- 1:47Speaker 4: way because yeah, but there's gonna be a Southern wage.
- 1:50Speaker 4: But that Southern wadge is gonna bring ice with it then,
- 1:52Speaker 4: so it ain't. It ain't gonna be pretty our big

- 1:59Speaker 4: all right, so we'll get into wey. They're coming up
- 2:02Speaker 4: a little bit later on Also EMMITTT. Pepper, he is

- 2:08Speaker 4: heard on Daniel's newscaster. There's a lot of big news
- 2:11Speaker 4: coming out of Charleston here asqual particularly in the Caaanas
- 2:13Speaker 4: City area. Emmittt serves as at large council members, so
- 2:16Speaker 4: he's going to join us a little bit later on

- 2:20Speaker 4: if he's going to be running for reelection for a

- 2:23Speaker 4: later on. As always, your calls and Texter welcome, big Ley,
- 2:26Speaker 4: Pigley Wiggily Hotline three zero four three four five fifty
- 2:28Speaker 4: eight fifty eight. Tony the Taylor text three zero four
- 2:31Speaker 4: nine three five five zero zero eight the voice you
- 2:34Speaker 4: heard the lovely golden tones of one Roberts q reel.
- 2:39Speaker 2: Yes, Robert's the middle name.
- 2:40Speaker 6: Okay, I know, and I'm not gonna I'm not going
- 2:43Speaker 6: to share what the first name is because the only
- 2:46Speaker 6: people who addressed me by my first name want money.
- 2:50Speaker 5: So okay.
- 2:51Speaker 6: It's actually a really good barometer for the screening phone calls.
- 2:54Speaker 4: If somebody calls and says, yes, I want to speak
- 2:56Speaker 4: to Ferdinand, which by the way, is your real name, maybe.
- 2:58Speaker 2: We speak to Cornelius. I know you may not, he's
- 3:00Speaker 2: not here.
- 3:01Speaker 4: I'm just making that up. I make it up everything.
- 3:03Speaker 4: He has a different first name every time I'm here.
- 3:05Speaker 4: So Robrial from a sister station ninety six to one
- 3:08Speaker 4: KWS is here and to bring a little you know,
- 3:12Speaker 4: common sense in the program, Jason Quintrell, Co Minnion Mission
- 3:15Speaker 4: is here as well. Morning Jason, how are you doing?
- 3:16Speaker 5: I'm doing fine?
- 3:17Speaker 2: How are you?
- 3:18Speaker 5: I'm doing great?
- 3:18Speaker 4: Of course, you guys are here for the third annual
- 3:21Speaker 4: WVRC Media Charleston Sock Drop kicked it off at seven
- 3:25Speaker 4: a m. This morning, going till six o'clock tonight panhandle
- 3:28Speaker 4: cleaning and restoration, making it possible appreciate those folks.
- 3:31Speaker 5: Rob, how's it gone so far?
- 3:33Speaker 6: We are flirting with eight hundred pairs so far, we're
- 3:36Speaker 6: off to a great start. I want to give a
- 3:39Speaker 6: specific shout out to Green Valley Church of God. She
- 3:42Speaker 6: showed up with three hundred pairs just on her own
- 3:45Speaker 6: in the middy, eight hundred pairs. Apparently they heard what
- 3:49Speaker 6: we had planned and they started collecting as a congregation
- 3:53Speaker 6: in a community and friends and such, and showed up
- 3:56Speaker 6: with three hundred pair this morning.
- 3:57Speaker 2: So we're off to a great start.
- 4:00Speaker 6: But as you know, in West Virginia, it's going to
- 4:01Speaker 6: be a long winter, so it's going to be a
- 4:03Speaker 6: long day for us until six pm. Whether it's a
- 4:06Speaker 6: pair or a package, a bag, a box, a bin
- 4:09Speaker 6: full of socks, whatever your budget and your heart will allow.
- 4:14Speaker 6: You know, maybe you team up at work and you
- 4:16Speaker 6: take a collection and you can bring us cash or
- 4:18Speaker 6: check donation for union mission. Absolutely, that would work great.
- 4:21Speaker 6: I know you all got great bulk buying power with that.
- 4:24Speaker 6: If you know, if you want to swing through the
- 4:25Speaker 6: store and buy a bunch with that collection, that works too.
- 4:30Speaker 6: But come see us eleven eleven Virginia Street East before
- 4:33Speaker 6: six o'clock to see.
- 4:34Speaker 4: And of course everybody's going to be out and about buying,
- 4:36Speaker 4: as Rob calls it to Jason, their French toast kits,
- 4:39Speaker 4: you know, the eggs, the milk and the bread.
- 4:41Speaker 7: Yes.
- 4:42Speaker 4: Actually I was getting text to the show, to the
- 4:44Speaker 4: midday show yesterday. There was one person that text the
- 4:46Speaker 4: show and he said, just want to let you know
- 4:48Speaker 4: my girlfriend works at Walmart. And I don't know what
- 4:50Speaker 4: city they were calling front or texting from, but yeah,
- 4:53Speaker 4: it was a madhouse there yesterday.
- 4:55Speaker 5: And it's only going to and I only.
- 4:56Speaker 4: Say that to say chances are preparing for snow again
- 5:00Speaker 4: this weekend. People are going to be out and about
- 5:02Speaker 4: any way. So if you get done with your fist
- 5:05Speaker 4: fights over you know, the forty eight loaves of bread
- 5:07Speaker 4: that you think that you needed your local Kroger store,
- 5:09Speaker 4: swing on odor over to the Big Lots or the
- 5:11Speaker 4: Dollar Tree or the Dollar Store, whatever, whatever your favorite
- 5:14Speaker 4: story is, to pick up some socks.
- 5:15Speaker 8: Absolutely, we got many guys that are shelter that could
- 5:18Speaker 8: use them. We will share them all over with folks
- 5:22Speaker 8: and other shelters. And it's a great opportunity to help
- 5:27Speaker 8: your folks in need.
- 5:28Speaker 4: And that's one of the things I wanted because people,
- 5:30Speaker 4: you know, we've given us a lot of coverage on
- 5:32Speaker 4: our network show in the afternoon as well, and people
- 5:34Speaker 4: have said, well, you know that's a that's a Charleston thing,
- 5:37Speaker 4: and that's all well and good, But you guys work
- 5:40Speaker 4: with a lot that we saw it during the flood recovery.
- 5:43Speaker 5: I mean, we don't stop at borders, absolutely not.
- 5:46Speaker 8: We just like our Thanksgiving and Christmas, we we handled
- 5:50Speaker 8: fifteen different counties around us with food. Anywhere from seventy
- 5:53Speaker 8: to eighty thousand pounds of food goes out of our warehouse.
- 5:56Speaker 8: A month, and no, it's it's we do a lot
- 5:59Speaker 8: in Kanau Valley, but we also do a lot in
- 6:00Speaker 8: West Virginia.
- 6:01Speaker 2: Union Mission.
- 6:02Speaker 6: It's it's kind of a two layer organization. They're doing
- 6:04Speaker 6: all of those local things and then also working as
- 6:08Speaker 6: a clearing house when you think of when you think
- 6:11Speaker 6: of organizations like the United Way that connect people with
- 6:14Speaker 6: all sorts of different services. That's a lot of what
- 6:17Speaker 6: Union is Mission. Union Mission is doing region wide and statewide.
- 6:21Speaker 6: So even if you're in Bluefield or Bridgeports, you are
- 6:26Speaker 6: still going to be helping folks in your area when
- 6:28Speaker 6: you help with Union Mission and help with.
- 6:30Speaker 2: Drop your socks.
- 6:31Speaker 4: To and Jason talk about the need for the socks,
- 6:34Speaker 4: and Rob has talked about it, but let's talk about
- 6:37Speaker 4: why socks.
- 6:38Speaker 8: Well, I mean just a just a simple need. We
- 6:41Speaker 8: don't really think about it much. We get up in
- 6:43Speaker 8: the morning, we jump in the shower, we get out,
- 6:45Speaker 8: and we put socks on and get dressed and come
- 6:47Speaker 8: to work.
- 6:48Speaker 5: But and sometimes pants well that's optional.
- 6:50Speaker 2: Yeah, but yeah, check your local listings.
- 6:52Speaker 8: Yes, but yeah, I mean, we don't think much about it,
- 6:55Speaker 8: but there are people out there that they are in
- 6:57Speaker 8: genuine need for socks. They're in genuine need for just
- 7:02Speaker 8: basic items in life, and that's definitely a big part
- 7:05Speaker 8: of it, and we want to be a part of that.
- 7:07Speaker 8: And we take our hats off salute you guys for
- 7:10Speaker 8: having a burden for people that are in need for
- 7:13Speaker 8: those things.
- 7:13Speaker 5: So shout out to you guys.
- 7:15Speaker 8: Thank you so much for doing this, and it gives
- 7:17Speaker 8: us an opportunity to help folks in need.
- 7:19Speaker 4: And we had rob before we even started this thing
- 7:22Speaker 4: at seven o'clock. We had people throughout the week stopping by, Yes,
- 7:25Speaker 4: our office is here and saying, you know, I can't
- 7:27Speaker 4: make it on Thursday. They've reached out to us on
- 7:30Speaker 4: social media saying, hey, I'm going to can I drop
- 7:32Speaker 4: When we first started talking about this a month ago,
- 7:35Speaker 4: immediately people said, well, I don't know if I'm to
- 7:37Speaker 4: be able to make it that day, or maybe they
- 7:38Speaker 4: didn't know what the weather was going to be and
- 7:40Speaker 4: they just dropped off bags of socks.
- 7:43Speaker 6: I think our early morning steak was one hundred and
- 7:45Speaker 6: fifty when we got rolled in this morning.
- 7:47Speaker 2: Yeah, when we opened to.
- 7:49Speaker 6: The parking lot eleven eleven Virginia Street East closest Cross Street,
- 7:52Speaker 6: Lee on Sullivan, we had one hundred and fifty to
- 7:56Speaker 6: get going this morning. So folks were on board from
- 8:00Speaker 6: the very very beginning, and so it's not unbearably cold
- 8:05Speaker 6: this morning, but that wind is really cutting through you,
- 8:07Speaker 6: and it's it's a reminder for me that when my
- 8:10Speaker 6: feet get cold, other parts of my body, particularly my brain,
- 8:13Speaker 6: starts shutting down. I lose fifty IQ points if my
- 8:16Speaker 6: feet are cold, and I can't afford.
- 8:18Speaker 5: To lose people in radio can't afford to lose that.
- 8:20Speaker 6: You know, at this point, I'm a talking monkey, so
- 8:24Speaker 6: and I'm somebody who can I can come in here
- 8:26Speaker 6: to the studio at a space heater right by my desk,
- 8:28Speaker 6: I can heat myself back up. I live a couple
- 8:30Speaker 6: of blocks away. I can go home, change clothes, put
- 8:32Speaker 6: on more clothes. There are so many folks who don't
- 8:35Speaker 6: have that wherewithal it's not it is but not only
- 8:39Speaker 6: the displaced persons that you see around town. It is
- 8:42Speaker 6: also maybe that family who left a domestic violent situation
- 8:46Speaker 6: in the middle of the night with literally nothing but
- 8:48Speaker 6: the clothes.
- 8:48Speaker 2: On their back.
- 8:49Speaker 6: Maybe it's somebody who is living out of his or
- 8:51Speaker 6: her vehicle that is technically a displaced person, but not
- 8:54Speaker 6: somebody you're seeing on the street. Maybe it's somebody who's CouchSurfing.
- 8:58Speaker 6: There are so many folks. I think the number in
- 9:01Speaker 6: West Virginia is one out of three folks are right
- 9:05Speaker 6: around the poverty line or worse, and about half of
- 9:08Speaker 6: those are living in deep poverty. So it is is
- 9:11Speaker 6: such a little thing we can be doing to make
- 9:15Speaker 6: the lives better, one tiny need we can fulfill to
- 9:18Speaker 6: maybe help that person get the next step.
- 9:20Speaker 8: And please don't think, well, you've got eight hundred pair,
- 9:23Speaker 8: you're doing great, you don't need me.
- 9:25Speaker 5: That's not true.
- 9:26Speaker 9: Me.
- 9:27Speaker 5: Certainly, we're gonna be doing this till six o'clock this evening.
- 9:30Speaker 5: Please come by. Eight hundreds not enough, we can use
- 9:33Speaker 5: two thousand.
- 9:33Speaker 4: Right, how many, roughly, Rob, do you remember how many
- 9:36Speaker 4: we did last year? I'm just a rough estimate.
- 9:38Speaker 6: I remember we were kind of keeping track in terms
- 9:40Speaker 6: of like fifty five gallon barrels the first year, and
- 9:43Speaker 6: we did almost four of those. And then last year
- 9:47Speaker 6: you've got kind of that big watermelon box in the
- 9:49Speaker 6: back of the truck that kind of fills up the truck.
- 9:51Speaker 6: We filled the truck what two or three times last year.
- 9:54Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm thinking it was twenty two hundred, twenty one
- 9:56Speaker 5: twenty something like that, and we're already off to a
- 9:58Speaker 5: good start.
- 9:59Speaker 6: Yeah, I'm saying my early morning goal is to have
- 10:03Speaker 6: have you have to run the truck back before lunch
- 10:06Speaker 6: to unload and fill it again.
- 10:08Speaker 2: So I love your goals.
- 10:11Speaker 6: I would love to do that before before the barbecue,
- 10:13Speaker 6: before Rolling Smoke shows.
- 10:14Speaker 4: Up, and talk about that here in a couple of
- 10:16Speaker 4: moments to Dave Alan Show on five. Any Line brought
- 10:17Speaker 4: to you apart by Live Healthy West Virginia presented by
- 10:20Speaker 4: WVU Medisine, a podcast We're roading healthier lifestyles and to
- 10:23Speaker 4: beyond the stage. Check have of latest episodes wv metronews
- 10:25Speaker 4: dot com under the podcast mean You. And I want
- 10:27Speaker 4: to give a big shout out to the folks at
- 10:29Speaker 4: Rolling Smoke Barbecue because they follow our stations on social media.
- 10:33Speaker 4: They heard us talking about on all of our stations,
- 10:36Speaker 4: and the folks that Rolling Smoke said, we want to
- 10:38Speaker 4: help out. We want to provide you guys with lunch
- 10:41Speaker 4: because you guys are out there you and again, this
- 10:43Speaker 4: is something all of our stations are involved in. This
- 10:46Speaker 4: is Rob's baby, but all of our stations jumped in
- 10:48Speaker 4: on this. We'll have the sales weasels out there. We'll
- 10:51Speaker 4: have the office staff, we'll have anybody that we can
- 10:54Speaker 4: get sales. Yeah, we'll get that's a loving term. We'll
- 10:57Speaker 4: get everybody out there from the news department. We'll be
- 11:00Speaker 4: out there as well, all of us out there. And
- 11:01Speaker 4: the folks at Rolling Smoke reached out and they said,
- 11:03Speaker 4: we want to provide you lunch. Let me just tell
- 11:05Speaker 4: you a little something about Rolling Smoke voted by Southern
- 11:08Speaker 4: Living West Virginia as the best barbecue. Uh. They are
- 11:11Speaker 4: participating in Restaurant Week. There'll be a first time participant
- 11:16Speaker 4: in that.
- 11:16Speaker 2: Of course.
- 11:16Speaker 4: Restaurant Week runs in Charleston next week. Three courses for
- 11:20Speaker 4: twenty five bucks.
- 11:23Speaker 5: And uh, and I'm.
- 11:23Speaker 4: Always rob you're a world traveler. Uh. Is it pronounced
- 11:28Speaker 4: wag you or wagu wag you wag you wag you
- 11:31Speaker 4: slow smoke briskets.
- 11:33Speaker 6: That's that's the Japanese beef, the high falut and Jackpannese.
- 11:37Speaker 4: Yes, with the pork butt barbecue. And of course you
- 11:40Speaker 4: can dine in there. You can pick up they do
- 11:42Speaker 4: catering as well. Three zero four nine six five zero
- 11:45Speaker 4: eight zero eight three zero four nine six five zero
- 11:48Speaker 4: eight zero eight. So I want to give a big
- 11:49Speaker 4: shout out to them as well.
- 11:50Speaker 6: You put you put a plate of that wag you
- 11:52Speaker 6: brisket on top of your head, your tongue, beat your
- 11:54Speaker 6: brains out trying to get to it.
- 11:56Speaker 5: All right, that's good stuff. That's good stuff. It is
- 11:58Speaker 5: very good stuff.
- 11:58Speaker 4: We appreciate for reaching out because again they we didn't ask.
- 12:03Speaker 4: They contacted us and they said, hey, we want to
- 12:05Speaker 4: provide lunch for your crew, and so we said, we'll
- 12:07Speaker 4: take it.
- 12:07Speaker 6: Well, and it's in each according to our gifts. Sort
- 12:10Speaker 6: of a situation. We're not gonna we WVRC media. We
- 12:14Speaker 6: don't try to sort and distribute the socks. That's why
- 12:16Speaker 6: we bring in Union mission. You are the experts at this.
- 12:19Speaker 6: We are the experts at motivating, at using the big
- 12:23Speaker 6: mouths and big microphones, rolling smoke. They're not going to
- 12:26Speaker 6: collect socks, they're not going to market it. They're the
- 12:28Speaker 6: experts at food. How do we how do we get
- 12:30Speaker 6: involved in this? We make food to keep the people
- 12:32Speaker 6: fed so that they can do all the work on
- 12:34Speaker 6: the parking lot.
- 12:35Speaker 2: Pretty cool.
- 12:37Speaker 6: It's amazing to me and yet never surprising the way
- 12:41Speaker 6: West Virginians come through for West Virginians.
- 12:43Speaker 2: Each according to our gifts.
- 12:45Speaker 5: Always take care of each other.
- 12:46Speaker 4: Indeed, we had a text here is there a venmo
- 12:49Speaker 4: for sock money for those not in Charleston.
- 12:51Speaker 8: No, but you can go to we feed people dot
- 12:53Speaker 8: com and you can click the donate now button and
- 12:56Speaker 8: you can mark that four socks and we will sure
- 12:59Speaker 8: to go buy socks for you.
- 13:01Speaker 4: We feed people dot Com. And Rob has brought this
- 13:03Speaker 4: up ever since we've been talking about Jason. We appreciate
- 13:06Speaker 4: the donations of socks and we don't care as long
- 13:08Speaker 4: as they're new, whether you bring in two pairs or
- 13:11Speaker 4: you bring in boxes or like the lady from the
- 13:13Speaker 4: church did early, whatever, we'll take it. But sometimes with
- 13:16Speaker 4: you guys in these type of organizations, Rob has said
- 13:18Speaker 4: it before, your buying power can be a little bit greater.
- 13:21Speaker 4: So sometimes cash and checks are actually better.
- 13:23Speaker 8: Absolutely, if you want to, you can. You can call
- 13:25Speaker 8: in nine two five zero three sixty six. You can
- 13:28Speaker 8: do it that way. Uh, Like I said, you can
- 13:30Speaker 8: go we feed people dot com, click on the donate
- 13:32Speaker 8: now button and take care of it that way as well.
- 13:34Speaker 4: All right, Uh, and again this is going on six
- 13:37Speaker 4: o'clock tonight, big shout out to Panhandle Cleaning and Restoration.
- 13:40Speaker 4: They do so much for the state of West Virginia.
- 13:43Speaker 4: And they're not just I mean they're all over the place.
- 13:45Speaker 4: I mean there, they got locations in Florida and so
- 13:47Speaker 4: on and so forth. So, uh, but we appreciate them
- 13:49Speaker 4: for getting involved with this problem.
- 13:51Speaker 6: They're gonna come in handy, I think for somebody with
- 13:52Speaker 6: this winter storm that's gonna come through, because eventually it's
- 13:55Speaker 6: all gonna melt. Yeah, And you know, I think about
- 13:59Speaker 6: the we're only good be in for a couple of days.
- 14:01Speaker 6: This this it's gonna be a bad storm, but it's
- 14:03Speaker 6: not gonna hang around for forever. And we're not gonna
- 14:05Speaker 6: be trapped. You don't need forty eight loaves of bread.
- 14:08Speaker 6: But uh, you know, some folks are gonna they're gonna
- 14:12Speaker 6: lose power, They're gonna have pipes freeze, things are gonna bust,
- 14:16Speaker 6: and Panhandle Cleaning and Restoration can come in and help
- 14:18Speaker 6: you clean up from that. I'm just thinking about if
- 14:22Speaker 6: like a plumbing freezes up in my building and I
- 14:24Speaker 6: can't take a shower, I'll go over to Union Mission.
- 14:25Speaker 2: I know I can get a shower there. For you.
- 14:27Speaker 4: Yeah, I wouldn't invite you to my house, but we moved. Yeah,
- 14:30Speaker 4: so we didn't move. Actually, all right, Rob, I appreciate
- 14:34Speaker 4: you being here. Jason as always, and again we're gonna

- 18:28Speaker 4: It's good stuff, man, I mean I've had they, They've
- 18:31Speaker 4: catered a couple of events here for us before. And
- 18:34Speaker 4: you don't hear me say this a lot when it
- 18:38Speaker 4: comes to barbecue or any restaurant.
- 18:40Speaker 5: Their sides are as good as the meats.
- 18:42Speaker 4: Oh yeah, and because to me quality barbecue restaurants, I
- 18:46Speaker 4: judge you on the sides as well. The meats are
- 18:48Speaker 4: always good, and that's what I like, but I like
- 18:49Speaker 4: the side and their side dishes are incredible.
- 18:51Speaker 10: Well, as I was a vegetarian for a while, and
- 18:54Speaker 10: so you know, I got this. The barbecue restaurants were
- 18:57Speaker 10: only sides for me for a long time.
- 18:58Speaker 2: So I have a good appreciation too.
- 19:00Speaker 4: So you were a vegetarian for a while, yeah, well
- 19:02Speaker 4: it's pescatarian, so you know, okay, what's a pest fish
- 19:06Speaker 4: and nothing?
- 19:07Speaker 2: No other meat?
- 19:07Speaker 4: Okay, because there's various and this is not why there's
- 19:11Speaker 4: various things. I mean you have people that are you know,
- 19:14Speaker 4: don't use animal products at all, and no eggs, no cheese, no, no, nothing,
- 19:19Speaker 4: they're a communist.
- 19:20Speaker 2: I'm kidding.
- 19:21Speaker 1: Uh.
- 19:21Speaker 4: And then there's those that just don't eat red meat,
- 19:24Speaker 4: and this shows that don't eat meat, meat the vegetables.
- 19:26Speaker 2: So you were pescatarian, I was, I was.
- 19:28Speaker 10: Yeah, but at the church it's next door to that
- 19:30Speaker 10: straight yeah, yeah, pescatarian Presbyteria.
- 19:33Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 19:33Speaker 4: Okay, I got it, I got it, I got it.
- 19:35Speaker 4: So all right, so you're running for reelection? Are you
- 19:37Speaker 4: running for relation? I should ask? I am, and some
- 19:40Speaker 4: anno make.
- 19:41Speaker 5: The official statement.
- 19:43Speaker 2: Now, guys upstairs, hit record, Emmitt Pepper.
- 19:48Speaker 10: I'm running for the at large city councils, one of
- 19:51Speaker 10: six at large city council seats.
- 19:53Speaker 5: All right, So and how many terms have you, sir?
- 19:55Speaker 2: One? Uh? One and change? Okay, so this will be
- 19:58Speaker 2: your second the full term. I get second, full, third,
- 20:01Speaker 2: you know, third term. You know I came in under
- 20:03Speaker 2: you know, sad circumstances. I was an appointed after John Kennedy, Billy.
- 20:06Speaker 4: Sure, yeah, yeah, and what a great what a great
- 20:08Speaker 4: gentleman he was absolutely and was a great loss for
- 20:10Speaker 4: the Charleston area. And you're in an at large seat, so
- 20:13Speaker 4: that means you get to hear from everybody, right.
- 20:14Speaker 2: That's right.
- 20:15Speaker 4: And I mean, to be fair, all members of city
- 20:18Speaker 4: councils still here from everybody, no matter what what you
- 20:21Speaker 4: can contact to, you know, whether it's your reward or not.
- 20:24Speaker 2: Right, that's that. I think that that definitely happens. Yeah, yeah,
- 20:27Speaker 2: for sure.
- 20:27Speaker 10: But I think the at large, you know, there's sometimes
- 20:29Speaker 10: we get copied on everything, okay, Yeah, So I mean
- 20:32Speaker 10: this is an opportunity for us, you know, to keep
- 20:34Speaker 10: the momentum going that we've that we've had and that
- 20:36Speaker 10: I've been working on for the last few seventh.
- 20:38Speaker 4: I'm going to talk about that momentum, yeah, in the
- 20:40Speaker 4: city of Charleston right now, because over the last couple
- 20:42Speaker 4: of years, I mean, there have been a lot of
- 20:44Speaker 4: great things have come. There's been business openings. The restaurants
- 20:48Speaker 4: that have come here are you know, unbelievable, and of
- 20:49Speaker 4: course the return of Regatta and things of that nature.
- 20:52Speaker 4: And there's always something going on in Charleston, especially as
- 20:56Speaker 4: we get to the warm weather months. I mean, there's
- 20:58Speaker 4: always a fun at the Dome, or there's always something
- 21:02Speaker 4: going on in the West End, or there's something going on,
- 21:04Speaker 4: and there's always something going on in Charleston.
- 21:08Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, And I think that that is.
- 21:10Speaker 10: I mean, so we you know, the goal I think
- 21:12Speaker 10: is to make this a place where you know, the
- 21:13Speaker 10: sit in the population which our state, our city has
- 21:16Speaker 10: been losing population for our entire lifetimes, you know, and
- 21:19Speaker 10: so we really need to reverse that trend. My friend
- 21:22Speaker 10: Jennifer Farre also at Large, you know, she says we
- 21:24Speaker 10: want to have add ten thousand and twenty thousand people.
- 21:27Speaker 10: I'd be happy with flat you know stuff, just not
- 21:29Speaker 10: to lose that's right. The way that we're going to
- 21:32Speaker 10: do that is, you know, a few thinks that one
- 21:34Speaker 10: is going to be jobs. People live in a place
- 21:35Speaker 10: because they have a job. People live in a place
- 21:37Speaker 10: because they have connections, family, friends, that kind of thing,
- 21:41Speaker 10: and they live in a place because they like it.
- 21:43Speaker 10: And so you know, so having you know, we can't
- 21:46Speaker 10: mean we have to. We can do everything we can
- 21:48Speaker 10: to help make it so that job creators folks can
- 21:51Speaker 10: can make it work here.
- 21:53Speaker 2: But we can't.
- 21:53Speaker 10: You know, we can't create the jobs ourselves through government,
- 21:56Speaker 10: but we can make it easier for folks to survive.
- 21:59Speaker 10: We can make it so that there are more of
- 22:01Speaker 10: those third spaces and make which which also plays into
- 22:04Speaker 10: you know, both having the connections, having uh, friends and
- 22:07Speaker 10: family and also making it a place you want to live.
- 22:10Speaker 5: What was it? Now, are you a native Charlestonian?
- 22:13Speaker 2: I yes, I was born and raised here.
- 22:15Speaker 5: Okay, all right? But what made you stay? Because here's
- 22:17Speaker 5: the here's the problem.
- 22:18Speaker 4: And when we talk about this a lot with various guests,
- 22:21Speaker 4: we have a real problem in West Virginia with getting
- 22:23Speaker 4: people to want to stay here, especially people that go
- 22:28Speaker 4: away to college, which you did, you know, of course,
- 22:31Speaker 4: but want to come back here. What was it about
- 22:33Speaker 4: Charleston that made Emmitt Pepper and family decide we want
- 22:38Speaker 4: to be here.
- 22:38Speaker 7: Yeah?
- 22:39Speaker 10: Well, I mean I moved away actually, so I'm you know,
- 22:40Speaker 10: one of the people. I moved away for quite some time.
- 22:42Speaker 10: I lived in the Northeast for about nine years, and
- 22:47Speaker 10: in between undergrad and law school, I was in DC
- 22:49Speaker 10: for law school.
- 22:50Speaker 2: So and then I moved back.
- 22:51Speaker 10: I mean, and you know, frankly, I mean the things
- 22:53Speaker 10: that move made me want to move back here were
- 22:56Speaker 10: family and my still have family in the area and
- 22:58Speaker 10: uh and I got a job here.
- 23:00Speaker 13: Uh.
- 23:00Speaker 10: And so you know, those are the things that that
- 23:02Speaker 10: that brought me back here. And I think that's what
- 23:04Speaker 10: brings people to a place, is that they have a connection,
- 23:07Speaker 10: and so you know, all the all the folks who
- 23:09Speaker 10: have moved away want to make it easier for them
- 23:10Speaker 10: to get back. But we also want to be attracting
- 23:13Speaker 10: people who don't necessarily have a connection to Here's a
- 23:15Speaker 10: lot of some of my favorite West Virginias are the
- 23:17Speaker 10: ones who have just moved here and they, uh, they
- 23:19Speaker 10: like it. And you know, from what I've heard, the
- 23:22Speaker 10: folks who have been visiting our city, uh, they just
- 23:24Speaker 10: have a great time here and they enjoy it.
- 23:27Speaker 2: But they just need to know that it's here.
- 23:28Speaker 5: What can we do to uh?
- 23:30Speaker 4: And and again we have we have great folks from
- 23:33Speaker 4: like the CVB and and and Charleston Urban Works of course,
- 23:36Speaker 4: with the with the Mayor's office and others and the
- 23:39Speaker 4: County Commission. So many people work together to try to
- 23:42Speaker 4: advertise uh, the city of Charleston, Kanawa County and and
- 23:46Speaker 4: all the West Virginia to the rest of the world.
- 23:48Speaker 5: What do we need to do more of?
- 23:49Speaker 10: In your opinion, yeah, I mean I think it is
- 23:51Speaker 10: just more of the same, you know, so we we
- 23:53Speaker 10: have been well, not more of the same for the
- 23:55Speaker 10: long term, but I do I do think there are
- 23:57Speaker 10: some things that we that I have personally working on
- 23:59Speaker 10: and this administration's been working on that. I think we
- 24:01Speaker 10: need to do more of. We need to be doing
- 24:03Speaker 10: more to kind of redevelop find you know, there's been
- 24:06Speaker 10: a lot of dilapidated properties that we have been demolished,
- 24:09Speaker 10: but now we're also working turning the corner and working
- 24:12Speaker 10: to get new construction. We've tripled more than tripled the
- 24:15Speaker 10: amount of new builds in the city just in the
- 24:18Speaker 10: through an incidentive program that we initiated, and we're about
- 24:20Speaker 10: to do a second round of that in the coming months.
- 24:24Speaker 10: You know, we need to be doing more of those
- 24:26Speaker 10: third spaces that I was talking about.
- 24:28Speaker 2: You know, the the city.
- 24:30Speaker 10: Center Sleck Plaza has truly transformed our downtown. We need
- 24:34Speaker 10: to also be investing into having a lot more parks
- 24:38Speaker 10: in our neighborhoods. I mean, that's one of the you know,
- 24:41Speaker 10: policies that I think is really important is to that
- 24:43Speaker 10: I was able to get through setting some goals for
- 24:46Speaker 10: having parks within walking distance of people's homes. Having seventy
- 24:50Speaker 10: five percent of our city live within a half while
- 24:52Speaker 10: walk of a home of a park. That is something
- 24:56Speaker 10: that helps people's way of life. It's not something that
- 24:58Speaker 10: people are calling me up to get, but they it
- 25:01Speaker 10: really makes their way of life better.
- 25:03Speaker 4: Well, And if you're going to attract young people, which
- 25:05Speaker 4: is what we want to do in West Virginia, we
- 25:07Speaker 4: want to attract younger people, and we want to attract families,
- 25:10Speaker 4: you know, we want to attract people that are going
- 25:12Speaker 4: to come here on the odd chance that maybe their
- 25:14Speaker 4: kids are going to want to stay here, and you're
- 25:16Speaker 4: going to give their kids something to do. Because you
- 25:18Speaker 4: talked about the jobs, and I agree with you on
- 25:21Speaker 4: that one hundred percent. But people only work so many
- 25:23Speaker 4: hours a day, you know. I mean people only work
- 25:25Speaker 4: in theory seven or eight hours a day. I remember
- 25:28Speaker 4: my first part time job too, but in theory. And
- 25:32Speaker 4: maybe they get a day off, they get weekends off.
- 25:34Speaker 4: So the job alone, I have always said, is not
- 25:37Speaker 4: It may attract you here, but you're not always at work,
- 25:40Speaker 4: you know. And the ability to work remotely, the ability
- 25:43Speaker 4: to have parks, to have recreation. This younger generation, statistically saying,
- 25:48Speaker 4: you know, it's statistically proven, are more about experiences. They
- 25:52Speaker 4: love the outdoors. I'm a fan of the great indoors, okay,
- 25:56Speaker 4: but they like the outdoors. They want to be able
- 25:58Speaker 4: and we're not Charleston.
- 25:59Speaker 5: We're not far.
- 26:00Speaker 4: I mean, you talk about the parks in the communities,
- 26:03Speaker 4: we're not far from the New River Gorge. Thinks we're
- 26:06Speaker 4: not far from some of these other places. Well, when
- 26:08Speaker 4: they're not working.
- 26:09Speaker 2: That's right.
- 26:09Speaker 10: And you know, as somebody, I mean, I have young kids.
- 26:11Speaker 10: I have a two year old and a seven year old,
- 26:13Speaker 10: and during COVID, the seven year old, it was crucial
- 26:17Speaker 10: for us to have We happen to live near a
- 26:18Speaker 10: park a half block away from us, and we were
- 26:21Speaker 10: able to just go to that. That was such a
- 26:23Speaker 10: life sent for us during that time. And it makes
- 26:26Speaker 10: just a big difference even past COVID, but certainly especially
- 26:30Speaker 10: during that time. But having parks in your community makes
- 26:32Speaker 10: a big difference for folks. And we have a great
- 26:35Speaker 10: new park in our city, the Jones Woodlands Trails up
- 26:39Speaker 10: in South Hills, and we have some existing parks that
- 26:41Speaker 10: have been cato and a lot of others that are
- 26:44Speaker 10: really great places to spend some time, to kind of
- 26:46Speaker 10: get out and to you know, joy your community.
- 26:48Speaker 2: Have a place to walk.
- 26:49Speaker 10: That's nice, you see birds and all that kind of stuff,
- 26:52Speaker 10: and it it really improves your way of life.
- 26:54Speaker 4: Talking to Charleston City Councilman Emmitt Pepper twenty six minutes
- 26:56Speaker 4: away from ten but Dave Allen showing five eighty line
- 26:59Speaker 4: broad too, part by your hometown baseball team, the Charleston
- 27:01Speaker 4: Dirty Birds. We are already thinking about baseball season, especially
- 27:04Speaker 4: with the weather we're going to have the next couple days.
- 27:06Speaker 4: Get ourselves over to go Mark Ballpark, get season tickets,
- 27:09Speaker 4: merchandise and more at dirtybirds baseball dot com. They're also
- 27:11Speaker 4: going to be doing some special thing for Valentine's Day.
- 27:14Speaker 4: We give any more information on that as we get
- 27:16Speaker 4: a little bit closer. I got to ask you something
- 27:19Speaker 4: that's been a lot of buzz the last couple of
- 27:21Speaker 4: weeks here, and that's the Town Center. We all remember,
- 27:24Speaker 4: and I am not an native Charlestontonian, but I remember,
- 27:29Speaker 4: you know, as a teenager and a young guy coming
- 27:31Speaker 4: up from Logan County and the Town Center and all
- 27:34Speaker 4: that went with it was everything. Everybody wants the Charlestontown
- 27:38Speaker 4: Center to be what it was in nineteen eighty eight. Okay,
- 27:40Speaker 4: it's not going to be that. It's never going to
- 27:43Speaker 4: be that in the way we remember it. Nothing ever
- 27:45Speaker 4: is as Paul Simon said, everything looks good in black
- 27:49Speaker 4: and white. Okay, just keep that in mind, and there's
- 27:52Speaker 4: not going to be one store. People have blown up
- 27:55Speaker 4: our text lines and social media said, well, if you
- 27:57Speaker 4: just put this in here, not gonna happen. Would you
- 28:00Speaker 4: ideally like to see happened with the Charleston town Send man?
- 28:04Speaker 10: You know, uh, you know the fact that there's a
- 28:06Speaker 10: possibility that the city might end up in you know, ownership,
- 28:09Speaker 10: and that's above my pay grade. I'm not, you know,
- 28:11Speaker 10: involved in those conversations or anything. We have a large
- 28:13Speaker 10: city council. But but you know, I think there has
- 28:17Speaker 10: to be some amount of mixed use. I think, you know,
- 28:19Speaker 10: some residential is something that've it's been working in places
- 28:22Speaker 10: for decades now at this point. I mean, you know,
- 28:24Speaker 10: it's not even a new thing to have residential with
- 28:27Speaker 10: a mall, that kind of thing. I mean, I worked
- 28:29Speaker 10: when I worked in the Northeast. I think it was
- 28:31Speaker 10: a Trump Tower that was like I'm built on top
- 28:34Speaker 10: of a mall in the tower where I lived in
- 28:36Speaker 10: and or worked in, and and and that worked great,
- 28:39Speaker 10: you know, And so I think there's opportunities to do
- 28:42Speaker 10: things like that where we have some residential. We have
- 28:45Speaker 10: some office base, we have you know, some recreation, and
- 28:48Speaker 10: we have some stores.
- 28:49Speaker 2: I mean, but ultimately, look, you know, you know, in.
- 28:51Speaker 10: The past several years, this issue comes up and people
- 28:54Speaker 10: complains that city needs to do something about the mall.
- 28:56Speaker 2: It's like, we don't, you know, we don't own it.
- 28:58Speaker 10: But if we do own it, you know, I don't
- 29:00Speaker 10: think we're we're going to be the ones that are
- 29:02Speaker 10: going to be the developers of it. You have to
- 29:04Speaker 10: find someone to do.
- 29:04Speaker 4: People I think forget that sometimes. And it's this is
- 29:07Speaker 4: not exclusive to Charleston. I mean it happens in every
- 29:10Speaker 4: town I read about on social media. Well, the city
- 29:12Speaker 4: of Blank, you all need to put in a restaurant.
- 29:14Speaker 4: Well that's not what cities do. You know, you don't
- 29:17Speaker 4: put in restaurants. You don't put in things like this. Now,
- 29:20Speaker 4: if you get in agreement with the whole group where
- 29:22Speaker 4: maybe the city does take over it, then but you're
- 29:25Speaker 4: still not going to be the one to put restaurants in.
- 29:27Speaker 4: I mean that's you can go out and you can
- 29:29Speaker 4: have you can say, hey, bring your place here, but
- 29:31Speaker 4: it's not it's not the city diner so to speak,
- 29:34Speaker 4: or whatever. And I think I'm I'm all on board
- 29:37Speaker 4: with this multi use thing. I mean, I really really am,
- 29:39Speaker 4: because it's worked so many other places.
- 29:41Speaker 5: And it's not to say that.
- 29:43Speaker 4: You couldn't have a nice restaurant there. It's not to
- 29:46Speaker 4: say that you couldn't have a store or too. But
- 29:48Speaker 4: to be whatever the town Center was in its peak,
- 29:51Speaker 4: forty whatever it was, I don't know, forty five to
- 29:53Speaker 4: seventy stores, whatever is there. That's not the that's not
- 29:56Speaker 4: the future going forward.
- 29:58Speaker 2: I don't think so.
- 29:59Speaker 10: And you know, I have ideas about things that we
- 30:02Speaker 10: can put in there, but I'm not Look, I'm not
- 30:03Speaker 10: a developer, you know. I don't have the metrics on this.
- 30:06Speaker 10: I'm not that we need to find the folks who do,
- 30:09Speaker 10: but I do think it has to have some kind
- 30:10Speaker 10: of a mixed use.
- 30:11Speaker 4: All right, So if you are going to be elected
- 30:15Speaker 4: as a as an at large member of city council,
- 30:18Speaker 4: we talked about a few of the things, but are
- 30:20Speaker 4: there anything else that is kind of on your wish
- 30:22Speaker 4: list for the city of Charleston going forward? Yeah?
- 30:24Speaker 10: And I really I really think we just we really
- 30:26Speaker 10: need to focus on ways that we can make redevelop
- 30:30Speaker 10: get more people to stay here, and redevelop the land
- 30:33Speaker 10: that we have, you know, and and create those third spaces.
- 30:36Speaker 4: All right, Emma Pepper at large City councilman is running
- 30:40Speaker 4: for reelection City of Charleston. Best of luck in your
- 30:42Speaker 4: campaign and have you on again soon. See we didn't

- 35:22Speaker 4: does that I'm not sure.
- 35:24Speaker 2: She's actually running the show.
- 35:25Speaker 4: Yeah, the comments are are absolutely hilarious. I love the
- 35:28Speaker 4: one I saw last night that said something like experience
- 35:32Speaker 4: and it said.
- 35:32Speaker 5: Which means old.
- 35:33Speaker 4: You know, all right, so let's get serious here for Yeah,
- 35:37Speaker 4: now let's don't.
- 35:39Speaker 2: It's more fun.
- 35:40Speaker 4: We got we got what's what are we looking at
- 35:43Speaker 4: as we speak right now? Because right now we got
- 35:45Speaker 4: our sock drop going on? Considering it's January the twenty second,
- 35:50Speaker 4: not too terribly bad. Today, Tomorrow looks good. What do
- 35:54Speaker 4: we got coming in Saturday, Sunday and into Monday and
- 35:56Speaker 4: really all of next week?
- 35:58Speaker 13: So uh, more than anything, the messaging has been there.
- 36:04Speaker 13: Ari Sarsalari, who is with Foxweather, very good friend of mine.
- 36:08Speaker 13: You know, as he said he said last night, he goes,
- 36:11Speaker 13: you know, we haven't had a storm, and I've I've
- 36:15Speaker 13: said this as well, we haven't had a storm that
- 36:17Speaker 13: has had this much advertisement this far ahead in a
- 36:21Speaker 13: long time, especially in this digital age. And when I
- 36:25Speaker 13: say digital age, digital age actually kicked off about fifteen
- 36:27Speaker 13: twenty years ago really, but the new digital age where
- 36:30Speaker 13: we have literally forecast models, all of them right at
- 36:34Speaker 13: our fingertips, and we can go through and analyze every
- 36:37Speaker 13: single one of them as they come in. But this
- 36:40Speaker 13: storm has been well advertised. You know, there's this storm coming.
- 36:43Speaker 13: Everybody from New Mexico to the East coast. You know
- 36:47Speaker 13: there's a storm coming.
- 36:48Speaker 2: That's about sixteen hundred miles worth of winter storm watches
- 36:52Speaker 2: that were all issued at the exact same time yesterday
- 36:55Speaker 2: and once the last time that happened.
- 36:57Speaker 13: We haven't had one like that, especially with the coordination,
- 37:00Speaker 13: and it takes it literally took the National Weather Service
- 37:03Speaker 13: as a collective hole of say, we're issuing this winter
- 37:05Speaker 13: storm watch, even though some of it was outside of
- 37:07Speaker 13: the parameters for when they normally would, We're issuing this
- 37:11Speaker 13: winter storm watch for everybody across the country at once
- 37:14Speaker 13: because this is so impactful and the message needs to
- 37:17Speaker 13: be cohesive, and that is we've got a major impacting
- 37:21Speaker 13: storm that is going to cross the country and on
- 37:24Speaker 13: the far southern side there's gonna be ice.
- 37:27Speaker 2: There's a chance that in southern West Virginia and maybe
- 37:29Speaker 2: southeast Kentucky.
- 37:30Speaker 13: We do get some sweet and maybe some freezing rain
- 37:34Speaker 13: mixing in. We've talked about it before, the warm wedge
- 37:37Speaker 13: the storm system is incredibly powerful, and the fact that
- 37:42Speaker 13: it can draw the warm air up from you know,
- 37:45Speaker 13: the deep South, literally Alabama, Georgia, back up across parts
- 37:49Speaker 13: of you know, North Carolina, Tennessee, and right up the
- 37:53Speaker 13: centrally corridor g from you know, right there from Pikeville Juice,
- 37:57Speaker 13: all the way of cord Or g and even up
- 37:59Speaker 13: to as far as maybe flat woods, as far as Clarksburg.
- 38:04Speaker 13: It might even get there. And that's going to cut
- 38:07Speaker 13: some snow totals back. But do you go north of there,
- 38:09Speaker 13: Holy smokes, the Ohio River a foot of snow and
- 38:14Speaker 13: into the mountains a foot to maybe even eighteen inches
- 38:17Speaker 13: worth of snow. But you know, forecast models as of now,
- 38:21Speaker 13: so we've talked about this, the national blend of models
- 38:25Speaker 13: has any has spikeful around four to five inches worth
- 38:29Speaker 13: of snow right now. Beckley could be on order of
- 38:33Speaker 13: about six inches of snow. Charleston could be anywhere from
- 38:38Speaker 13: six to eight inches of snow if the warm wedge
- 38:42Speaker 13: wins out. But last night the forecast models started to
- 38:47Speaker 13: trend back south. Wasn't a lot, but it was enough
- 38:50Speaker 13: that it was it was substantial that we go, Okay,
- 38:52Speaker 13: there's the trend. There's what we call a windshill wiper
- 38:56Speaker 13: effect where it goes back and forth, back and forth,
- 38:58Speaker 13: And we still do expect probably by this afternoon a
- 39:01Speaker 13: little bit touched further south.
- 39:03Speaker 2: But for here the Charleston metro area.
- 39:06Speaker 13: How critical is that it's very critical because if the
- 39:09Speaker 13: models just trend just far enough south, it's a difference
- 39:12Speaker 13: from us having anywhere from a six inch snow to
- 39:15Speaker 13: a foot.
- 39:16Speaker 5: Okay, And when might we know if that's the case.
- 39:22Speaker 13: I really it's going to be this afternoon into this
- 39:24Speaker 13: evening tonight, okay, because because I mean we're still snow
- 39:28Speaker 13: didn't start till Saturday, Yeah, and here it is Thursday.
- 39:31Speaker 13: We obviously we know that in the forecast. I think
- 39:35Speaker 13: you saw the posts that had this morning. You know,
- 39:37Speaker 13: the forecast from the National Weather Service this morning was
- 39:40Speaker 13: that we would have the possibility and mind you, it
- 39:43Speaker 13: is a wide range, but we have an eight to
- 39:46Speaker 13: twelve inch potential for snow, and that would be if
- 39:50Speaker 13: the warm wedge does not win.
- 39:53Speaker 2: And this is what I have.
- 39:54Speaker 4: Been seeing from a lot of folks online. They're saying, well,
- 39:56Speaker 4: and we hear about that warm wedge. It kind of protects,
- 39:59Speaker 4: you know, from some time Huntings and Charleston.
- 40:01Speaker 5: Maybe that this good.
- 40:02Speaker 4: But what you're saying is is even if the warm
- 40:04Speaker 4: wedge comes in, it doesn't mean that, oh, we're not
- 40:06Speaker 4: going to get any snow at all. Everybody is going
- 40:08Speaker 4: to get a lot of snow regardless of what went right.
- 40:11Speaker 13: I mean, you think about it. Four inches of snow,
- 40:13Speaker 13: that's your shoveling stuff. Two to four inches is when
- 40:17Speaker 13: you start pulling the shovels out and the snowblowers. Four
- 40:19Speaker 13: inches there are a lot of folks that bring snow
- 40:21Speaker 13: blowers out even for that, but especially once you get
- 40:23Speaker 13: to six inches, which I firmly believe we are going
- 40:26Speaker 13: to be at least six inches here right now as
- 40:29Speaker 13: we speak, right now, six inches of snow in the
- 40:32Speaker 13: Charles the metro area.
- 40:33Speaker 2: All right.
- 40:33Speaker 4: And but even my point is is even if that
- 40:36Speaker 4: warm wedge that we always talk about does went out
- 40:39Speaker 4: or takes the upper hand, or what analogy you want
- 40:42Speaker 4: to use, that doesn't mean we're not going to get snow.
- 40:44Speaker 4: Because I saw people post and say, oh, we're just
- 40:46Speaker 4: gonna get rain for here. No, no, no, that's not
- 40:48Speaker 4: gonna happen. No, No, it's that that's a joke. Could
- 40:51Speaker 4: that mix in later, yes, But here's the here's the
- 40:53Speaker 4: bigger problem. And this is where uh, this is where
- 40:56Speaker 4: my discussions with h you know, municipal leaders and UCH
- 41:00Speaker 4: comes in, is that we're going to start think about
- 41:03Speaker 4: this Saturday.
- 41:04Speaker 2: We're barely going to get above twenty degrees. That's okay.
- 41:08Speaker 13: We've set the stage beginning Friday evening and night going
- 41:13Speaker 13: into Saturday morning that we're cooling the ground up off significantly.
- 41:18Speaker 13: So everything that falls going into Saturday evening will most
- 41:23Speaker 13: Saturday afternoon, even though it's only going to be a
- 41:25Speaker 13: half inch an inch maybe two inches by the time
- 41:27Speaker 13: sunset hits probably a round an inch by sunset. That
- 41:31Speaker 13: is there, and you have this coating that is keeping
- 41:35Speaker 13: the ground so cold. If the warm wedge moves in,
- 41:38Speaker 13: then you put ice on top of it, and then
- 41:41Speaker 13: you know, that's and even if we do briefly get
- 41:44Speaker 13: some very cold rain, still that becomes a layer of ice,
- 41:47Speaker 13: and then there's snow that comes into this sunstude.
- 41:49Speaker 4: And this kind of reminds me last year around January
- 41:52Speaker 4: sixth or whatever, we had a similar situation.
- 41:54Speaker 5: It was on a weekend.
- 41:55Speaker 4: Yeah, I've started on Sunday, we had snow and then
- 41:58Speaker 4: we had freezing rain. On top of that, and then
- 42:00Speaker 4: we had more snow on.
- 42:01Speaker 2: Top of it, and the cold settled in and he
- 42:03Speaker 2: could and.
- 42:03Speaker 5: The snow stuck around for a long time, and.
- 42:05Speaker 13: Everyone in Kanas City complained, like you wouldn't believe because.
- 42:09Speaker 2: Nobody touched our streets. You live in the flats, of
- 42:12Speaker 2: course they're not going to get touched.
- 42:13Speaker 4: Yeah, Now that's just I mean, that's the hills when
- 42:16Speaker 4: you when I mean the area that I live in
- 42:18Speaker 4: in Putnam County, uh Tays Valley Road, they do a
- 42:21Speaker 4: decent job on it. The subdivision that I live in,
- 42:24Speaker 4: we have a guy that comes in and scrapes, okay,
- 42:27Speaker 4: but he's not going to do it that off because
- 42:29Speaker 4: he's doing fifty five other subdivisions exactly. So that's just
- 42:32Speaker 4: part of you.
- 42:32Speaker 5: You choose we live, and you think about things like this.
- 42:35Speaker 4: You know, I chose my wife and I chose our
- 42:37Speaker 4: house because when I when we were living in Logan,
- 42:39Speaker 4: I lived on a hill and one winter my vehicle
- 42:43Speaker 4: was parked at the bottom of the hill the entire winter,
- 42:45Speaker 4: and I said, I'm not doing this again. When we
- 42:47Speaker 4: went to a real estate agent, I said, flat that's
- 42:50Speaker 4: what I want.
- 42:51Speaker 5: Flat land, no more hills. No more, no more hills.
- 42:54Speaker 13: And so so that's so that is the that is
- 42:57Speaker 13: the concern amongst state county city leaders is if we
- 43:03Speaker 13: get the eyes, that's the worst problem, because you know
- 43:06Speaker 13: they're gonna be the city, the city streets that you
- 43:08Speaker 13: can't touch.
- 43:08Speaker 2: It's gonna have layer of eyes. And then you've got
- 43:10Speaker 2: you've got to take care of the people that live
- 43:12Speaker 2: in the hills. They're the first priority. But I cannot
- 43:16Speaker 2: stress this enough. It is going to be so cold
- 43:20Speaker 2: right before and right after all next week, not get
- 43:24Speaker 2: enough freezing. Matter of fact, we've got a couple of
- 43:26Speaker 2: shots where we will probably have second half of next week,
- 43:29Speaker 2: big time cold that moves back in another chance of snow,
- 43:32Speaker 2: another chance of snow. Now think about this.
- 43:34Speaker 13: Ten years ago today we were reeling from the sixteen
- 43:38Speaker 13: inches of snow that we had ten years ago at
- 43:40Speaker 13: this time.
- 43:41Speaker 2: That's what shut down the West Virginia Auto Show. And
- 43:43Speaker 2: probably yesterday all your pictures in Facebook started showing up
- 43:47Speaker 2: of remember this from ten years I have.
- 43:49Speaker 4: Yeah, But I will tell you the honety and Fishing
- 43:52Speaker 4: show is going on because we had Glenn Gerrel on yesterday.
- 43:55Speaker 2: And you're doing the snow you hunt in the snow.
- 43:56Speaker 4: Yeah, and so my fish. Can you hang out with
- 43:59Speaker 4: me here just one second? I got to take a break.

- 46:55Speaker 4: they're going on ten to five on Sunday or the
- 46:57Speaker 4: cattle Sema Convention Center.
- 46:58Speaker 5: Brian Hughes is here all right, so we.
- 47:00Speaker 4: Were officially not going to still have been able to
- 47:04Speaker 4: put the exclamation point on the storm system until probably
- 47:06Speaker 4: late today, is what you're.
- 47:08Speaker 13: Saying, late today tomorrow morning. Yes, we're gonna have it
- 47:11Speaker 13: all buttoned up for the most part. All right, you
- 47:13Speaker 13: know there's still forecast models that come in. And believe me,
- 47:16Speaker 13: it was a game of mine yesterday afternoon evening last night.
- 47:19Speaker 13: I think I'm I've been every single person's Facebook bead
- 47:23Speaker 13: in West Virginia and Kentucky and Tennessee and Virginia.
- 47:28Speaker 4: Explain to people though, because people will say a lot
- 47:31Speaker 4: of people have said, well, you know, I look at
- 47:34Speaker 4: this weather person and they say this, or I look
- 47:36Speaker 4: at this service and they say that. And just like
- 47:38Speaker 4: everything in life, there's going to people are going to
- 47:40Speaker 4: look at things and see disagreements.
- 47:42Speaker 2: Right there, Absolutely is.
- 47:44Speaker 13: I mean, as I as I've said, I've been doing
- 47:46Speaker 13: this well over twenty five years, and you know there's
- 47:49Speaker 13: pattern recognition. I know the biases of forecast models, and
- 47:53Speaker 13: I look at some of that as as you know,
- 47:56Speaker 13: an absolute experience. When I know the biases, I know
- 47:59Speaker 13: I know what things perform a little bit better. And listen,
- 48:02Speaker 13: we're all listening to each other to some degree, We're
- 48:04Speaker 13: all listening. Listen to one thing this that the other.
- 48:07Speaker 13: I won't listen to Jim ken Toy, very good friend
- 48:09Speaker 13: of mine. I don't know that he's coming to Charleston.
- 48:12Speaker 2: If he does, i'll let you. If he does, he'll
- 48:14Speaker 2: call me and he'll let you know. But not as yet.
- 48:16Speaker 2: But I listened to what everybody's thinking. Because somebody finds
- 48:19Speaker 2: something there like hey, this blah blah blah, check this out,
- 48:22Speaker 2: and then you go, oh, look at that. Yeah, so
- 48:24Speaker 2: there you you absorb so much, but then it's time
- 48:27Speaker 2: to regurgitate it and tell people what she and it
- 48:29Speaker 2: could all.
- 48:30Speaker 4: It could all change, right But as we stand right
- 48:34Speaker 4: at a store, as we stand right now, give us
- 48:40Speaker 4: a timeline as as and it may all change tomorrow,
- 48:42Speaker 4: but as it stands right now, because people are playning,
- 48:44Speaker 4: there's high school basketball and so on and so forth. Uh,
- 48:48Speaker 4: give us a timeline. We're fine tomorrow and Friday. Tomorrow, Friday,
- 48:51Speaker 4: we're fine.
- 48:52Speaker 5: And what point Saturday should we start getting concerned.
- 48:54Speaker 2: On Saturday, we will be cold. Temperatures are going to
- 48:57Speaker 2: have a hard time getting out of the teens. We're
- 48:59Speaker 2: going to a few spots. Will we get to the
- 49:01Speaker 2: low twenties.
- 49:02Speaker 13: But as we go into the midday, well, some light
- 49:04Speaker 13: flurries that'll start, then some light snow showers. By the
- 49:07Speaker 13: time we get the sunset, there'll probably be an inch,
- 49:10Speaker 13: maybe up to two inches. As we go into Saturday night, though,
- 49:13Speaker 13: this snow will ramp up significantly. Now there is a
- 49:17Speaker 13: possibility that in the overnight hours, as that snow is
- 49:20Speaker 13: starting to as that snow is starting to ramp up,
- 49:23Speaker 13: that we will have some winterry mix that maybe some
- 49:26Speaker 13: sleep freezing rate that mixes in in that warm wedge
- 49:28Speaker 13: along one nineteen quarter or g. And then after that
- 49:31Speaker 13: the snow comes back in, it takes does.
- 49:33Speaker 5: That melt any of the snow that's.
- 49:35Speaker 2: There, It will melt some of it, but not all.
- 49:38Speaker 5: And then the snow and then we're all in the
- 49:39Speaker 5: snow again.
- 49:40Speaker 13: Sunday all back to snow and then it is going
- 49:42Speaker 13: to be cold, and the snow will wrap up on
- 49:44Speaker 13: on Monday. But Monday it'll be flurries and most of
- 49:46Speaker 13: that will be happening the mountains of West vidg All.
- 49:48Speaker 5: Right, and morning commute on Monday looking rough.
- 49:50Speaker 13: It doesn't look good at all. Matter of fact, I
- 49:52Speaker 13: don't think there's gonna be a lot of events. I
- 49:55Speaker 13: believe probably almost all fifty five counties West Virginia will
- 49:58Speaker 13: be out of school on Monday.
- 49:59Speaker 5: All right.
- 49:59Speaker 4: That's that's you know, that's where we are right now. Yes,
- 50:02Speaker 4: and high school basketball Saturday night. Because I know a
- 50:04Speaker 4: lot of folks are listening to you. You think most
- 50:07Speaker 4: of it will be canceled.
- 50:08Speaker 2: You they need to move them up to the midday
- 50:10Speaker 2: or go ahead and cancel.
- 50:11Speaker 4: We've got a big concert over and that's not going
- 50:13Speaker 4: to cancel the Jason Alden Show. I mean that they're
- 50:15Speaker 4: going to do that no matter what.
- 50:16Speaker 2: Jason Aldin may be spending Sunday in parts of Monday
- 50:20Speaker 2: in West Virginia.
- 50:21Speaker 4: All right, Jason's a regular listening to the show.
- 50:24Speaker 13: By the way, well listen, Jason, have a concert come
- 50:27Speaker 13: on in Monday morning right here?
- 50:29Speaker 5: All right?
- 50:30Speaker 4: All right, Meteorologist Brian Hughes, I appreciate you, buddy. Follow
- 50:33Speaker 4: this gun on Facebook if you will, because he's he's

- 50:37Speaker 4: Let's hang out with me here one second. Let's go

- 51:18Speaker 4: hear what's going on? Oh yeah, I got Oh you
- 51:20Speaker 4: got to get you ear he's got the fancy fancy earbuds.
- 51:22Speaker 5: And what's going on to Capitol today?
- 51:25Speaker 16: Well, most importantly it is Preston County Day and there
- 51:27Speaker 16: are buckwheat cakes and sausage, sausage and what else?
- 51:32Speaker 2: Did I have?
- 51:32Speaker 7: Apple?
- 51:33Speaker 16: Saw you put the apple sauce on the buckwheat cakes.
- 51:35Speaker 16: It's Preston County thing. So that's that's the most important
