- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Welcome to Everyone the Critic.
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: The show where a guest picks a movie rated below 40% on Rotten Tomatoes and tells us why critics got it wrong.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: I'm your host, Yanis Cove, a formerly pretentious film school student.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: Ten years later sees the error of his ways.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: My guest today is writer, director, and comedian Charlie Dinkin.
- 0:23SPEAKER_01: Thank you for having me.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: How are you doing today?
- 0:26SPEAKER_01: I'm okay.
- 0:27SPEAKER_01: I'm quite tired and a little bit hungover because I had one drink last night, and I guess I'm old now.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: Have you been but like what's it been like during quarantine?
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: Have you been drinking at all?
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Or because like I hadn't been drinking and then I had like a drink recently, and I was like, oh, this is hitting me so much harder than drinking.
- 0:47SPEAKER_01: I've never drink anything.
- 0:48SPEAKER_01: That's why now I can't ever drink anything again.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 0:51SPEAKER_01: I'm quite intrigued by people who were drinking a lot during this period.
- 0:55SPEAKER_01: I guess you had nowhere to be the next day, so no better time.
- 0:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 0:59SPEAKER_01: It was just a bit depressing to be like sitting at home with my boyfriend getting slammed every night.
- 1:04SPEAKER_01: So I did not do that, but um maybe I made a core decision.
- 1:08SPEAKER_01: But now when I have one drink, that's it, I'm out.
- 1:11SPEAKER_01: And I feel terrible the next day.
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: But happy to be here, thank you for having me.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: And now you're drinking a big glass of water.
- 1:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm using the um cup from a neutra bullet because I bought all these cups from my house and then they're too small for my taste, so I just use this one massive one from the neutra bullet.
- 1:28SPEAKER_01: It's not a good drinking experience.
- 1:30SPEAKER_01: Your bottle looks much more interesting.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, my bottle is like it's still very small though.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: It's like not enough to be drinking.
- 1:37SPEAKER_01: And I tend to forget to spin it up again.
- 1:39SPEAKER_01: No.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: Show?
- 1:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's a rip-off of a swell, isn't it?
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: I'm not like up on the water bottles.
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: Keeps it cold for 12 hours, keeps it hot for 12 hours.
- 1:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's exactly the ones, yeah.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: And that's uh how I get into my sponsored segment about show.
- 1:59SPEAKER_01: If only you could have a cut of the water bottle money.
- 2:02SPEAKER_01: I think they're absolutely right for women.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: So uh the movie you picked today uh is has nothing to do with water, it had, but it has a lot to do with drinking.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: It's uh coyote ugly.
- 2:17SPEAKER_01: That was a really great segue in.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: That I thought it was awful, an awful segue, but uh I saw it and had to go for it.
- 2:24SPEAKER_01: Uh yes, I'm here to lecture on the subject of uh Coyote Ugly.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: To lecture, okay.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: So you've made lots of notes.
- 2:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:33SPEAKER_01: I've treated academically.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: That would be amazing if someone actually came on and did that.
- 2:40SPEAKER_01: I'm so next time.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: Um, so what is your history with this movie?
- 2:49SPEAKER_01: So I don't remember.
- 2:51SPEAKER_01: Do you know what year did the film come out?
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: 2000.
- 2:55SPEAKER_01: So I would have been so I would have been about um at 10 or 11 in 2000.
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: So I don't know if I saw it when it came out, but I definitely watched it on I didn't watch it in the cinema, obviously.
- 3:06SPEAKER_01: I watched it on TV.
- 3:07SPEAKER_01: Do you think anyone saw this film in the cinema?
- 3:09SPEAKER_01: I imagine it was released in a cinema.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: I thought it was quite big, wasn't it?
- 3:14SPEAKER_01: It's got such a TV vibe to it for me.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: It does have a TV vibe, yeah.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: It's a very it's a very much a TV movie.
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: And this film for me is like a really classic um the age when you're too young to be doing anything on like a Friday or Saturday night, you're like 14 or 15, but your parents have gone to bed at 10:30, so it's like I'm gonna watch Coyote Ugly.
- 3:34SPEAKER_01: American Pie or Coyote Ugly.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: That's a perfect like summation of this movie, I think.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: That's exactly how I think of it as well.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: Although I I don't think I'd seen it since I so I remember nothing about it.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: I saw it when it I guess like I was around the same age, like 14 maybe, and don't remember any of it until like the rewatch yesterday.
- 3:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I sort of I mean I really remembered the song because I guess that was like played a lot around that time at a school.
- 4:00SPEAKER_01: That song was huge.
- 4:01SPEAKER_01: Absolute banger.
- 4:03SPEAKER_01: Uh but and I kind of remembered the plot, but re-watching it, I was like, this is a masterpiece, actually.
- 4:09SPEAKER_01: I think it's a really good film.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: So Alec, do you know how many times you've seen it?
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: Like, do you have a guess?
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: I think I must have seen it, I would say I saw it three between between three and six times in my teenage years.
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 4:23SPEAKER_01: It's on like not once, but not 20, and uh then once today.
- 4:28SPEAKER_01: So yeah, I'm gonna say like five times in my life I've seen this.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: Oh, you watched it today as well.
- 4:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 4:33SPEAKER_01: So I've spent what it's like an hour and a half.
- 4:35SPEAKER_01: I've sp Oh my god, I literally can't even add that.
- 4:37SPEAKER_01: I've I've spent like seven and a half hours of my life watching this film, and I don't regret a single minute.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: No, it's a fun movie.
- 4:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's a delight.
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: I actually think it's like a feminist masterpiece, really.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: I have questions about that, but we'll get into that.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: Uh we'll come back to that later once we talk once we talk about the movie.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: Um do you remember how you came across it?
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: Do you just do you just remember always it just always kind of being always existing?
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: I live in a world where Koyo Jugly has always existed, will always exist.
- 5:14SPEAKER_01: Um it is, it has been, it always will be.
- 5:17SPEAKER_01: Uh no, I think I will have I I think I can't remember owning a video of it or anything, and I don't know why we would have done that because I am the eldest child in my family.
- 5:27SPEAKER_01: It doesn't really seem like my parents' type of film.
- 5:30SPEAKER_01: But so I think I must have just come across it on TV and watched it.
- 5:33SPEAKER_01: And then probably because like, do you remember when you used to watch films like that?
- 5:36SPEAKER_01: And it's like you'd always see little bits of the film over time, like you watch it from halfway through once, and then maybe you catch it at the beginning, but you've like never ever seen the first six minutes.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:47SPEAKER_01: So I think I probably peace.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: It's also probably it's probably at the time when like um like so say we're 14 and 15, like uh it's the time where like was barely anything on as well, so you just watch whatever movie was on.
- 5:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you literally watch what is given to you, and that would have been quite a good one.
- 6:03SPEAKER_01: If if that was on, I would have been like relatively exciting, excited, I think, actually.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm sure that's probably how I watched it as well.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: It's just like it was on and there was nothing else, and I just got round to it.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: I was just like, oh, I've heard of this, I'll watch it.
- 6:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 6:17SPEAKER_01: Well, you you'd have heard of it?
- 6:18SPEAKER_01: You think you heard of it?
- 6:19SPEAKER_01: Do you do you remember friends ever talk?
- 6:21SPEAKER_01: I don't remember anyone ever talking about it with me, but maybe they did.
- 6:25SPEAKER_01: It does have a sleepover film vibe.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: Maybe for you, probably not for me.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: I think our was ours were like I remember like Road Trip and American Party.
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: That's what boys were watching at Sleepovers.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 6:37SPEAKER_01: I think I would have watched that.
- 6:38SPEAKER_01: I'd the I'd I'd quite like weird friends who often at Sleepover, when Big Brother had just started, we'd spend all night watching the Big Brother.
- 6:46SPEAKER_01: You know when it was like one all night and then we're just asleep.
- 6:48SPEAKER_01: And then and then once at Sleepover, I watched that film Dogville with Nicole Kidman.
- 6:55SPEAKER_01: Oh no.
- 6:56SPEAKER_01: It's like real art house friends.
- 6:58SPEAKER_01: Probably a real relief to get to see Coyote Ugly instead.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: You're like, no, we need to put on something light.
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: This is this is so depressing right now.
- 7:06SPEAKER_01: Let me watch Jason Biggs get his dick sucked, please.
- 7:10SPEAKER_01: Anything but this.
- 7:14SPEAKER_01: I'm sure that doesn't really happen in American Pie, but he should definitely wants it to.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: One of them does, I can't remember who.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: I haven't seen that in a long time either.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: But yeah, uh this in this movie, um so the descriptive plot, like the kind of the basic plot of it is that it's a it's so this is another thing.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: This is probably like the fourth movie I've done on this list that we've done on this list that's um like the same basic premise, which is that Yeah.
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: A girl goes from she quits her job, leaves, goes moves to the big city, uh, to chase her dreams, and in terms of her dreams here, she leaves.
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: So the one difference here is that she leaves, she moves 40 minutes away.
- 8:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, she moves from New Jersey to New York.
- 8:03SPEAKER_01: When I first started watching it, and then at the beginning they're like, You're going to New York.
- 8:07SPEAKER_01: I was like, Does she live in like Texas?
- 8:08SPEAKER_01: Like, I couldn't remember where she's literally Jersey.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: It's 40 because she's like, I'll be back Sunday.
- 8:15SPEAKER_01: There's just no stakes, and her friend takes her into the city, and then she's like crying about not seeing her again.
- 8:20SPEAKER_01: But then actually, she doesn't see her friend that much for a lot of the film.
- 8:22SPEAKER_01: Maybe she just No, it's a film about a girl who's a bad friend, fundamentally.
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: Well, her this one thing takes over her life, which is she discovers this first of all, she's trying to get any uh any kind of she takes her like musical tapes to uh all these record labels.
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: Nobody's interested, obviously, because you can't just hand a record a tape to a record label.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: Um so she winds up in uh at this coyote bar, which is a a bar where all these women get up on the tables and dance on the bar and dance.
- 8:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it looks like it's a cracking night out.
- 8:55SPEAKER_01: It looks amazing.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: It does.
- 8:57SPEAKER_00: It does.
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: I didn't realise it was a real place.
- 9:00SPEAKER_01: So it's isn't it a chain?
- 9:02SPEAKER_01: There's a chain of things.
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: It is a chain now.
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: It started off as a real place in '96.
- 9:06SPEAKER_01: And it's literally the film is literally based on the real place, or they just took the name.
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: It's based on like the real place, I think.
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: Like I don't think the whole thing.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: I don't think her story.
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: I don't think her story is based on it, but I think they took like the elements of the of what's actually happening in the bar.
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: Oh, that's cool.
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: I'm sure they heightened them as well, because there's no way like the police were coming in and like they were I don't know.
- 9:27SPEAKER_01: Maybe that bit where they set the bar on fire and they're dancing in the fire.
- 9:31SPEAKER_01: You don't think that happens?
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: That that's the only bit I think they kept for the real reason.
- 9:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 9:38SPEAKER_01: I mean it looks like a great bar.
- 9:41SPEAKER_01: The funny thing about it is that it is the type of bar that I think normally I would hate, but when I watch that film, I really want to go to that bar.
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: I'm I completely agree.
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: I'm like, I would hate that in real life, but I also really enjoy watching this, and I'd probably want to go there.
- 9:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's like so busy, but then when they really get into it, it's like everyone's having a really good time, and even when it kicks off, it then like calms down because she starts singing and everyone's like really happy again.
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: That's that that is such a ridiculous uh scene.
- 10:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's the wildest thing in the whole film.
- 10:11SPEAKER_01: What else?
- 10:12SPEAKER_01: What else?
- 10:12SPEAKER_01: What other films have you done that have this?
- 10:14SPEAKER_01: What do you think is the most similar plot to this plot?
- 10:17SPEAKER_00: Um burlesque.
- 10:19SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, yeah.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: Burlesque is very similar.
- 10:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:22SPEAKER_00: Um, and to a heavier extent, Showgirls.
- 10:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 10:27SPEAKER_01: Fine, fine, fine, fine.
- 10:28SPEAKER_01: It's all about cracking into the arts.
- 10:31SPEAKER_01: But what I really like about this protagonist is that she wants to be a songwriter, not a singer, and that's very crucial.
- 10:40SPEAKER_01: That that really vibes with me.
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: As someone who is a writer.
- 10:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's like I don't want to be on stage either, but if I had to dance on a bar, I definitely would.
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: But you do stand up as well, don't you?
- 10:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it is my bar dancing.
- 10:53SPEAKER_01: I I do that, I am in agony on the way up, and then I do it, and then afterwards I'm like, I need to drink a lot.
- 11:01SPEAKER_00: I know the feeling having done stand up one time.
- 11:04SPEAKER_01: Just once?
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: I've done it once and I was it was terrifying.
- 11:08SPEAKER_01: Did you how do you think you did?
- 11:11SPEAKER_00: I did okay, but it was at an improv night, so I was very low.
- 11:16SPEAKER_01: I'm kidding, that's not true at all.
- 11:19SPEAKER_00: It was lots of people I knew in the audience.
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: So I was like, oh, this is fine.
- 11:23SPEAKER_00: And in and improv audiences are much like yeah, like improv audiences, you know what they're like.
- 11:27SPEAKER_00: They're just yeah, lovely.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: They're having the best time.
- 11:36SPEAKER_01: The thing that really struck me re-watching it was that I was like, this is a problematic film for me because I am desperate to say coyote ugly, but I realise it's actually coyote ugly.
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: Coyote, yeah.
- 11:49SPEAKER_01: I really struggle with I have no idea why I want to call it that so badly.
- 11:55SPEAKER_01: But I'm desperate to say coyote every time.
- 11:59SPEAKER_01: Who knows?
- 12:00SPEAKER_01: One of the world's great mysteries.
- 12:03SPEAKER_00: Must just be Yeah, the way it looks.
- 12:07SPEAKER_01: I'm just reading it as it is.
- 12:09SPEAKER_01: But I've seen the film and I've heard them say it, and I still don't like saying it like that.
- 12:12SPEAKER_01: Um sorry, and she was you doing the plot.
- 12:14SPEAKER_01: Do you need to do you need to finish the plot?
- 12:17SPEAKER_00: I mean, that's the basic plot.
- 12:19SPEAKER_00: She goes there, then that that's that's and then she gets a job there, and that's the basic plot of it.
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: She um instead of like getting pursuing her songwriting career, she she gets a job at this place, and she like she's very nervous initially because she's like doesn't like performing on stage, but then she kind of she's also got this bar experience as well from working at a pizza place, so yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 12:41SPEAKER_01: She's prep and she uses her pizza place experience to like break up some fights to really prove herself.
- 12:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, which is why she gets a second audition.
- 12:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: Um so I guess like what um what what made you pick this in the first place then?
- 13:01SPEAKER_00: What what drew you to it?
- 13:02SPEAKER_01: So I do I really do have fond memories of watching it, and I had the feeling I liked it, and then when I rewatched it, I was like, do you know what?
- 13:09SPEAKER_01: I do actually really like this film.
- 13:10SPEAKER_01: I think as you say, it's not a completely original plot, but I think it's actually in some ways quite ahead of its time.
- 13:18SPEAKER_01: They're like kind of well, they're like women kind of trading on and selling their sexuality, and but it it's really only lightly touched on that that's a bad thing, and it's not intrinsically a bad thing in the film either.
- 13:32SPEAKER_01: It's like her uh boyfriend kind of accuses her of getting waylaid from her real dreams of being a songwriter to because she's working in the bar too much, but he's like it's only a very soft suggestion that the problem is that she's like dressing Sloty, whereas actually they're like really empowered and they really control like they run that bar and they like make a lot of money and keep it all safe, and they they're really skilled and they're all they all like get on with each other even though they have a rivalry.
- 14:01SPEAKER_01: And I think it's like actually a positive depiction of something I care about, which is the the idea that if you are an artist, you are some something about you is lessened by engaging in the gig economy, even though everyone must work, yeah.
- 14:16SPEAKER_01: Or most of us must work.
- 14:18SPEAKER_01: So I think it was actually it's actually a really good representation of that.
- 14:22SPEAKER_01: And then she does write some really good songs and she keeps working on it and she likes gets there in the end, even though she's nervous.
- 14:29SPEAKER_00: Did you know that um Leanne Rhimes wrote uh sung all the songs that like her it's so every time you hear her voice it's Leanne Rhymes?
- 14:36SPEAKER_01: No, is that true?
- 14:38SPEAKER_01: So it's what I read on the side.
- 14:43SPEAKER_01: Yes, yes.
- 14:43SPEAKER_01: Oh my god.
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: That's where I was like, what that's what really freaked me out at the end.
- 14:49SPEAKER_01: That's insane.
- 14:50SPEAKER_01: I actually didn't know that, and I'm surprised because I read a little fact that um Piper Parabo or whatever her name was was in like loads of musicals in high school.
- 15:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 15:01SPEAKER_00: So you'd expect I don't know, it's just it's very strange.
- 15:04SPEAKER_01: Now I know she's not singing, I am a bit less impressed because I don't think she's bringing that much to the role other than the singing.
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: It's like a single-say that I really like her in it.
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: I really like her in it.
- 15:17SPEAKER_01: I think she's a gentle presence.
- 15:20SPEAKER_00: I think she's the best one in it out of everyone.
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: She's my favourite character out of all of them.
- 15:24SPEAKER_01: No, what about um is it Lil who runs the bar?
- 15:28SPEAKER_01: Is that her name?
- 15:29SPEAKER_01: Lil.
- 15:30SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, Lil.
- 15:31SPEAKER_00: She's great.
- 15:32SPEAKER_01: That's a great character.
- 15:33SPEAKER_01: She's like, I'm not your friend.
- 15:35SPEAKER_01: Like, yeah, you run your business, bitch.
- 15:39SPEAKER_00: But also, like, yeah, I guess, I don't know.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: I always get annoyed by that character.
- 15:44SPEAKER_01: Why?
- 15:45SPEAKER_00: Because I feel like let this person do what they want to do as well.
- 15:50SPEAKER_00: Don't be so mean all the time.
- 15:51SPEAKER_01: She's trying to run a business.
- 15:54SPEAKER_01: She's gotta keep her bar afloat.
- 15:56SPEAKER_00: Okay, but don't tell her she can don't tell her she can leave and then like take it away from her.
- 16:00SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, that is crazy.
- 16:01SPEAKER_01: That is the worst bit of the film actually.
- 16:02SPEAKER_01: It when so what happens is she's asked in advance if she can leave at 10.
- 16:07SPEAKER_01: Then Lil is like, no way, you have to stay.
- 16:10SPEAKER_01: Look how busy this place is.
- 16:12SPEAKER_01: But her boyfriend is set up for her to be in an open mic, and then he has to give away his comic book.
- 16:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 16:20SPEAKER_00: Which is very sad.
- 16:22SPEAKER_01: That's sort of rubbish.
- 16:23SPEAKER_01: You would just leave.
- 16:24SPEAKER_01: I think you would just leave, but maybe that's I'd probably just leave, yeah.
- 16:27SPEAKER_01: I've never stayed in a job very long.
- 16:31SPEAKER_00: Although saying that I did stay in a job for three years that I didn't want to stay in, so who knows?
- 16:36SPEAKER_01: Maybe you need a little more coyote ugly spirit in your life.
- 16:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 16:41SPEAKER_00: Let's go through let's go through the plot itself.
- 16:43SPEAKER_00: Let's go let's discuss it uh like from beginning to end, and we'll discuss it as it goes.
- 16:48SPEAKER_00: Um so uh it be it opens with her working in the pizza restaurant, and um it's her last day, and she's quitting, and so she has to like kind of um sign a check, basically.
- 17:03SPEAKER_00: Or is it a check that she signs?
- 17:05SPEAKER_00: Is some kind of thing?
- 17:05SPEAKER_01: She signs like the back of a stub, doesn't she?
- 17:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 17:10SPEAKER_00: Basically, it's it's it's to say that that she's um she's gonna be famous, but like loads of people do this and like never come back uh and never become famous.
- 17:19SPEAKER_00: That's what that's what he's implying there.
- 17:21SPEAKER_01: No one, that's the setup.
- 17:22SPEAKER_01: They say no one who's ever signed this thing has ever become famous, and it's absolutely covered in people's signatures, and then those guys that are watching are like that was cursed because no one has ever left that town to be in a position and had success again though, 40 minutes away from New York.
- 17:42SPEAKER_00: Remember this, it's yeah, it's like just go in and give it a go.
- 17:45SPEAKER_01: You don't have to give up your whole life, just go do one open mic, see how you feel, come back to the pizza place.
- 17:50SPEAKER_01: Maybe that's a better fit for you.
- 17:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I feel like she could travel.
- 17:53SPEAKER_00: Like, I'm I don't know how I'm like 30 minutes away from London right now.
- 17:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you could do it, you could get into the city, you could play one song, you'd be home by 10.
- 18:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I yeah, I I travel in like almost every day, it's not bad.
- 18:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's kind of bizarre, isn't it?
- 18:10SPEAKER_01: That the implication that she's moving so far, but they they must have been really struggling because they want her to like move to the big city, but they also want her to like be kind of a small town girl and be in touch with her family and friends, don't they?
- 18:21SPEAKER_01: And like have a they got John Goodman to be the dad.
- 18:23SPEAKER_01: They're like, John Goodman's not just gonna be in it for 10 minutes at the beginning, we're gonna see him again.
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: She better live close to you say that, you say that.
- 18:32SPEAKER_00: He said he signed on for the paycheck, first of all.
- 18:36SPEAKER_00: Good good for you, mate.
- 18:37SPEAKER_00: Um, yeah, and then also he was nowhere in it.
- 18:42SPEAKER_00: I read that he was in it nowhere near as much, and then they did a test screening, and everyone was like, Oh, we loved his character, please put him in more.
- 18:49SPEAKER_00: You have to go reshoot some scenes, like being in there.
- 18:51SPEAKER_00: Really?
- 18:52SPEAKER_01: That was the thing that people people watch this film, which was like sexy girls at a bar, and they were like, you know what it's missing?
- 18:58SPEAKER_01: More John Goodman.
- 18:59SPEAKER_01: John Goodman! I mean I sympathise, but that actually is a stunning fact to me.
- 19:05SPEAKER_00: It's like there's so many weird facts about this movie that it's just like, well, what?
- 19:10SPEAKER_00: And then uh who was it that ghost ghost wrote this?
- 19:14SPEAKER_00: There's someone that ghostwrote it, I'm sure.
- 19:16SPEAKER_00: I read.
- 19:17SPEAKER_01: Oh, I didn't even look at that.
- 19:18SPEAKER_01: I knew there were loads and loads of producers, and there are like lots of music producers and things attached to it.
- 19:24SPEAKER_00: Maybe that's what I read.
- 19:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and it was like loads and loads of people in the music industry producing it, which I don't know.
- 19:29SPEAKER_01: The songs are they are good, they're good songs, but are they such good songs that you need like six music producers on this film?
- 19:37SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 19:40SPEAKER_00: Well, it's one of the most important parts of it.
- 19:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 19:44SPEAKER_01: I mean it's our entire motivation, isn't it?
- 19:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 19:49SPEAKER_00: It is, and you're not gonna believe this, Kevin Smith.
- 19:54SPEAKER_02: What?
- 19:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Kevin Smith ghost wrote like some rewrites, did some rewrites of it.
- 20:01SPEAKER_01: That Kevin Smith or a different Kevin Smith?
- 20:04SPEAKER_00: No, that Kevin Smith.
- 20:07SPEAKER_01: What?
- 20:08SPEAKER_01: That honestly blows my mind.
- 20:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 20:13SPEAKER_00: And it said even says in the trivia, despite what you think, he did not write the comic book stuff.
- 20:20SPEAKER_00: What?
- 20:21SPEAKER_01: That is absolutely wild to me.
- 20:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I know.
- 20:26SPEAKER_00: He is the last person I would place with this movie.
- 20:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it actually truly it's like really thrown me.
- 20:31SPEAKER_01: I'm like rethinking a lot of things of my life on the basis of that information.
- 20:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean it's very not him.
- 20:38SPEAKER_01: But a lot of people do that, don't they?
- 20:39SPEAKER_01: I think it's like Yeah.
- 20:41SPEAKER_01: It's it's a common thing.
- 20:42SPEAKER_01: I accept that that happens.
- 20:44SPEAKER_01: Again, would prefer it if a woman had written this film, but it was the 90s, noughties.
- 20:50SPEAKER_01: There simply were no women back then, as we know.
- 20:52SPEAKER_00: No, no, there's no women.
- 20:54SPEAKER_00: Women can't write.
- 20:55SPEAKER_00: What are you talking about?
- 20:56SPEAKER_01: We had not hit the great women writer birthing.
- 21:01SPEAKER_00: Not until you came along.
- 21:02SPEAKER_00: That was you're the first female writer.
- 21:04SPEAKER_01: I saw this film and I was like, I bet I could write one of these.
- 21:10SPEAKER_00: Um so then um, yeah, she goes, she quits her job, she goes to karaoke at a bar, and she sings I will survive with her friends.
- 21:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, I think that's quite a nice little setup, actually, because it's like she's so nervous, she doesn't really like to perform in part in front of people.
- 21:26SPEAKER_01: They do a lot of signposting of that.
- 21:28SPEAKER_01: There's really no surprises in this film.
- 21:30SPEAKER_01: They tell you everything you're gonna see before you see it.
- 21:32SPEAKER_01: They even play Can't Fight the Moonlight as soundtrack before she writes the song.
- 21:40SPEAKER_01: Which, in the structural integrity of the world, is a wild choice, I think.
- 21:46SPEAKER_00: The other song they play a lot is um unbelievable.
- 21:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, definitely.
- 21:50SPEAKER_01: Do you think they bought the track so much we're gonna use the whole thing?
- 21:54SPEAKER_00: They you they play it maybe four or five times in this movie, and like, oh, it's again, again, so funny.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: And all those music producers on board, they were like, we really want to push this.
- 22:05SPEAKER_00: Well, maybe they all had like a producing credit on that song.
- 22:07SPEAKER_00: They're like, we're gonna get some money out of this.
- 22:11SPEAKER_01: That's what I heard with the um the Cats film recently that the Andrew Lloyd Webber had to write that new song because he wasn't gonna get like the same amount of royalties on all the old songs.
- 22:22SPEAKER_01: He was like, I'm gonna have a new one in so I can make some more money on this.
- 22:26SPEAKER_00: I didn't even know he wrote a new song for it.
- 22:28SPEAKER_00: I have not seen it.
- 22:29SPEAKER_01: Taylor Swift sings it, it's very weird.
- 22:31SPEAKER_00: Oh, I thought Taylor Swift wrote that one.
- 22:33SPEAKER_01: I think they co-wrote it.
- 22:35SPEAKER_00: Oh maybe I'm making this up.
- 22:37SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 22:37SPEAKER_01: I did not focus that closely on the Cats film, but that was the information I heard that it was like he kind of had to do a new song to be able to make any bank on the music portion of the film Cats.
- 22:48SPEAKER_00: That is one movie that I refuse to ever do on this.
- 22:51SPEAKER_00: Like, if anyone picks that I'm like, no, you're not.
- 22:54SPEAKER_01: It's unbelievable.
- 22:55SPEAKER_00: No, it's so bad.
- 22:58SPEAKER_00: Um this movie is much better.
- 23:01SPEAKER_01: Um I would say this movie is better than Cats.
- 23:03SPEAKER_01: That would be my top top line of my review.
- 23:06SPEAKER_00: Good.
- 23:08SPEAKER_00: That's what I'm gonna put in the title.
- 23:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 23:12SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, uh and then she likes so she goes to John Goodwin, she goes and talks to her dad, and she's like telling her he's very nervous about her leaving.
- 23:20SPEAKER_00: Um and then they talk about her going to New York and saying she's in New Jersey, and I wrote down she's not going very far.
- 23:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and then he's like, Everyone gets murdered in New York, it's more of a statistic if you stay alive.
- 23:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 23:32SPEAKER_00: She's like, Yeah, fine.
- 23:34SPEAKER_00: And then she moves to Chinatown.
- 23:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 23:38SPEAKER_01: In this like crazy chaotic flat, which is like the thing that annoys me about it is they try and make it look like real raggedy.
- 23:45SPEAKER_01: It's like, oh, it's look at it, it's like everything's falling down, but it's also like she lives alone in the middle of a major city in like a decent floor space, so I don't want to.
- 23:55SPEAKER_00: Chinatown is not a cheap place to live.
- 23:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's oh my god, no, it's hip now, I think.
- 23:58SPEAKER_01: It's she's in the center.
- 24:01SPEAKER_01: That was like an expensive flat.
- 24:02SPEAKER_01: And the classic trope, which I don't know how many flats in New York have bathtubs in the main room, but I feel like every film I've ever seen with a flat in New York has had a bathtub in the main room.
- 24:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I agree.
- 24:15SPEAKER_00: I don't get what that is.
- 24:17SPEAKER_00: Um there's also another thing that happens.
- 24:19SPEAKER_00: Uh so her friend, like uh uh what's her friend's name?
- 24:22SPEAKER_01: It's um the one from um oh my god, I can't even remember.
- 24:27SPEAKER_01: Who was in uh two two not two men and a baby, two and a half men, isn't it her?
- 24:32SPEAKER_00: Two and a half men, yeah.
- 24:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 24:34SPEAKER_00: Uh Gloria.
- 24:36SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 24:36SPEAKER_00: Her name's Gloria.
- 24:38SPEAKER_00: So she gives her Um like a a wad of cash and she likes sticks.
- 24:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like puts it in the freezer and she's like, I'm gonna freeze her assets.
- 24:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 24:48SPEAKER_00: What's really weird about that is on the last episode of this podcast that I I recorded, it was about Uptown girls.
- 24:55SPEAKER_00: The same thing.
- 24:56SPEAKER_00: So she has she's in New York, she freezes her cash in she puts her cash in the freezer that, and we've talked about it and we're like, was that a normal thing back then?
- 25:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it was.
- 25:04SPEAKER_00: Evidently it was.
- 25:05SPEAKER_00: What?
- 25:05SPEAKER_01: Keeping it in the case.
- 25:06SPEAKER_00: Evidently it was a thing in New York to like put your cause Yeah.
- 25:10SPEAKER_01: Oh that's funny.
- 25:11SPEAKER_01: But then it would be the first place everyone would look.
- 25:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 25:15SPEAKER_00: I've just fridge a mess with them.
- 25:23SPEAKER_00: But also, why is that a thing?
- 25:25SPEAKER_00: I don't get what the purpose of that is.
- 25:27SPEAKER_01: It is really bizarre, isn't it?
- 25:29SPEAKER_01: It has the sort of feel of a safe with none of the safety.
- 25:33SPEAKER_00: Mmm.
- 25:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, absolutely.
- 25:35SPEAKER_00: And I feel like I don't know, I it's just very bizarre.
- 25:39SPEAKER_01: I don't think it's that's funny that it's come up more than once.
- 25:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 25:43SPEAKER_00: Not not just more than once, it came up back to back.
- 25:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 25:46SPEAKER_01: It's a sign.
- 25:47SPEAKER_01: Have you checked your freezer?
- 25:48SPEAKER_01: You might have something hidden in there.
- 25:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I've got loads of cash in there.
- 25:53SPEAKER_01: You hid it.
- 25:54SPEAKER_01: Good feeling.
- 25:55SPEAKER_00: Oh no, I've spoiled it now, I'm gonna have to cut that out.
- 25:59SPEAKER_00: Um she starts to record songs in her apartment, and then immediately like the neighbour starts banging on the wall and like tells her to shut up, so she goes up to the roof and starts singing, which is just it's it's such a nice roof as well.
- 26:12SPEAKER_00: Like to have to have a lot of things.
- 26:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I love the idea that you can just access your roof, please.
- 26:19SPEAKER_00: Having your rooftop and just like going out to up there to perform and like having peace and like looking out to this New York skyline, like that would be amazing.
- 26:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, incredible.
- 26:28SPEAKER_01: I got hold of a key to I I live in a block a block of flats or a building with flats in it, and I got hold of a key key to the roof, and I was like, I'm gonna go and hang up on that on the roof the whole time.
- 26:38SPEAKER_01: I went up, it's like a sliver of roof, it's it's just like horrible.
- 26:42SPEAKER_01: It's like um filthy, it's like gravelled, it's got loads and loads of satellite dishes on it.
- 26:47SPEAKER_01: I was like so sad to put the sunbathe up there during lockdown.
- 26:52SPEAKER_01: Just like anything to be outside.
- 26:54SPEAKER_01: It's like it's kind of a roof terrace if you close your eyes.
- 26:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's we don't we don't do not get the same thing in London.
- 27:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, that roof is beautiful, she's up there, and we see her on the roof several times.
- 27:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's the only place she can record music, apparently.
- 27:10SPEAKER_01: Um those acoustics, those top of a building New York City acoustics, nothing better.
- 27:16SPEAKER_00: You know, when people are passing in in like police cars and stuff.
- 27:20SPEAKER_00: Probably ideal.
- 27:21SPEAKER_01: Texture.
- 27:23SPEAKER_00: Um so she let she recorded a tape, she tries to hand it to all these record labels, and they're obviously like, no.
- 27:30SPEAKER_01: Because Yeah, and then one of the women at one of the desks is like, I can't even help myself.
- 27:35SPEAKER_01: Why would I help you?
- 27:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 27:37SPEAKER_00: That woman is such a like weird stereotype that it made me uncomfortable.
- 27:41SPEAKER_01: They needed to really clearly signpost that no one was gonna take it from her.
- 27:46SPEAKER_01: There's a lot of very clear signposting in this.
- 27:51SPEAKER_00: So she goes to she winds up at a bar, and playing at the bar is the calling, the music that the band calling, playing wherever you will go, just randomly.
- 28:03SPEAKER_01: I don't know what this bar is, but that was a very exciting appearance for them though, I'm sure, being in this film.
- 28:11SPEAKER_01: They were like, This is it, man.
- 28:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 28:16SPEAKER_00: Is this in love actually?
- 28:18SPEAKER_00: They have in the song.
- 28:20SPEAKER_00: Um so she she asked the guy, like um behind the bar, like, oh, because there's this guy like wandering around, she catches his eye, and he's just like very cool to her.
- 28:30SPEAKER_00: And she's like, Oh, who's that guy?
- 28:32SPEAKER_00: He's like jokingly like, oh, that's the music manager, and you he's like clearly joking with her.
- 28:37SPEAKER_00: And she's like, he's like, Oh, that's Mrs.
- 28:40SPEAKER_00: Madon Mr.
- 28:40SPEAKER_00: Madonna Mr.
- 28:41SPEAKER_00: O'Donnell, he's the music manager of this place.
- 28:43SPEAKER_00: He like he f he goes around and he finds people, and so she obviously hands him her tape and and he plays it off like he is the music manager.
- 28:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, confidently and she immediately finds out he's lying and gets angry and she storms off, but he follows her home creepily.
- 29:05SPEAKER_01: Is it is it that time he follows her?
- 29:07SPEAKER_01: He gets called out, doesn't he?
- 29:08SPEAKER_01: By the the um the oh the real owner comes out and is like you're a punk and then he follows her.
- 29:15SPEAKER_00: Is that the real owner or is that just that he follows her home, yeah?
- 29:18SPEAKER_01: Oh my god, I absolutely wiped that, even though I've watched it today.
- 29:21SPEAKER_01: Alright, yeah.
- 29:22SPEAKER_01: But he's still got her tape and she like doesn't have her tape anymore.
- 29:26SPEAKER_01: He's does he still have her tape?
- 29:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he must have.
- 29:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because she has to go and get it from him later.
- 29:31SPEAKER_01: Sorry, I'm disrupting your telling of this.
- 29:34SPEAKER_00: No, no, it's fine.
- 29:35SPEAKER_00: Go like say what you need to say with the I just want to say he still had the tape.
- 29:40SPEAKER_00: That is important.
- 29:41SPEAKER_00: It's a clear, it's a clear plot point later on.
- 29:44SPEAKER_00: Um but the the thing is he's following her home, which is really creepy, and she like gets lost and everything, she can't find her way home.
- 29:52SPEAKER_00: Um and she like and then so he knows where he lives basically.
- 29:57SPEAKER_00: Um and then that's it, he just goes home.
- 30:00SPEAKER_00: And that's that's the scene.
- 30:03SPEAKER_00: Like that's the best.
- 30:04SPEAKER_00: Oh, so yeah.
- 30:06SPEAKER_00: Then she goes to an open mic night and panics immediately when she goes, uh, instead of getting on, say she runs, runs back to her apartment and it's been broken into.
- 30:15SPEAKER_00: The money's been stolen from the freezer.
- 30:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 30:18SPEAKER_00: Obviously not a good place for it.
- 30:19SPEAKER_00: Um It's all pretty bad for her.
- 30:22SPEAKER_00: It's really bad.
- 30:24SPEAKER_00: So she goes into a uh she like starts crying and everything.
- 30:29SPEAKER_00: She goes to she goes to a diner and she has like a couple of dollars to her name, and the guy behind the diner gives her a slice of pie on the house, which is nice.
- 30:38SPEAKER_00: And she sees like three girls making like loads of noise, and they happen to be three of the coyotes.
- 30:45SPEAKER_01: And they're having the best time ever, the guy behind the dinner.
- 30:48SPEAKER_00: Best time ever.
- 30:49SPEAKER_01: But the the like servers are like dancing along with them.
- 30:51SPEAKER_01: They're talking about how they've made three hundred dollars each.
- 30:54SPEAKER_01: It's the big time.
- 30:56SPEAKER_00: Amazing.
- 30:57SPEAKER_00: Three hundred dollars a night would be so nice to be.
- 31:00SPEAKER_01: In 2000 as well.
- 31:02SPEAKER_01: That's like there's some inflation there.
- 31:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's like five, six hundred now.
- 31:06SPEAKER_01: There's gotta be a bar you could dance on.
- 31:09SPEAKER_01: Come on, think big.
- 31:10SPEAKER_00: Yes, I'm gonna I'm gonna open a coyote ugly bar of my own and dance for everyone.
- 31:15SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna be the John Goodman.
- 31:18SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 31:19SPEAKER_00: Of London.
- 31:22SPEAKER_00: Um, so she sees them.
- 31:24SPEAKER_00: I didn't know Tyra Banks was in this.
- 31:25SPEAKER_00: That was a surprise to me.
- 31:26SPEAKER_00: I don't remember being in it.
- 31:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and the thing I okay, this is super feminist.
- 31:30SPEAKER_01: This is great.
- 31:30SPEAKER_01: That they're like, so the setup is that they they to her are like, you're are you sure you want to go off to law school?
- 31:35SPEAKER_01: And she's like, Yeah, it's time for me to go to law school.
- 31:38SPEAKER_01: And that's what frees up a space.
- 31:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 31:41SPEAKER_00: Nobody ever tries to like, at least within all of that world, they don't try and talk them out.
- 31:47SPEAKER_00: And except for Lily, who kind of does that, uh, with that one scene.
- 31:51SPEAKER_00: Uh nobody ever.
- 31:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think you can like want your good employees to stay, but also it's like a world where they are all working in a bar to achieve their dreams and having a nice time doing it.
- 32:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's it's a nice thing.
- 32:04SPEAKER_00: It is, it's nice.
- 32:05SPEAKER_01: It's extremely serious analysis, yes.
- 32:09SPEAKER_00: Um and then they they what happens here?
- 32:14SPEAKER_00: I wrote down why does everyone guess her hometown?
- 32:16SPEAKER_00: So I guess she does she talk to No, she goes to she goes to the bar, she shows up to the bar.
- 32:21SPEAKER_01: She's like, Guess what?
- 32:22SPEAKER_01: I live in a place 40 minutes from here, where do you think it is?
- 32:25SPEAKER_01: And they're all like, Is it Jersey?
- 32:26SPEAKER_00: No, they were trying to guess her accident, and they're all like uh these places like really far away.
- 32:30SPEAKER_00: And she's like, No, it's Jersey, basically, the entire time.
- 32:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, mad, mad.
- 32:35SPEAKER_00: So Lily like Lily gives her an audition at the b at the bar, and um she comes back for the first night, and it's wild.
- 32:43SPEAKER_00: It's such it's just like so intimidating if that's the first time you're seeing it and you've got to get up on stage.
- 32:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, she's out of her depth, she's wearing her full-length t-shirt, and Libby like Libby Libby, Libby, Lily, Lily is her name.
- 32:57SPEAKER_01: Lily like rips off the sleeve, and then she introduces her and she's like, This is a she this is Jersey.
- 33:04SPEAKER_01: She's a kindergarten teacher who is also a nun.
- 33:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 33:08SPEAKER_00: Because everything's got to be some kind of like fetishization of something of these women.
- 33:13SPEAKER_01: I it's branded though, isn't it?
- 33:15SPEAKER_01: I'm into the brand.
- 33:16SPEAKER_01: She's the nun one.
- 33:17SPEAKER_01: One of them is the like uh the the like tease, and one of them is the mean one.
- 33:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 33:23SPEAKER_01: Why not?
- 33:24SPEAKER_01: All specters of womanhood.
- 33:25SPEAKER_00: I want to know what Tyra was.
- 33:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah, the law one.
- 33:29SPEAKER_01: Just constantly talking about legal shit.
- 33:31SPEAKER_01: They're like, please, we should go to law school.
- 33:36SPEAKER_00: She's the one that's getting him in trouble constantly.
- 33:41SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, so they um they set fire to the table.
- 33:46SPEAKER_00: Uh they cut the one guy's hair at one point, they cut his ponytail off.
- 33:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 33:51SPEAKER_01: They're having the time in their life, it's like chaos.
- 33:54SPEAKER_00: It's absolute chaos.
- 33:55SPEAKER_00: And then she so she struggles to keep up uh with like serving drinks and everything and dancing and all this stuff.
- 34:01SPEAKER_00: And someone asks for a drink, and she like goes to serve them, and they're like, No, you don't get water, you can't get water here, and then start chanting hell no, H2O, hell no, H2O, like constantly, and they spray him, spray him, H2O.
- 34:12SPEAKER_00: And they just spray him with all this stuff.
- 34:14SPEAKER_00: I don't know if they're spraying more.
- 34:15SPEAKER_01: I like the vibe of this bar.
- 34:17SPEAKER_01: It's like they only serve like three types of hard liquor, that's it.
- 34:20SPEAKER_01: It's like everything's in a shot glass, isn't that the rule?
- 34:22SPEAKER_00: And you can have a why not?
- 34:23SPEAKER_00: I think they can have a beer as well, can't they?
- 34:25SPEAKER_01: Okay, I I don't remember that b extra bit ad being added in, but I believe you.
- 34:30SPEAKER_01: She's drinking a beer because they're spitting their shots back into a beer bottle, aren't they?
- 34:34SPEAKER_01: To not get drunk.
- 34:35SPEAKER_01: Which is clever.
- 34:35SPEAKER_01: I didn't know.
- 34:37SPEAKER_00: That's a good idea.
- 34:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the next time you need to pretend to drink a lot of shots, uh, chase it with an empty beer bottle.
- 34:44SPEAKER_00: I've never worked behind the bar, but I can imagine that's a thing people do.
- 34:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm sure if you don't want to get really, really wasted.
- 34:52SPEAKER_00: Um but then she gets fired because she can't keep up.
- 34:57SPEAKER_00: She's like, uh, this is too much for me.
- 34:59SPEAKER_00: I can't dance on the stage like them.
- 35:01SPEAKER_00: Which, like, obviously, she's not gonna be able to do that.
- 35:04SPEAKER_00: Like, the first thing is like a choreographed dance.
- 35:07SPEAKER_01: That is the craziest thing that they're doing this uh like super choreographed dance, and then she's like, get up there, Jersey, and she's like, I don't know the but how to do this dance.
- 35:16SPEAKER_01: I don't I'm gonna stop doing the accent.
- 35:18SPEAKER_01: No, please continue to do it.
- 35:19SPEAKER_01: And but how how could she?
- 35:20SPEAKER_01: How is she supposed to?
- 35:21SPEAKER_01: The thing that's sad to me is that I know in my head I would just get up and give it a go.
- 35:25SPEAKER_01: I would try it, yeah.
- 35:26SPEAKER_01: I'd be bad.
- 35:26SPEAKER_01: I would that and then that would be a worse decision than just saying no, I think.
- 35:32SPEAKER_00: I mean, evidently not because she does get fired.
- 35:35SPEAKER_01: And uh I I once went to an audition for something that I did not realize was a dance audition, and uh then they were like, Alright, everyone, now we're gonna do the dance part.
- 35:46SPEAKER_01: And I was like, the worst part was in my head, I was like, Alright, I guess I'll give this a go.
- 35:50SPEAKER_01: And then it went on for an hour, and I think it was bad, and I couldn't leave.
- 35:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, an hour of dance auditions, yeah.
- 35:56SPEAKER_01: And everyone else was like wearing leotards, I was like in shorts and a t-shirt.
- 36:00SPEAKER_01: It was so embarrassing.
- 36:01SPEAKER_01: What did you think it was for?
- 36:02SPEAKER_01: So embarrassing.
- 36:03SPEAKER_01: So it was do you know Punch Drunk, the theatre company?
- 36:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 36:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 36:07SPEAKER_01: So they did this thing that was like for young people, and they were like, We're looking for all kinds of creatives, we're looking for like um whatever, dancers and actors and filmmakers.
- 36:15SPEAKER_01: So I was making short films at the time, and I emailed and I was like, I'm a filmmaker.
- 36:20SPEAKER_01: And so they were like, Cool, come along to our audition and say hi.
- 36:24SPEAKER_01: And then what should have been the giveaway was at the end it said wear comfy clothes, and I was just like, That's nice.
- 36:30SPEAKER_01: Like, they want me to be comfortable, they want me to be relaxed, and then uh yeah, I turned up and it was a group dance audition.
- 36:37SPEAKER_00: That's crazy.
- 36:38SPEAKER_00: I would be terrific.
- 36:41SPEAKER_01: And what was it was Did you know the the worst part was it because it was punch drunk, it wasn't even to music, it was to like news reports and animal noises and just like mad found sounds for an hour?
- 36:53SPEAKER_00: Oh my god.
- 36:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, is that is that the worst audition you've ever had?
- 36:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 36:59SPEAKER_01: Well, I've had some absolute stinkers, but that one was on real bad.
- 37:04SPEAKER_01: I really should have left.
- 37:05SPEAKER_01: I absolutely was in the wrong place.
- 37:06SPEAKER_01: I'd walked into the fully wrong room.
- 37:09SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 37:10SPEAKER_00: Did you know it immediately as soon as you walked in?
- 37:12SPEAKER_01: No, well that I should have.
- 37:14SPEAKER_01: I mean, I knew it, but then it was just like something idiot in me was just like, maybe you are in amazing.
- 37:21SPEAKER_01: I could I could do this, and you just don't know it yet.
- 37:23SPEAKER_00: They believe in me.
- 37:24SPEAKER_00: They could they asked me to audition.
- 37:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, like feels right, maybe this is how I find out.
- 37:29SPEAKER_01: And I I had seen a punch drunk show, and I really desperately did want to be in a punch drunk show, even though I knew that it was all dancers, and I was like, there's no it's like I once went to see Cirque de Soleil, and then the minute I then remember Googling how to be uh maybe I was like how to be an acrobat or how to be a clown, and realizing just very quickly that like that was never gonna be a bit.
- 37:50SPEAKER_00: Step one, start at three years old.
- 37:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 37:54SPEAKER_01: And then I did go when I was like um 22 or 23, I went and did an aerial acrobatics class because I was just like so desperate to do it one time and it was extremely hard, and then I never went back.
- 38:07SPEAKER_00: Which ties into your like starting and then never finishing.
- 38:11SPEAKER_01: Literally.
- 38:12SPEAKER_01: I don't think we talked about on the podcast.
- 38:15SPEAKER_00: I can't remember if we talked about it.
- 38:17SPEAKER_01: To reference something we spoke about before, I like to start things and not finish them.
- 38:21SPEAKER_01: Um, and that's why I'm not a professional acrobat.
- 38:26SPEAKER_00: I think that's why a lot of people aren't professional acrobats.
- 38:30SPEAKER_01: I could do, I did one like one trick quite well though.
- 38:33SPEAKER_01: Like I was quite good at the flying trapeze.
- 38:36SPEAKER_01: I wasn't very good, so you had to climb a rope and I couldn't really do that.
- 38:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and then you had to do a static trapeze and I couldn't really do that.
- 38:41SPEAKER_01: But the flying trapeze, because it's like less about cat holding your own body weight, which I couldn't really do, and more about like using momentum.
- 38:50SPEAKER_01: I was actually okay at, I think.
- 38:52SPEAKER_01: I mean, I could do what I literally got my legs up, like it I wasn't like doing tricks.
- 38:57SPEAKER_00: So maybe I am like flipping round Yeah, yeah.
- 39:00SPEAKER_01: It wasn't amazing.
- 39:03SPEAKER_00: Still, that's a start, that's how you begin.
- 39:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you know what?
- 39:06SPEAKER_01: There's still time.
- 39:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 39:08SPEAKER_00: That's what you're gonna do.
- 39:09SPEAKER_00: That's what you should have done during the quarantine.
- 39:13SPEAKER_00: That's what you should have done during the quarantine.
- 39:14SPEAKER_01: You're gonna come out of it perfecting my whole house just like rigged up with trapeze.
- 39:21SPEAKER_00: You're gonna go on your tiny roof.
- 39:26SPEAKER_01: Actually, quite a good idea.
- 39:29SPEAKER_00: Just get like the wire set up so you can walk across it.
- 39:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I have seen I did see lots of people over this period in parks on those like um tightrope things you can do on trees.
- 39:41SPEAKER_00: Oh, I hate that so much.
- 39:42SPEAKER_00: I hate that so much.
- 39:45SPEAKER_01: I don't think they're that they're not the same as tightropes though, are they?
- 39:47SPEAKER_01: Because they're like flat, wide, flat canvas and they like have bounced to them.
- 39:53SPEAKER_00: They're bounced, yeah.
- 39:55SPEAKER_01: Pretty sure I'd be amazing at those if I tried them too.
- 39:57SPEAKER_00: I don't think they're easy either, though.
- 40:00SPEAKER_01: Then it's better than I never know.
- 40:02SPEAKER_01: Never try and you can never fail.
- 40:04SPEAKER_00: If everyone takes it, you know that you would have done this in your in your mind.
- 40:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 40:08SPEAKER_01: Probably would have been great at this.
- 40:09SPEAKER_00: I mean so back I I can't even transition back to the movie with that.
- 40:14SPEAKER_01: Um where are we?
- 40:16SPEAKER_01: I'll find just a second one.
- 40:17SPEAKER_01: Um She stops a fight and oh yeah, okay, so she stops the fight and then that proves that she's like got a bit of fight in her and and Lily likes it.
- 40:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, she's like, You got a second audition.
- 40:30SPEAKER_00: She's like, How did you know how to do all that?
- 40:31SPEAKER_00: And she's like, I got it from uh working at my pizza uh plays during Yeah, working at her real scary pizza joint during football season.
- 40:40SPEAKER_00: Um this is where you this is the point you ring up, she gets her tape back.
- 40:47SPEAKER_00: So she gets Yes, yes and then unbelievable plays again and there's a shopping montage because she has to go and get her clothing and she goes shopping for.
- 40:58SPEAKER_01: I mean that's absolutely wild.
- 40:59SPEAKER_01: But then again, I think it's also like it's a point, you know, she's like shopping for work and also very important for women in business to dress appropriately for the occasion.
- 41:07SPEAKER_01: I support it.
- 41:09SPEAKER_00: And also, if there's not a shopping montage in a rom com, then what are we doing?
- 41:15SPEAKER_00: What are we doing?
- 41:16SPEAKER_00: What are we doing?
- 41:17SPEAKER_01: I agree.
- 41:18SPEAKER_01: Um I like that it's like her and a friend, and it's like she makes friends with that other girl from it, right?
- 41:23SPEAKER_01: From the bar, who gets sent along as like the shopping consultant, and she's like she's starting to make buddies.
- 41:28SPEAKER_00: Although never brought up again anything to do with her.
- 41:31SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 41:32SPEAKER_01: That girl's only in it for like literally two seconds, and then she's just like in the side of shots smiling.
- 41:38SPEAKER_00: Maybe in it because she can dance, and that's about it.
- 41:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 41:41SPEAKER_00: Um and then she learns about chasing the shot with a beer, um, and she sprays she's uh she decides to spray this one guy who just wants water and is waiting for Lily.
- 41:53SPEAKER_01: And she's like Well, she gets really goaded into it, doesn't she?
- 41:56SPEAKER_01: By the mean girl, the mean girl like tricks her and is like, you should do all these things that you're meant to do to this guy, and then it turns out he's the fire master.
- 42:02SPEAKER_01: He's the fire fire master.
- 42:04SPEAKER_01: So that's actually a very unkind thing to do.
- 42:06SPEAKER_00: And she sprays him with all this stuff, and then and then obviously they get fined, and they get fined$250, so she has to make it back by the end of the night, or she's gonna lose her job.
- 42:15SPEAKER_00: And O'Donnell shows up.
- 42:18SPEAKER_00: Um Kevin, his name's Kevin, isn't it?
- 42:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Kevin.
- 42:23SPEAKER_01: Also, I will say this film massively passes the backdale test.
- 42:28SPEAKER_00: That's true.
- 42:29SPEAKER_01: That's really true.
- 42:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and like in a significant way.
- 42:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 42:32SPEAKER_00: That's uh yeah, in a feminist masterpiece.
- 42:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, okay, okay.
- 42:38SPEAKER_00: Uh Kevin shows up, and then And then she gets uh she has an idea which is she's gonna auction him off to women at the bar, and she puts him up for one night only.
- 42:50SPEAKER_00: She and women can spend their n spend the night with him, I guess.
- 42:54SPEAKER_00: On a date, I guess they're going on.
- 42:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the rules the rules of that proposition not clear.
- 42:59SPEAKER_00: Speak it's like have him for one night.
- 43:03SPEAKER_01: Just like a bit in the bar, or like till 8 a.m.
- 43:08SPEAKER_00: But women go crazy for him.
- 43:09SPEAKER_00: He starts dancing all over the bar.
- 43:11SPEAKER_00: And he starts doing it.
- 43:12SPEAKER_01: He's hot, and also he's an amazing dancer.
- 43:16SPEAKER_00: I've got something to say about this.
- 43:18SPEAKER_00: I saw him in Saturday Night Fever in on the in the West End before this movie came out.
- 43:24SPEAKER_01: Oh my god, stop.
- 43:26SPEAKER_01: Oh, so he really is like a hostile theatre person.
- 43:28SPEAKER_00: And so like what seeing him doing he's doing the Saturday Night Fever dance moves on stage on the on the bar.
- 43:33SPEAKER_01: Oh, so maybe he just knows literally those moves.
- 43:36SPEAKER_01: Or it was a little Easter egg for like having people who for you specifically, people who saw him in Saturday Night Fever.
- 43:43SPEAKER_00: But uh yeah, he was really good in it from what I remember, but I was also what 10.
- 43:47SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 43:49SPEAKER_01: No, he's hot.
- 43:49SPEAKER_01: He's hot in it, and he's like, 'cause he's Australian and he's like, yeah, he's hot.
- 43:54SPEAKER_01: He's like real self made.
- 43:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 43:56SPEAKER_01: I think he's a good love interest, and he's really He is a good love interest.
- 44:00SPEAKER_01: Apart from lying at the beginning, he's like pretty nice to her all the way through.
- 44:03SPEAKER_00: Hmm.
- 44:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he's just he's he seems like a pretty decent person for the most part.
- 44:08SPEAKER_00: Um and he's like willing to help her out and everything.
- 44:11SPEAKER_00: And he's like, he's also only got interest for her as well.
- 44:14SPEAKER_00: It's not a thing of like, oh, he's he's like sneakily dating people on the side or anything like that, which isn't used to the side.
- 44:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, he's a good boy.
- 44:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 44:22SPEAKER_00: Um and then she he she s he says she owes him um four dates breakfast, lunch, and two dinners.
- 44:33SPEAKER_01: Cute, nice line, I like it.
- 44:35SPEAKER_00: I'll use it.
- 44:36SPEAKER_00: You'll use it on your on your boyfriend.
- 44:39SPEAKER_01: In the bank, yeah.
- 44:41SPEAKER_01: Fine.
- 44:41SPEAKER_01: You never know, boyfriend for now.
- 44:45SPEAKER_00: He's not in the room apparently.
- 44:46SPEAKER_01: Never let anyone feel too comfortable.
- 44:50SPEAKER_00: Um and then he asks her to go, they they like stay up the whole night, and he's got to go.
- 44:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they have a great date, it's lovely, and she plays him some music.
- 44:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's like, yeah.
- 45:01SPEAKER_00: It's nice goals.
- 45:02SPEAKER_01: And then they go to his work, which is at a fish market, and one of his Yeah, so he has this like second hustle, and I really respect that.
- 45:11SPEAKER_01: I think it's like cool.
- 45:12SPEAKER_01: He like lets her into his life straight away, he like shows her who she is.
- 45:15SPEAKER_01: He's not like it's not about him like genuinely trying to be some pretend to be someone else.
- 45:19SPEAKER_01: He's like very honest about it.
- 45:20SPEAKER_00: He's very honest about everything about who he is, yeah.
- 45:22SPEAKER_00: Except for that one scene.
- 45:24SPEAKER_00: But yeah, he's very obvious, he's very like um.
- 45:27SPEAKER_00: So they have like this sort of like work date at at the fish market, and he's getting$200 to work there a day.
- 45:36SPEAKER_00: Again, a lot of money.
- 45:38SPEAKER_01: That's the wildest part of this film.
- 45:39SPEAKER_01: But then it's also like, what is money worth in this film?
- 45:41SPEAKER_01: Because they seem to make they auction him off for 250 bucks.
- 45:45SPEAKER_01: That's true.
- 45:45SPEAKER_01: Like yeah, I think it's like what I don't know what the value of anything is, but why not?
- 45:51SPEAKER_01: I would throw some fish around for a hundred bucks.
- 45:53SPEAKER_01: What is sure?
- 45:54SPEAKER_00: It's like it's not even long, it's like a few hours.
- 45:56SPEAKER_00: It's not even much.
- 45:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 45:58SPEAKER_01: Um, and then that's a great date.
- 46:01SPEAKER_01: Someone takes you to a fish market and it's like, uh do a little bit of work and I'll give you a hundred bucks.
- 46:06SPEAKER_00: All they're doing is moving fish from one place to another as well.
- 46:08SPEAKER_00: That's it.
- 46:09SPEAKER_01: Like, yeah, very close.
- 46:10SPEAKER_01: Moving it from literally in front of them to literally in front of them.
- 46:13SPEAKER_00: He's like, I'll pick it up, hand it to you, and then you turn and hand it to the next person.
- 46:18SPEAKER_01: Cute.
- 46:19SPEAKER_00: And then obviously they at the end of the day he says to her um something about stink or does she say to him, like, do you stink of fish as a joke?
- 46:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 46:30SPEAKER_01: She said she's like, You smell right, you smell really bad, and he's like, You smell really bad, and then she's like, Well, I'm not gonna kiss you then, or she was like, I was gonna kiss you, yeah, and then she goes up to her flat and begins to run her living room bath, and then he like knocks on the door and then they kiss.
- 46:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, which is nice, and then yeah, I liked it.
- 46:49SPEAKER_01: I really I stan this couple, I believe that's what people say.
- 46:53SPEAKER_00: Sure.
- 46:54SPEAKER_00: I do I do think they are a nice couple as well.
- 46:57SPEAKER_00: I do like them together.
- 46:58SPEAKER_00: I don't have any issues with them.
- 47:00SPEAKER_00: Um, what that I usually do with like a lot of Robs.
- 47:03SPEAKER_00: I usually like oh, they don't like it.
- 47:04SPEAKER_01: I will say that there's not much character development to anyone in this film, is there?
- 47:09SPEAKER_01: It's like uh Violet wants to be a songwriter and ends up working in a bar.
- 47:15SPEAKER_01: Kevin likes Violet, like that's the whole character.
- 47:19SPEAKER_01: There's not much he owns a comic book.
- 47:20SPEAKER_01: Hey, hey, they that's he likes comic books.
- 47:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so you learn he likes comic books, and that's like his supposedly nerdy side, but like again, cut to 20 years later, that's a fairly normal thing now to have comic books.
- 47:33SPEAKER_00: Like, it wouldn't be a thing.
- 47:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's wild, isn't it?
- 47:35SPEAKER_01: Things that were meant to be crazy.
- 47:37SPEAKER_00: She's like, Oh, you're such a nerd, you're such a child, or something like that.
- 47:40SPEAKER_00: She makes us a joke to him.
- 47:41SPEAKER_00: But um, like now it would just be like, Oh, okay, fine.
- 47:45SPEAKER_00: I'm sure there are.
- 47:46SPEAKER_01: But also, it's because he had no childhood, you know what I mean?
- 47:48SPEAKER_01: It does have a deeper significance in this film.
- 47:51SPEAKER_00: Layers.
- 47:52SPEAKER_00: There's layers to this movie I didn't even think about.
- 47:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, there's a lot of trauma they really don't touch on while they're dancing on the bar.
- 48:00SPEAKER_00: It's because they cut his stuff out to get to John Goodman's scene.
- 48:05SPEAKER_01: I hope that's true.
- 48:07SPEAKER_00: Um so it comes back to the bar.
- 48:10SPEAKER_00: The bar is going absolutely crazy at this point.
- 48:13SPEAKER_00: There's so much going on there.
- 48:14SPEAKER_00: There's like a whole like navy group in there or something, and they're all having fights and grabbing the women.
- 48:23SPEAKER_00: Um, the cops show up, and there's like all this stuff going on.
- 48:27SPEAKER_00: The the uh the uh security can't stop everyone from fighting, and she gets up on on the stage and she starts singing in um what does she sing?
- 48:39SPEAKER_01: It's like I can't remember one way or another.
- 48:43SPEAKER_01: I'm an I find ja.
- 48:44SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna getcha getcha getcha.
- 48:46SPEAKER_01: The best.
- 48:47SPEAKER_01: And everyone stops stunning that everyone stops.
- 48:51SPEAKER_01: They're stealing the booze and they stop doing it because everyone is so taken by how amazing she is.
- 48:56SPEAKER_01: Well, if you'll be honest, I don't understand why, but whatever.
- 48:59SPEAKER_01: That's the conceit of the film, and I'm happy to lean in.
- 49:02SPEAKER_00: And at this point, Michael Bay shows up as a photographer and takes a photo of her.
- 49:07SPEAKER_00: Did you notice that is that who it is?
- 49:09SPEAKER_00: That's Michael Bay.
- 49:10SPEAKER_00: What?
- 49:11SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 49:12SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 49:13SPEAKER_01: What is this film a front for?
- 49:16SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 49:17SPEAKER_00: What is happening?
- 49:19SPEAKER_00: What is happening in this movie?
- 49:20SPEAKER_00: Like, what is going on?
- 49:22SPEAKER_00: Like, why is he crazy?
- 49:24SPEAKER_00: Why has he got a cameo as a photographer?
- 49:28SPEAKER_01: Bizarre.
- 49:29SPEAKER_01: Bizarre.
- 49:31SPEAKER_00: But you don't know why he's done it for a long time, at least.
- 49:33SPEAKER_00: Like, that's that's for way later in the movie.
- 49:37SPEAKER_00: You find out why.
- 49:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean I had an inkling because I just do feel like everything is so signposted in the whole film.
- 49:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean.
- 49:42SPEAKER_01: But it's like, it can't be a good thing.
- 49:45SPEAKER_01: Her dad's gonna find out.
- 49:47SPEAKER_00: Yes, of course.
- 49:48SPEAKER_01: Um but also there's no stakes to anything in this film, are there?
- 49:51SPEAKER_00: No, because even when even with the like finding out, nobody's that bothered about anything they find out.
- 49:57SPEAKER_01: And it's like you only have to go there one time and you're like, oh, this is actually a very tame bar, as like bar where women are performing go, you know what I mean?
- 50:08SPEAKER_01: They're having a sing song.
- 50:09SPEAKER_01: How much?
- 50:10SPEAKER_00: I mean the dad just happens to Yeah, the dad just happens to show up at the worst possible moment.
- 50:14SPEAKER_00: And that's why.
- 50:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 50:15SPEAKER_00: Um like she uh that's way later in the movie, anyway.
- 50:21SPEAKER_00: She sees the it cuts to like her uh doing music and she sees like the neighbour breakdancing to some music and she starts playing along.
- 50:30SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, and she's like singing along to his breakdancing.
- 50:33SPEAKER_01: I like it, yeah.
- 50:34SPEAKER_01: Great.
- 50:34SPEAKER_01: So you get She's being inspired by the sounds of the singing.
- 50:36SPEAKER_00: She mixes a new song to it, and then uh and then Kevin sets up a place for her to sing in his in it.
- 50:43SPEAKER_00: It's in his apartment, I'm assuming.
- 50:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, or it's in a vent, isn't it in that bar that he the music venge was.
- 50:49SPEAKER_00: Oh, is it in the music?
- 50:50SPEAKER_00: That makes more sense, yeah.
- 50:51SPEAKER_01: And he's like sets up all these cardboard cutouts.
- 50:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 50:55SPEAKER_00: And she starts sick uh instead of singing for him, she starts to strip for him and to show how no.
- 51:01SPEAKER_01: Kevin Smith wrote this movie and the love interest is called Kevin.
- 51:04SPEAKER_00: Kevin Smith did rewrites on it.
- 51:07SPEAKER_01: He didn't write And the love interest is called Kevin.
- 51:10SPEAKER_00: Good point.
- 51:11SPEAKER_00: Please.
- 51:12SPEAKER_00: Good point.
- 51:12SPEAKER_00: Please.
- 51:14SPEAKER_00: Kevin O'Donnell.
- 51:15SPEAKER_01: Just I don't want to be a conspiracy theorist, but Good point.
- 51:19SPEAKER_01: I'm just saying there's a connection.
- 51:21SPEAKER_01: Sorry.
- 51:21SPEAKER_01: Back to the film.
- 51:24SPEAKER_00: No, it's fair.
- 51:25SPEAKER_00: Um she strips for him to show how nervous she gets and to make him nervous.
- 51:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, she's making him feel nervous like she feels nervous when she sings, I like it, it's a move, I'm gonna use it.
- 51:37SPEAKER_01: This boyfriend or the next.
- 51:40SPEAKER_00: And he looks like he's about to have a panic attack when she's doing it.
- 51:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he does really lose his mind over it.
- 51:47SPEAKER_01: Maybe that is exciting.
- 51:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's like the first time in his workplace, maybe, you know what I mean?
- 51:52SPEAKER_00: Maybe, but he's also like he looks like a little bit of a player to the to begin with.
- 51:57SPEAKER_01: He's a bad boy, he's seen it, he's seen it, he's seen a boob before.
- 52:01SPEAKER_00: Um and then they have sex, and it's a sex scene, and it's clearly not her in the sex scene.
- 52:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 52:09SPEAKER_00: Because it's all cut from like the neck down.
- 52:13SPEAKER_01: The days when people were like genuinely worried about showing nudity on camera.
- 52:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 52:18SPEAKER_00: Every time it cuts back to her, she's got like her bra back on again, and then it cuts back.
- 52:23SPEAKER_00: Which I thought was really funny.
- 52:24SPEAKER_01: You know what?
- 52:25SPEAKER_01: It really did protect her career.
- 52:27SPEAKER_01: She's been in other, she's in a TV show, isn't she?
- 52:30SPEAKER_00: Is she?
- 52:30SPEAKER_00: I don't I can't think of like a lot.
- 52:32SPEAKER_00: I've seen her in other stuff.
- 52:33SPEAKER_01: A fun fact about her is she's a part owner of a cool bar actually called Employees Only.
- 52:38SPEAKER_01: So maybe this did inspire her.
- 52:40SPEAKER_01: Nice.
- 52:40SPEAKER_00: I wonder if you get into the bar bars.
- 52:42SPEAKER_00: I wonder what kind of bar it is.
- 52:44SPEAKER_00: If it's similar.
- 52:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I haven't been.
- 52:45SPEAKER_01: I think it's a cocktail bar, but I've heard it, I've heard it's very cool.
- 52:49SPEAKER_00: Where is it?
- 52:50SPEAKER_01: In New York, I think.
- 52:51SPEAKER_01: Oh nice.
- 52:52SPEAKER_00: I will have a look at it next time I'm there.
- 52:56unknown: Yeah.
- 52:58SPEAKER_00: Then she sings for him, and um she sings I can't remember what she sings.
- 53:04SPEAKER_00: Doesn't matter, it's one of her songs.
- 53:06SPEAKER_00: They're all like fairly.
- 53:08SPEAKER_01: They're all about love, aren't they?
- 53:09SPEAKER_01: All of them.
- 53:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 53:10SPEAKER_00: You say you like them, don't you?
- 53:12SPEAKER_00: You or are you joking?
- 53:14SPEAKER_01: Um, I I think they're all absolute bangers.
- 53:17SPEAKER_01: I think if you line them up and listen to them all like as an album, you'd be like, these are effectively the same song.
- 53:24SPEAKER_01: But so is most music.
- 53:26SPEAKER_00: So I will say they're better than the songs in burlesque.
- 53:32SPEAKER_01: Oh my god, I thought burlesque was unwatchable, so I agree.
- 53:36SPEAKER_00: Burlesque has the same song throughout the whole movie, it's deep flight, and they're trying they're supposed to be different songs.
- 53:41SPEAKER_00: Um this at least has different songs in it.
- 53:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 53:47SPEAKER_01: No, they're great.
- 53:48SPEAKER_01: I think they're great, and it's like now that I think it it's all Leanne Rhymes singing, I'm even more into it.
- 53:54SPEAKER_01: That's such a crazy fact.
- 53:55SPEAKER_00: It's so strange.
- 53:56SPEAKER_00: Um, but then there's a uh for some reason they have a baseball match just to like fill out the plot, I guess.
- 54:02SPEAKER_00: I don't know what.
- 54:03SPEAKER_01: Oh, that is the wildest thing in this whole film that they cut away in the middle of a different montage to the coyotes playing baseball against who?
- 54:13SPEAKER_01: Some older dudes?
- 54:14SPEAKER_00: It has no purpose in any in like it's a random scene, it has no purpose in anything except to maybe show that they're becoming more of a team?
- 54:22SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 54:23SPEAKER_01: I mean, the most literal metaphor for becoming more of a team.
- 54:27SPEAKER_01: Let's show them doing a team sport.
- 54:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 54:31SPEAKER_00: It's obviously some old guy writing it that's just like uh what what do women like?
- 54:36SPEAKER_01: How do we show that people are friends?
- 54:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I guess they play baseball together.
- 54:39SPEAKER_01: Do you think that was more of a scene that they cut, or do you think that was all there has to have been like some other scene they cut with those other guys?
- 54:45SPEAKER_00: I reckon there's something else with those people.
- 54:48SPEAKER_00: I bet there's like a rivalry between them or something that they cut out.
- 54:51SPEAKER_01: Guys, what wow, what if a subplot instead of John Goodman, a subplot of this film is that the coyotes the whole way through were just playing this old man baseball team, and that was the main rivalry of the film.
- 55:02SPEAKER_01: And at the end they were like, Audiences didn't like it, we gotta cut the baseball subplot.
- 55:07SPEAKER_01: So there's more room for Goodman.
- 55:10SPEAKER_00: Kevin Smith came in to rewrite, he's like, what the hell is this stuff with the gonna lose this baseball show?
- 55:15SPEAKER_01: This makes absolutely no sense.
- 55:20SPEAKER_00: We need more Kevin.
- 55:22SPEAKER_01: Hey, the important thing though is that Kevin's really hot.
- 55:27SPEAKER_00: I mean, at the time he probably looked more like John Goodman.
- 55:31SPEAKER_01: So Yeah.
- 55:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 55:33SPEAKER_00: Um but he looks yeah, he's he's fine now.
- 55:37SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 55:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he got really thin, didn't he?
- 55:39SPEAKER_01: Didn't he have a heart attack and then he got really thin?
- 55:42SPEAKER_00: Ready thin and became a stoner.
- 55:45SPEAKER_01: Became a stoner?
- 55:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 55:48SPEAKER_01: Recently?
- 55:49SPEAKER_00: In the last ten years.
- 55:52SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 55:53SPEAKER_01: I think he got thin way even more recently than that.
- 55:55SPEAKER_01: I think he got really thin like in the last year or two.
- 55:59SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 56:00unknown: Interesting.
- 56:01SPEAKER_01: I'm not a huge Kevin Smith fan, but for some reason I do know small bits of information about Kevin Smith.
- 56:06SPEAKER_00: Except for the most interesting fact about him.
- 56:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, well, wow.
- 56:10SPEAKER_01: What a fact.
- 56:12SPEAKER_00: He like I I heard at the time that around this time he was like hired to do uncredited rewrites on a lot of scripts, so I want to know what else he did.
- 56:19SPEAKER_00: That's interesting.
- 56:20SPEAKER_00: This is him.
- 56:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that is very interesting.
- 56:22SPEAKER_00: I know I'm sh I think he did stuff on um Goodwill Hunting as well.
- 56:27SPEAKER_01: It'll have been like The Life of Pets 2 or something.
- 56:29SPEAKER_01: Goodwill Hunting seems like wild.
- 56:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, cool.
- 56:33SPEAKER_01: He must be a good script editor.
- 56:36SPEAKER_00: I guess so.
- 56:38SPEAKER_00: He's probably getting paid a fortune for it as well.
- 56:41SPEAKER_01: I know that is a good gig, actually, a rewrite.
- 56:44SPEAKER_00: He is, yeah.
- 56:45SPEAKER_00: Um have you done rewrites on anything?
- 56:48SPEAKER_00: You don't have to tell me what.
- 56:49SPEAKER_01: Not yet, but I absolutely would.
- 56:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, same if anyone's listening.
- 56:53SPEAKER_00: We will do rewrites.
- 56:54SPEAKER_01: We will rewrite anything.
- 56:57SPEAKER_01: Um I'm gonna take out the baseball scene, but otherwise we're still dead.
- 57:02SPEAKER_00: Well, why would you take out the baseball scene?
- 57:04SPEAKER_00: Because Cammy strips down in this so immediately following another strip scene.
- 57:10SPEAKER_01: It is a good vehicle for a woman taking her top off.
- 57:13SPEAKER_00: And obviously, like this man can't handle seeing a woman in her underwear, so he can't pitch to her.
- 57:19unknown: Yeah.
- 57:20SPEAKER_00: So they obviously And that's how baseball works.
- 57:22SPEAKER_00: It's like, oh, a woman in her underwear will throw you off completely so much that you will mess up and lose the match, even that you are winning clearly.
- 57:32SPEAKER_01: Who knows, man?
- 57:33SPEAKER_01: These coyotes, they're just they know what they're doing.
- 57:36SPEAKER_01: They're stunners and they know their moves.
- 57:42SPEAKER_00: And then this is where Kevin gets her a gig um to perform at like an it's not it's not an open mic, it's like somewhere between it's like a sort of between sort of situation.
- 57:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's like a gig at his venue, isn't it?
- 57:54SPEAKER_01: And he promises his friend he'll give him his magazine if she can go on.
- 57:58SPEAKER_01: Magazine?
- 57:58SPEAKER_01: His comic book, his The Punisher.
- 58:01SPEAKER_00: Just okay magazine.
- 58:03SPEAKER_00: It's a copy of okay.
- 58:04SPEAKER_01: A rare okay magazine.
- 58:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he says he'll give him his magazine, he'll give him his glamour if uh if his girlfriend can play.
- 58:13SPEAKER_01: Which is the only way I've got any stage time either.
- 58:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but then she but then she doesn't turn up.
- 58:20SPEAKER_00: No, because uh well, first of all, uh there's like a lot that happens between then.
- 58:25SPEAKER_00: So like um Tyra Banks comes back for a visit for some reason, not really that important, she's just there for fun.
- 58:32SPEAKER_00: Um Yeah, why not?
- 58:33SPEAKER_01: They were like, we hired Tyra Banks, let's use the days.
- 58:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 58:37SPEAKER_00: Um then John Goodman shows up and he's upset because she's like pouring water down her shirt when he's like watch while he's like uh as he shows up and he like leaves and Johnny Knoxville's in this scene as well.
- 58:51SPEAKER_00: Don't know if you saw it.
- 58:52SPEAKER_00: What?
- 58:53SPEAKER_00: Did you not notice him?
- 58:54SPEAKER_00: He's in it quite clearly.
- 58:56SPEAKER_01: What I I what is what are any of these cameos?
- 59:00SPEAKER_01: No, I didn't watch this.
- 59:01SPEAKER_01: He's just in it.
- 59:02SPEAKER_00: He's in it, he's one of like two guys that are like watching them do it, and they're like, oh my god, oh women like one of those scenes.
- 59:09SPEAKER_01: Um that is what look, everyone's gotta work.
- 59:12SPEAKER_01: That's all I'll say.
- 59:14SPEAKER_00: I'm thinking well, I guess this is pre-his career, so I think it's pre-his career.
- 59:20SPEAKER_01: 2000.
- 59:21SPEAKER_00: He was probably like a budding actor at this point.
- 59:23SPEAKER_00: Like, I want to be in this.
- 59:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, maybe he was mates with them.
- 59:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 59:26SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 59:27SPEAKER_00: Maybe him, Michael Bay, Kevin Smith, they all just hang out together.
- 59:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, what a weird gang.
- 59:34SPEAKER_01: No, thank you.
- 59:34SPEAKER_01: Ugh.
- 59:35SPEAKER_01: They call themselves the coyotes.
- 59:37SPEAKER_01: Kevin's the hot one.
- 59:38SPEAKER_01: Oh no.
- 59:40SPEAKER_00: Ugh.
- 59:41SPEAKER_00: I wanna is there a hot one out of those three?
- 59:44SPEAKER_01: I'd um an an intro an interesting question.
- 59:50SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna say John Goodman for me.
- 59:53SPEAKER_00: I would give I'll give that.
- 59:54SPEAKER_00: I'll give you John Goodman.
- 59:56SPEAKER_00: Um and um this is the point where Lily makes her stay behind.
- 1:00:02SPEAKER_00: She has to stay to like do uh do it to work then.
- 1:00:05SPEAKER_01: She's like, Yeah, Lily's a dick, and that actor, honestly, it is so stupid the reason she has to stay.
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_01: That actor can barely do it with a straight face.
- 1:00:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:00:11SPEAKER_01: She's like, no, you have to stay, but it's like, look how busy it is.
- 1:00:15SPEAKER_00: It's like, well, it's the same as every other thing.
- 1:00:18SPEAKER_01: It's insane.
- 1:00:19SPEAKER_01: But she doesn't go, and then he loses his magazine.
- 1:00:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he loses his magazine, he gets very upset.
- 1:00:25SPEAKER_00: Um, and then he's like storms into the bar, he sees a creepy guy on the bar, like uh trying to grab her and everything, and he fights him, smashes into the record player, the jukebox, and uh and then he gets kicked out.
- 1:00:39SPEAKER_00: She storms up, she runs after him, and she's like, Oh, you got you're gonna tell me about your life, you're gonna tell me everything.
- 1:00:44SPEAKER_00: He's like, I had no home, I had no family.
- 1:00:47SPEAKER_01: He's like, I'm I'm an orphan.
- 1:00:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:00:50SPEAKER_00: You really wanna hear?
- 1:00:53SPEAKER_00: Um what did I write?
- 1:00:55SPEAKER_00: It feels oh, I wrote it feels forced.
- 1:00:58SPEAKER_00: That's it.
- 1:00:59SPEAKER_01: If are you kidding me?
- 1:01:00SPEAKER_01: It's like oh it's like seriously, Batman, isn't it?
- 1:01:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like I just I had no one I've done it all myself.
- 1:01:07SPEAKER_01: Like that's the mysterious backstory that he just like was an orphan.
- 1:01:10SPEAKER_01: Alright, fine, whatever, man.
- 1:01:12SPEAKER_01: He needed something.
- 1:01:13SPEAKER_00: So he moved to New York and then Yeah.
- 1:01:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:01:16SPEAKER_00: I feel like they could have done better with that.
- 1:01:18SPEAKER_00: Um But then she says, like, oh, he has no dreams.
- 1:01:22SPEAKER_01: Um Yeah, it's a very it's a mean thing to say, isn't it?
- 1:01:24SPEAKER_01: It's very mean of him.
- 1:01:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he's like artist, self-obsessed.
- 1:01:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but also what does he do?
- 1:01:32SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 1:01:32SPEAKER_00: I don't, it's not entirely clear.
- 1:01:34SPEAKER_01: Well, he works in a bar by night and in a fish market also by night.
- 1:01:39SPEAKER_00: That's true.
- 1:01:40SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah.
- 1:01:40SPEAKER_00: I've already forgot his job.
- 1:01:42SPEAKER_00: That's not a training.
- 1:01:42SPEAKER_00: I've already forgot he had like four jobs.
- 1:01:46SPEAKER_01: Um maybe he's doing the jobs that he likes.
- 1:01:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:01:49SPEAKER_01: He's making a lot of money, clearly.
- 1:01:53SPEAKER_01: Um how often is he doing that fish market thing?
- 1:01:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:01:58SPEAKER_00: He I mean he says something about working six days a week, so I think he's raking it in.
- 1:02:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:02:05SPEAKER_00: I'll do that for 200 a a night.
- 1:02:08SPEAKER_01: Um establish a lot of jobs we'd be at we'd be happy to do today.
- 1:02:12SPEAKER_01: And yeah, that may be very relevant under this current economy.
- 1:02:16SPEAKER_01: So we'll bear that in mind.
- 1:02:17SPEAKER_00: Have you guessed when we're recording this?
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_00: Um she gets fired, obviously, because he also also Lily at the start says like you can't bring boyfriends here and like give away that illusion.
- 1:02:31SPEAKER_00: Um and then she goes, she like decides she's gonna leave and she goes to her friend's wedding, uh, which comes out of nowhere.
- 1:02:38SPEAKER_00: Um but see her friend getting married to someone, and then she um her dad's there as well, which is nice, and that she her friend It's to remind her how crazy she is to have followed her like wacky dream when everyone else is living that nice normal lives.
- 1:02:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's true actually.
- 1:02:54SPEAKER_00: Good writing.
- 1:02:55SPEAKER_01: This is this is why it's very signposted.
- 1:03:00SPEAKER_01: It's like it's everything in this means something and yet means nothing.
- 1:03:04SPEAKER_00: You put a lot more thought into it than I am.
- 1:03:07SPEAKER_00: I'm like, this is what it is, I'm writing it down.
- 1:03:12SPEAKER_00: Um then she dances with her dad, for she's forced to by her friend, um, and he says to her, like, um this was that was the very first time I was ashamed of you.
- 1:03:24SPEAKER_00: Which is so mean.
- 1:03:26SPEAKER_00: Which is really sad.
- 1:03:28SPEAKER_00: It's really sad.
- 1:03:28SPEAKER_01: But something bad has to happen because nothing else bad happens in the whole film.
- 1:03:32SPEAKER_00: I think that's the highest point of tension in the whole film, is that um because she then she immediately goes back to her her apartment and misses Kevin's call.
- 1:03:43SPEAKER_00: Um and at that moment, and like the phone rings again, and her dad's in the hospital because a car hit him.
- 1:03:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:03:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:03:52SPEAKER_00: But but it's it's not uh it's like he's fine.
- 1:04:00SPEAKER_01: He's like Yeah, he's like a bit beat up, isn't he?
- 1:04:02SPEAKER_01: He's not gonna die in this rom com, is he?
- 1:04:04SPEAKER_01: It was like early noughties.
- 1:04:07SPEAKER_00: No, but also it's like, oh, he's been hit by a car.
- 1:04:09SPEAKER_00: Um I need to go rush to go see him.
- 1:04:12SPEAKER_00: I see him, and like, oh yeah, he's got a bit of a broken leg.
- 1:04:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he's fine.
- 1:04:16SPEAKER_01: Good enough.
- 1:04:17SPEAKER_01: Let's go on with it.
- 1:04:17SPEAKER_01: Look, it's about her singing a song, isn't it?
- 1:04:19SPEAKER_01: That's what the film's about.
- 1:04:20SPEAKER_01: Everything else is just a diversion towards her singing a song.
- 1:04:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:04:25SPEAKER_00: And then he uh did their car crash in.
- 1:04:28SPEAKER_01: Was that a bit where they didn't know?
- 1:04:30SPEAKER_00: I think I bet that's what they added in.
- 1:04:31SPEAKER_00: I bet that's what they added in.
- 1:04:32SPEAKER_01: Everyone was like, I really want to see John go in the car crash.
- 1:04:35SPEAKER_00: I have a feeling he was in like the opening scenes and that was it.
- 1:04:38SPEAKER_01: Oh, that's interesting.
- 1:04:39SPEAKER_01: And they were like, it needs a bit more pathos from him.
- 1:04:42SPEAKER_00: I bet he was in the opening scene and then the scene where he sees her in the bar and that was it.
- 1:04:46SPEAKER_01: Interesting.
- 1:04:47SPEAKER_00: Because there's a lot of stuff that doesn't make sense for it to be in.
- 1:04:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:04:54SPEAKER_00: Um, but it's like he's put some stakes in, and then he's fine.
- 1:04:59SPEAKER_00: He's fine.
- 1:05:00SPEAKER_00: Uh, she gets her tapes back, she dumps them all over the balcony.
- 1:05:04SPEAKER_00: Um then she goes to Kevin's and she sees him with another woman entering his flat, his apartment.
- 1:05:11SPEAKER_00: Um and I wrote down at this point, I bet she I bet she's a singer.
- 1:05:18SPEAKER_01: In this world, only one thing's a threat.
- 1:05:21SPEAKER_00: I thought she I thought she was gonna be a singer.
- 1:05:23SPEAKER_00: Um then so we s I don't know.
- 1:05:26SPEAKER_00: Did you remember who she was?
- 1:05:28SPEAKER_01: No.
- 1:05:28SPEAKER_00: No.
- 1:05:29SPEAKER_00: Did you did you have a thought about who she was?
- 1:05:31SPEAKER_01: Do you know what?
- 1:05:32SPEAKER_01: I can't even remember this bit of the film and I only watched it this afternoon.
- 1:05:36SPEAKER_01: Who was she?
- 1:05:37SPEAKER_00: Uh it turns out that he's moving and she's moving in.
- 1:05:41SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:05:43SPEAKER_01: Oh, it was so boring.
- 1:05:43SPEAKER_01: I honestly didn't even process it.
- 1:05:45SPEAKER_01: It was like such a fake.
- 1:05:46SPEAKER_01: Give him a bang, you know what I mean?
- 1:05:48SPEAKER_01: Put some real stakes into this guy.
- 1:05:50SPEAKER_00: Give him a bang.
- 1:05:52SPEAKER_01: Give him a give him a chance.
- 1:05:55SPEAKER_00: Have him move on from her immediately and see what happens.
- 1:05:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_01: I rewatched um Is Hitch on your list?
- 1:06:03SPEAKER_00: It's not, it's too high.
- 1:06:05SPEAKER_00: I love Hitch though.
- 1:06:07SPEAKER_01: What?
- 1:06:08SPEAKER_01: I rewatched that, but a big twist in Hitch is that he thinks she's moved on, but then it turns out that it's her brother-in-law.
- 1:06:16SPEAKER_01: She's just leaving the house with and letting him think is her boyfriend.
- 1:06:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:06:21SPEAKER_00: I like that though.
- 1:06:22SPEAKER_00: It's quite funny.
- 1:06:23SPEAKER_01: Let people just have new boyfriends.
- 1:06:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I agree.
- 1:06:27SPEAKER_00: They do it in um there is a movie that it came up in.
- 1:06:31SPEAKER_00: I can't remember.
- 1:06:32SPEAKER_00: It's come up in one of them as well, though.
- 1:06:33SPEAKER_00: Where it's just like it is a new partner.
- 1:06:36SPEAKER_00: I can't remember what though.
- 1:06:37SPEAKER_01: And then I bet everyone feels bad for that new person.
- 1:06:39SPEAKER_01: You have to make them really evil somehow.
- 1:06:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:06:42SPEAKER_00: I can't remember.
- 1:06:44SPEAKER_00: Fine.
- 1:06:45SPEAKER_00: It's definitely happened though.
- 1:06:46SPEAKER_00: Um and so like she helps her dad, and she's just like giving him like trying to make him eat healthy, trying to help him walk.
- 1:06:57SPEAKER_00: I don't know, it's like not that high stakes.
- 1:06:59SPEAKER_00: It's um and at this point she starts writing her music, which is Can't Fight the Moonlight, which it finally comes in.
- 1:07:07SPEAKER_01: And I was like, she's doing the right thing, she's caring about other people.
- 1:07:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:07:11SPEAKER_01: And then we hear the the best song.
- 1:07:13SPEAKER_00: I was like, finally we get to hear it, because I've been waiting for it.
- 1:07:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:07:18SPEAKER_00: I didn't think it was coming.
- 1:07:20SPEAKER_00: She gets she writes the song, she gets herself a new job at a at like a bar restaurant sort of thing.
- 1:07:26SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, like a boring bar.
- 1:07:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:07:28SPEAKER_00: Very like they're wearing all white and sort of very like pure and fancy.
- 1:07:33SPEAKER_00: Um Lily shows up and asks her to come back, and she's like, uh, she's like, I knew you weren't uh I know you weren't a a a permanent uh member of the bot of this and everything.
- 1:07:46SPEAKER_00: She's like, I'm not coming back.
- 1:07:47SPEAKER_00: Um and this is when she gets to go and play at Bowery Ballroom.
- 1:07:54SPEAKER_00: They she gets they want her to play at Bowery Ballroom, which is I don't know if it's a place anymore, but I think it was quite a big place.
- 1:08:03SPEAKER_01: It wasn't till recently, I don't know if it still exists.
- 1:08:05SPEAKER_00: I think it might have closed down recently, yeah.
- 1:08:07SPEAKER_01: Oh that's sad.
- 1:08:08SPEAKER_01: That was a good venue, actually.
- 1:08:11SPEAKER_00: It's a nice venue.
- 1:08:12SPEAKER_01: But and yeah, that's big and she's like in the paper.
- 1:08:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's a good point.
- 1:08:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's why is that how the her dad finds out?
- 1:08:21SPEAKER_01: I think she's just friends with her dad by then.
- 1:08:23SPEAKER_00: Oh right.
- 1:08:24SPEAKER_01: And they're all excited and they're all gonna come see her.
- 1:08:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they're all gonna go see her.
- 1:08:28SPEAKER_00: Uh this is when you find out that Kevin's moving to Chicago, and that's what he's selling like again, not important.
- 1:08:34SPEAKER_00: It doesn't um I don't know what this is.
- 1:08:40SPEAKER_00: I wrote down one, two, three.
- 1:08:41SPEAKER_00: I don't remember what that is.
- 1:08:43SPEAKER_01: Absolutely no idea.
- 1:08:44SPEAKER_00: No idea.
- 1:08:44SPEAKER_01: I was very zoned out by this point.
- 1:08:47SPEAKER_00: It's like this is the end.
- 1:08:48SPEAKER_01: Um I can't imagine that was vital to the plot.
- 1:08:51SPEAKER_01: No, no, one, two, three, and she did a song.
- 1:08:57SPEAKER_00: Uh she freezes on stage until Kevin turns the lights off and she starts singing.
- 1:09:02SPEAKER_00: And she's obviously a friend's head.
- 1:09:05SPEAKER_00: He turns all the lights off, and that which is a callback to the Also very feminist.
- 1:09:08SPEAKER_01: Here for here for like boyfriends helping their girlfriends' dreams come true.
- 1:09:12SPEAKER_01: A lot of women helping men's dreams come true.
- 1:09:14SPEAKER_01: Not always the other way.
- 1:09:15SPEAKER_00: It's nice to have it like it's nice to reverse that and have it so like it's not focused on his stuff, it's focused on her.
- 1:09:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, or it's not about like it's not like a star is born and it's like she's somehow stealing the limelight from him or whatever the blood that matters.
- 1:09:30SPEAKER_00: Um Feminist masterpiece.
- 1:09:33SPEAKER_00: It cuts the three months later at the bar and they bring Leanne Rhymes up on stage to sing the song.
- 1:09:40SPEAKER_01: She's having an album launch party in the bar.
- 1:09:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:09:44SPEAKER_00: Of course.
- 1:09:44SPEAKER_00: Like, where else would you have it then coyote ugly?
- 1:09:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:09:47SPEAKER_00: Um cool though.
- 1:09:48SPEAKER_01: That actually is cool.
- 1:09:49SPEAKER_01: I would have an album launch party there, and then they sing it together, which I now know is Leanne Rhymes duetting with Leanne Rhymes.
- 1:09:56SPEAKER_00: Very weird.
- 1:09:56SPEAKER_00: Unless that that's the only time that she sings with her voice.
- 1:09:59SPEAKER_01: Seems rogue that you'd finally let her have a go at it, but I don't know.
- 1:10:02SPEAKER_00: Very strange.
- 1:10:03SPEAKER_00: I'm interested.
- 1:10:04SPEAKER_00: Um she buys back the comic and gives it to uh Kevin, which is nice.
- 1:10:08SPEAKER_00: That's a nice little return to form.
- 1:10:10SPEAKER_00: Um and then she gets back up and she auksoms off her dad.
- 1:10:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, more John Goodman.
- 1:10:18SPEAKER_01: And then loads of women want to buy him.
- 1:10:20SPEAKER_00: They all wanna they all want to auction, they all want to buy him.
- 1:10:22SPEAKER_00: Um and he starts dancing on the stage, starts stripping, and they all tell him to put his clothes back on.
- 1:10:27SPEAKER_00: Um then she kisses Kevin, and that's the end of the movie.
- 1:10:33SPEAKER_01: It's like I watched it all over again.
- 1:10:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I suppose watching it this afternoon and then immediately going straight into discussing it is not ideal.
- 1:10:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I do feel like I cr I crammed for a test.
- 1:10:44SPEAKER_01: Did I pass the test?
- 1:10:45SPEAKER_00: You passed the test.
- 1:10:46SPEAKER_00: You remembered most of it.
- 1:10:47SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 1:10:48SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 1:10:49SPEAKER_01: Except for the any bits of plot with the Kevin dude.
- 1:10:52SPEAKER_00: But who cares?
- 1:10:54SPEAKER_01: Whatever, man, he's not a real character, let's not pretend.
- 1:10:58SPEAKER_00: So you kind of you discussed like why you love it so much, really.
- 1:11:01SPEAKER_00: Like I you kind of said that at the start of the movie.
- 1:11:04SPEAKER_00: Like, and uh So like what what do you think makes it good other than it's like fun and uh it's you talk about the feminists?
- 1:11:14SPEAKER_01: I think it like Yeah, I think it does have good, actually quite good values to it.
- 1:11:18SPEAKER_01: I think it's not a laugh a minute.
- 1:11:21SPEAKER_01: I I don't think there is a laugh in it, but I don't think it tries to be a laugh a minute though.
- 1:11:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:11:28SPEAKER_01: And it's it's not like um you know, like a lot of rom-coms though, I feel like would try to be like kind of like delightful and surprising and like something light about them, and I don't think it's doing that.
- 1:11:36SPEAKER_01: I think it's like pretty basic and on the surface and says I mean it's a film for children.
- 1:11:40SPEAKER_01: Let's let's all agree on that.
- 1:11:42SPEAKER_01: Uh kind of, but it's a you think that's a film for adults?
- 1:11:46SPEAKER_00: It's a 15.
- 1:11:49SPEAKER_01: But this is the thing that it's like 15s are not really for 15-year-olds in reality.
- 1:11:54SPEAKER_01: Do you know this fact that's like um so uh the adverts in Saturday Night Live?
- 1:12:00SPEAKER_01: I don't think this is true anymore, but all the adverts in Saturday Night Live used to be aimed at like 13, 14-year-old boys.
- 1:12:06SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 1:12:06SPEAKER_01: Because they were like the only people at home at midnight on a Saturday are 13, 14-year-old boys.
- 1:12:11SPEAKER_01: Like that's who's once true, yeah.
- 1:12:13SPEAKER_01: I think, yeah, it's like 15 films once they were on uh straight to video or like on on TV, we'll watch by 12 to 14 year olds.
- 1:12:22SPEAKER_00: That's true, yeah.
- 1:12:22SPEAKER_00: I was watching a lot of 15s around that age, so that's definitely true.
- 1:12:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like adults weren't watching 15s.
- 1:12:28SPEAKER_01: That it was like kids were watching 15s, so if it's for teen, it's for it's for tweens.
- 1:12:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah, okay.
- 1:12:34SPEAKER_01: But I think for tweens it's like the message is good, and it's like you can you don't have to be the star star, but you do have to be confident enough to to back yourself and like sell in your work, and like people should support you, and you also have to be nice to your family and like care about your family, you can't just leave your home 40 minutes away if you can think of it again.
- 1:12:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and it's like a businesswoman, and I as I said it passes the Bechtel test.
- 1:12:59SPEAKER_01: It really does.
- 1:13:00SPEAKER_01: They're really talking about that bar a lot.
- 1:13:03SPEAKER_00: That's really true.
- 1:13:06SPEAKER_00: It's a nice movie, it's a fun movie.
- 1:13:08SPEAKER_01: I think it's I think it's a really fun movie, and I was pleased to watch it again, actually.
- 1:13:13SPEAKER_01: I I enjoyed watching it.
- 1:13:14SPEAKER_01: I think he's a good, handsome love interest.
- 1:13:18SPEAKER_00: Mr.
- 1:13:18SPEAKER_01: Australian when he does his little dance on the bar, I was like, Yeah, I'm into that.
- 1:13:23SPEAKER_00: He's loving it at that point.
- 1:13:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean he's just so happy to be back in Saturday Night Mine.
- 1:13:30SPEAKER_01: Was he good in it when you saw him in it?
- 1:13:32SPEAKER_00: From what I remember, but again, I was very young, so.
- 1:13:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, fine.
- 1:13:36SPEAKER_01: Not not one of the highlights of your life.
- 1:13:38SPEAKER_00: I was probably just like mesmerized by seeing a stage show.
- 1:13:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:13:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:13:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:13:44SPEAKER_01: I wonder what he's up to now.
- 1:13:46SPEAKER_01: Um I mean, no one's doing anything right now, are they?
- 1:13:49SPEAKER_01: Particularly actually.
- 1:13:50SPEAKER_01: I have no idea.
- 1:13:50SPEAKER_01: So that answers that question.
- 1:13:52SPEAKER_00: Again, like he was kind of like I feel like they kind of tried to make him a heart throm around that time and then it just didn't happen so much.
- 1:14:00SPEAKER_00: And so now you don't really see the things.
- 1:14:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:14:03SPEAKER_00: Which is kind of sad.
- 1:14:04SPEAKER_01: So that's sad for no one talks about how that's sad for men.
- 1:14:07SPEAKER_01: Like a teen heartthrob man, and then you become an adult man.
- 1:14:10SPEAKER_01: You can't be a teen heartthrob anymore.
- 1:14:12SPEAKER_01: Kind of Hugh Grant.
- 1:14:14SPEAKER_00: Still doing things though.
- 1:14:16SPEAKER_01: I know, but not like in the same way as when he really was like the love interest.
- 1:14:20SPEAKER_01: It has eased off.
- 1:14:22SPEAKER_00: Now he's playing villain roles in Paddington.
- 1:14:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:14:25SPEAKER_01: To be honest, that's a great part of the film.
- 1:14:28SPEAKER_01: So good for him.
- 1:14:28SPEAKER_01: Maybe he is hanging in there.
- 1:14:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:14:31SPEAKER_00: Alright, cool.
- 1:14:32SPEAKER_00: So um moving on from that, uh, let's move on to the final segment, which is um, do you have a good movie or a well-reviewed movie that you consider to be a bad movie?
- 1:14:45SPEAKER_01: Um, can I talk about Joker?
- 1:14:48SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 1:14:49SPEAKER_01: Okay, so I think Joker well, this is a complex one for me with Joker because I don't necessarily think Joker is a bad film.
- 1:14:57SPEAKER_01: But I was very angered by several things about Joker.
- 1:15:03SPEAKER_01: Firstly, I don't know why, but I did not realise I was watching a prequel.
- 1:15:08SPEAKER_00: Oh, that's not where I was expecting you to go with it, but sure.
- 1:15:11SPEAKER_01: Nothing is more annoying to me than an unexpected prequel.
- 1:15:15SPEAKER_01: I don't know why.
- 1:15:16SPEAKER_01: I don't I I don't like things to be in a linear universe if I thought they were gonna be a separate thing.
- 1:15:21SPEAKER_01: And I think you see so many of these superhero films, and they're all like sometimes they want you to think they're connected, and sometimes they don't want you to think they're connected, and I really just hate that the rules of those worlds change all the time, and I have got completely disinterested in all of it.
- 1:15:34SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 1:15:35SPEAKER_01: So I went to see only went to see Joker because I thought it was set up.
- 1:15:37SPEAKER_01: People were like, um, it's gonna be amazing, it's gonna be beautiful.
- 1:15:40SPEAKER_01: And I agree, it was like aesthetically beautiful the way it was filmed.
- 1:15:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I thought it was a very troubling depiction of mental health.
- 1:15:50SPEAKER_01: Fine, not even gonna get into that.
- 1:15:52SPEAKER_01: We all agree that this is the craziest thing about Joker to me.
- 1:15:56SPEAKER_01: Where does he work?
- 1:15:59SPEAKER_01: He works for some kind of clown agency, yeah.
- 1:16:02SPEAKER_01: And I think they cover all types of clowning.
- 1:16:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he's like clowning on the street, he's a children's birthday clown, he's like doing every single type of clowning, and there's lots of clowns that work there, and they hang out in a clown locker room and they talk about clown stuff, and they can be hired and fired, and they clock in and out.
- 1:16:21SPEAKER_01: What is that?
- 1:16:24SPEAKER_00: I can't believe that's the thing that's the issue you have with his movie out of all of the issues.
- 1:16:28SPEAKER_01: It angered me so deeply that they work in I was like, oh, it's an alt it's like an alternate 80s and one where clown agencies existed.
- 1:16:38SPEAKER_00: It's very on the nose, isn't it?
- 1:16:41SPEAKER_01: Oh my god, are you kidding me?
- 1:16:42SPEAKER_01: What did you think of that film?
- 1:16:44SPEAKER_00: I don't like the movie.
- 1:16:45SPEAKER_00: I think I I agree it it looks great.
- 1:16:50SPEAKER_00: I think he's very I think he's very good in the role, but I do not like what they did with it.
- 1:16:56SPEAKER_00: I do not like the story, I don't like the way they depict mental health, like you said.
- 1:17:00SPEAKER_00: I think um it's very troubling, like the way it kind of uh almost um not promotes, but like it's it makes it makes all this kind of stuff look good.
- 1:17:18SPEAKER_00: They try and make it look good.
- 1:17:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:17:21SPEAKER_01: One thing the thing that did almost annoy me about it, I think this is why I was so mad so mad to find out that it was a prequel, even though I obviously knew it was a prequel, but was that it it did feel like it actually had quite a good story and quite a good thing to say, but then it was like annoying that it was the Joker.
- 1:17:36SPEAKER_01: Like I didn't mind the plot and like the plot escalating and him like going on that show and it like I didn't mind all that stuff, but then it's like I didn't need it to be in a comic book universe because like if you are gonna talk about bad mental health care and all this stuff, it's like oh, but it's in a comic book.
- 1:17:50SPEAKER_01: It's like, no, it's also in reality, but fine, let's just pretend it's a comic book problem.
- 1:17:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and also Although I am really, really truly sick of seeing men play the Joker.
- 1:18:00SPEAKER_01: I know, I know me too.
- 1:18:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's such an overdog character.
- 1:18:04SPEAKER_00: They should have just left it at Heath Ledger and be done with it.
- 1:18:08SPEAKER_01: Literally, the fact that people are even still talking about that Heath Ledger one is like yeah, man.
- 1:18:14SPEAKER_01: I do know what he was good in it, everyone's good in it, but they're good in it because it's like one of a really fun character to play because it's like a defensive, crazy person.
- 1:18:23SPEAKER_00: There's a lot you can do with the role, so obviously, like it's it's gonna be like a fun role to play, but at the same time, like I don't know, there's so many other characters that they could do within those universes that they could have played like all these villains and everything.
- 1:18:36SPEAKER_00: Why do you need to keep playing the Joker?
- 1:18:39unknown: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:18:39SPEAKER_01: There's so many other interesting places.
- 1:18:40SPEAKER_01: They do think it's like the serious role in that in that universe.
- 1:18:44SPEAKER_01: Although on the isn't there about to be another Batman as well?
- 1:18:46SPEAKER_01: There is, but he's he's I can't be bothered with any superhero films now.
- 1:18:49SPEAKER_00: It does look interesting.
- 1:18:51SPEAKER_00: I'm still like a little bit hesitant to s to watch it because like but at the same time, they're doing like a much more toned-down uh dark version of it where they're doing kind of um they're doing the Riddler, I think.
- 1:19:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean it's a good villain.
- 1:19:10SPEAKER_01: It's a good do you know what I really like that one with the penguin with Danny DeVito as the penguin, the Tim Burton one.
- 1:19:16SPEAKER_01: That was my vibe.
- 1:19:17SPEAKER_01: And then I liked I really like Toby Maguire as Spider-Man.
- 1:19:20SPEAKER_01: That was like really hit the right age for me.
- 1:19:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, me too.
- 1:19:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:19:24SPEAKER_00: Um Penguin is also gonna be in this one, and it's played by Colin Farrell.
- 1:19:30SPEAKER_01: Oh no, I'm not interested.
- 1:19:32SPEAKER_01: I'm not interested at all.
- 1:19:33SPEAKER_00: He looks so much.
- 1:19:34SPEAKER_01: Why would Colin Farrell be better than Danny DeVito?
- 1:19:37SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 1:19:37SPEAKER_00: He looks so different though, he's like unrecognizable.
- 1:19:39SPEAKER_00: Do you know?
- 1:19:40SPEAKER_00: Do you know Richard Kind?
- 1:19:42unknown: No.
- 1:19:43SPEAKER_01: Who's that?
- 1:19:44SPEAKER_00: It's it's just like an actor, and he looks exactly like him, and everyone thought it might be him.
- 1:19:48SPEAKER_01: Oh, oh, he was probably mad.
- 1:19:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:19:52SPEAKER_00: And everyone started calling him Richard Mean because he's see it.
- 1:19:56SPEAKER_01: Oh I'm sure I will end up seeing it, and I'll be right back.
- 1:19:59SPEAKER_00: I know I'm sure we'll see it all the time.
- 1:20:01SPEAKER_00: I'm very curious.
- 1:20:02SPEAKER_00: I need to go see Tenet though, just to see and then we can talk about it.
- 1:20:07SPEAKER_01: I've heard Let me know when you've seen it.
- 1:20:08SPEAKER_00: I've heard such mixed things, like some half the people are saying, like, oh, they love it, and half people are saying they hate it.
- 1:20:13SPEAKER_00: But that seems like every Nolan, that's every Nolan fan.
- 1:20:17SPEAKER_00: I I'm not a huge Nolan fan, and I I'll get a lot of hate for saying that, but I'm not a huge Nolan fan.
- 1:20:23SPEAKER_01: Good.
- 1:20:24SPEAKER_01: I think Inception was better.
- 1:20:26SPEAKER_01: I wasn't a fan of Interstellar, but this was like I didn't even really like Inception, to be honest.
- 1:20:34SPEAKER_01: I like an indie, preferably like a foreign language, inceptually.
- 1:20:40SPEAKER_00: What's what's your favourite movie?
- 1:20:43SPEAKER_01: Actually, do you know what?
- 1:20:44SPEAKER_01: I say that, and then I'm like, all my actual favourite films are just really stupid films.
- 1:20:50SPEAKER_01: Like, I do I do like there are lots of like interesting films out of it.
- 1:20:52SPEAKER_01: Okay, my here are my genuine, genuine favourite films in the entire world that I will watch multiple times.
- 1:20:58SPEAKER_01: Um, I like the Addams Family Values, the second one.
- 1:21:01SPEAKER_00: Ooh.
- 1:21:02SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:21:03SPEAKER_01: Where she goes to summer camp.
- 1:21:04SPEAKER_01: Don't know why, just always love that film.
- 1:21:06SPEAKER_01: Really comforted by it.
- 1:21:07SPEAKER_01: Love every character in the Addams Family.
- 1:21:10SPEAKER_01: Just what a fun movie.
- 1:21:11SPEAKER_01: And then I really, really love this film called Troop Beverly Hills.
- 1:21:15SPEAKER_00: I've heard of it, I've never seen it.
- 1:21:17SPEAKER_01: You've got to watch it.
- 1:21:18SPEAKER_01: It's great, it's so good.
- 1:21:19SPEAKER_01: It's Shelly Long, it's like they're rich and they're in Beverly Hills, and they have to like form this Girl Scout troop.
- 1:21:25SPEAKER_01: It's just like delightful.
- 1:21:26SPEAKER_01: Everything about it is so gleeful.
- 1:21:28SPEAKER_01: So I say it like fancy foreign stuff, but really I just like children's films for girls.
- 1:21:34SPEAKER_00: It's perfectly fine.
- 1:21:36SPEAKER_00: That's the whole point of this.
- 1:21:37SPEAKER_00: Like, whatever you like, it's fine to like it.
- 1:21:39SPEAKER_00: And yeah.
- 1:21:42SPEAKER_00: And uh not necessarily bad because a critic says it's bad.
- 1:21:47SPEAKER_01: I think that's a good message.
- 1:21:49SPEAKER_00: And with that, uh, do you have any uh plugs?
- 1:21:53SPEAKER_00: Any any how can we find you and anything you want uh us to watch at the moment or listen to?
