- 0:00Genesis chapter 48. Let us pray our God, you are
- 0:05higher, you are greater, you are better.
- 0:08You are more mighty than anything we could ever try to
- 0:11come up with in our own minds. God, you rule all over the
- 0:15Galaxy, all over the universe. There is no one higher than you.
- 0:18God, you have preeminence. You are the highest, most
- 0:22loftiest idea in all of literature.
- 0:24God, you are the grandest entity in our lives, so we give you
- 0:31your due respect. We give you your due honor.
- 0:37God, we lay down like dead men at your feet.
- 0:41We're asking God for a touch. Gird up our loin so that we can
- 0:45stand in your holy presence. Father, we love you.
- 0:48We love everything about you. Speak to us today.
- 0:51Here we are, we're listening. God, speak to us in whichever
- 0:55way you want to. God, we are your servants.
- 0:59We're your bond servants. We willfully attach ourselves
- 1:03unto you, God, the God of Israel.
- 1:07We thank you, Lord, for revealing yourself unto us, for
- 1:10giving us the Holy Scriptures. We thank you, God, that you
- 1:14chose us and predestined us before the foundations of the
- 1:18earth. But God help us to make those
- 1:20decisions and to use our free will.
- 1:23God, to choose you every single day, every minute, and every
- 1:27single situation, we choose you. God, you are worthy to be
- 1:32praised. You are our everything.
- 1:36You are All in all. You're the great I am, and
- 1:40Father, Father us, thank you Jesus, for the cross and for the
- 1:45spilled blood. We call upon the name of Jesus
- 1:48today and receive our salvation. We believe that you, God, raised
- 1:53him from the dead. And Holy Spirit, we thank you
- 1:57for helping us. Give us conviction today.
- 2:05Fill us today. I decrease as you increase.
- 2:09Jesus come and have your way in our lives.
- 2:12It's in your holy and precious and powerful awesome name that I
- 2:16pray. Amen.
- 2:20Well, let's start in verse one. And it came to pass after these
- 2:26things that one told Joseph, behold, your father is sick.
- 2:33And he took with him his two sons, Vanessa and Ephraim.
- 2:38So here we're going to get to see this little change of
- 2:40events. And we know that Jacob also
- 2:43called Israel. We know that he's at his last
- 2:48days. Let's see how it goes.
- 2:50Verse 2. And one told Jacob and said,
- 2:53behold, your son Joseph comes to you.
- 2:56And Israel strengthened himself and sat up in the bed.
- 3:02So here the news comes first to Joseph and says, hey, your dad's
- 3:06about to die. And then here comes the news
- 3:10unto Jacob that says, your son's on his way to see you before you
- 3:14pass. So he strengthens himself in the
- 3:17Lord, and he sits up in his bed. Three.
- 3:22And Jacob said to Joseph, God Almighty appeared to me at loves
- 3:28in the land of Canaan and blessed me.
- 3:30So this is the ladder that went up in Bethel.
- 3:34And he saw the Son of man ascending and descending, the
- 3:39angels ascending and descending upon the Son of man.
- 3:42We saw this ladder that went up. And he said, surely God is in
- 3:46this place, and I did not know it.
- 3:48And he's remembering this when God became unto him, when he was
- 3:54no longer just the God of Isaac and the God of Abraham, but when
- 3:58he became the God of Israel, is what is mentioned here.
- 4:02And he blessed him for and said to me, Behold, I will make you
- 4:07fruitful and multiply you, and I will make of you a multitude of
- 4:11people, and I will give this land to your seed after you for
- 4:15an everlasting possession. So here Jacob is very careful to
- 4:21meticulously say everything exactly the way that God had
- 4:27told him. And he told him that he was
- 4:29going to bless him and make him into a mighty nation, and that
- 4:32he was going to bring him back and give him all the land of
- 4:35Canaan. 5 And now your two sons, Ephraim and Manessa, which were
- 4:43born to you in the land of Egypt before I came unto you in Egypt,
- 4:49are mine. As Reuben and Simeon, they shall
- 4:53be mine. So we remember Reuben and
- 4:55Simeon, and they're disgusting, deplorable acts, and we know
- 5:02that they were disqualified. And so Manasseh and Ephraim are
- 5:08like unto him as this first born and second born, and he's giving
- 5:13them a place of honor. And we know that later on we're
- 5:17going to see the entire northern Kingdom of Israel called
- 5:22Ephraim. 6 And your issue, but you bigot, after them shall be
- 5:30yours, and shall be called after the name of their brothers and
- 5:34their inheritance. So he's giving them a very high
- 5:38lofty position within the 12 tribes of Israel.
- 5:43And it's always 12 no matter how you look at it.
- 5:47You can look at it from all different kinds of angles and
- 5:51still come up with 12 and you need to know that 7 When?
- 5:59As for me, when I came from Padan, Rachel died by me in the
- 6:03land of Canaan, in the way, when Yet there was but a little way
- 6:08to come unto Ephra, and I buried her there in the way of Ephra.
- 6:13The same is Bethlehem, and we know that Jesus Christ was born
- 6:18in Bethlehem, and here he is remembering his beloved wife
- 6:23that he was so incredibly tender with, and he is remembering her
- 6:29and honoring her, and letting Joseph know that that is where
- 6:34she is buried, and not to stay in the land of Egypt. 8 And
- 6:40Israel beheld Joseph's sons, and said, Who are these nine?
- 6:45And Joseph said unto his father, They are my sons, and God has
- 6:49given me in this place. And he said, Bring them, I pray
- 6:53you, to me, and I will bless them.
- 6:56So here he is going to bestow a blessing upon them. 10 Now the
- 7:03eyes of Israel were dim for age, so that he could not see.
- 7:06And he brought them near to him, and he kissed them, and he
- 7:10embraced them. Look at how here in his last
- 7:13days he's tender with Joseph's children. 11 And Israel said to
- 7:18Joseph, I had not thought to see your face, and lo, God has
- 7:22showed me also your seed. So he thought that Joseph was
- 7:26dead. But not only did God bring
- 7:28Joseph back into his life, but he also, Israel was able to see
- 7:34and now bless Joseph's children, which was unthinkable just a
- 7:39short time before this. 12 And Joseph brought them out from
- 7:45between his knees, and he bowed himself with his face to the
- 7:49earth. So here Joseph is showing
- 7:52complete reverence unto his father. 13 And Joseph took them
- 7:57both, Ephraim in his right hand toward Israel's left, and
- 8:02Manessa in his left hand towards Israel's right hand, and brought
- 8:08them near to him. So here Manessa was the oldest,
- 8:14and here you're going to find out that Israel is going to
- 8:19cross his arms when he blesses them.
- 8:23And Joseph intentionally put the oldest one at Israel's right
- 8:28hand. And it is no different than when
- 8:31we know that Jesus sits at the right hand of the Father.
- 8:35We know that this is a place of positional authority.
- 8:38And so it was right for Israel to put his right hand on
- 8:42Manessa. But instead he flips the script
- 8:46and he switches up and he crosses his arms and he puts his
- 8:51right hand on the younger 14 in Israel, stretched out his right
- 8:55hand and laid it upon Ephraim's hand, who was the younger in his
- 9:00left hand upon Manessa's head, guiding his hands wittingly.
- 9:05For Manessa was the first born. He knew what he was doing,
- 9:09friends, He did the cross up on him. 15 And he blessed Joseph
- 9:15and said, God, before whom my father's Abraham and Isaac did
- 9:20walk, the God which fed me all my life long unto this day.
- 9:26So he's remembering how God is the one who took care of him.
- 9:31He fed him, He sustained him, and we have that same
- 9:35inheritance. And Jesus Christ told us with
- 9:39food and clothing, be content. He feeds the birds of the air.
- 9:45He clothes the lilies of the field.
- 9:48We do not need to be so preoccupied with all of the
- 9:52extra. We need contentment, friends.
- 9:55That is what we desperately need in this hour.
- 9:59We do not need to be distracted by all of the pretty things that
- 10:03are being dangled in front of us. 16 The Angel which redeemed
- 10:11me from all evil blessed the lads and let my name be named on
- 10:17them in the name of my father Abraham and Isaac, and let them
- 10:23grow into a multitude of the midst of the earth.
- 10:26So here he's blessing Joseph, and now he is collectively
- 10:31blessing the sons. 17 And when Joseph saw that his father laid
- 10:38his right hand upon the head of Ephraim, had displeased him, and
- 10:43he held up his father's hand to remove it from Ephraim's head
- 10:47unto Manessa's head. 18 And Joseph said unto his father, Not
- 10:53so, my father, for this is the first born, Put your right hand
- 10:57upon his head. 19 And his father refused and said, I know it, my
- 11:04son, I know it. He also shall become a good
- 11:10people, he also shall become a people, and he also shall be
- 11:14great. But truly his younger brother
- 11:18shall be greater than he, and his seeds shall become a
- 11:24multitude of nations. So here we can see that Jacob
- 11:30knew what he was doing when he crossed up his arms and Joseph
- 11:33was confused. But he bestows a greater measure
- 11:38of blessing upon the younger. And we're going to see that
- 11:41played out through scripture of why he did that.
- 11:44And God already knows the beginning from the end.
- 11:47And nothing is a secret to God and nothing is a surprise.
- 11:51God already knows. That is why He has predestined
- 11:55and chosen. That is why we are the elect
- 11:57friends. Because God already knows he's
- 12:00at the end. He's the alpha and the Omega.
- 12:02He already knows how many people are going to be there.
- 12:05He already knows who's going to be there, so he can step into
- 12:09our time in such a time as this, and he can interject even in
- 12:12people who seemingly don't care anything for him, he still
- 12:17protects them because he knows that they're going to surrender
- 12:21to him. What an amazing thought. 20 And
- 12:31he blessed them that day, saying, In you shall Israel
- 12:34bless, saying, God make you as Ephraim and as Manessa.
- 12:39And he set Ephraim before Manessa. 21 And Israel said to
- 12:44Joseph, Behold, I die, but God shall be with you, and bring you
- 12:51again unto the land of your Father's.
- 12:53So here he is prophesying that they will go back to their land,
- 13:00they will not stay in Egypt. 22 Moreover, I have given to you
- 13:06one portion above your brothers, which I took out of the hand of
- 13:11the amorite with my sword and with my bow.
- 13:13So here there is an unmentioned battle that Jacob had and he
- 13:20took it out of the Amorite's hand and now he bestows a double
- 13:24blessing upon Joseph. Because not only is Joseph
- 13:28blessed as if he was the oldest and had the birthright, but then
- 13:34also you could see here that he split it between the two sons,
- 13:39which is why it is called a double blessing because Joseph's
- 13:43portion went to two. So it's not 13 friends, it's not
- 13:4913 tribes, it's still 12, but Joseph represents the two.
- 13:53What an amazing thought. I hope you've been blessed by
- 13:57this amazing chapter in God's Word.
- 14:00I know I sure have. I'm praying for every single one
- 14:03of you. I love you.
- 14:04We'll see you back here tomorrow.
- 14:06God bless you.
