- 0:00What's up guys? Welcome to Three Up Three Down
- 0:02live from YouTube. That's right, we are filming
- 0:06horizontally sideways with Airpods for audio quality.
- 0:10Shout out to Charlie Marlowe for giving me the opportunity to
- 0:13take over his channel for an instant reaction to an
- 0:16incredible series win over the Brewers.
- 0:19As always to my loyal followers, you know we're going to do 3 ups
- 0:24and three downs and as always we are starting with the downs, our
- 0:29first down and this is an up and a down.
- 0:31Paul Goldschmidt has been hot. Before tonight's game he was
- 0:36basically up to league average in OPS again, which he has been
- 0:40sitting like around 650 all season.
- 0:42He is up to about 7:20 the last two weeks.
- 0:46He's hitting 438, he's slugging 729.
- 0:49He's got 2 homers, 8 double. SI think he had four opposite
- 0:52field double S against the Yankees.
- 0:54When he's going the other way, it means he's hitting.
- 0:59The problem for the Cardinals is what are they going to do with
- 1:02this? I know there was a report, I
- 1:06think in July from the post Dispatch that they were going to
- 1:10engage him on extensions and the fan base went crazy and then we
- 1:14haven't heard much about it since and he didn't really hit
- 1:17his way into an extension. Now it's September and now he's
- 1:20been hitting for a legitimate stretch.
- 1:22Obviously, there's still about a month left of the season.
- 1:24I'm curious to see how the rest of the season goes.
- 1:27The the thing that was interesting about Goldie most of
- 1:29the year was that he he's still hitting the ball hard.
- 1:33It's he's just whiffing like crazy.
- 1:35And it just feels like he was guessing a ton up at the plate.
- 1:39His approach it like he would just man, it felt like he took a
- 1:41fastball to the middle for strike three once a game.
- 1:45And it seems like he might just be getting a little luckier
- 1:46lately. I don't know, but it's good to
- 1:49see. But at the same time, can you
- 1:51extend a guy who's who's 36 years old, who's clearly
- 1:55declined the last two seasons? I mean, he obviously peaked in
- 1:5722 with the MVP. But like pretty much since like
- 1:59midpoint last year, it's gotten ugly.
- 2:04I don't think they're going to extend him.
- 2:06If they do, I hope it's a one year deal, maybe with like a
- 2:08club option or something. I do think he's going to keep
- 2:11playing. But yeah, my second down, JoJo
- 2:15Romero tonight, just bad luck, bad outing, first pitch to the
- 2:18inning. I mean, I hardly sat back down
- 2:20on my seat. Homer tie game, not fun, but as
- 2:26you guys know, they came out with a dub.
- 2:27My third down. Let's talk Alec Burleson, who
- 2:30had a great June and was was legitimately in the running for
- 2:33player of the month in June, which is a legit honor.
- 2:37Burley swings at everything I turn.
- 2:40You know, the the top of the 10th tonight, he comes up first
- 2:44two pitches out of the zone, whales out of whips, not whips,
- 2:47fouls both off. The problem with Burley is he
- 2:49thinks he can hit everything. He thinks everything is in his
- 2:53wheelhouse. It's not Burley.
- 2:56I I had to look up these super fancy stats on fake graphs.
- 2:59Burley is 17th in baseball in his his rate at swinging pitches
- 3:05out of the zone. So he swings in a ton of stuff
- 3:07out of the zone that's of unqualified hitters that is 5%
- 3:11higher than any other Cardinal. So one out of every 20 pitches
- 3:15out of the zone, Burley is swinging that no other Cardinal
- 3:18is swinging at It's and his his AB tonight in the top of the
- 3:2210th was just so brutal because he had one job.
- 3:25You have to get that runner over and he didn't.
- 3:28He popped out, which he never strikes out, which I guess is a
- 3:31positive, but man, he swings at everything.
- 3:34And then there's a really, really frustrating approach to
- 3:37watch. Let's get to the UPS.
- 3:40I want to talk Mason win and I want to talk NL rookie of the
- 3:43year. The NL rookie of the year is
- 3:46really interesting to me. Win never gets mentioned period.
- 3:49It's it's Imenaga. Over the course of the year,
- 3:52it's mostly been a lot of Imenaga on the Cubs.
- 3:54Yet skeens understandably, Marilyn, the Padres
- 3:57understandably a little bit of cheerio noise for the Brewers,
- 4:00who we saw play tonight. They walked him in the tent.
- 4:02So clearly the Cardinals know what this guy is about.
- 4:07I I I have a hard time understanding the difference
- 4:10between B war and F war, baseball reference war and fan
- 4:14grafts war and why they are so different.
- 4:16So what I did was I took those four guys and I averaged their
- 4:19two wars just to see what was up.
- 4:21And 1st is skeins at 4.2 when is tied with Merrill at 3.9 and
- 4:27then you have Cheerio at 3.6. I I just feel like Mason should
- 4:30be getting a little more credit for what he is doing at
- 4:33shortstop. Don't get me wrong, I understand
- 4:35Merrill has never played center field, but I think you need to
- 4:39watch win the throw tonight that he threw 97 miles an hour from
- 4:43180 feet from the plate that no other shortstop is making that
- 4:47throw in baseball. And and he did it.
- 4:50He saved a run doing that. So I don't know.
- 4:55You know, you want to get into the weeds a little bit.
- 4:56Skeins has thrown 114 innings this year.
- 4:59He's striking out 11 guys per nine.
- 5:00I mean, you guys saw the outing he had against Saint Louis in
- 5:02Pittsburgh. It was crazy.
- 5:04They have no chance against him. I mean, he looks like Garrett
- 5:06Cole. It's funny because I actually
- 5:09was was curious how those two compared and and they've
- 5:12actually had very similar rookie years.
- 5:16Cole came up a little bit later, but they both throw in about 120
- 5:19innings. Cole struck out fewer guys, but
- 5:21it 2013 was just a weird ERA baseball.
- 5:24We were still pitching to contact.
- 5:26His ERA was about 3.2. Skeens is 2.13.
- 5:29But that guy is really good to me, it's him.
- 5:33I mean, and maybe that's just because I've seen him just
- 5:35absolutely throttle the Cardinals twice this year.
- 5:39But he throws hard, he strikes everybody out.
- 5:43He's got a little bit of swag to him on the mound.
- 5:46I think the other guys, I, I just don't think the other guys
- 5:50really even have a case. In my opinion.
- 5:51If you wanted to knock Skeens, it would be the innings, 114
- 5:56innings. That's not a lot.
- 5:57And I do think the Pirates are going to shut him down soon.
- 5:59They're pretty much out of the race, so I'll be curious to see
- 6:02how that impacts his candidacy. The Padres have obviously been
- 6:05surging and Merrill has been hitting.
- 6:08He's got 21 homers, he's hitting 291, slugging 493.
- 6:12You know, but those three guys win.
- 6:15Merrill and Churio offensively, they're all in the same
- 6:18ballpark. Win hits for a little less
- 6:19power, but he's still going to end up with 15 homers.
- 6:22And then shortstop, you got to take that for a guy that's going
- 6:25to give you plus defense, especially as he gets better.
- 6:29You know, we forget Mason Wynn is really young.
- 6:31He's like 21 or 22 years old. He was drafted in 2020.
- 6:35So I I don't know, I think it's schemes to me.
- 6:37He averages 6 innings a start. The guy just dominates.
- 6:40The other three guys have been really good.
- 6:42But I think what I'm getting at here is Wynn needs to be talked
- 6:46about just a little bit more in these conversations.
- 6:48I saw Buck Showalter, there was a list I think of either, it was
- 6:51either the young shortstops or the young rookies in baseball
- 6:53and who he would take. And finally someone talked about
- 6:57Mason Wynn. Buck Showalter said he would
- 6:58take the shortstop, that's Mason Wynn.
- 7:00Mason Wynn is a great short stop.
- 7:01He's athletic. So we'll we'll see how the
- 7:04rookie of the year shakes out. I don't think Wynn will be a
- 7:06finalist, but I don't think that's right.
- 7:08I think he's top three. I think he should be in a
- 7:10virturia. My second up is Victor Scott.
- 7:14Been really happy with his progress.
- 7:16He has been hitting 282, slugging 462 over the last two
- 7:20weeks. He's got 3 steals.
- 7:22He needs to play. I get that Siani gives you a lot
- 7:25with the glove and they liked what he was doing offensively
- 7:27before he got hurt, but like, I still think the wild card is in
- 7:32reach, but realistically this team doesn't have a great chance
- 7:34of hanging on to the wild card. With that said, they need to see
- 7:38what they've got in the future. That's why you're seeing Burley
- 7:40play every day. That's why you're seeing Walker
- 7:41out there a lot. You know, Walker sat today, but
- 7:43it was his first sit since he came back up.
- 7:47Steven Matz is back. That's enough, obviously.
- 7:50And then the bullpen these last two nights was nails.
- 7:54Helsley last night, that might be his best outing of the year.
- 7:58He came in and with the first two guys no chance.
- 8:02And then Siani was like a weird turn of his wrist from ending
- 8:07the game and then he comes back out, which he's only pitched 2
- 8:10innings I think twice this year, both in Milwaukee.
- 8:13He blew it in the first inning and then got the save in the
- 8:16second inning. It's so impressive.
- 8:19Fernandez tonight, Holy cow. I I mean, I I was we were
- 8:23minutes from Fernandez being a down and he struck up a side the
- 8:28night and they walked. Cheerio smartly got to Hoskins
- 8:32and he got him on the slide piece slowing away.
- 8:35That was really impressive. You need outings like that if
- 8:37you're going to make the playoffs.
- 8:39You just need like weird wins and I'm going to get to that.
- 8:41But then, you know, Kent Ridge tonight nails 2 innings strong
- 8:45picked up for JoJo in a big way. You know, and one thing I love
- 8:50about baseball is these really weird wins, right?
- 8:52So they win last night in extras.
- 8:54And tonight, the three runs they score.
- 8:56They got two guys walked in in the first inning and then the
- 8:59third run was the the the extra runner in extra innings.
- 9:02So it isn't even an earned run to the pitcher.
- 9:04But you have to win games like that if you want to have a
- 9:07chance. So going forward, they got this
- 9:09Mariners this weekend, three against him.
- 9:11They go Fetty Gibson, Michaelis, you got to sweep them.
- 9:14Those guys can't score period, point blank.
- 9:17You have to sweep them if you want a chance.
- 9:19I think you lose this series and it it is probably over.
- 9:22I don't want to pull the playoff odds up because those change so
- 9:25much day-to-day. But yeah, guys, thank you guys,
- 9:29as always for watching. Let me know what you think
- 9:30below. And thanks again, Charlie, for
- 9:32the opportunity to do this on YouTube sideways.
