Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:03culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:06media, the creator economy, and the digital space every Monday
- 0:10through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:13the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:17Welcome back to Mini Scroll, everyone.
- 0:20I hope you guys had a good weekend.
- 0:22I had a pretty good weekend. I had a little Canada Day party
- 0:25like I didn't have it, but I went to one and it was a double
- 0:28denim theme. But anyways, so I had a really
- 0:31good weekend. I got some downtime which was
- 0:33nice and now I am back. Oh, and I also, I let you guys
- 0:37know this on infinite scroll, but I got a teleprompter which
- 0:41is so exciting and I thought I was only going to use it for
- 0:44infinite scroll, but I just uploaded my mini scroll notes to
- 0:48the teleprompter. So we'll see.
- 0:49This will be my first Test. I kind of like having the notes
- 0:52like down here for mini scroll, but we'll see.
- 0:55I don't know. Anyways, I think it'll be good.
- 0:57All right, let's just get straight into the stories,
- 0:58'cause I have some big stories. The first one is that Alyssa
- 1:02Violet has called out Tana Mojo in defense of Jason Nash.
- 1:07So influencer Alyssa Violet has had enough of Tana Mojo's jabs
- 1:11at Jason Nash. Over the weekend, Alyssa made
- 1:14several videos calling out Tana for constantly making fun of
- 1:17Jason doing live streams for money.
- 1:20As we know, Jason has copped a lot of criticism in recent
- 1:23months for like, begging for money on TikTok.
- 1:26He goes on TikTok live essentially.
- 1:27And yeah, basically like begs for different gifts and things
- 1:30that you can like, gift people on TikTok.
- 1:33I don't quite understand. I like, have really never
- 1:35explored the TikTok live element of things.
- 1:38But I guess you can like, ask for like, virtual gifts and
- 1:42things and that converts to money.
- 1:44Anyways, Tana, who as we know is friends with Jason's ex Trisha
- 1:48Paytas, has been part of that criticism, making videos here
- 1:52and there joking about, you know, no matter how bad things
- 1:55get in our lives, we should all be thankful that we are not
- 1:59Jason Nash. Tana made another one of these
- 2:01videos this weekend and then Alyssa stitched it calling out
- 2:05Tana for making fun of Jason. She called him like a
- 2:08middle-aged man who has children to pay for and it's just trying
- 2:11to make a buck and like it's just low hanging fruit for Tana
- 2:14to go after him. At least I'm not Jason Nash.
- 2:19OK, I've had enough. I was going to say something a
- 2:22couple of times ago when Tana started stuff with Tessa and
- 2:28then she always talks about Jason Nash and then she talked
- 2:30about this other girl and I posted my Snapchat about it
- 2:32because TikTok wouldn't let me post a video for some reason.
- 2:35But regardless, Tana, I listen. I know your job and I know that
- 2:40like you're supposed to be like talking about drama all the time
- 2:42and that's literally your job on your podcast.
- 2:44But for coming to to come for somebody that's literally just
- 2:48trying to make a simple living on like just going live on
- 2:53TikTok, TikTok trying to make ends meet.
- 2:56Like he's a middle-aged man, like he has kids, he has to make
- 2:59money for his kids school. Like all this stuff.
- 3:01Not everybody can post a butthole picture on on only fans
- 3:09like and make $1,000,000. OK, That's like unheard of.
- 3:12And and that's great that you do that.
- 3:13That's awesome. Cool.
- 3:14Like I'm not shaming you for that.
- 3:16That's great. It's just not everyone can do
- 3:17that. So what we're not going to do,
- 3:19it's not cool in 2024, is shaming people for going live,
- 3:23for making a couple of extra dollars.
- 3:25Alyssa got a lot of heat for this video, mostly for coming to
- 3:29Jason Nashes defense. You know, a lot of people feel
- 3:32like he's not a great guy because he was so heavily
- 3:35associated with David Dobrik. Didn't really, you know, I
- 3:38guess, move away from him after the scandal in the Vlog Squad.
- 3:42And just like a lot has come out about the Vlog Squad and about
- 3:45his relationship with Trisha and things like that since all of
- 3:48that exploded in 2020. One, I believe it was when that
- 3:53big expose happened. So anyways, people are kind of
- 3:56like Jason is like not the hill to be dying on for this.
- 3:59And then of course, she also got heat for kind of making fun of
- 4:03Tana for doing only fans or like shaming her for doing only fans.
- 4:07So Alyssa made a follow up video like doubling down on her point
- 4:11and then she ended up deleting all of her TikTok content about
- 4:14it. So she removed those videos like
- 4:16I said and then she posted two slides like text photos I guess
- 4:20with text to TikTok. The first one said I'm removing
- 4:23myself from all this go on my Snapchat to see my original
- 4:27point or don't I don't care. This is something I most
- 4:30definitely will not put my my time and energy into anymore.
- 4:34I took down all the videos Internet.
- 4:36You can happily have this one. And then the next slide said, to
- 4:39be clear, I don't support abuse, bullying, pedophilia, shaming of
- 4:42any kind. I also don't support cyber
- 4:45bullying of any kind. And that was my original point.
- 4:48So that's that. I mean, I, I think, yeah, the
- 4:52Jason Nash Hill is maybe not the hill to die on.
- 4:56I just think right now we're in this really interesting time
- 4:59with Tana where she's had such a renaissance and it's it's
- 5:02actually similar to Tricia's. Like she's such a fan favorite
- 5:06now because she's really just like owned her shit.
- 5:08She has seemed to change a lot and I think Brooke her like
- 5:11making up with Brooke and doing canceled, but Brooke has helped
- 5:14this renaissance and like helped to this rebrand for her.
- 5:17I know a lot of people do say things like canceled is just
- 5:20like Mean Girls that talk shit and stuff like that.
- 5:23But I mean, maybe, but I don't know, you guys know how I feel
- 5:27about like tea and gossip and talking shit like I could do it
- 5:30all day long. I love it.
- 5:32I think it was just like the hypocrisy for people like Alyssa
- 5:34coming for her for saying, you know, she does only fans for
- 5:39money. And like she talks on her
- 5:41podcast about other people, gossips about other people for
- 5:43money. Well, that's kind of like what
- 5:44Tana's making fun of Jason for. Like she's saying like you
- 5:48should just like let him get his bag and like leave him alone.
- 5:51And then you're coming for Tana on how she's getting her bag.
- 5:54That was kind of the whole point.
- 5:55So that all blew up in the span of like 12 hours.
- 5:57And at the time that I'm recording this, which actually
- 5:59is Sunday, not Monday. So possibly I will miss
- 6:03something, but Tana has not responded to Alyssa as far as
- 6:06I've seen. All right, the next story that I
- 6:08have for you guys is that Jaclyn Hill has talked about what it
- 6:11feels like to be canceled on the full coverage podcast.
- 6:15OK, I made a TikTok about this podcast episode on my personal
- 6:19TikTok account because I am obsessed with it.
- 6:23I listened to it. I listened to it on Saturday
- 6:26when I was like going to the gym and then getting ready.
- 6:29It's like a 2 hour podcast. Oh my God, it is so good.
- 6:32It reminded me why these people are famous.
- 6:34It was so entertaining. They literally just did not stop
- 6:38talking for the full 2 hours. There was no lull.
- 6:40There was not a second that I was bored.
- 6:42It was so good. I was like yeah This is why
- 6:44these people are famous. They have such larger than life
- 6:47personalities and having them all together like this, like
- 6:49these O GS together, I was like, Oh yeah, I remember this now.
- 6:53But they talked about a lot of really meaningful and big
- 6:57topics. I felt I you guys can actually
- 7:00go watch my TikTok if you want, because I'm not going to dive
- 7:02into like everything here. I talked a little bit more about
- 7:04it there, but like they talked about having children and the
- 7:07way that they spoke about it was so chill that it just like made
- 7:11me feel so calm and like seen about the whole topic.
- 7:15It was very, very good. But the point that I wanted to
- 7:17make here was they talked about obviously being canceled.
- 7:20And I thought that this was really interesting because
- 7:23obviously all three of them, Jacqueline, Manny, MUA, Laura
- 7:26Lee have all been canceled at different times for different
- 7:28things. Typically when we hear creators
- 7:31talk about cancel culture or being canceled and what that
- 7:34feels like, it's either in the moment when they're still fresh
- 7:38with it and it's like very emotional and stressful and it's
- 7:42like damage control or it's, you know, them being like angry and
- 7:47like putting that back on us for cancelling them and being like
- 7:51unrealistic or whatever. And this conversation, there was
- 7:54like a little bit of that. I would say there was like a
- 7:55tiny little bit of like, you know, resentment there.
- 7:59But like, I, I also think that's normal.
- 8:01I think we can't really fault creators who get cancelled for
- 8:05being resentful of that cancellation.
- 8:07I understand that's like not the point of a cancellation.
- 8:10It's kind of like you need to take accountability and like if
- 8:12you take accountability properly, then like in theory
- 8:15you wouldn't feel resentful of that situation.
- 8:19But like it's just human nature, you know.
- 8:21So there was a little bit of that.
- 8:23There was like a little streak of resentment in that in their
- 8:25conversation. But I would say for the most
- 8:27part, it was very objective. And they talked about some
- 8:30really interesting things about being cancelled.
- 8:33So the best points that I took away from that was they talked
- 8:35about how being cancelled makes you question your own self
- 8:40perception. Like it makes you really feel
- 8:42like, oh, I am that person that everyone is saying that I am.
- 8:46And that makes you question like your own values, who you
- 8:49actually are. And I think that's kind of the
- 8:52point of what usually audiences say they want from a
- 8:55cancellation. So I think if that is like what
- 8:59you want from creators when they have a cancellation, it's to
- 9:01like to have some self reflection.
- 9:04Apparently it's working. OK.
- 9:06So that was the first thing. The second thing that they said
- 9:09was that like you can't actually learn anything in the moment
- 9:13while you're being cancelled. And they didn't say this part of
- 9:16it, but I interpreted that as them saying like the demands
- 9:20from fans to take accountability and to do accountability,
- 9:25whatever that means in the exact correct way in the moment.
- 9:27Like that's not actually impactful because what they're
- 9:30doing in the moment is trying to survive.
- 9:33Like they're in constant fight or flight.
- 9:35Say what you want about creators getting canceled, celebrities
- 9:37getting canceled, I understand it's a very like sensitive topic
- 9:41for audiences and for influencers and public figures
- 9:45in general. I would say at the end of the
- 9:46day, somebody getting cancelled, it's like the biggest pylon in
- 9:50the world, especially if you think about like Jacqueline's
- 9:52hairy lipsticks. Mandy got cancelled for like
- 9:55being a bad friend. I don't even know if that is
- 9:59anywhere close to a cancelable quote UN quote offense.
- 10:03Obviously Laura got cancelled for some much bigger and more
- 10:06horrific things. But you know, I think the pylon
- 10:09of like everybody coming at you, the whole Internet, especially
- 10:13now, it's it's so inflamed now when they all got started
- 10:15getting cancelled, you know, this is like a little bit right
- 10:17before cancel culture really like took off.
- 10:20It would be the most horrific experience I can only imagine.
- 10:23So I don't think it's an exaggeration to say you are like
- 10:27trying to survive minute to minute, like you are in constant
- 10:29fight or flight. So, you know, you actually can't
- 10:32take proper accountability and you can't do the things that
- 10:35like the your audience is demanding of you in that exact
- 10:38moment because the pylon is too much like anybody would just
- 10:42shut down. Like your mental, your mental
- 10:44state would be so bad. There would be no way for you to
- 10:48actually properly look at the situation from like any type of
- 10:51like helpful or like objective lens.
- 10:53So, you know, they did say like the learning comes like after
- 10:56that. And then Jacqueline said through
- 10:58therapy, she's really found who she is and what grounds her,
- 11:03which has helped her navigate the Internet hate, which kind of
- 11:06ties back into their first point, which is, you know, when
- 11:10something bad like this happens, like when a scandal happens, you
- 11:12really self reflect on like, Oh my God, am I this person?
- 11:16I didn't think I was this person.
- 11:17Everybody's in the world is saying that I'm this person.
- 11:19Am I this person? So I thought that was
- 11:22interesting where she said, you know, you really have to have
- 11:24like a strong sense of self. And actually we talked about
- 11:26that recently. Who are we talking about that
- 11:29with with? Not with about, I don't know.
- 11:31We're talking about a celebrity having a strong sense of self.
- 11:34But I think that's probably the biggest way that a creator or a
- 11:38celebrity can, like, handle a cancellation is if you have a
- 11:41strong sense of self and thick skin.
- 11:43And that comes with having a strong sense of self, right?
- 11:45It's like if you know who you are, then you know that like
- 11:49what people are saying about you is actually not true.
- 11:53And Jacqueline said that she's like, I'm not going to get
- 11:55cancelled for something that's like super fucked up because I'm
- 11:57not like a fucked up person, you know, like what I'm getting
- 12:00cancelled for. What most creators get cancelled
- 12:02for is for mistakes, which everybody makes and those
- 12:06mistakes are amplified. Take that how you will.
- 12:08I know some of the cancellations, quote UN quote,
- 12:11that we have seen over the years have felt like much bigger than
- 12:14mistakes, that's for sure. But I do agree that a lot of
- 12:19them could be chalked up to just mistakes.
- 12:21OK and the last story that I have for you guys, I need to
- 12:24break down the Olivia Culpo wedding dress saga for you.
- 12:28It's been on and off my TikTok timeline for like 2 weeks now.
- 12:33I have question or a week sorry. I think she only got married
- 12:35last weekend. But I don't know if I want to
- 12:36talk about like my opinion on like someone's wedding in this
- 12:41way just because I feel like there's already clearly they're
- 12:44already very hurt and sensitive to the discourse around their
- 12:48wedding and Olivia's look. So I don't want to like
- 12:51contribute to that. Speaking of cancel culture.
- 12:54But I'm going to give you the full rundown of what's happening
- 12:57because it is just not stopping. And that's kind of where I'll
- 13:00leave at. So Olivia Culpo, she got married
- 13:03to a football player like last week and her wedding dress is
- 13:07literally the talk of TikTok. So she was dressed by Dolce and
- 13:11Gabbana. And her first dress, the one
- 13:13that has lots of discourse about it, essentially covered her from
- 13:17head to toe. It was like long sleeves, high
- 13:20neckline all the way up and it was just complete simple white
- 13:24fabric. She had a Vogue like wedding, so
- 13:27she did an interview and she said, quote, I didn't want it to
- 13:30exude sex in any way, shape or form.
- 13:33I wanted it to feel effortless and as if it's complimenting me,
- 13:36not overpowering me. There's so much beauty and
- 13:39simplicity. So bridal creator Kennedy
- 13:41Bingham, who goes by Gown eyed Girl on TikTok, did a review of
- 13:46Olivia's look. She has a long video, I'll link
- 13:48it down below. But she basically said the dress
- 13:50has no personality. It felt opposite to what Olivia
- 13:53dresses like in real life, which was a lot of the criticism.
- 13:56It was just like, unexpected for Olivia Culpo to wear a dress
- 14:00like that. And she said that like the Vogue
- 14:02interview that Olivia did in which she spoke about the dress
- 14:05felt like a conservative campaign because Olivia talked
- 14:09about how she wanted to be covered.
- 14:11She wanted to wear something that showed how seriously she
- 14:13takes her vows and that Christian, her husband prefers
- 14:18her covered. And Kennedy was basically like,
- 14:21that is such a weird thing to constantly talk about and
- 14:25especially with the taking your vows really seriously.
- 14:28She was like, it doesn't matter what a bride wears on her
- 14:31wedding day. That has no, you know,
- 14:33correlation to like how seriously she takes her vows.
- 14:37So Kennedy said, quote, it's very clear that this was not a
- 14:39wedding. This was a conservative campaign
- 14:42and it wasn't even well done. You took this disingenuous pick
- 14:46me route that honestly felt more like you were thinking about
- 14:49your narrative than your actual marriage.
- 14:54OK. And you know, Kennedy has had a
- 14:57lot of support for that statement.
- 14:58It was a very bold and brave thing to say on the Internet.
- 15:03I mean, I don't know if brave is the right word, but it was like
- 15:04a bold thing to say about someone else's wedding.
- 15:07But I think when you consider the political climate that the
- 15:10US is in, I think it's important to be like hyper aware of the
- 15:15propaganda or like what could be a propaganda that you're
- 15:19consuming, like the content that you're consuming in general.
- 15:21So while I don't think that Olivia Culpo is necessarily
- 15:24intentionally trying to push a trad wife agenda, that is very
- 15:27much what a lot of people feel like this Vogue interview was.
- 15:32And I also think you need to consider who styled them.
- 15:37You know, Dolce and Gabbana, like they are highly
- 15:41problematic. They have anti-gay beliefs.
- 15:45They are not a designer that I would want to be associated
- 15:48with. I think a lot of people would
- 15:49want to be associated with, especially their marriage.
- 15:51So it just makes you think it's like, OK, if you're willing to
- 15:55get design, if you're willing to collaborate with a designer like
- 15:58this, what does that mean about who you are and what you're
- 16:02trying to tell the world? OK, so Olivia and Christian saw
- 16:07this. People are like making a joke
- 16:09that they saw this on their honeymoon.
- 16:12I don't know. But they saw this video and they
- 16:14commented. So Olivia wrote, wow, what an
- 16:16absolutely evil person you are. I hope no one ever tears you
- 16:20apart in this way because it's extremely hurtful.
- 16:22I love this dress. And it was everything I wanted
- 16:24and more. And then Christian wrote, what
- 16:26an evil thing to post online. I hope you find joy and peace in
- 16:29the world the way my beautiful wife does.
- 16:32This was obviously a huge moment for Olivia, a huge PR moment.
- 16:36And I understand it's a hard line to toe because it is APR
- 16:40moment for her. So you, you know, we as like the
- 16:42audience. She's wanting us to consume that
- 16:44Vogue article. She's wanting us to consume her
- 16:46Instagram content. If that's what you want from us,
- 16:50then we should be allowed to critique it.
- 16:51But then I also understand it's like, well, you're also
- 16:54monetizing and PRifying, publicizing, PRifying,
- 16:59publicizing a very important intimate moment.
- 17:02And I do agree, like it's a sacred moment for a lot of
- 17:05people and brides, they feel usually or they want to feel
- 17:08their most beautiful on their wedding day.
- 17:10So for somebody to like be talking shit about what a bride
- 17:13looks like, that just does feel really hurtful.
- 17:15So I see both sides of it. But I think that's what Kennedy
- 17:19was trying to say is like, this was so much of APR moment and
- 17:24that is what a lot of the opinion has been.
- 17:26But this has also caused a lot of discourse about celebrities
- 17:29responding to audiences. Like, yes, Kennedy is a big
- 17:33bridal creator, but she's also a regular person.
- 17:36She's a tik toker. She has no bearing on their
- 17:38life. So another creator, Cora
- 17:41Brillian, made the point that when celebrities respond, this
- 17:45really like fucks up their SEO because now when you Google
- 17:49Olivia culpa wedding dress, it's just news articles about Olivia
- 17:53and Christian calling out this Tik toker as opposed to anything
- 17:58about her actual wedding dress. And then I did see Shannon from
- 18:01fluently forward say it was kind of ironic that Olivia was like,
- 18:05I hope no one ever tears you apart in this way because it's
- 18:07extremely hurtful when she literally just called Kennedy an
- 18:12evil person. Like she's kind of doing that
- 18:14same thing. So yeah, I don't know.
- 18:16There is a lot of discourse. This just to me goes back to
- 18:21distrust and like disdain for influencers and celebrities and
- 18:28like the 1%, the elite. It just keeps snowballing.
- 18:32This is nothing new. We've seen this type of
- 18:35discourse come out of things over the last few years.
- 18:37It's been coming to the surface the last few years more than
- 18:40ever post like lockdowns, I guess.
- 18:44So to me, this is just like another example of that.
- 18:46It's like if you want us to consume and by consuming
- 18:50essentially helping pay your bills, like we should also then
- 18:53be allowed to critique it. Media and art and fashion.
- 18:58All of that is meant for critique gang.
- 19:00But I'm interested to hear how you guys feel about that.
- 19:03Please let me know in the comments.
- 19:05Thank you so much for listening to Mini scroll.
- 19:08I love you guys so much and I will talk to you guys tomorrow.
- 19:12Bye.
