- 0:22Speaker 1: Hey, it's Christa makes from less than Jake and uh,
- 0:26Speaker 1: we're coming back to Australia. Yeah, have like I think
- 0:29Speaker 1: it's like what nine or ten shows we're doing down there.
- 0:32Speaker 1: It's a pretty pretty good amount and not a fucking around. No,
- 0:36Speaker 1: we're not messing around. We're coming down with our friends,
- 0:39Speaker 1: the Bennies. We're gonna take those knuckleheads back out. It's
- 0:42Speaker 1: gonna be Uh, it's gonna be.
- 0:43Speaker 2: A party, beautiful, Chriss, thanks for joining us today.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Thank you for having me my pleasure.
- 0:49Speaker 3: So as you say, listen, Jake returned to Australia this
- 0:52Speaker 3: October for the first time in seven years.
- 0:55Speaker 2: Mate, So let's get the elephant out of the room
- 0:56Speaker 2: straight up. Light. Why have you neglected us for so long?
- 1:00Speaker 1: Oh? Geez? So seven years? By my account, that was
- 1:03Speaker 1: Was it twenty sixteen was the last time we were there?
- 1:06Speaker 2: I guess I got it up inside.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Twenty Was it twenty seventeen? Somewhere around there? I think was.
- 1:12Speaker 1: I think I might have been twenty twenty seventeen. Uh,
- 1:16Speaker 1: you know, shortly thereafter, because you know, we for a
- 1:19Speaker 1: while they were trying to get down to Australia every
- 1:21Speaker 1: two to three four years. Uh, you know, tops, we
- 1:25Speaker 1: tried to try to get back down there for at
- 1:26Speaker 1: least a festival or for our own tour or something,
- 1:29Speaker 1: and then of course the h we lost about two
- 1:31Speaker 1: years of the pandemic and now here we are. So
- 1:35Speaker 1: it also it took took bands a minute, not to
- 1:37Speaker 1: make excuses, it took them out of the pandemic a
- 1:40Speaker 1: second to start traveling overseas. There was still some some
- 1:44Speaker 1: overseas travel stuff. So we're we're we're glad to be
- 1:48Speaker 1: back and we hope it's not anywhere near as long
- 1:50Speaker 1: next time.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Aha.
- 1:52Speaker 3: So what's actually changed with Lesson Jake in ie seven years?
- 1:55Speaker 3: Might you had any any might changes or just business
- 1:57Speaker 3: as usual?
- 1:59Speaker 1: Well, business as usual for the most part in terms
- 2:04Speaker 1: of the band, just moving forward as we always have.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Original drummer Vinnie stepped down in twenty eighteen, and Matt
- 2:12Speaker 1: Yonker has been playing drums with us since then. He
- 2:15Speaker 1: appeared on our last full length record, Silver Linings, and
- 2:18Speaker 1: he's on all of the new three new singles that
- 2:22Speaker 1: we've released over this past summer, well this summer here
- 2:26Speaker 1: in the United States.
- 2:30Speaker 2: You're making things hard for yourself, Brian.
- 2:32Speaker 3: You're not only doing your own Hello rock view down
- 2:34Speaker 3: on the show, but you've also jumped on the harder
- 2:36Speaker 3: than headline up as roll Manade.
- 2:38Speaker 2: You definitely make it up for lost time.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Well we are, yeah, you know, we try to hit
- 2:44Speaker 1: festivals and do some stuff on our own. We get
- 2:47Speaker 1: down there and sometimes you know, beggars can't be a
- 2:50Speaker 1: huge as you take what you can get and this time,
- 2:52Speaker 1: this time, it just worked out and it's great. In fact,
- 2:55Speaker 1: you know, when we initially announced the tour, there was
- 2:58Speaker 1: a lot of people angry because we could and announce
- 3:00Speaker 1: those markets because there now oh yeah, just throw people
- 3:06Speaker 1: were saying some stuff and you you want to jump
- 3:09Speaker 1: in and you know they were. They weren't being mean,
- 3:12Speaker 1: but they were you know, you know, Australians can get you.
- 3:14Speaker 1: Guys can get it, get feisty, like come on.
- 3:17Speaker 2: But you're right because.
- 3:18Speaker 3: When I was doing the research on this, before I
- 3:20Speaker 3: saw the Heart of the Helpot, I saw you don't
- 3:22Speaker 3: playing in Brisbane, and I'm thinking, like the fuck's wrong
- 3:25Speaker 3: with Brisbane the heart of Hell?
- 3:27Speaker 2: And do you playing forgiven?
- 3:30Speaker 1: No? No, uh, Brisneyland, bris Vegas, whatever you wanna, whatever
- 3:34Speaker 1: you want to call it. I love it. It's one
- 3:36Speaker 1: of my favorite favorite cities. Uh, I'll never forget walking
- 3:40Speaker 1: the bridge there and seeing those bats.
- 3:43Speaker 2: Yeah, because say ship every way.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Yeah, so good times.
- 3:53Speaker 2: I remember I was living off in fancies Ago.
- 3:55Speaker 3: There's this couple of mica trees in the center cha
- 3:57Speaker 3: out of the backslice only and that I'm like that
- 4:00Speaker 3: shit everywhere. But you get tourists coming and they park
- 4:03Speaker 3: the vans underneath that train leaving for a couple of
- 4:05Speaker 3: days and come back and I either be covered with
- 4:08Speaker 3: shit and be that stuff is as city as fuck,
- 4:10Speaker 3: man like you come back out for a couple of
- 4:11Speaker 3: days and it's eight and through the paint and terribles. Oh,
- 4:19Speaker 3: we'll start with a hello rockview part of the tour
- 4:22Speaker 3: where you're going to be playing the nineteen to ninety
- 4:23Speaker 3: eight album with the same name in full. I know
- 4:26Speaker 3: my arithmetic's pretty bad, but that's twenty seven years or
- 4:29Speaker 3: so since that album's come out. There's no anniversary for that,
- 4:32Speaker 3: So what are you doing that album for?
- 4:34Speaker 1: Well, that's funny you should say that. So the record
- 4:37Speaker 1: came out in the fallen ninety eight, so in the
- 4:40Speaker 1: fall of last year, twenty twenty three, that was the
- 4:44Speaker 1: twenty fifth anniversary of the record. So we were playing
- 4:47Speaker 1: the album in the United States last year, we did
- 4:51Speaker 1: a run of it, we do run in England maybe
- 4:53Speaker 1: I can't remember, and now we're bringing it over to
- 4:57Speaker 1: Australia this year. So it's and the reason we justified
- 5:02Speaker 1: continuing the tour and still celebrating the twenty five year
- 5:06Speaker 1: release of it is we toured Hello Rock View well
- 5:09Speaker 1: into nineteen ninety nine, so it was like.
- 5:12Speaker 2: You know, a year and a.
- 5:14Speaker 1: Half tour, so we're still playing by the rules here.
- 5:17Speaker 2: I'll give you that one bright When you first started
- 5:21Speaker 2: playing that album Full of My Life, was it a
- 5:23Speaker 2: difficult thing to know?
- 5:24Speaker 4: You?
- 5:24Speaker 2: Like, I cand imagine when you write it back then
- 5:25Speaker 2: that you ever thought you'd be playing the whole up
- 5:27Speaker 2: one day.
- 5:29Speaker 1: Well, it is. It's a lot, definitely for me vocally,
- 5:32Speaker 1: because you know, I sang the majority of that record.
- 5:37Speaker 1: Roger sang all of all my best friends of metal heads.
- 5:39Speaker 1: He certainly sings a lot of backing vocals, and over
- 5:42Speaker 1: the years we've definitely become more of a fifty to
- 5:44Speaker 1: fifty split. But back then, coming off the heels of
- 5:49Speaker 1: losing streak, it was, you know, I was the singer
- 5:52Speaker 1: he sang some songs he was singing tons of backups
- 5:54Speaker 1: and then so in that aspect, it's tough. We've played
- 5:59Speaker 1: all those songs of the years, you know, by themselves,
- 6:03Speaker 1: never as a whole. But when we went back and
- 6:06Speaker 1: played all the record in secession, it's you're right. You
- 6:11Speaker 1: typically when you're a young band, you don't write a
- 6:13Speaker 1: record and play the whole thing. We weren't at that time.
- 6:16Speaker 1: So it's a cool trip down memory lane.
- 6:19Speaker 3: Like personally, gone back and landed all that material for
- 6:22Speaker 3: twenty five years.
- 6:23Speaker 2: I liked it. Does it take it back to that tab?
- 6:25Speaker 2: Is there is a nostalgic thing for you?
- 6:27Speaker 3: Or is it just you've got to learn them to play?
- 6:30Speaker 2: You know?
- 6:31Speaker 1: With this record again, we played each of these songs
- 6:36Speaker 1: you know, live at least once. There's some other records
- 6:40Speaker 1: that we have that some songs just never translated past
- 6:43Speaker 1: the rehearsal room or translated past getting them recorded. And
- 6:47Speaker 1: uh so, yeah, they they're always going to conjure up memories.
- 6:52Speaker 1: But the memories are more now from the fans and
- 6:57Speaker 1: what the songs mean to them and hearing hearing them stories.
- 7:01Speaker 1: That's that's that's what's what keeps the songs alive. That's
- 7:05Speaker 1: what keeps people clicking online, you know, and or you know,
- 7:09Speaker 1: being old school and popping the CD in or putting
- 7:12Speaker 1: the record player on and listening to the music.
- 7:15Speaker 2: Yeah, this is one thing I've always wanted.
- 7:17Speaker 3: I'm not sure if this actually relates to you or not,
- 7:20Speaker 3: but you know, like a lot a lot of bands,
- 7:22Speaker 3: they write really personal songs about troubles they got through.
- 7:25Speaker 2: In their life.
- 7:25Speaker 3: Like if you went back and had to revisit that
- 7:28Speaker 3: twenty five years later to do that album, Like would
- 7:30Speaker 3: that bring back all those negative feelings again, like that
- 7:33Speaker 3: you'd purged in.
- 7:34Speaker 2: The first place.
- 7:35Speaker 1: Well, you know our drummer at the time, Vinnie, he
- 7:39Speaker 1: wrote ninety nine point nine percent of the lyrics. I
- 7:43Speaker 1: always say, you know, Roger and I would arrange them.
- 7:45Speaker 1: We'd come up with words and whatnot. But you know,
- 7:49Speaker 1: that was all I ever knew. I met him when
- 7:51Speaker 1: I was fifteen, he was like eighteen or nineteen years old,
- 7:54Speaker 1: and you know, he would feed me these snippets of lyrics,
- 7:57Speaker 1: sometimes full ideas, sometimes just phrases here and there, and
- 8:00Speaker 1: that's all I ever knew. I've had people ask me
- 8:04Speaker 1: before you how do you sing? Other people we'll song
- 8:06Speaker 1: with conviction and make it yours, you know, so to answer,
- 8:08Speaker 1: you know, does it bring up bad memories? No, all
- 8:10Speaker 1: the memories of those songs are all very positive to me,
- 8:15Speaker 1: you know, especially the writing process of it, because it
- 8:19Speaker 1: was it was all happening so fast. We were so young,
- 8:23Speaker 1: and every day was just this adventure. It was. It was.
- 8:28Speaker 1: It was exciting because we didn't really know what was
- 8:31Speaker 1: going to happen that day except okay, we're playing a
- 8:34Speaker 1: show or we're getting back in the van, and we
- 8:36Speaker 1: got to record a new song. And it was so fast.
- 8:42Speaker 1: I always say, if I could go back, I would
- 8:44Speaker 1: slow down. I probably wouldn't, but I like, you know,
- 8:49Speaker 1: I don't. I don't have regrets. But if I could
- 8:51Speaker 1: go back, I'd try to just slow down a little
- 8:54Speaker 1: bit to savor it all because it went by in
- 8:57Speaker 1: the in the blink of an eye.
- 8:59Speaker 2: I'm a man. The other side that you planned, of course,
- 9:02Speaker 2: is harder than hell.
- 9:03Speaker 3: Fish's regurgitate, unwritten Lord Gemini and more like that sounds
- 9:07Speaker 3: like a potty brother.
- 9:08Speaker 2: There's some pretty cool.
- 9:09Speaker 1: Bands there, yeah, I mean again, you know, thirty two
- 9:15Speaker 1: years into this journey, to be invited to a festival
- 9:19Speaker 1: in Australia and have people want to interview you and
- 9:22Speaker 1: talk to you. You know, not many bands in this world.
- 9:27Speaker 1: Think of the superstars, think of the think of your
- 9:31Speaker 1: your huge bands, whoever, rolling Stones, you know, food fighters, Metallica,
- 9:36Speaker 1: bands of phil stadiums. There's not that many of them,
- 9:40Speaker 1: you know. And then think of all the millions of
- 9:43Speaker 1: bands from the band at the local pub, the band
- 9:45Speaker 1: that's been trying their whole career to get a record,
- 9:48Speaker 1: a contract. How many of those bands are out there?
- 9:50Speaker 1: And then you got these floater bands like less than
- 9:53Speaker 1: Jay eg Unwritten Law, like you know, we might not
- 9:55Speaker 1: be household names. I'm not getting mob when I walk
- 9:57Speaker 1: down the road, but there's a thousand people Sydney that
- 10:00Speaker 1: want to see the band play.
- 10:02Speaker 2: You know.
- 10:02Speaker 1: It's it's it's cool.
- 10:03Speaker 2: It's got to be a buzz bru It's really really
- 10:05Speaker 2: got to be a good feeling.
- 10:07Speaker 1: It is it is you know, I I I have
- 10:10Speaker 1: friends that are that are uber famous and you know,
- 10:14Speaker 1: like imagine going to the store or to a show
- 10:17Speaker 1: or something and and we you know, you couldn't take
- 10:20Speaker 1: your kids there because you're getting harassed the whole time.
- 10:22Speaker 1: People want your autograph, to want to talk to you,
- 10:23Speaker 1: and people think that that's uh, you know, that's glamorous
- 10:27Speaker 1: and man, I I kind of have the one foot
- 10:29Speaker 1: in both worlds. I have the best of both worlds.
- 10:32Speaker 3: Good on you, right, And I guess the bands that
- 10:35Speaker 3: were getting up you initially because you weren't coming to
- 10:37Speaker 3: these places you gotta want to know you a bit well,
- 10:39Speaker 3: you'd be playing how I Rockville.
- 10:41Speaker 2: At the heart of the health shows as well? Or
- 10:42Speaker 2: is that a different set?
- 10:44Speaker 1: It depends I and we have this discussion maybe a
- 10:48Speaker 1: week ago with the band. The last meeting we had,
- 10:51Speaker 1: someone had brought it up. I think that we're we're
- 10:55Speaker 1: scheduled for a forty five minute or an hour top set.
- 10:58Speaker 1: So if it's if it's not under an hour, we're
- 11:00Speaker 1: not we're not going to get the record in because
- 11:02Speaker 1: with talking and stopping, uh you know, we're we're probably
- 11:05Speaker 1: around the fifty five minute mark. But so to answer
- 11:09Speaker 1: your question, yes, I don't know, Yes.
- 11:12Speaker 2: I don't know, double negative. I like it.
- 11:18Speaker 3: Listen, Jacob Man like your universally known for your live shows, mate,
- 11:22Speaker 3: Like how much how much practice and effort goes into
- 11:24Speaker 3: day or is it just spongehiniest every not.
- 11:28Speaker 1: You know, I'd like to tell you that a lot
- 11:30Speaker 1: of a lot of planning and effort goes into it,
- 11:33Speaker 1: which I guess ultimately it does. But you know, ninety
- 11:37Speaker 1: percent of the magic happens with with the what the
- 11:40Speaker 1: audience brings.
- 11:42Speaker 4: You know.
- 11:42Speaker 1: And this is not a knock against anybody else's band,
- 11:48Speaker 1: or their show, or their politics. But we've never brought
- 11:52Speaker 1: anything but fun into a live setting. We've never preached it. People.
- 11:57Speaker 1: It's not about that. It's you leave whatever you got
- 12:00Speaker 1: going on at the door, and you know whatever in
- 12:03Speaker 1: your personal life, and you get in the venue, and uh,
- 12:06Speaker 1: we're gonna give you an hour, hour and a half
- 12:08Speaker 1: of our time, and and we're gonna we're all gonna
- 12:11Speaker 1: go somewhere together, and typically we all go to a
- 12:13Speaker 1: place of just complete insanity. It's ridiculous. We laugh at
- 12:17Speaker 1: each other, we make fun of each other, all all
- 12:20Speaker 1: in in good jest, and uh rarely, rarely do I
- 12:26Speaker 1: get off stage, uh and and and think it was
- 12:29Speaker 1: a bad show. And if it is, it's just the
- 12:31Speaker 1: crap between my ears that you know. I I've grown
- 12:34Speaker 1: to realize that just because I had a bad show,
- 12:37Speaker 1: that doesn't mean that anybody else did cool, But you.
- 12:41Speaker 3: Guys don't exactly stand still, brother, especially yourself, and like
- 12:44Speaker 3: not obviously getting any younger, Like how do you go
- 12:47Speaker 3: with your body? Like you you finally have to compensate
- 12:49Speaker 3: in certain bits so you don't limp off.
- 12:53Speaker 1: Yes, well I I I I guess you call it
- 12:59Speaker 1: the same thing. In Australia, I do. I go to
- 13:00Speaker 1: CrossFit a couple of days a week, So I I
- 13:03Speaker 1: do that to stay fit. I keep my cardio up.
- 13:07Speaker 1: I try, I say, try, try to eat, eat a
- 13:12Speaker 1: good diet. I do better when I'm home. I do
- 13:14Speaker 1: terrible on the road man, because I I like to
- 13:17Speaker 1: eat like crap. And uh yeah, I work. I work
- 13:22Speaker 1: out like a madman. The other thing I do is
- 13:24Speaker 1: I answer your question, I stretch at least once, if
- 13:28Speaker 1: not twice a day. I believe that. I believe that
- 13:32Speaker 1: that's stretching and walking more so than anything, smoking, not sleeping,
- 13:39Speaker 1: recreational substances, a bad diet, all that stuff. Yeah, it's
- 13:44Speaker 1: not good for you, but I'm a firm believer that
- 13:48Speaker 1: you got you gotta keep moving. Think Think about people
- 13:50Speaker 1: when they get in their late seventies eighties and they
- 13:53Speaker 1: you know, they fall and break a hip because they
- 13:55Speaker 1: have no no, no mobility. So and I want to
- 13:59Speaker 1: keep doing this. I enjoy playing most of the guys
- 14:02Speaker 1: that I know in the business that have had long
- 14:04Speaker 1: jeb but either they're you know, not too much weight
- 14:10Speaker 1: on the body. They're they're trying to keep keep the
- 14:12Speaker 1: bones as weight free as they can.
- 14:16Speaker 3: You release a single, Breaking Words, back in June, Like,
- 14:20Speaker 3: is that a standalone single or is it part of the.
- 14:22Speaker 2: Next album cycle?
- 14:23Speaker 1: Yeah, so that's a standalone single. We released another song
- 14:27Speaker 1: called Walking pipe Bomb in July, and then about a
- 14:32Speaker 1: week yeah, about a week ago, we released our current
- 14:35Speaker 1: single called not My Problem. So we have another single
- 14:38Speaker 1: coming out in September. So we're just kind of doing out,
- 14:42Speaker 1: doing out singles and and seeing how that goes. You know,
- 14:45Speaker 1: We've we've kind of flopped back and forth the past
- 14:49Speaker 1: couple of years. We've done EPs, we've done singles, we've
- 14:53Speaker 1: done full length. So it's kind of whatever strikes us
- 14:55Speaker 1: at the moment, and right now we just kind of
- 14:58Speaker 1: want to dole them out is single pieces of work.
- 15:03Speaker 3: Now before we got them out, I've got a NEWE
- 15:04Speaker 3: segment that I've introduced to their interviews.
- 15:06Speaker 2: It's called fighto bombs.
- 15:07Speaker 3: So I'm basically going through the Internet and found a
- 15:09Speaker 3: couple of fighters of you guys, and I gotta flashion
- 15:12Speaker 3: on the screendia and you explained to us what's.
- 15:14Speaker 2: Going on there?
- 15:15Speaker 1: All right?
- 15:16Speaker 2: All right? The first one I've got is this one.
- 15:22Speaker 2: Where are you guys for that?
- 15:24Speaker 1: That is on the twenty sixteen Warped tour in the
- 15:30Speaker 1: United States. I don't know what venue or what state
- 15:33Speaker 1: that that is in, but I can see behind us
- 15:37Speaker 1: that falling in reverse. You could see reverse back there
- 15:41Speaker 1: they were next to us that day. And again definitely
- 15:45Speaker 1: know it was twenty sixteen because we had this presidential
- 15:48Speaker 1: tent that matched all of our because that was an
- 15:51Speaker 1: election year here in the You're a Torona Boone player
- 15:54Speaker 1: wearing the tattoo there, So twenty sixteen Warped.
- 15:57Speaker 2: Tour, right, yeah, and I'll go one more for you.
- 16:03Speaker 2: What the hell is going on?
- 16:05Speaker 3: Day?
- 16:06Speaker 1: Ah? So that is our sax player Jr. And our
- 16:09Speaker 1: trumpet player Buddy. We would launch into a song on
- 16:13Speaker 1: warp again. This is on the Warp tour. This would
- 16:15Speaker 1: have been I know that backdrop that would have been
- 16:21Speaker 1: twenty twenty eleven or twenty fourteen. Anyhow, that is a
- 16:27Speaker 1: mohawk template, that thing on the top of the kid's head.
- 16:31Speaker 1: And we basically were trying to bring back punk rock
- 16:34Speaker 1: that summer, and we said we're gonna give free mohawks
- 16:37Speaker 1: on stage. So we were running up long haired, long
- 16:39Speaker 1: haired kids and Buddy would take the hair and put
- 16:43Speaker 1: the template back, and then Jr. Would shave shave the
- 16:45Speaker 1: kid's head. And yeah, we were not great barbers.
- 16:52Speaker 2: Did you kive it?
- 16:53Speaker 4: Chell?
- 16:53Speaker 2: You have how many kids you got off and shave
- 16:55Speaker 2: the head?
- 16:56Speaker 1: There was one every day, at least one kid a
- 16:58Speaker 1: day would come up with a head. So now we
- 17:01Speaker 1: were cutting mohawks all across America.
- 17:03Speaker 3: I beg you many of those kids got home into
- 17:05Speaker 3: father grounded them for life because they went out with
- 17:07Speaker 3: a decent a cut and came over to the bwalk.
- 17:10Speaker 1: I'm yeah, I'm sure we weren't the favorite band around
- 17:14Speaker 1: the household.
