- 0:00Speaker 1: For some, prison is where it ends. For all, court
- 0:05Speaker 1: is where it begins. This ain't no TV show. This
- 0:10Speaker 1: is the real world. And this is what's happening at
- 0:14Speaker 1: the courthouse on KFM Mornings with Ramiz.
- 0:20Speaker 2: Okay, so this is where Ramiz patrols the steps of
- 0:24Speaker 2: various courthouses in the Western Cape. Tried it once in
- 0:28Speaker 2: London when we did the show there. And he literally
- 0:31Speaker 2: got ran out of town by the cops there.
- 0:34Speaker 3: Very quickly.
- 0:35Speaker 4: They almost arrested me. They said, no, what are you
- 0:38Speaker 4: doing here? We don't do that here. Please, please leave. Oh,
- 0:42Speaker 4: so boring.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Get out.
- 0:45Speaker 5: Whereas South Africans are more than happy to share their stories.
- 0:48Speaker 2: Here at the head office of crime, we... The police
- 0:53Speaker 2: actually want a selfie with Ramis. We're quite free to speak.
- 0:56Speaker 6: Yes.
- 0:57Speaker 7: Yes.
- 0:59Speaker 2: But not at the Crown Court in the UK.
- 1:02Speaker 8: Nope.
- 1:04Speaker 2: So, out at the city courts yesterday, Remy's asking everybody
- 1:10Speaker 2: one simple question.
- 1:12Speaker 9: What are you doing at the courthouse today? I'm here
- 1:14Speaker 9: for Robert and Edgar Waited. What does that actually mean?
- 1:18Speaker 9: When you rob someone... Like a knife or.
- 1:21Speaker 10: Like a knife or anything like that, and then he
- 1:23Speaker 10: go make a case against you.
- 1:25Speaker 4: Did you rob someone? He took my money.
- 1:27Speaker 10: He picked up my money up in the truck, and
- 1:29Speaker 10: then there's where I decide, I asked him, I go,
- 1:31Speaker 10: please man, don't you want to give my money back?
- 1:32Speaker 10: My money just fell out. What do you mean, out
- 1:35Speaker 10: of the truck? I took him on for the assistance
- 1:38Speaker 10: for the day with me. So he was working with you?
- 1:41Speaker 10: I got to commit the gaiters in the morning. So
- 1:43Speaker 10: we worked.
- 1:44Speaker 4: And then you were saying that he stole your money.
- 1:47Speaker 10: He picked it up in the truck, as I said.
- 1:49Speaker 10: As I told him, it was my children's, Kimby's money.
- 1:52Speaker 4: Which is Nappy's now. Exactly. And then what happened?
- 1:55Speaker 10: I beat him because he said he didn't do it.
- 1:58Speaker 10: And I said to him, please, my bro, man, don't
- 2:00Speaker 10: do that. He showed me his wallet and said, look here,
- 2:01Speaker 10: this is my money. I said, bro, please, man, you
- 2:04Speaker 10: never had money during the day because you didn't even
- 2:07Speaker 10: have something to eat this morning. We got a tip,
- 2:09Speaker 10: a hundred grand tip at the customer where we worked
- 2:12Speaker 10: the first delivery. Each one got a hundred grand. Because
- 2:16Speaker 10: this way I said, okay, you want to go buy something?
- 2:18Speaker 10: We both went to go buy something. Did you get
- 2:20Speaker 10: more tips? No, that was my money that we got
- 2:23Speaker 10: as our salary.
- 2:24Speaker 9: Okay, so how much money did you say that he
- 2:26Speaker 9: stole basically from you?
- 2:28Speaker 4: A thousand.
- 2:29Speaker 7: What?
- 2:29Speaker 10: A thousand.
- 2:30Speaker 4: Fell out of my work pocket.
- 2:32Speaker 10: And my work pocket is like, the pocket is like short.
- 2:35Speaker 10: So this is where it fell out. We swapped seats also.
- 2:39Speaker 10: And then he sat on my seat. That's where I
- 2:41Speaker 10: didn't realize that my money fell out. Where I realized,
- 2:43Speaker 10: where I put my hand in my pocket and found out, hey,
- 2:45Speaker 10: but the money is missing. I asked him, my brother,
- 2:47Speaker 10: didn't you see my money?
- 2:49Speaker 4: No. And then he started to get, how can I say? Aggressive.
- 2:52Speaker 3: Aggressive.
- 2:52Speaker 10: Then I'm like, my bro, please man, don't let me
- 2:54Speaker 10: do something that I will regret tomorrow. And look what,
- 2:56Speaker 10: where am I?
- 2:57Speaker 4: I'm at the court today. Then he laid a case
- 3:00Speaker 4: against you? Yes, correct.
- 3:01Speaker 7: What?
- 3:02Speaker 10: Came back to work the next morning. Police came to
- 3:04Speaker 10: work and they arrested me.
- 3:06Speaker 4: Where's the money though? I need to pay him back now.
- 3:09Speaker 10: No! Yes. He want to withdraw the case. I asked him,
- 3:12Speaker 10: what do you want for this case? Because you are
- 3:15Speaker 10: the wrong man. And then he said, I don't.
- 3:17Speaker 2: Know, bro.
- 3:18Speaker 4: I said, okay, talk numbers to me. I don't know, bro.
- 3:21Speaker 10: And now he decided he wants 3,000. I'm like, oh, no, bro.
- 3:24Speaker 10: I don't have 3,000 for you.
- 3:26Speaker 4: Do you know for sure that he stole your 1,000 rand?
- 3:29Speaker 10: There was no one else who could do it.
- 3:31Speaker 4: It was only him.
- 3:32Speaker 10: He was the one who decided he was going to
- 3:34Speaker 10: up-tail me, but I was so strong, and I knocked
- 3:36Speaker 10: him down, and that's where he got the knock on
- 3:38Speaker 10: his head.
- 3:40Speaker 4: Oh, my word. Your 1,000 rand is still gone.
- 3:43Speaker 10: It's gone, and now I need to pay him to
- 3:45Speaker 10: brought it down to 2,000.
- 3:46Speaker 4: Okay.
- 3:47Speaker 10: As I'm talking here, I need to be back in
- 3:50Speaker 10: court to go.
- 3:51Speaker 4: Get the bail money.
- 3:52Speaker 10: Yes, correct.
- 3:53Speaker 4: And now you're losing out completely.
- 3:55Speaker 10: I just need this case to finish, man, because just
- 3:57Speaker 10: eating my leave days at work. It's been a year already.
- 3:59Speaker 10: So like now I'm tired.
- 4:03Speaker 4: But all the best. Thank you very much for your time.
- 4:05Speaker 10: You same to you.
- 4:06Speaker 4: Bye bye. What are you doing at the courthouse today?
- 4:09Speaker 8: I've appeared for my last court case to do with
- 4:13Speaker 8: interference of justice.
- 4:15Speaker 3: Basically, I questioned the police.
- 4:18Speaker 4: Initially, what happened for them to lock you up?
- 4:22Speaker 8: This happened November 24. I was sleeping at my girlfriend's place.
- 4:27Speaker 8: Something happened between her and her grandmother when I wasn't there.
- 4:31Speaker 8: The night before, they laid a charge against her without
- 4:34Speaker 8: me knowing.
- 4:35Speaker 3: Me sleeping there the morning.
- 4:37Speaker 8: four male police officers then came to arrest her.
- 4:40Speaker 10: Oh.
- 4:41Speaker 8: So then me asking questions as to why it's four
- 4:44Speaker 8: male officers and no female officers involved, then got me
- 4:48Speaker 8: arrested as well.
- 4:50Speaker 9: So both of you then get arrested. Your girlfriend's grandmother
- 4:53Speaker 9: laid a case against her.
- 4:54Speaker 3: Yes.
- 4:55Speaker 4: What for?
- 4:56Speaker 3: Some domestic abuse or something. Dispute or whatever. Okay.
- 5:00Speaker 4: Your question is obviously justifiable. There should be a female officer.
- 5:07Speaker 4: And they knew this.
- 5:08Speaker 9: Obviously, before they arrived at this house. Just because of
- 5:12Speaker 9: that one question, they arrested you.
- 5:14Speaker 3: They arrested me, yeah.
- 5:16Speaker 8: I then took my phone out, started questioning the officers
- 5:19Speaker 8: as to what branch they're from.
- 5:21Speaker 3: Can I get your name?
- 5:22Speaker 9: Can I get your number?
- 5:25Speaker 3: That then aggravated it.
- 5:27Speaker 8: Them taking my phone away, putting me in cuffs and
- 5:30Speaker 8: arresting me.
- 5:31Speaker 4: Were you very aggressive with them?
- 5:33Speaker 3: Not at all.
- 5:35Speaker 4: Did they feel that you were aggressive with them?
- 5:38Speaker 3: Maybe, but I was not aggressive at all.
- 5:40Speaker 4: Were you recording?
- 5:42Speaker 3: I was recording. The videos were then deleted off my phone.
- 5:46Speaker 10: Oh.
- 5:46Speaker 8: The images of their faces and their badges was deleted
- 5:50Speaker 8: off my phone.
- 5:51Speaker 4: They obviously have no right to touch your phone.
- 5:53Speaker 3: Apparently they do. Apparently the law has.
- 5:57Speaker 8: A law above that, so even asking a police officer
- 6:00Speaker 8: a question.
- 6:01Speaker 3: Can get you locked up. That's what I got locked
- 6:04Speaker 3: up for.
- 6:05Speaker 4: And they said this in court?
- 6:06Speaker 3: They never appeared.
- 6:07Speaker 8: Since 2024 up till now, the police have never appeared.
- 6:11Speaker 9: You've been coming to court for the last two years.
- 6:13Speaker 3: My first offence, by the way.
- 6:16Speaker 5: Ever?
- 6:17Speaker 3: Ever.
- 6:17Speaker 8: Thank God that it's finally over. It's been stopping me
- 6:21Speaker 8: from getting work.
- 6:22Speaker 4: What are the courts saying here? Why did it take
- 6:25Speaker 4: so long?
- 6:26Speaker 8: The police not doing their job. 2025, there was dockets missing.
- 6:30Speaker 8: I couldn't find the dockets. I just began reappearing, reappearing, postponed, postponed.
- 6:35Speaker 4: Your girlfriend, is she still your girlfriend?
- 6:38Speaker 3: She's now my wife.
- 6:39Speaker 4: Oh, look at you.
- 6:40Speaker 3: She's now my wife, yes. We have a baby boy.
- 6:42Speaker 3: He's now one.
- 6:44Speaker 8: Turned out to be something good from it.
- 6:47Speaker 4: Is her case still ongoing?
- 6:49Speaker 8: Yes, her case is still ongoing.
- 6:50Speaker 4: So yours is done and hers is still going?
- 6:52Speaker 3: Yes, it's still going.
- 6:53Speaker 9: Are you going to take this further, seeing that your
- 6:55Speaker 9: case is now complete?
- 6:57Speaker 3: No, I'm done with the law.
- 7:00Speaker 4: You just don't want to be at this court?
- 7:01Speaker 3: I just don't want to be at this court, yeah.
- 7:03Speaker 8: It's just a waste of time and money and that's
- 7:06Speaker 8: what it is.
- 7:07Speaker 4: But all the best, sir. I thank you for your story.
- 7:10Speaker 8: Learn the law, because the police have.
- 7:13Speaker 3: Laws above our rights as citizens.
- 7:17Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 7:17Speaker 8: Because asking a simple question can get you locked up.
- 7:20Speaker 4: Thank you very much for your time, sir.
- 7:22Speaker 3: You're welcome.
- 7:22Speaker 2: Bye-bye.
- 7:24Speaker 4: Fascinating.
- 7:27Speaker 2: Scary.
- 7:27Speaker 4: You think there's more to it, Ramis? No, I don't
- 7:31Speaker 4: think there's more to it. Hey.
- 7:32Speaker 8: No.
- 7:32Speaker 4: And I love that for that guy also.
- 7:34Speaker 2: He's like, I'm done now.
- 7:36Speaker 4: I've had enough.
- 7:38Speaker 9: If he really wanted to, if there was more to it,
- 7:41Speaker 9: I think he would have taken it further.
- 7:43Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 7:44Speaker 2: But also, you know, it's just tiring. To what gain?
- 7:49Speaker 2: Just get on with your life.
- 7:50Speaker 4: Exactly.
- 7:51Speaker 1: Whatever.
- 7:51Speaker 4: But also, again, the importance of knowing your rights.
- 7:55Speaker 6: Like, can an officer just take your phone and delete images?
- 7:59Speaker 5: But also, then, what do you do in that moment
- 8:00Speaker 5: when there is that tension, right?
- 8:02Speaker 2: No, you're scared.
- 8:03Speaker 3: You're scared.
- 8:04Speaker 2: Because what's next?
- 8:06Speaker 4: Okay, I know my rights, officer.
- 8:08Speaker 2: A trumped-up resisting arrest, throwing you in the back of
- 8:10Speaker 2: a van, you spend the night in jail.
- 8:12Speaker 5: You know what I mean?
- 8:13Speaker 2: But what does the law state?
- 8:14Speaker 6: And also, what do the consequences look like for these cops?
- 8:18Speaker 4: How come they never appeared?
- 8:20Speaker 2: To be honest, I don't know what the law states.
- 8:22Speaker 2: But I've had my phone taken away before.
- 8:26Speaker 3: That doesn't sound right.
- 8:29Speaker 5: Is that legal, officer?
- 8:30Speaker 2: Well, I was in Dubai.
- 8:33Speaker 4: A different country.
- 8:34Speaker 2: With Brad. With my sidekick, producer Brad. Was it because
- 8:40Speaker 2: of your recording equipment? We were filming on top of
- 8:43Speaker 2: the Burj Khalifa. We created a bit of a scene.
- 8:46Speaker 4: Okay, so I'm on the government side here.
- 8:48Speaker 10: Yeah, yeah.
- 8:49Speaker 2: No, it was a funny thing. We were doing a
- 8:52Speaker 2: prank up top there.
- 8:53Speaker 4: Government don't find it funny there.
- 8:55Speaker 2: And they were watching us on the cameras. We didn't know.
- 8:59Speaker 4: They came to get you.
- 9:00Speaker 2: Yeah, and we were like trying to film all sort
- 9:02Speaker 2: of incognito, holding your phone. You just got your hand
- 9:07Speaker 2: on your chest with the phone in there.
- 9:08Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 9:09Speaker 2: They knew everything. They came, give us your phones. Eyes everywhere. Yeah,
- 9:13Speaker 2: because while that was happening, we were trying to go,
- 9:15Speaker 2: just quickly WhatsApp the footage. WhatsApp the footage to South Africa.
- 9:18Speaker 2: WhatsApp it now. And you know how long that... They
- 9:23Speaker 2: grabbed our phones. They deleted the stuff. And we went down.
- 9:26Speaker 2: You know, we actually had a special exit with no
- 9:29Speaker 2: people coming down the Burj Khalifa.
- 9:32Speaker 5: Not all of this for a prank. Like you're a
- 9:34Speaker 5: spy or something. Like you and Brad are spies.
- 9:37Speaker 2: But look, to the defense in the UAE, they've got
- 9:44Speaker 2: a very specific law where you're not allowed to film...
- 9:47Speaker 2: Anybody without their permission.
- 9:48Speaker 4: Of course.
- 9:49Speaker 2: So while we were filming our people, there were other
- 9:51Speaker 2: people in the show.
- 9:52Speaker 4: Other people in the back, yeah.
- 9:53Speaker 2: And that is illegal. So we didn't know that. So
- 9:57Speaker 2: they were right. It's according to their law. I don't
- 10:00Speaker 2: know what our law says about that. I know our law,
- 10:05Speaker 2: if you're in a public place, you can film people.
- 10:07Speaker 5: You can show courtesy and try not to have people
- 10:10Speaker 5: in your footage.
- 10:12Speaker 4: But it's not illegal.
- 10:14Speaker 2: When it comes to kids, I think the law is
- 10:16Speaker 2: slightly different there. But then again, I think a public
- 10:20Speaker 2: place usurps your right to privacy if you're in a
- 10:26Speaker 2: public place. I think that's what our law says. It
- 10:28Speaker 2: needs to be checked. Lawyer, please confirm or deny. But
- 10:31Speaker 2: that was what's happening at the courthouse. Thank you, Ramiz.
- 10:35Speaker 4: Thank you very much.
- 10:37Speaker 2: Let's jam a tune in here before we get to news.
- 10:40Speaker 2: It's Lucas Graham with Second Chance here on KFM Mornings.
- 10:44Speaker 2: We'll get your comments on a little bit later. We've
- 10:46Speaker 2: got to jump to news and sports now. Vanessa. It's
- 10:51Speaker 2: Katy Perry, California Girls, here on KFM Mornings, quarter to
- 10:54Speaker 2: 8 o'clock. We've got some comments here from what's happening
- 10:57Speaker 2: at the courthouse. If you've just tuned in now, I'm
- 11:01Speaker 2: afraid you missed it. We ran it a bit early
- 11:04Speaker 2: today because of a palmolot contest, which is coming up
- 11:07Speaker 2: right now as well. But here are some of your
- 11:09Speaker 2: comments from the courthouse.
- 11:11Speaker 11: Something is not right. How on earth does your money
- 11:14Speaker 11: fall out of your pocket?
- 11:15Speaker 3: What type of.
- 11:16Speaker 11: Pants was this guy wearing? And why is his money
- 11:20Speaker 11: not in a wallet? Something's not right.
- 11:22Speaker 10: To that first guy, your life lesson, no good deed
- 11:27Speaker 10: goes unpunished. Wow, that's some.
- 11:31Speaker 6: Hectic drama on a Thursday morning.
- 11:33Speaker 11: I'm just thinking the judges involved, wow, they must have
- 11:36Speaker 11: through a lot to try and resolve these issues.
- 11:40Speaker 7: The second story this morning is the reason why people
- 11:43Speaker 7: don't turn to the police in this country, because you
- 11:47Speaker 7: think you've got rights and then the police ask you
- 11:50Speaker 7: to come forward, come for assistance. That's why no one
- 11:53Speaker 7: does it, because you don't know where you stand with
- 11:55Speaker 7: the police and what your rights are.
- 11:58Speaker 10: The police can't just take your phone. and delete that
- 12:03Speaker 10: he's tampering with evidence.
- 12:04Speaker 6: Yeah i can't believe that second guy because that happened
- 12:07Speaker 6: to me saw officers beating up a guy took my
- 12:10Speaker 6: phone up recorded and then i got a gun pointed
- 12:12Speaker 6: to my face my phone smacked out of my hand
- 12:15Speaker 6: and videos deleted so yeah yeah what.
- 12:21Speaker 4: It's terrible how many people have similar.
- 12:23Speaker 2: Stories yeah and um You are allowed to film the
- 12:29Speaker 2: police in an altercation, in a public space, in the
- 12:32Speaker 2: performance of public duties. You're absolutely allowed to.
- 12:35Speaker 4: And that other listener is very right.
- 12:37Speaker 1: If you just delete footage, that is potentially you tampering
- 12:41Speaker 1: with evidence.
- 12:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:43Speaker 4: Because SAPS doesn't have body cams at the moment.
- 12:46Speaker 5: I know there's some plans to have them in the future.
- 12:51Speaker 4: Oh, come on.
- 12:52Speaker 2: We know.
- 12:53Speaker 7: We know.
- 12:53Speaker 2: But.
- 12:55Speaker 2: Come on. This isn't America. We know those things are
- 13:01Speaker 2: never going to work. Did you charge your body cam? No,
- 13:04Speaker 2: we didn't have power.
- 13:06Speaker 5: We don't even have vehicle dashboard cams there by Saps.
- 13:10Speaker 4: Actually, what's going on?
- 13:11Speaker 5: Instead, they're slapping our phones out of our hands, which
- 13:16Speaker 5: is sometimes very important evidence in cases.
- 13:19Speaker 4: And also now so terrible because we also have so
- 13:21Speaker 4: many good cops.
- 13:22Speaker 2: But it's always the bad ones giving everyone a bad name.
- 13:26Speaker 2: But you know what's the scariest thing of the lot?
- 13:29Speaker 2: And I've had these arguments with some people, senior people,
- 13:34Speaker 2: is that some of our law enforcers don't actually know
- 13:40Speaker 2: the law themselves. They don't know the law. They interpret
- 13:47Speaker 2: it however they want to interpret it. And they think
- 13:49Speaker 2: they are applying the law, but what they're doing is illegal.
- 13:52Speaker 2: But they don't even know. A lot of the time,
- 13:54Speaker 2: it's not even about that. It's just about, well, look,
- 13:56Speaker 2: this is how we operate, you know, in intimidation.
- 13:59Speaker 5: And obviously, there is a power dynamic as a civilian
- 14:01Speaker 5: and a police officer.
- 14:03Speaker 4: You're going to listen to the officer because.
- 14:05Speaker 2: Well, he's got the gun.
- 14:06Speaker 4: He's got the power.
- 14:08Speaker 2: He's got the gun. He can throw you in a cell,
- 14:11Speaker 2: which is not what you want to happen, right? So, yeah. Look,
- 14:17Speaker 2: it's a story for another day. But that was What's
- 14:21Speaker 2: Happening at the Courthouse.
