAKER_08: Matt Wells is going to turn around this season.
- 1:14SPEAKER_08: But he did not.
- 1:15SPEAKER_08: He did not.
- 1:16SPEAKER_08: But here we are.
- 1:17SPEAKER_08: Here we are at the doorstep of an entirely new season with an entirely new staff.
- 1:21SPEAKER_08: So man, I'm really excited.
- 1:22SPEAKER_08: It's we can actually sit here and expect something different, uh, for better or worse.
- 1:26SPEAKER_08: And that's amazing, man.
- 1:27SPEAKER_08: And obviously it's on the better side, if you ask either of us.
- 1:30SPEAKER_06: Yeah, no, absolutely.
- 1:31SPEAKER_06: I would agree 100% that this is a much more exciting season.
- 1:36SPEAKER_06: Uh this is I I said this on our our football preview, but uh, I this is just the most excited I've been for a football season in a long, long time.
- 1:44SPEAKER_06: He said ever.
- 1:45SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 1:47SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 1:48SPEAKER_06: I mean it truly, it truly is because even going into school, you know, freshman year is when I became a tech fan, really, and maybe the year prior.
- 1:58SPEAKER_06: But yeah, you know, I didn't really know what to expect when I came into school.
- 2:02SPEAKER_06: Now I I've been watching this team and I've been through a lot of disappointment.
- 2:05SPEAKER_06: And I, you know, this is the first coach that has really fired me up, you know, since Cliff, since uh and and Matt Wells.
- 2:14SPEAKER_06: So I'm I'm excited, bro.
- 2:15SPEAKER_06: Uh, I think this is gonna be a good season.
- 2:19SPEAKER_06: Uh, I think there's we've we've talked about it on the preview episode that this is uh there's a lot of uh there's a lot of unknowns with this team, but we are confident in the staff, and that's something we could not say really about uh the last unit.
- 2:36SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I mean, every time we were we sit here and talk about like the coordinators and then their supporting staff, we get pretty dang fired up.
- 2:42SPEAKER_08: We get like really excited about talking about each dude, and we never we never had that with Matt Wells.
- 2:47SPEAKER_08: I mean, you can go back and listen to any of our episodes, and that's something you can actually quote us on is never being fired up about anybody on the staff.
- 2:53SPEAKER_08: I I can't think of anyone we were excited about on the staff.
- 2:56SPEAKER_08: I mean, yeah, we we're kind of excited about the idea of David Yost because we were told to be excited about it, but with with like uh with with Kitley and Ruder now, we actually know that there's sustenance there to be really excited about, and there's some true potential, and that's being recognized across the nation with the with the staff.
- 3:14SPEAKER_08: So I'm totally with you, man.
- 3:16SPEAKER_08: And it's just here we are getting on Twitter every time, and and and the athletic department is injecting excitement into our veins about the football season, and not even just the football season, even the basketball season uh uh department is throwing out some fire content, and I already it's just like dang it.
- 3:31SPEAKER_08: It's I'm already ready for basketball season as well.
- 3:33SPEAKER_08: And dude, you were talking about like how is even since your freshman year, this is the most fired up you've been.
- 3:38SPEAKER_08: You know what's kind of weird to say?
- 3:41SPEAKER_08: Well, you know, in you know, in two years, we'll be at the decade mark of us being freshmen in college.
- 3:47SPEAKER_08: Oh, wow, okay.
- 3:48SPEAKER_06: Isn't that freaking weird, man?
- 3:50SPEAKER_06: That's weird, right?
- 3:51SPEAKER_06: That aged me a little bit.
- 3:52SPEAKER_06: Uh I know I know some of y'all listening are like, oh, what are you talking about?
- 3:56SPEAKER_06: Oh, weird, I've been talking about.
- 4:02SPEAKER_06: No, yes, but that's yeah, that's crazy that we've been uh closely following this team for almost 10 years, and uh it hasn't really uh, in terms of football, has not led to a lot of happiness for us, but we're thinking this coaching staff's gonna flip that around.
- 4:20SPEAKER_06: Um, and I think this is a fun episode that we've had ever since we've had the podcast because we're talking about what we're optimistic about, what we're pessimistic about going into this season.
- 4:29SPEAKER_06: Uh, we each give three, and it just kind of it kind of levels me out a little bit because of course everybody drinks the Kool-Aid, you know, whether you deny it or not, you can try as hard as you can, but with the stuff that the creative department's putting out, with what Joey's been saying, with uh, you know, the small clips that we've seen of practice, um, we're we're drinking the Kool-Aid on this team, and we're thinking, hey, you know, this team could really go a long way.
- 4:52SPEAKER_06: So this kind of levels me out a little bit and gets me uh gets me in the right mind state, mind state for uh uh for football season.
- 5:01SPEAKER_08: No, I'm with you, man.
- 5:02SPEAKER_08: Like our very first real episode was optimisms and pessimisms about the season.
- 5:08SPEAKER_08: Uh and dude, I I imagine going back and comparing episodes to this one.
- 5:12SPEAKER_08: It's totally, totally different podcast at this point.
- 5:15SPEAKER_08: Um, but dude, I'm with you, man.
- 5:17SPEAKER_08: I this is always a great part of the season because it kind of this is kind of the point in the podcast where I feel like we reset.
- 5:21SPEAKER_08: And this at the beginning of the academy academic year, we just wiped the slate, even though we had a great year last year.
- 5:26SPEAKER_08: The other we're just wiping the slate of athletics, and we're starting a new era, uh, a new dawn of uh tech athletics for this coming academic year.
- 5:34SPEAKER_08: So I'm really excited about it, man.
- 5:35SPEAKER_08: This is kind of just episode, just kind of signals it.
- 5:37SPEAKER_06: Yeah, no, absolutely, and we'll get to those in just a second.
- 5:40SPEAKER_06: But first off, we need to discuss because um we have an official starter, starting quarterback, Tyler Shuck, named the starter by Julie McGuire and Zach Kitley.
- 5:52SPEAKER_06: Um, you know, we all kind of saw it coming, I think, in my in my eyes.
- 5:55SPEAKER_08: I I uh in the preview episode I'm sorry, I was all you you you what you saw this coming?
- 6:04SPEAKER_08: We all saw it coming.
- 6:05SPEAKER_08: I think one of us between the two of us uh predicted that Tyler Shuck will be starting quarterly.
- 6:11SPEAKER_06: This was I didn't predict that Donovan Smith was gonna start.
- 6:14SPEAKER_06: I said I wanted Donovan Smith.
- 6:16SPEAKER_06: Okay, that's fair.
- 6:17SPEAKER_06: That's fair.
- 6:17SPEAKER_06: Now I I knew and I think everybody kind of knew that Tyler Shuck was gonna be the guy.
- 6:22SPEAKER_06: It was an easy guess.
- 6:23SPEAKER_06: I won't lie.
- 6:24SPEAKER_06: The odds were in my favor, dude.
- 6:26SPEAKER_06: I mean, he's a senior going in, he's got experience, and and he went three and one as a starter last year and was out for the majority of that UT game that we lost.
- 6:34SPEAKER_06: So yeah, uh I'm not I'm not saying we would have won that game if Tyler Shuck stayed in because our defense absolutely got destroyed in that.
- 6:41SPEAKER_08: But that was the game Al Wells got fired in, if we're being honest.
- 6:44SPEAKER_08: That or TC like spiritually state.
- 6:47SPEAKER_06: I mean, yeah, you could name all three of those last year.
- 6:49SPEAKER_06: Well, he literally got fired after Kansas State, but yeah, and and Tyler Shuck has now won the starting job, I believe, at three separate years during Springball.
- 6:58SPEAKER_06: He won it at Oregon, he won it first year here, and now he's won it again at Texas Tech.
- 7:04SPEAKER_06: So obviously he's doing something right in Springball.
- 7:06SPEAKER_06: He's uh he's obviously uh, according to the coaching staff, very smart in the classroom.
- 7:12SPEAKER_06: Um, you know, studies, knows the plays, knows the playbook, has uh, you know, and I think that's really what's won him the job.
- 7:19SPEAKER_06: And he's obviously a very talented guy.
- 7:21SPEAKER_06: Um, but you know, I think where Tyler has come up short in the past is that he's just been prone to make some mistakes in big moments.
- 7:30SPEAKER_06: And uh, you know, he's not very decisive in the pocket, he needs to just kind of get that ball out, he hangs on to it a little too long.
- 7:36SPEAKER_06: But I think the talent absolutely is there for him.
- 7:40SPEAKER_06: And, you know, in a new offense, in Zach Kidley's offense, I think he can really shine.
- 7:45SPEAKER_06: So, you know, I'm happy with this pick.
- 7:48SPEAKER_06: Uh, I would have been happy with any of the picks, to be quite honest with you.
- 7:51SPEAKER_06: Uh, but to get an experienced guy like Shuck leading the way in Joey's first year, I think is a probably a pretty good move.
- 7:57SPEAKER_08: You know, I obviously I would say I'd be happy with any pick as well, but at the same time, I think if we picked anybody but Tyler Shuck, I would be a little more nervous going to the season.
- 8:06SPEAKER_08: I feel the most comfortable with this pick.
- 8:07SPEAKER_08: Really?
- 8:08SPEAKER_06: I feel the opposite.
- 8:09SPEAKER_06: I feel the opposite.
- 8:10SPEAKER_06: What?
- 8:10SPEAKER_06: I I honestly do because uh, like I said earlier, I think I said this on the Tailgate Talks podcast when they were uh when they were asking who I wanted to start.
- 8:17SPEAKER_06: And at that time I said Baron Morton.
- 8:20SPEAKER_06: And of course, my mind has changed a million times during the offseason.
- 8:23SPEAKER_06: But uh, you know, to me, if they win with Donovan Smith or Baron Morton, that meant that Zach Kidley and Joey McGuire truly, truly believed in an underclassman to start over the senior, the experienced guy in Tyler Shuck.
- 8:38SPEAKER_06: And to me, that would have almost put more confidence in the younger guy if they chose one of the younger guys versus Shuck.
- 8:45SPEAKER_06: And um, I don't know if it's just like the non-exciting pick for me in that thought process there with Shuck.
- 8:52SPEAKER_06: Like to me, Shuck is the not very exciting choice.
- 8:56SPEAKER_06: Like, I think if Barron Morton was like, if they put out a video that said QB1 and it's freaking Baron Morton, like we would have all been going insane, you know.
- 9:04SPEAKER_06: So I don't know.
- 9:06SPEAKER_06: I I like I said, I would be happy and I am happy with any of these quarterbacks.
- 9:11SPEAKER_06: I think this is the deepest quarterback room at Texas Tech that we've had in a long time, and I think either any all three of these guys are gonna win you games.
- 9:18SPEAKER_08: No, I see what you're saying.
- 9:20SPEAKER_08: Like you're saying that if he named the number guy, that and younger guy, that means that the this guy is just the real freaking deal.
- 9:25SPEAKER_08: Like he's that he's that freaking good that he'd be at a four-star starter at University of Oregon.
- 9:31SPEAKER_08: So, and I I get where you're going, I get where you're going with that.
- 9:35SPEAKER_08: But I don't think that and you're saying how this is the least exciting pick, the most obvious pick, but I think that's that gives me comfort that it is the most obvious pick, because that this guy has got all the tangibles, all the thing on uh everything on paper to say that he's the one that needs to start.
- 9:51SPEAKER_08: You know, I like I said on like uh I think it was uh whatever was it Jackson or was it the tailgate guys that came on, whoever I I said that you know, if if if we're if the University of Oregon believed in the quarter in this quarterback, I think Texas Tech could believe this quarterback in the current state that we're in, you know.
- 10:07SPEAKER_08: So we got we got perennial packed favorites the past decade versus uh a team that's that's been lucky to finish above the bottom three in the Big 12 lately.
- 10:16SPEAKER_08: So I I feel really good about starting this guy.
- 10:19SPEAKER_08: Um, and I really like I really like the idea of him having a higher IQ through experience to run a Kidley offense that's going to be passing the ball downfield more than a Matt Wells offense will.
- 10:29SPEAKER_08: You need a guy that makes better decisions than the one that just shucks it or shucks it as you will.
- 10:34SPEAKER_08: Um, so how many how many shuck punts we could be making?
- 10:37SPEAKER_06: It's gonna be unlimited throughout it's the the door's wide open.
- 10:41SPEAKER_06: Oh, yeah, absolutely.
- 10:42SPEAKER_06: It rhymes with so many different things.
- 10:45SPEAKER_06: But um, you know, now that Tyler Shuck is the quarterback, I I want him to be the quarterback the all season because obviously that would mean he's doing something right and we're probably winning some games or at least playing well while he's there.
- 10:58SPEAKER_06: So yeah, I'm all I'm all aboard the Shuck train.
- 11:00SPEAKER_06: I want him to do awesome.
- 11:02SPEAKER_06: I think he's a really talented kid, and I think he's you know got some serious NFL potential if he just puts it all together.
- 11:09SPEAKER_06: And uh, you know, if he is as smart uh with the playbook as they're you know touting him out to be, I think there's a real chance here that Texas Tech could be pretty good at with him as the starter.
- 11:19SPEAKER_06: So I'm happy with the pick, uh, but I would have been happy with all the picks.
- 11:23SPEAKER_08: Yeah, yeah.
- 11:23SPEAKER_08: Two two two questions that ran out, uh Chuckle from my side.
- 11:26SPEAKER_08: So so one, oh, obviously you want him to do awesome.
- 11:30SPEAKER_08: I do too.
- 11:30SPEAKER_08: That means we're winning games.
- 11:32SPEAKER_08: But two, I'm glad it's the oldest guy in the locker room, you know, because I don't know how desperate the guys behind him are ready to start.
- 11:41SPEAKER_08: You know, I think a lot of people go think of college kids wanting to be on the field the entire time.
- 11:45SPEAKER_08: But I think a lot of guys think that, you know, no, I'd rather develop myself and make sure I'm ready to be in the show when I'm in the show.
- 11:52SPEAKER_08: Because if I don't show up in the show, I'm a goner, you know, I'm a I'm a I'm a chump.
- 11:56SPEAKER_08: So I'm I'm hoping that just because Shuck is starting doesn't mean that you know it the the guys in the back are looking for a way out or just aren't that good.
- 12:07SPEAKER_08: What do you think about what it was?
- 12:08SPEAKER_06: Is this is this like kind of are you saying you hope that these guys don't look to transfer?
- 12:13SPEAKER_08: Yeah, yeah, that's definitely a question there for that.
- 12:15SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I think it wasn't much of a question as more of a statement quite with a question mark.
- 12:19SPEAKER_06: No, yeah, no, I think that's a reasonable way of thinking.
- 12:22SPEAKER_06: I and I've had this conversation with you and our other buddies and uh, you know, other other Texas Tech people.
- 12:28SPEAKER_06: And uh to me, in my eyes, um, you know, if Tyler Shuck plays the whole season and uh, you know, Donovan's maybe got a few packages for him throughout the year, some goal line stuff or whatever, and Bort and Morton just kind of you know sticks to the sideline like he did last year.
- 12:45SPEAKER_06: Um, and we make this a true quarterback competition next season between Morton and and Smith, you know, the guy that doesn't win that job is probably gonna transfer.
- 12:56SPEAKER_06: And I don't blame them for doing that, especially Barron Morton at that point would be would have been sitting two years.
- 13:03SPEAKER_06: Uh Donovan would have been sitting a year after he played pretty darn good in his few games under an interim coach.
- 13:10SPEAKER_06: Um, so you know, I I I don't think they're worried about that though.
- 13:15SPEAKER_06: Joey said that multiple times in in uh in interviews, and he's pretty transparent with the media.
- 13:21SPEAKER_06: That's something I love about Joey Maguire is he doesn't, you know, do a lot of coach speak.
- 13:25SPEAKER_06: He kind of speaks to what he's actually thinking.
- 13:28SPEAKER_06: And um, you know, he says stuff like he he will kind of mock that question, be like, well, you know, everybody's gonna wonder, oh, are we waiting to name a quarterback so one guy doesn't transfer, you know, something like that?
- 13:42SPEAKER_06: When I think it's it was truly a three-horse competition, and it really came down to the last minute.
- 13:49SPEAKER_06: And and you know, that were two weeks before the Murray State game.
- 13:53SPEAKER_06: You know, this is this is one of the last minutes that we could have named a starting quarterback, and they did.
- 13:59SPEAKER_06: So I think Barron showed a lot, I think Donovan showed a lot, and I think Tyler Shuck showed a lot, but Tyler's the more experienced guy, and he showed out in in camp the best.
- 14:08SPEAKER_08: Yeah, you you just sparked my memory about the uh second question I was gonna ask you.
- 14:12SPEAKER_08: Uh, I was gonna ask you if you if since now that Tyler Shuck is what most people would have guessed would be the starter.
- 14:19SPEAKER_08: Do you think all this we're gonna make packages with with Donovan and Barron as coach speak to kind of be like everyone is just as involved as Shuck was my was my question, but I think you kind of answered it right there.
- 14:31SPEAKER_06: Well, yeah, and and Joey said in his latest one, he was like, they're all gonna have a package for Murray State, and that's because they're expecting to kill Murray State.
- 14:38SPEAKER_06: That's why he said that.
- 14:40SPEAKER_06: I don't think Baron Morton is gonna have packages when we're playing Texas or when we're playing Kansas State, or you know Smith does then.
- 14:47SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I do think Donovan Smith will because Donovan Smith, we saw last year that they used him in packages, you know, certain goal line stands or maybe a third and short situation or something like that, because he is such a different type of quarterback, he's a more physical runner.
- 15:01SPEAKER_06: Um, you know, he's he's just a uh he's just got that type of flow to him where something that Tyler Shuck is not a physical runner, neither is Barron Morton.
- 15:12SPEAKER_06: Those guys can run and they can take off, but Donovan Smith can get yards after contact.
- 15:17SPEAKER_06: And so I can see them using Donovan Smith the goal line stuff.
- 15:21SPEAKER_06: I can see uh, but I don't really see them using Baron Morton long term during the season for certain packages, you know.
- 15:30SPEAKER_06: Um, but yeah, I I I think I think Shuck's gonna play um specifically about Murray State.
- 15:36SPEAKER_06: I think Shuck's gonna play, you know, probably three quarters of that game.
- 15:38SPEAKER_06: And if we're winning, we're gonna throw Morton in there, and then throughout we'll have some certain packages for Donovan Smith.
- 15:44SPEAKER_08: So as we should.
- 15:45SPEAKER_06: And yeah, and as we should.
- 15:47SPEAKER_06: I think Donovan Smith is is a weapon that we should utilize this year.
- 15:51SPEAKER_06: And just because he's not the starting quarterback doesn't mean we can't use him in certain ways.
- 15:55SPEAKER_08: I mean, he is your favorite, and the guy the guy really earned it.
- 15:58SPEAKER_08: I mean, they got the the guy took us to our first bowl game, and since God knows when.
- 16:01SPEAKER_08: So um props to him, and obviously, uh props to Sonny Cumby.
- 16:05SPEAKER_08: I mean, we we gotta keep up with the LA Bulldogs as well.
- 16:07SPEAKER_08: So the LA Tech Bulldogs.
- 16:09SPEAKER_08: So um definitely cheering for our boy Cumby over in uh in Rustin as well.
- 16:13SPEAKER_08: Definitely have my uh they're probably my favorite G5 team this year, absolutely.
- 16:16SPEAKER_08: So um, yeah, man.
- 16:17SPEAKER_08: I I hey dude, it's we say that we should be able to plug in Baron Morton in the Murray State game, but it's been a while since we've just crushed an FCS team.
- 16:27SPEAKER_08: So uh, but that's why we're excited about this new era, which is where we're gonna review the schedule in a second.
- 16:32SPEAKER_08: So I obviously that's gonna come into play here.
- 16:35SPEAKER_06: Yeah, no, I mean, yeah, we'll get to that when we talk about uh uh the schedule breakdown just briefly um for all y'all, but we need to get into optimisms and pessimisms because uh the majority of this uh of the football preview was very optimistic.
- 16:50SPEAKER_06: Uh, there wasn't, you know, and we went on uh a K-State podcast, uh, you know, the College and Kimball podcast with with Jeff Burkhart, and uh we were very optimistic.
- 17:00SPEAKER_06: And that's really in my eyes, because you know, we're picked ninth in a lot of these, we're picked eighth.
- 17:05SPEAKER_06: We're some were picked 10th.
- 17:06SPEAKER_08: A very normal place for us to have been this past decade or so.
- 17:10SPEAKER_06: There really is a lot of talent on this team.
- 17:13SPEAKER_06: Um, in my eyes, I really think there are pieces on this team that can lead to a successful football team if coached the right way.
- 17:21SPEAKER_06: So, but we also want to, you know, ease expectations.
- 17:27SPEAKER_06: And and although I'm expecting a pretty good season out of the Red Raiders, you know, we also have to understand that it is Joey's first year.
- 17:36SPEAKER_06: And we've said that time and time again.
- 17:37SPEAKER_06: The people understand it.
- 17:39SPEAKER_06: Um, but we picked out different parts of this team, whether it's the Big 12, whether it's Texas Tech, whether it's the roster, the coaching staff, whatever.
- 17:46SPEAKER_06: We picked out three optimisms and three pessimisms for both of us about this team moving forward.
- 17:52SPEAKER_06: Uh, so let's just get into that.
- 17:53SPEAKER_06: Let's get into let's start with pessimism so we can end with an optimism.
- 17:58SPEAKER_06: I like it.
- 17:59SPEAKER_06: I like it.
- 17:59SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 18:00SPEAKER_06: So you go go with your first uh go with your first pessimism.
- 18:03SPEAKER_08: All right, my first pessimism.
- 18:04SPEAKER_08: I hope I don't have people all over me about my first pessimism, but it because it's kind of like how can you be excited about the season if you say this?
- 18:12SPEAKER_08: But my first pessimism is probably the most obvious.
- 18:14SPEAKER_08: It's um coach Joey McGuire has never coached a single college football game as a head coach, and with that comes some inexperience with that position, you know.
- 18:27SPEAKER_08: As an executive at the highest level in the game, you have to be able to make the calls when you need to, and uh, and obviously, and uh make sure we stay in the game, make sure we're prepped, and we just don't know if Joey McGuire can do that.
- 18:42SPEAKER_08: Any anyone that says he can is just being optimistic, and I can I'm saying he can, but we don't know if he can do this yet.
- 18:50SPEAKER_08: So, this is a prove it season for Joey Maguire in the sense that hey, I've been a head coach at the high school level, which is nothing to sniff at here in Texas, but he's just never had that helm at the college level, and I think that's the most obvious problem that national media would have with us, and that you know, realistic people looking at the season would have with us until we really get going.
- 19:13SPEAKER_06: Yeah, no, I think a lot of people share that with you.
- 19:15SPEAKER_06: And whether, you know, Joey's fired up the fan base, he's done as good a job as any uh in his first few months as you know, uh a power five football coach.
- 19:25SPEAKER_06: Um, he's recruiting like crazy.
- 19:27SPEAKER_06: Um, you know, it seems like he's got these guys and a good mindset, he's got this uh whole brand, you know, that he's building at Texas Tech, which is great.
- 19:35SPEAKER_06: But yeah, there is that pessimism that he has not coached a power five game, and he's never even been a coordinator at the power five level.
- 19:43SPEAKER_06: And now I don't think he needed to go that route.
- 19:46SPEAKER_06: I think Joey's done a fine job in getting to where he is and he's completely earned a head coaching job, but um, you know, there is an unknown factor.
- 19:54SPEAKER_06: So I I agree with you that that's something you know you can be pessimistic about.
- 19:58SPEAKER_06: And this isn't something that we're like negative on.
- 20:00SPEAKER_06: We think he's going to do bad, it's just something that's unknown.
- 20:04SPEAKER_06: And I think that's a that's a normal thing uh to have running through your mind going into the season.
- 20:08SPEAKER_06: So I I can I tend to agree with that one.
- 20:11SPEAKER_06: Um, my first pessimism is uh is the offensive line.
- 20:16SPEAKER_06: Um, you know, it was it was a pessimism that I had last year.
- 20:20SPEAKER_06: Um, this offensive line was not very good last year, and now we're doing kind of a complete revamp right now, but we're bringing in some junior college people, we're bringing in um some, you know, G5, granted, you know, very talented, won some awards type players.
- 20:41SPEAKER_06: Uh, but this is just an offensive line that's brand new.
- 20:45SPEAKER_06: And I just don't know uh what we're gonna get out of them.
- 20:50SPEAKER_06: It's kind of the same thing with Joey here.
- 20:52SPEAKER_06: You know, it's uh it's just a tough um thing to kind of understand and kind of say, hey, yes, I'm very optimistic about this offensive line.
- 21:01SPEAKER_06: I like Coach Hambi.
- 21:02SPEAKER_06: Uh everything that he said so far, everything that he's about, I I'm I'm optimistic about, but it's just the personnel that we have on this offensive line.
- 21:12SPEAKER_06: Uh, I'm not I'm not super optimistic about.
- 21:15SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I like the way you phrase the frame that uh because you you listen to you and I talk about anybody, anybody on the coaching staff, and we're fired up about them.
- 21:23SPEAKER_08: Coach Hambi, finally an offensive line coach, I care about.
- 21:27SPEAKER_08: You know, I I don't I can't I I probably couldn't tell you like the last time I was actually excited about a guy at that position because one, it's just not a sexy position.
- 21:37SPEAKER_08: You know, your average fan, and I'm I'm not an average fan, obviously.
- 21:40SPEAKER_08: I host a Texas Tech podcast, but most most fans just it's just not something you're fired up about.
- 21:46SPEAKER_08: But the guy brings energy to the team, you know, and I love what he does with it, but it's been a point of problem here at Texas Tech.
- 21:53SPEAKER_08: I mean, how count how many times a quarterback has gone out for injury each season, and a lot of that goes on the offensive line.
- 22:00SPEAKER_08: Line because the guy's running for his life.
- 22:02SPEAKER_08: So I'm with you, man.
- 22:03SPEAKER_08: It's just big men and Texas Tech has been an issue, whether it's on the offensive line or on the defensive line.
- 22:10SPEAKER_08: It's just a problem.
- 22:11SPEAKER_08: So it's just, I totally get where you're coming from with that.
- 22:14SPEAKER_08: It's a pretty easy pick for Texas Tech for sure on the negative side.
- 22:17SPEAKER_06: Yeah, for sure.
- 22:18SPEAKER_06: But uh let's go, let's go positive because we like being positive.
- 22:21SPEAKER_06: Give me your first optimism.
- 22:23SPEAKER_08: First optimism, dude.
- 22:25SPEAKER_08: That's easy.
- 22:26SPEAKER_08: You know, I have to can I I'll go with the low-hanging fruit.
- 22:29SPEAKER_08: This quarterback room is the real freaking deal.
- 22:32SPEAKER_08: I mean, you pick any one of them, and I would have been pumped about the season coming up.
- 22:36SPEAKER_08: And I know that's easy.
- 22:37SPEAKER_08: We're talking about football and you're talking about the freaking quarterback, but you know, it it's been a while since we've been just fired up about a quarterback at TechTech, and I'm fired up about three of them, you know.
- 22:48SPEAKER_08: And it's just it's finally great to see that that that sort of excitement go back to a program that has its identity built on top of it.
- 22:57SPEAKER_08: So I'm really looking forward to this quarterback room.
- 22:59SPEAKER_06: Yeah, no, I thought we've said it when we were talking about Tyler Shuck, all three of these guys can start games and win you games in the Big 12.
- 23:06SPEAKER_06: And now, if you go back to our other optimisms and pessimisms episodes, both before the 2020 season and the 2021 season, I think we've had a lot of good to say about the quarterback room.
- 23:17SPEAKER_06: Uh, when in reality it wasn't all that great.
- 23:20SPEAKER_06: And uh, we were probably uh, you know, too high on uh on guys like Henry Columbi and Jed.
- 23:25SPEAKER_06: Otherwood Henry, baby.
- 23:26SPEAKER_06: Heisen Henry Heisen Henry, man.
- 23:30SPEAKER_06: Uh go herd.
- 23:33SPEAKER_06: We'll see.
- 23:34SPEAKER_06: Uh uh also blocked us on Twitter.
- 23:36SPEAKER_06: So uh shouts out, shout out to Dr.
- 23:38SPEAKER_07: Love Me.
- 23:40SPEAKER_06: Um no, but uh you're right.
- 23:43SPEAKER_06: I mean, Tyler Shuck has proven that he can win you some games.
- 23:47SPEAKER_06: Donovan Smith has also proven that he can win you some games, and I think Barron Morton's one of your best quarterback recruits of all time.
- 23:53SPEAKER_06: So he's the best.
- 23:54SPEAKER_08: Wait, no, or I guess it's Graham or Barron higher.
- 23:57SPEAKER_08: I think Baron's I don't know.
- 23:58SPEAKER_06: One of those two.
- 23:59SPEAKER_08: I think Barron Morton's the highest quarterback you've ever had recruited.
- 24:02SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I mean, regardless, he's he's one of the most talented kids you've ever brought onto Texas Sex campus.
- 24:07SPEAKER_06: He's a Texas Tech fan, you know, growing up.
- 24:09SPEAKER_06: So Texas kid.
- 24:11SPEAKER_06: Um yeah, exactly.
- 24:12SPEAKER_06: So uh I I have confidence in all three of these guys, and uh, you know, if Shuck doesn't meet the standard that we need to, I'm fine with going to Donovan or going to Barron.
- 24:20SPEAKER_06: I really am.
- 24:21SPEAKER_06: So um, yeah, I completely agree with that uh optimism you have there.
- 24:26SPEAKER_06: Um, my first optimism, a little uh a little different because I think it's kind of going against the grain of what uh some people are saying um this offseason when talking about Texas Tech receivers.
- 24:40SPEAKER_06: I am very, very optimistic about our outside receivers right now.
- 24:46SPEAKER_06: Like, you know, everyone's gonna say Miles Price because he's obviously very talented and he's awesome and he's gonna, you know, put up some huge numbers uh this season.
- 24:56SPEAKER_06: But I have a lot of confidence in guys like Joran Bradley, guys like JJ Sparkman, guys like Loick Fungi, uh, you know, the the local kid.
- 25:06SPEAKER_06: I I just all these guys are so big and they have all the talent in the world.
- 25:12SPEAKER_06: And it's if they can put it together, and it seems like throughout this offseason, there's been only, you know, really, really good things said about guys like Durant Bradley and JJ Sparkman.
- 25:23SPEAKER_06: Um, and I think if you're throwing all three of these guys out there, you have absolute weapons that you can throw it up to.
- 25:30SPEAKER_06: Are they gonna be Eric Azukama?
- 25:32SPEAKER_06: Probably not, at least not this year.
- 25:34SPEAKER_06: But I think these three guys in particular are going to have breakout seasons here at Texas Tech, and I think they're gonna be utilized really well in Kitley's system.
- 25:44SPEAKER_08: Wow, you and I were very brave on saying Texas Tech's gonna have a good quarterback and wide receiver, aren't we?
- 25:50SPEAKER_08: That was some really brave stuff from Twitter.
- 25:52SPEAKER_07: It's brave from the last couple seasons, dude.
- 25:55SPEAKER_08: I mean, not so much from the wide receiver standpoint.
- 25:58SPEAKER_08: I mean, we've always had some freaking studs, but um, no, I mean, obviously, I this is kind of like my catchphrase when it comes to the offense on this podcast is if there's a position I'm never worried about, it's the wide receiver.
- 26:08SPEAKER_08: I mean, wide receivers will come to Texas Tech.
- 26:10SPEAKER_08: You know, we usually facilitate a system that puts up numbers for them, so they want to come here.
- 26:15SPEAKER_08: We utilize them.
- 26:16SPEAKER_08: So I'm totally with you, man.
- 26:18SPEAKER_08: And obviously, we've kind of been repeating this lately that we're looking for a breakout star on that squad.
- 26:23SPEAKER_08: So, and I think there will be one that steps up.
- 26:26SPEAKER_08: It's just natural for our school to do so.
- 26:28SPEAKER_08: We put we put out some of the most prolific wide receivers to ever be play the game, and that's just I don't expect anything less coming from this new squad.
- 26:37SPEAKER_06: Yep, for sure.
- 26:38SPEAKER_06: All right, bring us back down.
- 26:39SPEAKER_06: What you got?
- 26:40SPEAKER_08: Oh, okay.
- 26:42SPEAKER_08: So, dude, with this one, how about we go ahead and say the one we both agree on?
- 26:46SPEAKER_08: Uh, let's just go ahead and ground us as we're flying high.
- 26:50SPEAKER_08: This schedule's ridiculous.
- 26:52SPEAKER_08: This is the toughest schedule I've ever seen us play in recent memory.
- 26:56SPEAKER_08: I can't recall a season that's tougher than this.
- 26:59SPEAKER_08: I mean, you're coming out of the you're coming out of the gate with two ranked teams out of conference, you know.
- 27:03SPEAKER_08: And we're we're gonna be playing enough ranked teams in in conference as it is, and you're playing two awesome teams.
- 27:10SPEAKER_08: One of them is even a dark horse favorite to make the playoff.
- 27:15SPEAKER_08: So it's this thing is crazy.
- 27:18SPEAKER_08: And the problem is is you have a new coach who's never coached a single game, so he's being tossed right into the fire with this with this uh schedule.
- 27:28SPEAKER_08: This is probably the hardest schedule in the in the the Big 12.
- 27:31SPEAKER_08: I know UT's playing Alabama, but damn, this this is this this crap is unreal.
- 27:38SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I mean, I think uh I think I saw in somebody's when they were all you know the the the nerds that uh you know throw down all the analysis on who's got the toughest schedule and everything like that.
- 27:48SPEAKER_06: I think Texas Tech ranks in like the top 10 of toughest schedules, and that's because of the non-con.
- 27:53SPEAKER_06: You're playing uh uh two preseason ranked top 25 teams, uh, one of which is away, uh, one of which you get at home.
- 28:00SPEAKER_06: And um, you know, it's and and then you open up UT at Kansas State and then at Oklahoma State.
- 28:06SPEAKER_06: So uh that's a killer first three conference games as well.
- 28:10SPEAKER_06: So, you know, it's never easy in this conference.
- 28:14SPEAKER_06: Uh, we always like to eat each other alive, uh, you know, maybe minus Oklahoma.
- 28:19SPEAKER_06: But um, you know, the these two non-con teams, this is the toughest non-con we've had in a long time at Texas Tech, having two of these teams.
- 28:28SPEAKER_06: And now normally, you know, Houston being the G5 team that they are currently, that they're g5 and next currently though.
- 28:36SPEAKER_06: Well, yeah, but they won't be here in here in next year.
- 28:39SPEAKER_08: Even still, Houston has never been a real G5 team.
- 28:43SPEAKER_08: They they've always been a cut above.
- 28:46SPEAKER_08: You know, they're there, they've always been a team that you don't just schedule.
- 28:49SPEAKER_08: We're gonna go home and home with them for a reason.
- 28:51SPEAKER_08: You know, you don't just do that with any old G5 team.
- 28:53SPEAKER_08: Houston is the real deal, even in the G5 level.
- 28:55SPEAKER_06: Not yeah, I mean, you're talking no, and you're right.
- 28:58SPEAKER_06: You're talking about a team that returned basically, you know, their entire offense and a lot of their defense uh on a on a team that won went 12 and 2 last year.
- 29:07SPEAKER_06: So, with one of those losses, by the way, being to Texas Tech, the other one being to a playoff contender in Cincinnati.
- 29:15SPEAKER_06: So, you know, Houston is gonna be uh Craig, and we'll get we can talk about them when we get to the schedule breakdown, but them in NC State, I mean, this schedule is absolutely and that's why a lot of people have us at five wins or have us at you know, potentially ninth place or or tenth place in the Big 12, because we do have one of the toughest schedules.
- 29:35SPEAKER_08: Yeah, we we should probably stop it there because I don't want to spend too much energy talk about the schedule before we get there, because obviously I have some thoughts on it.
- 29:42SPEAKER_08: Uh, the last word I will say there is a lot of national riders are giving us a reluctant five wins.
- 29:48SPEAKER_08: Like you know, we get we're getting the classic best five-win team in the country, and not in a meme sense, but in the sense that this schedule's just nut so.
- 29:56SPEAKER_08: So it it I really do think that it's gonna bite us in the in the behind, but uh that's that's all that again, a pessimism for a reason for both of us.
- 30:04SPEAKER_06: Yeah, no, absolutely.
- 30:06SPEAKER_06: Um, my second pessimism, I will go with the another position group.
- 30:10SPEAKER_06: I'll go with the inside linebackers.
- 30:12SPEAKER_06: We mentioned this when we talked about Jack talked to Jackson uh on our football preview.
- 30:17SPEAKER_06: Krishan Merriweather's your only guy that is known a known commodity, you know.
- 30:24SPEAKER_06: Um, you bring in Dimitri Moore, who has the past couple seasons spent at Missouri State.
- 30:30SPEAKER_06: Yeah, he started off really well, was an all-sec uh freshman type player, uh, you know, had a lot of tackles at Vanderbilt.
- 30:38SPEAKER_06: But since then, you know, he transferred to Missouri State and he hasn't been a guy, you know, to be quite honest with you.
- 30:45SPEAKER_06: Uh, you have a you have somebody in Jacob Rodriguez, who was a quarterback at one point during his collegiate career that is now a potential starter for you at inside linebacker.
- 30:55SPEAKER_06: You know, there's just not a lot of known commodities.
- 30:59SPEAKER_06: And there's Krishna Merriweather, who is a very solid run defender, again, not very good in coverage.
- 31:05SPEAKER_06: So uh it's yeah, this is a position group that is very thin in my eyes, and uh just even at the top, not very good.
- 31:14SPEAKER_06: So um I think we have some awesome outside linebackers, I think we have an awesome secondary, I think we have uh some really good players on this defensive line.
- 31:24SPEAKER_06: But in terms of the inside linebackers, this is something uh that I'm gonna be watching and I hope we overachieve on because uh uh on paper, it it just doesn't look very good.
- 31:34SPEAKER_08: I like that you pick a position group, um, to to touch on the pessimisms.
- 31:39SPEAKER_08: And obviously, not a whole lot of people are gonna be surprised uh with us picking a defensive unit, but linebackers have been so damn solid in Lubbock the past few years, so it's kind of like a a wide receiver situation where it's been kind of like next man up.
- 31:55SPEAKER_08: Hope they uh they kill it.
- 31:56SPEAKER_08: I feel like you and I have been kind of throwing this back and forth at each other for the past few episodes.
- 32:01SPEAKER_08: Um, but uh dude, I feel you.
- 32:03SPEAKER_08: It's just yeah, it's a lot of unknowns, and that's usually how we deem a pessimism is the unknown.
- 32:08SPEAKER_06: Yeah, and and what you're saying is these last couple of years, we've gone from oh, I don't know, Dakota Allen to Jordan Brooks to Rico Jeffers to Colin Schooler.
- 32:17SPEAKER_06: Like we've always had that guy, we don't really have that guy on the linebacking core.
- 32:22SPEAKER_06: Now, could that guy be Christian Merriweather?
- 32:25SPEAKER_06: Potentially, could that guy be Dimitri Moore?
- 32:27SPEAKER_06: Potentially, you know, but we don't know.
- 32:30SPEAKER_06: And I feel like we are more we were more optimistic going into the previous seasons on this unit because we had that guy and we don't, we just don't.
- 32:40SPEAKER_06: At least right now, we don't.
- 32:41SPEAKER_06: So that's why I'm pessimistic on it.
- 32:44SPEAKER_06: That's fair, yeah.
- 32:46SPEAKER_06: Absolutely.
- 32:47SPEAKER_06: So, uh, all right, second optimism.
- 32:49SPEAKER_08: Go ahead.
- 32:50SPEAKER_08: All right, second optimism.
- 32:51SPEAKER_08: You mind if I uh step away from the field and kind of go at non-tangibles?
- 32:54SPEAKER_08: Go ahead, kind of go outside the box here.
- 32:56SPEAKER_08: Yeah, all right.
- 32:57SPEAKER_08: So uh my second positive, uh positive here is the fan buy-in.
- 33:03SPEAKER_08: The fan buy-in has been unbelievable.
- 33:07SPEAKER_08: I've never seen our fan base this fired up about Texas Tech football since I'd say uh our underclassman years of college.
- 33:17SPEAKER_08: Um, our freshman year, where there's a lot of hype.
- 33:19SPEAKER_08: Steve and I uh our freshman year was 2014.
- 33:22SPEAKER_08: So during the Cliff Kingsbury like absolute honeymoon, where he was the freaking man.
- 33:27SPEAKER_08: And I would say we're at those levels, if not higher.
- 33:30SPEAKER_08: So it's the amount of buy-in with the with the the the the uh facility renovations, the donor donations, the fan buy, the the fan excitement on Twitter, the uh the season ticket sales, I think we're gonna be packing the Jones at least at the beginning of the season.
- 33:46SPEAKER_08: I mean, if things fall off, things fall off.
- 33:48SPEAKER_08: But I really think that the fan buy-in is got an absolute peak because of the coaching staff and the whole department around him, like Kirby Hokut, really blowing it up.
- 33:56SPEAKER_08: So I think that the fan by I think this is this means more than people really realize.
- 34:00SPEAKER_08: That the fan, if fans aren't buying it bought in, that coach will not last long.
- 34:04SPEAKER_08: Look at look at Matt Wall, Matt Wells.
- 34:07SPEAKER_08: He's a great example of what happens when fans never really accept him.
- 34:11SPEAKER_08: And Joe McGuire has been bought in.
- 34:14SPEAKER_08: So that guy has bought himself some extra years, even if he sucks at the beginning.
- 34:18SPEAKER_06: Yeah, and Joey's, I was just about to say, Joey's already done way more for the fan base than Wells ever did.
- 34:24SPEAKER_06: You know, and that's just you know, Joey has made an honest commitment to connect to West Texas and connect to these people.
- 34:30SPEAKER_06: Matt Wells never did that, and so uh, you know, we were more eager to get rid of Matt Wells because of that factor.
- 34:36SPEAKER_06: And we weren't upset about it, you know.
- 34:38SPEAKER_06: No, it weren't like this.
- 34:40SPEAKER_08: We were sad to see Clip go.
- 34:42SPEAKER_08: Yeah, even though even though he sucked, even though he was really sneaking at the end, we were still sad that he got fired.
- 34:48SPEAKER_08: We did not feel that with Matt Wells.
- 34:50SPEAKER_06: Yeah, and so yeah, obviously Joey's still got to show it.
- 34:54SPEAKER_06: He hasn't coached the game yet.
- 34:55SPEAKER_06: Um, but yeah, I think that is something to be optimistic about because I haven't seen we've seen how great this fan base can be when we're when we have a winning team.
- 35:04SPEAKER_06: You know, look at baseball, look at basketball, look at all this stuff.
- 35:08SPEAKER_06: We have one of the best home courts in the entire country in men's basketball, and that can absolutely carry over to football.
- 35:15SPEAKER_06: We just haven't been shown it for a decade plus, you know.
- 35:18SPEAKER_06: So if we can get this going in the right direction, and I think Joey's had, you know, as good a start as any as a as a head coach, you know, before before he's coached his first game.
- 35:27SPEAKER_06: Um, I he's got the fan base juiced, and I'm juiced and I'm ready.
- 35:31SPEAKER_06: Uh, you know, the fans are gonna show out for Murray State, the fans are gonna show out for Houston.
- 35:35SPEAKER_06: Uh, if we can consistently show fight and have close games, even if we lose some of these, even if we lose to UT or something like that, if we're close and we're fighting and we're not giving up like we did last season in in the UT, TCU, Kansas State, whatever game, you can name a million of them.
- 35:53SPEAKER_06: Um, you know, I think this fan base is going to keep coming back and they're gonna keep giving Joey chances.
- 35:58SPEAKER_06: And it's not, you know, it's not a one-year deal, it's a multi-year process.
- 36:01SPEAKER_08: Yeah, it goes beyond, it goes beyond Joey McGuire.
- 36:04SPEAKER_08: Yeah, it goes to the players.
- 36:05SPEAKER_08: The players see it, the players feel it.
- 36:07SPEAKER_08: You know, I I can count on I can count uh on more than fingers than I have when the players are complaining about like, man, I wish uh the fans would come out a little more.
- 36:15SPEAKER_08: Well, guys, I mean, it's just every time we're at home, we lose.
- 36:19SPEAKER_08: Yeah, that that that really wears and tears on a fan base.
- 36:22SPEAKER_08: So, but I think it's different now just because they understand what the fans want and they're feeding that.
- 36:28SPEAKER_08: So I I really I think the fans are really bought in, and that means a lot for our program.
- 36:32SPEAKER_06: Yeah, absolutely.
- 36:33SPEAKER_06: That's that's a good optimism.
- 36:34SPEAKER_06: I didn't I didn't think of that the fan base um just just as juiced and ready to win.
- 36:39SPEAKER_06: Uh, and that's definitely something to be optimistic about because it leads to a better home field advantage, which we have not had.
- 36:44SPEAKER_06: Uh, and that's a better culture, it's yeah, exactly.
- 36:47SPEAKER_06: Everything yeah, that's not all the fancy important part.
- 36:50SPEAKER_06: They haven't given us anything to show up, you know.
- 36:53SPEAKER_06: So now I hope they do.
- 36:54SPEAKER_06: Um my second optimism, and I think it's another pretty obvious one, Zach Kitley.
- 37:00SPEAKER_06: Zach Kidley's uh something to be very optimistic about going into this season.
- 37:04SPEAKER_06: He's a guy who learned under Cliff.
- 37:07SPEAKER_06: And despite what you think about Cliff, um, he's an unbelievable offensive mind.
- 37:13SPEAKER_06: Uh the guy knows how to score, the guy knows how to put points on the board, and uh it was just you know a multitude of things that happened during Cliff's uh Cliff's head coach tenure um went wrong, that he did not do right.
- 37:30SPEAKER_06: But what was never in question was that we were gonna score and that we were gonna uh have good plays together, and our offense was gonna be ready and it was gonna be fun and it was gonna be electric.
- 37:39SPEAKER_06: And I think Zach Kitley is gonna bring that same sort of thing, except this time we have a more experienced defensive coordinator and we have a head coach that's gonna put more emphasis on the defense uh in in both recruiting, coaching, everything.
- 37:53SPEAKER_06: And you know, Zach Kitley is a guy who has succeeded every step of the way at such a young age.
- 38:01SPEAKER_06: And to have one of the more exciting young coaches in the game is always a good thing in my eyes.
- 38:09SPEAKER_06: Uh, the way that uh even Zarnel Fish or uh Emmett Jones or uh you know Joey Maguire, always he calls him the guru because they really truly believe that this guy is one of the smartest in the game and is gonna bring a sort of offense that is going to absolutely work and put points on the board.
- 38:31SPEAKER_08: Look, I I know you keep saying that he's young and keep comparing him to other young coaches, but I want the people to understand how young this guy is.
- 38:39SPEAKER_08: Look, this guy is in his early 30s.
- 38:42SPEAKER_08: Look, look at anybody at this level in the game with this high of praise in his early 30s.
- 38:49SPEAKER_08: He is my brother's age.
- 38:50SPEAKER_08: My brother is 30 years old.
- 38:52SPEAKER_08: I'm pretty sure Zach Kitley's also just 30 years old at this level.
- 38:58SPEAKER_08: You know, and it I I've said you know I've agreed, this is you know I've agreed over and over again.
- 39:02SPEAKER_08: We said this on the K-State podcast, I said this on the K-State podcast that after Joe McGuire, Zach Kitley is probably the most exciting ad to the team with this new era.
- 39:12SPEAKER_08: And the guy couldn't be more perfect for this new era.
- 39:17SPEAKER_08: He's a West Texan, he's from Abilene, Texas.
- 39:20SPEAKER_08: His dad is a legend at Texas Tech, winning a national championship in the in track.
- 39:26SPEAKER_08: He went to Texas Tech.
- 39:30SPEAKER_08: He coached under the greatest offensive mind Texas Tech has ever produced in Cliff Kingsbury.
- 39:36SPEAKER_08: This guy is the perfect specimen for being a coach at Texas Tech, especially at the quarterback position.
- 39:44SPEAKER_08: The guy is the real deal, he's the future.
- 39:47SPEAKER_08: And I think sadly, we will lose him to a head coaching position sooner rather than later.
- 39:53SPEAKER_06: And that's fine.
- 39:54SPEAKER_08: That's fine.
- 39:55SPEAKER_08: I'm not saying sadly as him just for losing him.
- 39:57SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah.
- 39:58SPEAKER_06: No, I mean that's that's fine because uh we mentioned this with Jackson.
- 40:02SPEAKER_06: Um, we can't be afraid of coaches leaving because that happens everywhere, you know.
- 40:07SPEAKER_06: Nick Saban loses a freaking offensive coordinator every single year or a defensive coordinator because these guys are are really solid and want to take the next step.
- 40:17SPEAKER_06: I don't know, I don't know one coach in the game of college football that wants to be a coordinator.
- 40:22SPEAKER_08: Name a human being that doesn't want a promotion, yeah, exactly.
- 40:25SPEAKER_06: So um, you know, we want Zach Kitley to succeed.
- 40:28SPEAKER_06: We don't want him to be, you know, just good enough so he'll stay here.
- 40:32SPEAKER_06: We want him to be as good as he possibly can be.
- 40:34SPEAKER_06: And, you know, if he moves on, he moves on.
- 40:37SPEAKER_06: But what we know about Zach Kittley is he loves Texas Tech and he loves Lubbock and he loves being back here and being in the position that he is.
- 40:44SPEAKER_06: And being 31 years old, I mean, he is, I mean, as as set up as any young coach can be right now.
- 40:52SPEAKER_06: And um, it's just probably the most exciting thing about this entire coaching staff to me is Zach Kittley.
- 40:59SPEAKER_08: Yeah, no, 100% full agreement.
- 41:01SPEAKER_08: Yep.
- 41:02SPEAKER_08: I hope we can hang on to him as long as we can go on some magical runs before he gets hired away because that guy's the future.
- 41:06SPEAKER_06: Yep, absolutely.
- 41:08SPEAKER_06: All right, man, go ahead.
- 41:10SPEAKER_06: Last pessimism.
- 41:12SPEAKER_08: Oh man, I had trouble coming up with more than two, dude.
- 41:16SPEAKER_08: Like, oh my gosh, what the heck do I do from here, man?
- 41:20SPEAKER_07: Um you want me to go?
- 41:23SPEAKER_08: Yeah, you go first, man.
- 41:24SPEAKER_08: I think I have it in my head.
- 41:25SPEAKER_08: I just I don't have a really good third pessimism.
- 41:28SPEAKER_06: I mean, that's cool, man.
- 41:29SPEAKER_06: You're excited.
- 41:29SPEAKER_06: That's not a bad thing.
- 41:30SPEAKER_06: Exactly.
- 41:31SPEAKER_06: Um, my my pessimism, my final pessimism, I'll say.
- 41:36SPEAKER_06: Uh, we talked about the schedule, we talked about the offensive line, the inside linebackers.
- 41:41SPEAKER_06: Um the defensive line, they have some dudes.
- 41:45SPEAKER_06: Jalen Hutchings is a dude.
- 41:47SPEAKER_06: Uh Tony Bradford is a dude.
- 41:50SPEAKER_06: Like, we have some players on this defensive line, but if you know, uh the knock on wood, if Jalen Hutchings or Tony Bradford goes down, we don't have a lot of guys to back them up.
- 42:03SPEAKER_06: We have a lot of freshmen on this defensive line.
- 42:06SPEAKER_06: And now I'm not saying those guys can't be good potentially, but they're freshmen.
- 42:10SPEAKER_06: They're freaking 19 years old, you know.
- 42:13SPEAKER_06: Like I and so the depth of the defensive line concerns me.
- 42:18SPEAKER_06: We have a couple good, um, we have a couple good players uh in terms of like uh transfers.
- 42:26SPEAKER_06: We have a couple like Miles Coles coming in.
- 42:28SPEAKER_06: I think he's gonna be an impact.
- 42:29SPEAKER_06: Uh Vital Scott is gonna be an impact guy.
- 42:32SPEAKER_06: Uh Philip Liddy has been with the team now two, three years, and he's coming into his own.
- 42:37SPEAKER_06: Um, but overall, there's just not a lot of depth on this defensive line.
- 42:42SPEAKER_06: And so uh, you know, we we suffer a couple injuries on that on that position.
- 42:47SPEAKER_06: It's it's just gonna be tougher to replace uh on the D line than it would be, say, the quarterback or say the secondary or say the wide receivers.
- 42:55SPEAKER_06: You know, we have guys to back them up and potentially take a bigger role.
- 42:58SPEAKER_06: I am much more worried uh about the defensive line than I am any other position depth-wise.
- 43:04SPEAKER_08: Is this a uh a default take for a Texas Tech team?
- 43:08SPEAKER_08: Uh maybe.
- 43:09SPEAKER_08: It just might be no, you know what?
- 43:10SPEAKER_08: No, the the most default take would be DBs.
- 43:13SPEAKER_08: But we actually feel pretty good about the DBs.
- 43:16SPEAKER_08: I mean, the the the D-line is you know, usually not a very uh great unit at a Texas Tech team.
- 43:24SPEAKER_08: So I I mean, I feel you until proven otherwise, it's because I mean, how much do we hurry at at an opposing quarterback last season?
- 43:31SPEAKER_08: How often did that happen?
- 43:33SPEAKER_06: See, when we had Tyree rushing, which is which is something that's a little different because Tyree's technically an outside linebacker.
- 43:39SPEAKER_06: I Tyree's very scary.
- 43:42SPEAKER_06: He's a pass rusher, he is, he's gonna be on the line technically, you know, rushing the quarterback.
- 43:47SPEAKER_06: But uh, when you look on Texas Tech's roster online, the he's not listed as a defensive lineman.
- 43:52SPEAKER_06: That's why I'm saying this.
- 43:53SPEAKER_08: Like, okay, we're gonna have the scariest human being on our defense.
- 43:57SPEAKER_06: No, yes, and we're gonna have our outside linebackers coming.
- 44:00SPEAKER_06: Rushing in Josiah Pierre is going to be a guy that's going to be awesome this year in my eyes.
- 44:03SPEAKER_06: Tyree Wilson, of course, is going to be lining up on the line and going to rush the quarterback and try to end his life.
- 44:09SPEAKER_06: You know, it's gonna happen.
- 44:11SPEAKER_06: We have some dudes on this team, but I'm saying, you know, the nose tackles, the big boys underneath that really do some of the grinding against the offensive line every possession that don't get the credit they deserve is a little thin right now when you look at the entire roster.
- 44:27SPEAKER_08: No, I'm with you.
- 44:28SPEAKER_08: It's it's again, it's one of those units where it's tough to look at at TechSteck until proven otherwise.
- 44:33SPEAKER_06: Yep.
- 44:34SPEAKER_06: No, absolutely.
- 44:35SPEAKER_06: So uh that was my pessimism.
- 44:36SPEAKER_06: Did you manage to come up with another one?
- 44:38SPEAKER_06: If not, it's cool.
- 44:38SPEAKER_08: We could just no, no, I I did, I did.
- 44:41SPEAKER_08: Okay, go ahead.
- 44:42SPEAKER_08: My my pessimism is kind of connected to what we're gonna talk about next with the schedule.
- 44:45SPEAKER_08: It's I know we already talked about the schedule, but mine is it's I don't think we're gonna do that great this year, and I don't want that to be a reflection on what's to come.
- 44:54SPEAKER_08: I think that this schedule is going to kick our ass, and I think we're gonna lose a lot of games.
- 44:59SPEAKER_08: What I'm scared of is people giving up on this team whenever they only win six games, which I'm predicting in the end season.
- 45:07SPEAKER_08: Um, so I I what I'm what I'm just begging for is people to but keep that buy-in mentality they got now.
- 45:13SPEAKER_08: They're on the honeymoon phase of we're gonna win every single game.
- 45:16SPEAKER_08: And God, I would hope we do.
- 45:17SPEAKER_08: It'd be amazing, obviously, but I don't think it's gonna happen.
- 45:21SPEAKER_08: And I just really believe in this new coaching staff that I want us to hang on to what we got and see where it goes.
- 45:28SPEAKER_08: So my pessimism is just flat out, we're not gonna win many games, but I really hope that we hang on to what we got here.
- 45:36SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I uh that's not a bad that's not a bad take.
- 45:41SPEAKER_06: Obviously, I think you're with a lot of national media and and even a lot of Texas Tech, you know, fans on this.
- 45:48SPEAKER_06: Uh, it's hard to keep such a passionate fan base uh level headed.
- 45:52SPEAKER_06: It really is.
- 45:53SPEAKER_06: Uh, it's hard to keep you and me level headed because we're extremely high after we win and we're extremely low after we lose with any sport.
- 45:59SPEAKER_06: You know, there were times at bath, we had an unbelievable basketball team last year.
- 46:03SPEAKER_06: We did.
- 46:04SPEAKER_06: There were moments where we were where we were just like, oh, this freaking sucks.
- 46:08SPEAKER_06: I can't believe we lost to Kansas.
- 46:10SPEAKER_06: I can't believe we lost to this game against Oklahoma to a team we should have beat.
- 46:14SPEAKER_06: And that's just the passion that we have.
- 46:17SPEAKER_06: Um, I listen, next offseason at this time, no matter how we finish last year, we're gonna be excited about the football team.
- 46:25SPEAKER_06: It's that's gonna happen.
- 46:26SPEAKER_06: And Joey does a great job of doing that.
- 46:28SPEAKER_06: Matt Wells did not.
- 46:29SPEAKER_06: And so instead of being, instead of being, you know, just like eh, about football season, we're going to get juiced and we're gonna get amped.
- 46:38SPEAKER_06: And yes, it may not happen in year one.
- 46:40SPEAKER_06: I think it may happen in year one.
- 46:44SPEAKER_06: Oh, but it does.
- 46:44SPEAKER_06: And I hope I think everybody hopes it does that listens to this podcast, but you know, it's it's definitely something to where if we start off with a really bad record, say we start off one and five, like some people are expecting us to do.
- 46:59SPEAKER_06: The fan base is a lot of a lot of fan base is gonna be out on us.
- 47:02SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 47:03SPEAKER_06: And I don't necessarily blame them.
- 47:06SPEAKER_06: You're looking at a one in five football team, but also we have to understand it's a process, and we keep saying this over and over again.
- 47:13SPEAKER_06: Um, but yeah, no, that's that's definitely uh something to be pessimistic about because if we do start slow, uh it's gonna be hard to keep getting fans to come to these games.
- 47:22SPEAKER_06: And we're gonna have you know a game against Baylor at at in Lubbock that could be empty if we start off really bad.
- 47:28SPEAKER_06: You know, we have a final game against Oklahoma that if we have a bad record or aren't gonna make a bowl game going into that last game, it's not gonna be a big crowd.
- 47:36SPEAKER_06: And that sucks, but it's kind of inevitable.
- 47:39unknown: Yeah.
- 47:39SPEAKER_06: Snow the beast.
- 47:40SPEAKER_06: It is, yeah.
- 47:41SPEAKER_08: And that's exactly you you nailed on the point I was gonna say.
- 47:44SPEAKER_08: So um, but you know, the summer's probably where we're most level-headed, you know, yeah, going into the season.
- 47:48SPEAKER_08: As soon as we beat Murray State and we're like, oh, national champions.
- 47:52SPEAKER_08: So oh, come on, Houston.
- 47:55SPEAKER_08: It would be it would be no fun if it wasn't that way with us.
- 47:58SPEAKER_08: So that's that's absolutely the ride of being a fan.
- 48:00SPEAKER_07: That's not the way to be a fan, man.
- 48:02SPEAKER_07: Like you get it, like we're fans, we've never denied that.
- 48:04SPEAKER_07: Like, we're biased, we're biased shit.
- 48:07SPEAKER_06: We love watching our team win, and we wanna we wanna go into the go into the year with an optimistic point of view.
- 48:13SPEAKER_06: So, yeah, these pessimisms are hard to come up with, but luckily we each have one more optimism left.
- 48:18SPEAKER_06: What you got for us?
- 48:20SPEAKER_08: All right, another non-tangible.
- 48:22SPEAKER_08: Um, I just kind of want to give some outside credit to the staff that's around the football team rather than just the football team.
- 48:29SPEAKER_08: These hype up videos are beyond fire.
- 48:34SPEAKER_08: This is surface of the sun, good dude.
- 48:37SPEAKER_08: I I cannot believe the content that's being put out by the the uh the Texas Tech University uh athletic department staff.
- 48:44SPEAKER_08: If you're listening to this, listen to us.
- 48:46SPEAKER_08: We're praising you big time.
- 48:48SPEAKER_08: We love you.
- 48:51SPEAKER_08: Um, really, no, seriously, I I love the content they're putting out.
- 48:58SPEAKER_08: I I love the embrace of the culture of Lubbock in West Texas.
- 49:03SPEAKER_08: I hate when teens try to act like there's something they're not.
- 49:08SPEAKER_08: We are not a big city school, we are not a quotation marks cool school.
- 49:13SPEAKER_08: We're not.
- 49:14SPEAKER_08: We are what we are.
- 49:15SPEAKER_08: We're a gritty, hardworking base that loves who we are.
- 49:20SPEAKER_08: We're West Texas, it's it's who we're Texan to the bone, it's who we are, and I love seeing the content team just embrace the shit out of that with the pump checks, the pictures of the planes, the huge thunderstorms that come around every once in a while, and other than that, it's bone dry.
- 49:37SPEAKER_08: It's just I love this so much, and it fires up the fan base.
- 49:42SPEAKER_08: I think it probably fires up the players, and bonus props to the boosters for never having more buy-in to the football program than I've ever seen since being a fan.
- 49:52SPEAKER_08: The new stadium renders, amazing.
- 49:55SPEAKER_08: It's gonna be timeless.
- 49:57SPEAKER_08: The Jones will look gorgeous for a hundred years.
- 50:00SPEAKER_08: I love it, and that's definitely my last optimism is giving credit to the staff around it with the videos, the content, and the boosters.
- 50:07SPEAKER_06: Yeah, the creative department, no doubt, is one of the best in the country.
- 50:11SPEAKER_06: And I'm not just saying that to suck up the Texas Tech.
- 50:14SPEAKER_06: It uh it truly is.
- 50:15SPEAKER_06: When you get a video that just hypes everybody up, and every and you get all the coaching staff to tweet out something, a little preview of it beforehand, and everybody gets hyped up.
- 50:25SPEAKER_06: We've seen some awesome stuff from this creative department, both football, basketball, baseball, whatever it is.
- 50:31SPEAKER_06: Um, all of Texas Tech does a great job with all that, and that's definitely something that that matters.
- 50:36SPEAKER_06: You know, social media matters.
- 50:38SPEAKER_06: Getting the fans involved is what Joey's done such a good job of, and that's what Cliff did not do well.
- 50:45SPEAKER_06: That's what Matt Wells did not do well, and yeah, it's not the whole job, is social media, but you definitely have to realize that social media brings in a sort of fire that you are not getting from the fan base otherwise, unless you win games.
- 51:01SPEAKER_06: You know what I'm saying?
- 51:02SPEAKER_06: So Joey, and I think that was part of his plan coming in was hey, let's juice up this fan base, let's talk about the brand, let's put some stuff on ESPN Plus about fall camp and spring and spring camp.
- 51:15SPEAKER_06: And uh, you know, just get this fan base juiced up again because that's what foot Texas Tech football needs a rejuvenation, yeah.
- 51:22SPEAKER_06: And I think we're getting that right now.
- 51:24SPEAKER_06: So that's definitely that's a good optimism uh that you just put forward.
- 51:28SPEAKER_06: I actually have two more.
- 51:29SPEAKER_06: Uh, I'll just be quick on them because I don't want to take up all this time.
- 51:32SPEAKER_06: Uh, first one is about the Big 12.
- 51:35SPEAKER_06: It's wide open, it's wide open this year.
- 51:37SPEAKER_06: Oklahoma is not gonna be Oklahoma, you know what I'm saying?
- 51:41SPEAKER_06: Like, I think Brent Venivals was a good hire, obviously.
- 51:45SPEAKER_06: He's one of the best coordinators of in college football these last several seasons at Clemson.
- 51:50SPEAKER_06: I think he's gonna have Oklahoma in a decent spot, but he's not Lincoln Riley, yeah, in my eyes.
- 51:55SPEAKER_06: You know, Texas has not proven it, they haven't, they haven't proven it.
- 52:00SPEAKER_06: Kansas State is getting all the hype in the world, but they haven't proven it.
- 52:03SPEAKER_06: Yes, really.
- 52:04SPEAKER_06: You know, Baylor has, but Baylor lost a ton from last year.
- 52:08SPEAKER_06: Oklahoma State had a great season last year.
- 52:11SPEAKER_06: They lost their star defensive coordinator, you know.
- 52:15SPEAKER_06: The Big 12 is open.
- 52:17SPEAKER_06: And if you in your first year at Texas Tech, you have an absolute opportunity here to potentially blow people's minds and really just break open and be uh a really good team this season.
- 52:30SPEAKER_06: So I'm optimistic about the Big 12 as a whole, in terms of when you're looking at it from Texas Tech's point of view and this season.
- 52:38SPEAKER_06: Yes, we keep telling you don't you know understand if we don't have a good season, but also there's a lot of opportunity to have a good season, and so that's that's just what I have to say about that.
- 52:49SPEAKER_08: Look, I'm a I'm a I'm a I'm a qualified sports commenter commenter on an averagely popular podcast, okay?
- 53:03SPEAKER_08: That's very kind of you to say that was that was that was really me puffing my chest.
- 53:09SPEAKER_08: We're very average at best at anything.
- 53:13SPEAKER_08: At best.
- 53:15SPEAKER_08: So what I have to say matters about this.
- 53:18SPEAKER_08: No, I I I'm with you, man.
- 53:19SPEAKER_08: Um uh I I I actually we're not the only ones that are excited about it either.
- 53:24SPEAKER_08: Um, there's some national media members that are actually excited about TechStech.
- 53:27SPEAKER_08: Like one of the big ones from CBS, Tom Fernelli, were his like Dark Horse surprise Big 12 team.
- 53:32SPEAKER_08: And I haven't seen that since Cliff Kingsbury, like golden age.
- 53:37SPEAKER_08: So we actually have a lot going on there, man.
- 53:40SPEAKER_08: And I'm really excited about that.
- 53:42SPEAKER_08: Um, and with with the whole like uh Brent Venivals versus Lincoln Riley thing, I'm with you.
- 53:51SPEAKER_08: I think Lincoln Riley is one of the best modern young coaches to be out there in college football.
- 53:58SPEAKER_08: But is that well, let's think about it this way.
- 54:02SPEAKER_08: Do you think Sooners would look at us and say it's the same thing as Chris Beard versus Mark Adams?
- 54:07SPEAKER_08: Okay, not quite the same since Mark Adams was been with our program, yeah.
- 54:11SPEAKER_08: But do you think it's kind of similar in the way they see it?
- 54:15SPEAKER_06: Look, a lot of coaches are gonna succeed at Oklahoma because they have their easy to do that.
- 54:22SPEAKER_06: I granted, but they also lost a ton.
- 54:25SPEAKER_06: They lost like their three leading pass rushers, they lost their two quarterbacks, they lost their two leading rushers, they lost four of their five receivers.
- 54:34SPEAKER_06: So it's personnel, too, man.
- 54:36SPEAKER_06: Like obviously, they brought in talented people to you know replace that, and Oklahoma can do that.
- 54:44SPEAKER_06: I'm not gonna say Oklahoma's gonna be terrible, but I'm also saying that Oklahoma is not gonna be that automatic loss that has been on your schedule, you know, since Bob stoops, you know.
- 54:56SPEAKER_06: So I that's all I have to say about Venables, and and we can get to Oklahoma a little further when we're gonna be able to get it.
- 55:01SPEAKER_06: Yeah, you're right.
- 55:02SPEAKER_08: I probably have people, I probably have people yelling at their car speakers on their commute here.
- 55:06SPEAKER_08: Um it's the Lincoln Riley to prevent Venables is not at all comparable.
- 55:10SPEAKER_08: I mean, it's we could break down, we could break it down point to point.
- 55:14SPEAKER_08: Yeah, uh, Lincoln Riley did not go to Oklahoma State or UT.
- 55:17SPEAKER_08: So that's a big difference.
- 55:19SPEAKER_06: Yeah, no, absolutely.
- 55:20SPEAKER_06: I mean, he yeah, absolutely.
- 55:22SPEAKER_06: So we'll talk about we'll talk about Oklahoma here in a second.
- 55:25SPEAKER_06: Uh, I just have one more optimism, give you a little extra.
- 55:28SPEAKER_06: Uh, obviously the defensive back it has to the defensive back depth has to be talked about.
- 55:34SPEAKER_06: You're right, you're right.
- 55:35SPEAKER_06: Because even if we have a situation like Muddy Waters, where he goes out on the fourth game of the season and is out for the rest of the year, we have a guy to back him up.
- 55:45SPEAKER_06: We have this is our deepest defensive back unit.
- 55:49SPEAKER_06: This is the first time I am just so in on all of the safeties and corners that we have on this team.
- 55:57SPEAKER_06: There's so many of them.
- 55:58SPEAKER_06: You can put them, and they're versatile.
- 56:00SPEAKER_06: You could put them at safety, you can put them as a as a potential pass rusher, you could put them uh in you know, in coverage.
- 56:07SPEAKER_06: I I mean, I I believe in all of these guys.
- 56:10SPEAKER_06: Muddy, uh, you know, Ray Shad Williams, Reggie Pearson, Keon Blankenbaker, Malik Dunlap.
- 56:18SPEAKER_06: I mean, you can go down the line of dudes that I think can have, and I even mentioned Rabbit.
- 56:24SPEAKER_06: I mean, just dudes that are are so versatile in the backfield.
- 56:29SPEAKER_06: And we didn't have a very good passing defense last year, but with the experience and the talent that we do have, and it seems like they're all coming together really well under uh DeRuder and Marcel Yates.
- 56:42SPEAKER_06: So I'm just really excited for this secondary unit and and the depth of it.
- 56:46SPEAKER_06: I think it's it's gonna be a real asset for us, dude.
- 56:50SPEAKER_08: Uh absolutely, I I can't remember the last time.
- 56:53SPEAKER_08: We probably have never been pumped up about the DB unit.
- 56:56SPEAKER_08: Have we ever been pumped up about the DB unit on the Tex Tech Talk to Tech Podcast here?
- 57:00SPEAKER_08: No, no, no, no, not one time.
- 57:05SPEAKER_06: I can guarantee you I have never been hyped up about the defensive back unit as since I've been a fan.
- 57:11SPEAKER_08: The the funniest moments ever in the Jones is you complaining about the DB unit whenever we're getting blown out as usual in our college tenure.
- 57:18SPEAKER_06: You know, I apologize to Desmus family for what I've said, for what I've said, uh in a drunken rage after we've given up our ninth touchdown of the game.
- 57:31SPEAKER_08: Uh but no, man, I'm totally with you.
- 57:37SPEAKER_08: I remember when we're talking about the uh the defensive line unit about 30 minutes ago, that uh saying that you obviously the defensive line unit's something easy to go after, but usually the DB units a little usually yeah, a little easier to go after as well.
- 57:50SPEAKER_08: So it's this is actually you know, I'm very excited about.
- 57:53SPEAKER_08: I think this is a difference maker.
- 57:54SPEAKER_08: Whenever we're talking about like, are we gonna have a good season or not?
- 57:57SPEAKER_08: Is this unit right here?
- 57:58SPEAKER_08: If these guys show the F up, I think we can actually get excited about things.
- 58:03SPEAKER_08: So yeah, I I I apologize if I'm starting to uh jumble some words.
- 58:06SPEAKER_08: I'm trying each and every sonic hard seltzer since their new loud and proud hard seltzer of the Big 12, baby.
- 58:14SPEAKER_08: What's the best?
- 58:15SPEAKER_06: What's the best Sonic hard seltzer you've tried so far?
- 58:17SPEAKER_08: Honestly, I think the classic Limeade, the original Lime's favorite.
- 58:21SPEAKER_08: I know it's kind of boring sounding, but it's been like the most like I don't feel like I'm drinking just straight up artificial shit, but maybe I'm just getting a little uh but maybe you're just getting a little tipsy, who knows?
- 58:31SPEAKER_08: Redacted.
- 58:33SPEAKER_07: Redact that from the record, please.
- 58:36SPEAKER_07: I did not say that.
- 58:39SPEAKER_08: But Sonic is truly the perfect sponsor for the Big 12.
- 58:42SPEAKER_08: I mean, out of OKC, you know, this is perfect.
- 58:45SPEAKER_06: It's good, it's great.
- 58:46SPEAKER_06: Way to go, Sonic.
- 58:48SPEAKER_06: I'll have to give those a try.
- 58:49SPEAKER_06: I haven't seen those in the Mad D's.
- 58:51SPEAKER_06: Okay, right on.
- 58:52SPEAKER_06: Cool.
- 58:52SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I mean, I've had uh like a lot of people have liked them.
- 58:55SPEAKER_06: Yeah, you know, it's Sonic, it's like it's not gonna taste bad.
- 58:59SPEAKER_06: Yeah, exactly.
- 58:59SPEAKER_06: It might give you a killer hangover, but I don't know.
- 59:02SPEAKER_06: I guess we'll have to check in with you tomorrow.
- 59:04SPEAKER_08: Yeah, so that's to be continued.
- 59:07SPEAKER_08: Let's talk about the schedule.
- 59:09SPEAKER_06: Let's talk about the 2022 Texas Tech football schedule.
- 59:15SPEAKER_06: Now, we're not gonna keep you here forever, we're not gonna have another four-hour podcast like we just had.
- 59:20SPEAKER_06: We're getting there.
- 59:21SPEAKER_06: We're we're I we may get to two, who knows?
- 59:24SPEAKER_06: Um, but let's go, let's let's go break down the schedule, kind of go game by game, just kind of give our thoughts, initial thoughts on you know what we think is gonna happen.
- 59:32SPEAKER_06: Let's start with Murray State, uh, first game of the year.
- 59:36SPEAKER_06: Unfortunately, we're not gonna watch it because you're selfishly getting married on the same day.
- 59:40SPEAKER_06: Uh, I'll never forgive you for it.
- 59:42SPEAKER_08: You're ruining me here.
- 59:44SPEAKER_06: 2021, Murray State, six and five season three and three in conference.
- 59:50SPEAKER_06: Um, I I just need to I need to highlight this.
- 59:53SPEAKER_06: Uh, Texas Tech's last two FCS opponents, um, 35-33 win over Houston Baptist, uh, 28-22 win over Stephen F.
- 1:00:04SPEAKER_06: Austin.
- 1:00:05SPEAKER_06: Um, we have not shown up for our FCS games.
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_06: We have not killed them uh like we need to.
- 1:00:12SPEAKER_06: And you know, this this isn't a good team.
- 1:00:16SPEAKER_06: This isn't a team that should give us trouble, but uh to go into this game with that mentality is also not a good idea because it seems like we've gone into these last two FCS games with that mentality.
- 1:00:30SPEAKER_06: So uh yeah, we need to we need to just show up and and be what we are.
- 1:00:36SPEAKER_08: I think we're in a bit of a Matt Wells trauma because I've never seen a struggle so much against FCS teams since no, I really can't recall us being that bad in even the Kingsbury era.
- 1:00:49SPEAKER_08: Yeah, uh in the Kingsbury era, we eventually be like, finally, we it's it's done.
- 1:00:53SPEAKER_08: But like with the in the Wells era, it was shit, man.
- 1:00:57SPEAKER_08: This is gonna go to the end.
- 1:00:58SPEAKER_08: So it's yeah, I'm with you, man, but I I really don't think that's gonna be a problem because I mean you just said three and three in conference from this FCS team.
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_08: Um, that shouldn't equal an issue for us, but I don't think I don't think Houston Baptist had a good year either.
- 1:01:15SPEAKER_06: I don't think Stephen F.
- 1:01:16SPEAKER_06: Austin had a particularly awesome year either.
- 1:01:18SPEAKER_08: It's it's different when you're talking about a team like Sam Houston State, you know, or Eastern Washington, who are solid FCS programs, but these guys they shouldn't give you an issue, it should be an easy W.
- 1:01:31SPEAKER_08: And I'm ready to get us back to where it's just the reason why I plan my wedding on this is one, because it's Labor Day weekend.
- 1:01:39SPEAKER_06: Because you're not very smart.
- 1:01:40SPEAKER_06: That's the first one.
- 1:01:42SPEAKER_08: Yes, that's it's and two, it's Labor Day weekend, and it it's and three, it's an FTS team.
- 1:01:49SPEAKER_08: We better blow them out.
- 1:01:50SPEAKER_08: Don't worry.
- 1:01:51SPEAKER_08: I already told the DJ that we're calling out scores every once in a while.
- 1:01:55SPEAKER_08: So he's gonna give us the final at the end.
- 1:01:57SPEAKER_08: So I hope to hear 50.
- 1:01:59SPEAKER_08: I hope to hear 56 to 7 Texas Tech.
- 1:02:02SPEAKER_08: If if we lose, it's my fault.
- 1:02:04SPEAKER_08: It's your fault.
- 1:02:05SPEAKER_08: I told the DJ that this is a game that should be like 66 to 14 at the end.
- 1:02:10SPEAKER_08: Yeah, so yeah, no, I mean I but we lose, it's my fault, y'all.
- 1:02:14SPEAKER_06: Listen, I put probabilities, uh, Texas Tech win probability has to be at like 95% for this game.
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_06: I I know we've done crappy against the last two, um, but this is the first game of the Julia Maguire era, and I think we have a really uh a talented team.
- 1:02:29SPEAKER_06: So yeah, 95% possibility.
- 1:02:31SPEAKER_06: I'm sure you probably agree with that.
- 1:02:33SPEAKER_06: Yes.
- 1:02:34SPEAKER_06: All right, let's go to Houston at home in Lubbock.
- 1:02:38SPEAKER_06: Houston last season went 12-2, 8-0 in conference uh until the conference championship game, where they lost to Cincinnati.
- 1:02:45SPEAKER_06: Uh, only losses were two Cincinnati and your Red Raiders.
- 1:02:50SPEAKER_06: Uh, they beat Auburn in the Birmingham Bowl.
- 1:02:52SPEAKER_06: That was significant.
- 1:02:53SPEAKER_06: Solid dope.
- 1:02:54SPEAKER_06: Um, they return a lot.
- 1:02:55SPEAKER_06: Like we mentioned, Clayton Toon returning at quarterback, uh, had a really good season last year, 30 TDs to 10 interceptions, uh, uh a little over 3,500 yards, 62% completion percentage.
- 1:03:07SPEAKER_06: Tank Dell is a freaking animal at receiver and a return man.
- 1:03:11SPEAKER_06: Uh, dude's awesome.
- 1:03:13SPEAKER_06: Uh, also, if you recognize this name, Keyshawn Carter, uh, former Red Raider, is going to be a big piece, uh, returning at the receiving core.
- 1:03:21SPEAKER_06: Christian Trahan at the tight end position, very reliable.
- 1:03:25SPEAKER_06: Um, the thing that concerns should concern Houston fans, um, Alton McCaskill, who was going to be their leading or who was their leading rusher last season, tore his ACL in April.
- 1:03:36SPEAKER_06: He's not going to be here for this game at least, probably the whole season.
- 1:03:39SPEAKER_06: So, another former Red Raider, our guy, Tizon Henry, is probably going to be uh pretty active in the backfield for Texas or for Houston against Texas Tech.
- 1:03:50SPEAKER_06: So uh just keep an eye out for our boy Tizan.
- 1:03:54SPEAKER_06: Uh, I know he's kind of been uh I talked a lot of mess last season at the game to to our guy Tizon Henry in the Houston game.
- 1:04:02SPEAKER_06: But um uh I mean the fact is that they're gonna have a really good returning defense and a really solid returning offense.
- 1:04:09SPEAKER_06: And they're the preseason ranked number 24 team in the country.
- 1:04:12SPEAKER_06: Um, it's in Lubbock.
- 1:04:14SPEAKER_06: We have had Houston's number uh for some reason, the last four games.
- 1:04:18SPEAKER_06: Yeah, the last I mean, at least the last four games, we've won every single one.
- 1:04:22SPEAKER_06: Um, I'm putting Texas Tech's win probability at 55%.
- 1:04:27SPEAKER_06: Do you agree?
- 1:04:29SPEAKER_08: Agreed.
- 1:04:30SPEAKER_08: You know, anything you said at the last Houston game can be redacted.
- 1:04:33SPEAKER_08: Uh, you and I uh enjoyed a mini sodas with the rambling raiders that game.
- 1:04:38SPEAKER_06: So I spent a lot of money, dude.
- 1:04:40SPEAKER_06: I looked at my bank account and I was not pleased.
- 1:04:43SPEAKER_08: That's very stupid of you to look at your bank account after someone.
- 1:04:45SPEAKER_08: Well, you kind of have to do that.
- 1:04:47SPEAKER_08: We're adults, we're adults, look to do this.
- 1:04:49SPEAKER_08: Some weekend, someone like sunk costs to move on with my life, and I don't even want to see what the hell I did to myself.
- 1:04:55SPEAKER_08: So, but no, dude, this this I have a set of six wins, and this one's a win for me.
- 1:05:02SPEAKER_08: This is an upset for me here in Lubbock, Texas.
- 1:05:04SPEAKER_08: I think being in Lubbock's a big part of it.
- 1:05:06SPEAKER_08: Um we shouldn't have beat them last year, they were a better team last year.
- 1:05:09SPEAKER_08: We somehow pulled it off.
- 1:05:10SPEAKER_08: I think they'll be a better team this year, but I think that we'll catch them early.
- 1:05:13SPEAKER_08: I think we got them at home, and I think we're gonna pull up this pull off this upset.
- 1:05:17SPEAKER_08: We've had their number, and while that seems like it's a uh a uh a pattern, that's not really how it works.
- 1:05:26SPEAKER_08: But I do think that we do get this game.
- 1:05:29SPEAKER_08: Uh, and I'm sure Houston fans are saying the same exact thing about us.
- 1:05:32SPEAKER_08: I think they're saying that I don't think anything anymore are saying it's an automatic win, but it's it this is uh like I'm going 60 percent.
- 1:05:41SPEAKER_08: That would be crazy if they are bigger than the case.
- 1:05:43SPEAKER_08: No, I think there is some because it's a first case.
- 1:05:46SPEAKER_06: Yeah, it's first year new head coach.
- 1:05:48SPEAKER_06: Uh, you know, I think Houston fans think very highly of themselves.
- 1:05:52SPEAKER_06: You know what I hate?
- 1:05:52SPEAKER_06: Um what's that?
- 1:05:54SPEAKER_08: Before before you I'm sorry to cut you off on your sense there.
- 1:05:56SPEAKER_08: No, go ahead.
- 1:05:57SPEAKER_08: I kind of love Dana Holgerson.
- 1:05:59SPEAKER_06: I okay.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_06: You've been on a data high.
- 1:06:01SPEAKER_06: I'm on a data dude.
- 1:06:03SPEAKER_08: The guy's kind of a legend.
- 1:06:04SPEAKER_06: You're all about Captain Red Bull over there.
- 1:06:07SPEAKER_08: I am, man.
- 1:06:07SPEAKER_08: The guy's kind of, I'm not saying I wish he was our coach, but the guy is kind of a dude.
- 1:06:12SPEAKER_06: All right.
- 1:06:12SPEAKER_06: All right.
- 1:06:13SPEAKER_06: He's cool for being the Houston coach.
- 1:06:15SPEAKER_06: I'll agree with you there.
- 1:06:16SPEAKER_08: Our future Big 12 rival.
- 1:06:18SPEAKER_06: Yeah, really.
- 1:06:19SPEAKER_06: I think I'm not even sure.
- 1:06:21SPEAKER_06: No, yeah, I think they will be.
- 1:06:22SPEAKER_06: But no, I agree with you.
- 1:06:24SPEAKER_06: I think this is going to be a win for the Red Raiders.
- 1:06:26SPEAKER_06: And yes, a lot of people, it's it's 50-50.
- 1:06:29SPEAKER_06: But I I we've had their number.
- 1:06:30SPEAKER_06: Uh until you if if Matt Wells beat you and Cliff Kingsbury beat you, you know, I think uh I think Joey McGuire can beat you.
- 1:06:38SPEAKER_06: But uh this is a this is a very talented tech or uh very well, hopefully a very talented Texas tech team, but uh a very talented Houston team, regardless.
- 1:06:47SPEAKER_06: So this is gonna be a close game, but I think uh we squeeze it out.
- 1:06:50SPEAKER_06: Moving on, NC State in Raleigh.
- 1:06:54SPEAKER_08: Uh did you say we're gonna win?
- 1:06:56SPEAKER_08: Oh, yeah, you said you were gonna win Houston.
- 1:06:57SPEAKER_06: I said we're gonna we're gonna start two and oh.
- 1:06:59SPEAKER_06: We're gonna start two and oh.
- 1:07:00SPEAKER_06: We both got that right now.
- 1:07:02SPEAKER_06: Uh third game of the year uh in Raleigh at NC State.
- 1:07:06SPEAKER_06: Um last season went nine and three, six and two in conference.
- 1:07:10SPEAKER_06: Uh spent the entire season basically in and out of the AP top 25, but ultimately finished uh number 20 in the AP poll.
- 1:07:18SPEAKER_06: So they were the um they were good.
- 1:07:20SPEAKER_06: They're good last year.
- 1:07:21SPEAKER_06: Um Devin Leary returns as at quarterback.
- 1:07:24SPEAKER_06: Um, he's thought to potentially be a first-round draft pick in next year's NFL draft.
- 1:07:29SPEAKER_06: Um, they lose their top receiver, they lose their two top rushers and their star tackle, but uh their defense is absolutely loaded.
- 1:07:38SPEAKER_06: Um, they're gonna rush the quarterback, which is uh a thing that this is gonna be our first insane test for the offensive line.
- 1:07:46SPEAKER_06: And now Houston's tough in their own right, but NC State's a whole nother animal when it comes to their defensive line.
- 1:07:51SPEAKER_06: Um, and it's gonna be Joey's first road game.
- 1:07:54SPEAKER_06: Uh, you know, it's it's always tough to go on the road, no matter what coach you are, no matter where you are.
- 1:08:00SPEAKER_06: Um, but you know, I just I don't have a lot of confidence in this one.
- 1:08:04SPEAKER_06: I'm gonna be honest with you.
- 1:08:05SPEAKER_06: I have uh I have the Texas Tech win probability at 35%.
- 1:08:09SPEAKER_08: Man, I'm with you.
- 1:08:11SPEAKER_08: This is I think this is the first easy L to pin in, in the sense that if you're if you're a betting man, you're petting the L.
- 1:08:18SPEAKER_08: Uh if we win this game, holy crap, are we in for a season?
- 1:08:22SPEAKER_08: I think if we win this game, I mean, I you could probably even you can make the same argument for Houston, I think.
- 1:08:27SPEAKER_08: But this one, even more so.
- 1:08:30SPEAKER_08: You're you're in the song that wagon wheels about, and here you are going crazy in a not even a chuckle.
- 1:08:37SPEAKER_08: All right, anyway.
- 1:08:38SPEAKER_07: Um what do you want for Faith?
- 1:08:44SPEAKER_08: No, no, uh, NC State has a lot of hype behind them.
- 1:08:47SPEAKER_08: They're one of the favorites of the ACC to win it and therefore make the playoff.
- 1:08:52SPEAKER_08: So this is a statement game if you pull it off, but it's not a deal breaker for you lose.
- 1:08:56SPEAKER_08: I really think we're gonna lose this game.
- 1:08:58SPEAKER_08: We're gonna be in a hostile environment.
- 1:08:59SPEAKER_08: That place will be packed.
- 1:09:00SPEAKER_08: I mean, you're a top 15 team, obviously gonna have a home field advantage.
- 1:09:03SPEAKER_08: So it's nothing against Joey's experience if we don't get to pull this off, but it's it's gonna be a tough sled, man.
- 1:09:10SPEAKER_06: Yeah, no, I don't think anybody's expecting us to win this game, and I don't think anybody really should.
- 1:09:14SPEAKER_06: So um NC State's super talented, and they have a quarterback who's potentially gonna go in the first round this year.
- 1:09:21SPEAKER_06: So uh, you know, there's there's no shame in losing this game.
- 1:09:25SPEAKER_06: Um, it's really just kind of icing on the cake if you happen to you know get a victory here.
- 1:09:30SPEAKER_06: But first Big 12 team, first Big 12 test for Joey McGuire.
- 1:09:37SPEAKER_06: Texas, the Longhorns, uh in Lubbock.
- 1:09:42SPEAKER_06: Thank goodness.
- 1:09:43SPEAKER_06: Um, well, I don't know if that is really a thank goodness, uh, but it should be a thank goodness.
- 1:09:49SPEAKER_06: Uh, this game, no matter, I think no matter how the non-con goes, even if we're one and two, I still think fans are gonna show out for this one.
- 1:09:57SPEAKER_06: For sure.
- 1:09:57SPEAKER_06: Um, so you know, you have a home field advantage.
- 1:10:00SPEAKER_06: Uh, we all know what Texas did last year, five and seven, uh, lost to Kansas, six game losing streak.
- 1:10:06SPEAKER_06: They sucked, and uh, we still lost to them.
- 1:10:10SPEAKER_06: So, you know, it whether Texas, you can't really you look at the Texas-Texas tech game, it's almost different from you know how both teams ended up because despite all the BS, and even if we're clearly the better team, we've still somehow found a way to lose to Texas.
- 1:10:27SPEAKER_06: And uh, in my opinion, we've been we've been the better team the last two years, and we've still lost to them.
- 1:10:33SPEAKER_06: So uh, you know, blame it on Matt Wells, blame it on whoever.
- 1:10:36SPEAKER_06: But uh, you know, we Texas has kind of this thing on us.
- 1:10:40SPEAKER_06: Um, but what we do know about Texas is that they have a dynamic offense, they had a dynamic offense last year.
- 1:10:47SPEAKER_06: They led the Big 12 in points per game.
- 1:10:49SPEAKER_06: Um, you know, Quinn Ewers is a guy that is unknown, in my opinion.
- 1:10:54SPEAKER_06: He's obviously very talented.
- 1:10:58SPEAKER_06: He almost went to tech, he should have gone to tech.
- 1:11:01SPEAKER_06: Uh, we all know this, but imagine Quinn Ewers in this freaking quarterback room with Baron Morton and Donovan Smith and Tyler Shuck.
- 1:11:08SPEAKER_06: This would have been nuts.
- 1:11:09SPEAKER_06: Um, but no, Quinn Ewers officially named the starter, much to Steve Sarkeesian's dismay.
- 1:11:15SPEAKER_08: Uh I love talking about UT football.
- 1:11:21SPEAKER_06: Um, Bijan Robinson.
- 1:11:23SPEAKER_06: What uh there's no denial, he's one of the best running backs in in the Big 12 in college football.
- 1:11:29SPEAKER_06: Um, he's awesome.
- 1:11:30SPEAKER_06: Uh Xavier Worthy, one of the best young wide receivers in the game.
- 1:11:34SPEAKER_06: Um, but their defense was bad last year, and I I don't know where they improved, to be quite honest with you.
- 1:11:41SPEAKER_06: Uh, I look at all their defense, I look at their D line, I look at their linebackers, their secondary.
- 1:11:46SPEAKER_06: Uh, nothing is like stands out to me as they really looked at that position and tried to improve it.
- 1:11:53SPEAKER_06: Um, and so that's why, in my eyes, Texas Tech is gonna win this game.
- 1:12:01SPEAKER_06: Wow.
- 1:12:02SPEAKER_06: I'm saying it right now.
- 1:12:04SPEAKER_06: Yes, this is the Talking Tech podcast with very biased uh hosts on it.
- 1:12:10SPEAKER_06: We're gonna beat Texas this year.
- 1:12:12SPEAKER_06: Uh, it's gonna happen.
- 1:12:13SPEAKER_06: Um, we are gonna start off the season three and one, in my opinion.
- 1:12:21SPEAKER_08: Here we are.
- 1:12:23SPEAKER_08: Game four, met with Texas Tech's arch rival, UT.
- 1:12:28SPEAKER_08: Coach Joey McGuire's most important game, easily the entire season.
- 1:12:32SPEAKER_08: It's really any Texas Tech head coach's most important game every season.
- 1:12:37SPEAKER_08: Um, I love that you think we're gonna win.
- 1:12:41SPEAKER_08: And I want to believe we're going to win.
- 1:12:46SPEAKER_08: Well, we have not won in Lubbock, Texas, against the UT Longhorns since the most famous game in Tex Tech history.
- 1:12:54SPEAKER_08: So it's really, really tough to say we're gonna get this.
- 1:12:59SPEAKER_08: And I feel more confident that we're gonna win this game if, say, uh Matt Wells or Cliff Kingsbury was at the helm because it's new.
- 1:13:08SPEAKER_08: We have we don't know what we're gonna expect with this coaching staff, and it's just I really hope this new coaching staff realizes what this means to the fan base to get this game, but I do think we're gonna lose this game.
- 1:13:20SPEAKER_08: It's just it's kind of how it's gone, man.
- 1:13:23SPEAKER_08: And as much as it pains me to say we're gonna lose this game.
- 1:13:27SPEAKER_08: Um obviously, look, listen, no, you listen first.
- 1:13:30SPEAKER_08: Okay, you listen first.
- 1:13:31SPEAKER_08: Hey, no, no, no, no.
- 1:13:33SPEAKER_07: Okay, go ahead.
- 1:13:34SPEAKER_08: Comes come week of UT.
- 1:13:36SPEAKER_08: Obviously, I'm gonna say we're gonna kick their ass.
- 1:13:39SPEAKER_08: But right now, an off-season Tristan is gonna say we're losing this game.
- 1:13:44SPEAKER_06: Yeah, there you're right in this scenario, you know.
- 1:13:49SPEAKER_06: You have more times than not are right when it comes to the UT game.
- 1:13:54SPEAKER_06: Um, I don't have really anything, uh I don't have anything uh that's gonna convince people um because we have been so bad against the Texas Longhorns.
- 1:14:06SPEAKER_08: Um, but for unspeakable reasons, like what did come out for scene reasons.
- 1:14:11SPEAKER_06: What did come out this this media day um that I thought was interesting, um somebody, I think it was Rob Brough, interviewed um at Media Day.
- 1:14:21SPEAKER_06: He interviewed Reggie Pearson, and basically Reggie kind of highlighted the difference between last year and this year in terms of the mentality of the team.
- 1:14:32SPEAKER_06: Um last year Reggie admitted that yeah, we kind of were expecting to lose to UT and OU.
- 1:14:41SPEAKER_06: That was kind of the mentality.
- 1:14:42SPEAKER_06: Yeah, that was kind of the mentality of the whole team was that hey, we're probably gonna lose UT and OU, but hey, we have a chance in the others.
- 1:14:49SPEAKER_06: Um this year's different from everything they put out, from what Reggie said, from what everybody has said, to be honest with you.
- 1:14:58SPEAKER_06: These guys expect to be in the Big 12 championship.
- 1:15:01SPEAKER_06: Like they don't, they're not expecting to be a six or seven win team, they're expecting to be an unbelievable team and really good.
- 1:15:11SPEAKER_06: And that's the mentality you should have.
- 1:15:13SPEAKER_06: And that's why that's what we've been missing through all of Matt Wells, through all of Cliff's Cliff Kingsbury, there hasn't been a confidence in this team.
- 1:15:23SPEAKER_06: And I think there's a different type of confidence in this team.
- 1:15:26SPEAKER_06: And now, is that gonna be the same confidence if we lose a couple to Houston and NC State?
- 1:15:30SPEAKER_06: We'll have to see.
- 1:15:32SPEAKER_06: But if we go like I'm kind of thinking we're going, which is starting off two and one in the non-con, I think these guys are gonna have all the confidence in the world to go win one in Lubbock against the biggest rival in potentially the last game that UT plays in Lubbock in a long, long time.
- 1:15:47SPEAKER_08: Last time we played them for a long time.
- 1:15:49SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 1:15:50SPEAKER_06: So, you know, I think these guys are gonna get up, and I think it's gonna be a game where the fan base just is all in on Joey Maguire and on this team, and we start three and one with a win one and oh in conference against Texas.
- 1:16:04SPEAKER_08: This is my last response on UT since we're taking too long on it, which we probably should because obviously this is the game we all look forward to the most.
- 1:16:10SPEAKER_08: That's why we hate to admit it.
- 1:16:11SPEAKER_08: Um is what pisses me off about the UT game, and even you hearing you reiterate that our players expect that to be an L pisses me off so much because every Big 12 team beats UT except for us.
- 1:16:32SPEAKER_08: Yeah, for some freaking reason, we refuse to beat them even when we're ahead, like two years ago, even while we have the better team, like last year, Kansas will beat them in their own house, but we'll lose.
- 1:16:48SPEAKER_08: We'll they'll put 70 on us.
- 1:16:50SPEAKER_08: Yeah, it just you can see why Texas Tech fans are so fed up with our football program, and this is a keystone reason why is our performance against UT, the game we care the most about, and seeing our hearing our players give up about it before it even starts, just makes your blood boil because this is a game fans will show up no matter the record it is.
- 1:17:10SPEAKER_08: So it's just we better get out there and show it.
- 1:17:13SPEAKER_08: And I want to be proven wrong that we're not gonna lose this freaking game because we've been the better team for the past decade.
- 1:17:20SPEAKER_08: So it's just unbelievable that we kept we keep dropping it like we are.
- 1:17:23SPEAKER_08: And I don't think this will be the last UT game we play.
- 1:17:26SPEAKER_08: I think they'll be here for a little while longer unless Pac-12 teams join us.
- 1:17:29SPEAKER_08: But god damn, now it's time to to to freaking win, dude.
- 1:17:33SPEAKER_08: Yeah, like I want to be I want our last meeting to be hey, how'd the last game go?
- 1:17:38SPEAKER_08: Anytime they ever talk shit to us.
- 1:17:39SPEAKER_08: So I want that to be the case so bad.
- 1:17:42SPEAKER_06: No doubt, no doubt.
- 1:17:43SPEAKER_06: And I mean, we've managed to fix that and all the other sports, just gotta get football over the hump here because basketball's managed to find a way and baseball's managed to find a way.
- 1:17:52SPEAKER_06: So let's get football there.
- 1:17:54SPEAKER_06: UT's not this freaking Titan, you know.
- 1:17:57SPEAKER_06: We just for some reason cannot get past them.
- 1:17:59SPEAKER_06: Um, moving on at Kansas State.
- 1:18:02SPEAKER_06: This is a tough one.
- 1:18:03SPEAKER_06: Um, this is a really this is gonna be a tough game.
- 1:18:05SPEAKER_06: Kansas State.
- 1:18:06SPEAKER_06: It is.
- 1:18:07SPEAKER_06: Uh, and while I do think they're getting a little more hype than what they should, uh, everybody seems to be on the K-State bandwagon these days.
- 1:18:15SPEAKER_06: Um, and I don't know whether that's Deuce Vaughn or whether that's uh the coach or anything like that.
- 1:18:21SPEAKER_06: Kansas State, um, they're gonna have a good defense, they have a lot of pieces on this defense.
- 1:18:26SPEAKER_06: Um, they have a guy in Felix, Anu De K Ozuma, who's like a preseason Big 12 all defensive type player.
- 1:18:38SPEAKER_06: Um, Adrian Martinez coming in from Nebraska as their quarterback.
- 1:18:43SPEAKER_06: Uh, they were eight and five last year.
- 1:18:45SPEAKER_06: We're going to Manhattan.
- 1:18:46SPEAKER_06: Look, I don't expect to win this game, but I do think it's going to be a little closer than what people think.
- 1:18:52SPEAKER_06: Um, I am gonna predict a loss here, and for us to be now three and two after this game, but I think the win probability is probably about 40 for Texas Tech.
- 1:19:05SPEAKER_08: I I like that, man.
- 1:19:06SPEAKER_08: I I predict an L as well.
- 1:19:08SPEAKER_08: Um, because kind of much like UT, Kansas State has had our number, man.
- 1:19:13SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 1:19:13SPEAKER_08: Um, not once did we beat them when we were students, and it's been a while since we've beaten them since.
- 1:19:20SPEAKER_08: Um they got a lot of hype around them.
- 1:19:23SPEAKER_08: I don't believe in it.
- 1:19:23SPEAKER_08: I don't think they're gonna win the Big 12, but Kansas State's one of those things that frustrates me.
- 1:19:28SPEAKER_08: And it'll a lot of fun going on the K-State podcast.
- 1:19:30SPEAKER_08: But what frustrates me about Kansas State is there's zero reason for Kansas State to be outperforming Texas Tech on the football field.
- 1:19:39SPEAKER_08: We have every single advantage over them, but they seem to get one thing right, and that is coaching hires.
- 1:19:46SPEAKER_08: They know how to hire a coach, and I don't know if Kleinman's that guy.
- 1:19:50SPEAKER_08: Obviously, Kleiman is not Bill Snyder, no one will ever be Bill Snyder.
- 1:19:54SPEAKER_08: He's one of the greatest to ever do it.
- 1:19:56SPEAKER_08: And I think this one's winnable, but I don't think we're gonna win it.
- 1:20:02SPEAKER_08: I think it's uh I think we have a lot of winnable games.
- 1:20:04SPEAKER_08: Um, but I I think this is under L.
- 1:20:06SPEAKER_08: At this point, we're at two and three on my schedule, but sure, it's just it's a tough game.
- 1:20:13SPEAKER_08: A lot of this is a dark horse for a lot of people.
- 1:20:14SPEAKER_08: I mean, Kansas State's a common dark horse, but this is a uh definitely a season where they can make a run for it.
- 1:20:20SPEAKER_06: Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:20:21SPEAKER_06: No, I agree.
- 1:20:22SPEAKER_06: Um let's move on at Oklahoma State.
- 1:20:26SPEAKER_06: We don't have uh much time to uh much time to you know just get ourselves together for another tough opponent.
- 1:20:32SPEAKER_06: Uh Oklahoma State obviously was in the Big 12 championship last year, uh fell a little bit short to Baylor.
- 1:20:38SPEAKER_06: Uh Spencer Sanders returns, but like like we mentioned earlier, they lose uh star defensive coordinator Jim Knowles to the Ohio State University.
- 1:20:48SPEAKER_06: Um you know, this game is gonna be tough.
- 1:20:52SPEAKER_06: It's in still water.
- 1:20:53SPEAKER_06: Uh I'm putting TTU win probability at probably like 25%.
- 1:20:58SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I'm with you.
- 1:20:59SPEAKER_08: This is another L.
- 1:21:00SPEAKER_08: At this point, we're two and four on my schedule.
- 1:21:03SPEAKER_08: Um, Oklahoma State, much like Kansas State, is that our number, like we we don't beat Oklahoma State very often this century, or at least this decade past 12 years here.
- 1:21:13SPEAKER_08: Um, it's just they're again they're another uh favorite to win the Big 12, or at least to be in the content for it.
- 1:21:19SPEAKER_08: And I just don't think we're at that level to beat those teams yet.
- 1:21:21SPEAKER_08: So winning would obviously be awesome, uh, but even less so than Kansas State.
- 1:21:26SPEAKER_08: I don't think we're getting this one.
- 1:21:28SPEAKER_06: Yep.
- 1:21:28SPEAKER_06: Listen, we're being realistic right now.
- 1:21:30SPEAKER_06: I'm sitting here at three and three, you're sitting here at two and four, and I think we're being pretty optimistic to be quite honest.
- 1:21:37SPEAKER_08: The schedule is unbelievable.
- 1:21:39SPEAKER_06: It sucks.
- 1:21:40SPEAKER_06: The first six games suck, it's tough.
- 1:21:42SPEAKER_08: Yeah, um if we start the front loaded schedule.
- 1:21:45SPEAKER_06: If we start three and three or two and four, I think I'm pretty happy when I look at the overall grand scheme.
- 1:21:50SPEAKER_06: Now, I'm probably not gonna be happy in the moment because who is at three and three or two and four, but um, you know, I think I think realistically looking, this is pretty good setting up for Texas Tech.
- 1:22:01SPEAKER_06: And I mean, hey, if we start friggin' four and two or five and one, this is just even more high for us.
- 1:22:08SPEAKER_06: So, you know, we only have a lot of room to improve.
- 1:22:11SPEAKER_06: But this second half of the schedule is where it really gets interesting because this is how we're gonna respond.
- 1:22:16SPEAKER_06: You know, Joey has promised to get everybody up that we are gonna be the toughest, most hardworking school in the country right now.
- 1:22:27SPEAKER_06: And uh, you know, this the second half of the schedule is getting potentially after a really bad start, getting guys up for these next couple games and potentially trying to make a bowl game here.
- 1:22:38SPEAKER_06: So the next game on the schedule is West Virginia and Lubbock.
- 1:22:41SPEAKER_06: I think this is a really good opportunity for tech to potentially bounce back after a pretty rough start.
- 1:22:47SPEAKER_06: Um, I'm putting Texas Tech's win probability at 60% here.
- 1:22:50SPEAKER_08: I'm with you.
- 1:22:51SPEAKER_08: I think this is a win.
- 1:22:52SPEAKER_08: I think this is this puts us at three and four on my schedule.
- 1:22:55SPEAKER_08: I think we got this one.
- 1:22:56SPEAKER_08: Um, I think this is Neil Brown's last year.
- 1:22:59SPEAKER_08: I don't think he makes a pass this year.
- 1:23:01SPEAKER_08: There's a lot of people that are actually pretty high on West Virginia, um, with the returning talent they have.
- 1:23:05SPEAKER_08: But I think Neil Brown's kind of looking like a bust here at the upper level.
- 1:23:10SPEAKER_08: I mean, he did great at Troy and he was a favorite to take the Texas Tech job.
- 1:23:14SPEAKER_08: He wanted the Texas Tech job, he worked at Texas Tech.
- 1:23:17SPEAKER_08: Um, I would have been happy if we hired him, but I really think this is fizzling out, and I think we got this one.
- 1:23:23SPEAKER_08: I think this is a dub for uh us.
- 1:23:25SPEAKER_06: Yep, for sure.
- 1:23:26SPEAKER_06: So, well, you got three and four.
- 1:23:29SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I'm three and four now.
- 1:23:30SPEAKER_06: Three and four.
- 1:23:31SPEAKER_06: I'm at four and three after this West Virginia game.
- 1:23:34SPEAKER_06: Baylor in Lovick, second straight home game.
- 1:23:38SPEAKER_06: Baylor is going to be tough.
- 1:23:40SPEAKER_06: Dave Aranda, one of the better uh head coaches in the Big 12 right now.
- 1:23:44SPEAKER_06: Um, they lost a lot.
- 1:23:46SPEAKER_06: They have a new quarterback, they have a new running back, they have a lot of new receivers.
- 1:23:51SPEAKER_06: Um, their defense is returning some really, really good talent.
- 1:23:56SPEAKER_06: They're probably gonna have one of the best defensive lines in the country next season.
- 1:24:00SPEAKER_06: Baylor, I have as an L.
- 1:24:03SPEAKER_06: I think you probably do too.
- 1:24:05SPEAKER_06: Um, but it's in Lubbock.
- 1:24:07SPEAKER_06: But I'm putting the probability percentage here for Texas Tech at like 45%.
- 1:24:11SPEAKER_06: Because I think there's a real chance we could we could see an upset here.
- 1:24:15SPEAKER_08: I'm right there with you.
- 1:24:17SPEAKER_08: Not so much because of Texas Tech, but because we don't know what we're getting for Bailey this year.
- 1:24:22SPEAKER_08: They're losing a ton.
- 1:24:23SPEAKER_08: We don't know if they're gonna be a really good team, an average team, or a bad team.
- 1:24:27SPEAKER_08: We really don't, and I think Dave Ryan, obviously, obviously, I think Dave is one of the best coaches in the Big 12.
- 1:24:31SPEAKER_08: He's proven it he's won a trophy, something Texas Tech's never done.
- 1:24:34SPEAKER_08: So it's ouch.
- 1:24:36SPEAKER_08: Um, so if Joe's listening, there you go.
- 1:24:39SPEAKER_07: But there you go, Joe Goodman.
- 1:24:42SPEAKER_07: Enjoy it.
- 1:24:43SPEAKER_08: Yeah, but I I'm with you.
- 1:24:46SPEAKER_08: I I think I agree with you though, with those percentages.
- 1:24:48SPEAKER_08: I think this is one we can sneak out.
- 1:24:50SPEAKER_08: I think if we're winning seven games in season, this is the seventh here.
- 1:24:54SPEAKER_05: Yep.
- 1:24:55SPEAKER_08: Um, the extra one.
- 1:24:56SPEAKER_08: Uh, because I really think there's a real chance that it happens at Baylors, like at our level, if you know what I mean.
- 1:25:02SPEAKER_06: Yep.
- 1:25:02SPEAKER_06: What what if I told you that I have Texas Tech University finishing the last four games of the season four and oh?
- 1:25:13SPEAKER_08: What?
- 1:25:14SPEAKER_08: What would you say?
- 1:25:15SPEAKER_08: There's a certain team on this schedule that makes you seem high.
- 1:25:18SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 1:25:19SPEAKER_07: It it might be.
- 1:25:21SPEAKER_07: It might be, but we'll we'll get it.
- 1:25:23SPEAKER_08: It starts with K and ends with you.
- 1:25:26SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 1:25:27SPEAKER_07: Of course.
- 1:25:28SPEAKER_07: Of course.
- 1:25:29SPEAKER_07: K U.
- 1:25:30SPEAKER_06: Uh no.
- 1:25:31SPEAKER_06: The next game on the schedule is at TCU.
- 1:25:34SPEAKER_06: Of course, a home game for the Red Raiders.
- 1:25:35SPEAKER_06: This is our extra home game of the year that we get every other.
- 1:25:38SPEAKER_06: Very lucky.
- 1:25:39SPEAKER_06: It's great.
- 1:25:40SPEAKER_06: Uh, I'm gonna be in attendance for this one.
- 1:25:42SPEAKER_06: Um, a whole lot of a whole lot of other us are a whole lot of other of us.
- 1:25:47SPEAKER_06: Does that make sense?
- 1:25:47SPEAKER_06: I don't know.
- 1:25:48SPEAKER_06: At this point, put too many drinks in.
- 1:25:51SPEAKER_06: Yes.
- 1:25:52SPEAKER_06: At TCU, 65% Texas Tech win probability.
- 1:25:56SPEAKER_06: What do you think?
- 1:25:57SPEAKER_08: This is a dub.
- 1:25:58SPEAKER_08: I'm putting us at a win.
- 1:26:00SPEAKER_08: This is one of my ones that gets us the bowl eligibility.
- 1:26:02SPEAKER_08: I think TCU is grossly overestimating their move that they made in the offseason.
- 1:26:08SPEAKER_08: I think Sonny Cumby, I'm not Sonny Gumby, no, he rules.
- 1:26:11SPEAKER_08: Uh Sonny Dykes.
- 1:26:12SPEAKER_08: The other Sonny.
- 1:26:14SPEAKER_08: Somehow the other Sonny.
- 1:26:15SPEAKER_08: That's apparently a common name, I guess, at Texas Tech.
- 1:26:19SPEAKER_08: Um, I think you're uh to put it nicely off your rocker to fire Gary Patterson and hire Sonny Dykes.
- 1:26:30SPEAKER_08: As much as we love our Red Raider alumni, I think there's a reason Texas Tech did not bring him on board.
- 1:26:36SPEAKER_08: And um, I don't think he's gonna do it for him.
- 1:26:41SPEAKER_08: I think TCU's going to witness their first year in a long time of what it's like to actually be freaking bad.
- 1:26:48SPEAKER_08: They've been spoiled for a while without really packing it up.
- 1:26:52SPEAKER_08: And so I think where they're gonna witness finally with a home game for us and an away game for them in their own place of us winning.
- 1:27:00SPEAKER_08: I think this is an easy dub for us.
- 1:27:02SPEAKER_08: Not easy, shouldn't have said easy, but definitely a dub for us.
- 1:27:05SPEAKER_06: Look, they poked the bear with this.
- 1:27:07SPEAKER_08: They did, they did.
- 1:27:08SPEAKER_06: TCU poked the bear in the offseason, Brian Carrington, uh uh Donati, the AD over there.
- 1:27:15SPEAKER_06: They poked the bear with Texas Tech fan base, and they saw, and everybody saw last season in basketball what we can do when you poke the bear.
- 1:27:23SPEAKER_06: And uh, you know, so Texas Tech fans are gonna show out for this game despite what TCU wants to happen.
- 1:27:29SPEAKER_06: Um, and we're gonna take over their stadium and we're gonna win this game.
- 1:27:31SPEAKER_06: So uh this is this is a dub for me.
- 1:27:34SPEAKER_06: Uh, Kansas at home, Lubbock.
- 1:27:38SPEAKER_06: Uh, 90% win probability.
- 1:27:40SPEAKER_06: Texas Tech.
- 1:27:41SPEAKER_06: Listen, they're Kansas.
- 1:27:42SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I'm I'm I'm gonna be at this game.
- 1:27:44SPEAKER_08: I think it's a dub.
- 1:27:45SPEAKER_08: Uh I cannot again, I say this over and over again on Twitter that the new uh hot thing is saying that Kansas won't finish last in the Big 12.
- 1:27:52SPEAKER_08: And guess which team they put at 10th if they're finishing not last, Texas Tech.
- 1:27:57SPEAKER_08: And I just look I Not saying it's completely off base if you're gonna put a team there, but come on, man.
- 1:28:06SPEAKER_08: Like, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
- 1:28:08SPEAKER_08: Kansas does not have the talent to even think they're gonna finish above 10th.
- 1:28:13SPEAKER_08: It's not so much that they don't have the coaching staff.
- 1:28:16SPEAKER_08: I think they have a great good coaching staff for Kansas, but they have FCS players, they're the worst team in the FPS for a reason.
- 1:28:22SPEAKER_08: They're not taking a step up.
- 1:28:24SPEAKER_08: We're gonna crush them.
- 1:28:25SPEAKER_06: There you go.
- 1:28:26SPEAKER_06: I agree 100%.
- 1:28:27SPEAKER_06: That's a dub for Texas Tech against Kansas.
- 1:28:30SPEAKER_06: If it's not, there's some serious problems.
- 1:28:32SPEAKER_08: Um, yeah, there's a real problems.
- 1:28:34SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 1:28:35SPEAKER_06: Next game at Iowa State.
- 1:28:37SPEAKER_06: This is uh this is a confusing one when you look at it, because Iowa State lost a ton, a ton from their team.
- 1:28:45SPEAKER_06: Whether it's Will McDonald, whether it's Brock Purdy or Brees Hall or uh Charlie Kollar.
- 1:28:50SPEAKER_06: I mean, they lost a ton, and there's no denying that.
- 1:28:54SPEAKER_06: Now, Matt Campbell is a great coach in his own right.
- 1:28:57SPEAKER_06: He's proved it because he's been so successful at Iowa State, who has historically not been a very good football program.
- 1:29:04SPEAKER_06: Um, this one yeah, the historically they've been a bad football program.
- 1:29:10SPEAKER_06: Well, the worst.
- 1:29:10SPEAKER_06: Um, yeah, so this was confusing to me why so many people are so kind of high on Iowa State.
- 1:29:18SPEAKER_06: I get the Matt Campbell thing, that's all they have going for right now.
- 1:29:22SPEAKER_06: That's it.
- 1:29:23SPEAKER_06: Like they have some decent recruits, but they lost their whole offense and they lost some really key pieces on this defense.
- 1:29:31SPEAKER_06: Listen, I have Texas Tech winning in Ames.
- 1:29:33SPEAKER_06: I have a uh and and I'm putting the Texas Tech win probability at 45%.
- 1:29:39SPEAKER_06: To me, I think we get this win because I don't see Iowa State being a very good team this year.
- 1:29:45SPEAKER_08: Look, I mean, and saying that Matt Campbell is the the secret sauce isn't Liley.
- 1:29:52SPEAKER_08: I mean, the guy's earned it, he's the greatest coach they've ever had in history, and that's probably not even close.
- 1:29:57SPEAKER_08: Um, but they still haven't reached 10 wins.
- 1:30:00SPEAKER_08: But I'm with you.
- 1:30:01SPEAKER_08: This is one of my dubs.
- 1:30:02SPEAKER_08: This is how we get this is the bowl eligible game right here with my with my schedule.
- 1:30:07SPEAKER_08: And I kind of repeated of last year.
- 1:30:09SPEAKER_08: Am I right?
- 1:30:10SPEAKER_08: So I I think Iowa State's entering a rebuilding season.
- 1:30:14SPEAKER_08: I think they kind of blew their run at the Big 12 championship.
- 1:30:19SPEAKER_08: Um, so I think they're kind of back to their whole rebuild backup to trying to chase in maybe a Big 12 title here, but it's not happening this season.
- 1:30:28SPEAKER_08: I think we get the dub.
- 1:30:30SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I think so too.
- 1:30:31SPEAKER_06: And uh that may be a hot take um for some people because I think a lot of people have Iowa State beating us in Ames, which I don't necessarily think is a bad take.
- 1:30:40SPEAKER_06: Uh I just think they're underestimating tech, and I think they're overestimating the uh the talent that Iowa State has on this year's team.
- 1:30:47SPEAKER_08: So uh before we move on to the sooners, I just want to say that like it kind of sucks kind of talk about this because we just what's so great about hosting this podcast is interacting with these other fan bases and like falling in love with the other fans.
- 1:30:59SPEAKER_08: I mean, like, we're not talking shit.
- 1:31:00SPEAKER_06: No, we promised listen, we love trading.
- 1:31:05SPEAKER_06: Yeah, he's been awesome to come on the podcast, talk about Iowa State, Joe Goodman and other and other and just even on Twitter, just like interacting in person.
- 1:31:12SPEAKER_08: Like, it's just it's been a ton of fun.
- 1:31:14SPEAKER_08: The Big 12 fans like unifying and being the hateful eight together, but it just kind of sucks being like, Yeah, we'll but we'll beat you.
- 1:31:21SPEAKER_08: But that's not part of the fun, though.
- 1:31:22SPEAKER_06: No, that's part of the fun, man.
- 1:31:24SPEAKER_06: During game week, we're enemies, exactly.
- 1:31:25SPEAKER_06: That's what happens.
- 1:31:26SPEAKER_06: Um, but then next week, if you're playing Oklahoma or Texas, we're uh we're obviously on your side.
- 1:31:32SPEAKER_08: Yeah, we're huge cyclones for Mountaineers.
- 1:31:34SPEAKER_06: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:31:35SPEAKER_06: Speaking of the Sooners, last game of the year or last Big 12 game of the year, I should say.
- 1:31:41SPEAKER_06: Well, well, potentially, I don't know.
- 1:31:43SPEAKER_06: Potentially, we'll make the Big 12 traffic.
- 1:31:45SPEAKER_06: Maybe who knows?
- 1:31:46SPEAKER_06: Uh, but uh yeah, more than more likely than not, the last Big 12 game of the year.
- 1:31:51SPEAKER_06: Uh, Sooners coming to Lubbock.
- 1:31:54SPEAKER_06: Um, listen, I put this uh win probability at 25%.
- 1:31:58SPEAKER_06: Uh, it's not looking good for us.
- 1:32:01SPEAKER_06: I know we've we've outlined what happened at Oklahoma.
- 1:32:04SPEAKER_06: Lincoln Riley's gone, Brett Venivals is in, uh, Dylan Gabriel's a quarterback.
- 1:32:09SPEAKER_06: Uh, they lost a ton of talent, but they're Oklahoma, so of course they're gonna bring in a ton of talent.
- 1:32:14SPEAKER_06: Um, the probability is not good for Texas Tech to win this game, but what I think a lot of people are saying is that Texas Tech is going to get one upset.
- 1:32:25SPEAKER_06: And in my eyes, it's gonna be either Oklahoma or Baylor.
- 1:32:29SPEAKER_06: One of those two, Texas Tech is gonna win.
- 1:32:32SPEAKER_06: Uh just by sheer will.
- 1:32:36SPEAKER_06: Um, whether it's UT not in that mix.
- 1:32:39SPEAKER_06: Uh you could throw UT in that mix.
- 1:32:41SPEAKER_06: I think we're gonna beat UT.
- 1:32:43SPEAKER_06: I I just do.
- 1:32:43SPEAKER_06: I don't I'm not putting UT on the same pedestal that Oklahoma and Baylor are on, right?
- 1:32:48SPEAKER_08: You're right.
- 1:32:48SPEAKER_08: No, no, I I I I was originally thinking that UT might be ranked by them, but they're gonna be freaking cream corned by Alabama.
- 1:32:54SPEAKER_06: So they're gonna get creamed by Alabama and then they they might have a tough game against UTSA.
- 1:33:00SPEAKER_08: So um oh, let's go, runners.
- 1:33:02SPEAKER_08: Let's go guy who originally wanted to be at Texas Tech.
- 1:33:06SPEAKER_06: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:33:07SPEAKER_06: So um, in my eyes, I I predicted Baylor a loss for Tech and Lubbock.
- 1:33:12SPEAKER_06: I'm gonna predict an upset here and say Texas Tech is going to win their eighth game of the year against the Oklahoma Sooners.
- 1:33:20SPEAKER_06: We're gonna have a lot of momentum going towards us.
- 1:33:23SPEAKER_06: We just won three straight against TCU, Kansas, and Iowa State.
- 1:33:27SPEAKER_06: And Oklahoma is gonna be a win.
- 1:33:29SPEAKER_06: And we're as soon as we win, we're gonna start uh demolition and production on the South End zone and the new uh training facility and all that good stuff uh over their$200 million project.
- 1:33:41SPEAKER_06: Uh and this is just gonna kind of really ride us into the Joey McGuire era of having an unbelievable year, and everybody's gonna be a happy Texas Tech football fan.
- 1:33:51SPEAKER_08: This isn't as hot as it normally is.
- 1:33:54SPEAKER_08: It's this is definitely a season where beating OU is absolutely a possibility.
- 1:34:00SPEAKER_08: Yep, and there's positions where we beat them at, and I think quarterback might be one of them, honestly.
- 1:34:06SPEAKER_08: Could be so the most important position on the field.
- 1:34:09SPEAKER_08: Um it's been way too freaking long.
- 1:34:13SPEAKER_08: I want to say another word since we've been the Sooners.
- 1:34:16SPEAKER_08: It's it's been like 10 years, yeah, and to snap it now, beating UTNOU, beating them now is of an utmost importance because we are in the last times we may play them potentially in our lifetime, potentially, and we don't know where uh CFB is going.
- 1:34:38SPEAKER_08: Uh, maybe we'll be in the same conference as them one day if it all falls apart like that.
- 1:34:43SPEAKER_08: But right now it's it's looking like we won't.
- 1:34:46SPEAKER_08: So getting them now and firing the players up like that now could not be more important.
- 1:34:51SPEAKER_08: And I think Joe McGuire is the guy that is up for it, is up for reminding them that of it, thinking telling them that you know they think they're way better than you, and their fans think they're way better than you, and jumping up and popping in the mouth.
- 1:35:05SPEAKER_08: There's few teams that you te and know you would rather lose more than Texas Tech.
- 1:35:10SPEAKER_08: So I think we're out there.
- 1:35:11SPEAKER_08: I'm with you, buddy.
- 1:35:12SPEAKER_08: If we're gonna pull up an offset, I think OE's up there.
- 1:35:15SPEAKER_06: But what do you what do you actually have?
- 1:35:17SPEAKER_06: Do you have us winning or losing this game?
- 1:35:19SPEAKER_08: I think we're losing.
- 1:35:21SPEAKER_08: Listen, I think we're losing.
- 1:35:23SPEAKER_08: Homie, homie, come come week nine.
- 1:35:26SPEAKER_08: Or no, not week nine.
- 1:35:27SPEAKER_08: Uh, what would the what would this be?
- 1:35:29SPEAKER_08: Week 12.
- 1:35:30SPEAKER_08: Week 12.
- 1:35:31SPEAKER_08: Sorry.
- 1:35:31SPEAKER_08: Uh the rank nine, so it's like a nine.
- 1:35:34SPEAKER_08: Um, yeah, we come come come week final.
- 1:35:39SPEAKER_08: Insert number.
- 1:35:41SPEAKER_08: We're beating OU.
- 1:35:44SPEAKER_07: Listen, the Sonic Celters are hitting me right now.
- 1:35:47SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 1:35:47SPEAKER_07: Well, let's and we're beating OU.
- 1:35:51SPEAKER_08: I'm on the state the podcast.
- 1:35:53SPEAKER_07: Yes.
- 1:35:54SPEAKER_07: No, I uh I was looking at it uh 2011 last time we beat OU.
- 1:35:58SPEAKER_08: Uh we also were 10 years ago.
- 1:36:00SPEAKER_06: We were going back and forth with them from 05 to 2011.
- 1:36:03SPEAKER_06: It was every other year.
- 1:36:04SPEAKER_06: It was tech OU, tech O.
- 1:36:06SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 1:36:07SPEAKER_06: Let's let's uh let's get back to that.
- 1:36:09SPEAKER_06: How about the next three years?
- 1:36:12SPEAKER_06: But yes, uh, you have our final total from these first 12 games.
- 1:36:17SPEAKER_06: I think you had a six and six, yeah, correct?
- 1:36:20SPEAKER_06: Okay, so still making a bowl.
- 1:36:21SPEAKER_06: I have us at a much more positive, uh kind of delusional um look at eight and four.
- 1:36:28SPEAKER_08: You you can't say delusional with eight wins.
- 1:36:31SPEAKER_06: It is for Texas Tech.
- 1:36:33SPEAKER_06: How we've been these last few years with a first year head coach, yeah.
- 1:36:36SPEAKER_08: I've never seen Texas Tech win eight games outside of before we went to college.
- 1:36:41SPEAKER_06: Yeah, you shouldn't say that, but that's the case right now.
- 1:36:45SPEAKER_06: Um but I do have us, I do have Joey keeping this team together and keeping them fighting and winning the last four games of the year, uh, winning one against West Virginia, uh, winning one against freaking Texas, and then winning one against Houston and Murray State.
- 1:37:03SPEAKER_06: So uh that that equals out to eight and four.
- 1:37:07SPEAKER_06: Um, I know that's probably a hot take for a lot of people, um, but I really think the talent is there on this team, and if we can put it together in year one, it's gonna be uh a really magical year, and um we're gonna get the fan base hyped again about football.
- 1:37:21SPEAKER_08: You know what the worst part is is what's happening?
- 1:37:24SPEAKER_08: I'm a pretty optimistic dude.
- 1:37:25SPEAKER_08: You know me.
- 1:37:26SPEAKER_08: Um I get stupid about tech sports.
- 1:37:30SPEAKER_08: So as soon as the first game happens, my my picks don't matter.
- 1:37:34SPEAKER_08: So my picks don't matter, we're winning the winning, we're winning the freaking national championship, if you ask me.
- 1:37:40SPEAKER_08: So this was fun, man.
- 1:37:42SPEAKER_08: It's always good to hop back on football.
- 1:37:44SPEAKER_08: We're finally back to real sports.
- 1:37:46SPEAKER_07: And I'm sorry it's been a while, y'all, since we uh recorded an episode, but well, you know, we did we did record a uh three and a half hour one the last one's pretty close.
- 1:37:54SPEAKER_07: This this one's probably gonna be two, but um yeah, man.
- 1:37:58SPEAKER_07: Let's uh let's end it with song of the week.
- 1:38:00SPEAKER_07: Go ahead.
- 1:38:01SPEAKER_08: All right, so bunny.
- 1:38:03SPEAKER_08: Um, I was contemplating doing a wedding song since I'm getting married next weekend.
- 1:38:08SPEAKER_08: Oh come next podcast, I'll be married.
- 1:38:14SPEAKER_08: You'll be my wedding.
- 1:38:15SPEAKER_08: So I decided to go with a love song, not the one that I was talking about before, but this one is a guy out of Dallas.
- 1:38:23SPEAKER_08: His name is Colton Venner.
- 1:38:26SPEAKER_08: I've never done him yet, and I'm with the song going with is another love song since we're kind of in that mood now is Honey Slow.
- 1:38:33SPEAKER_08: It's Honey Slow by Colton Venner, dude.
- 1:38:37SPEAKER_08: Just perfection of what you want out of modern country music.
- 1:38:41SPEAKER_08: Y'all listen to that, it's intoxicating, it's lovely, it's perfect.
- 1:38:49SPEAKER_01: Honey in the driveway slow dead, honey in the driveway slow dead, honey slow.
- 1:39:01SPEAKER_06: Okay, very nice.
- 1:39:03SPEAKER_06: Yes.
- 1:39:03SPEAKER_06: Um, I mean, I think the people that they've been listening for a while know that both you and me are getting married, you next weekend.
- 1:39:10SPEAKER_06: It's uh it's gonna be awesome.
- 1:39:12SPEAKER_06: I'm excited to be there.
- 1:39:14SPEAKER_06: I'm I'm I'm proud to stand by your side and do all that good stuff.
- 1:39:17SPEAKER_06: Um, you know, couldn't be happier for you and Annie, and uh this is gonna be uh it's gonna be a great time.
- 1:39:22SPEAKER_06: It's gonna be a hell of a time because you're putting on a party.
- 1:39:24SPEAKER_08: This is post bachelor party episode, and uh y'all gave me a kick for I know we don't do small talk on this episode, but y'all gave me a kick-ass bachelor party, and we went to a Wade Bowing concert, and I remember some of it.
- 1:39:38SPEAKER_08: It was a great time.
- 1:39:40SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I'm glad you remember some of it because you were a uh you were a robot there at the end.
- 1:39:46SPEAKER_07: It was it's like weekended Bernie's.
- 1:39:49SPEAKER_06: As I should be on my bachelor party, it was great.
- 1:39:52SPEAKER_06: It was it was a great time.
- 1:39:53SPEAKER_06: Uh, but yeah, so if um, you know, unfortunately we're gonna miss the Murray State game, but hey, we're gonna get score updates.
- 1:40:00SPEAKER_06: We're gonna go back and watch all this crap before we give you another podcast.
- 1:40:03SPEAKER_08: Well, set it on record.
- 1:40:04SPEAKER_06: Yeah, no, absolutely.
- 1:40:05SPEAKER_06: And then uh, no, just super happy for you and Annie and excited to be there.
- 1:40:09SPEAKER_06: Um, my song of the week is not is not fitting the love scene.
- 1:40:14SPEAKER_06: Um, it's actually just something that I uh uh we were at the bars not last weekend, but the weekend prior.
- 1:40:19SPEAKER_06: And um, we were just sitting there drinking beers, and um, we heard this song pop up, and I was like, Oh my god, man, I haven't listened to this in three years, three, four years.
- 1:40:29SPEAKER_06: And we listened to this all through high school uh with our friend group.
- 1:40:33SPEAKER_06: Um, it's Collard Greens by School Boy Q and uh featuring Kendrick Lamar.
- 1:40:37SPEAKER_06: Uh just such a bop, man.
- 1:40:39SPEAKER_06: I mean, just such a banger of a song.
- 1:40:42SPEAKER_06: Um, you know, always fun to listen to Collard Greens, uh School Boy Q featuring Kendrick.
- 1:40:48SPEAKER_03: Oh oh, buy anything, cop that oh, collar greens, pedigrees, don't make it happen.
- 1:41:02SPEAKER_08: One of the few songs I actually recognize when it comes to the hip hop genre.
- 1:41:06SPEAKER_08: Guys, golly, when we were being irresponsible in the high school and drinking bread sodas and corn sodas, this song was on on repeats.
- 1:41:16SPEAKER_08: I swear.
- 1:41:17SPEAKER_07: Yeah, no, absolutely.
- 1:41:19SPEAKER_07: So, um, man, that's gonna do it.
- 1:41:21SPEAKER_06: Um, excited for football season.
- 1:41:23SPEAKER_06: The next time you'll hear from us, hopefully, we'll be coming off at dub against Murray State, uh, and a big time dub uh at that.
- 1:41:30SPEAKER_06: And uh Tristan will be married.
- 1:41:32SPEAKER_06: So uh again, shout out to y'all.
- 1:41:34SPEAKER_06: Um, really excited.
- 1:41:35SPEAKER_06: Well Red Raider.
