- 0:17All right, Good afternoon. Welcome to Miller and Condon on
- 0:20a Tuesday, the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 0:23It's Trent Condon and Ken Miller with you for the next two hours
- 0:26to talk sports with you. Thanks for starting your
- 0:28afternoon here with us. Wherever you're listening in the
- 0:30state of Iowa or anywhere on the I Heart app, we're glad that
- 0:34you're here. Here's what's coming up on our
- 0:36program. Our first guest is Pete Futek.
- 0:39I don't know how he finds enough hours in the day to do what he
- 0:42does over at College Football News.
- 0:44He is the chief cook and bottle washer at that site and it is
- 0:47always up to date. There's previews every single
- 0:50day, found time to take a look back at all 32 teams in the NFL
- 0:55and what he thought of their draft.
- 0:56So if you're a football fan, college football news, yes, it's
- 0:59more than college football, but it is a phenomenal resource and
- 1:03Pete will here be here with us at the bottom of the hour and
- 1:05look forward to catching up with him.
- 1:07Matt Poston's writes about the Big 12 at Heartland College
- 1:11Sports. Matt Poston's will join us to
- 1:13kick off our number 2. Take an early look at some Big
- 1:1612 football. Sprinkle in some basketball
- 1:18stuff with Poston's as well, and then Nick Nelson on the
- 1:23Minnesota Twins and the run that they are on, which is pretty
- 1:27darn good as of late. They've won eight in a row.
- 1:30But you know what? It's not quite good enough to
- 1:32have the best, longest winning streak currently.
- 1:35Those Cardinals won again. What's going on?
- 1:39Stepped up against the Phillies, got it done.
- 1:41A little iffy there at the end. Was able to see the final out.
- 1:44I was sitting next to one of assistant coaches, our daughters
- 1:47on the same rec team. He's a Cardinals fan and he was
- 1:50watching the gamecast. I'm like, well, here, let's pop
- 1:52it on right here. So we saw the final out together
- 1:54last night out at the ballpark. He's excited, I'll tell you
- 1:57that, and should be and Cardinals fans.
- 1:59So I asked him, 'cause he obviously he's following a lot
- 2:01closer than me. And I said, you know, we talked
- 2:04about him on the show yesterday. Had Brian Walton last week.
- 2:08Is there anything you can point to?
- 2:09Because no. Well, we thought it was the
- 2:12schedule and the water was going to get deeper.
- 2:14Now again, it's it's one game, right?
- 2:16But they beat the Phillies last night and good for them keep it
- 2:19going. I mean, I think it's great if it
- 2:21if it's Cubs, Cards and we looked ahead yesterday.
- 2:24The final series of the regular season just happens to match up
- 2:28those two teams at. Wrigley Field So Libertar Good
- 2:32again last night, is he? He's still only 25.
- 2:36Feels like he's been part of our life for a little longer.
- 2:38Maybe he it's just starting to click with him.
- 2:41He was a big prospect. Bar Speaking of that, we're
- 2:43going to finish a point. Well, that's just one of the
- 2:46many things that you kind of look at is things starting to
- 2:48settle in. You go for a liberator's a guy.
- 2:50That's what he was. Well, he's still only 25.
- 2:53He was a big upset guy when he came up at 22.
- 2:56And now suddenly maybe this is a guy that can be, you know, a top
- 3:00two guy in your rotation on a good playoff team.
- 3:02Those are the kind of things though that do have to start to
- 3:05happen in order to we know what they have on the back end of the
- 3:07bullpen. That's a leap.
- 3:08OK, there's a leap spot right there.
- 3:10Bullpen. The young names have been really
- 3:12good this year. If that continues a leap,
- 3:14bullpen, veteran pitching Liberator taking a step and just
- 3:18an off offense. And Cardinal fans are going to
- 3:21fill the ballpark once we get to the, you know, to the end of May
- 3:24here coming up in a couple of weeks.
- 3:25I think they're going to be. Different than what we talked
- 3:27about on the twin side of things because they've been a little
- 3:30bit starved for it, though. There's frustrations obviously
- 3:33in that fan base too, in the way that they spent recently, in the
- 3:35way that they've been constructed.
- 3:37I think that they're more willing to jump back on the
- 3:40bandwagon pretty big. I mean, how many people down
- 3:42there in Missouri, how many people across that huge
- 3:46footprint that they have? That's the summer plan.
- 3:49Yeah, it is for sure. And you know what, we weren't
- 3:52going to go this year, but they're playing pretty well.
- 3:54Let's get that weekend trip again.
- 3:56You know, you're probably right. Let's hop in the Dodge Caravan
- 3:58to make our way there. Take the Plymouth, yes, and and
- 4:01make that 345 hour drive. That's, I think, a sneaky thing
- 4:05that people forget. The touch in Plymouth.
- 4:07KMKMOX used to come all the way up.
- 4:10It was it. All the way.
- 4:12So my buddy Sean, he would sit in his driveway shooting hoops.
- 4:15Listening to it in baseball. He's a huge Cardinal fan, The
- 4:18biggest Cardinal fan. I know he would sit there and do
- 4:20that in Osage. It's a long ways to Saint Louis
- 4:22the Osage and he did that that thing, but you think about.
- 4:25Boomed. All that area of the South that
- 4:29weren't Cubs fans, that didn't have the Twins, that huge area
- 4:33of Missouri and down to. Our baseball on the radio was a
- 4:36thing, like, I mean like a major thing.
- 4:39And you couple it with the organization, what they've had,
- 4:42that organization, what they were, the Braves were terrible.
- 4:45Yes, kids. I know it's hard to believe, but
- 4:47the Braves for a long time were a awful, inept organization.
- 4:51As early as the early 90s. Absolutely.
- 4:54The year before 91, they were last place and then jumped up
- 4:57and it was the last, the last of first World Series with both of
- 5:01those teams. So all those people in the South
- 5:03Series, my God, so many of those people in the South, what were
- 5:06they, Cardle? Fans.
- 5:08Cardle, it's a huge fan base. Yeah, it is.
- 5:10And I think they're going to be willing to jump back on if this
- 5:13is more than just a blip on the radar, this 10 game win streak,
- 5:17there's more to it. Hope there is hope they can stay
- 5:19with them. I, I do.
- 5:21Let's let's talk about the Cubs. Moises Valley Staros has been
- 5:24called up. What, what's the end game with
- 5:27him? Are they calling up to showcase
- 5:29him to potentially include him in a trade because he's what
- 5:33he's a designated? Hitter.
- 5:34That's it. He's never going to catch in the
- 5:36big leagues. 1,000,000 People who follow the game, who told me
- 5:39that, who are people who would know not fans, people that, you
- 5:44know, work in baseball have told me there's it's just not good
- 5:47enough to catch in the Major League.
- 5:48Now I guess I should put this out there.
- 5:51He's only what, 2122? Yes, he's incredibly young.
- 5:54He's. Really young AAA, right?
- 5:56So I wonder if this is a call up just to give them a taste of the
- 6:02major leagues and potentially when the Cubs need to enhance
- 6:05their trade package because they're going to need a pitcher
- 6:07at some point if they stay on top of the division.
- 6:10Maybe by esteros is a name that could, you know, interest some
- 6:14other teams. I believe that the batting
- 6:16skills are too immense to do that, that that is what you're
- 6:20looking at. I think you're looking at more
- 6:22because everybody also knows that he's not a catcher.
- 6:25Is he, is he Luisa rise or maybe better because he has more
- 6:29power? Where was a rise at that age?
- 6:32Do you remember? I don't as far as power.
- 6:34A power? No, it was never there with.
- 6:36A never OK. You know, a guy that I think
- 6:39would be a good comp and position doesn't make a whole
- 6:41lot of sense, but because of the short stature, Jose Altuve.
- 6:47Jose Altuve down other side of the plate.
- 6:49But Altuve. People forget how much pop that
- 6:52guy had. Yeah, he does because but he can
- 6:54run though I'm not sure, I don't think by esteros.
- 6:57He could not, he could not, but I'm talking more of the contact
- 6:59skills and when you're you're just talking about the hitting
- 7:01skills part of it by esteros doesn't walk.
- 7:07He just hits everything. That's very much like a rise.
- 7:10But the pop I think is more pronounced and that's what L
- 7:13Tuve also developed into. To be fair, we're talking 2627
- 7:17year old L Tuve. That's kind of the comp that I
- 7:20see just as a hitter. That's it.
- 7:22Not as a runner, not as a physical specimen.
- 7:24That's what I see. Just flip it opposite sides of
- 7:26the plate with him. I think that he is too valuable
- 7:29even as only ADH. But when you win, when you have
- 7:33veteran guys on your team and guys that you want in your
- 7:37lineup, but they just can't. They're in their late 30s.
- 7:40You got them for a couple more years.
- 7:41You had a sign of that long contract to keep them.
- 7:44Their their their skills in the field aren't what they once
- 7:46were, but you still got to pay him.
- 7:48So he's you just wonder, you know, it's would you play, play
- 7:51a veteran because he's so young, He's so young. 21 years old.
- 7:57Do you see what he's listed at? What's he listed at?
- 8:005/8. 2:30. He's listed here.
- 8:04I'm looking at his minor League Baseball page at 195.
- 8:08Come on. If if he's 195, yeah I'm 170
- 8:11then Slim Moises. And I'm 63.
- 8:16He's at 195 full. Head of hair and it's not great.
- 8:19He is at 195. I like where you're thinking,
- 8:22though, the potential and a very well there might be a team that
- 8:25looks at him and says, look, we need this hitter.
- 8:27We need this kind of pop in the lineup.
- 8:28We need this kind of batting skill because he is going to be,
- 8:31I believe, an elite hitter. Kyle Schwarber is the comp that
- 8:34people use, but Schwarber is more a power hitter, power free
- 8:40swing. It's just, I think it's just
- 8:41because they're both catchers that aren't catchers.
- 8:43I think that's why the but the comps are not really close when
- 8:46it comes to those two. Yeah, I think by Esteros is more
- 8:48of a station to station hitter than than Schwarber is.
- 8:52Yes, I mean of of that 2016 core, right, that's scattered
- 8:59all around the country. Drew chimed in with this one.
- 9:02Schwarber the best of the bunch? With chunky catchers.
- 9:05Yeah, Alejandro Kirk. Alejandro Kirk for you and
- 9:08Astudio for me. Yeah, there's another one that's
- 9:11good, both of them. But neither of those guys.
- 9:13No, no. Well, Kirk, he's OK.
- 9:15He's a, he's a good solid. Yeah, yeah.
- 9:18Better than astudio who I? Think so.
- 9:20Yeah, a flash of the pan, which was incredibly fun.
- 9:22Yeah, it was. So I started to say just it just
- 9:25dawned on me when you were talking about, I don't know what
- 9:27you're talking about age. And I was watching ESPN last
- 9:30night and you know who donned it means for the first time that by
- 9:34God, this guy's getting old. And he's not old.
- 9:36He's 47. So Brian Windhorse has been on
- 9:39our TV for over 20 freaking years.
- 9:42Yes, absolutely. He covered LeBron, right?
- 9:44This is not where he got his start in high school.
- 9:46Yes, they went to the same high. School where they did, yes.
- 9:49Grew up in Akron, whatever it was.
- 9:50And when LeBron was in high school and then forcing him to
- 9:52cover up his tattoos when he played on ESPN 2, you remember
- 9:56that it was Brian Windhorse. And I mean, I don't watch a lot
- 10:00of private, but I just watched the TV last night.
- 10:03Oh my God, this guy's old. Well, he's 47 now.
- 10:06And he's been on TV for how many years?
- 10:07So LeBron was what, 2000? Early 2000s.
- 10:10So he worked for the Akron newspaper when LeBron was in
- 10:13high school? Because he does have him by 7
- 10:15years. So he was out of college,
- 10:17graduated from Kent State, did go to the same high school
- 10:20before. They weren't classic connection
- 10:22though. Yep, and that's where the
- 10:24connection started. But, and I really enjoy
- 10:26Windhorse. Yeah, he's good.
- 10:27I mean, you look back to last year, Luca in the finals with
- 10:30The Mavericks and what he was saying, yeah, he is so informed.
- 10:33But he also does it in a way that is, I think, intriguing.
- 10:35Makes you think a little bit. He's really, really good.
- 10:38He's carved out one heck. Oh my, good for him.
- 10:40Absolutely. Well, since we're on the NBA
- 10:43before we get to the games themselves, I mean, come on,
- 10:45right? Come on, the lottery the.
- 10:48Tinfoil hat doesn't even need to come out for this one, no.
- 10:52No, I hope that they're mass produced because there's so many
- 10:54people wearing these things today on the right.
- 10:57It's it's draft after draft seemingly right when you can go
- 11:03back and you can find a major trade that always comes around
- 11:07to that team that gave up a significant piece is going to
- 11:11find a way to win the draft lottery.
- 11:14And here we go again. There are too many instances
- 11:17that you look at and say. Look at the Pelicans.
- 11:20Come on. Right, CP3.
- 11:23The Pelicans, first, you have the trade that was knocked out
- 11:26by, Stern said. No, you can't trade Chris Paul
- 11:30and the team is owned currently by the NBA and they get the
- 11:33number one draft pick. That one doesn't make a whole
- 11:37lot of sense and you just go year after year.
- 11:39There's so many of them. The Magic winning it
- 11:41back-to-back years. The first year when they got
- 11:43Shaq OK, of course the next year they had a 1.5% chance of
- 11:47winning it. They got Chris Webber was a
- 11:48trader for Penny Hardaway. There are those instances that
- 11:52pop up so many times throughout the time we go back obviously to
- 11:56the first lottery, the Rosen envelope of Patrick Ewing.
- 12:00At least that's the theory that is out there.
- 12:03The Knicks getting Patrick Ewing and that was the first ever
- 12:06lottery that they ever had and they did it by envelope in that
- 12:09one. Derrick Rose going to the
- 12:11Chicago, going back home now, they had that year a 1.7% chance
- 12:17of winning the lottery. What has happened?
- 12:19Of course they get Derrick Rose. You have the Cleveland Cavaliers
- 12:23multiple times happening, including after LeBron leaves.
- 12:26There they go. Here's Kyrie.
- 12:28Then they get they they got it three out of four years now.
- 12:31Anthony Bennett was the one that they got one of those years.
- 12:34What? A boss you and LV right?
- 12:36Yes, but then the year after that they got Wiggins, who was a
- 12:39piece for them, but it was also a piece that they eventually
- 12:43traded right away in order to get the right to.
- 12:45It just, it just stinks to high heaven, right?
- 12:49It stinks to high heaven, but good for Cooper Flag.
- 12:51Go and do your thing in Dallas and we'll see where it goes
- 12:54because we're not NBA heavy until April.
- 12:58So we're starting to see more and more leaks.
- 13:00I'll let you know what, let's finish with the NBA before we
- 13:02get into the NFL. Obviously the Tatum news from
- 13:06last night is the story. I think he was having one of
- 13:11those Oh my God games, right? It seemingly was on the cusp of
- 13:15one of these games. That's going to be talked about
- 13:17for a long, long time. Would they have sealed the deal?
- 13:20Obviously a better chance to do so if he was able to complete
- 13:23the game, which we know he didn't.
- 13:25But the Knicks got to give him credit and you got to give
- 13:28Brunson a ton of credit for the way he played, in particular in
- 13:31that third quarter. Trenton, I'm not sure he missed
- 13:33a shot in the third quarter. Didn't feel like it.
- 13:35The shot making that we saw certainly during the second-half
- 13:38of that game and down the stretch before the Tatum injury
- 13:41to just the back and forth, Celtics would hit a bucket and
- 13:44then the response every single time that stretch from about
- 13:48what, maybe the seven minute mark until about the three
- 13:50minute mark, it was about as high level of basketball.
- 13:53So you're gonna find and it's not.
- 13:54There's hitting open threes. It was shot making.
- 13:57It was off the bounce. It was incredible plays great
- 14:00off the dribble and finding that open guy.
- 14:02It was beautiful basketball. And then in an instant like
- 14:05that. Just boom.
- 14:07That sinking feeling that you get.
- 14:10We watch sports. When you see that and then they
- 14:12go to the replay, you see no contact.
- 14:15It was a change of direction, the grab of the Achilles right
- 14:18away, that's what. It looked to be like most
- 14:20people, I think. Well, there's nothing official
- 14:22yet, correct? Right, the MRI will be done, but
- 14:27even if it's not in Achilles. She's she's not coming back this
- 14:30series. No, down 31.
- 14:32The Knicks are going to get it done.
- 14:33We got the Pacers on the other side and the Timberwolves do it
- 14:38again. How?
- 14:39Good would Knicks, Timberwolves be when you factor in the trade
- 14:42and the back and forth if that's indeed what we get.
- 14:45That would be tremendous. I think the NBA would be happy
- 14:47with that. They're rising star and they're.
- 14:49Gonna get those if they get the Knicks.
- 14:51Yes, and the Knicks there for the first time in a long time, a
- 14:54organization that has a won a championship in over 50 years.
- 14:58Unbelievable. The New York Knickerbock.
- 14:59What 72 was it? 72 threat, 73 seasons somewhere,
- 15:03yeah. Early 70s.
- 15:05It's been well before I was around and I'm an old man.
- 15:09That's how long back we're going.
- 15:10So that's what they're hoping for.
- 15:13The Timberwolves last night just hanging around Golden State
- 15:18played as well as they basically could in the first half, and the
- 15:21three at the Buzzers ended in the locker room that.
- 15:24Cut it to what, 2? Cut it to two 6058 hollering as
- 15:28he's walking back of course, and he got going there in the second
- 15:31quarter and then that third quarter that is as good of a
- 15:36stretch of basketball. I've watched all of it that I've
- 15:39seen from a team, though. In this NBA playoffs, that third
- 15:42quarter was absolutely. Scored by 20, right?
- 15:45Yeah, 20 something I think. From a two point deficit.
- 15:48And it wasn't just that they were hitting shots.
- 15:50That was a big part of it, but it was also what they're doing
- 15:52on the other end. Yeah.
- 15:53Jimmy Butler looked lost. Yeah, he was obviously out of
- 15:56swords. They don't have a point guard
- 15:58out there. Golden State and they got to
- 16:00work. Guy were.
- 16:00Number something out the fourth quarter 'cause I was done at
- 16:02that point after. Three, it was on, but we were
- 16:04not exactly locked in. Yeah, it.
- 16:06Seemed like it was over. I'm with you.
- 16:07It seemed like it was over at that point.
- 16:09I think the series is over now. Are they off until Sunday or do
- 16:12they have another game? They do have another game.
- 16:14They have one they will play tomorrow night, Wednesday night
- 16:17back in Minnesota and. Then go to the West if
- 16:20necessary. Yes, because the Valkyries have
- 16:24the home. Floor.
- 16:24Is it necessary? It's Minnesota sports,
- 16:30everything that my eyes have seen say.
- 16:32Minnesota. That doesn't matter.
- 16:35We see plenty of heartbreak up there in the Land of 10,000
- 16:37Lakes. I would say basketball wise,
- 16:40yeah, it's over. They're a lot better.
- 16:43Stuff's not coming back for this game.
- 16:44Nope. And they're at home.
- 16:46Yep. They have Minnesota across their
- 16:49chest. Yep.
- 16:50And that tells me that thing is that.
- 16:52Hold your horses. It's also only the second round,
- 16:55so maybe they'll be fine on this one.
- 16:57But if you can dispatch the Lakers in five, even a decimated
- 17:02Warriors team in fine. Rest up a little bit and hope
- 17:05the Nuggets and the and OKC kick the living crap out of each
- 17:08other. Who's, Oh, go ahead, you know
- 17:10you're going to ask questions. So was I, I will say I think
- 17:13they played the, I think they played the Nuggets tough.
- 17:16Yes. And the thing about them is I
- 17:18don't think the Nuggets are very deep and I'm starting to see
- 17:21some fatigue on that team. And if they find a way to get
- 17:24past OKC, I think the Minnesota Timberwolves, the well rested T
- 17:28Wolves, Oh, you hate to say it, but it sure seems like they'd be
- 17:32destined to get out of the West. Doesn't.
- 17:34It and. I really again Minnesota sports.
- 17:37Yes, the match up against OKC, it's tough, but I think we've
- 17:41seen some cracks in the armor of this OKC team.
- 17:44The people that follow the NBA during the regular season been
- 17:46telling us how great they are. You look at any of the advanced
- 17:49numbers that this was a historically great team, but you
- 17:53look at, and I know it was a quick turn around coming into
- 17:55what we saw from them over the weekend.
- 17:57They're putrid offensively and when they need a big shot, what
- 18:00can they do? And you think of the matchup and
- 18:02chat inside going up against. 72 Rudy Gobert.
- 18:05Against Gobert in there and you look at some of the matchups and
- 18:08what they can do defensively with a couple of long, athletic
- 18:11wings going out there and guarding SGA, I like the match
- 18:15up. I know there'll be a dog in it
- 18:17and that's fine, but I like the match up.
- 18:19Would they be favored over the Nuggets I.
- 18:22Think. Slight small favorite.
- 18:23I think you're right. Nuggets would have homecourt
- 18:25because they're the four or four or five.
- 18:27They're the 4C. Yeah, they're better.
- 18:29C Yep. So they would have homecourt
- 18:31there, but I would guess it'd be T wolves -120 maybe even on the
- 18:35Nuggets, something like. That it was that series last
- 18:37year. Tremendous.
- 18:38Unbelievable. It really was all right.
- 18:41The NFL schedule seems like your Bears are playing on black Black
- 18:44Friday. Did you see that I.
- 18:45Did. And it's not just that they're
- 18:48Amazon's taken over Black Friday.
- 18:49At least trying to. So what are they doing?
- 18:52They have the game, that game, but they're also putting in with
- 18:55their new NBA rights, a double header.
- 18:59So they're so. We go up against college
- 19:01football and. There.
- 19:02Yep, here it comes. Did you see what the what
- 19:05college football did like within the last couple of weeks?
- 19:08You know, in the Egg Bowl is Black Friday.
- 19:10You know, in Texas, Texas A&M is Black Friday.
- 19:12And those were always Thanksgiving.
- 19:15They've moved to Black. Friday.
- 19:16Well, not always, but a lot. A lot.
- 19:18Of the Egg Bowl, I think well, no, not always a few of them
- 19:22there weren't, but a lot of times they're both.
- 19:24But they're Black Friday now. Add to that there was a, you
- 19:28know, if a significant percentage more games last year
- 19:31on Black Friday. Seemed like there were more
- 19:33college football games last Black Friday than the years
- 19:35previous. And we had that weird Big 12 one
- 19:38that we thought maybe was going to be.
- 19:39It was like Utah, UCF. Yeah, I think you're right.
- 19:41Was that? And it was like Fox announced
- 19:43that that was going to be their Black Friday.
- 19:44That's right. And it was too disappointed to
- 19:49finish that. Utah was his best.
- 19:50I mean, that was as disappointing as maybe Oklahoma
- 19:53State. Yeah, right.
- 19:55Both of us, absolutely. Both of those teams really bad
- 19:58as far as the where they were supposed to be.
- 20:00The Vikings are going to go back-to-back games across the
- 20:04pond. That's a huge.
- 20:06Edge for them, Trent. Is it a?
- 20:08Huge edge and here's why. Those were both Rd. games in the
- 20:11in the AFC North. So you don't have to go to
- 20:14Pittsburgh, you don't have to go to Cleveland, you don't have to
- 20:16come home from the UK. So the second of which?
- 20:19Which ones first do you remember?
- 20:21I don't. Offhand, I want to say the
- 20:23Steelers. It is the Steelers.
- 20:24It's the Steelers on Sunday the 28th, so they'll stay there and
- 20:28play Cleveland the next week. So Cleveland's not going to be
- 20:31there in advance. So they'll be their body clocks
- 20:34will be adjusted. I think it's a huge benefit to
- 20:36the Vikings. Every other team in that
- 20:39division's got to play 9 road games, I want to say this year.
- 20:42So I didn't realize that they were both going to be Rd. games
- 20:46because when I saw it I just assumed.
- 20:49No, they're both roadies. They're losing both a home game
- 20:52and a road game, but so now you only have to play 7, seven games
- 20:56on the road. Pittsburgh's always difficult.
- 20:59Yeah, Cleveland. It depends on when you play
- 21:02them, but not exactly a cup of tea.
- 21:05No, the fans will still be engaged early October, one would
- 21:08assume. Right.
- 21:09And at that point, maybe it'll be the debut of Shadur, making
- 21:13him. For Dylan Gabriel, who
- 21:15apparently looked better than him this past weekend.
- 21:17But we'll see, yeah. I thought that was definitely
- 21:20eye opening though, that we have that one.
- 21:22Your Broncos are going to be involved.
- 21:24The next week. So is this more across the pond
- 21:28games than we normally? Have yes.
- 21:29OK. And there's one in Spain, for
- 21:31crying out loud. I saw that one.
- 21:33That's the is. It enough enough.
- 21:36For the NFL, for the NFL, for the NFL, that it's never enough.
- 21:39So they really want to make this global.
- 21:42Yes, there there's a demand for this at the expense of a home
- 21:46game in one of your NFL cities. Yes, there.
- 21:49Well, there's not a demand for it.
- 21:50You're looking to build that demand.
- 21:52It's what the NBA did 30 years ago.
- 21:54This is what you're trying to do.
- 21:55You're trying to make your sport global because we got our 3
- 21:58billion people here. That's basically what we are.
- 22:01You want to make it for the other 10 billion people out
- 22:05there. That's what you're trying to
- 22:06reach, and it's growing. Germany, London, England.
- 22:11Those communities are. Growing.
- 22:13They come over here. Because that's not how you grow
- 22:16the game. That's not how it happens.
- 22:18You got to go to them in order for it to happen.
- 22:20Don't like it, but it's the reality.
- 22:23And it's football at 8:30 in the morning, so there's there is
- 22:25that. Kick off the day.
- 22:27Right, you get that quadruple header.
- 22:30Now you get an 830, a noon, a 330 and a 725.
- 22:36There's worse things than that, I guess.
- 22:38Broncos, Jets, Jaguars, Rams, Colts, Falcons.
- 22:41That's the November game and then finishing up in Madrid.
- 22:46Dolphins Commanders. What's the worst game?
- 22:51So the Chiefs Chargers game on in Brazil, has it been
- 22:57announced? Because it says it needs to be
- 22:59announced tomorrow. But all the Chiefs media that
- 23:02I'm seeing is already got that like it's a done deal, really.
- 23:06It sure seems like it's Chiefs Chargers on Friday night in
- 23:10Brazil. What did we have last?
- 23:12We had Eagles and Packers last year.
- 23:13Excellent game, excellent game. And we had those questions about
- 23:16got hurt, who was going to wear green because of some weird rule
- 23:18down there. Not going to have to worry about
- 23:20that with the Chargers or the Chiefs.
- 23:23So it's going to be the. Chiefs side?
- 23:23I think so. I think so.
- 23:25I saw that Christmas night, Denver is in chief, Phil.
- 23:32That's the Christmas night game. It's starting to trickle.
- 23:36Does it seem closer now that the schedule is here, 'cause I get
- 23:40crazy, you know, I do. When the when the draft gets
- 23:42here, I think it's all downhill from here.
- 23:44But I even think it ratchets up a little bit for me when I've
- 23:46got the, the IT feels more, I don't know, tangible now that I
- 23:50can. Yeah, we know it's they're
- 23:53playing, but we don't know when or where.
- 23:56It just feels OK. We're getting there.
- 23:59We're getting. There, I got some numbers for
- 24:01you from DraftKings for some prices.
- 24:03Oh yeah, what do you got? Week 1 Cowboys at the Eagles.
- 24:06Week 1 Cowboys at the Eagles. The Eagles are favored seven and
- 24:13a. Half seven.
- 24:14Dang it, Week 13 Eagles hosting my Bears.
- 24:18Eagles hosting your. Black Friday. 7 1/2.
- 24:23It's 7 week 17, your Denver Broncos make their way to Kansas
- 24:28City. That's Christmas night.
- 24:29Ken Miller is going to drive down to Kansas City.
- 24:31He. Would never go to that.
- 24:32You know what hole? And the Chiefs in the.
- 24:34City's fine. The stadium.
- 24:36Chiefs are favored by. The Chiefs are favored by Not a
- 24:40touchdown. The odds maker realize that
- 24:45Bonex is Denver's quarterback. Their favorite's 6 1/2.
- 24:49It's. 4 1/2 You're not getting as many as you hoped.
- 24:51Don't need them. Money line baby.

- 25:37Pete Futech joins us next. College football conversation
- 25:40with Futech. Look forward to that.
- 25:42I'm at Poston's on the Big 12 kicks off hour number two.
- 25:45We'll talk to Nick Nelson about those surging Minnesota Twins.
- 25:49At 1:30. It's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 25:51Network. Hi, Miller.
- 26:07Condon, welcome back. Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 26:09Trent Condon, Ken Miller as we take you until 2O clock, the
- 26:13drive coming up at that time, Heather and Lucas 21 till 5.
- 26:16Let's talk to our friend Pete futekcollegefootballnews.com.
- 26:20He joins the program. Pete, I know I say it to you all
- 26:22the time when you come on. I don't know how you find enough
- 26:24hours in the day to do all the writing that you do.
- 26:27I found time to recap the draft for all 32 teams in your spare
- 26:32time. I guess.
- 26:33Good to talk to you. Pete, how are you?
- 26:35I'm doing fine. How you guys been?
- 26:37Doing well Did you enjoy that look back at the NFL draft?
- 26:41How much work was it I? Like it because I actually
- 26:44prefer that the draft in that world.
- 26:47Other things it's the other part of this thing too is the draft
- 26:51is such a big pile of Hoo ha. I mean it is I I I know and love
- 26:57many of these draft Knicks and draft guys.
- 26:59They don't know what they're doing.
- 27:01They're it's it's basically it's this simple when it comes to the
- 27:04draft and no one likes good. If you have to really screw up
- 27:08in the first round, you can't get a Patrick Mahomes, you can't
- 27:11get a DJ Watt. It's a dumb block.
- 27:14All you can ask for is get a guy who can start for you at a
- 27:17reasonable level for three years.
- 27:19If you draft that guy, you've hit your draft pick.
- 27:22And to do that, it's impossible to miss in the first round.
- 27:25It's hard to miss in the 2nd. And after that, just trade your
- 27:29picks because none of them work the numbers.
- 27:31Just you After the third round, you if you take out kickers and
- 27:35punch who are the best value guys get about a 10% shot of
- 27:39finding a an actual live starter after the third round.
- 27:43So whenever you say, oh, they traded away their 4th, 5th and
- 27:456th round draft picks, all right, fine.
- 27:47Maybe you got a guy who's going to play for it.
- 27:50Pete Right now, the big conversation is obviously what's
- 27:54going to happen after this year and the change in the structure
- 27:56of the College Football Playoff. Ross Dellinger had some
- 27:59reporting on it. Pete Family, couple other
- 28:01places. I don't want to say it's
- 28:02imminent, but it feels like we're getting close to it's
- 28:04going to be 16 teams. My question is this before we
- 28:07get maybe get into some nuts and bolts of it is those conference
- 28:11championship games, there's no buy involved anymore.
- 28:14So why even play them? What what is the purpose outside
- 28:18of obviously seating? What is the purpose knowing that
- 28:20everybody's going to be playing in that first round?
- 28:22Why even play the conference championship games?
- 28:25Yeah, that's going to be a struggle.
- 28:27And maybe it is proceeding. Maybe it does mean that you've
- 28:30been. And, you know, if you still have
- 28:32to maybe fight your way in because maybe if you're a Big 12
- 28:36team, you're 9:00 and 3:00 and you're not guaranteed in if you
- 28:42don't win it, you know, so for some of these teams, it's going
- 28:45to be necessary. The flip side of that, the
- 28:48Carson Beck situation where you know, you just played this FCC
- 28:52championship and you know, you won the battle the lost the war
- 28:54because you knocked out your starting quarterback for the
- 28:57College Football Playoffs. So it's it's going to lessen it,
- 29:01hopefully. I have never been a fan of the
- 29:03gimmicky conference championship.
- 29:05I would rather, you know, it's football.
- 29:08It's not, you know, even though all the guys are getting hurt in
- 29:10basketball now, you just, you don't want that many games for
- 29:14these guys. It's just too much.
- 29:18But yeah, it is inevitable. But first of all, just in a
- 29:21sheer math, think of it this way.
- 29:23Even at 16, the percentage of teams that get in the playoffs
- 29:28is far less than any other sport.
- 29:30I mean, remember, like playing games are playoff games.
- 29:33So 60% of all NBA teams make it, you know, 50% of baseball.
- 29:38You have to really screw up to not make the NHL playoffs.
- 29:42NFL is what, like 3840%? And they get in the NTA
- 29:47tournament. If you're talking 20 something
- 29:49percent, you're still talking a relatively low percentage of
- 29:53teams that are going to get in. I thought 12 is fine.
- 29:57I just think that needed to be tweaked.
- 29:59But 16 will be will be OK. Anything more than that gets
- 30:03really sort of gimmicky. And if I could have one more
- 30:06thing when they do go to 16, I hope that those additional games
- 30:09are played on campus beat, you know, whether it be early or not
- 30:12and probably would be, but preferably those games.
- 30:15I mean, the Notre game, game in the snow on against Indiana kind
- 30:18of on that Friday night, I mean, I just felt like I was watching
- 30:21something impactful when it comes to the sport.
- 30:25I'm of two minds on this. I I'm 1000% against neutral site
- 30:30games. I am a put keep the college and
- 30:34college football, keep it on campuses.
- 30:36Let the students come close. You know, be able to see it.
- 30:39That's the home field advantage. The flip side of that is I, I
- 30:44kind of coming around to the idea of you've played all year
- 30:47long and in your playoffs, you're in this goes to the NFL
- 30:50to you're playing in the playoffs and it's 50 below in,
- 30:54you know, you can't run or it's snowy or so I, I kind of think
- 30:57that that kind of lessens the playoffs to a certain extent,
- 31:01but I get it. I am I'm with you.
- 31:04I think the first round you played on college campuses just
- 31:07because you kind of have to, by the way.
- 31:10But the rule has been from the College Football playoffs that
- 31:13the team that gives the home team actually gets a choice.
- 31:18So like let's say for some, you know, God forsaken reason, you
- 31:21know, Indiana makes the College Football playoffs.
- 31:25They decide to play in the Dome in Indianapolis.
- 31:27You know, they could do that. That's where this would get bad.
- 31:30I would. But I'm with you.
- 31:31I think keep it on the campuses. That is a big part of it, the
- 31:36thought process. The four teams in the SEC, the
- 31:39four in the Big 10, they have a stranglehold on this sport right
- 31:43now and they also have the ability to do it.
- 31:46I think on the surface, all of us as sports fans don't exactly
- 31:48like it. But then you think of those
- 31:50games the way that it goes, the three seed against the six seed,
- 31:53the four against the five, and suddenly that sucked me back in.
- 31:56Pete, how about you? Yeah, the the problem with this
- 31:59is you have to everyone kind of conflates this with other
- 32:03playoffs and, you know, this is not like the NCA tournament.
- 32:07You can't just get hot from three for a couple games and all
- 32:11of a sudden be in the Elite 8. You know, you just you're not
- 32:13going to have you're never going to see Boise State or, you know,
- 32:18Indiana of this year or so make a deep run.
- 32:21They might win a game. And we thought TCU, you know,
- 32:24which was, you know, miraculously beat Michigan, but
- 32:27they're not. But then you saw Hill coming to
- 32:29breakfast in the the national championship.
- 32:31Georgia, it's my nineteen eight tournament team.
- 32:33Every time you see a central directional state beat Duke in
- 32:36the second round, that means there's an 8530 game coming very
- 32:40soon right after. So you're not going to see that
- 32:43kind of stuff happening. You're not going to see like
- 32:45stuff like the NBA where you see, oh, well, there's parity
- 32:47where the Knicks are, you know, going to play the Pacers for the
- 32:50championship. It's going to be the same like 5
- 32:53teams. If you've looked at the history
- 32:54of college football over the last 150 plus years, it was like
- 32:57Princeton and Yale and then Michigan and then pretty much
- 33:01since then and it's been basically all Alabama, Ohio
- 33:04State, you know, Notre Dame, USD, you know, the big, big
- 33:08block, you know, chain colleges that are all in there.
- 33:12They're the ones who win this. You're not going to get some
- 33:14outlier who's going to win a national championship, but it's
- 33:17just kind of fun to be in the tournament.
- 33:18And that's kind of the point. That was the point of UCFA few
- 33:21years ago. And for all these programs, they
- 33:23said, oh, we should get in Florida State a couple years.
- 33:25We just want our chance. Even though they would, they get
- 33:28just absolutely pile driven. They just want their chance to
- 33:31get embarrassed on national TV and then they have their
- 33:33closure. Pete Futech, College football
- 33:35News joins us. Pete, as you have begun your
- 33:38your previews of each of the programs, is there a team that
- 33:43either from a positive or a negative that you went into
- 33:45doing your work, thought, oh, this team's going to be really
- 33:48good and then turned out maybe they got some issues.
- 33:50Or conversely, a team that you thought, boy, it's going to be a
- 33:53long year. But the more you look into it,
- 33:55maybe you'll overlook this is. Is there anyone that fits that
- 33:59criteria? It is all about the schedule
- 34:03because now here's the thing, you might have a a tougher
- 34:07batter, Big 10 and SEC. But if you happen to miss Ohio
- 34:12State, Penn State, Michigan, or if you happen to miss Georgia
- 34:16and Texas and Tennessee or when you not everyone gets the same
- 34:21schedule. So you might have one of these
- 34:23teams like Indiana of last year, or you might, if you have, you
- 34:26know, one or two games that are nasty, OK, maybe you can lose
- 34:29those. And yet you can still beat 10:00
- 34:31and 2:00. So like really quirky team.
- 34:34Look at the Cal schedule. Al is not that good.
- 34:37They lost pretty much everybody. But if you look at the Golden
- 34:40Bear schedule, they miss everybody.
- 34:43Like they don't play Clemson, they don't play Miami, they
- 34:46don't play, I don't think, I think they missed SMU or at
- 34:48least they get them at home. But like, it's just who's got
- 34:52the nastiest schedule. They look at a team like
- 34:54mentions before, like Wisconsin, they're getting better.
- 34:57They're they're finally figured out.
- 34:58Hey, maybe we should go back to, I don't know, running the doing
- 35:02stuff that was really good. But if you look at their
- 35:04schedule, good luck thing with Oklahoma, Oklahoma is way better
- 35:09this year after what they've done in the portal.
- 35:11But you look at their schedule and you know, even with
- 35:14Oklahoma, that's going to be a fight to get the seven wins.
- 35:17So when you're trying to figure out the season, and this is kind
- 35:20of the part of the playoffs system too, and this is the only
- 35:22reason why the conference championships sort of matter
- 35:26because it does root out. The SMU is a little bit kind of
- 35:29exposes them even though they still got in.
- 35:31It really does kind of give one kind of fail safe to those teams
- 35:36that are kind of, I don't say fraud, but kind of little,
- 35:39little over their skis a little bit because of an easier
- 35:42schedule. You know those Bucky Badgers
- 35:44very well if the wheels come off again and it can with that
- 35:48schedule in October at Michigan, home for Iowa, Ohio State,
- 35:52Oregon, Jesus, that's just the month of October that they have
- 35:55completely. Go back to September.
- 35:57Don't they play Alabama? They do play Alabama and then
- 35:59they wrap up November Washington.
- 36:01They can bounce back. Indiana playoff team, Illinois
- 36:03A10 win team from a year ago and then the Gophers to wrap it up.
- 36:06Oh my God, we know the schedule is tough.
- 36:09If they go 4 and 8, is that it? Are they pulling the plug?
- 36:13You have to, I, I like I, I am a fan part of the college football
- 36:20thing and part of the sports thing for me is like, if
- 36:23something works, don't mess with, you know, I do get that
- 36:26sometimes, you know, you be careful of what you wish for
- 36:30because, you know, Nebraska, oh, well, we've got to modernize.
- 36:33We got to get the forward pass. And what did they do after that?
- 36:36You know, it all fell apart. It worked for it worked for
- 36:38Oklahoma. You know, they were able to go
- 36:40from being the ultimate wishbone team to ultimate high octane
- 36:43passing. So sometimes it clicks.
- 36:45But if you do something that works for so long, you guys, you
- 36:49guys maybe stick with it and maybe tweak it rather than blow
- 36:53it up. And they went away from and they
- 36:56acknowledge it. They went away from, you know,
- 36:57Wisconsin, they stopped doing, you know, big lineman who just
- 37:01bash people and run the ball. And it just there was a hard
- 37:05feeling of where they could have gotten because they just don't
- 37:08have the Ohio State talent that goes for everybody.
- 37:11But you should be better than that.
- 37:13And I, I do think at this point, and I come from an era where
- 37:16again, my freshman year and I close with you guys my freshman
- 37:19year in the, I remember opening up the USA TODAY and the
- 37:22staggering rankings, they're like 121 teams at the time in
- 37:27Wisconsin was 124 after like Cal Poly or something like that.
- 37:31And so I remember what it's like to be bad.
- 37:34So I'm not greedy. But yeah, the fickle thing has
- 37:36not worked so far. Does Bill Belichick on the
- 37:39sideline on Labor Day evening? I why not I, I, I honestly don't
- 37:44get this. Maybe I'm old, but like, dude,
- 37:47if you're 72, more power to you like.
- 37:49You know, go creepy, knock it out.
- 37:51I'm old too. It's just, it's, I mean, it's
- 37:53just weird. And yeah, but we're all going to
- 37:56die, and then at that point, who cares?
- 37:57So then might as well have your fun along the way.
- 38:01But here you watch me. That goes to my point before.
- 38:04Look at their schedule. Like first of all, if the Belt
- 38:08can still coach, all this stuff is just a quirky side note.
- 38:12But if you look at the North Carolina schedule, they miss
- 38:15everybody except Clemson. That is except Clemson.
- 38:18But that is A10 win schedule with mediocre team.
- 38:23Or at least at least it's a nine win schedule and they're still
- 38:26alive for the playoffs in mid November.
- 38:29And he's Belichick so he might still be good for all the blah
- 38:32blah blah. It happens in May.
- 38:33Once the ball is kicked off in August, no one's going to care.
- 38:37Petefutecollegefootballnews.com, collegefootballnews.com.
- 38:40Great work over there, Pete. Thank you.
- 38:42Appreciate you coming on as always.
- 38:44Anytime guys have a good one. Good to talk to you.
- 38:46That's Labor Day night. TCU, North Carolina.
- 38:49Yeah, he'll beat. Are you?
- 38:51You believe in the Pablo Tori stuff?
- 38:54I mean I'm we switched roles here?
- 38:57Sounds like I was all in. Yeah, I thought you thought it
- 38:59was going to be good. I told you it was going to be a
- 39:01disaster, but I didn't have this part.
- 39:02As Pete says, the schedule is pretty favorable for them.
- 39:07I mean, in a lot of ways. All right, we got to take time.
- 39:09I'll come back, finish up our #1 Miller and Condon Iowa Sports
- 39:12Radio Network. All right, final couple of
- 39:14minutes here. First hour of the program.
- 39:15Miller and Condon, Iowa Sports Radio Network Big 12
- 39:19conversation with Matt Poston's kicks.
- 39:21It's off. Hour number two.
- 39:22We'll talk about those twins with nicknelsontwinsdaily.com.
- 39:25Michael Jordan special contributor to NBCS coverage
- 39:29What? What do we expect?
- 39:30Joe Montana, I bet he's going to be terrible.
- 39:32Joe Montana was awful. He was really bad, and I think
- 39:35Michael Jordan's going to be really bad in this role.
- 39:37I'm still excited for it. I'm still going to be flipping
- 39:39on streaming because he's going to be on Peacock, right?
- 39:42So does he. Is he at the desk?
- 39:44I don't think. I think it's going to be like
- 39:46some voice over things. Remote.
- 39:48Yeah, I don't see him. I don't either.
- 39:51I'm kind. I mean, cuz Gretzky's good.
- 39:54He is who wasn't at the beginning though.
- 39:56No, he was. Took some reps.
- 39:58That's true, but obviously the best ever played that sport,
- 40:02Jordan, arguably the best ever played in the NBA, he would get
- 40:05my vote. No bite to him.
- 40:09I hope it works, I'm not confident it will.
- 40:12All right, we'll see next year. Right away we go.
- 40:16We'll be back with our #220. Four days until printing of Phil
- 40:20Steele. My conversation there with a
- 40:22Pete got me juiced up. 24 days for Phil Steele.
- 40:25Good stuff. Our 2 is next.
- 40:27I was sports radio network.
