- 0:10Speaker 1: Hello, everyone, Welcome to the Inside the Birds postgame show.
- 0:13Speaker 1: I'm Jeff Mosher. That's Adam Kaplan and the Philadelphia Eagles.
- 0:18Speaker 1: They're just NFC each champs for the second year in
- 0:20Speaker 1: a row. No big deal. It just hadn't been done
- 0:23Speaker 1: since two thousand and three and two thousand and four
- 0:25Speaker 1: when the Eagles themselves did it, So a two decades
- 0:29Speaker 1: long streak is over. Adam. The Eagles beat the Commanders
- 0:33Speaker 1: twenty nine to eighteen. And there was at one point
- 0:37Speaker 1: in the I guess end of the first quarter and
- 0:39Speaker 1: the half. I texted you and I said, my line
- 0:41Speaker 1: is always right. This game just doesn't follow script. I
- 0:44Speaker 1: mean the fact that the Eagles would be losing this
- 0:46Speaker 1: game at halftime, that their kicker would miss three different
- 0:49Speaker 1: field goal attempts, there will be a brawl at the
- 0:51Speaker 1: end of the game, that Josh Johnson, who oddly enough
- 0:55Speaker 1: has started the game against the Eagles before in the
- 0:57Speaker 1: twy eighteen season, would be on the field in the
- 1:00Speaker 1: second half. That's just how this game goes. But the
- 1:04Speaker 1: Eagles win. I saw some encouraging things I think in
- 1:06Speaker 1: the past game, certainly in the run game later in
- 1:10Speaker 1: the game, and not so much on special teams and
- 1:14Speaker 1: we'll talk about it. We'll talk about it, but the
- 1:16Speaker 1: big thing is, Adam, there are some things that are
- 1:19Speaker 1: coming along in the Eagles r NFC East champs, so
- 1:20Speaker 1: they're guaranteed a top four seed here in the NFC playoffs.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Yeah, they host a home game, you know, in the
- 1:27Speaker 2: first round, so that we'll see who that who that's
- 1:31Speaker 2: going to be. But the bottom line is they won.
- 1:34Speaker 2: It was sort of an ugly game at times. To
- 1:36Speaker 2: be honest with you, I'll be interesting looking at social media.
- 1:40Speaker 2: I like to go through the I like to kind
- 1:42Speaker 2: of browse to see what people are saying, kind of
- 1:44Speaker 2: like it's kind of funny, you know, could people already,
- 1:47Speaker 2: you know, after the first series go here we go,
- 1:49Speaker 2: didn't believe them, they suck, you know all that stuff.
- 1:51Speaker 2: I just think it's kind of funny. But we'll see
- 1:54Speaker 2: what talk Raiders like this week of course for more laughs.
- 1:57Speaker 2: But yeah, look there are some good signs. Barclay was
- 2:00Speaker 2: really good. Fact the long run, he made something out
- 2:04Speaker 2: of nothing because the guy got in the backfield and
- 2:06Speaker 2: also on the touchdown he also did it on his
- 2:09Speaker 2: own in a way. He was really good the run game.
- 2:12Speaker 2: Look at the run game the last three weeks has
- 2:14Speaker 2: been better. It's nowhere close to last year. That's okay.
- 2:16Speaker 2: They have what they have. They had some mental breakdowns,
- 2:20Speaker 2: I would say in the game on the offensive line,
- 2:23Speaker 2: just communication, pass protection at tons of spotty. Hurts made
- 2:29Speaker 2: some really good throws that passed it got it was
- 2:31Speaker 2: an absolute dime, great touchdown pass. In fact, it's many
- 2:35Speaker 2: dropped a big one and then he caught one in
- 2:37Speaker 2: the first half. But it hurts his playing better. Now
- 2:42Speaker 2: we know the tape will tell us. Sometimes we're not
- 2:44Speaker 2: always right when we feel that we're watching the game,
- 2:46Speaker 2: but we'll tape. We'll have the show with grec O
- 2:48Speaker 2: Sellton inside the tape and we'll see what that really
- 2:52Speaker 2: looks like. But he did make some good throws. And
- 2:54Speaker 2: the thing you can't tell off television is and I
- 2:57Speaker 2: there's no way to know, is what happens when Hurts
- 3:00Speaker 2: moves from the pocket or he decides to hold onto
- 3:04Speaker 2: the ball. And you don't know if it's was the
- 3:07Speaker 2: guy where the target's getting open, or is it on
- 3:09Speaker 2: the quarterback. We just don't know. So we'll find that out.
- 3:11Speaker 2: But overall, look, they scored twenty nine points. It wasn't
- 3:14Speaker 2: the most conventional way of doing it. It was an
- 3:17Speaker 2: odd game. And you mentioned it that the one super
- 3:20Speaker 2: negative is Jake Elliotto just to struggle. This is not good. Now.
- 3:25Speaker 2: I know we're gonna we're gonna be asked us. They
- 3:26Speaker 2: haven't done it yet, we've looked into it. They've not
- 3:28Speaker 2: brought anyone into to try out as a kicker. They
- 3:31Speaker 2: have done a punter, but that was more of a
- 3:34Speaker 2: per cup. That was more for they want to get
- 3:36Speaker 2: a left footed punter to look it and get his
- 3:38Speaker 2: tape see how the spin comes off of the football
- 3:40Speaker 2: in a workout, because they're going to play a left handed,
- 3:43Speaker 2: left kit footed punter, not handed idiot, but yeah it
- 3:48Speaker 2: could be. Yeah, you never know that. That's right, you
- 3:50Speaker 2: never know, but that that that is so that the
- 3:52Speaker 2: we just gave you the positives. We'll get to the
- 3:54Speaker 2: defense also later in the show. But the one negative
- 3:57Speaker 2: is the kicker. And and it's to get to the
- 4:00Speaker 2: point that we kind of saw in this game where
- 4:03Speaker 2: the head coach is going to say, Okay, do I
- 4:05Speaker 2: want to go for it? Because I don't trust my kicker.
- 4:08Speaker 2: You want to show him confidence and let him kick.
- 4:11Speaker 2: I don't know but that's not something you need when
- 4:13Speaker 2: you're heading to the playoffs with, by the way, called
- 4:14Speaker 2: weather coming on.
- 4:16Speaker 1: Yeah, and you also don't need you don't need any
- 4:19Speaker 1: of your players at the bottom of an eight player
- 4:22Speaker 1: scrum like tyler Stein was when that brawl broke out,
- 4:25Speaker 1: and I got to say, I don't believe, just my
- 4:28Speaker 1: personal feeling, that your kicker struggles. If that's the reason
- 4:31Speaker 1: that he went for two there, because he wouldn't want
- 4:34Speaker 1: to put his kicker on the field, that's terrible. You
- 4:37Speaker 1: don't do that in a game that's over against your
- 4:40Speaker 1: division rivals who you have a history of brawling against constantly.
- 4:44Speaker 1: It made them mad, they felt disrespected. Then the fight
- 4:47Speaker 1: starts out, and then it got really ugly, and again
- 4:49Speaker 1: tyler Stein wound up at the bottom of a pile
- 4:51Speaker 1: where it looked like six commanders and Tyler Steen that
- 4:54Speaker 1: was unnecessary. Just kick the kick the field goal and
- 4:56Speaker 1: if you misses, no, or kick the kick the pat
- 5:00Speaker 1: If he misses, he's already been missing. It's not you're
- 5:03Speaker 1: harming him more. If he makes it, at least you
- 5:04Speaker 1: get him in the river. I'm seeing the ball through
- 5:06Speaker 1: the uprights.
- 5:07Speaker 2: Yes, I here's the thing. And it's sort of what
- 5:10Speaker 2: you're saying. I'm not sure if you meant it the
- 5:11Speaker 2: way I'm going to say it. But you're also taking
- 5:13Speaker 2: a chance of running an offensive play like getting so
- 5:16Speaker 2: un hurt unnecessary. You have the game's over, Okay, they're
- 5:20Speaker 2: not coming back. There's zero chance.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Correct.
- 5:23Speaker 2: I would have just kicked the ball just so I
- 5:24Speaker 2: don't have to put my offense out there. I don't
- 5:27Speaker 2: agree with it. Yeah, I didn't like it. When if
- 5:29Speaker 2: you remember Sirianni put Dickerson back in and that that practice,
- 5:34Speaker 2: that night practice, that's twenty have the ministus with twenty hearts,
- 5:37Speaker 2: Minisca's and trim. Don't do that. Don't don't do something unnecessary.
- 5:43Speaker 2: It's just not needed. You know, you just foolish point.
- 5:46Speaker 2: I didn't see the point of that. But but let
- 5:49Speaker 2: me ask you this question because we're gonna because I
- 5:50Speaker 2: know fans. The couple of guys they played tennis with
- 5:54Speaker 2: brought this up to me, which I thought was very
- 5:56Speaker 2: fair when they beat the Raiders, actually prior to the
- 5:58Speaker 2: Raider game, the better when convince this is a typical
- 6:01Speaker 2: fan reaction, but I thought it was fair though, because
- 6:04Speaker 2: we didn't know quite how bad. The raters were. We
- 6:05Speaker 2: knew they were bad, but not quite until we watched
- 6:07Speaker 2: the game and got all the information. But the feeling
- 6:12Speaker 2: around some of the fans was, Okay, they better win.
- 6:14Speaker 2: Convinced go over a bad football team. They did. This
- 6:19Speaker 2: was a sloppy game. This is just it wasn't like
- 6:22Speaker 2: they had a lot of penalties. But it just like
- 6:25Speaker 2: you said, Washington was up at halftime ten to seven.
- 6:29Speaker 2: It's kind of ugly. Defense is playing fine. I mean,
- 6:33Speaker 2: Jackson gave up. They isolated Jackson in coverage with McLaurin.
- 6:36Speaker 2: You had to figure that was going to happen at
- 6:37Speaker 2: some point. But overall the defense was fine, played very well.
- 6:42Speaker 2: Though I would bring this up the pressure in the
- 6:45Speaker 2: first half, don't let the pressure numbers fool you in
- 6:48Speaker 2: the second half. Josh Johnson camp, He's just he's a
- 6:50Speaker 2: third string quarterback. It's just what he is, you know.
- 6:54Speaker 2: And Mariota got hurt. He hurt his right hand. But yeah,
- 6:58Speaker 2: I was kind of because with Brandon Coleman wanted getting
- 7:00Speaker 2: hurt the kid of filling for tunsl But I felt
- 7:04Speaker 2: like they were not getting to Mariota as much as
- 7:06Speaker 2: I thought they went the first half.
- 7:07Speaker 1: I agree with you. I felt pass rush was sporadic
- 7:11Speaker 1: and I thought it would be better. You had a
- 7:13Speaker 1: nice one from Brandon Graham got a sack. There were
- 7:16Speaker 1: a couple of times you made Mariota dance around the
- 7:20Speaker 1: pocket and scramble. So it wasn't terrible, but there were
- 7:23Speaker 1: also times where I thought, not only he, but even
- 7:26Speaker 1: on the interception Josh Johnson threw, which was about as
- 7:29Speaker 1: bad of a ball they went on TV, and you
- 7:31Speaker 1: had a great flood concept on the left side of
- 7:33Speaker 1: the field. You had three different guys were open. I
- 7:35Speaker 1: don't know why you throw it to the right side
- 7:37Speaker 1: of the field, but he had a lot of time
- 7:39Speaker 1: against an offensive line that we said is going to
- 7:41Speaker 1: be is better than people think. But again left tackle
- 7:45Speaker 1: fill in Brandon Coleman. It just felt to me like
- 7:48Speaker 1: they should have dominated up front a little more. I
- 7:50Speaker 1: know Washington runs the ball well, and so it didn't
- 7:53Speaker 1: surprise me that they had some decent runs. That's okay,
- 7:56Speaker 1: and of course you're going to get a pass play
- 7:58Speaker 1: here and there. Again, that game was kind of close.
- 8:01Speaker 1: They were losing at halftime and close in the third quarter,
- 8:04Speaker 1: and it really took Josh Johnson getting into the game
- 8:08Speaker 1: for the Eagles to pull away. So if you were
- 8:10Speaker 1: looking for style points, if you're looking for a statement,
- 8:13Speaker 1: if you were looking for a true turn of the corner,
- 8:15Speaker 1: I think you're still now thinking. I will look to
- 8:19Speaker 1: the Bills game for that because I'm gonna ge be
- 8:21Speaker 1: fair with this. As soon as Josh Johnson got into
- 8:23Speaker 1: the game, I feel like the evaluation stops. There was
- 8:27Speaker 1: no chance, and even the long runs for Saquon and
- 8:31Speaker 1: Bigsby at the end, I mean, that's now a Washington
- 8:34Speaker 1: defense that's a not good to begin with. But be
- 8:36Speaker 1: back on the field like way too much in the
- 8:38Speaker 1: fourth quarter because now they're not moving the ball with
- 8:41Speaker 1: Josh Johnson offensively. So I'm not saying I'm not trying
- 8:43Speaker 1: to take credit away from the Eagles in the run game,
- 8:46Speaker 1: but to me, it did coincide all those big runs
- 8:49Speaker 1: with it being the fourth quarter, the Commanders on their
- 8:52Speaker 1: third string quarterback and just not moving the ball at all.
- 8:54Speaker 2: Yeah, Josh Johnson, Just so folks know, you know Will Griers,
- 8:58Speaker 2: I think he might be with Dallas Eagle quarterback. Yeah,
- 9:02Speaker 2: really smart guy, that's why he still like I've talked
- 9:04Speaker 2: to coaches who work with and they love the guy.
- 9:05Speaker 2: He's just it's kind of like Donnas Haslam if you
- 9:10Speaker 2: follow the NBA's it's just a really good dude who
- 9:13Speaker 2: you really like to have around your your your players.
- 9:15Speaker 2: He's just a positive guys, really smart Mike what's that right,
- 9:23Speaker 2: may coach? Who knows josh Otzi. I don't know what
- 9:25Speaker 2: he wants to do since he's been in the league.
- 9:26Speaker 2: Oh wait since a wait but flat Coast draft. But
- 9:29Speaker 2: bottom line is they won the game. They they've now
- 9:33Speaker 2: won the most division championship since so for they won that.
- 9:35Speaker 2: This is their eighth The Cowboys of seven is the
- 9:40Speaker 2: second most. But the Kava Squors are terrible in the
- 9:42Speaker 2: playoffs as we know, but they're not making it this year.
- 9:44Speaker 2: They got eliminated. The only way they could have gotten
- 9:46Speaker 2: in is if they won the division, which was never
- 9:47Speaker 2: going to happen. But the bottom line is they won
- 9:50Speaker 2: the game. Also, uh and then we'll get in the
- 9:54Speaker 2: meat of this thing in a minute, but you will
- 9:56Speaker 2: Shipley had that two bad plays. He's generally pretty sure handed,
- 9:59Speaker 2: but that was bad. And then he had the he
- 10:02Speaker 2: just screwed, you know, he just kind of it was indecisive.
- 10:06Speaker 2: On another return, so that he's got to clean that up.
- 10:09Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean outside of one play, which was a
- 10:11Speaker 1: nice forty nine yard punt by Braden Man that ended
- 10:14Speaker 1: with Sidney Brown making an excellent tackle on whoever the
- 10:18Speaker 1: returner was, I can't remember his name. Outside of that,
- 10:20Speaker 1: Chris Moore, I think the receiver. Yeah, I think right
- 10:25Speaker 1: outside of that one individual punt and punt coverage tackle.
- 10:29Speaker 1: Special teams was a disaster all the way around, from
- 10:31Speaker 1: your from the fumble to the other hesitating taking the
- 10:34Speaker 1: ball out of the end zone and only getting to
- 10:36Speaker 1: the nineteen as you just mentioned was Shipley. It was
- 10:39Speaker 1: just it was not a good game for Eagles special teams.
- 10:41Speaker 1: And that's the kind of stuff that will and can
- 10:43Speaker 1: hurt you in the postseason. And so they've got to
- 10:45Speaker 1: make sure that that. I'm more worried about the kicking
- 10:49Speaker 1: right now than know the decisions and the fumble because
- 10:51Speaker 1: some of that just happens, but you're kicking. They've got
- 10:54Speaker 1: to get that. I mean, this is the I mean,
- 10:55Speaker 1: he went from Jake to make to mister automatic to
- 10:59Speaker 1: I think you just kind of holding your breath every
- 11:01Speaker 1: time he lines up to kick a field goal, and
- 11:03Speaker 1: you cannot go into the playoffs with that kind of
- 11:05Speaker 1: reluctance about your kicker.
- 11:07Speaker 2: It's just lack of confidence right now. But it was
- 11:09Speaker 2: it was actually Jalen Lane missing right lane. Yeah but yeah,
- 11:13Speaker 2: he he was one for zero yards. But you know,
- 11:15Speaker 2: actually Chris Moore was the one who was He got
- 11:17Speaker 2: all the kickoff returns off five of them. Yeah it
- 11:20Speaker 2: let's put it this way. Bradman has been phenomenal. He
- 11:23Speaker 2: should be a pro bowler. Their their kickoff returns have
- 11:26Speaker 2: been decent, not great. Cove he's been fine since he's
- 11:28Speaker 2: been back. But this Jkli thing is a kind of
- 11:31Speaker 2: a crisis right now. It is. I mean, it's just
- 11:33Speaker 2: it is. It's not very good. But let's let's get
- 11:36Speaker 2: started with offense as we kind of take an overview.
- 11:40Speaker 2: I like it boy again and it's good to see
- 11:44Speaker 2: a J. Brown. Yes, they hate caught some outside of
- 11:46Speaker 2: the numbers, some some inside the numbers. DeVante was active,
- 11:50Speaker 2: Goddar scored another touchdown. I believe it's tenth of the season.
- 11:54Speaker 2: Now we'll we'll look at what we'll see what the
- 11:56Speaker 2: tape looks like. But it seemed like me to me
- 11:58Speaker 2: because Lotso was out with the stinger. But that's a
- 12:00Speaker 2: shame that you got to be careful with that because
- 12:03Speaker 2: he took his normal reps on Thursday, which was the
- 12:05Speaker 2: last practice, and he obviously didn't feel right because he
- 12:08Speaker 2: didn't he was inactive. And they don't have anyone else
- 12:11Speaker 2: would block other than than lot Too and Gotdard so E. J.
- 12:14Speaker 2: Jenkins is a former receiver. They had nowhere else to go.
- 12:17Speaker 2: They had to use another tight end. But and you
- 12:21Speaker 2: saw Kylon Granted in there, but Goddard, I'm thinking, was
- 12:26Speaker 2: probably not in past routes as much as he would
- 12:28Speaker 2: be because a Lot two didn't play. And we actually,
- 12:31Speaker 2: it's funny we saw not that it mattered because Barkley
- 12:34Speaker 2: still had a good run, but Goddard had he had
- 12:37Speaker 2: that one of those cross cross blocks like they used
- 12:40Speaker 2: a lot Too as a off set fullback. They actually
- 12:43Speaker 2: had got a deal. When I look at my notes there,
- 12:45Speaker 2: I thought, oh that was interesting. But overall they got
- 12:50Speaker 2: some good things done on offense. It's certainly not bad.
- 12:53Speaker 2: Hurts was fairly accurate, made some really good throws. Past
- 12:58Speaker 2: protection was more good than bad. But we have to
- 13:01Speaker 2: find out what what it looks like overall. But your
- 13:04Speaker 2: overall offensively. I'm encouraged because Barkley's coming on here, and
- 13:09Speaker 2: but he came into a some juice And how about
- 13:11Speaker 2: I got to mention our guy Tank bigs be holy smokes.
- 13:14Speaker 2: You want to talk about a change up? Have you
- 13:15Speaker 2: seen a guy who was such a different style than
- 13:17Speaker 2: the story? That's what a change up is. Holy smokes.
- 13:20Speaker 1: I mean, I just goes back to what we've been
- 13:22Speaker 1: saying for a while, like, you can give this guy
- 13:23Speaker 1: a series. It's not gonna hurt. Did you hear the
- 13:26Speaker 1: first thing Saquon Barkley said in his postgame interview with
- 13:29Speaker 1: with Fox with how awesome it was to see tank
- 13:32Speaker 1: it in there and rip a runoff. And I don't know,
- 13:34Speaker 1: I think of other like I think of other teams
- 13:39Speaker 1: that have bonifide number one running backs, like the Packers
- 13:42Speaker 1: with Josh Jacobs. They will put Emmanuel Lewis in there
- 13:46Speaker 1: for a drive Like it's not Emmanuel Manuel Wilson. Yeah,
- 13:52Speaker 1: Lewis is a little bit of the child actor from
- 13:55Speaker 1: the Age Oh God, I can't even remember what was
- 13:58Speaker 1: the name of the show.
- 13:59Speaker 2: What was his webster?
- 14:01Speaker 1: Webster, Yes, Webster. I really liked that.
- 14:04Speaker 2: Late Alex Carris was.
- 14:06Speaker 1: On the show. Yes, yes, so football, how about that?
- 14:08Speaker 1: Bringing it back to football? But my point is I
- 14:10Speaker 1: think you can get Bigsby more opportunities and that just
- 14:14Speaker 1: helps keep Saquon fresh. And they don't do that for
- 14:17Speaker 1: whatever reason, I don't. I don't know if it's because
- 14:19Speaker 1: they're worried about how Saquon would feel about it, or
- 14:22Speaker 1: they just want to get Saquon going, but they certainly
- 14:24Speaker 1: can if they want to, and I think be effective
- 14:27Speaker 1: by giving Bigsby a series just to see how it goes.
- 14:30Speaker 2: Yeah again, No, I think your first point the former
- 14:35Speaker 2: on Barclay because you do want to get him going,
- 14:37Speaker 2: and he's really getting himself going. Yeah with this line
- 14:41Speaker 2: that still looks beat up a little bit, but they
- 14:44Speaker 2: got the job done. It again, anytime you could take
- 14:46Speaker 2: your quarterback out and you're winning, you know it's a
- 14:47Speaker 2: good thing. You're up pretty big, so you got to
- 14:49Speaker 2: feel pretty good about that. Hey.
- 14:50Speaker 1: I still like a good night out, but I'm not
- 14:53Speaker 1: always in the mood to drink. And that's why I
- 14:56Speaker 1: looked for a great alternative and I found one. It's

- 18:29Speaker 1: great prices, and an experience made for Philly fans twenty
- 18:32Speaker 1: one and up. So I wanted to talk about the
- 18:35Speaker 1: past game because I think, I think, I think I'm
- 18:39Speaker 1: encouraged by how much they are living right now in
- 18:44Speaker 1: spread empty, which has been going on. It started a
- 18:47Speaker 1: couple of weeks ago, but it's really picked up over
- 18:49Speaker 1: the last two weeks. And it looked to me and
- 18:53Speaker 1: again we have to take everything with a but you're
- 18:56Speaker 1: facing one of the worst defenses in the league viewpoint.
- 18:58Speaker 1: But nonetheless, just from an Eagles vantage point, I thought
- 19:01Speaker 1: Jalen Hurts look for the most part, pretty decisive, pretty
- 19:06Speaker 1: willing to make some throws in the windows. And we
- 19:08Speaker 1: talk about this with Greg Cosel. When you go spread empty,
- 19:11Speaker 1: you make a defense declaire a little bit more, and
- 19:14Speaker 1: you also provide opportunities to get rid of the ball
- 19:16Speaker 1: quickly because you don't have any back in for protection,
- 19:19Speaker 1: you don't have a tight end, and you're running a
- 19:21Speaker 1: spread offense, the ball's got to be bang, bang, bang,
- 19:23Speaker 1: and it's a timing and rhythm kind of offense. And
- 19:26Speaker 1: for the most part, I thought it looked pretty good
- 19:28Speaker 1: and I thought Jalen Hurts did a nice job. But
- 19:32Speaker 1: there's something about how that's not really them. It's never
- 19:37Speaker 1: been them, it's just suddenly become an preference for them
- 19:41Speaker 1: to do. That makes me wonder if this is enduring, survivable, sustainable,
- 19:48Speaker 1: because that's really not their mo ordinarily. And I remember
- 19:53Speaker 1: looking at halftime, they were still zero for three on
- 19:56Speaker 1: third down attempts. At halftime, they'd only put ten points
- 19:59Speaker 1: on the board. It should have been thirteen. I mean
- 20:01Speaker 1: you could argue it should have been sixteen because of
- 20:03Speaker 1: the two missed field goals. I know he missed three,
- 20:05Speaker 1: but he missed two on the same drive, so it's
- 20:07Speaker 1: it's six points he took away.
- 20:09Speaker 2: Yeah, one didn't count.
- 20:11Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, a fifty two yarder these days for him
- 20:15Speaker 1: is not automatic. So he definitely took three away. I
- 20:17Speaker 1: mean he should have made the first one.
- 20:19Speaker 2: Yeah, and remember he pushed both left.
- 20:21Speaker 1: Yeah, they're all three of them exactly sick. Yeah, very
- 20:25Speaker 1: very odd. But my point is I like what it's
- 20:28Speaker 1: doing for the offense. I like that it's giving Jillen
- 20:30Speaker 1: Hurts options. They certainly were probably I think they were
- 20:33Speaker 1: more pass heavy. I didn't look at the numbers they
- 20:35Speaker 1: were first half. Yeah than normal, but I do I
- 20:38Speaker 1: just when you took it, when you're looking at it
- 20:40Speaker 1: from a bigger view, I just wonder like, are they
- 20:43Speaker 1: getting away from who they are and what they do
- 20:46Speaker 1: and will that come back to bite them? And it's
- 20:48Speaker 1: really hard to evaluate when you're playing the Commanders how
- 20:51Speaker 1: effective it is. But I will say this, we've called
- 20:53Speaker 1: for being more innovative. You need to defreshen things up,
- 20:57Speaker 1: you need to do things new, and from that point,
- 20:59Speaker 1: they're checking box. I really do think Jalen made some
- 21:01Speaker 1: really nice throws from that spread empty, and he looks
- 21:05Speaker 1: comfortable in it. And then when they go under center,
- 21:08Speaker 1: I think that even helps them more because it's a
- 21:10Speaker 1: completely different look in formation and they can do anything
- 21:13Speaker 1: from there.
- 21:14Speaker 2: Yeah, it seemed like it was. Yeah, I wasn't charting
- 21:16Speaker 2: how many times he was under center, But other than
- 21:18Speaker 2: tush push, I didn't see much at all.
- 21:20Speaker 1: Oh, they ran a couple of play boot boot play
- 21:22Speaker 1: actions off of under Center.
- 21:23Speaker 2: Okay, Okay, I just didn't see much. Obviously, it's way
- 21:26Speaker 2: down from last week. Yeah, you know, look, they want
- 21:29Speaker 2: they want, they want spread empty. The gun run was
- 21:33Speaker 2: actually something they didn't really do. Actually, threw it out
- 21:35Speaker 2: of it because they've done a lot of gun runs
- 21:36Speaker 2: and uh and spread with five out five eligibles. So yeah,
- 21:41Speaker 2: it's generally a change up for them, but it's coming
- 21:43Speaker 2: into more prominence now. In fact, they did it on
- 21:45Speaker 2: my notes here. It looks like they did on a
- 21:47Speaker 2: third series the first like four places. I was like, wow,
- 21:49Speaker 2: this is he's actually And by the way, SCRAMs were good.
- 21:53Speaker 2: He looked. He looked fresh because we were it's the
- 21:56Speaker 2: left ankle that was not on the intro party clearly
- 21:58Speaker 2: turned it last week. But that was good. He looked fine.
- 22:01Speaker 2: In fact, he had a couple of nice first downs
- 22:03Speaker 2: on it, so that was good to see.
- 22:06Speaker 1: Yep.
- 22:06Speaker 2: But overall, I would agree with your assessment that there's
- 22:11Speaker 2: some encouraging signs they were more aggressive with the pass game.
- 22:14Speaker 2: Clearly they as a matter of fact, yeah, they hurts.
- 22:18Speaker 2: Attempted seventeen passes. Now, remember he had forced scrambles in
- 22:22Speaker 2: the first half. I'd have to look at those four
- 22:25Speaker 2: rushers were all dropbacks. If they were, that would have
- 22:27Speaker 2: been seventeen drop back they'd have been twenty one dropbacks. Hmm,
- 22:31Speaker 2: that's a lot in the first smokes. That's a lot.
- 22:34Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, and again, like we've said, hey, come out
- 22:36Speaker 1: throwing sometimes when it's there and the commanders are beat up.
- 22:40Speaker 1: I just you just wonder when a team gets like
- 22:42Speaker 1: far away from what it used to be that made
- 22:44Speaker 1: it great, Like are they getting too far away? But
- 22:46Speaker 1: that's listen. I'm encouraged. I'm more encouraged than i am discouraged.
- 22:49Speaker 1: I'm just more pensive. I guess I'm thinking, like what
- 22:52Speaker 1: does this mean long term? I don't want people to
- 22:54Speaker 1: listen to this and think, man, he goes just something
- 22:56Speaker 1: good and most you're sitting there beating them up. No, no, no,
- 22:58Speaker 1: not at all. I'm encourageged by this. The way they've
- 23:02Speaker 1: changed their offense and been able to acclimate to spread
- 23:05Speaker 1: empty it really does make things difficult on a defense.
- 23:07Speaker 1: And like you said, when you have five guys all
- 23:10Speaker 1: running routes taking a defense down, it does open up
- 23:12Speaker 1: Jalen hurts to be able to run the ball more.
- 23:14Speaker 1: So these things are all good. I just it's just
- 23:17Speaker 1: a reconciliation of that versus that's not what they normally do.
- 23:19Speaker 1: And then on the stat sheet in the first half,
- 23:21Speaker 1: it just it didn't manifest into more points than you
- 23:24Speaker 1: thought it would have because of the way they moved
- 23:26Speaker 1: the ball. So they will, I'm sure, continue it against
- 23:29Speaker 1: the Bills, and well we'll get another evaluation of it.
- 23:32Speaker 2: And they're not strong at corner either, like Washington's starting.
- 23:34Speaker 2: A bunch of backups at corner played it. I mean
- 23:37Speaker 2: sant Rastil could play nickel, he could play corner, but
- 23:41Speaker 2: Jonathan Jones has been a backup for them. He was
- 23:44Speaker 2: playing big Mahogany who got the penalty. That was a
- 23:46Speaker 2: bad penalty. I agree with Greg Olsen.
- 23:49Speaker 1: I agree. I didn't think that was a penalty.
- 23:51Speaker 2: That was bad. Come on, that was bad. But I
- 23:55Speaker 2: would just a couple more things to throw out here
- 23:57Speaker 2: or just discuss. That's a little bit good. And Jacob
- 24:00Speaker 2: Bartin I mentioned him on our pregame show. This guy's
- 24:03Speaker 2: been a true journeym out of Temple. By the way, yep,
- 24:06Speaker 2: I joked he was the thing eight years ago. I mean,
- 24:08Speaker 2: he he gave my lot of some problems. It's it's
- 24:15Speaker 2: I just don't know what he's not on the injury report.
- 24:18Speaker 2: I don't know what the issue is. We know Dickerson
- 24:20Speaker 2: is clearly not himself. Jergens is clearly not himself. Stein's
- 24:23Speaker 2: an average player. Fred Johnson is doing the best he can.
- 24:26Speaker 2: He had He hoped that guy on the penalty boys
- 24:28Speaker 2: at a hook, he basically want to show to die
- 24:33Speaker 2: for that penalty. But yeah, look, the offensive line clearly
- 24:36Speaker 2: not what it once was. But it's it's they're good
- 24:40Speaker 2: enough for them to move the football, because that's the
- 24:43Speaker 2: best point. And yes, Barkley's running the ball better. That's encouraging.
- 24:46Speaker 2: But as I said at the top of the show,
- 24:48Speaker 2: Barkley got a lot on his own. Let's be honest
- 24:50Speaker 2: about it.
- 24:51Speaker 1: He did, he did, but that you know, and again,
- 24:53Speaker 1: part of that is encouraging too. I know some people
- 24:54Speaker 1: were starting to think he wasn't a spry or he
- 24:57Speaker 1: didn't look as good. But you know, in general, I
- 25:01Speaker 1: think that you take it for what it's worth, but
- 25:04Speaker 1: it is not. I think that was the second most
- 25:05Speaker 1: rushing yards. Six point three per carry was good. And again,
- 25:08Speaker 1: Jalen hurts, I think this is the second straight game
- 25:11Speaker 1: of forty or more rushing yards. So for those like
- 25:14Speaker 1: us who said, hey, you know, get a little more
- 25:16Speaker 1: running or free, whether it's freelancer designed, that's a good thing.
- 25:20Speaker 1: The Eagles did average almost six yards per play, so
- 25:23Speaker 1: that is good. And then the penalties they had five
- 25:26Speaker 1: for sixty one. We talked about them. That's still an
- 25:29Speaker 1: issue to me. They're just not a completely clean operation.
- 25:32Speaker 1: They they're just not and they haven't been really been
- 25:35Speaker 1: all a year. And maybe some of that is having
- 25:37Speaker 1: the backups in. I don't know, you know, like you said,
- 25:39Speaker 1: when you go from Lane Johnson to Fred Johnson, you're
- 25:41Speaker 1: going to get more holdings and more false starts than
- 25:44Speaker 1: you ordinarily would get.
- 25:46Speaker 2: Yeah, now I say that they ran for over two
- 25:48Speaker 2: hundred yards, so but again Barkley had the long run
- 25:52Speaker 2: was pretty much him because he could have been tackled
- 25:55Speaker 2: for a loss there or at least knocked down. And
- 25:58Speaker 2: then it Bigsby that he is. I know he breaks
- 26:01Speaker 2: almost everything outside, but man he is. He's explosive. Man.
- 26:06Speaker 2: He's a perfect change up to Barkley, and it works
- 26:09Speaker 2: really well. The only thing, you know, one thing. We
- 26:12Speaker 2: haven't really talked about this in probably a couple of months.
- 26:15Speaker 1: Mm hmm uh.
- 26:16Speaker 2: They don't. They just don't call screen passes anymore. There
- 26:19Speaker 2: were a couple of years where we would cry about it.
- 26:22Speaker 2: I just because they don't run it. We probably forgot
- 26:25Speaker 2: about it, and I just wish they would Shipley was
- 26:28Speaker 2: in there. I'd have to look if him a checkdown
- 26:31Speaker 2: or not. But they just don't have any screens. It's
- 26:33Speaker 2: a shame.
- 26:34Speaker 1: I just think they don't trust the block. I mean,
- 26:37Speaker 1: I don't know for the outside screens. I don't think
- 26:39Speaker 1: they trust the blocking from the receivers and for the
- 26:42Speaker 1: inside ones. The way the offensive line has been used
- 26:44Speaker 1: this year, I think that they're just not even going
- 26:46Speaker 1: that route.
- 26:47Speaker 2: Ye, that's fair. I just but honestly, they really were.
- 26:50Speaker 1: Oh I'm not saying I agree with it. I'm just
- 26:51Speaker 1: saying no.
- 26:53Speaker 2: To start the season, Remember they could, they would literally
- 26:56Speaker 2: would not. They would not run outside, and we look
- 26:58Speaker 2: what is wrong with them? What this is? When Cosell
- 27:02Speaker 2: brought it up, he said, guys, if you notice this,
- 27:04Speaker 2: because we're trying to get here at NFL Films, and
- 27:08Speaker 2: it was maybe like two outside runs a game, which
- 27:11Speaker 2: is absurd or sometimes less. And now it's like they
- 27:14Speaker 2: don't do any screen passes, which you would have to
- 27:16Speaker 2: think it's because their offensive line. But the bottom line
- 27:18Speaker 2: is they won. They'll play at Buffalo early called for
- 27:22Speaker 2: some snow. We'll see what the forecast looks. Like as
- 27:25Speaker 2: the week progresses, but they won. As you said at
- 27:27Speaker 2: the top, here these Washington you said it during our
- 27:30Speaker 2: pregame Shore these Washington Eagle games. What was your score?
- 27:34Speaker 1: By the way, my score was twenty six twenty eagles?
- 27:38Speaker 1: What was it? Okay?
- 27:38Speaker 2: So yeah, what's funny because I was texted with a
- 27:42Speaker 2: friend of mine who was twenty twenty six ten. I'm like,
- 27:45Speaker 2: oh great, let's let's let them. Let them take the
- 27:48Speaker 2: extra point hint Elliott, make it and then'll be it.
- 27:51Speaker 2: Then they went for two. I'm like, don't make it,
- 27:52Speaker 2: don't make it. No, I'm not. I was just laughing.
- 27:56Speaker 2: But look overall, I would be more encouraged then discouraged.
- 28:01Speaker 1: Mm hmm.
- 28:03Speaker 2: Now you want to say, I know some people think
- 28:05Speaker 2: that sometimes you play down on the opponent. I mean,
- 28:08Speaker 2: there's it's a subjective response. How would we know that?
- 28:12Speaker 2: But the bottom line is the first half it didn't
- 28:14Speaker 2: look good, but they persevered. They got the job done.
- 28:16Speaker 1: Bottom line, Yeah, we'll have to wait and see on
- 28:19Speaker 1: n Kobe Dean he obviously, and that's that's a huge loss, man.
- 28:23Speaker 1: That's if it winds up being longer, that's that could
- 28:26Speaker 1: be big. Now you saw John Campbell come in, had
- 28:28Speaker 1: a nice sim pressure this is this is right. It
- 28:32Speaker 1: was a third down. He drew a hole. Yeah, he
- 28:35Speaker 1: drew a hold. It was a nice sim He doesn't
- 28:37Speaker 1: really rock a running back the way Nikobe Dean does,
- 28:41Speaker 1: but I mean very few linebackers in the NFL did do.
- 28:44Speaker 1: But he'll learn. But he came in. They did not implode,
- 28:48Speaker 1: so that was good. He got some snaps and that
- 28:50Speaker 1: was really kind of like the turning point. They get
- 28:52Speaker 1: the third down stop to open the half and then
- 28:55Speaker 1: the Eagles come down take advantage of that really kind
- 28:57Speaker 1: of bocus penalty and in my opinion that they called
- 29:01Speaker 1: and then they threw a beautiful Hurts did throw a
- 29:03Speaker 1: beautiful third down, third and long touchdown Dallas Goddard. I
- 29:06Speaker 1: mean it was really nice. And then right then then
- 29:11Speaker 1: then Josh Johnson's in the game, and next thing you know,
- 29:13Speaker 1: Cooper to gen is picking them off. And then after
- 29:15Speaker 1: that it was there was just no threat to me. Again.
- 29:18Speaker 2: Yeah, these thirds, there's some He's a nice guy. And again,
- 29:22Speaker 2: I told you what what I've heard from other coaches
- 29:24Speaker 2: over the years, but he's just I remember when there
- 29:27Speaker 2: was a little buzz with him, very on his career
- 29:29Speaker 2: of Tampa Bay and then he came into play and
- 29:32Speaker 2: you could see it stairs at past Targets doesn't know
- 29:35Speaker 2: where to go to the football and it just it's
- 29:37Speaker 2: it's so ugly. This game is really bad. You know,
- 29:40Speaker 2: you're just like like, if you're of the Eagles, you
- 29:43Speaker 2: just want to you want to win. You want you
- 29:45Speaker 2: want to make this guy's life miserable. They did and
- 29:47Speaker 2: they won. The defense is really good. Yeah, I mean
- 29:51Speaker 2: the first half they were watching out some good runs
- 29:53Speaker 2: against them, but as we saw against the Chargers, first
- 29:57Speaker 2: couple series of Marion Hampton moving well, then they shut
- 30:00Speaker 2: him down.
- 30:01Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 30:02Speaker 2: By the way, they've done this without Jalen Carr. That's
- 30:04Speaker 2: incredibly impressive.
- 30:05Speaker 1: It is. It really is. Well. It'd be interesting to
- 30:09Speaker 1: see if they can get him back for Buffalo. If
- 30:11Speaker 1: Lane comes back for Buffalo. Obviously, if they don't have
- 30:14Speaker 1: Nikobe Dink that hurts a little bit. So there's a
- 30:17Speaker 1: lot to be determined here in this week coming up,
- 30:19Speaker 1: and that's a big game against the Bills coming up.
- 30:22Speaker 1: But the hard part is over. The Eagles are in.
- 30:24Speaker 1: They are NFC East champs, and that's all that matters
- 30:28Speaker 1: at this point. That's gonna do it. For this episode
- 30:32Speaker 1: of the Inside the Birds postgame show for Adam Kaplan,
- 30:35Speaker 1: I'm Jeff Mosher catch all on the next one.
