- 0:00Speaker 1: We're back on the UConn Football Coaches Show with Jason
- 0:02Speaker 1: Candle and Mike Crispino. Let's talk about D, Coach. Huskies
- 0:06Speaker 1: had the 14-0 lead. We've been talking about Miami, Ohio.
- 0:10Speaker 1: In the secondary for your team, you've got young guys.
- 0:13Speaker 1: We talked about a little bit last week. You have
- 0:15Speaker 1: three sophomores who play quite a bit. How much experience
- 0:19Speaker 1: or how do you gain experience week to week with
- 0:22Speaker 1: those guys so they're not going to make mistakes or
- 0:26Speaker 1: they're going to be in places where they ought to
- 0:27Speaker 1: be you know, as much as possible because it's a
- 0:31Speaker 1: different game, right? You're playing football these days in college
- 0:35Speaker 1: against 50 year guys, a lot of seniors, a lot
- 0:37Speaker 1: of older guys. And then, you know, the, the young
- 0:40Speaker 1: guys are kind of behind the, the eight ball a
- 0:43Speaker 1: little bit.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Well, I think those, some of those guys stepped up
- 0:46Speaker 2: and did a great job. I mean, Tyler McKinstry played
- 0:48Speaker 2: his tail off Saturday, both at corner and at safety.
- 0:51Speaker 2: You know, we've been without Zion the last two weeks
- 0:53Speaker 2: and coming out of Maryland, I thought, you know, he
- 0:56Speaker 2: was our best cover guy. Um, You know, now the
- 0:58Speaker 2: Maryland receivers made a couple of plays that he'd like
- 1:01Speaker 2: to have back. But for the most part, he was
- 1:03Speaker 2: step for step with them guys the entire day. You know,
- 1:06Speaker 2: then he rolls his ankle practice. We don't have him
- 1:08Speaker 2: for Southern Miss. We don't you know, we didn't have
- 1:10Speaker 2: him Saturday. And I don't know if we'll have him
- 1:12Speaker 2: this weekend either. But, you know, some guys have been
- 1:15Speaker 2: forced into positions where they haven't been before in the
- 1:18Speaker 2: sense that they just haven't had those moments. And, you know,
- 1:21Speaker 2: you're upset with some guys because they didn't handle it well.
- 1:23Speaker 2: But you're also very proud of some other guys that
- 1:25Speaker 2: did a really, really good job.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Yeah. Seven tackle for losses, 21 yards. I love the
- 1:31Speaker 1: one on fourth and inches. I mean, you got to
- 1:33Speaker 1: stop there to turn the ball over in that game.
- 1:36Speaker 1: I mean, that was deep in your territory. That was awesome.
- 1:40Speaker 1: A tackle behind the line of scrimmage. Boy, that was
- 1:43Speaker 1: a good one.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Well, I mean, you know, really good job by the
- 1:47Speaker 2: big boys in the center there. And obviously, when you
- 1:50Speaker 2: give KV on Sherman a place to run through and
- 1:54Speaker 2: make plays, he's going to find it. So, Um, he's
- 1:57Speaker 2: 235 pounds. So, you know, when he comes through there
- 2:00Speaker 2: at a full head of steam, there's not many running
- 2:01Speaker 2: backs that are just going to gain and push forward
- 2:04Speaker 2: for the extra yard and this quote unquote, second effort
- 2:06Speaker 2: on that guy. So, uh, good scheme and a great
- 2:09Speaker 2: individual performance.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Yeah. Hayden Pegg gets eight tackles. Braden Moore had seven, uh, tackles, uh,
- 2:15Speaker 1: pressuring the QB. I think there was one quarterback hurry
- 2:18Speaker 1: in that game. Dave McCollum had a pretty good game,
- 2:21Speaker 1: as you say, is good passer. Um, Going forward, if
- 2:25Speaker 1: you don't get what you need pressure-wise up your front
- 2:28Speaker 1: four defensively, what's the thought process? How do you generate it?
- 2:33Speaker 1: How do you force these quarterbacks? Steve Angeli's coming in
- 2:36Speaker 1: here from Syracuse. He's a quality guy. How do you
- 2:39Speaker 1: force him off his marks?
- 2:41Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I think there's– when you pressure, give up,
- 2:46Speaker 2: you know, extra eyes and bodies and coverage, you know,
- 2:50Speaker 2: happy balance there. Where is that? What does that look
- 2:53Speaker 2: like week to week? I think it'll change based on
- 2:56Speaker 2: who the quarterback is as it pertains to Syracuse. I
- 2:59Speaker 2: think that, you know, he's, you know, whichever quarterback they play.
- 3:05Speaker 2: I mean, I think that, you know, both of those
- 3:07Speaker 2: guys are very capable. They're a little bit different style.
- 3:10Speaker 2: You know, you got a runner type of body that
- 3:12Speaker 2: if you blitz him and you pressure him and he
- 3:14Speaker 2: gets out, it's going to look like that 38-yard touchdown
- 3:16Speaker 2: that Caleb had. on Saturday. If it's the guy that's
- 3:20Speaker 2: the drop back passer, you might not get home to
- 3:23Speaker 2: the quarterback, but you got to make sure that you
- 3:24Speaker 2: get your hands up at the line of scrimmage and
- 3:26Speaker 2: you get some batted balls at the line. Um, you know,
- 3:29Speaker 2: we are a high pressure rate against Southern Miss and
- 3:30Speaker 2: we knocked a lot of passes down at the line
- 3:32Speaker 2: of scrimmage. So, um, it made it really hard for
- 3:34Speaker 2: that guy to see through some of those windows, you know,
- 3:37Speaker 2: today's day and age of, Hey, you got a quarterback
- 3:39Speaker 2: that looks over top of the offensive line. Like that's,
- 3:42Speaker 2: that's a myth that doesn't exist. Um, so you want
- 3:45Speaker 2: to make sure that you close those sight lines the
- 3:47Speaker 2: best you can and, you match the hand with the
- 3:49Speaker 2: hand when he gets ready to release that football.
- 3:52Speaker 1: You're playing at home this week off a couple of
- 3:55Speaker 1: roadies in a row. So is that a good feeling?
- 3:58Speaker 1: Is that helpful? You're going to feel like, okay, emotionally,
- 4:01Speaker 1: we had a tough one last week, but we're home now.
- 4:05Speaker 2: Hell, I don't know. I mean, I, you know, I'm
- 4:07Speaker 2: trying to, you know, make sure that we have a
- 4:09Speaker 2: really good Monday and worry about what has to be
- 4:12Speaker 2: done for us to get a productive Tuesday. So, So
- 4:15Speaker 2: is it great to be at our home field?
- 4:16Speaker 1: Yes.
- 4:17Speaker 2: Do I love being in front of our fans? Absolutely.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Does that make the team that we're playing any easier
- 4:22Speaker 2: to defeat this weekend?
- 4:23Speaker 1: It doesn't.
- 4:25Speaker 2: You know, hopefully that, you know, we can have a
- 4:28Speaker 2: really good week and we can put a really good
- 4:29Speaker 2: product on the field that matches a great environment in
- 4:31Speaker 2: the stands. And we owe it to our fans to
- 4:33Speaker 2: do that. And, you know, like I said, I hope
- 4:35Speaker 2: our fans come out and really support us and make
- 4:38Speaker 2: that home field a real home field advantage like it
- 4:41Speaker 2: can be.
- 4:42Speaker 1: Yeah, the reports are going to be a great crowd
- 4:44Speaker 1: on hand for Saturday. All right, back with more. Jason
- 4:46Speaker 1: Candle with us, the UConn Football Coaches Show on Learfield.
