- 0:00Speaker 1: And now Effective Communication with Phil Zeller, CEO Dale Carnegie Southwest, Michigan.
- 0:08Speaker 1: Would you like more engagement in your life? Phil Zeller
- 0:12Speaker 1: effective communication? Engagement? You picture, it's a beautiful thing, you
- 0:18Speaker 1: being more engaged in life, getting more people engaged with you.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Imagine that. Well, you don't have to think too far
- 0:26Speaker 1: if you've been around as long as I have. I
- 0:29Speaker 1: was thinking about this today before I walked in the
- 0:31Speaker 1: studio to share this message with you. Wow, has the
- 0:35Speaker 1: world changed in so many ways, and yet we're still
- 0:39Speaker 1: the same people. I go back to when I was
- 0:43Speaker 1: a kid. Now I've been around the horn for just
- 0:45Speaker 1: a couple of years, as they say, But I remember
- 0:48Speaker 1: as a kid growing up, when the phone rang, It
- 0:51Speaker 1: wasn't a cell phone in your hand. It was a
- 0:54Speaker 1: telephone on the wall in your house with a cord
- 0:57Speaker 1: attached to it. And when that thing went off, people
- 1:01Speaker 1: ran to the phone. They ran to grab the phone.
- 1:04Speaker 1: It was who could get there first, right and say
- 1:06Speaker 1: hello to whoever that was on the other side of
- 1:10Speaker 1: that call. And we literally ran to the phone. And
- 1:14Speaker 1: then not only that, not only the phone, but the
- 1:16Speaker 1: doorbell would ring. The doorbell, Yes, the doorbell, somebody push
- 1:22Speaker 1: that button outside your house or knock on your door,
- 1:26Speaker 1: and we would literally run to the door to see
- 1:30Speaker 1: who is here. This is exciting. Somebody came to visit,
- 1:35Speaker 1: and we were so excited. And then you'd go out
- 1:38Speaker 1: on the town. You'd go out just driving through town
- 1:41Speaker 1: or going through the city or your neighborhood or wherever
- 1:44Speaker 1: you were at, and you were excited about who you
- 1:46Speaker 1: would see. And he'd see somebody I know, I mean,
- 1:48Speaker 1: wave to him over there. You'd be so excited to
- 1:51Speaker 1: see people that you know, would just wave to them
- 1:53Speaker 1: and to be out and alive. And that's the way
- 1:57Speaker 1: it was when I grew up and some of you saying, well,
- 2:01Speaker 1: I grew up there in that same time, Phil, it
- 2:03Speaker 1: was the same way. We couldn't wait for the phone
- 2:06Speaker 1: to ring, that somebody to knock on the door, to
- 2:08Speaker 1: take that drive through town to see somebody that we
- 2:10Speaker 1: know that we could say hi and wave to. So
- 2:15Speaker 1: my question for you is, what is it like now?
- 2:18Speaker 1: What is it like now? What happens when the phone rings,
- 2:22Speaker 1: your cell phone rings? Are you excited you can't wait
- 2:25Speaker 1: to answer? You push you know right now? The green
- 2:29Speaker 1: button fired up? What happens when somebody knocks on your door.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Do you get excited running the door? Who's here? This
- 2:37Speaker 1: is exciting? Or do you say why is somebody knocking
- 2:39Speaker 1: at the door? And when you go out on the
- 2:43Speaker 1: town or you're going somewhere, do you look forward to
- 2:46Speaker 1: running to people that you know and saying hi to
- 2:49Speaker 1: people that you know? Or do you say no, I
- 2:51Speaker 1: just want to get in the store, getting when I want,
- 2:52Speaker 1: and get out and leave and just do it quietly
- 2:54Speaker 1: and go about my business. How are you looking at life? So?
- 3:03Speaker 1: What issues does this great for us? What issues are
- 3:08Speaker 1: we creating for ourselves by the way we look at
- 3:12Speaker 1: the world by looking at Is this something that's an
- 3:18Speaker 1: inconvenience or is this something that I could get excited about?
- 3:23Speaker 1: And people often ask, well, what is it that people
- 3:26Speaker 1: do to have a better quality of life? What do
- 3:28Speaker 1: people do to be happier? Well, one of the things
- 3:32Speaker 1: that they do is they seek out happiness. They look
- 3:38Speaker 1: for happiness and things. And the old saying goes as
- 3:41Speaker 1: Dale Carnegie said, one's perception is one's reality. Now, you
- 3:46Speaker 1: did share that what you want to do is create
- 3:48Speaker 1: an eager want, actually said, arouse an eager want in
- 3:52Speaker 1: other people? What if that other person is you what
- 3:56Speaker 1: if you have to arouse an eager want in yourself.
- 4:00Speaker 1: I give example, somebody the other day asked me, Hey, Phil,
- 4:02Speaker 1: do you want to go golfy. Well, let's put it
- 4:06Speaker 1: this way. I've never been paid to play golf in
- 4:08Speaker 1: my life. I am truly what they call a recreational
- 4:14Speaker 1: social golfer. And so what I do in those moments,
- 4:18Speaker 1: knowing that golf specifically is not my greatest game which
- 4:23Speaker 1: somebody is going to pay me to go play, I
- 4:26Speaker 1: have to get my mindset straight. And the first thing
- 4:28Speaker 1: I ask myself is, wait a minute, this is awesome.
- 4:33Speaker 1: I get a golf with somebody who's special, that's unique,
- 4:36Speaker 1: that knows certain things I don't. That is a cool person.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Oh yeah, oh yeah, I want to go golfing. I
- 4:42Speaker 1: want to go golf and just to spend time with
- 4:44Speaker 1: that person. So I'm excited to spend time with that
- 4:47Speaker 1: person or those people. And that's one reason why I
- 4:51Speaker 1: want to go play golf. Another reason is, Hey, I'm
- 4:53Speaker 1: going to get my steps in today. It's going to
- 4:55Speaker 1: be healthy, I'm going to be out. I'm going to
- 4:56Speaker 1: get steps, And this is another reason why I want
- 4:58Speaker 1: to do this. The reason is, imagine if I get
- 5:01Speaker 1: a good shot. Imagine if something happens good on the
- 5:04Speaker 1: golf course and it actually look like I know what
- 5:06Speaker 1: I'm doing. And yes, my friends, I hit a birdie yesterday.
- 5:09Speaker 1: I did. It was amazing. I got a birdie yesterday,
- 5:12Speaker 1: And that would have never happen if I didn't arouse
- 5:15Speaker 1: an eager want myself. So my challenge to you, look
- 5:19Speaker 1: at your opportunities in front of you. Find one great
- 5:23Speaker 1: reason to participate, or give yourself three good reasons. Either way,
- 5:28Speaker 1: give yourself a reason, arouse an eager want yourself to
- 5:31Speaker 1: get involved, and you'll have more engagement in your life.
- 5:34Speaker 1: Now go make it happen.
