- 0:57Speaker 1: the greatest thing since bonding with your dad about sports.
- 1:03Speaker 1: My love of sports came from my dad, Like many
- 1:06Speaker 1: fathers and their children, we frequently talked about sports, and
- 1:10Speaker 1: his favorite teams became mine. Between the NFL and NBA,
- 1:14Speaker 1: NHL and Major League Baseball, those teams have combined for
- 1:18Speaker 1: one championship. So thanks Dad for passing down a lifetime
- 1:22Speaker 1: of frustration. In all seriousness, most of my favorite childhood
- 1:27Speaker 1: memories involved sports, and many were spent with my dad.
- 1:31Speaker 1: I can vividly remember when he took me to my
- 1:34Speaker 1: first Major League baseball game. It was nineteen seventy three.
- 1:38Speaker 1: My oldest sister, Kim, was an exchange student in Argentina
- 1:42Speaker 1: and when our program was finished, we drove to New
- 1:45Speaker 1: York City to pick her up at Kennedy Airport. It
- 1:47Speaker 1: was my dad, my other older sister, Chris, and me
- 1:52Speaker 1: on that trip. My dad took us to Shay Stadium.
- 1:55Speaker 1: It was August twenty eighth, the Mets against the Podres.
- 1:58Speaker 1: I remember Jerry Morales leading off the game with a
- 2:00Speaker 1: home run for San Diego. I remember the impossibly high
- 2:05Speaker 1: leg kick of the Mets outstanding rookie pitcher John Mattlack.
- 2:09Speaker 1: I remember how heartbroken I was that my hero Willie
- 2:12Speaker 1: Mays was not in the Mets starting lineup. And I
- 2:15Speaker 1: remember when my sister Chris asked our dad when halftime
- 2:19Speaker 1: was because she wanted to see the marching band. Chris
- 2:23Speaker 1: was not a big sports fan. Most of all, I
- 2:26Speaker 1: remember how magical it felt to be there, the immaculately
- 2:30Speaker 1: groomed perfection of a major league diamond, the enormity of
- 2:33Speaker 1: Shay Stadium while sitting in.
- 2:35Speaker 2: The upper deck.
- 2:36Speaker 1: It was a movie set come to life, and to
- 2:38Speaker 1: that point, it was, without question, the highlight of my life.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Here's another great sports memory with my dad. When I
- 2:46Speaker 1: was about fourteen or fifteen years old, he took me
- 2:49Speaker 1: on a weekend golf trip, even though he almost never played.
- 2:53Speaker 1: It was about an hour drive and the course wasn't
- 2:56Speaker 1: particularly memorable, but we played golf for three straight days,
- 3:01Speaker 1: ate every meal at restaurants, shared a hotel room, and
- 3:04Speaker 1: watched sports on TV at night. It remains one of
- 3:08Speaker 1: my favorite weekends. Ever, now that I'm a dad, I'm
- 3:12Speaker 1: savoring having similar experiences with my son. If you ask
- 3:17Speaker 1: Sam to name the best day of his life so far,
- 3:20Speaker 1: he'd undoubtedly say it was attending the Bengals Ram Super
- 3:23Speaker 1: Bowl in Los Angeles, and when he recently made his
- 3:26Speaker 1: first birdie, I felt like I'd made a hole in one.
- 3:30Speaker 1: So on this Father's Day, I'm grateful for bonding over
- 3:33Speaker 1: sports with my dad, Larry Hord, my stepfather, Jack Bailey,
- 3:38Speaker 1: my father in law, Paul Rasconi and my son Sam,
- 3:41Speaker 1: and I sincerely hope that you have been as blessed
- 3:45Speaker 1: as I've been. The Bengals Booth podcast is brought to

- 4:18Speaker 1: with a pair of very proud dads. It is Father's
- 4:24Speaker 1: Day weekend. I have the perfect guests for this particular holiday.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Jimmy Burrow, father of Joe, Jimmy Chase, father of Jamar,
- 4:34Speaker 1: two buddies who were at Bengals practice recently and are
- 4:37Speaker 1: kind enough to join us on the podcast. I want
- 4:39Speaker 1: to start by asking each of you guys this question.
- 4:44Speaker 1: When did you first know that your son was different
- 4:48Speaker 1: from the other kids athletically. Jimmy Burrow, why don't you
- 4:52Speaker 1: go first.
- 4:53Speaker 3: Well, you know, third, fourth, fifth grade, he was We're
- 4:57Speaker 3: in a small town, so he was the best athlete
- 5:00Speaker 3: in his age group. So but as I said, there's
- 5:03Speaker 3: not many many people here, so he kind of take
- 5:06Speaker 3: that with a grain of salt. And then as he
- 5:09Speaker 3: started playing baseball, basketball and football, just started having a
- 5:12Speaker 3: lot of success. And and you know, he would he
- 5:16Speaker 3: would hit home runs and score a lot of points
- 5:19Speaker 3: in basketball. So it was just probably just several things,
- 5:23Speaker 3: but really football tenth grade is when I realized that
- 5:27Speaker 3: he could he could really have some opportunities to play
- 5:30Speaker 3: Division one football.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Jimmy Chase, how about you?
- 5:35Speaker 4: Oh?
- 5:35Speaker 5: I want to say it started like around seven, eight,
- 5:39Speaker 5: nine years old. He's playing basketball and this is his
- 5:43Speaker 5: first year playing basketball, and all the other kids had
- 5:47Speaker 5: been on the team already and he was the newest
- 5:49Speaker 5: one on the team. So they put him on a
- 5:52Speaker 5: team with the guys that wasn't that good, okay, and
- 5:57Speaker 5: it was like one against five. Jamo just took it
- 5:59Speaker 5: to the whole team, you know, and I was like, wow,
- 6:01Speaker 5: this little boy is crazy. And then every year it
- 6:04Speaker 5: just happened over and over again.
- 6:06Speaker 1: You know, we've all heard stories about dads training their
- 6:11Speaker 1: kids at an early age, sometimes excessively. So what did
- 6:15Speaker 1: each of you guys do to aid in your son's development?
- 6:19Speaker 1: Jimmy Chase, how about you go first on this one.
- 6:22Speaker 5: Well, I had Jamaal on a rigorous workout at an
- 6:26Speaker 5: early age. Okay, he was doing push ups. Every time
- 6:31Speaker 5: I got in trouble, I made him do push ups.
- 6:33Speaker 5: And you know, I think that developed his work ethic
- 6:37Speaker 5: over the years, you know, because I always had him training,
- 6:40Speaker 5: I always had him working out. I always had him
- 6:42Speaker 5: doing something to showing up his craft at an early age.
- 6:47Speaker 1: Jimmy Burrow, Well, he played so many different sports.
- 6:51Speaker 3: I guess you know, we were just as a as
- 6:54Speaker 3: a parent, we were there, you know, being positive and
- 6:57Speaker 3: supporting him certainly as he got older.
- 7:01Speaker 2: We would watch some film here and there, here and there.
- 7:04Speaker 3: To a lot of times when I was coaching, I
- 7:06Speaker 3: couldn't watch his his uh a lot of his early
- 7:09Speaker 3: age football games, whether it was third fourth grade, and
- 7:13Speaker 3: and we'd sit down and watch it, uh kind of
- 7:16Speaker 3: have fun with it, you know. I didn't grind him
- 7:18Speaker 3: and say, hey, you know, Monday night at eight o'clock,
- 7:21Speaker 3: we're going to watch film or something like that we
- 7:23Speaker 3: just kind of uh did it periodically. And and the
- 7:27Speaker 3: good thing about Joe and I think Jamar is the
- 7:30Speaker 3: same way as they. They love practicing, and uh so
- 7:35Speaker 3: you don't you don't really have to as they as
- 7:37Speaker 3: they grew up, probably and Joe for sure, I'm sure
- 7:41Speaker 3: Jamar that you didn't have to encourage them.
- 7:43Speaker 2: Hey you got to go to practice today.
- 7:44Speaker 3: I mean they wanted to go to practice, they wanted
- 7:47Speaker 3: to get better, and they wanted to hang out with
- 7:49Speaker 3: the friends. And so that all all added up to
- 7:52Speaker 3: to just being there for for.
- 7:54Speaker 2: Joe and when when he needed us.
- 7:57Speaker 1: How insanely competitive were they as kids? And here's a
- 8:01Speaker 1: key question. When you played against them, whether it was
- 8:04Speaker 1: a board game, whether it was shooting free throws, whatever,
- 8:07Speaker 1: did you let them win? Jimmy Burrow, you go first?
- 8:13Speaker 3: Not really, But it didn't take long for me not
- 8:15Speaker 3: to have a choice in h in those type things.
- 8:18Speaker 3: But that was the one thing I guess I I
- 8:22Speaker 3: saw at an early age how competitive.
- 8:25Speaker 2: Uh he was. He he wasn't a very good loser. Uh.
- 8:29Speaker 3: You know, you try to teach sportsmanship, but uh, I
- 8:33Speaker 3: think he respected his opponents and their their coaches.
- 8:37Speaker 2: And but you know he was a terrible loser.
- 8:39Speaker 3: And and uh really still is and that's just part
- 8:43Speaker 3: of his competitive fire and and uh but he had
- 8:46Speaker 3: he had teammates and friends like that too, so uh,
- 8:50Speaker 3: you know that that was good for for his whole
- 8:53Speaker 3: early stages in athletics.
- 8:55Speaker 1: Did you let jamar win? Oh?
- 8:59Speaker 4: I tried not to.
- 9:00Speaker 5: Okay, he has a real, real serious competitive edge, right.
- 9:07Speaker 5: Jamal used to cry when he lose, right, He used
- 9:11Speaker 5: to blow a gasket. And I used to have to
- 9:13Speaker 5: kind of like control at it because if he's losing
- 9:16Speaker 5: or he's behind, he gets so furious he starts crying
- 9:21Speaker 5: and he goes bananas. So I had to like kirktail
- 9:25Speaker 5: that at an early age. That was my biggest thing, like,
- 9:28Speaker 5: calm down, catch your bread, take your time. He was
- 9:31Speaker 5: he was delirious, right, But we never played games together
- 9:35Speaker 5: because number one, he didn't want me to beat him,
- 9:38Speaker 5: and then number two, I didn't want him to beat me.
- 9:40Speaker 4: You know.
- 9:40Speaker 5: I asked him to show me how to play the
- 9:42Speaker 5: PlayStation game, and he said, you press the A button
- 9:45Speaker 5: and you press the B button, right, But they had
- 9:48Speaker 5: more buttons, and I'm like, you're pressing all them buttons,
- 9:51Speaker 5: you know, so.
- 9:52Speaker 4: Like we couldn't play together because he didn't want to
- 9:55Speaker 4: lose to me. You know, I didn't want to lose
- 9:56Speaker 4: to him.
- 9:58Speaker 1: So your son's awry that lsu together or at the
- 10:02Speaker 1: same time. Basically in twenty eighteen, Jamar was a freshman,
- 10:05Speaker 1: Joe was a transfer from Ohio State. Do you remember
- 10:10Speaker 1: hearing your son talk about the other dad's son for
- 10:14Speaker 1: the first time? And what did they say, Jimmy, Chase
- 10:17Speaker 1: you go first?
- 10:19Speaker 5: Well, I told Joe got there before us, right, And
- 10:23Speaker 5: I told Jamal they got this quarterback named Joe Burrow.
- 10:27Speaker 4: He's coming down. He's like, yeah, I don't know that, dude.
- 10:29Speaker 4: I don't want to go down, you know.
- 10:31Speaker 5: So like he didn't really talk about Joe. He didn't
- 10:34Speaker 5: know much about Joe, you know. And it didn't happen
- 10:39Speaker 5: until they got that till he got that with him,
- 10:41Speaker 5: But prior to that, he wasn't really concerned about Joe.
- 10:46Speaker 1: When did Joe start telling you about Jamar?
- 10:50Speaker 3: Well, I mean soon his practice really started when Jamar
- 10:54Speaker 3: was there.
- 10:55Speaker 2: I mean he knew he had Jamar.
- 10:58Speaker 3: He said, I got some special special guys at receiver.
- 11:03Speaker 3: It's just a matter of you know, getting us all
- 11:05Speaker 3: together and and uh he said, Jamar, I think was
- 11:10Speaker 3: it was a freshman, so uh it took him a.
- 11:13Speaker 2: While to to really jail and come together.
- 11:16Speaker 3: But uh then then after that that first year in
- 11:20Speaker 3: the summer, Joe he just said that he he had
- 11:24Speaker 3: a chance to in his teammates and his team had
- 11:26Speaker 3: had a real chance to to be, uh be special.
- 11:30Speaker 3: And and he always knew, you know, Jamar was once
- 11:34Speaker 3: they started working together, that they they had a had
- 11:38Speaker 3: a bond that that it's it's just hard to explain,
- 11:40Speaker 3: and it's hard to get that bond with with quarterback
- 11:45Speaker 3: and receiver, but they they had had it fairly quickly,
- 11:48Speaker 3: and and uh, you know, it gets it's fun to watch,
- 11:51Speaker 3: and it gets better every every year. It's pretty amazing.
- 11:56Speaker 1: So the following year L s U might have been
- 11:58Speaker 1: the greatest team in college football history. That go fifteen
- 12:00Speaker 1: and oh, Joe wins the Heisman, throws sixty touchdown passes,
- 12:03Speaker 1: Jamar wins the Blitakoff Award, he catches twenty touchdowns that season.
- 12:08Speaker 1: What was that like for you two guys as parents,
- 12:11Speaker 1: Joe Burrow or Jimmy Burrow rather you go first, Well,
- 12:15Speaker 1: it was.
- 12:16Speaker 2: You know, it was a lot. I mean, there was
- 12:18Speaker 2: a lot going on.
- 12:20Speaker 3: We're trying to to interview agents, you know, I interviewed fourteen.
- 12:26Speaker 2: Robin and I here here in Athens. We're going to
- 12:29Speaker 2: all the games.
- 12:31Speaker 3: I had retired, so that made it easy for me
- 12:35Speaker 3: to get to the games. Robin was still working, but
- 12:38Speaker 3: she had gone to all of them anyway, So it
- 12:40Speaker 3: was just an exciting time to be a part of it.
- 12:44Speaker 2: And then you said, might be.
- 12:47Speaker 3: The greatest team. It is the greatest team. So that's
- 12:55Speaker 3: you'd have trouble convincing Jimmy, Chase and I otherwise. But
- 13:00Speaker 3: just to watch that team grow, it's really the first team.
- 13:02Speaker 3: And I coached for many years and watched a lot
- 13:06Speaker 3: of lot of teams, it's the first team that I
- 13:09Speaker 3: ever saw that literally got better every game. I mean
- 13:14Speaker 3: the second game they were better than the first. The
- 13:17Speaker 3: National Championship, they.
- 13:19Speaker 2: Were just better as a team. And that's offense and defense.
- 13:23Speaker 3: So combine all that with all the awards, you know,
- 13:27Speaker 3: we had Baton Rouge, Lsu, Tailgates or the best, you know,
- 13:31Speaker 3: the Chasers have so much going on. Being from New Orleans,
- 13:34Speaker 3: we didn't really get that close until really.
- 13:39Speaker 2: We got here.
- 13:40Speaker 3: But We were good friends there and tried to spend time.
- 13:43Speaker 3: But those tailgates are are are just unbelievable and we
- 13:49Speaker 3: have our own now and the Chases are part of
- 13:52Speaker 3: it and we.
- 13:54Speaker 2: Really become close as a family.
- 13:57Speaker 1: What was twenty nineteen like for the Chase family.
- 14:01Speaker 5: Was it was crazy and it was amazing at the
- 14:05Speaker 5: same time. You know, like Joe, like Jimmy said, you know,
- 14:09Speaker 5: the tailgates started it off.
- 14:11Speaker 4: That was an all day event. But then we would go.
- 14:15Speaker 5: To the games, and then the games would be like crazy, right.
- 14:19Speaker 5: We would see jim and Robin at the game. They
- 14:21Speaker 5: would be on one end of the role or in
- 14:23Speaker 5: front of us. As soon as Joe DROs Jamaar touchdown,
- 14:27Speaker 5: they turned around and screaming and holler. Sometimes we were
- 14:30Speaker 5: sitting next to each other, but we were so into
- 14:32Speaker 5: our own kids at the same time.
- 14:35Speaker 4: You know, it was like it was crazy.
- 14:37Speaker 5: But you know that year, the practices were better than
- 14:42Speaker 5: the games, right, the practices, right, I'm like, Joe won
- 14:47Speaker 5: me over in practice because every time a fight broke out,
- 14:51Speaker 5: Joe was in the middle of the fight, okay.
- 14:54Speaker 4: And I'm like, man, this dude here, this dude is
- 14:56Speaker 4: not regular.
- 14:57Speaker 5: You know what I'm saying, But because we had a
- 14:59Speaker 5: good d fence that year and the defensive.
- 15:02Speaker 4: They were hard nosed that Joe was going toe to
- 15:04Speaker 4: toe with him.
- 15:05Speaker 5: But you know, that year was so crazy, and you know,
- 15:08Speaker 5: every year, like Jimmy said, every game, it got better
- 15:12Speaker 5: and better. Right, So when Jamal started taking off, you know,
- 15:16Speaker 5: everybody was getting excited. And I just told my wife,
- 15:19Speaker 5: I'm like, you don't understand what's going on right now,
- 15:22Speaker 5: Like this dude is playing on a big stage, like
- 15:26Speaker 5: in the National.
- 15:27Speaker 4: Championship game and kind of like leading the team.
- 15:29Speaker 5: And you know, it's like this is awesome, you know,
- 15:32Speaker 5: So it really like took off. It was thee They
- 15:36Speaker 5: were the best college team ever.
- 15:38Speaker 2: You know, they are back back at LSU.
- 15:41Speaker 3: You know I started when we'd see each other and
- 15:43Speaker 3: he maybe again, like he said five rows.
- 15:46Speaker 2: From us or whatever, and I, uh, he'd say, what
- 15:50Speaker 2: do you think?
- 15:50Speaker 3: And I'd say we got to have three today from
- 15:53Speaker 3: Jamar or two and he'd.
- 15:56Speaker 2: Either agree with me or he'd add one. A lot.
- 15:58Speaker 3: So we kind of still still do that and and
- 16:03Speaker 3: and that that relationship between Joe and Jamar. I'll give
- 16:06Speaker 3: you another example. After the National championship game. You know,
- 16:09Speaker 3: they they snapped the ball. Joe has the ball and
- 16:13Speaker 3: uh later that that night, because that that ball is pretty.
- 16:17Speaker 2: Valuable, uh national championship ball. And I said, uh, uh hey, Joe,
- 16:22Speaker 2: where's that ball? I want to take it home with
- 16:24Speaker 2: us and stuff.
- 16:24Speaker 3: And he said, I gave it to Jamar And I said,
- 16:27Speaker 3: you want gave it to Jamar? I said, uh, you know,
- 16:30Speaker 3: your dad might have liked that. And he said, Dad,
- 16:32Speaker 3: Jamar had like one hundred and fifty yards passing yards
- 16:35Speaker 3: that day or something.
- 16:36Speaker 2: He deserves that ball. So that's that's just again, how
- 16:39Speaker 2: how those two guys roll together.
- 16:42Speaker 4: Yeah, I have that ball.
- 16:44Speaker 3: I figured out we have so many things that a
- 16:47Speaker 3: lot of times our sons just they get so many
- 16:50Speaker 3: different things that, uh, you know, winning is still the
- 16:54Speaker 3: most important.
- 16:55Speaker 2: So we we do.
- 16:56Speaker 3: Get get a lot of things that that that maybe
- 16:59Speaker 3: they they either don't have room for in their in
- 17:02Speaker 3: their house choose to to to not not display it.
- 17:07Speaker 3: But we'll take care of that.
- 17:10Speaker 1: So one of the happiest moments of my life as
- 17:12Speaker 1: a sports fan was the semi final game against Oklahoma
- 17:16Speaker 1: because at that point we know that the Bengals have
- 17:18Speaker 1: the number one pick in the NFL draft. Joe goes
- 17:21Speaker 1: out and throws seven touchdown passes in the first half.
- 17:24Speaker 1: Jamar was completely unstoppable. Now, we didn't know that we
- 17:26Speaker 1: would get Jamar at that point, but that was kind
- 17:29Speaker 1: of my favorite Joe and Jamar college story. Do you
- 17:33Speaker 1: guys have a favorite moment of favorite game, something that's
- 17:36Speaker 1: etched in your memory from the connection between your two
- 17:39Speaker 1: sons at the college level. Jimmy Burrow, you go first.
- 17:44Speaker 2: I think for me, it's still the national championship.
- 17:48Speaker 3: You know, Joe had had lost a tough state championship
- 17:51Speaker 3: game is his senior year, and so so that was
- 17:55Speaker 3: always only his mind to win a championship. And then
- 18:00Speaker 3: you know, we got behind fairly quickly to Clemson, so
- 18:05Speaker 3: we're going, oh, no, this this could.
- 18:07Speaker 2: Be a problem.
- 18:09Speaker 3: But uh, just the way they came back and dominated
- 18:13Speaker 3: and and to see all those guys on the stage,
- 18:16Speaker 3: you know, that's that's about as proud as as a
- 18:19Speaker 3: parent could could get to know, one they're undefeated, and
- 18:23Speaker 3: two they just won the national championship and accomplished. Really,
- 18:29Speaker 3: why Joe why he went to LSU was to have
- 18:32Speaker 3: a chance to win that national championship.
- 18:34Speaker 2: So, uh, that was pretty incredible.
- 18:37Speaker 1: Do you have a moment, Jimmy Chase.
- 18:39Speaker 5: Yeah, I'll say it was the National championship game too,
- 18:42Speaker 5: because like, Jamal has never won a championship in football.
- 18:46Speaker 5: He lost the state championship in high school to Clyde
- 18:50Speaker 5: Edward Hilaire. I'm still mad about that, okay, but that
- 18:53Speaker 5: was his teammate. But we lost the high school championship
- 18:57Speaker 5: and that was his first real championship. He didn't win
- 19:01Speaker 5: anything in parkball and football he won. Jamal is a
- 19:05Speaker 5: basketball player. So anyway, in the National Championship game, I
- 19:11Speaker 5: was like, Joe has the confidence to keep going to
- 19:15Speaker 5: him in this big game, you know it, because it's like,
- 19:18Speaker 5: like Jimmy said, we was behind and we had to
- 19:21Speaker 5: come back from behind, and Joe was going to Jamal.
- 19:25Speaker 5: Now nobody else seeing this, but this is when I'm like,
- 19:27Speaker 5: y'all don't understand what's going Joe much really believing this,
- 19:30Speaker 5: dude if he's drawing it, because Joe is not gonna
- 19:32Speaker 5: throw you the ball if he don't have confidence.
- 19:35Speaker 4: I'm gonna tell you that, all right.
- 19:37Speaker 5: So Joe Borrow is Jeorge Jamal to ball and everybody's
- 19:40Speaker 5: all exciting and dancing and singing, you know, happy because
- 19:43Speaker 5: they winning and they catch the ball, and I just
- 19:46Speaker 5: sat down. I was like, this is unbelievable.
- 19:48Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying.
- 19:49Speaker 5: This is the National Championship game, televised game for the championship,
- 19:54Speaker 5: and my son is a big part of it.
- 19:56Speaker 4: And yeah, that was a real uh proud pop up
- 20:00Speaker 4: moment for me.
- 20:01Speaker 3: Jeremy says, Joe, if you drop a ball or two,
- 20:05Speaker 3: he's not going to throw it back to you. Sot, Jamal,
- 20:09Speaker 3: That's true.
- 20:12Speaker 1: All right, Let's fast forward to the twenty twenty one draft.
- 20:16Speaker 1: Jimmy Burrow. Did Joe tell you he's always been kind
- 20:20Speaker 1: of coy about what he said to the Bengals. Did
- 20:22Speaker 1: Joe tell you that he wanted the Bengals to select Jamar?
- 20:27Speaker 2: Yes?
- 20:29Speaker 3: I think we figured that and eventually, yes, he pretty
- 20:35Speaker 3: much told us that he wanted Jamar and he thought, well,
- 20:41Speaker 3: he just knew how good a player, how great a
- 20:43Speaker 3: player he was. And you know, Jamar is not only
- 20:46Speaker 3: a great football player on the field, he's a locker
- 20:50Speaker 3: room and influenced too, And Joe knew how he'd fit
- 20:54Speaker 3: into the culture of the Bengals and how he'd be
- 20:57Speaker 3: able to interact with his teammates. So it all added
- 20:59Speaker 3: up and and uh, and that's who we we wanted
- 21:04Speaker 3: to Robin and I, I mean, once you see somebody
- 21:07Speaker 3: do the things we saw Jamar, do you know, there's not.
- 21:11Speaker 2: Not many like him, and we needed him.
- 21:14Speaker 3: And uh, that's that's who Joe wanted to draft.
- 21:18Speaker 1: Also, Jimmy Chase, were you hoping that Jamar would be
- 21:21Speaker 1: reunited with Joe Burrow and Cincinnati?
- 21:25Speaker 2: No tool for those guys.
- 21:31Speaker 4: I was like, I don't know anything about Cincinnati.
- 21:34Speaker 5: They's not really that good right now, So why don't
- 21:37Speaker 5: we just go to South Beach?
- 21:39Speaker 2: Right?
- 21:39Speaker 5: I could sit on the I could sit on the beach. Wise,
- 21:42Speaker 5: Jamal I didn't work on the team.
- 21:43Speaker 4: Right.
- 21:44Speaker 5: But it was like a week before the draft. Jamal
- 21:47Speaker 5: said that Joe text me, and I'm like, okay, he
- 21:51Speaker 5: was like, so he was all excited, Jamar is real
- 21:54Speaker 5: even killed, But Joe text him. He didn't say what
- 21:56Speaker 5: he said, you know, but he said, Joe just texted me.
- 21:59Speaker 5: So he had to Joe, like one a text with
- 22:01Speaker 5: Joe once or twice that week, right, And then he
- 22:04Speaker 5: told me, he said, then if I get with Joe
- 22:06Speaker 5: We're gonna kill. I said, Look, I say, I like
- 22:10Speaker 5: Joe and everything, but Cincinnati, Jamal, I don't know about that.
- 22:14Speaker 5: It's like I'm just telling you, if I get with Joe,
- 22:17Speaker 5: We're gonna kill. So he was all excited about getting
- 22:20Speaker 5: with Joe, but the draft was so crazy because they
- 22:23Speaker 5: had three other teams that was trying to get us
- 22:26Speaker 5: before Cincinnati. And you know, Jamo was just sitting there waiting.
- 22:31Speaker 5: But he knew if he got with Joe Borrow, it
- 22:34Speaker 5: was gonna be a different story, you know.
- 22:36Speaker 4: I mean, I liked Joe, I didn't like Cincinnati, you
- 22:39Speaker 4: know what I'm saying.
- 22:40Speaker 3: We got with Jimmy and Talla, I think the day
- 22:44Speaker 3: or two after they first got to Cincinnati, and we
- 22:47Speaker 3: met up for breakfast or launch, I can't remember, and uh,
- 22:51Speaker 3: we eased their their minds about how great Cincinnati was
- 22:55Speaker 3: and the weather is not that bad, which you know
- 22:57Speaker 3: at times they found out it is. But they had concerns,
- 23:02Speaker 3: and you know, we were there for him, and like
- 23:05Speaker 3: he said, they didn't know anything about Cincinnati. We at
- 23:08Speaker 3: least we're two and a half hours away so and
- 23:12Speaker 3: we'd been there years.
- 23:13Speaker 2: So it all worked out.
- 23:15Speaker 5: Yes, No, that was like the best thing that could
- 23:18Speaker 5: happen to us, and he showed me how much did
- 23:21Speaker 5: I know? You know, how much I knew about stuff,
- 23:24Speaker 5: you know, because he likes doing that. But he proved
- 23:27Speaker 5: me right, I mean proved me wrong. And I'm happy now.
- 23:30Speaker 5: Cincinnati is the best thing that could happen to Jamal
- 23:34Speaker 5: because it's the kind of town that's like right up
- 23:38Speaker 5: his alley. He's not a row rock guy. He doesn't
- 23:41Speaker 5: like to run the streets. He doesn't like all the hoopla.
- 23:44Speaker 4: You know.
- 23:44Speaker 5: He could just sit back and relax in Cincinnati and
- 23:48Speaker 5: just enjoy it, you know, and be himself.
- 23:52Speaker 1: Jimmy Jay, Just so you know, I grew up near Buffalo.
- 23:56Speaker 1: I went to college in Syracuse, New York. Cincinnati is
- 23:59Speaker 1: a tropical pair nice in my opinion.
- 24:03Speaker 3: Yeah, he did move south at least I did.
- 24:08Speaker 1: Let me ask each of you about the other guy's son,
- 24:12Speaker 1: Jimmy Chase, what do you admire most about Joe Burrow.
- 24:17Speaker 5: Joe is a tough competitor, right, Joe. He's a tough
- 24:21Speaker 5: competitor and he's smart.
- 24:24Speaker 4: Right.
- 24:24Speaker 5: I seen it myself, Like the year his last year
- 24:27Speaker 5: at LSU, I used to go to all the practice
- 24:29Speaker 5: and Joe would come out of the locker room and
- 24:34Speaker 5: I would be like standing on the wall by the bicycle.
- 24:37Speaker 5: Joe would always get on a bicycle before practice. I
- 24:41Speaker 5: never said anything to him, but you know, he was there.
- 24:43Speaker 4: I was there. He'd seen me. I seen him. But
- 24:46Speaker 4: it was in the.
- 24:49Speaker 5: Fiesta bot right, Joe got cold cocked like he drew
- 24:53Speaker 5: an interception and he was running to go make the
- 24:56Speaker 5: tackle and the guy blindsided him. And I'm like, oh lord,
- 25:00Speaker 5: it is over for us. Now, the game is over.
- 25:03Speaker 5: And Joe got on his knees and he got on
- 25:05Speaker 5: said this dude is getting up. And when he got up,
- 25:09Speaker 5: he went nuts, right. And the thing that reminds me
- 25:14Speaker 5: Jamar is the same way. If you hit him, they're
- 25:17Speaker 5: gonna hit you back. And that's what I see in Joe.
- 25:20Speaker 5: If you hit him, he's gonna hit you back. He's
- 25:22Speaker 5: not gonna take a look. He's not gonna lay down, right,
- 25:25Speaker 5: He's gonna fight, scratch and claw. And I mean, I
- 25:28Speaker 5: love that. He's a tough cookie and he's real smart, right,
- 25:33Speaker 5: He's real smart.
- 25:34Speaker 4: That's all I'm gonna say about that.
- 25:36Speaker 1: Jimmy Burrow, what do you admire about Jamar.
- 25:39Speaker 3: Well, his his athleticism is it's just out of this world.
- 25:44Speaker 3: I mean, if you if you see him in person,
- 25:48Speaker 3: the way he's bill, the way he runs, the way
- 25:50Speaker 3: he jumps. I've always said he could play linebacker, he
- 25:54Speaker 3: could play running back, he can play safety, you know
- 26:00Speaker 3: if if if they really wanted him to be a
- 26:02Speaker 3: tight end, he could he could line up in there
- 26:05Speaker 3: if they said.
- 26:08Speaker 2: Uh, but you know that's that's extraordinary.
- 26:13Speaker 3: And uh, it's it's crazy how how much how good
- 26:18Speaker 3: of an athlete he is. And then and this is
- 26:20Speaker 3: kind of I think the way both of them roll
- 26:24Speaker 3: is is Uh. The one thing I admire about about
- 26:27Speaker 3: Jamar and and it carries to Joe too, is how
- 26:31Speaker 3: hard they work and how.
- 26:32Speaker 2: Much they like practice. Uh.
- 26:35Speaker 3: I mean those guys are out there joking around and
- 26:37Speaker 3: and uh having fun. But then you know when when
- 26:40Speaker 3: the huddle happens, you know they're all all business, but
- 26:44Speaker 3: they're they're willing to work. And uh, you know a
- 26:47Speaker 3: lot of people say, well, everything looks so easy for
- 26:51Speaker 3: for Jamar Well, it's not because how athletic it is.
- 26:56Speaker 2: It's it's how hard he works.
- 26:58Speaker 3: To to be able to to show that athleticism So
- 27:01Speaker 3: that's that's something that I think is very admirable about Jamar.
- 27:06Speaker 5: Another thing that a lot a lot of people don't
- 27:08Speaker 5: know is that, you know, during the COVID year, when
- 27:11Speaker 5: he set out, everybody was like, what he's going to do,
- 27:14Speaker 5: how he's gonna look, he's been sitting for a whole year.
- 27:17Speaker 5: Jamal did not sit for a whole year during that
- 27:19Speaker 5: COVID year. When he set out, he worked out like
- 27:22Speaker 5: every day, almost twice a day.
- 27:24Speaker 4: I had to really like slow him down, like, no.
- 27:27Speaker 5: Dad, I gotta, I gotta do this because you know,
- 27:30Speaker 5: I didn't play, and he tried to over compensate for
- 27:33Speaker 5: not playing, and I had to slow him down because
- 27:36Speaker 5: he was He's a gym rat.
- 27:37Speaker 4: You know, he's a gym rat.
- 27:40Speaker 1: I posted a picture of the two of you guys
- 27:42Speaker 1: together at a Bengals practice recently, and Bengals fans went nuts.
- 27:46Speaker 1: They loved the fact that you two guys seem to
- 27:48Speaker 1: be such good buddies. Why did the two families hit
- 27:51Speaker 1: it off so well?
- 27:54Speaker 4: Well?
- 27:54Speaker 3: I think again, Uh, you know, we knew that that
- 27:59Speaker 3: Jamar and Joe had become over the years really good friends.
- 28:04Speaker 4: There.
- 28:04Speaker 3: As we said, there there's a lot of similarities in
- 28:07Speaker 3: the two you know, there just the way they handle things,
- 28:11Speaker 3: their mannerisms when they get together. You know, it's like
- 28:15Speaker 3: a couple of old junior high classmates or something. And
- 28:20Speaker 3: we also know how important each one of them is
- 28:24Speaker 3: to to to the other, and so that creates even
- 28:27Speaker 3: more of a bond. But uh, you know, I grew
- 28:29Speaker 3: up in Mississippi. It's not New Orleans, but it's truly
- 28:34Speaker 3: the South. So I think that that helps too, that
- 28:39Speaker 3: you know, I know what the culture really is down there.
- 28:42Speaker 2: My wife's been been down there enough to to understand
- 28:46Speaker 2: what it's like.
- 28:47Speaker 3: So you know, that creates even more of a bond
- 28:50Speaker 3: between us.
- 28:52Speaker 1: Give me chase.
- 28:54Speaker 5: It's like we really like the same type of people,
- 28:56Speaker 5: you know, fun loving people, like to have a good time, uh,
- 29:00Speaker 5: care about their kids, you know, and just all around
- 29:04Speaker 5: good people.
- 29:05Speaker 4: You know.
- 29:05Speaker 5: Then we find out, I think another thing is like
- 29:08Speaker 5: we're the only ones that we can really talk to,
- 29:11Speaker 5: you know, because we experienced so many similar things, you know,
- 29:15Speaker 5: and it's like, you know, as we get into this
- 29:19Speaker 5: next level and things are evolving, you know, it's like
- 29:22Speaker 5: who do we able? Who are we able to turn to?
- 29:25Speaker 5: So we was able to turn to them, and they
- 29:27Speaker 5: helped us out a lot. And at the same time,
- 29:29Speaker 5: I guess we was like a buffer for them because
- 29:32Speaker 5: they were able to be relax and be themselves.
- 29:34Speaker 4: You know. So it just it just happened, you know
- 29:38Speaker 4: what I'm saying.
- 29:39Speaker 5: It just happened. And then Jimmy like oysters. Okay, so
- 29:43Speaker 5: hey I.
- 29:44Speaker 2: Do Oh yeah, I like it.
- 29:48Speaker 3: Jimmy tells me I go to the wrong place in
- 29:51Speaker 3: New Orleans though, Like, so next time down there, I'm
- 29:54Speaker 3: going to whatever he tells me to go to.
- 29:57Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 30:00Speaker 1: I read correctly that the two of you guys have
- 30:02Speaker 1: some sort of pregame superstition involving seeing each other at
- 30:05Speaker 1: the tailgate before the game begins.
- 30:08Speaker 3: We tried to and I think it's a little more
- 30:11Speaker 3: Robin and Talia. Uh, we joined in on that. So
- 30:16Speaker 3: if we mess them at our at our tailgate, Uh,
- 30:19Speaker 3: you know, we we try to find find a way.
- 30:21Speaker 3: We used to be in the stands now you know,
- 30:24Speaker 3: we're up in the suite area. But uh, yeah, we've
- 30:29Speaker 3: been over overcome. Not not communing, but but we'd prefer
- 30:35Speaker 3: knowing that we've seen each other and been with each other,
- 30:37Speaker 3: even if it's for a quick wave from a cross
- 30:40Speaker 3: play or something.
- 30:43Speaker 4: They were. They was winning.
- 30:44Speaker 5: The Bengals was winning, so we didn't want to do
- 30:47Speaker 5: anything to stop them.
- 30:48Speaker 4: From winning, that's right, So we stayed with you.
- 30:51Speaker 5: Well, you know, the last time we went, we seen
- 30:53Speaker 5: Robin and Jimmy, let's go find them again, you know,
- 30:56Speaker 5: and it just happened like that, and yeah, it works.
- 31:00Speaker 1: Okay, Yeah, don't don't mess with the mojo. Half of
- 31:03Speaker 1: Bengals fans. Don't mess with the mojo. Final thing for
- 31:06Speaker 1: you two guys, and I appreciate your time. I think
- 31:08Speaker 1: Bengals fans want to know. Should we feel confident that
- 31:12Speaker 1: Joe and Jamar are going to be NFL teammates for
- 31:15Speaker 1: a long long time. They're both nearing the point where
- 31:19Speaker 1: they're going to get massive contract extensions. What do you think,
- 31:22Speaker 1: Jimmy Burrow, you go first.
- 31:24Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean that's that's what we want. And and
- 31:28Speaker 3: you know that that's other teammates too. We we we we.
- 31:32Speaker 2: Want them with the Bengals as long as possible.
- 31:37Speaker 3: You know, as I said that the bond that they
- 31:40Speaker 3: have with each other and and how each other lanes
- 31:44Speaker 3: on it on the other and relies on the other,
- 31:46Speaker 3: I mean there's no way you'd want those two not
- 31:50Speaker 3: not being to gather. And uh, you know, contract extensions
- 31:54Speaker 3: and negotiations are are complex and they take a while,
- 31:58Speaker 3: and uh that I'm confident that those two guys will
- 32:02Speaker 3: be together for really their whole careers.
- 32:07Speaker 4: Well, I definitely want them to be together.
- 32:09Speaker 5: And I think Jamaar does too, you know, because I
- 32:13Speaker 5: was talking to him one time and I was telling him,
- 32:18Speaker 5: you know, this is the NFL and this is a
- 32:20Speaker 5: business also, so you know, you might have to go
- 32:23Speaker 5: find another quarterback.
- 32:24Speaker 4: He was like, no, death, I'm staying with Joe. I'm
- 32:28Speaker 4: not going to know us, you know. So we want
- 32:30Speaker 4: to be there, you know.
- 32:31Speaker 5: Hopefully everything will work out and he can be there
- 32:35Speaker 5: forever the whole time with Joe, because it's rough when
- 32:39Speaker 5: you're receiving you don't have a quarterback. Okay, we don't
- 32:42Speaker 5: have time to go find quarterbacks and discover guys.
- 32:45Speaker 1: And we're good right where we're at. Okay, that's music
- 32:49Speaker 1: to all of our ears. Fellas. I can't thank you
- 32:53Speaker 1: enough for doing this today. I want to command both
- 32:55Speaker 1: of you and your wives on raising two great kids.
- 32:59Speaker 1: They're obviously spectacular football players. That goes without saying, but
- 33:03Speaker 1: they're polite, they're respectful, they've got great attitudes, tremendous work ethic.
- 33:08Speaker 1: We are thrilled that they are Cincinnati Bengals. Thank you
- 33:11Speaker 1: so much. Happy Father's Day weekend, and we look forward
- 33:15Speaker 1: to seeing you on the road to the super Bowl
- 33:17Speaker 1: in twenty twenty three.
