- 0:00Get up your box, killing yourself.
- 0:01I'm up an old man.
- 0:03Me back.
- 0:04That's it.
- 0:05You look like you're going to climb up a mountain.
- 0:08No, I'm just... A lot of insulation.
- 0:11Basically, I'm just...
- 0:12Mind, though, there's not an NFL badge on your arm.
- 0:15Yeah.
- 0:16Are you now blagging you're into the NFL as well?
- 0:19Now blagging.
- 0:20I am a huge Jets fan.
- 0:21Oh my God.
- 0:22To be fair, even I knew that.
- 0:24What is going on here?
- 0:26And we won our first game this weekend.
- 0:28Oh, stop it.
- 0:30And we?
- 0:30We?
- 0:32That's horrible.
- 0:33Oh my God.
- 0:37He's probably got a half and half scarf as well, hasn't he?
- 0:42Who's the Jets?
- 0:43Yeah, 100%.
- 0:46Oh, yeah.
- 0:46Do you know what?
- 0:47If I could get a Jets Everton scarf, I would.
- 0:49I'd be all over that.
- 0:51Don't you dare.
- 0:51Don't you dare, do you?
- 0:53I know your love for half and half scarfs.
- 0:55Oh, my word.
- 0:56What's going on?
- 0:57I mean, they shouldn't exist, should they?
- 1:00No, they should not.
- 1:01No, but I'm allowed to have interest in other sports.
- 1:04No, you're not.
- 1:06All right, okay.
- 1:07Sorry, I take it back then.
- 1:08No, you're not.
- 1:09Maybe a bit of boxing potentially now and then.
- 1:11Yeah, I was going to remind Tony that boxing is a different sport than football there.
- 1:17He doesn't even like boxing.
- 1:19He doesn't pay attention to it.
- 1:20He has no idea.
- 1:21I think he knows one or two people I've thought at the most.
- 1:25Probably forgot them, to be honest.
- 1:27See what I mean?
- 1:27Told you.
- 1:31Can't believe you're a Jets fan.
- 1:32Oh, my God.
- 1:33Well, you know what?
- 1:34I'm a Raiders fan.
- 1:36Oh, they're the hosies.
- 1:37I'm not a Raiders fan.
- 1:38I'm just taking the piss.
- 1:39You knew who they were, though.
- 1:41Of course I know the Raiders are.
- 1:43I've even got a black favourite player.
- 1:45Like a bit of Vegas, don't you?
- 1:46I've even got a black favourite player.
- 1:47And if you know anything about the NFL, who's the guy who's known for the Skittles?
- 1:54Skittles yeah Skittles he's my favourite player and you don't see you don't know do you so his parts are dead is he I'll give you I'll give you a clue he was brilliant for the Seahawks who's at the Raiders now
- 2:11It's not the guy who does all the good Russian stuff.
- 2:13See, you've got no idea.
- 2:14Oh, my God.
- 2:15He's... No.
- 2:16Marshawn Lynch.
- 2:18Ah, right.
- 2:18Okay, yeah.
- 2:19No, I wouldn't have got him.
- 2:20He's Skittles.
- 2:21I was going for the...
- 2:21I was going for Max...
- 2:22I was going to go for Max Crosby, the edge rusher.
- 2:25Here we go.
- 2:26Come on, let's talk about football.
- 2:27I'll tell what he's doing.
- 2:28Right, okay, yeah.
- 2:29Sorry, go on.
- 2:29Before we do, I saw that you guys were hanging out with royalty this week.
- 2:34We were.
- 2:36Yes, we was, yes.
- 2:37How was that?
- 2:37Leon fitted in perfectly.
- 2:39Being the Lord of Scam, Leon fitted in absolutely perfectly.
- 2:42It's all up for the prince.
- 2:45Now I'll have you know.
- 2:46Yeah, I didn't get to get invited by my own mum though.
- 2:54Tony only turned up because his mum made him.
- 2:56I got told by me and mother to go there.
- 3:00People were trying to get in touch with me from all different walks.
- 3:04I just don't really answer the phone to many people these days.
- 3:06I did tell my mum, you need to go.
- 3:10I think you should be going there.
- 3:12I was like, where mum?
- 3:13She was like, it's at Everton Stadium.
- 3:15I thought, well, Everton haven't actually contacted me to go.
- 3:18So I thought, well, that's the first sign that I shouldn't be there.
- 3:22And then I just thought, okay, well, better turn off, hadn't I?
- 3:25Because my mum is all bad.
- 3:27Yeah.
- 3:27So it's only the Prince of England, like?
- 3:29Listen, it was great to meet him, him and his wife.
- 3:31Well, Prince of Wales.
- 3:32He was brilliant.
- 3:34him and his wife were brilliant.
- 3:35It was a really good event, wasn't it?
- 3:37The most important thing is it was highlighting men's mental health and mental health for everybody across the workplace, just in all different sets and scenarios.
- 3:45I thought it was brilliant in what they were doing.
- 3:47Yeah, it wasn't just men's.
- 3:49It was just highlighting mental health and the fight to prevent suicides and...
- 3:55Campbell Hatton spoke, didn't he?
- 3:57Really, really well.
- 3:58He's a lovely kid, Campbell.
- 4:00Dame Kelly Holmes spoke.
- 4:03Dame Laura Kenny spoke up on stage alongside, obviously, different times than The Prince.
- 4:09So it was good to be in a room with all those people and hear their stories and try and relate, understand, realise that this could happen to anybody and to be aware of it.
- 4:22And if you are feeling...
- 4:25If you are feeling those kind of feelings, let somebody know.
- 4:29If you're a friend of somebody and you suspect that could be happening, that they're feeling down, they're unexpectedly in a bit of a rut, go and ask why.
- 4:38Go find out.
- 4:38So it's good to be a part of that event, and I'm sure and I hope it will help moving forward.
- 4:49An incredibly important message.
- 4:51Let's move on to football.
- 4:53We are six games now unbeaten, still.
- 4:56Everton versus Tottenham.
- 4:59Everton versus Tottenham, 0-0.
- 5:01To be fair, we were chatting saying it was going to be a draw.
- 5:04Where do you want to start with that game?
- 5:06What type of things were you intrigued by?
- 5:12The fact...
- 5:15I thought we defended well, but they started quite quickly.
- 5:19And yet, touch wood.
- 5:21I've got faith in us as a back four.
- 5:24I think Jarrod Brantway is an absolute Rolls Royce.
- 5:28Even when he's exposed 1v1 or he gets into certain positions, touch wood again.
- 5:33I'm not trying to jinx the lad for this weekend's game, but he always seems in control of the situation.
- 5:40And I love that.
- 5:41Mikhelenko had his best game.
- 5:43I think he got man of the match officially.
- 5:49probably not been heralded as a fantastic right back in his time.
- 5:54He's really stepped up so far this season.
- 5:56There's probably a lot of people thinking if we're going to strengthen in positions, it's right back, left back.
- 6:01He's stepped up.
- 6:03And I just thought we were solid across the board.
- 6:05And at halftime, although I actually went in open for a win at halftime, no one out of the game went.
- 6:09So I was thinking I'll take a 0-0 draw here.
- 6:12And we're capable of getting that.
- 6:13So we know it's going to be tough at the top end of the pitch this season.
- 6:17So the more
- 6:18the more clean sheets we get, the better we'll be for the team.
- 6:23I mean, purely for selfish reasons, I was over the moon with the 0-0 because I have an evident defender and I also have Jordan Pickford and Golden, my fancy football team.
- 6:32So it wasn't just about fancy football, it was about getting the results.
- 6:37But yeah, they were really good.
- 6:38I thought, you know, going...
- 6:41As we always touch upon, when someone's looking for the results and they haven't had the results in an hour long and they haven't scored a goal, you just think, right, first five minutes, just play Everton.
- 6:51We said to me, yeah.
- 6:53Yeah.
- 6:54Just play Everton because you'll get to the win and you'll probably be winning 3-0 at a half time.
- 6:58And the fact that they went out there and just shut them down, I thought it was really impressive, really good.
- 7:04And listen, we could have nicked the win, but I think the draw was overall fair.
- 7:07And...
- 7:09it's one of the only times where I've seen Everton go away from home and you don't look like you're just playing for the draw you look like you're going you know we're going to have a go here as well we're going to try and nick it and so going towards the end them last 10 minutes they were nervy for Tottenham I thought they were the ones who were panicking we were the ones on the ascendancy and I thought we were good so I
- 7:31made up, and the fact that we're going away from it, we're doing better at home, you know, we look more consistent at home, we look more direct at home, I just think, you know, we're on the up, obviously we're short one number, but, it is what it is, we've just got to deal with it.
- 7:48We had the better chances in that game as well.
- 7:51Make no mistake about it.
- 7:53I mean, Tiano is unlucky.
- 7:57He's got a score, but he's unlucky.
- 7:59I mean, the keeper doesn't even know it hits his head.
- 8:02I'll be saying that about him a little bit again.
- 8:04I'm sure a bit.
- 8:05He's got a score, but he's really unlucky.
- 8:07Keenan Drewsby Hall has a really good chance.
- 8:11He could lay that off for a tap-in.
- 8:13We trust him to go by himself.
- 8:15The keeper makes a save.
- 8:16Brennan Johnson's got to score that.
- 8:18I know it's coming to him quickly and I know it bounces just in front of him, but he's inside the frame of the goal and he's got all of the goals to aim for.
- 8:25He just needs to sort of caress it, control it, guide it.
- 8:30And he seemed to go for like time and power, which...
- 8:34you know, if you try and drop a ball and hit it, it's going to be hard.
- 8:38Just let your foot meet it on its way through.
- 8:41And he didn't, but we had the best chances in the game and definitely could have won, but I think we'd take a point, as Tony said.
- 8:49But again, I'll touch on what Tony said, the fact that getting to a certain part of the game, knowing that,
- 8:56Everton usually do this to us or Everton will usually concede a goal or, you know, we get to these situations, it doesn't matter how well we've done, something, you know, a ball will go against us or history will go against us and we actually, we've stood up to history and we've stood up to our own recent sort of,
- 9:15negativity of noise that we're even making.
- 9:20That, you know, well, it'll be us or their striker will score because they'll score.
- 9:24The team stood up to that as well.
- 9:25And that was probably the thing I liked the most.
- 9:28They stood up to history.
- 9:32Does Moyes deserve big plaudits for how hard he's made us to get beat?
- 9:37I don't know about plaudits.
- 9:39I think we're pleased with it.
- 9:40But I think it's what we expect.
- 9:42I think if you're looking at a David Moyes team,
- 9:45I think if he was to be the manager of us for the next five or six years, by the end of that, we will be playing lovely football.
- 9:52But at the start, I mean, we might say two or three years for anyone listening that's scared by that time frame.
- 9:58We're not going to play good football for five, six years.
- 10:00That's not what I'm saying.
- 10:01I'm saying, but if he was ahead of us for a long time,
- 10:06By the end of it, I think he showed in three or four different football teams I played in, the Pienares and the Cales and when Darren Gibson came and Jelovic.
- 10:13We played a lot of different good football along the way, but he always starts at the back.
- 10:17He always starts to try and make you solid.
- 10:19So when you say plaudits for that, it's...
- 10:21It's where his base of his team comes from.
- 10:23I always knew he'd come in and bring that to us.
- 10:26I knew he'd make us difficult to get beat.
- 10:28I knew he'd make us competitive.
- 10:30I knew he'd sign players that buy into that across midfield.
- 10:34So I don't think I'm ever worried about that.
- 10:36So yes, I'm pleased.
- 10:37Yes, I'm happy.
- 10:37Yes, I'll say brilliant Dave Moyes, a team capable of keeping clean sheets.
- 10:42But that's his thing, isn't it?
- 10:46That's his mandate.
- 10:47That's what he does.
- 10:48It's his bread and butter.
- 10:50that's just David Moyes all over that's his ethos comes in he makes you hard to beat it should be any manager's ethos if I'm being totally honest if you don't concede goals and you're not hard to beat and you're hard to beat then you've got somewhere to start it's as simple as that if you're not conceding goals you're not losing games
- 11:08and that's how I would think every manager would look at it but do you know what I'm of this I think we're playing really good football at times I really do they're knocking around the pass it's not
- 11:21This isn't the David Moyes I've seen when he was first at our place with the kind of football he played at times.
- 11:27Because there's players running...
- 11:29It's like Niles, you're staying...
- 11:31I'm talking about the Wolves game now.
- 11:33Maitland Niles.
- 11:34Mate, he set off a few times last night and I thought, oh, where are you going?
- 11:39Oh, you're in the other half.
- 11:40And at times he was running to midfield.
- 11:43That scared the life out of you, a full-back being in the other half.
- 11:46Absolutely frightened the life out of me.
- 11:47It's not that he was in the other half, it's just the fact that he went running into the centre of the park a couple of times and I just thought, oh, I told you to do that.
- 11:54Well, do you know what the good thing about that is?
- 11:56He's a midfielder and he's capable of, which I've seen a few times, he can get on the half turn and get...
- 12:01Anyway, sorry, carry on.
- 12:02But how quick was he as well?
- 12:03And he was lightning fast, you know.
- 12:06I thought Wolves were really decent, to be fair, last night.
- 12:08I thought they were very good, thought they were very well drilled.
- 12:11I thought they had some decent chances.
- 12:13Jordan Peggford pulls off a massive and really important save into that second half.
- 12:19And then I thought...
- 12:22I thought it was one of...
- 12:25Tieno Barry's lesser games.
- 12:27I'm trying to be as positive as I can.
- 12:29I didn't think he'd done very well against Wolves.
- 12:33But I'll tell you something, when Brennan Johnson come on, the speed and the quickness of him and the fact that he was able to get into certain positions that Barry weren't.
- 12:44He had a one-on-one chance and he was in the speed of light.
- 12:48The ball got played.
- 12:49I think it was Keenan Dupia who sets him in.
- 12:52Yeah.
- 12:53And he's in and behind them.
- 12:55Within a couple of minutes of being on, I just thought, oh, that's the kind of run...
- 13:00And I've never had him down, Brennan Johnson, as an out-now forward.
- 13:03And I don't think he is.
- 13:05But the fact that he sees them runs and he makes them lets me know, oh, you can be a false nine.
- 13:11You can be a decoy.
- 13:13You can open the game up for other players to come into.
- 13:16I just thought, you know, there was a lot of positives.
- 13:18So, you know what the biggest, most important thing for me now is this weekend?
- 13:23Not losing.
- 13:25Do not lose momentum.
- 13:26Don't go into the international break.
- 13:29Ideally, we'd love to all go in on a win, 3-4, 5-0 win, give these a good hiding like they deserve, what they should be getting.
- 13:35But ultimately, just keep the momentum of going in, because I hate these international breaks.
- 13:40I mean, we've just had a World Cup.
- 13:42It shouldn't even be happening.
- 13:43It should not be happening.
- 13:44It should be cancelled out for a whole season.
- 13:46Just no internationals.
- 13:48Let everyone just enjoy playing club football.
- 13:51It's like two weeks as well, isn't it?
- 13:52So annoying.
- 13:53It's pathetic.
- 13:53I don't mind.
- 13:54I get a couple of weeks off from where?
- 13:57Don't start me off again.
- 14:02I don't mind a little international.
- 14:04I've never, ever minded.
- 14:05The only time I hated the international break was when I got called up for England.
- 14:08Suddenly I had to work during the week.
- 14:13other than that I used to get a lovely weekend away what will the routine be like for the players international break because we're not full of internationals are we to be honest so what's the dance no we've got a few but I I don't actually know this time because this is the first time it's ever been such a long one so normally I don't know
- 14:32For an international kind of break, let's just say you play on a Saturday, you have one weekend off.
- 14:39It's a variation of this by a day or two, but it's generally the same.
- 14:42You'll probably have Sunday, Monday off.
- 14:44You'll come back into training Tuesday, Wednesday, maybe Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, depending on the manager.
- 14:49You'll work really hard in those three days.
- 14:52And then you'll get a variation of Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, maybe even Monday off.
- 14:57And then you'll come back at the start of the next week and then you start building up to your game on the following weekend.
- 15:04And again, you might come back Monday of your game, Saturday of your game, not till Sunday.
- 15:08They might give you an extra day off Tuesday.
- 15:11And then the internationals come back a variation of Wednesday, Thursday, Friday.
- 15:16I mean, the ones that travel a long way can come back Friday, morning, Friday night even, but.
- 15:22You then start to build up to the team.
- 15:24So if you're not in the squad, you get at least three, maybe even four days off continuously over a period, which, as I say, I used to love, get myself away, power down, just mentally.
- 15:37It's a great little mental break of, right, we've done that first section, we've got this many points, or we didn't, or it was disabled, just to go away and reassess it, have a think about it.
- 15:47power down, mentally spend a bit of time with your family because even though the season's just started, which it has and everybody's thinking like yourselves, we've only been going for three weeks, but the players have been back in training for eight, nine weeks now.
- 16:00Three of them, maybe even four of them, they've actually spent on tour away from the family.
- 16:05Three weeks in Australia or two weeks in America or two weeks in Austria.
- 16:10You've literally spent no time with your family over the last eight weeks because the season starts thick and fast as well.
- 16:15So,
- 16:16Yeah, it was always a good time just to reconnect, power down and do all that until I got an England cap, which was...
- 16:25So it's just to be sure.
- 16:26I'm only joking about that for anyone listening.
- 16:28I'm very proud of the England cap.
- 16:30Just to be sure.
- 16:30So for the outside looking in, you'll think of normal football fans, they'll be thinking, mate, they've got two weeks off.
- 16:36So the gaffer's not just going to come in and go, you've just got a full week off.
- 16:39That's never going to happen.
- 16:40No, not at all.
- 16:40But especially because it's different this time because there's literally two weekends off.
- 16:44There's two international breaks packed into one.
- 16:47So I've got absolutely no idea how the managers are going to do it.
- 16:51And it's the first time for all the different managers.
- 16:53So I would be amazed if...
- 16:55throughout the whole of the Premier League and Championship, that anybody sort of has a set way of doing it and anybody does it the same.
- 17:03There'll be variations as everybody's trying to see what works best for them, what works best for the squad.
- 17:08There's probably, I would expect, going to be a behind-closed-doors friendly for a few players that probably need a game or are on the way back from fitness.
- 17:18Eight minutes.
- 17:19If it was me...
- 17:21and I was one of the players that hasn't been called up, I would like it behind closed doors friendly, rather than just train all the time, train, train, train.
- 17:28I'd rather just have a little knock.
- 17:29Let's bring in...
- 17:31It might have to be a team that needs a game as well, but bring someone in and let's play.
- 17:37Do you know when you're playing them behind those friendly games?
- 17:42is everyone going for it?
- 17:43I mean, I know that sounds stupid, are people trying, everyone's trying to impress the manager, are you trying to show that, you know, you should be playing, or how does that work?
- 17:52It depends on your mentality, it depends on where you are, with regards to the team, it depends on your fitness levels, it depends on what you're trying to prove, you know,
- 18:01For some people, it's just get through the 90 minutes.
- 18:04Don't feel like you're going to... For instance, if Jimmy Garner's now going to be there, just picking him out, just for instance, a guy who's getting better by the game, his fitness levels are getting better, you're saying, play the game, no stupid tackles.
- 18:19No stupid this.
- 18:20Don't think you have to play 70-yard passes.
- 18:22Don't think you have to impress me.
- 18:23You impress me by getting through the 90 minutes without an injury.
- 18:26All right?
- 18:28I'm not bothered about the result.
- 18:29You are bothered about the result in terms of if Sheffield United, for instance, bring a team to Finch Farm and you play.
- 18:35You want to beat Sheffield United's variation of this.
- 18:39But you're not that.
- 18:40You know, it doesn't matter.
- 18:40As long as...
- 18:42people and pieces get what they need to be.
- 18:44Maybe trying somebody in a different spot.
- 18:47But yeah, you just want them to get through the minutes.
- 18:51And we're a small squad.
- 18:52We're going to need everybody firing.
- 18:54What you don't want...
- 18:56for instance, is you just mentioned about Everton not having a load of internationals.
- 19:01I think we've got a few, but for those that go away, if they go away and they train intensely at their international teams and they do great, and if they play, they've kept up their fitness and they've played a lot of football.
- 19:13If they don't, at least they've trained at a real top level for a bit.
- 19:18If you're not doing it for suddenly two to two and a half weeks back at the training ground, and you've probably not been playing anyway, suddenly you're just coming down from those top fitness levels that you've got to, because you're not playing international games.
- 19:32You're not keeping up your fitness.
- 19:35You're just dropping off.
- 19:36It's like...
- 19:37For instance, if a guy doesn't play for three weeks, three weeks later, he's going to probably not, he's going to be 95, 90% of his potential sharpness just from coming down, not playing.
- 19:48So that's why I think they'll add the games in as well.
- 19:51And I think I'm really interested to see how these teams manage it, to be honest.
- 19:56Hmm.
- 19:58Just before we move on and look at the Ipswich game, as you mentioned, you were going to say a little word on Barry.
- 20:05There was another big chance in that game against Wolves where you maybe would have expected them to score.
- 20:10Does it come to a point where we're saying it's unlucky too much?
- 20:17I suppose, yes, you do eventually.
- 20:20I always watch...
- 20:22teammates reactions around players you know when you've got a player that you you think keeps frustrating you or letting you down and you put across i mean garn up or across into to barry last night and he headed it actually his contact was brilliant he rose brilliantly he headed it back across the goalkeeper um
- 20:44And it's an unbelievable save by ex-Everton goalkeeper, Joe Virginia, who played for Wolves last night.
- 20:52And I'm looking and he's done everything that he got taught to do.
- 20:55Back across the goalkeeper, keep it under the bar, good power, good timing.
- 21:00And he's had it saved.
- 21:03Whereas if you look at it in slow motion, the big gaps at the near post, you save four yards out that you've got to score.
- 21:10So I'm torn on that one.
- 21:13I'm frustrated for him because it's not like he's scuffed it or missed it.
- 21:16His contact is brilliant.
- 21:18But I'm looking at the players around him, just getting a little bit frustrated with him, which...
- 21:26But at the same time, they'll be delighted when he scores.
- 21:29When he puts one in, they'll back him 100%.
- 21:33I think we just need to get him off and running.
- 21:36But I thought that was a good game last night.
- 21:38I really did.
- 21:40I thought some people played well.
- 21:42I thought, how can he impresses me every time I see him?
- 21:44Just his busyness and his play.
- 21:45Yes, he gives the ball away here or there.
- 21:47But he'll...
- 21:48He'll keep improving as that goes.
- 21:50I thought Tyler Dibblen showed me a lot.
- 21:53And I've been desperate for him too.
- 21:54I've been dying for him too.
- 21:56And I thought he showed me a lot last night.
- 21:58Yes, some people will say it against the championship team in Wolves who, you know, they were Premier League last season.
- 22:03So let's not think they dropped too much.
- 22:07I thought he dropped the shoulder.
- 22:08I thought he was brave.
- 22:09I thought he went at his man.
- 22:10I thought his feet and his trickery were good.
- 22:12He got into the box decisively at times.
- 22:16I didn't think he gave it away an awful lot, even though I'm expecting him to, because that's the style of player he is.
- 22:21It's through ball to Brennan Johnson.
- 22:23I think that's what you were talking about before, Tone.
- 22:25When he chopped inside and played it through to Brennan Johnson, it was outstanding.
- 22:29And the best thing about that, which I was screaming to my kids, because I was watching on telly, screaming to my kids,
- 22:35There it is.
- 22:36That's the thing that will get him in the team.
- 22:39He played that pass, right?
- 22:41And within 20 seconds, he sprinted all the way back because they had a break.
- 22:45And he made a one-on-one tackle at the back.
- 22:48And that tells me he's not a tricky winger that's now admired his passing and then stood there.
- 22:53He's made that pass.
- 22:55And he still had the awareness to see what's around him, know that we're in a little bit of trouble, sprint back, show good pace, made a great tackle.
- 23:03and then got a pat on his back, the crowd loved, and that is the type of thing that will get him trusted by David Murray to get the first team.
- 23:09That's an Everton player.
- 23:10Just clapping my head off.
- 23:12That's an Everton player.
- 23:13You know, when that tackle, he was one-on-one, that guy, he was in on goal, it was just dibbling, caught him.
- 23:18He got through the two centre-halves, I don't know how he got through the two of them, but he did, and Tyron makes that tackle and I jumped up screaming.
- 23:26I celebrated that like it was a goal.
- 23:28That's exactly what I was in the ground last night and I just thought, wow, well done, lad.
- 23:32that's going to endear you more to the fans.
- 23:36Don't get me wrong, there was times where I'm looking at him and I worry about him because he seems to be, if he's in a world of his own, and he's just walking around, and I don't know, I hope he's not feeling sorry for himself, but he wasn't, he'd get on the ball, he wanted the ball, he's willing to go forward, he was brave at times.
- 23:55I just think,
- 23:57When you give it to a winger, the last thing you want to see a winger do is chop back and look to pass it back.
- 24:03But we've got to understand not every person's ill and men's job.
- 24:07And not every person's going to want to go get the ball and doesn't even look back and just go at you and attack you.
- 24:13I think Tyler Dibblington will be a player that he might be playing short, intricate passes and quick and fast one-twos to get in and behind.
- 24:20He's not necessarily going to outrun you and outpace you.
- 24:26He's going to beat you by being a bit smarter and being a bit cleverer on the ball.
- 24:30So it's a quick one-two.
- 24:31it's a quick shift and pass, or it's not going to be a knock and run pass, you know what I'm saying?
- 24:36Like, when Tyree George came on last night, it was a completely different set of skills, what he was using.
- 24:42He was just legging people.
- 24:44He was just absolutely leaving people for dead.
- 24:46And there's not, like, wolves, there was nothing they could do with them.
- 24:49He took on three, four men, putting crosses.
- 24:52The minute he came on, he had a massive impact, Tyree George.
- 24:55And he...
- 24:57I do think the more Tyler Dibblom plays and the more minutes he gets, I do think the more we'll see of, the less we'll see of the walking around or the strutting around.
- 25:07I just think it's his persona.
- 25:10And I think the less we'll see of it because he'll become more and more of an Everton player and more and more ultimately of a David Moyes player.
- 25:17That tackle epitomised everything Everton's about.
- 25:20You lose the ball, we get back.
- 25:23We've talked about him before in terms of if players that have that sort of demeanour about them, they're out of the socks down, that look like they never sprint, that kind of look like they don't care.
- 25:34When they play well, they look like the game is so easy and they're brilliant to watch and they look arrogant.
- 25:39Cole Palmer style, Van Dijk style, you know, when they play well, they look outstanding.
- 25:47and they look like somebody we all want to emulate and we all want to be.
- 25:50But when they don't play well and when the game's not going their way, you start to question how much they care and how much they're trying and how much they really, really want it, which is probably a bit unfair because they do.
- 26:01It's just their style makes you feel that they don't.
- 26:05So he's going to have that to contend with his whole career.
- 26:09But performances like last night, showing that he's prepared to drive around and run around and,
- 26:14hit tackles and get forward, do the horrible stuff, get back and all that.
- 26:20Definitely going to get him games of football because the more he gets trusted defensively and to be switched on, because the better.
- 26:27Because I remember speaking to you all,
- 26:29In fact, I spoke about Tyler Dibbon before.
- 26:31One of the reasons he didn't play an awful lot was because of this exact game last year.
- 26:36Wolves away, it was though, in the Carabao Cup at this stage where Wolves scored that winning goal because Dibbon didn't really close anyone down and he was just sort of floating through the game and his mindset was a bit...
- 26:48Well, I haven't got the ball, so I'm obviously not taking part in the game.
- 26:51Whereas last night, it took a year, but last night showed that actually that year looks like he's learnt a lot.
- 26:58He's developed a lot.
- 26:59Training, mostly, you would expect, has brought a lot out of him.
- 27:02So, yeah, I'm really pleased for where he can get to now.
- 27:07And then you looked at, Tony just said as well, when Tariq George came on, how bright did we look and how energetic did we look on both sides?
- 27:14Yeah.
- 27:15You know, the youth of them both.
- 27:17Suddenly we've now, I mean, Jack composes the game and gives us things differently.
- 27:23But we were talking at the start of the season, if one of those two could step up, George or Diblin, how good would that be?
- 27:29What a future we'd have.
- 27:30Well, they both might now.
- 27:32Imagine where we can go with two young, very start of their careers, energetic, giving you different kind of things, players.
- 27:39Yeah, I enjoyed last night.
- 27:40I did.
- 27:42thought we'd have scored earlier yeah I would have been much nicer for me heart and for me grey hairs on my head that would have been far better what do we make out of Jack Grealish against Wolves because I thought he's really good he controls the game at times but I don't know it just when Tyree George comes on it's pace it's getting at you it's quick Jack's a different player but he penetrates you in a different way like he gets at you he gets at you once again with brains
- 28:12Yeah, well, Jack's not going to outpace anyone anymore, really.
- 28:16What he does, similar to himself or, say, Pienaar or, you know, just players I played with and related to, when you're dribbling at someone, you dribble...
- 28:25in between the gaps.
- 28:26So you run close enough to another player that they don't think they can tackle you, but you're far enough away from your playing.
- 28:31You run in the spaces rather than actually get at somebody 1v1.
- 28:37Whereas Tyra George and Tyler Dibblom want to get at people 1v1.
- 28:40You want to leave them.
- 28:42You don't need to overlap them.
- 28:43You want to expose them 1v1 against their fullbacks.
- 28:46Whereas Jack,
- 28:47similar to Pienaar, similar to myself, similar to other players we've had down the years.
- 28:53We need runners.
- 28:54We've got good skill and we'll come inside, we can see a pass.
- 28:58Think about Jack's best moments.
- 28:59It's playing in a full-back.
- 29:01So Mikhellenko was, again, really good last night for his overlaps and being in the right place and Jack playing him in.
- 29:06But you think of Jack's best moments as well.
- 29:08It's usually cutting inside and having a juicer-holl run because Keenan's made a really good run for someone for Jack to pass to or a striker for him to pass to.
- 29:16So he's all dictated to by that really.
- 29:21But he's, he controls the game.
- 29:22He wins as far as when we need to.
- 29:24I think he's, I think he does play us a little bit slow at times.
- 29:26So I thought Boise was pretty good in his decision to actually, maybe it was, he's only got 60, 70 minutes in him.
- 29:33I don't know, but to bring him off because we needed to keep being relentless with our pace to wear them down, to batter them, to go again, go again, not slow the game down.
- 29:42Uh,
- 29:43But we definitely need him at the football club.
- 29:47Do you think he's not 100% Oz?
- 29:49Do you think he's not 100% I think he's trying to catch Matt's fitness?
- 29:53Yeah, he will be because he's been at City for the start of the pre-season in which I don't know how much, I don't think he's played an awful lot.
- 30:01Certainly not as much as we'd have played him in pre-season to get him up to his levels.
- 30:05So when I'm talking about behind closed doors games, Jack will be one of those that could do with it.
- 30:11Just to get him up to that final 5% of sharpness.
- 30:16Because we all know what player he is when he is at that sharpness.
- 30:21Yeah, because we need him.
- 30:23We're playing with one and a half strikers.
- 30:26Yes, Brennan Johnson did okay.
- 30:28when you come on, he runs it different.
- 30:29I thought Tarek George might have come on up front.
- 30:33But the one I was, another person I was pleased for, as I'm sure everyone was, was Charlie Alcaraz coming on.
- 30:39Great goal.
- 30:40He's been starved of minutes.
- 30:43When he signed for us, he was our best player.
- 30:45Last season or season before, when we got him, he was our best player.
- 30:49He's got some crucial goals to help us stay up.
- 30:52And,
- 30:54hasn't been fancied by him most because I think he gives the ball away in silly places and he keeps making silly decisions.
- 31:00But...
- 31:01is the Sunderland away last season when he went through one-on-one and we didn't get a shot.
- 31:06You know, just popped into my head.
- 31:08Moments like that.
- 31:10But he's got real talent and real skill.
- 31:12And when we're seeing these Carabao Cup games, I'm thinking he would play in them minutes and he's still not.
- 31:18And yet to be coming on and be positive and come on and show energy, not coming on and be like, I'm going to show you.
- 31:24I'm going to score you and show you I should be in the team.
- 31:27Because it was a great touch and tear.
- 31:29Great finish.
- 31:31Who's our best eleven?
- 31:33What's our best eleven?
- 31:34Because I don't know.
- 31:37I'm pleased to say that I'm happy about that.
- 31:40I think that's a really good sign.
- 31:42I'll tell you, I'll tell you, I could pick me centre forward.
- 31:48Michael Keane.
- 31:50Well, we've only got one.
- 31:53So I'm good with that.
- 31:54And I'll tell you, I'll pick me goalkeeper because that was another thing about last night.
- 31:57We went with a strong team, but we kept Pickford.
- 32:00How often have you seen your number two goalkeeper coming in?
- 32:03And when we get to 65 minutes, they have to always make a save, goalkeepers.
- 32:08There's always going to be a save they have to make in a game.
- 32:11and he made that save.
- 32:12If we go 1-0 behind there, we're not winning that game.
- 32:14We're out the cup.
- 32:15And he was there in that moment.
- 32:17And that's why you play him in that game.
- 32:19But anyway, sorry.
- 32:20Go on.
- 32:20He's a saviour, mate.
- 32:22But no, I always want to ask you, to be honest, I mean, I just...
- 32:27I think I know most about, well, I know the back, we obviously, we know the back four.
- 32:30When everyone's fit and everyone's firing, I think we know.
- 32:33But I don't know the exact from midfield, from the midfield.
- 32:37I don't know what we're starting.
- 32:39I don't know the shape we're starting.
- 32:40Because there's such a good variety of players who can do various jobs in various positions.
- 32:45And I think it just, a big part of it comes down to, I think, who we're actually playing.
- 32:50That's what I think I'm massive about.
- 32:52And that's what I'm happy about.
- 32:53David Moyes has got options in the midfield.
- 32:57I think we've got, we know the defence, you know, we know, we know, you're a captain for the reasons, Archie, so you know you're starting every week.
- 33:04Gerard Brantwaite, if he's fit every week, you'd assume he's starting.
- 33:08Maitland-Niles, obviously Michaelenko on the left, Jordan in goal.
- 33:12But when it comes to midfield, he obviously likes to hold the midfielders.
- 33:16Well, not necessarily hold them, but to that kind of sit.
- 33:20And then this is where I start going, well, Jimmy Garner has to play every week as a sitting.
- 33:24And I would think the new boy who's come in is going to be playing with him.
- 33:28But Hackney, because I think he's a really good footballer, but then where do you fit in the others?
- 33:34It's a proper puzzle, but it is what it is.
- 33:37Look, it's exactly what you want.
- 33:39Now, when you've got 11 players,
- 33:44that you know is when you know you're starting team and you've got 11 players and you play them every week once you get an injury and you're bringing someone else in you're lowering the standard of the team whereas if you've now got a start in 15 16 I mean they're saying 18 they say you've got a squad of 18 and they could all be starters yeah I wouldn't come too far away from that maybe I'd say 15
- 34:07maybe 16, 15, that you know you can rotate.
- 34:12You think about, I'm not comparing us to Man City under Pep, but I'm saying think about Pep.
- 34:16Pep didn't have a best start in 11 ever, I don't think, because at any point nobody was surprised by the 11 he picked because he may have put...
- 34:26De Silva in there and De Bruyne in there or he may have put Gundogan or he may have put because he considered he had team of all starters and if we have that brilliantly because you need competition you need to people the players need to know that it's competitive that we need to be able to make subs and us not get any worse that's one of the reasons and it
- 34:48If everybody's up to speed and everybody's fit, which I thought last night was a great moment to kind of show that.
- 34:54Diblin's basically said, put me on, coach.
- 34:56Next time we need a goal or next time you need a bit of inspiration, I'm ready.
- 34:59I'll do all the defensive.
- 35:01Tyreek George has already showed that.
- 35:03Brennan Johnson showed that he can give us a little bit up front now.
- 35:06So suddenly, Charlie Alcaraz is coming on and scoring goals.
- 35:09We've always loved the midfield four that we've got.
- 35:12We could play at any moment.
- 35:14You've got...
- 35:15Hackney Harrison Armstrong who's done brilliant to propel himself forward Jimmy Garner who we all want to play but probably needs to just sharpen up a last touch because of that pre-season he missed and Keaton if any of three of those four start in the midfield we're not batting an eyelid and I love that about us now so just the main thing is for us to stay fifth we need to because of the limitations of our squad we need them all to stay fifth
- 35:39Oz, when you were playing, and you think about how many of us was using the midfield area where you just go, right, it could be me, this could be, did you have a set team?
- 35:49It was only ever me, mate.
- 35:51Just me.
- 35:52Whoever was next to me.
- 35:54No, but you've been, you've been having some brilliant midfielders in the round.
- 35:58You've got guys Barry obviously gave over various others, but...
- 36:02When you're saying that as a player, are you saying, oh, it might be me this week, it might not, but how's that going to work?
- 36:08So them lads, the gaffer names his team, does he name his team on the Friday, does he name his team on the Saturday morning?
- 36:13You know, do you know you're playing every week?
- 36:17That's what I'm trying to get at.
- 36:18I liked to find a team out on a Friday.
- 36:21And even if I got to a point where I was quite confident that I was going to be, I was having a run in the team and I was playing most of the games, I was still always nervous on a Friday.
- 36:31because I was never sort of completely assured.
- 36:35That's how I felt.
- 36:37Yeah, I never felt there was a guarantee.
- 36:39No, I always might make changes.
- 36:42But even when I was senior and I was in that position, I never sort of let myself.
- 36:47excuse me, let myself feel like I was a guarantee.
- 36:51But especially if you're in a position we were at a time, for instance, when there were times when Simon Davis came in, suddenly I'm having to compete for my position.
- 37:02When Mikel came in and then Steven Pienaar came in, suddenly you're competing for your position and you're moving across.
- 37:08And, you know, Mikel and Steven competed at one point and whoever won the battle out of them two, whoever came on was definitely not making us worse.
- 37:17you know there was I think we've we've been at our best when we've kind of had players that have had a run in the team when we're kind of settled but we've got a a 14 I think if you've got three subs especially back in the day when you could only have three subs if you've got
- 37:34three subs that you know actually don't hurt the team but they just give you a little bit something different they give you a little bit of you know maybe an extra striker he'll give you the way he holds the ball up well or you know you've got a winger that's pacey rather than one that comes inside but they could start at any time I think they're the best teams that they're best squads to be involved in and although we are lacking still in some positions I'm honestly seeing us
- 38:01I'm seeing the building blocks at Everson at the minute of us starting to put a squad together.
- 38:08So come on then, pick me the midfielder who starts.
- 38:10I'm still not prepared to pick you at a starting 11th.
- 38:13I'm not.
- 38:14I'm not because as you said, as you said, it depends who we're playing against.
- 38:18Because if you're playing against a full-back, let's just say on the left-hand side, I'm trying to think of one at the top of my head, but let's say a Calafiore who...
- 38:29who's, let's say, good 1v1, good pace, loves it when he's up against a full-back 1v1 who goes on the outside and has got a lot of pace.
- 38:38And I'm thinking, oof, Brennan Johnson, that's Brennan Johnson, I'm not sure.
- 38:42So all Brennan Johnson's strengths on that right-hand side, Calafiore's good at.
- 38:45What does Calafiore hate, for instance?
- 38:47Oh, he hates somebody playing in the pocket and he hates someone coming in onto the left foot and he hates somebody who's got close control.
- 38:52Then you're going, right, that's a game for Dibble and he'll give him a right goal there.
- 38:56So...
- 38:57So I think your team has to be detated to.
- 39:00Yeah, but only if your team is all fit and your team's raring to go and your team's up to a certain fitness, which after this game and Wednesday, you'd say, look, poof, those players that came in showed me they're thereabouts, to be honest.
- 39:13So especially, look, Garner's had another game.
- 39:16Hackney's always looked sharp.
- 39:17Harrison Armstrong had the night off.
- 39:19Dewsbury Hall.
- 39:21is going to start more often than not.
- 39:24So, yeah, I think we've... As I say, I think we've got the potential to put a good quality squad together.
- 39:33Might have found the gem in that Hackney.
- 39:35I think being brave on the ball, wanting to go forward all the time, not so much sideways, more forward, looks a player.
- 39:43Yeah, he certainly does.
- 39:46Are we happy with the draw?
- 39:47Newcastle, next round?
- 39:49At home?
- 39:52Tom?
- 39:54Eh, could have been a bit.
- 39:55I mean, you know, we all know we wanted Fleetwood, let's not be honest, let's not tell lies.
- 39:59I think Arsenal, did Arsenal get them?
- 40:01Of course they did, of course they did.
- 40:03Of course they did every time.
- 40:05I mean, yeah, I mean, I'm just happy we didn't get the shite because I just didn't want to see us play them just yet.
- 40:11I'm not ready for that yet.
- 40:12I'm not ready for me levels of anxiety to go to that kind of mark.
- 40:16And I don't need to be thinking about strangling Scousers.
- 40:20but yeah but they got Chelsea so hopefully they go out I wouldn't wish that on them I don't wish that on anyone you know made the best team win but I just don't want to see us play you don't wish Liverpool to go out the cup that made me sick it's not the fact that made me feel sick no because what will happen is I wish that and then they end up winning it mate just don't say nothing about them just leave them alone just let them be just leave them in the corner the manager's doing great wonderful have a great just keep doing what you're doing
- 40:49you're out my peripheral vision i'm not interested so yeah uh but i don't know it's just yeah newcastle are home you know it's one they're going through a bit of change aren't they and will their manager think about you know my back schemes to wall here if i if i really target a cup that's going to get me a bit of a pass
- 41:12because if I was a manager new manager in the league I would think to myself well I'm not going to be doing super great in the league this year but if I have a really good cup run that can kind of save me and it will save anyone whichever manager wins a cup this year I think that it's going to not all managers obviously but it could guarantee safety for a manager listen if Everton win a cup this season that is huge absolutely huge and any of the new managers coming in they win a cup it keeps them in a job I think
- 41:42whether that's Iriola whether that's Alonso whether that's I just think it keeps them in a job unless obviously something stupid happens like what Wigan done where they win a cup and they go down obviously that's just not happening but
- 41:55You know, I think the Cup could be a saviour for the number of teams this year.
- 41:59One thing I'm happy about is the Gaffers putting out a strong team every time we play in it.
- 42:03That's the most important thing for me.
- 42:04And it tells us, as the fans, I'm after this.
- 42:07I'm after it.
- 42:08I want it.
- 42:09And that's just brilliant.
- 42:10I'm over the moon about it.
- 42:12I think he put a strong team... Well, if you go and have a look at the team that got knocked out last year against Wolves away, that was a strong team, you know.
- 42:19So he has been trying to do that for a little bit.
- 42:21He has known the importance, even more so since he came back to the club.
- 42:25But if we are going to win a cup, you're going to have to beat some big teams, some Premier League teams along the way.
- 42:30You're going to have to win games.
- 42:32Yeah.
- 42:34that are close and could go either way.
- 42:37And the main thing you talk about is we got a home draw.
- 42:41Brilliant.
- 42:42Would we have liked to have had, say, Fleetwood at home, or I think Peterborough is still in there, or Bristol Norwich I think is still in there at the minute, although they might have a tie to play.
- 42:50Would you want one of them at home?
- 42:52Absolutely.
- 42:52You'd want a team from a lower division, if you can get it.
- 42:55But...
- 42:57I'd rather have Newcastle at home than Arsenal away, for instance.
- 43:02So you take the rough with the smooth.
- 43:04You take it as, this is a winnable game for us.
- 43:07It'll get us into, if we win this, you're in the quarterfinals of the Carabao Cup.
- 43:11Now, I'm not going ahead of myself because...
- 43:14We've done that far too many times.
- 43:15And every time we get ahead of ourselves and start imagining the quarterfinals and the semifinals or where we're going, we forget to actually win the game and we get knocked out.
- 43:25So I'm not getting ahead, but I'm saying when our draw came out, Everton at home against not one of the top four teams supposed in the country.
- 43:35Yeah, we'll take that.
- 43:36And add to it, Newcastle just got turned over massively at Leeds because Leeds played a really high sort of energetic game
- 43:43So yeah, away from home, Newcastle are there to be sort of got at.
- 43:47So yeah, happy enough.
- 43:49As a player, would you rather have a team slightly better at home or a team slightly lesser away as a player?
- 43:56So let's just say, for instance, based on last season's performances, would you rather play Newcastle at home or Brighton away?
- 44:04I'd rather have I'd rather have Newcastle at home I'd rather Against Against any other Against any Premier League team Any other team from the same league I'd rather be at home
- 44:15all day long, not least because of the, you know, the fans get to watch the home advantage, the noise we can make.
- 44:23It can be difficult when you're going into a game where expectation is weighing heavily to win.
- 44:28And if we're not winning after an hour, you can feel that the nervousness coming in from the, from the fans, which obviously we're feeling on the pitch.
- 44:36You don't need it to be amplified, but I always understand it.
- 44:40I'm a fan as well.
- 44:42Um,
- 44:43So you'd always choose a team from your own division at home.
- 44:45However, I used to love going away from home to the lower division teams.
- 44:50I used to love it.
- 44:51The atmospheres were really good and exciting.
- 44:54We knew we were better.
- 44:56If you just played your game and you were calm and composed and took the ball...
- 45:00You were more than likely going to win if you did your jobs.
- 45:03So I used to love those fixtures.
- 45:06FA Cup especially.
- 45:08Three o'clock in the afternoons.
- 45:09They were brilliant, brilliant games.
- 45:11But yeah, I think I'd take one at home.
- 45:14Which we've got, so fingers crossed.
- 45:17One team that didn't take advantage of their home draw was Man United.
- 45:21Went out to Brighton and they also didn't in the derby.
- 45:24He's under pressure, isn't he?
- 45:27He is, isn't he?
- 45:29He's got a fine up slip behind them, mate.
- 45:31He's in trouble.
- 45:32What did you think about the Foden incident?
- 45:34I want him to succeed, Michael Carrick.
- 45:37I really do.
- 45:39Yeah, so it's been tough.
- 45:40The Foden incident annoyed the life out of me.
- 45:44I think they either both stay on or they both go.
- 45:46Foden sort of pushes him with his shin rather than a two-footed studs.
- 45:52His studs never make contact with Bruno Fernandes.
- 45:55He just sort of...
- 45:56I was trying to say, talking to my kids about it, if...
- 46:00Foden would have ended up on his knees with his hands in the air and pushed him away with his hands.
- 46:05It wouldn't have been considered a red card.
- 46:06He ends up on his back, so he pushes him away with his legs after being booted up the backside.
- 46:11And that's considered a sending off.
- 46:13Bruno played the part, didn't he?
- 46:15Played the part of him, kicking somebody and then rolling around on the floor.
- 46:19But if anything, Bruno's was the more aggressive act.
- 46:24The problem is, in the Premier League, if you take them in isolation, Bruno's is probably a yellow and Foden's is probably a red that we've all come to sort of understand.
- 46:33But I just think that...
- 46:36I think the referee's...
- 46:38need to figure out a way, oh, it would be better if they can ref each game individually and be like, look, to Derby, they've both gone at each other, walk it off.
- 46:46Where the referees are so much under the law and so every decision is scrutinised.
- 46:52And if that isn't a red card, then the media and everybody are going, well, why isn't it compared to this, compared to this, compared to this?
- 46:58So the referees are having to ref each sort of decision over the course of a season rather than,
- 47:04old school refs being able to referee individual games in individual moments and say, shake hands, run it off, get on with it.
- 47:11They're not allowed to do that anymore.
- 47:12I'm trying to look at it because I haven't actually seen it.
- 47:14I'm trying to look at it.
- 47:15Have you not seen it?
- 47:16No.
- 47:18I'd quite like to hear your opinion on it to be fair.
- 47:21Trying to look at it.
- 47:22One of those, like the game's gone kind of moments.
- 47:24All of the deals have been took off X.
- 47:28So I can't actually see.
- 47:29There's a little plug for an online streaming service.
- 47:34I mean, it's just Twitter Aussie, you silly boy.
- 47:38I know.
- 47:41I was basically saying you were advertising an online service.
- 47:47Yeah, well, we'll ask Elon Musk if he wants to sponsor the pod.
- 47:50You were the one who took that into a place that didn't need to be there, Tom.
- 47:54Oh, we are.
- 47:55So he's kicked out.
- 47:59Do you think it's a kick-out?
- 48:04that's just silly boy silly boy well yeah put it in stills but I tell you what it looks like a kick out on the still but I don't I haven't seen it in real time so I can't really comment I could throw a good punch on a still in real life that wouldn't be a good punch even on a still you couldn't touch but on a still it would you're kidding no one may not be good yeah
- 48:26You couldn't fight sleep, Oz.
- 48:27Just behave yourself and be a whole.
- 48:28I'm fighting it all by myself at the minute.
- 48:31Furious at myself.
- 48:33Anyway.
- 48:34So, yeah, I didn't see it, so I can't really comment on that one, you know.
- 48:37And the VAR decision, Oz, is... What's your thoughts on that?
- 48:42Yeah, I've seen that.
- 48:43Bit of a mess.
- 48:45Um...
- 48:46To be fair, Harlan looked off...
- 48:48The initial incident, Harlan looked offside, didn't he?
- 48:52It's a mile off.
- 48:53I thought he looked offside.
- 48:55But actually, when they do the cameras and the lines, Harlan's inches on, or centimetres onside...
- 49:01So they got that wrong, but you have to notice that Enzo's taken part in the game, don't you?
- 49:06You have to realize that someone doing a diving header on the six-yard line is influencing the goalkeeper.
- 49:12They're in the center half.
- 49:15Yeah, so the goal shouldn't have stood.
- 49:18Do you think it's unacceptable that these mistakes are still happening?
- 49:21What a finish, though.
- 49:22Yeah, it was to be fair.
- 49:23Of course, look, we're humans.
- 49:26There's going to be human error.
- 49:28You say, is it acceptable that mistakes still happen?
- 49:31You say, well, why isn't every team that plays football perfect?
- 49:34Why do people make mistakes?
- 49:36Everybody in life makes mistakes.
- 49:38It's what we call human error, right?
- 49:40We hope it doesn't happen at the highest level, and we hope it doesn't happen in the big incidents.
- 49:44But every now and again, it will.
- 49:47There's nothing we can do about it.
- 49:49It's just part of...
- 49:51part of the game Man City fans are saying that it's retribution for the Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford goal that were scored about three years back when one of them was offside and I think it was Rashford that was offside and ended up leaving it but he was definitely involved it was quite a similar incident if you want to look that one up on your on your ex Tony you might you might get still images of that we can wait five minutes yeah
- 50:21I'm just sick of B.A.R.
- 50:23and all the nonsense and the stupidness around me.
- 50:27It's just a joke.
- 50:28It's not going anywhere.
- 50:30I don't mind it for the majority.
- 50:31If it's not clear and obvious, just butt out.
- 50:34Just piss off.
- 50:36I will say that I think they've hardly joined in this year.
- 50:42I don't think they've joined him.
- 50:43The only good thing is...
- 50:45I think they've tried to let the game go.
- 50:46How many times do you think that they've stopped the game and brought it back, I would say?
- 50:49The only good thing is...
- 50:50It must be well down on last year.
- 50:52The best thing about it at the minute is that you pointed this out to the World Cup
- 50:58Excuse me.
- 50:59You point this out in the World Cup, the fact that referees are allowing games to be played on more.
- 51:03Telling players to get up off the floor and they're jumping on the floor.
- 51:06It happened last night in a few of our players, players going down easy and getting told to get up.
- 51:10I loved it.
- 51:11Those are brilliant.
- 51:12Don't get me wrong.
- 51:13Screaming for fouls and abusing the referee as well.
- 51:15because he's not given certain Everton players who jump on the floor a foul.
- 51:19If an Everton player jumps on the floor, just understand, referees, it is a foul.
- 51:22Everton don't jump on the floor.
- 51:24We've been thrown on the floor, we've been fouled.
- 51:26But if anybody else jumps on the floor, yeah, they've just jumped on the floor.
- 51:29And we have to understand that and we have to put that out there right away.
- 51:33But I am enjoying...
- 51:36Things like that being players being told, you know, you're not getting a free kick for that.
- 51:42And what's sad about it is it's took this long to kick in because it's quite clear and obvious when you see some players running into the box.
- 51:49The players run into the box and there's four or five players in front of them.
- 51:53He knows he's not getting through them.
- 51:55So what he does is he knocks the ball into the legs and then he just runs into the legs and jumps into them.
- 52:00And you see it on numerous occasions.
- 52:02I feel like this season now, for the first time, referees just going, not having that, mate.
- 52:07No, just not having it.
- 52:09Whereas last season or two seasons before, that's a penalty every time.
- 52:13Or that's a free kick every time.
- 52:14Because one player who's on the ball runs into another player.
- 52:17Deliberately, by the way, because he's on the ball, he thinks he can just run into that player.
- 52:21So I think the game's getting better for her.
- 52:28Yeah, no, it has got better.
- 52:31Lastly, Ipswich, they've won two Premier League games since they've came up.
- 52:37They beat Sunderland, they beat Crystal Palace.
- 52:39Yeah, they're getting a hiding on Saturday.
- 52:41You think?
- 52:42Yeah, they're getting a hiding.
- 52:43They're getting a good hiding.
- 52:44Don't say it too early, Tony.
- 52:45Yeah, they're getting a hiding, mate.
- 52:46We're emitorians, don't say it too early.
- 52:48I can feel it mid-bones, they're getting a good hiding.
- 52:52Someone needs to feel TNL Barry's rage, and I think it's going to be a touch.
- 52:56Yeah.
- 52:58Funny because we've been saying it a few times, we said that against Spurs, if we win that game, then suddenly our season looks great.
- 53:04And we've said it in the game before, if we win this game or don't lose this game, suddenly the season looks like we started well.
- 53:10But I think you just mentioned Liam, with six games unbeaten at the minute, we've got, so that'll be six points.
- 53:20That's a decent start.
- 53:22But if you lose at home to Ipswich, just before the thing, suddenly you're going, that's this point.
- 53:28And we win this game.
- 53:29Come on, you're killing me now, mate.
- 53:31Stop it.
- 53:32I'm saying it's a defining game in terms of if we win this game, we've had a brilliant start to the season.
- 53:39When we win this game,
- 53:40Yeah, look, I'm on board.
- 53:43I'm at the game.
- 53:44I'll be, well, I was going to say I'll be cheering as much as anyone, but I'm doing the commentary for it.
- 53:49So I'll be trying to cheer as much as anybody.
- 53:54So I'm looking forward to it and Everton should win the game.
- 53:57But...
- 53:58when we win the game Ipswich have Ipswich have gone to Palace and won they've they went to United and went 1-0 up and should have actually been 2-0 up they've they've they won their opening game against they've competed 2-1 we need to be we need to be weary of that we need to be aware of it I still think we've got more than enough to win the game
- 54:19But I'll bring us back to the history.
- 54:21We've got to go and beat ourselves as much as anything.
- 54:24We've got to go and we've got to beat ourselves in this game before we can beat them.
- 54:29And hopefully we'll all be behind them.
- 54:31Hopefully we'll be supporting, cheering, even if things go a little bit against us.
- 54:36We'll be right behind the team because this could be a huge win.
- 54:40Even though it's, you know, a newly promoted team at home, it should be.
- 54:43No, Premier League games aren't that easy.
- 54:44Premier League games are hard.
- 54:46So hopefully we...
- 54:48we play as we all know Tieno scores another hat-trick Fantastic that's the dream they're going to want to come and shut us down but I think the first 20 minutes are massively important for someone like Hipswich to come into our place first 20 minutes no big chances you know cancel us out do whatever you need to do quiet in the crowd but I just think we'll be up for it on Saturday I really do
- 55:09They see the guy who scored their winner last week, that Zion Fleming, the one I said we should have signed for only £20 million for a striker, which is good these days.
- 55:18He'd scored 12-1 for Burnley.
- 55:21He scored their winner at Palace last week.
- 55:24So I think he started midweek.
- 55:25I don't know whether he'll start the weekend because they've had that lad Emerson up front who's scored two already, I think.
- 55:31I like the wire player as well.
- 55:32The one to watch is Leif Davis from left-back.
- 55:36Are you Ipswich's scouts or something?
- 55:38Why don't you know all these Ipswich players?
- 55:40Are you Marcus Stewart in disguise?
- 55:43How do you know these players?
- 55:45Just, I do the games, don't I?
- 55:47Study the games and make sure I'm on it.
- 55:50Tell us about it.
- 55:51It's his job.
- 55:52It's his job, Liam, but he's bigging them up and it's wrong.
- 55:55It's his job.
- 55:57But Leif Davies at Ipswich, I think, was involved in all three goals.
- 56:00I think he scored one, I said two.
- 56:01So left-back is going to be our right-sided player.
- 56:06Right midfielder is going to give us a lot going forward.
- 56:08We have to, but they're also going to have to track back.
- 56:11That's going to be an important job.
- 56:14So I reckon Brennan Johnson probably... Let's hope so, Leon Ipswich, Osman.
- 56:18Let's hope so.
- 56:20We're going to give them an eye and they're getting it.
- 56:22They're getting us Saturday.
- 56:23I've had enough of this league going on with us.
- 56:25We're at it Saturday.
- 56:26We are giving them a good going over.
- 56:27What's the score going to be, Tony?
- 56:294-1.
- 56:294-1.
- 56:29I thought you were going to go higher than what you were talking.
- 56:33give them a good eye I mean listen hopefully it's 4-0 the more clean sheets we have the better Jordan Pickford needs clean sheets as much as we can possibly get just for your fantasy league team no just for him just for him you know we need him to be the most I think he's about did I say he's 6 or 8 behind Alisson so they both got over 100 in the Premier League now
- 56:55Yeah, but Alisson's got like 108, so we want him to get past him.
- 56:58Yeah, but they have, they have, you know, they're well looked after.
- 57:01They've been protected since that man's been there.
- 57:04You know what I mean?
- 57:04They're the most protected club in the league.
- 57:06So precious they are.
- 57:07I mean, people can't even tackle Van Dijk.
- 57:09They're not even allowed to go near him.
- 57:10If you cough near Van Dijk, you get a yellow card.
- 57:13So, you know, it's just, he's the most protected defender I've ever seen in my life.
- 57:17How many?
- 57:18Not one cough, two coughs.
- 57:20How many coughs?
- 57:21Not three coughs.
- 57:21If you sneeze near him, it's a record.
- 57:24You're in big trouble then.
- 57:26Four coughs.
- 57:27Five game.
- 57:28If you tackle him hard, if you put your studs up anywhere near Van Dyke, it could be a five game suspension.
- 57:34You know what I mean?
- 57:36people are terrified of him he's the most precious person I've seen on football they're absolutely petrified of him everyone just as great as a defender he is and he is great why is everyone scared of him go and nail him go and nail him well we used to have Beto used to do that didn't he we need Barry to we need Barry to do that now they've not started too well
- 57:58Might as well, as soon as we're talking about them, might as well touch on it.
- 58:01I mean, he didn't start well for Bournemouth either.
- 58:05But they've not started too well, have they?
- 58:07It still sits at me when he comes out and says, my players can't run for 30 minutes.
- 58:10Wow.
- 58:11Wow.
- 58:12Wow, that's just bought you some time.
- 58:14Smart boy.
- 58:15Clever boy.
- 58:17That's just bought you a whole lot of time, but...
- 58:19I don't know, we'll see.
- 58:22I'm not interested in them, I couldn't care less.
- 58:24I mean, I'm only interested when the baby's on the pitch, when Jaden's on the pitch, that's the only time I'm there.
- 58:28I'm urging for them to do well.
- 58:30But unless that boy's on the pitch, nope, nothing to do with me.
- 58:34I have no...
- 58:36I have no thought.
- 58:36Is he still there?
- 58:37He's not out on loan or anything at the minute?
- 58:39No, no.
- 58:40I'm sure he'll play soon enough.
- 58:42And when that boy does his family now, he's going to light it up.
- 58:46I find myself supporting him as well.
- 58:47Yeah, I was commentating on a game when he first came on.
- 58:51It was hard.
- 58:52You know?
- 58:54That was hard to support young Jane Dans whilst not wanting to support Liverpool.
- 59:00I know.
- 59:01It's tricky, isn't it?
- 59:03Yeah.
- 59:04I just wish that boy could put on a blue top.
- 59:07But he's a cop high through and through.
- 59:08That's never going to change yet.
- 59:11Well, we can dare the dream.
- 59:13Tony 4-1.
- 59:14Aussie.
- 59:154-1, yeah.
- 59:152-0.
- 59:16That'd be nice.
- 59:182-0.
- 59:20I'm going for it.
- 59:21I think 2-0.
- 59:22Oz, as a footballer.
- 59:25You prefer 4-1 or 2-0?
- 59:30As an attacking midfielder... No, no, that's not what I asked, Leon.
- 59:33That's not what I asked as a footballer.
- 59:34I'm telling you, my mentality as an attacking footballer, I would like more goals.
- 59:39I want 4-1 because that means we've created more as a team going forward.
- 59:43We've done more, which is mostly my job and all that, blah, blah.
- 59:47but there's something good about keeping clean sheets as a team and being part of that.
- 59:51When I play centre midfield, yeah, there's something great about keeping clean sheets and not letting them score goals.
- 59:55So, to answer your question, both.
- 59:59What do you reckon, David?
- 1:00:01If David Moyes was asked, 2-0 or 4-1?
- 1:00:042-0 all day long.
- 1:00:052-0 all day.
- 1:00:06Not even close as?
- 1:00:07No, no, 2-0 all day, Moyes.
- 1:00:11He does like scoring goals, especially because...
- 1:00:14Again, the criticism of him is that his team don't, you know, especially at the minute, don't overly create and all of that.
- 1:00:21So if it showed that he scored four goals, yeah, he'd love it.
- 1:00:24But I think there's just something good about knowing your team can keep clean sheets.
- 1:00:28But going back to something you said before, when I mentioned that he's better at keeping clean sheets and scoring, you're right.
- 1:00:34We are playing some really nice football at the minute through the lines, getting in behind, quality play, especially through midfield, some lovely one-touch passing with just,
- 1:00:43need to be a little bit more clinical.
- 1:00:45And that's not just Ciano Barry.
- 1:00:47That is your Brennan Johnsons.
- 1:00:49That is Hackney had a chance last night.
- 1:00:51That is Jusby Hall that scored, but he's had a couple of more opportunities.
- 1:00:55So we need goals from all over the pitch.
- 1:00:58We need everybody to not realise, everybody does realise the goal, but they need to step up.
- 1:01:04And if we have one of those days, our football justifies us scoring a few goals in the majority of games that we play.
- 1:01:10We should have scored three in spits.
- 1:01:12Do you know what I find alarming and I've seen over the most recent seasons?
- 1:01:16The players who play the most passes are centre-halves.
- 1:01:20How mad that was.
- 1:01:21When you were playing, that was never the case.
- 1:01:23Centre-half weren't playing the most pass.
- 1:01:25It was going through the middle every time.
- 1:01:27We didn't want our centre-halves touching it most of the time.
- 1:01:31No disrespect to any of those centre-halves I'm talking about.
- 1:01:35But you didn't.
- 1:01:35He gets his hands on you.
- 1:01:38No, yeah.
- 1:01:39Oh, God.
- 1:01:40I'll be avoiding him for a bit.
- 1:01:41But what happened was the game was played differently.
- 1:01:44So, you know, back in the 90s, centre-forward stayed up front.
- 1:01:49So they never got back behind the ball.
- 1:01:52So centre-halves or wherever it was, we'd give the ball to midfielders.
- 1:01:56And the centre-forwards of BBI and them, they never had to worry.
- 1:01:58Maybe it's sneaking up on their back shoulder every now and again.
- 1:02:01But so many teams now drop everybody behind the ball.
- 1:02:04It's the way everyone, you know, this low block, what we just call defending deep, defending the edge of your box.
- 1:02:09Everybody does that.
- 1:02:11You only used to get that in the 80th minute onwards when they were defending.
- 1:02:16something now your teams do it right from the very start which means there's no real room for midfielders and for you to be effective your midfielders have to go and get in between the lines in pockets and play like old school number 10s so that just means your centre-halves have to have the ball so it's just a different style of football it can be enjoyable at times it can be fun but
- 1:02:35It can also be boring when we prefer to get the ball wide, get crosses into the box, get people...
- 1:02:41There was a move we did in the game last night.
- 1:02:44The ball got switched out through midfield, out to the left.
- 1:02:46Grealish literally wanted to control it.
- 1:02:49Mikkelenko went on the outside of it, played him in.
- 1:02:51Mikkelenko crossed, a bit of a ricochet.
- 1:02:53We nearly scored.
- 1:02:54I was just quick, two-touch football, one side to the other, using the space, runners, cross.
- 1:02:59We love crosses.
- 1:03:00We love moving the ball.
- 1:03:01Will we see it change back then, Oz?
- 1:03:02No.
- 1:03:03Or will it always be like this for the...
- 1:03:05Eventually, yeah.
- 1:03:08My worry is, I was thinking with people, teams defending as deep as they are at the minute.
- 1:03:14So Moise used to always say to us, another manager used to say to us, if a team defends deep, make them.
- 1:03:19If a team defends on the edge of or just inside their own penalty area, what's the point in taking 20 passes on the halfway line?
- 1:03:27pop it in there and see what they can do.
- 1:03:29Knock a big long ball.
- 1:03:30When we had Fellaini or someone like that, knock a ball up to the edge of the box.
- 1:03:33Suddenly you've bypassed two banks of, you know, two centre forwards, a midfield forward, and the two centre-halves having to defend the edge of the box.
- 1:03:40One little knockdown and you're getting Gary Speed type goals all the time.
- 1:03:44God bless him.
- 1:03:45Those type of runs.
- 1:03:46You're Tim Cahill where they landed and you're scoring.
- 1:03:50Whereas at the minute, there is such a void of a big old school set of forwards or people that are physically, and there are a couple of big ones out there, but there's not enough for each team.
- 1:04:01And there's certainly not enough to have the real quality ones at a decent price.
- 1:04:07So you're having to find another way.
- 1:04:08So if we bring those centre forwards back and we can find those physical guys, I'd be doing it all the time.
- 1:04:14Get the ball wide, cross it to two big guys.
- 1:04:16Imagine, for instance, Les Ferdinand and Alan Shearer, or even Shearer and Duncan Ferguson back in the day when he played for Newcastle, playing against these teams that defend on the edge of the box.
- 1:04:26Imagine just popping her up to Big Dunk or Shearer on the edge of the box and them two physically dominating centre-halves.
- 1:04:33The teams wouldn't be able to defend.
- 1:04:35They'd have to come out and press you.
- 1:04:36Two centre-halves now against one every week.
- 1:04:38Exactly.
- 1:04:39And the centre-four you're talking about isn't that physical.
- 1:04:44They can't really match it.
- 1:04:45But imagine, go back to the old school centre forwards, Shearer and Ferguson or Les Ferdinand.
- 1:04:50Whether you got it wide for a cross, you'd be just crossing the ball in all the time.
- 1:04:54Or you'd be just giving it to your full-backs and say, just hit it long to the D on the edge of the penalty area.
- 1:04:59Them two will cause carnage.
- 1:05:01Midfield runners off them.
- 1:05:03You can't defend deep anymore, but they can at the minute.
- 1:05:05Imagine the Viking had a striking partner.
- 1:05:08Oh, my word.
- 1:05:09Oh my lord.
- 1:05:10He doesn't need it, by the way, but imagine... That sounds like you've already imagined it.
- 1:05:17I'm putting the application in.
- 1:05:19I'm happy to do it with him.
- 1:05:20I'm happy to play with him.
- 1:05:21Get the scout stand for game for Hove.
- 1:05:23I'm telling you.
- 1:05:24The difference with that is, the difference is that is that City as a team don't play like that.
- 1:05:29They're one of the teams that don't.
- 1:05:30But let's just say you put Haaland in our team with another centre forward, then you'd be going, we'd just play it up to him.
- 1:05:37Big fella, flick-ons.
- 1:05:38And even if he didn't go for the flick-on, he'd be amazing at running behind.
- 1:05:43He'd be the little striker.
- 1:05:44You know what I mean?
- 1:05:45He is the dreamer.
- 1:05:46He's the dream.
- 1:05:48Oh, yeah.
- 1:05:48You mentioned the game for hope.
- 1:05:51Yeah.
- 1:05:52Tony's playing, isn't he?
- 1:05:53Yeah.
