- 0:02Speaker 1: Boston Globe Red Sox be writer Tim Haley back on
- 0:05Speaker 1: the show. Tim, thanks for joining us man. I thought
- 0:07Speaker 1: it was important to catch up. It's been fun times
- 0:10Speaker 1: for you covering the team. You went from covering the
- 0:12Speaker 1: dramatic Mets for years to now the dramatic Red Sox.
- 0:15Speaker 1: How you doing and how was the interaction with Wilson
- 0:19Speaker 1: Contreras in the locker room yesterday? It sounded like he
- 0:22Speaker 1: was saying some things.
- 0:24Speaker 2: He It's been interesting to cover Wilson Contrera's for this
- 0:29Speaker 2: month plus of season and spring training. He's a guy who,
- 0:33Speaker 2: and I give him a lot of credit for it,
- 0:35Speaker 2: is not afraid to speak his mind and be honest.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Last year or last month in Saint Louis, stood up
- 0:43Speaker 2: in front of the hitters meeting first day of the
- 0:44Speaker 2: series and pleaded with teammates to have more energy in
- 0:48Speaker 2: the dugout during games, and that seemed to work for
- 0:51Speaker 2: a couple of days. Yesterday Red Sox lose again an
- 0:55Speaker 2: ugly one in ten innings to a fellow bad team
- 0:59Speaker 2: in the Astros, and I Wilsonnuris was asked, our guys,
- 1:06Speaker 2: our hitters maybe trying too hard over the past week,
- 1:09Speaker 2: especially over the weekend because they want to have a
- 1:12Speaker 2: good start in this fresh start as decreed by the
- 1:16Speaker 2: front office and firing Alex core and a bunch of
- 1:18Speaker 2: his coaches, right like, you know, if the season is
- 1:21Speaker 2: starting over, our guys maybe just wanting it too much.
- 1:25Speaker 2: And Wilson Conturer said, actually, no, guys aren't wanting too much.
- 1:29Speaker 2: They're not too tense. In fact, everybody is looser, more relaxed.
- 1:34Speaker 2: They took a big exhale with Alex Korra no longer
- 1:38Speaker 2: in the dugout, and I asked the obvious follow up
- 1:42Speaker 2: question of why did the tension go away? And he
- 1:46Speaker 2: said he didn't know. He hadn't dug into it that much.
- 1:48Speaker 2: But you know, it is what it is. Everybody is
- 1:53Speaker 2: looser in the eyes of Wilson contreres. Now is that
- 1:56Speaker 2: translating to more wins? It is not. The Red Sox
- 2:00Speaker 2: are three and four since they fired Alex Kra one
- 2:03Speaker 2: percentage wise, that actually might be an improvement over what
- 2:06Speaker 2: they've done on the season, But nonetheless they're not exactly
- 2:10Speaker 2: capturing lightning in a bottle right now post manager change.
- 2:15Speaker 3: Tim, is this a direct shot at Alex Cora. I mean,
- 2:17Speaker 3: I'm sorry, but if I read this, I think this
- 2:20Speaker 3: is a direct shot. And all you've ever heard from
- 2:21Speaker 3: players and everyone was how Coorra is a player's first manager,
- 2:25Speaker 3: and how he really, you know, likes the players, and
- 2:27Speaker 3: how he always has the players back. And now you
- 2:29Speaker 3: have a guy who was with alex Corra for what
- 2:32Speaker 3: two months spring training and then and he wasn't even
- 2:34Speaker 3: there for that. He was in Venezuela. Yeah, team Venezuela.
- 2:37Speaker 3: So he was with alex Corre for about twenty seven
- 2:40Speaker 3: games plus you know, a few weeks of spring training
- 2:42Speaker 3: coming out saying things are looser, Like, I don't understand
- 2:46Speaker 3: how you cannot read this as a shot directly at
- 2:48Speaker 3: Alex cor.
- 2:50Speaker 2: Yeah, it certainly can be read that way. Because Wilson
- 2:53Speaker 2: and Church didn't fully explain his thought process or his observations.
- 2:57Speaker 2: It's hard to say for sure, but it's easy to
- 3:00Speaker 2: imagine a scenario where the Red Sox get off to
- 3:03Speaker 2: a bad start to start the season. And when that happens,
- 3:06Speaker 2: as people know, heads eventually roll. So if guys were tense,
- 3:11Speaker 2: or if Alex core was tense as he often is
- 3:15Speaker 2: very intense figure because of the bad start, then I
- 3:20Speaker 2: can see how taking that variable out would make everybody
- 3:24Speaker 2: relax more, right, because if firing the manager, never mind
- 3:29Speaker 2: half the coaching staff is the nightmare scenario for late April,
- 3:34Speaker 2: and then the nightmare scenario happens, then it can't get worse. Right,
- 3:39Speaker 2: of course, everybody's going to be a relaxed So in
- 3:42Speaker 2: that sense, maybe it's less a shot at Core directly,
- 3:46Speaker 2: more just a statement of reality. But yeah, I could
- 3:49Speaker 2: totally see it being interpreted as a shot at Alex
- 3:52Speaker 2: Core Wall.
- 3:53Speaker 4: They can't get worse. I mean, like the same said
- 3:56Speaker 4: player Wilson Contrares, essentially kind of calling out the younger
- 4:00Speaker 4: guys like it like this is one of the reasons
- 4:03Speaker 4: that we're not doing good? Is this a one? Was
- 4:06Speaker 4: this a fair quote by Wilson Contreras? And two? Is
- 4:10Speaker 4: it something that I thought Marcel Meyer, whether it's true
- 4:13Speaker 4: or not, handled it really well. Is this something that
- 4:16Speaker 4: you see these guys like essentially called the young guys out,
- 4:20Speaker 4: kind of holding it against Wilson, who's going to be
- 4:23Speaker 4: there for a little bit with these guys.
- 4:25Speaker 2: I that was interesting because that idea did not first
- 4:30Speaker 2: come from Wilson Contreer's the idea that they're young players
- 4:35Speaker 2: they've either never been through a full big league season
- 4:38Speaker 2: or have never struggled in the big leagues, maybe never
- 4:41Speaker 2: struggled in their baseball lives. Alex Chorus said that all
- 4:45Speaker 2: the time before he got fired, that it's going to
- 4:48Speaker 2: be part of the deal this year for the Red Sox,
- 4:51Speaker 2: who have a ton of first and second year players.
- 4:56Speaker 2: The Red Sox, you know, look around the diamond. Roman Ante,
- 5:00Speaker 2: I mean for his full big league season, Marcelo Meyer,
- 5:02Speaker 2: same thing. Caleb Durbin technically first full big league season,
- 5:06Speaker 2: he had almost a full year last year, Carlos Narvalla's
- 5:08Speaker 2: second year, Raphaela and Abra in their third years. I think.
- 5:12Speaker 2: So there's a lot of guys who have not had
- 5:18Speaker 2: that lived experience in the majors. And Alex cor highlighted
- 5:21Speaker 2: it all the time that when you have young players,
- 5:25Speaker 2: the ups and downs are going to be more extreme
- 5:28Speaker 2: as they figure out the major leagues. When you have
- 5:31Speaker 2: a ton of young players, the team is going to
- 5:35Speaker 2: be behold into those ups and downs by the young group.
- 5:38Speaker 2: So Wilson Churis mentioned it yesterday. I honestly didn't think
- 5:42Speaker 2: much of it because it's been such a standard sentiment
- 5:46Speaker 2: around the red Sox and an understandable sentiment Marcelo Meyer.
- 5:51Speaker 2: I guess didn't like it, but I'm not making too
- 5:56Speaker 2: much of that. I guess.
- 6:00Speaker 3: Let's talk love life ft family. I know it's an
- 6:03Speaker 3: important part of everyone's life, but if you need help

- 6:53Speaker 1: details and important safety information, and we thank Blue ch
- 6:56Speaker 1: you for sponsoring the podcast.
- 7:00Speaker 3: Tim, I mean, marcell Meyer shouldn't like this.
- 7:02Speaker 4: What gives you know?
- 7:04Speaker 3: This team was built on young players, Roman, Anthony, Marcelo Meyer, right,
- 7:07Speaker 3: these have to be huge pieces for this team.
- 7:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:10Speaker 3: And so then for again, we're thirty five games in
- 7:13Speaker 3: whatever they are, you know, almost forty at the forty
- 7:16Speaker 3: game point now whatever, you know, quarter not even a
- 7:19Speaker 3: quarter of the way into the season. And you know,
- 7:21Speaker 3: if I was Marcella Myers and a young guy and
- 7:23Speaker 3: you know, a veteran guy came out and said, hey,
- 7:26Speaker 3: the young guys aren't doing their job like us veteran
- 7:28Speaker 3: guys are doing our job. Yeah, he shouldn't like that.
- 7:30Speaker 3: But doesn't this Some of this fall on Breslo in
- 7:33Speaker 3: the front office for putting this team together and saying, hey,
- 7:36Speaker 3: these young guys have to be unbelievably good or we're
- 7:39Speaker 3: not going to be able to compete.
- 7:41Speaker 2: Yes, because look at the roster and how it's split
- 7:46Speaker 2: up service time wise. Will Scintreri's veteran off to a
- 7:50Speaker 2: very solid quarter season? Almost Trevor story veteran bad quarter season?
- 7:56Speaker 2: After that, who's the next veteran like maybe Jared Duran, who's,
- 8:02Speaker 2: you know, basically an ARB guy, not doesn't exactly have
- 8:05Speaker 2: a ton of veteran status, and he's you know, has
- 8:08Speaker 2: not been good at all. So after that, everybody else
- 8:11Speaker 2: falls into the young and inexperienced bucket, either pre ARB
- 8:14Speaker 2: guys or guys who've got contracts very early. So it's
- 8:18Speaker 2: it's yes, a large part of this is the way
- 8:21Speaker 2: the roster is constructed and the veteran versus youngsters in balance.
- 8:29Speaker 2: One thing that I did not weigh heavily enough coming
- 8:34Speaker 2: into the season was the swing between Alex Bregman and
- 8:39Speaker 2: Caleb Durbin. And Caleb Durban I really like as a player.
- 8:43Speaker 2: He's been great defensively, the offense will probably come around.
- 8:46Speaker 2: He's been unlucky on on you know, babbit wise. I
- 8:49Speaker 2: think he's fine. I think he will be fine. But
- 8:53Speaker 2: Alex Bregman last year lauded from all corners of the
- 8:56Speaker 2: clubhouse and the organization for the intangibles almost to like
- 9:00Speaker 2: a mythological point. Maybe it was too much. Nonetheless, you
- 9:05Speaker 2: go to Caleb Durbin, who's a solid player but doesn't
- 9:08Speaker 2: really have that just by virtue of being one new
- 9:12Speaker 2: to the team, and two two new to the big
- 9:14Speaker 2: leagues and that's a huge, huge swing. So if they
- 9:18Speaker 2: had some other veteran leader type of guy to slide
- 9:22Speaker 2: into any position, third base, second base, wherever, first base,
- 9:27Speaker 2: they could have done that. Over the off season. They
- 9:29Speaker 2: ended up with Wolskontreras, who's been solid. Maybe it changes
- 9:33Speaker 2: the dynamic of the team, but right now they don't
- 9:36Speaker 2: have anybody really in that clubhouse to drag people out
- 9:40Speaker 2: of this and that's been a huge deal and that's
- 9:43Speaker 2: part of the way the roster was built and that's
- 9:47Speaker 2: definitely burned them.
- 9:49Speaker 4: Does Wilson before this moment, does Wilson Contreras fit into
- 9:52Speaker 4: this clubhouse? You know? How you get guys and it's like, whoa,
- 9:55Speaker 4: we got this big trade from the Cardinals, We got
- 9:57Speaker 4: Sonny Gray. How he fits into the rotation? We got
- 10:00Speaker 4: Wilson Contreras and he's playing first base? Like is there?
- 10:04Speaker 4: Did you feel or see that connection where he was
- 10:07Speaker 4: like involved with his teammates before this happened.
- 10:11Speaker 2: Yes, I think he's particularly involved in a ring leader
- 10:16Speaker 2: with the large group of Venezuelans that they have and
- 10:20Speaker 2: the Spanish speaking players more generally. Now you know he
- 10:25Speaker 2: speaks s gray English for sure, and he's one of
- 10:27Speaker 2: those guys who can cross that divide in the clubhouse.
- 10:30Speaker 2: But yes, so I do think he fits into the clubhouse.
- 10:34Speaker 2: That's not to say everybody's his best friend, but he's certainly,
- 10:37Speaker 2: like I said, one of the ring leaders socially and
- 10:42Speaker 2: you know, pregame, post game, hanging around with the guys
- 10:45Speaker 2: kind of way. Wilskonturius is right in the thick of things.
- 10:48Speaker 2: He's not some veteran mercenary comes in, does his job
- 10:52Speaker 2: and leaves right. Everybody knows those kinds of players. They're
- 10:56Speaker 2: not there to make friends or hang around extra. Wilscontreras
- 11:01Speaker 2: is part of the clubhouse. And I've never I never
- 11:05Speaker 2: perceived him before this season. I didn't know a ton
- 11:07Speaker 2: about him. I had never covered him. I didn't perceive
- 11:10Speaker 2: him as some sort of lauded veteran leader type of guy.
- 11:15Speaker 2: And I'm still not sure that he is that. But
- 11:20Speaker 2: he for a couple of rounds now including yesterday after
- 11:23Speaker 2: the loss of the Astros, has made headlines or made
- 11:28Speaker 2: a news cycle or whatever about something that he said.
- 11:32Speaker 2: And that's in part because he talks to the media
- 11:36Speaker 2: more than I think would be expected because he's one
- 11:38Speaker 2: of the few veterans who can speak to the state
- 11:42Speaker 2: of things, and he's been very good at that. I
- 11:45Speaker 2: give him a lot of credit. After he got hit
- 11:47Speaker 2: by the Brewers, who he hates, he went up there
- 11:49Speaker 2: and said what he said, He's going to go after
- 11:50Speaker 2: the Brewiers if they hit him again. And I give
- 11:53Speaker 2: nothing but plaudits to guys who speak their mind and
- 11:56Speaker 2: are honest and transparent. Wilson Contreras has been that. But
- 12:02Speaker 2: is he is he a leader in there? I don't know.
- 12:04Speaker 2: I do know an he hangs around with the guys
- 12:06Speaker 2: a lot.
- 12:07Speaker 4: All right. One of the things you said about was
- 12:09Speaker 4: all the coaches, not just Alex Corra that got fired,
- 12:12Speaker 4: but all the coaches except one of the pieces of
- 12:15Speaker 4: the team and pitching they're kind of in shambles. And
- 12:19Speaker 4: I didn't see anybody from the pitching department get axxed
- 12:23Speaker 4: in this. Is it something that the injuries and the
- 12:27Speaker 4: lack of production from some of the guys at some
- 12:31Speaker 4: points during the year says okay, well, we're not going
- 12:34Speaker 4: to fire any the pitching guys or did they just did?
- 12:36Speaker 4: They have pictures of Breslo and so they weren't weren't.
- 12:40Speaker 2: I don't know that they have pictures of Breslo, but
- 12:42Speaker 2: they're certainly Breslo guys. Breslow hires. The others who were
- 12:47Speaker 2: fired were pre Breslo guys and he inherited them, and
- 12:52Speaker 2: there were maybe not totally on the same page as
- 12:55Speaker 2: far as philosophy or instruction practice is or things along
- 13:01Speaker 2: those lines. So it is what it is. Andrew Bailey
- 13:06Speaker 2: Breslo guy. He's the pitching coach, He's the ringleader there,
- 13:10Speaker 2: and even though the pitching has not lived up to
- 13:14Speaker 2: expectations through a month plus, I think you contribute a
- 13:18Speaker 2: lot of that to injuries. Garrett Crochet in particular, hasn't
- 13:22Speaker 2: seemed right basically all season. Now he's on the injured list.
- 13:25Speaker 2: So he survived this purge. We'll see what happens the
- 13:31Speaker 2: next five months and then see what decisions the Red
- 13:33Speaker 2: Sox are ready to make at the end of the season,
- 13:35Speaker 2: depending on how the season goes. So, you know, the
- 13:39Speaker 2: core guys are gone as his core and the Breslow
- 13:41Speaker 2: guys are still here, and that's just the nature of
- 13:44Speaker 2: the business.
- 13:44Speaker 1: I guess, you know, we don't always have to do
- 13:48Speaker 1: things because that's how it's always been.
- 13:51Speaker 3: Look, people consider me old school, and I thought I was.
- 13:53Speaker 3: But then we had the pitch clock and the abs
- 13:56Speaker 3: and ban on shifts and all these things that we've
- 13:58Speaker 3: had for a long time in baseball. And you know what,
- 14:00Speaker 3: much like Mintmobile and the other mobile carriers, I'm here
- 14:03Speaker 3: for the new school and the changes that have been made.
- 14:06Speaker 2: It's a good call.

- 14:48Speaker 3: Hey Tim, what about Verita? He was reassigned within the
- 14:51Speaker 3: organization what's his new role? What's this new? They couldn't
- 14:54Speaker 3: I guess he couldn't fire him. They couldn't fire him, right,
- 14:57Speaker 3: so they had to say they're reassigning him. Has anyone
- 15:00Speaker 3: heard from Veritech what his new assignment is and how
- 15:03Speaker 3: he took this whole thing.
- 15:06Speaker 2: My understanding is he did not take it well as
- 15:09Speaker 2: could be.
- 15:09Speaker 4: Excited he gave.
- 15:11Speaker 3: Is that why thumbs down on the picture?
- 15:13Speaker 2: Yeah, as indicated by that that famous middle of the
- 15:16Speaker 2: night thumbs down. Listen the Red Sox awkward that handled
- 15:21Speaker 2: that awkwardly. He is a franchise icon, the captain, two
- 15:26Speaker 2: time World Series champion as a player, and you can't
- 15:28Speaker 2: just fire a guy like that. So the yes, they
- 15:31Speaker 2: said reassigned, My understanding is that that was not an
- 15:35Speaker 2: immediate term reassignment. It's more like a we'll talk about
- 15:39Speaker 2: it another time reassignment. Veritech not happy with what went down,
- 15:44Speaker 2: not happy with how it went down. We'll see if
- 15:47Speaker 2: that reassignment actually manifests itself in something. If he just
- 15:51Speaker 2: leaves the organization outright, it would not surprise me, but
- 15:55Speaker 2: it would be a shame because of who he is
- 15:57Speaker 2: and how long he has been with the Red Sox
- 15:59Speaker 2: ever since Night seven. We're talking basically three decades, which
- 16:03Speaker 2: is an amazing run in a variety of roles, including
- 16:06Speaker 2: most recently on the coaching staff. So I think the
- 16:10Speaker 2: Red Sox hope, and honestly my hope is that once
- 16:13Speaker 2: the dust settles a little bit and cooler heads prevailed,
- 16:16Speaker 2: maybe there is a role that's good for Veritech and
- 16:19Speaker 2: that Veritech would be okay with that role has not
- 16:23Speaker 2: been decided as of today.
- 16:26Speaker 4: All that was talked about was when when they fired Korra,
- 16:29Speaker 4: it was don't ask questions, go play baseball. Has the
- 16:33Speaker 4: Red Sox front office here now that it's a week old, Now,
- 16:38Speaker 4: had they done a better job? Have they mended some
- 16:41Speaker 4: of those fences or started at least building the bridge
- 16:44Speaker 4: to get over to mend the fences.
- 16:48Speaker 2: That's a great question. In Baltimore the day after the
- 16:52Speaker 2: firings and then in the ensuing next series in Toronto,
- 16:57Speaker 2: Greg Breslo is there as the head of baseball operations
- 17:00Speaker 2: should and needs to be and he understood that and
- 17:03Speaker 2: it was similar to the approach he took last year
- 17:06Speaker 2: following the shocking Ralphiele Devors trade. He went on that
- 17:10Speaker 2: next West Coast roach trip, and the point of being
- 17:12Speaker 2: there is not to give his whole spiel to the group,
- 17:16Speaker 2: but he just wanted to be be available in case
- 17:19Speaker 2: any individual player ors group of players wants to talk
- 17:23Speaker 2: to him, and some guys took him up on that.
- 17:26Speaker 2: Garrett Crochet, for example, went in on Sunday to talk
- 17:30Speaker 2: to the boss and ask us questions and gain a
- 17:33Speaker 2: greater understanding, and Crochet seemed not okay with it, but
- 17:37Speaker 2: at least understood where Breslo was coming from. Trevor story
- 17:41Speaker 2: famously not happy, infamously not happy with it. Likewise, went
- 17:46Speaker 2: and had those conversations with Breslow, which he felt was needed,
- 17:49Speaker 2: and seemed less happy than Crochet, or less accepting at
- 17:55Speaker 2: least in you know, this was last week in Toronto,
- 17:57Speaker 2: a couple of days after the fact, so guys took
- 18:01Speaker 2: the Brezil up on that they were able to say
- 18:04Speaker 2: their piece eventually to the front office. It didn't go
- 18:09Speaker 2: over well in the clubhouse, certainly, at least not initially,
- 18:13Speaker 2: but there's everybody realized. I think that there's little they
- 18:17Speaker 2: can do other than keep playing, and so far that
- 18:21Speaker 2: hasn't gone great for them.
- 18:23Speaker 1: No, not pretty. This weekend against Yeah, an Astrois team
- 18:26Speaker 1: that struggling. They made Brian and brak you look really
- 18:28Speaker 1: good who used to be good?
- 18:30Speaker 2: It was just two bad teams playing against each other
