- 0:00Speaker 1: The trade deadline is Thursday, three eastern.
- 0:02Speaker 2: Uh.
- 0:02Speaker 1: The biggest news we got right now, and it is huge.
- 0:05Speaker 1: Jimmy Butler on his way to Golden State break down
- 0:07Speaker 1: the deal for us.
- 0:09Speaker 3: How we got here was wild and crazy. Remember that
- 0:12Speaker 3: show Wild and Crazy Kids back in the day. You're
- 0:14Speaker 3: probably too young.
- 0:20Speaker 4: About.
- 0:22Speaker 3: But no Wild and Crazy day. Ultimately, Jimmy Butler ends
- 0:25Speaker 3: up in Golden State.
- 0:26Speaker 4: Uh.
- 0:27Speaker 3: You know, this was supposed to be a five team
- 0:29Speaker 3: trade package is now reported, but Toronto portion fell through.
- 0:34Speaker 3: So as of right now, it's a fourteen deal and
- 0:36Speaker 3: Kyle Anderson for the time being is going to be
- 0:38Speaker 3: sticking in Miami. We'll see how long that lasts. But ultimately, listen,
- 0:42Speaker 3: the Golden State Warriors. The way that teams described the
- 0:46Speaker 3: Warriors to me over the last few weeks was thirsty.
- 0:49Speaker 3: They were thirsty to bring in another star to pair
- 0:52Speaker 3: with Stephen Curry.
- 0:53Speaker 4: They tried everything.
- 0:55Speaker 3: They called every team about a star, specifically, I'm the
- 1:00Speaker 3: star that could come alongside help with some ball handling dullies.
- 1:03Speaker 3: They tried Lebron James, Kevin Durant, and Kevin Durant they
- 1:08Speaker 3: try him today and then it fell through. Kevin Durant.
- 1:11Speaker 3: I mean he left for a reason. He left Golden
- 1:13Speaker 3: State for a reason, he had no desire to come back,
- 1:16Speaker 3: and so they shifted their focus towards Jimmy Butler ultimately
- 1:19Speaker 3: got it done because at one point last week the
- 1:23Speaker 3: word was Jimmy Butler didn't even want to go to
- 1:25Speaker 3: Golden State. So things changed really quickly in the NBA.
- 1:28Speaker 3: That's why I love this league. But ultimately Jimmy Butler
- 1:31Speaker 3: gets where he wants. The Golden State Warriors feel that
- 1:33Speaker 3: they have a team that can contend for a title
- 1:36Speaker 3: and improve their play in the second half.
- 1:38Speaker 4: What's the fit like for you there with Jimmy. I
- 1:41Speaker 4: don't like it personally.
- 1:42Speaker 5: I just don't think it addresses where the league is
- 1:44Speaker 5: going or where the Western Conference is. You look at
- 1:46Speaker 5: the best teams in the West, the best teams in
- 1:49Speaker 5: the East, and they are big man heavy, and to me,
- 1:51Speaker 5: they're not addressing that glaring hole at the power forward
- 1:54Speaker 5: and center position.
- 1:55Speaker 4: Like they're doing a good job.
- 1:57Speaker 5: But also we talked about their age, right, like what
- 2:00Speaker 5: is this shelf life for these thirty five thirty six
- 2:03Speaker 5: year old guys who are starting to get a little
- 2:04Speaker 5: bit more beat up. What is identity of this team.
- 2:07Speaker 5: How does he fit into this? If you were to
- 2:09Speaker 5: go get you know, Kevin Durant, you would say, oh,
- 2:11Speaker 5: of course this fits. He shoots threes, he can defend
- 2:14Speaker 5: multiple positions. He shoots you know, he can create one
- 2:16Speaker 5: on one. Jimmy for the past couple of years in
- 2:19Speaker 5: Miami has been a system guy that has shined during
- 2:22Speaker 5: the playoffs, but is a reluctant three point shooter, is
- 2:26Speaker 5: a mid range guy, plays a lot slower. Having Jimmy
- 2:29Speaker 5: passed screen move cut. I want to see it. I
- 2:32Speaker 5: think it's gonna be must CTV. I just don't know
- 2:35Speaker 5: when you look at some of the better teams, how
- 2:37Speaker 5: they're gonna match up. I just don't know how it's
- 2:39Speaker 5: going to work. So that's up to Steve Kerr.
- 2:42Speaker 4: What about it?
- 2:42Speaker 1: As far as the culture is concerned, does he fit there?
- 2:46Speaker 4: Well?
- 2:46Speaker 6: I think there's some concerns.
- 2:47Speaker 2: If you look at the history of Jimmy Butler and
- 2:49Speaker 2: teams in the Jimmy Butler business, it hasn't ended well
- 2:52Speaker 2: in Chicago, Minnesota, Philadelphia, or now Miami.
- 2:55Speaker 6: So it might be over four.
- 2:57Speaker 4: I'm not trying to.
- 2:58Speaker 2: File out understating, but now that being said to Bill,
- 3:02Speaker 2: I love it for the Golden State Awards. I'm going
- 3:04Speaker 2: to take the other side for Channing, because you have
- 3:06Speaker 2: a thirty six year old Steph Curry still in his prime,
- 3:09Speaker 2: Draymond Greens in his mid thirties as well. Answer Channing's question,
- 3:12Speaker 2: I think their shelf flight is short. I think it's
- 3:14Speaker 2: two or three years. But Jimmy Butler was the best
- 3:17Speaker 2: player they could get for a reasonable cost to play
- 3:20Speaker 2: in between Steph and the back court and Draymond in
- 3:22Speaker 2: the front court, so I like it. In in addition
- 3:25Speaker 2: to the trade, they also had agreed in an extension
- 3:27Speaker 2: to your extension with Jimmy Butler, so that's the window
- 3:30Speaker 2: two or three years.
- 3:31Speaker 6: We'll see how it works out.
- 3:32Speaker 2: I still think they're a notch below the elite contenders OKC,
- 3:36Speaker 2: Cleveland and Boston, but at least now they have a chance,
- 3:39Speaker 2: and prior to the deal today, I did not think
- 3:41Speaker 2: they had a chance to contend.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Do you have any information why I didn't work out
- 3:44Speaker 1: with Phoenix, because clearly that's where he wanted to go.
- 3:46Speaker 4: That was his number one option. Bradley Beal lock it up.
- 3:50Speaker 3: Bradley one of two players with a Notrey clause. The
- 3:55Speaker 3: Phoenix Sounds knew it was going to be a difficult
- 3:57Speaker 3: pathway to try to get Jimmy Butler over there, but
- 4:01Speaker 3: Jimmy Butler was the Phoenix Suns number one target. That
- 4:04Speaker 3: was their only target. They still were optimistic this entire
- 4:08Speaker 3: time that at some point they can find a destination
- 4:13Speaker 3: that Bradley Beal will approve. I was told that Bradley
- 4:16Speaker 3: Bill wanted to be in a warm weather climate. They
- 4:20Speaker 3: tried calling some of those warm weather city, some those
- 4:22Speaker 3: warm weather teams. There wasn't mutual interest, and so that's
- 4:26Speaker 3: what made it tough. And then this today, That's why
- 4:29Speaker 3: I said, this was just so wild. And then today
- 4:33Speaker 3: when we got worried that Bradley Beal was not going
- 4:35Speaker 3: away that new trade clause. Leading up to the deadline,
- 4:38Speaker 3: we're hearing talks about potentially a swap of Kevin Durant
- 4:42Speaker 3: for Jimmy straight up, and I thought that was ludicrous
- 4:44Speaker 3: because I thought, Jimmy, they want Jimmy to play with
- 4:48Speaker 3: KD and book. And then that fell through because Miami
- 4:52Speaker 3: didn't have enough assets to give back to Phoenix. Phoenix
- 4:56Speaker 3: was not going to do a one on one swap,
- 4:58Speaker 3: and so that complicated thing, and so Phoenix Suns, they're
- 5:01Speaker 3: left with the team that is intact. But what I
- 5:04Speaker 3: was told, the Sons feel very optimistic that now with
- 5:08Speaker 3: uncertainly of some of the player's futures in the short
- 5:11Speaker 3: term being out the way, they feel like in the
- 5:13Speaker 3: second half they can go into it with improved play.
- 5:16Speaker 3: So we should see if that is the case.
- 5:18Speaker 1: So what you're saying right now, because Kevin Durant's name
- 5:20Speaker 1: has been flooring a brand, and you've talked about him
- 5:22Speaker 1: in a couple scenarios, Kevin Durant's is not going anywhere.
- 5:25Speaker 3: Doesn't look that way. Kevin Durant's not going anywhere. And
- 5:28Speaker 3: Bradley Beal for sure is not going anywhere now.
- 5:30Speaker 4: Man. Listen, he bought his house in Phoenix Sody Luca
- 5:34Speaker 4: at one point. Oh you know, he didn't have that.
- 5:36Speaker 4: No trade, that's different, that's key.
- 5:38Speaker 1: That is valuable. I mean, when you look at the
- 5:40Speaker 1: Phoenix Suns in the way they are and that big
- 5:42Speaker 1: three moving forward, is there anything they can do maybe
- 5:45Speaker 1: that small right now that could help them with that team?
- 5:49Speaker 6: Very small? I would say, yeah, nothing major.
- 5:52Speaker 2: They're gonna look at trades involving Yusuf Nurkic, maybe Grayson
- 5:55Speaker 2: Allen as well, because this is a very top heavy
- 5:58Speaker 2: team in terms of the talent with Kevin Durant, Bradley
- 6:01Speaker 2: Beal and Devin.
- 6:02Speaker 6: Booker, and the payroll as well.
- 6:04Speaker 2: They're up in the second Apron, which really limits your flexibility.
- 6:07Speaker 2: As a reminder, in the second Apron, you cannot aggregate
- 6:10Speaker 2: or combined contracts, so they can only send out players individually,
- 6:13Speaker 2: which complicated the pursuit of Jimmy Butler.
- 6:16Speaker 6: So they're going to try to upgrade around the margins.
- 6:17Speaker 6: They already did that.
- 6:19Speaker 2: I thought they made a nice move with Charlotte bringing
- 6:21Speaker 2: in Nick Nick Richards for Josha Koge in a pick,
- 6:23Speaker 2: But keep in mind this team really went all in
- 6:26Speaker 2: to get Durant and Beal to Phoenix. They traded a
- 6:28Speaker 2: bunch of draft picks and swamps, so theyre as asset
- 6:31Speaker 2: light as any team in the league. And if they're
- 6:34Speaker 2: not trading their top three guys, they don't have a
- 6:36Speaker 2: ton that other teams around the league are interested in.
- 6:38Speaker 5: I think my biggest question is what is the culture
- 6:40Speaker 5: of this team. They are not committed to the defensive end,
- 6:43Speaker 5: and I think Nick Richards was a huge steal. I
- 6:46Speaker 5: think he is exactly what they needed, but they need
- 6:49Speaker 5: an attitude adjustment, right. Everyone was so worried, who's sending
- 6:52Speaker 5: here Bradley beal if you don't want me now all
- 6:54Speaker 5: of a sudden, that's good.
- 6:55Speaker 4: I've never seen it happen.
- 6:57Speaker 5: It's like I've been trying to trade you, and if
- 6:58Speaker 5: you didn't have that no trade calall, you'd have been
- 7:00Speaker 5: in purgatory somewhere back east, right. And so for me
- 7:04Speaker 5: for badly, Bill, how do you just say, oh, don't
- 7:06Speaker 5: worry about the guys, let's keep playing. And then KD
- 7:09Speaker 5: was like, well, now I don't want to be here,
- 7:11Speaker 5: and now you're fielding calls for me. And then Booker's like, well,
- 7:14Speaker 5: this was my team and now y'all came here. We're
- 7:16Speaker 5: supposed to win. So there's a lot of things that
- 7:18Speaker 5: I think they are they talented, are they top heavy?
- 7:21Speaker 4: Do they have the opportunity to do it?
- 7:23Speaker 5: Yes, But there's a lot of what ifs, And if
- 7:25Speaker 5: you want to win a championship, you can't have five, six,
- 7:29Speaker 5: seven what ifs and try to do that over the
- 7:31Speaker 5: last twenty seven games of the season.
- 7:33Speaker 1: Yeah, it feels like it could be an uncomfortable situation,
- 7:35Speaker 1: or it could work out real great because they got
- 7:37Speaker 1: that star power.
- 7:38Speaker 4: Fascinating The Fall
