- 0:00Speaker 1: He's good friend. Chuck Barrett, play by play voice at
- 0:02Speaker 1: the Arkansas Razorbacks, joins us, So, how old would you
- 0:06Speaker 1: have been back then? You you you had to be
- 0:08Speaker 1: a little guy, a little tyke back then.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Right. What was the year? What was the year? I
- 0:14Speaker 2: remember the song?
- 0:15Speaker 1: Yeah, nineteen seventy seven.
- 0:18Speaker 2: I was a freshman in high school.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Oh okay, all right, so you were a couple of
- 0:21Speaker 1: years behind me. Okay, I got you.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Yeah, I was, you know, I when the song was playing,
- 0:26Speaker 2: I couldn't remember was the ten CC or the Atlanta
- 0:29Speaker 2: rhythm section? You said, because wrong?
- 0:33Speaker 1: Well they you know, they they had their hits in
- 0:36Speaker 1: nineteen seventy seven to one. That kind of sounds like
- 0:39Speaker 1: that is I'm not going to let it bother me tonight.
- 0:41Speaker 1: That's nineteen seventy six.
- 0:42Speaker 2: That's right, That's exactly what it was. And you know,
- 0:47Speaker 2: those of us who cut our teeth on music radio,
- 0:50Speaker 2: we we know all the songs from that era. Yeah.
- 0:53Speaker 1: Yeah, it kind of timestamps this, doesn't it?
- 0:57Speaker 2: It really does. Right.
- 0:59Speaker 1: It's great visit with you, and I'm curious to get
- 1:05Speaker 1: your thoughts on what has been described to me by
- 1:08Speaker 1: some as a curious or a curiosity this Arkansas razorback team,
- 1:14Speaker 1: and maybe teams that are five and four maybe have
- 1:17Speaker 1: more tendency to be described in such terms. But I
- 1:21Speaker 1: look at a team that averages nearly five hundred yards
- 1:23Speaker 1: per game into the offense, that has some defensive playmakers
- 1:27Speaker 1: as well, that has an absolute, flat out big time
- 1:32Speaker 1: signature win over Tennessee and number four at the time,
- 1:36Speaker 1: So I guess maybe a curiosity is the best.
- 1:38Speaker 2: Way to describe.
- 1:39Speaker 1: How would you describe this particular group of Sam Pippins.
- 1:43Speaker 2: Well, I hate to go to a cliche, but I mean,
- 1:48Speaker 2: it really has been a roller coaster ride this year.
- 1:50Speaker 2: There have been some really high highs and some really
- 1:53Speaker 2: low loads and it's just kind of been that way.
- 1:57Speaker 2: And you know, the win over Tennessee that you talked
- 1:59Speaker 2: about was, I mean, it was huge. It was, you know,
- 2:03Speaker 2: arguably the signature win of the Sam Pitman era. But
- 2:07Speaker 2: it was followed up by a buck dud against LSU,
- 2:10Speaker 2: and they didn't play well against Gold Miss and so
- 2:14Speaker 2: it's been up and down. They've been susceptible to the
- 2:17Speaker 2: big play some on deep edge, particularly in the passing game,
- 2:21Speaker 2: and that's been a real point of emphasis during the
- 2:24Speaker 2: open week for obvious reasons. You know what's what's coming
- 2:28Speaker 2: up on on Saturday. Offensively, they've turned the ball over
- 2:33Speaker 2: and they've not been particularly good in the red zone.
- 2:36Speaker 2: They've moved the ball up and down the field, They've
- 2:38Speaker 2: missed some field goals. They've just done some things that
- 2:43Speaker 2: keep you from winning games, even though you look at
- 2:45Speaker 2: the statuet what it's over and say it shouldn't have
- 2:48Speaker 2: been like this. So yeah, curiosity is a good word.
- 2:52Speaker 2: I mean, it's sometimes you don't know what you're gonna get.
- 2:56Speaker 2: But when they've been good, they've been you know, they've
- 2:58Speaker 2: been as competitive as an anybody else in the league.
- 3:01Speaker 2: And when they've been bad, they've gotten blown out.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Well, there's two guys who want to ask about on
- 3:05Speaker 1: the offensive side. The first one is Jaquindin Jackson. Now,
- 3:09Speaker 1: I did I think two of the state championship games
- 3:12Speaker 1: he played in when he was at Duncanville, and then
- 3:15Speaker 1: of course he came down here first initially and then
- 3:18Speaker 1: you know, and had to recover from knee injury and
- 3:20Speaker 1: then ended up one of Utah and then transferring in.
- 3:22Speaker 1: But here he is rushing for nearly six hundred yards
- 3:25Speaker 1: this year and averaging nearly six yards per carry. How
- 3:28Speaker 1: would you describe what you've seen from Jaquindin Jackson this season.
- 3:33Speaker 2: When he's been healthy, he's been really really good. H
- 3:36Speaker 2: he's not been healthy of blade. I do think he's
- 3:38Speaker 2: going to play Saturday, it sounds like, and so you know,
- 3:42Speaker 2: it's amazing how these guys heel up when you know
- 3:45Speaker 2: they've got a game against their home state. So I
- 3:49Speaker 2: think he'll be ready to go. He really was a
- 3:52Speaker 2: big part of what Arkansas was able to do well
- 3:56Speaker 2: offensively when he was healthy. First off, he's a big kid.
- 4:01Speaker 2: I mean he's you know, six two and two thirty
- 4:03Speaker 2: and runs like a truck. And as you guys know,
- 4:08Speaker 2: I mean, he was a quarterback, so he sees things
- 4:12Speaker 2: perhaps that others don't see, or he sees things to
- 4:15Speaker 2: quarterback size and they're going to have to run the ball.
- 4:19Speaker 2: Arkansas is going to have to run the ball Saturday
- 4:21Speaker 2: to have a chance. And they know that. And when
- 4:24Speaker 2: they've done that, he's been the guy. And when he's
- 4:27Speaker 2: not been in there, they struggle to run the ball.
- 4:30Speaker 2: Their quarterback a lot of times has been the best
- 4:33Speaker 2: rusher when ja Quindon's not played. But He's a really
- 4:37Speaker 2: good player, and I hope down the stretch that you
- 4:40Speaker 2: know he can he can play without any further injury.
- 4:43Speaker 1: Yeah, no doubt about it. Another guy I want to
- 4:45Speaker 1: ask you about is also from the Dallas Fort Worth metroplex,
- 4:49Speaker 1: and that's Andrew Armstrong. Here's a guy from Bishop Dunn,
- 4:53Speaker 1: from a small private program, started off at the D
- 4:56Speaker 1: two level at Texas A and M commerce. They're up
- 4:58Speaker 1: to FCS now and he he's posted just some lights
- 5:02Speaker 1: out numbers this season. Ranks first in the SEC and
- 5:07Speaker 1: six nationally and receiving yards per game over one hundred
- 5:10Speaker 1: yards one hundred and seven per game first in the SEC,
- 5:14Speaker 1: and receptions per game second in receiving yards. He's a
- 5:18Speaker 1: guy that's it's been kind of a big play guy
- 5:20Speaker 1: for you in the passing game any he.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Really has been. And you know, college sports is supposed
- 5:27Speaker 2: to be about helping kids grow up. And I don't
- 5:31Speaker 2: know what happened with Andrew before, but I know since
- 5:34Speaker 2: he's been here, this guy is a guy that every
- 5:38Speaker 2: time you see him, he's happy. I mean, he's happy
- 5:41Speaker 2: to be here. I'm sure playing at the D two
- 5:44Speaker 2: level probably makes you appreciate playing at the high D
- 5:47Speaker 2: one level. But he has been just a breadth of
- 5:53Speaker 2: fresh air. And you know, he's a good teammate, you know,
- 5:57Speaker 2: like I say, I don't know what happened before, but
- 6:00Speaker 2: since he's been here, he's been a good player. He's
- 6:03Speaker 2: been a good leader, and he's been you know, sometimes
- 6:08Speaker 2: a big play guy's not also the safety valve guy.
- 6:11Speaker 2: But I mean when things get messy back there, he's
- 6:15Speaker 2: the one that Taylor Green looks for. And so he's
- 6:19Speaker 2: been really good and he's been a good player and
- 6:21Speaker 2: a big play guy, and I wish he's been here
- 6:25Speaker 2: for a longer time, honestly.
- 6:27Speaker 1: Yeah, Taylor Green was where I was going next. And
- 6:30Speaker 1: here's another guy. This is the third consecutive offensive player
- 6:34Speaker 1: I mentioned that started at a different college, a different
- 6:37Speaker 1: football program. But you know, we all know what a
- 6:40Speaker 1: different world this is now with a portal and everything
- 6:43Speaker 1: like that. And Taylor Green, I've heard him described a
- 6:47Speaker 1: variety of ways, but the most common description I hear
- 6:50Speaker 1: of him is he's big and tough. And you don't
- 6:53Speaker 1: often hear that those particular two words ascribed to a quarterback,
- 6:58Speaker 1: big and tough. You might hear big, but big and
- 7:01Speaker 1: tough and uh, I you know, just looking at him
- 7:05Speaker 1: on video, he looks all of sixty six and two
- 7:07Speaker 1: thirty if not more than that.
- 7:10Speaker 2: Yeah, he's uh, he's run over a person or two.
- 7:15Speaker 2: He's not quite what kJ Jefferson was, for example, early
- 7:19Speaker 2: in his career. Yeah, but he can truck you. And
- 7:25Speaker 2: he enjoys running the ball. And honestly that's good because
- 7:29Speaker 2: there have been times when he's been running for his
- 7:31Speaker 2: life this year. And when he has given time, he's
- 7:35Speaker 2: like any quarterback, you're giving time to throw, giving time
- 7:38Speaker 2: to go through his progressions. He's been really good like
- 7:42Speaker 2: any other quarterback. I mean, you know, pressure leads to interceptions,
- 7:46Speaker 2: and pressure leads to sometimes bad reads quick reads, and
- 7:52Speaker 2: he's been susceptible to that. And you go through his
- 7:54Speaker 2: career back to Boysey State, it's it's it's very similar.
- 8:01Speaker 2: You know. Bobby Petrino is very good with quarterbacks, and
- 8:05Speaker 2: Green has gotten a lot better this year. You know.
- 8:08Speaker 2: My hope, just very frankly when the season began, was
- 8:11Speaker 2: they could win enough games where everything would stay in
- 8:13Speaker 2: place for another year, when Patrino and Green would have
- 8:17Speaker 2: a second season together. Because I've seen coach Patrino work
- 8:23Speaker 2: with quarterbacks. I've seen what he can do, and he's
- 8:25Speaker 2: excellent at it. But nobody's great inside of four or
- 8:29Speaker 2: five six month period. You gotta more time than that.
- 8:33Speaker 2: So Taylan has looked really good. When he's again been
- 8:37Speaker 2: protected and when he's running for his life, sometimes some
- 8:42Speaker 2: bad things happen.
- 8:43Speaker 1: Visit Chuck Barrett, played by play voice of the Arkansas
- 8:46Speaker 1: Razorbacks here on sports Radio in thirteen hundred and so, Chuck,
- 8:49Speaker 1: you brought up kJ Jefferson Longhorn fans didn't think about
- 8:53Speaker 1: think back to that game three years ago when Tech,
- 8:56Speaker 1: the last time these two teams met on the football
- 8:58Speaker 1: field of Texas went in there and got absolutely molly wotted,
- 9:03Speaker 1: or as Sark said on the SEC conference call, because
- 9:07Speaker 1: he was asked about getting the short end of the stick,
- 9:10Speaker 1: and his actual quote and I quote was I don't
- 9:13Speaker 1: know about short end of the stick. We got our
- 9:15Speaker 1: ass whipped. That's the way he described it.
- 9:17Speaker 2: Uh.
- 9:18Speaker 1: The other thing that that I think is is pretty
- 9:21Speaker 1: interesting is, uh, there's been a lot of talk even
- 9:24Speaker 1: as I've been on you know, a couple of podcasts
- 9:29Speaker 1: and broadcasts, including the one with your broadcast partner Queen Grovy,
- 9:31Speaker 1: this week, and uh, there's been a lot of talk
- 9:35Speaker 1: about the rivalry and what and what rivalry there is,
- 9:39Speaker 1: and now it's starting to regenerate. And obviously it's going
- 9:42Speaker 1: to get white hot in a couple of weeks when
- 9:43Speaker 1: Texas goes to College Station. But but is the vibe
- 9:47Speaker 1: that you're getting up there that folks really eager about this,
- 9:52Speaker 1: about the resumption of a rivalry with Texas.
- 9:58Speaker 2: So much of that is generateational For my generation, the
- 10:04Speaker 2: third Saturday in October man Arkansas and Texas. You know,
- 10:08Speaker 2: we were raised on that and that's when the game
- 10:12Speaker 2: was played and it was just part of every fall.
- 10:16Speaker 2: So for us, yes, it is, Uh, it's fun, it's nostalgic,
- 10:21Speaker 2: which we all love. There's a generation for whom Arkansas
- 10:26Speaker 2: and Texas doesn't mean that much because they have not
- 10:30Speaker 2: been raised on it. I mean, Arkansas has been in
- 10:32Speaker 2: the SEC for over thirty years now, and so unless
- 10:36Speaker 2: you're of a certain age, you don't remember a lot
- 10:38Speaker 2: of those games. And frankly, if you're going to go
- 10:42Speaker 2: back to Darrol Royal and Frank Broyles, there aren't you know,
- 10:45Speaker 2: there aren't many of their contemporaries left, so you know, rivalries.
- 10:51Speaker 2: Things have to happen, things have to be on the line,
- 10:54Speaker 2: there have to be big games. Uh, there's there's there's
- 10:57Speaker 2: you know, there's got to be a bad call somewhere
- 10:59Speaker 2: down to the lawe. Those are the things that build rivalries.
- 11:04Speaker 2: I hope that things happen in games that build that
- 11:08Speaker 2: rivalry or rebuild that rivalry. But I do think for
- 11:13Speaker 2: a certain generation of our Kansons, it's a really really
- 11:17Speaker 2: big game. You know. You got to remember too, We've
- 11:21Speaker 2: got a lot of students from the Dallas Fort Worth area.
- 11:25Speaker 2: Texas is different than Arkansas and that so many schools
- 11:28Speaker 2: play one another. You grow up fans of different teams.
- 11:32Speaker 2: Texas has a lot of rival some of them are
- 11:34Speaker 2: in state, and so some of their children come up
- 11:37Speaker 2: here and you know they they may not have been
- 11:41Speaker 2: Texas fans before, so you know they buy into it.
- 11:45Speaker 2: But for a generation of our Kansas though, it's it's
- 11:49Speaker 2: it's stories their dads tell.
- 11:51Speaker 1: Yeah, I hear you. Now, I'd be remiss if I
- 11:54Speaker 1: didn't ask you for an early early review on what
- 11:59Speaker 1: you're seeing with the Razorback basketball program with with John
- 12:03Speaker 1: Calipari and what he's done there and what Col's influence
- 12:07Speaker 1: there in the in the community, and and the excitement
- 12:10Speaker 1: that's generated around Razorback basketball.
- 12:14Speaker 2: You know, Craig has been interesting. I think our fans
- 12:17Speaker 2: are just now coming to the realization that John Calipari
- 12:21Speaker 2: is the Razorbacks basketball. You know, people have just been
- 12:25Speaker 2: kind of in shock. And I know he was introduced
- 12:29Speaker 2: and I know that you know, he's the Razorbacks coach,
- 12:32Speaker 2: but I think until people saw him out there, but
- 12:37Speaker 2: there is an excitement level. And now, look, it's still
- 12:40Speaker 2: football season for a lot of people, but the Arkansas
- 12:45Speaker 2: has got a level of talent that not even Nolan
- 12:50Speaker 2: Richardson had in here, and just through you know there
- 12:54Speaker 2: he got a signature today from you know, the number
- 12:57Speaker 2: one shooting guard in the country, and so there is
- 13:00Speaker 2: a level of excitement that has not been there previously. Now, look,
- 13:04Speaker 2: our fans were excited under Moss. I mean, we did
- 13:08Speaker 2: well under Moss, and but yeah, cow, it's a whole
- 13:11Speaker 2: different deal. It's you know, you realize that there are
- 13:16Speaker 2: a handful of folks out there that just do things
- 13:18Speaker 2: differently than everybody else, and he falls into that group
- 13:22Speaker 2: for sure. Yeah.
- 13:23Speaker 1: Absolutely, Hey, Chuck, I really appreciate you taking the time
- 13:26Speaker 1: to just look forward to getting back up there and
- 13:29Speaker 1: the experiencing the excitement of this this game. Look forward
- 13:32Speaker 1: to seeing you as always and it's always a pleasure
- 13:34Speaker 1: to visit with you. Thanks so much for taking the time.
- 13:37Speaker 1: I'm honored to be on with you. You're one of the best.
- 13:39Speaker 1: Thank you, Thanks Chuck, I'll see you on Saturday.
- 13:42Speaker 2: Okay, say travels.
- 13:44Speaker 1: Thank you. That is Chuck Bher play by play voice
- 13:47Speaker 1: of the Arkansas Razorbacks. One of the great guys to
- 13:49Speaker 1: visit with as well. And yeah, there's excitement building for
- 13:54Speaker 1: for the Hogs on the on the hardwood as well
- 13:57Speaker 1: as what Arkansas can do in football as well. And
- 14:02Speaker 1: they're they're five and four. If they win their Bowl
- 14:05Speaker 1: elves well they definitely even if you even if you
- 14:08Speaker 1: separated and nobody will, but even if you separated the
- 14:18Speaker 1: rivalry part of it, if you just pulled that out
- 14:21Speaker 1: of it, you would you would still have stuff at
- 14:26Speaker 1: stake for Arkansas chance to to become Bowl eligible and
- 14:31Speaker 1: to get to four and three in the SEC. Sam
- 14:35Speaker 1: Pittman has done a good enough job in keeping their
- 14:38Speaker 1: head above water and SEC play. And that's not an
- 14:40Speaker 1: easy thing to say, and to do. So there's that,
- 14:44Speaker 1: then there's the rivalry thing. And this is the week
- 14:48Speaker 1: where I have seen and heard so much about the
- 14:56Speaker 1: history of this rivalry. This, by the way, is going
- 15:00Speaker 1: to be on December sixth, the day before the SEC Championship,
- 15:03Speaker 1: no less, the fifty fifth anniversary of the big shootout
- 15:07Speaker 1: game in nineteen sixty nine in Fayetteville when it was
- 15:11Speaker 1: then just Razorback Stadium and ceed I think forty two
- 15:13Speaker 1: thousand on the cold, gray, gloomy, drippy day when he
- 15:19Speaker 1: had number one Texas and number two Arkansas playing and
- 15:23Speaker 1: President Nixon in the stands and a young staff member
- 15:27Speaker 1: named George H. W. Bush. He was there with him
- 15:30Speaker 1: as well. And I mentioned this the other day, Bill
- 15:35Speaker 1: and Hillary Clinton as student protesters, part of the student
- 15:39Speaker 1: protests that were going on beyond the south end zone
- 15:42Speaker 1: and all that sort of stuff. And the incredible fifteen
- 15:44Speaker 1: fourteen Longhorn victory Arkansas jumps of the fourteen nothing lead
- 15:48Speaker 1: Longhorns surviving, I think it was five turnovers in the
- 15:51Speaker 1: game and the big fifty three verveer pass to Cotton
- 15:57Speaker 1: Inspire from James Street that set up what proved to
- 16:03Speaker 1: be the game winning touchdown. The genius of Darrel Royle
- 16:05Speaker 1: to go for two after the first touchdown, not the second.
- 16:08Speaker 1: So all that all that was on the line was
- 16:11Speaker 1: for Happy Feller from Fredericksburg, Texas to knock to kick
- 16:15Speaker 1: the ball through for the fifteen to fourteen victory, and
- 16:18Speaker 1: it wrapped up a national championship. Was that they met
- 16:21Speaker 1: the next year. It was another made for TV matchup
- 16:26Speaker 1: and it didn't live up to the billing. Next year
- 16:28Speaker 1: in Austin, Texas blew blew out the Razorbacks forty two
- 16:31Speaker 1: to seven to make it back to back national titles.
- 16:33Speaker 1: That was the Coaches National Championship and then with that
- 16:36Speaker 1: rash of injuries and Joe Thizmen playing really really well
- 16:39Speaker 1: for Notre Dame, Notre Dame beat Texas and the Cotton
- 16:41Speaker 1: Bowl and enabled Nebraska to claim the national title that
- 16:45Speaker 1: year in Texas had the Coaches National Championship split national titles.
- 16:50Speaker 3: That game was originally scheduled for October. The nineteen seventy
- 16:53Speaker 3: matchup in ABC was like, let's move it to December.
- 16:56Speaker 1: It started. Isn't that crazy? That happened in sixty nine?
- 16:59Speaker 1: How first beIN o'cook, who became an ESPN analyst and prognosticator.
- 17:05Speaker 1: Later he was a young TV executive with ABC. He
- 17:08Speaker 1: talked run Arledge in the ABC brass in to asking
- 17:14Speaker 1: the two schools to move that game to December sixth,
- 17:16Speaker 1: and they did in sixty nine, and it was such
- 17:19Speaker 1: a gold mine of a game fifteen fourteen and all
- 17:22Speaker 1: that stuff that they said, let's run it back. Do
- 17:24Speaker 1: it again the next year. They did in seventy. It
- 17:27Speaker 1: just didn't live up the Billain because the long Worns
- 17:29Speaker 1: dominated him that one. But there were other big games
- 17:33Speaker 1: at Arkansas. Nineteen sixty four. This is the sixtieth anniversary
- 17:38Speaker 1: of this season. Nineteen sixty four, the Loggers were the
- 17:41Speaker 1: defending national champions. They won it their first national title
- 17:45Speaker 1: in sixty three and in the sixty four season, number
- 17:48Speaker 1: ones in the country and they play Arkansas. They missed
- 17:51Speaker 1: an extra point and the difference in the game. Ken
- 17:55Speaker 1: Hatfield returned upont eighty one yards for a touchdown. The
- 17:58Speaker 1: same Ken Hatfield who would lay coached the Razorbacks and
- 18:01Speaker 1: was also a coach at Rice. And he tells the
- 18:05Speaker 1: story about how Daryl Royal came into the Arkansas locker
- 18:08Speaker 1: room after the game and said, you guys beat a
- 18:10Speaker 1: really good football team today. So make sure you stick
- 18:13Speaker 1: to your knitting, was the way he said, because if
- 18:16Speaker 1: you drop a piece or two, our guys will be
- 18:19Speaker 1: there to pick it up. And he was exactly right.
- 18:21Speaker 1: Texas did not lose another game the rest of the year.
- 18:25Speaker 1: Neither did Arkansas. The AP and the UPI crowned Alabama
- 18:30Speaker 1: quarterback by Joe Namath as the national champion. Alabama played
- 18:34Speaker 1: Texas and the Orange Ball the first Bowl game at night.
- 18:37Speaker 1: Texas big goal line stand Tommy Nobus stopping Joe Namath
- 18:40Speaker 1: at the goal line, and Logorns won that game twenty
- 18:45Speaker 1: three to seventeen. I believe it was or twenty three twenty. Anyway,
- 18:48Speaker 1: Texas won that football game, and Arkansas went on and
- 18:52Speaker 1: won and beat Nebraska and the cop Bowl and won
- 18:55Speaker 1: what was then the third major thing. The Football Writers
- 18:58Speaker 1: Association of America voted them the national champions. That's Arkansas's
