- 0:30Speaker 1: tid bits, info and the good sweet science knowledge. Louise,
- 0:34Speaker 1: what's going on.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Man, Jamison? I'm so excited about today's episode. You know,
- 0:39Speaker 2: typically we talk a lot about boxing news, we talk about,
- 0:42Speaker 2: you know, fights that happened before. But today we're going
- 0:45Speaker 2: to talk a lot about an event coming up that
- 0:46Speaker 2: I'm very excited for. It's not Cannella Crawford levels of
- 0:50Speaker 2: excitement by any means, but I have a feeling that
- 0:51Speaker 2: we're in for some really good fights. But first, actually
- 0:55Speaker 2: I want to give a shout out to our sponsored
- 0:57Speaker 2: Delightful Smoke Shop at Apparel and Tucson. Saturday actually hosted
- 1:00Speaker 2: their third annual car show, and I swung by to
- 1:02Speaker 2: check it out. It was a lot of fun. If
- 1:05Speaker 2: you'all be listening to this episode or audio only, you
- 1:07Speaker 2: gotta check us out on YouTube as well. First of all,
- 1:10Speaker 2: you gotta see this killer shirt. I capped the store.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Plus I'm also playing some videos here of in the
- 1:16Speaker 2: background of some stuff that I saw and it was great.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Just saw some They had some sexy low riders, they
- 1:23Speaker 2: had some pastry vendors outside. It was a great turnout.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Just just a really cool community event. So shout out
- 1:30Speaker 2: to Delightful Smoke Shop located at six twenty second Street
- 1:33Speaker 2: in Tucson, Arizona. They're open seven days a week, so
- 1:36Speaker 2: make sure to stop five for some goodies and hoodies.
- 1:38Speaker 2: And thank y'all so much for sponsoring the Mixed Company podcast.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Nice nice, very nice.
- 1:43Speaker 2: Yeah. So, actually, before we get into the big event
- 1:47Speaker 2: coming up, let's talk a little bit about what happened
- 1:48Speaker 2: last Saturday. I watched a top rank fight Rafael Espinosa
- 1:52Speaker 2: from Guadalajara versus Ukrainian Arnold Kagui. So that was a
- 1:58Speaker 2: top rank fight, and we talked previs episode about how
- 2:01Speaker 2: top Rank was starting to be on t B, Pluto TV,
- 2:05Speaker 2: the free stuff. So this is the first Top Rank
- 2:07Speaker 2: I actually watched Top Rank event I watched on TV.
- 2:11Speaker 2: It was good, it worked like, it was easy to find,
- 2:15Speaker 2: you know, the stream was good, no real issues. I
- 2:18Speaker 2: was kind of I'll admit I was kind of down
- 2:20Speaker 2: on top Rank for you know, going from ESPN to
- 2:24Speaker 2: just the free stuff that comes with the TV. You know.
- 2:28Speaker 2: But you know, I'll be a little bit more mellow
- 2:30Speaker 2: this week and say that, hey, you know, this is
- 2:32Speaker 2: what's gonna happen for them for the foreseeable future. I'm cool, Like,
- 2:37Speaker 2: unless you have a really old I don't know, I guess,
- 2:40Speaker 2: even even if you don't have a smart TV, as
- 2:42Speaker 2: long as a TV that has apps, they all come
- 2:44Speaker 2: with Pluto. Pluto is free, to b TV is free,
- 2:48Speaker 2: the Roku channel, even if you don't have an actual
- 2:50Speaker 2: Roku device. So top Rank is apparently going to stay
- 2:53Speaker 2: on all of those for the foreseeable future. I don't know.
- 2:55Speaker 2: I mean, what do you think if that's where we're
- 2:57Speaker 2: gonna end up for for a while.
- 3:00Speaker 1: It's your take on So it's like anything else, the
- 3:02Speaker 1: main thing is consistency, right if you're on a channel
- 3:05Speaker 1: or a platform every day. That's all who ask for.
- 3:08Speaker 1: That's all they asked for, is, Hey, I know, if
- 3:10Speaker 1: there's a fight, it's on this channel. This is where
- 3:12Speaker 1: it's at. Everything else is everything else? At this point,
- 3:15Speaker 1: we can't really be bag you know, beggers can't be
- 3:17Speaker 1: choosers at this point. So we know, hey, it's gonna
- 3:19Speaker 1: be on to me, then it's on to be That's cool.
- 3:21Speaker 1: I just think the main thing is consistency and making
- 3:24Speaker 1: sure the product is of quality.
- 3:27Speaker 2: Yeah, And what kind of made me laugh was when
- 3:30Speaker 2: this when they started broadcasting fights on TV and ed Roku.
- 3:33Speaker 2: You know, two be is the one I use, but
- 3:36Speaker 2: there are several options. They do have a how to
- 3:38Speaker 2: watch instruction menu on Instagram, and I was like, man,
- 3:41Speaker 2: that kind of bummed me out because you know, you
- 3:44Speaker 2: just turn on the TV and you used to watch
- 3:46Speaker 2: ESPN or HBO and there was fights every you know,
- 3:48Speaker 2: on Saturday nights, right nights. So having to kind of
- 3:53Speaker 2: guide your audience into where to find you is kind
- 3:56Speaker 2: of like, guys, how the mighty have fallen? You know,
- 3:59Speaker 2: you're you know, Manny Packia was top rank you know,
- 4:01Speaker 2: what the hell? Uh? But I get it, you know
- 4:04Speaker 2: it is it is different, And yeah, I I like
- 4:07Speaker 2: the idea of consistency. I don't know, you know how
- 4:10Speaker 2: profitable that is at all? I know, and I didn't
- 4:14Speaker 2: do it. Sorry, I should have done my research. But
- 4:17Speaker 2: nothing like to BTV is its own thing. It's all
- 4:19Speaker 2: owned by something else, you know what I mean, Like
- 4:21Speaker 2: they're all they all have their I bet you eventually
- 4:25Speaker 2: one of these things is down by like a Sony
- 4:27Speaker 2: or whatever, so you know, there's eventually there's deep buckets involved.
- 4:32Speaker 2: But yeah, I just kind of wish that. I just
- 4:35Speaker 2: I hope that consistency safe key with these folks.
- 4:38Speaker 1: But also it's more of the sign of the times,
- 4:40Speaker 1: right because every sport is on different platforms, not like
- 4:44Speaker 1: the old days where NFL is just on NBC and Fox.
- 4:47Speaker 1: It's on every day, it's on five or six. Hell,
- 4:50Speaker 1: they have NFL and Netflix these days, so you know,
- 4:53Speaker 1: it's just some of the times things that are training.
- 4:56Speaker 1: It's funny though, eventually we're all eventually go back to
- 4:58Speaker 1: cable because we you break down these cable bills and everything,
- 5:02Speaker 1: it's a lot of pocket that eventually we're gonna go
- 5:05Speaker 1: back to what we know, which is cable. But at
- 5:08Speaker 1: the time being right now, a lot of networks and
- 5:11Speaker 1: a lot of apps, and a lot of companies are
- 5:13Speaker 1: trying to figure out what is the niche that's gonna
- 5:16Speaker 1: be up next to boom. So that's why Live contents
- 5:19Speaker 1: always at a premium. So boxing will always have a
- 5:22Speaker 1: home where's unfamiliar where that home is. It's like that
- 5:25Speaker 1: person that always CouchSurfing. You don't know where they're staying at.
- 5:28Speaker 1: But they got a home, but you never know where
- 5:29Speaker 1: they're at. That's kind of like boxing.
- 5:32Speaker 2: That's fair, that's fair. I like that analogy. Yeah, And
- 5:36Speaker 2: you know, and this is something that I'm sure we've
- 5:38Speaker 2: all heard many times, the grampy complaints. I've I've said
- 5:41Speaker 2: it myself. When every company started, every channel started to
- 5:44Speaker 2: have his own app, it's on streaming app. You know,
- 5:46Speaker 2: it used to be Netflix, Disney got in, but then
- 5:50Speaker 2: AMC Plus and you know this, and that every other
- 5:53Speaker 2: channel had their own their own streaming thing. Well now
- 5:56Speaker 2: we're just doing cable again, but with streaming, because you
- 5:58Speaker 2: have to have a package of all of these things
- 6:01Speaker 2: to get whatever, to get everything you want to watch,
- 6:03Speaker 2: and the price is just ridiculous. And I'm hearing, you know,
- 6:06Speaker 2: from so many people that are I guess if it
- 6:09Speaker 2: was called cord cutting when you move from cable to streaming,
- 6:11Speaker 2: but now they're like legal cutting, so people are fighting
- 6:15Speaker 2: alternatives you know, online to stream everything. So yeah, I
- 6:20Speaker 2: mean it's it's kind of ridiculous that we ended up
- 6:22Speaker 2: in the same but we were in. But that's life
- 6:25Speaker 2: and that's capitalism, I guess.
- 6:28Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, and it's also some time of times. Then
- 6:30Speaker 1: we all evolve, right, I think everything evolves one way
- 6:32Speaker 1: or another, not necessarily all for good, but I just
- 6:35Speaker 1: think it's evolution of how the viewer experiences is right,
- 6:40Speaker 1: easily be paymer view back in the day, or ESPN
- 6:42Speaker 1: back in the day, or HBO back in the day.
- 6:44Speaker 1: Now it's hey, you gotta find this app because this
- 6:47Speaker 1: company invested into this, and that's.
- 6:49Speaker 2: Where we're at, right And also, to be fair to
- 6:53Speaker 2: top rank, I was angry last episode because I missed
- 6:56Speaker 2: the MICHAELA. Mayor fight that was on a Thursday night.
- 6:58Speaker 2: You know, the card started at when people were still
- 7:01Speaker 2: driving home from work. This last weekend was Saturday night.
- 7:04Speaker 2: You know, it was at the normal times. You know,
- 7:06Speaker 2: I was watching it like a PM or whatever. So
- 7:09Speaker 2: that's a little bit more in line with what with
- 7:11Speaker 2: what I'm used to with the boxing should be what
- 7:13Speaker 2: it has been. So I'm gonna be a little bit
- 7:16Speaker 2: more grace, give up a little bit more grace this week.
- 7:17Speaker 2: How's that That's fair?
- 7:21Speaker 1: All right?
- 7:21Speaker 2: So, but let's forget about what happened last week, because
- 7:24Speaker 2: if you're listening to this, the week that comes out
- 7:26Speaker 2: this Saturday, November twenty second is the next RIAT season card.
- 7:32Speaker 2: Very exciting, a lot of good fighters, and I want
- 7:35Speaker 2: to run through some of these, get some predictions, get
- 7:36Speaker 2: some thoughts on these. So first of actually let's get
- 7:39Speaker 2: this one out of the way. It's Bam Rodriguez, very
- 7:42Speaker 2: talented fighter fighting a dude named Fernando Martinez. Believe you,
- 7:46Speaker 2: Sir Margentina, I don't know for Nano marties very well.
- 7:50Speaker 2: I don't I've seen Bam Rodriguez fight. I don't know
- 7:53Speaker 2: his skills well enough to kind of see like what
- 7:55Speaker 2: got to give a prediction or they're both. Bam is
- 7:58Speaker 2: a very active fighter. The clips I saw from Fernando
- 8:01Speaker 2: Martinez very active fighter. So I'm hoping, you know, there's
- 8:04Speaker 2: a lot of action, a lot of punch is thrown
- 8:06Speaker 2: and not a lot of when both guys are very active,
- 8:08Speaker 2: but they're trying to like stay safe and keep their
- 8:11Speaker 2: distance and kind of you know, dance around. I don't
- 8:14Speaker 2: think so these guys look like they look tough. They're
- 8:17Speaker 2: like warriors. They look like they came for you know,
- 8:19Speaker 2: they came to fight and not play. So but you know,
- 8:23Speaker 2: I don't really have a lot to say about that one.
- 8:26Speaker 2: But here's what I want to get into. Abdullah Mason
- 8:29Speaker 2: from Cleveland, one of the rising stars nineteen to no.
- 8:32Speaker 2: He's gonna be fighting guy named Sam Nooks, British guy,
- 8:36Speaker 2: so Sam Noakes. I've I've looked at some clips seventeen
- 8:39Speaker 2: to no. So he's got a lot of power and
- 8:42Speaker 2: he's got a lot of precision. He's one of those
- 8:44Speaker 2: like seeking destroyer fighters who they're throwing lots of punches,
- 8:48Speaker 2: but they're catching their target every time. Okay, Now, one
- 8:53Speaker 2: thing I'll say about Sam Knok's little stiff on his feet.
- 8:56Speaker 2: I think so, I think Abdulah Mason is gonna have
- 9:00Speaker 2: to stick to footwork. He's gonna really really have to
- 9:03Speaker 2: dodge those precision punches. And you know, Abdula's kind of
- 9:06Speaker 2: proved himself to be very good on knockcats. He's got speed,
- 9:09Speaker 2: he's got knockout power, he's fast on his feet.
- 9:13Speaker 1: But I don't know.
- 9:13Speaker 2: I mean, what do you think about Abdulla Mason, where
- 9:15Speaker 2: he's at and what this card could mean for him
- 9:17Speaker 2: going forward?
- 9:18Speaker 1: He needs to win this fight. The biggest issue is
- 9:21Speaker 1: this is the biggest thing is this is a prime
- 9:23Speaker 1: time showing. All the boxing eyes are watching and it's
- 9:27Speaker 1: like anything else whatever people are watching and we're thinking
- 9:30Speaker 1: about not just this fight, with your future fights. I
- 9:33Speaker 1: think that's the big thing about boxing right now is
- 9:34Speaker 1: that yes, we're concerned about the current day fight, but
- 9:38Speaker 1: we're only trying to project, you know, fighters on what's
- 9:41Speaker 1: the next two or three steps, and that's how the
- 9:43Speaker 1: fights are made. That's how the buzz gets made. So
- 9:46Speaker 1: you want guys that have a good buzz, Guys are
- 9:49Speaker 1: on upward trajectory. You want them to put on a
- 9:51Speaker 1: good performance to where their next show is a headliner.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Those are the things you're looking for when it comes
- 9:56Speaker 1: to these type of events. So, if I'm not mistaken,
- 10:00Speaker 1: believe he's the favorite. Let me just double check here,
- 10:02Speaker 1: will Well, we were talking about it, But believe he's
- 10:07Speaker 1: the favorite at the moment. But that's the thing is
- 10:09Speaker 1: you want to have guys like that who are kind
- 10:12Speaker 1: not necessarily kind of a name for themselves, but guys
- 10:15Speaker 1: that people have an idea of and they've been following along.
- 10:18Speaker 1: Those guys are the ones you really want, you know,
- 10:23Speaker 1: putting on a show. He is a mind's five hundred favorite,
- 10:25Speaker 1: so meaning that you have put five hundred to get
- 10:27Speaker 1: one hundred back. He has to put on a show.
- 10:30Speaker 1: He needs to win. There's no excuses, there's no ifans
- 10:34Speaker 1: of budds. If he don't win, it's a colossal failure
- 10:37Speaker 1: of the whole situation. So I'll look forward to him
- 10:40Speaker 1: putting on a big show, and then again once that
- 10:43Speaker 1: takes place, we go on to who he fights next.
- 10:45Speaker 1: Those are things that get talked about.
- 10:47Speaker 2: Right and actually, you know, I'm glad you're pulling up
- 10:49Speaker 2: the odds if you don't mind as I go down
- 10:51Speaker 2: the list for other fighters, if you could have those
- 10:53Speaker 2: as well for the folks. But so here's a question
- 10:56Speaker 2: for you. He said his favorite to win, and he
- 10:59Speaker 2: has to win. What if he does win on a decision,
- 11:03Speaker 2: not a very exciting fight, not a lot of punch
- 11:05Speaker 2: is thrown. Does that mean that he's because I've talked
- 11:09Speaker 2: before about how we write out fighters really really fast.
- 11:11Speaker 2: Is everybody gonna say this guy was a sham the
- 11:14Speaker 2: whole time.
- 11:15Speaker 1: As long as you don't lose, losing is the key.
- 11:17Speaker 1: Once you lose, it's really hard. Once you will lose,
- 11:20Speaker 1: especially if you lose in light this penty fashion, it's
- 11:23Speaker 1: hard to get that back. It's very hard to get
- 11:26Speaker 1: that back. Winning ugly is still a win. Everyone is
- 11:30Speaker 1: one ugly. Every one of our favorites is one ugly
- 11:32Speaker 1: or one to fight. That was a close fifty to
- 11:34Speaker 1: fifty fight. That's how it goes. But losing, she hey,
- 11:39Speaker 1: here a thing. If you lose, if you don't get
- 11:42Speaker 1: a if you don't get a rematch, or if you
- 11:46Speaker 1: get a rematchine don't win, your career is totally different.
- 11:50Speaker 1: It's totally different.
- 11:51Speaker 2: That's fair, that's fair. And yeah, you know, my personal
- 11:54Speaker 2: opinion is, like I said, I do think we kind
- 11:55Speaker 2: of the audience kind of turns to turn on fighters
- 11:59Speaker 2: really fast if they have an off night, their first loss,
- 12:01Speaker 2: and all of a sudden, they're abum. You know, they
- 12:03Speaker 2: they they were overrated to begin with. So but you know,
- 12:08Speaker 2: I think the kids shown a lot of a lot
- 12:11Speaker 2: of promise. You know, he looks he looks good in
- 12:12Speaker 2: the ring, and he's clearly very very talented. You know,
- 12:15Speaker 2: so the skill is there. The question is we don't
- 12:18Speaker 2: just want skill. People want to show as well. You know,
- 12:20Speaker 2: they want to see knockouts, they want to see, you know,
- 12:22Speaker 2: their next big exciting fighter. I think Abdula Mason does
- 12:25Speaker 2: have the potential to be, you know, a very exciting
- 12:28Speaker 2: fighter that people tune in for. Specifically, he is kind
- 12:32Speaker 2: of early in the night. You know, actually might have
- 12:35Speaker 2: should have mentioned this first because it's in Saudi Arabia.
- 12:38Speaker 2: It's going to be like four pm or so, let's
- 12:42Speaker 2: see six pm Eastern, I think, uh is when it's
- 12:47Speaker 2: where the main cart starts. So if you're in the
- 12:50Speaker 2: East coast, you're going to be on the west coast,
- 12:52Speaker 2: are you're going to be looking at like three or
- 12:53Speaker 2: four o'clock something like that. So it's a little a
- 12:55Speaker 2: little earlier than we're used to for boxing. But it's
- 12:58Speaker 2: not you know, mourning ten as first round anything like that.
- 13:02Speaker 2: But but yeah, so Doula Mason is kind of just
- 13:06Speaker 2: getting the party started. Uh So, I think, you know,
- 13:09Speaker 2: hopefully in the future. If he was this fight, if
- 13:12Speaker 2: he looks good, you know, he's gonna be climbing later
- 13:15Speaker 2: and later in the evening. So I'm gonna go ahead
- 13:17Speaker 2: and say, I mean, I'm going I'm also going for
- 13:20Speaker 2: an Abdullah Mason win based on what I saw about
- 13:24Speaker 2: the sem Nos guy. I don't know. He's got a
- 13:26Speaker 2: lot of power, maybe not someone that uh, a type
- 13:30Speaker 2: of fighter that adults up for. My prediction is gonna
- 13:33Speaker 2: be goes the distance unanimus decision of du how's.
- 13:37Speaker 1: That That's fair? That's fair.
- 13:41Speaker 2: Okay, here's another one. Here's a big one. Devin Haney
- 13:45Speaker 2: versus Brian Norman Jr. Now, Devin Haney has kind of
- 13:50Speaker 2: his esteem has fallen, you know, over and over and
- 13:53Speaker 2: over and in my eyes personally, but also in the
- 13:56Speaker 2: boxing worlds. Brian Norman Junior, you know from Georgia twenty
- 14:00Speaker 2: eight to O. What's funny is Brian Norman is twenty
- 14:03Speaker 2: eight to no with two no contests and Devin Haney
- 14:05Speaker 2: is thirty two and oh with one no contest. So
- 14:07Speaker 2: this is the with both guys and had no contest.
- 14:10Speaker 1: On the record.
- 14:12Speaker 2: Yeah, Brian Norman Junior, power puncher. Uh, he had an
- 14:16Speaker 2: amazing knockout earlier this year being called the knockt of
- 14:20Speaker 2: the air forget against which fighter that was an Asian fighter?
- 14:25Speaker 2: Do you think that Devin Haney could take on a
- 14:27Speaker 2: guy with a lot of punching power? That's basically I
- 14:32Speaker 2: see him as kind of like another Ryan Garcia, a
- 14:34Speaker 2: bully in the ring, and Haney doesn't have a lot
- 14:37Speaker 2: of historically not a lot of power behind his punches.
- 14:40Speaker 2: Where do you see Devin Haney going after this?
- 14:43Speaker 1: So this is also so there's the thing about Haney,
- 14:45Speaker 1: like what's his mental app going into this fight? How
- 14:49Speaker 1: prepared is he going into this fight? I haven't heard
- 14:51Speaker 1: a lot about him in a while, so that's a
- 14:53Speaker 1: good thing. I guess there's been no that's been outside.
- 14:56Speaker 1: Hasn't been a lot of shangus. That's good. How from
- 15:00Speaker 1: his pops outside? I think there was a fight at
- 15:02Speaker 1: MSG him and Richard Hitchins got into it or whatever
- 15:06Speaker 1: or a few months back, but nothing major. I hope
- 15:11Speaker 1: Devon's prepared mentally and physically for the fight. I think
- 15:13Speaker 1: that's the biggest thing. Now. Devon's guy that needs to
- 15:15Speaker 1: get his name up. That's the guy that needs a
- 15:17Speaker 1: really good performance. Because the last couple of times in
- 15:19Speaker 1: the ring have not been great. So those are things
- 15:22Speaker 1: that we looked for, saying, hey, man, what you got
- 15:26Speaker 1: because eventually you gotta you gotta put up her shut up,
- 15:29Speaker 1: you know, eventually you gotta put him a good performance,
- 15:31Speaker 1: like all these skills and all these things, like, hey,
- 15:36Speaker 1: you know, we gotta see it. And for him, he's
- 15:40Speaker 1: kind of been forgotten when it comes to the guys
- 15:43Speaker 1: in his grouping, like we don't talk about him getting
- 15:46Speaker 1: big fights like that anymore. Why he needs another two performances,
- 15:50Speaker 1: get back into that conversation. We just don't think of
- 15:53Speaker 1: him automatically like that. So he's also a slight underdog
- 15:58Speaker 1: in this match, which is very pretty interesting from a
- 16:01Speaker 1: guy that a couple of years ago was one of
- 16:04Speaker 1: the faces of the division, one of the faces of
- 16:06Speaker 1: the you know his row, you know his age, range
- 16:09Speaker 1: of boxing. Still a young guy, so there's still time.
- 16:12Speaker 1: But man, uh, this is one of those where everybody's
- 16:15Speaker 1: watching kind of have to put up a shut up
- 16:17Speaker 1: or else if you don't win this one, it gets
- 16:22Speaker 1: very five PM boxing matches with him before the car shows,
- 16:27Speaker 1: before the car Yeah.
- 16:29Speaker 2: And I want to get into that, but First, do
- 16:31Speaker 2: you have the odds on this, on these two guys?
- 16:36Speaker 1: You have the betting odds on these studio he's plus
- 16:38Speaker 1: one oh five, which means he's a slight underdog.
- 16:40Speaker 2: Okay, Okay, Well here's here's what I was gonna throw
- 16:43Speaker 2: at you. I based on what I'm seeing on Bright
- 16:46Speaker 2: North performance and what Devin Haney has shown, I'm expecting
- 16:49Speaker 2: a Haney loss. To be quite honest with you, I
- 16:51Speaker 2: would bet on a Haney loss. If I was going
- 16:53Speaker 2: to bet, I would expect a Haney loss. Honestly, A
- 16:58Speaker 2: stop it you might be likely because Brian Norman Jr. He's,
- 17:01Speaker 2: like I said, kind of a Bryan Garcia type of
- 17:03Speaker 2: a bully in the ring, but definitely more of a
- 17:05Speaker 2: skilled fighter. So kind of like what I mentioned with
- 17:09Speaker 2: Sam Noaks earlier. You know a lot of fluri of punches,
- 17:12Speaker 2: but you know he's got a few more than a
- 17:14Speaker 2: few dudes with a really, really good punch that lays
- 17:16Speaker 2: him out. So I don't know if there's a stop
- 17:18Speaker 2: at your TKO. No matter what, I am predicting a
- 17:21Speaker 2: Devin Haney loss, what does that mean for him after this?
- 17:25Speaker 2: If I'm correct? You know or are we is he
- 17:28Speaker 2: just kind of like fade into obscurity or is here's
- 17:31Speaker 2: the thing. Okay, let me let me rephrase the question.
- 17:35Speaker 2: I was surprised he still got another, you know, fight
- 17:37Speaker 2: with the Saudi's after that terrible performance at Times Square
- 17:40Speaker 2: whatever that was earlier this year, like July fourth, I
- 17:42Speaker 2: think it was. I was surprised that that, you know,
- 17:47Speaker 2: he's still a name for them to put out there.
- 17:51Speaker 2: What's gonna happen after this? He's still going to get
- 17:52Speaker 2: some more shots.
- 17:53Speaker 1: Or he will be on someone's card going forward. But
- 17:58Speaker 1: it's one of those things reason fight filler not a
- 18:02Speaker 1: promoting guy, is one of those where you're filling the
- 18:04Speaker 1: card up with guys that have fought in the past
- 18:07Speaker 1: or guys that you may have heard of in the past,
- 18:09Speaker 1: but he won't be in the man attraction no more.
- 18:11Speaker 1: Or he's a tune up guy where you fight on
- 18:13Speaker 1: the way to do your big fight. Neither of those
- 18:16Speaker 1: are good things. Both are far far from grace for
- 18:19Speaker 1: a guy that used to be able to command seven figures.
- 18:22Speaker 1: If you lose this fight, I don't think you can
- 18:25Speaker 1: keep command seven figures like that anymore. He's not a
- 18:29Speaker 1: you know, he's not a guy that had a lot
- 18:32Speaker 1: of cachet that brings off general people like that. So
- 18:36Speaker 1: it's not like, Oh, people would pop up and they're
- 18:40Speaker 1: gonna go see him no matter what. I don't see that.
- 18:42Speaker 1: I don't see that kind of happening. So that with
- 18:44Speaker 1: that being said, it's kind of in a weird spot.
- 18:48Speaker 1: Is in a very weird spot where I don't know
- 18:50Speaker 1: how this works. If he loses, like he really needs
- 18:53Speaker 1: to win, only because if he wins, he's kind of
- 18:56Speaker 1: back in the mix. Right. You can put him in
- 18:58Speaker 1: conversations for fight. You can put it in conversations where
- 19:01Speaker 1: he's one flight away from a big fight again. But
- 19:04Speaker 1: he loses. Man, Hey, we forget about guys very quickly.
- 19:09Speaker 1: We forget about guy very very quickly in this situation,
- 19:12Speaker 1: and he's on the verge becoming that what Adrian Browner
- 19:17Speaker 1: was at the later stage of his career where we
- 19:19Speaker 1: just forgot about him. He ranly pop up and random fights.
- 19:22Speaker 1: That would be the HAINI course where he'd be in.
- 19:26Speaker 1: That's how bad it would be.
- 19:28Speaker 2: Okay, I just Haney's is really good at sticking and moving.
- 19:34Speaker 2: You know. There was an amazing performance he had against
- 19:36Speaker 2: kembosas twice actually, where he just kept lighting the jab,
- 19:40Speaker 2: kept coming out of going back out of range, and
- 19:43Speaker 2: is just frustrating the shit out of him. Great performance,
- 19:46Speaker 2: you know, I'm not gonna take anything away from him.
- 19:48Speaker 2: But Kembosa is also not the most talented fighter, not
- 19:51Speaker 2: the best counter watch, not the best power puncher in
- 19:53Speaker 2: the world. So I think I just don't see if
- 19:57Speaker 2: Devin Haney gets caught with a really really good power
- 20:00Speaker 2: punch from by Norman Jr. I it's I think it's uh,
- 20:04Speaker 2: maybe not lights out, but I think he's gonna end
- 20:07Speaker 2: up even if he goes the distance, those punches are
- 20:10Speaker 2: gonna look real good. He might get dropped again at
- 20:13Speaker 2: least once like he did by Garcia. And yes, I
- 20:16Speaker 2: am predicting a Devin Hainey loss on this fight.
- 20:20Speaker 1: I am predicting looked good in the fight.
- 20:25Speaker 2: Show was that composed? Is actually yeah, because that's a few.
- 20:29Speaker 1: Year she's look good in a fight where like, oh, okay,
- 20:32Speaker 1: I see what's going on, I see I see the height,
- 20:35Speaker 1: I see When did that last time happen? When does
- 20:37Speaker 1: that take place?
- 20:39Speaker 2: So I would say, yeah, twenty twenty two was the
- 20:42Speaker 2: tiny combos is the first time and they ran it
- 20:44Speaker 2: back I think the same year, so maybe it was like.
- 20:47Speaker 1: Six months later, right, it was like in December.
- 20:49Speaker 2: Yeah, because he went back to Craik Craiky Island.
- 20:54Speaker 1: Again dad had issues getting over there because his dad
- 20:56Speaker 1: has some issues.
- 20:56Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, So that was twenty twenty two. And
- 20:59Speaker 2: then when he fought Lomachenko, you know, people were in
- 21:03Speaker 2: arms that that was a gift decision. He should not
- 21:04Speaker 2: have beat Lomachenko. I actually was watching that that fight,
- 21:08Speaker 2: and I did not think that uh Haiti pulled off
- 21:10Speaker 2: the w honestly, but he was given to it by decision.
- 21:13Speaker 2: I did not think he looked that good. Then of
- 21:15Speaker 2: course it was Ryan Garcia, which I believe yes, last year,
- 21:20Speaker 2: but yeah, no, so I would say unless I'm forgetting something,
- 21:24Speaker 2: unless there's a Hainey fight that I missed in the
- 21:26Speaker 2: last few years, it was twenty twenty two since he
- 21:30Speaker 2: looked and again let's give credit. Recordis too he looked
- 21:33Speaker 2: amazing in that fight. You know, he just embarrassed Kembosas
- 21:37Speaker 2: at home and it was there was It was one
- 21:40Speaker 2: of those situations we talked about where the hush of
- 21:43Speaker 2: the crowd after you kind of see it going downhill,
- 21:46Speaker 2: you know your guy. Everybody was hyped up for their guy,
- 21:49Speaker 2: and then it's just people are just kind of checking
- 21:51Speaker 2: Twitter and seeing what's up my route, like round nine.
- 21:57Speaker 2: So yeah, twenty twenty two is what I would say.
- 22:00Speaker 1: Damn, that's going on three plus years now. That's not good,
- 22:05Speaker 1: especially for a guy that's young. Right, It's not like,
- 22:07Speaker 1: oh he's thirty five year Nah, it's supposed to be
- 22:10Speaker 1: his prime. If he's not good now, then it's kind
- 22:13Speaker 1: of over. And once you become bad at this age,
- 22:18Speaker 1: you really don't get him any more shots to get
- 22:20Speaker 1: to the top because you kind of get written off
- 22:22Speaker 1: and putting a different tier or boxer, and they really
- 22:25Speaker 1: can't build a fight around you. You're a part of
- 22:27Speaker 1: someone else's fight. You become part of the Oh yeah
- 22:31Speaker 1: he's he's undercard on someone else's card. So you come
- 22:35Speaker 1: on at five o'clock, you know, five fifteen instead of
- 22:38Speaker 1: seven fifteen. It's different.
- 22:41Speaker 2: He's only twenty seven, and you know what, I'll also
- 22:44Speaker 2: give him. Let's let's give him some grace. Let's say
- 22:46Speaker 2: that the Garcia fight was, you know, lopsided because you know,
- 22:49Speaker 2: pop for pds whatever. You Let's say like, well, Garcia
- 22:52Speaker 2: had an unfair advantage. It wasn't no contest, it was
- 22:55Speaker 2: not a loss. Blah blah blah. So if we remove
- 22:57Speaker 2: that from the equation again, we're still talking about him
- 22:59Speaker 2: beating low A Chenko and not looking good. And yeah,
- 23:02Speaker 2: it's the thing.
- 23:03Speaker 1: I think.
- 23:03Speaker 2: It's also very damaging when you take a win and
- 23:05Speaker 2: everybody thinks that you're full of shit, you know, or
- 23:07Speaker 2: that that the win was bullshit.
- 23:08Speaker 1: Well, also, the eye test, the eye test is more
- 23:11Speaker 1: important than anything in boxing. How a boxer looks in
- 23:14Speaker 1: the ring is bigger than anything because we know boxing,
- 23:18Speaker 1: we know what we're supposed to look at, was supposed
- 23:20Speaker 1: to look like, was not. So when it doesn't look right,
- 23:23Speaker 1: hey man, what's going on? Something right, He's not good?
- 23:27Speaker 1: Blah blah blah. Those are things that's happened. That's what's
- 23:30Speaker 1: taking place. Not a good situation at all, not not
- 23:34Speaker 1: It has not been good or for Devahani. There hasn't
- 23:36Speaker 1: been a whole lot of good coming at as Camp lately.
- 23:38Speaker 1: That's the issue. We have not had a lot of
- 23:41Speaker 1: success stories from him, and so until that changes, we're
- 23:45Speaker 1: kind of in a weird situation.
- 23:48Speaker 2: Yeah, and I just looked it up so uh Hayne
- 23:50Speaker 2: versus Lomachenko was twenty three and him against Ryan was
- 23:53Speaker 2: the last year doing like April of twenty four, sorry
- 23:56Speaker 2: up springing twenty four. So and then we had a
- 24:00Speaker 2: course the Times Square fight that was just uh And
- 24:04Speaker 2: I might be repeating myself that that was a bunch
- 24:07Speaker 2: of episodes ago many months ago, and my brain as
- 24:09Speaker 2: much because I'm old, but I have no I'm the
- 24:13Speaker 2: kind of guy who always gives a lot of leeweight
- 24:15Speaker 2: to fighters because they're you say, you know, they look boring,
- 24:18Speaker 2: they're not exciting.
- 24:19Speaker 1: You know.
- 24:19Speaker 2: I I know it takes a lot of technical skill,
- 24:22Speaker 2: you know, a lot of I mean just getting up
- 24:24Speaker 2: in the ring. It takes a lot of guts. And
- 24:26Speaker 2: you know, I never want to hear oh it's you know,
- 24:29Speaker 2: this person should move their feet more, move their head
- 24:31Speaker 2: from just some fat guy on the couch with some
- 24:34Speaker 2: you know, cheeto dust on his Twitter fingers. Like you know,
- 24:37Speaker 2: at the very least, you know been in the gym.
- 24:39Speaker 2: You know, you work out, you're active. I've taken boxing classes,
- 24:42Speaker 2: I've been sparring. Not to say I know anything about it,
- 24:44Speaker 2: but like I know that it takes a lot and
- 24:47Speaker 2: a lot of work. With all that said, that box
- 24:50Speaker 2: that fight was boring the ship. It sucked there was
- 24:53Speaker 2: he wasn't throwing punches. He wasn't you know, he wasn't
- 24:55Speaker 2: even moving his feet or i'm sorry, defending the punches
- 24:58Speaker 2: very well, just keeping.
- 24:59Speaker 1: His interested look like he didn't really want to be there.
- 25:03Speaker 1: And for boxers, that's a very weird place to be at.
- 25:07Speaker 1: So if you don't want to be there event, it's
- 25:09Speaker 1: not going to happen.
- 25:10Speaker 2: Yeah, And honestly, I don't even remember who who he
- 25:14Speaker 2: fought that day, but honestly it doesn't even matter. Yeah,
- 25:16Speaker 2: I think that was the biggest problem. He's just he's
- 25:18Speaker 2: he walked in there snoozy, and that's the worst you know,
- 25:22Speaker 2: any fighter who you know, if if they take like
- 25:25Speaker 2: a major l in the ring, I'll always say like
- 25:28Speaker 2: they tried their best. They wouldn't they didn't look fat
- 25:30Speaker 2: and hungover in the ring or anything like that. He
- 25:33Speaker 2: looks he looks snoozy. So I don't know. I honestly,
- 25:37Speaker 2: now I'm just so so curious to see what he's
- 25:41Speaker 2: hey and he's gonna look like in this fight, because
- 25:43Speaker 2: there was, you know, speculation by the announcements like maybe
- 25:46Speaker 2: he was a little bit gun shy after Garcia loas
- 25:49Speaker 2: you know, taking a big hit, getting getting put down,
- 25:51Speaker 2: et cetera. Now you know, I'm sure he knows the
- 25:55Speaker 2: the feedback, you know, the audience feedback of his performance.
- 25:58Speaker 2: So is he gonna step it up? Is he gonna
- 26:00Speaker 2: look good?
- 26:01Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 26:03Speaker 2: It's more of a morbid curiosity for me that fight
- 26:05Speaker 2: than really like be excited about Haiti being in the
- 26:07Speaker 2: ring again. But yeah, Brian Norman Junior, and thank you
- 26:10Speaker 2: very much to our producer, to Barry Davis. He said,
- 26:12Speaker 2: Brian Norman Junior knocked out Jin Sasaki, an Asian boxer
- 26:16Speaker 2: who was put to sleep in a spectacular fashion. So
- 26:21Speaker 2: I official prediction Brian Norman win. I'm not gonna go
- 26:25Speaker 2: so far as to say like my knockout him being
- 26:27Speaker 2: put down or go in the distance, but I definitely
- 26:31Speaker 2: expect Bright Norman to win.
- 26:34Speaker 1: All Right.
- 26:34Speaker 2: The main event for Saturday is going to be our boy,
- 26:38Speaker 2: David Benavidez from Phoenix is back to fight another British boxer,
- 26:43Speaker 2: Anthony Yard, another big power puncher, kind of similar styles,
- 26:48Speaker 2: both big dudes, both high volume punchers, fast punchers, big power,
- 26:55Speaker 2: they land big power shots. So do you have the
- 26:59Speaker 2: odds on on those days?
- 27:01Speaker 1: Not worth talking about? It's not he's mine twelve hundred,
- 27:05Speaker 1: meaning you gotta put up twelve hundred to one hundred
- 27:06Speaker 1: back is not worth today?
- 27:09Speaker 2: Yeah, so that's fair. I do think I don't think
- 27:12Speaker 2: this is gonna be easy easy work. You know, Anthony Yard,
- 27:15Speaker 2: he's a he's a big guy, he's uh twenty seven
- 27:18Speaker 2: and three. Uh. I think David Benavidez gets it's the
- 27:23Speaker 2: whole thing about big guy versus little guy thing. I
- 27:26Speaker 2: think he gets lumped in with a little guy. He's tall,
- 27:29Speaker 2: but he's leaning. But I think David Benavidez is naturally
- 27:33Speaker 2: a big dude, you know, who cuts weight. I've said
- 27:36Speaker 2: Canelo is a little dude who's beefed up, you know. Uh.
- 27:39Speaker 2: And I think that David Benavidez is. I think he
- 27:44Speaker 2: is a good choice for this weight classes. I believe
- 27:47Speaker 2: it's light heavyweight. So again he's kind of leaning toward
- 27:49Speaker 2: his big eyed roots. I think he's got the skill,
- 27:51Speaker 2: he's got the tools, he's got the talent. I think
- 27:53Speaker 2: this one won't be as easy able to walk through
- 27:55Speaker 2: for him, as long as his defense is right, So
- 28:00Speaker 2: deve Benavidez has to have great defense and he has
- 28:03Speaker 2: to have great power punches. Now, Anthony Yard, I keep
- 28:07Speaker 2: I keep calling him out of there because I'm Mexican.
- 28:10Speaker 2: That's just how I read things like that. But it's
- 28:12Speaker 2: a it's actually pronounced Anthony Yard. His one of his
- 28:16Speaker 2: big one of his more prominent losses was to Archer
- 28:20Speaker 2: better be Of and it was just that arch fantastic fighter,
- 28:25Speaker 2: big dude and caught him in between a punch and
- 28:28Speaker 2: just I think Yard never recovered from that. So it
- 28:32Speaker 2: was that's a really good fight. If you can find
- 28:33Speaker 2: those highlights, it's it's really cool just seeing Archer better
- 28:37Speaker 2: bee Of, you know, he's just just seeing him in
- 28:41Speaker 2: the ring is amazing anytime, because that man is is
- 28:44Speaker 2: a is a real deal. De Benavedas has to do
- 28:47Speaker 2: the same thing. He has to make sure he catches
- 28:49Speaker 2: Anthony Yard in between those punches. I think Benavidez can
- 28:53Speaker 2: take a lot of abuse. Anthony Yard has been catching
- 28:57Speaker 2: dudes with big with big hits that just wobble him.
- 29:01Speaker 2: Just kind of sees blood in the water that he
- 29:03Speaker 2: takes advantage. I think Benavidez can isn't gonna be rocked
- 29:07Speaker 2: as easily. So I want to see where you think
- 29:09Speaker 2: that our boy David Benavitez is now for this fight.
- 29:13Speaker 2: And then just general in context in the world of boxing,
- 29:16Speaker 2: is you know, one of the rising stars and I
- 29:18Speaker 2: think the future face of Mexican boxing.
- 29:22Speaker 1: Yeah. And also here's the thing that you gotta understand too,
- 29:25Speaker 1: when it comes to Bernavidez, he's another guy where we're
- 29:28Speaker 1: looking for his next fight. We're looking to see who
- 29:31Speaker 1: because he's a He's a guy where not necessarily a
- 29:34Speaker 1: mega fight, but it's a fight where it's like, oh,
- 29:37Speaker 1: this is a thing, like this is a the casual
- 29:41Speaker 1: sporting fan. If you match him up correctly, we'll be
- 29:43Speaker 1: able to tune in and be like, oh this guy, Okay,
- 29:46Speaker 1: that's the thing. So we're not necessarily vocal on this one.
- 29:49Speaker 1: He's gonna win on Saturday. What's gonnappen in twenty six
- 29:53Speaker 1: and beyond? Is the thing with him. That's where we're at.
- 29:58Speaker 1: That's where we're kind of focused on going forward is
- 30:01Speaker 1: with him. So that's where we're all interested in because
- 30:05Speaker 1: hey man, so anything else boxing is a step you're
- 30:10Speaker 1: always you're only making the next fight as you're fighting
- 30:12Speaker 1: line even though the current final hands important, the next bag,
- 30:16Speaker 1: the next event, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. That's
- 30:18Speaker 1: how the sports cells itself. So that's kind of where
- 30:21Speaker 1: we're at with him. Not necessarily concerned about Saturday, but
- 30:24Speaker 1: he's one of the few guys where he's fighting someone,
- 30:28Speaker 1: it can literally be an event and that's huge.
- 30:31Speaker 2: Yeah, and obviously this is me speaking anecdotally, and yes,
- 30:34Speaker 2: I live in Tucson. Betavide is from Phoenix, so you know,
- 30:37Speaker 2: I see people come out for him. You know that
- 30:39Speaker 2: he is an exciting fighter that people he has a
- 30:41Speaker 2: lot of fans.
- 30:42Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 30:42Speaker 2: Sure, maybe it's because he has a lot of fans
- 30:45Speaker 2: here because this is where he's from, But I don't know.
- 30:47Speaker 2: It seems to be based on what I've seen, like
- 30:49Speaker 2: he's got a lot of he's got a lot of
- 30:52Speaker 2: hype and a lot of people behind him, and he's
- 30:55Speaker 2: been just the one of the most avoided fighters and
- 30:59Speaker 2: that higher weight class range in recent history. I think
- 31:05Speaker 2: that he definitely he made a good choice stepping up
- 31:08Speaker 2: and sticking around the you know, the light heavyweight weight class.
- 31:14Speaker 2: The question is he's always one of the big names
- 31:18Speaker 2: better be versus Beovil. Now here's an interesting one. Better
- 31:20Speaker 2: be If was supposed to be on this card. I
- 31:22Speaker 2: don't know if you remember us talking about it. You know,
- 31:24Speaker 2: earlier in the year he dropped out for reasons unknown,
- 31:26Speaker 2: whatever doesn't matter. So that was kind of there was
- 31:30Speaker 2: already some grumblings of like, well, these two guys are
- 31:32Speaker 2: fighting on the card. Depending on how they look, they
- 31:34Speaker 2: might match up together. But in this I mean to
- 31:36Speaker 2: we worry about Better Be of just kind of being
- 31:39Speaker 2: like on his way out, you know, he took a
- 31:40Speaker 2: very prominent l against people. But also, you know, not
- 31:45Speaker 2: the man's legacy is secure. You know, that man went
- 31:49Speaker 2: out literally went out swinging, and he looked great in
- 31:52Speaker 2: that fight. He wasn't embarrassed, He wasn't you know, snoozing
- 31:55Speaker 2: or anything. Just you know, happened to take the l.
- 31:59Speaker 2: But he's also agatting, you know, getting up there in age.
- 32:01Speaker 2: I don't know if he's I think he's over. Is
- 32:05Speaker 2: he over forty now? But here he is forty, he's forty,
- 32:09Speaker 2: So yeah, I mean, is that are we going to
- 32:12Speaker 2: see the end of the Better be Of era? And
- 32:15Speaker 2: you know there's a lot of like a lot of
- 32:19Speaker 2: the older kind of Eastern European boxers are kind of
- 32:22Speaker 2: on their way out. Alexander Rusk, biggest win of his career,
- 32:26Speaker 2: hasn't really been talking about him coming back. Almachenko just
- 32:30Speaker 2: officially retired. Of course talked about coming back, but that's
- 32:33Speaker 2: neither here nor there. The point is that, you know,
- 32:35Speaker 2: there's that era of these Eastern European guys that seems
- 32:38Speaker 2: to be kind of in decline, not because of their skills,
- 32:40Speaker 2: because you know they're they're getting up there in age
- 32:42Speaker 2: and they're but ready hanging up. So I don't know
- 32:45Speaker 2: where do we think that better? Mean this is going
- 32:47Speaker 2: to land? Do you think do we think that he
- 32:49Speaker 2: has a people a chance at people next year?
- 32:52Speaker 1: That's to be the thing we don't know right Like
- 32:54Speaker 1: it's there's no obvious choice, there's no obvious matches, like, oh,
- 33:00Speaker 1: this is a no brainer. It's really weird because as
- 33:05Speaker 1: of right now, I would be inconclusive with the answer.
- 33:08Speaker 1: I would say, hey, we need to wait for this
- 33:10Speaker 1: fight to end and see what else is out there,
- 33:12Speaker 1: But right now there's really nothing that's like a no
- 33:14Speaker 1: Brainer's get this matter mached tomorrow one Saturday finishes. I
- 33:18Speaker 1: don't see that right now.
- 33:20Speaker 2: But but why not, because again, this the guy bene
- 33:24Speaker 2: Vitez went up to that weight class. Bevil is the
- 33:27Speaker 2: guy to be. You know, he's he's a star. He
- 33:29Speaker 2: looked great and in both fights against better b I'm
- 33:31Speaker 2: sure he lost the first one, took the w on
- 33:34Speaker 2: the second one, but he still looked great. And you
- 33:37Speaker 2: know he's he's not sure. He's taken some time off
- 33:41Speaker 2: to recover from like a hand injury or something like that.
- 33:43Speaker 2: Doesn't whatever it is, I don't remember, but he's not
- 33:46Speaker 2: going to be back till twenty six. But like bena
- 33:49Speaker 2: Vitez has just been kind of doing his thing, fighting
- 33:51Speaker 2: whoever he needs to fight is get his name out
- 33:53Speaker 2: there and show that he's proven. Like I don't see
- 33:55Speaker 2: any other big name other than better be If at
- 33:58Speaker 2: that weight class. Right again, he's on his way out.
- 34:01Speaker 1: He's not the way out. There's no there's one I
- 34:04Speaker 1: remember once, Terrence Crawford, one that was trying to make
- 34:06Speaker 1: that fight. But as Terns Coffor came out immediately. Nope,
- 34:09Speaker 1: we're not doing that. Hell no, no, probably no, we're not.
- 34:15Speaker 1: Oh no, they want to Crawford move like one seventy
- 34:18Speaker 1: remember he moved up for this one. Yes, they want
- 34:20Speaker 1: to move again. He was like, no, bro, I'm not
- 34:22Speaker 1: I'm not doing that. So fascines thing. I don't. That's
- 34:25Speaker 1: it's it's a weird thing. That's a good point. You
- 34:27Speaker 1: mentioned a lot of the euro guys have been taking
- 34:32Speaker 1: their money and bouncing. Uh. They're not fighting into their forties,
- 34:36Speaker 1: not running it back. And that's very interesting because the
- 34:40Speaker 1: money is there, there's always money there for a fight,
- 34:42Speaker 1: but a lot of guys just enjoying their you know,
- 34:44Speaker 1: joining their money and their fame and living happily ever after.
- 34:48Speaker 1: So it's a very good question that we don't have
- 34:51Speaker 1: an answer to right now. We may not get asked
- 34:53Speaker 1: you until early to mid next year, right I think
- 34:58Speaker 1: this year too retire.
- 35:00Speaker 2: So it was but yeah, sure, sure, sure, But I'm
- 35:03Speaker 2: just saying like it's it's on that wave of I mean,
- 35:07Speaker 2: and also it kind of I don't know anywhere near
- 35:09Speaker 2: enough to speak on this, but you know, the wave
- 35:12Speaker 2: of Eastern European fighters stars and that was was a thing.
- 35:15Speaker 2: You know, it was a thing that peaked, seems to
- 35:18Speaker 2: be on the way out just naturally, and you know,
- 35:21Speaker 2: what's going to be the next big thing for for boxing.
- 35:24Speaker 2: The next trend in boxing, I don't know, But then
- 35:28Speaker 2: the question always comes back to the same thing I feel.
- 35:30Speaker 2: I feel like we're goddamn broken records. Is it's more
- 35:33Speaker 2: difficult for a start to emerge because there's not enough
- 35:35Speaker 2: fights happening and they're harder to find now, you know,
- 35:39Speaker 2: like I was, I spoke well of watching topreck on
- 35:43Speaker 2: t B. I'll do it again, but it's not the
- 35:45Speaker 2: same as turning on ESPN on a Saturday night. It's
- 35:48Speaker 2: just not well.
- 35:50Speaker 1: The money behind the productions are way different, right. ESPN
- 35:52Speaker 1: has a big budget, Yes, a lot of production budget,
- 35:56Speaker 1: a lot of resources into a lot of effort behind it.
- 35:59Speaker 1: Like people think the lights come on Saturday night. Nah, bro,
- 36:03Speaker 1: they it starts Tuesday. Man. They're here, they get set up,
- 36:06Speaker 1: they interview, all the work, all the pre work, pre
- 36:10Speaker 1: set up, everything, man and fast. Thing that's noticed what
- 36:14Speaker 1: to me, HBO was the best HBO in their day.
- 36:17Speaker 1: They were flows with their production, they're on camera people,
- 36:22Speaker 1: their posts, pre and post stuff, the build up. They
- 36:25Speaker 1: were the example. And it takes a lot of money
- 36:27Speaker 1: to do that, and you got to have one to
- 36:29Speaker 1: with set money and not every media company understands that,
- 36:33Speaker 1: especially when it comes to boxing. So that's why it's
- 36:36Speaker 1: been such a drop off because HBO and Showtime did
- 36:39Speaker 1: a hell of a job with those things. ESPN was
- 36:42Speaker 1: cool because they're ESPN, they do sports, They're fine. But
- 36:45Speaker 1: other than that, it's been rough. Outside the the PBC
- 36:49Speaker 1: stuff that was on manastream television for a minute, outside
- 36:52Speaker 1: of that, it's been rough.
- 36:54Speaker 2: Right. I feel like what I would like is, and
- 36:58Speaker 2: you know, I don't believe it's everye happens like a
- 37:00Speaker 2: fantasy I'll say, is that HBO brings it back with
- 37:04Speaker 2: less of a budget. But it's like the nostalgia factor.
- 37:06Speaker 2: I mean, how many things are like, you know, are
- 37:08Speaker 2: we seeing coming back from our childhood and all these
- 37:10Speaker 2: TV shows getting rebooted, you know, and bringing back all
- 37:13Speaker 2: these things, And I feel like it would be a
- 37:15Speaker 2: big thing. It wouldn't be like it used to be.
- 37:17Speaker 2: They wouldn't be the big pick for you stars. But like,
- 37:20Speaker 2: I feel like there's an opportunity to say, HBO is
- 37:22Speaker 2: getting back in the boxing game. We're you know, we
- 37:25Speaker 2: were the ones to beat back in the day. They
- 37:26Speaker 2: still have a very good reputation for you know, quality shows.
- 37:29Speaker 2: It's not like their esteem has fallen or anything. Sure,
- 37:33Speaker 2: they wouldn't be putting you know, the production they were.
- 37:36Speaker 2: But just if if HBOS was like, yeah, we're gonna
- 37:39Speaker 2: have fights all summer every Saturday night, that I think
- 37:41Speaker 2: people will lose their shit, especially old heads like us.
- 37:43Speaker 1: So it wouldn't be HBO because they're out of sports
- 37:46Speaker 1: all together. But to be Amazon on Netflix, those are
- 37:49Speaker 1: or Apple, it have to be one of those because
- 37:51Speaker 1: those who have the money. So when you have money,
- 37:53Speaker 1: you could put together a really good production show. HBO
- 37:58Speaker 1: is out of sports, so I don't think they would
- 38:00Speaker 1: invest money going back into sports. But Netflix, Amazon and
- 38:04Speaker 1: Apple all do sports in some way, shape or form.
- 38:07Speaker 1: I think that'd be our best bet.
- 38:09Speaker 2: Sure, and that's what's most likely. I'm just saying, like,
- 38:11Speaker 2: you know, again the fantasy in my head of them saying,
- 38:14Speaker 2: you know, for a nostalgist purposes, we're not getting into
- 38:16Speaker 2: sports period, because I mean, and again, I've only ever
- 38:19Speaker 2: cared about boxing, because was there HBO ever known for
- 38:22Speaker 2: any other sport? Like did they ever get on anything?
- 38:24Speaker 2: Because I always remember.
- 38:25Speaker 1: A lot of documentaries and all that kind of stuff.
- 38:27Speaker 1: So HBOT sports department, I believe is all gone now
- 38:31Speaker 1: and boxing was a big part of that. I would
- 38:34Speaker 1: love for boxing about the HBO. Trust me, as someone
- 38:36Speaker 1: who pays for HBO, I would love for boxing back.
- 38:39Speaker 1: It's just unfortunately, once I got out the business ten
- 38:42Speaker 1: plus years ago, like it is what it is.
- 38:46Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I don't know. I mean I think, uh,
- 38:50Speaker 2: and that's their I mean it's fair for a network
- 38:53Speaker 2: to say, like that's everybody else's thing. And yeah, everybody
- 38:58Speaker 2: has an Amazon account at least, so you know, everybody
- 39:02Speaker 2: every smart TV comes with the Amazon app. So if
- 39:06Speaker 2: it just became a place to find a lot of
- 39:08Speaker 2: a lot of fights, then I think it's all going
- 39:10Speaker 2: to be pretty easy for everybody to find.
- 39:14Speaker 1: Do you have something No, I mean I really am
- 39:17Speaker 1: With'm with you. I just feel that you gotta make it.
- 39:20Speaker 1: You have to adapt and like you mentioned, everyone has Amazon.
- 39:23Speaker 1: Most people have Apple phone, Apple I phones or have
- 39:25Speaker 1: access to it. So make it easier for the people
- 39:28Speaker 1: who want to watch to watch it. Two be is
- 39:30Speaker 1: a thing where people who are six years old don't
- 39:33Speaker 1: know what two he is well, and it's being honest
- 39:35Speaker 1: with people who are of that age, they're not that
- 39:38Speaker 1: familiar with that. So go luck with that one.
- 39:43Speaker 2: That is fair, yes, but also to be is sort
- 39:46Speaker 2: of the prime the prime place to get the grand
- 39:48Speaker 2: pis in there because they have a lot of the
- 39:49Speaker 2: old nostalgia shows.
- 39:50Speaker 1: I don't know if you ever speed that they do.
- 39:52Speaker 1: But you want to be very you want to make
- 39:55Speaker 1: it as usually friendly as possible. That's just sight. You
- 39:58Speaker 1: want to make sure you're able to directs my very easily.
- 40:02Speaker 1: But at the end of the day, man, people want
- 40:04Speaker 1: to watch it. They're gonna watch it, and if two
- 40:07Speaker 1: is the thing, then people will get to it.
- 40:09Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's it's the thing that comes with with
- 40:13Speaker 2: every TV. It's like you have a remote and then
- 40:16Speaker 2: you have two b or and like I said, the
- 40:20Speaker 2: roke also the rop top break is also something called visio.
- 40:23Speaker 2: I have no idea what the hell video is, but
- 40:26Speaker 2: that was on the is it?
- 40:29Speaker 1: Yeah, videos are TV. Yeah, they do electronics.
- 40:32Speaker 2: Okay, maybe they have a video app that it's on.
- 40:34Speaker 2: But I saw it on Instagram when it said a
- 40:36Speaker 2: watch on uh two Yuroku and video, So yeah, it's wild.
- 40:40Speaker 2: I mean, you know the obviously this event on Saturday
- 40:43Speaker 2: that we're we're talking about, the ring Foard they call it.
- 40:45Speaker 2: That's pay per view event, so you know, financed by
- 40:49Speaker 2: the Saudi's and promote a Turkey la Hik who, by
- 40:51Speaker 2: the way, said the era of pay per view was
- 40:53Speaker 2: dead and now he's charging sixty bucks with the ship
- 40:54Speaker 2: just saying.
- 40:55Speaker 1: You know, of course, are we surprised like going out.
- 40:59Speaker 2: No, no, we're not surprised, But I feel like it
- 41:01Speaker 2: needs to be said. It needs to be you know,
- 41:04Speaker 2: put out there. But and also you know, also needs
- 41:07Speaker 2: to be said that the studies are involved because they're
- 41:10Speaker 2: trying to white wash their human rights abuses. Look at
- 41:12Speaker 2: Jamal Hashogi when you get a chance anyway. But yeah,
- 41:15Speaker 2: this fight is in Saudi Arabia. So Abdullah Mason goes
- 41:18Speaker 2: on at like six pm Eastern, three pm Pacific. Benavidez
- 41:21Speaker 2: ringwalks her about nine pm Eastern six pm Specific Pacific.
- 41:26Speaker 2: Jesus Man, I gotta stop drink when I wake up
- 41:30Speaker 2: in the morning. So yeah, I'm really excited about it.
- 41:34Speaker 2: I'm gonna be checking it out and hopefully I haven't
- 41:36Speaker 2: been nine of good fights. Oh and sorry, I forgot
- 41:38Speaker 2: to mention my prediction for Benavide is definitely a win.
- 41:41Speaker 2: I'm gonna say. I'm gonna say I'll go go all
- 41:43Speaker 2: in and say he gets the knockout. I'm gonna say
- 41:45Speaker 2: you smart enough fighter that he catches I think heard
- 41:46Speaker 2: and gets another knockout. And so that's I'm putting it
- 41:51Speaker 2: out there into the ethan.
- 41:53Speaker 1: All right.
- 41:54Speaker 2: So now that we reviewed that, it's time for a
- 41:57Speaker 2: recurring segment that we call pop Pugilism, in which we
- 42:00Speaker 2: discuss a movie, TV show or documentary about boxing. And
- 42:03Speaker 2: as always, the segment is brought to you by our
- 42:05Speaker 2: other sponsors, our friends at the Bad Movies, Worse People podcasts.
- 42:08Speaker 2: They send us a new ad. So let's check this out.
- 42:11Speaker 3: Well, Bad Movies, Worse People heard about it.
- 42:14Speaker 1: I'm on it, are you?
- 42:16Speaker 2: I'm on it too? Where can I hear it? Anywhere
- 42:18Speaker 2: you get a podcasts? You can get Spotify, I'MHEARTRADIOO YouTube
- 42:23Speaker 2: videos on YouTube.
- 42:24Speaker 3: I hear they have videos on Patreon as well, and
- 42:26Speaker 3: add free.
- 42:26Speaker 2: There's two different tiers, just like when I cry, the
- 42:31Speaker 2: inner and the outer.
- 42:33Speaker 3: It's Bad Movies, Worse People. We take a movie that
- 42:36Speaker 3: could be considered bad for whatever reason, use it as
- 42:39Speaker 3: a jumping off point to make inappropriate jokes and have
- 42:41Speaker 3: conversations that have almost nothing to do with the movie,
- 42:43Speaker 3: and then at the end we decide whether or not
- 42:45Speaker 3: we like it. If you want to laugh and you
- 42:47Speaker 3: like bad movies, come check us out because we usually
- 42:50Speaker 3: like them too.
- 42:51Speaker 2: I hope you like bad impersonations and accents.
- 42:53Speaker 1: There is the best thing I love about them is
- 42:56Speaker 1: they deliver every Monday.
- 42:58Speaker 2: They don't take breaks past.
- 43:00Speaker 3: An episode every single Monday, plus two Patreon episodes a month,
- 43:04Speaker 3: plus an episode every Friday in the thirteenth and more
- 43:07Speaker 3: and more and more and more.
- 43:08Speaker 2: Hand Knitting had Knitting, Hell Knitting Podcasting. Thanks you clowns.
- 43:19Speaker 2: Shout out to one of their hosts, Derek, who is
- 43:21Speaker 2: turning forty years old this month and celebrating by choosing
- 43:23Speaker 2: only movies he personally wants to talk about on the show.
- 43:26Speaker 2: Happy Birthday, Derek, Jamis and I are right behind you
- 43:29Speaker 2: because we are washed in turning thirty as well. Suit. So,
- 43:33Speaker 2: all right, the movie we're talking about today's a movie
- 43:36Speaker 2: that is still maybe still in theaters, probably not for
- 43:40Speaker 2: long by the time you hear this. It is called Christy,
- 43:43Speaker 2: directed by David Michaude or michad. I'm I'm really sure
- 43:46Speaker 2: how to pronounced that, starring Sidney Sweeney, Ben Foster, Merritt Weaver,
- 43:50Speaker 2: and Katie O'Brien. So this is the story of Christy Martin,
- 43:54Speaker 2: the person who legitimized women's boxing. Started boxing in the
- 43:58Speaker 2: late eighties, came to fame, and she signed with dun
- 44:00Speaker 2: King in nineteen eighty three. Fought on the undercard on
- 44:05Speaker 2: Travis Fights, Tyson Fights, lots of others. Was a closeted
- 44:08Speaker 2: lesbian most of her life, married her trainer James Martin,
- 44:11Speaker 2: and was a victim of horrible domestic abuse. It's a
- 44:13Speaker 2: wild story. Jameson before we get into the movie, can
- 44:16Speaker 2: you tell everybody what you remember about the real Christy
- 44:19Speaker 2: Martin in the boxing world?
- 44:20Speaker 1: Right? It's funny you mentioned that last thing. I remember.
- 44:23Speaker 1: She was always on undercards with big fights, and she
- 44:26Speaker 1: was like the first women's box that you repeatedly saw
- 44:30Speaker 1: whenever there was a big fight, you saw on undercard
- 44:33Speaker 1: or maybe even sometimes even before the right before the
- 44:35Speaker 1: big fight, and you'd see her she's really putting in
- 44:38Speaker 1: work and like damn, she'd really go. So that was
- 44:41Speaker 1: the thing that ran back my childhood is being able
- 44:44Speaker 1: to watch her fight literally twice a year on every
- 44:47Speaker 1: Don King or this big fight in general, she'd be
- 44:49Speaker 1: getting on her. It's only a handful of women's boxing
- 44:53Speaker 1: in that era that we really remember, and she's probably
- 44:56Speaker 1: the biggest one off top sure.
- 44:59Speaker 2: And what was the sort of pub perception of her.
- 45:01Speaker 2: I mean, obviously she's a talented boxer and she commended
- 45:03Speaker 2: respecting the ring, But where fans like a, get this
- 45:06Speaker 2: brought out of here? What is she doing there?
- 45:09Speaker 1: No, because it was it wasn't marketed like that. That's
- 45:12Speaker 1: the thing. It wasn't. It was marketed in its own way.
- 45:16Speaker 1: It wasn't like, it wasn't how to remember, it wasn't
- 45:18Speaker 1: its own car. It was my own car. I think
- 45:21Speaker 1: you would have got a lot of that. But it
- 45:23Speaker 1: was just a part of the vision of the big cards.
- 45:26Speaker 1: Whatever the big card was. That's what that was. It
- 45:30Speaker 1: wasn't a part of anything else. So I think that's
- 45:33Speaker 1: kind of where we're at with that. Again, she was
- 45:38Speaker 1: the first big one that we saw. Of course, there
- 45:40Speaker 1: was other ones that came along and you know, sur
- 45:42Speaker 1: passed her, but she was like the first one. We're like, oh,
- 45:45Speaker 1: she's fighting again, Oh this is her again. Oh I
- 45:47Speaker 1: remember her, I remember her. And then next thing you know,
- 45:49Speaker 1: she's fighting for like eight ten years wow, okay, and
- 45:52Speaker 1: you started expecting her on the other car. But I
- 45:54Speaker 1: remember her very well, very very well. And it was,
- 45:57Speaker 1: like I said, it was part of the It was
- 46:02Speaker 1: part of the whole program. It was part of the
- 46:04Speaker 1: whole card. It was a big part of you know,
- 46:07Speaker 1: whatever fight was going on, She was part of the evening.
- 46:09Speaker 1: It was really cool and you get to know her.
- 46:10Speaker 1: And then she also opens the lane up for others
- 46:14Speaker 1: to come behind her, you know, while her we don't
- 46:17Speaker 1: have Leila Ali like that. You know, we don't have
- 46:19Speaker 1: the ones that are fighting today. So those are things
- 46:21Speaker 1: that you look back yet, like Don King was very
- 46:24Speaker 1: smart not just putting on a random Tuesday and some
- 46:27Speaker 1: random place, but having it on a card when you
- 46:29Speaker 1: have seventeen thousand people in the building and millions plus
- 46:32Speaker 1: watching on TV. Very very brilliant marketing by Don King
- 46:37Speaker 1: and the people that beat.
- 46:39Speaker 2: Yeah, did you get any sense of, you know, anything
- 46:42Speaker 2: about a person life coming out you know or you know,
- 46:45Speaker 2: kind of seeping into the into the public consciousness or
- 46:48Speaker 2: result of just private like the movie showed.
- 46:50Speaker 1: I think a lot of pride. I think a lot
- 46:52Speaker 1: a lot of pride. But here's the thing, too. Back then,
- 46:56Speaker 1: we didn't care about people's sexualities like that. We kind
- 46:59Speaker 1: of it was kind of an known thing that if
- 47:01Speaker 1: a woman athlete, ifcial a boxer, we kind of knew
- 47:04Speaker 1: what it was like. People didn't care, like we care
- 47:06Speaker 1: about the boxing, not necessarily what you did off the corn,
- 47:10Speaker 1: out the ring or anything like that. It was just
- 47:12Speaker 1: oh she's fighting again, Oh she's nice. Oh yeah, fight's over.
- 47:16Speaker 1: That's it. It wasn't nothing else.
- 47:18Speaker 2: Well, and to be fair, I feel like if it
- 47:21Speaker 2: wasn't explicitly stated, but you know, there's a lot of
- 47:24Speaker 2: and maybe it's a difference between like actors. You know,
- 47:26Speaker 2: actors came out or and ruined their career. So I
- 47:28Speaker 2: would say that people did it care because that's I
- 47:31Speaker 2: mean still to this state. I mean, people are still
- 47:32Speaker 2: in the closet two days.
- 47:34Speaker 1: So I think women athletes is different. Okay, we don't
- 47:37Speaker 1: care about women athletes being gay like that.
- 47:40Speaker 2: Okay, that's fair. Yeah, I mean it really shows a
- 47:43Speaker 2: lot that the biggest people in the movie, the biggest
- 47:45Speaker 2: people who were really really against it are her family,
- 47:47Speaker 2: like her mother, like she's the one who absolutely was, like,
- 47:52Speaker 2: you know, completely against any kind of homosexuality. But yeah,
- 47:55Speaker 2: I mean, how did you think this movie worked or
- 47:59Speaker 2: not as a as a Christie Martin story Christy Salter's
- 48:03Speaker 2: maiden name.
- 48:04Speaker 1: It was cool, It was cool. It's interesting, like the
- 48:08Speaker 1: times right, and bring up the times, the family being
- 48:11Speaker 1: staunching against it and like being so like being alive
- 48:15Speaker 1: back then and kind of knowing how things go is
- 48:18Speaker 1: very fascinating how things have changed over thirty years because
- 48:21Speaker 1: in today's day, there's so much society pressure of letting
- 48:25Speaker 1: people be who they are, whether they gaze straight by whatever.
- 48:29Speaker 1: You let them be what they are, you don't judge.
- 48:31Speaker 1: That's how it is. Back then, it wasn't like that.
- 48:33Speaker 1: You got an old school mentality and that created a
- 48:36Speaker 1: lot of resentment in general. But yeah, it's it's very
- 48:39Speaker 1: fascinating how things have changed and whatnot. With that being said, unfortunately,
- 48:45Speaker 1: you know it fueled her, you know, and that's as
- 48:49Speaker 1: crazy as sounds. That's how a lot of athletes get
- 48:52Speaker 1: fueled as that, having resentment from the people who love
- 48:54Speaker 1: them or that they love. And here we are.
- 49:00Speaker 2: I mean, I think the movie, I think I think
- 49:02Speaker 2: it is a good movie. I think it's it's a
- 49:05Speaker 2: good portrayal of her story. I think the movie just
- 49:08Speaker 2: as a little as a little balance between the boxing
- 49:11Speaker 2: stuff and the personal stuff. This is very much, most
- 49:14Speaker 2: of the time a boxing movie, you know. So we've
- 49:16Speaker 2: talked about a lot of other movies that are about
- 49:18Speaker 2: boxers about their lives and the drama, et cetera, and
- 49:21Speaker 2: the sport in itself is not front and center. This
- 49:24Speaker 2: is not the case here. Like this is very much
- 49:26Speaker 2: the sport is front and center for most of the movie,
- 49:29Speaker 2: and then it goes completely away from that into her
- 49:31Speaker 2: personal life, which which is totally fine. I just felt
- 49:33Speaker 2: like we're watching two different things, you know, watching a
- 49:35Speaker 2: couple of different movies. Performances were good. You know, Sidney
- 49:39Speaker 2: Sweeney is not the most the most acclaimed dramatic actressows
- 49:48Speaker 2: she's not the most acclaim dramatic actress. I think she
- 49:50Speaker 2: did a good job here for her I think she
- 49:52Speaker 2: did a probably probably the best performance. But yeah, I mean,
- 49:55Speaker 2: let's be like I I watched some romantic that she
- 50:00Speaker 2: was in last year. There was a big hit with
- 50:01Speaker 2: her and Glen Powell, who I really like. Man, the
- 50:04Speaker 2: movie was terrible and she was terrible. She was awful
- 50:07Speaker 2: with that movie. But also she has bird in controversy. Now,
- 50:11Speaker 2: you know, she made an American eagle genad that was
- 50:14Speaker 2: kind of eugenics, e like implied eugenics, and in this
- 50:21Speaker 2: political climate, you know, she was actually asked about it
- 50:24Speaker 2: in a GQU interview, like what's up with this? And
- 50:27Speaker 2: she was like, I like wearing jeans. I wear jeans
- 50:30Speaker 2: and a T shirt all the time. I'm like the
- 50:32Speaker 2: most like either completely toned off or just went over
- 50:36Speaker 2: her head response. So I say that to say this,
- 50:41Speaker 2: this movie was a historic flop, like it is. It
- 50:44Speaker 2: is in the record book. So it's a fifteen million
- 50:47Speaker 2: dollar budget, had a one point three million dollar opening weekend,
- 50:51Speaker 2: which is at the bottom ten opening for wide releases ever.
- 50:56Speaker 2: Wide releases. Yeah yeah, so any wide releast considered anything
- 51:03Speaker 2: over two thousand screens. Okay, so this movie is in
- 51:07Speaker 2: the bottom ten of all of those movies ever released
- 51:11Speaker 2: in over two thousand streets. So I don't know if
- 51:15Speaker 2: maybe city swingeys, you know, celebrity is a little tainted
- 51:19Speaker 2: right there. She also had a couple of other flops
- 51:20Speaker 2: this year, I think before any of that other stuff
- 51:22Speaker 2: was came out, So I don't know, I mean, could
- 51:27Speaker 2: it be her, could it be that just movies about
- 51:31Speaker 2: female fighter asault sell as well.
- 51:33Speaker 1: As about market whatever you put out. You cannot not
- 51:36Speaker 1: marketing a sport movie, a boxing movie. This has to
- 51:38Speaker 1: have commercials, on podcasts, on TV shows. You got to mark.
- 51:42Speaker 1: If you're putting fifty million dollars into something, you spend
- 51:44Speaker 1: another million to market. If you're not gonna do that,
- 51:47Speaker 1: then you deserve whatever happens to you.
- 51:49Speaker 2: That's fair.
- 51:51Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 51:51Speaker 2: And I hadn't heard about this movie until, like I
- 51:54Speaker 2: just I go to the movies all the time. So
- 51:56Speaker 2: I saw it pop up on my my movie theater
- 51:58Speaker 2: app and I was like, what the hell is? What
- 52:00Speaker 2: the hell is it called Christy because I'll just click
- 52:02Speaker 2: on anything to see what it is. And a lot
- 52:05Speaker 2: of the times I don't know if it's it was
- 52:07Speaker 2: an AMC thing, but they have a lot of Jesus movies.
- 52:09Speaker 2: So they just have like, you know, a movie called
- 52:12Speaker 2: like Shining Light, and I'm like, okay, it's like, oh,
- 52:14Speaker 2: shining Light of Jesus coming from you know, this family
- 52:18Speaker 2: that that found their faith blah blah blah, which is weird.
- 52:20Speaker 2: So I'm always like, all right, let me let me
- 52:23Speaker 2: see if this is like a Jesus movie, Like, is
- 52:25Speaker 2: it Christy? Is that what it's supposed to be? But
- 52:31Speaker 2: wow around But anyway, no, so I so actually I
- 52:37Speaker 2: never saw a trailer. I didn't know anything about it
- 52:40Speaker 2: other than you know, Sidney Sweeney and boxing movie. So
- 52:43Speaker 2: I was like, oh, it's actually Christy Burton, like the
- 52:45Speaker 2: Real Fighter blah blah blah. So of course it's a
- 52:47Speaker 2: natural fit for the show. But another thing, I was
- 52:50Speaker 2: the only person in that movie theater, and that's green
- 52:54Speaker 2: that I was. I was by myself. I was by
- 52:58Speaker 2: my lonesome.
- 52:59Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 53:00Speaker 2: So it was, you know, just just kind of indicative
- 53:03Speaker 2: of how this movie just absolutely hit, just crashed and burned.
- 53:09Speaker 2: I'll say this, I don't think the movie, the movie
- 53:11Speaker 2: itself overall, you know, regardless of Sweeney's of Allman and
- 53:14Speaker 2: her controversy whatever, I don't think it deserved that. I
- 53:18Speaker 2: think Christy Martin's story definitely did not deserve that. I
- 53:21Speaker 2: think Christy Martin story deserves to be seen, heard, learned about,
- 53:27Speaker 2: and it's just it's just an incredible story gets wilder
- 53:31Speaker 2: and wilder the more you learn about it. But also,
- 53:36Speaker 2: now we've had two years in a row Jamison with
- 53:39Speaker 2: Theatrical released films about female boxers the flock. So if
- 53:43Speaker 2: you remember last Christmas, yep, we watched The Fire Inside
- 53:46Speaker 2: the Clarissa Shields movie that would decidely better eight million
- 53:50Speaker 2: dollars on a twelve million dollar budget. This one was
- 53:53Speaker 2: fifteen million. Was I don't know how it's gonna by
- 53:56Speaker 2: the time we leave theaters, it might be like less
- 53:57Speaker 2: than five. But still, I mean people are coming out
- 54:01Speaker 2: for it, and it's a bummer.
- 54:03Speaker 1: I mean people not paying to watch no movie. People
- 54:07Speaker 1: have fire six other apps. It's not happening.
- 54:10Speaker 2: That is this movie Attendance has gone down, but you
- 54:13Speaker 2: know there are it's picked back up from where for
- 54:16Speaker 2: where it was like, it's a sad again. The lowest
- 54:19Speaker 2: was like twenty twenty, so you can't really compare, you know.
- 54:22Speaker 2: You know, yes, we're coming back from that, you know,
- 54:25Speaker 2: the absolute crater, but you know, the movie business bouncing back.
- 54:29Speaker 2: This is my area of expertise because I love the
- 54:32Speaker 2: movie theaters. I love going to the movie like I
- 54:34Speaker 2: would always rather choose to go in than just watch
- 54:36Speaker 2: something at home.
- 54:37Speaker 1: If I have the opportunity.
- 54:39Speaker 2: So this is my bag. By the way, the speaking
- 54:43Speaker 2: of Jesus stuff Chicago pope whose name might forget that
- 54:47Speaker 2: man actually gave a speech on the importance of movies
- 54:49Speaker 2: in cinema. So I was like, man, am I gonna
- 54:51Speaker 2: go back to church? It was gonna eat church for
- 54:53Speaker 2: the first time since I was a baby, because you know,
- 54:56Speaker 2: I see why they call them infallible. But but yeah, movie,
- 55:00Speaker 2: movies cinema are very important to me.
- 55:02Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 55:02Speaker 2: I mean, what do you think this film kind of
- 55:04Speaker 2: stands on in terms of a boxing film? End of
- 55:09Speaker 2: the story? Like, do you think more people.
- 55:11Speaker 1: Said it was like it was like you said, it
- 55:13Speaker 1: was a it was a box for all the movies
- 55:15Speaker 1: we just watched. It was more boxing than the film,
- 55:18Speaker 1: and that makes sense. So it was I but it's
- 55:20Speaker 1: that I'm gonna watch again. Well, I'll probably forget it
- 55:24Speaker 1: before Thanksgiving. Be honest with you why. It's not like
- 55:29Speaker 1: I'm I wouldn't spend money at the theater for it.
- 55:33Speaker 1: So that's what we did. You know, cool? But nah,
- 55:37Speaker 1: this ain't really and it was all right, but it
- 55:40Speaker 1: was like it's like a homeworkssignment. It wasn't like, oh,
- 55:41Speaker 1: I'm going to watch this movies like, ah, all right,
- 55:44Speaker 1: and then you forget about it a couple of days later.
- 55:46Speaker 1: That's all.
- 55:47Speaker 2: Okay, I give it rate a little bit higher than
- 55:50Speaker 2: a homework assignment. You know, it's still I think it's
- 55:53Speaker 2: a pretty good depiction of boxing. You know, obviously trained
- 55:57Speaker 2: she she did the boxing scenes herself. You know, there
- 55:59Speaker 2: was in a stunt double. You can see that she
- 56:01Speaker 2: put in work, and I think I think those scenes
- 56:03Speaker 2: mostly look good. Not as good as in other films,
- 56:06Speaker 2: but I don't And it's my two favorite things in
- 56:10Speaker 2: the world one well two out of three movies. Boxing
- 56:12Speaker 2: and drinking are my favorite things in the world. So
- 56:15Speaker 2: h you know, there's worse ways to for me to
- 56:18Speaker 2: spent you know, a lonely weekday night in the theater
- 56:22Speaker 2: by myself. But yeah, I mean not the greatest. What
- 56:27Speaker 2: I think I will kind of say is that I
- 56:29Speaker 2: hope more people at least do some research into Christy
- 56:33Speaker 2: Martin's story, at the very least. You know. Actually, I
- 56:36Speaker 2: remember that there was a documentary about her on Netflix
- 56:39Speaker 2: called Deal with the Devil, So I have not seen it.
- 56:44Speaker 2: I will watch it. And if you absolutely don't want
- 56:46Speaker 2: to support sees Sydney sweetly cool man, you know, I'm
- 56:49Speaker 2: not going to argue the point. But I think that
- 56:52Speaker 2: not just an athlete, but as a as a historic figure,
- 56:56Speaker 2: as somebody that has an amazing story. The shit that
- 56:59Speaker 2: was she went through, I think Christy Martin deserves, uh
- 57:02Speaker 2: you know, there are respect, not just as boxing fans,
- 57:05Speaker 2: but like as a figure in our society. And I
- 57:08Speaker 2: just hope people learn.
- 57:08Speaker 1: More about her. That's fair.
- 57:11Speaker 2: Yeah, And oh and I cannot finish this off without
- 57:14Speaker 2: talking about Ben Foster, who plays her husband, James Martin
- 57:19Speaker 2: excell in this movie. Ben Foster is like it's like
- 57:21Speaker 2: Giovanni Ribisi on a budget. Like he's a we have
- 57:24Speaker 2: Giovanni Ribeci at home actor for a long time, but
- 57:28Speaker 2: it's very talented. It's just an actor has taken a
- 57:30Speaker 2: few risks here and there, like he used to be
- 57:32Speaker 2: kind of a young pretty boy that went away from
- 57:35Speaker 2: like the typical pretty boy actor route. So but he's
- 57:39Speaker 2: he is amazing in this movie and he plays the
- 57:42Speaker 2: scumbag has been so well. It's one of those like
- 57:45Speaker 2: Jeoff Free and Game of Thrones, like you know that
- 57:46Speaker 2: kid's a good actor because you just want to strangle him, right,
- 57:50Speaker 2: So definitely shout out to Ben and every everybody in
- 57:52Speaker 2: this movie.
- 57:53Speaker 1: Was great.
- 57:54Speaker 2: Sydney Sweeney was her best performance of somebody that's not
- 57:58Speaker 2: a great dramatic actress. So well, you know, we kind
- 58:01Speaker 2: of greater on a curve. Katie O'Brien, who's awesome was
- 58:06Speaker 2: is and this is Lisa Halloween. She is somebody that
- 58:09Speaker 2: I think deserves a lot more starring roles. Check out
- 58:12Speaker 2: the movie Love Life's Bleeding from a twenty four amazing
- 58:16Speaker 2: Katy O'Brien performance. I think she would have been a
- 58:18Speaker 2: better Christy Martin honestly than Sydney Sweety, to be honest
- 58:21Speaker 2: with you. But yeah, final thoughts on this. We've always
- 58:25Speaker 2: rate movies out of four gloves on this show. What
- 58:28Speaker 2: would you give the movie Christy.
- 58:31Speaker 1: Two point seven? It wasn't bad movie. It wasn't like
- 58:35Speaker 1: you thing, It wasn't that about, oh you gotta go
- 58:38Speaker 1: see this. But it was cool for what it was
- 58:40Speaker 1: why it told the story well, and it was just
- 58:43Speaker 1: strictly an assignment type of film. It wasn't like, oh,
- 58:47Speaker 1: this is dope, I'll rewatch when it comes on regular TV.
- 58:50Speaker 1: But if for what it was, it was it was
- 58:53Speaker 1: really solid.
- 58:54Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, I just figured out this is what
- 58:57Speaker 2: it is. This is the biggest issue. This is movie
- 58:59Speaker 2: has awesome your bait written all over it. This has
- 59:01Speaker 2: failed Oscar bait.
- 59:05Speaker 1: For something, and they missed completely.
- 59:07Speaker 2: You're correct, Yes, there's there's very clearly it's one thing
- 59:11Speaker 2: to be like Oscar Bay and it's a good movie.
- 59:13Speaker 2: It just didn't make it. This is failed Oscar bait
- 59:16Speaker 2: and you could tell Sweeney was trying hard to try,
- 59:19Speaker 2: real hard. So uh but like I said, movie theater experience,
- 59:24Speaker 2: I still love watching you boxing stories and and at
- 59:27Speaker 2: the very least Christy story was was really interesting. So
- 59:30Speaker 2: I'm gonna go three three gloves on my Yeah. So yeah,
- 59:35Speaker 2: nothing nothing amazing, nothing. But also I wasn't like I
- 59:38Speaker 2: was in there, just kind of annoyed, like when the
- 59:40Speaker 2: hell is.
- 59:41Speaker 1: Going to be over or anything like that.
- 59:42Speaker 2: So you know, but yeah, I'm definitely gonna check out
- 59:46Speaker 2: the documentary. It's actually called Untold Colon Deal with the Devil,
- 59:50Speaker 2: So hopefully that's that's better. And yeah, I would recommend
- 59:53Speaker 2: everybody to very least read up on Christy Martin. It's
- 59:56Speaker 2: a crazy story. So all right, so Jamison, where can
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: people find you? On social media?
