- 0:00Human nature, my weapon of choice.
- 0:04From the moment I killed the young lady in the record shop, I knew you would
- 0:09stop at nothing to catch me.
- 0:11I also knew Ilsa wouldn't have a choice, whether she broke you that night you
- 0:15met or let you go, whether you let her run in Morocco, whether she went to Atlee or not.
- 0:23You were certain we'd end up where we are, right now.
- 0:31And again, so was I.
- 0:36Music.
- 0:38We'll be right back.
- 1:05The End.
- 1:24Hey everybody, welcome back to another exciting episode of Citizen's Frame.
- 1:27I'm your wonderful, charming, very good-looking host, Kieran. Right. Okay.
- 1:35And Humble, too. Yeah, I see. Yeah.
- 1:40We're going to give you the sex of a treat. We just dropped off Mission Impossible.
- 1:44Ghost Portacol to you. We're going to drop this one off right now after we're
- 1:47done here because I got to say, the ratings for our little Ghost Portacol were through the roof.
- 1:53One of our most downloaded podcasts, a new release. and hit so many targets.
- 1:58So thank you to all who jumped on that bandwagon.
- 2:02And hopefully that bleeds into the Final Destination franchise that we're about to tackle.
- 2:08So it should be fun. A lot of people do like our retrospectives.
- 2:12And then you've got Shark Month. Yeah. Yeah. By the way, what films are we doing for Shark Month?
- 2:18I hope we're obviously Jaws, but what about something like Jaws 3D?
- 2:22I actually think Jaws 2 is underrated.
- 2:25Well, then they'll be just doing a franchise then. Yeah, I know.
- 2:28But it's a bit of a tough one to pick. No, we'll probably do Jaws,
- 2:32Deep Blue Sea, which is underrated Jim.
- 2:35And then a couple bad ones, like Shark Piranha or something.
- 2:38Whatever the fuck you got. Sharknado. We'll figure it out.
- 2:41Sharknado. or something. Alright guys here we go.
- 2:45This is it this is when the Mission
- 2:48Impossible go batshit crazy with
- 2:51their stunts and this is all due to Tom Cruise going insane and of course bringing
- 2:57on the great great and very talented Oscar winning filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie
- 3:04Christopher McQuarrie has directed he's kind of like the Tony Scott to Denzel Washington.
- 3:09Him and Tom cruise over quite a few times with
- 3:12jack reacher edge of tomorrow top gun
- 3:15maverick he's written all those he got the oscar for
- 3:18the usual suspects he wrote that he started
- 3:21as a screenwriter but obviously made the transition quite
- 3:24smoothly to director and he hasn't looked
- 3:27back and i like seeing him stuff i like seeing his name in
- 3:30the credits and these guys are definitely going to form
- 3:33one hell of a great relationship in the near future
- 3:36and as you already know yeah i think this
- 3:39is where the series really sort of hits the ground running I mean it's very
- 3:43good up until this point but I think this is where it really finds its fate
- 3:48and certainly you know with Cruise and Macquarie as a double act together you
- 3:52know producing and obviously writing and directing with Macquarie.
- 3:57Yeah, they really find their feet here with this one and going forward. They do.
- 4:02They kind of, Ghost Protocol, how much I still adore it, this kind of fixes
- 4:07what Ghost Protocol didn't have.
- 4:10Like Vinter, the badass, the bone breaker, whatever his name is.
- 4:16But we got a henchman, in other words.
- 4:18And then we get the awesome, you want to cast a creepy bad guy,
- 4:22you give us Sean Harris, McLean in this. He is so good.
- 4:26And he will come back. Spoiler alert, if you didn't know that.
- 4:29Yeah, he's a very memorable bad guy, and he oozes sort of evil.
- 4:34So, yeah. Yeah. Very, very impressive. We got the whole gang back.
- 4:39We got Ethan, Benji, Brandt.
- 4:41Our boy Luther is back, full time.
- 4:44Yay! The love of my life. She doesn't know it yet, but she'll come around when I wake her up.
- 4:51That's terrible. From your cellar? That's terrible. Yeah. Ilsa? Yeah. How we can Lane.
- 4:58Rebecca Ferguson calls it stalking, but Ciarán calls it selective walking.
- 5:02Bit of a Rich Hall joke there, but go ahead. I call it love.
- 5:07Yeah, she doesn't... She'll come around. And neither does the judge.
- 5:13It's all fixed. Right, right.
- 5:16Oh, by the way, do you know she, her parents, I believe, at least one of her
- 5:19parents are actually from Northern Ireland. She actually has connections to here.
- 5:23Although I think she grew up in Sweden? Yeah, she's definitely raised somewhere
- 5:28else in New York. I know that.
- 5:29But you can throw a rock. Somebody's related to somebody in Ireland, for fuck's sake.
- 5:33Yeah, well, this is it. Alright, we got Atlee, Lauren, the Prime Minister, Venter, who I like.
- 5:39And Alan Hunley's back, played by Alec Baldwin.
- 5:43Paula Patton and Maggie Q weren't going to come back, but she got any conflicts.
- 5:47Paula Patton's character, I didn't care didn't come back, because none of that guessed her.
- 5:51It's just her role was kind of, eh, in the last one. It was a very underdeveloped character. Yeah.
- 5:57To be fair to her. Yeah, that's definitely editing issues as well.
- 6:01And of course, who I liked to have seen come back, but didn't,
- 6:04Maggie Q from the third one. She was a good character in that one. She was decent. Yeah.
- 6:09Another blockbuster, 7.4 in the ratings, just like Ghost Protocol,
- 6:14and almost 700 million worldwide. There you go.
- 6:18We got a new scorer on board. Michael, Gina, Gina, Gina, Chino Cagacho,
- 6:25I never could get his name right, but he stepped down.
- 6:27And then we've got a new guy, Joe Correa, and he's now doing the score.
- 6:31I love the scores for all the Mission Impossible, besides Mission Impossible 2, which was terrible.
- 6:36But this one is, it's out of the park, like I said, with most of them.
- 6:41But we're going to start off with where protocol left off. Do you like that?
- 6:46Yes, we're going to start off with where protocol left off.
- 6:49Right. All right. You should get a job, but you know, presenting trailers.
- 6:53So you shoot movie trailers. I'd be like, yeah.
- 6:56They thought it was safe. But now Citizen Frame is back, and they're better than ever.
- 7:03Okay. Okay. The one thing you won't be doing is fucking trailers.
- 7:06That was fucking terrible.
- 7:07Well, you know, better than yours, anyway. I was like, his name was Trevor.
- 7:14Everyone was afraid of him. Until they all realized he was just a clueless twat.
- 7:23Rebecca Ferguson thought she was safe. but little did she know that she was
- 7:27never getting out of Ciaran's cellar.
- 7:30You weren't supposed to say that out loud. I told you that in confidence.
- 7:36Her mission, should she choose to accept it, was to escape from Ciaran's dungeon.
- 7:45You know what's funny? People are going to listen to this. Oh my God,
- 7:47Rebecca Ferguson's been kidnapped by that Ciaran guy and she's just a frame.
- 7:51Yeah, call the FBI. Call IMF.
- 7:54Call Tom Cruise in. you'd be a shit mission impossible that'd be awesome people
- 7:59are like oh my god siren who's siren you mean Kieran isn't this pronounced siren who's she it's a guy oh,
- 8:07yeah no no I need to hire me as like a henchman yeah and then be a boring henchman
- 8:13ever you'd be like where's henchman Trevor oh uh do you guys realize that Doctor Who's on right now,
- 8:21I'd be a great henchman I'd talk him to death as opposed to fighting because
- 8:25it'd be absolutely shit at that.
- 8:27They'll call you the hangman because people hang themselves if they have to
- 8:30listen to you talk about fucking neighbours and talk to who.
- 8:38That'd be pretty cool, but Mr. Cruise, if you're listening to this,
- 8:41you know, we're available if the pay's right.
- 8:44I might have to quit my day job sadly though.
- 8:48So, let's talk about bad crazy stunts. I love the fact it's in the opening sequence.
- 8:54This fucking thing is awesome.
- 8:56I think it was like 12 takes they took off this plane takeoff scene where he's
- 9:01literally hanging just from a cord from this plane.
- 9:05Yeah, I think it was like six or seven times. I can't remember,
- 9:07but it was multiple times they took off.
- 9:10He's a crazy bastard, basically. Fucking love him. Fucking love him,
- 9:13man. Yeah. And the whole scene is just so set up well.
- 9:16And he's like, where's Ethan? They're arguing, you know.
- 9:20Yeah, Benji and Luther. Rames and the gang.
- 9:23And where's Ethan and he just jumps on the fucking wing,
- 9:29He goes up with Ethan shouting at Ben. He opened the door, opened the door,
- 9:32you know, from his computer. He goes, it's open. He goes, it's the wrong one, you know.
- 9:36So fucking good. What a great scene. I mean, again, some of these stunts we
- 9:39can't describe. You got to see it, which I'm sure people listening to this have
- 9:42already seen it. It's fucking amazing.
- 9:44No, I've, I've, over, over the years, I've really grown to respect and like Tom Cruise a lot.
- 9:50Especially with stuff like this, you know, obviously. And he's just a total professional.
- 9:55And I think he's a real credit to the movie industry. You know.
- 9:59And, you know, yes, I've had issues with him in the past, but not that he gives a shit.
- 10:03But I think the real point in his career, the real sort of point where I grew
- 10:10to like him is whenever he got his hair cut.
- 10:11I think he stopped all the irritating stuff, you know, that he was doing,
- 10:17you know, jumping on Oprah's sofa while he had the longer hair.
- 10:20So once he got his hair cut, he sort of liked Samson, but instead of losing
- 10:24his strength, he gained it, you know.
- 10:26But yes, I do like Cruz a lot. Yeah. He's bang for the buck.
- 10:31And yeah, it's just a wonderful opening sequence. And the whole,
- 10:35and then when he finally gets into the plane, he parachutes himself and he ties
- 10:39himself to the cargo that they need to get.
- 10:42And he sees the gunman and he just looks at him and he nudges and he takes off.
- 10:47And the thing kicks in. And then we get our fucking cool credits.
- 10:50But yeah, I just love the whole thing. And I do like the fact that the IMF is
- 10:53still under investigation for misconduct because this is carrying over from the last film.
- 10:59Yes, along with the syndicate that they investigate in this film,
- 11:03that was set up at the end of the last one.
- 11:05Even though they all might have characters that come back, this is the first
- 11:10one where well, instead of the protocol, where they start to bleed into each other.
- 11:15Yes. Well, this is a direct continuation.
- 11:19I love this.
- 11:23Sequence, especially I see with the introduction of lame played by guy.
- 11:27I always like to see Sean Harris and, and don't fucking even mention Dr. Who.
- 11:33I swear to God, if you mentioned Dr. Who at all with Sean Harris, I will kill you.
- 11:39I know you're just waiting because he's fucking English or Scottish.
- 11:44But just don't. I don't believe he's ever been in Dr. Okay, good.
- 11:48There we go. We're good. We're good. We'll get it. We'll save him.
- 11:50Yeah. Yeah. Sadly, but no, no, no, he is, he is quite a sort of,
- 11:55up until this point, he was quite a well-known sort of British face on TV dramas and stuff,
- 12:01you know, that sort of thing, but he has a great presence here and that is so
- 12:04cold and chilling with that opening scene, you know, with Cruz,
- 12:08what he does to the girl who works in the library.
- 12:12Yeah, well, that whole sequence when he walks into the record shop,
- 12:18and it's all jazz and blues and stuff.
- 12:21I didn't catch this until I saw this, but I didn't catch this until I saw the
- 12:26film again, a little more clear, where when he walks in and he talks to that
- 12:31girl, we can actually see Sean Harris in the scene.
- 12:35Yeah, in the background. He's in the background listening to
- 12:37a record in one of those booths where you can listen to you know music before
- 12:40you buy it one of those old classic you know vintage 50s
- 12:43kind of record stores in the modern age and but
- 12:46he's in that corner and i didn't notice that till i saw it again but it's such
- 12:50a great introduction when he sits down he's listening to the record and then
- 12:53you think he's getting his next mission or whatever's happening more an update
- 12:58on the mission they're currently on but what happens is the mission ends up
- 13:02being it's sean harris it's Lane.
- 13:04He finds he's being trapped and he's trapped inside this booth now all of a sudden.
- 13:08And we see this beautiful young girl who is probably obviously part of the Tom Cruise's squad. Yeah.
- 13:16Shazam F. And then gets shot in the head by Lane.
- 13:20He can't do anything because he's trapped in the booth. And then you see the.
- 13:24Fog of the whatever it is they use to knock him out.
- 13:28But what I liked about this whole sequence was the fact, finally,
- 13:33And I like my top grooves, but it's nice. He finally gets one. He finally gets...
- 13:40He finally gets caught. Well, there's a couple of times here where he fails, including at the opera.
- 13:46I know we originally, we'll get to it, but he originally saves at the opera
- 13:51the Austrian chancellor or prime minister, possibly.
- 13:55But then, well, later on, Lane does get him, you know, at the end of the scene.
- 14:00But, yeah, so there's a couple of times he fails, and I think that's good.
- 14:04That sets up an actual threat from the villain, where, yeah,
- 14:08we're sort of, we're on charter territory here. Yeah.
- 14:13I mean, they did this with three pretty well with Philip Seymour Hoffman.
- 14:17There's an opening sequence of three where you see Tom Cruz and he's tied up
- 14:22and beaten down, and Philip Seymour Hoffman is threatening to kill his wife in front of him.
- 14:27We won't go back to that, but it's the one time you kind of see him really vulnerable.
- 14:31And just know how to get out of this.
- 14:34And so it's nice to see this back. And it also, like you said,
- 14:37brings back the villain.
- 14:39Like this guy knows what he's doing. He's going to come after you and he's going to take you down.
- 14:43Unlike the last Ghost Protocol, they're all kind of just there to.
- 14:47We have a proper villain here. Yeah. Yeah. And a proper threat for dramatic purposes. It's bang on.
- 14:55Now you'll find out the syndicate is
- 14:57a lot like Spectre. The syndicate was initially just a test by MI6. MI6.
- 15:05MI6. It was the prime minister and the MI6 decided, let's do this thing called
- 15:12a syndicate, kind of like what the IMF is to the CIA.
- 15:16Yes. But what happens is Lane went rogue, and this is what happens.
- 15:23And our girl, Ilsa, our girl, Ilsa, is there to, is a mole to figure out what
- 15:31Lane's whole objective is within the syndicate.
- 15:34So she's supposedly been kicked out of MI6, but she's not.
- 15:39She's there to try to figure out what's going on.
- 15:42Yeah, and at will, the English guy essentially put it to the British Prime Minister
- 15:48about starting up the syndicate.
- 15:50He was rejected by the Prime Minister, but he went ahead and did it anyway with
- 15:54these sort of rogue agents.
- 15:57And Faust, the Rebecca Ferguson character She is basically set up to investigate
- 16:03it But she's set up to fail And she is disavowed So it's quite complex She wasn't
- 16:10disavowed It was set up to make her like she was disavowed So Lane would take her in,
- 16:15But she's then betrayed as well. Well, she's betrayed by all of them.
- 16:20Yeah. There's no good guy. That's the great thing about it. It's kind of like the CIA.
- 16:24Yes. You know, she's by herself. The MI6 is fucking her over.
- 16:28CIA is fucking over Ethan Hunt. So that's why I like the relationship between
- 16:32these two, because there's a relatability to what they're going through.
- 16:36Yes. And I think that's why it plays so well.
- 16:39And I would say as well, you know what I love about this one?
- 16:41It actually has the feel of an old 1960s spy thriller.
- 16:48Not just the James Bond ones, but obviously the ones on TV. Obviously the Mission
- 16:53Impossible series, which I'm no expert on.
- 16:56But also things like the man from Uncle the Saint and all those sort of 1960s.
- 17:03That great sort of golden age of spy thrillers.
- 17:06This has the feel of those and I love that. you
- 17:09know it's proper espionage whereas the previous film was
- 17:12more of an action film for me anyway this is
- 17:15a proper spy espionage thriller with double crossing
- 17:19and all that yeah uh that's smart that's yeah that's about right yeah and you
- 17:24you'll you'll get that just in this scene alone with when ethan gets after being
- 17:30knocked out he's hung up now and we get elsa who we think at the time as a baddie,
- 17:36helps Ethan escape from this. It's a nice little scene, actually.
- 17:39And it's nice to see a woman getting her due. And she actually plays a really
- 17:43big part in this. She's not just for looks and for an attraction.
- 17:47That's the one thing smart about Mission Impossible. They kind of stay away
- 17:50from the romantic element. It's always there.
- 17:53They always wink at the audience. It's something going on. But they never exploit
- 17:57it. And they never bring it into the story.
- 17:59And I like that. They're professionals at the end of the day.
- 18:01And they're there to do a job.
- 18:03And I have to admit, I have to admit, I love the name The Bone Doctor, and that's Vinter.
- 18:10He's actually very good in this, and we need a good answer. Yeah,
- 18:12I would say there is sexual tension there, but, you know, Ethan Hunt's married,
- 18:16so they don't actually get it on. It's not, you know, they're- He's not married?
- 18:20No, he is. Not known anymore?
- 18:22I know, but, you know, his wife's in hiding, you know what I mean? No, no, he's dead.
- 18:28He could no longer be in touch with her. We'll find that out in the next movie.
- 18:32But she's still alive Yeah but they're not together Yeah but anyway You can
- 18:37fuck who he wants damn it Right okay.
- 18:42But not Ilsa Right I like
- 18:46Yeah cause you got her locked in the cellar But
- 18:49no basically Yeah there is great
- 18:52sexual tension But it doesn't distract From the
- 18:56cool stuff and the spy stuff It's very well handled You're
- 19:00not rolling your fucking eyes at it like roger
- 19:03moore sleeping with all the ladies like in the second one
- 19:05with the thandy newton bollocks you know where tom cruise
- 19:08oh you're so beautiful i'm like fuck off tom
- 19:11just give us some crazy stunts and spice shit you know
- 19:15so yeah and full credit again
- 19:17to tom cruise i think he because he's basically the real crux of this entire
- 19:22franchise so credit to him i think he has improved with everyone and he's realized
- 19:28where maybe ones have maybe maybe not failed but have actually fell down a little bit so yeah top dude,
- 19:37I love the fight sequence in the opera when they when they try to take the shot
- 19:41at the Austrian Chancellor and that whole sequence with Ethan and the henchmen
- 19:46on the top of the yes Vanilla Ice crossed with the Terminator.
- 19:51But again it's cool because what I like about Tom Cruise in this he knows he's
- 19:56a small guy very tiny and this guy's a fucking giant and they play on that.
- 20:02And he looks up at him, but the funny thing is there are all these elevated
- 20:06rafters, and so it keeps kind of going up and down.
- 20:09So when he's looking like a small guy, one starts going up and now he's on his,
- 20:13you know, he's on the same length, same height. Yes.
- 20:16It's just fun the way the whole thing's, and they have to be quiet because they
- 20:20can't disturb the play. Because the opera's going on.
- 20:22They can't disturb the play because the assassination has to happen.
- 20:25Yeah. So it's great fun and great death too.
- 20:28Yeah. Chuck's moving, he hits the horn, he falls on the horns or something. they're
- 20:31getting chased in the car with um by the way i
- 20:34love the name elsa faust you know that sort of
- 20:36harks back to well the devil the um you know
- 20:39faust you know so it does and yeah i think she's a great character actually
- 20:44so the overall i love her her loyalties are sort of chopping and changing throughout
- 20:49the film you know it's just really well played of course by rebecca oh the whole
- 20:55character of of elsa is going to be like this like.
- 20:59I can't remember what happened. She's more with him in the second one.
- 21:02But there's a distrust with her. That's probably what the Faust game kind of
- 21:06plays with. You know, do you make a deal with the devil?
- 21:09Yes, yes. Well, this is it. So a lot smarter than what you would get from a
- 21:13Bond film, which would be just like on the top. Oh, well, no,
- 21:16no. I think that's all fair.
- 21:17I mean, there have been some smart Bond films, and, you know, traditionally.
- 21:20Well, I know, I know, but I'm making a joke. It was just a joke,
- 21:24because there's more sexual innuendo with the girls' names. in Bond films. Well, to be fair, yeah.
- 21:30Pussy Galore. Yeah. And Holly Goodhead. That's my point.
- 21:34I was saying this was just a smarter way of... Giving her a name.
- 21:37Playing with the names of the characters.
- 21:39Yeah. Holly Goodhead is the infamous one from Moonraker.
- 21:42Okay, so you get my point. Yeah. I was trying to say. Pussy Galore.
- 21:45Okay, catch up here. Come on, Bronco.
- 21:47Catch up. Yeah, I'm just defending Bond here because I'm a bit of a James Bond myself.
- 21:51I love James Bond. I have nothing against James Bond.
- 21:54You're completely misreading everything I'm saying.
- 21:57Nope. Which is not uncommon to you, so, you know. Well.
- 22:04See? But yes, the Austrian Chancellor, again, this is where the IMF guys feel.
- 22:10Who are off the grid, by the way, you know, after sort of Alec Baldwin has essentially disbanded them.
- 22:16But yes, the Austrian Chancellor, they get him. Lian gets him in a car bomb anyway.
- 22:22Yeah, I mean, well, the whole thing was moot. And the whole thing wasn't because of assassination.
- 22:29Doesn't Ethan say, Lane knew we were going to be there? Yes. He wanted us to be there.
- 22:36The Chancellor was dead no matter what we did. It's a game of chess,
- 22:39this entire film. Yeah, it was a bait.
- 22:41They were baiting it then. Yeah, this whole film is a game of chess between Lane and Hunt.
- 22:46And in fact, it's pretty much confirmed by the two of them at the end,
- 22:50you know, whenever he's got Benji, you know, with the bomb strapped to him.
- 22:54Yeah. I love my gadgets, and I love my sequences.
- 22:57The one thing Mission Impossible 3 never had was where, even though it was a
- 23:01pretty fun film, they never showed you how they were going to get.
- 23:05They gave you the A to C, but they never gave you the B.
- 23:07These guys give you the B, and it's going to involve Benji. And I love this
- 23:11whole sequence where you got to get the fingerprint, you got the free locks,
- 23:15they have to get a mask on. Yes.
- 23:16And now these motion-capturing security alarm.
- 23:19So when he walks in, he's got to have the exact same movements as this man.
- 23:24He's going to be betraying at the same time Luther has to upload the.
- 23:33Hit Benji's movements into their computer to make it, you know,
- 23:37The other guy's movements. Yeah, overriding the other guys. You got it. Yeah.
- 23:41And at the same time, then you got Elsa and Tom, Elsa and Tom,
- 23:45Elsa and Ethan, and this whole underwater thing is fucking brilliant.
- 23:49Again, that harks back to the, the, how unsettling I found, you know,
- 23:56Tom Cruise hanging off the building in the previous film.
- 23:59That whole underwater claustrophobia about to drown shit, I find that quite
- 24:06unsettling as well, but really well done.
- 24:10You know what worked? What's the sound effects? And the reason I say that,
- 24:13when he drops into the water, he's got three minutes.
- 24:16Yes. But what happens is he loses one of the ID cards. He's got to shuffle them
- 24:20around and he starts to panic.
- 24:22If you start to panic, you lose more oxygen. Yeah.
- 24:25I think... And so... Yeah. But what they use though, it's pretty much a silent
- 24:30film when he's under the water.
- 24:32All you hear is the of that thing wishing past him,
- 24:37but then you also have this little heartbeat
- 24:40in the background monitoring his heartbeat
- 24:43and it starts getting slower and slower through this
- 24:46whole sequence it's really cool and I love the fact all of a sudden Ilsa shows
- 24:51up the grapple it's so good oh no no it's really well done you know very tensely
- 24:58done I mean obviously you know he's going to escape in the end but it still,
- 25:03it works very very well but yeah,
- 25:06being forced underwater heights and being buried alive there,
- 25:11my three big fears so in this new one coming out, Mr.
- 25:14Cruz you better not fucking do a buried alive scene, seriously you know massive
- 25:19underwater scene, submarines and all that right, you're right so this is where Elsa portrays him.
- 25:25But saves him at the same time and she takes the bike And then we get a fucking
- 25:31great, great chase scene.
- 25:33And I love when you got Brandt and Luther and Brandt starts yelling at Luther.
- 25:37You had to get an SUV. Yeah. Yeah.
- 25:40We have, we have to, we have to, we have to, we have to, we have to do a car
- 25:42chase and you pick an SUV. Yeah.
- 25:45Well, they, they, that's because I like those two for the first time together
- 25:49in the franchise, they got really good chemistry.
- 25:52Yeah. Bring Reigns and Jerry Reigns. They're almost like the sort of comedy
- 25:56side kicks, but they work well and they work well together.
- 25:58Yeah. I love the fact when Benji and Ethan's car just quadruple flips.
- 26:06Yes. And they're like, what's going on? And then you see this bicyclist getting
- 26:08on from, you just see the feet of the bicyclist coming toward the car to kill them.
- 26:14Yeah. And then you see the SUV just run them over.
- 26:17At sea of some, yeah, yeah, exactly. But again, this bike, and I don't know
- 26:22how Tom Cruise learns all this shit.
- 26:23He's no helmet. He's like, I'm getting on the bike.
- 26:26And this whole thing is just so fun and smooth.
- 26:31You know what? They used to do action films, and they did it with Jason Bourne's,
- 26:35and I thought they were kind of sloppy.
- 26:36As great as the movies are, I just think some of the action scenes become really choppy.
- 26:41Yeah. And you're like, and you're like, what's going on here?
- 26:45They're action sequences. The way these are set up, the way they're stylized,
- 26:48the stump coordinator, fucking genius, whoever he is. Oh, no, they're great.
- 26:53And this is a perfect- So smooth. And this is a perfect example of practical
- 26:58stunts and effects over CGI any day of the week. I mean, this is great.
- 27:05You know, this is the way it should be.
- 27:07Proper. I mean, Tom Cruise, is he even credited as a stuntman? He should be.
- 27:11He's like, he is, you know, great. And you know this is real.
- 27:15You know that's him on the motorbike. There's no green screen.
- 27:18There's no CGI bullshit. you know that and that
- 27:21adds to the tension and the drama as an audience
- 27:24member watching it because you know that this is legit
- 27:27you know obviously it's you know fiction but it's
- 27:30it's still crews doing the batshit crazy in
- 27:34this case motorbike stunts you know um i know you like your your bask sequences
- 27:39and this one's kind of subtle but it's so good when brilliant they have to go
- 27:43to the they have to go to the prime minister yeah and let them know what's happening
- 27:47with the rogue agent Lane and so forth and this whole conversation and then you have Huntley,
- 27:53Huntley's back Alec Baldwin's there and you have Brant and they're all,
- 27:57they're trying to let everyone know that we need and then the PM walks in and you realize,
- 28:05it's Ethan Hunt.
- 28:08Behind the mask I didn't catch that when I first saw it, it wasn't obvious at all Oh no,
- 28:13it's very well done it's great to see the masks back properly but also Huntley
- 28:18You think that Brandt has sort of portrayed Hunt by getting Hunley on board
- 28:23for this meeting, you know, with the Prime Minister and Attlee.
- 28:26But, you know, little does he know that Attlee is actually Tom Cruise in a mask,
- 28:31you know. But yeah, it's very well done.
- 28:34Yeah, because they just, and the whole thing was just to get his voice recognition.
- 28:37Yes, that's right. Yeah.
- 28:40See, just get one thing, they have to go through all this.
- 28:43That's what's cool about it. Yep, again it goes
- 28:46back to it feeling like a proper spy thriller espionage All
- 28:49the stuff with Attlee whenever he double crosses Elsa and stuff By deleting
- 28:53the file from the phone that she's retrieved Which is supposed to contain the
- 28:59list of the members of the syndicate But it's actually really bank details for
- 29:03two point some billion dollars to fund the syndicate But yeah it's just proper espionage.
- 29:11On the flip side of that, as you have, during this whole sequence,
- 29:16Humley's witnessing what these guys do.
- 29:18Instead of berating him in front of Congress or the Senate, wherever he is,
- 29:23he actually sees what these guys do.
- 29:26And this is where he starts coming on board with IMF.
- 29:30But to flip that, the next scene, you have Attlee.
- 29:33He's one of the heads of MI6. Yes.
- 29:37And he's talking to Ilsa. This is where we find out he pretty much threatens Ilsa.
- 29:41He says, you're not coming back to us. You need to go back to him with the drive.
- 29:46But what Atlee's done is he's deleted the drive on her. So what's she supposed to go back with?
- 29:55Exactly. Because once she shows Lane the drive, she's fucked.
- 30:00Now, that's what I don't get. Why is she not dead?
- 30:03Why is she not dead? Yes. Yes. Because he tests the drive and gives her the okay.
- 30:08Why does not why does not Lane there
- 30:11is a bit of a one or two line fix with the
- 30:14whole he should have killed her at the start for betraying
- 30:18him with you know whenever Tom Cruise is imprisoned in
- 30:21the dungeon and she helps Tom Cruise then they
- 30:25don't know that actually that one gets a pass because they don't know she did
- 30:29that aye but he but Lane's not stupid you know what I mean he's a very smart
- 30:33guy so he would have no one and in fact it's pretty much admitted later on and
- 30:38there are a couple of one line fixes where she says something like yeah basically.
- 30:46This is the last straw with Lane and me you
- 30:49know what I mean he knows I'm fucking about but he wants me to get you Hunt
- 30:52and this is like my last chance type thing with Lane so he knows but yeah how
- 30:58many last chances is she going to get by him because he is cold and calculating
- 31:02and he shows no mercy with everybody else so yes that is a bit of a plot convenience.
- 31:09So to get what he needs, obviously he kidnaps Benji, right?
- 31:13Yes. Again, I like the scenes, kind of like what we just saw with the Prime
- 31:16Minister in the big party bash.
- 31:18They have to be very quiet and reserved, even though things can get really ugly.
- 31:23Yes. Same thing in this scene. And he got the most likable character in the entire franchise.
- 31:28Yeah, Benji. Yeah, Simon Pegg.
- 31:30Yeah, in a vulnerable situation. And it's in a crowded area.
- 31:35Yes. so the conversation like you mentioned earlier it's very cat and mouse
- 31:40but like chess yeah exactly,
- 31:44and one wrong move by any side and basically they lose but also the bomb goes
- 31:51off in terms of the good guys, Ethan Hunt and the team and there'd be loads
- 31:55of innocent victims not just Benji.
- 31:57See, I think this is where Lane fucks up because Lane's been smarter the whole
- 32:02time, but little things like thinking he's smarter than Ilsa and thinking he's smarter than the rest.
- 32:08He's the smartest guy in the room. He assumes that. But since he lets Ilsa go,
- 32:14his whole plan falls to shit. Yeah.
- 32:16Especially when you have Ethan talking to him through Benji going, fuck you.
- 32:23I'll give you the discs. You let Benji go right now.
- 32:27You don't hold the cards here. He pretty much plays his game.
- 32:30Yes. And Lane didn't see that.
- 32:32Lane gets sloppy. What I like about it is that his arrogance... Is his downfall.
- 32:39Yeah, his downfall. It's hubris, essentially. But with Tom Cruise,
- 32:45with Ethan Hunt, he also basically double-bluffs him and says,
- 32:51well, actually, I have the disc, the file is unimportant because I've memorized it all.
- 32:56Which is a big ask although that is acknowledged
- 32:59to memorize all of this in such a short time but yeah so basically in terms
- 33:06of wits it's about the wits Ethan Hunt gets the better of him and it's just
- 33:10enough and what he has done to Ethan Lane,
- 33:17what he has killing the other agent that was in the.
- 33:22Record shop to him being tortured to...
- 33:27He's one up, Ethan, this entire film.
- 33:30Yes. But now, Ethan's now because Lane has kind of showed his cards,
- 33:35I guess you could say, Ethan's taking advantage of that and now he can get revenge
- 33:39because you don't piss off Ethan Hunt.
- 33:41Yeah. And now this is his way of doing this. It's such a great battle of wits.
- 33:45Battle of wits would be a perfect way to describe it. Yeah. And.
- 33:49And then, obviously, a little more chaos, big chasing. Love the knife fight
- 33:53between Ilsa and Venter.
- 33:55Yes, and then we'll have the Tower of London. They're in the Tower of London
- 33:58as well, where they eventually capture Leon in quite a clever way.
- 34:04Yeah, but I like the fact they give Ilsa this big fight with the Bone Doctor
- 34:09because I felt that that was technically her adversary because she wound up
- 34:14him in the prison when she let Ethan go.
- 34:17Yes. So all the characters get their comeuppance through the act,
- 34:23through the person that they fucked over in the initial film.
- 34:26Does that make any sense?
- 34:27No, no, no. It's basically every character has a resolution to their personal
- 34:32story. You know, so yes, I like that.
- 34:35And also she's quite, you know, sometimes in some of these films you have a character,
- 34:40a female character, who'll be beating the
- 34:43absolute shit out of basically these guys
- 34:47who are about man mountains who are about five times
- 34:50the size as them but here it's very well done because
- 34:53Elsa is actually well obviously she's pretty good at all the sort of self defence
- 34:59stuff and all as well but she's also very clever she's quite cunning you know
- 35:03and she knows how to outwit him more than outpower him in terms of strength
- 35:09because obviously he's much bigger than her So I like that.
- 35:13Yeah, he wraps her legs around him. Yeah. I wish I was him.
- 35:18Well, Karen, you would die with a smile on your face. It would be worth it.
- 35:23You know, Rebecca Ferguson wrapping her legs around your neck and then killing you.
- 35:28I'm okay with that. Yeah. It'd be like, what is it? The praying mantis?
- 35:34Yeah, exactly. After you have yum-yum time, the woman just kills you.
- 35:38Yeah, well, yeah. yeah you'd be
- 35:41happy enough with that i'm sure i'm all right be all
- 35:44worth it be worth it so weird there you go i
- 35:48do love the eye for an eye i love i love i remember
- 35:51seeing this in theater when he goes after a hunt and he
- 35:54slides in that little hole and it ends up being a glass cage yeah it's a trap
- 35:58and they knock him out like he like he did to ethan at the start and and the
- 36:03way sean harris sells a lane is how it's just he's shooting he's he's and he's
- 36:07so calm about he's but you can see him because Sean Harris has this way of,
- 36:12He's a sociopath, yeah. He's a sociopath, yeah, but he doesn't get violently aggressive. Yes.
- 36:18You can see in his face and eyes, and he's trying to shoot through the glass. It's cold. Yeah.
- 36:24And then he finally knows he's been, they got him, and he's just looking right at him.
- 36:30Yeah. Before he says, fuck it, you got me, and he just looks at him like,
- 36:33I'm going to do it. And you know the look Sean Harris gives him is like,
- 36:36I'll be back, and he does come back.
- 36:38Yeah. But it's Sean Harris. Sean Harris is very good at this.
- 36:41And really much, Sean Harris did a film a couple years back,
- 36:44and it's fucking depressing, but it's brilliant.
- 36:47It's about a soldier who comes back from the war during the Afghan war,
- 36:53whatever war it was. Right, yeah.
- 36:55And he goes, and he's from a small town. He's a recluse, very quiet man.
- 36:58He really feels sorry for the character.
- 37:01And how he's just not adapting back to the small town. Yeah, Sebi Street, yeah.
- 37:07Doesn't really respect him. and he ends up killing everybody.
- 37:10Right. He goes in, grabs his gun, and he starts killing everybody in the town.
- 37:16It's soul-destroying to watch, but his performance is amazing.
- 37:19Oh, no, it's great. It's one of those characters where you kind of wanted to
- 37:21hug him and go, stop what you're doing. We'll try to get you help.
- 37:24Yeah, yeah. But it's wonderful. You should check it out. I can't remember.
- 37:29No, I'll check it out. I'll look it up. It came out a couple of years ago.
- 37:33It was on the BBC, I think it was.
- 37:36Uh but he started he started his career in Neighbors I know I'm only joking
- 37:40fuck off that I know so I do like the fact in the beginning of the film you had,
- 37:45Hunley trying to get rid of the IMF, including the last one,
- 37:51and him and Brant were having words.
- 37:53And they find out that the only one who could disband the IMF is the second,
- 37:57or bring back the IMF, is the Secretary.
- 37:59Secretary of State, I believe it is. Maybe I'm wrong. Well, he's a CIA guy.
- 38:03Yeah, whoever is the Secretary.
- 38:05I believe, I'm pretty confident it's the Secretary of State.
- 38:08But anyways, but at the end, I love the scene.
- 38:11It doesn't end with Ethan Hunt, which I like. It actually ends with Brant and
- 38:15Hunley, and they're walking down the hallway, and all Brant says is, welcome to the IMF, Mr.
- 38:22Secretary, because we didn't know the whole time that he was actually been promoted,
- 38:27so he has the right now to reinstate the IMF.
- 38:30Yes, he basically, the humbly character essentially goes on the journey where
- 38:35he realizes that actually IMF are actually the good guys and are doing great work.
- 38:39So I got it wrong and he swallows his pride and he says, yeah, let's bring them back.
- 38:45He fights for them to get brought back. But not only that, he then becomes their boss as well.
- 38:50So there you go. Dylan, Dylan.
- 38:54Right. So like the worst version of the theme tune ever. No,
- 38:58no. Hans Zimmer's version was the worst.
- 39:01Well, it was better than that shit.
- 39:04He sent fucking maracas in it and shit. Terrible. Yours was just a noise,
- 39:10you know? It was good. You know?
- 39:11All right, right? All right, guys. Listen, thanks for giving us a shout.

- 39:50to us and they don't listen to us in a sink, and they go, I'm not a half-pound
- 39:54of a hitcher. I'm not going to listen to that.
- 39:56They're going to listen to what I just said and go, what the fuck did that even mean?

- 40:50Yeah. We'll see you for the next mission. You know, there you go.
- 40:53Yeah. I hope you choose not to accept it.
- 40:58Well, you'll be on your own now. Yeah. Hi, Kieran. Hey, Kieran.
- 41:01What's up? Kieran's lost the plot.
- 41:05You're going to gag Rebecca Ferguson, but anyway. Wow. But now,
- 41:08now, now people are going to listen to this.
- 41:09No, people are just going to listen to that. They're going to listen to that
- 41:11and go, oh God, we got to call the, uh, I mean, you know what's funny?
- 41:14I'm going to have the fucking police knocking on my door.
- 41:16You have IMF knocking on your door, Benji and the gang. That'd be cool.
- 41:19You know? Can I get autographs?
- 41:22That wouldn't be cool for you. Guys, take care of yourselves.
- 41:25Fuck. Idiot. All right. Hey.
- 41:28Music.
